- 0:01Speaker 1: Being a good father is a tough job. You need
- 0:04Speaker 1: to provide for your family no matter what.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Jerry was a superb thief. He stole from his own business,
- 0:11Speaker 2: not just one way, but a dozen ways.
- 0:15Speaker 1: You need to be a role model for your children.
- 0:18Speaker 2: He was a degenerate gambler. He was a drinker and
- 0:21Speaker 2: kept a mistress. He had a girlfriend that he cheated
- 0:23Speaker 2: on his mistress with.
- 0:27Speaker 1: But when family love turns toxic, blood ties run crimson
- 0:33Speaker 1: as he.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Just tore our family apart.
- 0:37Speaker 2: You can get right with God and not be right
- 0:39Speaker 2: with your fellow man, and all too often that's what
- 0:42Speaker 2: happened in that family.
- 0:48Speaker 1: My name is Steve Sharripam. I grew up in a
- 0:51Speaker 1: pretty rough neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. I've seen good
- 0:55Speaker 1: people turn bad and bad people turn worse. Some took
- 1:01Speaker 1: contracts to carry out a hit. Some were victims of
- 1:03Speaker 1: a hit.
- 1:06Speaker 4: To hit man.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Life and death are just part of the business. It's
- 1:10Speaker 1: nothing personal. It's September twenty fifth, nineteen eighty five. Today
- 1:23Speaker 1: is Young Kapor, the day of atonement. If you're a Jew,
- 1:29Speaker 1: it's today you admit to God you cannot live up
- 1:31Speaker 1: to every promise you made, but after sunset it becomes
- 1:37Speaker 1: a feast. Sure, the idea of breaking God's laws on
- 1:41Speaker 1: young Kapoor is to the faithful almost insane, But the
- 1:45Speaker 1: clan at the heart of this story was all about crazy.
- 1:49Speaker 2: You can get right with God and not be right
- 1:51Speaker 2: with your fellow man, and all too often that's what
- 1:55Speaker 2: happened in that family.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Vere and Jerry Woodman are just getting home from a
- 1:59Speaker 1: family you could poor dinner. But this day won't be
- 2:03Speaker 1: just their day of atonement. It will be their final
- 2:05Speaker 1: day on Earth. Two of their sons have hired hit
- 2:09Speaker 1: men to kill them. So it puts another story.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Two sons to do this to their parents. I mean,
- 2:18Speaker 5: you can get aggravated with your parents, you can get pissed,
- 2:22Speaker 5: you can get a lot of things. But to resort
- 2:26Speaker 5: to murder, to me is much too much.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So the question is what was this family about? What
- 2:35Speaker 1: went so wrong that the children would hire people to
- 2:38Speaker 1: assassinate their parents. The answer begins where these things often
- 2:43Speaker 1: do with the money.
- 2:45Speaker 2: They were conspicuously affluent, and I think it was a
- 2:48Speaker 2: fetish with them. They came from working class people in Manchester, England,
- 2:53Speaker 2: where Jews were not socially prominent. And they felt that
- 2:58Speaker 2: their money equal status, and of course this is California,
- 3:01Speaker 2: it does.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Jerry Woodman was worth a fortune at one time. Anyway.
- 3:11Speaker 1: He owned a company called Manchester Products. He manufactured those
- 3:15Speaker 1: translucent plastic panels that provide a touch of class to
- 3:19Speaker 1: fluorescent lights. Jerry had his two eldest sons, Neil and Stewart,
- 3:25Speaker 1: working for him since they were sixteen. He's installed them
- 3:30Speaker 1: in Manchester to preserve the Woodman dynasty and also so
- 3:37Speaker 1: Jerry doesn't have to send them to college. The Woodman
- 3:41Speaker 1: family's great wealth is Jerry's carrot and his stick on
- 3:46Speaker 1: the books. Manchester Products is doing great off the books.
- 3:51Speaker 1: It's a gold mine.
- 3:52Speaker 2: He was very, very good at starting businesses and making
- 3:56Speaker 2: money from growing them. And one of the ways that
- 3:59Speaker 2: he was good at it was that he would steal
- 4:02Speaker 2: most of the profit and never pay taxes on it.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Jerry was a superb thief.
- 4:08Speaker 2: He stole from his own business not just one way,
- 4:10Speaker 2: but a dozen ways.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I know what you're thinking. Jerry wanted to take all
- 4:14Speaker 1: that cash and send it to UNICEF to feed the hungry. Yeah. Sure,
- 4:19Speaker 1: Jerry used that money to feed his own appetites. He
- 4:22Speaker 1: especially craved the three bees, bookies, boos, and broads. He
- 4:26Speaker 1: can never get enough, and he spent millions.
- 4:30Speaker 4: He was a gambler. He was a degenerate gambler.
- 4:33Speaker 2: He just couldn't stay away from a cards, dice, horses,
- 4:36Speaker 2: sports games.
- 4:38Speaker 4: He bequeathed that to his sons. But he was more
- 4:42Speaker 4: than a gamble.
- 4:43Speaker 2: He was a drinker and he kept a mistress at
- 4:45Speaker 2: the Beverly Hills Hotel for many years. He had a
- 4:48Speaker 2: trial with one of his mistresses. He had a succession
- 4:50Speaker 2: of mistresses. He had a girlfriend that he cheated on
- 4:52Speaker 2: his mistress with.
- 4:55Speaker 1: So Jerry Woodman was no prize. He was a thief,
- 4:58Speaker 1: a gambler, a woman eyes, and a nightmare of a
- 5:01Speaker 1: role model. Does that mean the guy should have a
- 5:04Speaker 1: contract taken on on him by his own offspring. It's
- 5:08Speaker 1: time to meet the boys, Stuart and Neil Woodman. Let's
- 5:11Speaker 1: just say the apples haven't rolled too far from the
- 5:13Speaker 1: family tree. Those boys have some rotten spots of their own.
- 5:19Speaker 6: Stuart is like a jellyfish in the ocean. He just
- 5:22Speaker 6: goes any which way, just kind of follows along. And
- 5:27Speaker 6: Stuart was overweight, didn't care about the consequences just wanted
- 5:32Speaker 6: the money and the fame.
- 5:33Speaker 7: We had somebody tell us that that Stuart called his
- 5:37Speaker 7: mother on his honeymoon and said he wanted to come home.
- 5:40Speaker 7: I mean, what kind of guy is that?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Huh So, if Stuart's just spineless, what's Neil?
- 5:48Speaker 6: Neil is the alpha dog.
- 5:50Speaker 7: Neil's a snake. He'll do anything to get whatever he wants.
- 5:56Speaker 7: They were a couple of apples.
- 5:59Speaker 1: If these guys it turned out pleasant, it had been
- 6:02Speaker 1: a miracle. Their dad had twisted and stunted them like
- 6:05Speaker 1: a pair of human bonzeye trees. Even so, the toxic
- 6:10Speaker 1: birthright came with some talent too.
