Transcript
- Lauren: I was embarrassed at first, but then I was like, you know what? This is something that I enjoy doing, and you know, I'm just gonna go for it. DadBodSportsCards: All right, welcome to the Dabod Sports Cards podcast. We are interviewing Lolo Rips here today. Lauren: Alan? DadBodSportsCards: I I found her on TikTok. Her one of her videos came up on my for you page, and I was hooked like with the some of the stuff that she's ripping. She's ripping some of the same stuff that I've ripped, the NFL tops flagship, and I was curious for that. So I just reached out and said, hey, let's see if we get a little background. So welcome to the show, Lola. Lolo. Lauren: Yes. Thank you for having me. Yes. My real name is Lauren, but for years DadBodSportsCards: Lola, you're you're welcome. Okay. Lauren: I've had people call me Lolo, pretty much like Lolo DadBodSportsCards: Lolo. Lauren: Lolo ever since high school and it's kind of just stuck as a little nickname. So I figured let's roll with it. Yes. Thank you. Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: Yep. That's it's a good nickname. It's a good nickname. It could be worse. It could be worse, but that's a that's a good one. All right. So for people discovering Lolo rips for the first time, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the card hobby. Lauren: Yes. So again, my name is Lauren, aka Lolo Rips. I am very new to the hobby. I discovered it when I went to go visit my dad and stepmom in Ohio in July. They are huge card collectors. They have quite literally everything you can think of. Sundays is their days to go to the card shop and you know do rips and It was when I was there. They're like, all right, it's Sunday. It's time for our weekly card shop trip. And I was like, What? Like, what are you people spending your money on? I'm like, Cause I'm 24. I'm like I'm like this my generation didn't really grow up with like trading cards. I feel like as other generations did. so I was kind of like What what's the hype around this? And then we went to the card shop and they got what they usually get. And I'm like, they have Disney. I found some like peanuts stuff. so the first boxes that I ever got was the Disneyland 70th anniversary box. I got a few blasters of those, and then I also got a holiday peanuts blaster. So we got those. We went back to their house. We ripped and I was like, I get it. I get the rush. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: They were like, here, open one. because I being the impatient person I am, I we we went to a restaurant and I was like, I wanna rip in the restaurant. Like I wanna do my Disneyland, you can do your sports like at home. Like leave me out of the sports. I don't care. But then we got back, they started doing sports and they're like, just open a few. And I was like, Okay, yeah, I understand why it's so addicting and fun. So I think that's kind of how it really started. By the end of those two weeks, you know, I had done sports, Disney, and I was like, I think I can make content out of this, you know, going to college for marketing and being in a job where I do social media. I grew up with social media, so yeah, that's how Lolo Rips came about. DadBodSportsCards: So I I went on your TikTok page and I went all the way to your first video. So it looks like you've recently just started this. Very recently. Lauren: Very recent. So like I said, this was in the middle of July when I discovered everything. I got home towards the end of July, and that's when I created my account was like literally the last week of July. And we're in the first week of September now. And I've I'm at 830 followers right now, which I'm so grateful for. it's a great community to be in and happy to have discovered it and to be a part of it. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, definitely. The community is, I think what a lot of people when they start this, I started doing the podcast last year. but I started selling a what night part-time for the past, I think it's been it's been two years now. So like two and a half years. So a lot of people chase, like want to chase like your community. You want to get a whole bunch of people coming to you and on your shows. It's a grind, it's not easy. But what Lauren: It is. DadBodSportsCards: what you find out during the process is your community is your community. So like the people that you attract to you that constantly come there every day or every time you go live or or anytime you put anything on social media, like those are the same people and that's your community. And I think for me, like when I first started, I was kind of chasing to try to get the numbers of followers and everything like that. But that's not the case. Like you want to find good people for you community that that actually like your content and like you, and then vice versa. And it's like, And then, like, I mean, I invited you to my last whatnot show, and a lot of people in there, I'm like, we just have debates off just like stupid random stuff. Like selling yes, Lauren: Right. It was a good time. It was a good time. DadBodSportsCards: selling cards was like kind of secondary, but we all kind of hung out, debated, and then every now and then we sold cards. so I remember you saying that once you got to 500 followers, that your dad was gonna buy you a hobby box. Did you get did you get the hobby box yet? Okay. Lauren: Yes. I have not, I've been very busy and he's been busy. so I have not gotten the hobby box yet, but I do know that I want the tops Disney Chrome 2026 hobby. DadBodSportsCards: Okay, good. So you know what you so you know what hobby box you want. Awesome. And I I'm gonna assume Lauren: Yes, yes. Ever DadBodSportsCards: that you're gonna do a video on that as well. Okay, awesome. Lauren: Yes, I am. So that'll be super fun. I'm so excited ever since I had my first card shop trip in Ohio. I was like, what's that one up there? And they're like, that's a hobby box. And I was like, what's a hobby DadBodSportsCards: Right. Lauren: box? And they're like, a lot of money. And I was like, can't be that DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, yeah, yes, yeah. Lauren: much. And then they were like, Yeah, that goes for like 500, whatever. And I was like, it's a lot of money. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And so we'll we'll get into the hobby boxes and like the different kinds of boxes and everything. But you kind of said something to me before about like the gambling aspect of everything. So Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: I think in one of your videos you actually put like you got you had some winnings from the casino Lauren: Yeah it's DadBodSportsCards: and then you bought you bought some packs with with some of your winnings. So can you explain is that is that one Lauren: I did. DadBodSportsCards: of the pieces of attraction that gets you into ripping is because of the like the gambling aspect. Lauren: That is a hard question to answer because I feel like if I say yes, that doesn't sound DadBodSportsCards: Thank you. Lauren: very good. But you know, I think with anything you kinda just chase that not like a high, you the thrill exactly. You DadBodSportsCards: The thrill. The thrill, the thrill, yeah. Lauren: chase that thrill. And I you know, I have lived in Southern California my whole life. I we have quite a bit of casinos here and then I'm not too far from Vegas. so yes, I right. DadBodSportsCards: okay. Yeah. Yeah. Lauren: So I did go to the casino one night with some friends. I did win some money. And the first thing that came to mind was, let's go to the card shop. DadBodSportsCards: Now, do do any casinos there in Vegas have like a card shop in like their casino? Lauren: actually have not been to Vegas of age yet. DadBodSportsCards: Okay, okay. Lauren: but if they did I feel like that'd be really dangerous. Yes. I DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, I think I think some of them have like the vending machine like boxes and everything. Like I see them at air well, I haven't seen them yet personally. I I'm here in Virginia and I don't I mean, I don't fly a lot 'cause I hate flying. But I heard some airports have I heard some casinos like out west, like near Vegas, have and everything. Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: So I was just curious if you've if you've seen any of that kind of stuff in the live yet. Lauren: Yes. I was actually at LAX about two weeks ago and I stumbled across one of those machines and they had DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: the Prism FIFA World Cup Monopoly blasters in there. So I got one of those. It was okay. Don't know if I'll DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: buy out of a vending machine again, but they are definitely around. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: Right. Okay, okay. Yeah, I've seen some like like some mystery boxes too, like Pokemon mystery boxes out of those vending machines. Again, Lauren: Mm-hmm. DadBodSportsCards: I haven't like I've only seen on on social media and everything. but I Lauren: Yes. DadBodSportsCards: mean I mean there's a market for it. There was a guy on TikTok that I think he started off with he bought two vending machines, turned into like Pokemon vending machines and and now Lauren: I think I've sp two, yeah. DadBodSportsCards: he has like seventy of them. And he's just money's just raking in for him, you know. Lauren: That's crazy. I'm sure. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Lauren: That that's a great way to make some money. I'm sure DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, yeah. It's it's Lauren: it started off as a side hustle and I'm that very quickly it it's full time. Yep. DadBodSportsCards: And now it's a surprise full-time gig. Yep, exactly. Yep. So so you're out in the West Coast then, right? Okay. Okay. So Lauren: I am, yes. California. DadBodSportsCards: yep. So that's good. I because I'm just trying to get demographics. A lot of people on my show are like on on my whatnot show are from the Midwest or East Coast. Occasionally we have one guy's name's J-Rock. He's out in the West Coast too. Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: yeah, so he's he's like a huge 49ers fan. I always give him shit for that. But Lauren: Ha ha ha. DadBodSportsCards: But so would you consider yourself, I know you're you're fairly new to this whole thing, but like would you consider yourself like do you wanna be more of a collector, a ripper, or maybe a seller? and then I'll ask you about breaks in a minute. but like where do you th where do you where do you think you're gonna fit in the hobby or is that still to be determined? Lauren: I think that's still to be determined. I think I'm still trying to find my niche. I I think my niche right now is Disney. and like I said, you know, the more knowledgeable I become on sports, the more I might want to keep the cards. but for now I'm kinda just like, meh, unless I find a player that like I'm absolutely in love with and follow. I kind of just, you know. DadBodSportsCards: Like you said earlier you're more into to like was it college football or just college sports? College football? Lauren: College football, yeah. So I mean my biggest chases right now are like I'm I went to Clemson University. So my biggest chases right now DadBodSportsCards: nice. Lauren: are obviously Trevor Lawrence, Kate Klubnick, you know, just so many of those players that are now in the NFL. I love when I stumble across a card of theirs, whether it's a base or the best card in the box. DadBodSportsCards: Right. Do you do you have any Trevor Lawrence like rookie cards or anything? Have you have you not yet? Okay. All right. That Lauren: I don't, I don't. DadBodSportsCards: that's something we'll work on. We'll get we'll go ahead and try to find you a graded one. Yep. Lauren: Fingers crossed. Cause that would be very cool just for like my personal collection. I DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, yeah. Lauren: think that would be awesome to have. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, Trevor Trevor Lawrence is a pretty good buy right now. Jacksonville was pretty good. They I think they surprised a lot of people. They played pretty well last year. They got they got the right head coach now. So Lauren: Mm. DadBodSportsCards: I think that team's heading in the right direction. So Trevor Lawrence is like a really good buy low. And then if he makes a playoff run, like his cards will kinda kinda go up. I kinda treat I kinda treat sport because I I mainly do sports cards, mainly NFL, but I mean a lot of it is just like it's like stocks. like up and down on the values of these cards. And then, Lauren: Exactly. Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: yep. And so like a lot of vintage one, like vintage, like Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, LeBron James, all those cards, all the big names, Mickey Mann, like they're starting to skyrocket again. And that I I like the comp for them, the comparisons to them, like in the stock market, like they are like the Googles and the Netflix You know, something that's not going away, that's always gonna go up in value every now and then. Yep, exactly. Lauren: It will all the way. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: So I don't know what that ringing, I don't know if that's on my end. no, you're kid. Lauren: I'm so sorry. I when I did when we did our thing with work the other day too, she's like, I can hear your text come through. And I'm like, my gosh, I don't know DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: how to turn that off. But I think she said once she watched the video back she couldn't hear the dings. Fingers crossed. We can just set that part out. my gosh, I'm so sorry. I wonder if I can DadBodSportsCards: Okay, perfect. That's fine. And I yeah, well, I will try to so I usually no, you're good. I usually let everything kind of just ride. like on the editing side, like whatever Riverside cuts out. but I kinda did they do okay. I'm still fairly Lauren: And they do a great job at editing. They do. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: new at it. I kinda just put everything out there, like 'cause like I mean, it's an amateur podcast. So it's like maybe one day if we get on Barstool or Netflix, I could bring all you guys with me and then Lauren: Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Then we can get the professional equipment and all that stuff. Always, always. Lauren: Yes. Shoot for the shoot for the sky. And like shoot for the stars, you know. DadBodSportsCards: So you're still trying to figure out what you want to be in the hobby. do you know anything about brakes? Okay. Lauren: I don't. I see so many people do it and I'm like, what is this? Like, what is this terminology? DadBodSportsCards: Okay. So so breaks, breaks is a good way for people, like when they don't want to buy a lot of hobby boxes, right? so I mean it doesn't even have to be a hobby box, but a lot of the breakers will have like a hobby box of whatever niche that you want, sports cards, TCG, you know, like Disney One Piece Pokemon. And you'll get like a hobby box and maybe some other boxes, blaster boxes, mega boxes, all different kinds. Sometimes it's just full hobby, they might have like two or three hobby boxes. And I don't know how they would do it on the TCG side because I've never been part of that break. But for the sports side, you would you would bid and pay for your team. So any card that got pulled from that team, that's the card that you got. So I don't get into breaks a lot because it is I'd rather go to a casino rather than than doing that. Because it's it's hit or miss. yeah, Lauren: Right. Right. Same probability. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: yeah. And depending and depending on Whose site that you go to, you could pay, like for me, I'm a Bears fan. so like I could pay 300 bucks for the team for the Bears, and they might have three hobby boxes. And hobby boxes could be anywhere from like 500 to $1,000 in football. So it's like if there's three hobby boxes up there, okay, there's good value. But if you don't hit, like you're out 300 bucks. Yeah. Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: So it's kind, so it's kinda like it's like kind of like going to the blackjack table and hope hopefully that you know that that you hit. Lauren: Exactly. Yes. DadBodSportsCards: But breaks for me is I don't. I don't do them and I don't I don't I don't enter them. I tried breaks in the past just like to do a low end thing for like some of my whatnot followers that way it's affordable for them and everything. And it's it's a lot of work, but it's it's something consistent that you you have you have to you have to build on. So I was just curious like if you've done any breaks yet and probably not. And that's maybe may you might try it once in the future. Yeah, not yet. Lauren: Not yet. Yes. I who knows? Maybe I might actually do the breaks and maybe I might join in on someone doing the breaks. Who knows? To be determined. Cause there's something DadBodSportsCards: Right, there you go. So Lauren: about like actually doing it myself. Like that just feels so good. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, yeah. Nope. Lauren: Like I'm like, no, that that's fine. DadBodSportsCards: No, I I I I mean, honestly, I think you're like you're like a hobby purist. Like you want it you want to get the packs, you wanna open it yourself. And like for you, it's the thrill of of getting that you want because Lauren: Yes. It really is. It's DadBodSportsCards: it's it right now it's going to your PC. All right. So speak Lauren: Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: speaking of other than PC, cards that don't go to your PC, I see that you have an eBay account. so how how did you c how did you come across like putting some cards on eBay? And what is kind of like your routine on what you decide like, hey, I want to keep this card or I might try to sell it. Lauren: Yes. So I guess the reason why I kind of chose eBay over whatnot is just because I've used eBay before. I've bought DadBodSportsCards: Mm-hmm. Yep. Lauren: stuff off of eBay. I've sold stuff off of eBay. That's just kind of what I'm familiar with. As for deciding what goes in my PC and what I sell, kind of like I said before, if it's, you know, something that I'm chasing a player or a character or something like that, I will add it to my PC, but if I don't really care, you know, DadBodSportsCards: Right. Lauren: I'll I'll throw it up on eBay. So I'm I'm definitely still kind of navigating it. I don't I don't have too many cards listed on eBay right now because I I usually only list cards that are that I know are gonna sell. Like I know there are tons of people who list cards out there for like a dollar. but I just I don't know. I'm like I might as DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, so Lauren: well add those to my collection to kind of build up since I have much and then, you know, maybe eventually I'll list them for a buck, but right now it's kind of just cards that I think might sell or have some value for them. DadBodSportsCards: Right. And and that's that's that's a good way to look at it. And that that's how I started when I started putting stuff on eBay was like like the cards that people I think would want, or that would that would sell. And what I learned, and I kind of stopped doing it. I need to get back in the routine. when you're starting to sell like lower end, like even just like singles, like dollar to five dollar cards on eBay, is the the best way to do it from from experience and then from what I've seen from others. is like posting five to ten a day if you have that if you have that in your inventory like one to five dollar cards offer free shipping because people don't want to pay shipping and it kind of it kind of comes from your pot but if a card's worth like four bucks and then you put it on there for five with free shipping there's a chance that it could sell it after fees you know you might get like two three bucks right which is not a lot but what I learned when I did do it because I did do it like for about a month and a half straight. And I made on just low-end cards. I think the highest card that I sold on eBay was probably maybe like $14, right? The rest of it were like under $14 between a dollar to $14. And I got up like to $275. And that's $275 Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: that would just be sitting in. Well, I have like so my closet here's like a shipping closet in this room. So it would just be sitting there. I wouldn't be able to Lauren: Collecting DadBodSportsCards: Yes, I wouldn't be able to sell it on my stream because nobody wants those cards. So I'm like, there's a lot of people out there that are collectors that might need that card for their set, or maybe Lauren: Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: they're just a fan of that person and then they're willing to pay. And then that's so I looked at it, it's like, well, that's 275 bucks that I could put towards a card that I want. Like, you know, sometimes you'll see a card like at card stores, like, it's 400 bucks. Like, I don't want to drop 400 bucks for that card right now. But Lauren: Is no DadBodSportsCards: when you're making an extra like 275 bucks every month and a half on eBay just for you know, grinding out the lower the lower end cards. Like you're like, okay, maybe like now after doing this for like two or three months, I could buy that PC card that I want. So that's Lauren: Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: that's one way. like I said, it's just routine posting five to ten a day, gets you in the routine. And then once you get in that routine, it's like it's it's it's pretty easy. And that's like an additional side income for the hobby. Lauren: Yes. DadBodSportsCards: so whatnot, if you ever decide To go on whatnot, hit me up and a couple of our buddies. We can definitely give you a lot of tips. Yeah, I think you're doing the smart thing is try to build a following first on social media before selling a whatnot. The hardest thing on whatnot for the male perspective for the male side is getting people to your room, right? and I'll ask you about the the whole female thing in in a second because there's pros and cons. I I one of the main reasons why I want to interview you is one is because you're a female and get your perspective on on the hobby. Lauren: Yeah, for sure. DadBodSportsCards: Your side of hobby. but yeah, so like whatnot, definitely hit us up first, but you definitely want to get a following first. I didn't do that. So, like, so whatnot feels like a grind every time. and then selling if you if you try to want to do this eventually full time or you know, have a good side income and everything. All right. So just want to ask, what's the what's the most expensive card that you pulled? Or that you have right now that that you know of. Lauren: Yes. so it was out of a topps resurgence blaster and it was DadBodSportsCards: Nice. Lauren: one of the electro lights cards and it was Ashton Genty. So I pulled DadBodSportsCards: Yep. Nice. Lauren: that and I like literally I I had my dad on FaceTime as I was opening these and I'm just like filming myself opening it and I'm like, this is a cool card. And I'm like DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: showing him and he's like, yeah, I've never seen that. And then I'm like looking it up on eBay after and I'm like, I just got a case hit and I didn't even realize it. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: That's awesome. That's awesome. Yep. Lauren: So that was definitely awesome. So that's the most expensive card I have right now. I saw like when Resurgent just first came out, it was going on eBay for like a hundred and thirty bucks. DadBodSportsCards: Mm-hmm. Lauren: I have mine I've slowly kind of decreased the listing price because I just don't think it's as popular anymore than it than the card you know what I'm trying to say. it the value is decreasing obviously as you know time goes on. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, yeah. Yep. Lauren: I got an offer for sixty today. Don't know if I'll accept it. We'll see. DadBodSportsCards: Right. Yep. Yep, because after eBay fees and everything, that sixty turns Lauren: Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: into like forty six or forty seven and everything. Yeah, no. You do. Yep. Yeah. Lauren: Exactly. I mean I'd get my money back for what I paid for the blaster, which is, you know, always a good thing. And I think like also when I first started, I looked at this as like a a side hustle, like, I can, you know, sell these cards and make money off of it. But the more that I've started, you know, doing it and getting into it, I'm like, wait, this is really fun and like kind of wholesome and a fun hobby. Then now I look DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Lauren: at it more like Okay, I don't care if I'm out like, you know, forty five bucks 'cause I had fun doing it and I'm building my PC up so DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Yeah. Yep. And that's and that that's a great way to look at it. like so I I I rip a ton of cards. I have like a ton of cards that I don't think I'll ever sell, right? Especially base cards, right? So ba base cards and I like I don't just want to throw away. So Lauren: Right. DadBodSportsCards: so what I what I try to do is when I get enough, I'll donate like the base cards like to the all children's hospital. That way Lauren: That's awesome. DadBodSportsCards: That way some of those kids, you know, like, you know, they they might not know the worth of them and then, you know, it to them there's exciting because they might maybe their favorite player is Trevor Lawrence, they'll get excited that it's a one of these like little packs that I make for them. But I also what I also Lauren: Exactly. Yes. DadBodSportsCards: do, I also hand them out during Halloween. So my neighborhood my neighborhood for Halloween probably gets anywhere from like four hundred to eight hundred kids that stop by. So like one, I never have never have enough candy. So now like cause I We probably spend like about five hundred dollars on candy every year for Halloween. And it's never enough. Right. So I'm always at the end of the night, I'm always raiding our pantry for like snacks and everything. Right. But another thing that I figured out, I was like, well, let me like base cards. Let me put the base cards Lauren: Hilarious. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: in like on a table and free and have these kids. Well, there was Lauren: That is all. DadBodSportsCards: one of the one of these guys that live in the like I live in like the the single family households. And then this guy lives in the townhouse as part of our neighborhood. And he hit me up and he told me, he's hey, me and my son, like we collect cards now because of the Halloween thing. Right. Which was pretty cool. Was pretty cool. So him and his son, Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: like they'll collect cards and everything. And that's like a hobby that they enjoy together. Well, he cut Lauren: That's fun. DadBodSportsCards: he kind of got he kind of went to the gambling route and started buying whole signed up buying a Lauren: No. DadBodSportsCards: whole bunch of blasters, getting into breaks. And Lauren: Mm-hmm. DadBodSportsCards: then he's like, He's like, yeah, man, I had to stop. He's like, I had to go off of whatnot because I was spending too much. Because Lauren: Right. DadBodSportsCards: he's like, I'm thinking I could flip it and everything. And like what you learn is, you know, yes, it could be a great player, but that card might not be worth anything. And Lauren: Exactly. Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: one of the things that you went through was when you first ripped Top Resurgence and you got that Ashton Genty case hit, was when the product first comes out, all the prices are high, right? So you so you want to try to get that card on the market and sell it as high as you can. And then over time, if you don't sell it, that card starts dipping and dipping and dipping. And that goes with that that goes with every that goes with ever Lauren: Anything. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: and I it took me a while to learn that. like I like I pulled some pretty cool cards and like a case hits and like low numbered and then I found out it's really hard to sell because nobody wants to risk buying it when it's at its high point. And then and then eventually like I had a six hundred dollar card. It was selling like eight hundred, nine hundred on eBay. So I'm like all I'll put on six hundred maybe someone will buy it at six hundred instead of paying for the eight Lauren: And DadBodSportsCards: hundred. Still couldn't sell it. Eventually sold the card on my like my whatnot stream for like two fifty. Cause someone took someone took a risk. So that they paid me two fifty and then they they hit me back up and told me they were able to sell it for three seventy five. So they made a little bit of profit. We both made profit. But Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: but but it but it but it is tough like what you're saying. Like you're seeing those prices dip and everything. Lauren: Yes. It's it's definitely risky. Yeah. It's it's a gamble. It's literally gambling. It it DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. And again, and again, it's like it's like s it it really is. Lauren: really truly is. And you know, it might be a little bit of a more wholesome way to gamble, but it is DadBodSportsCards: Right. Lauren: still gambling at the end of the day. But yeah. