- 1:44Welcome into the arena.
- 1:46This is the Arena of Blaze podcast, and
- 1:48I'm your willing host, Marco Sandoval.
- 1:51I'm joined, as always, by my fellow son
- 1:54of Mutt, Todd Powers.
- 1:56Today, we have the privilege of being joined
- 1:58by Father Kearney.
- 1:59Father Kearney is the priest walking the streets
- 2:02of Wichita, Kansas, and preaching on the devotion
- 2:06of the Holy Face to the Holy Face
- 2:09of Jesus.
- 2:10He's a prolific author.
- 2:12I didn't realize how many books you had
- 2:13written.
- 2:15He's written Walking the Road to God.
- 2:18He's written The Remedy, a book, The Secret
- 2:22of the Holy Face, The Devotion Destined to
- 2:25Save Society, The Consecration to the Holy Face,
- 2:30The Cassock, Meekness, and 365 Days of Reparation.
- 2:37So we'll be talking two of those books
- 2:39we have on display of the shelves.
- 2:41I've read the Holy Face Devotion book, and
- 2:45then I'm in the middle of The Consecration,
- 2:47excellent books.
- 2:49I thought a good place to start today
- 2:51would be the Sacred Heart of Jesus, since
- 2:53it's We were talking about tenderheartedness and hardness
- 2:57of heart.
- 3:00I did a confession at the cathedral, probably
- 3:03within the last year, maybe a year or
- 3:06so ago, and something I had noticed about
- 3:09my heart is that it just felt like
- 3:12a rock that had been fractured.
- 3:15And I felt like the light, if you
- 3:17put a rock in light that's fractured, there's
- 3:20shadows in your heart.
- 3:22And so I took that to confession that
- 3:24there are things in my heart that are
- 3:26deformed and I can't get to them, I
- 3:29can't see them, that are causing me trouble.
- 3:32And the priest, the good priest at the
- 3:34cathedral, he gave me Ezekiel 36, 26.
- 3:38I will give you a new heart and
- 3:40a new spirit I will put within you.
- 3:43I will remove the heart of stone from
- 3:45your flesh and give you a heart of
- 3:48flesh.
- 3:49I just thought that scripture was very impactful
- 3:53to me.
- 3:54I took that to prayer and it's been
- 3:56kind of in my mind.
- 3:58So the question for me would be, men,
- 4:04and when we're looking to build an army
- 4:06of men, what's the importance of the Sacred
- 4:13Heart in that process?
- 4:15Yeah, when I was praying Mass today for
- 4:18the Sacred Heart, before the Gospel, you have
- 4:23a gradual, and I've read this probably a
- 4:27hundred times, but it said, a man's meekness
- 4:33will allow him to find my path.
- 4:36And it just struck me, meekness is one
- 4:40of the two virtues that Jesus wants us
- 4:42to have in the Sacred Heart devotion.
- 4:44He said, be meek and humble of heart
- 4:47like me.
- 4:49And so we usually focus on humility because
- 4:52it's a very important virtue.
- 4:54It's not the most exalted.
- 4:58That's the queen of all virtues, which is
- 5:00charity.
- 5:01But meekness is the gateway to all the
- 5:04other virtues, and virtue means to do a
- 5:06good thing over and over again.
- 5:07So we don't focus on meekness much.
- 5:11But meekness is that virtue where we have
- 5:14righteous anger.
- 5:15We need to, to protect families, to call
- 5:18something out when it's wrong.
- 5:19But sometimes that anger gets inordinate, and that's
- 5:22where meekness curbs that.
- 5:24And so if we want to be spiritual
- 5:27men and women today, there's a lot of
- 5:31people attacking us, and so we need meekness
- 5:34so that when we get too angry, that
- 5:37meekness curbs it, and then we'll know the
- 5:39path to take.
- 5:41And so the path to heaven, Jesus said,
- 5:44is very narrow.
- 5:45But it's easy if we try and focus
- 5:48on the virtues.
- 5:50And so to me, at least, that meekness
- 5:54is key.
- 5:55In fact, I've written a book, which is
- 5:58in my publisher's house right now with Sophia
- 6:03Press, and I think that meekness is going
- 6:06to form the heel of the Blessed Virgin
- 6:10Mary that will crush the serpent and bring
- 6:13about a hastening for the triumph of the
- 6:14Immaculate Heart.
- 6:15So you can never separate the Sacred Heart
- 6:17from the Immaculate Heart in this devotion to
- 6:20the Holy Face.
- 6:21Jesus told that to Sister Maria de St.
- 6:23Pierre.
- 6:24So those are some thoughts.
- 6:26Meekness leads us to the path that Jesus
- 6:28wants us to get on, brings us to
- 6:30heaven.
- 6:31I noticed that you had a book, Meekness,
- 6:34coming out, and that caught my eye.
- 6:35I have a story of meekness.
- 6:37I think meekness is very difficult for men.
- 6:40I remember Father Uroch gave a sermon, and
- 6:44he had mentioned meekness, and I went up
- 6:46to him afterwards and I told him, I
- 6:50hate meekness.
- 6:51I don't want to be meek.
- 6:52Meek is weak.
- 6:53I mean, help me, because I don't under—meekness
- 6:57is difficult for me.
- 6:58And so he was new at the parish,
- 7:02and he said, I got an article, I
- 7:03got a book for you.
- 7:05And he came and he handed me Uroch's
- 7:07copies of some writings of Brother of Agrius,
- 7:12the Desert Fathers.
- 7:13And I thought, man, I'm special, because I
- 7:15have Father Uroch's writings, and he's got notes
- 7:18in the margins.
- 7:20And so I went and read that, and
- 7:22it was very interesting.
- 7:24It just started me on a path of
- 7:26thinking about meekness.
- 7:27I did further study, and I found an
- 7:29article, which it kind of shapes in my
- 7:32mind what meekness truly is.
- 7:34It said, you know, the Romans used to
- 7:38go and find horses, they'd go round up
- 7:40horses, and the most—they would be looking for
- 7:43the most spirited of horses.
