1:09
Speaker 2: Hollis, we are.
1:14
Speaker 4: We're in a kind of a crazy situation when it
1:17
Speaker 4: comes to when it comes to football season just got
1:22
Speaker 4: started all kinds of bad news and I know that
1:26
Speaker 4: you had mentioned to me about you know, you had
1:29
Speaker 4: some questions and some conversation that you were interested in.
1:34
Speaker 4: So I'm gonna I'm gonna turn it over to you
1:36
Speaker 4: and let you kind of go with it and see
1:38
Speaker 4: where we go.
1:38
Speaker 5: So as we know, if you've been paying attention to
1:40
Speaker 5: in the NFL, Miami Dolphin quarterback to a tongue of
1:44
Speaker 5: via loa, I've been practicing that. As I was gonna say,
1:47
Speaker 5: I had no shot at that to a tongue of biloa.
1:50
Speaker 2: We'll just say two for right now.
1:53
Speaker 5: But yeah, he has his third fourth concussion within the
1:58
Speaker 5: past physical year. Not silly the season, but within the
2:01
Speaker 5: past physical year. This one looked pretty bad. And you know,
2:06
Speaker 5: just from and I guess what I was wondering from
2:09
Speaker 5: you from a former player kind of just what are
2:13
Speaker 5: your general thoughts?
2:14
Speaker 2: I ask?
2:14
Speaker 5: I'll ask some more specific questions, but just what are
2:17
Speaker 5: your general thoughts when you see a guy who suffered
2:20
Speaker 5: that many concussions within that short period of time?
2:24
Speaker 2: What it? And and I and I've actually talked to
2:26
Speaker 2: a friend of mine.
2:27
Speaker 4: We had a brief conversation about about that specific situation,
2:33
Speaker 4: not even just him, but that specific situation when you
2:37
Speaker 4: are laying there on the turf sitting on the sidelines,
2:41
Speaker 4: go back home, get ready for whatever's coming next. As
2:45
Speaker 4: far as practice, it is the routine that you get
2:49
Speaker 4: in and it is the love of the game that
2:51
Speaker 4: that makes you say, Okay, I understand that I had
2:54
Speaker 4: a concussion. I understand that you know the risk that
2:56
Speaker 4: comes with it, But I still want to play. And
3:00
Speaker 4: I think where two is. I think maybe hopefully he's
3:07
Speaker 4: in that place of like, maybe this is not for
3:10
Speaker 4: me to maybe I shouldn't continue this, Maybe this could
3:13
Speaker 4: be a really bad situation for me going forward after
3:18
Speaker 4: I'm done plenty.
3:19
Speaker 5: Well, let's let's say it from this perspective, like being
3:22
Speaker 5: I'm just trying to get you back in player mode,
3:25
Speaker 5: you know, and let's if you can kind of jump
3:28
Speaker 5: into maybe his mindset or his situation. I'll say that
3:31
Speaker 5: that's a better, that's a better. Okay, that's better. But
3:35
Speaker 5: so jumping in this situation you are starting, you got
3:39
Speaker 5: a ton of money on the line. You know, I'm playing,
3:43
Speaker 5: You're doing well, team is doing good, You're steadily improving.
3:47
Speaker 2: Like, what are you doing? What are you thinking right now?
3:50
Speaker 2: I'm playing? You know I'm playing.
3:52
Speaker 4: Okay, you've already put now you know you put me
3:55
Speaker 4: on an hour, So that's four weeks. I know I
3:57
Speaker 4: got to be out four weeks. Hey man, if I'm
3:59
Speaker 4: out for four weeks, I'm good. I'm gonna be ready
4:02
Speaker 4: to play in spite of long term because I'm not
4:06
Speaker 4: thinking long term. I'm thinking, you know, and especially if
4:10
Speaker 4: you're having a good season. The key component for that is, hey,
4:14
Speaker 4: maybe it's the super Bowl. Maybe I can be the
4:17
Speaker 4: guy who can help get us to the super Bowl.
4:19
Speaker 4: I can get us into the playoffs. All of those
4:21
Speaker 4: kinds of things, All those things matter.
4:23
Speaker 5: So are so in this situation? Are you just thinking
4:26
Speaker 5: about the game? Are you not really considering health? I mean, like,
4:30
Speaker 5: what's that thought process?
4:32
Speaker 4: I'm sitting I'm sitting on the sidelines against the Lions,
4:37
Speaker 4: and I don't have a clue of the play that
4:40
Speaker 4: I just made.
4:42
Speaker 2: But all I can think about is getting back in
4:46
Speaker 2: the game.
4:47
Speaker 4: And this is from your plan from my playing days,
4:50
Speaker 4: Like I'm I'm I'm out, like I'm literally out on
4:54
Speaker 4: the turf. And today, like I said, and I've probably
4:57
Speaker 4: said this before, I don't know what happened short of
5:01
Speaker 4: going back and looking at the film, I'm on the sidelines,
5:04
Speaker 4: like I don't even remember the like the play, like
5:06
Speaker 4: I remember going to make the tackle and then after that,
5:09
Speaker 4: I'm on the sidelines smelling sauce.
5:11
Speaker 2: How many fingers? Hey, I want to go back in
5:14
Speaker 2: because there's something.
5:16
Speaker 4: About there's something that is addictive to in playing football,
5:24
Speaker 4: that you that you chase, that you want, you know,
5:28
Speaker 4: And I don't want to try to compare it to
5:29
Speaker 4: like some kind of major drug or anything like that,
5:31
Speaker 4: but I'm just saying, like, you, you man, you want
5:34
Speaker 4: to be on the field, and if and if and
5:37
Speaker 4: you want to take that injury and push it behind you.
5:40
Speaker 4: I'm playing with pins in my wrist. Doctor's telling me
5:44
Speaker 4: if you if you try to catch yourself, you're gonna
5:46
Speaker 4: break your form.
5:47
Speaker 2: You know. The worst thing is tuck it and you
5:49
Speaker 2: separate the shoulder, you know. So I got those options saying,
5:53
Speaker 2: I'm like.
5:53
Speaker 5: Okay, okay, So let's move it fast forward, maybe to
5:56
Speaker 5: today's game, because I think today's game, not only are
5:59
Speaker 5: you thinking about self preservation, but you're also thinking about
6:02
Speaker 5: you know, you have the business side of it, and
6:04
Speaker 5: I think that's a little bit more prevalent, Like if
6:07
Speaker 5: you're thinking of it from a players perspective. From today's era,
6:11
Speaker 5: how are you? Probably would the process still be the same.
6:14
Speaker 4: Sitting in the seat talking to you and you asking
6:17
Speaker 4: me that question, I would be thinking to myself like, Okay,
6:22
Speaker 4: what are my financial what's my financial situation?
6:25
Speaker 2: Can I actually leave the game and be okay? That
6:28
Speaker 2: would be? That would now?
6:30
Speaker 4: So that would cross your mind that sitting across the
6:33
Speaker 4: seat from you.
6:34
Speaker 5: No, no, no, I'm just saying, if if you jumped into
6:37
Speaker 5: like being a player today with all the money, all
6:40
Speaker 5: the endorsements, and all the things that our players are
6:43
Speaker 5: privy to today, see, do you still have the same
6:47
Speaker 5: mindset is that you're just trying to get back in
6:49
Speaker 5: the game, trying to play?
6:50
Speaker 2: Or do you does all the business stuff start to
6:52
Speaker 2: way heavier?
6:53
Speaker 4: See what I think the way that I'm I can
6:58
Speaker 4: only picture it like.
7:02
Speaker 2: It's it's gonna be the same.
7:04
Speaker 4: If you're wanting to play, you don't want to leave
7:06
Speaker 4: the game because you got You think there's more that
7:08
Speaker 4: you got into the that you can give to the game,
7:10
Speaker 4: and you don't want to leave it.
7:12
Speaker 2: But you also understand the.
7:14
Speaker 4: Risk that you're taking, and I think you're gonna have
7:18
Speaker 4: more people telling you to step away from the game.
7:22
Speaker 2: You got to take care of yourself. You got to.
7:23
Speaker 2: You gotta be more careful for yourself.
7:25
Speaker 4: But you me sitting in that situation, I'm thinking, Okay,
7:31
Speaker 4: I got four weeks. That's that's plenty of time for
7:34
Speaker 4: me to recover. And I'm right back in this. I'm
7:36
Speaker 4: right back in the seat. Yeah, I'm thinking, I'm right
7:39
Speaker 4: back into the seat.
7:40
Speaker 5: Because then we got to remember, too, it just got
7:42
Speaker 5: that two hundred million to it. And I think we
7:44
Speaker 5: discussed earlier that you know, depended on how he left,
7:48
Speaker 5: if he was like medically forced too, or if he
7:50
Speaker 5: stepped away, that would.
7:50
Speaker 2: Depend on that.
