- 0:00SPEAKER_01: This is for anybody who's either starting their career and don't know where to start.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: And also somebody who's trying to level up, switching gears, maybe pivoting on industries.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: You need to position yourself not for the job that you're at right now, but for the job that you're trying to get.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Stay true to who you are.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: And keep showing up in the way that is true to you.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Because then that way the people that are gonna reach out to you, it's gonna be because of who you really are and not because you're trying to show up in the different way, and then there's a lot of mismatch.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: That you also have to have to have an understanding of what the role is and how that sits within the business.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: You really need to know your stuff.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: You cannot bluff anymore, and that's what I've been learning on these interviews.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: And how do you prepare for those?
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: The other prep advice I would give is a good recruiter should supply you with that information regardless of where you are in the company.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: What is it that they're trying to solve by bringing this role into the company?
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: You will never feel bad about overpreparing, but you will definitely regret not preparing enough.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: I know coffee.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I've been getting water.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: You're gonna love hearing this.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: It's been really hot in the area.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty sure it's hot in San Diego.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: And I'm a hot girl coffee.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: But I don't know if it's because I'm seeing all these girls drinking ice lattes on social media, but also the weather.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: I've been enjoying a nice ice latte in here and there.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: And I don't know, like I can, I think I can transition a little bit.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Once we get in the warm season, I go back to hot, but I must accept I've been really, really enjoying it.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: And I just got I just went to Starbucks yesterday, got an ice latte with sugar-free pumpkin spice and a tiny little bit of uh pumpkin cream to like make it foamy on top.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: I feel like I was still hitting the mark.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: It wasn't sugary, it was perfect, and it was really hot yesterday, so it really hit.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I'm an iced coffee girl.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Like I will drink iced coffee even when it's cold outside.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: I definitely prefer it.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: But I actually I love Trader Joe's like coffee line that they've got for fall.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: And so my thing has been they have cold foam and like whipped cream cans, it's great.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So I have the vanilla one and then I have the maple one that they came out for a seasonal flavor.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen a pumpkin cold foam, which I'm shocked because they're like so pumpkin core.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: But I did it, I didn't even know there was such a thing as like the cream, I thought it was just a syrup, but the cream really changes everything.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: I was like, wow, I'm guys.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: The Chobani coffee creamer, I don't think Trader Joe's carries it because Trader Joe's only carries like Trader Joe's items, right?
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: But the Chobonny coffee creamer is elite, like and they have a pumpkin one, they also have a peppermint one for the for the holidays for Christmas.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: But their creamers, like a little bit goes a long way, and I definitely suggest you look into that if you're gonna try some like coffee cream.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: I'll try.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: I enjoy really doing my coffee at home, like that's my joy, and so being able to do that and do a little sweet, sweet moment and latte moment, it's really good.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: What's interesting about Trader Joe's, and I think we can this is gonna put us into sideway to our conversation today, is they don't do any marketing, and really their added value is that they have their own products, which I was looking into that the other day and their strategy behind it, and I was like, you're right, you never seen Trader Joe's on the TV or social media or people talking about their products.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yet everybody goes to Trader Joe's and goes there for a reason, which is find really cool seasonal products that no one else has.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: And it's also I love the branding of the stores, they are super cute, they're kind of cozy, they have kind of wood inside.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: I don't know, it just makes me feel like I'm in some nice warming home.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Their frozen food options are really good too, but I think that their new little tote bag thing that they've been doing has really like elevated their scene too, because the line was insane.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and now when I see the bag, I'm like, it is cute, but I know that you waited a long time for that.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: I know, and I'm also the type of girl who I think I'm in top of audience who, you know, when they say it takes you seven times to look at something to then actually kind of start considering it.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: I'm on that mark.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: I'm not the type of person that it's FOMO in the oh, everyone is getting the new bear thing that Starbucks is coming up with that it sells out or the toad at Trinity Joe's.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: But once I start seeing it and seeing and seeing people talking about it, it just kind of starts doing something into my mind where I'm like, wait, actually, that's kind of cute.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: I kind of want it now.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: I'm so always late to the trend.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: And then once I start the trend, people are moving on to the next one.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: So I saw some posts the other day about how even when you're late to the trend, at least for like social media engagement, you should still post about it.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: But I don't know, I'm 50-50 online.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: I feel trends are move so fast, and if you're not chronically online, it's hard to catch on.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, Gary, he is real like a super savvy on stream.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, super good.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: He's talking about it and his social media is not what it used to be anymore.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: I think creators that are being super genuine, yeah, it's not social.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: People that are starting now, it's just about being genuine, staying true to who you are, and consistency.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Just keep putting it, putting it out there because it's not even people that are following you.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: It's more so social media looks at someone that is looking for relevant content.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: If your content is relevant to them, it's gonna be sent out to them even if they don't follow you.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: So it doesn't even matter if they follow you anymore.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: It's more so relevant content.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: It's not even social content, it's relevant content.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: And I was listening about that today.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: And it resonates because some of the creators that sometimes I like, I'm like, oh, I'm gonna follow them, never see their content again.