- 7:45And so they would round up the horses
- 7:47and they'd separate them, and the most spirited
- 7:49horses would be their war horses, and they
- 7:52would take them to training.
- 7:54Now, they had to be meek, so meek
- 7:56meant basically that they would be bridled and
- 7:59that they would be spirited, they would run
- 8:02into battle with fire coming at them, arrows
- 8:06coming at them, but they had the fortitude
- 8:07and courage to run into battle, but yet
- 8:09they were perfectly docile under the reins of
- 8:13whoever their rider was.
- 8:14Their master.
- 8:15Yeah.
- 8:16That's my problem.
- 8:19I have the ability to be a literal
- 8:26killer, but, you know, winning takes me putting
- 8:29my personal feelings aside.
- 8:31I remember my first wife one day on
- 8:33the way home from Mass asked me if
- 8:35I was happy, that I know it was
- 8:37a loaded question that was leading down a
- 8:39path of, she wasn't happy.
- 8:41My response was, what do you mean am
- 8:44I happy?
- 8:44If I thought about that before I got
- 8:47out of bed every morning, I'd never get
- 8:48out of bed.
- 8:49I have duties, obligations, and responsibilities as a
- 8:52man.
- 8:53I don't think at all about any of
- 8:57that because it keeps me from my goals,
- 9:02goals of Todd Powers.
- 9:05We've talked about this a lot lately, the
- 9:08burning bush, I am who I am.
- 9:10I am existence itself, but when I'm asked
- 9:12to say who I am, I have a
- 9:14name.
- 9:16Why is that?
- 9:19God is not in my heart when I
- 9:21say my name.
- 9:22I feel my ego, my in, my being
- 9:27demands that I put those feelings aside.
- 9:33I don't quite know how to incorporate the
- 9:38sacred heart and the meekness aspect when I
- 9:41feel like my physical and psychological survival over
- 9:44much of my life has trained me to
- 9:47harden the heart, if that makes any sense.
- 9:53So how can we get meekness?
- 9:55One way I like to tell people is
- 9:59pick up your rosary and pray a decade
- 10:01for certain virtues.
- 10:04So maybe a homework project is to pray
- 10:08a decade of the rosary for meekness for
- 10:10a month, starting today.
- 10:13The rosary is a very powerful vehicle of
- 10:16allowing us to have what we need, not
- 10:19what we want, but what God wants us
- 10:21to have.
- 10:22So you may be thinking, well, this rosary
- 10:25is a little different.
- 10:26So I'm going to plug here the Carmelite.
- 10:29This is the Bridgetine rosary.
- 10:31It also is a Carmelite rosary because it
- 10:33has six decades instead of five.
- 10:36And so Martino made it for me in
- 10:39California, and it's got brown and blue, which
- 10:42are the colors of Carmel.
- 10:44So we have a third-order Carmelite here
- 10:47in Wichita that's been around for two years,
- 10:53and we're going to all have a Carmelite
- 10:55rosary.
- 10:56So you may be asking, well, Father, what
- 10:57are the extra decades?
- 10:58Because there's six times three, you know.
- 11:02The old mysteries are given in this.
- 11:05And so for the glorious mystery, the extra
- 11:10decade is the patronage of the Blessed Virgin
- 11:14Mary, Queen and Beauty of Carmel.
- 11:15I love that.
- 11:17And then for the joyful mysteries, the extra
- 11:19decade is the conception of the Blessed Virgin
- 11:23Mary.
- 11:24And then the last one, joyful, so sorrowful,
- 11:30would be the body of Jesus being placed
- 11:32in the arms of the Blessed Virgin Mary
- 11:34at the foot of the cross.
- 11:37So God has given us the means by
- 11:40which we can become tender to the Sacred
- 11:44Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of
- 11:45Mary, and it's the rosary.
- 11:47You told me a story about that rosary
- 11:48that you have.
- 11:50You want to share that with us?
- 11:52So I went to Blessed Sacrament, and in
- 11:55the second grade, I was received first communion
- 12:00with my class.
- 12:00I still have that class picture.
- 12:02And I believe we were all given this
- 12:06rosary by the pastor of Blessed Sacrament, Bishop
- 12:11Father Gerber.
- 12:13And I just happened to keep this, and
- 12:16Pope Paul VI was the pope at the
- 12:19time, and the reason I kept this was
- 12:21because I was enamored with the fact that
- 12:25my priest gave me a rosary that was
- 12:27blessed by a pope who happened to be
- 12:32beatified recently.
- 12:36And I just happened to keep this, and
- 12:38it's one of my most prized possessions.
- 12:42And that's neat you told me that, because
- 12:44I have another story today.
- 12:46I was talking to one of our Carmelites,
- 12:49tertiaries, which is a third order, so a
- 12:53layperson.
- 12:54We were talking about what name I'm going
- 12:56to give her, because I'm going to pray
- 12:57about it and wait for that name to
- 12:59come into my heart.
- 13:00But I needed to know if she had
- 13:02any other names or devotions that could help
- 13:04me.
- 13:05And she said, part of her story was,
- 13:08when I was getting baptized, I'm a convert,
- 13:13I wasn't born as a Catholic, Father Gerber
- 13:15baptized me and said, Therese will be your
- 13:19name.
- 13:19That's a very popular saint.
- 13:20And then she told me this beautiful thing,
- 13:23every day, it seems like every day, she
- 13:26said, I get a rose, either it's a
- 13:30rose comes to me or I see a
- 13:31picture of a rose, and it happens to
- 13:34her every day.
- 13:35It's amazing.
- 13:35So the reason I brought that up is
- 13:38because it's no coincidences that you have a
- 13:42story and I have a story from someone
- 13:43I talked to today that was about Father
- 13:46Gerber before he was consecrated as a bishop.
- 13:49And I told Todd, I haven't heard any
- 13:53stories about Father Gerber for like, I hear
- 13:56them maybe every five years.
- 13:57But today I heard two stories in the
- 14:01middle of the day.
- 14:04So I love stories and people love stories.
- 14:08So I'll stop talking.
