- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory. We
- 0:03Speaker 1: are coming off a rollicking opening weekend of Major League Baseball.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We have a ton to get to. I want to
- 0:11Speaker 1: go through the things that struck me the most. We
- 0:13Speaker 1: could really sit here all day and talk about that,
- 0:15Speaker 1: but I'll go through my highlights. Obviously it's not going
- 0:18Speaker 1: to be a complete list, So don't start complaining, what
- 0:21Speaker 1: about this? What about that? No, we're not doing that.
- 0:24Speaker 1: We're going to try to get through as much as possible, though,
- 0:26Speaker 1: because a lot of cool things have happened. All right,
- 0:29Speaker 1: let's start with the series that I was at, the
- 0:31Speaker 1: Yankees Giant Series. Yankees look great. They allowed one run
- 0:35Speaker 1: in three games, swept the series. As I said on
- 0:38Speaker 1: the broadcast on Saturday, the thing that impresses me most
- 0:41Speaker 1: about the Yankees is obviously, yes, their team on the
- 0:44Speaker 1: field is very good, but the depth that they have
- 0:47Speaker 1: in their organization with players on the injured list, Garrett
- 0:51Speaker 1: Cole and Carlos Rodin and Clark Schmidt, and then prospects
- 0:55Speaker 1: who are close to the majors And who am I
- 0:57Speaker 1: talking about Carlos Legrange, the other pitcher, Elma Rodriguez. Excuse me,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and then the outfielders Jason Domingiez, I know, we struggled
- 1:06Speaker 1: on that ball at TRIPLEA the other day. Off the wall,
- 1:08Speaker 1: Spencer Jones, George Lombard, Cumming and others. They are in
- 1:12Speaker 1: a position where if injuries strike, as they inevitably will,
- 1:17Speaker 1: they're in a reasonably good spot to carry on without
- 1:21Speaker 1: much loss. Obviously, you lose a judge or a stand
- 1:24Speaker 1: and that's a big deal. But that's what I like
- 1:26Speaker 1: about the Yankees. And obviously their offense, which was one
- 1:29Speaker 1: of the best in the elite game last year, is
- 1:32Speaker 1: back and still rather potent. The Giants, we're gonna be
- 1:35Speaker 1: talking about them a lot this season. They need to hit,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and if they're not going to hit, then the whole
- 1:40Speaker 1: thing is not going to work. It's three games. No
- 1:43Speaker 1: one should be panicking yet, Let's see how this plays
- 1:45Speaker 1: out for them. They faced some great pitching Freed and
- 1:48Speaker 1: Schlitler and Warren. The Yankee starters were really good, though
- 1:52Speaker 1: not quite as good, perhaps as the Blue Jays starters
- 1:55Speaker 1: in their season opening sweep of the Athletics. Let's look
- 1:59Speaker 1: at something right here that really impressed me about the
- 2:02Speaker 1: Blue Jays and kind of an unsung thing right now
- 2:05Speaker 1: about where they are. Perhaps we all thought their rotation
- 2:08Speaker 1: would be good. This good, though, I'm not so sure.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Look at the strikeout totals for each of their starters
- 2:14Speaker 1: in this opening series. And Eric Lawer is not at
- 2:18Speaker 1: the level, of course of Gossman and Cease. But my goodness,
- 2:22Speaker 1: eleven for Gossman, twelve for Seas, nine for Lower thirty.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Two strikeouts in sixteen and two thirds innings for the
- 2:30Speaker 1: Blue Jays rotation. That is pretty good, all right? Elsewhere
- 2:35Speaker 1: excuse me elsewhere? Blue Jays, Yes, they've been great. The
- 2:39Speaker 1: Brewers too. I know. They had an inferior opponent in
- 2:43Speaker 1: the Chicago White Sox, and they came back on Sunday.
- 2:46Speaker 1: They did some really good things in that series. They
- 2:48Speaker 1: are the Brewers of old again, even with their pitching questions,
- 2:52Speaker 1: already a two game lead up on the Cubs, and
- 2:55Speaker 1: the Cubs, well, they didn't have a great opponent either.