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: So I try to unfollow them because now they appear on my fourth video.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: I don't follow people either for that reason.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: And it's just it's hard because like I want to follow them.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: I like their stuff.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Every time I follow someone, I stop saying it.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: But then to see it, I have to go to their profile and who's gonna talk in the time.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: So I just unfollow them so I can get their content.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: I think this is a good transition to what we're gonna talk about today, which is job searching and talking about where we're at right now.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's not news.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: We talk about this for a few years, how it's ups and downs.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: There's a ton of companies now hiring, but there's also a ton of people looking for jobs.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: The big guys, meta, are letting a lot of people go because with AI now they're automating a lot of their jobs.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: And so there's a lot going on.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: You go on LinkedIn and it's also an algorithm if you continue looking for things that people are losing jobs, and that's what all you're seeing.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: And then they're on the other side, all you're looking as companies looking and hiring because all the AI companies are coming in and trying to hire a ton of people.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: So I wanted to talk about it today because I myself am in that transition.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: As you guys know, I'm looking into moving to Hawaii, and so my only option is to be able to get a remote job here in the mainland, and so I can work from home.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: And also, a lot of people have been reaching out to me, asking me about where to start.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Some of them are okay, I really want to transition into my specific part of my careers.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Other people lost their jobs, and so honestly, when I'm going through it, even though it's tough, I do feel I have got a lot of knowledge because I'm doing the research every day, I'm applying.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: We talk about it.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Amanda is a numbers game, but also once you get the interviews, what do you do from there?
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: I just want to voice this conversation for those people that are feeling overwhelmed and just give them a little bit of light on it.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: And I know you've been through it in the past as well, so we can also share some experiences.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: So the job searching game is it's hard.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I don't know anybody who I you know what I take that back.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: I actually do know a couple people who have somehow gotten jobs pretty quickly, but a lot of people I know, more people than not, get really frustrated with the application process and the automated emails, and we see it on social media.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: And I know you and I have talked about too when you should be looking for new jobs, and it's not always because you lost a job, right?
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Like you might be looking for a new opportunity because you're just not vibing with your company anymore, or you want to use it to take a step up in your career and there's not current growth where you're at, all different reasons.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: And I I mean, I can tell you from personal experience that last time I really went through like a job search process, same kind of deal.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: I wasn't really getting any bites on my applications, my resumes.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: And then the bite that I got was one that I thought was not in full alignment.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: So I was really surprised.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: And I wish I knew what the answer was.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Why did that company reach out to me?
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: And I think part of it was some of my background aligned with what they're looking for, specifically having a news background and understanding a newsroom.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: But I was genuinely like, how did I get this interview?
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And I I might have been within the top 70 first applicants to apply.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: So, like, there's that part of it.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Like, are you number five to submit your resume or are you number like 385?
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Because they are gonna use AI tools to weed through that, and like you have to somehow bypass that, and it's just a whole thing.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: But yeah, so I got an interview for a company that I the the job description was just not in alignment with what I currently do.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but the skills were transferable.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: I did not get that job, but it was a I it's an interesting learning process because I did make it to the final round for that job.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: And looking at it, even though they said no at the end, I kind of took a step back and I was okay, what was it about my resume that I could transfer into this job description?
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: What worked, what didn't work.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: And then it's encouraging because it does show that you can get interviews for jobs and that yeah, and that aren't like directly the same.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: And it's also like showing you, and I think it show you that, oh, maybe I have an opportunity going on this direction based on some different experiences that they saw potential from your resume.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: I do want you to elaborate a little bit on some of the conversations and kind of like what type of job it was.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: But let's take it back really quick because I kind of want to put a little bit of technicality into the looking for jobs process so that it makes more sense for people.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: I'm feeling a little corporate talk today because I've been applying to so many jobs.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: I've been having a little bit of interviews and I feel my brain is rolling and can't let it go.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: And of course, I'm looking into the marketing space in sort of early stage companies because it's an opportunity for me to really grow with them.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: And also, I have a lot of experience already with product marketing, GTM, lead generation, and everything that comes with that, and in a type of environment where you have to build up playbooks infrastructure because there's none, right?
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: And so I kind of wanted to connect that looking for jobs into sort of like a marketing campaign strategy.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: And how do you go about it?
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: So there's five different things that you look into marketing, and it's the product, the target audience, the positioning, the messaging distribution, and then conversion.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: And how do you look at looking for jobs in that way?
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Is well, the product is you, right?
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: You're marketing yourself, you're putting yourself out into companies, you're trying to position yourself to be the best person that can possibly be for that role.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: Who's your target audience?
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: What type of companies are you trying to reach?
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: What industries?
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Sometimes it's not so much about the company, but is it in the industry, in the field, and the type of role that you're looking for?