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, but and and it could and it c you're right, 'cause it it could feel wholesome because let's say you're ripping tops Disney packs, right? And you pull a Mickey Mouse and you're like, that's that Lauren: Right I'm a daddy, Mickey DadBodSportsCards: just makes you happy, right? So I so Lauren: I'm like so excited. DadBodSportsCards: so I I am curious, like, are you are you so I saw on your latest post that you've you ripped some cards and you went to Disney. So where would where was how did that I how did that idea come come across? Lauren: I have, like I said, I live in California. I live in Southern California. So I have grown up going to Disneyland my whole life. Now that I'm an adult and have adult money, I have a season pass. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Yeah. Lauren: so me and one of my best friends, we go pretty often. I mean, we were blocked out for like three months because we have like the cheapest SoCal resident pass. so we just started going back and Kind of when I was in Ohio buying these Disneyland 70th blaster boxes, I was like, this would be so fun to actually do at Disneyland during their 70th anniversary. So DadBodSportsCards: Mm-hmm. Lauren: I think a week before I went back to Disneyland, I went to my local card shop and I picked up a 70th blaster and I was like, called up my friend and I was like, let's go to Disney. We're gonna rip some cards. You're gonna rip for the first time in your life. at the happiest place on earth. So that was fun. It was a little bit chaotic because it was a Friday and it was nighttime. but it was very fun. A time was had for sure. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, are you planning to do future rips like in the Disney park since you have a season pass? Lauren: I think so. I I think that's just so much fun. It really just DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: adds to the video, you know, instead of, you know, my typical background that I have. You know, people love interactive videos, especially when it's, you know, somewhere like Disneyland. so I I could DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, yeah. Lauren: definitely see myself doing more of the 70th anniversary blasters, neon chrome, you name it. DadBodSportsCards: And maybe maybe you can get one of the characters to rip with you. Like, I mean that that would be pretty cool. Like I don't know if Lauren: Yeah. Right. DadBodSportsCards: I don't know if Mickey can because of the gloves that they'll have on. But maybe like the Snow White impersonator, maybe. Yeah. Yep. Lauren: Exactly. Maybe like the princesses, yeah, someone that actually has hands to rip and you know, maybe they DadBodSportsCards: Yep, yep. Lauren: can even sign a card. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Well, I mean, that's that's actually I that's actually that's a great idea. Get one of the Disney Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: princesses and maybe they pull a card of themselves and then you could have them like live sign it on your TikTok. That would be pretty awesome. That would be Lauren: That's like a dream. That would be awesome. DadBodSportsCards: that would be and and and you're right, that's something like when I saw that you were ripping inside Disney, I like, I've never seen anything like this. This is great idea. Like to go to different locations and everything. Yeah. Lauren: I had a great time doing it. Yes. I think next time I'll definitely go during the day. it was a little DadBodSportsCards: Mm-hmm. Lauren: bit hard to do at night and like the firework show was going on and the parade, and I'm DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: like, this is little chaotic. exactly. So I think DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, and then you gotta worry about lighting and all that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Lauren: next time I I definitely learned a few things going this past trip and doing that. so definitely during the day next time and having some more set locations in mind to do it because I was just So anxious to get in there. I'm like I I've had this box for a week and a half. I'm ready to rip. DadBodSportsCards: Right. Yeah. So let's one more question about Disney. so if you had to choose like unlimited sports card hobby boxes for a year or unlimited Disney trips for a year, which one would you choose? Lauren: I would definitely do the hobby boxes. DadBodSportsCards: To the happy boxes. Lauren: 'cause you know, if I hit something really good out of the hobby box, then that could potentially pay for Disneyland trips for a year. DadBodSportsCards: Yep, that's that's a good way of looking at it. All right. So on a not on a more serious note, but on a like I am curious. because you are a female in the hobby. So Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: I mean you're still fairly new. So hopefully nothing like bad has happened to you for being a female in the hobby. But can you share your perspective on being a f because I mean this hobby was it's more male dominant. You see a lot more males than females. Lauren: For sure. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: like I went to the National Chicago this year. It's like the biggest card show of the year, right? So next year we'll be in Chicago again. I mean, there's I mean, you got card like cards at people's tables, like it's like five million dollar cards, right? It's it's the big it's the biggest event of the year besides Fanatics Fest, which is in New York. but that's more of like that's not really more on the collecting side, that's more on like, hey, like all your favorite sports players are gonna be going there and everything. Sports players go to the national two, but it's a little bit more collector focused, right? So, Lauren: Right. DadBodSportsCards: but predominantly like is all males at like all the vending tables. occasionally you would have like, I mean, there are there are a couple of female influencers that I follow. and they were they were there. But most of the time, if you saw a female there, it was like it was like the wife of the husband that's doing it. that's you know, being sub the the support role and everything. But I always like I always want to see the female perspective on it because on whatnot. females attract a lot of people to their show, right? And it's for v I mean, it's I mean, we're grown-ups here, right? It's it's because because Lauren: Right. DadBodSportsCards: cause sometimes guys are creeps and idiots and they just want to flood the female show, exactly. And then there and then there's some female whatnot sellers that play into it, which I understand because hey, it's it's it's a business, right? You're trying to make sales. So Lauren: Exactly. Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: I'm just curious on what your perspective is. Like if you eventually go to whatnot, Like what what kind of seller do you think you're gonna be? Are you because you have a background in social media and everything, so you know what sells, you know what attracts people. But are you gonna try to stay away from that and just kind of just just be you and the wholesome you or are you gonna play into it a little because you know it's part of the game? Lauren: You know, I'm I had this discussion when with my dad a few weeks ago when I was in Ohio and he's like, you could get on YouTube, you could get on whatnot and do all of this, and I in my head I'm like, you know, like that's DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: kinda risky, and then this DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: this isn't gonna sound so disgusting, but I like I said it as a joke. I was like, I'm gonna have to have my feet out in these videos for like And to get like an audience, like if I want DadBodSportsCards: Right, right. Lauren: sales, like I'm gonna have to do something crazy like that. totally kidding. I would never have my dogs out in a DadBodSportsCards: Right. Lauren: live stream. That would be diabolical. DadBodSportsCards: Right. Right. Lauren: but you know, being a female in this hobby, you know, I I haven't had anything bad personally happen to me yet. DadBodSportsCards: Good. That's good. Lauren: which is really good. I'm sure there's unfortunately a lot of women in the hobby that have had some not so fun interactions. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: You know, like you said, there are plenty of creeps out there that are just waiting for their moment to, you know, prey on these women that are, you DadBodSportsCards: Yep. Yeah. Lauren: know, doing this. And you know, they can be my age in their twenties, thirties, or they can be, you know, like much older and like it like it it It doesn't matter. Like a creep is gonna be a creep. DadBodSportsCards: Exactly. Lauren: but can I ever see myself, you know, moving to whatnot and like doing the live streams and, you know, live sales? I'm not sure. To be DadBodSportsCards: Mm-hmm. Lauren: quite honest with you. I I think I would have to, you know, obviously be more knowledgeable in what I'm doing before I do that. I think it's A possibility, but right now at this moment in time, I'm not sure. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, no, and that's I I totally understand that. like I said, I think you're doing it right. You build a following first, and then and then you can kind of gauge it from there. Like if you get enough people following you on TikTok that want you to go, you know, do live selling, then that Lauren: Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: might that might motivate you too. And then you're just you, right? Because you already got your followers, you got and then people are there, you don't have to do any of these other antics that other sellers do and everything. Yeah. Lauren: Exactly. And like going back to that, like it like you know, if you're sometimes you have to be performative on these lives. Like you you you want to attract a crowd, you want to do like crazy things. Like I see plenty of lives like that are totally unrelated from the hobby and it's just the stupidest things, but there's like hundreds and thousands of people in these lives. Like of a person DadBodSportsCards: Yes. Yes. Lauren: in like a Spider-Man suit just being like dumb. What are we doing? But you're making money. You're people DadBodSportsCards: Right, exactly. Yeah. Lauren: are gifting you like you have millions of likes and views on this live. Like it's just crazy. But I I do like DadBodSportsCards: It is. Lauren: my wholesome, authentic self. but you know, if if I get to that point, I get to that point and I do it and I have fun doing it. But right now I think I'm just trying to still build. Yeah. Figure everything out DadBodSportsCards: Figure all everything out. Yep. Yeah. Lauren: exactly. DadBodSportsCards: And and build yeah, and build build build your base, like your your following. Lauren: Exactly. Yes. DadBodSportsCards: so yeah, like when you when you talk about like what other people do, I s it came up. I have I didn't see it directly on whatnot, but it was it popped up in my social media like on Instagram. And there was a guy inside like Walmart, and he was walking around Walmart live while he was on whatnot. And he asked the chat, he's like, Hey, there's a dude over there with like with flip flops. He's like, I'm gonna start I'm gonna start the auction. And somebody bid on that on this person, he has no idea who he is. This the flip-flops, and then it sold for $32. Somebody paid $32 to get that guy's flip-flop in the middle of Walmart. So Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: he didn't, he didn't think it he didn't think anybody was taking him seriously, but he's like, crap, now I have to talk to this guy. So he's talking to this guy. He's like, Sir. Can I buy you new shoes here? And then I'll buy those shoes off of you because I he's like and then he told them what happened. But it's just it's just crazy. Yeah, I mean, you're right. The whatnot is kind it's like it's like the Wild West, is what what it what it seems like. like, yes. Lauren: Yes. See that that's like crazy. I see people like sell their like dirty used socks and I'm like, that is like DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: so gross, but you're making so much money. DadBodSportsCards: Right, right, right. Yeah, it's like it's like, man, like I got plenty of socks that I could sell, you know, for like for an extra grand, you know, that I could put towards the hobby. But yeah, no, I Lauren: Right. Right. Right. DadBodSportsCards: I I I hear ya. And I've like I've been approved to go on TikTok live, but I haven't done it yet because whatnot the reason why I chose what not was because it was like very user friendly. e eBay's starting to do live auctions like like like kind of like whatnot. They have that and also Fanatics is Lauren: I have seen that a little bit. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: doing it too. I haven't jumped to those other sites because I don't really know a lot of I haven't done a lot of research on it. I've just stayed on Whatnot because I've been there for two years. And it's been it's been really user-friendly. but I'm Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: sure there's pros and cons to Fanatics Live, eBay Live, TikTok Live and everything. I'm sure all of them have certain requirements. So like a Whatnot, before you like like on eBay, when you set when you sell a card, you send it out to them, you don't get paid right away, right? So Lauren: No. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: It you get paid when they get the card and everything. So whatnot Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: is like that for your first thousand orders. Once you hit your thousand orders, then you can qualify for instant payout. So after yeah, so after you have a thousand orders, right after the show when you generate the label, the money goes into your account already. Well, it goes into your whatnot account and then you push it. Lauren: That's good one. DadBodSportsCards: But like me, I push mine to my PayPal. So like after Lauren: Right. DadBodSportsCards: I after my show, like thirty minutes after I finish my show, my whatnot payout monies in my PayPal account and everything. So that's what that's another reason why I haven't switched because I don't know what the requirements are for the other side. I think in the future I will try to see what it's like just for research purposes, just to see which one I might like best and let people know. but yeah, whatnot, it's it's a wild, it's it's crazy. It's wild west. If you ever get to go to the national, which is like the big show in Chicago, again, next year it'll be in Chicago next year. And then after next year it's going to be in Detroit. two years. So like they they kind of changed venues depending on on the year and and that Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: but but whatnot had a huge section there they must have spent I mean we're talking about like in the Lauren: I've got. DadBodSportsCards: 10 to 20 million to get a lot of their whatnot streamers to be there and while they're Lauren: That's DadBodSportsCards: and they're running live shows