- 14:08He was the bishop that introduced stewardship to
- 14:11our diocese.
- 14:12And I was at Capon.
- 14:14My dad came to me in eighth grade
- 14:16and said, where do you want to go
- 14:17to high school?
- 14:17I said, well, I thought I was going
- 14:19to Capon.
- 14:19He said, well, you can go to Southeast
- 14:21because I can't afford to send you to
- 14:23Capon.
- 14:23Well, I was 13, going to be 14.
- 14:26I'm not getting a job.
- 14:28He says to me, they have a yard
- 14:31crew at Capon and you can work for
- 14:33eight hours a day all summer for $3
- 14:35.15 an hour and they will take that
- 14:37money that you earn and apply it to
- 14:39your tuition.
- 14:40That's $900 a summer.
- 14:42And I worked prior to my freshman year,
- 14:46prior to my sophomore year.
- 14:49It was the beginning of my junior year
- 14:51and all of a sudden my dad says,
- 14:53you don't have to work on the yard
- 14:54crew this year because the diocese is changing
- 14:58this.
- 14:58There's no more tuition that you have to
- 15:01pay to attend that high school.
- 15:04And I was on the cutting edge.
- 15:07Now all of a sudden I'm working at
- 15:08Edgemoor Pools, a lifeguard, or I'm framing houses
- 15:11and I get to keep that money.
- 15:13And I wouldn't have been able to educate
- 15:16my five children in Catholic schools.
- 15:19I don't know what would have happened to
- 15:22my kids.
- 15:25They're just soft hearted kids like their dad
- 15:28was until he is hard hearted and they
- 15:31got to go to Catholic school.
- 15:32I have a whole stewardship story I wrote
- 15:35about that.
- 15:36It all started with Bishop Gerber instituting that.
- 15:39Only diocese in the whole entire country that
- 15:42does that.
- 15:45So many places to go with that.
- 15:48I think what Todd brought out is something
- 15:53that men struggle with.
- 15:54That's why I feel like we have been
- 15:58trying to build this Men of Blue Army.
- 16:00It's difficult to get men engaged.
- 16:02I think a lot of it is because
- 16:04of that mindset of, I mean, we're the
- 16:07provider, we're the breadwinner, their time is so
- 16:11valuable.
- 16:12I try to tell men your time is
- 16:13so valuable if you sacrifice one hour of
- 16:15your time to do something with other men
- 16:20for the benefit of other men.
- 16:22We were talking earlier about catching each other's
- 16:26hearts on fire.
- 16:27We have to be in close proximity for
- 16:29that.
- 16:31All the relationships that I have today that
- 16:33I'm close with other men are only with
- 16:36guys I played basketball with.
- 16:38They're only through people that I know under
- 16:41duress, how they're going to be.
- 16:43We sweated, we lived in pain, we had
- 16:47the same coaches.
- 16:49I have a couple friends.
- 16:51They called me in the middle of the
- 16:53night and asked me to bring some lime
- 16:54and a shovel to a field.
- 16:55I wouldn't go.
- 16:57I'm kidding, of course, but you get the
- 17:00idea.
- 17:01This all came about because our home parish
- 17:05had a men's group.
- 17:07We went and I was excited.
- 17:10All they wanted to do was drink.
- 17:13I introduced, I thought, I know that we're
- 17:16not going to have a formal discussion, but
- 17:18can we introduce an informal, like here's a
- 17:20thought.
- 17:21What are you men doing with your kids?
- 17:24What's your biggest struggle as a Catholic man
- 17:27in your daily life?
- 17:29I was immediately shut down.
- 17:31Oh, we're not doing any of that.
- 17:33I was like, he noticed I immediately took
- 17:37myself out of it.
- 17:37I was like, no.
- 17:39If I want to go with other men,
- 17:41I can go to a bar and sit
- 17:42at the end of the bar and we
- 17:44can talk.
- 17:45This is ridiculous to me.
- 17:47I don't even understand what we're doing here.
- 17:49This is an opportunity for people to share
- 17:52details of their life to help each other.
- 17:56That's how that works.
- 17:58Not to socialize.
- 18:00And we have an opportunity to fight, like
- 18:04you said, and be under duress because we're
- 18:06in a spiritual war.
- 18:07And so I've always tried to help men
- 18:11that were athletes to transfer that drive into
- 18:16the drive of being the best Catholic we
- 18:20can be, the best adorer of Jesus Christ
- 18:23and the blessed venerator of our Blessed Virgin
- 18:25Mary and the saints.
- 18:26And so we have this procession that we've
- 18:30been doing for about six months now and
- 18:32chanting the rosary in Latin, starting at Seneca
- 18:37Park in the heart of Wichita, Delano District,
- 18:40and walking across the river on the bridge
- 18:43on Douglas to Master Park, where the old
- 18:47Eaton Hotel is.
- 18:48And the reason why we have this candle
- 18:51burning is because I love show and tell.
- 18:54And we haven't used this banner yet.
- 19:00And I had a lady in Lincoln, Nebraska,
- 19:04who's been working on it for months now.
- 19:07And it's the most beautiful thing.
- 19:08We're going to put it on a pole,
- 19:09but I want to display it.
- 19:10Is that OK?
- 19:11Absolutely.
- 19:28So I said, make something unique.
- 19:33And she did that.
- 19:36She said, this has like a curtain.
- 19:46And you take these strings and you just
- 19:52tie it around.
- 19:55It opens up.
- 20:00Because this is a copy of the Vow
- 20:04of Aaronica.
- 20:05Underneath, we had a local print shop here
- 20:11in Wichita print this on linen.
- 20:16And then we had the help of Cardinal
- 20:18Burke write a letter to the cardinal who
- 20:25was in charge of St. Peter's Basilica.
- 20:27And we had 200 of these taken there
- 20:29by a few cannons who had to go
- 20:32through a few codes to the Swiss Guard
- 20:34to get in.
- 20:34And I wasn't allowed to be there because
- 20:36the Vow of Aaronica in Rome is such
- 20:40top secret security.