- 2:58Speaker 1: They played the Washington national and lost two of three
- 3:01Speaker 1: in the opening series. So here we go in the
- 3:04Speaker 1: NL Central also want to mention with the Nationals, Joey
- 3:07Speaker 1: Weimer Waiver claim reaches in each of his first eight
- 3:12Speaker 1: played appearances for Washington. Good for him. Great weekend for
- 3:16Speaker 1: Joey Weimer. Now, the thing that struck me most about
- 3:19Speaker 1: this weekend perhaps would be the performances of some of
- 3:23Speaker 1: the ballyhooed rookies we had all across the league. And
- 3:27Speaker 1: I can go right down the line. Let's start with
- 3:29Speaker 1: Murakami coming from Japan, three home runs in three games,
- 3:33Speaker 1: and then go to some of the other players we're
- 3:35Speaker 1: talking about. Chase the Laughter from the Cleveland Guardians. My goodness,
- 3:39Speaker 1: four home runs first three games, first player since Trevor
- 3:44Speaker 1: Story and the only other player since Trevor's Story to
- 3:47Speaker 1: do that, and three of the guys he took deeper
- 3:49Speaker 1: among the better pitchers in the game off that Seattle staff,
- 3:53Speaker 1: Andre Munos Andres Munos, George Kirby, and Logan Gilbert. Pretty
- 3:58Speaker 1: good group there. He also broke up a no hitter
- 4:00Speaker 1: on Sunday. Pretty good weekend for Chase the latter Now
- 4:03Speaker 1: Kevin McGonagall. He had a fantastic debut four for five
- 4:08Speaker 1: in that game. He's five for twelve overall. He was
- 4:11Speaker 1: robbed of a home run by Jackson Merrill on Saturday
- 4:14Speaker 1: and then came back with a ten pitch at bat
- 4:17Speaker 1: against Wandy Peralta, in which he laced the go ahead single.
- 4:21Speaker 1: This guy looks like he's going to be a stud
- 4:23Speaker 1: in the game for a long time. The same might
- 4:25Speaker 1: be true of the Marlins. Owen Casey, what did he
- 4:28Speaker 1: do this weekend? He was pretty good too, to run
- 4:31Speaker 1: walk off home run yesterday. That would be Sunday five
- 4:35Speaker 1: for ten overall with three extra base hits. He of
- 4:37Speaker 1: course was the big prize for the Marlins in that
- 4:40Speaker 1: Edward Cabrera trade, and then the Cardinals Jj weatherhold home
- 4:45Speaker 1: run and his debut for his first major league hit,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and then a walk off two run single on Saturday.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So some really spectacular performances by rookies, and yes, I
- 4:55Speaker 1: probably of leaving off one or two, but those were
- 4:57Speaker 1: the ones that stood out perhaps most of me. They
- 5:01Speaker 1: were really good, these guys, and they're going to be
- 5:02Speaker 1: really good. They're going to be fun to watch. At
- 5:05Speaker 1: some point, we'll get Connor Griffin up here as well,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and we'll see other rookies impressed in the same way
- 5:12Speaker 1: that these guys have done. The Rookie of the Year
- 5:14Speaker 1: races in both leagues could be rather good. Now, on
- 5:18Speaker 1: a lighter note, perhaps some closer entrances that we saw
- 5:23Speaker 1: this weekend that were, I don't know, pretty cool. Mason
- 5:26Speaker 1: Miller of the Padres coming out to the group. Well,
- 5:31Speaker 1: it's the ah, I'm screwing up this all right. I'm
- 5:34Speaker 1: not gonna say this song because I'm not sure what
- 5:36Speaker 1: it is, but Mason Miller has a new great entrance song.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You see it right there. Obviously, the light's going back
- 5:42Speaker 1: and forth, and it's really cool. It's a heavy metal song.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Korn's Blind, I believe, is what it is. So yes,
- 5:49Speaker 1: Korn's Blind, all right, Sorry for the brand cramp there.
