- 0:00This is Retro Sports Radio. Visit RetroSeasons.com for more sports history.
- 0:07The New York Mets faced the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field for a Thursday night game on June 3rd, 1965.
- 0:14The Mets were led by Casey Stengel, whose only real goal in 1965 was trying to avoid losing more than 109 games for the fourth consecutive year.
- 0:22From 1961 to 1964, the Pirates had only one season over 500.
- 0:27And after the conclusion of the 1964 campaign, longtime manager Danny Murtaugh stepped down as skipper and moved up to the Pirate front office.
- 0:34The Pirate hired Harry Walker to manage the 1965 season after he led the Jacksonville Suns to the 1964 International League pennant.
- 0:41Pittsburgh started off this season slow, however, entering the game near the bottom of the National League with a 21-24 record.
- 0:48This recording begins with a 27-minute special radio broadcast of the launching of the Gemini Titan IV space mission, which included the first American spacewalk.
- 0:57This historic moment occurred shortly before the game began, and after this special report is over,
- 1:02the recording returns to the pregame broadcast of the Mets and Pirates game featuring announcers Ralph Keiner, Bob Murphy, and Lindsay Nelson.
- 1:10...is ready to fly, and the operations director at Mission Control in Houston reports the worldwide tracking network is ready.
- 1:19Now, of all of these people, thousands of them and the hundreds of pieces of equipment needed for the flight report, they are ready to go.
- 1:26Flight director Chris Craft is notified that the Mission Control center in Houston, that the Gemini Titan IV is now ready and is committed for launch.
- 1:35So we're coming up at five and a half minutes before liftoff. From this point on, the count is controlled automatically.
- 1:42This is what is called the terminal portion of the count, where an automatic sequencer takes over to make the final checks electronically.
- 1:48If anything in the maze of wires, tubes, and pipes that make up this 11-story tall Gemini Titan rocket poses a threat to the safety of the flight, the count will be stopped automatically.
- 1:58Otherwise, in a few moments, astronauts Mac Bidditt and White should be airborne.
- 2:03We will be getting another report momentarily on the status of the flight. At this point, everything seems to be proceeding smoothly.
- 2:10And if it is, if it continues so, the launch should take place in about five minutes.
- 2:16Control will be from launch time on at the Mission Control center, a spanking new room in a new three-story building costing something over $100 million at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston.
- 2:28And we expect to get a report within just a few seconds on the latest status in these final moments of the countdown on the launch of Gemini 4.
- 2:39Paul Hady in Houston.
- 2:42This is Gemini Control Houston in the count. T minus five minutes in county.
- 2:48At T minus seven minutes, we completed a spacecraft test conductor status check and all elements were green and go.
- 2:55At the conclusion of that status check, spacecraft test conductor Frank Whittick of the Kennedy Space Center signed off too.
- 3:03We should make that a short message of anything we said.
- 3:07Okay, Jim, have a good flight.
- 3:10In the last minute, the launch vehicle test conductor Frank Kerry of the Martin Company is conducting his status check.
- 3:17The bird looks just as green as the spacecraft.
- 3:21We have four minutes and 30 seconds and proceeding.
- 3:25This is Gemini Control Houston.
- 3:29We're in the final minutes of the countdown as the Gemini Titan Rockets guidance system is given its commands to fly the astronauts to a point 100 miles above the island of Bermuda,
- 3:39where McNivet in white will begin the longest flight yet attempted by the U.S.
- 3:44If all goes well, they will spend almost 100 hours in their conchaired seats to come within less than one day of the longest manned space flight,
- 3:52that of Russian cosmonaut Valery Bochitsky, made two years ago this month.
- 3:57The Russian colonel came within one hour of spending five days in orbit.
- 4:01Medical men are calling this flight the most critical yet by the U.S.
- 4:05They will constantly monitor the pilots of Gemini 4 as they orbit the Earth.
- 4:09They are gravely concerned about man's ability to survive and sustain weightlessness.
- 4:13There's evidence that without the effect of gravity, man's heart and nerve systems and his bone structure will decay according to the length of time he spends in space.
- 4:22We're counting at T-minus three minutes now on the flight of Gemini Titan 4.
- 4:28This will be the beginning of the longest flight yet for the U.S., the longest yet attempted.
- 4:33If all goes well, it will triple the time.
- 4:36We're getting ready now for reports from the Mission Control Center here on Cape Kennedy.
- 4:41This is the one that will be monitoring the flight during the first few minutes,
- 4:45and we have Information Officer Jack King standing by to give us a last few status reports here on the situation on the pad.
- 4:54Now to Jack King at Mission Control.
- 4:57This is Gemini Launch Control at the Cape.
- 5:00We are now at two minutes and 41 seconds in time.
- 5:03At this final phase of the top down, we're just finishing up our final guidance set for the launch vehicle.
- 5:10All systems are good, both in the Gemini four-space craft with pilots Jim McGibbet and Ed White, and with the launch vehicle on the pad.
- 5:18This is Gemini Launch Control at two minutes and 20 seconds and counting.
- 5:24Here's the latest statement from John W. King, Jack King, and the Mission Control Center here as the excitement begins to mount
- 5:31for the second manned launch in the Gemini program.
- 5:34The astronauts are James McDivitt and Edward White,
- 5:37and it promises to be the most dramatic flight in the history of U.S. manned space.
- 5:42That is with the rendezvous coming up in just about three hours from now.
- 5:46Edward White's dramatic walk through space, a 12-minute walk that is, in orbit across the United States from California,
- 5:53northern Mexico, to across Georgia off Savannah.
- 5:58He will take it in about 12 minutes and possibly touch the second stage of the Titan rocket booster
- 6:05that will boost him hopefully into orbit in about a minute and a half.
- 6:09Minus 90 seconds and counting, the launch vehicle has gone to internal power.
- 6:13The launch vehicle is now on its own battery power.
- 6:16All systems still looking good in the spacecraft and with the launch vehicle itself.
- 6:21You will be receiving reports from Gemini Control here along.
- 6:25Right now we have NBC's Herbert Kepler outside our vantage point.
- 6:29He's standing by to give you a description of the launch as it takes place.
- 6:33We're going to switch you to Herb Kepler.
- 6:36It's the virtually clearest cloud this night and we should be able to see the booster
- 6:40for a considerable portion of the powered flight, perhaps two minutes.
- 6:44Sometimes on a clear day you can actually see the burnout of the first stage.
- 6:48You see in the pump of smoke which would mean the ignition of the second stage.
- 6:51It comes about two and a half minutes into the flight.
- 6:54It's warm, fun, hardly any breeze, and as we said, not a cloud that I can see in the sky over the Cape.
- 7:02Shortly after launch, there constantly will be a couple of jet fighter planes.
- 7:07We're looking good at this time.
- 7:10We see two wisps in the sky, but we're not sure that they're in second or they're the fighter aircraft,
- 7:16which I just have Leaper trails in there skewing forth from the career of the airplane.
- 7:22That's ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, zero.
- 7:33First the plane starts with smoke.
- 7:36Then in a few seconds it will start with a yellowish transparent flame.
- 7:41Coming forth on the forked effect, then the sound starts to rumble as the spacecraft moves up.
- 7:47In a few seconds it will start its roll program, which is for guidance.
- 7:57As far as we can tell, it seems to be performing well.
- 8:15It is now about three miles high.
- 8:21Now they are moving into the second phase of the pilots.
- 8:25If they would have to end the mission, they would go into a different procedure than the one that carried them through the first 50 seconds.
- 8:31We can no longer see it, but we can hear the last sounds.
- 8:37As far as we can tell, everything is going well.
- 8:40The G-forces should be building up slowly,
- 8:43perhaps to a maximum on the power part of the flight.
- 8:46There is a puff of smoke, which indicates the separation is about to take place in about a minute.
- 8:55We see some of the fighter airplanes, two of them, that climb alongside the booster trying to make motion pictures.
- 9:01There is a second trail from one of the airplanes making motion pictures in the altitude area of six to ten miles.
- 9:08It is a little bit of a slow journey for a spacecraft of one minute and twenty seconds.
- 9:13It is necessary, it doesn't look like it is necessary at this point.
- 9:19We are having some transmission difficulty from the spacecraft.
- 9:23The transmissions are intermittent.
- 9:29Twenty miles down the range, probably now about 30 miles.
- 9:39In about twenty seconds, the first stage of the booster should burn out.
- 9:44Then the second stage engines would start.
- 9:47The G-forces report Gemini for his go for staging, which will occur in a very few seconds.
- 9:59We have updated data on the computer onboard that spacecraft.
- 10:04We have staging and it is taking the ground.
- 10:11Now about 50 miles, 77 miles down range from Cape Kennedy.
- 10:17All we can see in the sky over Cape Kennedy at this point are the aircraft.
- 10:27Three minutes into the mission, three minutes.
- 10:31The trajectory is right on the line.
- 10:41Everything looks great, Jim.
- 10:48Jim has displayed the spacecraft.
- 10:54Flight forward, final speed.
- 10:58You are listening to the description of the flight from all angles.
- 11:03The capsule communicator.
- 11:07Everything is real good here, Mike.
- 11:12The trajectory is crap, going from console to console here.
- 11:16From each one, he gets a complete big confidence in the G-forces report.
- 11:21Everything looks good.
- 11:22We are four minutes into the mission.
- 11:26Mcdivitt has a very, very calm voice and it looks great up here.
- 11:34Craft has advised the stand-by for a final status check here.
- 11:38I know we got a little bit of a bite a minute ago or a little cut off.
- 11:44Craft has told Chris and Mcdivitt to give him a go.
- 11:48It has been received and Mcdivitt advises he also is go.
- 11:54The gait is not very good.
- 12:08Four minutes and fifty seconds.
- 12:10Our batteries are out.
- 12:12Right on the money.
- 12:16A hundred miles an hour, speed twelve and a half thousand miles an hour.
- 12:23Standby for point eight.
- 12:26We are point eight, that point where we have achieved eighty percent of the required velocity.
- 12:31Eighty percent.
- 12:32Five minutes and seventy seconds in.
- 12:37Where's the flight?
- 12:39Both systems, the guidance says we're starting.
- 12:41Second load system is the primary system in the booster and the radio guidance during the system.
- 12:46Five minutes and thirty seconds.
- 12:47Stand-by for a sustainer engine cut off.
- 12:51Here we go, Mcdivitt says.
- 12:53Anderson confirms here on the ground that we have a single system.
- 12:56Okay, looks a little short to me.
- 12:58Looks like it's going to cost up the advantage.
- 13:00Right.
- 13:04You can hear the voices of the astronauts in the background talking to one another.
- 13:08Right away, we have a call from Mcdivitt to give him a go.
- 13:13Five minutes and thirty seconds.
- 13:16Right.
- 13:20There's the repeat, here goes, seventy-four.
- 13:32We've been informed President Johnson is one-stop-several.
- 13:35He's getting a second from twenty-eight.
- 13:38Go ahead, five seconds for the first.
- 13:41He's got a minute when he separates from that second.
- 13:44He's getting the switch to U-H-F-10, Capcom.
- 13:48Everything right on the money.
- 13:55Red Craft, the mission director has given Mcdivitt and White a goal for their mission.
- 14:00They should be in orbit.
- 14:02Six minutes and fifty seconds, sir.
- 14:05Seventy-four has been asked to switch to another channel to clear up some.
- 14:10Here we go.
- 14:13This is being relayed through the Bermuda tracking station, through the mission control center now.
- 14:23We will shortly be getting Mcdivitt advises he has an incremental velocity indicator
- 14:29when in the spacecraft during the separation maneuver, which has occurred within the last minute.
- 14:34Red is following him, he's moving forward, he's moving right, and he's two down.
- 14:41This is where he will pull away slowly about three and a half miles an hour
- 14:45to separate only three hundred to four hundred feet from the booster.
- 14:48He's turning around at this time to face the booster.
- 14:54This will give him a direct check with the distance to the booster.
- 14:59He says the second stage, which he now has in view, looks pretty.
- 15:04He says he's also tumbling slightly.
- 15:08He can't get him on one alpha.
- 15:11Right hand, oh, you're clear to go on the space.
- 15:16Right, go ahead.
- 15:19Eighty-seven by one fifty-three, our Buna data coming in.
- 15:23That is a problem with the Alpha G.
- 15:25Eighty-seven by one fifty-three, our Buna data coming in.
- 15:28That is a nautical mile, which would be in round figures, a little less than a hundred to a hundred eighty-five.
- 15:34This orbit, the lowest point, eighty-seven miles versus Gemini Control, yes, in eight minutes and thirty-six
- 15:41into the mission, eighty-eight minutes and thirty seconds into the mission.
- 15:45The address of the here in the Kessler Renewing Area is just past two,
- 15:50Gemini Control, in Ed White via our Buna station, the following orbital elements,
- 15:55one hundred statute miles at parity, one hundred and seventy-five statute miles at apathy.
- 16:04This is exactly what the book calls for.
- 16:09We're nine minutes in.
- 16:12And stand by and we'll be prepared in a very few minutes to play the booster phase tape conversation for you.
- 16:21Stand by.
- 16:23We might mention that the orbital figure saw here in apathy, this is a high point, is a hundred and eighty-five miles.
- 16:30We don't know that this was a mistake on Mr. Hady's part.
- 16:33He could have made a mistake here with this hundred and seventy-five.
- 16:36We're going to receive the tape here in just a moment of the actual conversation between the astronauts
- 16:41during the powered portion of flight and capsule communicator,
- 16:45Josh Grissom, who made this flight a little more than two months ago.
- 16:50Should be coming up any time.
- 16:53Some of those voices in the background are that of the astronauts, some of them the capsule communicator,
- 16:59which would be Virgil Grissom, and then of course we're hearing some of, perhaps, the Bermuda tracking station.
- 17:04I'm not sure whether that's one of the voices coming in there.
- 17:07It is at this point, it would be interesting to see whether the second stage is tumbling too much.
- 17:13They mentioned it was tumbling, and this will determine largely whether White decides,
- 17:18when he steps out on the health side of the spacecraft activity, whether or not to try and touch it.
- 17:24They did say, but he did report, McIntosh reported that it was tumbling a little.
- 17:28As he said, it was pretty.
- 17:30I think it was his turn.
- 17:31No, he actually said it was tumbling.
- 17:32Yeah, and pretty, I think.
- 17:34So whether it's too much, we'll see.
- 17:37We're in a pretty close to novel in-circuit.
- 17:39We're at eighty-seven by one-five-three.
- 17:42He has the one alpha time.
- 17:44We're listening now to orbital information coming from Bermuda,
- 17:48talking about the altitudes of the orbit, and not yet listening to the Kate,
- 17:54made for the flight.
- 17:56He is on UAF number two.
- 18:03Actually, this spacecraft is already out of communication contact of the Kate here.
- 18:09It's in communication contact with Bermuda fast approaching the Canary Islands tracking station.
- 18:15All of this information is relayed very rapidly to the Mission Control Center in Houston.
- 18:25He should be somewhere between Bermuda and the Canary Islands on his first orbit.
- 18:30Supposed to hit the Canary Islands at about, oh, about 14 minutes, I think.
- 18:35He will be in communication contact. He'll be over in about 20 minutes.
- 18:39That's right.
- 18:40And apparently everything so far seems to be going fine.
- 18:43They're in orbit. The second stage is in orbit.
- 18:47And now the two gentlemen will be, we haven't heard yet whether they are in that 300-foot separation between the two space objects,
- 18:56but we'll probably get a report momentarily.
- 18:58The first orbit will be used largely by the two men to check the systems in the spacecraft
- 19:03before they go into the very important and intriguing second orbital operations.
- 19:10I think we're going to get that tape coming up now from Mission Control Center.
- 19:18I hear something sounding like the roar of the rocket in the background here.
- 19:22Yes, this is a rocket roar. This is a part portion of the tape playing playback.
- 19:35We are now 13 minutes into the flight, somewhere between Bermuda and the Canary Islands.
- 19:43And as far as we can tell, to this point, the flight is proceeding well.
- 19:47The first of what is hoped to be 62 encirclements of the Earth.
- 19:53That sounds like one of the chase planes.
- 19:56This is probably a recording of the first moments of launch where the chase planes,
- 20:00the two fighter planes, go up alongside and climb parallel to the booster,
- 20:04trying to take motion pictures at some of the higher altitudes.
- 20:07Of course, they can't stick around very long. The chase planes don't have the altitude capability.
- 20:11Let's see where we are. We're 13-plus minutes into the flight.
- 20:16We should have astronaut Edward White at this time going into his compartments under the seat,
- 20:22taking out his blood pressure bulb, his Hufflepuff Blast Camera and his film packs,
- 20:27the 16-millimeter movie camera and its magazines and lens and other equipment
- 20:31that will be needed to carry out the mission during the next two hours here.
- 20:35They should be getting some interesting photographs along about now of that booster trailing them.
- 20:39Of course, we would like to know just how far behind that booster is.
- 20:42Well, that's the big question at this point, whether they're able to –
- 20:47they will be able to get as close as they'd like.
- 20:50They have just now moved into communication contact with the Canary Island tracking station.
- 20:54This means the Gemini 4 spacecraft is more than 100 miles above the Atlantic.
- 20:59It's flying backwards. It's less than five minutes from shooting over the west coast of Africa.
- 21:04The Gemini 4 is in orbit with its back in forward
- 21:07so that the astronauts can keep a close eye on the Titan second stage.
