- 0:00Good morning, family.
- 0:07Good morning, guys.
- 0:14This is Cliff.
- 0:16You're a tall man.
- 0:23So it happens when you're short.
- 0:30All right.
- 0:31If you guys would please turn to Philippians chapter 4.
- 0:35We start our journey at the end of this wonderful letter.
- 0:42All right.
- 0:43Let's pray.
- 0:44Father, I want to thank you so much for your goodness and faithfulness.
- 0:47Thank you that you are whole and that you are strong.
- 0:51Thank you that you are holy and good.
- 0:55Lord, that you guide us in truth, Holy Spirit.
- 0:59That you are so faithful to feed your people our spiritual manna,
- 1:07our spiritual food that will continue to nourish us.
- 1:11Lord, I pray that we would partake at your table every day.
- 1:17And most of all, that we will enjoy your presence.
- 1:21Lord, we thank you and praise you that you abide in us and us in you.
- 1:26And we in the Father.
- 1:30And so, Lord, I just ask that your word would speak.
- 1:35That you would guide us in the full counsel of your word.
- 1:39And that, Lord, by your grace I would rightly handle it for your glory.
- 1:43We praise you and thank you.
- 1:44In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:45A really good understanding of this wonderful letter that God has called,
- 1:50again, us to be good Bereans, study the word of God,
- 1:54and to be good Philippians, live the word of God.
- 1:57And you'll see this clearly in Paul's statement in chapter 4, verse 1.
- 2:04So chapter 3, verse 17,
- 2:06Brothers, join in imitating me and keep your eyes on those who walk
- 2:12according to the example you have in us.
- 2:16For many of whom I often have told you and now tell you even with tears,
- 2:22walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.
- 2:25Their end is destruction, their God is their belly,
- 2:29they glory in their shame with minds set on earthly things.
- 2:35But our citizenship is in heaven,
- 2:38and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
- 2:42who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body
- 2:48by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
- 2:54Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown,
- 3:02stand firm thus in the Lord my beloved.
- 3:06Now, that's really where the thought ends.
- 3:12I'm a little confused why they would put chapter 4 there
- 3:17and just not start chapter 4 at I entreat, but they don't.
- 3:23That's okay, right?
- 3:26But I want you to understand something.
- 3:28He says therefore.
- 3:29Therefore means all the things that we just got done talking about
- 3:34that you're imitating him,
- 3:37that you're also following the examples that were laid out for you,
- 3:41that your citizenship is in heaven,
- 3:44and that we await a Savior from there,
- 3:46that your bodies will be transformed,
- 3:49that you will have a glorious body like you do,
- 3:52you will have a brand new, uncorruptible body,
- 3:56and the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself,
- 4:01the reality is that God is completely sovereign.
- 4:04And if those things are true, therefore, stand firm in the Lord.
- 4:11Principle number one, God entreats, he calls.
- 4:16When God calls, he commands.
- 4:19When God commands, you do.
- 4:22That is your responsibility.
- 4:25So when God entreats us, he calls us.
- 4:27And when he calls us, he commands us.
- 4:29When he commands, you are to obey.
- 4:34Now, the word entreat means to earnestly beseech,
- 4:39implore, beg, or petition.
- 4:43That's according to dictionary.com and Webster's 1882.
- 4:47It's a very good definition actually.
- 4:50And why does he entreat?
- 4:53Why does he implore us or beg us or petition us?
- 4:57The first thing he entreats us to do is that we stand firm.
- 5:04We stand firm in the Lord.
- 5:07Don't be tossed to and fro.
- 5:10Stand firm.
- 5:11I want you to see Paul's heart for the Philippians.
- 5:15I've told you that out of all the churches that Paul has established
- 5:21and has preached and has taught,
- 5:25the Philippian church is the church.
- 5:29They are the main example.
- 5:32Very important.
- 5:34Now, he says that they are his joy and crown.
- 5:39In other words, out of all the churches, you are the pinnacle.
- 5:45Not perfect, not that they don't make mistakes,
- 5:49but there's no open rebuke for their bad behavior.
- 5:53They have committed to the ways of Christ.
