- 1:28SPEAKER_03: Like, she is not just a naturopath, she is also an acupuncturist and um uh just such wonderful support with people on their journey of fertility and women's health, and just passionate about being able to be the best of themselves.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: So with that.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Ah, yeah, I love it.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: I love just meeting all these people for my podcast.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: So let's share who this amazing lady is, and then we can get into that gorgeous conversation.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: So we have here uh a Dr.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: Juanita Jolly.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: She's a naturopath and also a doctor of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, and the principal practitioner and clinical director of balance complementary medicine.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: Well done, you.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: Oh, you are so welcome.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, geez, that looks like years of study, you know.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: Oh, with over 25 years of experience, Juanita has undertaken further postgraduate studies in Japanese acupuncture, TCM, which is known as traditional Chinese medicine, obstetrics, fertility support, cosmetic acupuncture, cellular health testing, and specialized comprehensive health status screening.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: Oh my goodness, that is awesome.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Juanita has a special interest in hormonal health, fertility for both men and women, fantastic.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Working closely with IVF Clinics, awesome to support patients through their journey to parenthood.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: Wow, I'm so excited to speak to you today.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Great to be here.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: So let's start off.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: So, what got you into this work that you are doing becoming a naturopath and an acupuncturist?
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Well, a personal journey, but um with me getting into fertility, that actually started with my dear, dear friend.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Um, I just finished graduating naturopathy and Chinese medicine and acupuncture, and she found herself in um infertility, and um she kept having recurrent miscarriages.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: She was quite young at the time, quite keen to start a family.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And then I started to research further, and she was actually my first patient.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: So um her boys are now 18 and 16, and she's forever grateful, and I'm forever grateful for being on her journey because it's taught me everything.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: Awesome, and I love that.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: How one person can create so much deep interest, and and I think, as you said before, you know, our clients can be our best teachers, can't they?
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Yep, absolutely, absolutely.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And I got into IVF support.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Um, I was practicing, I started to see quite a lot of fertility patients because I found I was quite good at supporting patients on that journey.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: And um, my first IVF patient was fairly newish to me at the time, came in.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: She was actually in the medical profession herself, had new had numerous IVF attempts um with unfortunately failed transfers.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: And so I did a little bit of extra study.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: She wasn't open to seeing someone like me.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: She was very medical, but she thought she'd give it a go.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And um, I treated her and I supported her.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: The the best thing she got out of it is she felt more relaxed and a real sense of well-being.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And um, I supported her through her journey, and she ended up having twins through IBF.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: So I supporting her, working with her specialist.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So that's another great thing, got me really interested in IVF support.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: Awesome, yes, and it's these, it's meeting these amazing, you know, it's like earth angels, they meet us and they send us on the trajectory.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: So awesome.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: Well done, you, well done you.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: And so, with that, you know, when would you say, especially with clients and working with this, when is the best time if you're on an IVF journey, yeah?
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: See an atropath to start or an acupuncturist?
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Um, I feel sooner, sooner is best.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Um, but I'm happy to work with patients anytime they're ready to come.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Um, some patients choose to come just as they're doing their IVF cycle.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: They might choose to come for acupuncture.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: So they might just use acupuncture to support them through their IVF cycle.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Sometimes their specialists can recommend it.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I love, I love to see patients if they want to work on egg quality and sperm quality.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: It's really great if we can get them in probably about three months before they start their journey.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Because that's that means that if we can sort of work on that, that'll really improve their um egg and sperm quality if there's any issues there.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know what, I'm happy to do it at any stage.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: So um, I guess I'm pretty passionate about it.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: So if I do have them for three months to really support them, hopefully we get better outcomes.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: And they generally get a lot healthier as well.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: But that's not to say if you're on your IVF journey and you want to use acupuncture as part of that journey, that's okay too.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: Well, again, I think the earlier we start the better.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: And I think some of the things I've learned recently, um, because of course now the male fertility aspect is becoming bigger and more knowledge and more well-well, it is, and I've actually been I've been banging on about that for about 27 years.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: And in fact, my first patient, I got her husband to do all the preconception care stuff as well, because it's so just it's so important, and it's starting, they're starting to realize that now.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: It really is becoming to the forefront, which is very, very exciting and and also very needed, let's face that.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, it's a two-person sport, so to speak.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: It really is, yeah.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: Two tango.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: So, um, so good.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: I'm glad to hear about you working on on both sides.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: And so, my my curiosity, did you start off as a naturopath and then add the acupuncturist?
