- 0:25sports with you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:28Here's what's coming up on our program here this afternoon.
- 0:33We're going to start with Elliott Clough.
- 0:35We will focus on the Hawkeyes with Elliott a part of 24/7
- 0:40Sports hawkeyeinsider.com along with David Eicholdt, Elliott
- 0:43Clough join us I think weekly during the next few months here,
- 0:47football into basketball season. But we will talk with Elliot
- 0:50coming up here at 12:25. Mitch Holtis his normal spot,
- 0:5412:45-ish. The Chiefs daily training camp
- 0:58reports we got another week of this or is this?
- 1:00I think this might be one more before that goes on hiatus.
- 1:04And then Mitch joins Us Weekly during the regular season.
- 1:08So today we've got another youngster, one of the rookies
- 1:12that's trying to make an impact on this roster and we will talk
- 1:15to Mitch coming up here at about 12:45.
- 1:18Staying in that football genre, we will head from the Chiefs N
- 1:23to the Twin Cities. Dane Moussutani, the beat writer
- 1:26for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, twincities.com.
- 1:29We'll get the latest on the Vikings report card on JJ
- 1:33McCarthy, Max Brosnor as well. He might be the backup
- 1:37quarterback. I'm not kidding you.
- 1:39I'm not kidding you. I.
- 1:40Don't think that's going to happen.
- 1:41Well, we'll see. I'll pick Danes brain on that is
- 1:43there's a lot of buzz around his camp that he is having.
- 1:46I think he's going to make the team whether he's the number 3
- 1:48or not, but we'll see. Did you think he was playing at
- 1:50Minnesota? There was there for a time, but
- 1:52there's a guy who's going to make it in the league.
- 1:54He got better in the back half of last year, but he was and.
- 1:57I would play them early, right? Yeah, it was one of the first
- 2:00Big 10 games, early October, late September.
- 2:03Late September. Yeah, no, I'm with you.
- 2:05Well, anyways, Vikings conversation at to kick off our
- 2:08number 2. And then Bill Bender got a lot
- 2:11of content on college football at the Sporting News, and we'll
- 2:15pick his brain on some of that about 125.
- 2:17Trent will make some picks, Circus sports sponsor those and
- 2:21we will turn things over to The Drive with Sean and Lucas.
- 2:25Boy, Sean's got to bounce in his step here today and I think
- 2:28understandably so. He secured the rights to
- 2:30Westwood one here locally and I feel bad for the the other
- 2:34affiliates out there. You can get it I'm sure as well
- 2:36or maybe you can. I'm not sure, but I know we have
- 2:39it here. I think it's outside of local
- 2:42programming, maybe as important a package as there's there out
- 2:46there. I mean, here's what it is.
- 2:47It's Thursday Night Football, it's Sunday Night Football, it's
- 2:51Monday Night Football. It's all playoff NFL football,
- 2:55including the Super Bowl. It's college football and we'll
- 2:58start with Ohio State and Texas. I get it, a lot of eyeballs in
- 3:01the state or on eye when Iowa State.
- 3:04And if you're not at the game, you're you're watching it or if
- 3:06you're in your car, whatever your tractor during the fall,
- 3:09during the harvest, you're listening to your team.
- 3:11I get it. But I think it's a great feather
- 3:13on a cap to have this. And oh by the way, maybe not got
- 3:15to the best part yet. Once Match Madness gets here.
- 3:19Thursday, Friday. Buckle up.
- 3:22Yes, TuneIn, because it's wall to wall.
- 3:25We won't be working. I remember back in the day when
- 3:27we had Westwood One. Not sure why we lost it, but we
- 3:30did. I think it was a deal when CBS
- 3:33bought. These Is that what it was
- 3:34Westwood? One, yeah, that it went to CBS
- 3:36Sports Radio, which was a property like that, cumulus, I
- 3:40think. Cumulus did, yeah.
- 3:41I think that's where the where it came from.
- 3:43Well, it's it's back here where it belongs.
- 3:45And KX&O is now the home of the Super Bowl in March Madness and
- 3:48college football and Army, Navy and all these big games that
- 3:52will take place. So well done, Sean Roberts
- 3:54getting that done. And you've got to bounce on your
- 3:56step and you deserve to do so because I think it's it really
- 4:00puts a stamp on Des Moines sports station, not just local,
- 4:04but when because I hate Fox. I'll be honest, when I was not
- 4:08Sean, I didn't have Sean's title.
- 4:09Yeah, But I when I was kind of, you know, the idea guy.
- 4:12Sure, I tried to cover up as much Fox as I could.
- 4:16Yeah, Yeah. Just something else, right?
- 4:18Yeah. There's no Cyclone show in the
- 4:20market. Let's start one of those.
- 4:21We did the hell? I put on a soccer show.
- 4:24You did, Yes. Do you guys to talk soccer?
- 4:28Just because I didn't want Fox, I wanted lien locals anyways.
- 4:31And it's it is a great thing. It really is.
- 4:33No, people are busy, You know, people who are don't have the
- 4:37advantages of you, that you're just your client all weekend
- 4:39long watching football, one of the.
- 4:40Kids needs a prescription, something happened, got to run
- 4:42to get a thermometer somewhere or whatever.
- 4:44You're out of soccer. I'm going to be at softball a
- 4:46bunch this fall, all the different sporting events as
- 4:48you're running around in your car, hopping around.
- 4:51And now on next Saturday, you can flip on Texas, Ohio State.
- 4:55You're going to be able to have that game here in central Iowa,
- 4:58Georgia, Tennessee, Nebraska, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia,
- 5:03Texas, Florida, Ohio State, Illinois, SMU, Clemson, SC
- 5:07against Alabama, on and on and on.
- 5:09These are the games that you're going to be able to get.
- 5:11And I will tell you of all the things and yes, Sunday Night
- 5:14Football, Thursday night, all those are excellent.