7:52
Speaker 4: That would dictate how much of that money, if not
7:55
Speaker 4: all of it, he can get. Yeah, and I think
7:58
Speaker 4: he gets to keep the signing BDUs regardless of Oh yeah.
8:00
Speaker 2: The bonus is once you once you sign, the bonus
8:02
Speaker 2: is yours. You know.
8:03
Speaker 4: Now, if it's not any kind of playing bonus or
8:06
Speaker 4: anything but a signing bonus, you sign, they're obligated to
8:09
Speaker 4: that amount.
8:10
Speaker 2: Okay. So so that's that's that part of it has
8:12
Speaker 2: already set.
8:13
Speaker 5: And I'm sure there's some sort of insurance and all
8:15
Speaker 5: that other stuff as well. So I guess my question
8:19
Speaker 5: is and kind of moving on from that, are we
8:22
Speaker 5: going to get to a point where we, you know,
8:25
Speaker 5: regulate that sort of these these injuries out of the game.
8:32
Speaker 2: I don't. I don't. I don't think that you can.
8:35
Speaker 4: You've changed how you can hit, but you can't you
8:40
Speaker 4: can't change how these spontaneous situations that happen in the game.
8:47
Speaker 4: Like so you're a quarterback, so you're you're standing in
8:52
Speaker 4: the pocket with with the ball. Somebody comes and hits
8:55
Speaker 4: you face on, but you go straight down to the
8:59
Speaker 4: ground and the first.
9:00
Speaker 2: Thing that hits is your head and that's happened to it. Yeah,
9:03
Speaker 2: and that's that's that's concussion opportunity too.
9:06
Speaker 4: It doesn't have to be me hitting you and you
9:08
Speaker 4: hitting me in the head, us being head to head.
9:11
Speaker 4: It's head to knee, it's head to the grounds, it's
9:14
Speaker 4: all of that.
9:15
Speaker 5: And I think people outside of the game, maybe who
9:18
Speaker 5: aren't familiar or never really played, they don't really understand
9:21
Speaker 5: that part of it. Like to me, the game is
9:23
Speaker 5: the game, and it doesn't really matter how much you regulated.
9:27
Speaker 5: It doesn't matter you know, what rules you put put
9:30
Speaker 5: in place, You're not going to prevent these sort of
9:32
Speaker 5: injuries from happening because like you said, even in two,
9:35
Speaker 5: even in this last instances to it, like was running.
9:38
Speaker 5: I mean he's running as hard as he can go,
9:39
Speaker 5: trying to get to make the play, and he actually
9:41
Speaker 5: runs into somebody's thine abdom area at full speed. These
9:45
Speaker 5: guys are brick hard, you know what I'm saying. And
9:47
Speaker 5: that guy's running at you. Yeah, and it happened that way.
9:50
Speaker 5: So it wasn't helm and Helmet wasn't some you know,
9:52
Speaker 5: violent hit and.
9:53
Speaker 4: You can and and the buddy that I was talking to.
9:57
Speaker 2: One of the things that.
10:00
Speaker 4: There's a realization of football is it's different than anything
10:05
Speaker 4: else because it's you can you can make a case
10:08
Speaker 4: that nobody's trying to make a pass in deference, nobody's
10:12
Speaker 4: trying to have a personal foul in the manner in
10:15
Speaker 4: which they hit you.
10:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, okay, you know what I'm saying.
10:18
Speaker 4: What happens though, in the process of the game, the
10:22
Speaker 4: movement and the and the instant that you make contact,
10:25
Speaker 4: where you make contact where you thought you were going
10:27
Speaker 4: to make contact.
10:28
Speaker 2: What are you going to do when I'm coming to
10:30
Speaker 2: hit you, you're coming down, you're coming down, or you
10:32
Speaker 2: going on changes.
10:35
Speaker 4: Where all that contact is or you're running at me
10:38
Speaker 4: and I'm running at you, and you hit me, and
10:41
Speaker 4: I'm like thinking, you know, well, shoot, I thought I
10:43
Speaker 4: was going to make the tack on.
10:44
Speaker 2: Next thing, I know, I'm falling back and where's my
10:46
Speaker 2: head going. It's going to the turf.
10:48
Speaker 5: And so okay, So let me ask you a different question,
10:52
Speaker 5: kind of going back to because I heard you say
10:54
Speaker 5: you talk to a buddy yours, I'm assuming that's a
10:57
Speaker 5: former player. Yes, so see some of your contemporaries maybe
11:02
Speaker 5: not doing so good mentally.
11:04
Speaker 2: We don't have to mention names, uhing like that?
11:06
Speaker 5: Does that change how you think about you know, if
11:10
Speaker 5: you continue playing, if you sustain all these various hits.
11:15
Speaker 2: I think that.
11:17
Speaker 4: Because I mean, some guys are mistake and yeah, there's
11:20
Speaker 4: a lot of guys that are that are messed up,
11:22
Speaker 4: and there's quite I've had quite a few friends that
11:25
Speaker 4: that have you know, passed on because of that. Now,
11:30
Speaker 4: with that being said, you know, if you ask any
11:35
Speaker 4: one of those guys, even guys who are struggling with
11:40
Speaker 4: you know, any kind of results of CTE, and ask
11:44
Speaker 4: them would you play again? They will tell you yes
11:49
Speaker 4: with no hesitation. Well, I don't think the question is
11:51
Speaker 4: playing again.
11:52
Speaker 2: I'm saying, like.
11:54
Speaker 5: Tua suffering all those concussions in this shorter period of
11:58
Speaker 5: time in his NFL career, and and what we don't know.
12:02
Speaker 5: We don't know how many he suffered in high excuse
12:04
Speaker 5: me college. We certainly don't know how many he suffered
12:07
Speaker 5: in high school and beyond. Because that's right practice and
12:09
Speaker 5: all that. I think, Well, let me just say it
12:13
Speaker 5: this way.
12:14
Speaker 4: Me as a former player, me knowing what I seeing,
12:17
Speaker 4: what I've seen with with other friends and former players
12:21
Speaker 4: and players in different places, I would say if I
12:25
Speaker 4: were to sit down with him, I'd be like, man, look.
12:30
Speaker 2: I get it. I get what you're going for.
12:33
Speaker 4: You want to be as good as great as you
12:36
Speaker 4: possibly can be at this game, at your position. You
12:39
Speaker 4: want the notoriety that comes with it, you want the
12:41
Speaker 4: money that comes with it. The question is are you
12:44
Speaker 4: prepared to not to be able to enjoy any of it.
12:50
Speaker 4: That's a reality, right, Yeah, that's kind of change.
12:54
Speaker 2: Yeah, that sort of backs you into it.
12:56
Speaker 4: Going right, Because at the end of the day, no one,
13:01
Speaker 4: no one could have no one would have thought to
13:03
Speaker 4: give me that simplicity of saying, Okay, look, you're sitting
13:06
Speaker 4: on the sideline.
13:07
Speaker 2: You know they didn't.
13:08
Speaker 4: You can see the three fingers you didn't already had
13:11
Speaker 4: the little ammonia that's kind of got you back on
13:13
Speaker 4: you don't remember to play. But but do you want
13:16
Speaker 4: to go back here in hindsight, now, I'll go ahead
13:21
Speaker 4: and sit the rest of this one out if that's
13:23
Speaker 4: gonna help my memory today. I would have been willing
13:26
Speaker 4: to sit that out.
13:27
Speaker 5: But but if you say that, do you know the
13:30
Speaker 5: consequences of saying something like that, yes, because basically in
13:34
Speaker 5: your area, you.
13:34
Speaker 2: Couldn't say that. No what in your ara, there's.
13:37
Speaker 4: No way, there's no way, I'm not And see coaching
13:41
Speaker 4: at State, one of the things that I didn't care
13:43
Speaker 4: if a player wanted to play. My thoughts were, I
13:45
Speaker 4: don't care if you want to play, if you had
13:47
Speaker 4: any kind of head injury, you had any kind of
13:50
Speaker 4: if that was an issue, but you wasn't playing.
13:52
Speaker 2: You just you're just not playing Because I know. I
13:56
Speaker 2: know that I played when I shouldn't have played. Yea,
13:59
Speaker 2: And I know that somebody should have known. Somebody should
14:02
Speaker 2: have shut me, somebody should have said something.
14:04
Speaker 5: I just look at like, and again I'm sort of
14:08
Speaker 5: comparing apples to oranges, right, I look at somebody like
14:11
Speaker 5: James lights Alt Tony. He was a boxer during the nineties, Middleway, you,
14:16
Speaker 5: wealth Away and all that sort of really really good boxer.
14:19
Speaker 5: They showed a comparison of him talking at the beginning
14:22
Speaker 5: of his career. He was a played quarterback when he
14:24
Speaker 5: was in high school, played football, and he was fluid,
14:27
Speaker 5: he was you know, he was very lucidy. He had
14:29
Speaker 5: a good mouthpiece. And they showed him today talking and
14:33
Speaker 5: it just sounds like two different people. You can see
14:36
Speaker 5: the cognitive decline. So and I say that to say, like,
14:40
Speaker 5: if I'm too you probably made a boatload of money
14:44
Speaker 5: by now, you'll have a tremendous opportunities to coach, to
14:49
Speaker 5: stay around the game, to be a broadcaster, do podcasts.
