- 0:00Speaker 1: We're gonna break down the draft. What will a successful
- 0:04Speaker 1: Eagles draft look like? Adam Kaplan from the Inside of
- 0:07Speaker 1: the Birds podcast, which you can get on all podcasting platforms,
- 0:12Speaker 1: joined us now to map that out for us right
- 0:15Speaker 1: now on the Sports Bash. Adam, Well, just two days
- 0:18Speaker 1: away finally from the NFL Draft.
- 0:21Speaker 2: You know, it's funny, Mike, that was kind of you
- 0:24Speaker 2: and I have done a lot of different segments over
- 0:26Speaker 2: the years, and you've asked me sometimes like what how
- 0:30Speaker 2: wold Eagles feel if they did this? Well, I've taken
- 0:32Speaker 2: that to another level. I've take what you suggested and
- 0:35Speaker 2: try to do something different. What will a successful Eagles
- 0:38Speaker 2: draft look like? And that's right now what we're going
- 0:41Speaker 2: to discuss.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Yeah, let's look at some of the things that they
- 0:45Speaker 1: need to accomplish Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Don't forget it's
- 0:49Speaker 1: more than just the twenty third pick. They do have
- 0:52Speaker 1: nine picks in this draft. So what do you is
- 0:56Speaker 1: top of the list of things they need to get done.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I think it's actually eight. Let me just double check
- 1:03Speaker 2: on what they have here, three four foot they actually
- 1:07Speaker 2: have eight.
- 1:08Speaker 1: It's oh, they trade it one away in the Wigs deal.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yep, yes, yeah. So on your point about they have
- 1:14Speaker 2: now eight let's give you those. They have the twenty
- 1:16Speaker 2: third pick, which is theirs in the first round. The
- 1:20Speaker 2: second round they have number fifty four which is theirs,
- 1:23Speaker 2: and the third round they have two sixty eight via
- 1:26Speaker 2: the Hassan Radick trade. By the way, they got pretty
- 1:28Speaker 2: good value on that. I know it seemed crazy at
- 1:30Speaker 2: the time, but his career is takeing to nosedive the
- 1:33Speaker 2: third round, the third round or number ninety eight, it
- 1:36Speaker 2: is compensitory. Third day picks. They have two four say
- 1:40Speaker 2: one to fourteen, which where they moved up to the
- 1:43Speaker 2: City Brown trade. That trade Mike, unless he plays on defense,
- 1:47Speaker 2: that's just that's great value. And I don't know what
- 1:50Speaker 2: Cunningham was doing now he didn't. Cuttingham was not here
- 1:54Speaker 2: in Philly when City Brown was was drafted by the Eagles.
- 1:57Speaker 2: He had left before that, so I don't quite understand
- 1:59Speaker 2: that one. But number the other fourth rounders competitory, the
- 2:02Speaker 2: fifth rask as a compic and the sixth rounders also
- 2:06Speaker 2: via the City Brown trade from the Falcons. Their last
- 2:10Speaker 2: pick overall, which is number eight, number one ninety seven
- 2:13Speaker 2: in the sixth round.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Well, the eight picks there, and obviously they do have
- 2:18Speaker 1: a lot of needs here. I mean, this is one
- 2:20Speaker 1: of those years where, hey, you won the division, You're
- 2:23Speaker 1: coming off a Super Bowl two years ago. You know
- 2:25Speaker 1: you're you have holes on this team. So I don't
- 2:28Speaker 1: know if there's a number one hole versus number three hole,
- 2:31Speaker 1: But what is a successful weekend?
- 2:35Speaker 2: All right? One thing I do want to address because
- 2:37Speaker 2: you just talked about it, and I'm going to explain
- 2:40Speaker 2: why I'm going in this direction. So about seven or
- 2:43Speaker 2: eight years ago, I'm visiting forty nine ers camp and
- 2:46Speaker 2: I questioned an interview with John Lynch, the general manager
- 2:51Speaker 2: of the of the forty nine ers. And you know,
- 2:53Speaker 2: I know John casually, and I'm sitting in his office.