- 5:16Sure. What they do for March Madness
- 5:18because as you know, my family, we travel a lot because that's a
- 5:22lot of times the time that the only time that my wife can
- 5:24travel during the spring. So we'll take a little trip and
- 5:27how many times I've been locked into Westwood 1 making a drive
- 5:30somewhere and listening to the games, what they do in their
- 5:34wrap around coverage, it's phenomenal.
- 5:35It's reminiscent of what CBS was for so long, bouncing around to
- 5:40the games. Before we had all the options.
- 5:42Right where everything was on. That was not the Yes youngsters.
- 5:45TTBS. This was a different world that
- 5:47we lived in and it just it was up to CBS and your local
- 5:50affiliate what game you're watching and then how they were
- 5:53going to be bouncing around. That's what Westwood One does.
- 5:56It's incredible coverage and I think people back here having it
- 5:59back on Des Moines Sports station, it's going to be a big.
- 6:01Deal not. Couldn't agree with you more.
- 6:02Well done, Sean Roberts. Feather in your cap.
- 6:05Take a bow, young man. You'll hear him at 2:00 along
- 6:08with Lucas Strain when they come on.
- 6:10All right, Monday Night Football for last night.
- 6:12Good pick, by the way, on your Bengals.
- 6:14Prognosticity. The only good one I had, yeah.
- 6:15But baseball was down in flames, but well, well, well footballed,
- 6:20you know, where are you on the AFC Nord?
- 6:21What? Let me phrase that I'm going to
- 6:23start with one team in particular.
- 6:24OK, Can Aaron Rodgers really get this Steelers team to a playoff?
- 6:29And and what what I what I mean by that is can they finish ahead
- 6:33of the Ravens? I still think the Bengals, as
- 6:36bad as that defence is. And how about the offensive
- 6:38line? I thought Jabro was going to get
- 6:40killed last night there. Was a couple times it looked
- 6:42like he was going to. Oh my God, that he must have
- 6:44lost 20 something yards on that one scramble.
- 6:45He kept running backwards. Just get down.
- 6:50Can the can the Steelers out finish one of those two teams
- 6:52'cause I think they'll probably have to to get into the play out
- 6:54because the AFC West is not going to be a one bid team.
- 6:59I mean, there's, there's I think a couple of wildcards coming out
- 7:02of there, I think. What about the Steelers?
- 7:06Where are you? Statistically, he'll be able to
- 7:09surpass, I think what they got last year at the quarterback
- 7:12position between Fields and Wilson.
- 7:14And a big part of that was the sacks.
- 7:16I think that offensive line is going to be better for
- 7:18Pittsburgh. They had 49 sacks a year ago.
- 7:20Yeah, really. And with two guys that can move
- 7:22around in Wilson and Fields, that's a little bit concerning,
- 7:25but I think they are better there.
- 7:26But have you seen Rogers this this pre season trying to run
- 7:29around? Everybody keeps saying he's
- 7:31slow. He is slow because he's old and
- 7:33he's coming. Still two years ago.
- 7:34But he used to be a threat with his legs.
- 7:37After an Achilles injury in your 40s, that's not going to happen.
- 7:40You're not getting that back. He still look at him
- 7:43statistically a year ago. Well, he wasn't brutal.
- 7:45No, it wasn't Aaron Rodgers. And you take a team that every
- 7:49single year is going to be at minimum, OK, That's what Tomlin,
- 7:53that is the baseline. You're going to be OK.
- 7:55You're a 500 team. You're a nine and eight team.
- 7:58A healthy Aaron Rodgers for 17 games, which is a stretch in his
- 8:02owner. I agree.
- 8:03But I believe that yeah, he can take them.
- 8:05You, you do. I do.
- 8:08I still have the thought that he can do that.
- 8:12Caleb Johnson, rave reviews. They absolutely love what he's
- 8:16doing there. And last year, Nachi Harris
- 8:19wasn't very good. Nope.
- 8:20Where did he end up? Is he in Chargerville?
- 8:23Is I. Think he might?
- 8:24Be he is, yeah, he's there. And what going to be Hopefully a
- 8:28Marion Hamptons backup. He's got a future ticket to him.
- 8:3016 to 1 to win Rookie of the year.
- 8:32Well done. From back in April, it was
- 8:35saying it was Jalen Warren. They're they've upgraded there.
- 8:38You think all right, you upgrade quarterback, you upgraded
- 8:40running back, you upgraded offensive line.
- 8:43Even if you do take a small step back defensively, which they
- 8:47probably will, that team can go 11 and six with a couple of
- 8:50bounces. Did they up?
- 8:51Yeah, maybe. Did they upgrade receiver
- 8:54Pickens out? Well, Pickens is such a Mel
- 8:56content, right? I mean, it's just one head old.
- 8:59Is Metcalf now? What draft was he 19?
- 9:01Something like that, yeah. 2019 second round pick.
- 9:04Remember he showed up without a shirt on or something at the
- 9:08anyways and he looked like he looked the part, Yes.
- 9:10My God, looks like he's 270 lbs. Oh my God.
- 9:13Cut. Yes, thick.
- 9:16Yeah, he is a thick, thick guy. Yeah, I think so.
- 9:20Just because Pickens. It just you're always waiting
- 9:23for the other shoe to drop with him too.
- 9:24Like for him with the tight end defensively, Cameron Hayward not
- 9:28getting any younger. But you know what?
- 9:29They got the great equalizer, right?
- 9:31TJ Watt. Yes, again, if healthy.
- 9:33If healthy, Yep. If healthy and he hasn't been
- 9:35able to stay healthy. That's been a huge, huge issue
- 9:38there. Back end.
- 9:40Darius Slay comes in, he's good. He's still got something left in
- 9:43the tank. Yeah, but coming to the end, but
- 9:44I don't disagree with you. Jalen Ramsey now at the nickel
- 9:48spot, but I think there's still something there and him as a
- 9:51nickel slot has been tremendous. Joey Porter, we think there's
- 9:55another layer for him. I.