- 21:11We understand from astronaut McNivet, the command pilot, that it is tumbling over and over
- 21:16and hopefully it is tumbling less than one rotation every 36 seconds
- 21:22or will be by the time we have our spacewalk by astronaut Ed White.
- 21:27Well, you said, I believe, that the low point of the first orbit is 87 nautical miles and the high point 153.
- 21:36You ought to figure out the statute miles. You multiply that by 1.15.
- 21:41We ought to have our own computer to do it.
- 21:44But it's certainly, if not right on, extremely close to what the designer high and low points were for the first orbit.
- 21:52Of course, they do change orbits later on as they maneuver.
- 21:55They try to perform certain of the operational schedule for the flight.
- 21:59I think that is pretty close to what they say nominal here.
- 22:0287 nautical miles would be 100 and 153 would be plus 17 and a half plus four would be 150, 17,
- 22:13so around 170 miles.
- 22:17They're short. They're lower. They're 10 miles or so lower.
- 22:20Right at this moment, command pilot James McNivet should be giving his control systems a full checkout.
- 22:27And this is, of course, to see if he can yaw and roll and pitch the spacecraft in slow motion and everything.
- 22:33And he is feeding all this information through the Canary Islands tracking stations.
- 22:37He's now in communication control.
- 22:39During this first orbit, the astronauts will physically check every part of their spacecraft
- 22:44to make sure that it is in operating condition for the extravehicular activity,
- 22:49that is astronaut Ed White's walk in space, which should be coming up in less than three hours now.
- 22:56Actually, he would step out into space.
- 23:02They left at 16 minutes after 11 Eastern Daylight Time.
- 23:05That would mean at 17 minutes after 2 Eastern Daylight Time.
- 23:10He should be starting his spacewalk.
- 23:12He will open the hatch about 10 minutes before this, which would be about 6 minutes after 2 Eastern Daylight Time,
- 23:18if everything goes as planned.
- 23:21The launch took place here 17 and a half minutes ago.
- 23:25And we are now approaching the west coast of Africa on this first orbit.
- 23:32And we're still waiting for the tape.
- 23:34We're going to hear now in just a few moments.
- 23:36We're going to get a report from Mission Control out in Houston, Texas.
- 23:40The voice you will hear is Information Affairs Officer Paul Haney out there.
- 23:45Possibly we'll know the position of the spacecraft and the Titan rocket second stage, what the situation is.
- 23:54Any moment now we'll be hearing from Paul Haney at Mission Control.
- 23:59We have about 30 seconds to go.
- 24:01We understand and we'll have that report.
- 24:03Meanwhile, the Gemini 4 spacecraft is now over the western coast of Africa.
- 24:09It has passed over the Canary Islands approaching the continent.
- 24:12Now let's go out to, we're 18 minutes into the flight.
- 24:19We're up on this report from Mission Control in Houston.
- 24:26We're having some difficulty, it appears, receiving this report from Mission Control in Houston.
- 24:32And we're over the western coast of Africa with a flight.
- 24:39We assume that what Haney is doing in Mission Control is gathering all the pertinent data
- 24:43to try and give a status report on the life of the orbit.
- 24:48And some of the other essential details is particularly interesting to us
- 24:53because of what people hope to achieve in the second orbit,
- 24:57which would be for White to step out of his spacecraft at the end of a 20-hour report.
- 25:02Here we go for that report from Paul Haney now.
- 25:05This is Gemini Control in Houston.
- 25:08The spacecraft at this time is directly over a Canary Island station.
- 25:12It is beginning its passage across the African continent.
- 25:17We are in excellent voice contact now.
- 25:20The crew has switched to a second, or a backup UHF channel,
- 25:24which reads much clearer than the other UHF channels they were using in the launch phase.
- 25:31Communications are coming through their X-Mobile upon contacting the Canary Station.
- 25:37Excellent. Jim McPivott was advised that his status was excellent from the ground.
- 25:44And the pilot came back with a Roger. Thank you.
- 25:48They ran out their onboard quantities, which appear to be quite nominal at this point in the spacecraft.
- 25:56They are being updated as to the time and the exact time references.
- 26:03For a recovery, should one be come necessary at the end of the first revolution.
- 26:09We see nothing in this first 20 minutes of flight, which would make such a recovery necessary,
- 26:14but it's standard procedure to pass this along.
- 26:17We can hear it light the big marathons, voice building in now into the Canary Station.
- 26:23We can relay it back here.
- 26:25This is Gemini Control in 20 minutes after the hour.
- 26:29You have been listening to a description of the blast-off and start of the historic four-day Gemini two-man spaceflight,
- 26:35which is scheduled to continue until Monday morning.
- 26:38The experiment in which Major White leaves the spacecraft and the craft itself is to be maneuvered
- 26:43close to the burned-out second stage of the booster,
- 26:46occur near the end of the second orbit, which will be sometime after 2 p.m.
- 26:51This afternoon, some minutes before the beginning of the experiment,
- 26:55WGY will rejoin NBC for continuous coverage of the spectacular phase of the flight
- 27:01and always, of course, will bring you regular bulletins on its progress.
- 27:05You are listening to stations WGY and WGSM in Schenectady.
- 27:10Now, Casey Stengel coming out to home plate with his lineup guide to present to the umpire,
- 27:17the home plate umpire in this game, Mel Steiner, out for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Coach Alex Bremman.
- 27:22And this is the way the card reads.
- 27:24For the New York Mets, Bobby Krause to lead off.
- 27:26He'll be back at second base.
- 27:28At Greenpool, batting second at first base.
- 27:30Joe Christopher, right field.
- 27:32Batting in the third batting position.
- 27:34Batting in the cleanup spot, Charlie Smith back in the lineup at third base.
- 27:38Juan Sobota has removed to left field.
- 27:40He'll be batting fifth.
- 27:41Jim Eklund in center field, batting sixth.
- 27:44Melom the shortstop, batting seventh.
- 27:46And Chris Catazel the catcher, batting eighth.
- 27:48Galen Siskofitch, he's batting ninth.
- 27:50Mets are using Joe Christopher in right field for the first time this year,
- 27:54mainly because he has played right field here in Forbes Field.
- 27:57It's a very difficult field to play because of the flaning wall
- 28:00that extends from the foul pole out toward right center field.
- 28:03Juan Sobota moved over to left field, playing left field for the first time,
- 28:06and left field a little more regular in play.
- 28:09For the Pittsburgh Pirates, who have moved up in these standings,
- 28:12they have a record now of 21 wins and 24 losses,
- 28:15having won their last 12 consecutive ball games.
- 28:18Bob Manning will be leading off and playing third base.
- 28:21Phil Burton playing in center field, batting second.
- 28:23Roberto Gomeni in right field, batting third.
- 28:26Willie Sajul in left field in the cleanup spot.
- 28:29Don Flandenda in first base, batting fifth.
- 28:31Bill Mazurowski at second base, batting sixth.
- 28:34Henry Rogers, a shortstop, batting seventh.
- 28:37The catcher will be Jim Faliarone.
- 28:39He is batting eighth, head on the mound, Joe Gevin batting ninth.
- 28:42And now the Pirates take the field.
- 28:44Still some twilight here in this area.
- 28:46Lights are not taking too much effect.
- 28:49And this ball game, the first of a five-game series.
- 28:52Tomorrow night, the Mets will play against the Pirates,
- 28:55and the starting pitchers for that ball game will be Jack Fisher against Bob Grant.
- 28:59And now, ladies and gentlemen, our national anthem.
- 30:30Beautiful playing.
- 30:32Thank you very much, Ralph.
- 30:33Hello, everybody.
- 30:34Left-handed Joe Gevin is out there on the mound.
- 30:36This is Ralph Fogelman.
- 30:38He's a Pirates that won 12 consecutive games.
- 30:41The longest win streak in the Major League season.
- 30:43They were rained out here last night.
- 30:45They'll do it against the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 30:47I'd like to take you to a fantastic stewards' night here as a former Pirate.
- 30:51Now, first baseman for the Phillies wants to have been honored.
- 30:54However, that was washed away.
- 30:56And the New York Mets are in town now for a single game tonight,
- 30:59one tomorrow night, Saturday afternoon, and a doubleheader on Sunday.
- 31:02Bobby Klaus is up to lead.
- 31:04Offy's hitting through 13.
- 31:05He has one home run and seven runs out at end.
- 31:10Joe Gevin with a record of no wins and four losses.
- 31:12Gips into the motion, and here's the first pitcher.
- 31:14The ball game flung on and pops up.
- 31:16Down towards first, across the line, and Klaus Erichard.
- 31:19McClendon is there, and Clinton makes the game.
- 31:22Klaus has fouled out the first on the first pitch of the game.
- 31:25The first one away, and Ed Cranesville is coming up against the left-hander.
- 31:29Cranesville tonight is batting second in the lineup.
- 31:31He's hitting 340.
- 31:33He has four homers and 26 runs out at end.
- 31:38Cranesville is the leading net batter among the regulars at 340.
- 31:41And Don Glenn-Denham, the Pirate's first baseman, is the leading batter among the Pirate regulars, also hitting 340.
- 31:47Here's the pitcher, and it's high for a ball.
- 32:01Gevin pitches a net for a call strike, as Ed Cranesville was taking.
- 32:12Gevin looks for a sign from Pagliaroni.
- 32:14That's it, and here's the 1-1 delivery. Breaking ball, and this is blown away.
- 32:18So it's two balls and one strike.
- 32:20Joe Gevin started against the Mets in New York last Saturday.
- 32:23He faced five men while pitching one-third of an inning.
- 32:26He allowed a three-run homer to Joe Christopher.
- 32:28The Pirates finally won that game seven to four.
- 32:30Don Chua got the win in relief.
- 32:32Here's 2-1 pitch, and it's in for a call strike.
- 32:36He went to the fastball. It's 2-2.
- 32:38Last year, Joe Gevin against the Mets, 1-2 and lost one.
- 32:42His lifetime record against the Mets is four wins and two losses.
- 32:47Now the 2-2 delivery.
- 32:49Swung on and fouled back into the seats and out of play.
- 32:51The count holds at 2-2 with one man out and nobody on base.
- 32:55Yogi Berro on the coaching line for the Mets at first base,
- 32:58and Don Hefner's on the line at third.
- 33:00The Mets, of course, were rained out yesterday afternoon in Chicago,
- 33:04so they came on to Pittsburgh a little early.
- 33:082-2 pitch. Low for a ball.
- 33:10The count is run full. The Crane Bulls, 3-2.
- 33:15So the Mets had one tie in Chicago and one rained out and won the other two games,
- 33:20so they swept the Pirates.
- 33:22Here's a playoff pitch. Swung on and missed.
- 33:24Trug him out.
- 33:26Joe Gevin chalks up his first strike out of the evening.
- 33:28There are two away, nobody on base, and Joe Christopher is coming up.
- 33:31Joe, a former Pittsburgh pilot himself, has a nine-game hitting streak going.
- 33:36He's hitting 250 for the season with two homers and 20 runs batted in.
- 33:40Joe Christopher.
- 33:44Christopher batting number three in manager Casey's singles batting order.
- 33:50In Milwaukee this evening, at the end of a half inning, the Giants nothing
- 33:54and the Braves coming to bat. Bob Shaw against Ken Johnson making his start for the Braves.
- 33:58It's all-night action in the National League.
- 34:00The Dodgers are at St. Louis. Houston at Cincinnati.
- 34:04Here's a pitch in for Carl Zeich.
- 34:06The Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs are not scheduled.
- 34:09In the American League, the Minnesota Twins this afternoon beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3.
- 34:14The Twins are on top in the American League.
- 34:16Gamilow Pasquale got his seventh straight win. He has lost nine.
- 34:20Billy Mambo's catch started and picked the last five out.
- 34:22It's now the two-run homers.
- 34:24Here's a pitch swung on and missed. Slow curveball.
- 34:26A two-side count.
- 34:28Here's Christopher. The afternoon game between Boston and Minnesota, the only American League game scheduled.
- 34:36Two and a half. Nobody on base here on the top half of the first.
- 34:41Joe Gibbon from Newton, Mississippi, has a BS degree from the University of Mississippi,
- 34:46where he was an outstanding athlete.
- 34:52And here's the two-strike delivery.
- 34:55It's one and two. The umpire behind the plate is Mel Steiner.
- 34:59Al Varlich is at first. Augie Donatelli is at second.
- 35:02And Sam Landis is around at third.
- 35:07The one-two pitch.
- 35:09In there for Carl. Strike three as he got Christopher looking for his second strike out of the inning.
- 35:16No runs, no hits, no errors, none left.
- 35:18Score at the end of a half and he gets a mess nothing and the power is coming to bat.
- 35:22It's hard to imagine New York City without every kind of jazz from Dixieland to Progretti.
- 35:26Fortunately you don't have to.
- 35:38That's Backstreet Rag, a uniquely American sound.
- 35:42It came up from Mississippi out of New Orleans with the Negro Jazzmen who played it to the world.
- 35:47They didn't stop with Dixieland and the blues.
- 35:57Little David's Fugue by John Lewis is a new sound that's part of a new generation.
- 36:02But whether it's the old jazz or the new, it's thirsty work for the musicians.
- 36:06And when they put down their instruments, they'll pick up a cold beer, often wrangled, extra dry.
- 36:11In fact, in New York City, where there are more kinds of jazz than in any other city in the world, more people drink Reingold than any other beer.
- 36:19Why do so many people like Reingold? We don't know, but we must be doing something right.
- 36:29We'll be going out of the bottom half of the first inning and Bob Bailey will be up to face Galen Fisco with one man in line two so far.
- 36:37Most of the meds spent most of the day at the hotel watching and listening to the progress of the American astronauts.
- 36:44And with regard to that, Orbit Number 7 started about a half hour ago and everything is going normal now with American astronauts, White and McZivot.
- 36:55We'll keep you posted if there is any news to report with regard to their further progress during the course of this ballgame.
- 37:03Bob Bailey up now, he's hitting 245. He has three almost and 13 runs about a damn near to swinging the foul ball back and out of play.
- 37:09He's strike one.
- 37:19Fisco is making his fourth start of the season. He hits the pitch twice in relief against the Pirates for a total of two innings, in which he'll have four hits and three runs.
- 37:27Here's a pitch and it's half a ball. Last season, Fisco was nothing in one against the Pirates. Here's lifetime back against them is nothing in four.
- 37:40Fisco looks in to get a tie from Chris Canisero. And here is a one-one pitch. Fitch is way out, out off the glove of Canisero, comes all the way back, it's two and one.
- 37:52This is the first appearance of the New York Mets here at Fort Field this season. It is the last ballpark for the Mets that they did before starting the second time around.
- 38:04So here it is early June and the Mets are just now making their first appearance at Fifth Brigade.
- 38:09And as you know, under the 162-game schedule, each team plays in every other park a total of nine games. So the Mets will play five of their nine against the Pirates in this homestand.
- 38:25Here is the swinging of it, two and two.
- 38:29This weekend, the Mets and the Pirates played four games at Shea Stadium in New York. Each team plays every other team a total of 18 times during the course of the season, nine at home and nine away.
- 38:42So when this series is complete, the Mets will have played half of their season's total with the Pirates.
- 38:50Two and two is the count of Alias to play, Cisco deals, and it's in there for a call strike three, a fastball by him, and Galen Cisco starts up a strikeout.
- 38:59That brings up centerfield to Bill Burton of the Pirates, hitting 303 at one home run, and eight runs that it ends.
- 39:06And playing centerfield, and let me see.
- 39:09On the coaching line for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Johnny Pesky is at first base and Alex Jamis is the coach at third.
- 39:16The Pirates manage to get here by Harry Walker, Harry the Hatch.
- 39:23Burton is a left-hand batter, started out originally in the Yankee system.
- 39:29Here is the pitch that is outside for a ball.
- 39:37Yankees gave up Burton to the Cardinals when they got Enos Flutter.
- 39:40Here's a one-oh pitch, change, and it hit on the ground to second.
- 39:43Clouse is over up with it, Craneville goes to the bag, and there's a suggestion, time two away.
- 39:48Craneville started for the ball at first and then saw Clouse, which gets good, so then had to hustle over to the bag, six-two.
- 39:55Two away, and Roberto Cementi is up now.
- 39:59Lennon, against the New York Mets, has been going like a house of fire.
- 40:03He's 11 for 19, that is a clip of five, 79.
- 40:07Mets couldn't get him out last weekend.
- 40:09This season's batting average is up now to 308, he has 17 runs batted in.
- 40:14Right-hand batter.
- 40:19Galen Sisco with the pitch, to the right-hand batter and it's inside for a ball.
- 40:23The Mets with an end field of Ed Craneville at first, Bobby Clouse at second, Roy Mcmillan at shortstop, and Charlie Smith at third.
- 40:29Ron Favota in left field tonight, Jim Hickman in center, Joe Christopher in right field.
- 40:37Here's a pitch inside. Right field can be a tough one here at Forksfield because there is a wall out there and there is a screen also off which the ball is in play.
- 40:46Joe Christopher, having played with the parrots here, is familiar with it and the Mets management figured they'd rather have Christopher over there than to have Favota over there.
- 40:54Favota never having played at this ballpark at all.
- 40:57He's just playing in a foul ball, backing out of play.
- 41:00So it is Favota playing left field and Christopher playing right.
- 41:05Last year, of course, Christopher was the regular right fielder for the Mets throughout most of the season.