- 20:43And they touched each one of these to
- 20:45that.
- 20:46And so she put this on here.
- 20:49And so men can come and chant the
- 20:54rosary and do something beautiful because in true
- 20:57devotion, we talk about being totally consecrated to
- 21:01Jesus through Mary.
- 21:03And St. Louis de Montfort wrote about true
- 21:07devotion to Mary.
- 21:09And he said about the saints in the
- 21:11latter times will carry a crucifix in their
- 21:15right hand, a rosary in their left.
- 21:19And I can't do that because I got
- 21:20to hold this up with my left hand.
- 21:23Todd's going to help me.
- 21:23So and then he said.
- 21:30And they will carry a bloody standard.
- 21:33And I really never paid attention to that.
- 21:35And then I've known these this passage for
- 21:39like 10 years.
- 21:40And then I started to think, what's that
- 21:42bloody standard?
- 21:43And I think at least for me, this
- 21:46is a bloody standard of the face of
- 21:47Jesus.
- 21:48And when the Bell of Veronica was in
- 21:52Rome, which it is now, it was used
- 21:56to consecrate the Pantheon, which is a pagan
- 22:01circle church.
- 22:03It was nicknamed the Rotunda.
- 22:05And one of the popes in the 7th
- 22:08century took the bell out from the catacombs
- 22:11and wagon loads of relics from the catacombs.
- 22:16They were the martyrs of the Colosseum.
- 22:18And he decorated this church with this veil.
- 22:21And that church was consecrated on May the
- 22:2413th, around 610.
- 22:27And each year on the anniversary of that
- 22:30dedication, they took the veil out in procession
- 22:34to beg the Lord to stop the revolutionary
- 22:37men like the nuns to come and attack
- 22:39Rome.
- 22:40And so we have the world attacking Jesus
- 22:43right now.
- 22:43The church, us Catholics, some of them are
- 22:47getting martyred over in the Middle East.
- 22:52And so when there's this evil sin going
- 22:55on publicly in the world, we need to
- 22:56make public reparations.
- 22:58So this is for men to rise up
- 23:00and to carry this standard.
- 23:03Because I can't only carry the cross and
- 23:06the rosary because I'm trying to chant.
- 23:08So I need men to come and carry
- 23:09this.
- 23:09And so we're looking for strong men to
- 23:12carry this for us.
- 23:15So what do you all think of that?
- 23:17Bravo, Father.
- 23:19I love it.
- 23:20I can just speak from experience of carrying
- 23:23that in a procession.
- 23:24And the first time I did that was
- 23:26the Saturday preceding Easter.
- 23:30And I just remember thinking at one point
- 23:33it hit me.
- 23:33I started to sweat.
- 23:34My arms started to get a little tired.
- 23:37I was giving something to hold the face
- 23:41of Jesus up.
- 23:42And it was just my heart was getting
- 23:44tilled like a field.
- 23:46And I just remember thinking, wow, I'm actually
- 23:50working and sweating as Jesus was sweating on
- 23:55his way of the cross.
- 23:56Like I envisioned myself as like Simon Sarinian
- 24:00there helping him carry the cross.
- 24:02And it just really had a strong impact.
- 24:05And now I can't miss it because I
- 24:07just love going so much.
- 24:08I almost started crying just looking at it,
- 24:11just the unworthiness that I feel when I
- 24:15really think about myself.
- 24:18You know, I go to face-to-face
- 24:20confession for a reason because one day I'm
- 24:23going to be judged by Christ face-to
- 24:25-face and he's already going to know me.
- 24:27Why would I hide behind a screen to
- 24:32talk about my evil doings?
- 24:35And it helps me a lot in the
- 24:37dark depths of temptation.
- 24:40You're going to sit in front of another
- 24:41man.
- 24:42You're going to look him in the eye
- 24:44because I like to have that.
- 24:47And you're going to tell him you did
- 24:49this.
- 24:50And if I do that sin after thinking
- 24:54that thought, for those that don't know, that's
- 24:59one thing.
- 25:00For those that know and yet do it
- 25:03anyways, there's that.
- 25:06And I don't want to be that person.
- 25:09Well, my dream is that men like you
- 25:11will come on this procession.
- 25:14We're averaging about 25 people once a month.
- 25:18What is it, on the second Saturday of
- 25:20the month?
- 25:21That's correct.
- 25:21Yeah, we plan on being there tomorrow.
- 25:22At 10, 15, we meet at Seneca Park,
- 25:26and then we march down to Eaton Hotel,
- 25:30and then there's the queue line.
- 25:31It's free.
- 25:32You park your car at Seneca Park.
- 25:34You can come back.
- 25:34But my dream is that we have about
- 25:37500 men marching through the streets where we're
- 25:40required to get a permit from the police
- 25:42department every month because that's what Catholic men
- 25:47used to do in Christendom is they would
- 25:50stand up and defend the rights of Jesus
- 25:52Christ.
- 25:53And so that's what we're about right here.
- 25:56So I'm hoping that more and more men
- 25:59will come out, and the women will come
- 26:00when the men come.
- 26:02And so this is a call for men
- 26:07to rise up.
- 26:08Don't be afraid.
- 26:11St. John Paul II said we need to
- 26:13go out into the streets and don't be
- 26:15afraid to bring Jesus out there with us.
- 26:17And so if you all want to come,
- 26:20I know you two are coming.
- 26:21You're going to have a priest there, and
- 26:23you're going to have some other people that
- 26:24have been coming.
- 26:26And maybe it can become a good habit
- 26:28for parts of the Catholic Church here in
- 26:31Wichita because when people blaspheme or they don't
- 26:38respect God on his day of rest, he's
- 26:43offended by that.
- 26:43And so we need to make public reparations
- 26:45so that souls that would be going into
- 26:48sin actually have the grace.
- 26:50God can put that grace in their hearts
- 26:52because we're going out and sweating.
- 26:54And tell me, wearing this cassock out there
- 26:57and you talking about carrying the banner, it's
- 26:59sweating.
- 27:00People are looking at us.