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Positioning.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: How are you placing yourself with this company in terms of your experience?
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: How are you differentiating yourself from everyone else?
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: And what makes you a top candidate?
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: And then messaging is what are you putting on your resume?
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Are you showing up on LinkedIn?
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: What are you really doing?
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: And how are you telling your story?
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Distribution, how are you making those touch points?
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Well, one is applying.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Two, how are you showing up on LinkedIn again?
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Are you being active?
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Are you just sending resumes?
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Are you reaching out to recruiters?
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Are you posting on social media?
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Are you being loud about it, or are you just gonna go in a little bit MIA about it?
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: And the conversion is, well, getting that interview, but also how are you driving that interview down the line and into final set of interviews?
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: I kind of wanted to break it down because it helps me put a little bit of a structure as to how you go in a situation that you really don't know where to start.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: How are you presenting yourself in the beginning?
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: And that comes down to well, first your resume.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: How are you showing up on LinkedIn when a recruiter reaches out to you?
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: The first thing they go to is your LinkedIn.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: Honestly, I would say seven years ago LinkedIn wasn't relevant.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: I would say LinkedIn is priority top of mind now.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: They're gonna look at it.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: That's how you also find out who is interviewing you and you can do research on the company.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Amanda, based on your experience, what are some things that you have done to present yourself and be ready when you're applying?
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: And so you know, at the very least, without even saying a word, this is what they're gonna know about me based on what's out there.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my resume is definitely a story.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Like I keep a narrative component.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: I've had enough people tell me that you need more metrics on it to understand that you really should be showing the business outcomes on your resume.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: So it's like, this is what I do, and this is how it impacted my organization, versus just kind of having filler and fluff words.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: So I'd say those are the initial points right there.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: The reaching out to people on LinkedIn, I don't know if it always works.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: I have talked to a lot of people where your messages are just going unanswered, and that's to recruiters, that's to hiring managers, all of that.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: But you're right that they will go and look at your profile because I have definitely gone through the process where I've applied, and it was either within hours of applying or maybe of getting an initial interview.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: And I'm sure you see this too.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: All of a sudden, you see so-and-so at whatever company was looked at your LinkedIn.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: And you're like, okay.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Another part too that I was thinking about when you were sharing that is your job title.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: And this is one that I go back and forth on.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: And so I'll just use my current role, for example.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: I'm a master of ceremonies.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: That is my technical title within the company, kind of.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: They also call us tech presenters and tech editors.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: I can't tell you what's on my HR portal right now because it changes.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: One time I was an event director, which was just so incorrect, but I'm a master of ceremonies.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: That is what the job description said when I applied.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: What is that?
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: That's such an antiquated term.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: And that's such GK English.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: So for me, I know that putting master ceremonies doesn't represent my brand and who I am and what I do accurately.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Because I'm not simply a public speaker.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: I have to say something here.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Master of ceremonies sounds something wedding.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Is giving yeah, you're doing like I'm officiating.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Like, are you officiating the wedding?
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, totally.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Like it's not like not at all what I do.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: What I do, and one time the CEO of my company was like, What if we called you guys like editors in chief?
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: So, like to that point, it's very clear that we do so much more than master ceremonies.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: We look at executive conversations, we look at engagement, we facilitate them, we write the content to drive those conversations, to go on landing pages, so much more.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: So I know that if I put master ceremonies, it doesn't really represent what I do.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: So then I play this game of my LinkedIn doesn't say master ceremonies.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: It hasn't said it in a while because that doesn't show what I do.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: So that's another part of thinking about who am I when that recruiter initially sees my profile, whether it's now, whether it was years ago, all of that.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: It's such a game.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, I loved it.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: And this is the product, right?
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Us.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: We're talking about us and how to how are we showing up?
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: Something that I will say to what you said.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: You really need to advocate for yourself and put yourself first before you think of your company.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Your current company, it's not going to care.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: And I'm giving you this from experience.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: I was always afraid, just like you.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: My first marketing role was marketing advisor.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: What's marketing advisor?
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: It just doesn't matter.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Like are you just advising on like your ideas?
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm just oh yeah, you should do this.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: You should what I did was so much more than that.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: I was doing 360 marketing.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: I wasn't managing directly social media or but I was running campaigns.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: I was the owner of from the beginning strategy all the way to execution, working with the creative team.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: I was doing all of the facets of marketing strategy and campaigning, and marketing advisor wasn't cutting it.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: And I remember I was really nervous.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: That was the beginning of my career, and I was really nervous of changing my title because I was oh my god, absolutely.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: I was a border.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: Oh no, absolutely.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: And I recommend anyone who's trying to level up to change it to what actually speaks on a broader spectrum in terms of the industry.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Because yeah, companies, they're just gonna name their roles based on internal communication, and it doesn't really matter for the external world, but you want to position yourself as to no, this is my career, this is what I'm doing.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: And generally speaking, this is where my title falls.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: And then after that company, I moved to another company and they hired me for marketing manager client relationship.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: What does that mean?
