- 0:15Hello, welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast episode 34.
- 0:19I'm joined as always by Owen Smith in his usual surroundings
- 0:25of outside of Dublin Island on a Sunday morning Pretty long run.
- 0:29How you doing, Owen? Doing well, No, no dressing
- 0:34going on today. I'll just have a woolly hoodie
- 0:36because yeah, it's it's definitely getting colder now.
- 0:39It's like 6-7 degrees. So the sun is starting to come
- 0:43up. It's getting a bit brighter
- 0:44outside. But no, I'm good.
- 0:46I'll be out race week next week. So I've I've a lot easier.
- 0:50I feel like in my head like I just had to get to after this
- 0:54long run and then like it's downhill.
- 0:58Just try not get sick. But yeah, I'm excited to race
- 1:01next week. I'm grateful, and I'm sure the
- 1:04listeners are too, that you keep getting up on a Sunday morning
- 1:08at 6:00 AM to ensure that you're getting these recordings in.
- 1:12So I get up early anyway so it probably suits me better and I
- 1:15prefer dinner early Then I like middle of the day for me because
- 1:18normally there's something on on a Sunday.
- 1:20But Nah. I do I do anything for this
- 1:23podcast to keep it going. No good.
- 1:26And we've also got the Menzies dialing in from the unfamiliar
- 1:29location of he's ventured over east and we've finally got on
- 1:34the line. Yeah, a bit of a shaky
- 1:36connection and a bit of a shaky start, but glad to be here and
- 1:40do what we can to to keep the recordings going.
- 1:43Yeah, so we've got a huge episode coming up because of the
- 1:47Perth Marathon and the Melbourne Marathon largely.
- 1:50So have you seen anyone since you landed you?
- 1:53Because you literally flew today as in Sunday?
- 1:56Have you seen people walking? Around with the finishing
- 1:58medals. And I was just in the gym
- 2:01earlier, which was sort of overlooking the MCG and the
- 2:04finish line. You could see people pulling,
- 2:05pulling stuff down. So you can see that it's been a
- 2:08busy day. How's how's the levels of FOMO
- 2:11then on a weekend like this where there's no racing going on
- 2:13from a personal? Level, yeah.
- 2:14And there was racing in the state I came from and the state
- 2:17I've arrived, and it's trying to block it out because there's not
- 2:21much you can do. But yeah, certainly wish I was
- 2:24participating in something, that's for sure.
- 2:26So your your escapism was literally just got oh God he's
- 2:30gone. Yeah, well, I'm gonna keep on
- 2:31going. Well anyway, the Dean just
- 2:34dropped off the line but now I can slag him off and he can't
- 2:38even hear me do it. But his his escapism from the
- 2:41FOMO of not racing was to just get 35,000 feet up in the air
- 2:45and forget about it all. So before we get into it
- 2:51properly, want to say a massive thanks to everyone who's jumped
- 2:54on early and bought the caps. Not sure if there's actually any
- 2:59left. If you click on the link and it
- 3:01allows you to buy them, then that means that there is, but
- 3:03there's also a very good chance that there isn't.
- 3:05So literally, yeah, the Earth. Thanks for everyone and whoever
- 3:10has purchased, they're all in the post.
- 3:11So we look forward to seeing them out there.
- 3:14And we actually saw one of them out there this morning.
- 3:16Host of another podcast, WA podcast here.
- 3:19Simon ironically flew to Melbourne to race and Hemp
- 3:24finally broke the three hour marathon.
- 3:26So I'm not sure whether you could say that the Caps come
- 3:29with a guaranteed PB, but they they give you a good chance
- 3:32based on that. What time do you run?
- 3:35That's some going by Simon. Yeah, he ran 257 I think after
- 3:40having two, at least two attempts of trying to break 3
- 3:43unsuccessfully so. Do you know where his previous
- 3:47attempts were? He done the Goldie this year and
- 3:51then he might have done another WA based one as well.
- 3:54OK. So like Goldie will be fast and
- 3:57where the conditions in Melbourne, were they good or do
- 3:59you know? Yeah, so we put a poll or a
- 4:02little Ask Me Anything on the Instagram earlier to get
- 4:05feedback from the races. And Harry Lavelle actually
- 4:08remember who was training with us in Perth last year, he raced
- 4:12Melbourne to run 248 and he said that the conditions were pretty
- 4:16much perfect and the course is largely flat.
- 4:20Nice. So fair play to Simon.
- 4:21Like super errors. It's such a big goal and now I
- 4:24feel like it's sort of like a monkey off the back and he can
- 4:26like now sort of kick on to the next massively, maybe 230.
- 4:31Simon, come on. Yeah, because maybe you, you
- 4:33have obviously other goals in the 5K10K half marathon, but
- 4:36when you like almost stuck on a big barrier in like any of the
- 4:40distances, you almost get hung up on it and like, find it hard
- 4:43to move on, don't you? Exactly, My mate Philip Marron
- 4:47from over here, he well, he's a miner and he ran, he ran 4 flash
- 4:52I don't know how many times. And then this summer he
- 4:55eventually broke it, but he broke up by like 3 seconds.
- 4:58He got like 357 or something like that.
- 5:01So like it was always in the tank.
- 5:03You just need the right race, the right time.
- 5:05And it was such a monkey off the back that like you never know
- 5:08what can happen, like so 355 or whatever.
- 5:10So yeah, it's, it's sometimes it's just mental block.
- 5:15Definitely. And that always seems to be the
- 5:16story when people finally do it, they've like peppered it for a
- 5:19while, and then when they do it, they like batter it.
- 5:22Yeah, it's so good. Hopefully that'll be me with sub
- 5:2515 at some point. My it's common.
- 5:28It's and especially after this, you'd be amazed after this long
- 5:31break, like to come back so fresh and all that.
- 5:33So it's going to be super exciting.
- 5:37As Crouchy would say, hashtag back stronger.
- 5:42Yeah, also I was wanted to mention and acknowledge that I
- 5:46mean this is the purpose of the double trouble to cause a bit of
- 5:49a stir. But the the sore one from last
- 5:51week from Aaron got a bit of reaction, lots of agreement and
- 5:55a little bit of disagreement. So we we put Apollo as well to
- 5:58kind of gauge people's feelings on that.
- 6:01And there was a high volume of responses.
- 6:04So it wasn't based on a small sample size but 77% of people
- 6:09agreed that it is too expensive, 11% of people said no, like it's
- 6:14quality gear and like therefore justifiably expensive and 13% of
- 6:18people weren't interested or like weren't even aware of socks
- 6:21I think. Are they largely UK based brand?
- 6:24You probably wouldn't be able to get it here.
- 6:26Yeah, it's mainly in the UK. Yeah, so one of the main
- 6:30responses coming back was from Auk based listener who
- 6:34ironically spent some time in Perth earlier on his life as
- 6:38well, Joe Turner. And maybe we have to take his
- 6:43his opinion with a pinch of salt because he's a a sore supported
- 6:47athlete. So he gets all the high quality
- 6:50gear for I don't know if he gets it for free, but I assume he
- 6:53does. But in fairness to him, he
- 6:56obviously has the lived experience because he trains and
- 6:59races in it. So he knows what it's all about.
- 7:01But he was telling us that it's produced in Europe, which means
- 7:06that they have a higher production cost and like the
- 7:08longevity that you get out of it is is worth it compared to other
- 7:13brands and stuff. So yeah, just acknowledging
- 7:15people's different opinions there.
- 7:17Like I like, it's probably like really, really nice gear, really
- 7:20good, really light. And it might be more like I
- 7:26looked it up and I think some of their stuff is still made in
- 7:28China, but umm, majority is made in Portugal.
- 7:31Like I actually text or and ask them this, but a lot of them
- 7:34like this stuff is very, very like it's made the same stuff as
- 7:37like Nike, Adidas and stuff. And like, I don't know about
- 7:40you, but like you go through, you wear T-shirts, like Nike
- 7:44T-shirts. I did AT shirts, New Balance
- 7:45T-shirts and they genuinely all do last years.
- 7:49So what I was saying is a pair like a pair of split shorts for
- 7:52€290.00, nearly €300. I just can't justify that when I
- 7:57can go to the Catalan, buy a pair of Kip run shorts for €20
- 8:01and they're going to last me just as long.
- 8:03And like Sore's big thing is I've seen something and they
- 8:07released a jacket that weighs like 139 grams.
- 8:10Like I couldn't give a shit if yes, if a jacket weighs 139
- 8:18grams and it costs like €600, like I really couldn't care
- 8:21less. I just want a Nike jacket that
- 8:24does me grand for like £40. Like I just can't justify how.
- 8:28And they're definitely making a massive markup.
- 8:30Like they have to be like, I worked in New Balance, I've seen
- 8:34how much of A markup they make on stuff like.
- 8:37So they're 100% no matter how ethical it is, they're making a
- 8:41crazy markup. Do you ever, you know, when if
- 8:44you buy new like training gear or race wear or whatever and
- 8:48then like the first time you wear it, you're almost like, oh,
- 8:51I've just like completely destroyed with sweat saturated
- 8:55my like new top or new shorts and you're almost like a bit
- 8:57gutted. You like you want to protect
- 8:59them a bit like it costs £500. I know I've been on training
- 9:04T-shirt and like it'd be more expensive than let's say a Nike
- 9:07or freaking Adidas T-shirts and but yeah, so I like wear that
- 9:12for only like some sessions and all.
- 9:15And so I'm like trying to save it.
- 9:17But when I moved to Australia, I am bought 3 pairs of white and
- 9:22shy shoe socks, 3 pairs of black ones and three pairs of white
- 9:26ones. And I've just been totally like
- 9:29every, they're all the only socks I wear.
- 9:31I just rotate between them ones. And after like 2 1/2 three
- 9:35years, it's finally time to cave in and buy some new ones.
- 9:39They're sort of because I like, you know, you can be really
- 9:43gentle putting socks on, but I've sort of yanked them on and
- 9:45pulled them up my leg. I think they're sort of going
- 9:48and no holes yet, but they're sort of going.
- 9:50So I think it's finally time to cave and buy some more of them
- 9:54socks. But like I don't mind spending
- 9:56the money on that because I know they are going to last for
- 9:58absolutely ages. Like the amount of times you
- 10:01wear like I would literally wear 3 pairs of socks a day, one for
- 10:05the morning session, then a normal sock and then one for the
- 10:08evening session. Like you wear them so much
- 10:10they're true to wash so much you literally abuse them.
- 10:13And the fact that they literally have no holes near the toes like
- 10:17I Nike ones that have holes in the toes like yeah, crazy.
- 10:21So I don't mind spending the money on them, but because they
- 10:24do a better job than the other brands.
- 10:27But let's say for sore, like I just don't know if they'll do,
- 10:32they'll do the exact same job. Like it's like you're going to
- 10:34run faster in a freaking singlet that is lighter.
- 10:38Like, yeah, I don't know. The the only thing I would say
- 10:43is I have a friend who used to play like low, not low level
- 10:47like professional football, but like lower level.
- 10:50So he's in like League 2 or something and he always used to
- 10:53say look good, feel good, play good.
- 10:58And I feel like summer sores, like designs and stuff, like it
- 11:02is pretty sick. So I would fancy being stood
- 11:06there on the start line in it because it might make you like
- 11:08feel good and therefore run a little bit better.
- 11:11I'll be a bit more confident. But yeah, I don't think I'll be
- 11:14paying like full resale price to be doing so.
- 11:16But I was because some of the clubs here in Ireland actually
- 11:20have sore like club vests. And I was on to my club and I
- 11:24was like, oh, because like you hear about the singlets and they
- 11:26look savage. I'm like, oh, can we try to get
- 11:28sore ones? And then the cheapest single is
- 11:31like 110 euro. Like how are you going to
- 11:35convince like the average like run, I don't know.
- 11:39Yeah. Anyway, it went straight to
- 11:40window. We're going for singlets now to
- 11:42cost like 30. Yeah, the actual like.
- 11:46Club ones, well my club anyway the like proper shit quality
- 11:50like thick as anything like big rim on the course like almost
- 11:54like a old P kiss like to fair the sore gear like it is very
- 11:58clean and like share. I don't know.
- 12:00Yeah, it does look very good, to be fair to them, but I just
- 12:04couldn't justify spending the money unless you're sponsored.
- 12:08Last thing I'll say before we move on because we've got Dean
- 12:11back and we need to make use of him for his results analysis
- 12:14whilst he's here. Is that the reason why I think
- 12:17Joe Turner, the the guy who's provided this feedback or
- 12:20opinion is sponsored by Saw? He's ran 100K in six hours, 35
- 12:26which when I first seen it I was like, I don't really know what
- 12:29that means. So put it into the calculator.
- 12:32Average 357 per kilometer. Wow, it's outrageous.
- 12:39Six hours of running at 4 minute under 4 minute kilometers, that
- 12:44is. Yeah, fuck.
- 12:47You best be hoping Jake's not listening because it'll probably
- 12:50like trigger something in his mind.
- 12:52And want to go out and run it and Jake is fit.
- 12:57Yeah, you're pretty impressed with these 10K workout what you
- 13:01are? Man, I was like the chap I was
- 13:03looking at a Strava bears. When I'm bored I just go on
- 13:06Jake's Strava to just see what he's been doing because he
- 13:09actually doesn't come up on my Strava feed sometimes.
- 13:11So yeah, just constantly hit in 280 K weeks and then you see a
- 13:16session and like K in Tokyo, I thought like 3 O one piece.
- 13:22Yeah, like. A lap course, but.
- 13:25But in that weather, I think it like, yeah, ridiculous.
- 13:29The. I was listening to a video like
- 13:31an interview of who's the favorite for Chicago?
- 13:34Is it Korea? Yeah, he's like defending
- 13:37champion and the interviewer asked about mileage and he's
- 13:41like, yeah, I've put together 4 weeks of 250 KS a week, which
- 13:46ordinarily I'd be like, that's phenomenal.
- 13:48But I get desensitized now after looking at Jake Strava as to
- 13:52what that that is I think. Actually, to see the video with
- 13:57Clayton Young and John Career where they're in the dining room
- 14:01and John Career is after eating, he had like a chicken, rice,
- 14:06whatever, but he has a tea and he has like 10 sachets of sugar.
- 14:11So he's old sachets just thrown on the plate with his leftover
- 14:14food and he's like 10 sachets of sugar in his tea and like, OK,
- 14:18so that's how you get the carbs in.
- 14:20That's a pretty popular and I would like some of the when you
- 14:24stay in some of those hotels and you say that like that's a
- 14:26pretty a bit of a go to, I think the sugary sugar out there,
- 14:32coffee and some teas like yeah. Before I came to Australia, I
- 14:35done a month in Thailand and went to the airport and had this
- 14:39like Thai tea or something, and it was sickeningly safe.
- 14:44And I was like, I just couldn't drink.
- 14:46It's whatever they use, condensed milk or something, and
- 14:49then they put more sugar on top of it.
