- 2:33Speaker 2: Being a bartender like yourself? I haven't had the time.
- 2:36Speaker 4: I don't mind admitting off and on. I've given me
- 2:39Speaker 4: a little thought. It baffles me. You want to olive
- 2:42Speaker 4: our onion? Any drinking olive? If it's all right with you?
- 2:46Speaker 4: Hi are smart? Olive's got more vitamins. A fellow was
- 2:50Speaker 4: in here a couple three hours ago. Nobody says to me. No,
- 2:54Speaker 4: he says, we're here today and gone tomorrow.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Well, put how about my drink? Or take the blonde
- 3:02Speaker 2: sitting over there? M all right, I'll take the blonde.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Know who she is. Maddie North used to be in
- 3:08Speaker 2: musical comedy. I can see why, even at this distance
- 3:12Speaker 2: she sings too. I wouldn't have thought it necessary. However,
- 3:16Speaker 2: about my drink? So what happens?
- 3:18Speaker 4: She makes big door, Then she gets palsy with Joe Maxon,
- 3:22Speaker 4: at that time a small punk. But with her door,
- 3:25Speaker 4: he works himself up where he's now owning the biggest
- 3:27Speaker 4: gambling joint this.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Side of the ki Faver Committee. So now he is
- 3:30Speaker 2: a big shot. And what happens He won't even buy
- 3:33Speaker 2: her a drink? Right, want to know her anymore? Don't
- 3:37Speaker 2: even give her a door back? You know something? Yes,
- 3:40Speaker 2: I'm thirsty. She could kill him as easy as swatting
- 3:42Speaker 2: a fly. Dugan, whom do you have to know around
- 3:46Speaker 2: here to get a drink? Huh? Oh? Always getting mister
- 3:51Speaker 2: templer here? Yeah? See, I bid it. Get around to
- 3:55Speaker 2: the other customers. I can't stand here talking to you
- 3:57Speaker 2: all night, and I could be persuaded to put us
- 4:00Speaker 2: I'm all better on that, are you? Oh?
- 4:03Speaker 5: Hello, my name is Maddy North. I know who you are,
- 4:07Speaker 5: do you? Simon Temperate?
- 4:11Speaker 2: Hello? Simon?
- 4:12Speaker 5: Hello, you're the saint. That's why I came over.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 4:19Speaker 6: You think I'm just a teamy weave me bit drunk,
- 4:22Speaker 6: don't you?
- 4:23Speaker 2: Well?
- 4:25Speaker 5: You're right I am. I Oh I'm gonna fall. I
- 4:33Speaker 5: get these disease special when I look here?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Sit down?
- 4:36Speaker 5: No, no, just let me hold on to you for
- 4:38Speaker 5: a minute.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Maddie. When was the last time you ate some food?
- 4:44Speaker 5: What's that?
- 4:44Speaker 2: I thought? So? You better let me order yourself?
- 4:47Speaker 5: No, No, I feel all right now?
- 4:49Speaker 2: You sure.
- 4:51Speaker 5: I can stand all.
- 4:53Speaker 2: By myself, Maddie.
- 4:55Speaker 5: I'm sure. Glad I ran into you Simon a real pleasure.
- 4:59Speaker 2: To me to let's talk some more about them.
- 5:02Speaker 6: No, I gotta be going, I gotta take good bye seven?
- 5:07Speaker 2: Who won the rattle? Something strange about the whole thing?
- 5:11Speaker 2: You mean? She don't rastle fair a busy spell? She
- 5:14Speaker 2: got over it in a few seconds, walked out of
- 5:16Speaker 2: here with no difficulty, perfectly straight. She must have had
- 5:19Speaker 2: some reasons, but.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Only two reasons Dame's got for leaning against the guy.