- 27:02You can kind of get mindful of being
- 27:04a witness, but we're fighting against those spirits
- 27:07that they don't want us to be out
- 27:10there, the evil ones.
- 27:12And so that's becoming courageous.
- 27:14And all the other virtues are at work
- 27:16here.
- 27:16So I don't know what you all think
- 27:18about that.
- 27:19Well, I love that you brought up the
- 27:20rosary, and Todd keeps talking about the burning
- 27:25bush, and I am who I am, and
- 27:27it makes me think of that whole situation.
- 27:31You know, Mary's been so important to me.
- 27:34My wife witnessed that to me, and she
- 27:36became Catholic when we got married.
- 27:39And for a year, she was praying the
- 27:42rosary for me, and she would tell me
- 27:43she was praying the rosary for me.
- 27:45And I've been a Catholic since I'm five
- 27:48years old, knew about the rosary.
- 27:50It's always something that's in our mind, but
- 27:52I never practiced it.
- 27:53And so I thought, if my converted wife
- 27:57can pray the rosary for me, then surely
- 28:00I can pray the rosary for her.
- 28:01So then I picked up the rosary and
- 28:03started praying it, and it definitely has this
- 28:06type of effect.
- 28:07But more to back to the burning bush,
- 28:09I'm curious, because it's a bush that's ablaze,
- 28:14but it's not being consumed.
- 28:16I've heard it said that's an image of
- 28:19the Blessed Virgin Mary.
- 28:21God's voice is emanating from the bush.
- 28:25Moses, a murderer, God tells him to remove
- 28:31his sandals, so he's close to the earth.
- 28:33He's humble.
- 28:35It's in humility that he approaches, and it's
- 28:38almost like a confession.
- 28:39You're talking about confession.
- 28:41It brings those visions to mind.
- 28:44It's intimate.
- 28:46God knows him and knows what he's done.
- 28:48It's an intimate conversation.
- 28:49So I'm just curious what your thoughts are
- 28:52on that.
- 28:54As we have this conversation, I'm always thinking
- 28:56about how to get men engaged and how
- 29:00to bring the barriers down to really catch.
- 29:05The barriers need to come up.
- 29:07Fissures of man.
- 29:08Barriers need to be higher.
- 29:11The world is so soft.
- 29:13That's why more young people are converting to
- 29:17Catholicism in Eastern Orthodox churches.
- 29:19They're discerning because they want to do hard
- 29:23things.
- 29:25It's almost impossible for me to walk.
- 29:28I'm two blocks behind you guys in this,
- 29:30and I'm offering up.
- 29:32It's not real suffering.
- 29:34It hurts.
- 29:34I just can't do it.
- 29:37But I'm praying in my own time, offering
- 29:41up my prayers, hoping that I can make
- 29:44it another few steps.
- 29:46I don't think we need to lower the
- 29:48barriers.
- 29:49I think people need to be called, suck
- 29:51it up, buttercup.
- 29:54Let's go.
- 29:56Yeah, because Father Ripker talks about it all
- 29:58the time, is we need to find discipline
- 30:00again.
- 30:00Yes.
- 30:01When my father was born in 1948, he
- 30:05was raised by the men who had fought
- 30:08in World War II, and they were taught
- 30:10how to be soldiers.
- 30:11And so there were some beauties about growing
- 30:14up in the 50s that we've lost.
- 30:17There was a culture of Catholicism that Blessed
- 30:21Elect Archbishop Fulton Sheen would talk about.
- 30:24So I think we can lower the bars
- 30:27by getting the men in, by praying for
- 30:29them so that they can suck it up
- 30:30and come to a disciplined prayer activity.
- 30:34And then the men, I hope, will be
- 30:37inspired to say, wait a minute, this is
- 30:39authentic.
- 30:40I can't find many authentic things in my
- 30:42life anymore, except for going to confession and
- 30:44going to Mass.
- 30:46But I need to do more of this.
- 30:47This is something that's in the public square.
- 30:49And one part that I like about it
- 30:52is there's the protesters that are in the
- 30:55city.
- 30:56When we walk on Douglas around Broadway or
- 30:59Main Street, they're doing their stuff.
- 31:02And then when they see us, some of
- 31:04them are curious.
- 31:05Some of them are deferential.
- 31:07Yeah, and they want to know what we're
- 31:08doing.
- 31:09One man took his hat off.
- 31:11They know.
- 31:12Yeah.
- 31:13They know.
- 31:14And now we're going to have this image.
- 31:16I mean, that's just something that you give
- 31:19to a king.
- 31:20That's the royal colors and the tassels.
- 31:23And as St. Teresa of Avila would call
- 31:27him, she called him all the time, His
- 31:29Majesty.
- 31:30That's for a king.
- 31:31And he is Christ the king.
- 31:33And so let's get the world back.
- 31:35Let's make this world a Catholic cultural world
- 31:39where Christ will reign as king.
- 31:43And the popes from 1850s to about the
- 31:461950s talked about the social reign of Jesus
- 31:49Christ and the devotion that Jesus gave to
- 31:51us way before that before his social reign
- 31:53was what?
- 31:55You got it right there on your notes,
- 31:56right on the top.
- 31:57What is it?
- 31:58Sacred heart of Jesus.
- 31:59That's right.
- 32:01On this feast day, may he become our
- 32:04king in our hearts and in the world,
- 32:07not just in our hearts, but in the
- 32:08world.
- 32:09And so we have an opportunity to defend
- 32:13him and to make reparation for the blasphemies
- 32:17against him.
- 32:20So you say this is the devotion that's
- 32:22destined to save society.
- 32:24And I think there are a lot of
- 32:26men out there that have angst and are
- 32:31just frustrated to the point of you can
- 32:35talk about politics, people vote a certain way
- 32:39and they expect a certain result and then
- 32:40when they don't get it, just different things
- 32:44going on in the world.
- 32:45I think there are a lot of men
- 32:47who are very frustrated.
- 32:48You hear people talking about we need to
- 32:50have a civil war, we need this or
- 32:52that.
- 32:53So I'm just curious your perspective on why
- 32:57this devotion is destined to save society.