- 5:53Speaker 1: The other one, well, Edwin Diaz. We've seen his act before.
- 5:57Speaker 1: We've seen what he does coming into Narco with the Mets,
- 6:01Speaker 1: and of course he did it with the Dodgers as well.
- 6:03Speaker 1: You remember timmy trumpet would play live once in a
- 6:07Speaker 1: while with the Mets when Edwin Diaz was there, he
- 6:09Speaker 1: would be the guy playing the trumpet part from Narco.
- 6:12Speaker 1: The Dodgers brought in someone with the same initials, Tatiyana Tate.
- 6:17Speaker 1: She did the same thing and the Dodgers had kind
- 6:20Speaker 1: of a raucous time with Edwin Diaz doing the Narco entrance.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So some cool entrances by closers and a lot of
- 6:27Speaker 1: good things happening. Now, one thing that was a little
- 6:30Speaker 1: more troubling, at least in the opening game that the
- 6:33Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Pirates played O'Neil Cruz in centerfield. Now, you saw
- 6:38Speaker 1: some discourse after opening day about Paul Skenes and Matthew
- 6:42Speaker 1: Boyd and Logan Webb all having rough starts. Well, yes,
- 6:46Speaker 1: by the pitching lines they did. Problem was Paul Skeins
- 6:49Speaker 1: would not have had a rough start if not for
- 6:52Speaker 1: two misplays in centerfield by O'Neil Cruz. The sun obviously
- 6:56Speaker 1: was a factor here, it was an issue for him.
- 6:58Speaker 1: You see the tweet there from Noah Hale's of our
- 7:01Speaker 1: own network, the Foul Territory Network, about this about how
- 7:05Speaker 1: O'Neal Cruz in centerfield could be an issue. Now, yesterday
- 7:09Speaker 1: the play that's cut down Lindor at the plate in
- 7:12Speaker 1: the Pirates extra ending victory over the Mets. O'Neil Cruz
- 7:15Speaker 1: started that relay with a good throw from centerfield. So
- 7:18Speaker 1: he's a work in progress. It remains to be seen
- 7:22Speaker 1: just how good he's going to be or not good
- 7:24Speaker 1: out there. But O'Neil Cruz with Pittsburgh trying to take
- 7:29Speaker 1: a step forward here. That's a bit of an issue
- 7:32Speaker 1: right now. So with that we close out my initial
- 7:36Speaker 1: impressions of Opening Weekend. We're going to get to ABS
- 7:39Speaker 1: and the Inside Dish. Trust me on that, and trust
- 7:42Speaker 1: me as well, I will never forget Korn's blind again.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Just a brain cram, Folks, Calm down, relax, We're having fun.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It's Opening Weekend. We'll be back with the Inside Dish
- 7:52Speaker 1: after this.

- 8:06Speaker 3: Oh definitely, I can't wait. I actually want to try
- 8:08Speaker 3: and get to a game. But well, and there, I'll
- 8:10Speaker 3: still have my Fox one app. I'll have MLB, the shows,

- 8:39Speaker 2: to Fox one for complete terms and conditions. Fox one streaming.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Now well well, well, well, all.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Right, time now for the inside dish to part of
- 8:52Speaker 1: the show where I talk about maybe a story I've written,
- 8:54Speaker 1: a trend in the game, something else entirely, And today
- 8:57Speaker 1: it will be a combination of both a COMMI I
- 9:00Speaker 1: wrote for Today's Athletic and a trend in the game,
- 9:04Speaker 1: actually an innovation in the game, the one we know
- 9:07Speaker 1: as the Automated ball Strike System ABS. And I want
- 9:11Speaker 1: to show you a post on x to start with
- 9:14Speaker 1: from the Democratic Senator from Connecticut, Chris Murphy. Now we're
- 9:17Speaker 1: not getting political here, but I just want to show
- 9:20Speaker 1: you this, he tweets last night. ABS is not making
- 9:23Speaker 1: the game better. He was ratioed like you wouldn't believe.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Fans love ABS. And that's what I want to talk
- 9:30Speaker 1: about here. The one unexpected thing from ABS, at least
- 9:33Speaker 1: for me so far, was and has been the entertainment value.
