- 1:15with the modest Touch Matter Parts three and four from Hollywood, It's time now
- 1:21for Johnny Dollar. Jake Kessler returning your call. Johnny, I just got
- 1:27back here to my office. You've been at the hospital, yes, and
- 1:30it looks like hard luck Dennis may pull through. Has he been able to
- 1:34talk? He may never be able to. That bullet went right through his
- 1:37neck. Anyhow, He's still unconscious. He's the key to the whole case,
- 1:40Jake, So follow me here as soon as he canna be talked to
- 1:42him. Meantime. Meantime, I'm gonna try to snag me some of these
- 1:45Lake Mohave Bess, Lucky Dog Tonight and every Weekday Night Bob Bailey and the
- 1:57transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Pactics Benskout, America's Fabulous freelance insurance
- 2:01Investigator, Yours Trully Johnny Dollar from Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location Catherine Wash
- 2:19on the Colorado River, to the Greater Southwest Insurance and Liability Company Kingman,
- 2:23Arizona office, following as a report of expenses incurred during my investigation of the
- 2:28Midas Touch matter idam eight six dollars twenty cents gas for the rental car that
- 2:35I drove down here to the Lake Mohave Resort in the Colorado River just above
- 2:38Davis Dam. And what a place, modern, comfortable cabin within spitting distance
- 2:43of the lake itself, good restaurant, tackle shop, doc in fact,
- 2:47everything to make a fisherman happy to help him fight it out with a luncker
- 2:51bass that inhabit the sixty mile long lake. But much as I wanted to
- 2:54fish, I had other things to do. First. I wanted a good
- 2:57look at the Minas Touch mine. On the advice of the manager hand Pratt,
- 3:00I took along Buster favor general fact told him of the resort. I
- 3:05like Buster immediately, short, stocky, cheerful, and with keen eyes that
- 3:08took in everything that went on about him. Little side road to the left,
- 3:14Johnny. Okay, so old hard Luck Dennis got shot up. Yeah,
- 3:19apparently because he knew too much. You see when that caven occurred at
- 3:23the Minas touched and killed the Haskell brothers. Are you you better go into
- 3:25second year on this road? Okay, you're right? Why hide Luck was
- 3:30the only person known to have been there with him. Couple that with the
- 3:34fact he just got sixty thousand bucks from them to reopen the mine. But
- 3:38mine's worthless, Johnny, So I understand Anyhow, Naturally enough, everybody decide
- 3:44that hard Luck had done it in all before the brothers could get wires to
- 3:46him. It's a funny old cad pretty nervous when I saw him. He
- 3:51almost took a shot at me a couple of times when he didn't like something
- 3:53I said. Instead he got it. Yeah, Well, he was just
- 3:59prospect, and he was all right, man, he's getting up out of
- 4:01the ground here and there to live on some left over for a Saturday night
- 4:05being down in Hey, you see the workings up ahead, right, But
- 4:11when he couldn't seem to make a big strike, like every prospect to try
- 4:14as far, that's funny, tried finding suckers for some of his fancy promotions.
- 4:18Huh Yeah, but he really wasn't very good at it. He threw
- 4:23him out of the Texas oil country, you know. Yeah, so I
- 4:25heard. Wow, So that's the minus touch. Not too many of this
- 4:31kind of mine anymore, with the entrance going into the hillside this way,
- 4:35and I better use this flashlame, Okay, Hey, tell me something,
- 4:42fuster. If this mine is worthless, how could hard luck get the Haskell
- 4:46brothers to chip off chunks of ore that has sayed over one thousand dollars a
- 4:49ton? Well, I got kind of a theory about that. Let's see,
- 4:54if I'm right, everything is so covered up with dust down here,
- 4:59not having been work for years, ought, it'll be easy to see where
- 5:01they knocked off chips for sample to take it back. Well, well,
- 5:06well, what are you doing down here? Holy smoke, that's a rattler.
- 5:11Yeah, I guess he decided to get in out of the hot sun
- 5:14out there. Here. I'll find a big rock or something. No,
- 5:16you just wait, handle it. This old pick here. I can get
- 5:20them to strake at it. Maybe I can grab them by the tail and
- 5:25watch it and crack him like a whipper. So help me by. Sometimes
- 5:31you do it right, You can snap their heads right off. Got to
- 5:35be careful, oh, not to snap that head against your own self.