- 6:13Speaker 2: They had inherited a lot of their father's talent for
- 6:15Speaker 2: this business. Stuart was a salesman. He could sell ice
- 6:18Speaker 2: to Eskimos. Neil understood the manufacturing process. He was very
- 6:22Speaker 2: good about making sure production quotas were met and expenses
- 6:27Speaker 2: were kept to talent.
- 6:29Speaker 1: And Jerry's not completely abusive with him. You never show
- 6:33Speaker 1: what you're going to get.
- 6:34Speaker 6: Gerald had two personalities. If he was your neighbor and
- 6:37Speaker 6: your friend, he was the sweetest guy. But if you
- 6:41Speaker 6: were a businessman, he was the toughest son of a bitch.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You ever dealt with, it's usually the nasty side. His
- 6:47Speaker 1: family sees.
- 6:50Speaker 2: They grew up in a household where their father's word
- 6:52Speaker 2: was law. And yet, as any kid does when living
- 6:56Speaker 2: in a household, you know when your father's done wrong,
- 6:59Speaker 2: you know when your mother is unhappy, you know when
- 7:03Speaker 2: he does things that are unfair.
- 7:05Speaker 4: But you can't argue with your father.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And this guy was, I won't say exactly a monster,
- 7:12Speaker 2: but he was a king, and he's not a very
- 7:15Speaker 2: benevolent king. He wanted things done his way. But he
- 7:20Speaker 2: was that way with everyone, not just his son.
- 7:23Speaker 5: He had a peculiar sense of humor. If you knew
- 7:26Speaker 5: Jerry Woodman, he was always sticking somebody. Stick is like
- 7:30Speaker 5: a needle. He was always needling somebody. He did his thing,
- 7:37Speaker 5: and his thing was whatever he wanted to do.
- 7:40Speaker 7: They didn't get along with their father, and he hated them,
- 7:43Speaker 7: and they hated him.
- 7:44Speaker 2: He had no compunction whatever about humiliating them.
- 7:47Speaker 4: From front of the help you.
- 7:49Speaker 7: Raise your right hand with respect to the statement you
- 7:51Speaker 7: swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing
- 7:54Speaker 7: but the truth.
- 7:54Speaker 1: So help you God. Yes, when it all came undone,
- 7:58Speaker 1: Stuart Woodman's extraordinary confession to a room full of LA
- 8:02Speaker 1: cops and lawyers lays bare how a family could come
- 8:05Speaker 1: apart so violently.
- 8:07Speaker 3: My father was always screating and yelling at it. You're stupid,
- 8:10Speaker 3: you can't do this right, you can't do that right.
- 8:11Speaker 3: My father got no thriller to yelling at people unless
- 8:14Speaker 3: it was he.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Had an audience for it. But he wouldn't just.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Yell, and he just cut you to pieces. I've never
- 8:20Speaker 3: ever gone across anybody my entire life.
- 8:25Speaker 1: They went through what I went through with my father. Eventually,
- 8:28Speaker 1: the sons decide that Dad's never going to get around
- 8:31Speaker 1: to atoning for his own sins, and the only way
- 8:33Speaker 1: to set things try it is to handle it themselves.
- 8:37Speaker 1: All they need is someone with special skills, a hit man.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Brothers Kneel and Stewart Woodman have had enough of their
- 8:47Speaker 1: dad and his abusive shenanigans. They hit on a full
- 8:51Speaker 1: proof solution, have Dad whacked. But even in LA that's
- 8:56Speaker 1: not something you can order in. You need contact. You
- 9:03Speaker 1: need someone like Steve homanck Homick is a biicoastal bone
- 9:09Speaker 1: breaker and a real fine for the brothers. He splits
- 9:12Speaker 1: his time between Las Vegas and Atlantic City, anywhere there's
- 9:16Speaker 1: a need for a bit of violent muscle.
- 9:21Speaker 2: He was just one mean sob. He had absolutely no mercy.
- 9:25Speaker 2: He was just a brutal man. He was a thug.
- 9:29Speaker 1: If you're the brains behind a murder plot, it pays
- 9:32Speaker 1: to be organized. You might need a team, a killer
- 9:35Speaker 1: for sure, maybe lookouts drivers. The problem is this. The
- 9:40Speaker 1: pool of people who are willing to take on the
- 9:42Speaker 1: task of, say, murdering someone's parents, tend not to be
- 9:45Speaker 1: evolution's grandest achievements. Steve Homerck had a team of pea
- 9:50Speaker 1: brains and reptiles, and he was no petunia in that
- 9:54Speaker 1: onion patch.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Let's be frank here, it doesn't take very much to
- 9:58Speaker 2: kill another human being if you have guns and you're
- 10:00Speaker 2: willing to use them.
- 10:02Speaker 1: So the brothers Grim have hired Homick Enterprises too resolve
- 10:06Speaker 1: their families internal strife. Yeah, that's Team Homick setting up
- 10:11Speaker 1: in the parking garage of this upscale condo. But how
- 10:16Speaker 1: has it come to this? Here's the backstory. Jerry treats
- 10:22Speaker 1: his sons like garbage, but he does eventually make them partners.
- 10:26Speaker 1: The boys put up with the abuse, figuring someday they'll
- 10:29Speaker 1: get their just reward. But there's more. There's a secret.
- 10:36Speaker 1: The Woodman brothers have no idea how well did that
- 10:39Speaker 1: has been rewarding himself. Not even his wife Vera knows
- 10:44Speaker 1: about the skim money.
- 10:46Speaker 2: He would give his whole paycheck to Vera, but the
- 10:50Speaker 2: paycheck was a fraction of what he was taking out
- 10:53Speaker 2: of their business.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Jerry eventually gives his boys a small taste to the skim.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Manchester comes to family loop bag. For all their suffering,
- 11:04Speaker 1: the boys did stay at Manchester. Those short leases had
- 11:07Speaker 1: diamond collis, so Stuart and Neil didn't stray far from
- 11:11Speaker 1: Jerry's golden trough. Each took a grand out of petty
- 11:14Speaker 1: cast each week, big money, now even bigger that, and
- 11:17Speaker 1: that was just the Woodman's candy ball. They put in
- 11:20Speaker 1: for another eight to ten g a week in phony
- 11:23Speaker 1: business expenses. They each took four thousand a month as
- 11:26Speaker 1: a car allowance, but they drove company cars. They gassed
- 11:30Speaker 1: them up on company credit cards, and then they took
- 11:32Speaker 1: a fuel allowance. If there was a way to steal
- 11:34Speaker 1: from your own company that the Woodman's didn't use, it
- 11:37Speaker 1: probably involved work.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Up to that time, the skim had been around a
- 11:44Speaker 2: million dollars a year divided between the two sons, and
- 11:48Speaker 2: another million that Jerry took.