- 9:56Think he's terrific, I mean. That back four, he's pretty
- 9:59salty. Yeah, I I like them.
- 10:02Let me look at their schedule. That's a good idea, yes.
- 10:05I need to do the same thing. Good.
- 10:07God, if they don't start 3. And no, there should be an
- 10:09investigation. OK, who do they call?
- 10:11At Jet. Oh, that's your that's a dinger.
- 10:13Hello, Aaron Rodgers Bowl at Jet's home to Seattle.
- 10:16At New England. Well, at New England, you're not
- 10:20buying that New England hype. Are you?
- 10:21No, no, not at all. And they'll host Minnesota.
- 10:24That's a win. Well, no, that's that's over
- 10:26across the pond. That's right.
- 10:28That's that's back to one of the back to backers.
- 10:31You're aware, JJ McCarthy's Viking?
- 10:33I do, yes. That's why I said that's a win.
- 10:35All right, then they come back from there.
- 10:36They get to buy Cleveland, Cincy, Green Bay in the
- 10:40Chargers, Cincy. This team might win 11 games.
- 10:43They might win 11 games. OK, where's the tough part of
- 10:46their schedule? They're not like a daunting 4
- 10:49game stretch. There's that stretch from
- 10:52starting in LA against the Chargers at the Chargers, home
- 10:56for Cincy in Chicago, home for Buffalo at Baltimore.
- 11:00That's a pretty salty that's. Pretty good.
- 11:02That's pretty good. You get through that two and
- 11:04three, though. Yeah, you're in good shape.
- 11:06Their last three at Detroit, at Cleveland, home to Baltimore.
- 11:11Baltimore. The team to beat?
- 11:12Yes, you bet them every. Year.
- 11:13Oh, absolutely. They're Baltimore portfolios are
- 11:16chargers and the Bengals are to me.
- 11:18Well, I wish I could. I wish I didn't pull the trigger
- 11:20on the Bengals tickets that I've got.
- 11:22I just, they have no defense, Trent, they don't.
- 11:25And they're looking to. Are they really going to try to
- 11:28trade Hendrickson? They'll be out of their minds if
- 11:29they do. He's their own.
- 11:31He's their only guy and every everybody knows that that they
- 11:35play again. And he still did.
- 11:37He lead the league in tackles. He led the league in something
- 11:39last year. He's unbelievable.
- 11:42Here's Cincinnati's first six. OK, because they can always get
- 11:47off to a slow start. Every single That's why they're
- 11:49playing Borough. That's why they're playing
- 11:50borough if they don't get off to Two and O this year at
- 11:54Cleveland, home to Jacksonville. Have to do it.
- 11:56Have to have to. Because then at Mini at Denver.
- 11:59Detroit at Minnesota is a win. You don't like this team, do
- 12:03you? I mean, I know you don't like
- 12:05them, but do you like them on the field?
- 12:07This. Year I've already given you a
- 12:08hard time and given the Vikings fans a hard time than anything.
- 12:10I mean, talk about digging your heels in now.
- 12:12I'm kind of, I'm pot committed at this point that the Vikings
- 12:15are not going to be very good at this.
- 12:16Point because of McCarthy. I love the defense.
- 12:18I love Flores. Yeah, I I love 2 through 53 of
- 12:23that team. They might have as good a roster
- 12:25as anybody 2 through 53. That's not crazy.
- 12:28The problem? We don't know.
- 12:29Is the most important position. In sports and Max Brosmer
- 12:34waiting in the wings, you. Think he's going to win that
- 12:36backup job, huh? I think he's got a.
- 12:38Chance. I really do.
- 12:39How long did Addison get? Was he suspended four games or
- 12:42six games? I thought it was 4.
- 12:45So he's out for a while, obviously.
- 12:48Let's see, suspension start at the beginning of the year.
- 12:51That takes me to something we didn't get to last week.
- 12:56Speaking of Addison, you know they got all the information
- 13:00right about what happened, the details, a three-game
- 13:05suspension, by the way, and now we have Rishi Rice.
- 13:11Yep. What's the whole they're not
- 13:13ready? I I don't.
- 13:15I don't either. I don't either.
- 13:18We do not believe in no. We have fun with conspiracy
- 13:22theories. The Chiefs won.
- 13:24It seems like it goes their way more often than not, Trent.
- 13:28You're a Broncos fan, put that in there.
- 13:31I am not. I don't care about the division.
- 13:34The Chiefs are incredibly important to our market.
- 13:36We get that. But isn't this very difficult to
- 13:41sell for the NFL? July 17th, Vikings receiver
- 13:47Jordan Addison resolved ADUI citation pleaded guilty to a
- 13:52lesser demeanor misdemeanor. Thus opening the window for the
- 13:56NFL to rule. He'll miss the first three
- 13:58games. Also on July 17th, Rashe Rice
- 14:02pleaded guilty to a pair of felonies arising from A
- 14:05streetcar crash that was caught on video.
- 14:08He'll serve 30 days and spend five years on probation.
- 14:12His disciplinary hearing what happened until September 30th?
- 14:17And then they suspend him immediately because that would
- 14:19be Jacksonville, Detroit, Vegas if it's three games.
- 14:23Now, this is not to negate what Addison did, not to downplay
- 14:31what he did, but Rashe Rice, we're talking about a felony.
- 14:37Left the scene, right? Felony.
- 14:39Yep. As opposed to.
- 14:42Three games. It has to be.
- 14:43It has to be, absolutely, yeah. Double that, Triple that.
- 14:48No, I don't know about triple that.
- 14:52I mean, I'm I'm all for it. I'm not sure if I get my if I
- 14:55get my say I just. How the NFL on something like
- 15:01this with a team that they know. You remember how pissy Goodell
- 15:06got when the question came up at the Super Bowl last year about
- 15:08that? He hated it.
- 15:10And he should, because that should not be a question that
- 15:13anybody would have to ask a commissioner of a sport, no.
- 15:15Because it cut. It's right at the integrity of
- 15:17your league. But it did.