- 33:00Yeah, so when Pope Pius IX was attacked
- 33:09twice by the Freemasons, they tried to take
- 33:12his life because the prime minister of Italy
- 33:15was killed in cold blood by these guys,
- 33:18these Freemasons.
- 33:20And he exiled himself to Gaeta to preserve
- 33:23his life and he commanded all the churches
- 33:25of Rome to do public reparation.
- 33:30And that's when the Veil of Veronica was
- 33:32put out in 1849.
- 33:34This is when it all happened.
- 33:36And the veil started to have a miracle.
- 33:39There was like a movie picture.
- 33:41Before we had movie pictures, the veil was
- 33:44actually moving around.
- 33:45There was a glow coming as if there
- 33:48was a light behind it, but there wasn't.
- 33:49And the Vatican notary certified what he saw.
- 33:52They rang the bells and the Romans came
- 33:54and saw this miracle for three hours and
- 33:56were gasping, oh, wow.
- 33:58And blessed Pius IX said, reparation is destined
- 34:02to save society.
- 34:04And society has gone downhill ever since then
- 34:07and before then, starting with the French Revolution
- 34:10and even before that.
- 34:12But reparation is destined to save society.
- 34:14And this devotion is all about reparation.
- 34:17It was given to us by Jesus Christ.
- 34:19It was approved by the Archbishop in Tours.
- 34:21And this is a remedy and a blueprint
- 34:24to stop the World Revolution.
- 34:27And so we have the playbook right here
- 34:29that is contingent on us men getting out
- 34:34into the public square and defending the name
- 34:37of God with official prayers.
- 34:38Praying the Rosary will be prayed, chanted in
- 34:43Latin.
- 34:44And the Chaplet of the Holy Face, we're
- 34:47going to pray it in the sacred language
- 34:49of Latin too.
- 34:50And so I have one more thing show
- 34:51and tell before I close my mouth here.
- 34:56But this is a little chaplet of the
- 34:58Holy Face.
- 34:59And it has sextets.
- 35:01So there's six decades instead of decades, it's
- 35:05sextets.
- 35:06So there's six beats between the big ones.
- 35:07And so basically the Chaplet of the Holy
- 35:10Face is for the triumph of the Catholic
- 35:15Church.
- 35:16The Sacred Heart is for the triumph of
- 35:20the Sacred Heart and for the social reign
- 35:23of Jesus Christ.
- 35:24And the triumph of the Immaculate Heart is
- 35:26something Our Lady Fatima predicted would happen eventually.
- 35:29So we have the three triumphs converging into
- 35:31this devotion.
- 35:32And so this devotion makes reparation for the
- 35:36five senses of Jesus Christ.
- 35:39And it prays a prayer from Psalm 67,
- 35:44verse 2.
- 35:46Arise, O Lord, and let the enemies you
- 35:48defeated and let all that hate thee flee
- 35:50from before thy face.
- 35:52And so St. John Christendom was exercising a
- 35:56demon.
- 35:57And the Ergomen, as we call the demon,
- 36:00the possessed person, under obedience, tell me what
- 36:04scripture do you hate the most?
- 36:06And the demon said, Psalm 67, verse 2,
- 36:08that one.
- 36:09Arise, O Lord, and let the enemies be
- 36:12defeated and let all that hate thee flee
- 36:13from before thy face.
- 36:14So we're going to chant that in Latin.
- 36:17It's like a minor exorcism for lay people
- 36:20because the minor exorcism that was written by
- 36:22Pope Leo XIII has that Psalm verse in
- 36:25it too.
- 36:26Psalm 67, verse 2.
- 36:27So when a priest is diagnosing someone to
- 36:31see if they have oppression, obsession, or possession,
- 36:35they will pray that prayer.
- 36:37And it's no coincidence that Psalm 67 was
- 36:40used in that.
- 36:41So this is a powerful weapon that comes
- 36:44from the manual of the Archconfraternity of the
- 36:47Holy Face.
- 36:47We have the playbook here.
- 36:49You know how in football or coaching basketball
- 36:53you have a playbook?
- 36:54Well, this is ours, men.
- 36:55This is ours.
- 37:00So just a word on, you know, these
- 37:05days God doesn't want death of the sinner.
- 37:08He wants conversion of sinners.
- 37:10And I know you've mentioned, I believe it's
- 37:12in Leviticus, where it talks about the scripture
- 37:18about one praying for sinners.
- 37:23It's an exponential.
- 37:24Yeah, so it's Leviticus 26.
- 37:27I think it's verse 8.
- 37:31The Holy Written Word of God basically says
- 37:34this.
- 37:34I'm just going to paraphrase.
- 37:36Five of you will pursue a hundred.
- 37:39A hundred of you will pursue ten thousand.
- 37:44Your enemies will fall by the edge of
- 37:45the sword.
- 37:46Okay?
- 37:47That's the Old Testament.
- 37:49In the New Testament, this devotion, we don't
- 37:51want the death of the sinner, Jesus says,
- 37:52but their conversion.
- 37:54And so let's go to the numbers.
- 37:55Five pursue a hundred.
- 37:57What's the common denominator?
- 37:58Five.
- 37:59You got one to 20 odds when you
- 38:00divide both of those numbers by five.
- 38:03And then you got a hundred and ten
- 38:06thousand.
- 38:06What's the common denominator there?
- 38:07A hundred.
- 38:08And then you divide those all by a
- 38:10hundred.
- 38:10You got one to 100.
- 38:11So what happened?
- 38:12You got one to 20 odds goes to
- 38:13one to 100 odds.
- 38:14You have exponential growth.
- 38:17And so the Blessed Virgin Mary also in
- 38:19the devotion to the Holy Face talks about
- 38:21exponential growth too.
- 38:23And so what does that look like?
- 38:24Take a hockey stick.
- 38:26The top of the blade is flat, but
- 38:27when you get to the handle, it will
- 38:29spike up.
- 38:30And so at the beginning, there's going to
- 38:31be a few men that will fight.