- 5:24Speaker 4: The other one is they want to pick his pockets. Tricky,
- 5:28Speaker 4: I'll be That's what she did in a way. But
- 5:32Speaker 4: what she still wasn't money. It was my revolver.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Taxi, taxi? Are you gonna do this? What her away
- 5:48Speaker 2: was the tablet? Whither? Hey? How did you know? My name?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Lluis told me. He also told me I should take
- 5:55Speaker 2: good carriers should you ever step a foot into my can. Well,
- 5:59Speaker 2: my name is Eddie, and where would you like to
- 6:01Speaker 2: with it? And I'm very glad to know you're Eddie.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Do you know where Joe Maxon's establishment is? Yeah? Sure, good?
- 6:09Speaker 2: Only enough fuss cycles. You know what I referred to
- 6:12Speaker 2: as an establishment, This is better known as a joint.
- 6:16Speaker 2: You're gonna maybe gimble a bit and not exactly. A
- 6:19Speaker 2: blonde just leaned against me, Eddie. Oh, that's bad. And
- 6:23Speaker 2: she did it in order to steal my gun. That's bad. Yeah,
- 6:26Speaker 2: but I don't explain why you're going to Maxim's. You
- 6:29Speaker 2: think that maybe she swamped the gun to give it
- 6:31Speaker 2: to him. I'm afraid it wasn't a gun she thought
- 6:34Speaker 2: of giving to him, only the bullets in it. Looking
- 6:52Speaker 2: for someone? You're not Joe Maxon? Are you no? My
- 6:55Speaker 2: name is Brent is Maddie North? Here, Maddie? Who wants
- 7:01Speaker 2: to know? I do? That leaves me pretty much? Word
- 7:04Speaker 2: farm me. My name is Simon Templar. The Saint room
- 7:08Speaker 2: is du spread them. I have no idea where missus
- 7:11Speaker 2: North is. Well, I do. The idea is that she's here.
- 7:14Speaker 2: What do you want it for? I tell her that
- 7:17Speaker 2: is she here? Well, she was here a little while ago,
- 7:21Speaker 2: at the moment, at the moment, I don't see her.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Where is Maxim? I am not acquainted with your schedule.
- 7:26Speaker 2: You're giving a very good imitation of an idiot. If
- 7:28Speaker 2: it is an imitation, where is Maxim's offer? Mister Templar,
- 7:31Speaker 2: I've got a job. It is to keep the customers
- 7:34Speaker 2: happy and mister Maxon undisturbed. If Maddie North gets to him,
- 7:37Speaker 2: Maxim is going to be more than disturbed. What are
- 7:39Speaker 2: you talking about? She stole my gun in a bar
- 7:42Speaker 2: a little while ago. I believe her intentions were murderous.
- 7:46Speaker 2: They concerned mister Maxon. Good heavens are come along. If
- 7:51Speaker 2: I'd only known that you let her visit Maxim. Well
- 7:54Speaker 2: you may not know this, but she and mister Maximon
- 7:56Speaker 2: at one time. You I know what they used to be.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And there's been a few chain however, perhaps, but everyone
- 8:02Speaker 2: around here likes Maddie and she must have been figuring
- 8:04Speaker 2: on that through here. I well, we were all hoping
- 8:12Speaker 2: perhaps she and mister Maxim would get together again. The
- 8:15Speaker 2: office is right down this way. I'd better not. Oh,
- 8:20Speaker 2: someone else decided to knock first. It's locked. Have you
- 8:25Speaker 2: got a key? Get it out quick? All right? Those
- 8:28Speaker 2: were shut of her mind being brilliant here. Thanks. Max
- 8:37Speaker 2: fell forward unto his desk. Window behind him is open.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Short dropped to an alley. We're a little late. Bullets
- 8:50Speaker 2: went in under his left shoulder. Blame mister Templan is dead.
- 8:54Speaker 2: If that's what's bothering you, No, you see that man? Well,
- 8:59Speaker 2: he's rest in a dark suit and his hair is
- 9:02Speaker 2: the same color. But that isn't Maxim phoned the police.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Quiet at the boys out front and disposed of the customers.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I've been through the little stranger's pockets brand find anything?
