- 0:00Chapter 7 from the book of Esther.
- 0:03Dear Lord, please help us as we go through this chapter.
- 0:08Give us wisdom and insight. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:14This is about Haman being impaled.
- 0:17So the king and Haman went to Queen Esther's banquet, and as
- 0:23they were drinking wine on the second day, the king asked
- 0:27again. Asked Queen Esther, what is your
- 0:30petition? It will be given to you.
- 0:32What is your request? Even up to half the Kingdom it
- 0:35will be granted. Then Queen Esther answered, If I
- 0:39have found favor with you, your Majesty, and if it pleases you,
- 0:42grant me life. This is my petition, and spare
- 0:46my people. This is my request, for I and my
- 0:51people have been sold to be destroyed, killed, and
- 0:56annihilated. If we had merely been sold as
- 1:01male and female slaves, I would have kept quiet, because no such
- 1:06distress would justify disturbing the king.
- 1:11King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, Who is he?
- 1:14Where is he, the man who has dared to do such a thing?
- 1:18Esther said. An adversary and enemy, this
- 1:22vile Haman. Then Haman was terrified before
- 1:27the king and queen. The king got up in a rage, left
- 1:31his wine, and went out into the palace garden.
- 1:35But Haman, realizing that the king had already decided his
- 1:39fate, stayed behind to beg Queen Esther for his life.
- 1:44Just as the king returned from the palace garden to the banquet
- 1:48hall, Haman was falling on the couch where Esther was
- 1:52reclining. The king exclaimed.
- 1:55Will he even molest the queen while she is with me in the
- 1:59house? As soon as the word left the
- 2:02King's mouth, they covered Haman's face.
- 2:05Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said a pole
- 2:11reaching to a height of 50 cubits stands by Haman's house.
- 2:17He had set it up for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king.
- 2:22The king said impale him on it. So they impaled Haman on the
- 2:27pole he had set up for Mordecai. Then the King's fury subsided.
- 2:34That's the end of Chapter 7. I will read the questions and
- 2:39answers for this one. Would Xerxes really have given
- 2:42Esther half the Kingdom? Probably not.
- 2:45Xerxes oath to Esther appears to have been a stop stock phrase
- 2:51used by ancient monarchs to express favor and was probably
- 2:56not intended to be taken literally.
- 2:59Would Esther really have kept quiet at being sold into
- 3:02slavery? Slavery in the ancient Near East
- 3:06did not carry the same dreaded connotations it bears today, so
- 3:11it is entirely possible that Esther would not have risked
- 3:14death at the threat of slavery. Further, Esther might have been
- 3:18hinting that it was in Xerxes own best interest to prevent the
- 3:23Jews, who were productive workers in the in his realm from
- 3:27being annihilated. Why didn't Xerxes remember that
- 3:34he had authorized the annihilation of the Jews?
- 3:37Historical records outside the Bible depict Xerxes as a cruel
- 3:42tyrant. He would not have hesitated to
- 3:45exterminate an entire race of people at the whim of a favored
- 3:49deputy. However, he may not have been
- 3:52aware that the deal he had approved was to destroy the
- 3:55Jews. Haman had told him only that a
- 4:00italicized certain people with different customs were not
- 4:04obeying the king, and Xerxes had given Haman his signet ring to
- 4:08finish the necessary paperwork in his name, Xerx.
- 4:12Xerxes didn't bother to learn the details.
- 4:15Furthermore, Xerxes did not know that Esther was a Jew, nor did
- 4:20Haman. When Esther, having gone to
- 4:22great lengths to gain the King's favour, told Xerxes that her
- 4:27people would be destroyed because of Haman's order, the
- 4:32volatile king repaid his deputy as he deserved.
- 4:37Why did they cover Haman's face? It was customary among the
- 4:41Greeks and the Romans to cover the face of a person sentenced
- 4:44to death. So it's reasonable to assume
- 4:46that it was also a practice of the earlier Persians, the
- 4:50attendants who were present and covered Haymans face as soon as
- 4:53possible or as soon as the word left the King's mouth,
- 4:57presumably the execution order. And that's the end of Chapter 7.
- 5:04And there was some, there were a couple verses that came to mind
- 5:09reading this and it was it was about sowing and reaping.
- 5:13And back in the book of Job chapter 4 verse 8, it said, he
- 5:18says, as I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow
- 5:26trouble reap it. And then in James chapter 3
- 5:32verse 18, it says peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest
- 5:39of righteousness. So it's kind of like what we do
- 5:44is what we will receive. And in Hosea chapter 10, verse
- 5:5012, it says sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit
- 5:55of unfailing love and break up your unplowed ground, for it is
- 6:02time to seek the Lord until He comes and showers his
- 6:07righteousness on you. That really sounds prophetic to
- 6:11me from that verse. So anyway, this is very timely
- 6:16about what's going on in the world right now.
- 6:18And you know, we should all keep in mind that what we sow, we
- 6:23will reap in the end. If you're not subscribed, please
- 6:29do so. An if you find this beneficial,
- 6:31please share this with others. Thank you.