- 41:13He was switched over to left at the start of sling training this year because the Mets were breaking at that time, but Johnny Lewis would be given a good shot at being the regular right fielder.
- 41:24Here's a 2-1 pitch, high for a ball.
- 41:26For now, Cusco goes behind 3-1 to Roberto Clemente and Willie Sargill is on deck.
- 41:46Cusco with a 3-1 delivery and it's low. He walks Clemente. Coming with two men out here in the bottom of the first and Willie Sargill is coming up.
- 41:56Sargill is another man the Mets are getting up. He's got 7 for 16. That's 438.
- 42:02This season's running average is 241. Sargill leads the Paracen home runs with 10 and he is second and runs that at end with 23.
- 42:11Clemente leads the Paracen RBI to 27. Two men out in the runner's first. No score in the bottom half of the first inning. Forbesfield in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- 42:27Clemente leads at first base. Cusco's pitch is low and away from all. Clemente is kneeling in the on deck circle.
- 42:40Forbesfield, scene of a 1960 World Series between the Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 42:49One old pitch, low and hit on the ground to second. Second by Clouetown. Throw it on in time and Sargill ground-dragged Clouetown to Plainville.
- 42:56No runs, no hits, no one left and the score at the end of the inning is the Mets nothing in the Pirates.
- 43:03Mets to be coming home to Shea Stadium Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Thursday night against the San Francisco Giants. Friday night, Saturday afternoon and a doubleheader on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 43:12Do you like to purchase tickets for any future games of the New York Mets at Shea Stadium? The advanced ticket window at Shea Stadium is open 7 days a week.
- 43:21It's open weekdays 8 to 6 and weekends from 9 to 5. There is a Mets ticket office for the special convenience of commuters at Central Vanya Station and another at the Grand Central Terminal.
- 43:32At SEM Station it's in the Long Island Railroad waiting room. Open weekdays 8 to 6, Saturdays 8 to 4 at Grand Central at the foot of the 42nd Street and Vandiver Avenue ramps.
- 43:40Open weekdays 8 to 6, Saturdays 8 to 4 for Long Island. There is a Mets ticket office at Macy's and Huntington open during regular store hours.
- 43:47Reservations can be made for Boston Reserved seats at any of the Howard's Lowestor in the Greater New York area.
- 43:52There is SEMS and Reservation service at all Childs, West Boston, Calico Kitchens in the Greater New York area.

- 44:10We pass now for station identification. This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 44:14This is WGY, 8 Tenant Isles, connect with me. The time is 8.31.
- 44:27This is Lindsay Nelson with Ralph Keiner and Bob Murphy at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- 44:32And Charlie Smith is up for the Mets. Joe Gibbon deals the pitch.
- 44:35Swung on and popped up foul. Coming on back is Kechup Calderoni, but it's in the deep and out of play.
- 44:42Well, there's a big Ron Swaboda banner in the third deck here at Forbes Field.
- 44:51Only banner, I say, of any kind around the ballpark.
- 44:56Charlie Smith, after having been out of the Mets lineup with a cold and a respiratory infection, is back in the night at third base.
- 45:04Here's the pitch, swung on and Charlie Smith is a little bit out of here doing batting practice.
- 45:09He says he feels fine. He's hitting 276 for the PZ at five homers and 20 runs battered in.
- 45:16He was in the midst of a hot streak when he went out of the lineup.
- 45:20The two-strike delivery, and it's a little tight for Charlie. It's one and two.
- 45:25Swaboda is waiting in the on-deck circle. Ron, of course, was out of the lineup during the Chicago series, but he's back in the night.
- 45:32He just pulled off for a day or two to try to get himself reorganized.
- 45:36Here's the one-two pitch, swung on and missed for strike three.
- 45:40Actually, he tipped it a little bit back into the glove of Al Joroni, says umpire Steiner.
- 45:47One away, and now Ron Swaboda, who has 11 home runs and 28 runs battered in, is hitting 273.
- 45:54Ron Swaboda, one!
- 45:59The same boost, Swaboda, about here, there, about previously.
- 46:04The pitch to the right hand battered, swung on and missed for strike one.
- 46:08Hickman drove in four runs, and each of the next runs in Chicago.
- 46:16Now it's going, aren't we?
- 46:18We are missing the play-by-play for Hickman's at bat, but he did fly out to Roberto Clemente in right field.
- 46:28There was nothing across for the Mets in their second inning.
- 46:40We're going out to the bottom half of the second inning, and first baseman Don Glenn Dunnant is up to lead off for the Pirates.
- 46:47Glenn Dunnant, off to a great start with a 340 batting average.
- 46:52He has three home runs with 27 runs battered in.
- 46:55And the number three, Don Glenn Dunnant.
- 47:03And Glenn is a tall, rangy right hand batter, facing right hand pitcher Galen Sisco.
- 47:10Inside for ball, it's 1-0.
- 47:13Mr. John Galbraith, the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, is here tonight.
- 47:30Sisco, back off the rubber, Don Glenn Dunnant steps out.
- 47:34Sisco was the captain of the 1958 Ohio State football team.
- 47:39Mr. John Galbraith was one of his big backers, of course.
- 47:43Here's a swing and a ground ball to clear it, taken by Charlie Flint, and he throws on in time, so there's one away.
- 47:49John Galbraith is one of the big, big supporters of the Ohio State football team.
- 47:55And Sisco was linebacker and captain of the 1958 team.
- 48:00Here's Joe Masurowski coming up.
- 48:03Mas is hitting 316 with two homers and 12 runs battered in.
- 48:09Well, you wonder where you find baseball players.
- 48:12Sometimes you just find them.
- 48:14He was signed, as was right out of a tryout camp.
- 48:17Here's a pitch low for a ball.
- 48:20One away, nobody on base, and the bottom of the second.
- 48:30One-oh pitch and it's low for a ball, two and 0.
- 48:54We're still sort of in twilight time here in Pittsburgh.
- 48:57Here's a pitch low for a ball, as there is a mixture now of daylight and artificial light.
- 49:05Sisco's gone behind three balls and no strikes to Masurowski.
- 49:08Sisco has struck out one and walked one so far.
- 49:11Waiting on back is the shortstop, Andre Rogers.
- 49:26Three-oh pitch and it's done for a call strike.
- 49:29It's three and one.
- 49:38And the three-one delivery, misses low and away, ball four.
- 49:43Second walk issued by Sisco puts Mas out at first with one man out and Andre Rogers coming up.
- 49:48The shortstop is hitting 340, one homer and 10 runs battered in.
- 49:58For the past three seasons, Rogers was the regular shortstop of the Chicago Cubs.
- 50:06Came to the park in exchange for shortstop Bobby Panger, who now is the regular shortstop for the Cubs.
- 50:15And there was some cash in the deal as well.
- 50:21There's a pitch and it's in for a call strike and it's thrown down to first not in time.
- 50:30Rogers originally was the property of the Giants.
- 50:34He was signed when a visiting high school principal happened to see him playing softball.
- 50:43Here's a pitch and it's thrown on and bowled back, two strike counts.
- 50:56The usher here at Forbes Field has been re-outfitted this season.
- 51:00They are wearing jackets and matching hats this year.
- 51:13This is a two-strike delivery to Rogers and it's a little tight, one and two.
- 51:18One man out and Andre at first, no score in the bottom of the second.
- 51:26At the end of an inning and a half now, the Giants nothing to braves, nothing, Bob Shaw against Ken Johnson.
- 51:38Zizko looks for a sign, Mataloski leads it first.
- 51:41Zizko steps off and does not throw.
- 51:49One-two pitch, thrown on and hits on the ground through the hole in the left for Bay Fit.
- 51:54The drive by Swoboda and Mataloski second and that's the first hit of the game coming off the bat of Andre Rogers with one man out here in the bottom of the second.
- 52:04The pilots have runners in first and second with one man out and Gaglione is coming up.
- 52:09Gaglione is hitting 232 with four homers and 13 runs to batting death.
- 52:23As we promised, we'll try to keep you posted on the progress of the American astronauts White and Mcdivitt throughout the course of this fall game.
- 52:33Here is the pitch and it's in for a call strike to value running.
- 52:37Astronaut White is now asleep and Mcdivitt is piloting the capsule.
- 52:43Gemini control has given the go-ahead to do 18 orbits.
- 52:51Ed White had quite a time walking around outside that kept through the day.
- 52:58Here's the swing and a foul ball off and out of play.
- 53:02And Andy Rogers at first thought that it was a pass ball and he had moved up and was trying to get Mazz to move on.
- 53:07It was off the end of the batter's value on it, the two-strike count.
- 53:12Also a bulletin. President Johnson has just announced that he is withdrawing all remaining United States Marines from Santo Domingo.
- 53:25One man out, runners first, second, no score.
- 53:27Two-strike count to Paglione with pitcher Joe Gibbon on deck.
- 53:30And here's the pitch just missed inside, one and two.
- 53:34There is action down in the mid-bow pin.
- 53:36Now Tom Parsons, the long man in the bow pin, in more ways than one.
- 53:40He's up and throwing.
- 53:42He was formerly the property of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 53:49Here's the one-two pitch, both tied, it's two and two.
- 53:56Paglione last year was out hit on the Pirate's Bow Club only by Roberto Comete.
- 54:03Paglione had a season's running average last year of 295.
- 54:18Mazarski at second, Rodgers at first, Sisco off the stretch.
- 54:25And he steps off the rubber. Paglione steps out of the batter's box.
- 54:38Now we're set once again.
- 54:40Two-two pitch, swung on in mid.
- 54:42Sisco strikes out Paglione for his second strike out of the ninth.
- 54:47Two away runners holding for his second and Joe Gibbon's coming up.
- 54:51Joe Gibbon is a pretty good hitting pitcher.
- 54:53He's been a four-team down this year and he's had two hits.
- 54:57But he's a fine all-around athlete.
- 54:59Started his baseball career as a first baseman.
- 55:20Gibbon is a right-hand batter. Here's the pitch and it's a check swing foul ball.
- 55:24Back in the thick and out of play for strike one.
- 55:29Danny Murtagh, who retired last year as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates,
- 55:35is on hand here tonight and he was in the Mets dugout before the ball game,
- 55:39renewing a few acquaintances.
- 55:41He's still in the Pirate organization.
- 55:44Murtagh took over here in 1957 from Bobby Reagan.
- 55:50Here's the pitch and it's in for a called strike.
- 55:52A two-strike count, not a Gibbon.
- 56:09Runners lead for his second.
- 56:11Here's the pitch, breaking ball swung on and missed and dropped by Canada.
- 56:16He picks it up and Tag's Gibbon, the side, is retired.
- 56:21No runs, one hit, one walk, no errors, two left.
- 56:25The score at the end of two is the Pirates nothing and the Mets nothing.
- 56:31Well, here's the date you want to make a note of, Saturday afternoon, July 24th,
- 56:36because that will be the date of the annual Old Timers Day at Shade Stadium.
- 56:40The top stars of the old New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers will be assembled
- 56:43from all over the country to appear once again before the local fans.
- 56:47We'll be telling you who they are throughout the next few weeks
- 56:49as their acceptance has come in.
- 56:51The Mets will play host to the Philadelphia Phillies that day
- 56:54and that game will take place right after all the colorful and nostalgic ceremonies
- 56:58that make Old Timers Day one of the most popular events of the year.
- 57:03The date again, Saturday, July 24th, so make your plans to attend right now.
- 57:08By the way, that will also be Lady's Day.
- 57:11We're going to the third inning, no score on the ballgame,
- 57:14and if anybody should be familiar with these surroundings,
- 57:17it's a fellow named Ralph Keiner because during his fabulous career in the National League,
- 57:22there were seven seasons when he was in a powered uniform
- 57:25that nobody in the National League hit more home runs than Ralph Keiner.
- 57:29Here he is.
- 57:31Thank you, Lindsey, and hi there, everyone.
- 57:34Top of the third, the first time up for Roy McMillan as he comes up against Joe Gibbons.
- 57:39So far Joe has retired six in a row, striking out three in the process.
- 57:50Roy, a right-hand batter, and the first pitch by the left-hand pitcher
- 57:53is taking a fastball in for a strike.
- 57:56McMillan batting at 2.56, one home run and 14 runs battered in.
- 58:01He'll be followed by Chris Candacero and Galen Cisco here in the top of the third.
- 58:06No score on the game.
- 58:11And a swing and a miss at strike two.
- 58:14All this game being beamed around the world through the Armed Forces,
- 58:18by Armed Forces Radio, and salute from us right here in Forbes Field to all of you everywhere.
- 58:24Two-strike delivery is way inside a slider, and Roy has to pull away the count now.
- 58:26middle of Bay City. The Mets have their free kick.
- 58:28It's one ball and two strikes.
- 58:30It's the first pitch.
- 58:33And the Mets have their free kick.
- 58:36It's a two-strike delivery.
- 58:36Twilight still taking some of the effect away from the lights here at Forbes Field.
- 58:39And a swing and a miss.
- 58:40It's a pitcher's night right up to now.
- 58:42It's a two-strike delivery.
- 58:45And the Mets have their free kick.
- 58:49It's a two-strike delivery.
- 58:52It's a two-strike delivery.
- 59:09Well picked up by Bill Burton in center field.
- 59:13Roy McGrillon, the first man to reach for the New York Mets.
- 59:18in 36 games. At the end of two, Milwaukee won San Francisco nothing. Bob Shaw pitching
- 59:24for the Johns against Ken Johnson for the Braves. Starting pitchers at St. Louis, the
- 59:28Dodgers there. Sandy Koufax going for the Dodgers and Bob Perkey pitching for the St.
- 59:34Louis Cardinals. First pitch to Chris Cannazeros, swung on and fouled at strike one. Bob Perkey
- 59:41is taking over the starting rotation from Tracy Stalart. Tracy coming up with a back
- 59:47injury in Houston. Also scheduled in the National League, Houston at Cincinnati, Philadelphia
- 59:55and Chicago not scheduled. One game complete in the American League, Minnesota playing
- 1:00:00Boston winning 4-3 behind Pasquale in seventh wind. The runner goes, a swing and the ball
- 1:00:05dropped by the catcher and Roy McMillan goes in the second. Dolan Bates for Roy. Chris
- 1:00:10Cannazeros on the pitch, swinging at a pitch that was low and inside protecting the runner.
- 1:00:15Good play by Chris Cannazeros. It bothered Pallieroni and he dropped the ball. There
- 1:00:19was no play at second. So the Mets have a runner at second base. No one out. Top of
- 1:00:26the third. And the two strike pitch. Back to play. It's off of the club and it actually
- 1:00:35hit Cannazeros. McMillan was off to third. He'll have to go back to second and Chris
- 1:00:39Cannazeros who is rushed by the pitches on at first. So the Mets for the first time have
- 1:00:43runners at first and second. Still low and away and Galen Sisco coming up. They are young
- 1:00:50people's future depends on your hiring them today. Call your local State Employment Service
- 1:00:55office for details on this summer's youth opportunity campaign. Galen Sisco the batter.
- 1:01:10And it has been up one time and had four hits. Correction, it has been up four times and
- 1:01:17had one hit. Now the Barrett's looking for a punt and he swings away and fouls the ball
- 1:01:22down the right field side. By Don Glendinan who didn't close. Both Glendinan and Bob Bailey
- 1:01:28charging in and Galen Sisco not funny with the defense so tight. One strike count. Roy
- 1:01:35McMillan at second base. A base hit and a stolen base is first this year. Chris Cannazeros
- 1:01:53first and now fake and a throw at second base as Joe Gibbons swings around. No one covering
- 1:01:58the ball. McMillan back to the back. Don Glendinan already at about 60 feet away from Galen Sisco.
- 1:02:07He's just completely ignoring the runner at first base. Correction, Cannazeros there has
- 1:02:13to worry about Bill Mazurowski. The second baseman. Now the pitch back. Taking inside
- 1:02:21off the glove of Pali Rodin. McMillan trying for third. He gets in there and no play. Going
- 1:02:26behind the play down to second base is Chris Cannazeros and a throw at a wild pitch. All
- 1:02:31off the glove of Jim Pali Rodin. He picked it up right behind the batter and it looks
- 1:02:36as though he might have a shot at third base but he didn't let go of the ball and Roy slid
- 1:02:41in with no throw being made. So the Mets now have runners at second and third. No one away
- 1:02:47in the top of the third. No score in the game. And the pitch back to Cannazeros to Chris.
- 1:02:54And he swings and fouls it off. The count goes at one ball two strikes once again. One and
- 1:03:15two on Galen Sisco. The wind up and the pitch back to the right hand batter. A foul ball
- 1:03:22again this time on the right side into the stands and the count holds at one and two.
- 1:03:35Infield playing it against the Mets here in the top of the third hoping to cut off a run.
- 1:03:40On deck batter Bobby Clough. Now once again at Joe Gibbon back to the play. And the pitch
- 1:03:45bounce to the middle. It goes on through in the center field. Throwing easy Roy McMillan
- 1:03:49for third but holding at third base moving over from second is Chris Cannazeros. Chris
- 1:03:54had to wait at second base to see whether or not Bill Mazurowski could come up with
- 1:03:58a play. He almost got to the ball. It was a high bouncer right through the middle. But
- 1:04:02it went around through and then Cannazeros moved over to third. So the Mets have taken
- 1:04:06the early lead here by scoring a run in the top of the third. Joe Lowe went away. Galen
- 1:04:10Sisco on at first base with his second hit this year. He's been up five times. And the
- 1:04:15second coming up is Bobby Clough. Bobby a right hand batter hit the first pitch his
- 1:04:30first time up. Cloughed out to the first baseman. Joe Gibbon in the stretch side and to the
- 1:04:39right. And Clough takes the strike in the outside corner. One strike down on Bobby Clough.