- 38:34But as more and more come, more and
- 38:36more men will be inspired because of the
- 38:37prayers of those first men.
- 38:39So what's the key here?
- 38:40Get in now while the blade is still
- 38:44flat because you'll get merit for all those
- 38:46men that come in later.
- 38:47So my goal is to get a million
- 38:50people to sign up into this confraternity.
- 38:54There's six conditions we talked about in an
- 38:56earlier episode.
- 38:58And so we don't want the death of
- 39:00the sinner, but his conversion.
- 39:03So the sport here is there's many souls
- 39:05going to hell.
- 39:07And so if we can rise up and
- 39:10give this devotion some thought and discernment and
- 39:13live it and pray it, we can help
- 39:16turn those men around from going head over
- 39:19heels into hell.
- 39:20Like Our Lady Fatima said, they're falling in
- 39:21hell like snowflakes.
- 39:24She said, pray the rosary for poor sinners
- 39:27because there's no one to pray for them.
- 39:28And then we have this devotion too.
- 39:30And so we have the combination of Marian
- 39:32devotion and devotion to the Sacred Heart of
- 39:34Jesus and the Holy Face of Jesus.
- 39:37They're powerful.
- 39:40And I have miles to go before I
- 39:42sleep.
- 39:43Miles to go before I sleep.
- 39:45There's a couple of things you've said recently
- 39:47that have really been excellent for me.
- 39:50I have been praying for a long time,
- 39:54teach me how to pray for my enemies.
- 39:57I have enemies that I am trying to
- 40:01love, trying to forgive, trying to pray for.
- 40:05And I've been praying that prayer for a
- 40:07while.
- 40:07And recently I've heard a couple of things
- 40:09that you've said.
- 40:11One is if it were not for the
- 40:14prayers of the Blessed Mother, we wouldn't have
- 40:16a St. Peter.
- 40:17And if it wasn't the prayers of St.
- 40:21Stephen, we wouldn't have a St. Paul.
- 40:23Those things have really touched my heart, given
- 40:27me new fertile things to pray over.
- 40:30And when it comes to these reparation prayers,
- 40:35it's kind of given me a new mindset
- 40:36as far as how valuable your prayers are
- 40:41for others as really as a way of
- 40:44growing this army.
- 40:45Jesus called us to love as he loves,
- 40:49and he forgave his enemies from the cross.
- 40:51What did he say?
- 40:54Father, forgive them for they know not what
- 40:55they do.
- 40:57And so whenever we're tempted to be reminded
- 41:03of past hurts, we can either get better
- 41:08or bitter.
- 41:10Archbishop Sheen used to say that.
- 41:12And so how do we overcome that bitterness?
- 41:15Asking in the rosary for meekness.
- 41:20And so when we ask for that meekness
- 41:21and that temptation comes, that is a bell
- 41:25to say we need to pray for our
- 41:26enemies.
- 41:27And Jesus told us those who pray for
- 41:30the enemies, that's a sign they're going deep
- 41:32into the interior life.
- 41:33I mean, he didn't say it exactly like
- 41:35that, but that's basically the point.
- 41:36And so this is spiritual 101.
- 41:42Spirituality is every temptation can be transformed into
- 41:46a prayer, and that's the temptation that we
- 41:50would have fallen into becomes the virtue that
- 41:52we grow in instead.
- 41:53And so it's a beautiful thing to be
- 41:55part of the church militant and think like
- 41:57that instead of just getting bogged down in
- 41:59our sins, which brings about despair and hopelessness.
- 42:04But to have a prayer for our enemies
- 42:07that they convert, that's a beautiful thing, and
- 42:10I'm challenging that every day because I have
- 42:13enemies too as a priest.
- 42:16But when they do bad things, that's an
- 42:18opportunity for us not only to pray for
- 42:21their conversion, but God gives us great merit
- 42:23when we overcome those temptations and we get
- 42:26stronger, and that's what virtue is, doing a
- 42:28good thing over and over again.
- 42:29And it comes from the root word virtus,
- 42:34means strong, and vir in Latin means man.
- 42:39So men, man up, become virtuous, and that's
- 42:45what you guys are here for.
- 42:46You're spending an hour of your time to
- 42:49reach people out there, especially some men.
- 42:53Maybe you can tell me more about the
- 42:55Blue Army and what your goals are because
- 42:57I haven't heard much of it, but I
- 43:00love what you're doing here.
- 43:01It's nice to have this opportunity in my
- 43:04hometown where I was born and raised.
- 43:08Yeah, the Blue Army men.
- 43:10It's just a comes from Our Lady of
- 43:13Fatima, so this will be part of my
- 43:16kerygma that we do, but it's really the
- 43:20school of Mary, total consecration to Mary.
- 43:25One of the first fruits of that for
- 43:27me was all the apparitions.
- 43:28I had never thought much about the apparitions
- 43:31of Mary.
- 43:31I mean, familiar with Our Lady of Guadalupe,
- 43:33of course, being in the Americas, but really
- 43:37reading those accounts and focusing on the words
- 43:41that were spoken in those accounts, it's amazing.
- 43:45And so Our Lady of Fatima really captured
- 43:48my imagination, and so I had talked earlier
- 43:52about during COVID when I was trying to
- 43:54transition and make my life more intentional, doing
- 43:57the true and good always, even when it
- 44:00wasn't easy, and I first decided to turn
- 44:03my softball team into something different that was
- 44:07faith-focused.
- 44:08I went out there and was like, okay,
- 44:09Our Lady of Fatima, what am I?
- 44:11I thought about being a militia immaculata was
- 44:14very interesting to me at that time, another
- 44:16military-type thing, but the Blue Army apostolate
- 44:21kind of struck me, and so it was
- 44:25not really an active thing, so I kind
- 44:26of took that name, and really to me
- 44:30very succinctly what it is is I feel
- 44:35like it's on my heart to try and
- 44:39fish and gather as many men as I
- 44:41can and bring them to the foot of
- 44:45the total consecration to Jesus through the Immaculate
- 44:47Heart and let Mary do the rest.