- 5:56They have committed their lives to the gospel of Christ.
- 5:59They have committed their lives to the God of all creation,
- 6:03Christ Jesus, the Father, the Holy Spirit.
- 6:06They are fully committed.
- 6:08And so he is the crown jewel, the Philippian church, the crown jewel.
- 6:13He longs to see them.
- 6:15He loves them deeply.
- 6:17And they are an absolute joy to him.
- 6:21A lot of times when I grew up as a kid, I always wondered why my mom,
- 6:25I felt like my mom didn't give me all the attention that I wanted
- 6:29because she was so busy giving my brother attention.
- 6:33Well, I understand why.
- 6:36I'm not the one who gave her all the hard time.
- 6:39I was the crown jewel.
- 6:41Not an issue of pride or being conceited.
- 6:44The reality is that in my faithfulness to love my mom
- 6:49as best as I could without Christ, she didn't have to worry about me.
- 6:55And that's very similar to what Paul is saying here.
- 6:58You're my joy. You're my crown jewel.
- 7:00I don't have to worry about you.
- 7:02So he entreats them.
- 7:05First entreatment is to stand firm in the Lord.
- 7:10Second, he goes on in verse 2 and says,
- 7:13I entreat Euodia and I entreat Suntuke.
- 7:20You're like, where did you get Suntuke from?
- 7:23Well, that's her name.
- 7:25Her name is Suntuke.
- 7:27I'll explain it to you in a minute.
- 7:29To agree in the Lord.
- 7:31So he entreats both Euodia and Suntuke to agree in the Lord.
- 7:39So anytime you see S-Y-N in Greek or the letter Y,
- 7:44the letter Y is U.
- 7:47Suntuke.
- 7:51Don't ask me.
- 7:54It's U and that's the way it is.
- 7:57English language does all kinds of craziness.
- 8:00We do all kinds of acrobatic verbiage and sounds.
- 8:05So Suntuke, to agree in the Lord.
- 8:09Very interesting.
- 8:10This word agree means to be of the same mind or to be harmonious,
- 8:15which really fits to what Paul says earlier in the letter.
- 8:21That we should be of the same mind of that of Christ.
- 8:25Chapter 2, verse 5.
- 8:27Have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus.
- 8:33If we're going to have the same mind of Christ,
- 8:36then we need to make sure that we maintain, keep, agree.
- 8:41That we will be harmonious.
- 8:44That's the point.
- 8:46So he's telling Euodia and Suntuke, fix this.
- 8:52This is not something that should be a problem.
- 8:55There's a reason why he tells them this.
- 8:58So that's entreatment number two.
- 9:01First, stand firm.
- 9:03Second, they need to agree in the Lord.
- 9:06Third, yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women.
- 9:15Treatment number three.
- 9:18We, as God's church, are to help these women.
- 9:23You're like, well, it says companion.
- 9:25The word here really implies this idea of companions.
- 9:31That if we are of one mind and we are the body of Christ,
- 9:35then we are a true companion.
- 9:38Interesting.
- 9:39I ask you.
- 9:41I entreat you.
- 9:43I implore you.
- 9:45I beseech you.
- 9:47My true suzugos.
- 9:49So this word suzugos means those united by bond of relationship,
- 9:54labor, or of a yoke fellow, a consort, a comrade, a colleague,
- 10:01or a partner.
- 10:03So as God's family, as the body of Christ, we are laborers,
- 10:09partners, comrades, colleagues in this too.
- 10:15It's important as a church because when we see brothers and sisters
- 10:19messing up, our responsibility as the body of Christ is to come
- 10:24alongside.
- 10:25That's difficult because not everybody wants you to come
- 10:28alongside.
- 10:29But your responsibility as a true companion is to help these women.
- 10:38We do that quite often.
- 10:40It's one of the reasons why we do church discipline and work with
- 10:44people to reconcile relationships.
- 10:48There is more at stake here than your opinion about things.
- 10:55And this is what he says concerning Euodia and Suntuke.
- 11:02He says, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together
- 11:09with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers?
- 11:16You have to maintain the unity of the faith.
- 11:21Your testimony and the testimony of the church is at stake.