- 14:51Yeah, not for me. I I spent 4 weeks in India once
- 14:56for work and they have like this very sweet tea and yeah, I mean
- 15:00it was dangerous. I couldn't fit into my suits by
- 15:03the end of it, but it's just yeah, that was a good trip, but
- 15:07good food. But yeah, two carb, 2 carb
- 15:10intense. Two things on the Chicago chart
- 15:15whilst we're here because obviously the race as we record
- 15:18hasn't happened yet and I was going to suggest to Owen I
- 15:21haven't actually done it yet so we'll get his response live on
- 15:24air that maybe later on because we're going to catch up again
- 15:27anyway, me and Owen could double back and review the Chicago
- 15:31results and add the match. So yeah, listeners, they'll be
- 15:35at the end of the episode. All things being well, it's
- 15:38going to be it's going to be stacked because Connor man's
- 15:42going for American record, probably on North American
- 15:45record re Linkletter is going to try and hit the North American
- 15:49record. If you drunk career you've got
- 15:51Kipling. Yeah, we have to.
- 15:53Did you see Jonathan Galt from Let's Run?
- 15:56He interviewed Kipling MO I think it was yesterday, and he
- 16:00asked him like a pretty controversial question, but I
- 16:02was buzzing with it. Have you seen the clip?
- 16:04No. He says, oh, your agent, Doctor
- 16:09Rosa, is getting a reputation for, like, lots of his athletes
- 16:13failing drugs tests. Like, does that worry you or how
- 16:16do you feel about that? And there's a couple of guys
- 16:18because they video it as well. There's a couple of guys stood.
- 16:21Behind Kiplimo and like as. Go get through his question and
- 16:26you, like, get the sense of where he's going with it.
- 16:28Kaplimo is just getting, like, tapped in the back and nudged by
- 16:31must be like, not his actual agent Rosa, but like some sort
- 16:35of representative, as if to say, like, keep your mouth shut.
- 16:38Like don't be actually answering this question.
- 16:41And he's like, yeah, I have nothing to say.
- 16:44Both. Emma, did you hear on the other
- 16:47podcasts that, umm, they say they tell the drug story about
- 16:51how I think it was last week we mentioned them as well, your man
- 16:55who normally got six years but it got cut down to five.
- 16:57And how he actually got sourced the EPO, like he actually didn't
- 17:01know, like in exclamation marks, like he apparently he didn't
- 17:05know what he was taken. Like, would you believe that or.
- 17:07No, No, he definitely knows. Yeah.
- 17:12He. Definitely not.
- 17:13Yeah, exactly. That's yeah.
- 17:17Because he was, I think he said he was told that I'm this gets
- 17:20rid of like lactic in your legs or some shit like that.
- 17:24If only there was like. No doubt it does.
- 17:26If only there was a product and a brand that could do that
- 17:29legally. And how cheap and accessible it
- 17:34is as well to be able to like just ask a bus driver to source
- 17:37it for you for what? Like a fiver or something.
- 17:39Like, no wonder they're all like, tempted by the devil.
- 17:44Any because we won't maybe won't otherwise cover it, but did you
- 17:48want to throw out any predictions and see how they age
- 17:50by the end of the podcast? Yeah, I'll say months.
- 17:56Definitely breaks the record, maybe comfortably, but I don't
- 17:59know because it's in, I don't know if you've seen is, is
- 18:02Charter in the lead up, but he sounds like breaking the record.
- 18:05He's almost like assuming is like the benchmark, like that's
- 18:09definitely on. It's what more he can do beyond
- 18:12that. So I don't know how fast they'll
- 18:15go. Don't really want to like put
- 18:16time on it either. And I guess the other question
- 18:20is Korea versus Cappellino, isn't it?
- 18:23I've no idea. I'd just be stabbing in the
- 18:25dark. I'm going to sit on the fence.
- 18:28Who's in the women's field? I'm trying to find it here.
- 18:33We've got it here if you it's in the agenda if you scroll
- 18:36through. Oh yeah, there's.
- 18:43Not as much happening in the women's, to be fair.
- 18:46You've got Cali Thackery and obviously Philly Bowden.
- 18:49I think Dan Yaxley messages she's pulled out fractured
- 18:52names. Oh.
- 18:53My God, I was listening to her reason why she pulled down.
- 18:56I was like, Oh my God, this is exactly what's going to happen
- 18:58to my knee. Did you?
- 19:00Did you? She fell on it though.
- 19:02No I don't. I might have hit it off
- 19:03something but I can't remember so.
- 19:06Yeah, hers was. I thought hers was off the back
- 19:08of a fall. I thought she was saying.
- 19:10Feel bad for her though. Oh yeah because she like got 6
- 19:15good weeks of running. Like the pain went away.
- 19:17It's weird. Way up, yeah.
- 19:19Yeah, yeah. So she was running on a on that
- 19:22whatever. Yeah, break for Yeah got so
- 19:26close. Then just popped.
- 19:29What? What do you think on man's
- 19:30Linklater Korea Kaplimo then? I think man's run I I think,
- 19:36yeah, I agree. I feel like he's likely in shape
- 19:38to break the record, maybe 20330 maybe, which would be
- 19:42phenomenal. And then I don't know about, I
- 19:45think that Rory Linklater's maybe trying to talk it into
- 19:48existence rather than like man's has like run what, 59 low for
- 19:531/2. It sort of makes more sense.
- 19:55So I don't know. I don't know if you'll get the
- 19:57Canadian record. I'll say he won't.
- 19:59And then as Korea wins, that's that'll be my tip.
- 20:03I'm about to keep playing, man. Trying to see the weather
- 20:08because I hear it could have been a bit warm.
- 20:12Yeah, I thought maybe it's a bit middling.
- 20:14Not not too bad either way. Above 15 or something.
- 20:18Yeah. 10:00 it's 1511 o'clock 1612 o'clock seventeen. 1:00 it
- 20:23so all. Then we'll be done by then.
- 20:25So yeah, was it 14 to 16°, which you can't really complain about,
- 20:28can you? No, I mean, so Perth today, I
- 20:32think it started at 11 degrees, got up to 15° by the end or you
- 20:37know, 16° by 8. Degrees.
- 20:40So yeah, pretty nice as far as October Perth weather.
- 20:42I think when I did it, I don't know if he a while ago or when I
- 20:48yeah, I think it was like 1617° when you start so.
- 20:52When to get it a bit? Cooler then.
- 20:53That's nice. When I'd done it last year, it
- 20:55got pretty warm in the second-half.
- 20:58Well, and yeah, and so they started the marathon at six,
- 21:01whereas you're starting that half at like almost 8:00 just
- 21:04before I. So it would have been, it would
- 21:07have been probably over 20° when you started I think.
- 21:10So I could easily like knock off like 2 minutes.
- 21:13Minimum. All right, let's let's get into
- 21:17the results properly then, because there's there's a few
- 21:19maybe spicy takes that are going to come that we're going to want
- 21:22Dean around for to defuse. So we'll start in Melbourne.
- 21:29So Melbourne Marathon on the men's race was won by the big
- 21:34favorite on the day, but obviously he still had to
- 21:36execute Jack Rayner 215-O2 and he has run 211 before, but
- 21:43clearly he didn't need to run any faster than that today.
- 21:45He's beating Steve McKenna in second, who's run APB of two
- 21:491642 and Fraser Darcy was third in This is a weird one.
- 21:55It's not technically the fastest time.
- 21:57He's run 21738. But if you're being technical,
- 22:01it's PB because the whereas fastest time comes from Sydney
- 22:05is like technically illegal or ineligible for records because
- 22:09of the downhill nature. Then on the women's race,
- 22:13Caitlin Abben Adams, the debutant, won in two hours, 3026
- 22:18seconds from Sarah Klein backing up from Tokyo in two hours 3559
- 22:23and Millie Clark there in 2 hours 3740.
- 22:27So before we move on from the marathon, any observations,
- 22:31comments on those? But yeah, like you said, maybe
- 22:34Jack Randon did enough to win by the I only saw the second-half
- 22:38of the stream. Did you watch?
- 22:40I don't know if you were up early enough to see the first
- 22:42part, but how the race unfolded. But from what I saw, was it
- 22:47Fraser Darcy was ahead of, I think Steve McKenna, human.
- 22:50Is it Joe Fukuda, the Japanese guy that's been around for a
- 22:53long time? We're maybe running together.
- 22:56And then perhaps Steve judged, judged his effort better, you
- 23:01know, the best of those three and came over the top of them I
- 23:04think later to finish second. So I don't know, I think those
- 23:08guys, the guys that ran second and third, I think hopefully
- 23:10they'll be pretty happy. Like what's it a minute PB for
- 23:15or two maybe for Steve McKenna, I think he's run 218 a few times
- 23:18and 219 won. So like it's his fourth marathon
- 23:22this year. So all pretty solid, solid runs.
- 23:24And that's his fastest time, which hopefully he's be happy
- 23:28with. I think he would be happy with
- 23:30that, I assume, and just fun to be mixing in those races.
- 23:33I mean, I would have liked to have been part of that race,
- 23:35that's for sure. But yeah, can't race everything,
- 23:37can't always be within fit. Yeah, I thought they obviously
- 23:40ran as as good as they could. It gave them the opportunity to
- 23:43be as competitive as they could be.
- 23:44And then yeah, Caitlin Adams, I think that's who we tipped on in
- 23:48terms of debutante. So looks like really good debut.
- 23:52SA would be pretty pumped because that's second and third
- 23:55in the men's and 1st in the in the women's.
- 23:58So. And yeah, Sarah, Sarah Klein
- 24:00would be happy to be backing up so close to since the world
- 24:04champs, right? So yeah, all looked like good
- 24:06races. Looked like really good weather
- 24:08in Melbourne as well. Looked like looks like they had
- 24:09a really nice day. Yeah, SA set in the dominance in
- 24:14Victoria. So then that continued to in the
- 24:17win women's half marathon as Izzy Bath Doyle took the win in
- 24:226855, which was a course record there.
- 24:25So I think from memory last year where it was Izzy, Jess and
- 24:30Leanne with that, did they run 69?
- 24:32Like kind of like 10-15 ish was it?
- 24:36Yeah, and I think maybe that was not long after Izzy had run the
- 24:40Australian record for the 10K around that Albert Park course.
- 24:44Was it the pre run pre and then was a bit of an upset to get
- 24:48rolled at Melbourne really. So yeah, probably happy to be 20
- 24:52seconds quicker and like you say, the fastest time ever.
- 24:56I don't know. Yeah, nice event.
- 24:57I think isn't it it all and and the stream and those sorts of
- 25:00things. We'll probably get on to that
- 25:01more when we talk about Perth, but it looked like a really good
- 25:03morning. They do it so well and I think
- 25:05they split the courses up was what the COM I heard along the
- 25:09commentary you used to run into each other between the half and
- 25:11the full whereas they kept that all separate this year which I
- 25:14thought was really good. I think there was a couple of
- 25:17listeners were writing in there and I've seen Brett in his
- 25:21interview saying I think from the last 12 K the half
- 25:27marathoners, the front of the half marathon is made.
- 25:30Oh no, the front of the marathoners joined like the mid
- 25:34slash back of the half marathoners, which caused a bit
- 25:38of weaving and bobbin. So I think people are raising
- 25:43that as like a bit feedback for them.
- 25:48Do you know the way in Perth Marathon Festival?
- 25:51Like the 5K comes in one entrance at stadium, 10K
- 25:55another. They've all different entrances
- 25:57in Melbourne. Do they all come in the one or
- 25:59is it like the same as part to the Aquaman at different angles?
- 26:03They all, no, it's a bit different to they all just come
- 26:06in and but they all go through different shoots.
- 26:09So you all sort of do the same loop around the G, but you sort
- 26:12of you get sort of funneled into your own light lane, I suppose
- 26:17one's further outside than the other.
- 26:19That's the good thing. Well, from my experience in
- 26:23Perth, when I done the half like you hit no traffic because
- 26:26you're all going in different entrances, which is which is
- 26:29really good. Yeah, and I think whereas in
- 26:32Melbourne it all gets quite confusing even like you're all
- 26:34pretty disorientated on a good day.
- 26:37But like in that last five KS, I remember getting completely
- 26:41confused trying to. I remember yelling at Hal's, she
- 26:43was on the bike and then Hal started yelling at an official.
- 26:45I couldn't work out where to go, left or right as you're heading
- 26:48down out of. Is it the 10?
- 26:51And then, yeah, back into the G as well?
- 26:53You're trying to work out which way you turn.
- 26:54So yeah, Optus, they do it quite well in terms of the finish.
- 26:58They probably just don't have as much of an atmosphere because
- 27:00they don't. The people don't gather around
- 27:02as much, do they? Was there bottles for the elites
- 27:06because I even think Danny Axley and he commented on in the in
- 27:11the circle easy to build clubhouse dot M Jack Rayner was
- 27:15getting 100 bottles. So was there like was there
- 27:17bottles on course for the elites or I feel like that's sort of is
- 27:20it cheating? I don't know.
- 27:22No. Well, so in the so I did it,
- 27:25this is a while back now, but the boxes were the, the bottles
- 27:28were still in boxes on tables. Like it wasn't very well
- 27:31organised like you'd say in like a Japanese race or even in Gold
- 27:34Coast. Like what they'll do with some
- 27:36of the tables, at least for preferred and the late starts is
- 27:39they'll based on your seed number or bid number, place your
- 27:43bottle along a table. Whereas I know in the past for
- 27:46Melbourne, you're literally just fishing them out of a, out of a
- 27:48cardboard box that gets transported to the table.
- 27:52So it's pretty, which is it makes it's a bit dangerous.
- 27:54Everyone's running on top of each other trying to get them
- 27:56out of there. So what I remember the directors
- 28:00said in the past is that if you have someone within the rule,
- 28:03there's rules around how many meters either side of an aid
- 28:05station you can receive a special drink, but that you can
- 28:09get someone. And so I know when House did it,
- 28:11there was a group of cyclists that would sort of follow the
- 28:14cult run, you know, cycle in parallel with the course so that
- 28:17they could get to the aid stations, fish out the drinks
- 28:19and hand them to, to use. Because like, surely you're
- 28:22saving so much time if you have, if you can avoid the chaos at a
- 28:26drink station without slowing down, like if someone could just
- 28:29literally just stick out a hand and you can just grab a bottle
- 28:32going full speed. Like I feel like you save, like
- 28:35it adds up over time, all time, seconds you're saving and even
- 28:39like messing with, you're like, slowing down and speeding up.
- 28:42Like yeah, I feel. Like, yeah.
- 28:45It's illegal. When when I did it that year,
- 28:48like the guys that were having to stop, grab the drink bottles
- 28:52and then accelerate straight back to get catch up to our
- 28:55group because it was there was pacemakers, they were by 25 KS,
- 28:58most of them were gone because they just spent so much extra
- 29:01energy doing that. So yeah, certainly.