- 5:40Brother, Yeah, you can see what you mean. No chance of somebody
- 5:45having planted that snake down here, is there? I mean like scarp in
- 5:47in the monument. Huh. You know those little neat piles of rock you
- 5:51see here there in the desert, two three feet high. I thought those
- 5:56were where some prospector had stake to clean markers. Yeah, there are monuments,
- 6:00they call them. In the old days, they always did the same
- 6:03way. How is that? Well, pull a couple of stones away,
- 6:06you'd find the old Prince Albert Tobacco. Ten he opened the tin, you'd
- 6:12find two things in it. Piece of paper describing and marking off the claim,
- 6:16and a scorpion alive as long as he stayed alive. That meant stay
- 6:21away, no trespassing. This is mine. I'll be dying. And look
- 6:27here here, Johnny, on this pillar. That was the pillar that was
- 6:31left by digging around it to hold up the ceiling. Oh you see where
- 6:35someone was knocked off with a pig. Yeah, hey, Buster, that
- 6:40looks like yelk, it looks like gold. That's what it is. Then
- 6:44this mine is rich? Nah, Johnny, you mean the only gold or
- 6:48left down here is in these pillars, that's right, and without on the
- 6:53roof of cavian. Couldn't it? Couldn't it be short up with wood?
- 6:56Why only two, three, four of these left down there? Probably not
- 7:00moreing a ton at all? Not worth it, Oh yeah, I see,
- 7:03but worth using it to bring in the suckers. Yeah. Well,
- 7:08now you want to see how the cave in on the hass wasn't it?
- 7:13Sam? Hell is just doing down here this winch in length of wire rope.
- 7:16Isn't that the answer to the cave in? Ted Harding over at headquarters,
- 7:19and Kingman seemed to think so. Yeah. Sure. Somebody used to
- 7:24pull down one of the pillars for Johnny. A winch of this type hadn't
- 7:28got any place in the mind. Where would a rig like this be used?
- 7:30Well, every ranch in this whole area probably has a couple cattle wrench.
- 7:35Yeah, that's right. Hmmm. That gives me an idea about who
- 7:40did it. At least it gives me a lead to an idea, or
- 7:44at least the kind of questions to ask. Hard luck, Dennis, I
- 7:46thought you said he was still unconscious. Yeah, yeah, so I'll have
- 7:50to wait. Well, let's get out of here. What he plan to
- 7:55do? Now? Oh? Just wait, I guess and do some fishing
- 7:58while I white. Oh now that's right down my alley. Only first time
- 8:01I'm going to knock off a bit of this oar for a suoner. Yeah,
- 8:05this old picked on the well, I take it easy, I shauld
- 8:07take it easy now, Johnny, you should know them better than that.
- 8:22Let me help you out of that powder rubble. My face was pretty red
- 8:30as we drove back to Lake Muhammi. Only once did Buster mention the full
- 8:33thing I've done. Yes, sir, If you'd blinded away at one of
- 8:37the pillars further in the shaft, we would have been in real trouble.
- 8:39Probably ended up like the Haskell brothers, and I suppose instead of planning on
- 8:43going fishing, I should have been cooking up some new angle of attack on
- 8:46this case. But after all I had been promised fishing time on this trip,
- 8:50and until hard Luck Dennis could recover enough to talk. I got the
- 8:56boat already and waiting for it, Johnny with a thirty high Johnson outboat on
- 8:58it. Oh boy, I can't wait, and I'll take you the spots.
- 9:01I know where you can pull out the biggest fight in this beast.
- 9:03You ever saw buss the you son of Aghania, attempting me with something I
- 9:07can't resist. Well, even loan you my bottle of fast tray fast,
- 9:11Yeah, your oil, little dab of that on your bat'll guarantee you fish.
- 9:15That's for me. You you sure you wouldn't rather just sit and try
- 9:20to figure out some new lead on this insurance case? You want my answer
- 9:24here? But has luck would happened? Ham Pratt was standing down by the
- 9:35dock waiting for us, with a message for me, Carl Kingman operated number
- 9:39three seven. I made the call, is Jake Kessler, Johnny, how's
- 9:43the fishing? Well? It wasn't for the message from you, I'd be
- 9:46out on Lake Mohave right now. So if that's all you want to know,
- 9:48Monny, Yeah, I put in this call to over two hours ago
- 9:52when hard Luck Dennis first game too. Yes, yes, the doctor is
- 9:56going to be okay. Has he told you anything about who shot him up?
- 9:58No, he won't talk to anybody, but you says you're his only
- 10:01friend. Okay, Jay, I'm on my way and a half hour flat.
- 10:07I was back in Kingman at the Mercy Hospital on the edge of town.
- 10:15Not a hard Luck Johnny, Johnny Dellar, that's right, Glad you
- 10:22came only one to trust, not like people around town. They hate me.