- 1:04:51Bobby batting at two-thirteen. Now the left hander back again and the curveball filed
- 1:05:01away coming straight back from home plate. The cow moves up to hole in two. Tommy Sisco
- 1:05:08the right hander warming up in the bullpen for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mets lead one
- 1:05:13nothing with no one out. We're in the top of the third inning. Runners at first and
- 1:05:17third for the New York Saints. Two strike count on Bobby Clough. Infield back looking
- 1:05:26for the double play with the exception of the third baseman Bob Bailey. And the pitch
- 1:05:29back is low and away. One ball and two strikes. Don Glennendon at first base holding against
- 1:05:39the runner there. Lights are starting to take much better effect now here at Forbes Field.
- 1:05:47Twilight sort of disappearing. One-two pitch bounce slowly foul down the third base side
- 1:05:52taken by Don Hefner. He looks at it and tosses it out to the mound. Count stays at one and
- 1:05:59two on Clough. First 45 minutes of this game suddenly a difficult time for the hitters
- 1:06:07to see as the Twilight had more effect than the field lights here at Forbes Field. Now
- 1:06:15one ball and two strikes. Joe Given back to the plate and the pitch taken inside a fast
- 1:06:20ball. Count evens at two and two. Two balls, two strikes. Given sets again. And his next
- 1:06:39pitch is his hind here on the first base side. Bill Mazurowski and Don Glennendon there.
- 1:06:45Don Glennendon makes the call and makes the catch. So the Firehouse have picked up their
- 1:06:50first out here at the top of the third. Runners holding at first and third and it brings up
- 1:06:55left hand hitting Eddie Craneball. Craneball struck out swinging at a three-two fastball
- 1:07:05at first time up. One of the three strikeouts registered by the left-hander Joe Given. Mets
- 1:07:15have one run and two hits. The Pirates have no run and one base hit. Runners at first
- 1:07:23and third. The pitch by Joe Given is hit foul off to the left side and with a stand strike
- 1:07:29one, Craneball behind a fastball fouling the ball off to the left side. One strike out
- 1:07:40with one away in the top of the third. Mets in front one nothing. And given back to Craneball
- 1:07:48and the ball is fouled again to the left side. This time a curveball fouled off the end of
- 1:07:52the bat. So Joe Given out in front 0-2. John has scored a run in the top of the third against
- 1:07:59Milwaukee that scored outside at 1-1 with the Braves coming up in the bottom half of the
- 1:08:04third against Bob Shaw. Ken Johnson pitching for the Braves. Now the two strike pitch.
- 1:08:12Curveball hits deep to center field. This will score a run. Tagged up a third is Cannadero.
- 1:08:17Holding halfway at first base as the run scores across the plate to Mets take a lead 2-0 Galen
- 1:08:22Sisko. So a fly ball, a sacrifice fly for Eddie Craneball. His 27th run batted in this
- 1:08:29year. He leads the club in that department with the exception of runs for Bota who has
- 1:08:3528. And the batter coming up is Joe Christopher. Joe, right hand batter, was called out and
- 1:08:45strikes his first time up. Joe has a nine game consecutive game streak going. Over that
- 1:08:58period he batted 382. And his first pitch is outside of Lowell. Fastball moving away
- 1:09:05at ball one. Mets lead 2-0 with two outs in the top of the third. Larks with a 12 game
- 1:09:22streak going for them, the longest in the league this year. Now the one-oh delivery slipping
- 1:09:28out of the hand to give it a good play on it by Pagliaroni. Ball two. Ball is high and
- 1:09:32away. Two balls, no strikes. Roy McMillan got it going with a single through the middle
- 1:09:43of the first hit for the Mets in the third. Chris Catazero is hit by a pitch ball. McMillan
- 1:09:48had stolen second for that put runner at first and second. A long fly ball to right. Galen
- 1:09:53Sisko single in a run and a fly ball by Craneball got the other now done. Roberto Clemente makes
- 1:09:59the catch to retire to size. Two runs in the inning for the Mets on two hits. No errors
- 1:10:05and one man left on and the score at the end of two and a half the Mets two, the Pirates
- 1:10:10nothing. You know there's a lot more to beer drinking than meets the eye and you'd be
- 1:10:15surprised at what strong feelings people have about what they drink their beer out of. Some
- 1:10:20people like to drink beer from a can and some from a bottle. And there are those who wouldn't
- 1:10:24drink it anyway but from a glass. We think a lot of rangle drinkers are going to be happy
- 1:10:29with our new Chug-A-Mug. The Chug-A-Mug is a wide mouthed glass mug that holds 12 ounces
- 1:10:35of rangle extra dry. It doesn't even feel right when you pick it up. A little cold brown
- 1:10:40mug has a shape and weight and gurgle of a good third crunching drink of beer. Of course
- 1:10:46that's what you get because there's rangle inside. You don't need an opener either. You
- 1:10:51just pull the tab and the top comes off with a hint that sounds like the good rangle flavor.
- 1:10:56Look for the special Chug-A-Mug displays in your area. Drink the beer that's number one
- 1:11:01in New York City and drink it from our little drink shaped rangle Chug-A-Mug. We think you'll
- 1:11:07agree that we must be doing something right. Right now we pause for station identification.
- 1:11:14This is a New York Mets baseball network. A ten-on-the-dial WGY is connected. Ralph
- 1:11:33Keiner along with Lindsay Nelson and Bob Murphy from Forts Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- 1:11:38The Mets leading 2-0 as the Pirates come up in the bottom half of the third. It'll be
- 1:11:44the job of the batting order for the Pirates. Bob Bailey, Bill Burton and Roberto Cameni.
- 1:11:49And on the mound for the Mets, Galen Cicco who has picked through two innings giving
- 1:11:54up no runs allowing one base hit. He walked two and struck out three in that period. Bailey
- 1:12:02struck out. He was gone looking at a slider first time. On his average it's 2-44. Right
- 1:12:09hand batter. Bailey playing the third base wearing number seven. And Cicco with his first
- 1:12:17pitch. The curve ball low at ball one. Now on the left field line in Forts Field at 3-65.
- 1:12:28Right field line 300 feet. Area there guarded by a high fence. Pitch back is low and it's
- 1:12:34ball two. Just a shade to the right of center field, 4-36. Just a shade to the left in center
- 1:12:43field over 450 feet. Left center 406 feet and right center 3-75. So this is a big ballpark.
- 1:12:52Totally the biggest park in the National League. Pitch back of the plate and it's in for a
- 1:12:57strike. Two balls, one strike. Out in the center field area, beautiful background of
- 1:13:04trees and vines. Back of that of Green Hill. So it's a good hitters background. Now Cicco
- 1:13:11misses low again and the count goes to three balls and one strike. Ballpark located in
- 1:13:16a very pleasant area. And Cicco now at 3-1 and the pitcher's bounce in the hole going
- 1:13:28over McMillan in the backhand and he has a long draw and he can't get it there in time.
- 1:13:33But what a play by Ross. Great backhand stop by McMillan. He got something on it. Made
- 1:13:40a great throw but Bailey beat it out by about a step. So the Pirates have a runner at first
- 1:13:46base in the bottom half of the third with no one out. Their second base hit off again
- 1:13:50and Cicco, the batter will be Bill Burton, left hand hitting center fielder. Bill grounded
- 1:14:03off at second base his first time up. His average is 3-0-1. And Cicco now in the set
- 1:14:13position. Now look at first base, the pitch of the plate. It's going on a miss. Fastball,
- 1:14:17he was late on it. Strike one. Burton, the second man in the batting order beyond deck
- 1:14:27batter is Roberto Comenzi. Met's lead, 2-0. And the pitch back to the plate is inside
- 1:14:39of the middle of the first base and Bailey dives back in safely. Close play and a good
- 1:14:44tag on the play by a crane ball after a good throw by Chris Ganadero. One ball, one strike
- 1:14:51count. No one out, bottom half of the third. Now Cicco look at first base and back again
- 1:15:05and the pitch is on the outside corner. Ball strike two. One and two on Bill Burton. Cicco
- 1:15:20looking for his first win this year. Both pitchers have not registered a victory. Cicco
- 1:15:25is on two and Joe Given is on four. Given the only man of the starting rotation not
- 1:15:33to win a game in the prior 12 game winning streak. Now the pitch back swung on him and
- 1:15:37strike three and Cicco with a fastball on the inside corner picks up his fourth strike
- 1:15:42count. Now your face Comenzi. Roberto Comenzi getting the hand as he comes up. He walks
- 1:15:55in the three one pitch his first time up. He's batting the 3-0-8. Against the Mets he
- 1:15:59has 11 for 19 in a four game series. The first time these two teams met. 5-79 average. So
- 1:16:09he's still at that average against the Mets so far this year. And Galen Cicco with his
- 1:16:16first pitch. It hard to the hole in the left field of base six. Now on the second base
- 1:16:21goes Bob Batey and he holds there as the field comes in from Ron Svoboda. So that put runners
- 1:16:27at first and second was going away and brings up Willie Starjow. Third hit for the Pirates.
- 1:16:42On Starjow the big home run man for the Pirates coming up. He has 10 home runs and 23 runs
- 1:16:48to get it in. He's batting at 2-39. First time up he ground it out hard to second base.
- 1:16:58Galen Cicco with runners at first and second. And his first pitch to Starjow is a ball pitch.
- 1:17:04Good play on it by Catazero. He moves out to his left to take it just off the ground.
- 1:17:10Ball almost getting by. It's ball one. Bob Shaw has been knocked out of the box by the
- 1:17:20Milwaukee's Rays in the bottom half of the third. No runs in that we have on our sheet
- 1:17:24here but in pitching Ron Herbaugh. James Had one-one going to the bottom half of the third.
- 1:17:31Swing at a low curve ball. One ball one strike. Ken Johnson pitching for Milwaukee. He was
- 1:17:40a Guaric bum. They used to natural about two weeks ago. Now Tom Parsons warming up again
- 1:17:47in the bullpen for the Mets. He was up in the second when the Pirates threatened on
- 1:17:53a base hit and a walk. But Cicco worked out of the jam. A change curve bounce to the dirt.
- 1:18:01It gets away and goes over to the Pirates. And the runners move up. Bob Bailey going
- 1:18:06to third base and Roberto Cammini on down to second on the wild pit. So the jam run
- 1:18:14at second base now and Galen Cicco in the middle of the jam. Two ball one strike in
- 1:18:37and Chris Gennazer off to talk it over with Cicco. In the stands today the owner of the
- 1:18:43Pittsburgh Pirates, the principal owner, Mr. John Galbraith. He was very instrumental
- 1:18:49in Galen Cicco playing at Ohio State on the football team. John a very strong benefactor
- 1:18:54of the Ohio State University. Galbraith makes his home in Columbus, Ohio and of course has
- 1:19:04businesses here in New York and many other places. He brought into the Pirates in 1947
- 1:19:13along with Frank McKinney of Indianapolis. Buying the ballclub from William Bensranger
- 1:19:21who had the ballclub for many years there in Pittsburgh. He in turn had the ballclub
- 1:19:26from Willie Dreyfus. Now the pitch as Darjeel takes outside misses and it's a ball three.
- 1:19:36Three balls one strike. And Galen Cicco a pitch away from having the bases loaded. On
- 1:19:47deck batter Don Glendinus. Now the three one delivery. It has taken Lone away ball four
- 1:19:56and that loads him up. Third walk by Galen Cicco. Base is now loaded and Don Glendinus
- 1:20:10a batter. Don ran it out the third his first time up. Bob Bailey at third base. Now Manny
- 1:20:21at second base. Darjeel at first. Glendinus batting at three thirty seven with three home
- 1:20:27runs and twenty seven runs battered in. That's leading by a score of two nothing with the
- 1:20:33fire at the end of the pitch. It is hit off the handle. Little fly ball back to the short
- 1:20:41top Roy McMillan. He backs up on the grass takes it and makes the play. Bill Cicco picks
- 1:20:48up his second out now. Runners holding all the way around and Cicco will take on Bill
- 1:20:53Mazurowski. Mazurowski walked his first time up on a three one pitch. He has an average
- 1:21:05of three sixteen with two home runs and twelve runs battered in. That's the lead of two nothing
- 1:21:18in jeopardy here with runners at first second and third. Two men away bottom half of the
- 1:21:23third. And Galen Cicco working hard in the mound. He has a sign and wind up at fifth.
- 1:21:30I picked almost getting away at zero one handed over the top of the head of Bill Mazurowski.
- 1:21:37It was a high curve ball flipping out and almost going on back to the trees. One ball
- 1:21:49no strikes. Infield set deep they have a play at any pace. Outfield shaded toward left field
- 1:21:58and fairly deep against the right hand batter. Wind is going in from left field here tonight.
- 1:22:06See the wind blows toward that field. It's been a pleasant cool day all day. Wind from
- 1:22:14that direction usually brings that type of weather. Now the pitch back to the play. The
- 1:22:19drive to left. It's in the air coming over Sopota. He has a chance for it and he makes
- 1:22:23the play. On Sopota about two shifts away from the foul line taking that line drive
- 1:22:28to retire the side. Throw the Mets get out of the jam as Galen Cicco leads three on.
- 1:22:34Two base hits. And the score at the end of three. The Mets do the power of nothing. Now
- 1:22:41word from Cool Filter King. Back for the fourth. The Mets in front do nothing as they come
- 1:22:48up against Joe Gibbons. First man up will be Charlie Smith. Charlie batting for the
- 1:22:53second time. He struck out of the curve ball his first time up. Right hand batter and Joe
- 1:22:58Gibbons a left hander with his first pitch. It's fouled off and out of play. Strike one.
- 1:23:07Charlie batting 274. He's been hitting well for the Mets. In fact was hitting extremely
- 1:23:12well and was sidelined because of a heavy call. Now back in the regular lineup for the
- 1:23:17first time in about five days. A one strike delivery. It has taken away and it's ball
- 1:23:22one. One ball one strike. Charlie with five home runs and 20 runs batted in. Mets score
- 1:23:34two runs in the third. They take the lead. They hold it at two nothing. Back to Charlie
- 1:23:38hit hard. In the hole. It's in the left field of base hit. Coming in is Willie Satchel the
- 1:23:42field of ball and Charlie Smith has it going again. He's on his first base. The Mets were
- 1:23:47no one away now have Ron Favota coming up. Hit number three off Joe Gibbons. It's all
- 1:23:58even at three at base with the Mets in front two nothing. Ron grounded out slowly back
- 1:24:04to the pitchers mound his first time up. Batting the 271 with 11 home runs and 28 runs batted
- 1:24:11in. And his first pitch is taken outside. Fastball missing just off the plate. One ball
- 1:24:16no strikes. Ron playing for the first time in this ball park. He has now seen them all.
- 1:24:29One ball no strikes. And the pitch is taken on a swing and fouled away. They count down
- 1:24:35one ball and one strike. Mets playing against Chicago and Pittsburgh in this trip. Playing
- 1:24:43in these ball parks for the first two times this year. For the first time to be more dramatically
- 1:24:51correct. Now the pitch back to Ron hit the right field. Roberto Camini moving to his
- 1:24:58left now waiting and he puts it away. One out. Back to first base Charlie Smith and
- 1:25:04brings up Jim Hickman. Jim Favota to right field his first time up. Batting at 167.
- 1:25:15Jim a three home runs and 11 runs batted in. He picked up eight runs batted in and the
- 1:25:20three home runs against the Cubs. In an abbreviated two game series. It was scheduled for four
- 1:25:26but the Mets tied one game which will have to be replayed. And another game rained out.
- 1:25:32Both the Cubs and the Pirates rained out yesterday. Hickman a right hand batter and Joe Gibbon
- 1:25:39with his first pitch. Blowing away at ball one. Fast ball away. Joe Gibbon's fast ball
- 1:25:45moves away for right hand batter. He throws a slider and curve. At the end of one the
- 1:25:54Dodgers nothing. St. Louis nothing. Colfax against Bob Berkey. Pitch back to Jim on the
- 1:26:01inside corner. Breaking pitch one ball one strike. Houston at the top of the first with
- 1:26:07no runs. Reds coming up. Not about going for the Astros and Gary O'Rico pitching for
- 1:26:16Cincinnati. Philadelphia and Chicago not scheduled. They don't have two days off in a row. One
- 1:26:24one pitch. A check on the swing but it's in there for strike two. Pitch in the inside
- 1:26:29corner to count down. One ball and two strikes. One man away at the top of the fourth. The
- 1:26:36Mets in front two nothing. This game the Percival five. Friday night a single game. Saturday
- 1:26:45afternoon a single game and a doubleheader on Sunday coming up. Pitch back to Jim Fowler.