- 9:38Speaker 1: And it was perhaps most exemplified by what happened in
- 9:42Speaker 1: Cincinnati on Saturday, when two straight strike three calls against
- 9:47Speaker 1: Ajohanni Osuarez by C. B. Buckner were overturned. By the system,
- 9:52Speaker 1: and the crowd, with the bases loaded and the Reds
- 9:54Speaker 1: leading but looking to add to their lead, went nuts
- 9:58Speaker 1: on each of the overturn calls. The play by play
- 10:01Speaker 1: announcer for the Reds kind of got into it too,
- 10:03Speaker 1: so it's allowed, as the crowd has been all day
- 10:05Speaker 1: and the Reds have hit two home runs, and it
- 10:08Speaker 1: was just really an example of how abs can be
- 10:12Speaker 1: part of the crowd experience. Now we all knew obviously
- 10:14Speaker 1: it would be on the scoreboard and it would go
- 10:17Speaker 1: about it that way, but to see it in action
- 10:20Speaker 1: and to see it in ballparks all across America. I
- 10:23Speaker 1: had a game Saturday, the Fox Game in San Francisco,
- 10:26Speaker 1: in which there were seven challenges and all seven were overturned.
- 10:30Speaker 1: That's how good the teams were that day in making
- 10:33Speaker 1: their educated guesses, so to speak. So this was something
- 10:37Speaker 1: I didn't expect. And there was also a sequence Sunday
- 10:41Speaker 1: where you saw Minnesota Twins manager Derek Shelton ejected for
- 10:45Speaker 1: arguing not the call by the robot, but whether it
- 10:49Speaker 1: took Baltimore Orioles closer Ryan Helsley too long to challenge. Now,
- 10:54Speaker 1: Hellsley did tap his cap quickly. It wasn't clear whether
- 10:58Speaker 1: the umpire saw it, so he did it again, and
- 11:00Speaker 1: that's where Shelton probably saw, Hey, WHOA, what's going on here?
- 11:04Speaker 1: But it seemed to me that it did happen quickly enough.
- 11:07Speaker 1: And that said overall, when you watch ABS unfold in
- 11:11Speaker 1: a park or on your television screen, it does move quickly.
- 11:15Speaker 1: In fact, I remember, or I've seen in tennis when
- 11:20Speaker 1: the Hawkeye automation comes into play and they're showing it
- 11:23Speaker 1: on the score, where the crowd will clap rhythmically as
- 11:27Speaker 1: if like, wow, this is something cool that's coming. In baseball.
- 11:31Speaker 1: So far, it seems to me it's happened so quick
- 11:33Speaker 1: that there's not even time for the crowd to get
- 11:35Speaker 1: into it in that fashion. So ABS, so far, and
- 11:39Speaker 1: I emphasize the words, so far is a hit. Now.
- 11:44Speaker 1: What's interesting is that we're in the shiny new toy
- 11:47Speaker 1: phase of this. Right. We have seen nothing too egregious
- 11:51Speaker 1: as far as overturned calls. We've seen good things happen,
- 11:55Speaker 1: but we've also seen the possibility of not bad things
- 12:00Speaker 1: is happening, but outcomes that might not be all that desirable.
- 12:04Speaker 1: We've seen some calls decided by a tenth of an inch,
- 12:08Speaker 1: and as Jason Stark informed us in his article on
- 12:11Speaker 1: March twenty fourth in The Athletic. And actually we've written
- 12:14Speaker 1: about this before, Jason and I ourselves, there is margin
- 12:18Speaker 1: fer error here, and I want to show you what
- 12:20Speaker 1: Jason wrote. League officials told The Athletic that MLB is
- 12:24Speaker 1: ninety five percent confident that a pitch would be within
- 12:27Speaker 1: zero point thirty nine inches of the location where the
- 12:30Speaker 1: ABS system pinpoints it. The league also is confident, it
- 12:35Speaker 1: is ninety I'm sorry, ninety nine percent confident that the
- 12:38Speaker 1: location would be within zero point four to eight inches.