- 10:28Wow. Knew he'd tried to get me. Jenny probably seen me going
- 10:33back to the mine. Knew I'd recognize that winch he left her, the
- 10:39winch that was used to pull down the mine pillar caused the cavan. That's
- 10:41right. A lot of winches like that and the ranchesly Alex, only he
- 10:48used that particular make Royal standard, Alex fool, hard Luck Bundy, Alex
- 10:56Bundy forming at the Haskles, the two Lazy two? Yes, Ali,
- 11:01but why in love Kevin Hasko's wife, Dora? Okay, Okay, will
- 11:11you tell the police to court all this when the time comes. If you
- 11:13say so, ah, he'll live all right. The doctor says, you're
- 11:18gonna be fine. You're gonna be okay. Now, is there anything you
- 11:22want? Anything I can have scent of here to make you more comfortable.
- 11:24No, thanks, Jenny, just come and see me. Sure, thanks,
- 11:33I guess sure, the only real friend I have. Just why he
- 11:37felt that way, I don't know. Perhaps it was because he needed a
- 11:41friend. I decided I'd better let Jake Kesler in on what I'd learned,
- 11:46and incidentally ask him for directions to the two Lazy two. So I drove
- 11:50on over to his little second floor office on eas Bomb Drive. Alex Bundy,
- 11:56Yeah, that's what Hardlock says, and with his testimony back me up.
- 12:00When I find Alex Shoe, well, we'll have a case, a
- 12:03good case, which means, by the way, that your company won't have
- 12:05to pay off an additional million and a half a double. What's the matter.
- 12:13Uh yeah, Jake, I'm going on over and do a bit of
- 12:16fishing and Lake Mohabb mister Favor promises to get me a limit of the finest
- 12:20bash. What is it, Johnny, what do you do with somebody was
- 12:26outside that door listening to us. I'm sure, well, yeah, look
- 12:28there he is going down the street. Recognize him, Jake, Where Johnny?
- 12:33That's too lady, gun around the corner. But if it's who I
- 12:37think it is, yeah, he must have heard all that was said in
- 12:39here. Alex Bendy, what's your guess I've been thinking, Johnny. Yeah,
- 12:43Old hard Luck Dennis been the key to this whole case right from the
- 12:46case. He still is more than ever after what he told me. All
- 12:48right, then excuse me Jake Kessler speaking. Oh hello cheef. Hm,
- 12:58why oh? What's the matter of Chack? What's the matter? You look
- 13:05like you've seen a ghost that was Tad Harding at headquarters the fire escape outside
- 13:11the room at the hospital. H somebody clumb up the fire escape used the
- 13:16bailing hook. Oh yeah, he's dead now, hard Lucky Johnny Dellar good.
- 13:41I was hoping you'd be there at Jake Kessler's office. This iss your
- 13:46favorite lake, my hobby resort, Oh high find out anything? Yeah,
- 13:50hard Luck Dennis are one real key to this three million dollar case has just
- 13:52been murdered. I have an idea. Well, I found something here that
- 13:58might have help oh, tired tracks the old miners shack where hard Luck was
- 14:03shot. More of the same tire tracks here at the resort Flster. I'm
- 14:07on my way. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar location Lake Mohave
- 14:20Resort on the Colorado River in Arizona to the Greater Southwest Insurance and Liability Company.
- 14:24Following is an accounting of expendit yours during my investigation of the Midas touch
- 14:28matter. Adam nine six point thirty is stop at the sign of the Flying
- 14:35Red Horse for gas for my rented car. They get me from King of
- 14:39Arizona to Lake Mohabb Resort. About a mile short of the lake, on
- 14:43the winding road that led in for the main highway, I found Buster waiting
- 14:46in a spot where an old wagon trail cut off to the right. Right
- 14:52over here, John hied Buster see him here? These tire tracks in the
- 14:58sand, Well, oh yeah, sure, you see three of the tires.
- 15:03Look here where the car turned to get around this rock. Yeah yeah.
- 15:07Three of the tires were pretty good, had those big knobby treads.
- 15:11But this one right front's almost worn smooth? Or is it the left rear?
- 15:16Oh, it's right front, Johnny, the car was going north out
- 15:18into the desert. Tell by the little skid on this turn, Flus.
- 15:22Do you read tire tracks like some people can read footprints. It's just practice
- 15:26anyway. These are the same tracks that I found by the old shack where
- 15:31you met hard Luck and he got shot at. And let's get into my
- 15:33car and follow these up. Oh, Johnny, nothing but jeep could get
- 15:35over this trail. Well, why does this trail pick up a highway again?