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: What's yeah, well, I suppose it must be really good that you can add both of those aspects.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: It is, yeah, I was a bit nuts actually.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: I did them both at the same time.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Wow, dude.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Um, double degree, but I I kind of finished my acupuncture first and had one more year to go to my naturopathy.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: So I was already practicing as an acupuncturist, but yeah, pretty much did them both at the same time, then went and did more postgraduate study on obstetric acupuncture, IVF support, all that type of thing, Japanese acupuncture.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: So I pretty much just threw myself into it.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: You can yeah, and I kind of can't help, but I do combine both because I can't quite do one without the other, especially with fertility.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: I pretty much just want to do everything I can to help.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, of course.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: And look, once you have that information, of course you bring that into the client.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: So absolutely.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: So, with that, what does treatment involve?
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: What does it look like when people come to see you and what are those benefits?
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: If people are coming initially and they're going to give it a few months to, you know, get their body ready.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Um, it'll involve like some dietary changes, um, really individualized um treatment plans.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: So looking at supplements if need be or herbs, working with their fertility specialist, always working with their specialist.
- 8:51SPEAKER_04: Nice.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Um, so really they'll look at their getting their lifestyle and their health really back on track.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Um, and acupuncture, that'll involve just a little bit of acupuncture, very gentle acupuncture.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: I'm very gentle with the treatment.
- 9:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: And um, that could involve weekly sessions leading up to their IBF.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: So um that's pretty much it.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: But some it depends.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Some patients just come and they're like, look, I just want to do the acupuncture, and that's okay.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: It's with what whatever they're ready, but I'll always try and um suggest positive lifestyle factors as well to change and improve their health and well-being and emotional support as well.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: And look, I I think this is, you know, for me, the fertility journey is the opportunity to do life differently in a healthier way in mind, body, and soul, you know.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: I yeah, I realize that fertility isn't just about being fertile, it's having a fertile mind, the thoughts, the being.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, the the day.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: It's it's everything brings in the the fertility and it it it's it's in all of our being.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And just getting that sense of well-being, that relaxation, that space to heal as well.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's really important.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: And I love hearing that you work with and you know become part of the team with their fertility specialist.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: You know, the more that we could work together, the more it supports the client.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Look, I think it's great, and that's the thing.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: We are a part part of a team, and we do get a lot of fertility specialists refer us patients, which is just wonderful.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Um, and they're supportive of their treatment, and I'm super supportive of their treatment.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: So if I've got a patient and I want to do herbs, I'll always ask if it's okay with the fertility specialist because sometimes we don't want herbs to interfere with specific treatment that they're um getting at the time.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: So I always work with that.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, awesome.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: So if you've got a client there, um, they don't need to be worried about oh my goodness, I can't tell my IVF specialist.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: So actually, it's about look, the more we all work together, yeah, um, the more that it's the benefit for the parent to be, isn't it?
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: And I mean, I think it's important.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: It means the IVF specialist with all their expertise can really focus on that IVF treatment.
- 11:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: And then we can focus on the well-being of the patient, the diet, and the nutritional um prescription if they need it, um, to really support that.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: So we're both playing a part to get the best outcomes.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: It's having your crew around you so that that IVF cycle becomes the most potent possible.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: No, I love it.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: So um what would be, say, the lifestyle and dietary factors that can be made now?
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: So I guess the most important thing, apart from cutting out alcohol and stopping smoking and vaping and all those things that fertility specialists will probably talk to you about, uh-huh, is really just getting a healthy, healthy diet, as many greens as we can, as many good um fats like fish, nuts and seeds, avocado, protein.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Because really, when you're looking at sperm and egg, especially sperm, what sperm made on amino acids, where do we get amino acids?
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Protein.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: So make sure they're getting enough protein.
- 12:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Um, organic where possible, always a little bit tricky, especially if people can't afford it.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: We just want you to eat well.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we just want you to eat lots of veggies, yeah, lots of nourishing food.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: So if you can do that, um, one of the things that I also recommend my fidelity patients have been talking a lot about EDCs like endocrine disturbing chemicals and how that's impacting fertility, you're probably aware of that.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Um, at least, yeah, at least start it's something that I've been talking about for 25 years plus.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: I'm so passionate.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Um at least start drinking out of a, you know, a stainless steel water bottle, a glass water bottle, and reduce plastic as much as what you can.
- 13:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Um, it gets very overwhelming with patients how they're like, oh my gosh, I've got to change all these things.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: It's so hard.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Just one thing's fine.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: You know, just doing what you can is great.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: So stainless steel, plastic, eating well.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: You know, so just starting there because it does get really overwhelming.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:30SPEAKER_03: Is it true um with male health and male sperm health that really that three months is a wonderful portal to change sperm health from being maybe not the best to being absolutely amazing?
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: And I have seen this.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: I've seen this with um sperm analysis, because I will send for a sperm analysis and sperm DNL fragmentation.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: So we can sort of see where more morphology or motility is a bit of an issue here.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: And then making those changes, how that can improve.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: There's just so much that you can do.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: So much.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, that's good.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: Because I I just think it's, you know, now we're realizing how important it is sperm health within, you know, creating um the baby, isn't it?