there and then also they had like I mean just they had a whole section of of this building. That and then I mean it was it was great market it was great marketing. Yeah, it was I mean, but in general Lauren: That is super cool. Yeah. That's amazing. DadBodSportsCards: the national was was was a lot of fun. Like, so definitely if you ever want to go to that, hit me up because got plenty of tips for you. Cause it you can't do it you Lauren: Definitely will. DadBodSportsCards: can't you can't do it in one day. So it's impossible to do it in one day. So like we Lauren: No, no. I DadBodSportsCards: we went for five days and I'd say about day three was about day three was about like okay, like I've seen everything and now I've like negotiated cards and everything. Lauren: Good. Right. DadBodSportsCards: So speaking of that, so have you have you bought singles yet from the card show card shop or have you just you just bought like Lauren: now. DadBodSportsCards: blasters and everything? Okay. Lauren: Just blasters, a few mega boxes here and there. DadBodSportsCards: Okay. Lauren: but I haven't actually bought any singles yet and DadBodSportsCards: Okay. Well we'll get back we'll get back to you when when you do start buying singles if you do or if you start selling singles to the card shop because I want to know the female perspective of that. Like, do they give you like better deals, one because you're a female, or do you get worse deals because you're a female? Because they're like, sh Lauren: Right. Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: she doesn't know what she's doing, so let me let me lowball her, right? Like I'm sure, yeah. Like I'm curious to know about that aspect of Lauren: Exactly. I know, it's like when you go when a female I mean, this is probably the worst example to use, but you know, places do do it. You know, when a female goes to a car shop and, you know, they're DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Yeah. Mm? Lauren: charging her way more than you know, the guy standing next to her that has the same issue. I've only sold Pokemon cards to a card shop before, but you know, I kinda like looked on eBay before and they weren't selling on eBay. So I'm like or w the my cards that I listed weren't selling on eBay or others DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Yeah. Lauren: of the same card that were selling. But I was like, you know what? I really don't care about these cards. I'm just gonna sell them. Got twenty bucks for like four cards, but you know, I in my pure wholesome heart, I would hope that they aren't doing that to the women out there. I'm sure some places do, but you know, from my experience, my one experience that I had, it was really nice. Went super smooth. Yeah. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. That's good. That's that's that's that's good to know. like a l I'm here in Virginia. The area where I live, there's not a lot of card shops. So I have to drive like 45 minutes to an hour just to get to two additional card shops. We have two like near me where I live. but they're like they're I mean, I mean they're extremely local card shops, right? So they're Lauren: Mm-hmm. DadBodSportsCards: not anything they're not anything extravagant. Like they have a lot of inventory, but it's like it's hit or miss on like if they're gonna have like the the higher end stuff, right? Like the better. Like the better stuff that people are looking for for me to flip. Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: when I go to Richmond, which is about forty-five to sixty minutes away, about an hour away, they have bigger card shops there. And I've gotten a pretty good relationship. Lauren: City. Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: I got a pretty good relationship with with owners there because they're Bears fans too. So I'm able Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: to I'm able to buy cards from them like for 70% because they know that I'm flipping. So they give me a little bit of room to to flip it on my end. so I'll I'll try to go Lauren: I sound DadBodSportsCards: out there like once or or twice a week, but Like I haven't seen I've been to quite a few card shops like here and in Florida and in other states and I haven't seen like any card shop that has female owners. So that's why like, you know, that's another thing that would be kind of cool to see a card shop that's being run by a female, right? Lauren: That will be very awesome. DadBodSportsCards: I mean that's just that's just progressive. I mean not even progressive, it's just it it's it should be they should be able to, right? It shouldn't just be males like owning card shops. And that maybe that's just A whole different political thing because the whole women not making the same money as men and everything. So I always try to look at avenues where how like the female perspective, because I want the hobby that I love and enjoy to be like equal to them as well. Right. So that's why that's Lauren: Everyone should yes. DadBodSportsCards: that's why I love getting like your perspective on it. and then that way there could be some other there could be a girl who's 15 or 16 that loves the hobby right now and she might want to get to sell and like What you're saying today could help her. Like maybe she had a bad experience, but because you haven't had one yet and maybe you might not ever have one, that might give her the like the mindset, like, okay, that was just a bad person that did that to me. It's not across the hobby and everything. So, Lauren: Right. Yes. Definitely. DadBodSportsCards: so you said your parents also collect. So your mom collects cards, or is it mainly your dad? Lauren: So it from my understanding, it it's my dad and my stepmom. So it kind of sounds like DadBodSportsCards: Mm. Lauren: my stepmom, you know, had a little collection when she was younger. and so did my dad. And now they have like a filing cabinet, like just rows DadBodSportsCards: That's awesome. Lauren: and rows and rows and rows of cards. so yeah, they are huge collectors. I honestly don't think that they've ever sold anything. They're just truly in it for the love of the hobby and like the collecting aspect. so yeah, I I'm very grateful to have their guidance and their help with everything and I'm super grateful that they got me into this fun little hobby. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, I mean that yeah, I think that's awesome. That's something like it's definitely like a family kind of thing. I'm trying to get Lauren: Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: I'm trying to get my kids into it. Like my oldest son, he is nine he's eighteen. He'll be nineteen in a couple of weeks. So it's like I'm trying to get him into like like he does the podcast with me with with Flinttown. but I'm trying to get him in the business side of this. That way he can learn business and maybe, you know, one day like he can help this explode because He's younger and then he can he can carry it on, right? Lauren: Exactly. DadBodSportsCards: my two littles, they're nine and ten. They don't really care about well, the nine year old likes Pokemon, but he only likes Pokemon because he wants me to buy him like hundred dollar cards. Like like and then he thinks he could sell it, but he doesn't really know anything about Pokemon. He just knows, like, this card's worth a hundred bucks. I want it, right? So, Lauren: Right. DadBodSportsCards: but but both of them like I let them use Cap Cut and editing tools and how to edit