- 15:19It did. It annoyed him, and then you
- 15:21come back and you have an opportunity to change that
- 15:24narrative. Right off the bat, drop the
- 15:26hammer. If you do nothing, Nope.
- 15:28We'll see you at the end of September.
- 15:29Yep, not a good look for the NFL.
- 15:32No, Yeah, I'm not. It's it's going to be September
- 15:3630th. You said yes is when they're
- 15:38gonna get around to doing it. We'll see.
- 15:40We'll see. And what have they got behind?
- 15:43Him. I like the depth that they have
- 15:47created. Obviously worthy.
- 15:50Hollywood Brown, Is he good to go?
- 15:53I. Think so.
- 15:53And Hopkins didn't come back, right, Did they?
- 15:55Did They did not resign him. He was kind of at the end
- 15:58anyway. Shuster's been around forever.
- 16:00Smith's Shuster. Sky Moore.
- 16:02The Royals kid, I think they're excited about he that they got
- 16:06in the fourth round out of Utah State.
- 16:08He's a speed guy. Is he?
- 16:10Taekwon Thornton, we've heard about him the last couple of
- 16:12years from Mitch. He's talked about him.
- 16:15They have some depth there. But Xavier Worthy, I mean, just
- 16:18look at the production that he had in the back half of the last
- 16:21year when it felt like he was trying to figure out how to be
- 16:23an NFL wide receiver, right? Didn't he?
- 16:26Didn't he have a great Super Bowl?
- 16:27He did. He had a great back half of the
- 16:29season. I mean the improvements that he
- 16:31made from a season ago. And if this is a guy that is
- 16:34going to understand all those little nuances of being a wide
- 16:37receiver because in terms of speed, just being able to get
- 16:40open, he has all that, that's the guy that I look at.
- 16:43How many calls do you think the Bengals are getting today but
- 16:46with from receiver needy teams When it comes to that Tinsley
- 16:49guy? Did you see his pitches for
- 16:50touchdowns even? Went up high.
- 16:52Did you know who he was prior to last night?
- 16:54I didn't either. No.
- 16:56What? And he played at Penn State?
- 16:58Yes. And he's been around the league
- 16:59for a couple years and just done practiced.
- 17:01Well, no, he didn't know that. Yeah, my God.
- 17:04And contorting his body. I mean, he looked phenomenal
- 17:06last night. Not a bad guy, and so did Jake.
- 17:09Browning, by the way. Yes, that's part of the handicap
- 17:11that was. Part of the handy that was that
- 17:13was a good part of the handicap. Jake Browning, Well, we saw when
- 17:15Burl got hurt, right? We thought that they would fall
- 17:18off the Cliff, but Jake Browning wasn't brutal.
- 17:21Yes. No, not at all.
- 17:23Well, so the Steelers are in in your mind?
- 17:26I have them in. What we next was it next week
- 17:29we're going to be doing that going on record, going on
- 17:31record. We're getting close.
- 17:33Well, we can even wait another week if if necessary, but then
- 17:35we're going to be deep into. It we'll be a side hawk by then
- 17:37though. So what are you feeling like
- 17:39with K State, Iowa State as as we sit here on Tuesday, where
- 17:44are you leading? We've talked about this K State.
- 17:46You are. Yes.
- 17:47What is about the is Ava Johnson?
- 17:49It's that. Yeah.
- 17:51It's last year. It's the fact that that that
- 17:55left a horrible taste in their mouths last year.
- 17:57And I just can't get past the fact the two 100 receptions or
- 18:03whatever had they had last year, what whatever Higgins, Noel had
- 18:07combined 167 catches, walked out the door, walked out the door.
- 18:13I mean, ran out of eligibility, but they're not there.
- 18:16I can't get past how good those two guys were.
- 18:20And you just don't replace them. And I've heard a million times
- 18:23about the offensive line and I think this year is going to be
- 18:26better. But I've heard it before, right?
- 18:28Yes, I've heard it before too many times.
- 18:31And and Rocco Beck, as much as you, you love them.
- 18:35There's always one of those places, you know, God, you.
- 18:37I can't believe he did that. The defensive front.
- 18:42Do they have enough guys? Do they have enough guys?
- 18:45We're talking about a true freshman behind Alma Orange
- 18:47right now. It'll be.
- 18:48And they love them. Now Hawk will go in before we
- 18:51get to more, but still. They love them.
- 18:53That was one thing that also jumped out that we didn't talk
- 18:55about yesterday with the depth chart is after the guys that we
- 18:58do, the starters, what we anticipated, it's really young
- 19:02in those second spots. There's a lot of those.
- 19:05Yeah, when we got an OR and an OR and it's a red shirt freshman
- 19:08and another red shirt freshman, that was something that jumped
- 19:11out to me is the youth that and it's great for the future, but
- 19:15if injuries do hit and we'll see that injury report tomorrow, but
- 19:19if injuries do hit, looks like a pretty young team.
- 19:22So let's stop there for a second and we got to get to break
- 19:24because Ellie Clough is coming up.
- 19:25What do we think is going to happen with this, with the
- 19:28injury report when it comes to Iowa State?
- 19:30I mean, how serious will they take it?
- 19:33Don't they have to start out somewhat yet?
- 19:35We're going to play by the rules, but they're the first
- 19:37ones to go. They are.
- 19:39It's, it's them and it's Campbell and climbing.
- 19:41And are they on the phone with each other?
- 19:42How are you going to handle what?
- 19:43Are you I, I would anticipate right.
- 19:45You're going to see, well, I'm sure all the coaches, if you
- 19:47have some kind of connection, you're going to be talking how
- 19:50how are you doing this? If a guy's banged up, I I even
- 19:53put him on the list, he's going to play.
- 19:55Is it worth doing that? Are you going to have a list of
- 19:5730 guys? And and what and what if and
- 19:59what if they do play around with it?
- 20:00What's the ramifications? Probably a slap on the wrist.