- 11:26The work that has been accomplished for the gospel will be marred if
- 11:32you do not continue to love one another.
- 11:36They will know you're my disciples if you have love one for another.
- 11:42If there is no love one for another, then there is a loss in that
- 11:47relationship.
- 11:49What a terrible testimony.
- 11:52That's important reason number one.
- 11:55Important reason number two, because your names are in the book of
- 11:59life.
- 12:00Not only should you help encourage, entreat reconciliation and healing,
- 12:08but you should because your names are in the book.
- 12:13You're part of the family.
- 12:16It blows my mind when people have a very difficult time grasping these
- 12:22truths.
- 12:23They're more concerned about what they quote unquote believe instead
- 12:27of really understanding and committing to the obedience of the word.
- 12:32They have a very distorted and misunderstanding of what truth is.
- 12:37They've determined for themselves what truth is.
- 12:41And so they live lives that are contrary to the word.
- 12:49Paul entreats them.
- 12:51God entreats them.
- 12:53Second principle.
- 12:54To live in gentleness is to show you have the mind of Christ.
- 12:59To live in gentleness is to show you have the mind of Christ.
- 13:03In verse four and five a, he exhorts.
- 13:08God exhorts.
- 13:09Exhortation.
- 13:11To address or communicate emphatically urging someone to do something.
- 13:17The act or practice of exhorting.
- 13:20The act of inciting a laudable deed.
- 13:24Incitement to that which is good or commendable.
- 13:29To give advice or counsel.
- 13:32That's what exhortation means.
- 13:35Listen to this.
- 13:36Pretty amazing.
- 13:37That was Webster's 1828.
- 13:39Rejoice in the Lord.
- 13:41It's not just about rejoicing.
- 13:44It's about rejoicing because of your position with God.
- 13:48You rejoice because your name is written in the Lamb's book of life.
- 13:53Let's go back and read verse three.
- 13:57Yes.
- 13:58I ask you also true companion.
- 14:00Help these women who labored side by side with me in the gospel together with
- 14:04Clement and the rest of my fellow workers.
- 14:08Whose names are written in the book of life.
- 14:10Rejoice in the Lord always.
- 14:12Again I say rejoice.
- 14:15Your name is in the book.
- 14:19Do you get the point why he says it now?
- 14:21It's not just rejoice because you're going through hard times.
- 14:24It's rejoicing because you're part of the family.
- 14:27It's specific.
- 14:30Then he says in this amazing two verses, let your reasonableness, your
- 14:36gentleness, your gentle spirit be known to everyone.
- 14:40If you know your name is in the Lamb's book of life, you are rejoicing
- 14:45because you're part of the family, then be gentle.
- 14:49Chapter two, verse six, who though he was in the form of God did not count
- 14:58equality with God a thing to be grasped but emptied himself by taking the form
- 15:03of a servant, being born in the likeness of man, being found in human form,
- 15:07became obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross.
- 15:12It's the gentleness of God.
- 15:14It's the mindset that Christ has.
- 15:17That's the point.
- 15:19To live in gentleness is to show you have the mind of Christ.
- 15:26What an amazing thought.
- 15:30Do we really grasp that understanding here?
- 15:34To let your gentleness be known to everyone.
- 15:37The only way that man will know, that the world will know that we are his is
- 15:42we are gentle with one another, that we are loving and understanding.
- 15:46We don't got to agree on everything.
- 15:49But the one thing we do have to do is love each other well.
- 15:55I don't want you to agree with me on everything.
- 15:57I want you to prove it.
- 16:00Give me biblical proof as your pastor why you believe what you believe.
- 16:06And if you can't, then we need to talk.
- 16:09That's the point.
- 16:12He says let your reasonableness, your gentleness, your gentle spirit be known
- 16:16by how you love and reconcile and care and not put your own needs first.
- 16:23Last principle.
- 16:25To know he is near is to have full confidence he will keep his promises.
- 16:32To know he is near is to have full confidence he will keep his promises.
- 16:37I want you to get this.
- 16:38This is important.
- 16:41This is Philippians 4, 5B to 7.
- 16:47Encouragement is the principle here, is the word that's used here.