- 9:30Speaker 2: A couple of ten dollars chips? Have you ever been
- 9:33Speaker 2: to Allentown, Pennsylvania? Brand? No, this man asked, how do
- 9:37Speaker 2: you know that? Brilliance on my part? I looked at
- 9:39Speaker 2: the label in his suit came from hes Brother's department
- 9:42Speaker 2: store in ALLENTOWNE. Now you'd be just as brilliant and
- 9:44Speaker 2: tell me his name? Uh, Kerrie, he's well a business competitor,
- 9:51Speaker 2: rings a bell, don't stop there brand. He and a
- 9:54Speaker 2: man named Harris run of rival establishment, the Red Wheel
- 9:57Speaker 2: down the street. Interesting, they've been doing well. No. As
- 10:00Speaker 2: a matter of fact, mister Harris was here yesterday to
- 10:02Speaker 2: see mister Maxon. His reason. He accused mister Maxon of
- 10:08Speaker 2: unfair practices. Designer among the in a way. Interesting. That
- 10:13Speaker 2: doesn't explain why Carrie died in Maxon's office. Now he's
- 10:17Speaker 2: built something like mister Maxon. He's wearing a similar suit
- 10:20Speaker 2: and from the alley he could easily have been mistaken
- 10:23Speaker 2: for mister Maxon too. I'll let the police worry about that.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Are you leaving? Yes, I've got to acclaim some property, property,
- 10:31Speaker 2: my stolen revolver from Maddie North. Yes, a lady who
- 10:35Speaker 2: may have made a mistake. On the other hand, she
- 10:37Speaker 2: may not have had a chance to meaning what this
- 10:41Speaker 2: is Maxon's office, that's Maxon's desk. But where is Maxon? Hey,
- 10:55Speaker 2: mister Templer, just we was pulling away from the Maxims joint.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Now the cops was pulling in, and they always do
- 11:01Speaker 2: after a murder Eddie. Oh, then Mattion ain't no longer woulds?
- 11:06Speaker 2: If you mean present? The answer is yes, if you
- 11:08Speaker 2: mean Dad, I don't know. Oh this you think helps me?
- 11:12Speaker 2: A man named Carrie was shot in Maxon's office, appadly
- 11:16Speaker 2: by mistake, not necessarily however, Well that's okay by me.
- 11:20Speaker 2: If it was a mistake, then his murderer could have
- 11:22Speaker 2: been Maddy North or possibly Paris, a business rival. Oh yeah,
- 11:27Speaker 2: this is very clear to me. If, however, Carrie was
- 11:30Speaker 2: shot as Carrie, h I beg your pardon. Well, I
- 11:33Speaker 2: just thought this would be a nice place to say,
- 11:35Speaker 2: uh huh. So if Carry was shot as Carrie. The
- 11:39Speaker 2: killer then might have been Maxim. Yes, so whichever will
- 11:42Speaker 2: you look at it altogether? There are three suspects? Huh, yes,
- 11:47Speaker 2: well that's a nice number. So who is it this
- 11:50Speaker 2: address that I'm taking it to? A blonde, A leaning blonde? Yes, Hey,
- 11:55Speaker 2: you want to find out if she's still leading, that's right?
- 11:58Speaker 2: Or if she fell. Hello, Maddie Mackey.
- 12:17Speaker 5: I'm on my way to bed.
- 12:19Speaker 2: You usually go to bed with your clothes on.
- 12:21Speaker 5: I didn't have a chance to get them off if.
- 12:24Speaker 2: You came here directly from the bar.
- 12:27Speaker 6: I went for a walk, A long walk, all right,
- 12:32Speaker 6: A long walk the way did?
- 12:34Speaker 2: The revolver didn't bother you?
- 12:36Speaker 5: What? What revolver?
- 12:38Speaker 2: The one you borrowed from me?
- 12:40Speaker 5: I didn't.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I'd like it back.
- 12:43Speaker 5: I don't have it.
- 12:44Speaker 2: You led it to a friend.
- 12:45Speaker 1: No.
- 12:45Speaker 5: I I realized I'd been crazy. After I left the bar,
- 12:49Speaker 5: I threw it.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Away before or after. Two shots were fired from it?
- 12:53Speaker 5: Two shots.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Where does that door lead to that?