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Again, well, yeah, I was doing marketing strategy, I was supporting our marketing lead into GTM, lead generation, all of that.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: But I also was working with clients, helping them with our SaaS, building up e-commerce websites on the user interface side, and then launching them.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: So, yes, I was doing client management, but there was a lot of marketing background happening there.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: So again, I was just like, I'm I'm a marketing manager.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: And if a company coming from outside who doesn't understand what's going on inside of the company, at the very least, they're like, okay, marketing manager, there they're managing projects, they are doing high intent and high impact marketing strategy because they have the marketing manager role.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: And so I think that you need to position yourself not for the job that you're at right now, but for the job that you're trying to get.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: And you know how they said you have to act out the role that you're trying to get.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's how you do it.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: And I would say the company doesn't care.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Your managers, they're not looking at you, unless they're really needy and really the culture is toxic.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: I don't think they're looking at your title and being like, oh my God, why did you change it?
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: That's not true.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Nobody's gonna say that because it's your LinkedIn, it's your personal place where you can showcase what you've been doing, your experience, and your current company shouldn't care.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Unless you're really going out there and lying about your experience.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: You know, just being, yeah, just not being, not having integrity on what you do.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: I think that's one.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, you touch on resume.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: Your resume should be short and keep it one page.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: This is not news to anybody.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: It has to be metric, how you actually created impact in the company, what some things that you've done that change infrastructure, that change programs, that change playing books, that you left that role better than how you started.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: It's not, oh, I did this and just listing everything that you did, but how that made the company better.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: I think that's always a really good mindset to have when working on your resume.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Numbers are great.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Numbers speak for itself.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: I know it's really hard sometimes to come up with a metric, but the metrics are there.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: It's just sometimes just they're just not really obvious.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: So you can always use AI to be like, okay, this is what I did in the company.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: Um, I actually solved a few problems here, and then we actually were doing better.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: We cut time by half or whatever, whatever it is.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: And then ChatGPT is gonna help you be like, okay, maybe this could be the metric.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: For instance, my first job, it was very metric driven, right?
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: We had MPS, we had specific KPIs that we had to meet every month, and we actually will meet up every month and go over those KPIs.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: So it was very metric driven.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: It was super easy to get metrics from there.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: From the other job where I got the marketing advisor role, there was really not metrics.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: It was very, very you have a portfolio, this is What you do, support, go and live, right?
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: And so I had to start building up my own metrics.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, how is showing impact?
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: How many clients am I managing?
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: How can I create metrics for the support that I'm providing in marketing?
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: And so that really helps you set yourself up for success to start building up that resume and make it strong.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: That being said, that is just the entrance point, right?
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Also, your LinkedIn, you mentioned the bio and all of that.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: It should really just be concise and position it for the role that you want to get.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: Again, don't talk about what you're already doing, but also put that experience into this is how I would do the role that I'm looking for.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: I think that's important.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: We go from the product into well positioning.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: I think we talk about that too, and then the messaging.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: I know you said that messaging people on LinkedIn doesn't work.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: And sometimes sending out resumes and it just feels it's going to this black hole universe that no company is going to look into.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: I will say, from my own experience, it is a numbers game as much as it is intentionality on how you show up on these accounts.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: And so on one side, apply to 50 companies in one day.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna hurt anybody, it's gonna take not that much time.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: You don't need to be changing your resume for every position.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Make sure that you get three different sets of resumes for different types of roles that you could be looking into.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Rotate them, A V testing, send those out.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: Don't spend too much time on it because I really genuinely think it's gonna make that much difference.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: Now we have AI, you can really hone in into your resume and optimize it and put all the keywords and all the things that you need to do.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: That's one side of it.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: The second side is I do think you need to be active while you are also trying to look for jobs.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: And it can make a big difference.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: And I believe in momentum.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: When I spend three weeks, I'm not getting role, I'm not getting interviews, I'm not getting calls, but I have been posting on social media.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Again, my personal experience is I am a marketer, so I'm trying to connect with people that are posting about cool campaigns that are happening, that are big, brands that are known.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: I've been engaging a lot.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: I used to think it was super cringe to comment on somebody's comment and just start a conversation, but it really does bring a lot of rich to you.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: And you never know.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: My last job, I got it because I posted something on LinkedIn.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: I immediately got six to seven likes and a ton of impressions, and then I got reached out by the recruiter of that job, and the conversation was really fast.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: You never know what's gonna move the needle.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: And again, you're showing up as an expert, right?
