- 0:47Speaker 1: All right, let's go.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Joni was 90, she was a vociferous reader with a sharp mind, and we love to argue Maybe not your typical grandson-grandmother relationship, but that was us.
- 1:02Speaker 1: As I watched her fade, I pondered the meaning of the word legacy.
- 1:06Speaker 1: What constitutes a life well lived?
- 1:09Speaker 1: The world says you are what you do.
- 1:11Speaker 1: You're defined by what you gain, achieve or accomplish.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Kings build buildings, authors create characters and scientists make breakthroughs Tell in the hopes that what they did in life might outlive their mortal bodies.
- 1:24Speaker 1: By those standards, my grandma fell short.
- 1:26Speaker 1: She won't be mentioned in any history books and no buildings will be named after her, but I would argue that my grandma's legacy towers over the trivial achievements of rulers and the eroding possessions of billionaires.
- 1:38Speaker 1: In those last days of her life, the words of Solomon lingered in my mind.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I observed everything going on under the sun and really it is all meaningless, like chasing the wind.
- 1:48Speaker 1: As I watched my grandma struggle for breath, I was struck by a thought Her legacy is the intense, energetic, jesus-loving family who dropped everything to hold her hand as she was reunited with Bud, her husband, my grandpa, and stepped into the waiting arms of the one who made her Her personality.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Her love, her mentos, endlessly distributed to her adoring grandkids, will be missed, but her legacy is massive and inspiring and, in the words of martyred missionary Jim Elliott, he is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.
- 2:25Speaker 1: You ran the race well, grandma, and I look forward to arguing with you in heaven, all right.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Well, that's it for provoked and inspired quick hit, something a little different, something a little personal.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I hope you enjoyed it.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I hope that it gets you to reflect on your own sense of mortality and what a legacy is what a life well-lived looks like.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Give us a rating and review, share this with someone and I'll talk to you next time.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Peace.
