- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up you guys. It's me Jared from your favorite band,
- 0:02Speaker 1: Bowling for Soup and we're gonna be coming to Australia
- 0:05Speaker 1: with our good friend Frank Turner and also Australia's own
- 0:09Speaker 1: Talk Heavy for the Bowl My Bones Tour Australia that's
- 0:13Speaker 1: coming up soon. And how's it going, Chris.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I'm very well. Thanks joving yourself.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Brother, doing really great man.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Thank you my pleasure.
- 0:21Speaker 3: So as you say, falling for sweep hit Australia for
- 0:24Speaker 3: running shows very soon. Kicking off on the Sunshine Coast
- 0:27Speaker 3: on made the first and hitting Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne,
- 0:31Speaker 3: Frankston and Adelaid before finishing.
- 0:33Speaker 2: In Freemantle on May the eleven. But it's not far
- 0:36Speaker 2: at all, bro, your begs packed? Are you ready to go?
- 0:39Speaker 1: Always ready man, always ready, always ready to go, Like
- 0:42Speaker 1: Frank Turner says, you know he's got his bag packed
- 0:45Speaker 1: and get up, shower in half an hour, begone. I'll
- 0:47Speaker 1: be there soon. So uh yeah, you know we're we're
- 0:51Speaker 1: you know, after we were back for good things, you know,
- 0:54Speaker 1: I was just like, why are we not coming here more?
- 0:56Speaker 1: And and so we were talking to destroy all lines
- 1:00Speaker 1: and trying to think of a good band that we
- 1:02Speaker 1: could tour with, and we had just watched Frank and
- 1:05Speaker 1: the Sleeping Souls, and I was just like, why don't
- 1:07Speaker 1: we just come over here with Frank Turner And a
- 1:09Speaker 1: lot of things have to align for that to happen.
- 1:11Speaker 1: You know, bands are always talking to each other like hey,
- 1:13Speaker 1: we should tour together, we should do this, and you
- 1:16Speaker 1: got to have agents and managers and schedules and so
- 1:20Speaker 1: many things come together for it to actually happen. And
- 1:23Speaker 1: so we were really really lucky that it that it
- 1:26Speaker 1: went down this way, and then we were able to
- 1:28Speaker 1: extend it to the UK as well. So it's going
- 1:31Speaker 1: to be a really fun early summer for us.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I sauld like you say, mate, you were here last
- 1:35Speaker 3: as quite a Group Things festival in twenty twenty four.
- 1:37Speaker 3: So what's changed with bowling for suits since your last Audia?
- 1:42Speaker 1: I mean, I guess really the only thing that is
- 1:45Speaker 1: that is different is we're used to not having Chris,
- 1:48Speaker 1: you know. I mean, Chris retired officially a year a
- 1:52Speaker 1: year and a half ago, and so you know, we
- 1:55Speaker 1: did come over there as a three piece, but it
- 1:57Speaker 1: was still sort of in that area of not really
- 1:59Speaker 1: knowing what the future was going to be like, whether
- 2:02Speaker 1: he was going to be able to come back and stuff.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So you know, we're really comfortable with it, and the
- 2:07Speaker 1: crowd is comfortable with it, and everybody's happy and and uh,
- 2:10Speaker 1: you know, still still lucky to be out there. They're
- 2:13Speaker 1: playing shows. But as far as anything else, you know,
- 2:16Speaker 1: we're you know, the only we've recorded a new album
- 2:19Speaker 1: and uh, but we'll be playing be playing the hits
- 2:22Speaker 1: when we come to Australia. I don't think the new
- 2:24Speaker 1: album is going to be out probably until next year,
- 2:26Speaker 1: so everybody will have to wait on that, which is
- 2:28Speaker 1: good for concert goers. I know you want to hear
- 2:30Speaker 1: the hits anyway.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Nice now, as you say, I was called the All
- 2:35Speaker 3: My Bones Tour, and I was got to try to
- 2:37Speaker 3: amalgamate both band names together to see where it comes from.