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: I comment on a lot of campaigns that are happening.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: There was this makeup campaign that I saw that it was like interesting and it caught my attention.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: It also resonates to me.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: I think that's very important to stay true to who you are and keep showing up in the way that is true to you.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Because then that way, the people that are gonna reach out to you, it's gonna be because of who you really are and not because you're trying to show up in the different way, and then there's a lot of mismatch.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: I commented on that one, people liked it, and people commented back.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: And then there's a lot of other campaigns.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: I don't want to get into specific things, but I do feel showing up, being active in the industry that you're trying to grow in.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: I really do think that makes a big difference.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: And where I want to finish that section is you have to create momentum.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: I really, really do believe in momentum.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: When I spend a few weeks pushing LinkedIn content, applying, sending messages, even if I don't get anything back.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: I kid you not, I start getting a ton of reach outs later on, and they come in groups.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: And then I go for a time where it's like nothing, and then again I get reach outs.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: So I do feel you have to create momentum in different ways.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: Um, and that's how I've been getting interviews.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: I think it also depends, though, like what your career is, because my friends who work in field marketing have had an easier time getting a new job than other people I know who are in different verticals.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: And I'm in the weird niche area of comms.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: Like I do executive communications or executive engagement comms, however you want to say it.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: And those jobs are far and few.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: And so for someone like me, I've never worked at a PR agency and I've never done proper PR, but I've been the news person that you reach out to.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: So I've personally never seen a lot of recruiter activity on my LinkedIn profile in the many years I've used LinkedIn and gone through periods of trying to find jobs.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: I really never have.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: And I know you and I have talked about this offline before.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: Your experience with recruiters is drastically different than mine.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I've posted content that gets a lot of impressions or gets a lot of engagement on LinkedIn, but it never really makes a difference from the job search for me.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: But I do think there's still something to be said to post the kind of personality that aligns with the job that you want to have or your expertise is because you are showing that you're an expert.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: And to your point, you never know who will see that.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Or if you are someone who's applying for jobs and that recruiter at a company goes to your LinkedIn, that could help influence the decision to actually do a first round interview.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: From there, though, I mean, after the first round, you're really just trying to sell yourself to the second, the third, however many rounds it takes.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: And those people probably aren't looking at your LinkedIn as much because they're usually hiring managers and decision makers that are too busy.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: But yeah, that initial step, the initial contact.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: And that's what I was addressing, the initial contact.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: And I love that you brought the once you get the interview.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's transition into that because one thing is knocking on the door and having the door being open.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: But once you're there, what you do with that is very important, right?
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: Because now you're gonna have to, and this is what they call how do you drive the conversations and these audiences down the funnel, right?
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Based on the conversations and the imagery that you have.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: Being on that side as well, a lot of the people that I'm having interviews with are the CEO of the company, the CEOs, the GTM founder of the company, really high executive level positions and people that I was not used to having conversations with.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: It's not just a hiring manager, it's not just, oh, you're just gonna come in and level up.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: No, you're gonna show up and you you've already leveled up for these roles and you have to wear many hats.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: It's very important to also address how to prepare for this.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: The way I was preparing for interviews three, even two years ago, has completely shifted of how I do it now.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: You will never feel bad about over-preparing, but you will definitely regret not preparing enough.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I think like to your point, even if you don't get the job, if you know that you did everything you could have possibly done in preparation, you can't do anything other than look back and say, you know what, I did my best.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: But if you did not do everything, then it's different.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: And and I agree with you.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: My thinking of how I applied to my first couple jobs was so different.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Granted, I was in news too.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: So you show a portfolio of work, I would send my reel, and that's how I'd get a job.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: But the job that I had after that, I I didn't do any weird things, I just had some conversations.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: But then the job that I'm in currently, I had to go in and meet with who would be my boss and did a work example live in person there, where she left me in a room for like 20 minutes or something, and I had to rewrite this piece of content.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: And and then I've had another interview where I had to make an entire presentation.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: And so, and part of that is probably also the level of roles that we're now applying to, but yeah, drastically different from where it was before.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: And that's the way that I prep.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: No, and that's the beauty about growing in your career.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: You have to level up.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: And for somebody who is starting their career, right?
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: Speaking to those people, get your foot on the door.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: If you've had some experiences, really blow up those experiences and really speak on those and how you create impact.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: Probably the interview process of the hiring manager is gonna be like not so much about, okay, this person is to know it all, because it's completely out of this world, an entry-level position.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: People are already like, oh, four years of experience or whatever.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: It's like, what do you mean?
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: How am I gonna show up with four years of experience?
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: I just graduated from college.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: There's no way.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: I think in those situations, they are looking for potential, they are looking that you're coachable, they are looking that you have the right attitude, they are looking for somebody who's gonna be a team player, who's gonna be open to be mentored into the role, right?
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Focus on that.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: You're gonna show up.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: Obviously, you don't have the experience, blow up the little experiences that you have.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: And it's really how you speak about yourself in a clear way.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: For where we're at right now, Amanda, and I was looking at how people prepare on LinkedIn.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: It's not just asking the questions of, oh, how's the culture of the company?