- 29:03Yeah, yeah, yeah. All those little lactate spikes
- 29:06just catch up with you, I think. It sounds like that ruling has
- 29:10actually saved Jack Rayner's race today as well because he in
- 29:14his post race interview he said he was cramping.
- 29:17I can't remember at what distance, but he told his
- 29:20brother who was on course handing bottles.
- 29:23His brother then went to shop, got salt, put it in his next
- 29:26bottle and he then took salt on board when his brother cycled up
- 29:31to meet him with the salt in the bottle.
- 29:33And you know what, I've seen that.
- 29:34I've seen that because normally he's drinking out of like a
- 29:37proper like Sookie, like when the bakes bottles.
- 29:39But he actually had like, you know, I think it's pump.
- 29:42Do you know that bottle? Yeah.
- 29:46Yeah, yeah, Mount Franklin, but the fancier 1.
- 29:49Yeah. He took a swig at one of them.
- 29:51I was like, what? That's so weird.
- 29:52Why? But yeah, it must have been
- 29:53that. It's a magic bottle.
- 29:58Going back to the women's half to finish off the results.
- 30:01Then the New Zealand lady who I incorrectly labeled as
- 30:04Australian last week, Georgie Georgia.
- 30:07Greg Rick was second in 6944, but I will claim that I
- 30:13highlighted her ability on paper.
- 30:16Beat Sinead diver into third. Sinead ran 70 minutes and 56
- 30:21seconds, so feel like that's a decent result on a journey back
- 30:25towards the top because there's a couple of ladies in behind
- 30:28there who like she would be like glad to be and finish as high up
- 30:32as third, no doubt. Yeah, it's a very solid run and
- 30:37nice to see her her running good to good good, particularly for
- 30:41people over 30 to say that. Oh here actually.
- 30:45Big fan of that Nike kit I thought was cool.
- 30:51Yeah, with the trip, the tribute call away.
- 30:53Yeah, it's cool. They do shit like that so well,
- 30:57don't they? Like timed perfectly and it's so
- 31:01well thought out. Speaking of, did you did you
- 31:05watch Jake Whiteman's recap video where he spoke about his
- 31:09silver medal? It's really good.
- 31:11I'll put it onto the I nearly posted it into the inner circle,
- 31:16but he in there spoke about how the Nike sponsored national
- 31:20teams like JB, they would have a like a heats kit and then they
- 31:25would have a separate kit for for finals.
- 31:29So and it was like a flasher, like looking looking kit.
- 31:32You only bust that out if you're if you're yeah, in a final,
- 31:35which I just saw. Yeah, again, just another like
- 31:38cool Nike, Nike Nike move. Like it's like when Tiger Woods
- 31:42used to wear red or black, you know, on Sunday in a in a major
- 31:46just as a get himself in the right headspace.
- 31:50Tiger Red and then he I was suckered into the market
- 31:53employee from Tiger Woods and Nike probably together when they
- 31:57released his set of custom Nike irons titled the the VR Victory
- 32:03Red irons. I was like, fucking hell.
- 32:04I need need these bad boys. What were you saying about
- 32:07before? About, you know, feel fast, run
- 32:10fast. Well, that's it, yeah.
- 32:12Hold a VR then hit a good shot, something like that and shoot 24
- 32:18over par rather than 25 over par in the men's house.
- 32:24Go on. One last sidetrack, but Harry,
- 32:27who ran with us, Harry ran the Melbourne Marathon today.
- 32:31Hopefully a friend of the show and friend of ours when we were
- 32:34doing a training block together in the lead up for Ballarat.
- 32:37But I did see in the in his comments that that he said he'd
- 32:41be going out to try and shoot a decent score this afternoon off
- 32:44the back of the marathon this morning.
- 32:46So someone that can hit the ball well as well as run well.
- 32:51Oh yeah. Was that to make himself feel
- 32:54better over the marathon or just in general?
- 32:57I'm not sure I wasn't exactly sure what the the inside jokes
- 33:00were, but I pet potentially. I know like he runs very well,
- 33:03but he also plays golf, perhaps even better, I think, doesn't
- 33:07he? So I.
- 33:07Think he knows something about that?
- 33:09I think I distinctly remember him saying in the I was going to
- 33:12say in the ice bath, but definitely wasn't the ice bath.
- 33:14He didn't spend much time in the in the in the hot bath that he
- 33:17plays off scratch. Yeah.
- 33:20Good going. We don't really have time to
- 33:22waste on this, but if you could convert a scratch handicap into
- 33:27a marathon time, you're talking like 20 something probably,
- 33:32aren't you? For a man or no?
- 33:37Because all pros are like plus whatever.
- 33:39Aren't these. Pros are like plus 6 to 9.
- 33:41I think so. But I mean, it's it's the real
- 33:45point again though. Yeah, for sure.
- 33:46Yeah. OK, we won't waste any more time
- 33:49than that in the men's half marathon.
- 33:52This was the big one where there was plenty of big names and also
- 33:55plenty of uncertainties as to how it would play out.
- 33:59But now with the benefit of hindsight, it kind of reads
- 34:02quite not obvious. But it makes sense that half two
- 34:06Shrin Sauce took the win in 6213.
- 34:08The fact that this guy's second isn't so obvious.
- 34:10Zac Faccioni, That's a unbelievable result for him.
- 34:136321, followed by New Zealander Toby Goldner, 6322 and now
- 34:21typically won't read beyond third.
- 34:22But Brett Robinson finished in a disappointing 4th and Stu
- 34:27Mcswain in a even more so disappointing 6th, both running
- 34:32Brett like just a couple seconds under 64 and Stewie 6416.
- 34:37So not the best days for the big hitters there for the men.
- 34:40Yeah, I'm not. Did you listen to it?
- 34:42Well, I guess half in terms of the results was that a quite
- 34:46clean sweep for Owen and I. So that's 4 from 4.
- 34:52So glad we called it have to go with have to was right and maybe
- 34:58you shout out to where where was greenie scoop or maybe credit
- 35:01goes to the coach we lost at front runner who's joined on
- 35:06Oceania right. So maybe something's going on
- 35:10there, but was Zach Fatchione, was he up there in the National
- 35:15Cross earlier in the year, I think.
- 35:17Yeah, I think so. Did I think I had to mention
- 35:20that on the commentary? Yeah, I remember watching that
- 35:23race and watching him contesting there.
- 35:25So he's obviously had a pretty good year, so good to see it
- 35:29transfer from the cross country to the road.
- 35:31So but yeah, took some big scalps, but it sounds like there
- 35:35was a bit. Was there a couple of groups
- 35:36maybe in that Brett and Stewie were maybe running together?
- 35:39I don't know if they're spending more time thinking about one
- 35:40another or I don't know. Or maybe that's just where their
- 35:43fitness is at. Who's the guy who came third?
- 35:48Toby Galter, Because that's a good run.
- 35:52Like 63 is getting up there. Yeah, I think also that the guy
- 35:58who finished 7th next and see was New Zealander as well.
- 36:04And then, yeah, well, I'm down to 7 so I might as well say 8th.
- 36:07Ryan Gregson finished 8th and 6458, so no doubt he too will be
- 36:12disappointed with that. It can't be your day every day,
- 36:17but I'm sure Brett, Stewie and Ryan are very much scratching
- 36:21their heads this afternoon as to what went wrong.
- 36:24Brett particularly like on the back of Sydney, it sounds like
- 36:28he felt like he was in a good place going into that and that
- 36:30result came as a bit of a shock. And then he had to kind of pick
- 36:34himself up from that to go again.
- 36:37Would have been hoping for not even like a great result, but
- 36:40just an okay result to then go and put another marathon block
- 36:44on top of. But he'll probably have to
- 36:46battle some mental demons to get himself in a positive frame of
- 36:50mind to restart the Valencia block now.
- 36:52But hopefully he can put that together and go well in
- 36:55Valencia. Lastly for the 10K here the was
- 36:59obliterated by Adam Goddard again I think SA 2840 winning by
- 37:04over a minute to Johannes Dog Noor 2941 and Zaid Al Saeed 2948
- 37:12in 3rd. And for the women's 10K was won
- 37:18by Ellie Pashley 3341 on her comeback race.
- 37:22I think former was it a World Champs representative rather
- 37:26than Olympian and second was Stella Radford in 3412 followed
- 37:32by Tiana Katter in. Yeah, I think she ran the same
- 37:36world as Moose, didn't she? Yeah.
- 37:41Ellie Pashley. Yeah.
- 37:44She was she. Ran the 10K with Sinead at the
- 37:482019 World champs, but I thought they were both.
- 37:52Yeah, well, who was the Yeah, that's right.
- 37:57So yeah, 2019. Yeah, so huge comeback runs from
- 38:02both her and Sinead. So I reckon that concludes
- 38:07Melbourne. The only other thing to add is
- 38:09that, well, yeah, we reached out to the listeners to get feedback
- 38:14and lots of it was good on the course on the weather and the
- 38:17bad things were about the the marathon and the half marathon
- 38:21integrating towards the end. But like the Expo looked class
- 38:24and like just the general atmosphere.
- 38:26Like it seems to be a proper, I don't know if it's because it's
- 38:29a Nike sponsored event and like they just do these things really
- 38:33well, but it seems like proper festival atmosphere and like the
- 38:37running is just not a small part of the running is like the final
- 38:42part of a massive like weekend celebration of running over
- 38:45there. So they do things well.
- 38:49Ellie was third at the Tokyo Olympics, just so she was at the
- 38:54Olympics a couple years later. OK, so yeah, world champs and
- 38:58Olympic representative huge. Now then move on to Perth
- 39:04Running Festival, which also happened this morning.
- 39:06The marathon started at 6:00 AM, just about two kilometers away
- 39:11from my apartment, but I couldn't manage to get myself
- 39:14out of bed and down to the start line for it.
- 39:17So the marathon was paying $10,000 for the win, $5000 for
- 39:222nd and $2000 for 3rd, which is decent if not great prize money
- 39:28given the kind of like the calibre of the event.
- 39:33And the men's race was won by. I'll get to the controversial
- 39:41things later. It was won by Paul Ianni who was
- 39:45the winner of last year's race too.
- 39:47So back-to-back wins in Perth for the Kenyan, although there's
- 39:50an Australian flag next to his name on the official results.
- 39:53Matt Smith of WA Slash Perth was second in 2/27/19 and 3rd was
- 40:01Carlos Boss Aquino in 2/31/17. I'll do the women's results and
- 40:06then we can talk about them. The woman who won the women's
- 40:10race was Kellen with Ythira. Now I think she was too a Kenyan
- 40:15athlete. But it wasn't the woman who won
- 40:18last year's race. The women, the woman who
- 40:21finished second was an Australian, Abigail Nordberg.
- 40:24So sorry. The winner ran 23852 and Abigail
- 40:28Nordberg in second was 24215 and Abigail just finished as the 4th
- 40:34Australian at Sydney Marathon just a couple of weeks ago, so
- 40:37quick backup for her. And the woman who was third was
- 40:41Jane Fardel in Two 4945 South. Any observations here?
- 40:50Question. This is probably a really,
- 40:51really stupid question and I probably should know the answer
- 40:53to it, but so on the results, you've time in your Internet
- 40:56time. So net time, is that the same as
- 41:01no, which is gun time? Like what's the difference
- 41:04between all these? Gun time will be time and that
- 41:08time will be when they cross the bloody first time.
- 41:12In map, which from the video from WAMC page, you can see that
- 41:16for some reason the weather like the big, what's it called, like
- 41:21the archway, what you start underneath, they'll start on the
- 41:25start line there and then like when they GO-321-GO, the actual
- 41:30first timing chip is like 3 yards in front of it.
- 41:34So it's took them a couple of seconds to get to the actual
- 41:37start timeship, which is bizarre.
- 41:40So you actually can't use your net time, you have to use the
- 41:45gun time, correct? Officially, yeah, if you are in
- 41:50like the elite or priority part of the race, because typically
- 41:54you start on the front line or the second line or whatever
- 41:57anyway. Whereas if you're seeded further
- 42:00down the race, then it's unfair to award those athletes the gun
- 42:04time because it takes them 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds,
- 42:08depending on where they start to actually hit the start official
- 42:12start line, if that makes sense. So like, why is gun time?
- 42:18Yes. So this is just a bit silly
- 42:20really that those guys should have the same gun and net time,
- 42:25but because they put the start my head of the start line,
- 42:28there's two second variance. I remember there was AGB out
- 42:31late, I think it was just Warner Judd that she qualified for some
- 42:37race using her of the faster 1. So which which one's only the
- 42:43the net time is the faster one. The net time will always be the
- 42:47faster one. Yeah.
- 42:48So she qualified with her net time but because she was a lady
- 42:52and all the lads took this frontline her gun time was
- 43:00slower because she didn't cross the line obviously.
- 43:03So technically she qualified but because you only take your gun
- 43:07time and she didn't qualify which is actually crazy.
- 43:11Like why is this still a thing in 2025?
- 43:13Get rid. Yeah, you'd be sick if that was
- 43:16the case, wouldn't you? And the same if it was like to
- 43:20cross a big threshold like 233 hours, four hours, whatever, if
- 43:23it was just the wrong side of that for you.
- 43:25It makes no sense whatsoever. I think if you're in a, if
- 43:30you're in a mass participation race and you're not near the
- 43:33front, taking your net time makes sense.
- 43:36I think they actually often award the net time in those
- 43:39circumstances, but if you have like a seeded start, you always
- 43:42get awarded the gun time. Yeah, like Hal's ran the half
- 43:46today and she and I was, I was tracking her and I was a bit
- 43:51nervous at the start with a 10K split, but then I realized that
- 43:54it was over 3 minutes before she crossed the start line.
- 43:58Oh wow, and how did she get on in the end?
- 44:01Yeah, because she ran, she was 4 minutes quicker than last year.
- 44:03So like she was wrapped or when she ran 1/2 last year.
- 44:07But yeah, she yeah, ran an hour 41.
- 44:10But yeah, had a great time. But I think started far too
- 44:14back, far too far back. Like I think she spent the first
- 44:17few KS just overtaking people. I mean, she was overtaking
- 44:21people the whole way, but but you know, the self seating
- 44:24people were Yeah, and. I think it was pretty congested
- 44:27at the start. You know, it's very narrow.
- 44:28Start starting corral. Is that with the race strategy
- 44:32you gave her, she was able to execute to perfection.
- 44:36I did prescribe heart rate and yeah, certain heart rates to hit
- 44:42and she went slightly ahead of them, but I sort of knew she
- 44:46would do that, so it all worked out well.
- 44:50I knew she wanted to send it a bit.
- 44:51She'd be like Owen loves the loves the smoke.
- 44:54So, but I had to, I had to dial it down a couple, but but no,
- 45:00she was. Stoked.
- 45:00So it was good and it was a nice day.
- 45:02So, well, you, you were. Both in the same school, Yeah
- 45:04weren't you? So no excuses for you not taking
- 45:074 minutes off your half PB next year.
- 45:10Yeah, all right. Didn't you mention last week how
- 45:14I just. Absolutely.