- 2:40Speaker 2: But I can't figure it out, like you come from.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Well, it's because, uh, Frank has an album called England
- 2:47Speaker 1: Keep my Bones, and uh so I was just like,
- 2:50Speaker 1: why don't we call it the Bowl of My Bone
- 2:52Speaker 1: instead of Keep my Bones Bowl of my Bones and uh,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and he liked it. I had a few other tour
- 2:57Speaker 1: names and stuff that were just kind of silly, and
- 2:59Speaker 1: I think both my bones is fairly silly, but but
- 3:02Speaker 1: it's it. There's there's a bit of poeticness to it,
- 3:04Speaker 1: I think, you know, And so yeah, I U and
- 3:07Speaker 1: I love alliteration. So i'm i'm, i'm. I was glad
- 3:11Speaker 1: that he agreed to that one.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and it is being built as a co headlining
- 3:16Speaker 3: show with yourself and Frank China.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So does that mean you're gonna be alternating closing every night?
- 3:20Speaker 2: Does it just means both to going headline link sets?
- 3:23Speaker 1: Definitely headline link sets. I'm not really sure how it's
- 3:26Speaker 1: worked out yet. Honestly, it's so funny because we get
- 3:28Speaker 1: asked this every interview and neither Frank or I know,
- 3:31Speaker 1: but uh, you know I know this, and you know
- 3:34Speaker 1: I've seen his band and he's seen mine, and and
- 3:37Speaker 1: so we both know that the other's band is is
- 3:39Speaker 1: pretty good, and so there is a bit of a
- 3:43Speaker 1: of a of a pressure for both of us to
- 3:45Speaker 1: get out there and put on the best show we
- 3:47Speaker 1: can and so everybody's gonna benefit from that. But I'm
- 3:51Speaker 1: a huge Frank fan. Uh, So whether he plays before
- 3:55Speaker 1: or after us, I'll be side stage watching every night.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And uh and I'm sure he'll be doing the same.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Thing I said.
- 4:01Speaker 3: The press release says that fall In for Soup makes
- 4:04Speaker 3: it feel like a party everywhere they go. Now for
- 4:06Speaker 3: the benefit of people who might not have seen you before.
- 4:09Speaker 3: How do you make a live show just like a party?
- 4:13Speaker 1: You know? It's really just like hanging out, you know,
- 4:16Speaker 1: I it's it's you know, I always say it's like
- 4:18Speaker 1: hanging out with your friends. But we just have really
- 4:20Speaker 1: loud guitars, you know. But every night's different. We walk
- 4:24Speaker 1: on stage with really only a couple of things planned.
- 4:27Speaker 1: It's the what's going to be first and what's going
- 4:29Speaker 1: to be last, and we feel it. Our set list
- 4:33Speaker 1: isn't really a list, it's it's uh as far as
- 4:35Speaker 1: it being in order, it's it says songs Bowling for
- 4:38Speaker 1: Soup might play tonight, and it's just a list of songs.
- 4:41Speaker 1: So we're we're changing the show as it goes, and
- 4:45Speaker 1: we're having more fun than the audiences. And I think
- 4:47Speaker 1: that adds to that whole party atmosphere as well. And
- 4:51Speaker 1: so you know, I've always said, I if you're having
- 4:53Speaker 1: if you're having a good time, the audience can tell,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and they can I think the audience can tell when
- 4:58Speaker 1: it when you're not. You know, whether or not you're
- 5:00Speaker 1: putting on a face of being happy up there, you
- 5:03Speaker 1: know they can feel it. And so I am very
- 5:07Speaker 1: very blessed to be up on stage with the dudes
- 5:11Speaker 1: that that I would want to be around even if
- 5:14Speaker 1: we weren't playing in a rock and roll band. And
- 5:16Speaker 1: so we're up there having the time of our lives.