- 16:53Encouragement.
- 16:55Encouragement is the action of giving someone support.
- 16:59To build confidence or hope.
- 17:02To the act of giving courage or competence of success.
- 17:07To the excitement to action and to practice.
- 17:12The incentive.
- 17:14The idea here.
- 17:18This is what he says.
- 17:20The Lord is at hand.
- 17:22Do not be anxious about anything but in everything by prayer and supplication.
- 17:29This is not the Lord is at hand because he is close to his return.
- 17:34Not what this word means here.
- 17:37Kind of not happy with this word at hand.
- 17:41I wish it could have been translated a little bit better.
- 17:43The Lord is near.
- 17:47It's the word engus.
- 17:50Engus means near or of a place and position.
- 17:55The access to God.
- 17:58That makes a lot more sense now.
- 18:01Because many would say, see the Lord is near.
- 18:04You got to be ready.
- 18:06Not taking out of context.
- 18:09The Lord is close.
- 18:11The Lord is in a position near you.
- 18:14The Lord is you have access to him.
- 18:17And if you have access to him, don't be anxious.
- 18:21Now think about that.
- 18:23So when he says do not be anxious about anything, what he's saying is that God is in you.
- 18:29God lives in you.
- 18:31Christ is in you.
- 18:33He cannot be any more near than abiding in the tent of your body.
- 18:39The word, the idea here is that he is so close by.
- 18:45You have instant access all the time.
- 18:50So if that's true, he gives us an imperative.
- 18:56You know what an imperative is?
- 18:58A command.
- 19:00Do not be anxious about anything.
- 19:06Imperative.
- 19:08But in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving.
- 19:13Imperative.
- 19:14Let your requests be known to God.
- 19:17Imperative.
- 19:18Imperative.
- 19:19Imperative.
- 19:20Three imperatives here.
- 19:22Do, do, do.
- 19:24Do not do this.
- 19:25Do that.
- 19:26Do this.
- 19:27With this.
- 19:28Do this.
- 19:29How many times have we gone to God because we're anxious and go, man, I hope he hears
- 19:34me.
- 19:35That's not knowing that God is near.
- 19:38That's thinking he's far away.
- 19:43He is not far.
- 19:46So now we understand clearly because the Lord is close near, because we have access to him
- 19:52instantaneously all the time, he is with me.
- 19:56He is in me.
- 19:57I in him.
- 19:59And we in the Father.
- 20:02I can and don't have to.
- 20:05I can go to him about anything.
- 20:07I do not have to be anxious about anything.
- 20:10Anxiety is not an option for the believer.
- 20:15Let that stuff go.
- 20:18Do not be anxious about anything.
- 20:21But pray.
- 20:24And bring supplication.
- 20:26And be thankful for it.
- 20:28Why?
- 20:29Because you are in the Lamb's Book of Life.
- 20:31Why?
- 20:32Because I have access to God.
- 20:34Why?
- 20:35Because I'm a child of the living God.
- 20:37Why?
- 20:38Because I'm part of the family.
- 20:41I can go.
- 20:43And no, he will take away my anxiety.
- 20:46And that's what he says here.
- 20:48That if we do these things, if we don't be anxious, if we pray, if we bring supplication
- 20:53and we're thankful, and we bring our requests to him, this is what he will do.
- 21:00Not will he, will he maybe.
- 21:02He absolutely will.
- 21:04And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
- 21:14You notice there's a major theme in many of the letters of the New Testament.
- 21:21The mind.
- 21:24The battle is in the mind.
- 21:27You will give into sin and you will continue to lose and be defeated in your life because you have made up your mind to lose.
- 21:39Because you have not understood God's will for your life.
- 21:44Romans 12, 2.
- 21:46Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind so you can test and approve what God's will is, it's good, pleasing, and perfect will.
- 21:55You can know his will.
- 21:58Secondly, to clarify the reality of this, Jesus gives us this statement.
- 22:07Matthew 11.
- 22:11He says in verse 25 to 20, to 30.
- 22:14Matthew 11, 25 to 30.
- 22:17And I'll show you how this links contextually.