- 45:15Murdered. My last half by going out too
- 45:17hard so maybe just try and execute.
- 45:21Maybe because Hales is a good executor, she could provide you
- 45:24with your next race strategy in your heart rate zones.
- 45:28Probably not a bad shout. I'll read the rest of the
- 45:33results from the the festival because there's also 1/2
- 45:35marathon and a 10K and then we can talk about it more so.
- 45:39So the half marathon was won unassumingly by Tim Vincent's
- 45:43who's just represented Australia in the marathon in the World
- 45:46Athletics Championships Tokyo. And it wasn't until the half
- 45:51marathon started and Tim Vincent's appeared on the live
- 45:55stream and Dean Tax like is that Tim Vincent's running around
- 45:58Perth? We we realized that he was here.
- 46:03So he won in 6517 from Andy Smith in 2nd 7038 and Josh Van
- 46:09Zealand in 3rd 7044. The women's race was won by
- 46:14frontrunner's own so we can claim this one.
- 46:17Massive congratulations to Rebecca Bolster in a 7935
- 46:22followed by Benny Ostrich one hour 24/06 and Cat Watt who is
- 46:27an avid listener. So well done Cat forgetting on
- 46:29the podium in one hour 2419 last.
- 46:35I think it's, I think it's just crazy that Tim Vincent ran the
- 46:41Perth Marathon Festival and like, we didn't know about it.
- 46:47You know, what's what's funny now that like it's apparent
- 46:51yesterday morning when I was getting back from a bike ride, I
- 46:54was going into the hotel over the road, the Pan Pacific's to
- 46:57get a coffee and this guy was coming out and looked like he
- 47:01was going for a jog. And you know, when you look at
- 47:04you, when you see someone like running, you can tell that
- 47:07they're a good runner like always just by how they how they
- 47:10hold themselves. And I could see he had he was
- 47:13from behind, but he had a pair of mega blasts on.
- 47:16And I was like, oh, this guy wonder if he's doing.
- 47:18I was almost going to, you know, some like quite forward or weird
- 47:22like that. I was almost going to say like,
- 47:23oh, excuse me, Are you doing the the marathon tomorrow or the
- 47:26half marathon? And like it, it was Tim Vincent,
- 47:30now that we know it was him. And how funny would it have been
- 47:33if I had to just randomly ask this guy and he's turned around
- 47:36like, well, yeah, just run at the World Athletics champs.
- 47:39Actually. That's crazy.
- 47:41But yeah, $5000 for Tim there and also for Rebecca.
- 47:46So unreal payday. And the 10K before we get into
- 47:51the stream, etcetera. Was won by Dan Kanala in 30
- 47:54minutes. Dad by Max Shervington in 2nd.
- 47:5731-O2 Jonah, honey Canary, it's said 3148.
- 48:02The women Rachel McCormick won in a blistering 3524, followed
- 48:07by Amy Buckingham, 36 O 7, and Lauren Ramsden, third in 3718.
- 48:14So I think Owen, you were asleep whilst this was going on
- 48:20potentially. I know Dean and I were trying to
- 48:23stay in touch with what was going on despite Dean sent a
- 48:26photo like literally being in the air.
- 48:28So God knows what he was up to there managing to whether he had
- 48:32the bird's eye view or if he had some Wi-Fi going on up there, I
- 48:36don't know. But I voiced my opinion last
- 48:38week, like being rattled by not knowing what the elite field was
- 48:42for. I know it's not like a Sydney
- 48:45marathon, a Melbourne marathon, the Gold Coast, but like
- 48:48nevertheless the direction in which or like the, the
- 48:52blueprints that these marathons are laying out in terms of like
- 48:55how to structure your social media and like you, you pre
- 48:59race, build up and introduce the, the elites and stuff and
- 49:03build profile and build hype, build the storylines.
- 49:06It's there for everyone to see. Yes, Perth for some reason
- 49:12didn't follow suit. And yesterday, out of interest,
- 49:15I went down to the Expo because the stadium's very close to
- 49:19where I live and mainly because I'd seen on Instagram, I'd seen
- 49:24the Melbourne Expo and I was like, oh, looks like it's going
- 49:27to be a class atmosphere and stuff.
- 49:28I'll just go down to just be a bit of a run in there than be
- 49:31involved in it. And there's literally football
- 49:34there besides the bib collection, like some playing
- 49:37tables, couple of course maps, but like, no sponsors or, you
- 49:42know, like little pop up tents or like a stage or like some
- 49:46music or like anything to kind of make it more than just a
- 49:51transaction of picking up your bib.
- 49:53And then there was one desk which said most of them said bib
- 49:57collection. There's one desk which said help
- 49:59desk. So I went up to that desk
- 50:02because I clearly wasn't collecting A bib.
- 50:04And I said, oh, excuse me. Do you know, are there any
- 50:07international elites in the race?
- 50:10And the guy says, I'm sure there is.
- 50:12Yeah. And I was like, oh, I know this
- 50:15is like, quite random, but like, do you know who they are?
- 50:18Or do you have like, a list of anyone's names or anything?
- 50:20Like, I'm, I'm sorry that this seems like a bit of a weird
- 50:23question, but whatever. And it was just like, well, no,
- 50:29almost like, why would I? So at that point I realized it
- 50:33wasn't worth really like probing any further, so kind of just
- 50:37went away. Not knowing who was going to be
- 50:40on the start line until we put the.
- 50:41Stream on and then we see Matt Smith we.
- 50:46Already in a similar vein, I remember going to collect my
- 50:50beer and then asking about like drinks and this is 2 years ago
- 50:54and what I could do there and yeah, just got similar sort of
- 50:57blank stares in response. So pretty unsophisticated I
- 51:00think. And like this probably, what
- 51:04with the conversation around this is supposed to be like
- 51:06celebration of Perth run and stuff, which rightly so, it's
- 51:09the the massive event here. So kudos for putting it on and
- 51:15being what it is in the 1st place.
- 51:16But obviously we're just kind of highlighting areas where there
- 51:20is room for improvements. And it's receipt, it might be
- 51:24received as a criticism, but it's not intended as a
- 51:26criticism. Yeah, like so say four years
- 51:30ago, this was the Perth Marathon was run around footpaths, there
- 51:34was a much more modest fries pool, like it was a few
- 51:39volunteers run by the marathon club.
- 51:41Now it's like closing the major roads.
- 51:43It finishes inside a beautiful stadium, great prize money, like
- 51:47they've got streamer, like they've actually got a live
- 51:50stream for it. So what they're doing is great,
- 51:53but there's certainly for both the viewers that want to follow
- 52:00it as well as even like athletes.
- 52:02I think Hal's mentioned the first one, K, like K Mark as she
- 52:04saw was at 20 KS today and like like the timing mats.
- 52:09I think the timing mats for the marathon was something like 13.5
- 52:13kilometers, 23 and a bit kilometers and then 32.
- 52:17Like they made no sense. They weren't at your 5K split so
- 52:20it's hard to follow people. Hard for athletes to even work
- 52:23out what pacing they're on. Like you don't even know.
- 52:25I remember when I did it, you don't even know what the turn
- 52:27around point. Like you don't even know when 21
- 52:29KS is because you know your garments freaked out when it's
- 52:32gone through the tunnel. So things like that could make
- 52:35the athlete experience so much better and even the the stream
- 52:39itself. Ron, did you have any
- 52:42reflections on that? Yeah, so I was going to say
- 52:45fastly, like, kudos to them for even putting a stream on.
- 52:48Like, not lots of races, but there are races where there
- 52:52isn't a stream. So like when you see that
- 52:54there's a stream available, more often than not you're glad about
- 52:57it. But then Dean flicks the link
- 52:59through and it's actually done by an external streaming company
- 53:03called Streamer. And I don't know where the
- 53:07whether the responsibility lies with the commentator or the race
- 53:11organizers in terms of passing this information over.
- 53:15But the commentator didn't mention, I don't think anyone in
- 53:19the races name full stop. And the camera for 2 1/2 hours
- 53:24was so not solely, but 99% of the time it was from a lead bike
- 53:30which had the camera attached to the back of it pointing toward
- 53:32the lead man. And throughout the race, he was
- 53:35referred to as the lead man. And after they went through the
- 53:39first time and Matt, the kind of live results updated.
- 53:42So if you put two and two together, you can figure out who
- 53:46said lead man was, and it was Mr. Paul Iyani.
- 53:50So at least if he didn't know who he was on the start line, he
- 53:53should have known who he was after the first time in Matt and
- 53:55then could have referred to him as Paul Iyani.
- 53:58And then when Matt Smith is passing him around, OK, he could
- 54:03have been like, and Matt Smith, if he didn't know he's from
- 54:07Perth, that's fine. Doesn't need to know exact
- 54:09details, but he could have at least gave these people names
- 54:13rather than the second man has passed the first man.
- 54:16And that Matt's bib number was 2 so it wouldn't have been hard to
- 54:20like work out who he was from a list.
- 54:23Like it wasn't like 10,500 like that you couldn't see like it
- 54:27was bib #2 and clearly no knowledge of who the athletes
- 54:32were. Like there's no color given
- 54:34other than and the extreme itself.
- 54:36Like the quality of the? Stream was really good and the
- 54:38coverage of. Earth.
- 54:40It looks great, yeah. It just you weren't really given
- 54:43much insight and you contrast that with what you just saw a
- 54:46few hours before that with Melbourne and it's chalk and
- 54:48cheese. And you feel sorry for the
- 54:51commentator in a way because you don't know what arrangements
- 54:54have been put in place that so that he's doing it by himself,
- 54:57but he's almost been hung out to dry and that he's had 2 1/2
- 55:00hours to fill, literally speaking to himself.
- 55:03But then you would think, naturally you'd think, oh, well,
- 55:05OK, I'll go and like kind of find out who I might be speaking
- 55:09about or looking at for 2 1/2 hours.
- 55:11So lots of the time the commentator was actually on mute
- 55:14and we're just looking at Paul Ronan, which is nice because the
- 55:18sun was out and Paul Perth's pretty scenic place.
- 55:21But yeah, it almost leaves you thinking like, what do is that
- 55:26what's the actual point of having that stream there for
- 55:28that race today because didn't add anything?
- 55:33Is that your application for the job next year?
- 55:37And now I knew that in saying this because I was thinking
- 55:40about it earlier because I knew wants to say it, but I also
- 55:42didn't want to be like, well, I mean, let's be honest, if if you
- 55:48did do it, you could probably provide more information than
- 55:51that. But there's probably like a lot
- 55:55of pressure and stuff what comes with it.
- 55:56So you can sympathize with them. In that sense, I fancy myself to
- 56:02do a better job than today. Yeah, exactly.
- 56:06Well, hopefully we're running again.
- 56:08Well, I. Mean I don't mind.
- 56:09Exactly. Playing biz.
- 56:10I did an hour on the elliptical earlier and it was nice, but I
- 56:14wouldn't mind actually running on the ground at some point.
- 56:18I feel like we could maybe have placed in it as well.
- 56:20There I say. Yeah, I did say to you, was your
- 56:24blood boiling looking at these results this morning?
- 56:27We're seeing all the cash go off in flames potential.
- 56:31Yes, look. At that, then get it out.
- 56:33For saw with saw for life if I just got this hip working.
- 56:37Some of the listener feedback which came in on that as well
- 56:39was that there's complaints about the heat or like the time
- 56:43of year in which the race is held.
- 56:45But in previous episodes I think we've acknowledged that because
- 56:50of the stadium finish, which is, I want to say iconic because of
- 56:55what happened in the world champs.
- 56:56But again, the way in which it's used in Perth, they only
- 57:00actually run about 20 meters in the stadium before they finish.
- 57:03Like they could change that so that the stadium has more of an
- 57:06effect and that the athletes get to run around it.
- 57:09But that's why the race is held when it is because they can't
- 57:13access the stadium during the AFL season.
- 57:16Although that then leads me to think, well, is the opportunity
- 57:20to. Host it or.
- 57:22Finish it elsewhere, seeing as they don't actually use the
- 57:25stadium for the finish properly. And like, don't you think if it
- 57:28finished on around Langley Park, like you could create a proper
- 57:32festival atmosphere down there and people would hang around
- 57:35afterwards and you could have all your different marquee
- 57:37stalls, etcetera, etcetera. Because they they pay for the
- 57:40road closures anyway. So that's not the issue.
- 57:43But yeah, there's plenty of food for thought around all these
- 57:45logistics. Not that we have absolutely any
- 57:48say in any of it, we're just hear the comments.
- 57:51I think just yeah, like, you know, lots of lots of good
- 57:55things, right? Like, I mean, they've obviously
- 57:57done a big job just to get all the road closures and get the
- 57:59funding and the buy in from the state government.
- 58:02But you could certainly make it better again.
- 58:06That was one thing when I was cycling round this morning.
- 58:08I was appreciating the amount of staff that they must have had to
- 58:11put in place for an event like this with all the road closures
- 58:15to kind of enforce it, all the traffic management, let alone
- 58:19any of the stuff that are actually involved in the race
- 58:21itself. Yeah.
- 58:22And for context, I think it was like the Wednesday before when
- 58:25they sort of announced some prize money back in 2023.
- 58:29So 2022 it didn't happen or maybe it happened in a lesser
- 58:32capacity, but like 2023 was the first year they got some prize
- 58:36money. Like the the the events I
- 58:38suppose is still pretty much, I think the first year at round
- 58:40was 2018 and they only did a half marathon.
- 58:42There was no prize money at all. Like they've what they've turned
- 58:45it into, like with the marathon, with funding and stuff like
- 58:49that, it's only getting bigger and better.
- 58:50So yeah, fingers crossed next year it's better again.
- 58:56And you raise a good point in that it's young and it would be
- 58:59easy for them to dwell on that and be like, well, we can never
- 59:03be a Melbourne or a Gold Coast. But then you should take
- 59:06inspiration from how Ballarat have kind of like founded and
- 59:09immediately ticked all the right boxes and been like aggressive
- 59:13in their approach to want to make everything like amazing for
- 59:17the athlete experience. Yeah, I think if they had some
- 59:21people in their team like that, they would it would be a bit
- 59:25transformational. But there's, yeah, they're not
- 59:28too far off, but there's a lot of, there's some, certainly some
- 59:31things that they could they could do that the guys at
- 59:34Ballarat Marathon do that would make the athlete experience,
- 59:38yeah, bigger and better. Albeit I'm not sure where
- 59:40they're at in terms of capacity, but but you would certainly
- 59:44would certainly be nice to see some more Interstate athletes
- 59:46like we saw this year coming across, wouldn't it?
- 59:50Yeah, for sure. And again, I think maybe that
- 59:53might be down to like some of the profiling and the marketing
- 59:57of the race in itself because they they've got the foundations
- 1:00:00in place and that they offer prize money and there is the
- 1:00:03potential for. Guys to come over and take some
- 1:00:06of this prize money, but maybe they're just not even aware of
- 1:00:08it in the first place. Because when you look at the
- 1:00:11social media it's good and it's informative in that it like
- 1:00:15almost answers a lot of questions that will come to your
- 1:00:18mind if you'd registered for a marathon like bib collection
- 1:00:21like get into the events like parking.