- 2:56Speaker 2: So John, how's it going. You know, you guys have
- 2:58Speaker 2: a lot of work to do, a lot you know,
- 3:00Speaker 2: I know you're changing the roster. And he said, I
- 3:02Speaker 2: want to show you something, and he takes out a lamined,
- 3:05Speaker 2: laminated piece of paper and it says the following, I
- 3:09Speaker 2: remember like it is yesterday. You cannot solve every issue
- 3:12Speaker 2: in one offseason. And the reason why he uses that,
- 3:15Speaker 2: he and Kyle Shanahan, is because when you have a
- 3:19Speaker 2: lot of needs, their need for a reason, you know,
- 3:23Speaker 2: whether you decided to trade a player away or a
- 3:25Speaker 2: guy retired, whatever reason, you have these needs when you've
- 3:29Speaker 2: got seven or eight like the Eagles need for the future,
- 3:31Speaker 2: by the way, this year, just to compete the season,
- 3:33Speaker 2: they don't have nearly as many. But his point was,
- 3:36Speaker 2: you can't just start trying to plug up poles just
- 3:40Speaker 2: to win the season when it's all about the big
- 3:42Speaker 2: picture and everything as we transition to what will successful
- 3:46Speaker 2: Eagles draft look like, it's about the future. It's very
- 3:49Speaker 2: little to do about this season. And that's the way
- 3:51Speaker 2: it always should be.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Yep. And well, and this is a two prong thing
- 3:55Speaker 1: here because obviously, you know, you take a position like
- 3:59Speaker 1: tight end. They might need a tight end, maybe not
- 4:02Speaker 1: this year, but they don't for the future. They definitely
- 4:05Speaker 1: will need someone because I don't know how many more
- 4:07Speaker 1: years you can keep doing a one year deal with dodterd.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I know, it's amazing. He really loves being an Eagle,
- 4:11Speaker 2: by the way, I was told by someone close to him.
- 4:13Speaker 2: So eighty eighth back seven million, fully guaranteed. See on
- 4:16Speaker 2: your point, Mike Godds deals up, Kaka Terrist deals up
- 4:19Speaker 2: Johnny Muntz deals up after the season. Cam Lattus the
- 4:24Speaker 2: only show Stone Smarter they gave to. They guarantee two
- 4:27Speaker 2: hundred and twenty five thousand. The only tight ends under
- 4:32Speaker 2: contract of the seven past the season or Jahem Bell
- 4:34Speaker 2: and e J. Jenkins both are almost certain not to
- 4:37Speaker 2: make the team unless they are slow of injuries. So
- 4:39Speaker 2: they're just developmental backups, third or four string tight ends.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So yeah, they need an answer that now. If they don't,
- 4:45Speaker 2: it's not the end of the world. I know this
- 4:47Speaker 2: is one of the deepest tight end dress we've ever seen,
- 4:49Speaker 2: no question about it. But they don't have to do
- 4:52Speaker 2: it just because of that. You want to address it, absolutely,
- 4:55Speaker 2: trust me, the Eagles have. This is a goal. But
- 4:58Speaker 2: when you start saying we have to do this, that's
- 5:01Speaker 2: when you make mistakes.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you what the tight end spot. Yes,
- 5:06Speaker 1: that one, and we thought too, Adam, we talked about
- 5:08Speaker 1: this last year. We thought they were going to draft
- 5:09Speaker 1: a successor to Dallas got it. They did not take
- 5:13Speaker 1: a tight end in the draft last year. So addressing
- 5:16Speaker 1: the tight end of the future most likely happens Thursday Friday,
- 5:22Speaker 1: most likely not on maybe Saturday. Who knows. I guess
- 5:25Speaker 1: you can get somebody a little later in there. What
- 5:28Speaker 1: else is on the list for an Eagles draft.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, they really need to and I know this
- 5:33Speaker 2: is a priority for them, is funding their future successor
- 5:37Speaker 2: for Lane Johnson, who very well could be playing this
- 5:39Speaker 2: last year as an NFL player with Lane's injuries, mid
- 5:43Speaker 2: thirties and just kind of looking for the future. It's
- 5:48Speaker 2: just kind of funny how they drafted Lane in twenty thirteen.
- 5:52Speaker 2: It was Chip Kelly and Howie Roseman. Oh, the Chip
- 5:55Speaker 2: wanted somebody else, Dean Jordan, and thankfully he didn't get him.
- 6:01Speaker 2: They got Lane Johnson. They wanted him Lane to play
- 6:04Speaker 2: left tackle replace Jason Peters. Obviously he played right the
- 6:07Speaker 2: first year. Lane told him. I was told. Then in
- 6:11Speaker 2: twenty fourteen, hey, listen, I want to stay here at
- 6:13Speaker 2: right tackle. They agreed, stalin a great Howie agreed, and
- 6:17Speaker 2: that's what a great decision that was. Then they tried
- 6:20Speaker 2: in twenty nineteen to replace Jason Peters with Andre Dillard.
- 6:23Speaker 2: That didn't work. But Howie to witch credit is, look,
- 6:27Speaker 2: yes did he miss and Andrew Jillard, Yes he did,
- 6:30Speaker 2: But he's always looking towards the future and he didn't.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Sometimes he hasn't done it, and it's it's been a mistake.