- 11:51Speaker 1: So everything is hunky dory. Everybody's stealing, everybody's rich. The
- 11:56Speaker 1: boys hate Dad. Dad abuses them. Lots of families go
- 12:00Speaker 1: on like this for years, But at sixty one years
- 12:05Speaker 1: of age, Jerry's reign has interrupted one fine afternoon when
- 12:09Speaker 1: his heart has finally taken enough of his abuse and
- 12:12Speaker 1: it attacks him in his office. The heart attack is
- 12:23Speaker 1: proof that he has one. Being Jerry, he refuses an ambulance.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Being Jerry, he gets his way.
- 12:38Speaker 3: He insisted on driving himself to the hospital after he
- 12:41Speaker 3: had heard that that.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Was my father. He drives as he always does, like
- 12:49Speaker 1: the hounds of hall Are on his bumping. Jerry Woodman
- 12:53Speaker 1: didn't die, of course, that would have saved his son's
- 12:56Speaker 1: a lot of trouble and prison time. But he did
- 12:59Speaker 1: at least to plan something about the future. He bought
- 13:02Speaker 1: a life insurance policy on his wife, vera payable to
- 13:07Speaker 1: Manchester Products. Meanwhile, Jerry's absence from Manchester doesn't exactly leave
- 13:13Speaker 1: the place of Ruddleer's ship out from under that's thumb.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Neil and Stewart are in.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Hog Heaven, they found themselves running the company four months
- 13:23Speaker 2: nearly a year without him. They discovered that they didn't
- 13:26Speaker 2: need him.
- 13:28Speaker 1: And now with full access to the company books, the
- 13:31Speaker 1: Woodman sons discover how lopsided the partnership with Dad really is.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Wouldn't you know it? Those boys having epiphany.
- 13:41Speaker 2: They discovered that he was stealing from them, that he
- 13:44Speaker 2: was taking way more than his share. They decided they
- 13:49Speaker 2: weren't going to stand for this. They were going to
- 13:50Speaker 2: ease him out of the business. Jerry was still recovering
- 13:54Speaker 2: from this massive heart attack. They went to their mother, Vera,
- 13:57Speaker 2: and they said, Mom, don't you think it's time Dad retired?
- 14:01Speaker 2: And don't get us wrong. We'll pay us complete salary.
- 14:03Speaker 2: He'll keep all his perks. The only thing is he
- 14:06Speaker 2: doesn't have to come in. We'll take it from here.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Vera thought it was a good idea. She liked to
- 14:11Speaker 2: spend some time with her husband in declining years.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Fierra might be dreaming of shuffleboard in the sunset, but
- 14:19Speaker 1: Jerry's fingers are way too itchy for that.
- 14:23Speaker 2: But Jerry knew exactly what was going on. He knew
- 14:26Speaker 2: his sons were trying to push him out so they
- 14:27Speaker 2: could take the skin on it and steal it themselves.
- 14:31Speaker 4: And he wasn't about to let that happen.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Remember, Jerry's lifestyle depends on what he skims, not on
- 14:39Speaker 1: what he earns, and he isn't about to give up
- 14:41Speaker 1: mistresses or betting on the pony. Jerry took to the
- 14:46Speaker 1: idea of letting his sons pull his hand out of
- 14:48Speaker 1: a till like a vampire to a sunny day at
- 14:51Speaker 1: the beach. He woke up with a powerful thirst for
- 14:54Speaker 1: Manchester Products cash flow. He lashed onto its struggle and
- 14:58Speaker 1: started sucking even more more than ever out of the company.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Four race horses on the company dime, a two week
- 15:05Speaker 1: all expenses paid trip to London for himself, Vera and
- 15:08Speaker 1: half the people on their block. By this time, Neil
- 15:12Speaker 1: and Stewart are in their thirties, with families and opulent
- 15:15Speaker 1: lifestyles of their own, and now their father is going
- 15:18Speaker 1: to bring it all crashing down. He's out of control.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I want, mister Lucky in the first I want this
- 15:26Speaker 1: is the kind of situation where a young man needs
- 15:28Speaker 1: a rabbi looking for the Woodman boys, they have a
- 15:32Speaker 1: real one. Stephen Ruben is their friend and spiritual advisor.
- 15:37Speaker 8: Neil and Stewart told me their father was addicted to
- 15:41Speaker 8: gambling and their father was destroying their business, and no
- 15:43Speaker 8: matter what they did, their father was going to drive
- 15:46Speaker 8: them all into the ground, and that the only way
- 15:48Speaker 8: they could save their business, their livelihoods, their families was
- 15:51Speaker 8: to remove him from having control of the business.
- 15:55Speaker 1: His boy's plans to take over Manchester set Jerry off
- 15:58Speaker 1: big time. Side of that slowly bleeded the company Dry
- 16:02Speaker 1: wasn't causing his ungrateful sons enough pain, so he took
- 16:06Speaker 1: off his belt to give them a thrash. He served
- 16:08Speaker 1: Neil and Stewart with legal papers saying he was dissolving
- 16:11Speaker 1: the company, locking the doors and selling off the machines. Financially,
- 16:16Speaker 1: it made no sense. They'd all lose millions, but Jerry'd
- 16:19Speaker 1: still be rich and his broken, unemployed sons would know
- 16:22Speaker 1: who was really in charge. It was mean spirited, it
- 16:26Speaker 1: was vicious, and it blew up in Jerry's face. The
- 16:33Speaker 1: hitman hiding in Jerry and vera Woodman's underground parking lot
- 16:36Speaker 1: are soldiers in a war without mercy. Jerry is nasty,
- 16:42Speaker 1: abusive and selfish, but his sons have enlisted a cutthroat
- 16:47Speaker 1: named Steve Homick, and he makes Jerry look like a
- 16:50Speaker 1: pussy kit. According to Stuart's confession, murdering Jerry and Vera
- 16:56Speaker 1: was HOMEI sadd.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Steven brought up a program, was father, and that's how
- 17:05Speaker 3: it came about to worries that just let me take
- 17:07Speaker 3: care of it, you.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Won't have that problem.
- 17:10Speaker 1: And Jerry makes it easy for his sons to decide
- 17:13Speaker 1: he's got to go. Jerry Woodman is going to teach
- 17:17Speaker 1: his sons Neil and Stewart a lesson by dissolving the
- 17:20Speaker 1: family business, Manchester Products, and selling off all the machines.
- 17:24Speaker 1: But it doesn't work. A new California law allows partners
- 17:28Speaker 1: who don't want a business to be liquidated to buy
- 17:30Speaker 1: that liquidation prices. In other words, Neil and Stewart our
- 17:35Speaker 1: fox their dad and scoop up Manchester for a song.