14:52
Speaker 5: You'll have opportunities to still work inside the game. Maybe
14:56
Speaker 5: those opportunities that you didn't have during that time.
15:00
Speaker 2: We didn't have social media all this. It was like
15:02
Speaker 2: limited spots.
15:03
Speaker 5: So I don't know if I would want to continue
15:07
Speaker 5: to play and risk my mental health because again we're
15:10
Speaker 5: not just talking about.
15:11
Speaker 4: A slow down cognitive ability. If you get so many
15:15
Speaker 4: hits to the head, you don't know how that's going
15:17
Speaker 4: to train your your brain structure. You don't know that
15:20
Speaker 4: you may have some onset of some mental illness. You
15:23
Speaker 4: don't know that part of it. Right, it's the guys
15:26
Speaker 4: that's left the game that was great. You look at
15:28
Speaker 4: a guy like Junior, say, nobody in the world would
15:30
Speaker 4: have ever thought that would have been the result. Right,
15:32
Speaker 4: So I don't know if I would be willing to
15:37
Speaker 4: risk that. And then also I don't know how you
15:41
Speaker 4: play with rectus abandonment. I don't know how you continue
15:43
Speaker 4: to play just free. But again, we're.
15:47
Speaker 5: Talking about documented and I say that I think it
15:51
Speaker 5: was the fourth This is the fourth concussion within a
15:54
Speaker 5: physical year.
15:55
Speaker 2: That makes that makes no sense.
15:57
Speaker 4: And we're not talking about a guy who just got
15:59
Speaker 4: his bill. We're not talking about those Look, you.
16:01
Speaker 5: Know what I'm saying. Sometimes you got your belt, run
16:04
Speaker 5: you walk to the sidelines. We're talking to guy that
16:06
Speaker 5: was good hit.
16:08
Speaker 4: Right, We're talking about a guy I'll just sit out
16:11
Speaker 4: the game, you'll be back your practice, money will get
16:13
Speaker 4: back rolling. We're talking about a guy who's on the
16:15
Speaker 4: sideline when his hands in a very strange position like
16:20
Speaker 4: he was, you know, suffering, and and and again, I
16:26
Speaker 4: think when I want to keep going back because that
16:30
Speaker 4: mindset of who's gonna take the game away from me?
16:38
Speaker 4: Players back in those days, I'm not gonna let you
16:41
Speaker 4: take the game away from it.
16:42
Speaker 2: I think players still think like that today too as well.
16:44
Speaker 4: But and what's crazy to me the money that they
16:49
Speaker 4: can make now, or the money that they've made now,
16:53
Speaker 4: the moment that you start to tell me, the moment
16:55
Speaker 4: I start feeling like, you know, I've taken too many
16:59
Speaker 4: of these kinds of hits.
17:01
Speaker 2: I'd like to think.
17:04
Speaker 4: That I would I would know when it would be
17:06
Speaker 4: time to walk away. And I think that decisions easier
17:09
Speaker 4: with one hundred million in the back. I think so too,
17:12
Speaker 4: because you like you look like guys like Aaron Donaldson. Right,
17:16
Speaker 4: he just retired. Aaron Donaldson probably could have played another
17:18
Speaker 4: three or four like productive seasons that d line and he.
17:22
Speaker 2: Just walks away.
17:23
Speaker 4: Right that that that wasn't necessarily happening in your day,
17:27
Speaker 4: particularly when you were at that higher level. Everybody wanted
17:32
Speaker 4: to be able to say, you know, when they're done,
17:35
Speaker 4: I played ten years.
17:37
Speaker 2: You know, I played eleven. Ye, you might have had
17:39
Speaker 2: to play that in order to bank up.
17:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, oh, there's no question you legitimately needed to
17:45
Speaker 4: get those kinds of years. So every season, no matter
17:48
Speaker 4: what the what the impact that football was playing on
17:52
Speaker 4: you physically, mentally, emotionally, you still had to love it.
17:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's I think football.
18:01
Speaker 4: Is the craziest sport to love simply because.
18:07
Speaker 2: The longer you.
18:08
Speaker 4: Play it, the harder you play it, it doesn't always
18:13
Speaker 4: benefit you.
18:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's I think that's a lot of
18:15
Speaker 2: sports though.
18:16
Speaker 5: I think if you look at you know, and I
18:18
Speaker 5: always say this, they talking about like football is a context.
18:21
Speaker 5: Football is a collision sports. It's not a contact sports
18:23
Speaker 5: beyond contact.
18:24
Speaker 2: But even when you.
18:25
Speaker 5: Look like those old basketball players like Kenny to just Smith,
18:28
Speaker 5: they have like those knockkne they'll have those like knee
18:30
Speaker 5: and problems.
18:31
Speaker 4: They they'll have like deformities almost And I say that light,
18:35
Speaker 4: I don't. I don't say that disparagingly. They'll have They'll
18:38
Speaker 4: just look the body be shaped a little different because
18:41
Speaker 4: how hard they went. So let me ask you two
18:43
Speaker 4: more questions on this, Like and again I'm not trying
18:46
Speaker 4: to get in your pocket in there like that, but
18:48
Speaker 4: far as NFL retirement, like what does that look like?
18:52
Speaker 4: Far as like the retirement pension plans and different things
18:55
Speaker 4: like that, like.
18:56
Speaker 5: Does you have to be a like fifty five sixty
18:59
Speaker 5: to get it? Like how much you getting based off
19:01
Speaker 5: the number of years? Or is that just strictly your
19:03
Speaker 5: own investments?
19:04
Speaker 2: No, it's it's it's based it's based off of.
19:07
Speaker 5: So every player gets this. If you every player can
19:09
Speaker 5: qualify for this.
19:10
Speaker 4: Yeah, everybody, everybody can qualify after at one point it
19:15
Speaker 4: was three years and three games, okay, and I think
19:22
Speaker 4: it may be it may it may have gone to
19:24
Speaker 4: four to four games that you have to be on
19:28
Speaker 4: an active roster, okay, so that that qualifies you for
19:32
Speaker 4: the minimum benefits okay, So and as and and according
19:38
Speaker 4: to X number of years that you play, the more
19:41
Speaker 4: the more retirement you get.
19:43
Speaker 2: You know, you heard it was like, I mean the
19:45
Speaker 2: way we've always heard it.
19:46
Speaker 5: Maybe I need to do my research on it, but
19:48
Speaker 5: it was like a certain you get a certain dollar
19:50
Speaker 5: amount per year that you played.
19:52
Speaker 2: Now, yes, your monthly retirement.
19:54
Speaker 4: Yes, like so if you if you if you take
19:56
Speaker 4: your retirement, it's a it's it's a it's a monthly
19:59
Speaker 4: it's a monthly out. And can you draw that you
20:03
Speaker 4: can you can draw it as I think as early
20:06
Speaker 4: as fifty five. And of course if you wait till sixty,
20:09
Speaker 4: if you wait till sixty five, it's pretty much, you know,
20:13
Speaker 4: structured the same way for everybody else.
20:15
Speaker 2: The longer that you don't the longer you don't take it,
20:17
Speaker 2: the more that it can be okay.
20:20
Speaker 4: But you know, but as you know, like for most
20:23
Speaker 4: players back in the day, you know, I know that
20:27
Speaker 4: I know players who were literally you know, couldn't wait
20:30
Speaker 4: to get to it, like you know, they needed to
20:33
Speaker 4: get to it, you know.
20:34
Speaker 2: And but again.
20:39
Speaker 4: When you go back and you start to look at
20:41
Speaker 4: when you look at football in the sixties, seventies, early seventies,
20:48
Speaker 4: for sure, Man, those dudes were just playing ball. Yeah,
20:52
Speaker 4: I mean that was a different day. Yeah, they were
20:53
Speaker 4: just they were just they were simply playing ball. They
20:55
Speaker 4: weren't there was no there was no luxury of I'm
21:00
Speaker 4: to get out of here and I'm going to be
21:02
Speaker 4: set for life.
21:03
Speaker 5: You know, it wasn't this the proven business model that
21:07
Speaker 5: it became in the eighties right now, And you.
21:09
Speaker 4: Know, eighty three they they they created a minimum wage
21:16
Speaker 4: of forty thousand. Now, imagine you're on a football roster
21:21
Speaker 4: and you're getting paid forty thousand and.
21:26
Speaker 2: You know, and people would talk about, well, you know,
21:28
Speaker 2: how did he go broke? Well, what you what you
21:33
Speaker 2: thought he was making is not really what he was making.
21:36
Speaker 4: And then when you start to look at you know,
21:39
Speaker 4: there's not a there's not a person even on a
21:41
Speaker 4: practice squad making that type of money they're making that.