- 1:26:50Pitch down low around the knees. One ball two strikes. They can't hold it. Tomorrow night
- 1:26:56it's going to be Jack Fisher pitching for the Mets against Bob Prince. Game time will be
- 1:27:04at 8.15 New York time. We'll be on the air at 8.10. One ball two strikes. Time to pitch
- 1:27:12back to Jim. Swung on and missed strike three. Joe Gibbons picks up another strikeout. That
- 1:27:19is his fourth in the ball game. He now has two away in the top of the fourth. The batter
- 1:27:24Roy McMillan now stepping in. Roy started the Mets rally in the third when they scored
- 1:27:31two runs when he got the first hit of the game for the Mets when he singled the center
- 1:27:35field. Roy with that base hit. Getting his average up to 260. He too has been hitting
- 1:27:46well for the Mets. Right hand batter. And Joe Gibbons with his first pitch. It's outside
- 1:27:54ball one. Roy going to a heavier bat and crediting that to the success that he's had of raising
- 1:28:02his average from under 200 up to 260. Roy using a bat of about 38 ounces now which is
- 1:28:09heavy. Most batters use bats around 30. In the old days they used them all around 40
- 1:28:16or over. Now to one open. Swung on and missed. Roy going for a pitch out of the way in the
- 1:28:23count now. One ball one strike. Donnie Smith still at third base for the Mets. He singled
- 1:28:27the lead off the inning but runs for a ball to fly out the right field and Jim Hickman
- 1:28:31struck out. One ball one strike on Roy McMillan. And the left hander now. Look at first and
- 1:28:42back to the plate. And the pitch foul off to the right side. The cam moves along the
- 1:28:46one and two. Only one game scheduled in the American League. Minnesota won that to increase
- 1:28:58the lead to one and a half games. Defending Boston four to three. It's past ball. Picked
- 1:29:02up his seventh win. He has not lost one this year. Billy Marmboquette the losing pitcher.
- 1:29:09Allison Olmgren in the second with the man on. Now the one two pitch. And down the right
- 1:29:14field line. Extra bases on this one. If it bounces off the wall cleanly he'll get second.
- 1:29:19Comenny holds him at first base even though he juggles the ball. And going over to third
- 1:29:23base is Charlie Smith. Aferto Comenny taking that line shot off the wall playing it perfectly
- 1:29:29and that was what stopped Roy McMillan. It was then juggle but Roy had already made up
- 1:29:33his mind not to go against the thrown arm right fielder. Roy with his second hit. The
- 1:29:38Mets now have runners at first and third with two away. And the batter coming up is Chris
- 1:29:43Canazaro. That ball had bounced away. Charlie Smith could have scored with no trouble. He
- 1:29:49hit the third base very easily. But Comenny who plays that ball well and who can throw
- 1:29:54as well as anything. Waited perfectly although he did juggle the ball. Chris Canazaro the
- 1:30:02batter. He was hit by a pitch ball his first time up. And the first pitch to him is low
- 1:30:06and inside for ball one. Down the right field line as we mentioned earlier at three hundred
- 1:30:14feet that ball hit against the wall on the fly about three hundred and twenty feet away.
- 1:30:19Caromed off to Comenny who was about fifty feet away from the wall right into his hand.
- 1:30:27Joe Given back to the plate and the pitch taken outside ball two. On deck batter is
- 1:30:32Galen Sisco. So Joe Given working carefully to Chris Canazaro. Matsonori Murray Covey
- 1:30:41has now relieved Ron Herbal for the time. All this action coming in the third. A two
- 1:30:53all pitch to Canazaro. Low for ball three and Joe Given now at three and all with
- 1:30:58the batters in first and third. That's the way two runs on four hits. All right now no
- 1:31:12runs on three hits. Three balls no strikes. Given sets again and look at first base and
- 1:31:17back to Canazaro. The slow and away ball four and that loads him up. Push down to second
- 1:31:23base and the walk to Canazaro. The first walk is by Joe Given. It's Raleigh McMillan holding
- 1:31:27the third base Johnny Smith in the battered game and Sisco. Eddie Matthews has hit a home
- 1:31:31run in the third for the Milwaukee Braves. They lead by at least a score of three to
- 1:31:36one and they're still batting. Two pitcher changes. Ron Herbal taking out he relieved
- 1:31:40Bob John that inning. Matsonori Murray Covey also in the ball game for the Jack.
- 1:32:01Bobby Sisco right hander has appeared in 13 previous ball games. He has won three and
- 1:32:11lost none in that time. That's the total of 18 and two thirds innings and he'll be working
- 1:32:19to Bobby Clouse. Bobby is 0 for 2. And the first pitch to Clouse is a curve ball low
- 1:32:33ball one. Bases are loaded for the Mets. Roy McMillan at third base. Chris Canazaro is
- 1:32:39at second base. Then game and Sisco at first. Mets leading by a score of three to nothing.
- 1:32:50And the fifth back to the plate is ball two. Two balls, no strikes. Joe Given credited
- 1:33:01with three and two thirds innings worth giving up three runs so far on five hits. In that
- 1:33:09time he struck out four and lost one. That's going two runs on two hits in the third off
- 1:33:15given. Have one run on three hits here in the fourth. Now the pitch back to Clouse.
- 1:33:23It's in there for a called strike. So the count goes to two balls and one strike. The
- 1:33:27Milwaukee Braves scored nine runs in the bottom half of the third against the San Francisco
- 1:33:31Giants. They lead by a score of ten to one. One home run. Eddie Matthews in the third
- 1:33:37with one on. Now the two one delivery. It's ball for ball three. And the count at three
- 1:33:43and one with Bobby Clouse batting. Bases loaded so Donnie Sisco has nowhere to put him. Bobby
- 1:33:55Clouse checking with Don Hefner as to whether or not he'll be hitting or taking the three
- 1:33:59and one. Now Sisco right hander into the windup. His pitch to the plate is taken in there for
- 1:34:06a called strike two. So a full count now at three and two with two men away. And the runners
- 1:34:11will be going. There's a big pitch in the ball game. Three balls two strikes. Two men
- 1:34:25out. Top of the fourth. Eddie Matthews runs three nothing. They have the bases loaded.
- 1:34:29Now the pitcher going into the stretch position so the runners can't start too soon. The pitch
- 1:34:33back to the plate. Low at four four and another run comes in. Forth game from third base.
- 1:34:38Roy McMullen. Chris Cannaville moving over to third base. Gavis Sisco down to second
- 1:34:43and on at first base with a run batted in. Here's Bobby Clouse. He took a close pitch.
- 1:34:48It was coached at the time slightly by Kim Pallieroni. But the Mets now lead by a score
- 1:34:53of four to nothing on the one. That run charged against Joe Gibbons. Don Swalwell now throwing
- 1:35:02in the bullpen for the fires. And the batter coming up for the Mets is Eddie Cranesville.
- 1:35:06And he looks low at ball one. And now out to take a look and to talk with Tommy Sisk.
- 1:35:1815 coach five king. Former Brooklyn Dodgers. And while he's out there talking we'll pause
- 1:35:28for station identification. This is the New York Mets baseball network. A ten of a dial
- 1:35:34WGY is connected. Ralph Kynel on with Lindsey Nelson and Bob Murphy from Forbes Field. And
- 1:35:46now the pitch back to the plate is all the way again ball two. Two balls no strikes.
- 1:36:00Two and oh on Eddie Cranesville. Ed Robyn a run on the third with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
- 1:36:05He's home for one of the games. And his next pitch is looked at for a called strike. It's
- 1:36:09got around the knees. McAd now at two and one. Cranesville batting at three thirty eight.
- 1:36:21Now into the set position in the windup now and there comes a pitch. It's hit into left
- 1:36:25center field. Cook left in a long run for Bill Burton. He can't get to it. A run scored.
- 1:36:30Kendall-Jerro is going for third. Galen Siskill trying from second base. He scores and going
- 1:36:34into second base with a double as Eddie Cranesville. And Bobby Foulkes moves to third. Go away.
- 1:36:39Take two outs. Two balls. Two strikes. Double by Eddie Cranesville driving in two more runs.
- 1:36:44And the Mets play five score six to nothing. Ball was a slicing looping line drive in the
- 1:36:52left center field. Bill Burton tried for it. He couldn't quite get to it. Ball dropping
- 1:36:56in and Cranesville had to slide in a second as a throw came in. But he beat the throw
- 1:37:00and the Mets have the lead by a score of six to nothing. The batter coming up is Joe Christopher.
- 1:37:15Joe is 0 for 2 in the game. And he takes the first pitch. It's low for ball one. Dug out
- 1:37:22by Pallieroni. One ball and no strikes. Cranesville now with three runs batted in the ball game.
- 1:37:29Leeds the club and runs batted in with 29. One more than Ron Sopota. And Joe Christopher
- 1:37:37at one and all. He's the ninth man to bat in this inning. And the next pitch is in there
- 1:37:43for a strike. One ball, one strike. All six runs in this game go against Joe Givens' record.
- 1:37:59One ball, one strike. And the right hander back again and a drive to left. Going back
- 1:38:05to left fielder. He can't get to it. It's over his head. Off of the wall. Going from
- 1:38:09second base is Bobby Klaus. And from second base is Eddie Greenpool. The Mets now lead
- 1:38:13on a long single. That throw was played off the wall in the second base by a score of eight
- 1:38:20to nothing. And Joe Christopher with a 370 foot single off the wall and left. A line shot
- 1:38:25over Willie Chargel that Chargel played it off the wall perfectly and fired it on in.
- 1:38:32So the Mets have batted around. And batting now for the second time, Johnny Smith is single
- 1:38:36to start the inning. And Joe Christopher has now extended his consecutive game streak to
- 1:38:4310. These two runs in on Joe's single going against the record of Tommy Siss. And the
- 1:38:52first pitch to Johnny Smith is inside ball one. Eight to nothing ball game is the Mets
- 1:39:07lead in the top of the fourth. And the pitch back to Johnny is put on a miss. The count
- 1:39:11evens at one and one. Now the right hander looks at first, comes back again to Smith
- 1:39:29and a line drive to center of base hit. Joe Christopher going to second base. Ball bobbles
- 1:39:34but picked up quickly by Bill Burton and Christopher holds it second. And Johnny Smith has had
- 1:39:39two hits in this inning. Two for two for Johnny Smith. Mets getting their sixth base hit and
- 1:39:43now out to the mound is Harry Walker and that will be all for Johnny Smith. Tommy came into
- 1:39:55the ball game to pitch to Bobby Krause with two men away. He pitched to four batters, gave
- 1:40:02up a walk, a double and two singles in that time. Two runs tied against his record. And
- 1:40:13Don Swal who was warming up the ball pen is coming into the ball game. Now throwing down
- 1:40:20into the ball pen is Wilbur Wood, a left hander. So Don Swal is coming in the ball game. The
- 1:40:26third picker used in this inning, Joe Gibbon with Johnny pitches. Joe pitched first to Johnny
- 1:40:33Smith, gave up a single then got two outs. Runner left at first base but then the Mets
- 1:40:38exploded for a single, a walk, a single and that was all for Joe Gibbon. Don Smith came
- 1:40:44in, he gave up a walk, a double and two singles. The Mets lead by a score of eight to nothing.
- 1:40:50They have runners at first and second, still two men away and the batter is Ron Favota.
- 1:40:54Officially Tommy says he did not pitch or get credit for any inning to work although
- 1:40:59against his record two runs and two hits in the walk. And again here's Lindsey Nelson
- 1:41:04to bring us up the date of the score. Alright Ralph in the National League it's all night
- 1:41:08action and at the end of three innings it's the Milwaukee Braves 10 and the San Francisco
- 1:41:12Giants 1. Bob Shaw starts with the Giants, Ron Hervel in the third and Masanori Muratami
- 1:41:17in the third. When the Braves got nine runs including a two run home run by Eddie Matthews,
- 1:41:22Ben Johnson pitching for the Milwaukee Braves. At the end of an inning and a half the Los
- 1:41:26Angeles Dodgers three and the San Luis Cardinals nothing. Sandy Colfax going against Bob Perky.
- 1:41:31At the end of an inning and a half the Houston Astros three and the Cincinnati Reds nothing.
- 1:41:36Don Nott of Wright going against Jerry Arrigo, Rusty Shaw at a three run homer in the second
- 1:41:41inning. Philadelphia and Chicago are not scheduled in the National League. The American League
- 1:41:45only one game scheduled today and that was an afternoon contest in which the league leading
- 1:41:49the Minnesota Twins defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-3. Camilo Pascual the winner with help
- 1:41:54from twice in the eighth, fifth down in the eighth and Nelson in the ninth. But Pascual
- 1:41:58and Alex won seven games and lost none. Billy Mombroo gets started and hits the loss for
- 1:42:03Boston with early relieving in the seventh inning. Bob Allison at a two run homer for
- 1:42:08Minnesota in the second inning. And right here the New York Mets are leading the Pittsburgh
- 1:42:13Pirates by a score of eight to nothing. And we are in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 1:42:19First game of a five game set. The Pittsburgh Pirates having won 12 games in a row and with
- 1:42:23Ryan Svoboda coming up coming back in here around town. Okay Lindsey, John Svoboda the
- 1:42:28pitch against Ron Svoboda. He has appeared in eight previous ballgames, worked 17 innings.
- 1:42:33He has an earned run average of 4.76 per nine innings. And he has a record of two and two.
- 1:42:41John a right hander and Ron Svoboda right hand batter. Rod in his innings right out
- 1:42:45the right field. He is 0 for 2 in the game. Runners at first and second two away and the
- 1:42:52pitch to Svoboda is high and it's ball one. One ball no strikes. Ron the eleventh man
- 1:42:58to bat here is the Mets have scored a total of six runs on six hits. One ball no strikes.
- 1:43:10And Svoboda back to the plate. The pitch taken at the knees on the inside corner. One ball
- 1:43:14and one strike. Mets have not won a ballgame from the Pirates this year. The Pirates swept
- 1:43:21the series in New York when they played winning four. Now Svoboda in the set position has
- 1:43:33won one delivery. He has flung on and fouled off. That makes it a one two count on Ron
- 1:43:38Svoboda. Ron has his man's right here. One of his many now. Up in the tap deck the third
- 1:43:44deck here in Forbes field. A batter which says O.A.I. loves Ron Svoboda. Now this could
- 1:43:51be Ron's country around here. One ball two strikes. John Swal working and the pitch back
- 1:43:59to the plate is flung on and fouled off the end of the bat. Another count of six one and
- 1:44:03two. Swal going to his side on pitch and Ron getting just a piece of the end of the bat
- 1:44:07on the ball. Mets leading by a score of eight and up against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Not
- 1:44:17time called as the ball gets away in the bullpen down the right field line. Ron Lockett losing
- 1:44:23up in the bullpen for the Mets. It's been a long inning. And the pitch back to the plate.
- 1:44:32A second of swing in time. A good look at it by down in the count now two and two. Two
- 1:44:53balls two strikes. And Swal back to the plate. A swing and a miss strike three and that ends
- 1:45:03the inning. Up to the inning the Mets add to their lead. They've scored six runs on six
- 1:45:08hits there with two walks. Two men left on base. And the score at the end of three and
- 1:45:13a half innings the Mets eighth to Pittsburgh Pirates nothing. Bottom half of the fourth
- 1:45:18inning the Mets leading by a score of eight to nothing. Going six runs from the top of
- 1:45:23the fourth. Their biggest inning of the year five times now they have scored six runs and
- 1:45:28won anything. On the mat for the Mets with the big lead is Gannon Zisco. Gannon looking
- 1:45:33for his first win. He's contributed to the Mets cause with two singles and two runs batted
- 1:45:38in. Gannon also has held the Pirates to no runs and three hits. He has struck out four
- 1:45:43and walked three and he'll be pitching to Andre Rogers who had a single his first time up
- 1:45:46in a high curve. Rogers a right hand batter and the first pitch is hit off the hands looped
- 1:45:52toward right field going back Bobby Clough. He can't get to it. It drops in back of him
- 1:45:56and the Pirates have a runner first base with no one out and their fourth hit. Rogers batting
- 1:46:06at three fifty two before the base hit. So he's headed on a couple more points. The batter
- 1:46:11is Jim Valerone who struck out looking at a curve his first time up. Jim batting two
- 1:46:16thirty. And the first pitch to the catcher is a called strike strike one. Jose Fagan
- 1:46:30is in the on deck circle. The pitcher is due up next to Jose who was acquired from San
- 1:46:35Francisco for Scofield. He'll be batting for the first time against the Mets in a Pirate
- 1:46:44uniform. A change up and it's fouled down the dirt. Now moving to oh and two on the catcher
- 1:46:50Valerone. Ball bounced up and got the home plate umpire and for a while there Candice
- 1:46:57Airol didn't know about. Now he's getting some assistance as Chris holds on to him as
- 1:47:02he's doubled over. Coming down from first base Al Bollock and also Danny Whelan the
- 1:47:06trainer of the Pirates coming out. Ball bounced down the dirt and bounced up. And now Mel
- 1:47:13Steiner doubled over in apparent pain. Dan Landis walking in along with Augie Donatelli
- 1:47:20as they all had their sympathy. Say why don't you come to the Rango Talent Quest every Friday
- 1:47:28at 8 p.m. at the World's Fair. Amateur vocal and instrumental groups will compete for prizes
- 1:47:33in the singer ball. Mission is free so you can go to the show and enjoy yourself. Maybe
- 1:47:39see some new young talent discovered. No time call but Mel Steiner waving off everyone and
- 1:47:48he's okay. It's a man here. Probably a good sized crowd in Phelpsville but not nightly
- 1:47:54good all day. Barrett came into the ninth game with a 12 game winning streak and the
- 1:47:59box office has picked up. John scored two runs to the top of the fourth to cut Milwaukee's
- 1:48:11lead now to 10 to 3. Milwaukee scored nine runs in the bottom half of the third. Two
- 1:48:17strike count on Jim Pallieroni. Time is in. A runner at first base. A curve ball hit foul.