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: Scratch all of that.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: We are already talking to people that are funding companies, two people that if this is a third time round that they're building up a company, they don't care about the bluff.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: They need to know concrete answers.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: If you can throw a metric or two, that's great.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: You really need to know your stuff.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: You cannot bluff anymore.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: And that's what I've been learning on these interviews.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: And how do you prepare for those?
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: It literally takes two days, and that's where I was making the mistakes.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: It takes two days to you preparing for them because also you like what I would do now.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: But how are you doing it?
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: So you make mistakes and you learn and you optimize, right?
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: Well, first, I just grab data from everywhere about the company, put it on Chat GPT, and synthesize that that information.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: And then Chat GPT says, okay, who is the person that is gonna interview?
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: This is probably gonna be their angle and all of that.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: That is one, right?
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: And it's very long, and that within itself takes a day of just going over every single possible question that this type of person is going to ask you based on the role.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: You're gonna be interviewed by the hiring manager of that role.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: So that is gonna be very technical and very specific as to what you will be doing and how you'll be collaborating with this person.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: But say that, okay, that's GTM, right?
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: But then the CFO is talking to you.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: So what do they care about?
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: They care about their finances, they care about how revenue is affecting the company.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: And it's like all tied to a different angle in the business.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: And so you need to prepare questions based on that person's top of mind and focus.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: And so that's what I learned too.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: Because I'm like, okay, well, yeah, my experience and my technicality, I can always apply that and talk to different people in the company and different stakeholders.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: But at the end of the day, each person is gonna have a conversation that they care about and they're thinking and how you role is gonna affect their line of business.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: And so just to prepare for the role, I would say a day.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: I was giving like 10 different questions of possible questions that I will get and reviewing those.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: And the other, I would say day or half day, learning about the company.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: What other companies are the competitors of this company?
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: And what are they doing right?
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: And what are they not doing right?
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: And what is the differentiator of that company that you're going for?
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: How is this company make revenue?
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: If it's a public company, you gotta know how this company makes revenue because how your role comes in and supports, at the end of the day, that's the end goal for the company to make revenue.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: For whatever reason, they're trying to expand and bring in you to support that.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: So at the very least, you need to know that.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: Learn about the trajectory path of the people that are interviewing you.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: What other companies have they been to?
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: What's their background?
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: What are some things that they enjoy?
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: You gotta know all those things because as much as it is an interview for the technical side, you also need to show up as a person and be likable.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: And you have to be able to drive those conversations.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: And learning about the company and knowing all of those little things, it does take some time.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: So look at the website, what's working, what's not working, especially from a marketing perspective.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Like they're probably gonna say, like, oh, you probably look at our website.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I did.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: I did look at your website, some links weren't working, your social media wasn't even there.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: All of those things you have to anticipate and be already in the node because they are gonna surprise you with some of those things.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: What happened to you, Amanda?
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: They put you in a different place and you have to write down or write up our content and then probably present it.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: But it doesn't have to be perfect.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: I just think that they wanna see how you go about problem solving, how your mind functions.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: And because we are applying to these high-level roles, they need to know how you work.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: And I think putting you in those examples is how they figure out.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: They kind of see, oh yeah, this is how she works, and this is gonna work out for the role, and then this is how I would probably work with her.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: So they're actually picturing how you come in and immediately start working with them.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: That's how I approach it.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Hopefully that was helpful, but I'm also curious to learn how you do it on your side.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that there's some things too that are different.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: Hearing you break it down because you look at marketing roles, you're looking at different parts of the business.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: And because if I'm looking at uh an internal comms role, for example, my questions change.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: So I think that you also have to have to have an understanding of what the role is and how that sits within the business.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: So for me, I wouldn't be so focused on competitors and what they're doing for an internal comms role.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: I would be focused on like what are the pain points right now internally?
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: Where's communication falling flat?
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: What is getting lost downstream?
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: Those kinds of questions.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: And so your questions have to be applicable for the role and the people you're talking to.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: And then, like to your point, I had an interview one time with three senior decision makers at the same time.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: And they kicked it off by the one of the decision makers asking if the other guy had a diet coke with him when we met in his big gold cup.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: And it was a funny little like human moment right at the top of the interview where it was like, okay, like you guys are showing me your personality, and I get to show you mine for a second before we just talk business for 20 plus minutes.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: I feel like go ahead.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say, I kind of love that because the moment they go on the camera, if you're having a virtual moment or even if you go into a room.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's so much tension because you are building up this thing.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: And when they do something human like that, it really relaxes your nervous system.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: And you're like, you know, it's okay.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: At the end of the day, I will say something, and I'm gonna let you continue.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: They're also only humans, and I think we always need to go back to that.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: They're only humans, they're just like another person that is trying to look for something.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: It's not this God that you're presenting everything, and they're also made mistakes.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: So I feel like putting that humanity on them helps you also scale back and be able to show up in your more authentic way without being extremely nervous.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it also humanizes them.