- 12:57Speaker 5: It's the back door of the.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Apartment, funny, placed right opposite the front door. The architect
- 13:02Speaker 2: had no imagination. What's interesting about that door, Maddie.
- 13:07Speaker 5: Nothing?
- 13:07Speaker 2: You've been watching it ever since I came in. I
- 13:11Speaker 2: think I'll have a look at.
- 13:13Speaker 5: It, Simon.
- 13:14Speaker 2: That door. I'm mad about back doors. M it's dark.
- 13:20Speaker 2: You ought to speak to the landlord about.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Simon.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Simon, all right, all right, I'm ready for my music
- 13:42Speaker 2: lessons on the harp? Or is this the other place?
- 13:47Speaker 2: Let me all right, Maddie, you're a female Benedict Arnold.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I was happy on the floor. Hand me my other.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Head, Simon, Please, are you all right?
- 14:01Speaker 2: My head may not be bloody, but it certainly got bowed.
- 14:04Speaker 5: I was so worried what that.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Door turning out to be a door leading to your bedroom,
- 14:09Speaker 2: not the back door at all? He who hit me?
- 14:13Speaker 6: There was a suitcase over the door shelf.
- 14:16Speaker 5: It fell when you opened the door.
- 14:17Speaker 2: A suitcase with lungs. Maddie. It did breathing just before
- 14:22Speaker 2: it hit me. No, shall we go look for that shelf.
- 14:25Speaker 2: They don't usually build them over doors. It was in
- 14:28Speaker 2: that room, Maddy.
- 14:29Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Could it have been Joe.
- 14:31Speaker 6: Maxim You think I'd let him hide here, but I
- 14:34Speaker 6: hate him.
- 14:35Speaker 2: That's possibly true. You did steal my gun to kill
- 14:39Speaker 2: him with, didn't you? Maybe I did, but then you
- 14:41Speaker 2: changed your mind. Or perhaps you didn't change your mind.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Perhaps you did kill him.
- 14:45Speaker 5: He's not dead, of course he isn't.
- 14:47Speaker 2: But how did you know that? I knew it? Because
- 14:49Speaker 2: he's just been here, Maddie. Did you ever wear glasses?
- 14:53Speaker 5: No, my eyesight's perfect.
- 14:54Speaker 2: W No. A man named Carrie Carrie? I think so
- 14:58Speaker 2: my tense was wrong. I should have said you a
- 15:01Speaker 2: man named Carry. He's dead. Somebody shot him earlier this
- 15:04Speaker 2: evening in Maxim's office, either because the killer thought he
- 15:07Speaker 2: was Joe, maximum because he didn't.
- 15:09Speaker 5: You're making up some kind of a joke.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Of course, be sure to tell it to Joe the
- 15:13Speaker 2: next time you see him. He may die laughing.
- 15:25Speaker 5: Hello, Maddie, Joe, Oh, Joe Temple. Yeah, did he tumble?
- 15:29Speaker 5: He guessed it was.
- 15:31Speaker 2: You, Just so long as he isn't sure, Maddie, I
- 15:35Speaker 2: need some dough. I got to stay hold up for
- 15:38Speaker 2: a while.
- 15:38Speaker 5: Why.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Well, this business of Carrie getting bumped off in my office,
- 15:42Speaker 2: the cups a level. I think maybe I bumped him off.
- 15:45Speaker 5: He was sorry about the way you did business, wasn't
- 15:47Speaker 5: he Joe?
- 15:48Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 15:49Speaker 5: But did you kill him?
- 15:50Speaker 2: Joe? Of course I did.
- 15:52Speaker 5: Until tonight you didn't even want to see me. But
- 15:54Speaker 5: when you get in a jam.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Oh it's not that, baby, I was busy. I was
- 15:58Speaker 2: going to look you.
- 15:59Speaker 6: Up the first Sure, I wish I was dope enough
- 16:04Speaker 6: to believe you. But even not believing you, I've got
- 16:07Speaker 6: a few dollars, how can I get them to you?
- 16:10Speaker 2: I gotta keep moving around. I'm done at part grown up. Look, baby,
- 16:15Speaker 2: make it up on the bridge, the pedestrian walk.