- 1:00:25But now it's the afternoon of the race and as per the social
- 1:00:30media, we still don't know who's won any of the events.
- 1:00:32So just some of the profile and then maybe switch the lens to
- 1:00:37focus on other things as well would help.
- 1:00:41I I just need to drop off fellas for a for another work
- 1:00:45commitment, but look forward to hearing the rest of the chat and
- 1:00:49reconnecting later on. Thanks mate, enjoy.
- 1:00:52See you guys. Good luck Dean.
- 1:00:54Trying to get that, but then so Owen, he's left us in the lurch
- 1:00:59with the Afflow's meets. I think we can move on from
- 1:01:02Perth now. So Afflow's is a female only
- 1:01:09track meet in Houston, New York City.
- 1:01:11I think it's only in its second year, which is maybe why it's
- 1:01:14somewhat unfamiliar to me. So there was a series of races,
- 1:01:19100 meters, 200 meters, 100 herdles, 400 meters, 800 meters,
- 1:01:23mile and a long jump. Then if you saw they were doing
- 1:01:27the qualifying for the long jump in Times Square.
- 1:01:29So that was a mad one. I seen like videos of it, unlike
- 1:01:33Instagram, but I didn't know it was that at low stain.
- 1:01:36I thought it was pretty random. I think it is pretty random.
- 1:01:42However, the women's 800 meters. Let's talk about the results.
- 1:01:45Firstly was won by Keely Hodgkinson 15653, Georgia Hunter
- 1:01:50Bell team mates 2nd 15833 and Shakira Maloney of What's that
- 1:01:57nationality VIN abbreviation? I haven't a notion.
- 1:02:04I also don't recognize the flag, but usually I'm pretty good with
- 1:02:07flags because they're fussy. Venezuela.
- 1:02:10That's VU. Yeah, that's got like a sky blue
- 1:02:14I think in it as well, isn't it? She was third in one 57.
- 1:02:18While she looked through that, the women's mile was won by no
- 1:02:21other than Faith Kipiagon in 4/17/78.
- 1:02:25And for context on that time, if you draw your minds back to
- 1:02:29Paris earlier this year, Faith was trying to break the four
- 1:02:33minute barrier in that mile. Goudafsa Guy was second from
- 1:02:36Ethiopia in 4/19/75 and Nikki Hilt of the US A was third and
- 1:02:434th 4th 32. Jeez, that was that's a big drop
- 1:02:47off from the 1st 243251. So some more information context
- 1:02:53around this event is that they've recently took on a new
- 1:02:56partner cash app. I think I'm familiar with them
- 1:02:59because they sponsor F1 onto it like the the blue, blue logo.
- 1:03:06And it's very clever of them because they've kind of marketed
- 1:03:09it as though obviously their payments provider and they're
- 1:03:13saying we'll make the prize money payment immediately to
- 1:03:17athletes and the prize money being 60 grand, 60,000 U.S.
- 1:03:20dollars. So it's a, it's that that's
- 1:03:22actually more than they win if they win the usual Diamond
- 1:03:26League. So it's good in that sense.
- 1:03:29And the the athletes were like double checking their account
- 1:03:32like after the race and they're like, yeah, 60 grand is in.
- 1:03:36So that's like such a good ploy from Cash App.
- 1:03:41There was also a 250,000 U.S. dollar bonus if anyone was to
- 1:03:46break the world record, which is outrageous.
- 1:03:50Unless you started your season incredibly late.
- 1:03:53Though I don't think anyone would have been breaking any
- 1:03:55world records like 3 or 4 weeks after the world champs when they
- 1:03:59would have been intending to peak.
- 1:04:02Shafiqa Maloney is from Saint Vincent which must be some
- 1:04:08remote island off somewhere Caribbean.
- 1:04:11The need for a female only track meet in the environment where
- 1:04:16athletics and running gender is viewed as entirely equal anyway.
- 1:04:21Think only perhaps tennis would be the other sport where like
- 1:04:24men and women the the gender is almost irrelevant and people
- 1:04:29just respect the ability and fully invest in like the the
- 1:04:33athletes themselves. And the prize money is the same.
- 1:04:36Everything is equal. And it seems to be moving in the
- 1:04:39right direction in the growth of public buy in viewership, fans
- 1:04:45prize monies are growing, sponsorships, endorsements, blah
- 1:04:48blah. So it seems to be on the right
- 1:04:50track naturally. And then to just stick a women's
- 1:04:53only meet in there. I don't really understand the
- 1:04:56purpose of it. Obviously it's for female
- 1:04:59empowerment and to lift up women's athletics.
- 1:05:01But what I'm trying to say is that maybe don't think it needs
- 1:05:05to be done. I don't know what what you think
- 1:05:08about that, Owen. Like, like I do agree.
- 1:05:12Like, and I'm all for like women empowerment and all this.
- 1:05:14But like, running is such an inclusive sport.
- 1:05:16Anyone can do it. Like if you break the any world
- 1:05:20record or if you win any race, the women and men are paid the
- 1:05:24same. Like it's really unique in that
- 1:05:26way. So yeah, it is.
- 1:05:28And I'm on the website here trying to find, like, what is
- 1:05:32like the purpose of this event? And it doesn't really say so.
- 1:05:39Yeah, I'm just not really sure about like, we might be missing
- 1:05:43something here. And that's why Dean is normally
- 1:05:45the man of reason. But yeah, I don't really see the
- 1:05:49point of it. Like, and I don't know, like
- 1:05:53what I'm what a male only me get the same reaction.
- 1:05:56I'm not. I don't know.
- 1:05:57But yeah, like, I love it. And I love the way like this is
- 1:06:01a more like achievable goal, like Grand Slam was like paying
- 1:06:05like ridiculous amount of money, whereas this one, it's actually
- 1:06:08reasonable and it's actually paying the athletes well.
- 1:06:11So like, I love the idea of this.
- 1:06:13But yeah, I'm sort of with you on this one, right?
- 1:06:16And to be yeah, if they don't a male only one, I would look at
- 1:06:19it the same way. And I'll be like, what the hell
- 1:06:21is the point of that? Like, so if you almost remove
- 1:06:24the fear of being scared of offending people because
- 1:06:27obviously it's a bit of a touchy subject like gender, and you
- 1:06:30just say, well, the threw in a male only track me.
- 1:06:34So you'd be like, what's the point?
- 1:06:35Like you like seeing a man's race, then a woman's race, a
- 1:06:38man's race, then a woman's race. You like seeing all these
- 1:06:41athletes on the same day. It just doesn't make much sense
- 1:06:44because I haven't really engaged with it or didn't like have much
- 1:06:48incentives to get up and watch it.
- 1:06:51And I think that's because only being women kind of misses the
- 1:06:54point of like athletics. Yeah, I know that this they
- 1:06:58still have the star names like Keely's there, Faith, KP,
- 1:07:01Aegon's there. But sure, it's perfect for
- 1:07:03Keeley. Like this probably best case
- 1:07:05scenario, like she was rushing to peak for the world's and like
- 1:07:10she obviously obviously would have liked a longer season.
- 1:07:13So this way she actually gets another race and she gets like a
- 1:07:16shit load of money. So she's laughing.
- 1:07:18OK, I feel like we've maybe done ourselves justice in in the
- 1:07:23opinion, but I will end by saying like I'm very open to
- 1:07:27anyone providing more enlightenment as to like the
- 1:07:30actual purpose or why why the needs to be women's only meets
- 1:07:34because if there's a reason and I'm just missing it, then that's
- 1:07:38fine. Educate me.
- 1:07:40Absolutely. Moving on.
- 1:07:44Well. Yeah, I'll leave it there.
- 1:07:47Moving on from that, we now reach the news items Fem Cabal
- 1:07:54has announced via a dramatic YouTube clip, which is pretty
- 1:07:58cool that she's moving up from the 400 Herdles to the 800,
- 1:08:02which adds another dynamic to the clearly already very
- 1:08:07interesting women's 800 meters, given that Keely failed to win
- 1:08:11it. I think this is such good for
- 1:08:12the sport. Like, I feel like I love when at
- 1:08:16least it is like they feel like they've completed an event and
- 1:08:20want a new child. Like Fem Cabal could easily just
- 1:08:23do the 400 meter hurdles for the next like four or five years and
- 1:08:27win every single race. Like it's sort of like what you
- 1:08:30love about runners and athletes is like they're never satisfied.
- 1:08:34So like, she's going for a completely different night.
- 1:08:37Fair enough. Like you sort of need a good
- 1:08:39engine to do the 400 meter hurdles.
- 1:08:42And so, yeah, like, it's going to make it so much more
- 1:08:46interesting to see her lining up against Keeley and George,
- 1:08:51Hunter Bell and Mary Moore. And yeah, it's a lover.
- 1:08:55She's, like, so likable as well, isn't she?
- 1:08:58Like, you would fully get behind them.
- 1:09:00Wanted to do well, Yeah, yeah. She's such like a person and
- 1:09:06like, feel and like she, I feel like sitting with luck on her
- 1:09:09own, like she. Fair enough.
- 1:09:11She would have. She's just so far ahead of
- 1:09:13everyone in the 400 meter hurdles.
- 1:09:15And she then moved on to a new challenge and so opens up the
- 1:09:19door for like another athlete in the 400 mirror hurdles to sort
- 1:09:23of like compete and yeah, more for it.
- 1:09:27That's a good point. To be fair, maybe because we're
- 1:09:30not short distance runners ourselves, we don't understand
- 1:09:34the natural progression. But you know, the way people go
- 1:09:37from like 15 to 5K to 10K to the roads, etcetera.
- 1:09:40Or maybe this is a new thing which she's experimenting and a
- 1:09:44new natural progression for the short distance people.
- 1:09:48And like, I guarantee you she will run an unbelievable 800
- 1:09:51meters as well. Like she'll be near the pointy
- 1:09:54end of all these events. Yeah.
- 1:09:56For K Femka exciting another item on the news list.
- 1:10:03In fact, you want to give us some training, switch it off a
- 1:10:05bit. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:07So this would have been my, my last sort of relatively large
- 1:10:12week. And because I do, there's this
- 1:10:14umm, awesome open competition, cross country competition on umm
- 1:10:18next Sunday in Dublin. So umm, it's basically like a, a
- 1:10:22warm up for nationals. So a lot of people like I know
- 1:10:26Athletics Ireland had this high performance running squad and
- 1:10:29it's all like the best distance runners in Ireland.
- 1:10:31They were all brought to umm fun for MO for the last couple of
- 1:10:34weeks. So all of them have been out
- 1:10:36there training. So now they'll all come home for
- 1:10:39UMM, It's basically the warm up for nationals.
- 1:10:42So nationals is the 23rd November.
- 1:10:44And so sort of like an indicator of like where you're at.
- 1:10:47And I think it goes towards points for UMM, like generally
- 1:10:52cross country, you can count that towards like a 10K results
- 1:10:54or something like that. I think I'm probably talking to
- 1:10:57Maris there. But umm, right.
- 1:10:59So is that local to you then? And hots like 20 minutes 25
- 1:11:04minutes away. That's good.
- 1:11:05Yeah, I'm lucky where I'm eleven, like I'm sort of
- 1:11:08central. So a lot of the big races are in
- 1:11:11Dublin now for nationals is up in Derry.
- 1:11:13So that's like in Northern Ireland.
- 1:11:15So and that'll be like 2 1/2 hours away.
- 1:11:17So I'll stay the night up there because it's not really advised
- 1:11:20that you travel 2 1/2 hours and then try and run a race.
- 1:11:23But distance. So cross country has moved down
- 1:11:26the distance. So it's now 7.5 K.
- 1:11:30So it used to be 10. So, umm, now like the Europeans
- 1:11:34is, I think the Europeans is some mad distance like 7000 like
- 1:11:37490 meters or something crazy like that.
- 1:11:40But I feel like it suits like the fast guys more like cross
- 1:11:43country is normally known as like a hard, long gritty grind.
- 1:11:47Whereas yeah, so it's 7 1/2 K won't suit me as much, but I am
- 1:11:51yeah. I don't know why they changed
- 1:11:52that. Brings a few more young chickens
- 1:11:55into it maybe. Exactly.
- 1:11:57So starting this week started on the 6th.
- 1:12:00I'm just trying to get it. Sorry.
- 1:12:01So Monday morning I did 45 minutes easy in the morning and
- 1:12:14with then some strides at the end and then just 45 minutes
- 1:12:18easy double in the evening. So just basically flushing the
- 1:12:21legs out from from the from the Sunday and Tuesday.
- 1:12:27Tuesday was sort of like my last sort of big crack session, let's
- 1:12:33say towards the race. And so I don't 45 minutes easy
- 1:12:36in the morning and then the evening I had eight by one K
- 1:12:42around like my local gravel track at roughly around 5K pace
- 1:12:47and off 90 seconds. What are they coming out as?
- 1:12:52And so not relevant because the gravel the ground no, so they
- 1:12:56were in and around. I'd say the average that like
- 1:12:59255 and the last three were I tried to push it on the 6th,
- 1:13:09survive on the 7th wrap and then push it again on the 8th.
- 1:13:13So it was 253-250-5247. So yeah, I feel like my fitness
- 1:13:21is sort of has improved recently.
- 1:13:23So it's just trying to stay healthy, which is usually
- 1:13:27wearing on the gravel. I am Cooper tears favorite the
- 1:13:31well streetfly 2. Oh yeah, because you'd just
- 1:13:35recently put purchase them or do were you influenced?
- 1:13:39No, I bought the man for like when I came home because I
- 1:13:41didn't want like a super shoe because I wasn't planning on
- 1:13:45racing like longer stuff. So and I don't like the big soft
- 1:13:49soles, like I just feel like it doesn't because you wore it for
- 1:13:53that road 10K, didn't you? Yeah, 10 mile.
- 1:13:56So yeah, I am the street fly and yeah, I like it.
- 1:14:02I feel like for them sort of track sessions, it's like a
- 1:14:04racing flat. So yeah, it's lovely.
- 1:14:08It's a nice shoe responsive. And Wednesday then like after
- 1:14:14the session I was pretty tired. So Wednesday I just done 60
- 1:14:19minutes on the bike in the morning and then in the evening
- 1:14:22I do my circus class. Thursday was sort of a longer
- 1:14:27run, so I'd done this all as one big massive chunk.
- 1:14:31So 15 minutes warm up, then 20 minutes at like the higher end
- 1:14:36of threshold and five minute jog, then 15 minutes at the
- 1:14:41higher end of threshold and then a 15 minute jog.
- 1:14:47So for the ONS there I'm hitting, I'm trying to hit
- 1:14:50around 3:20. So yes, just trying to get more
- 1:14:57just at that higher end to get my legs like dealing with that
- 1:15:00sort of more lactic. Yeah, because they're longer
- 1:15:03reps as well, aren't they? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:05And I feel like my legs do get flooded.