- 6:39Speaker 2: But why is he the best GM? It took him
- 6:42Speaker 2: a number of years to figure it out. It's about
- 6:44Speaker 2: the future and doing their best to get Lane Johnson's
- 6:47Speaker 2: replacement in this draft is certainly a priority for them.
- 6:50Speaker 2: But just to finish that second guy off that right tackle.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It's not like they haven't looked before. Sometimes the board
- 6:56Speaker 2: doesn't work out and you can't force it. So if
- 6:59Speaker 2: they don't do that, it's not for lack of looking
- 7:01Speaker 2: or trying. Just so people understand that, all.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Right, And then we obviously know they need a edge rusher,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and I guess you know it's going to be hard
- 7:09Speaker 1: because they have taken again, like you said, they've taken
- 7:11Speaker 1: some edge rushers. They took one in the seventh round,
- 7:13Speaker 1: the Virginia Tech kid, and they tried to find some
- 7:16Speaker 1: diamonds in the rough, you know, in these drafts. Nolan
- 7:19Speaker 1: Smith obviously they took in the first round. They got
- 7:21Speaker 1: him at thirty, they got Jayleen's fun so they have
- 7:24Speaker 1: always seemingly tried to find an edge rusher.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Yeah, you were talking about Powell Ryland Man. I'll be
- 7:31Speaker 2: honest I thought. I know his numbers were ridiculous his
- 7:34Speaker 2: final two years of Virginia Tech. But what I've learned
- 7:37Speaker 2: is NFL people know more than you and I. There's
- 7:39Speaker 2: a reason why the guy dropped to the sixth round.
- 7:41Speaker 2: He's now with I believe Cincinnati, Mike. So, yeah, you're right.
- 7:46Speaker 2: They've been looking for this guy. They tried really hard
- 7:49Speaker 2: to keep Jalen Phillips and it didn't work out. They
- 7:52Speaker 2: just were not going to go to his number of
- 7:54Speaker 2: not only thirty million, Mike, the guarantee its sign was massive.
- 7:57Speaker 2: His agent did a great job. I just look that
- 8:01Speaker 2: that happens sometimes. So yeah, they they've already told you
- 8:04Speaker 2: that they want an upgrade because they try to get
- 8:06Speaker 2: Jalen Phillips back, and they were gonna pay him a big,
- 8:08Speaker 2: big money. Honestly, from what I'm told, twenty five million
- 8:12Speaker 2: is not a correct number. It's it's it's a number
- 8:15Speaker 2: that they they got to. But they might have been
- 8:18Speaker 2: willing to give more than that, but I don't believe
- 8:20Speaker 2: it got there. And so the bottom line is, don't
- 8:25Speaker 2: just We've been talking about Jonathan Bernard now for like
- 8:27Speaker 2: six weeks via draft or trade, Mike Now what happens
- 8:31Speaker 2: if they don't get that guy? Okay, before we move
- 8:33Speaker 2: on here to the point number four, what what happens? Well,
- 8:37Speaker 2: they have enough guys. They've got Nolan Smith. We know
- 8:40Speaker 2: he's a better run defender than he's an edgresser. At
- 8:43Speaker 2: this point, Jagsna really came on, but he still needs
- 8:46Speaker 2: time to develop. Ronnd Ebakehetti who they always like, Joe Tryon, Chayenka.
- 8:51Speaker 2: So they have enough guys to get through the season,
- 8:53Speaker 2: but they don't have that a level pass rusher. And
- 8:56Speaker 2: that's why, Mike, he's that they want to address this position.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And according to reports, the ask for Jonathan Gernardo gave
- 9:03Speaker 1: Day two pick, Day two premium pick. There the Eagles
- 9:08Speaker 1: have what three of those? I think one second and
- 9:11Speaker 1: two third?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Is that right, Mike? The problem is in the second
- 9:15Speaker 2: round they're picking. Remember they're picking fifty four overall, so
- 9:21Speaker 2: it's not a great pick. I'm it's a second round pick,
- 9:23Speaker 2: but it's not like it's not like in the thirties.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Yeah, fifty four, sixty eight and ninety eight, right, right.
- 9:29Speaker 2: So here's the thing, Grenard. It's fascinating because they fired
- 9:35Speaker 2: the general manager that acquired him. And the guy running
- 9:39Speaker 2: the draft for them, Rob Razinski, who's a great contract negotiator.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Razinski is going to rely on the people who work
- 9:46Speaker 2: for him, and he's not you know, he's not a
- 9:48Speaker 2: tape guy. So they're in a kind of a tough spot.