- 12:40Speaker 1: That's about a half inch of where ABS said it landed.
- 12:44Speaker 1: That's not one hundred percent, it's ninety nine percent, or
- 12:47Speaker 1: it's ninety five percent. And the problem with that is,
- 12:51Speaker 1: as Jason has written, let's say a World Series game
- 12:55Speaker 1: comes down to a tie score in the ninth inning
- 12:59Speaker 1: with the basis loaded and a three to two count,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and a call gets overturned by a tenth of an inch.
- 13:05Speaker 1: You're within the margin for error. And that's a problem.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And we're going to see games decided that way. Maybe
- 13:11Speaker 1: not Games seven of the World Series, but it could happen.
- 13:14Speaker 1: We had Games seven of the World Series get down
- 13:16Speaker 1: to a pretty nitty gritty last year in the ninth inning,
- 13:19Speaker 1: so we will see how this all plays out. And
- 13:22Speaker 1: in his article, Jason wrote how some players were in
- 13:25Speaker 1: favor of a buffer zone in which umpires would be
- 13:29Speaker 1: permitted some grace where if a pitch is within a
- 13:33Speaker 1: certain margin for error, say a half inch as an example,
- 13:37Speaker 1: then it could be a call stands situation, much as
- 13:40Speaker 1: we see with instant replay right when the call is
- 13:43Speaker 1: not overturned. There are problems with that. It creates confusion,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and ultimately the league decided it didn't want to go there.
- 13:50Speaker 1: So we're going to see a lot of interesting things happen.
- 13:54Speaker 1: And as I wrote in my story my column today,
- 13:57Speaker 1: we've already seen star players regretting not doing certain things
- 14:01Speaker 1: with abs, either not challenging or challenging too early and
- 14:05Speaker 1: burning a challenge. We saw that with Roman Anthony and
- 14:08Speaker 1: Kyle Schwarber. They expressed remorse about not a I'm sorry
- 14:13Speaker 1: challenging when they shouldn't have perhaps, and we saw Spencer
- 14:16Speaker 1: Torkolsen express regret about, hey, I should have challenged earlier
- 14:22Speaker 1: in the game when I had a real shot there
- 14:23Speaker 1: and I didn't and it cost us. You're going to
- 14:26Speaker 1: see that there are new forms of strategy here, new
- 14:29Speaker 1: forms of scrutiny, and new things for us to debate.
- 14:33Speaker 1: And in my view, with baseball, it is the best
- 14:37Speaker 1: talking sport. It always has been. It's a sport where
- 14:40Speaker 1: the action is not so fast, where you can't talk
- 14:43Speaker 1: about things between pitches, between innings, even though it's faster
- 14:46Speaker 1: with the pitch clock, And it's a sport which, because
- 14:49Speaker 1: it plays out over six months and one hundred and
- 14:51Speaker 1: sixty two games, gives us endless opportunities to talk about
- 14:56Speaker 1: things and debate things and all of that, and that's
- 14:58Speaker 1: where the strategy element here comes into play. It's really
- 15:02Speaker 1: interesting to see how players are handling it, and it
- 15:04Speaker 1: will be really interesting to see how players and teams
- 15:08Speaker 1: evolve in their thinking with how aggressively to use their challenges. Remembered,
- 15:13Speaker 1: you're permitted to per game. If you are correct, you
- 15:16Speaker 1: can keep going. You retain your challenge. If you're incorrect
- 15:19Speaker 1: and you lose your two by the ninth inning, well
- 15:21Speaker 1: you're out of luck. And Jason has pointed out too
- 15:25Speaker 1: that what happens if a team loses its challenges, and
- 15:28Speaker 1: then we see an agreeious call occur in the ninth inning. Well,
- 15:31Speaker 1: that's too bad. That's part of the system. So I
- 15:34Speaker 1: am all in favor of anything in baseball that encourages
- 15:38Speaker 1: more discussion, more debate, more decision making. And I've actually
- 15:44Speaker 1: in the story in the column mentioned that I would
- 15:47Speaker 1: like to see draft picks traded. I would like to
- 15:50Speaker 1: see a second trade deadline at the winter meetings. Again,
- 15:53Speaker 1: more decision making, more things to discuss, more things to
- 15:56Speaker 1: debate and have fun with. That is what ABA is
- 16:00Speaker 1: proving to be so far. You might have seen the
- 16:03Speaker 1: hilarious Randy A Rose Arena helmet tap after he was
- 16:08Speaker 1: three steps up the line so convinced of his correctness
- 16:13Speaker 1: with a challenge the other night in Seattle, and it
- 16:15Speaker 1: proved to be correct in his case, not by a lot,
- 16:18Speaker 1: but he was right. So we're gonna see an entertainment
- 16:21Speaker 1: aspect here that perhaps some people didn't anticipate. I sure didn't.