- 17:39Speaker 1: They unhooked their leashes and give Jerry the old heave
- 17:42Speaker 1: hope turn about is fair play right. Still, the son's
- 17:47Speaker 1: victory comes with a heavy price, their relationship with their mother. Fear.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Vera was the titular head of the company and for
- 17:57Speaker 2: legal reasons, controlled uh the stock in the company. She
- 18:02Speaker 2: was the president of the company and controlled fifty percent
- 18:04Speaker 2: of the voting stock.
- 18:06Speaker 4: But she did whatever Uh Jerry told her to do.
- 18:09Speaker 4: When it came down to it, When Vera was.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Forced to choose between supporting her sons and supporting her
- 18:17Speaker 2: husband over who would control the company, she chose her husband.
- 18:22Speaker 4: No woman should ever have to make that choice. It's
- 18:25Speaker 4: a terrible situation to put their mother in. And when
- 18:28Speaker 4: she sided with her husband, it cost her her life.
- 18:32Speaker 1: There is a lawsuit, of course, Fea takes the stand
- 18:35Speaker 1: against the boys. The boys win. Vera and her sons
- 18:39Speaker 1: will never be able to patch things on.
- 18:41Speaker 8: What is it?
- 18:43Speaker 4: What was the reason for your mother?
- 18:46Speaker 3: The loss had never happened to her, never would have
- 18:50Speaker 3: never happened.
- 18:52Speaker 1: How do you say that she on the stock?
- 18:54Speaker 3: She swore to me, she says, your liver, m I
- 18:57Speaker 3: remember her sitting.
- 18:57Speaker 4: With Niel Alanta in my office.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Then I may and she's your father's praised and she's
- 19:04Speaker 3: I know he's nuts. You'll never ever get his hands
- 19:06Speaker 3: on the stock.
- 19:06Speaker 4: At least you know that.
- 19:09Speaker 3: And I moved into a house and hidden hills, and
- 19:12Speaker 3: before I moved in, I said, ye, absolutely sure, there's
- 19:15Speaker 3: no problems with anything. He had threatened before, and he said, no,
- 19:22Speaker 3: go in and move in and enjoy yourself. And a
- 19:25Speaker 3: few months after I moved in, he get served with it.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Watson, what you're sayings you felt in the trade by
- 19:31Speaker 1: your mother?
- 19:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I felt the trade my mind.
- 19:35Speaker 4: The son's wound up with the company.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Jerry wound up with his two million dollar paid for
- 19:40Speaker 2: a house, seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars in cash,
- 19:43Speaker 2: and Vera's jewelie. Now, a lot of guys would have
- 19:46Speaker 2: taken that and got a palm spring this condo and
- 19:49Speaker 2: she's had a very.
- 19:50Speaker 4: Nice life for the rest of the rest of their life.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Not Jerry.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Jerry was not going to take his son's victory lying down.
- 19:58Speaker 1: He'd set out to ruin Neil and do it. And
- 20:00Speaker 1: that's what he meant to do, even if he had
- 20:02Speaker 1: to burn through every cent he had, and believe me,
- 20:06Speaker 1: he had quite a few. He mortgaged his bell at mansion,
- 20:09Speaker 1: he sold Vera his diamonds he borrowed from other relatives,
- 20:12Speaker 1: and he used all that dough to go into competition
- 20:15Speaker 1: with his sons Woodman Industries. His new company has only
- 20:21Speaker 1: one mission.
- 20:23Speaker 2: He cut prices to the point where he knew his
- 20:26Speaker 2: sons couldn't compete and make a profit. He didn't care.
- 20:29Speaker 2: He was not out to make a profit. He was
- 20:31Speaker 2: out to destroy them.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Jerry won't be happy until he drives his sons into bankruptcy.
- 20:37Speaker 1: He doesn't stop it undercutting their prices. He also poaches
- 20:42Speaker 1: their stack.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Then we started having salesman tell us me, you know
- 20:46Speaker 3: your father's offered. Is this your father's officers that we lost.
- 20:50Speaker 3: We lost several salesmen, We lost our staff crows except
- 20:53Speaker 3: for three or four main workers. We lost our cartow workers.
- 20:59Speaker 1: But these battles don't prevent the Woodman sons from making
- 21:02Speaker 1: Manchester their cash dispenser, as it had been their dad's
- 21:06Speaker 1: before them.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Stuart O'Neil thought nothing of going to Las Vegas once
- 21:12Speaker 2: a month and dropping fifty grand in the craps table.
- 21:15Speaker 2: If they won, great, they'd buy their wires fur coats.
- 21:18Speaker 1: The Woodman boys were now living the life that dad's lost,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and he had held back, and they had learned how
- 21:23Speaker 1: to waste money from the Michael Jordan of mindless spending.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Stuart bought his wife so many fur coats. They designed
- 21:30Speaker 1: the fourteen hundred square foot refrigerated closet just to house them.
- 21:37Speaker 1: They're not so casual about losing their battle with Jerry
- 21:40Speaker 1: though they may not have his bluster, but their war
- 21:43Speaker 1: with Dad is no low stakes crapski.
- 21:46Speaker 2: They were trying to get even with their father for
- 21:49Speaker 2: a whole lifetime of abuse. They were forcing him to
- 21:54Speaker 2: atone for what he had done to them, the way
- 21:57Speaker 2: he had raised them, the household that they had grown
- 21:59Speaker 2: up in. This I think was the way they justified
- 22:04Speaker 2: this in their own minds.
- 22:06Speaker 1: As for Steve Homick and his team of assassins, they're
- 22:10Speaker 1: just greedy and mindlessly bloodthirsty. It's hard to imagine where
- 22:15Speaker 1: such people come from. Oh yeah, that's Vegas. To a gambler,
- 22:24Speaker 1: all roads lead to Vegas. The Woodmans were well known
- 22:27Speaker 1: on the strip, and if you throw a lot of
- 22:29Speaker 1: money around in Sincitia, sure to meet some sinners. The
- 22:33Speaker 1: Homok brothers were just the kind of snake so like
- 22:36Speaker 1: the bask and the glow of other people's cash.
- 22:39Speaker 7: Stuart's wife was extremely attractive, and they loved to go
- 22:43Speaker 7: to Las Vegas. They were big gamblers. They gambled on horses,
- 22:47Speaker 7: they bet basketball, football, they bet on the rise and
- 22:50Speaker 7: fall of the sun. At some point When they were
- 22:53Speaker 7: in Vegas, Stuart's wife met Steve and he kind of
- 22:58Speaker 7: hit on her, and that's how they got to meet
- 23:02Speaker 7: Steve Hammick.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Steve Homock had been in La cop but he never
- 23:06Speaker 1: had much of a taste for law enforcement. He did
- 23:09Speaker 1: enjoy the opportunity to beat up people who were in handcuffs.
- 23:13Speaker 1: The LAPD wasn't so into that anymore, so Homick got
- 23:17Speaker 1: the boot. But in the Gomora of the Mohave, Homik
- 23:21Speaker 1: finds people who appreciate his talents.