21:47
Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's they're well into the six digits
21:50
Speaker 4: on the practice squad. And so you know, it's football
21:55
Speaker 4: is is a benefit if you can do it and
21:59
Speaker 4: wherever it is that you do it. But I think
22:03
Speaker 4: when you when we start talking about the injuries, we
22:07
Speaker 4: start talking about, you know, the.
22:10
Speaker 2: Situations that that on the younger.
22:14
Speaker 4: Level, especially that the game, the game is it's different there.
22:21
Speaker 4: You know, it's different because I'll make the case that
22:25
Speaker 4: part of the reasons that I think the young it
22:28
Speaker 4: impacts young kids, you know, the injuries that come up,
22:32
Speaker 4: it's just because the development isn't there yet, you know,
22:36
Speaker 4: and they're making kind of the type of contact that
22:41
Speaker 4: your body's not used to.
22:42
Speaker 5: And I got a question on that too. But just
22:44
Speaker 5: to clarify, so forty thousand and nineteen eighty three will
22:48
Speaker 5: be valued at one hundred and twenty two thousand dollars today,
22:51
Speaker 5: so that was pretty decent money back in the day.
22:54
Speaker 2: It wasn't bad. It wasn't bad use but you have
22:57
Speaker 2: some bag.
22:58
Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, that the benefit of that rationale there is,
23:05
Speaker 4: you know, things were cheaper and all those kinds of things.
23:08
Speaker 4: But but I don't I'm not I'm not really sold
23:12
Speaker 4: on that one.
23:14
Speaker 5: All right, So let me ask you final a question
23:16
Speaker 5: on this. Like, you are a youth coach. You obviously
23:20
Speaker 5: coach at the collegiate level. You coach at the high
23:22
Speaker 5: school level, and one thing you were always pretty particular
23:25
Speaker 5: on was equipment. So do you think with like the
23:29
Speaker 5: guardian cabs and new technology that that may.
23:33
Speaker 2: Be able to lessen some of the.
23:36
Speaker 5: Injuries, particularly when it comes to concussions.
23:39
Speaker 4: I would make I would go this far, okay if
23:44
Speaker 4: I'm if I'm in the political realm, hint, hint, I
23:50
Speaker 4: would I would start to talk about youth sports and
23:58
Speaker 4: those caps being like mandatory because these little kids don't
24:08
Speaker 4: they fall and can hit their head.
24:10
Speaker 5: See it's just see, that's a political land mind that
24:14
Speaker 5: I would never step on because I don't to then
24:17
Speaker 5: what we just said about two of it's a point
24:20
Speaker 5: where it's you know, a six year old is not
24:23
Speaker 5: necessarily going to give another six year old some concussion
24:26
Speaker 5: by hitting hard, right, that's not necessarily probably gonna be
24:29
Speaker 5: the case. But to our point, if you're running full
24:31
Speaker 5: speed at me, I'm running full speed at.
24:33
Speaker 2: You, even at six years old, my head hits your knee.
24:36
Speaker 4: I don't know if a guardian cap or anything else
24:38
Speaker 4: protects that, or if I fall get tackled a certain way,
24:41
Speaker 4: my head hits the turf. But what we do know
24:43
Speaker 4: for a fact already, Yeah, okay that without it there's
24:49
Speaker 4: an issue.
24:49
Speaker 2: I mean maybe so there's not a maybe so because
24:54
Speaker 2: that's the conversation that we're having.
24:55
Speaker 4: Well you mean with the like the guardian caps in
24:57
Speaker 4: different I'm saying, without the Guardian cap, we know there's issue.
25:00
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely. So to add it, what harm are
25:05
Speaker 2: we doing?
25:05
Speaker 5: I mean, you may be writing that in I just
25:08
Speaker 5: think I'm not sure. And again I'm just I would
25:11
Speaker 5: probably set myself up, but I'm just not sure that
25:15
Speaker 5: kids ought to be playing tackle football. Honestly, Well, I'm
25:18
Speaker 5: not sure that you know a kid that's five six,
25:22
Speaker 5: seven eight nine should be playing tackle football.
25:25
Speaker 2: See, and I'll I'm not.
25:28
Speaker 4: I do I do use football, okay, and so, and
25:34
Speaker 4: we're actually practicing today. And I would say this to
25:42
Speaker 4: that comment. We didn't start when I when I was playing.
25:47
Speaker 4: We started at seven.
25:48
Speaker 2: That's when we started. Yet and to me, when you
25:53
Speaker 2: start talking about you know, four and five, you know,
25:59
Speaker 2: I I.
26:00
Speaker 4: Think that if they want to play football, I think
26:04
Speaker 4: that's I think that's flag whether and I and I'm
26:08
Speaker 4: cool with flag with you with with.
26:10
Speaker 2: Equipment on so that they're so that they're used to it.
26:13
Speaker 5: I'm just no, I'm saying anybody probably under about maybe
26:17
Speaker 5: eleven twelve, I'm not sure that you ought to be
26:20
Speaker 5: playing tackle football. Again, I'm not necessarily opposed to it.
26:23
Speaker 5: I just don't know, and I haven't done enough research
26:26
Speaker 5: to say, but I'm just not sure. Again, outside of us,
26:31
Speaker 5: and we've talked this to death, and I don't want
26:32
Speaker 5: to go down this road, but outside there being some
26:35
Speaker 5: you know, regulations at a county state, like a governmental
26:42
Speaker 5: body where you can actually regulate these things, right, because again,
26:47
Speaker 5: youth sports have done a great job of they don't
26:50
Speaker 5: practice as much as we did, they don't hit as
26:52
Speaker 5: much as we did.
26:53
Speaker 2: There's regulations on that, and they try.
26:55
Speaker 5: To teach you heads of football, which is awesome and
26:57
Speaker 5: great and that's what they should be doing. But even
27:01
Speaker 5: with heads of football, you're not going to prevent an
27:03
Speaker 5: injury like to a hand.
27:04
Speaker 2: That's not about heads of football. That's just football.
27:07
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the reality of the football. And we get
27:11
Speaker 4: ready to go to break but I want to say
27:12
Speaker 4: this before we go.
27:14
Speaker 6: Let's face it, bad things happen to good people seriously
27:17
Speaker 6: injured in a car accident, trucking accident, or.
27:19

27:49
Speaker 4: that they that they are at risk. And and and
27:55
Speaker 4: and again. I don't want to hurt youth football, you know,
27:58
Speaker 4: at all, But I'm thinking that we could. I think
28:01
Speaker 4: there's a reason for us to consider trying.
28:03
Speaker 2: To fix it. Yeah, I got you. All right.

29:09
Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back and we've we've
29:13
Speaker 4: spent the first I guess half of the show.
29:19
Speaker 2: Talking about football and its injuries. I don't know. I
29:27
Speaker 2: don't know, Hollas.
29:28
Speaker 4: As we wrap this up, like I know that you know,
29:32
Speaker 4: I know how football has impacted me in my life
29:36
Speaker 4: and and the and the things that I have to
29:40
Speaker 4: do to do to function as normal as I possibly
29:45
Speaker 4: can be.
29:45
Speaker 2: I just think that, you know, football is a great game, but.
29:50
Speaker 4: I think that I think that we we we need
29:53
Speaker 4: we do need people to to step in it. And
29:58
Speaker 4: to your point about not really like to speak on
30:01
Speaker 4: some of this kind of stuff, I think the people
30:04
Speaker 4: who should be talking about this stuff should be guys
30:06
Speaker 4: who have formerly played and I think that should there
30:10
Speaker 4: should be a committee built around players who have played
30:14
Speaker 4: the game to make these decisions. It's kind of like,
30:18
Speaker 4: you know, not that we're going to go here, but
30:21
Speaker 4: like like when you start talking about transferring, you should
30:24
Speaker 4: you start talking about all these different kind of rules
30:26
Speaker 4: and regulations and things that you should.
30:27
Speaker 2: Be able to do.
30:28
Speaker 4: I'm not sure that that is, you know, a suit
30:31
Speaker 4: and ties the person that makes that up. You know,
30:33
Speaker 4: I think that, like, why wouldn't you have a committee
30:36
Speaker 4: and say, Okay, when we're gonna talk when we're gonna
30:38
Speaker 4: deal with sports, we're gonna have a sports committee, and
30:41
Speaker 4: we want to get the impact what we think these
30:44
Speaker 4: kinds of changes could be from these players, these people
30:49
Speaker 4: that are former players, because a lot I mean, you know,
30:52
Speaker 4: and I hate to say this, but you know, some
30:54
Speaker 4: of these issues, the whole transfer issue starts because a
30:58
Speaker 4: dad wants somebody that to to participate in a in
31:04
Speaker 4: a sport when they change schools, so changes the whole rule,
31:07
Speaker 4: That changes the whole dynamics, the whole landscape.
31:10
Speaker 2: Of sportsney work. Yeah, that's so.
