- Intro: How St. Paul Forged F. Scott Fitzgerald On September 24, 1896, Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born in a second-floor apartment at 481 Laurel Avenue in St. Paul’s Cathedral Hill neighborhood. He entered a home shadowed by grief. Three months before his birth, his mother had lost her two young daughters to scarlet fever, a loss Fitzgerald later connected to her intense attention to him as a child. As Fitzgerald later wrote: "I think I started then to be a writer." Growing up in rented apartments just blocks from the grand stone mansions of Summit Avenue, Fitzgerald lived on the physical edge of tremendous wealth. He was a poor boy beside a rich world. That spatial division carved a permanent conflict into his psyche, driving a lifelong obsession with status, class, and the realization that old-money systems inherently exclude upstarts. Act I: The Dual Inheritance By the turn of the twentieth century, St. Paul was a booming Midwestern railroad capital. Lumber barons and wholesale merchants built massive stone fortresses along Summit Avenue. Class boundaries were rigid, and the Fitzgerald household sat right on the fault line. Fitzgerald’s father, Edward Fitzgerald, was a courtly Marylander with a deep pride in his Southern ancestry. State historical records and family genealogies confirm he named his son after his famous relative, Francis Scott Key, a proud line of Maryland heritage Edward clung to as his business ventures failed. He tried his hand at manufacturing wicker furniture in St. Paul, but the business collapsed. In March 1908, Procter & Gamble fired him from his sales job, returning him home a broken man. The family survived only because of Fitzgerald’s mother, Mary 'Mollie' McQuillan. Her father had built a fortune as an Irish immigrant wholesale grocer, and her inheritance kept the household afloat. Yet as their finances fluctuated, the family moved repeatedly among St. Paul residences near Summit Avenue—prompting Fitzgerald later to describe his home as 'a house below the average on a street above the average. Between 1908 and 1911, he attended St. Paul Academy, where he published his first detective story at age thirteen, but local prep schools could not satisfy his appetite for status. In early January 1915, while home on holiday break from Princeton University, eighteen-year-old Fitzgerald met sixteen-year-old Chicago socialite Ginevra King. She was breathtaking, immensely rich, and thoroughly idolized. Fitzgerald fell hopelessly in love, making her his lifelong model for the elusive heroine. The romance ended in bitter rejection. According to literary accounts, Fitzgerald would long be haunted by a remark attributed to her social circle: "Poor boys shouldn't think of marrying rich girls." That single sentence shattered Fitzgerald's romantic idealism and defined the singular theme of his life's work. Act II: The Summit Avenue Crucible By the summer of 1919, Scott Fitzgerald was completely ruined. He had dropped out of Princeton and enlisted in the Army, only to be discharged without ever shipping overseas. In New York, he landed an advertising job at Barron Collier making ninety dollars a month, but it was not enough. His fiancée, Montgomery debutante Zelda Sayre, broke off their engagement, refusing to live in poverty. Before returning to St. Paul, he had accumulated 122 rejection slips and decorated the walls of his Manhattan room with them. Defeated, Fitzgerald moved into his parents' unit at 599 Summit Avenue, a brownstone rowhouse owned by his late grandmother's estate, and settled into a third-floor front room overlooking the avenue. He swore off alcohol, abandoned the social circuit, and staked his entire future on a single manuscript. To support himself during those intense months, Fitzgerald took a job repairing the roofs of railroad cars. At night, he returned to his desk, writing late into the morning to revise his draft into a one-hundred-and-twenty-thousand-word manuscript titled This Side of Paradise. Then came an autumn evening in 1919 when an acceptance letter arrived from Scribner’s editor Maxwell Perkins. The legendary publisher had accepted the novel. As Fitzgerald later recalled, he was ecstatic and ran out into the street, flagging down random automobiles to share the news. Published on March 26, 1920, the book sold over forty thousand copies in its first year. At twenty-three years old, the poor boy from Cathedral Hill was suddenly a national celebrity. Act III: The Mirage of the Jazz Age Fame brought the exact wealth Fitzgerald