- 20:03It's going to be nothing significant until you do it
- 20:06multiple times. We probably won't even hear
- 20:08about it. I I wouldn't get a guess that
- 20:09those first cases of this in doing.
- 20:11This. What could they possibly take
- 20:13away postseason eligibility? I don't think they are either.
- 20:17Michigan cheated their ass off and they didn't get postseason
- 20:19banned. I mean come on, that's not
- 20:20happening. Slap on the wrist, a couple,
- 20:24$100 fine probably. I don't think there's going to
- 20:28be any teeth to it. I mean, you're going to have to
- 20:30be pretty egregious, I think, to get to the point that all of a
- 20:33sudden we're going to get this, Trevor.
- 20:35Downing week to week, he didn't play the whole year.
- 20:37And even that he was week to week.
- 20:40I mean you can make the argument he was week to week, he just
- 20:43never made it. Yeah, Week 26 to week 46, he was
- 20:46week to week. Take your time out, come back.
- 20:49We'll be joined by Elliott Clef. He covers Iowa.
- 20:52That's coming up next. But by point in Iowa State, they
- 20:54could be. In the first three games they go
- 20:563 and O, they go on three. I don't think they're going on
- 20:59three, I don't think. I think South Dakota is a
- 21:01trickier spot than you think. I can't get there.
- 21:03I know, I know. How many times have you seen
- 21:06these FCS teams come in and give them fits?
- 21:09But those were programs a tier above even South Dakota.
- 21:13As good as South Dakota is right, they're always a step.
- 21:16You and I. Yeah.
- 21:18You and I. South Dakota State South Dakota
- 21:22State North. Dakota State whooped them, yes.
- 21:25I mean, they give them fits. And you know what they're going
- 21:27to be doing on Saturday, sitting in front of their TV scouting
- 21:30this Iowa State squad. And they've been preparing all
- 21:34year long for a game one when they get to play a heavy head, a
- 21:37team that won 11 games in the last year.
- 21:40You take that scalp. Miller Condon underway on
- 21:44Tuesday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 21:46Network. I'm Miller Congon, welcome back
- 21:5512:30 on a Tuesday. Still to come this hour, Mitch
- 21:58Holtis, voice of the Chiefs daily.
- 22:01Chiefs training camp report coming up in about 15 minutes.
- 22:04A little bit longer than that. Papa John's wrote the state of
- 22:08Iowa sponsor Mitch on a daily basis.
- 22:11Let's get to Elliott Clef. He covers Iowa for 24/7 sports.
- 22:15hawkeyeinsider.com. Elliott Trenton, Ken, thank you
- 22:18again for joining us this week. Appreciate you coming on.
- 22:22I want to start with kind of a question and asking most of our
- 22:26Hawkeye guests over the last little while.
- 22:28When it comes to the Hawkeye football schedule, you can't say
- 22:31Penn State or Oregon, but what's a potential game that seemingly
- 22:35everybody's looking past? But in your mind, for whatever
- 22:39reason, right or wrong that this game thinks might deserve a
- 22:44little bit closer look, what, what would that game be, Elliot?
- 22:49Yeah, Ken, the the five games on this schedule, those two that
- 22:54you mentioned, Oregon, Penn State are, are definitely the
- 22:57headliners when you first look at the schedule.
- 22:59After that, I look at at 3 separate games.
- 23:02First one's going to be probably USC because California's never
- 23:05been kind to Kirk Barron or or really the Iowa football program
- 23:09in the last like what, 50 years? The that that's one game that
- 23:15sticks out. I almost look at that one, you
- 23:17know, we we still have a lot to learn about well, one this Iowa
- 23:20team, but UFC 2 and I almost look at that one as an automatic
- 23:24loss. Like UCLA was not that good last
- 23:28year and I will went out there and and laid an egg in that
- 23:31game. Of course, Jay Higgins getting
- 23:33hurt didn't help. But then you look at at Indiana,
- 23:38which last time they came to Kinnock, I was just crushed them
- 23:41with even with Michael Pennock at the helm.
- 23:43But this is a different theme with Kurt Stignetti, I think.
- 23:46I mean, Fernando Mendoza is very legit coming over from Cal.
- 23:50And then lastly, I mean, Iowa State, like obviously Iowa State
- 23:55hasn't, hasn't beaten Iowa under Matt Campbell in in, in aim
- 24:01since Campbell took over. But we're about to release our
- 24:04our season predictions on 24/7. We're doing that tomorrow,
- 24:08myself, Dave and Sean. And I think I'm probably going
- 24:10to be the only one picking Iowa State in that game.
- 24:12But that that's one that could definitely dictate the season.
- 24:15I mean, we saw that last year, that team was looking to
- 24:18hopefully make the CFP and then losing that game.
- 24:22Well, the air kind of went out of the stadium in in a way, even
- 24:25though it was early on in the season and they lost that game
- 24:28to Ohio State, Michigan State, UCLAI mean, it just was a season
- 24:32that kind of ended up being a disappointment.
- 24:33So I would say in order of import, Iowa State probably up
- 24:38there. But Indiana, I feel like Indiana
- 24:40is a game in terms of just overlooking it.
- 24:42Indiana's got to be up there because, yeah, they lose their
- 24:45starting quarterback. They had a really easy schedule
- 24:47last year, but they bring back a really solid defense.
- 24:51They got a really good quarterback coming over in
- 24:54Mendoza. So it's got to be Indiana to me
- 24:58in terms of of a game that I think people are overlooking.
- 25:01Offensively, deep running, backroom feels like they have a
- 25:04bunch of receivers. Not sure if they're top end, but
- 25:06there's at least competent guys out there.
- 25:08The one question remains left tackle, is this Trevor Lock's
- 25:11job? I mean, would it take a a
- 25:13monstrous upset to not see him go out there and not get the
- 25:17opening snaps of the season out of left tackle?
- 25:20At this point, that's that's my read of it.