- 23:27Speaker 2: He was in Las Vegas doing thuggy's jobs for the mob.
- 23:32Speaker 2: They would use him to break a leg or a
- 23:34Speaker 2: knee cap or shoot somebody, and he was running a
- 23:37Speaker 2: half a dozen other criminal enterprises.
- 23:39Speaker 1: On the signing, Homik and the Woodman brothers become choe
- 23:42Speaker 1: me over roulette wheels and twenty point spreads, and the
- 23:46Speaker 1: boy's new friend, Steve, finds them away to win every
- 23:50Speaker 1: single trip. Somewhere along the line, Steve Neila Stewart hit
- 24:04Speaker 1: on a new scheme. While the Woodmans were dropping cash
- 24:07Speaker 1: in Vegas, Homemick would help them recoup by burgling their
- 24:10Speaker 1: houses back in La Insurance would pay for the jewels.
- 24:13Speaker 1: The brothers said were taken and the losers at the
- 24:16Speaker 1: tables would become winners at insurance fraud.
- 24:20Speaker 7: Stuart would file an insurance claim and the insurance company
- 24:24Speaker 7: would pay off on the burglary at Stuart's house, which
- 24:27Speaker 7: occurred on any number of game whatever. Stuart went to Las.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Vegas like the Woodman's. Steve Homick runs a family business.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Brother Bob is his partner.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Robert was a great big guy who is a member
- 24:45Speaker 2: of the California Bar, but who could never quite get
- 24:48Speaker 2: h a job in law firm because he would go
- 24:50Speaker 2: on a job interviews wearing surfer shorts and a big
- 24:54Speaker 2: T shirt. He made a living stealing law books to
- 24:58Speaker 2: order for law students.
- 25:00Speaker 1: When he wasn't swiping textbooks for future shysters, Robert would
- 25:03Speaker 1: hoist the Woodman's cars. He'd abandon them in the desert
- 25:07Speaker 1: or drive them off cliffs. I know it sounds like
- 25:10Speaker 1: a great hobby, but the real aim was collecting more
- 25:13Speaker 1: insurance money. But the insurance scams are just a warm
- 25:18Speaker 1: up for the main event, a grudge match between parents
- 25:22Speaker 1: and children with an ending that's right out of a
- 25:25Speaker 1: horror move. You might want to close your eyes. What
- 25:30Speaker 1: was ugly is about to get hideous. War is raging
- 25:36Speaker 1: in the Woodman family. Hostilities between father and sons have
- 25:39Speaker 1: gone from bidder to vicious, and just how deep do
- 25:43Speaker 1: they run? When Neil is planning his son's bar mitzvah,
- 25:50Speaker 1: he decides he needs armed guards.
- 25:55Speaker 3: You don't really believe my father was going to crash
- 25:57Speaker 3: through the Templinga's car and sit there and watch his
- 25:59Speaker 3: son gefum this.
- 26:00Speaker 1: You really believe that this time it's Rabbi Stephen Rubin
- 26:04Speaker 1: who's caught in the middle.
- 26:06Speaker 8: He was literally concerned and afraid of his father coming
- 26:10Speaker 8: in and disrupting the service and ruining his son's bar mitzvah.
- 26:14Speaker 8: I was the one that came to to try to
- 26:17Speaker 8: see if they could institute some higher level of security,
- 26:21Speaker 8: let's say, for that bar mitzvav experience, so that they
- 26:25Speaker 8: could keep the Neil's father off the premises and avoid
- 26:31Speaker 8: any possibility of some kind of a scene going on
- 26:33Speaker 8: that would, you know, diminish the day for his son.
- 26:38Speaker 1: It's the bar mitzvah threat that leads Neil to turn
- 26:40Speaker 1: to Steve Homick as his fix it man, and Homick
- 26:45Speaker 1: solves it in a jiffy he eyes a pair of
- 26:47Speaker 1: retired cops to man the barricade, And what does Neil
- 26:53Speaker 1: tell the cops to do if Granny and Grandpa stormed
- 26:56Speaker 1: the gates shoot him. In their day to day work,
- 27:02Speaker 1: cops see a lot of dysfunction. One toxic family tends
- 27:06Speaker 1: to blean into the next. So you get cynical about
- 27:10Speaker 1: the whole human race. I think, if you're a police officer,
- 27:14Speaker 1: just getting up in the morning could be a triumph
- 27:16Speaker 1: of optimism over experience. But nothing ever schewed those two
- 27:21Speaker 1: cops out, like the rich guy who wanted his parents
- 27:23Speaker 1: wasted at a bar mitzvah. You remember the really weird ones.
- 27:29Speaker 1: We'll see those two flat foots again that you can
- 27:33Speaker 1: better the rent. The cops guard the bar mitzvah, but
- 27:37Speaker 1: Neil's son and his manhood without gunplay. As time goes on, though,
- 27:42Speaker 1: the Woodman saga goes from outrageous to truly lunatic and
- 27:48Speaker 1: trying to wipe out his son's livelihoods, Jerry just bankrupts himself.
- 27:54Speaker 1: His rival company founders, and Jerry's fortunes go down with
- 27:57Speaker 1: the ship.
- 27:58Speaker 2: He lost everything, lost the house, he lost most Severe's jewelry,
- 28:03Speaker 2: he was living in a wrenched condo in Brentwood. Very
- 28:07Speaker 2: nice place, but a very big step down from where
- 28:09Speaker 2: he had been.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Neil and Stewart hope that bankrupt dad can't hurt them anymore.
- 28:17Speaker 1: But Jerry figures out a way to turn his company
- 28:19Speaker 1: debts into a plague on his son's for free.
- 28:24Speaker 2: So now he had a lot of time on his hands,
- 28:26Speaker 2: and he used that time to make life miserable for
- 28:28Speaker 2: his sons. If he needed a plumber at the house,
- 28:33Speaker 2: he'd call a plumber and say, send the build of
- 28:35Speaker 2: my sons. They had the bright idea of calling up
- 28:38Speaker 2: his creditors called him up and said, just send the
- 28:41Speaker 2: build of my sons.
- 28:42Speaker 4: They'll pay you this whole money with interest.
- 28:45Speaker 3: And they would call my father. My father would say,
- 28:48Speaker 3: call my son.
- 28:49Speaker 4: He's responsible.
- 28:50Speaker 6: You know.
- 28:50Speaker 3: We were just a division of my son's company. I
- 28:54Speaker 3: owned Manchester and I gave it to them and I
- 28:57Speaker 3: started this. But they own us, so they're responsible. We
- 29:00Speaker 3: had a ton of suppliers to cut us off.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Manchester's supply is now demand cash on delivery. The boys
- 29:09Speaker 1: don't have enough. The company is going down, just as
- 29:15Speaker 1: Jerry intended. They only see one way out as long
- 29:20Speaker 1: as Dad's alive, he'll torment them. So now you've got
- 29:27Speaker 1: the picture. Neil instear want Jerry dead and we all
- 29:30Speaker 1: know why. What about Vera? Isn't she just a victim.