- 1:15:07So just try and get them dealing with it because cross country
- 1:15:10will sort of it's like a longer grind Friday rest day.
- 1:15:14And I get in my weekly massage now, which I feel like is a game
- 1:15:18changer. Like, I know everyone isn't
- 1:15:19fortunate enough to be in that situation, but my physio, David
- 1:15:23Ivers at them a boy sports therapy.
- 1:15:26He's really looking after me so good.
- 1:15:27I'm like, if I do anything here now in the next couple of
- 1:15:31months, years, a lot of it will be down to him.
- 1:15:34Just keep me, right. So, yeah, shout out to Dave.
- 1:15:37Did the just think the Cam Levin's chat And well, I know
- 1:15:41you already knew about the massage stuff because it's a
- 1:15:44driven series, but was that like a timely reminder for you?
- 1:15:48Yeah, it really like we only have such a like a short window
- 1:15:51in this sport and to like give it your all and I'm like, I may
- 1:15:56as well just go all in two feet. Like, yeah, basically like just
- 1:16:01try and give it your all and just see what I can do
- 1:16:05basically. So if a massage is just that
- 1:16:07little bit that will it's sort of like in my week, it's like a
- 1:16:09reset button. So if I can get to Friday and
- 1:16:11I'm all right, Friday's a reset button and then I'm fresh again
- 1:16:14for like the weekend. And yeah, so yeah, because the
- 1:16:18weekend often like as full time workers as well, that's where
- 1:16:22you get a lot of your high quality or big volume comes in,
- 1:16:25doesn't it? So if you're able to then hit
- 1:16:27that a little bit fresher, it's just compounding your gains.
- 1:16:31Yeah. So I'm like, and I do like
- 1:16:34majority of my mileage on the weekend.
- 1:16:37So really I can like put the feet up during the day of less
- 1:16:41stress not working. So, yeah, so the Friday reset is
- 1:16:46is really, really, really important.
- 1:16:48And Saturday then, which was yesterday, I had hills, so 15
- 1:16:52minute warm up. And then same as last Saturday,
- 1:16:552 sets of 6 by 200 mirror hills, drawback recovery.
- 1:17:00And like hills just don't get easier.
- 1:17:06This was on the slight tougher gradient.
- 1:17:07So I was doing them all around like 34 seconds.
- 1:17:10But yeah, you just, they just fill your legs with junk and
- 1:17:16it's just not a nice feeling. And like between these have a 5
- 1:17:19minute jog between the sets. So that sort of flushes some of
- 1:17:23it out. But yeah, it's just, it's, it's
- 1:17:25rough. And actually coming on that
- 1:17:27Thursday run, I am, I nearly got hit by a van.
- 1:17:32So, umm, like it's pitch black and it's like a 25 minute jog to
- 1:17:37like like a sort of a village close to me that has lights lit
- 1:17:42up around the streets. So I normally jog there during
- 1:17:45my session and jog back home. But yeah, so and I like have a
- 1:17:50big massive like light on my head and I don't know, like
- 1:17:53people are just still half sleep at that hour in the morning.
- 1:17:56So he was like driving towards me and I like, I was like, OK,
- 1:17:59he's not really seeing me. So like half in the ditch.
- 1:18:02And then like at the last minute he like swerved out.
- 1:18:04So I put in the Irish part of the the clubhouse.
- 1:18:08Umm, any recommendations for like a high vis sort of like
- 1:18:11probably should be round one, but my big light is like if you
- 1:18:14look into the light straight ahead, like your eyes hurt like
- 1:18:16it's so, so bright. Umm, So yeah, I'm after ordering
- 1:18:21like a high vis sort of thing to wear.
- 1:18:25Umm, sure, sort sort of got one for you.
- 1:18:27Yeah. So if you're listening, yeah,
- 1:18:33that was my third yeah. So the treadmill isn't going to
- 1:18:35work out this year, so I'll just be well lit up and yeah, I'm
- 1:18:39probably going to get a gym membership or something come
- 1:18:42like when I, when the roads get like icy and I'll like just
- 1:18:45because you don't want to slip and like nail yourself.
- 1:18:47So how many more sort of like layers and clothes in your head
- 1:18:53now in the morning and at the minute.
- 1:18:55So it's actually not too bad at the moment, like 6° is cold for
- 1:18:59all them Aussie listeners, but it's actually like it's
- 1:19:02manageable here. So normally I just wear like a
- 1:19:05long sleeve T-shirt and like a normal T-shirt.
- 1:19:08And if I warm up, I like to like rogue up when I'm warm, when I'm
- 1:19:13warming up. So I like wear tracks bombs,
- 1:19:15like a jacket or something and then I just throw it off and
- 1:19:18throw it into a ditch. And that's the only good thing
- 1:19:20about where I live. Pardon any hat and gloves,
- 1:19:24gloves or I wear the arm sleeves because I've, umm, really bad
- 1:19:28circulation. Like my hands get like blue.
- 1:19:31I think I've borderline renoids like the circulation to my hands
- 1:19:35and toes is so bad. So yeah, I do wear gloves and
- 1:19:38all, but like it's not cold yet. Like it will get like 1 degree,
- 1:19:440° -, 1° so, and that's all ahead of me.
- 1:19:48So yeah, not looking forward to that.
- 1:19:50But at the moment it's, umm, it's bearable and I think you're
- 1:19:54better off being too warmed and too cold and like a little thing
- 1:19:58I do. So like after any like session,
- 1:20:00I just bring a spare T-shirt. So I'm not like cooling down and
- 1:20:03like a sweaty or wet T-shirt. It's just a little like 1
- 1:20:07percenter just because it's not good like cool down and like wet
- 1:20:09clothes. So I'm just to prevent me again,
- 1:20:13like sick. Well, in my head that's what I'm
- 1:20:15doing. So that evening I just get out
- 1:20:20for a four or five minute jog as well.
- 1:20:21It's probably just to shake out the the junk from the hills.
- 1:20:24And now later today I've got 90 minutes, so my last long run and
- 1:20:28the last 20 minutes is at that higher end of of my threshold.
- 1:20:35So yeah, All in all, it will be, well I've 92 kilometers done
- 1:20:40now. I'll probably do another 20.
- 1:20:43So 100 and 1012 odd kilometers for the week, which is umm, it's
- 1:20:48not too bad. Can't wait for next week.
- 1:20:50Like on my taper week, I only have like one run a day.
- 1:20:53So I'm looking forward to a little bit of a lion and then
- 1:20:57racing on Sunday, see where I'm at.
- 1:20:59It's exciting. Will you just will you do a shoe
- 1:21:02change in your run today or just one pair?
- 1:21:05I'll do one pair. I'll do one pair and I really
- 1:21:08like like the shoe broke on me like straight away.
- 1:21:12But I love the Puma Velocity V4 because really light Poppy one,
- 1:21:18I feel like I can get moving in it, but like the actual Puma
- 1:21:21logo I wore for like the first run and I started coming off and
- 1:21:26so I'm just wearing it when it's like flapping.
- 1:21:29But I do love that shoe. I just wish it was better made.
- 1:21:35I probably just got unlucky with like the actual shoe, like a
- 1:21:38word of Romero's from my last week's long run.
- 1:21:41And like, I really don't feel like this is probably an
- 1:21:46unpopular opinion, but like don't make they do make a
- 1:21:49difference, but it's minor. I think we're so fixated on like
- 1:21:55super shoes, super shoes, super shoes.
- 1:21:57Whereas if you just like go and get rolling like.
- 1:22:03Just. Get out and do it like what was
- 1:22:04my last week's Sunday One SEC especially I think like in a
- 1:22:11session, you can afford to have the less aggressive or like less
- 1:22:17perform and shoe on because you can almost then look at your
- 1:22:20obsession and be like, oh, well, like I didn't have me racing
- 1:22:23shoes on. But then immediately in a race
- 1:22:26when you've got your racing shoes on, you're like getting
- 1:22:28paranoid like, oh, but I like I've got ticked all these boxes
- 1:22:32and I'm doing all these one percenters like I should be 5
- 1:22:34seconds. OK, quicker.
- 1:22:35But it doesn't always translate to giving you that much of an
- 1:22:39effect. No, like, yeah, yeah, I'm not a
- 1:22:44big like I love the shoes and all, but I think people are too
- 1:22:47fixated on them as well. Umm, but yeah, it's like I think
- 1:22:52my Sunday, last Sunday, I don't like 25 odd K and the average
- 1:22:55place is like 445 or something and a pair of Romero's and like
- 1:22:59I know like I'm probably like I am probably the fitest I've ever
- 1:23:03been. But yeah, I think shoes, I don't
- 1:23:07know, I feel like we're in a bit of an A market and whirlwind,
- 1:23:13like all the brands have got us exactly where they want us.
- 1:23:15And like we just, we haven't even got time to like actually
- 1:23:18think about what we're doing. We're just buying this shoe
- 1:23:20because it's released by the next shoes it's released on.
- 1:23:22Nike have done one, Adidas have done one.
- 1:23:24And then in a few years, once it all settles down, we'll like
- 1:23:27look back on this period maybe and be like fucking hell, like
- 1:23:30what we're playing out there. Just like buying all these shoes
- 1:23:33because they said they were good.
- 1:23:34Like the shoes can add like a few seconds like you're, but
- 1:23:40like that's a like a little percent.
- 1:23:42Whereas if you do the training and get the recovery, that is
- 1:23:45like the big percentages where you can gain from like the shoes
- 1:23:49are the last thing you think of. Like doing the training and
- 1:23:52getting the recovery is the main, like 90, like 5 percent,
- 1:23:5799 more 98% of what you can control and like has the most
- 1:24:03benefit. It's like the shoes are the last
- 1:24:05little sighting. That was like the icing on the
- 1:24:07cake. But I think if people just need
- 1:24:09to concentrate more on like recovering from the training and
- 1:24:12they'd see more benefits than wearing a super shoe that really
- 1:24:17like, you've probably. Yeah, I don't know, like if you
- 1:24:20rewind into like the ACS or the 9, there's no doubt there's all
- 1:24:24the the best runners then running their easy shoes into
- 1:24:27like the absolute ground, like the foam falling apart, peeling
- 1:24:32away and like the big two big toe poking through the floor of
- 1:24:35the shoe before they change it and stuff.
- 1:24:37Yeah, we've probably gone too far a little bit, haven't we?
- 1:24:41Wait, my coach is my coach's wife.
- 1:24:45Her father ran at the 1972 Olympics, right?
- 1:24:52So this is way before super shoes here on like 2.
- 1:24:55He ran a PB of 216, right? Like that is pre super shoe, pre
- 1:25:01nutrition shit and all that. Like just do the training and
- 1:25:05you will see like you can now like love to think like what
- 1:25:08could he have run like with nutrition with super shoes?
- 1:25:12Like God only knows, but I'm like he was still able to run
- 1:25:15216. None of that stuff like the
- 1:25:19training is the big, the big controllable that you can get
- 1:25:23the most out of. And he'd probably put like 300
- 1:25:26miles into the shoes that he wore to race that 260.
- 1:25:30Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:25:31Literally. So, yeah.
- 1:25:33Super shoes. Overrated, huh?
- 1:25:35Probably what's important to have is like a a small rotation
- 1:25:39in that you can go to like 234 different pair of shoes
- 1:25:44throughout the week and you can use them in the like right
- 1:25:47intended workouts, whether it's like recovery or you want to do
- 1:25:50a bit of faster stuff or whatever.
- 1:25:52But I think all the constant colourway upgrades and fucking
- 1:25:57one mil stack height upgrades and all this madness is a little
- 1:26:02bit crazy. Like I think for the average
- 1:26:04person, like I feel like we are like abnormal.
- 1:26:08We're at the weird end of the sport.
- 1:26:09But like for the average person, 2 pairs of shoes and an easy
- 1:26:12shoe and a fast shoe. And then if you want to have a
- 1:26:15racing shoe with a cabin plate, but you do not need the cabin
- 1:26:17plate majority an easy shoe and a fast shoe rotate between them.
- 1:26:22It stops you getting injured, it stops your legs going stale from
- 1:26:24running in one pair of shoes. And yeah, that's the way I'd be
- 1:26:28thinking about like, I think I've got way too many.
- 1:26:30I've got like 8 pairs of shoes. Umm, so like that's on the like,
- 1:26:37you don't need that many, let's be real.
- 1:26:39So umm oh, actually, oh, got lucky at last yesterday morning
- 1:26:43I looked normally when I get out of bed, I'll just look at the
- 1:26:45phone and like you get e-mail. I'm on to get marketing emails
- 1:26:48from like sports director. That's like in Ireland, that's
- 1:26:52when the shoe shops are like it'd be like rabble or something
- 1:26:55like that. And when the Sports Direct and I
- 1:26:57seen them like an end of summer sale and I went on and then I
- 1:27:02always just like filter straight to my shoe size.
- 1:27:04So like size 9 UK and then didn't they have a pair of Nike
- 1:27:08Structures so that Nike structure 25 if released 26.
- 1:27:11So the old version of Nike structure my size for 65 year
- 1:27:15old. So I was like you're going
- 1:27:21straight in my basket. They're on the way to Tara.
- 1:27:25They are on the way to Tara, yeah.
- 1:27:27So I'll hopefully have them for my little training camp coming
- 1:27:30up in a while. So yeah, I'm literally just
- 1:27:32going to Chuck them away. I don't really need them at the
- 1:27:34moment, but I love the shoe. There's absolutely no difference
- 1:27:39between the 26 and the 25. Like you could spend €130 on the
- 1:27:4426 and people probably would, but this is like a black and
- 1:27:47white pair of the 25. Exact same function.
- 1:27:51But yeah, so when I seen that for £65, I was like, yeah,
- 1:27:54you're coming home with me. Well, this is the other part as
- 1:27:57well. Another angle on that shoe
- 1:27:59stuff, Right? So there's probably never been a
- 1:28:02shoe that's been released where when it's released, there's like
- 1:28:07a bit of a scramble for sizes like the create FOMO.
- 1:28:10Like you want it, you might get lucky in a verse of commas and
- 1:28:13get it. And then six months later when
- 1:28:17the upgrade or the next version is released, the shoe that you
- 1:28:21were scrambling for and felt like you absolutely needed is
- 1:28:24then in the outlets on sale. The shoe is still the same shoe
- 1:28:28that it was six months ago. Like, what are we missing out on
- 1:28:31here? Yeah.
- 1:28:33And I think Nike are doing it so well now with the like the
- 1:28:38standard version, that plus and the premium, they've their
- 1:28:43tiered system. So like, like, fair enough.
- 1:28:47Like the shoe might be like a little bit more softer, have
- 1:28:50another air bubble. But for the consumer, like
- 1:28:52they're like, OK, I need this premium version like that from
- 1:28:56Mero Premium with the two air bubbles.