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: And and then for me, too, the other prep advice I would give is use AI to have a conversation, as weird as it might sound, because you need someone to analyze your answers.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: And I think it's really beneficial, even if it's just AI.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: If you have somebody who knows that role and can help you with your answers, great.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: But in my position, I don't really have that.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: So I would just talk to Claude, you know, and do the audio and have Claude ask you questions.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: And to your point, figure out what are some typical questions that you would be asked for this role and based off of who's interviewing you.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: I'm a big proponent of asking the recruiters that reach out to you.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: A good recruiter should supply you with that information regardless of where you are in the company.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: And I can tell you almost every interview process I've done, I've been able to ask the recruiter, and they've told me, okay, this is what you should focus on.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: This is what you need to be sharing.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: This these are the questions, this is what their focus is.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: And then using that to help shape what your conversations are going to be with them.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: That actually is really, really, really good advice.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: I've never done that.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, I always do.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: And they never done that.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: Like, I've yeah, I've never had one not tell me.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: I've even had one time I had the recruiter tell me right at the start.
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: So we got through the first 30-minute phone call, which the first round's usually like, are you who you say you are?
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Is your resume accurate?
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: Are your skills accurate to your resume, or did you just bullshit us and lie?
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: That's usually the first call.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: They're just doing a little background check basically.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: But I had a recruiter one time that right after that email, going to the second round, they're like, here's what to expect.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: So I didn't even have to ask.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: But yeah, for the third round, I had to ask.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: And then I've had other processes where I've asked right off the top for all of them.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: And yeah, it's like, here's what this person's interested in.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: Maybe they're focused on trust, maybe they're focused on relationships, maybe they're focused on blah, blah, blah.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: And that way you have an idea because going in blind is weird.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: It's really hard, especially.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna give an example to your point because I recently had that experience.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: My second interview killed it because everything that Chat GPT prepared me for were the conversations that we had.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: I even walked out of that.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, I could have had like 30 more minutes of questions because I was ready.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: And every every single question I just answer short, concise, to the point.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: I was so confident.
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: And to be honest, confidence is really what's gonna move the needle in these conversations at the end of the day.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: They need to know that you what you're talking about, you're sure about it.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: I passed this around, and the one that I killed, the interview that I killed was the person that I would be reporting.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: So it was very technical.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: It was very about the role, how we would collaborate with each other.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: It was really good.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: The next person was the BP of client executive, some role that.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: And so immediately I was like, okay, I'm gonna prepare the same, I'm gonna put a chat GPT, figure out his background, all that.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: I prepared for this interview completely different than from the interview before, and it was about a client facing client obsessed, because of course he was the BP for client executives, he's on the facing client side.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: All of the sales team reports to this person, and this is how they actually drive pipeline.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: So I was like client obsessed.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: How do we position ourselves in front of clients?
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: I showed up and the conversation was more technical and more it wasn't so much about my role, but he was very curious on the marketing side, which never happens with somebody who's not in marketing.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: And I knew what I was talking about.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: It's just that I was so prepared for such a different type of conversation that throughout the interview I was just thrown off.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: And it was hard for me to reset my brain and be like, oh, wait, this is the type of conversation that he's trying to have with me.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: And in hindsight, this happened and it was really cool.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: I have AI note-taking for like all of my Google meetings, and obviously in interviewing, they don't allow them, but he asked me, like, oh, it's okay, like if you want to have it, and I was like, Oh, sure.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: I went back and reviewed that conversation, and it was just so uh frustrating to hear his questions when I was just now just reviewing them because I was like, oh my god, his questions were fair, so simple, especially because he wasn't really looking for the super in-depth technical side, which is the conversation that I had before.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: He just wanted to know more about it, coming from somebody who's not in marketing.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: And I was, yeah, I just completely prepare and missed the mark of the conversation.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: And if I would have done what you did, would have talked to the recruiter and she would have been like, hey, he actually is really interested in the marketing side and probably wants you to explain to him.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: Like, if which would have given me a direction, I would have been more prepared for it.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: But it's so crazy how you can be really ready and it could have been a really easy conversation, but because you didn't prepare correctly, it wasn't like didn't prepare, it was that I didn't prepare accordingly to how the conversation was gonna go, and that lifts you so unwell.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it does because you're like shit.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: I like prepare, I spent all this time, and yeah, it wasn't even like what the conversation was going to be.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: I would be so frustrated.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Did you get another interview after that, or is that the last one?
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, guys, I'm still waiting.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, you are?
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: That was last Friday, and you never know.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: You never know.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, at the end of the day, it is it is what it is, and now I will never make that mistake again.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: I told myself, I'm never making that mistake.
- 43:53SPEAKER_01: I'm going back and looking.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: And that's the part where AI can mess you up, right?