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, it's really important.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: So important.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: I just I just wish that that more people knew the positive um lifestyle factors that they could do to really improve those outcomes.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: I really feel like it's not spoken about enough.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: It's getting there, but we need to talk about it more.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: And those positive lifestyle factors are what you've just explained, or is there other stuff that you need to share?
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: Because please do share it now, it's a good time.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Um I guess, you know, looking at there's just so many things really, like exercise, you know, making sure that we're at a good weight is really important.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Um, staying away from any chemicals, um, with men opposed to having their laptops and their mobile phones in their pockets to get it away from the nether region because that can really impact sperm health.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Um what else?
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess cleaning chemicals, trying to keep it as close to nature as possible.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, detoxing the house.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, detoxifying the house.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Um, I feel like that stress is a huge factor, I find.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: I know sometimes that's not research, but stress play is a huge factor.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: I feel uh in male fertility, um, a lot of the time men are stressed, they're tired, their testosterone drops because they're overworked.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: And I feel like that that's not talked about enough either.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: No, all good lifestyle factors.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: Thanks for lifestyle factors, yeah, definitely.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: And also something else I wanted to ask you about.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: What is cellular health testing?
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, that yeah, cellular health testing.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: So it's to do with your bioimpedance analysis.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: So that involves um bioimpedance analysis.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: So it's a test that we can do to check body composition really and muscle mass.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Now that can be a really, really good factor, especially when we're doing it among males, to see if they're a low muscle mass, because if they're low muscle mass, they're not producing enough testosterone and that can impact their fertility.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: So it's a test that we do in clinic.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: And for women, we can check to see if they're too underweight.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Often when women are underweight, that can impact their hormones.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it can also just tell us where their body fat percentage is as well.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we obviously don't want you to be overweight, but we also don't want you to be underweight.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: That's something that I do see a lot, you know, underweight women that that really affects their hormones.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah, that's really interesting.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because I suppose you know, we're always trying to lose weight so we can, you know, get the baby.
- 16:57SPEAKER_03: Um, so yeah, you know, it works on all different sides and factors.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, fantastic.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: That's okay.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: What else um is needed to be shared about the work that you do um and supporting people on a fertility journey?
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Um, I just think that the work needs to be shared that um what we do is I guess a bit more specifically tailored to the patient.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: So you know how when you see a lot of these patients that are taking, you know, that are going through IVF or fertility, and they're taking, oh, I'm gonna take NAD, I'm gonna take ubiquino, I'm gonna take this.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's not a one size fits all.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: So what we tend to do is we tend to tailor supplements and treatment for the patient because um sometimes things are over-prescribed and they don't need to be spending money on all these things.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: So I think the most important thing we can do is really simplify it for the patient and make it simple, you know, because they may not need NAD, they may not need this.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: So, you know, so that I think that's where we need to work a little bit more.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: So I see that a lot in clinic, how a lot of people come in and they're taking all these supplements, yeah, and they they're just trying to do everything, but sometimes they don't need all of those supplements.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Sometimes we just need to have just a key amount of supplements and doing it a little bit more through diet and lifestyle.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: So it's being able to take the right things for the right for the right time, depending on where you are in your journey.
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: Awesome.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: Well done, you so where are you within Australia?
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Do you share where you are?
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: So we're in Hyatt in Melbourne, so right near Southland, so the south south of Melbourne.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Not far from Sandringham and not too far from the beach, which is great.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: Oh, so lovely.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: I mean Canberra, everything's far from the beach, so that's quite good.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: So, do you do appointments mainly face to face or face-to-face as well as online?
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love seeing people face to face because it means I can do acupuncture as well.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: But I do have quite a few patients that I see online that can't come into clinics.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: So whatever they can do is great.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: Um, as I said, doing the acupuncture, the sense of well-being that you get from the acupuncture is just fabulous if people can come in and it really can support them through their IVF journey during their treatment, but open to both.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: I do have a lot of patients interstate as well.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: So do buy it Zoom for them.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: Awesome.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: Thank you so much.
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: And how can people find you?
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: Where are you in socials?
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: Website, please do share that.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: So I'm not the greatest when it comes to promoting myself because I've been doing this for a while.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: So it's mainly word of mouth.
- 19:47SPEAKER_04: That's so good.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: We do have Instagram, we do have Facebook, um, we do have a website.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: So www.balancemed.com.au.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Um really, even if anyone just wants to reach out and shoot me an email and have a chat, I'm here to help because really that's what I want to do.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: Ultimately, I just want to help.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Like it's probably one of the most passionate.