- 29:34Speaker 7: We could fill the colisseum with people who could tell
- 29:37Speaker 7: you that Gerald was not a nice person. We never
- 29:41Speaker 7: found anybody who could say that Vera was not a
- 29:44Speaker 7: nice person.
- 29:45Speaker 1: The thing is, everybody who knows them knows the Woodman
- 29:48Speaker 1: boys want their dad six feet under. But maybe if
- 29:52Speaker 1: their mom is killed, it'll seem like a robbery, because
- 29:55Speaker 1: two sons having their innocent mom whacked would just be
- 29:58Speaker 1: too ugly to believe. But that's exactly what Stuart says
- 30:03Speaker 1: they did.
- 30:04Speaker 3: So it's just my father gonna kill them with much words.
- 30:07Speaker 3: It would point to us much more than if they
- 30:09Speaker 3: did both.
- 30:10Speaker 1: They settle on killing their parents on Young Kapaul because
- 30:14Speaker 1: on the day of atament they always go to that
- 30:17Speaker 1: family party. But Neil and Stewart know the cops will
- 30:24Speaker 1: lays her in on the dirty family laundry, so they've
- 30:27Speaker 1: covered their tracks. Won't be concerned all those phone calls
- 30:32Speaker 1: they've been making to trigger Man Steve Homan. The solution
- 30:36Speaker 1: pay phones.
- 30:39Speaker 2: The idea was not to be any show any link
- 30:42Speaker 2: between the Woodman brothers here in the San Fernando Valley
- 30:46Speaker 2: and Steve Hamick in Las Vegas, and they communicated by telephone.
- 30:53Speaker 2: And what would happen is Hamick would call the factory
- 30:58Speaker 2: and then Lee hang up, so there'd be no conversation,
- 31:03Speaker 2: and this would be a signal. So then the boys
- 31:05Speaker 2: would go to a payphone and they would call another
- 31:09Speaker 2: payphone by pre arrangement in Las Vegas, and they would talk.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Steve Homik and the Woodman spent so much time running
- 31:18Speaker 1: out the payphones. Passes by must have thought they were
- 31:21Speaker 1: remaking Superman. But here's the thing that gets me. These
- 31:25Speaker 1: guys were blowing tens of thousands of dollars on fur
- 31:28Speaker 1: coats and gambling, but they weren't even spring for the
- 31:30Speaker 1: roll of corners that would have taken to make those
- 31:32Speaker 1: conversations untraceable. They charged their calls back to the company.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Their hearts were black and they were stupid. In la
- 31:41Speaker 1: you could get away with either, but not both. By
- 31:54Speaker 1: nineteen eighty five, Vera and Jerry have lost the honor
- 31:57Speaker 1: of hosting the families annual Kaport dinner. Jerry's bankruptcy has
- 32:02Speaker 1: left them with no house to host it.
- 32:04Speaker 6: It.
- 32:05Speaker 1: He masks it, but it stings.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Brent was paid by his son in law and they
- 32:10Speaker 2: gave him walking around money. They gave him a couple
- 32:12Speaker 2: thousand dollars a week just so he'd have some money
- 32:15Speaker 2: in his pocket. It was a big fall from Grace.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Meanwhile, the Homok brothers are figuring young Kapaul will lead
- 32:26Speaker 1: to a big payday. Their plan is meticulous. Steve maps
- 32:31Speaker 1: out the route from Vera's sister's dinner in bel Air
- 32:34Speaker 1: to Jerry and Vera's Brentwood home. He arranged his lookouts
- 32:38Speaker 1: with walkie talking. Not confident that one lookout would be enough,
- 32:43Speaker 1: Steve Holmick had a backup no to aspiring hit meat.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Everyone you involved has a tongue that might wag one day. Luckily,
- 32:52Speaker 1: Mike Dominge's was a homicidal thug who generally.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Let slugs do his talking. Mike Domingu's was Stumber's dirt.
- 33:00Speaker 2: He was another guy who looked like he was sent
- 33:02Speaker 2: out by Central Casting for the part of a petty thug.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Domingas would do anything Hamiic told him to do, and
- 33:09Speaker 2: I'm sure that this was as much because he was
- 33:11Speaker 2: afraid of homic it is because it was a way
- 33:13Speaker 2: to make money. Steve Hammick and Mike Dominga's went into
- 33:18Speaker 2: a private home in Las Vegas, forced their way in
- 33:21Speaker 2: at gunpoint, told the woman who owned the house if
- 33:24Speaker 2: she didn't open her safe for her jewelry, they'd kill her.
- 33:27Speaker 2: When she opened the safe, they killed her, and they
- 33:30Speaker 2: killed the maid, and then they killed the ups man
- 33:32Speaker 2: who rang the doorbell. And they did this all for
- 33:35Speaker 2: what turned out to be five thousand dollars worth of
- 33:38Speaker 2: fake jewelry. You know, the five thousand dollars from melting
- 33:42Speaker 2: down the settings. They would kill you as soon as
- 33:45Speaker 2: look at you.
- 33:48Speaker 1: So Homig got company's plan is to pop Jerry and
- 33:51Speaker 1: Vera in the garage. Now, the only thing stopping Steve
- 33:56Speaker 1: Homick from getting into the garage in Jerry's building was
- 33:59Speaker 1: a bike chain. No problem for a master criminal like him.
- 34:05Speaker 1: So Homik slipped the chain and stuffed it into his bag.
- 34:08Speaker 1: But that riptile brain isn't so attuned to think it ahead.
- 34:12Speaker 1: He left the cut link where it fell. That metal
- 34:15Speaker 1: shod is no good to anyone except maybe a clever
- 34:18Speaker 1: cop looking for something to link criminals to a crime.
- 34:22Speaker 1: We'll get to that later. Right now, the dye has
- 34:24Speaker 1: been cast, the Titanics at full speed, and the iceberg
- 34:28Speaker 1: is not moving. It's hard to overstate how important Yam
- 34:39Speaker 1: Kapor is in the Jewish calendar. It's today you confront
- 34:43Speaker 1: your human weakness. You fast and offer supplications. You asked
- 34:47Speaker 1: card to accept you in spite of your flaws. At
- 34:50Speaker 1: sunset and the sound of the show for you start
- 34:54Speaker 1: anew and then you break your fast with a big
- 34:57Speaker 1: festive meal. If Jerry did any attime that day, there's
- 35:01Speaker 1: no record of what flaws he admitted to. I sure
- 35:04Speaker 1: hope his conscience was clear, because he and Vera would
- 35:07Speaker 1: be dead by sunrise. Deli owner Marvinsall shares that last
- 35:16Speaker 1: supper with the Woodman's we.