- 16:26Speaker 1: And the game is supposed to be fun. ABS is
- 16:29Speaker 1: making it fun. We're gonna see some unintended consequences. We're
- 16:33Speaker 1: gonna see some unfortunate things happen at the same time.
- 16:38Speaker 1: On balance, I'm down with this. I'm good with this. ABS,
- 16:42Speaker 1: in my view, is a success. All right, with that,
- 16:46Speaker 1: we will take a break. Grilling Can is coming up
- 16:49Speaker 1: right after this. All right, time now for Grilling Can
- 16:58Speaker 1: the part of the program where you guys get to
- 17:00Speaker 1: ask me questions. Let's get going. First question comes from
- 17:06Speaker 1: videos two seven. Is Murakami better than we thought he was?
- 17:10Speaker 1: Fair question? And actually at the start of the off
- 17:13Speaker 1: season the predictions for Murakami in free agency turned out
- 17:17Speaker 1: to be much higher than what he actually got from
- 17:20Speaker 1: the White Sox, and there were some questions about swing
- 17:23Speaker 1: and miss, questions about defense, questions as they always are
- 17:27Speaker 1: about Japanese players adapting to major league pitching. Well, so far,
- 17:32Speaker 1: so good. He had the three homers in three games
- 17:34Speaker 1: against the Brewers. Obviously you want to see a play out.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Obviously we are in the small sample overreaction phase of
- 17:41Speaker 1: the season the opening week. But again it's very encouraging
- 17:46Speaker 1: and there's no question he has power. That was not
- 17:49Speaker 1: a question coming over from Japan. So the question will
- 17:53Speaker 1: be as major league pitchers adjust to him, how will
- 17:56Speaker 1: he adjust in kind, and whether he will be able
- 17:59Speaker 1: to saying not a one hundred and sixty two homer
- 18:02Speaker 1: in one hundred and sixty two game performance, but a
- 18:05Speaker 1: level that is comparable to what he was able to
- 18:08Speaker 1: do in Japan. All right, next question, This one comes
- 18:12Speaker 1: from Texas or a fan Rangers fan. Is McCutcheon making
- 18:15Speaker 1: enough of an impression on the Rangers that they'd be
- 18:17Speaker 1: willing to buy out Jack Peterson should his struggles continue? Okay,
- 18:22Speaker 1: slow down, we're talking again about the opening weekend, And yes,
- 18:26Speaker 1: Andrew McCutcheon had a great opening weekend. I could have
- 18:29Speaker 1: mentioned him in the open to the show when I
- 18:32Speaker 1: was running through the things that made the strongest impression
- 18:35Speaker 1: because that exchange that he had with the Phillies fan
- 18:38Speaker 1: after his home run yesterday in which the Phillies fans saying,
- 18:40Speaker 1: come on, Cutch, give us a break, and he was like,
- 18:43Speaker 1: hey man, I'm sorry. That was great. That was hilarious.