- 16:18Speaker 5: Kind of hour, and I'll be all right.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I'll be bad Joe, find baby fine, because I love you.
- 16:28Speaker 5: Because I love you.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Took it off a long time to find out about
- 16:41Speaker 2: that lean and blonde, mister Templar, it did so did
- 16:44Speaker 2: you find that? Uh huh, I fell, mister Templar. No,
- 16:48Speaker 2: it is will It could happen to anybody. It didn't
- 16:51Speaker 2: to me. So some days you can't make a nicle.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Well that's why you're going to the Red Wheel. I
- 16:57Speaker 2: think I should meet mister Harris. He may have some information.
- 17:00Speaker 2: He has also got crooked roulette wheels, and I won't play.
- 17:04Speaker 2: You're playing, mister Templar. From what I hear of mister Harris,
- 17:07Speaker 2: you could easily be playing with death. It's open, mister Harris.
- 17:24Speaker 2: I'm Harris. You'd be templar. Your boys downstairs were very
- 17:29Speaker 2: thorough about searching me. They're always very thorough. They've got
- 17:32Speaker 2: their orders. I notice you've got the window shades drawn.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Nervous playing it safe a habit of mine. Your partner
- 17:41Speaker 2: felt the same way. No, Carrie was always on the
- 17:44Speaker 2: reckless side, he said, was the cops have been here, Templar.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Terrible tragedy, fine upstanding citizen like Carrie dead. I could
- 17:54Speaker 2: spare your sarcasm. I'm not sure I couldn't. But do
- 17:57Speaker 2: you think killed him? Harris? The cops didn't tell me
- 18:00Speaker 2: you'd know. How much doubt do you think there is
- 18:03Speaker 2: about Maxon? Is the killer? A good deal of doubt
- 18:07Speaker 2: at the moment. You must have reasons I have. Maxen's
- 18:10Speaker 2: club was doing very well yours and Carry's isn't. Why
- 18:13Speaker 2: should maxim bother killing an unsuccessful competitor. Kerry didn't care
- 18:17Speaker 2: for the way Maxon had been steering customers away from us. Carry,
- 18:20Speaker 2: as I said, was on the reckless side. He probably
- 18:23Speaker 2: told Maxon how he felt, and Maxon, being a sensitive plan,
- 18:27Speaker 2: promptly killed Carry. It's a possibility. Don't you think I'm
- 18:31Speaker 2: unarmed in your club? I don't think I can afford
- 18:34Speaker 2: to do much thinking. It's on the house, thank you.
- 18:38Speaker 2: But still, Harris, how did Carry and you get along?
- 18:42Speaker 2: We got along fine? But you knew that's what I'd answer,
- 18:46Speaker 2: whatever the truth was. What is the truth? There's more
- 18:49Speaker 2: than one way of answering anything, Templar, more than one way, Harris.
- 18:53Speaker 2: You're quite right, I am, which means that I'm in
- 18:56Speaker 2: a hurry about what that there's more than one way.