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: You can get all the help and Sometimes he really would hit the points.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: And sometimes it would be so off that you need to do your own research and not just rely on AI.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: I should have gone.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: I I did look at his role, but I honestly thought it was gonna be on the, I said on the client side.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: And then I would look up and I was like, oh no, wait, actually, you know, he is a little bit more strategy.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: Like he's done a few roles, and I was like, oh my God, if I would have known that, I would have changed that conversation completely different.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: But yeah, we're still waiting.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, if they saw my potential and they saw that I know my stuff, this still could be let's move her to the next round and see more, right?
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: Maybe there's a level of curiosity that I still create it, but we never know.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: At the end of the day, there is just so much you can do.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: And there's also did that person like you at a human level?
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: They buy with you or they don't, and unfortunately, that is out of your control.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: You're not everyone's cup of tea, and that's okay.
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: Because if you stay true to yourself, know there is a place and a role for every single person.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: You just need to find it.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: And I wanna finish this little rant here by addressing something that you said that is really important.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: Of course, both of our roles are very different.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: So the way I go about doing research is completely different than how you do it.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: But I think that's part of the preparation.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: I think this is a very fundamental thing to do before you even start getting ready for a interview.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: You need to look at the role that they're hiring for and figure out what is the problem within their organization.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: And my problem is not that things are wrong, it's just like what is it that they're trying to solve by bringing this role into the company?
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: And that's your angle of preparation.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: Because obviously, if they're trying to expand and you're the first hire for the communications role, okay, that's gonna position me like, okay, no, they're they're gonna need somebody who's gonna come in and build that infrastructure and start building up the the executive communication and do the first playbook, and that is gonna position it different from like, oh no, you're gonna join the communication team of a company that has been around for 10 years.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: Maybe the problem that they're trying to solve is completely different and more specific to give it direction.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to think of the last job description that I had interviews for, and if I could have figured out that angle, and like truthfully, off the top of my head, I don't know if I could have, but I will say that asking those questions initially in the interviews will get you those answers because I did learn how willing to be open those hiring managers and the decision makers were because I remember going through that process and and very, very quickly for my role too, very quickly figured out what was going on and why they were hiring for this position, where the need was.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: And it's just because I had a conversation and I asked the questions.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: And then for someone like me, I also like to piece information together.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: So, what the hiring manager told me if I could take that and tie it into the next conversation, I did that.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: And then if I could tie that into the third conversation, I did that.
- 47:10SPEAKER_00: And then when I was in that presentation, not only did I have a prompt that I was supposed to be building a presentation off of, but I already had all of this information of where their pain points were, where they were struggling, what the need was for this role, and to like really build out a narrative structure in that last round.
- 47:27SPEAKER_00: But I do think I think we should leave our episode on a little clip hanger on what's gonna happen with this role.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: And I hope that you ask the recruiter if you do get the next round, you can send that message and be like, hey, what's up?
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: And then when you and I get to debrief again, then we can give everyone an update.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: I'll give the update that.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: To make it even more interesting, I'm waiting on two companies right now.
- 47:49SPEAKER_01: So I'm just gonna be sitting here on this this one, different timing.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: The second company I'm waiting for the third round.
- 47:58SPEAKER_01: The company that I was talking to, I'm waiting for the fourth round, which will be the final round.
- 48:03unknown: Okay.
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: No presentations or assignments for these companies, which I'm really appreciating because I'm not trying to work for free.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: But yeah, we'll we'll leave people wondering and see what happens.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: All in all, I want to finish this episode by saying this is for anybody who's either starting their career and don't know where to start, and also somebody who's trying to level up, switching gears, maybe pivoting on industries.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: We hope that we answer some of the questions.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: I am definitely in the nitty-gritty of looking for a different job.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: At the end of the day, stay true to yourself.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: Do what you need to do.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: If you don't get the interview, the takeaway is you can experience, you're never gonna make the mistakes that you did again.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: You keep optimizing the right company is gonna come for you because it's not just them doing an interview on you, you're also doing an interview on them.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: I think it's very, very important that you keep that angle because once you commit to a company, I always remember this.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: This has happened in the last, the last role that I accepted, which I knew it was temporary from the beginning.
- 49:10SPEAKER_01: But once you sign that contract, you know that you're signing part of so much part of your life in it, and it's where you're gonna spend a lot of time, and it's probably what's gonna bring a lot of stress in your life.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: So make sure that you are also interviewing them because you are saying yes to something that is gonna be a huge part of your life, and you wanna do it with the peace of mind, and you wanna still love your life and enjoy while working.
- 49:38SPEAKER_01: So hope this conversation was helpful for all of you guys out there struggling, all of us strugglers out here.
- 49:47SPEAKER_01: And Amanda, I'm gonna let you take us home because we haven't done it in a while.
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: I was hoping you weren't gonna do that.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: Speaking of speaking of throwing you a core ball, think I've had enough coffee today to do it.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: I actually was just thinking about how I need more coffee.
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: Coffee's always good.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: I do have my coffee.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'll take us home.