videos because I want them to learn that side of the one, because maybe they can help me in the future. But two, Lauren: Right. DadBodSportsCards: like I want like I want them to embrace that technology. because Lauren: Yes, for sure. DadBodSportsCards: because if if if you do want to get good at this and you if you don't have a s a a card shop, it's like you have to create content. You have that because you gotta your avenues to get people following you. You have to be creating content and everything. So my my my littles, I call them like the nine and ten year old, I they want to be future YouTubers. And I told them, well, once you become teenagers, we'll set up a system for you, then you can then you could potentially do that. But like I just want them a little bit older. But yeah, yeah. I'm trying to get in the Lauren: For sure. Yeah. When I was nine and ten, that was my thing too. I'm like, I wanna be a YouTuber, like I wanna do this and that, and then you know, fast forward fifteen years later and I'm, you know, a social media manager and doing social media. So I mean, tell them to go for it. You know, you might not be a big famous YouTuber, but it's baby steps, baby steps. DadBodSportsCards: No, yeah, bab baby steps and also like there's there's plenty of money to be made on behind the scenes stuff. Like Lauren: For sure. DadBodSportsCards: what what what are those things like forgive me, I'm older. So what are those things that people they they generate the clips? They they're called a certain name where they generate clips of like all these like two, three hour podcasts and they just post all the clips to social media, like so the shorter clips, and they're the ones who are generating money. Like the infl big time influencers will pay these companies or pay the a person to generate those small clips, there's a lot of money to be made in that avenue. Like these guys, Lauren: Mm-hmm. DadBodSportsCards: these people are just behind the scenes setting Lauren: Right. DadBodSportsCards: up the content, you know, like for Lauren: Right. DadBodSportsCards: like, you know, the the the Kelsey show or all the other big time streamers and everything. They got the behind the scenes people. So there's there's definitely a market for it for other people. so I mean we kind of touched base on everything that I wanted to was there anything else? Like did you have any questions or is there anything else that you want to talk about before letting you go? Lauren: I mean, I guess the one thing I would say is, you know, don't be afraid to try new things. I was very hesitant to start a TikTok account. just because I'm like, people I know are gonna see this. my gosh, I'm so sorry. I've DadBodSportsCards: No, you get it. Lauren: heard things again. let me start over. but yeah, don't be afraid to go for it, try new things. I was very hesitant to start my TikTok account just because of the fear of what if someone I know see that sees this? You know, what what are people gonna think about me? Like it it like I was embarrassed at first, but then I was like, you know what? This is something that I enjoy doing, and you know, I'm just gonna go for it. you can you know this this is a great way to grow it's a great way to network and meet new people and just going back to like the whole female aspect you know you can do anything it doesn't matter if it's you know a male dominated area just go for it if if you like DadBodSportsCards: Yeah. Lauren: it and if it brings you joy just go for it and yeah DadBodSportsCards: No, I I I love that answer. The only thing else that I would add is just be yourself, right? Just just be yourself. Yep. Don't don't yep. Yep. Lauren: Be yourself. Exactly. Be authentic. Be genuine. Yes. DadBodSportsCards: Cause that's what gravitates people towards you. So you being yourself authentic. Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: you're not put you're not putting on a show just to get followers, like you're not being fake or anything. You enjoy this hobby. You want other people to see how excited you get, like your Disney content, like ripping packs at Disney, like. Like I said, that that attracted me just because I'm trying to find ways like that's different than what everybody else is doing. And that was totally different. Lauren: Right. DadBodSportsCards: And when that came up in my feed, I was like, that's cool. That's cool. And then I'm hoping I'm a hope. Yeah. And I'm Lauren: Yes. That makes me so happy. DadBodSportsCards: hope I'm hoping that you get some of the care the characters involved and they're ripping. And then that Disney princess thing, like having them sign the card. I think that's an awesome idea. But it would Lauren: That would be awesome. I would love DadBodSportsCards: just be cool because like there's a there's also a lot of kids in this hobby as well. And and Lauren: Yeah. DadBodSportsCards: You know, there there could be a Disney like a girl who's like ten or eleven on TikTok 'cause her parents let her go on TikTok and she's scrolling through and then she sees you talking to a Disney princess and ripping cards and she's like, I wanna do that. That's that's a lot of fun. Yeah, yeah. Lauren: Exactly. Exactly. That's you know, that's also, you know, the hope that I have, you know, just to spread the joy and like spread, you know, like I like I said, I never knew about this hobby until a few months ago and now I wanna spread that fun and that joy everywhere everywhere else. So yeah. DadBodSportsCards: Yep. And then I like myself and you know, a couple like hopefully a ton of other people after they see this, like they start following you. And that way they could see the enjoyment that you're going through. And I appreciate I appreciate the wholesomeness of it and like just the genuine excitement of of of ripping. that's great for someone like me to see because it's been a while since I've come across someone who's like, Hey, I just love ripping packs and just having fun with it, you know. Like, yep, yep. Lauren: too. I love it. It it it's a thrill. And as like an adrenaline junkie like a thrill seeker, I'm like, this is DadBodSportsCards: Ha ha Lauren: right up my alley. DadBodSportsCards: Yep. All right. So Lauren, who's also Lolo Rips on TikTok. I'll I will get your your I will put your social media up on here. I'll get your eBay name and then we'll put that up here. Hopefully we could generate some more sales for you. So like I said, whatever whenever you come to my whatnot shows or anything, always promote yourself. I'm all about that. ca I mean, you know, it's it's a community, we're all trying to help each other. So, and Lauren: Yes, for sure. DadBodSportsCards: like you said, you never know, you never know who you're gonna meet. You Don't know what the path is and just kinda go with it and have fun with it and do what you like. So yep. Lauren: Yes. Well, thank you so much for having me. This was so much fun. This is my first podcast ever. My first time DadBodSportsCards: Yep. Yeah. Lauren: ever doing anything like this and talking about, you know, this hobby. like I said, I'm not too knowledgeable, so I was a little nervous for sure. But yeah, looking forward to more and thank you so much. DadBodSportsCards: Yeah, you're welcome. And like, you know, if if we continue to do this, and then like three months, six months down the road, we can see how far you've progressed, how many more followers you have, how many more sales you've made, and some and again, the additional content that you're gonna put out. Like I'm I'm excited for.