- 18:46Speaker 1: So obviously, over time, if McCutchen has that big an impact, yes,
- 18:53Speaker 1: they could be looking at a different perspective on Jock Peterson,
- 18:56Speaker 1: but they go to they are going to need Jack
- 18:58Speaker 1: Peterson to be really good too, and offense has been
- 19:02Speaker 1: an issue for the Rangers. We need to see more
- 19:05Speaker 1: from Cutch. We need to see more from Jock. Again,
- 19:08Speaker 1: It's the opening weekend, not time to overreact. All right,
- 19:11Speaker 1: Let's get to the next question. This one comes from
- 19:15Speaker 1: John C. Ninety who says, if a team like the
- 19:17Speaker 1: Pirates suddenly had as much money as the Dodgers, where
- 19:20Speaker 1: they develop the same level success of success or is
- 19:23Speaker 1: it more than money? Great question, and I would say
- 19:26Speaker 1: to you, it is more than money, And yes, the
- 19:29Speaker 1: Dodgers spend more than other teams. But I will point
- 19:32Speaker 1: you to a story by the athletics Fabian our Diet
- 19:36Speaker 1: last week about the Dodgers' culture and about the way
- 19:40Speaker 1: players hold each other accountable and how the emphasis there
- 19:43Speaker 1: is on winning and winning only that's part of it.
- 19:46Speaker 1: With the Dodgers. They are also excellent at developing players
- 19:50Speaker 1: in the minor leagues, identifying which players to draft, identifying
- 19:54Speaker 1: players to or who might be undervalued by other teams
- 20:00Speaker 1: but could play valuable roles for them. There have been
- 20:02Speaker 1: countless examples of that. So the Dodgers, at every level
- 20:07Speaker 1: of evaluation are operating on a higher level than every
- 20:11Speaker 1: other team. So the Pirates would not be the Dodgers
- 20:15Speaker 1: if they were simply spending the same amount of money
- 20:18Speaker 1: and you see this in other leagues as well, salary
- 20:20Speaker 1: cap pleagues. Certain teams are run better than others, and
- 20:24Speaker 1: that is how they are enabled to be so successful
- 20:28Speaker 1: over extended periods of time. All right, next question from
- 20:34Speaker 1: Foul Territory Show. Are you worried about Bobashett? I will
- 20:38Speaker 1: point you to a column by Joel Sherman of the
- 20:40Speaker 1: New York Post, my friend and someone I admire greatly,
- 20:43Speaker 1: who writes about Bobashet on Monday today and basically says,
- 20:47Speaker 1: don't worry about Bobashet. If you're the Mets, You've got
- 20:50Speaker 1: other issues. Maybe Bobashet's defense a little bit Polanco's defense
- 20:54Speaker 1: at first, Maybe Sean man I is lack of velocity.
- 20:57Speaker 1: There are other issues that are surfacing with the Mets.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Bobashet being able to hit is not going to be
- 21:04Speaker 1: one of them. Bobashett is going to hit. They have
- 21:07Speaker 1: every reason to believe that. It was interesting to hear
- 21:10Speaker 1: his own view of his opening start with the Nets.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Basically said he was surprised it took the fans as
- 21:17Speaker 1: long to boo him as it did. So Bobashett clearly
- 21:20Speaker 1: knows what is ahead of him. Clearly knows what he
- 21:23Speaker 1: has to do for the Mets and him hitting, I
- 21:26Speaker 1: do not expect to be a problem. All right, let's
- 21:29Speaker 1: get to another question here. We're ripping through him. This morning.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Video Game Nation twenty six asked, do you think teams
- 21:36Speaker 1: at some point in the future will need three ABS
- 21:39Speaker 1: challenges instead of only two? There is a reason it's
- 21:43Speaker 1: only two, and that's because Baseball wants to keep the
- 21:46Speaker 1: game moving and they want teams to approach this not
- 21:50Speaker 1: as oh, we can challenge at any time, but to
- 21:53Speaker 1: use those challenges selectively and only in certain situations where
- 21:57Speaker 1: they believe it's the most leverage. Okay, so I am
- 22:03Speaker 1: quite certain the system at some point will require tweaks.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I don't know that baseball is ever going to want
- 22:09Speaker 1: to get to three, four or five challenges. Now, the
- 22:12Speaker 1: next question to come out of that would be why
- 22:15Speaker 1: not full ABS? And I address this in my column.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I don't want full ABS. I don't know that anyone
- 22:21Speaker 1: should want full ABS. You're taking the human element out
- 22:25Speaker 1: of it entirely. At that point. You're taking framing out
- 22:28Speaker 1: of it from a player's perspective, and there's still great
- 22:30Speaker 1: value in framing. And you're also removing the homeplate umpire.
