- 0:16Speaker 2: Traders are being worn to look after their bodies by
- 0:18Speaker 2: warming up before work. According to a Wellington physio, a
- 0:21Speaker 2: forty hour construction job does the same damage to your
- 0:24Speaker 2: body as you would get if you were an elite athlete,
- 0:27Speaker 2: and a simple morning stretch will just add years to
- 0:29Speaker 2: your career. Chris Paalachuk is the Egonomics Program Director Manager
- 0:33Speaker 2: RATHER at Construction Health and Safety, New Zealand. Hi, Chris, Cyoda,
- 0:37Speaker 2: how many people out there? How many traders out there
- 0:39Speaker 2: are doing the stretches? Do you reckon?
- 0:42Speaker 3: Well? Not enough really hither I have to say a
- 0:46Speaker 3: bit slow on the uptake. We still have a little
- 0:48Speaker 3: bit of a marcho culture to deal with in construction,
- 0:52Speaker 3: and I think people just feel that pains a little
- 0:56Speaker 3: bit of a badge of honor.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Oh do you reckon? Okay? Because I would have put
- 1:01Speaker 2: it down to just being a bit lazy. I mean
- 1:03Speaker 2: that's me. I'd just trott of for a run. I
- 1:05Speaker 2: don't do a stretch. I just can't be bothered with
- 1:07Speaker 2: the time. Isn't that what that?
- 1:09Speaker 3: Oh? They're definitely not lazy. They're up at first thing
- 1:12Speaker 3: in the morning, they're working late. Lazy wouldn't be something
- 1:16Speaker 3: I would call them. Definitely not.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Actually I've made a mess of steak. They haven't.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I Perhaps, yeah, perhaps unmotivated, Perhaps just don't really realize
- 1:26Speaker 3: the true benefits that a warm up could bring.
- 1:29Speaker 2: What do you reckon they need to do, Chris, just
- 1:30Speaker 2: a gentle yoga, just as a little downward dog upward
- 1:33Speaker 2: dog maneuver.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Well, there's no real research to support anything in the
- 1:38Speaker 3: workplace at the moment, but we do know through like soccer,
- 1:42Speaker 3: smart acc programs and netball that a customized program which
- 1:46Speaker 3: has developed based on the tasks that you're going to perform,
- 1:50Speaker 3: prevents injury. And so it's kind of a no brainer
- 1:53Speaker 3: that this will work in the workplace. A little bit
- 1:56Speaker 3: slow on the uptake.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Have you heard, Chriss of any bosses telling their workers right,
- 2:01Speaker 2: we're getting into this with a good morning stretch. Any
- 2:03Speaker 2: other team leaders go in.
- 2:05Speaker 3: For it has to be led by team leaders. We've
- 2:08Speaker 3: got a really good example in Jeep Scaffolding, who their
- 2:13Speaker 3: team leaders make sure that it's done every day, every morning,
- 2:17Speaker 3: and they use it as the chance to catch up
- 2:20Speaker 3: with each other, debrief talk about the day, the hazards
- 2:23Speaker 3: they're going to face, and they just integrated into their
- 2:26Speaker 3: day to day work. So there's some good examples out there.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Thank you, mate, appreciate it. Chris Palachok, Construction Health and
- 2:32Speaker 2: Safety n Z Ergonomics program Director, that's a hard no
- 2:36Speaker 2: from me. Imagine if you turned up for work and
- 2:37Speaker 2: they were like, right, grab a coffee and we're doing
- 2:40Speaker 2: downward Dogs together.