- 1:28:57I'd actually love to try it on and just go for a run, but
- 1:29:01because it looks crazy, but like, it's just something you
- 1:29:04don't really need. Yeah, and what they, what
- 1:29:09they're doing so well, they're fucking clever bastards is aware
- 1:29:13all about like having more access and visibility to like
- 1:29:16the elites and the pros and like what they're doing and how they
- 1:29:18live, they live their lives like fucking love all that stuff.
- 1:29:23But the brands are using that to then put it in front of your
- 1:29:26average runner. And we were like, picture your
- 1:29:31average park runner. They then feel like they relate
- 1:29:34to that runner and want to act how they act when in reality,
- 1:29:38the two lives are just 1,000,000 miles apart.
- 1:29:40And all these things that the pro do like don't really apply
- 1:29:44or need to apply to your person who's trying to run a 10 KPB.
- 1:29:50Yeah, exactly. Like, yeah.
- 1:29:52And like they, I feel like Nike have really pushed this from our
- 1:29:56premium by getting like the elite athletes to talk about it.
- 1:30:00Like you even see Seth O'Donnell, he's posted a video.
- 1:30:04I feel that is something Seth would never wear, but he's
- 1:30:07posted a video of him like talking about it and like
- 1:30:10wearing it and to prepare. It's such a unique looking shoe.
- 1:30:13Like it looks really cool. But I'd love to our easy double
- 1:30:16shoe correspondent Liam Stocky love to get him his opinion on
- 1:30:20all this sort of stuff. Yeah, that that's the only
- 1:30:23problem with all the all this content and material now Like
- 1:30:27it's hard to actually decipher what is authentic and what is
- 1:30:32like someone just being paid to give a good review of.
- 1:30:36Yeah, exactly. Like you don't know boss.
- 1:30:40Yeah, like there's so many like all the brands are such on a
- 1:30:42level playing field. It's it's it's sort of really
- 1:30:46like no, it's not sort of it is really confusing about what to
- 1:30:49buy like what you need. What's the difference between
- 1:30:51this shoe that shoe? The market is so flooded, but
- 1:30:54they must be making so much money.
- 1:30:56I wonder what's sore bring out a shoe wouldn't be able to afford
- 1:31:00it. Well, the shoe the shoe might be
- 1:31:02cheaper than the T-shirt with the way they're going to
- 1:31:05probably be like 10 grams light. Wouldn't you love to be in on
- 1:31:10like a board meeting around like strategy from one of these
- 1:31:13brands about like how they deliver these things to the
- 1:31:17consumer? Like what are they actually
- 1:31:18thinking about in terms of like consumer behavior and how do
- 1:31:22they manipulate us? We're probably aware of like 1%
- 1:31:26of it and we don't have an idea of what's going on.
- 1:31:28Like what they're saying behind the behind the closed doors.
- 1:31:32They're looking at my bank accounts and probably know how
- 1:31:35much I'm going to give them before I even get paid.
- 1:31:38We're suckers, especially runners.
- 1:31:39Like we just, I don't know, it's something like we just need that
- 1:31:43running shoe. Like I sort of have to hold
- 1:31:45myself back from buying like I want that AM.
- 1:31:48There's like an on training shoe.
- 1:31:51I forget what it's like the on zone Alfie man Torp raves about
- 1:31:55it and it's got like this Caribbean like wedge in the
- 1:31:58middle of it. But yeah, like I really, really
- 1:32:00want it. But then I'm trying to like call
- 1:32:01myself back saying, oh, and you really don't need this shoe.
- 1:32:04Like just chill. You've got loads of shoes.
- 1:32:07So yeah, I really enjoyed that shoe talk.
- 1:32:13Just to finish your training. We wait training week with the
- 1:32:17race next weekend. How can you expect to go there
- 1:32:20in terms of like the field depth?
- 1:32:22And does it mean anything for like qualifying for the
- 1:32:25nationals or anything like that? It means it's totally separate.
- 1:32:29So it means nothing towards like nationals, but it will be pretty
- 1:32:32deep. I'm expecting it to be pretty
- 1:32:34deep because there's like there's actually prize money
- 1:32:38Umm, so which is weird for cross country race cross country, umm,
- 1:32:41but with nationals top five qualify for the Europeans in in
- 1:32:46Portugal. So like that's where am I rich,
- 1:32:50But umm, it'll just be interesting to see like how far
- 1:32:53away I am from like that top group and because cross country
- 1:32:57sort of levels of playing field. So with the 5K nationals, like I
- 1:33:00was like a good minute behind the best.
- 1:33:02So, umm, it'll be interesting to see how far away I am from them
- 1:33:05on the grass when it should make the, it should make the playing
- 1:33:11field a little bit more level. So yeah, it will be really
- 1:33:14exciting. Well, especially on a year like
- 1:33:18this where there's a, a world cross country coming up.
- 1:33:21Because when I was in the agenda here, we've got all sorts on the
- 1:33:25cross country selection process and stuff.
- 1:33:27I don't know if we'll go into it properly now, but it means that
- 1:33:31essentially at the Irish National Cross, everyone is
- 1:33:35going to be there because they have the incentivized by
- 1:33:38qualifying for Europeans, which then will no doubt feed the
- 1:33:42qualifying for worlds. And all this is like nationals
- 1:33:47is when end of October or in November?
- 1:33:50The nationals is the 3rd of November.
- 1:33:53Yeah, OK. Because then the Europeans in
- 1:33:56Portugal like you mentioned is the end 14th of December,
- 1:34:00mid-december. Yeah, Mid-december, I think for
- 1:34:04him, us, the last World cross country was in was somewhere in
- 1:34:09Europe because Ireland didn't send anyone to the one in
- 1:34:14Australia. Did they know?
- 1:34:16No. So I think like if it's a
- 1:34:19reasonable distance, they might send them.
- 1:34:20So where's this next 10 Tallahassee in Florida.
- 1:34:24So yeah, it's a bit, I don't know if I will send to people
- 1:34:27because I know on that weekend is the same weekend as the
- 1:34:29Valencia 10K. So like I don't know if people
- 1:34:36would rather go to Valencia, get a super fast 10K time or go to
- 1:34:42like a world cross country in Tallahassee.
- 1:34:45Like is it warm over there at that time?
- 1:34:49I don't know, no idea. But yeah, it'd be interesting.
- 1:34:54Well, whilst we're here then we can talk about it briefly, the
- 1:34:57world cross country coming up in January in Florida and obviously
- 1:35:01we can look at Australia's selection, GB selection and
- 1:35:04island selection. So Australia have just announced
- 1:35:07their nationals, which is the 28th of November on a Friday
- 1:35:11night, Friday night on the lights in Stromlo, on the
- 1:35:15pristine golf course there that they run on.
- 1:35:17So there's a 10K distance from men and women, an 8K distance
- 1:35:22for the under 20 men, 6K for under 20 women.
- 1:35:25In terms of that race, the top 6 make up notice.
- 1:35:32That's it for the team. If Australia or whichever nation
- 1:35:36choose to send a full team to Worlds, it's an individual event
- 1:35:40as well as a team event. So Ireland will be representing
- 1:35:43the team and the individual represents themselves, tries to
- 1:35:45finish as high up as they can. And for the team score, you can
- 1:35:49send six people to represent and to race, but only the top four
- 1:35:53of that team count towards the team score.
- 1:35:56So two people will run but not actually count towards the team
- 1:35:59score, whoever finishes the lowest 2.
- 1:36:02So for Australia's qualification for that team, obviously there's
- 1:36:06six on the team and they've confirmed that only the top 2
- 1:36:10from these nationals in Canberra and Stromlo will be
- 1:36:13automatically selected for the team.
- 1:36:16Which then leaves all the subjectivity and almost
- 1:36:20different opinions to select the remaining four people, which I
- 1:36:26don't know why they do that really.
- 1:36:27This is like almost like very plain, you've got a nationals
- 1:36:34and you've got the race that it's being intended for like a
- 1:36:38month later. It's not an Olympic team, it's
- 1:36:41not a world championship team. So you can maybe just be a bit
- 1:36:44more strict with the process and be like, hey, top six at
- 1:36:47nationals, go to worlds in January, Bob's your Uncle Don.
- 1:36:51But there's there's four places for the selectors to exercise
- 1:36:56their power of choice and decision.
- 1:36:58So I've made a bit of a list of people who are in those spots
- 1:37:01and who aren't in those spots as it stands.
- 1:37:03And we can maybe follow this as it unfolds because at the minute
- 1:37:06the top 2 is qualification window which is again been
- 1:37:10outlined as only starting on the 1st of May this year, which is
- 1:37:15going to be like a six month window to get your 10K time
- 1:37:21which usually the window is 12 to 18 months.
- 1:37:23So this. List as it is now.
- 1:37:26I'm sure isn't reflective of the actual best in order of the top
- 1:37:296K runners. So the that qualification period
- 1:37:34started on the 1st of May. Yeah.
- 1:37:36So how many 10 KS is there between in this six months?
- 1:37:40Like, absolutely. Not many at all.
- 1:37:44Well, that's it. And it makes me think didn't
- 1:37:47have the insight to do the research on this.
- 1:37:49But like, has that date been set deliberately?
- 1:37:51Because maybe like a couple of people's times were in March or
- 1:37:55in February. So like put drawing the line
- 1:37:57there may discount them. You'd hope not.
- 1:38:01But Izzy's run five since then. By the way, has she OK?
- 1:38:06Nevermind. Yeah.
- 1:38:11So we'll follow that journey as it goes.
- 1:38:12The GB selection is a little bit different.
- 1:38:15They don't have any formal trials and what they do have is
- 1:38:18the Liverpool cross country challenge in November and that
- 1:38:23is being used to build the team for Europeans as Owen just
- 1:38:27mentioned. And then placements or finishing
- 1:38:31Europeans is being used for the world selection.
- 1:38:34But again, similar to Australia almost in that there's a lot of
- 1:38:38complexity and almost like get out clauses rather than just
- 1:38:42saying whoever finishes in these positions will go.
- 1:38:45And there is also like the blatant statement of at all
- 1:38:49times, the panel's consideration for selection will be based on
- 1:38:52the meeting perform, meeting the performance objectives of the
- 1:38:55championships, not on filling event places.
- 1:38:59The panel is not obliged to fill all places.
- 1:39:01So no doubt there that is an early warning sign that GB will
- 1:39:06not be sending a full team over to America.
- 1:39:09Surprise, surprise, what they will be doing, as they
- 1:39:11confirmed, is sending a full team down the road to Birmingham
- 1:39:14for Europeans next summer. It's a bit cheaper, isn't it?
- 1:39:18You might think so. Come here with the Liverpool.
- 1:39:22Could I go across the pond and. Run that Liverpool.
- 1:39:26Cross country challenge or is this strictly like UK club?
- 1:39:29Yeah, and I think I think you can.
- 1:39:31OK. Yeah, it's it's held in Sefton
- 1:39:35Park and it's very subjective as to the weather leading up to it,
- 1:39:38whether it's a shit show or it could even be like frozen over.
- 1:39:41Obviously same with yourself, I guess.
- 1:39:44Is them that close to you? So Sefton parks, like just on
- 1:39:48the perimeter of the city. So, yeah, probably taken me like
- 1:39:5220 minutes to drive there, not from Australia, but from mine.
- 1:39:56So if I used to possibly go over and run that, there's a there's
- 1:39:59a bed for me in Wellesley, is there Wallasey?
- 1:40:03Yeah. Joanna to make you a cup of tea
- 1:40:06and some toast, I'm sure. Yeah, I'll keep that in mind.
- 1:40:10Yeah. No, you should do.
- 1:40:11Well, even some of the lads from the.
- 1:40:14Club that I'm a part. Of no.
- 1:40:15Doubt with them. Put you up and host you and then
- 1:40:18take you over there. You could all race together for
- 1:40:21some real cross country, huh? I'll I'm not going to train a
- 1:40:24week. I bought a new bike this week
- 1:40:26though. I've upgraded from the fucking
- 1:40:28gravel machine to now some absolute Rd. beasts.
- 1:40:31So properly and into the cyclist life.
- 1:40:34Yeah. What type is that?
- 1:40:36Because I know Tommy Cross was selling on a pretty a road bike
- 1:40:39for a pretty hefty price and I know they can be more expensive
- 1:40:44than cars. So have you have you cashed out
- 1:40:46on this one or is it a reasonable price?
- 1:40:50Well, the first one that I bought was 1100.
- 1:40:53Dollars the gravel. One and then that is still sat
- 1:40:57on the balcony but I need to sell it so if anyone likes red
- 1:41:00and gravel and WA get in touch it's a giant revolt too and then
- 1:41:04this one that I've just bought is also a giant a giant TCR
- 1:41:09advanced or something so as you can guess the word advanced puts
- 1:41:12a bit more cost into the equation yeah but it's just like
- 1:41:16loads of gears just an all around better ride is it it's
- 1:41:20fucking weighs like a feather yeah carbon yeah you can really
- 1:41:25get going on it so yesterday that this is the only thing I
- 1:41:28wanted to mention about my training I joined this local
- 1:41:31group called the chain reaction training or something when I met
- 1:41:36them at a coffee shop in Subiaco 6A yesterday morning for A65K
- 1:41:42loop. And she hasn't realised, like,
- 1:41:45some of the politics and like, formalities involved in cycling.
- 1:41:48It's not like just just go for a long run.
- 1:41:51There's all sorts of like unwritten rules around, like
- 1:41:54where you can be placed and when you can overtake and all this.
- 1:41:57So it was quite, it's quite overwhelming for a novice
- 1:42:00cyclist who just wants to go out and send it as hard as he can
- 1:42:03and get his heart rate off. Thanks.
- 1:42:06Have have you been going physio? Yeah, but it's with Steve and
- 1:42:11he's like so hard to get an appointment.
- 1:42:13With SO. I'm in between the initial
- 1:42:15consultation. I'm a follow up at the minute.
- 1:42:18The follow up is in like a week or so now, but I've been doing
- 1:42:22all the stuff that he sent me, Jim, three times a week.
- 1:42:25So I'm somewhat hopeful that maybe when I see him again, we
- 1:42:30can, I don't know if we'll start to walk, run, but at least
- 1:42:35increase the stress or the load that we're putting through it.
- 1:42:38Like definitely we're on a slow linear progression now,
- 1:42:44hopefully. I think because I've been.
- 1:42:45Doing high step count and like doing the pain scores in the
- 1:42:49morning and stuff to make sure that it's not get going crazy
- 1:42:53and it's not to be fair. So this is the point.
- 1:42:57A couple of months ago I was almost like I've lost hope of
- 1:43:00giving up, but now I'm starting to see like a little bit of
- 1:43:04optimism and optimism and stuff. So I need to be careful now not
- 1:43:09to like go too far that way and try and start to rush it, you
- 1:43:12know what I mean? But you're in no rush as well.
- 1:43:15Like yeah, exactly. Just yeah, do what he says.
- 1:43:19The cycling is going to get you so fit at least you've like a
- 1:43:21good rig under you now which helps a lot.