- 5:18Speaker 1: And you know, I think it's contagious.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Now, I'll just say hypothetically that someone's going along to
- 5:24Speaker 3: see Frank Channa, but they're not that familiar with Bowling
- 5:27Speaker 3: to Soup. What three songs he or should they listen
- 5:29Speaker 3: to before the show in order to get to know
- 5:30Speaker 3: the band of it better?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I think the thing is, if you're
- 5:34Speaker 1: not into Bowling for Soup, you would listen to nineteen
- 5:38Speaker 1: eighty five Girl, the Bad Guys Want Almost High School
- 5:41Speaker 1: Never Ends, Ohio, you'd listen. You're gonna know those songs,
- 5:44Speaker 1: whether you know that you know them or not. Like
- 5:45Speaker 1: you put it on and you'll go oh them, and
- 5:47Speaker 1: then Phineas and Ferb and so quite Frankly, you're gonna
- 5:51Speaker 1: know half our set, whether you like our band or not.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And so I would just say, honestly, not really what
- 5:58Speaker 1: you should listen to, but coming with an open mind
- 6:00Speaker 1: and you know, be ready to have a good time
- 6:02Speaker 1: and not take it too serious, you know. I mean,
- 6:05Speaker 1: Frank isn't necessarily the jokester that we are. You know,
- 6:09Speaker 1: we take a long time in between songs sometimes, and
- 6:12Speaker 1: there's there's we include the audience in the show sometimes,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and so it's just different than than really from what
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know, a lot of bands do. And and so yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 1: I would just say, you know, come in and be
- 6:24Speaker 1: ready to just let loose and have a good time.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Oh now, got back in time a bit broy like
- 6:29Speaker 3: following the Suit formed in Texas back in nineteen ninety four.
- 6:32Speaker 3: So what was the musical climate like that gave Bertha
- 6:35Speaker 3: the bandon? Where did you guys fit in back in
- 6:38Speaker 3: the start?
- 6:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that's a very good question, Thank you, Chris.
- 6:41Speaker 1: You know, I'll tell you we didn't fit in quite frankly,
- 6:46Speaker 1: no one in Texas. We're from Texas. Nobody sounded like us,
- 6:49Speaker 1: And we didn't really even know what it was we
- 6:52Speaker 1: were doing. We just knew that we liked the Descendants
- 6:55Speaker 1: and we liked you know, Green day, and we liked
- 6:58Speaker 1: those those kinds of bands, and you know, and and
- 7:01Speaker 1: then a lot of other bands that you'd never heard of,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and that's the same thing that Blink on a two
- 7:06Speaker 1: and some forty one and Newfound Glory and oh, we're
- 7:08Speaker 1: all doing in their own respective parts of the world.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And so little did we know that we had a
- 7:14Speaker 1: whole group of bands out there that would become our
- 7:17Speaker 1: peers and would become what we what we know now
- 7:20Speaker 1: is pop punk. But back then we were sort of
- 7:23Speaker 1: on an island and there just wasn't anyone that sounded
- 7:26Speaker 1: like us, and so quite frankly, it was hard for
- 7:29Speaker 1: us to get shows at first. And what happened. Rap
- 7:31Speaker 1: rock bands, bands that sounded a lot like Limp Biscuit
- 7:34Speaker 1: and things like that were really popular and they thought
- 7:37Speaker 1: we were funny, and so we got a lot of
- 7:39Speaker 1: shows just by the comedy aspect of our band and
- 7:42Speaker 1: stuff and so, and we were winning over crowds all
- 7:46Speaker 1: the time. But as far as the climate itself, you know,
- 7:48Speaker 1: I mean, we we left our hometown of wichtaf Falls
- 7:51Speaker 1: because it just there was nobody that really wanted to
- 7:54Speaker 1: hear what it was we were doing. And we found
- 7:56Speaker 1: our audience and and you know, and then started to
- 8:00Speaker 1: spread our wings a little bit and eventually, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 1: started to find those bands that sounded like us, and
- 8:04Speaker 1: find our peers and find our group and our niche
- 8:07Speaker 1: and and all of that. And you know, and musically,
- 8:10Speaker 1: I wanted to start the punk rock beatles. I wanted
- 8:13Speaker 1: a band where everybody sang. And so the first two
- 8:16Speaker 1: albums we didn't really have a lead singer. Eric sang
- 8:19Speaker 1: some and I sang some, and then all four guys
- 8:22Speaker 1: in the band sang, and you know, as we started
- 8:25Speaker 1: to move along, it became the songs that I was
- 8:28Speaker 1: writing was the were the ones that we were sort
- 8:30Speaker 1: of leaning onto, and it it just gradually shifted into
- 8:34Speaker 1: it being more of of me being the lead singer
- 8:37Speaker 1: and then you know, putting me in the middle and
- 8:39Speaker 1: and and all of that stuff. But you know, that
- 8:41Speaker 1: was that was a four or five year evolution. And
- 8:45Speaker 1: so you know, that's just all just pounding it away
- 8:48Speaker 1: at the clubs and and just playing anywhere people would
- 8:51Speaker 1: listen to us.