- 1:48:22Cisco coming in with a change curve ball. The ball pulled down the left field line and
- 1:48:26bounced against the stands and went out in the left field and picked up by Ron Svoboda.
- 1:48:42Jim and Cisco making their fourth strike for the Mets. Enjoying at this point an eight
- 1:48:52game eight run lead. And the right hander now back to the play and the pitch foul off
- 1:48:56the play. Straight back at home plate and count stays at O and 2. Barrett had a record
- 1:49:14of nine and 24 before they started a 12 game winning streak. They are now 21 and 24. Again
- 1:49:20a change up. It's in the dirt dug out by Cannazero. Fake throw to first base and Rogers back to
- 1:49:24the back. Mets have a record of 18 wins and 29 losses. There are only two wins. Back to
- 1:49:36the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs. One ball two strikes. Cisco now sets
- 1:49:45again. His pitch curve ball bounced slowly towards short. Coming over Roy McMillan. He's
- 1:49:49up with it. He throws to Bobby Clouse covering at second base for the fourth there. And exchanging
- 1:49:54at first base is Jim Valeroni on the out. That'll bring up Jose Fagan. Jose fighting
- 1:50:15for John Schwalb out in a 2-0-5. We'll see another pitch in the ball game. It'll be left
- 1:50:19hander Wilbur Woods. Fourth pitcher to be used by the Pirates. He'll come in at the top of
- 1:50:23the fifth. They got a right hand batter. Off runner at first base. And a hard swing at
- 1:50:37the first pitch. Strike one. Mets leading 8-0. Mets have a modest two game winning streak
- 1:50:46going for them. One strike count on Fagan. And the next delivery a curve ball. Swing and
- 1:51:06a miss. Strike two. Fagan pulled completely on a big rolling curve. It was sort of a surprise
- 1:51:12when the Giants traded Fagan off because there was never an indication in any previous years
- 1:51:16that they were thinking about another shortstop. Taking up Schofield from Pittsburgh was not
- 1:51:26too much of a surprise because Schofield was never really considered a strong contender
- 1:51:31for the shortstop position. They liked him but he had not measured up. Now the pitch
- 1:51:39back to the plate. One ball, two strikes. Pitch low and away. And a good play by Ken
- 1:51:43O'Zerro to get out in front and keep the ball from going by. Schofield was scheduled to
- 1:51:48take over and be the regular shortstop when Dick Grode was traded away. And of course
- 1:51:53they must have felt very highly about Schofield when they got rid of Grode. He never did quite
- 1:51:58measure up although with the Giants now he's going like a house of fire. One, two pitch
- 1:52:07just outside. A slider missing off the outside corner to count it two and two. The Pirates
- 1:52:19have been using three shortstops and dispersing their men getting good results. Andre Rogers
- 1:52:25has been the top man because his bat has been red hot. Their number one fielding shortstop
- 1:52:30is Gene Alley. He's batting at 260. Now a ground ball hit hard to short. Taken on a
- 1:52:38short hop by Roy McMillan. The throw to second base for the fourth play is in time on the
- 1:52:43first base for a double play. And the Mets with their 48 double play to retire the side.
- 1:52:486-4-3. No runs, one hit, no errors and no one left on. And the score at the end of four,
- 1:52:55the Mets eight, the Pittsburgh Pirates nothing. And now once again Lindsay Nelson.
- 1:53:05All right Ralph, you know during the brief history of the Mets there have been many fabulous

- 1:53:39you'd like to get a copy of the Let's Go Mets record album just send three dollars to Mets
- 1:53:46album J Stadium Flushing, New York. Wilbur Wood is the pitcher in the ball game now for
- 1:54:03the Pittsburgh Pirates. He's a left-hander and he is the fourth Pirate pitcher of this
- 1:54:22ball game. Joe Gibbons started is the pitcher of record. Gibbons hits three and two thirds,
- 1:54:29gave up six runs on five hits. This came in, faced four batters, was charged with two runs
- 1:54:35and allowing three hits. Don Schwalp pitched a third of an inning, he retired one man and
- 1:54:41was removed from the pinch hitter and now it's left-hander Wilbur Wood. And Jim Hickman
- 1:55:04steps in now to lead off of the Mets. Jim has flied to right and struck out swinging
- 1:55:11so far in this ball game. Wood looks for his side and Jim Pagliarone and here's the pitch.
- 1:55:17Fung on, hit on the ground to third base, second deep by Bob Bailey, a long throw but
- 1:55:22a clean done and in time and Hickman is out. One away here in the top half of the fifth
- 1:55:27inning and Roy McMullin is the batter. Roy is two for two tonight. Wilbur Wood is making
- 1:55:36his eleventh game appearance. He has no one or loss record. He has pitched a total of
- 1:55:45seventeen innings in which he's allowed four runs, three of them earned. And the pitch
- 1:55:53to Matt is in there for a cause strike. Wilbur Wood has an earned run average of 1.58. He
- 1:56:01has struck out eighth, he has walked eleventh. One away, nobody on base. The Mets are leading
- 1:56:10their score of eighth to nothing. Left-hander Wood pitches low for a ball. One and one, the
- 1:56:24count's a nine. Wood with a one-one delivery and admits he's outside for a ball. He goes
- 1:56:34behind two and one. St. Louis Cardinals have scored five runs off Sandy Kofax in the bottom
- 1:56:42half of the second inning. So at the end of two it is the Dodgers three and the Cardinals
- 1:56:47five. Here's a swing and a fly ball to right field. Going back is Clemente. He has it lined
- 1:56:55up. He's there and he makes the catch. Ball is well hit by McMullin to right. Clemente
- 1:57:00gets a good jump out there. Two away, nobody on base and Chris Cannadaro is coming up.
- 1:57:05He's been hit by a pitch ball and walks. Right-hand batter. Tug McGraw is throwing in the Matt
- 1:57:16bullpen. Left-hander number 45, Tug McGraw. Suddenly Larry Miller has reported he's going
- 1:57:25to side number 35. Here's a pitch. It's in there for a called strike. We're in the top
- 1:57:35half of the fifth inning of the first game of a five-game series here at Forbes Field
- 1:57:40in Pittsburgh. The pitch to Cannadaro, breaking ball low. It's in the dirt. One and one. Forbes
- 1:57:54Field is equipped with the only automatic field cover in the National League. It extends
- 1:58:00from home plate up the third base line out to short left field. Here's a swing and a
- 1:58:05foul ball back up first. A check swing and line just foul back up first base. The Milwaukee
- 1:58:12Braves were the first in the National League to install an automatic field cover, but it
- 1:58:17never did really work out there and they finally just dug it up and covered the trench over
- 1:58:22and filled it in. So there's just no sign of it left at County Stadium, but the one
- 1:58:26here at Forbes Field does work. Here's a breaking ball that goes high. And so there is no other
- 1:58:34field covering here. For a year or two they used to keep the tarp rolled up around handy
- 1:58:40just in case, but the automatic field cover works so well they dispensed with that. Two-two
- 1:58:44pitch. Breaking ball swung on. In the air a high fly ball to the right. Clemente dribbles
- 1:58:48back. He's underneath and waiting and Roberto makes the catch. So Wood gets the side in
- 1:58:53order here at the top of the fifth. Wood no runs, no hits, no runs, no left. Scores the
- 1:58:58end of four and a half innings. Here's the mess eight and the Pirates nothing. Here at
- 1:59:07Forbes Field the Pittsburgh Pirates will be coming up and Bob Bailey will be up to lead
- 1:59:12off in the bottom half of the fifth. We're keeping you posted on the progress of American
- 1:59:19astronauts White and Mcdivitt. And they are now one hour into their seventh orbit. They
- 1:59:25have 55 more of it to go. And White who has been asleep his past hour is about to relieve
- 1:59:33Mcdivitt as the pilot so that Mcdivitt can get some sleep now. And in something like
- 1:59:3820 minutes they'll pass the 10 hour mark of this particular project. Right here the Mets
- 1:59:47are leading. The Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of eight to nothing. Galen Sisco on the mound
- 1:59:53for the Mets. Bailey is one for two. He's a right hand batter. Sisco deals a pitch that
- 2:00:02goes high up of all one. Pirates were scheduled to have played the Philadelphia Phillies here
- 2:00:12last night and they were rained out. Mets were scheduled to have played the Cubs in Chicago
- 2:00:16yesterday and they were rained out. The pitch went on and hit on the ground foul back at
- 2:00:22third on down and to left field west of Obota now. It was, it was, it was actually off the
- 2:00:29foot of Mark's Policemen down there and Fulvoda has retrieved it. One and one to count to
- 2:00:37lead off man Bob Bailey of the Pirates who was signed originally for a bonus estimated
- 2:00:42at $175,000. Here's the pitch low. Two and one. Bill Burton is waiting on deck. Dodgers
- 2:01:02did not score in the top of the third so at the end of two and a half it's Cardinals five
- 2:01:07and the Dodgers three. Here's a swing and a drive foul down across the Mets both then
- 2:01:12out of play in the left field corner. Two and two. Well when the Dodgers picked up three
- 2:01:20runs for Sandy Kopacz you might have thought he'd be in pretty good shape but the Cardinals
- 2:01:25came back to get five off Kopacz and take the lead. Sisco looks in to get a side. Chris
- 2:01:35is going to counter zero and the two-two delivery swung on. Hit deep to center and right there
- 2:01:40Jim Hickman and he makes the catch. There's a lot of room in center field and Forbes field.
- 2:01:45One away and I bring up Bill Burton who has rolled those acres out there for a number
- 2:01:51of years so very well. He's nothing but two tonight. He has grounded out second. The person
- 2:01:56struck out swinging. Burton started out in the Yankee system, went to the Cardinals and
- 2:02:05the deal is brought in a slaughter through the Yankees. Here's a swing and a ground ball
- 2:02:11to first. It is a fair ball taken by Cranesville behind the bag. He jogs over to make the play
- 2:02:15unassisted. Two away and Roberto Clemente is coming up now. He has walked and guarded
- 2:02:21out. Clemente was married last November. Batting champion of the National League. He is twice
- 2:02:31all that out. Galen Sisco with the pitch to the right hand batter. It's bunned up into
- 2:02:47the air foul over right hand to the med dugout. He was studying at Charlie Smith playing
- 2:02:54a deep third base and he was trying to bun his way out. Strike one to Clemente. Cardinals
- 2:03:07have picked up another run off Sandy Copac. Here's the pitch and it's just for a call
- 2:03:13strike. Ken Boyer of the Cardinals has homeward off Copac to make it 6-3. Two strike deliveries
- 2:03:25one run and foul back. Upstairs and out of play. Got hold of two strikes. Come up to
- 2:03:34cool for the most refreshing coolness you can get in any cigarette. Smoke cool filter
- 2:03:43king. Here's the swing and the ground ball up to first base line. Canadero recovers.
- 2:03:56Fires out in time. A little number and Chris got out there and heard a pass run and threw
- 2:04:04out the speedy Roberto Clemente. The side's out in order. No runs, no hits, no is not
- 2:04:07left to score. At the end of five is the Mets eighth and the Pirates nothing. Well, Roy
- 2:04:14McMillan's had a couple of base hits in this game. He has been going great in his usual.
- 2:04:18He turns in a spark through two. He should tell you that the Mets play and you can find
- 2:04:22out all about Roy McMillan and all the other Mets in the brand new revised 1965 Mets yearbook.
- 2:04:28It has all the up to date facts and figures on the Mets plus 258 action photographs. As
- 2:04:33you know, from time to time player personnel changes during the course of the season and
- 2:04:38for that particular reason, the yearbook is updated from time to time with revised editions
- 2:04:44and the first revised edition is now available with information on new Mets such as Chuck
- 2:04:49Miller who came to the Mets from the San Francisco Giants. There's a special section on Yogi
- 2:04:54Burrow and one on Warren Spahn, plenty of pictures of them. So to get the new 1965 Mets yearbook
- 2:05:00send 50 cents to Mets yearbook Shea Stadium Flushing, New York. Repeating the address
- 2:05:05Mets yearbook Shea Stadium Flushing, New York. We'd like to call your attention too to an
- 2:05:11event coming up at Shea Stadium Friday, July 9th will be date night at Shea Stadium when
- 2:05:16the Mets meet the Houston Astros. There'll be Dixieland bands and other entertainments.
- 2:05:21A Y board date accompanied by a mail escort will be admitted to the general admission area
- 2:05:25for 50 cents. Right now we've got a station identification. This is the New York Mets
- 2:05:30may phone at work. A gentleman WGY is connected. This is Lindsay Nelson with Bob Murphy and
- 2:05:48Ralph Keiner at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh and Gail and Cisco is up for the Mets. It
- 2:05:53is low inside the ball when Cisco has had two big hits in this game. The Mets is driving
- 2:05:58the run each time and it keeps the rally alive. Wilbur Woods the fourth pirate pitcher of the
- 2:06:08evening is on the mound. That pitcher is in for a call striking its one and one to Cisco.
- 2:06:16We're in the top half of the sixth inning. And the one one delivery. Slow breaking ball
- 2:06:28low and it's two and one. The same umpiring crew is working this game that worked the
- 2:06:34Mets series in Chicago. Umpires came on over last night. Here's a two one delivery and
- 2:06:42the Mets are on a high hopper towards second. Mazurowski charges gets rid of it in a hurry
- 2:06:46in time and Cisco grounds five second to first. That'll bring up Bobby Klout. Bobby is nothing
- 2:06:54for two but he hung in there to draw a walk. Where's the bases loaded and the top of the
- 2:07:00second inning. And of course gotta run better than. Here's the pitch to Klout and it's low
- 2:07:24and it's a one and one. Klout's back at second base tonight for the Mets with Charlie Smith
- 2:07:33back in the lineup at third. There's a one oh pitch and it's in there for a call strike.
- 2:07:40One and one. Ed Craneville waiting around on deck. Wilbur Woods with a one one delivery
- 2:07:52of breaking ball. Swung out and missed. It's one and two. We'll be on the air tomorrow
- 2:08:00night at eight ten p.m. with radio and television coverage of the second game of this series.
- 2:08:07Here's a one two pitch. It's in the dirt. Bounds off the arm of Jim Pagliarone. He retrieves
- 2:08:13it. Count levels at two two. Pagliarone came with Don Schwal. Two of the parrots from Boston
- 2:08:29in the deal that sent pitcher Jack LeMay back first baseman Dick Stewart to Boston. Here's
- 2:08:33a swing and a foul ball back and out of play. Two two count. And the two two deliveries.
- 2:08:55A little never foul coming back out of play. Count holds at two two. Well I think that
- 2:09:05anyone who was around here in 1960 will never forget the closing days of the National League
- 2:09:11campaign and the final day of the World Series here in 1960 when the parrots won the World
- 2:09:18Championship. Here's a two two pitch. And it's taking a high way. Count runs full at
- 2:09:26three and two. It was one of the wildest scenes imaginable around here when the parrots clinched
- 2:09:33the championship and when they won the World Championship. Here's a playoff. Pitch long
- 2:09:38on as a high pop foul back a third. Bailey's over at the barrier and this one's going in
- 2:09:44the seats out of play. Count holds full at three and two. One man out nobody on base
- 2:09:56for the Mets batting in the top half of the sixth inning. There's one thing about the
- 2:10:01National League in recent seasons that excitement of winning the championship and playing in
- 2:10:07the World Series has been sort of spread around. The parrots won it in 60 Cincinnati in 61.
- 2:10:17Giants in 62. Dodgers in 63. Here's a swing and a ground ball going through the hole in
- 2:10:23the left field for a base hit for Bobby Clouse. Willie Stajula up with it plays it's act.
- 2:10:31Mets have a base run over the one man out and Ed Crane is the batter. Ed is not in three
- 2:10:36runs. He had a big double and the six run rally in the top of the fourth and he had
- 2:10:41a sacrifice by the Sunniston drive and a run in the third. He is one for two officially.
- 2:10:52Right now Crane Poole is hitting 342 for the seat. The left hander deals a pitch long on
- 2:10:57it on the ground to Clint Denham at first. He goes across to Rogers for one to throw
- 2:11:01back and not in time. That's Crane Poole beats the relay. Woods took the relay there. He
- 2:11:08moved over to take the throw after Clint Denham had gone for the ball and played it to Rogers
- 2:11:12for the force. Two away. Joe Christopher coming up. The Mets are leading by a score of eight
- 2:11:17to nothing. Christopher had a single to drive in two runs in the sixth inning fourth. He's
- 2:11:30one for three. Joe has a hitting streak going now. Out ten consecutive games. Wood checks
- 2:11:45the runner first. Here's the pitch long on it and land over the head of Maseratski second
- 2:11:49into right field and Clemente comes up with the ball underhanded back and Crane Poole
- 2:11:55second. Christopher with his second hit of the night and that will bring up Charlie Smith.