31:13
Speaker 4: I think that's I think that's part of I think
31:16
Speaker 4: that's part.
31:16
Speaker 2: Of the the issue.
31:19
Speaker 5: I mean, while we're having these I would agree with that,
31:21
Speaker 5: and I think that you know it, when we're talking
31:26
Speaker 5: about rule change, I think one of the things that
31:28
Speaker 5: hurts football is that it's it's too they change rules
31:32
Speaker 5: to they sort of nitpicking football, where as a sport
31:36
Speaker 5: like baseball, they don't move fast enough.
31:39
Speaker 2: What are starting to catch up.
31:40
Speaker 5: But I think that if we did have like a
31:42
Speaker 5: body it needs to be comprised of a variety of
31:46
Speaker 5: individuals so you can get up a lot of viewpoints.
31:50
Speaker 5: And I think it also needs to be maybe not
31:52
Speaker 5: associated like its own association, maybe if nothing else, to
31:57
Speaker 5: just make rule recommendations.
31:58
Speaker 2: Well, so it's not it's not.
32:00
Speaker 5: Like working in the interests of college football or anybody else.
32:03
Speaker 5: It's it's it's its own entity. It's separate, it's and
32:08
Speaker 5: it's just given an analysis and it's making the rule
32:12
Speaker 5: recommendations and putting it out to the public.
32:15
Speaker 4: Who would okay, so, and you're saying who should be
32:19
Speaker 4: who would be part of that?
32:20
Speaker 5: If I would say, you know, you would have former coaches,
32:22
Speaker 5: former players, you have referees, you would have doctors, you
32:26
Speaker 5: would have mental health, behavior health professional lawyers, judges, politicians,
32:32
Speaker 5: and just maybe and I would say moms and dads
32:36
Speaker 5: as well. So you would just have a you know,
32:39
Speaker 5: a very diverse board of individuals who are approaching this
32:42
Speaker 5: thing from a different perspective, very various perspectives in order
32:46
Speaker 5: to you know, flush out some of these rules. And
32:49
Speaker 5: and I think that what that would do it would
32:52
Speaker 5: let everybody not necessarily have a voice at the table,
32:55
Speaker 5: but you would hear all the different concerns. So because
32:59
Speaker 5: sometimes we're not looking at it from you know, we
33:01
Speaker 5: may not look at it from a player standpoint. You're
33:03
Speaker 5: just looking at it from like you said, a suit
33:05
Speaker 5: or the exactly right.
33:06
Speaker 4: And and again sometimes those those those whole the whole
33:09
Speaker 4: start of these situations are created because somebody is wanting
33:13
Speaker 4: to do something for their.
33:14
Speaker 5: Child, yeah, their child, or their interest the exactly so
33:19
Speaker 5: so we got we got your boys, the thunder and
33:22
Speaker 5: heard they're going to see them buck eyes.
33:27
Speaker 2: Could they pull it off? You know? Marshall.
33:31
Speaker 4: Marshall has had that, you know, especially with with the coach,
33:37
Speaker 4: they have been able to pull off some games that
33:40
Speaker 4: you would absolutely.
33:42
Speaker 2: Just know for a fact they are not going to win. Right.
33:49
Speaker 4: But if I'm Ohio State, okay, and I'm I'm I'm
33:54
Speaker 4: I'm the coach there, I'm telling you that these this
33:59
Speaker 4: team that Marshall thundering Herd team has beaten this team,
34:04
Speaker 4: that team.
34:06
Speaker 2: So they're gonna.
34:08
Speaker 4: Come in here and assume as soon that they got
34:11
Speaker 4: they got that they got a chance, because can't nobody
34:13
Speaker 4: tell them that they don't have a chance.
34:15
Speaker 5: I think like this is one of those weeks in
34:17
Speaker 5: which you just pop in the tape Marshall versus Notre
34:21
Speaker 5: Dame Press play.
34:23
Speaker 2: Let's just watch you guys.
34:24
Speaker 5: Know the Dame was ranked all that Virginia Tech Marshall.
34:28
Speaker 5: Let's watch you, guys, if you.
34:31
Speaker 2: Might be the only games that I've watched.
34:32
Speaker 5: That's the only thing I'm watching because I think physically,
34:35
Speaker 5: I think obviously Marshall's gonna be a little bit outmatched.
34:38
Speaker 5: But I don't think and again I'm not sure. I
34:41
Speaker 5: don't think Ohio State, based off of that, is gonna
34:44
Speaker 5: come and sleep walk through this game. I can't see
34:46
Speaker 5: that based on Marshall's record, how they do that, because
34:50
Speaker 5: that's the reputation on coach Huff.
34:52
Speaker 2: He'll win the big one, but he'll lose the little ones.
34:54
Speaker 4: Yes, and and and and again there would be there.
35:00
Speaker 4: There's no reason that I would have ever thought in
35:02
Speaker 4: my four years at Marshall that Marshall would even be
35:05
Speaker 4: playing some of these teams more or less winning. Okay,
35:10
Speaker 4: and that magic.
35:14
Speaker 2: Is something that I think.
35:19
Speaker 4: Sales kids to come to Marshall. And what happens is
35:24
Speaker 4: you have some some major D one players on that roster. Yeah,
35:30
Speaker 4: you know, like you know, coach he put that out there,
35:35
Speaker 4: and and so you you want to play against those
35:39
Speaker 4: guys you wanted because you know that you belong there.
35:42
Speaker 2: You could play there if you really wanted to.
35:44
Speaker 4: So I think I think one of the one of
35:47
Speaker 4: the things that I think that coach Huff has done
35:49
Speaker 4: for Marshall is is he has built a confidence in
35:54
Speaker 4: games where they should not have a chance to win,
36:00
Speaker 4: and they come out and win it. Ye do I
36:03
Speaker 4: can I say that I'm gonna I think that they're
36:05
Speaker 4: gonna win.
36:06
Speaker 2: There's absolutely no way I can say. I don't know, man.
36:09
Speaker 5: I think I think if it's like week one, I
36:13
Speaker 5: think if it's week one, week two, where you know,
36:17
Speaker 5: maybe you just haven't had the time, you're excited to play,
36:20
Speaker 5: you just looking You're looking at Marshall, but really you're
36:22
Speaker 5: looking at you know, Ohio State, You're looking at Notre Dame.
36:25
Speaker 5: You're looking at if Ohio State was kind of looking
36:27
Speaker 5: past whoever else they had to play. But I think
36:30
Speaker 5: it's because you're getting a little I think this is
36:32
Speaker 5: the fourth week of the season, you're a little bit
36:33
Speaker 5: more settled in. And like I said, I think if
36:36
Speaker 5: I'm the coaches that were watching Virginia Tech Marshall, were
36:39
Speaker 5: watching Notre Dame Marshall and if you come here slip
36:42
Speaker 5: and you come here sleeping, this is what's gonna happen
36:44
Speaker 5: to you. So I think their ambitions is bigger. So again,
36:48
Speaker 5: I would be hard pressed the best bet against Ohio State.
36:51
Speaker 2: But you know, you never know what Marshall can do.
36:54
Speaker 2: So so.
36:56
Speaker 4: But but and I also say that with the caveat
36:58
Speaker 4: that you know, the games that I've watched for Marshall's
37:02
Speaker 4: just the offensive play just has not been there.
37:04
Speaker 2: It's been a struggle offensively. I was gonna, I was
37:07
Speaker 2: gonna go there because I don't know if I've seen yet.
37:14
Speaker 4: Marshall being dominant on the offensive side, and I and
37:20
Speaker 4: I do think I'm not sure they have come up
37:23
Speaker 4: to where to the level.
37:25
Speaker 2: In which they need to be on defense.
37:28
Speaker 4: I think it's good, but I think you got you know,
37:31
Speaker 4: you got secondary issues and you know so so now
37:37
Speaker 4: if there's any opportunity that you can throw the ball
37:39
Speaker 4: and you can run the ball, now you're now you're
37:42
Speaker 4: in Now you're really in trouble.
37:45
Speaker 5: And I think a game like this again, you never
37:48
Speaker 5: want to again because Marshall's proven us wrong a few
37:51
Speaker 5: times now. But all in all, I think this is
37:54
Speaker 5: a game you do. You want to stay in, you
37:56
Speaker 5: don't want to get blown out. You want to pick
37:58
Speaker 5: up some points. You want to have some production in
38:01
Speaker 5: the game, even if it's twenty one to fifty something
38:04
Speaker 5: or twenty one forty something, you know what I mean. Yes,
38:06
Speaker 5: you want to have production. You want to show a
38:09
Speaker 5: little something in this game.
38:10
Speaker 4: And I don't even care personally me, I don't even
38:13
Speaker 4: care if that's the same old state.
38:15
Speaker 2: They they.
38:18
Speaker 4: Put some guys in, some of their second strings, guys
38:21
Speaker 4: in to go in and play, so they're subbing and
38:24
Speaker 4: we still score. Yeah, I'm fine because what that's telling
38:29
Speaker 4: me is that my team is not gonna quit.