- 44:49And I think, I believe that Mary is
- 44:53the key and the path to taking men,
- 44:57piercing their hearts, and bringing them on the
- 44:59way to the Sacred Heart and the Holy
- 45:01Face devotion and the Carmelite way even.
- 45:04Let me sum that up because you overthink
- 45:06things.
- 45:08I'm the engineer of the group.
- 45:10I'm 58.
- 45:11I've never been 58.
- 45:12I don't know what I'm doing.
- 45:14I'm making my life up as I go.
- 45:16I live my life for most of my
- 45:18life spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally, intellectually in a
- 45:22vacuum.
- 45:24Only things that I get, it's so homogeneous
- 45:29that my draw to this is I feel
- 45:36your words imprinted upon my heart because you're
- 45:39so different than me, and I never get
- 45:43fed this.
- 45:45I'm being fed.
- 45:47When we're around young men that are fighting
- 45:49temptation, okay, when I was young, everybody was
- 45:53doing what I was doing, and that was
- 45:56nobody was telling me, don't go have sex
- 45:58with that girl.
- 45:59Don't go to that keg party.
- 46:00We were all doing those sort of things.
- 46:04Therefore, I never received the graces by denying
- 46:07myself the temptation.
- 46:08As an old man, my sex drive has
- 46:10gone down.
- 46:11It's very rare that I find my wife's
- 46:14in Rome.
- 46:15Why when my wife travels do I feel
- 46:17a desire for her?
- 46:19Well, because there's temptation afoot.
- 46:23It's not like it was when I was
- 46:2518, 20, 25, but these young men don't
- 46:29understand there are so many more graces in
- 46:31the thick of mind-numbing sin, the denial
- 46:38of that, the embracing of God's will over
- 46:42mine.
- 46:43There's so many graces, and I want to
- 46:45impart upon them, and we have a couple
- 46:47young men that come and talk about their
- 46:49lives, and I want to say, please, please,
- 46:53please just think about these things.
- 46:58Deny yourself this.
- 47:00There's power.
- 47:01There's power for you in this that you
- 47:03receive from our Lord.
- 47:07Nobody ever communicated that to me at all.
- 47:13So I tell my kids, I've been 20.
- 47:16I know how to be 20.
- 47:17I've been 30.
- 47:18I know how to be 30.
- 47:19I'm not saying it's easy, but I have
- 47:20some answers.
- 47:22But when I get up in the morning,
- 47:24and I've been married twice, and I'm the
- 47:26common denominator, the difference is the one woman
- 47:29I'm married to now is a bit older,
- 47:30much more mature, much more long in her
- 47:33faith, and is much more willing to deal
- 47:35with me than the other one.
- 47:37But I am the common denominator.
- 47:39I still bring to the table the same
- 47:41problems, the same sins, the same, and most,
- 47:44when I go to confession, most of my
- 47:46sins are towards my wife, because she's the
- 47:50closest person towards me.
- 47:52She's the closest person to me of all
- 47:55the things in the world.
- 47:57My reason for wanting to discuss this with
- 48:00other men is I live that life in
- 48:03a vacuum.
- 48:04I made it up as I went.
- 48:07I have no idea what I was doing.
- 48:09There's got to be a better way.
- 48:11Our Catholic parishes, we show up, we go
- 48:13to Mass, we leave, we fight in the
- 48:16parking lot, we flip somebody off for cutting
- 48:18us off right after receiving the Eucharist.
- 48:20I've done it.
- 48:21I've seen it happen.
- 48:25There's got to be a better way.
- 48:27There's got to be a better way to
- 48:28bring men together where they're not saying, hey,
- 48:30wife, I'm going to go on Thursday night,
- 48:32and it's an excuse for me to get
- 48:34a solid buzz on, with, oh, I'm going
- 48:38to the church.
- 48:40I'm in recovery.
- 48:43I know how this works.
- 48:45What a great opportunity, if you're a drinker,
- 48:48to do that.
- 48:51Words made for so much more.
- 48:54You read the accounts of the saints and
- 48:56all that they did in such short lives
- 48:59and how they were doing so much more
- 49:02in their 30s and 20s, and it's because
- 49:06this world just beckons us into such a
- 49:08low grade.
- 49:09Like as you were saying, we need to
- 49:11raise the stakes.
- 49:14The pathway to destruction is so easy and
- 49:17smooth, and it's like, young man, you were
- 49:20made for so much more than this.
- 49:22Do hard stuff.
- 49:23Suck it up.
- 49:25I wish somebody would have told me that.
- 49:27I had a coach that picked me out
- 49:29of a crowd.
- 49:31A man picked me out of a crowd,
- 49:32not because I could play basketball, but he
- 49:34saw that I had a spirit about me
- 49:36that I could compete, and he developed that.
- 49:40And I was a good basketball player that
- 49:42put myself through college on a scholarship, but
- 49:45my life had nothing to do with that.
- 49:47He taught me.
- 49:48He developed that competitive nature, and that is,
- 49:53we don't have that in our world anymore.
- 49:55You brought up something recently that there are
- 49:59different levels to heaven, and I didn't know
- 50:03this, and you can be closer to the
- 50:05Lord or you can be far away from
- 50:07the Lord, and after walking away from that
- 50:09conversation, I thought I'll just be lucky to
- 50:11get in.
- 50:11If they just give me a seat inside,
- 50:14I'll be happy.
- 50:16It never occurred to me that there's levels
- 50:20to this, and I just want to be
- 50:23part.
- 50:25I've almost died many times in my life,
- 50:28and for whatever reason God's keeping me around,
- 50:31I don't want to be on my deathbed,
- 50:33dying of an ingrown toenail.
- 50:35Nothing glorious, something simple, and not have tried
- 50:40to participate in the lives of those around
- 50:42me.
- 50:42That's all.
- 50:45Perfect.
- 50:46Yeah.
- 50:46I would just like to give a blessing,
- 50:48everybody.
- 50:49Please.
- 51:12Amen.
- 51:13Amen.
- 51:15Thank you, Father.
- 51:16Wonderful.