- 18:59Speaker 2: I don't got it? Perhaps not, but I suspect I've
- 19:02Speaker 2: just discovered how Carrie got it? Was there, Simon Templary,
- 19:18Speaker 2: Brian place all closed on? What do you think the
- 19:22Speaker 2: cops have been after us for a long time? Carrie
- 19:24Speaker 2: shooting gives them their chance. It's a pity. What are
- 19:27Speaker 2: you doing all alone here at the bar, repressing your tears,
- 19:30Speaker 2: taking some nourishment. The vitamins can wait, Brent? How did
- 19:35Speaker 2: Carry get into Maxim's office? He must have sneaked in
- 19:39Speaker 2: with you watching? Well, I guess he didn't sneak in
- 19:41Speaker 2: through the front door. He must have got in through
- 19:43Speaker 2: that back window, the one that was open. Let's go
- 19:46Speaker 2: take a look at it. Huh. All right? The last
- 19:55Speaker 2: time I was here, all I had time to do
- 19:57Speaker 2: is take a quick look at that window. There's something
- 20:00Speaker 2: I've got to check. I'm going. I did mention there
- 20:07Speaker 2: was a drop to the alley from the window. Ye
- 20:10Speaker 2: still is What does that mean? The theory has been
- 20:14Speaker 2: for some time that maybe Carry was shot by mistake. Yes,
- 20:17Speaker 2: it has been. That would mean he'd have to have
- 20:20Speaker 2: been shot through that window. What's wrong with that? There's
- 20:23Speaker 2: a drop to the alley brand, somebody standing outside wouldn't
- 20:26Speaker 2: be able to see into the room or fire a
- 20:29Speaker 2: gun at someone in the room. I have maybe he
- 20:32Speaker 2: stood on something. We got into the room seconds after
- 20:35Speaker 2: the shooting. It wouldn't have been time to remove anything
- 20:38Speaker 2: from under the window. There wasn't anything under the window
- 20:41Speaker 2: brand Why. I don't know what to say, Brent. Carry
- 20:44Speaker 2: didn't sneak into the office. You let him in? No,
- 20:46Speaker 2: there must be more than one way into this room
- 20:50Speaker 2: besides the front door. Well, that door leads to what
- 20:58Speaker 2: bathroom door? Here? It leads to the hallway too. Very nice, Brent,
- 21:09Speaker 2: what's very nice? Carry wasn't shot by mistake. Whoever shot
- 21:13Speaker 2: him intended to kill him. You let Carry in? Perhaps deliberately,
- 21:16Speaker 2: I didn't would make you an accessory. I didn't have
- 21:20Speaker 2: any motive Maxon might have had. Maxon didn't have opportunity.
- 21:24Speaker 2: He didn't know carry was in his office. I'm sure
- 21:26Speaker 2: he did it. I mean, I mean Maxon knew Kerry
- 21:28Speaker 2: was waiting for him. How did he know, Brent, I
- 21:31Speaker 2: don't have to answer that. It might be the only
- 21:33Speaker 2: thing to keep you out of the chair. Well maybe
- 21:36Speaker 2: I told him. You're not sure you said carry up
- 21:40Speaker 2: for Maxim. That's not what I said. You didn't have to.
- 21:43Speaker 2: I think you'd better stay in town, Brent. The police
- 21:47Speaker 2: get annoyed when they have to travel for their witnesses.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Sometimes they get so annoyed they don't even let them
- 21:54Speaker 2: turn state's evidence. Coupless time you come back even quicker
- 22:07Speaker 2: from the blonde. But a good reason, Eddie, she's not home.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Oh that ain't good. Raised than that, Eddie, it's bad. Well,
- 22:13Speaker 2: it ain't such a cold night. I gotta find her.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Dooring man told me she took a cab, but he
- 22:19Speaker 2: noticed the kind of cab that famous yours. Well, in
- 22:22Speaker 2: that case, we are in. You got an idea, he yeah,
- 22:26Speaker 2: all of us camp. He's up in this part of town.
- 22:28Speaker 2: You see, we hang out at Sammy's and we ain't
- 22:30Speaker 2: got a fair Sammy. Yeah, that's the station a couple
- 22:32Speaker 2: of blocks over toward the river. If the campy that
- 22:35Speaker 2: dropped the block any places around, I will line all, hey, couple,
- 22:41Speaker 2: think of it's about time? Did I learn the work anyway? Eddie?
- 22:54Speaker 2: You are sure your information is correcked? Yeah? The blanc
- 22:57Speaker 2: took a camp to the New York end of the
- 22:58Speaker 2: Brooklyn Bridge. She got out, she said, walking across the bridge.
- 23:01Speaker 2: That's what you tell me before. But the truth the
- 23:03Speaker 2: canby happens to be my brother in law, and he
- 23:05Speaker 2: always tells the truth. Sure, except to my sister. But
- 23:08Speaker 2: why would Maddy be walking on the bridge at this
- 23:10Speaker 2: hour of the night. Who can tell about blonde? Of
- 23:13Speaker 2: course she might be meeting someone there, or she may
- 23:17Speaker 2: decide to jump. I don't hear anything. I didn't see you,
- 23:38Speaker 2: not my habit of standing on the lamp posts.