38:31
Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I like that. Yeah.
38:33
Speaker 4: So to me, I think if if there's anything that
38:35
Speaker 4: I think Marshall has the opportunity to prove, play that
38:40
Speaker 4: game all the way out. Yeah, play that game from
38:44
Speaker 4: the start of the clock to the last.
38:46
Speaker 2: Tick of it, and play hard and score on the
38:50
Speaker 2: last drive. Yeah you know. And and then.
38:54
Speaker 4: I'm gonna so let me switch it back to let's
38:57
Speaker 4: talk to you about the coach. You know, people are saying, okay,
39:01
Speaker 4: so if this game gets out of hand, this should be,
39:03
Speaker 4: this should be you know, Huff could be in in trouble.
39:08
Speaker 4: Is this the game you really want to measure? Is
39:10
Speaker 4: this because I don't see I'm with you like I'm no,
39:14
Speaker 4: this is the game that you should be happy that
39:17
Speaker 4: that that maybe that they schedule you know, I don't
39:20
Speaker 4: know why, you know, maybe, but yeah, we just really
39:23
Speaker 4: probably money. So that benefits the future for Marshall. So
39:31
Speaker 4: you take that loss and move on. You probably don't
39:34
Speaker 4: even want to watch the film. If you lose it bad,
39:36
Speaker 4: you're probably not gonna watch the film. You're getting right
39:38
Speaker 4: in the next week.
39:39
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's one game.
39:40
Speaker 5: So and I and if I'm coaching, I would want
39:43
Speaker 5: to again obviously. You you come into the game, you
39:45
Speaker 5: want to.
39:46
Speaker 2: Want to win. Nobody, no, no player does not want
39:48
Speaker 2: to win.
39:48
Speaker 5: But if you see it's getting out of hand, then
39:50
Speaker 5: I would, you know, I would want to get my
39:52
Speaker 5: I would want to get my guys, get the roster
39:53
Speaker 5: in the game. You know, let everybody play. Like you said,
39:56
Speaker 5: I want to get out healthy as the main thing
39:58
Speaker 5: we talk about to it right, you don't want to
40:01
Speaker 5: have your players, especially the guys you're going to be
40:03
Speaker 5: depending on throughout the season banged up, just trying to,
40:07
Speaker 5: you know, prove a point. So I don't know, I
40:09
Speaker 5: agree with that, and I just I hope that you know,
40:12
Speaker 5: we can have a good showing.
40:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, and now before we because you look like you
40:17
Speaker 4: get raid switch on me. Let me let me ask
40:20
Speaker 4: this question, because you know, I'm hearing people that are talking.
40:23
Speaker 4: You know that okay, now you know people starting to
40:26
Speaker 4: starting to mumble that you know will help make it
40:28
Speaker 4: through the season.
40:30
Speaker 2: Where you know, where is that at? Do you.
40:36
Speaker 4: Do you think that this that that that he's at
40:40
Speaker 4: that juncture or.
40:41
Speaker 2: Is it fan is it fan base?
40:44
Speaker 4: I think man an issue more so than maybe I
40:47
Speaker 4: think that we're gonna have to see how this maybe
40:49
Speaker 4: how the season plays out.
40:52
Speaker 5: Again to your point, we can't make this week, Come on,
40:56
Speaker 5: guys with us. We're not judging that off this week.
40:59
Speaker 5: But I think you know, if you can, because I
41:02
Speaker 5: think it's what conference us say now or excuse me something.
41:05
Speaker 5: So I think if you can, you know, be competitive
41:07
Speaker 5: in the sun Belt, I think you could.
41:09
Speaker 2: You know, he'll he'll last.
41:12
Speaker 5: But I think I was going to switch gears because
41:14
Speaker 5: the same conversation is going over with Neil Brown and
41:16
Speaker 5: WVU right, and to me, to me, that's more of
41:19
Speaker 5: a like, you gotta be Kansas this week, y'all both
41:23
Speaker 5: wanted to. And I think that people aren't necessarily seeing
41:27
Speaker 5: the improvements and the steps right because we're thinking at
41:30
Speaker 5: this point, WVU is gonna be competing for a Big
41:32
Speaker 5: twelve title. Marshall's gonna be competing for a Sun Belt title.
41:35
Speaker 5: So I think that's where people want to be at
41:37
Speaker 5: at this point. Not necessarily that you're winning or you're
41:40
Speaker 5: gonna undefeat it, but you gotta be competing for WVU.
41:43
Speaker 5: You got to kind of be at this point. Knock
41:44
Speaker 5: them on the door the college playoff for twelve.
41:46
Speaker 2: Teams and do you think they're knocking? No, they're not. Not.
41:52
Speaker 2: I don't. I don't know.
41:55
Speaker 4: You know, I'm an and believe it or not, I'm
41:59
Speaker 4: a Neil Brown kind of fan. Like I like some
42:01
Speaker 4: of the things that he has said and and and
42:04
Speaker 4: kind of like just kind of his whole mannerisms and
42:07
Speaker 4: stuff like that.
42:08
Speaker 2: I kind of enjoyed that.
42:10
Speaker 4: I just don't know if if it's enough to motivate
42:16
Speaker 4: the kids to go out, I should come talking about kids,
42:19
Speaker 4: but the young men out to.
42:22
Speaker 5: Say them, I know how you compete when like, I
42:26
Speaker 5: don't know how you can because if you're looking at
42:29
Speaker 5: like the old Big East days right where a lot
42:32
Speaker 5: of the talent pool was coming from Florida, you're coming
42:35
Speaker 5: from Georgia and you're just really coming up through the
42:37
Speaker 5: pipeline because you know, you had Miami there, got those
42:40
Speaker 5: kids were staying on the East Coast. Parents get to
42:42
Speaker 5: see him in and out a lot. I just don't
42:44
Speaker 5: know how you compete at a Big twelve, excuse me,
42:47
Speaker 5: in the Big twelve trying to recruit in Texas. I mean,
42:50
Speaker 5: I don't Again, I don't know if that's the plan.
42:52
Speaker 5: I don't know if how much the recruiting down there,
42:54
Speaker 5: but you would seem like you would try to get
42:56
Speaker 5: some of those pool of players, but it's so many
42:58
Speaker 5: colleges or and know teams and organizations they can play
43:02
Speaker 5: for down there, what's the incentive to come to w
43:05
Speaker 5: v U. So it's like to me, I just don't
43:07
Speaker 5: know if we're getting the consistent talent like we used
43:11
Speaker 5: to get.
43:12
Speaker 2: And that that makes sense because what's if you.
43:16
Speaker 4: Are at a WVU level, is there another team that
43:21
Speaker 4: WVU plays recruiting you? Also, I'm sure it is, I say,
43:26
Speaker 4: And if that be the case, what do you what
43:29
Speaker 4: what's gonna be your judgment of which one which one
43:32
Speaker 4: of those pits. So when you're thinking about going to college,
43:35
Speaker 4: what's and you're looking at to get a scholarship and
43:39
Speaker 4: you got two schools and one school's got a great
43:43
Speaker 4: football history, one school is struggling. Where you're gonna go, Well,
43:48
Speaker 4: I mean, w got a pretty No, I'm not saying
43:52
Speaker 4: that they don't. But the current see because when you say,
43:56
Speaker 4: but you said history, they have a history.
43:59
Speaker 2: But the kids that are coming through are not looking
44:02
Speaker 2: at the history. Okay, I'll give you that. They're they're
44:05
Speaker 2: they're they're looking at what did you do last week?
44:07
Speaker 2: What did you do last year? What is your season
44:11
Speaker 2: like now? And I think that's the I think that's
44:14
Speaker 2: the that's the place where.
44:18
Speaker 4: Marshall n WU loses on uh, they lose on some
44:22
Speaker 4: of these kids who that that that's keeping them from
44:27
Speaker 4: being able to sign some of these kids because I
44:29
Speaker 4: just don't know. I don't know if we've got the
44:33
Speaker 4: current history of these of the two teams, our two
44:37
Speaker 4: schools to pull in the great athlete, the great quarterback.
44:43
Speaker 5: But I see, I sort of disagree with that because,
44:46
Speaker 5: like anybody can be turned around if you get those
44:49
Speaker 5: right guys. I think the problem is just recruiting. Like
44:51
Speaker 5: I said, you're competing against Texas, Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma.
44:57
Speaker 5: You're competing against UH organization. I keep saying organization. But
45:01
Speaker 5: you're completeing against colleges who have a recruiting base out
45:04
Speaker 5: of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and going into Florida. If you
45:08
Speaker 5: look at wvu's roster, yeah, they got some Florida cats
45:11
Speaker 5: on there, a few, not like they used to have,
45:13
Speaker 5: but they got mainly East Coast cast they're not getting
45:16
Speaker 5: they don't have I haven't seen one player from Texas yet,
45:19
Speaker 5: you know, so.