- 15:39It doesn't winds around for eight or ten miles and ends up in the
- 15:43lake over by the southwest corner of the fence line on the two Lazy two
- 15:46range. And our best bet is to drive over to the two lazy Except
- 15:50for one thing. The jeep we're looking for somewhere up that trail. So
- 15:54we'll go by outboard what this old trail worms round? Or I have always
- 15:58close along the edge Lake Mohave all the way, and the end of it's
- 16:02eight mile to one is only about one mile by water from our dock at
- 16:06the resort m Then we ought to be able to intercept whoever's in that cheap
- 16:08that's right, now, let's go. Lake Mohave was clear and calm and
- 16:18beautiful, perfect for fishing. But we had other things on our minds.
- 16:22As the thirty horse outboard pushed our fourteen foot aluminum boat along at better than
- 16:26twenty five miles an hour, we stayed fairly close to the Arizona side.
- 16:30Look, Johnny, see that streak of dust along the shore. Yeah,
- 16:36somebody's been driving along there all right. Still is won't be able to see
- 16:40who though, until it comes out from behind that ridge of hills over there.
- 16:44Hey, that streak of dust hasn't grown any longer. Looks like he
- 16:47stopped. Good Bee, I'll head his ind towards shore now. I still
- 16:52don't understand why he'd be driving out on a dead end trail alone, unless
- 16:56he wants to dump a body or something in the lake. Now that's something
- 16:59more thought, all right. But if it is a killer you're looking for,
- 17:03you said that trail ends at the corner of it. Hey, wait
- 17:07a minute, Bush, Yeah, if it's who I think it is,
- 17:11he overheard me tell Jake Kessler, I planned to go fishing out here today.
- 17:14So what was that? I won't have giving you trouble? What was
- 17:18what there? Herein? Yeah? I heard it, but it wasn't the
- 17:22motor. That's funny. What's the look we're taking in water? Those holes
- 17:26in the bottom. You take this can and start bailing, right, I
- 17:30would drew a lot of holes. No, wait a minute, look at
- 17:33them close. They're bullet holes. Holy smoke, you're right, Hey,
- 17:36that was a shot came from over on the shore. I saw the puff
- 17:38of smoke over on that patch of sagebrush. Come on, let's get out
- 17:41of here. Let's swarm us around, Buster here, we've been a para
- 17:45city ducks man. You are right. Keep on bailing and keep your head
- 17:48down. Swing us around that little point there and we'll be out of range.
- 17:52Wow, you see that's fret of water beside us. That guy can
- 17:53shoot. You aren't kidding, Paul, kay Buster, you can ease her
- 18:00up now or out of his line. Yeah, well, I guess we've
- 18:04pulled a bonet, Johnny. Why not having somebody posted on that road while
- 18:07we came out here? Uh huh. Now he can climb back and his
- 18:11jeep and yeah, there you see trail of dust again going back to the
- 18:15highway. I see it. We hadn't taken on so much water, we
- 18:18might be able to get back and intercept him on the highway. But it's
- 18:21too late. Now. Well, at least we know what to look for.
- 18:22What the cheap that's made those tracks? Well, isn't it kind of
- 18:26like looking for needle in a haystack out in this country? Wester? I
- 18:30think I know exactly where to look. I believe I must have bailed a
- 18:37good five gallons of water out of that boat by the time we reached the
- 18:38dock. Then Buster insisted on going along as I headed back up the highway
- 18:42toward Kingman. We stopped where the old trail cut in, only long enough
- 18:47to see if the jeep tracks had come back on the highway. They had.
- 18:52Now that we're on the way, Johnny, where are we gone?
- 18:53Any of these ranches out here used Jeepsbuster, most, all the big ones,
- 18:57but including the too lazy two. Yes, right now, Wait a
- 19:02minute, I didn't ask you who you thought was shooting at us out there
- 19:06on the lake. Who you thought overheard you're talking about going fishing. I
- 19:08figured if you wanted to tell me, you would. Oh. The trouble
- 19:11is, I still can't prove anything. All right, let me tell you
- 19:15who can shoot like that and with that kind of a gun. It was
- 19:18a thirty odd six. You could tell by the sound thirty odd six with
- 19:22a long barrow. That could mean it had a scope. Site almost have
- 19:26to for that kind of shooting. Alex Bundy for a minute, too lazy
- 19:30too, that's who hard luck Tennis said, shot at him and it ties
- 19:33up. Johnny does it? You got a few too many under his belt.