- 35:19Speaker 5: Were the last two people to see them alive. We
- 35:23Speaker 5: were all leaving and my wife said, you know, I
- 35:26Speaker 5: really like Jerry. Twenty minutes later they were dead.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Jerry's fancy cars are long time. Vera held on to
- 35:39Speaker 1: her Mercedes, but Jerry, of course takes the wheel. He
- 35:46Speaker 1: drives home in his usual mad rush. Too bad he
- 35:52Speaker 1: doesn't take a few extra minutes to make nice with
- 35:54Speaker 1: Vera forgive his sons and himself make his peace with God.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Jerry doesn't do anything like that. He drives fast, and
- 36:17Speaker 1: he's yelling right down to his last second. So the
- 37:04Speaker 1: Woodman family drama comes to a climax in a cheery
- 37:07Speaker 1: garage in Brentwood, California. There's nothing Shakespearean about it. Jerry's
- 37:13Speaker 1: no tragic hero and his killers are just thugs, dumb
- 37:18Speaker 1: thugs who alerted the whole neighborhood when that gun went off.
- 37:22Speaker 1: It was loud. A three point fifty seven magnum going
- 37:26Speaker 1: off in the garage sounds like a freaking cannon. Jerry
- 37:28Speaker 1: and Vera never had a chance, but killing them was easy.
- 37:31Speaker 1: The most important part of the plan was how to
- 37:33Speaker 1: get away with it. From the moment the slugs hit home,
- 37:36Speaker 1: that part of the plans started coming off the rails.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Mike di Mingas to look Out said he heard the
- 37:41Speaker 1: shots two blocks away. The Mingaz doesn't call the cops,
- 37:45Speaker 1: but everybody else in the earshot does.
- 37:49Speaker 2: If they had been professionals, they would have managed to
- 37:53Speaker 2: make their getaway without being seen.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Holmick has to get out of that garage like Greece Langney,
- 37:59Speaker 1: Steve forgets all about that piece of chain linked by
- 38:02Speaker 1: the gate. No time, there's a police station two blocks away.
- 38:07Speaker 1: The young Kapor murder of Jerry and Vera Woodman shocks La.
- 38:12Speaker 1: It's clearly a cold and calculated hit, an assassination that
- 38:17Speaker 1: doesn't look a bit like a robbery. That was the plan,
- 38:21Speaker 1: but investigator Richard Kratzley seized through it in a second.
- 38:25Speaker 6: Their jewelry was still all on them, nothing seemed to
- 38:30Speaker 6: be missing.
- 38:34Speaker 2: They had the keys in their pocket, the apartments full
- 38:37Speaker 2: of valuable things but had.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Not been touched at the time.
- 38:42Speaker 7: We didn't have the slightest idea why anybody would want
- 38:44Speaker 7: to hit these two old people, but it told us
- 38:47Speaker 7: that this was an execution murder.
- 38:49Speaker 5: Solda there very one of the nicest women who would
- 38:53Speaker 5: ever ever meet.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Who could possibly want this elderly couple whap don't even
- 39:00Speaker 1: have time to scratch their heads.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Maxine, who was Stuart and Neil's older sister, comes up
- 39:08Speaker 2: in her car and finds the police officers and immediately says.
- 39:12Speaker 4: We know who did this.
- 39:14Speaker 1: It was our brothers.
- 39:15Speaker 4: Who's our brother Stuart and brother Neil.
- 39:17Speaker 7: They were just emphatic that the two brothers had killed
- 39:23Speaker 7: Gerald and Vera, their mother and father. I mean, there
- 39:29Speaker 7: was no doubt in their minds that they had killed them.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Just like that, instant suspects. Exactly how Neil and Stuart
- 39:36Speaker 1: knew they'd be viewed.
- 39:39Speaker 3: I mean, we knew that within a couple of days
- 39:41Speaker 3: that the police are going to be talking to those
- 39:42Speaker 3: Because it's all of the newspapers, we couldn't hide the
- 39:48Speaker 3: fact that there was problems with the fancy.
- 39:52Speaker 1: It turns out there isn't much they can hide. The
- 39:55Speaker 1: Woodman Boys and Steve Homik think their plan is fool proof,
- 40:00Speaker 1: but the plan had some weak spots, starting with the
- 40:03Speaker 1: fools who made it. Investigators look for three things. Motive
- 40:10Speaker 1: means an opportunity. They had the motive from the get go.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Getting the other two will take some speed work. At
- 40:19Speaker 1: no time, detectives piled up a mountain of circumstantial evidence.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Note to the homicidal don't go around telling the world
- 40:28Speaker 1: how much you wish your victim was dead. I don't
- 40:32Speaker 1: know if acting innocent helps much if you're guilty, but
- 40:35Speaker 1: acting guilty is it's your way to help investigate his focus.
- 40:40Speaker 1: It seems that Neil and Stuart are strangely and curious
- 40:43Speaker 1: about their parents brutal murder.
- 40:46Speaker 6: It was probably a whole week. Stuart and' neil never
- 40:51Speaker 6: called the police department to inquire what happened to their parents.
- 40:56Speaker 6: And I worked homicide for fourteen years. I have never
- 41:00Speaker 6: had a murder victim's relatives not call me within an
- 41:05Speaker 6: hour the next day, as soon as they found out
- 41:08Speaker 6: that somebody had died. And then when we said, hey,
- 41:11Speaker 6: let's set up an appointment, well, they said, fine, we'll
- 41:14Speaker 6: have it at our attorney's office. Now, if you're not
- 41:18Speaker 6: guilty and you had nothing to do with the murder,
- 41:21Speaker 6: why would you have a corporate and a criminal attorney's
- 41:24Speaker 6: sitting next to you, and we're asking where were you
- 41:27Speaker 6: or the knight of the murders? Oh, he's not going
- 41:29Speaker 6: to answer that question. And then we kept thinking, these
- 41:35Speaker 6: guys are guilty. I mean, they are guilty. We just
- 41:38Speaker 6: have to prove it. I mean that's what it was.
- 41:43Speaker 1: So now's when those two retired flat foots reappear, the
- 41:46Speaker 1: ones who were told to blow away Grandma and grandpa
- 41:49Speaker 1: if they laid siege to the woodman Paul Mitzvah, remember
- 41:54Speaker 1: them when they see the headlines about the young Kapor murder.
- 41:58Speaker 1: They give the homicide dick a name. The guy who
- 42:01Speaker 1: posted them outside the Syennegague, Steve Homock.
- 42:05Speaker 6: I kept thinking, well, let's run with him. He's our
- 42:08Speaker 6: only suspect right now. And that's what we did. Steve
- 42:11Speaker 6: Hommick became number one suspect.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Steve can't be placed at the crime scene right away.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Put his brother showcat. A witness says he distinctly remembers
- 42:21Speaker 1: Robert Homock near the Woodman's condo. His scruffy look made
- 42:25Speaker 1: him plenty memorable. And the CSI team finds that cut
- 42:29Speaker 1: chain link in the bushes.