45:20
Speaker 2: You're not getting Georgia.
45:21
Speaker 5: They got maybe one or two Georgia, but you're not
45:24
Speaker 5: getting the talent from Texas.
45:26
Speaker 2: Where back in the.
45:27
Speaker 5: Day, when you were in the Big East and you're
45:30
Speaker 5: competing against Miami, Syracuse, Rutgers, a lot of the recruiting
45:35
Speaker 5: was coming from Pennsylvania, the New Jersey area, Ohio, and
45:39
Speaker 5: some West Virginia, but in mainly Florida. And they were
45:43
Speaker 5: able to go to Florida, able to go to Georgia,
45:45
Speaker 5: able to go to Alabama and get some of those
45:47
Speaker 5: guys up. I mean even at state back in the day,
45:50
Speaker 5: right we had a plethora of got catched from Florida. Yes,
45:53
Speaker 5: you're not getting those same cats now, you're getting a
45:55
Speaker 5: lot of cats from the East counton. I'm not trying
45:57
Speaker 5: to be like a regional bias, but we're competing against
46:02
Speaker 5: Texas teams and not they got full of Texas players
46:04
Speaker 5: that we ain't full of Texas Alabama and the Louisiana
46:08
Speaker 5: players that we ain't getting. I don't even see one
46:10
Speaker 5: Louisiana player on here.
46:12
Speaker 4: And and let's I mean, when you start talking about
46:15
Speaker 4: high school football.
46:16
Speaker 2: It's different down there. Different, That's what I'm saying. Different.
46:20
Speaker 2: It's a life. I heard I.
46:22
Speaker 5: Think pac Man Jones said this, and I think he
46:25
Speaker 5: said this. He was like, if you look, I think
46:28
Speaker 5: it was him. It was a oh it was a
46:30
Speaker 5: former player who said this. If it wasn't him, But
46:32
Speaker 5: he said, when you look at Texas and Florida, he's like,
46:35
Speaker 5: Florida got the best athletes. Were talking about hig school football,
46:38
Speaker 5: Texas got the best facilities. If you look at these
46:42
Speaker 5: facilities at in Texas, high school facilities are comparable to WVU.
46:48
Speaker 5: They're spending millions on stadiums and workout facilities, and you're
46:52
Speaker 5: getting guys who already are in essence in college programs
46:57
Speaker 5: at Texas, at Texas Tech, at Baylor, at TCU, at Oklahoma.
47:00
Speaker 5: We ain't getting those cats.
47:02
Speaker 4: So how we necessarily supposed to compete in a conference
47:05
Speaker 4: where we're not even making a dit in recruiting.
47:09
Speaker 2: You see what I'm saying, I do, I do, and
47:13
Speaker 2: we're not competitive on that end. And we both know this.
47:17
Speaker 4: You recruiting is the most critical piece of building a program.
47:25
Speaker 4: And you at some point, you you used to could
47:30
Speaker 4: do this. You could get a quarterback maybe a year
47:34
Speaker 4: or so later, get a good receiver, maybe a year
47:36
Speaker 4: or so later, get a good running back, and then
47:38
Speaker 4: all of a sudden, now you're pretty good by the
47:41
Speaker 4: time you do that. Try to do that now that
47:43
Speaker 4: quarterback's gone.
47:44
Speaker 5: Yeah, And like I said, I don't see one in
47:46
Speaker 5: that kid. And I'm scrolling through the roster now I
47:48
Speaker 5: don't see one cat from Texas. I see maybe one
47:52
Speaker 5: or two cats from Oklahoma. You see a lot of
47:54
Speaker 5: Georgia Cats, a lot of players from the region. You know,
47:58
Speaker 5: we're talking about Ohio West Virginia, Maryland, DC, some New Jersey.
48:03
Speaker 5: But like I said, you're not playing against the same
48:06
Speaker 5: type of players, so at the same And again I'm
48:08
Speaker 5: not trying to disparage the players that are on the roster,
48:11
Speaker 5: but I'm saying Texas football is Florida football different. I'm
48:15
Speaker 5: saying Texas. If you look California, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Florida,
48:21
Speaker 5: that football is just different down there, and.
48:25
Speaker 4: It's it's it's a it's a lifestyle.
48:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's different. Everybody. They put way more resources into
48:31
Speaker 2: it and it's just different. Man.
48:34
Speaker 4: Okay, So all right, I'm gonna so let me let
48:36
Speaker 4: me do this and and I'm not I'm not banging
48:40
Speaker 4: on our state, but comparable to West Virginia, what where
48:49
Speaker 4: are we? Where do you think we are lacking in
48:52
Speaker 4: how we approach the success of our young athletes? And
48:58
Speaker 4: I'm i and I'll throw this out first, Okay, I
49:03
Speaker 4: think our problem is is we're in the moment like
49:06
Speaker 4: we are. You know, we're rooting our kid on to
49:11
Speaker 4: be good and you football, be good in middle school
49:14
Speaker 4: and be good in high school, and that good isn't
49:19
Speaker 4: great enough to maybe go to one of these D
49:22
Speaker 4: one schools, and so I think, and I could be wrong,
49:29
Speaker 4: we're not We're not pushing our kids that want to
49:34
Speaker 4: be in sports, who want to play in college ball,
49:37
Speaker 4: maybe want to go to the NFL.
49:39
Speaker 2: We're not pushing them to be to understand what the
49:47
Speaker 2: requirements are. I disagree with that totally.
49:50
Speaker 5: The problem with West Virginia is just that this West
49:53
Speaker 5: Virginia has about one point three million people that would
49:56
Speaker 5: fit inside the city of Houston and probably not even
49:59
Speaker 5: make a day.
50:00
Speaker 2: We're just small. We don't have enough people.
50:03
Speaker 5: Again, if you if you took a city in Texas,
50:06
Speaker 5: you could take the entire population of West Virginia and
50:10
Speaker 5: fit it inside a city in Texas or city in Louisiana.
50:14
Speaker 5: So what I'm saying is you just don't have the numbers.
50:17
Speaker 5: You're not gonna you're not going to recruit if you
50:21
Speaker 5: took just if you just recruit the city of Baton
50:23
Speaker 5: Rouge or city of New Orleans or just the city
50:25
Speaker 5: of Houston, they're not gonna. That's not enough talent to
50:28
Speaker 5: just fill to to to fill a whole roster.
50:33
Speaker 2: Maybe maybe not.
50:34
Speaker 5: And I would say number two, it's not about the
50:36
Speaker 5: mentality it's just that again we we don't have the numbers.
50:39
Speaker 5: So that's number one and number two. Our kids don't
50:41
Speaker 5: run track. So if you look at Louisiana, if you
50:45
Speaker 5: look at Texas, if you look at Florida, those kids
50:48
Speaker 5: run track.
50:49
Speaker 2: We we we.
50:51
Speaker 4: I don't know if if you're five, if you're five
50:54
Speaker 4: nine and you run a four to four and you're
50:56
Speaker 4: a wide receiver, why are you playing a you stop?
51:00
Speaker 5: Stop it, go run track? Your future is probably not
51:03
Speaker 5: in basketball. Unfortunately. I'm not trying to, you know, diminish
51:07
Speaker 5: your dream, but run track and then maybe you could
51:10
Speaker 5: build it up a little better because of the problem
51:12
Speaker 5: is that once you start competing nationally again, you may
51:17
Speaker 5: have the skills set to compete nationally, which I think
51:20
Speaker 5: our kids do. I think there's been too much of
51:22
Speaker 5: a premium on skill set and not athleticism.
51:25
Speaker 4: Well, okay, I'm gonna agree, don't have the numbers. The numbers,
51:30
Speaker 4: I get the numbers. But but but we ought to
51:32
Speaker 4: be able to be producing and continuously producing a couple
51:36
Speaker 4: two or three.
51:37
Speaker 2: We do. We have two roster.
51:40
Speaker 4: But I was just gonna say, look because what I know,
51:43
Speaker 4: what I know is when we produce one when we
51:46
Speaker 4: get one that's going that's going to college and playing,
51:50
Speaker 4: they get to the next level.
51:51
Speaker 2: But here's the.
51:52
Speaker 5: Thing, though, we are producing great because we got to
51:55
Speaker 5: You look at Chicago Bears. I think they played on
51:57
Speaker 5: Monday night. We had two kids from West Virginia on
52:00
Speaker 5: NFL roster.
52:01
Speaker 4: And I'm supporting that. The question is those kids, those
52:05
Speaker 4: two kids, what.
52:07
Speaker 2: Are they doing. Why am I not trying to figure
52:08
Speaker 2: out what they did?
52:09
Speaker 4: They just got the metrics, bro. I don't think it's
52:12
Speaker 4: just the metrics. I don't think it's just the metrics.
52:14
Speaker 4: But here's the thing, though, everybody's not going to make it.
52:16
Speaker 5: If you take the city of Houston, they're not producing
52:19
Speaker 5: like five ten NFL players and they probably triple our population.