- 2:12:04Charlie coming back into the line up tonight is two for three. He had been sidelined with
- 2:12:11an upper respiratory infection. Two men out, two men on. The Mets leading by a score of
- 2:12:25eight to nothing in the top half of the sixth inning at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Wilbur
- 2:12:36Wood is up and set. Runner's lead first and second. Here's the pitch to Charlie. Swung
- 2:12:41out in mids for strike one. Charlie Smith has a season's batting average right now of
- 2:12:49286. And he is hitting clean up tonight and manages singles batting order. There's a
- 2:13:04breaking ball that's in there for a called strike. A two strike catcher Smith. Rons for
- 2:13:18the Mets. Wood looks for a sign as runners lead first and second. Two strike delivery
- 2:13:34and it's a check swing pop out toward the bag at second and then D. Rogers makes the
- 2:13:39catch. So the side is out with no runs. Two is in or two left and the score at the end
- 2:13:45of five and a half is the Mets eight and the Parrots nothing. Here at Forbes Field tonight
- 2:13:55the official paid attendance is 9,169. Ladies, 2,070 and total in the ballpark 11,239. We'll
- 2:14:08be going to the bottom half of the sixth inning and Willie Stargell will be up to lead off
- 2:14:12for the Pittsburgh Parrots. The Houston Astros have scored another run in the fourth inning.
- 2:14:18So going to the bottom of the fourth it is Houston seven and Cincinnati nothing. A regal
- 2:14:24out of the ball game. Saturas in the fourth inning. For Cincinnati, Don Nottabart still
- 2:14:30pitching for the Houston Astros. Rusty Saab at a three run homer in the second inning
- 2:14:34for Houston. Stargell has grounded out and walked so far tonight. Big left hand batter.
- 2:14:40This goes pitch for on and lined. The second where it is off the webbing of the glove of
- 2:14:48Plowett on out of the right field for a paid hit. It was a line shot and Plowett went up
- 2:14:53into the air. The try just to smear it but he couldn't flag and went down. It was a shot.
- 2:15:01Went on out of the right where it was picked up by Christopher and played back in and that's
- 2:15:05when Don Nott is up. That's when Don Nott is grounded out and off that so far.
- 2:15:15This goes off the stretch and the pitch to the right hand batter is inside for a ball.
- 2:15:23The Mets are leading by a score of eight to nothing in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 2:15:27Stargell leads it first. Crane Poole playing behind the runner. Here's a pitch a breaking
- 2:15:42ball low. This goes behind to and on out of Don Glenn Dunnett. Let's play him straight
- 2:15:53and he has excellent speed. This goes touch for the two-oh delivery. On and on the ground.
- 2:16:07The shortstop. They come on over to cross for one. The relay to first and he's safe.
- 2:16:11That's when Don Nott beats the relay with his good speed. First they got the ball. This
- 2:16:17goes touch for the two-oh delivery. On and on the ground. The shortstop. They come on
- 2:16:23over to cross for one. The relay to first and he's safe. That's when Don Nott beats the
- 2:16:26relay with his good speed. First they got the lead man Willie Stargell as he went McClurn
- 2:16:31DeClause one away and Bill Mandarocki is getting up. He has walked and lined out to left field
- 2:16:36so far. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third has lined the ball to left field
- 2:16:46but Ron Favota at good position and blanked it down to the off. This goes off the stretch
- 2:16:58to the right hand batter. On the ground is short. They get there by macking over to cross
- 2:17:03for one. The throw to first this time a double play. It goes six four three and the side
- 2:17:09is on with no runs one. It's a net eight and the par is nothing. In the seventh inning
- 2:17:26the New York Mets have Ron Favota leading off against left-hander Wilbur Woods. Wilbur
- 2:17:32took over for Pittsburgh back in the fifth inning. He's worked two innings a lot. No runs
- 2:17:37in the first inning. He's got a nice run up to his. Here's the pitcher Ron a swing and
- 2:17:41a fastball strike one. Ron has bounced out of the mound lined to right hand been struck
- 2:17:46out nothing for three. The Mets have eight runs on ten base hits. A curve of swing and
- 2:17:55a miss strike two on Favota. Probably the key RBI's of the game to date. The two driven
- 2:18:03in by Galen Susco. He drove in the first run. The bases loaded two men down. He drove in
- 2:18:15the second to the third run. Way inside Ron had to bail out in a hurry. They're double
- 2:18:22checking. Actually Galen drove in the first run with runners on second and third. Nobody
- 2:18:27had they pulled the infield down and he's single. Drainful sacrifice fly drove in the
- 2:18:33second run. A towering infield pop fly by the mound. Coming in is Don Clendenin called
- 2:18:39out by Bailey on third base when Bailey grabs it. Middle way between home plate and the pitcher's
- 2:18:44mound. But the biggest hit of the mall for Galen came in the sixth run fourth inning.
- 2:18:54The Mets had the bases loaded. There were two men away. Galen Susco single to right.
- 2:19:01For his second hit in the second RBI that made it three nothing and the Mets went on
- 2:19:05to score five more runs. They got all six runs in the fourth inning after two were down.
- 2:19:11Now Jim Heckman batting against Wood as he whacks it foul back upstairs and out of play.
- 2:19:19For Wood young left hander from Belmont, Massachusetts was originally given a large bonus to down
- 2:19:24with the Red Sox. Fenway Park and Boston a very tough ballpark for a left hander unless
- 2:19:31you're overpowering or have a great fangirl. Here's the pitch on the way whacked foul as
- 2:19:37Hefner had to get out of the way in a hurry. Wilbur had a good minor league record. He
- 2:19:43won 15 games out of Seattle last year with the Red Sox in that field. But he had to count
- 2:19:48his stuff for a small ballpark and an inviting target for right hand hitters. Pittsburgh
- 2:19:53on the other hand has a big ballpark for a pitcher and particularly big for the right
- 2:19:57hand hitters they felt Wilbur Wood could help them a great deal. Inside letter high. One
- 2:20:07ball and two strikes on Jim Heckman were in the seventh. A one two delivery. Check swing
- 2:20:22and a foul ball drifting back toward the visiting dugout. Roy McMillan is the on deck batter
- 2:20:42that's sitting in the visiting seventh. A swing and a miss he got him on a big curveball.
- 2:20:48Strike out for Wilbur Wood. His first as he took over in relief. Now there are two away
- 2:20:58on the batter is Roy McMillan. Roy has two hits and two times at bat. Two hits and three
- 2:21:15times at bat. They got him out the last time up. And the curve is over for a call strike.
- 2:21:21In the fourth inning he's singled a right field with two men. In the fourth inning he's
- 2:21:27singled a right field with two men down and Charlie Smith on first. Charlie went around
- 2:21:31to third. Canazaro walked and loaded the bases and Francisco singled in a run. Off the outside
- 2:21:37corner one ball and one strike. Fitching one and one. A ground ball hit toward the hole
- 2:21:52running to his left side is Maserowski. He comes up through to Clinton and in time on
- 2:21:57the side is up. Three up and three down in the visiting seventh inning and the score
- 2:22:07at the end of the six and a half inning. The New York Mets eight and the Pittsburgh Pirates
- 2:22:11nothing. Last half of the seventh inning the Bucks coming up against Galen Fisco. Andy
- 2:22:24Rogers will be leading off and Rogers has two hits and two times at bat. He has two
- 2:22:30of the five given up by Galen Fisco. So Rogers is now hitting 364. Rogers came to the Pittsburgh
- 2:22:45Pirates in the winter in a deal with Chicago in which Pittsburgh gave up a rookie short
- 2:22:50stop Roberto Peña and quite a bit of money. Here's the wind up and the pitch a drive
- 2:22:59hit deep toward left center field. Rob Swabota won't be able to reach it. This is an extra
- 2:23:04base hit rolling back toward the wall and Rogers comes in the second standing up with
- 2:23:09his third into the game. Lead off double in the seventh inning by Rogers. That'll bring
- 2:23:22up Jim Pagliarone and the Pittsburgh catcher has been struck out. He's been a force play.
- 2:23:30Warm up action and the Pirate bullpen. Andy getting to the very water will go to a pinch
- 2:23:34batter. Andy Mota has come out on deck to hit the Welber Woods and the curve is over.
- 2:23:39It's Frank Wundell. Frank Crappana left hander is warming. If he comes in he'll be the third
- 2:23:51south ball that Harry Walker has used tonight. Now the pitch back. Galen low and inside.
- 2:23:59One ball one strike to untie Yaroni. Bag a right hand batter and he'll pull the ball.
- 2:24:09Throw the Mets play him around toward left of the outfield. Breaking ball outside is
- 2:24:20low. Two balls to the strike. Larry Miller is now loosening up for the New York Mets.
- 2:24:29Larry joined the ball club in Pittsburgh. Larry had one-sixth and lost only one of the
- 2:24:372.5 ERA at Buffalo. Did he wrap that or take it his place on the Buffalo pitching staff?
- 2:24:482-1 delivery. Outside ball three. Galen is behind now three and one on value running.
- 2:25:11Galen slowing himself down. This is the longest stretch that Cisco has worked this year. 3-1
- 2:25:18delivery. Bounce foul. He went after it. It's back toward the visiting dugout behind third.
- 2:25:24So now the string is at three and two. Outfielder Manimoto is out of the undocked circle. He'll
- 2:25:43be batting for pitcher Wilbur Wood. The Mets eight and the parents seven were in the last
- 2:25:50two to seven. The three-two is popped high in the air. Back toward the backstop. Cannavero
- 2:25:56hoping for a play. Half rim and grab. So Pagliarone on three and two fouls out to Cannavero.
- 2:26:13Now Manimoto right hand batter will be hitting against Galen Cisco with one out and one on.
- 2:26:24Mani has been platooning in center field with Bill Burton. Burton playing against the right
- 2:26:31hand pitcher. Manimoto is pitching and Manimoto against the left handers. Manimoto is the
- 2:26:50second pinch hitter that Harry Walker has felt on. He used Jose Pagan in the fourth
- 2:26:56inning and Jose hit into a double play. Pitch by Galen Cisco. Baltimore chop off the plate.
- 2:27:05Hit toward second. Grabbed by Clouse. He throws just in time to get him. Moving on to third.
- 2:27:11Goes Andy Rogers. Bobby had to hurry. That ball bounced off on plate and it went out
- 2:27:26toward second. Lead off batter Bob Bailey has one hit in three times at bat. He beat
- 2:27:28out a base hit to deep shortstop back in the third inning. And until Andy Rogers tossed
- 2:27:39over to third while Manimoto was being thrown out Bailey has been the only pirate runner
- 2:27:43as far as third base. Breaking ball over strike one. Galen trying to win his first victory
- 2:28:00over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He tried to punt and he missed to take the third save and it
- 2:28:06was close. Rogers was almost picked off. Canozero whipping the ball to Charlie Smith. Bailey
- 2:28:16trying to punt for a base hit and get a run home but he missed on the bun and temp. Now
- 2:28:33Galen out of his wind up here with a pitch low and outside one and two. Will be on the
- 2:28:43air at 810 tomorrow night with a second of this five game series. Saturday afternoon
- 2:28:49the game will be on at 130. And on Sunday the double header at 1pm. Now Fusco delivers
- 2:29:07one and two outside at low. Chris digging it out of the dirt. It's two balls and two
- 2:29:11strikes. Bobby Clouse playing almost behind second against full hitter Bob Bailey. Andy
- 2:29:22Rogers on third with two men down. Pitching two and two. Outside ball three and the string
- 2:29:42out four. Allows no runs and a six base hit. This has been Galen's most impressive pitching
- 2:29:52performance and this is the longest stretch he has worked. Ball four he lost it. So that
- 2:30:05is the fourth walk surrendered by Fusco. Now the Bucs have runners at first and third.
- 2:30:10Two men down and Burton coming up. Burton has bounced to second and been struck out
- 2:30:15and bounced to first nothing for three. The veteran outfielder hitting at 297. Left hand
- 2:30:25hitter against right hand pitcher. Here's the pitch to him a drive in the air to center
- 2:30:36field drifting back at Jim Hickman. He's there. Makes the catch the side is up. Burton skies
- 2:30:44to rather deep center on the first delivery and the side is out. No runs one hit. No errors
- 2:30:49two left. At the end of seven it hangs the score of the New York Mets eight and the Pittsburgh
- 2:30:54Barrett's nothing. Bob Murphy with Leslie Nelson and Ralph Kanner. We go to the eighth
- 2:31:06inning here at Pittsburgh. The Mets in front of eight nothing. Cannazero leading off against
- 2:31:11Carpenter. Bowels it back to the crowd. Strike one. This has been hit by a pitch. They're
- 2:31:16on a walk and fly to right. Frank Carpenter is on a relief for the fourth time. A bouncing
- 2:31:22ball whacked to short. Handled by Andy Rogers to play the first of the downs and then in
- 2:31:27one down. One out and nobody on. That'll bring up Galen Susco. Well Galen has had quite a
- 2:31:35night. He has shut out the Pirates over seven innings. He's had two hits driving and he runs
- 2:31:41full time. And Galen gets a hand as he comes up. But now Galen steps in against Brooklyn
- 2:31:53born Frank Carpenter. Frank a 25 year old south ball was born in Brooklyn. Makes his
- 2:32:03winter home now at Richmond, Virginia. He originally started out at the Yankee farm
- 2:32:16system and was drafted by Pittsburgh from Columbus, Georgia in the 64 winter meetings.
- 2:32:24One ball, one strike on Susco and now Galen steps up. Carpenter cranks up. Down comes
- 2:32:38his pitch and it's outside to Galen. Frank Carpenter was really used out of that bullpen
- 2:32:44last year. He was in 69 ball games. One five and lost three and had a 2.7 earned run average.
- 2:32:55Pitching two and one. Foul ball hit down the right field line and up into the upper deck.
- 2:33:06In the second inning with runners on second and third and nobody out. The infield playing
- 2:33:12again, Galen bounced one through the middle scoring Roy McMillan with the first run of
- 2:33:16this ball game. Grainful sacrifice fly made it two nothing. A swing and a miss he struck
- 2:33:26him out. Galen is fanned by Frank Carpenter. The big explosion came in the fourth inning.
- 2:33:34The bases loaded and two men down. Galen Susco single to right scoring McMillan once again.
- 2:33:40That made it three nothing. Bobby Klaus walked on three and two with the bases loaded forcing
- 2:33:46in a run. That made it four to two. Eddie Crane pulled in double to left center driving
- 2:33:52in the fifth and sixth runs and Joe Christopher singled off the wall and left driving in the
- 2:33:57seventh and eighth. Outside to Bobby Klaus one ball and no strikes. Bobby got a hit his
- 2:34:05hand up as one for three and a one. Pitch by Carpenter is over for a strike one ball
- 2:34:17one strike. Slow curve the drift fin of the knees for a strike one and two on Klaus.
- 2:34:47The one two pitch. It's inside of the knees two and two. Eddie Crane goal waiting on deck.
- 2:34:54That's the Rangool Chugga Mug is a wide mouthed last buck that holds 12 ounces of beer and
- 2:35:00it even feels right when you pick it up. They're just about the handiest thirst quenchers in
- 2:35:04town. You'll find special Chugga Mug displays in your area. Bobby takes the count goes to
- 2:35:16three and two. Now Carpenter over the head down comes the pitch. Bow ball walks it back
- 2:35:26out of play and the counter remains three and two. Three two delivery a bouncing ball
- 2:35:48hit towards second. He comes up throwing and it's in time for the off. Frank Harpen comes
- 2:35:57on to get the side one two three in the eighth inning. No runs no hits no errors done left.
- 2:36:02At the end of seven and a half innings the score the Mets eight and the Pirates nothing.
- 2:36:13Roberto Clemente will be up against Galen Fisco in the last of the eighth inning. Clemente
- 2:36:18is trying to walk single to left and been thrown out by Chris Cannazero when he tapped
- 2:36:23one out in front of the plate.
- 2:36:29Fisco Wines here's the pitch outside and low he came sidearm with it one ball and no strikes.
- 2:36:50Big swing and a scribbler fouled on the third base and once again he went for a high breaking
- 2:36:54ball. Very similar pitch to the one that he was thrown out on by Cannazero his last time
- 2:36:59up. The Mets were rained out yesterday Tuesday afternoon and beating Chicago ten to five
- 2:37:07they had a six run inning in the fourth. Now tonight the Mets had a six run inning. Five
- 2:37:16times in the young season the Mets have scored as many as six runs in one inning. Foul ball
- 2:37:25hit down the third baseline by Clemente.
- 2:37:36They're in the ninth inning now in Milwaukee. Braves leading the Giants ten to three. In
- 2:37:48the fourth inning in St. Louis the Dodgers came up with four runs and chasing Bob Perky.
- 2:37:55The Dodgers and the Cardinals are now tied seven to seven after three and a half. Low
- 2:38:00and outside. Now it's two and two on Roberto Glimini. Both of the starters, Sammy Kovacs
- 2:38:08and Bob Perky are out of it and the game is tied seven to seven after three and a half
- 2:38:13in it. Long drive, it's deep to left center field, way out by the wall in left center
- 2:38:32field. Four hundred and six foot dribble by Roberto Glimini. The ball struck in the
- 2:38:48vines that just about covered the brick wall. Then dropped the right screen down on the
- 2:38:54track right at the four hundred and six foot mark. What a cloud by Glimini. Willie Sargell
- 2:39:03is the batter. Sargell has passed the second, drawn a walk single to right. A long hit by
- 2:39:11Roberto, the seventh in the ball game for the Bucks. Fusco into his land up now to pitch
- 2:39:20outside to Willie Sargell. Don Glenn Dunn is on deck. Gary Crowell and Frank Leary who
- 2:39:38are midway between starts are losing in the bullfist. And the change up is a high drive.