- 22:35Speaker 1: And let's face it, these guys do a great job
- 22:38Speaker 1: on balance, and you see that by the percentage of
- 22:41Speaker 1: pitches challenged, it's not a great percentage. The umpires, if anything,
- 22:46Speaker 1: with ABS are only going to be helped because yes,
- 22:50Speaker 1: on occasion, when they miss a call, it does happen.
- 22:53Speaker 1: We're all human. This will be able to help them
- 22:55Speaker 1: this system. So I don't see an increasing challenges being
- 23:01Speaker 1: something that Baseball looks at in the future, and I
- 23:04Speaker 1: don't see full ABS being the answer. This system is
- 23:08Speaker 1: pretty good right now the way it is, at least
- 23:10Speaker 1: based on the opening weekend, and again small sample, we
- 23:14Speaker 1: haven't seen some of these unintended consequences that I have
- 23:18Speaker 1: feared come to pass yet in a big way. I'm
- 23:21Speaker 1: sure we will in time. And then in time also
- 23:25Speaker 1: MLBU can look at the system and decide whether tweaks
- 23:28Speaker 1: are necessary. All right, let's get to another question here.
- 23:31Speaker 1: This one comes from Slice Life, who asks, with the
- 23:34Speaker 1: struggle of the top of the star lineup of the Phillies,
- 23:37Speaker 1: would you make a lineup change to switch things up?
- 23:39Speaker 1: What would your approach to this be. You're talking there
- 23:43Speaker 1: about Bryce Harper, and I understand it. But at the
- 23:46Speaker 1: same time, my goodness, this is the smallest of samples,
- 23:49Speaker 1: and I am referring all morning to Opening week overreaction.
- 23:54Speaker 1: This is a case where if the Phillies made a
- 23:56Speaker 1: change now, it would be Opening week overreaction. Are going
- 24:00Speaker 1: to settle down. If in two months we have the
- 24:03Speaker 1: same kind of problem, even two weeks, then maybe maybe
- 24:06Speaker 1: you look at it a little bit differently. But right
- 24:08Speaker 1: now it's not time to start changing lineups or anything
- 24:11Speaker 1: like that. And I'll refer also to another team in
- 24:15Speaker 1: this kind of category. San Francisco Giants just saw them
- 24:18Speaker 1: all weekend again. One run in three games not ideal,
- 24:23Speaker 1: and that offense might not be as good as the
- 24:25Speaker 1: names on paper would suggest. But Tony v. Teller the
- 24:29Speaker 1: managers basically said, this is who we're sticking with. We'll
- 24:31Speaker 1: tweak at times. They tweak their lineup Saturday, but overall
- 24:36Speaker 1: they're gonna stick with the guys who at least have
- 24:39Speaker 1: gotten them to this point, or at least the guys
- 24:41Speaker 1: that they've envisioned getting them to where they need to be.
- 24:45Speaker 1: It's not time yet to change anything dramatically, all right.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I want to thank everyone for watching and for listening.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Foul Territory coming up at one pm Easton. That's Todd,
- 24:55Speaker 1: Eric Kratz and Scott Broun, Mason Miller discussing coins, blind
- 25:00Speaker 1: and brewer territories. Kurt Ho will be joining as well
- 25:03Speaker 1: as Katie Wu. We're back Thursday with Ilana. We'll talk
- 25:06Speaker 1: to you then, Thanks for watching, Thanks for listening again.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Have a great week everyone.