52:25
Speaker 5: They're not doing that. So what I'm saying is that
52:28
Speaker 5: is it's a numbers game and we're only going to
52:31
Speaker 5: produce so much. And the ones that we are producing
52:35
Speaker 5: it that's kind of on the line. They're not running trackticism.
52:41
Speaker 4: I agree about the track and the fact that these
52:45
Speaker 4: teams schools don't even have a track team. That's crazy
52:49
Speaker 4: because they don't have anybody coming out. And if i'm
52:51
Speaker 4: if I'm a football coach. I'm making sure my kids
52:54
Speaker 4: are running trying. But my point, though, my point is
52:59
Speaker 4: I think that we have had talented kids who couldn't
53:05
Speaker 4: make it, but they can't even get they can't even
53:09
Speaker 4: get to college because they don't have the work ethic.
53:12
Speaker 5: They don't, you know, because they're not gonna make it anyway.
53:15
Speaker 5: You can go across any city in America and that
53:18
Speaker 5: and that's gonna be the same conversation. You're gonna have
53:20
Speaker 5: them same stories. They're not making it anyway. And I'm saying, like, again,
53:25
Speaker 5: it's a numbers game, because if you have more numbers
53:27
Speaker 5: than you're gonna have the kids who actually have the
53:28
Speaker 5: mindset and in the physical acumen to do it.
53:31
Speaker 2: So are you are you saying that that? Okay?
53:35
Speaker 4: So if if I'm in South Charleston, I'm a junior,
53:40
Speaker 4: I don't have I don't have a picture of a
53:42
Speaker 4: guy necessarily or whatever. I'm in whatever high school, I
53:46
Speaker 4: don't have a I don't have a picture of a
53:48
Speaker 4: guy who I want to be like I want to black.
53:52
Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying all up and down roster and
53:55
Speaker 5: there there in there in the NFL, you know. But
53:58
Speaker 5: my problem is this when people make those sort of comments,
54:01
Speaker 5: I think we have to start to reverse engineers. You
54:04
Speaker 5: have to have the mental acumen. First, we look at
54:08
Speaker 5: the physical oka you have to have admitt they was
54:11
Speaker 5: doing a story on Peyton Manny. Long before he was
54:14
Speaker 5: physically anything he had, he was developing his mental acumen.
54:20
Speaker 5: So if a guy has the mental acumen, then we
54:22
Speaker 5: can assess it, if he has the metric and if
54:25
Speaker 5: he has the ability to make it physically. A lot
54:28
Speaker 5: of some of most kids playing sports that they don't.
54:30
Speaker 5: They're not even they just don't have the mental acumen
54:32
Speaker 5: to make it. And that's okay.
54:36
Speaker 4: But here's here's what bothers me about that is because
54:40
Speaker 4: my belief, Okay, my belief comes from me making it.
54:44
Speaker 2: My belief is that that kid that we don't.
54:47
Speaker 4: See, that we don't understand and we don't like, who
54:51
Speaker 4: we don't give a chance, Why is he or she not?
54:58
Speaker 2: Why won't you work harder for your dream? Don't give in?
55:02
Speaker 5: But that conversation may not be their dream again, even
55:05
Speaker 5: if it is your dream.
55:06
Speaker 2: I'm speaking of, I'm speaking.
55:08
Speaker 4: I'm specifically speaking because I know for a fact there's
55:12
Speaker 4: a ton of kids that see a sport and say,
55:16
Speaker 4: oh I want to be an Olympics' bruh.
55:20
Speaker 2: They just saying that.
55:22
Speaker 5: They're just saying that you've had the physical excuse me,
55:25
Speaker 5: the mental acumen way before anything physical was ever developed.
55:32
Speaker 5: You weren't even starting, as you said, you weren't starting
55:34
Speaker 5: as a phomore, you weren't a superstar, but your mental
55:37
Speaker 5: acumen was there since you're seven years old. So a
55:39
Speaker 5: lot of guys they can play, they can do all
55:41
Speaker 5: the things, but they don't necessarily have a deep rooted
55:45
Speaker 5: belief that they're actually going to do that or they're
55:47
Speaker 5: actually willing to do that.
55:49
Speaker 2: That's only a.
55:50
Speaker 5: Small number of dudes who who Because some dudes, their
55:54
Speaker 5: physical is going to supersede everything and they're going to
55:56
Speaker 5: be able to have that chance regardless. But for most guys,
56:00
Speaker 5: you gotta have the mental acumen and then all the
56:02
Speaker 5: other things will come later if you're able to develop physically.
56:06
Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying. A lot of guys that say
56:08
Speaker 5: they want to make it, man, they ain't want to
56:09
Speaker 5: make it. They bs and they don't want that.
56:11
Speaker 4: See all right, I'm going to I'm going to say
56:14
Speaker 4: this to to for any parents that are listening and
56:19
Speaker 4: and have and has a kid who has any aspirations,
56:22
Speaker 4: whether it's D one, college ball, whether it's the NFL, NBA, whatever, whatever.
56:28
Speaker 7: It is.
56:31
Speaker 2: Playing a game. And I don't care how many games
56:33
Speaker 2: you you know you can. You can.
56:35
Speaker 4: You can play travel sports. You can play fifteen games
56:37
Speaker 4: in a weekend if you want.
56:39
Speaker 2: That is not.
56:40
Speaker 4: Necessarily the ticket. Playing more is not the ticket because
56:46
Speaker 4: it's easy to play. It's harder to work. It's harder
56:50
Speaker 4: to work out. It's harder to get out there and
56:53
Speaker 4: run when it's raining, it's hard to get out there
56:55
Speaker 4: running when it's cold, it's hard to get out there
56:57
Speaker 4: running when it's again.
56:58
Speaker 2: You can't make a ki do that.
57:01
Speaker 5: They have to want that because even if you make them,
57:05
Speaker 5: as soon as they get from under your wing, they're
57:07
Speaker 5: not gonna do it no more.
57:09
Speaker 2: So you have to again.
57:10
Speaker 5: You can instill it in them, and you can try
57:12
Speaker 5: to hope that once you release them they'll do it,
57:15
Speaker 5: but you gotta have it mentally first. See, I see,
57:19
Speaker 5: it's not about work, it's really about mentally. And I'm
57:22
Speaker 5: buying exactly, I'm buying what you're saying. But like, like,
57:26
Speaker 5: like I said, I shared this with my dad. Even
57:29
Speaker 5: though like like, I knew if.
57:31
Speaker 4: I'm not working out, I knew he was gonna ultimately
57:33
Speaker 4: say something like you know you're not you're not running
57:36
Speaker 4: this morning?
57:37
Speaker 2: Make you though he didn't make me. Okay, then, so
57:39
Speaker 2: that's the thing. You making my point. That's what I said.
57:41
Speaker 5: I know, I said, I gotta have a supporting parent. Yeah,
57:45
Speaker 5: that's that's Yeah, it helps to have a supporting parent.
57:48
Speaker 5: But a lot of guys, I mean, let's face it, man,
57:50
Speaker 5: a lot of guys you you the guys who who
57:54
Speaker 5: make it, make it, who are consistently consistent, make it
57:57
Speaker 5: do ten years in there, uh in a in a
58:00
Speaker 5: professional sports they're like you where they they had to
58:03
Speaker 5: support but they had it mentally. There's very few Allen
58:06
Speaker 5: Iverson's who just had just enormous talent that that's that's
58:11
Speaker 5: far and few between who figure out a way to
58:13
Speaker 5: make it based off that. A lot of guys, most
58:15
Speaker 5: guys are just they they want it and they're going
58:18
Speaker 5: forward and they're willing to do it. But a lot
58:20
Speaker 5: of I'm talking about guys who make it, but it's
58:22
Speaker 5: a whole bunch of guys who got the physical ability
58:24
Speaker 5: who just ain't got it mentally and and that, and
58:27
Speaker 5: I think that's where See, that's just hard for me.
58:29
Speaker 5: And I know we've got to go, but that's like
58:31
Speaker 5: it's hard for me, man to think if you could
58:35
Speaker 5: look at yourself in the mirror and say, I got
58:37
Speaker 5: the metrics, you know, I got, I got, I got
58:40
Speaker 5: all the metrics.
58:42
Speaker 2: I just don't understand, like why the you know, why
58:44
Speaker 2: you're not putting that times.
58:45
Speaker 5: They don't want it, they don't want to play, They
58:47
Speaker 5: don't really want it. They say they want, but they don't.
58:50
Speaker 5: And I hold it before we go.
58:51
Speaker 2: I got it.
58:52
Speaker 5: We had a player a w V s U unfortunately
58:55
Speaker 5: what should you say university football program unfortunately passed Jolly Harrington.
58:59
Speaker 5: A very very sad situation. So I just want to
59:02
Speaker 5: send you know, an R I P and just send
59:06
Speaker 5: my deepest scndulence to his family in the community at
59:09
Speaker 5: Westvirginia State University.
59:10