- 8:53Speaker 3: So and do you remember the first time you heard
- 8:55Speaker 3: one of these songs on radio?
- 8:57Speaker 2: And then where were you at the time?
- 8:59Speaker 1: I do, yeah, I actually I owned a toy store
- 9:02Speaker 1: when I was a kid, and uh, I was. I
- 9:04Speaker 1: was actually uh the trash. Uh do you call it
- 9:08Speaker 1: a dumpster where you take all the trash and I
- 9:10Speaker 1: put it in. Yeah, okay, So the dumpster was around
- 9:14Speaker 1: the building. I drove a pickup truck. I'm from Texas, right,
- 9:17Speaker 1: And so I backed my truck up to the back
- 9:19Speaker 1: door and I've loaded it all up with the trash
- 9:21Speaker 1: and I was gonna drive it around. And I turned
- 9:23Speaker 1: on my truck and and there it was. It was
- 9:26Speaker 1: our song was on the radio, and uh, I just
- 9:29Speaker 1: remember I I sort of screamed, and it's you know,
- 9:32Speaker 1: this is way before the iPhone and things like that.
- 9:35Speaker 1: So I just sat there and and basted it, sort
- 9:38Speaker 1: of laughed a little bit and and uh, you know,
- 9:40Speaker 1: but I'll tell you, you know, video of me even
- 9:42Speaker 1: recently where I'm in the I'm in the car and
- 9:46Speaker 1: and one of our songs comes on and it it
- 9:48Speaker 1: never gets old, it really doesn't. It is one of
- 9:51Speaker 1: those things where you just, uh, you know, you don't
- 9:55Speaker 1: really get used to it, you know. You it's just
- 9:57Speaker 1: you know, it's every time you feel like you want
- 9:59Speaker 1: you want to prize or something you know, like, hey,
- 10:01Speaker 1: we did it.
- 10:02Speaker 2: It wasn't that long ago.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Ball at the Suit celebrated thirty years as a band mate.
- 10:08Speaker 3: So how would you say the band's Brian or changed
- 10:11Speaker 3: musically over the course of three decades.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Well, I mean the biggest thing is we've just gotten
- 10:16Speaker 1: better at everything. You know. We're obviously better at our
- 10:20Speaker 1: instruments just from from the sheer, you know, just from
- 10:24Speaker 1: playing as much as we have, and we're better singers.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I'm fortunate in that my range just gets better and
- 10:31Speaker 1: better with time. And it's I can't explain it, but
- 10:36Speaker 1: you know, so I think we're better songwriters, and you know,
- 10:39Speaker 1: we're a better unit and are we're happier, and you
- 10:42Speaker 1: know it's our Our band and crew are a big family.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Most of the guys have been with us for you know,
- 10:47Speaker 1: twenty years, and so you know, I think it's just
- 10:51Speaker 1: been sort of this evolution of of you know, having
- 10:55Speaker 1: to you know, getting better at what we're doing, but
- 10:57Speaker 1: also experiencing life and and you know, the curve balls
- 11:00Speaker 1: that life throws at you and navigating all that you
- 11:03Speaker 1: know together and being in a more comfortable spot you know, mentally,
- 11:07Speaker 1: and all of that. So quite a bit I mean,
- 11:10Speaker 1: a lot happens in thirty years, you know, and you
- 11:13Speaker 1: know we've we've lost we've lost friends along the way,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and you know, I've of course, I'm divorced and remarried
- 11:19Speaker 1: and you know, and my kids are grown and you know,
- 11:22Speaker 1: it just it's it's weird, but you know, I'm happy.
- 11:26Speaker 1: We're still chugging away.
- 11:28Speaker 3: And No, that album just spoke about before, mate, Is
- 11:30Speaker 3: that the live acoustic album that you used to putting together?