- 25:22That's that's kind of what we're hearing behind the scenes is
- 25:25that it's Lau's job to lose at this point.
- 25:27That and and you know, conjecture around Lau being the
- 25:30more high end guy, the guy with more potential, I think is
- 25:34pushing him up up there towards the top two.
- 25:37It also something that is kind of a secondary story on that
- 25:41front. Is it probably, I mean, it may
- 25:45very well push Jack Dosler to be in the backup at right tackle
- 25:48and getting him some, maybe some reps this year.
- 25:51If Jennings dunker's, you know, injuries continue his injury
- 25:54this offseason, it continues to linger.
- 25:56And that also preps Jack Dosler to take over right tackle next
- 26:00season with Lauk presumably is your starter going into next
- 26:03year as well at left tackle. So to me, it's Lau's jobs to
- 26:07lose at this point. And and he he kind of fits the
- 26:11mold of what Iowa is right now. And like more or less what they
- 26:14have been is their strength is going to be running the ball.
- 26:17Their strength is going to be the play action pass.
- 26:19And and he kind of falls into that mold alongside the Jennings
- 26:23dunker, the Logan Jones, the both Steven.
- 26:25So not only not only the high end point of, you know, him
- 26:29being a four-star recruit who had offers from Ohio State and
- 26:31Michigan, but also the fact that he just kind of fits the mold
- 26:34right now of what they want to do.
- 26:36He's not a prototypical left tackle size and and of course
- 26:39he's he's going to have his his struggles being in his first
- 26:42year starting. But but it is it is Laos job, at
- 26:45least from what I can tell right now.
- 26:47What? What have you heard?
- 26:49And I don't think you guys have an available coach availability
- 26:51this week. So where's Moulton and
- 26:53Patterson, both of whom were nicked up as far as their
- 26:56availability for the Albany game?
- 26:58Do we expect both of them to play?
- 27:01For right now, I would say so if a Patterson, as far as I know,
- 27:05he's good to go. Washington was the one that that
- 27:07sat out for Kids Day and he's been one that's that's been
- 27:10banged up a little bit. We might see, you know, a good
- 27:14chunk of those young running backs just so the the guys can
- 27:17that that are upper towards the top, can get a little healthy.
- 27:21Like I said, as far as I know, Jazz Patterson is is going to be
- 27:23good to go. But if they, you know, if they
- 27:26do sit out, if they do, you know, rest, it wouldn't
- 27:28necessarily surprise me for that first week because Albany is
- 27:32terrible. Like if we're being real,
- 27:35they've been a program that has been good in in recent memory.
- 27:38I guess that's, yes, they're in the SBS, but with the amount of
- 27:41turnover that they've had and as far as the roster, new head
- 27:45coach, like the IT should be just a win based on talent and
- 27:49size and ability to recruit alone for Iowa, one of those
- 27:52games. So it wouldn't shock me if you
- 27:55know Moulton in Washington, just just a sideline for that first
- 27:59game. As far as the timeline, I'm not
- 28:01entirely sure, but but yeah, I mean, it wouldn't it wouldn't be
- 28:04that much of a surprise to see some of those younger guys like
- 28:07Xavier Williams, who we've heard good things about, like Nathan
- 28:10McNeil, who may very well burn his red shirt in Year 1.
- 28:14But. But having Jazz Patterson out
- 28:16there probably to lead the group, if that, you know,
- 28:20scenario does come to fruition, will will provide a little bit
- 28:23of confidence and a guy that's been there done that and that we
- 28:25know is really hard to tackle. So, yeah, yeah, like I said, I
- 28:30don't really know the timeline with with those top two guys,
- 28:33but it also wouldn't surprise me if they're they're back and
- 28:36ready to go. Some of those injuries and
- 28:38offseason Nixon bruises can can be a little tricky.
- 28:41But yeah, I it would, you know, not season ending by any means
- 28:45at all for those top guys. All right, Elliot, it's time to
- 28:48have the marker now. Ski question.
- 28:51It's a prerequisite. As we talked about the
- 28:53quarterback position at Iowa Kids date, saw some good things,
- 28:56also some things that maybe kind of leave you scratching.
- 28:59There's been some reports that are out there, including you
- 29:00guys at Hawkeye Insider. This hasn't been 100% right.
- 29:03It hasn't been perfect by any means.
- 29:06Him coming off the injury, understanding the new offense,
- 29:09all the things. Can you tell us kind of the
- 29:10latest and give us the latest Intel that you have on the camp
- 29:13that we've heard from Mark Gordowski?
- 29:16Yeah. You know, like you said, it
- 29:18hasn't been perfect, and I think expecting it to be perfect
- 29:21isn't, you know, really rational.
- 29:25I mean, bringing a guy in from the FCS and considering, you
- 29:28know, the difficulties of The Cave McNamara era and having
- 29:30those high expectations, it's just not fair.
- 29:33Now, you know, something that I've said to you guys multiple
- 29:36times is that it is a different situation.
- 29:38Mark Granowski is a different leader in that respect.
- 29:42And he's got the experience. He's done a lot of really good
- 29:45things. They did a lot of really good
- 29:47things. South Dakota State, but right, I
- 29:49mean, it's practice in the middle of August.
- 29:53I mean, I don't know how much you guys have heard about the,
- 29:56the, the scrimmage that happened this last Saturday, but
- 30:00supposedly Mark didn't didn't play all that great, but it was
- 30:02also 120° on the field. So I'd be surprised if anybody
- 30:06played all that great. So, you know, the the offense
- 30:10has been really focused on the passing game.
- 30:13So you know, more reps, more opportunities to to make
- 30:17mistakes. So it's it's going to look less
- 30:19perfect even in that respect. But they are really focused in
- 30:22on that because the run game has been so solid and so good under
- 30:26Tim Lester. And they've got these guys,
- 30:28these young guys with experience that have been playing well and
- 30:31picking up the offense. So the focus has really been in
- 30:33the past game and it's provided a lot of opportunities for Mark
- 30:36to continue to grow in the respect of building chemistry.