- 2:39:54Willie Sargell hit a change up to glad he's throwing power and hit the ball in the head
- 2:40:14corner. That pin HTV is
- 2:40:44to work in the bullpen. Along with Tom Parsons, Gary Krull, and Frank Larry were just tuning
- 2:40:54up for future starting assignments Saturday and Sunday. And so now Larry Miller is coming
- 2:40:59in the ball game and he's coming in having thrown only about four warm-ups. Larry was
- 2:41:05not in the bullpen, Larry Miller that is, when Casey went to the mouse. And now Larry
- 2:41:12Miller is being brought in. He'll have eight tosses on the mat and that's all he'll be
- 2:41:19getting with him, although he did warm-up earlier in the ball game tonight. So now the
- 2:41:46first two runs gave up eight hits. He walked four and struck out four. And hard-throwing
- 2:41:53Larry Miller is now in the ball game for New York. Larry acquired during the winter and
- 2:42:00a swap with the Dodgers. It was impressive in the spring, the best felt that he needed
- 2:42:05this. Work under fire, he opened with Buffalo, he had one-sixth and lost only one and had
- 2:42:12a DRA of 2.5. So did he, right then, has been sent to Buffalo and Larry Miller now takes
- 2:42:18his place in the Miss Pitching staff. Larry was with the Dodgers most of last year. He
- 2:42:25got off to a fast start to the Niners, the Dodgers brought him up, he was fishing well,
- 2:42:29he hurt his knee in September and that hampered him the rest of the way. The hitter is Dan
- 2:42:36Glenn Dunn. Glenn Dunn is 0-3, that counts the third, stops the short, reaches in a fourth
- 2:42:45play. Bonnet down a third base flat, a beauty of a block, a play by Spiti, he's out of
- 2:42:52base fifth. Glenn Dunn and Bunny for a base fifth and the Pirates are picking up momentum.
- 2:43:03The Pirates are back in base fifth, he's got his foot made to play perfectly but simply
- 2:43:07not in back. He raced in, picked it up with his fair hand through accurately, all in the
- 2:43:11same motion but not in back. Now the hitter is Bill Masurowski. Doug McGraw and Tom Parsons
- 2:43:24are warming up for New York. Masurowski, right-hand batter facing Larry Miller. Curve a little
- 2:43:30bit outside, one ball and no strike. Larry Miller has been winning as a starting pitcher
- 2:43:36at Buffalo. Now Larry will be pitching out of the bullpen with a New York miss. Nobody
- 2:43:45out if he pitches to Masurowski. A foul ball hit towards the middle, a base fifth to center.
- 2:44:01That hot grounder was just an entrance ball beyond the reach of the bellies. It was almost
- 2:44:15a twin kill. It was hit hard by Masurowski through the middle of the base fifth, four
- 2:44:20hits in a row by Fitzburg. Now the runner is on first and second, still nobody out of
- 2:44:30the hitter is Andre Rogers. He is really hot. He's had three for three in the ball game
- 2:44:36today. Last time up a long double. He's hitting.364. The Fitz-Pan Miller is fouled upstairs
- 2:44:46and out of play. Larry had very little time to get ready. He was not warming up in case
- 2:44:53he went to the mat. So he had only four or five quick warm-ups in the bullpen and then
- 2:44:59came to the mat. Runners at first and third. The pitch, a line drive in the air, but right
- 2:45:12here it's going to be a base fifth. Five in a row. The third foul is run. Four gets away
- 2:45:18from Christopher. Giving on the third goes Masurowski and Rogers goes to second. It's
- 2:45:30one and one, a base fifth and an error. And the Pirates are very quickly fighting back
- 2:45:38into the football game. The crowd's standing here at Bucks Field. The Bucks have a 12-game
- 2:45:44streak on the line. They now have rattled off five straight hits. Once again, Casey goes
- 2:45:50to the mat. That's four hits and four times the pass for Rogers. He went on to second
- 2:45:57on the error and drives to Christopher in the outfield. It's eight to three now and
- 2:46:20Tom Parsons is coming in to see what he can do about it. Jim Paliorone will be coming
- 2:46:32up. And Harry Walker still has a lot of bench hitting that he can call on. He has men like
- 2:46:40Jerry Lynch and Gene Freeze still in the dugout, along with Ozzie Virgil, Gene Alley, and
- 2:46:47Del Randall. Earlier in the ball game, he used two of his left-hander centers, Ozzie
- 2:46:53Sagat and Manny Modus. Now Tom Parsons is the third pitcher of the inning. Tom's going
- 2:47:17to be the second and third and nobody out. The Pirates have five straight hits. Manny's
- 2:47:23406-foot double to left center. Virgil's 11th home run of the year, a two-run shot. A bunch
- 2:47:31single by Glenn Bannon, a ground single through the middle by Nazarovsky, and a lying single
- 2:47:36to right by Rogers. It's over at County Stadium in Milwaukee. The Braves beat the Giants tonight
- 2:47:4410-3. Ken Johnson all the way was the winning pitcher. Starter Bob Shaw, the loser for the
- 2:47:53Giants. Braves scored nine of their ten runs in the third inning. The only American League
- 2:48:09game schedule was played this afternoon with Minnesota tightening the grip on first place
- 2:48:14by beating the Red Sox 4-3, a fastball, one of your seventh game without a loss. Here
- 2:48:23we go. Jim Palioroni, 6-foot-3-inch right hand batter stepping in against Tom Parsons.
- 2:48:39The Pirates, if they pick up the two in scoring position, are really back at it. Dean Freeze
- 2:48:54is the first to score. Jerry Lynch is also around the bat rack. Here's the pitch on the
- 2:49:09way. Inside, ball one. Parsons started against the Bears over the weekend at Chase City.
- 2:49:15The ball is in the starting role. The tall right-hander, Wyanton Fitch, is a high drive
- 2:49:24to deep right center. Way back, the fifth-over, he's getting under it, makes the catch in
- 2:49:27deep right center. Mazurowski comes down the line to score, and Rogers takes and goes to
- 2:49:32third after the catch. The ball is up deep enough in the right center so that it's not
- 2:49:46only a score to run, but moves the runner from second to third. Now, pinch hitter deluxe,
- 2:49:51Jerry Lynch, will bat for blank curve in the fifth-over center. Jerry Lynch, better on
- 2:50:20the right side. The ball is in the center, and one of the best games ever known. A high
- 2:50:50drive to deep right center. Jerry Lynch getting a tremendous two-run honor on the first pitch
- 2:51:02thrown by Parsons. His fourth home run of the year is fifth and eleventh, runs down and
- 2:51:11again, KC has gone to the mound. Now, Jambucky and Blank-Larry are warming in the bullpen.
- 2:51:34That was the 17th pinch hit home run in Jerry Lynch's career, which is a Major League record.
- 2:51:42Billy Cowan and Shani Lewis are quickly warming their arms up for defensive maneuvers, and
- 2:51:49the Pirates are on the verge of making one of the greatest comebacks in a ball game that's
- 2:51:53been pulled off in a long, long, long time. Parsons remains in. Larry and Besky are warming
- 2:52:04in the bullpen, and now KC comes out of the dugout. He was stalling for more time for
- 2:52:09his bullpen. And now the changes are going to be in the outfield. Cowan and Lewis have
- 2:52:16been warming up down the left field line. You need a lot of speed in the outfield with
- 2:52:20this big ballpark. But now KC goes over to the third base umpire, Dan Landis, to signify
- 2:52:27the changes that KC once made in the outfield. Shani Lewis will replace Joe Christopher in
- 2:52:32right field. Shani Lewis goes to right, relieving Joe Christopher as a defensive move. Blank
- 2:52:57Larry and Jim Besky warming up as rapidly as they can in the bullpen. KC has gone back
- 2:53:03to his dugout. He's trying to get as much time for his bullpen as he can, and you cannot
- 2:53:07blame him for that. It's a chilly night, and things are happening so fast, he's trying
- 2:53:12to stop the momentum. Six runs are in for the Pirates. Six runs in on six hits, only
- 2:53:22one out. Now Billy Cowan goes to left field, replacing Ron Swabota. Billy Cowan to left
- 2:53:38field, Ron Swabota coming up. New York in the outfield now has Billy Cowan in left,
- 2:53:43Jim Hickman in center, and Johnny Lewis in right. Barsen's a safe two hitter, Pal Yaroni
- 2:53:51hit one about 390 to drive it a run it was caught. Jerry Lynch hit one over the screen
- 2:53:57for a two run homer. The Bucks have had two home runs in this inning, they've got six
- 2:54:02runs in on six hits. The Mets have a two run lead, now the wind up by Barsen, and the pitch
- 2:54:07to Bailey is high, one ball to no strike. The Mets came in to the last of the eighth
- 2:54:16inning with a lead of eight to nothing, it is now eight to six. Here's the wind up pitch
- 2:54:23on the way, fouls by Bailey, one ball, one strike. Bill Burton is the on deck batter.
- 2:54:38Bailey is the eighth man up in the inning, but many led the inning off and so the big
- 2:54:43pirate guns are about set to come up again. Bailey a long ball hitting for the batter
- 2:54:48now, though he's the lead off hitter. The one one pitch, low and outside, two and one.
- 2:55:08Down to Parsons, pitching in relief. The doll right hander whines and pitches a smash on
- 2:55:15the ground to short, he's filling up with it. The peg across the dam and two men down.
- 2:55:20Bailey grounded hard to shortstop, two men out. Now Bill Burton is coming up, Burton is
- 2:55:28down for four. Bill Burton is the ninth man to battle the inning. Parsons trying to get
- 2:55:48on his target, here's the pitch on the way, outside and high, it's ball one. As you can
- 2:55:54bet, Parsons would love to get Burton, so he'd have some money as a lead off hitter
- 2:55:59instead of coming up with somebody on base. Now the left hand hitter waits and the pitch
- 2:56:09gets the outside corner for a strike. One ball and one strike. Six runs are in on six
- 2:56:20hits, including two two run homers. Each team has had a six run inning. A smash right back
- 2:56:30to the mound, knocked down by Parsons, he thrills to first to side his outs. That was
- 2:56:36a line drive but it was hit right back at Parsons who knocked it down with his glove.
- 2:56:41And then through to first for the third out. Six runs, six hits, one error, none left off.
- 2:56:50But the Pirates throw a tremendous scare into the Mets in the last of the eighth inning
- 2:56:54and they'll be within reach when they hit the ninth. At the end of the eight innings
- 2:56:58the score now of the New York Mets eight and the Pittsburgh Pirates six. Bob Murphy with
- 2:57:06Lindsey Nelson and Ralph Keiner. Al McPean is now the new pitcher. Jerry Lynch who hit
- 2:57:13a two run homer as a pinch hitter and established a major league record by doing so. Stays in
- 2:57:20the ball game and goes to left field. Al McPean will be hitting in Bill Burton's spot. Burton
- 2:57:26made the last out. So the Pirate outfield has Jerry Lynch in left. Roberto Clemente is
- 2:57:32flying center and Willie Sargell has moved over to right. Now the eighth fan on the Pittsburgh
- 2:57:48staff. Al McPean is pitching to Eddie Crane Poole as we go to the ninth. Outside and highball
- 2:58:05once. McPean is the sixth pitcher that Harry Walker has called on. Right in for a strike
- 2:58:15to Eddie. Eddie has driven in three runs tonight for the Mets with a sacrifice fly and a two
- 2:58:21run double. So Eddie has one for three and three RBIs. He now leads the club in RBIs
- 2:58:27taking over the leadership from Ron Swaboda. A liner hits beyond the reach of Rackers in
- 2:58:32the left center for a base hit. Lynch plays the ball back in and Eddie Crane Poole has
- 2:58:37his second hit. Now Johnny Lewis will be hitting for the first time. He went to the right field
- 2:58:50replacing Christopher to tighten up the defense when the Pirates were scoring runs. Johnny
- 2:59:07Lewis the batter against Al McPean. McPean has been given credit for saving eight victories
- 2:59:12for the Pirates this year. They look for the punch. The pitch to Johnny Lewis a strike
- 2:59:17on the outside corner. Bob Skinner a former Pirate has been a two run homer for the Cardinals
- 2:59:30in the last of the fifth innings. Adam had a high scoring battle between the Dodgers
- 2:59:34and the Cards. The Cards are back in front. He bumps it foul. No play on the count strike
- 2:59:39two. Wayne Lewis nine to Los Angeles Dodgers seven with the Cardinals hitting in the last
- 2:59:47of the fifth innings. Houston behind Don Nadebort out in front of Cincinnati eight to one. They're
- 2:59:57the last of the seventh of Cincinnati. Right here what was an eight to nothing ball game
- 3:00:04is now eight to six in favor of New York. Pitch to Lewis a ground ball to second base.
- 3:00:19Mazalasky goes to second for one. Rogers the first. Not in time. Lewis gets there ahead
- 3:00:35of the throw. One out and one on. Charlie Smith coming up. Charlie has two for four.
- 3:00:38Frank Lary and Larry Banaras are warming up for New York. Pittsburgh in the ninth inning
- 3:00:45will have Clemente, Sargell and Glenn Benning. There are three big hitters coming up. Now
- 3:00:57the pitch. Chopped foul off the plate going off to the left side. No play. So Harry Walker,
- 3:01:05the Pittsburgh manager has the three men he would call on first to come up and hit. As
- 3:01:11the Bucks hit in the last of the ninth innings. So the Mets would love to pick up another
- 3:01:15runner too if they possibly can. Off to the left side. No play. So Harry Walker, the Pittsburgh
- 3:01:24manager has the three men he would call on first to come up and hit. As the Bucks hit
- 3:01:29in the last of the ninth innings. So the Mets would love to pick up another runner too if
- 3:01:33they possibly can. Throw to first. Not in time. Now the pitcher on the way. It's too
- 3:01:49high. Charlie lets it go. One ball, one strike. Billy Cowan in the on deck circle. He relieved
- 3:01:58rounds for Bota in left field. Now the 1-1 pitch. Foul ball hit him off the fist with
- 3:02:12a good pitch. Back toward the first box. One out and one on in the ninth innings. They've
- 3:02:34been in front on the count. The 1-2 pitch. Inside the letters two balls and two strikes.
- 3:02:43Another Cardinal homer against Dodger pitching in the fifth inning by Hoolie and Havie or
- 3:02:47Nobody on. So the Cardinals have at least three runs in. And they're leading the Dodgers
- 3:02:53by at least 10 to 7 in the last half of the fifth inning. The 2-2 pitch. A ground ball
- 3:03:00foul down the third base line. You usually won't score 10 runs off the Dodger pitching
- 3:03:06staff in three or four ball games. 2-1-2. Johnny Lewis is on first. Charlie Smith is
- 3:03:35the batter. Al McBean and relief. Down comes the pitch and it's a foul ball that's not
- 3:03:43playable back up into the crowd. Quite a few of the fans left before that six run explosion
- 3:03:51by the Bucks. The Mets were sailing along with an 8 to nothing lead coming into the
- 3:03:57last of the eighth innings. Roberto Clementi's 406 foot triple started things up. Here's
- 3:04:11the 2-2 delivery. Low and outside. Now a full count 3-2. Charlie has hiked his batting average
- 3:04:21out of 283. Charlie has real good power. And Jerry Lynch the left fielder is playing him
- 3:04:33almost back to the track in left field. Now Lewis edging off. There he goes. Here's the
- 3:04:40pitch. A foul ball that lost it out of play over behind the third base dugout. Johnny
- 3:05:00Lewis is the base runner at first with one out at 3-2. Let's see if Casey has him running
- 3:05:05in. Now the stretch by McBean. There goes Lewis. A high fly to center field. Lewis slams
- 3:05:17on the break. Lameni drifting in. He's under it. Makes the catch. Two men down. Throw two
- 3:05:27outs to the top of the ninth inning and Billy Cowan will be up for the first time. Billy
- 3:05:40went to the outfield for Ron Sloboda. Ron had gone headless and four times up. Here's
- 3:05:48the pitch by McBean. A foul ball that knocked the Hellman right off of Cowan's head. Billy
- 3:05:53grabs his forehead. Trainer guffs my turning out of the dugout but Billy says I'm alright.
- 3:05:58Don't worry about me. That ball came back. It fouled off the bat handle into the dirt.
- 3:06:04Bounced up and knocked the Hellman right off of Billy's head. Larry Minneth and Frank Larry
- 3:06:25are keeping warm in the New York bullpen. Here's the pitch. Ground ball hit down to
- 3:06:30third. Handle by Bailey. He throws the second. Fourth play on Lewis. The side is out. So
- 3:06:36we'll be going to the last of the ninth inning. The side is trailing by two and there are
- 3:06:41big hitters coming up. No runs, one hit. No errors, one left on. At the end of eight and
- 3:06:46a half innings the score of the New York Mets eight and the Pittsburgh Pirates six. If
- 3:06:52you've been wondering what Swedish Americans sing after the smorgasbord, listen to this.
- 3:06:57Touralerie is a song that Swedish Americans sing over and over at their parties and picnics
- 3:07:14until they raise a fearful thirst. Then they change their tune. Halon Gorr is the traditional
- 3:07:28Swedish drinking. Unfortunately we are missing the audio for the Pirates last of the ninth.
- 3:07:35Here's a recap of what happened. Roberto Clemente struck out and Willie Stardew grounded out
- 3:07:43from pitcher to shortstop to first. And Don Clendenin fly to right field. Nothing across.
- 3:07:51The final score was the Mets eight, Pirates six. Mets had eight runs, 11 hits, one error
- 3:07:59and six left on base. And Pittsburgh had six runs, 12 hits, no errors and eight left on
- 3:08:08base.