- 9:51Speaker 2: But they've what I'm told is they've given him the
- 9:54Speaker 2: power to do what he needs to do. Now, the
- 9:58Speaker 2: problem is there's they've been, as I underst they've been
- 10:00Speaker 2: far apart on what Grenard wants and what they're willing
- 10:04Speaker 2: to do. So that that's something and how he is,
- 10:06Speaker 2: there's no better opportunities in the National Football League. They
- 10:09Speaker 2: knowing through how he's owned sources, who's available, Like when
- 10:13Speaker 2: they got Gardner Johnson, right, Yeah, I know for a
- 10:16Speaker 2: fact he knew that they were having extension problems with
- 10:19Speaker 2: Gardner Johnson. Saints weren't going to do it. They had
- 10:20Speaker 2: no interest in doing it. They didn't want them. How
- 10:23Speaker 2: he got them right before the Seaton start. Remember they
- 10:24Speaker 2: were really bad at safety. He did a great job.
- 10:27Speaker 2: So yeah, Howie will be If it's not Grenard, it's
- 10:29Speaker 2: either going to be a draft or somebody else.
- 10:30Speaker 1: All Right, you just mentioned Chauncey Gardner Johnson. They needed
- 10:34Speaker 1: a safety. They went out and got him, not once,
- 10:36Speaker 1: but twice. Do they have a starting safety or is
- 10:38Speaker 1: that something they need to address Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Yeah, they really need. Look that they could go get.
- 10:44Speaker 2: There are some good veteran safeties out there. They can
- 10:46Speaker 2: hold down the four for one or two years if
- 10:48Speaker 2: they can't get that guy in this draft. But Drew
- 10:51Speaker 2: Vicoba will start at one position and then they don't
- 10:54Speaker 2: know who's going to start the other one. That's completely
- 10:55Speaker 2: wide open market. They don't want our Mark Steps to start.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Michael Carter might, by the way, if they don't get
- 11:00Speaker 2: the guy. As we report at the time they were
- 11:03Speaker 2: going to cross training, which they did. It was a
- 11:05Speaker 2: safety at Duke and just really looking at the situation
- 11:13Speaker 2: they could. I don't know that a trade will happen,
- 11:15Speaker 2: but they've identified this position that they have to add. JT.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Gray by the way, for people wanting only a special
- 11:20Speaker 2: teams player that he doesn't factor in the safety.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Maybe not the last spot, but last spot that they
- 11:28Speaker 1: probably need to find is a corner. Maybe not for
- 11:32Speaker 1: this year with Woolen here, but probably for the future.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, this is one they definitely do not need
- 11:41Speaker 2: to do anything. But again, it's about the future. Wold's
- 11:44Speaker 2: on a one year deal worth twelve million. Twelve million.
- 11:47Speaker 2: They guaranteed a ton of money in that contract. He's
- 11:50Speaker 2: starting the season, but after that they don't know. Now,
- 11:54Speaker 2: we'll see if this turns out to be true. But
- 11:55Speaker 2: my gut feeling is Howie will think because he's always
- 11:59Speaker 2: like and he was so good as a rookie in
- 12:02Speaker 2: the SEC's regress. Since then, is that paying them twelve million?
- 12:09Speaker 2: I always had a one year deal, but you feel
- 12:10Speaker 2: like you he can have you can have you can
- 12:13Speaker 2: have a relationship with him past this season. It's why
- 12:16Speaker 2: they gave up a third on Jalen Phillips. It wasn't
- 12:18Speaker 2: like they didn't try to resign him. They tried hard,
- 12:20Speaker 2: just didn't work out. We'll see if I'm right about this. Now,
- 12:23Speaker 2: remember with Cooper Degene before we get out of here.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Dejene has never been a full time corner at this level.
- 12:30Speaker 2: He was in college. In fact, that's how they drafted
- 12:33Speaker 2: to be a corner circumstances due to his injuries. They
- 12:37Speaker 2: started at nickel. No one knew he'd be elite like
- 12:39Speaker 2: he's been, and Vic Fango has been reluctant to move
- 12:42Speaker 2: the full time at corner, so this draft will give
- 12:44Speaker 2: us a lot of banswers of what they think about
- 12:46Speaker 2: the cornerback position for the future.
- 12:47Speaker 1: All Right, there you go, a little blueprint for the
- 12:49Speaker 1: Eagles draft, and of course Adam will recap round one
- 12:53Speaker 1: and get you ready for gown two on Friday, after
- 12:57Speaker 1: the Eagles make their pick and possibly some trades. We'll
- 12:59Speaker 1: see what ends up happening here on Football at four.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Adam always appreciate him. Man, you all right, there's Adam
- 13:05Speaker 1: kaplan for today's football at four on the Sports Bast
- 13:08Speaker 1: Live ninety seven three ESPN.