- 30:41And I have heard he's starting to sharpen up a little bit in
- 30:43terms of minimizing the turnovers, minimizing the botch
- 30:46snaps, minimizing those type of things and and hitting more
- 30:50throws with a more consistent basis.
- 30:53Is it perfect? Is it, you know, the the
- 30:56greatest offense then I don't know the the run and gun of
- 31:012002. Probably not like that's a safe
- 31:05bet to say not at this point in time, but they are starting and
- 31:09work some things out. And I, I, I do still have
- 31:12relatively higher expectations for Granowski as opposed to
- 31:16maybe other quarterbacks of the last decade.
- 31:18But yeah, it's, it's not going to come, You know, it's not
- 31:22going to come without its issues.
- 31:24Like Mark Gronowski is going to throw an interception.
- 31:26There's going to be fumble this year.
- 31:27Like that's, that's, it's not going to be perfect, but but it
- 31:31will be better. And, and there are going to be
- 31:34struggles at this point in the year.
- 31:35They're really just figuring things out still.
- 31:37And they've got a couple weeks to, to, to continue to figure it
- 31:40out. And I, I, I do think that the
- 31:42offense is going to get progressively better throughout
- 31:44the, the fall. So you're going to see you're
- 31:47going to see some rust I think to start the year.
- 31:51But as long as they can get past that Iowa State game and and
- 31:54make it unscathed, I think they have a real opportunity to to
- 31:57have some serious offensive success this year, particularly
- 32:02in the passing game once they get some of those things worked
- 32:05out. If he throws a pick in that
- 32:06first series, Oh my gosh, yeah, grumbling.
- 32:10Hey, last thing for you. But we've got about a minute
- 32:12left here, Elliot, when when we do get a depth chart, I guess
- 32:15that'll be Monday, right of of next of next week.
- 32:19Is there an or between Brown and Heklinski or just Brown?
- 32:23Does he outright win the backup job?
- 32:25Because we I keep hearing good things about Heklinski and if he
- 32:29was here in the spring, this thing would be a real fight.
- 32:33Yeah, yeah. I would say if he was in the
- 32:36spring, I would be more inclined to say that there's an OR
- 32:39between those two. But right now it's Brown.
- 32:42I mean, he's been taking reps for one too.
- 32:43They've been splitting reps with him and Mark Granowski.
- 32:46So and obviously he didn't look great with the ones at Kids Day,
- 32:49but Brown is really impressed. Like I'm sure you guys have
- 32:53heard the quote from Tim Lester saying he had an unbelievable
- 32:56camp. I mean, he's he's legit like
- 33:00we'll probably be talking more about the OR or or who, you
- 33:04know, takes over the starting job between those two next year.
- 33:07But for right now, I think it's Brown as as the backup.
- 33:10And I think he's pretty firmly the backup with Hecklinski
- 33:13having basically just arrived. It's it's just different, right?
- 33:16Like, and there's the age difference.
- 33:19So So to me, it's pretty firmly that pretty firm rather that
- 33:22that Hank Brown is QB 2 for the Hawk.
- 33:25Good stuff Elliot, as always, appreciate your we'll run you
- 33:28down next week, Sir. Thank you Elliot Cliff,
- 33:30appreciate you coming on. Sounds good.
- 33:32Thanks guys. Yep, good to talk to you,
- 33:34Elliot. Cliff, as we check in on the
- 33:36Hawks, Mitch Holtis is Nexus his daily Chiefs training camp
- 33:38report. Papa John's throughout Iowa
- 33:40sponsor those Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 33:43Network. Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome
- 33:52back, Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trenton, Ken with you until
- 33:552:00. Let's get to the voice of the
- 33:58Kansas City Chiefs. Mitch Holt's daily Chiefs
- 34:01training camp reports. Papa John's throughout the state
- 34:04of Iowa, headquartered in Johnson and the Donaldson family
- 34:06does such great work both with their grub, the pizza and what
- 34:10they do philanthropically. And we'll get to them in just a
- 34:13couple of moments. But Mitch, good to speak with
- 34:15you as always. I want to go.
- 34:17We're going to talk today about the Ashton Gelati.
- 34:20And I think back, Trent was on vacation so we wouldn't remember
- 34:23this. He wasn't here.
- 34:25I think it was probably day one, if it wasn't day one, it was day
- 34:282. Very early in our conversations,
- 34:31Ashton Gelotti's name came up. Because I remember I couldn't
- 34:33pronounce it. I was glad you did.
- 34:36So he he's caught your eye, I guess where I'm going here
- 34:39throughout training camp, but he's in the focus here today.
- 34:44Yeah. And the new special has come
- 34:46from, I couldn't even tell you this.
- 34:48There's a new R&D location near Mitchellville, but I I can't.
- 34:53You get close to it, Trent. Don't get close to it.
- 34:56You'll end up being fish bait in the South Skunk River.
- 35:00Yeah, you don't want to be fish bait in the South Skunk River.
- 35:03All right, that's the Donaldson. So they got this moving lab, but
- 35:07you'll be like trying to get to the B2 at Whiteman Air Force
- 35:10Base. All right, Gelati, third round
- 35:13pick again. This looks like the third round
- 35:15has been the money round for the Chiefs, Kelsey down through the
- 35:19years and others. But this guy can I'm going to
- 35:22tell you guy, he looks like his body type's a little bit
- 35:26different. He's got more of a bow.
- 35:27So look to him than the other guys that we've got.
- 35:30He's got like broader shoulders. He's super athletic and powerful
- 35:34and he has made an impact and he's kind of been overshadowed
- 35:38because of all the talk about Josh Simmons and even Jalen
- 35:41Royals. But this guy, Gelati, couldn't
- 35:44make his big impact as any rookie we've got now.
- 35:48I ask him about, you know, fighting through camp.
- 35:50His kids tough, but he's also athletic for Steeler fans.
- 35:54He'll give you a little bit of the Watt boys.