- 23:41Speaker 5: It's so dark up here on the bridge, dark and co.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I never mind the emotions. You got the dough?
- 23:47Speaker 6: Yeah here, Joe, thanks baby, Thanks baby? Is that all
- 23:55Speaker 6: you've got to say to me? Joe?
- 23:57Speaker 2: Somebody coming, Turn you back to the wool. We'll lean
- 24:00Speaker 2: over the.
- 24:01Speaker 5: Rail whoever it was is gone.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Joe, Maddy, Mattie, I think you're swell. Sure, maybe I
- 24:16Speaker 2: didn't always act like I appreciated you. But once I
- 24:20Speaker 2: get out of this message to see me again, Oh no,
- 24:24Speaker 2: don't be like that, baby. I mean everything I say.
- 24:28Speaker 6: I better scram Would it be asking too much if
- 24:31Speaker 6: I wanted you to kiss me?
- 24:33Speaker 2: No? Thanks, I gotta hurry. So long, Maddie, I'll be saying,
- 24:49Speaker 2: Maddie worth Maxim, I don't know. I haven't got time
- 24:55Speaker 2: to be cute. I came from the New York end
- 24:58Speaker 2: of the bridge. Maxm didn't pass me, must have gone
- 25:00Speaker 2: on to Brooklyn.
- 25:01Speaker 5: Simon. What do you want with him?
- 25:02Speaker 2: You may not believe it, but I'm trying to save
- 25:04Speaker 2: his life. Did anyone pass you in Maxim on the bridge?
- 25:07Speaker 5: Yes? Someone. We had our backs turned so we didn't
- 25:10Speaker 5: see who.
- 25:11Speaker 2: It's who I think it is. Yes, yes, it's Maxim.
- 25:29Speaker 2: He's dead. Whoever killed him is heading for the Brooklyn
- 25:32Speaker 2: and end of the bridge. It's got to start. Perhaps
- 25:35Speaker 2: too much of a starting list.
- 25:37Speaker 5: Where are you going?
- 25:38Speaker 2: I'm climbing down to the roadway. Perhaps I can get
- 25:41Speaker 2: a hitch, but I don't understand it. Mister, don't try.
- 25:55Speaker 2: I haven't enough time to explain for coming to the
- 25:57Speaker 2: end of the bridge. Slow down here, But I don't
- 26:00Speaker 2: want to get any trouble about the thanks wants it
- 26:03Speaker 2: all about murder? Oh dear, goodbye, good evening, mister Harris.
- 26:14Speaker 2: In hurry, mister Harris, I was taking a walk on
- 26:17Speaker 2: the bridge, taking a run. You mean well, I don't
- 26:20Speaker 2: mind admitting I'm out of condition, That's sadly true, but
- 26:23Speaker 2: I really must go along. I haven't a point where
- 26:25Speaker 2: you have. It must still be warm, thank you, it
- 26:37Speaker 2: is still warm. Why, yes, mister Harris, I'll get you
- 26:41Speaker 2: for this. I can understand why you're so upset. Mister Harris.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Have made you late for your appointment, haven't I. I
- 26:46Speaker 2: don't worry even if you are late. The executioner always waits.
- 27:08Speaker 2: All the things that happen on bridges, And mister Templar,
- 27:13Speaker 2: we have not deposited the blonde who wasn't only not leaning,
- 27:16Speaker 2: she was collapsing? Who and Maddie And we have also
- 27:20Speaker 2: deposited a mister Harris with some policemen, and they were
- 27:23Speaker 2: very happy to collect them. What do I know what happened?
- 27:26Speaker 2: We know he murdered Joe Maxon up on the bridge. Yeah,
- 27:30Speaker 2: you know, all right, but then all you did was
- 27:32Speaker 2: just to hit you right on a car and then
- 27:33Speaker 2: you beat him to the other end of the bridge
- 27:35Speaker 2: and you grab them. Now, mister templar, I will admit
- 27:37Speaker 2: that this was a public spirited action maybe, but honest,
- 27:41Speaker 2: it ain't of you. What do you mean, no clues? Oh,
- 27:45Speaker 2: by Daddie, I already knew it would be Harry. Uh huh.