- 11:34Speaker 2: Uh, we have it.
- 11:35Speaker 1: No, we actually have a new album that we just
- 11:37Speaker 1: we just went and recorded it and it's uh, it
- 11:41Speaker 1: probably won't be out until next year, but it's new music.
- 11:44Speaker 1: And I think, honestly, I I know every band says this,
- 11:47Speaker 1: but I I'm on record as saying that I would
- 11:50Speaker 1: never say that because I know that drunken out to
- 11:52Speaker 1: dance and hangover you don't deserve mean a lot to
- 11:55Speaker 1: a lot of people. So I'm not gonna insult anyone
- 11:59Speaker 1: by saying saying it's the best thing we've ever done.
- 12:01Speaker 1: But I really do think that it is the best
- 12:04Speaker 1: collection of songs we've ever put together.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Well, you don't look like you tell a lot of me, brothers,
- 12:08Speaker 3: So I'm gonna take you away for that one. So
- 12:12Speaker 3: before you go, mate, we've got a new segment. We've
- 12:14Speaker 3: started toward photo bombs. So basically, I'll troll three social media.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I'll come up with a few photos on ospit a
- 12:20Speaker 3: little bit more about Okay, one is this one?
- 12:24Speaker 2: What were you drinking here?
- 12:25Speaker 1: Bro? Because shit, yeah, so that's my that's bullet, that's
- 12:31Speaker 1: my whiskey face. And I can't help that. I actually
- 12:34Speaker 1: am not a big whiskey drinker. I'm not. I pretty
- 12:38Speaker 1: much just drink Miller. Like so if y'all have ever
- 12:40Speaker 1: been to the States, this would taste like water to
- 12:42Speaker 1: you guys, but it's very light and uh you know,
- 12:46Speaker 1: that's what I drink. So when I do drink whiskey,
- 12:49Speaker 1: that's the face that I make. And I can also
- 12:52Speaker 1: tell you that that photo was taken in November because
- 12:55Speaker 1: of the ribbon on my on my shirt. See the
- 13:00Speaker 1: the ribbon on my shirt the little pin here, Yeah,
- 13:04Speaker 1: that's for breast cancer awareness and uh so that would
- 13:07Speaker 1: have been in November.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Well, there you get it.
- 13:10Speaker 3: And the second fighter we found is one of you
- 13:13Speaker 3: and a mutual friend of Heavy's, Thomas from American Pie.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm pretty sure. That's when he surprised me in
- 13:23Speaker 1: Chicago and came in and then we let him come
- 13:26Speaker 1: on stage as Henry Rowan Garner and uh and sing
- 13:29Speaker 1: a song with us and Thomas and I really hit
- 13:32Speaker 1: it off and we are we're we we tend to
- 13:37Speaker 1: to drink a lot when we're together. So my wife
- 13:39Speaker 1: calls us oil and oil because we mixed together way
- 13:43Speaker 1: too perfectly.
- 13:46Speaker 2: He's actually a pretty damn five musician for an accuratey.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Great musician, got such a cool voice. Uh. The main
- 13:52Speaker 1: thing is this passion, you know, you know, I think, Uh,
- 13:56Speaker 1: people ask a lot, you know what it takes to
- 13:59Speaker 1: get there and and to to be a musician and
- 14:02Speaker 1: to actually get up there and conquer it. And it
- 14:05Speaker 1: is way more than talent. It's it's it's way more
- 14:08Speaker 1: than drive. It's you know there, You've got to have
- 14:11Speaker 1: a lot of luck, You've got to be able to
- 14:13Speaker 1: talk to people. But man, passion and perseverance have always
- 14:16Speaker 1: been to me the most important two things, and he
- 14:19Speaker 1: certainly has both of those things.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Damn soedera general, Thanks very much for your time, brother,
- 14:23Speaker 3: It's been a pleasure speaking with you. The tour with
- 14:25Speaker 3: Brent Toner kicks off on May the first. I'll be
- 14:28Speaker 3: at the Brisbane show brother, so un till then, take
- 14:31Speaker 3: care of.
- 14:31Speaker 1: That's good man. I'll see you in Brisbane a right brother.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Take care, take care man,