had promised Zelda. The couple married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on April 3, 1920. Almost overnight, they became national symbols of the Roaring Twenties, living in luxury at Manhattan's Biltmore Hotel, riding on the roofs of taxicabs, and leaping into city fountains. Yet behind the glittering facade, financial decay set in immediately. In April 1925, Fitzgerald published his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby. Written on the French Riviera, the novel delivered a devastating critique of American materialism, but the public turned away. The book sold fewer than twenty-three thousand copies in its first year, marking a crushing commercial failure. To fund their extravagant lifestyle and recover from the book’s soft sales, Fitzgerald paused his serious fiction to churn out commercial magazine stories. By 1929, The Saturday Evening Post paid him a peak rate of four thousand dollars per story, a fortune for work he privately despised as commercial trash. That artistic compromise eroded his spirit, and tragedy soon overtook the household when Zelda suffered a severe mental breakdown in 1930. Doctors diagnosed her with schizophrenia, leading to extended periods of psychiatric treatment at costly private clinics like Les Rives de Prangins in Switzerland and Highland Hospital in North Carolina, expenses that quickly crippled Fitzgerald's finances. Fitzgerald’s own life spiraled downward. By 1936, at the height of the Great Depression, his total annual book royalties across all four novels shrank to a meager eighty dollars. In a harsh 1934 letter from Key West, his close friend Ernest Hemingway urged him to stop feeling sorry for himself and focus purely on the craft. Fitzgerald could not break free. Hospitalized eight times for severe alcoholism between 1933 and 1937, he was physically broken. In 1937, heavily in debt, he moved to Los Angeles and accepted a contract for one thousand dollars a week as an uncredited script doctor for MGM, serving as a studio hack in the shadows of Hollywood. Act IV: The Unfinished Canvas & The Posthumous Reclaiming In Hollywood, Fitzgerald spent his final year quietly living with movie columnist Sheilah Graham. He fought for sobriety, earning money by freelancing while laboring over his final novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon. On December 21, 1940, Fitzgerald suffered a fatal heart attack at age forty-four. He died believing himself an absolute failure, with his books out of print and his name largely forgotten. Critical obituaries dismissed him as a mere relic of Jazz Age decadence, and church authorities initially refused his burial in the Catholic family plot at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Rockville, Maryland, citing his lapse in practice. Then came an extraordinary reversal. During World War II, the Council on Books in Wartime selected The Great Gatsby for mass distribution to American troops. In 1945, the program distributed one hundred and fifty-five thousand free paperback copies to U.S. service members. Young Americans reading in foxholes and military barracks rediscovered his brilliant, poetic prose. According to literary history records, this massive wartime program ignited the greatest posthumous revival in American literature. In 1975, through the joint efforts of his daughter Scottie and the Women’s Club of Rockville, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald were reinterred at Saint Mary’s Cemetery. The writer who died convinced of his own obscurity was finally reclaimed as the defining voice of the American Century. Conclusion: The Phantom of Summit Avenue Today, the house at 599 Summit Avenue stands as a National Historic Landmark. It is a quiet, stately row house on Cathedral Hill, overlooking the Mississippi River. The boy born on Laurel Avenue on September 24, 1896, spent his life trying to escape its shadow. He chased glamour across Manhattan, Paris, and Hollywood. He mistook wealth for belonging, and he paid an unthinkable price. Yet when his world collapsed, F. Scott Fitzgerald returned to that third-floor front room in St. Paul. In that quiet space, working late into the night, he transformed his deepest status anxieties into enduring art. His life reminds us that true fulfillment is never found in the applause of elite circles or the fleeting promises of material wealth. The genuine magic of the human experience lies in the courage to create, to take our quietest heartbreaks and fashion them into something beautiful, honest, and timeless.