- 35:57Not trying to get ahead of myself, but he looks like that.
- 35:59But I ask Ashton, fighting through camp.
- 36:02Obviously camp's tough. I mean, camp's always going to
- 36:05be tough, but especially getting it out when you're tired, long
- 36:09drive, drill, special teams, all that.
- 36:12So being able to make sure you just continue to push, I mean,
- 36:15that's that's what again, you got to be able to do it late,
- 36:17late in the game. Excited to you for your fit in
- 36:20this defense. And what have you learned so far
- 36:22of like, oh man, this is a perfect place to be.
- 36:24Now it's a great place. Obviously I have a lot of trust
- 36:26and Spags and what Coach Collins have been showing me and I'm
- 36:30just really willing and able to serve, you know what I'm saying?
- 36:33Just I. Asked George about you.
- 36:34I'm going to ask you about George and how much he's helped
- 36:36you and the fact that you guys kind of come in there like
- 36:38brothers. Yeah.
- 36:39George is like a, like a, like a shadow mentor.
- 36:42He doesn't, he doesn't say much, but when he speaks, I know you
- 36:45got to listen. He's always there, he's always
- 36:48watching. He's very attentive, so very
- 36:50smart guy, very technical. And he just, he gets it.
- 36:53He gets it done. And you know, just watching him
- 36:57is is one of the best ways to learn.
- 37:00Ken, I'm going to give you the Broncos some credit here.
- 37:02They've built a great defensive front.
- 37:05The Nick Benitos of the world, right?
- 37:07Zach Allen underrated. This kid is in that same genre.
- 37:11He will make an impact. Wait till you see him.
- 37:13You'll go. When did they get Nick Bosa?
- 37:15But that's what it looks like. And we got him in the third
- 37:17round. Athletic, he'll play special
- 37:19teams, explosive. He's just kind of under the
- 37:21radar because of these other guys. 39 sacks a year ago for
- 37:25the Chiefs. What's a target number?
- 37:27See that getting the quarterback at a higher rate this year?
- 37:30Here Is is 50 a realistic possibility?
- 37:33It has to be in my opinion to go next notch up and I will tell
- 37:37you they they've got to get pressure with four Trent.
- 37:40There has to be more snaps for the teeth to get more pressure
- 37:43with four guys and not just blitz and do 1 of Spegs exotic
- 37:47exotic blitzes. They were 26 in the league.
- 37:49I keep saying that in 3rd down, but they had a third and 13 the
- 37:53other night and the Seahawks get 14 yards.
- 37:55That's got it. That's got to go away for the
- 37:57chiefs to repeat in the division which is improved.
- 37:59We all know that they've got to be better at getting a four man
- 38:02rush and then getting there and it's not just the Sachs trend,
- 38:05it's the pressures. This kid Gelati was top five in
- 38:08the last two years at Louisville and all of FBS.
- 38:11All of them. Think of all those guys included
- 38:13in that of all the first round draft picks, top five in
- 38:17pressures. It's also about pressures and
- 38:19quarterback hits, enforcing or passes, defense knocked down,
- 38:23passes, the line of scrimmage. All of that adds up, including
- 38:26sacks, to give you a impactful defensive front like the Broncos
- 38:30have. Is there a a veteran or two
- 38:33Mitch that are really being pushed by some of these young
- 38:36guys like a Gelati, you know, some and some somebody that
- 38:40comes to mind that was a big part of this Chiefs team, but
- 38:42now this youth is starting to push.
- 38:46Mike Dana would be there not that he's bad.
- 38:48He's been some really good for us and I'm he's not in trouble.
- 38:51He's going to make the team, but in Geladi his you know, push to
- 38:57at least up to his status. Another one be Felix and Udiki
- 39:01Ozama, but we just put him on injured reserve yes.
- 39:03So he's done for the year with the hamstring serious hamstring
- 39:07injury. So concern for him.
- 39:09You know he's great at K state big toll defensive player of the
- 39:11year. He gets hurt again, but I would
- 39:13say Dana, I'll get a lot of snaps, but that that allows Dana
- 39:18to move inside and some of this combo inside, outside.
- 39:21But Geladi gives you explosiveness.
- 39:23He's different than Carloptus. Carloptus looks like a Sam
- 39:25Hendrickson type. But Geladi will just wait till
- 39:28you see him. And I don't want to get ahead of
- 39:30myself. I'm not calling him the the
- 39:31Bosses or the Watts, but he's got more of that kind of body
- 39:34type and yet he's still explosive and athletic.
- 39:37We shortchanged our fine sponsor yesterday.
- 39:39Let's give them their due. Let's talk about Papa John's and
- 39:42the Donalds. Yes, Trent.
- 39:44Trent, how many guys are on a basketball team?
- 39:46Well, basketball team like 13 at the collegiate level.
- 39:50No, I'm starting the starting. Oh. 5. 5 Five cheese garlic
- 39:56crust one topping pizza came out of this roving lab in
- 40:01Mitchellville. It's still there now, but a red
- 40:03dot is on your head, everybody if you try to find it.
- 40:06Red dot on your head 5 cheese, garlic crust, one topping.
- 40:10Wait for it, wait for it, 1199. How can they?
- 40:14Sell it. So 1199, your favorite number 11
- 40:16If I say #11 what? Comes to mind Drew Bledsoe.
- 40:21Drew Bledsoe and Wayne Gretzky. There you go.
- 40:23Drew Bledsoe, Wayne Gretzky for the five cheese garlic crust.
- 40:26One topic. Good stuff, brother.
- 40:28We'll, we'll talk to you tomorrow.
- 40:29Thank you pal. See you fellas.
- 40:31Yep, see you Mitch Holtz is the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 40:34Chiefs daily training camp report.
- 40:36Alex Smith Why did that jump in my head for 11?
- 40:39Don't know. Bledsoe for me.
- 40:40Hour 2 next. Mazatani on the Vikings kicks it
- 40:43off.