- 42:32Speaker 6: Whoops, the chain link was sawed in half. Somebody from
- 42:36Speaker 6: our crime lab said, you find me the boat cutters.
- 42:39Speaker 6: You know I might be able to correspond those tool marks.
- 42:44Speaker 6: So and we did our search warrants. Lo and behold
- 42:48Speaker 6: where we find the boat cutters. Robert Hammick.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Not only were the cutters found in his home, cops
- 42:53Speaker 1: found the receipt that showed he bought them at the
- 42:56Speaker 1: hardware store just down the street. Does it get any easy?
- 43:00Speaker 6: Yeah, Robert Hamick was done.
- 43:03Speaker 1: You got Robert, you got Steve. All that's left is
- 43:06Speaker 1: to connect the brothers. Homemick to Neil and Stuart Woodman,
- 43:10Speaker 1: and who was better at making connections than the phone company.
- 43:14Speaker 2: The police made a very detailed study of payphone records
- 43:19Speaker 2: from payphones in the area surrounding the factory out in
- 43:22Speaker 2: the valley, and they found that all of these phone
- 43:27Speaker 2: booths were within a mile or so of the plastics factory.
- 43:31Speaker 2: If you plotted them on a map, it was almost
- 43:33Speaker 2: a perfect circle, with the factory at the center. The
- 43:36Speaker 2: problem with the plot was the boys used their company
- 43:38Speaker 2: credit card when they made these calls from the phone boots.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Pretty smart. If they had a roll of quarters, they
- 43:46Speaker 2: probably would have got away with it.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Mob Bell witness for the prosecution. In the end, it
- 43:54Speaker 1: was the quiet one who started singing. When cops picked
- 43:56Speaker 1: up Mike Domingez, he learned from them that his future
- 43:59Speaker 1: looked blue gas chamber bleak. That is, unless he had
- 44:03Speaker 1: something to trade. It turned out he did. He gives
- 44:07Speaker 1: up the whole enchilada motive means an opportunity. The cops
- 44:13Speaker 1: have their homicidal trifecta.
- 44:16Speaker 7: He told us that he and Steve had flown into
- 44:19Speaker 7: Los Angeles a couple of days before the murder. They
- 44:23Speaker 7: had traced the route with Robert Hamig.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Marvin Wolf follows every step of the trial. In fact,
- 44:30Speaker 1: he goes out to write a book about the Woodman's
- 44:32Speaker 1: blood feud.
- 44:34Speaker 2: When these guys come in and sit down from a distance,
- 44:38Speaker 2: they're just, you know, sort of indistinct figures. But if
- 44:42Speaker 2: you sit there and you look at their faces, the
- 44:45Speaker 2: hair on the back of your head tests to stand up.
- 44:48Speaker 2: These are animals. There's something less than human about them.
- 44:51Speaker 2: That was my gut feeling about them. These guys scared
- 44:55Speaker 2: the hell out of me.
- 44:57Speaker 1: There's only one question left. Who's going to crack the
- 45:01Speaker 1: jellyfish or the snake? Do you swear to tell the truth,
- 45:06Speaker 1: It's the jellyfish. Stuart hasn't the spine to face that throat.
- 45:11Speaker 1: He offers to trade Neil's ass for his own life.
- 45:14Speaker 1: His confession runs for ten hours, and he lays it
- 45:17Speaker 1: all out on a platter. His version.
- 45:19Speaker 8: Anyhow, my wife and I were both involved, called as witnesses,
- 45:24Speaker 8: and I was totally shocked. When Stuart was convicted, then
- 45:31Speaker 8: I was flabbergasted. He then turned around and identified his
- 45:37Speaker 8: brother as being his co conspirator.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Stuart testified that Neil was the brains behind the operation,
- 45:45Speaker 1: adding insult to a life of incarceration. In the end,
- 45:50Speaker 1: Neil and Stuart both got life without parole.
- 45:53Speaker 8: As a rabbi, I'm always teaching people that they need
- 45:56Speaker 8: to not let their circumstances define who they are. That
- 46:00Speaker 8: whether the circumstances are good or the circumstances are horrific,
- 46:03Speaker 8: you can find people who transcended them and who've made
- 46:05Speaker 8: different choices. And you know that here is one of
- 46:08Speaker 8: the issues. That they had everything, these guys, Neil and Stuart,
- 46:13Speaker 8: they had everything. They had money, they had beautiful wives,
- 46:16Speaker 8: they had wonderful kids, they had great families.
- 46:19Speaker 1: They had everything that they to throw away, and they did.
- 46:22Speaker 6: I think her insurance policy and the hatred for the
- 46:25Speaker 6: father was the reason that the boys got in so
- 46:29Speaker 6: deep in money matters that let's take out mom, collect
- 46:34Speaker 6: the money. We hate dad, and we'll take out dad too,
- 46:36Speaker 6: and then we've got everything. We've got the company, we've
- 46:39Speaker 6: got the insurance money, and we're out of debt and
- 46:41Speaker 6: we own the company and we're good.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Stuart and Neil gave their father back what he gave them.
- 46:49Speaker 2: He took their lives from them in a certain way.
- 46:53Speaker 2: It's true he gave them many things, but he also
- 46:55Speaker 2: took away a lot of things, and their revenge was
- 46:59Speaker 2: to take his life.
- 47:02Speaker 3: I had no feelings about my father.
- 47:05Speaker 4: There's just no feelings about it.
- 47:07Speaker 3: My kids won't know my mother than ever to visit
- 47:09Speaker 3: to see her.
- 47:10Speaker 4: I'll never be able to see her again. And then Dad,
- 47:12Speaker 4: I got upset about But you paid two people to
- 47:14Speaker 4: ever kill.
- 47:15Speaker 1: I don't know what I did.
- 47:22Speaker 7: I know what.
- 47:24Speaker 1: The Lookout team, Mike do Mingez and Robert Homick got
- 47:28Speaker 1: twenty five to life. Steve Homock, the trigger Man, he
- 47:32Speaker 1: got sentenced to death, but twenty five years later, he's
- 47:36Speaker 1: still on the waiting list at San Quentin. Stewart has
- 47:40Speaker 1: asked for parole and been turned down a half a
- 47:42Speaker 1: dozen times. Nia still says he's innocent, but that's between
- 47:46Speaker 1: him and God. For him and for the rest of
- 47:50Speaker 1: that sorry lot, every day can be a day of atonement.
- 47:53Speaker 1: And may God have mercy on them, because it doesn't
- 47:56Speaker 1: look like the state of California is going to get
- 47:58Speaker 1: around to its
- 48:18Speaker 4: Ut