- 27:48Speaker 2: All right, well now I'm beginning to feel better, So
- 27:51Speaker 2: tell me how did you already know there would be
- 27:53Speaker 2: Harris who could have killed Gary? One theory was that
- 27:56Speaker 2: Gary had been shot by a mistake for a Maxim
- 27:59Speaker 2: that might have involved Maddie, but I eliminated that possibility
- 28:03Speaker 2: on my second trip to Maxon's plate. Oh yeah, she
- 28:07Speaker 2: did the business about the alley. Huh yeah. Yeah. Another
- 28:10Speaker 2: possibility was that Maxon and Carry quarreled and that Maxim
- 28:14Speaker 2: shot Carry. Yeah. This sounds reasonable except for the fact that,
- 28:18Speaker 2: as I mentioned at the time, Carrie was shot under
- 28:21Speaker 2: the left shoulder blade, meaning he was shot in the back.
- 28:25Speaker 2: He wouldn't have turned his back on an open enemy
- 28:27Speaker 2: like Maxim. Oh h yeah. This also sounds reasonable, so
- 28:32Speaker 2: that left Harris. By killing his own partner and framing Maxon,
- 28:37Speaker 2: Harris hoped to eliminate a business rival, thereby making his
- 28:41Speaker 2: own gambling club more valuable and at the same time
- 28:44Speaker 2: gaining sole ownership of it. Ah yeah, this guy was
- 28:48Speaker 2: trying to kill two boyds with one stone. Ah Hi, Yeah,
- 28:52Speaker 2: you're right, Eddie. Why I should drive your home Nowmice
- 28:55Speaker 2: the Templin. I guess so, Eddie is not a blonde insight,
- 29:00Speaker 2: not even a leaning one.

- 31:52Speaker 7: the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio with Adam Graham.
- 31:55Speaker 7: And now let's get back into the show.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, I love Sheldon Leonard, but he's not
- 32:07Speaker 1: a good substitute for Larry Doopkin as Louie. There were
- 32:13Speaker 1: some people, I think, during the golden age of radio
- 32:16Speaker 1: who thought you could replace one regular character with any
- 32:19Speaker 1: other regular character. In fact, sometimes the stars of radio programs,
- 32:25Speaker 1: the main stars, are changed without any notice or thought
- 32:29Speaker 1: that a change is being made. It's just all of
- 32:32Speaker 1: a sudden, here's your new star, folks. And I think
- 32:34Speaker 1: that's definitely the case with Louie. In this case, the
- 32:39Speaker 1: script really sounds like it was written for Louie. They
- 32:42Speaker 1: couldn't get him at the last minute, and so they
- 32:44Speaker 1: substituted in Eddie. Louie is of course very well beloved,
- 32:48Speaker 1: and that does bring me to a survey we ran
- 32:52Speaker 1: over on a Great Detectives dot net on our Facebook
- 32:56Speaker 1: page at Facebook dot com Slash Radio Detectives, asking people
- 33:01Speaker 1: who their favorite sidekick or partner was on the current
- 33:06Speaker 1: shows we had, and Louie actually won running away with
- 33:10Speaker 1: sixty three percent for Louie, twenty six percent for Ben
- 33:16Speaker 1: Romero on Dragnet, and eleven percent like Patsy Bowen, Nicky
- 33:22Speaker 1: Porter from Ellery Queen, Walda McGlenn and Scubby Wilson were
- 33:27Speaker 1: listed but didn't receive any votes. So you know what
- 33:31Speaker 1: we want more Lowie, and hopefully we'll get it all right, Well,
- 33:35Speaker 1: that will do it for today. Join us back here
- 33:37Speaker 1: tomorrow for the adventures of Ellery Queen, and next Monday
- 33:40Speaker 1: another adventure with Simon Templar as the Saint. In the meantime.