- 1:43:24So like you'll be so aerobically fit you just need your legs then
- 1:43:29to. Condition your legs so.
- 1:43:32Yeah, I wouldn't be too worried anymore.
- 1:43:33Once the pain is like not there anymore, it's almost going to be
- 1:43:39like a process of sleepwalking through it and then waking.
- 1:43:42Up and being like. Wow, I'm up to like 60 minute
- 1:43:45runs. What the hell?
- 1:43:45Like we're doing walk runs like 4 weeks ago, you know, just
- 1:43:50almost not thinking about or like doing a full training week
- 1:43:53and just do walk for 5 minutes, jog for one minute.
- 1:43:58And then by the end of four weeks, like you're back and
- 1:44:00you're like, shit, how'd this happen?
- 1:44:03But the worst thing is like the phantom pain, like sometimes
- 1:44:06you're so you're just waiting for that pain to come and like I
- 1:44:10sort of get it on my knee sometimes where I think it's
- 1:44:12sore. But then like after drawn, it's
- 1:44:14like Grant and I don't feel it touch wood.
- 1:44:17But yeah, like that's the it's more like the mental battle of
- 1:44:21like it's so mental. It's just to get over and just
- 1:44:25it's not there anymore. I just need to get on with it.
- 1:44:28But no, at least there's improvement.
- 1:44:31Yeah. Well, what I initially thought
- 1:44:33was I because like first proper injury, I thought that you, you
- 1:44:38needed everything to be like completely clear, no pain.
- 1:44:41But you have to like stress it a little bit and see how it reacts
- 1:44:45to kind of like see where you are.
- 1:44:47So a little bit of pain is almost good.
- 1:44:50And like in a sense and like your body will adapt to a
- 1:44:55certain extent. Like your body will adapt to
- 1:44:58find it's the most efficient way to like reduce the pain and all
- 1:45:03that sort of stuff, but only to a certain extent.
- 1:45:05Like if it's, yeah, it's just managing that load and they
- 1:45:08return to run. And like you're in such good
- 1:45:11hands with Steve. So like he knows what he's
- 1:45:13doing. It's a bit like doing a dot to
- 1:45:16dot or a ladder. Like you go forward a little bit
- 1:45:19backwards a little bit, forward a little bit backwards a little
- 1:45:21bit. But then after a couple of
- 1:45:23weeks, you're backwards will be like a 2 out of 10 pain score on
- 1:45:28a 45 minute run and you're like, oh shit, that was a 2 out of 10
- 1:45:31pain score on a 8000 step day a few weeks ago.
- 1:45:37It's almost just like time. Remove the emotion and do the
- 1:45:40process exactly what you have to do.
- 1:45:44Oh yeah. So this ride and then we can
- 1:45:46wrap it up. The the first thing was I'd only
- 1:45:50got my flipping shoes the night before.
- 1:45:53So first time ever wearing them going out on this ride maybe
- 1:45:57overlooked underrated the importance of like being
- 1:46:00comfortable in what the Hell's the word like on clipping or
- 1:46:04whatever. I can just pick you in your
- 1:46:06house. Well, Becky, they're looking at
- 1:46:08you trying to clip and on clip. Well, I was sat on the balcony
- 1:46:11at like 10:00 Friday night, like couple of clicks in the dark and
- 1:46:17me naively thinking, oh, yeah, I'm fine.
- 1:46:19So rolls up 6:30 AM and everyone's like kind of like
- 1:46:24just stood there gathered round, like straddling their bike
- 1:46:28waiting. And obviously I didn't know
- 1:46:30anyone there. And because it's 1 so early in
- 1:46:33the morning and two, unclipping my foot from the pedal isn't
- 1:46:38second nature. Usually you just lift your foot
- 1:46:40off and you put your foot down. And because I hadn't like
- 1:46:44prepared mentally as I'm rolling to a stop, like, OK, you need to
- 1:46:48because you have to like slide your ankle rather than it's like
- 1:46:53a, the movement starts in your ankle, so you move your heel
- 1:46:58out. So you can't just like lift out.
- 1:47:00So you've got a bit. It's a deliberate action, you
- 1:47:02know what I mean? So then I haven't thought about
- 1:47:05that, but then I'm like, shit, I'm now static.
- 1:47:08I've got like half a second to get my foot off this thing and
- 1:47:13the bike started going slightly and thankfully literally like
- 1:47:181/10 of a second away of a, I've been able to plant my force, but
- 1:47:22I've half fallen. So everyone's like looking at me
- 1:47:25like, what the fucks this guy doing?
- 1:47:30So you didn't fall. It didn't fall, no.
- 1:47:32But it wasn't a good start. My heart rate was immediately
- 1:47:35sky high off that. And then they've done this thing
- 1:47:40called rolling. So like the red say there's 20
- 1:47:45in a group, they wrote the road 10 by 2 deep, if that makes
- 1:47:49sense. Like shoulder to shoulder for 10
- 1:47:51people and then the outside group would always be travelling
- 1:47:54faster. So and then they would cut in,
- 1:47:57he would cut in, he would cut in.
- 1:47:59So like the. Outside group.
- 1:48:01Is always making the line longer and then the one who's at the
- 1:48:04back pulls out and starts the process again, but like a
- 1:48:07conveyor belt and you're all moving forward.
- 1:48:10And I didn't realize that when I was getting to the front, I was
- 1:48:13apparently like, because you have to accelerate to obviously
- 1:48:17get to the front and then you become exposed to the wind.
- 1:48:19So you have to try even harder. And I was then gap in the group
- 1:48:23by like 5 meters and some some old boy gave me like a yellow
- 1:48:28card. He was as he went past me was
- 1:48:30like stay off the front for 5 minutes.
- 1:48:34What? I can't believe this is like
- 1:48:36what happens. It's like.
- 1:48:38Mate it's all still new to. Me because apparently, like the
- 1:48:44the purpose of you go into the front as you're meant to take
- 1:48:48the person behind with you, like you're not trying to like break
- 1:48:51anyone or yeah, yeah, it's not about you.
- 1:48:53It's about the team. So Dean wouldn't be good gap in
- 1:48:57them. Oh yeah.
- 1:48:57Dean with them. I'm way off the front like
- 1:49:00making them feel the pain. But I walked away.
- 1:49:02I came away from it a bit like, oh, I didn't realize exercise
- 1:49:05could be like so processed and so like limiting like I just
- 1:49:09wanted to have a good, good hit out.
- 1:49:10But I feel like that's the good thing about running.
- 1:49:13You can just, yeah, I don't know, please yourself.
- 1:49:16Yeah, basically. But no fair play for doing that.
- 1:49:19I feel like that's so far on my comfort zone.
- 1:49:22I don't I just I don't think I wouldn't be able to do what you
- 1:49:25do No fair play. That's good fun and I reckon.
- 1:49:30That's the episode there because we're.
- 1:49:32Going on 2 hours YouTube Diaries we can roll for next week.
- 1:49:36Oh sure, just quick a quick one and and to be cannon set up.
- 1:49:41YouTube his. The first one he's YouTube he's
- 1:49:44released is is he's an ambassador for this race in Port
- 1:49:47Douglas. So it's just about that.
- 1:49:50And then he's just mostly talking.
- 1:49:51Yeah, but and he's doing in the build up to and Valencia.
- 1:49:55So people get subscribing to that one and it'll be
- 1:49:59interesting to see how he rolls there.
- 1:50:03Yeah. Keen to see his recovery journey
- 1:50:06and. I think have to might have said.
- 1:50:08He's going for the Australian record in, in Valencia.
- 1:50:11You know, I wouldn't put it past that kid.
- 1:50:13He is. It's crazy how under a he did
- 1:50:16right under a he is like. Yeah, now have.
- 1:50:20To the world is at his feet, he can do whatever he wants.
- 1:50:24So Andy be going there not only like trying to better his own
- 1:50:28record. But also.
- 1:50:29Feeling like he might need to defend his record, Which it's
- 1:50:32crazy how it turns, isn't it? Yeah.
- 1:50:34So first was right now Andy, now have to.
- 1:50:36Yeah. I'd love to go off to Valencia
- 1:50:38for that race. It'd be so good just to watch
- 1:50:40it, even though it's any better watching on TV.
- 1:50:42It's sort of like the F1. Like going to the F1 is cool,
- 1:50:45but you miss so much of it. Like, it's nearly better, like
- 1:50:48watching on TV and get in the commentary.
- 1:50:52Yeah, that would be an. Unreal trip for you to.
- 1:50:57Be even better. If you're in the race, but it's
- 1:50:59a. Shame that they don't do like
- 1:51:00the half on the same weekends. You could do the half and just
- 1:51:02be involved. I just can't justify.
- 1:51:04I'm going to Valencia and descent in January for the 10K.
- 1:51:08So like I can't go like start December and January if it would
- 1:51:12be cool if it's like a weekend sort of thing.
- 1:51:14And the best at least, even though like I know Sony athletes
- 1:51:17will do every single on them. They'll do the half to fall
- 1:51:20under 10K. But now, yeah, did you see the
- 1:51:23end of Clayton's, like, post Tokyo wrap up video?
- 1:51:28And he's like, you know, the video where he's like explains
- 1:51:31his fall and blah, blah. Yeah.
- 1:51:32And he says, I've had Valencia's nice in December and then just
- 1:51:36cuts. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:51:38Like everyone is going to be there.
- 1:51:40If a sponsor, if a sponsor wants to hop on board and we'll do a
- 1:51:44live podcast out there, send Team Island there, the
- 1:51:47unofficial Team Island. I say this is the end of the
- 1:51:53podcast, but we're going to. Hopefully slip some.
- 1:51:55Chicago chat and after the end of this yeah so it will go in
- 1:51:59right here right guys? And now we'll just get to the
- 1:52:05Chicago. Results.
- 1:52:06So it's. Been a couple of hours now,
- 1:52:08Chicago's finished and Ryan and Dean are tucked away in bed.
- 1:52:13So I said I do this one solo, but Chicago, being in Chicago,
- 1:52:18it's renowned for its fast times.
- 1:52:19It's a pretty flat course. The only thing that can really
- 1:52:22mess you up is the weather. And look at the times like it
- 1:52:27looked to be in a pretty reasonable weather in the men's
- 1:52:31and. Jacob.
- 1:52:32Kaplimo Umm the world record holder in the half marathon.
- 1:52:36He won it in a. 2/02/20. Three and second was Amos
- 1:52:41Kipruto from Kenya IN20354 and 3rd was Alex Masai IN20437.
- 1:52:49In fourth was your boy Connor Mance from the USA with a 20443,
- 1:52:56which is a new American record. So that will go down well with
- 1:53:01the Americans. Other notable mention was Rory
- 1:53:04Linklater who got a new PB of 20649.
- 1:53:08He came ninth, which was yeah, again, a massive, he's at a
- 1:53:12massive year this year. But yeah, Connor Mance 20443 he
- 1:53:17have to be happy with that like a tool like sub 205 is.
- 1:53:20Just a totally. It's another world again in in
- 1:53:26marathoning. So for reference he was
- 1:53:30averaging like sub three minute kilometers nearly the whole way
- 1:53:35through his last. He was hurting in the end but
- 1:53:39like it ranges from his fastest 5th like miles that was like.
- 1:53:47In kilometer pace was 258. 25525K like he was moving so
- 1:53:53well so to finish it with 20443 like it's incredible.
- 1:53:59And Jacob Kapimo on the other side, he he started hurting as
- 1:54:03well. He popped hard at the end, but
- 1:54:05he just had enough to hang on like he A40K he was running
- 1:54:10three O 8 at the mile 25. He was 321 kilometer pace and a
- 1:54:16mile 25.2 he was 327. So he was hurting in the end,
- 1:54:21but he just had enough. He had enough to hang on in the
- 1:54:24end. So fair play to fair play to
- 1:54:27good old Jacob and his and his. Agent, we'll.
- 1:54:31Leave it at that. So the top.
- 1:54:34Three men in this one. Were Connor man's #1 Wesley Kip
- 1:54:372. He ran two O 9 and then Ryan
- 1:54:40Ford, Wesley Kup 2 round 2O9O2 and Ryan Ford round two O 937.
- 1:54:46So I'm not sure on them guys, but that's your top three
- 1:54:49Americans now the women, umm, Hawaii facea.
- 1:54:55Geisha. From Ethiopia she won in a 21456
- 1:55:00second was mayor get to I'll remove.
- 1:55:04I'm so bad at these names. But anyway, you know she's
- 1:55:07Ethiopian. Again 217. 18 and 3rd was
- 1:55:11Magdalena Shiru from I'm not even going to.
- 1:55:15I don't know where she's from to be honest.
- 1:55:17In A-218-O3. And.
- 1:55:21First American was Natasha Rogers from the USA 2/23/28 So
- 1:55:28your top three American in this one were Natasha Rather Rogers
- 1:55:322/23/28, then Dakota Poppin in a 2/24/21 and.
- 1:55:40Gabriella Rucker. IN22634 So on the women's side,
- 1:55:46like that's still like 214 is unbelievably going.
- 1:55:48It's only for that Ruth chap and get it like the 209, obviously
- 1:55:52she got done, but her record still stands.
- 1:55:54But like that's the anomaly and a Safa ran, I think a Safa ran
- 1:55:59211, which is sort of an outlier as well.
- 1:56:02But like that 214 is sort of like it's a savage run.
- 1:56:06And again, her splits were she went through halfway in 6730 and
- 1:56:15then she was pretty even like she held on well.
- 1:56:22So that is eh. Hawaii face A.
- 1:56:26Geisha yeah, so in the lads, Connor Mance went through
- 1:56:30halfway in 6219, which is just crazy.
- 1:56:36Jacob Colbimo went through halfway in 6016.
- 1:56:44So yeah, like again, different level.
- 1:56:48That is Chicago definitely one on on my bucket list and just
- 1:56:54getting over there would be yeah.
- 1:56:56Like the American crowds are meant to be unbelievable.
- 1:56:58But I'm sure Ryan and Dean would love to do it as well.
- 1:57:00But I'm yeah. So Chicago's on.
- 1:57:02New York's coming up pretty soon.
- 1:57:04When's New York coming off? And New York Marathon, New York
- 1:57:07Marathon 2025. When is it is November 2nd.
- 1:57:11So that's the next. That's the next big one.
- 1:57:15So, yeah, but that is Chicago. That's the results wrap up.
- 1:57:21Umm, just, yeah, guys, thanks again for listening to us.
- 1:57:25Umm, we can't believe how this is going so far.
- 1:57:28And umm, yeah, there really is. There's no limit to what we can
- 1:57:33do. So umm, thank you again.
- 1:57:36Please rate US 5. Star on whatever you listen on.
- 1:57:39Umm, if you want some hats, let us know.
- 1:57:41We can put another order. I don't not sure that if there's
- 1:57:45any left, but umm, yeah. Thanks again.
- 1:57:48And we'll, we'll see you next week.
- 1:57:50We'll go again. I'll talk to you.