- 19:37One night at a dance party in Kingman, he started yapping his head
- 19:41off about how a lot of soft living millionaires from back east could come out
- 19:45here and own the place while he had to do all the work. There
- 19:48wasn't fair. Worm ad turned sometime, even if he had to help it
- 19:52turn, and he'd be the one who count the money. Boyt the time,
- 19:56everybody started talking about him and Dora, Dora, wife of one of
- 20:00the Haskell brothers that was killed on the mine. Oh, Kevin Haskell,
- 20:03go on. Must seems Alex and Durro seen a lot of each other on
- 20:07the sly Everybody kind of stood around waiting to see if Alex was trying to
- 20:11get some control of the rants. That way, that's union pass right ahead
- 20:17over the tops of the road to the left short cut to the two lazy
- 20:19two. That's where you want to go in Yeah, Bust, that's where
- 20:23I want to go. It was only a couple of miles into the ranch's
- 20:30fence line, but I got three miles further to the main house and its
- 20:33cluster of out buildings. Buster sharp Eyes first noticed the jeep park by the
- 20:37side of what looked like a vic tool ship, and I drove slowly past
- 20:41it, slowly enough so that he could study its tires and the tracks on
- 20:45the dusty ground. Uh huh, Well that's the one, all right.
- 20:52Then keep an eye out for Alex and that gun up his and be ready
- 20:56to duck by the main house. Okay, you know, I got a
- 21:02kind of funny feeling now that we're here. We should have brought a posse
- 21:04along. Right, It's too late for that. Now. It is a
- 21:08gun bulging onto your jacket, isn't it. Oh yeah, but I'm wondering
- 21:11what chances a little thirty eight lemon squeeze her hands against the high powered rifle.
- 21:15Oh, come on, keep your eyes peeled, Johnny. I'm beginning
- 21:22to feel like I'm right in the middle of an old time Western movie.
- 21:25Maybe you are a Buster, Maybe you are why buster, or how are
- 21:30you, Dora, don't just stand there? Yes, ma'am. The woman
- 21:37standing on the porch of the old house looks strangely out of place on this
- 21:41big western desert branch. Perhaps it was because of her close two toned sports
- 21:45shoes and a cris well tailored white linen dress that serve to accent the lines
- 21:48of a trim athletic figure and go perfectly with her short boys cut hair.
- 21:55Ms. Hashcher, this is mister Dollar Johnny doallna, mister dollar. Jack
- 22:00Kessler told me you were here, come in please, oh say thank you.
- 22:04I suppose he told you why I'm here? No, leave the door
- 22:07open for the breeze, he said, to investigate the death of my husband,
- 22:11Kevin and his brother's in that mine accident. It's it down, won't
- 22:15you thank you? Do you think it was an accident? According to mister
- 22:19Kestler, you don't why because it means his company would have to pay only
- 22:25a million and a half to me instead of three million. Somebody found pretty
- 22:27concrete evidence there in the mine that one of the rock pillars supporting the roof
- 22:32had been deliberately pulled down. Hard luck, Dennis. But you say is
- 22:37true, he must have done it. It was hard like who told me
- 22:40about it? Who showed me the winch that was used to do it?
- 22:42And that winch missus Haskell could have come from only one place around here,
- 22:47this ranch. Oh no, you mean no, you can't mean it's somebody
- 22:51here at the ranch? Did it kind of looks that way, doesn't it.
- 22:53But who? That's what I hoped you might be able to tell me
- 22:57who beside you could profit by the death of your husband and his brothers?
- 23:00Who here at the ranch? Alex Bundy? Perhaps Alex how by marrying into
- 23:07the family. What are you talking about? That is, of course,
- 23:10if one of the Haskell brothers were to die, Kevin, Perhaps that's absurd.
- 23:14Oh, I had a notion that you and Alex were someone interested in
- 23:18each other. Well, you're wrong. He may have been interested in me.
- 23:22He was. As a matter of fact, he made it very difficult
- 23:25for me. How do you mean that he kept trying to force his attentions
- 23:27on me and you didn't reciprocate it. Of course, not because we'll go
- 23:33on, Because I knew what his real motives were. All right, go
- 23:38on, this ranch, this ranch is what he wanted. He knew that
- 23:42Kevin wasn't well. That's why Kevin had come out here with his brothers in
- 23:47the first place. I did hear that he was having a little trouble with
- 23:49his lungs. Johnny, he didn't have long to live, not many years,
- 23:52that is, even in this hot, dry air. So Alex did
- 23:59it? Sure looks there with Johnny. What led you to look for him