- 22:21At that time Jesus declared, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise in understanding and revealed them to the little children.
- 22:34To little children.
- 22:35Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
- 22:41All these, all things have been handed over to me by my Father.
- 22:47All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
- 22:54All things.
- 22:56Not little bits.
- 22:58All.
- 23:00Now I want you to get that.
- 23:02Satan does not have dominion.
- 23:05The living God has dominion.
- 23:08He is totally and completely sovereign in all things, and the Son of God has been given all things by the Father.
- 23:16No one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
- 23:23And this is what he says.
- 23:25Now I want you to get the same idea here.
- 23:28This statement is the same idea that Paul's implying in Do Not Be Anxious About Anything.
- 23:35Look what he says, come to me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.
- 23:47Come to me with all your junk.
- 23:50Do not be anxious about anything.
- 23:53Come to me.
- 23:54But in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving.
- 23:58Come to me.
- 23:59Let your requests be known to God.
- 24:01Come to me.
- 24:05Then look what he says.
- 24:06Life is not burdenless.
- 24:08God does not promise to take away burden from your life.
- 24:12He promises to take away your unnecessary burdens.
- 24:17Burdens that are too heavy for you to carry.
- 24:21So if he takes your burdens, he doesn't leave you without something to carry.
- 24:25Are you ready for this?
- 24:28It's called, this is where you get peace.
- 24:31All right, here we go.
- 24:33Learn from me for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
- 24:45What does he give us to carry?
- 24:49His truth.
- 24:51There's a responsibility.
- 24:53His word.
- 24:57The peace of God.
- 24:59It's not heavy.
- 25:01It's freeing.
- 25:03It surpasses all understanding.
- 25:05And God will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
- 25:12Why?
- 25:13For his yoke is easy and his burden is light.
- 25:17It's not too heavy.
- 25:20We don't go through life not having responsibility.
- 25:24We don't go through life not carrying something.
- 25:28He carries all the heavy stuff.
- 25:31And more.
- 25:33And what does he give us?
- 25:35Peace.
- 25:36Joy.
- 25:38Love.
- 25:39Patience.
- 25:40Kindness.
- 25:41Goodness.
- 25:42Gentleness.
- 25:43Self control.
- 25:44And we struggle with those things.
- 25:47Do you not?
- 25:49Do they feel like a burden?
- 25:52To live a godly life, does it feel burdensome?
- 25:56We make it burdensome.
- 25:59Because we think, I can't do that.
- 26:02With Christ, you can do that.
- 26:05With Christ, the all things are possible or all his things are possible.
- 26:13All his promises that are for you are possible.
- 26:17They are yes.
- 26:18All those are worth carrying in your life.
- 26:25So I hope we kind of grasp Philippians 4, verse 1 through 7 now.
- 26:34God first and foremost entreats us, implores us to keep the faith, to stand firm in the Lord,
- 26:42to encourage each other to reconcile and work and to live in harmony with one another.
- 26:52He then exhorts us that we should rejoice in him.
- 26:57Why?
- 26:58Because we are part of the family of God.
- 27:00Our names are in the book.
- 27:02And that we should walk in gentleness so that everyone can see it.
- 27:07And then he encourages us that we trust him because he is close and near.
- 27:14And that all of the things that we have in our life, all of our anxieties, we can bring to him.
- 27:21And that he commands us not to be anxious.
- 27:27And we should pray and bring supplication and be thankful and let our requests be known to him.
- 27:35He knows what you need before you ask.

- 27:57Father, I want to thank you so much for your goodness and faithfulness.
- 28:01Lord, we give you praise.
- 28:03Thank you that you have entreated us and begged us to trust in you.
- 28:10You have begged us to keep the unity of the faith, to reconcile with each other.
- 28:17You have exhorted us to rejoice in you and to be gentle so that all may see that we are your people.
- 28:26You have encouraged us to trust you in every way, not to be anxious because you are near.
- 28:36But in prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, make our requests known to you.
- 28:40And as a result, Lord, you give us peace.
- 28:43Lord, we praise you.
- 28:44We thank you.
- 28:45You are faithful, good, and true.
- 28:48In Jesus' name, Amen.
