- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17OK before I start today guys I have to issue an apology and an
- 0:23official correction. So a few days ago I reported on
- 0:27like Charlie XCX and Lord and their friendship history slash
- 0:32drama. I got the timeline of their
- 0:36history from a reputable, I thought, entertainment site.
- 0:41I mean, I still would consider them reputable.
- 0:43However, one of the details that they shared, which I then shared
- 0:47with you guys was that that interview from 2014 where the
- 0:52interviewer mistakes Charlie XCX for Lorde and asks her how did
- 0:56you come up with the song for Royals?
- 0:58Anyways, that was a skit and I think that this shows that a lot
- 1:04of us didn't know the lore properly because I actually
- 1:06normally like when we mess up on this podcast, somebody will like
- 1:10slide into the DMS. It's never in any type of like rude way.
- 1:13It's always just people being like FYI like this was slightly
- 1:16wrong or whatever. No one messaged, no one said
- 1:20anything. The only reason why I know this
- 1:22is because I made a TikTok on Centennial World's TikTok like
- 1:26breaking down their history and that didn't even go viral or
- 1:29anything. It only got like 60,000 views
- 1:32but the comments were filled like the with the meanest
- 1:35comments ever because I got that wrong.
- 1:37And once I started to see people be like it was a skit, I
- 1:39obviously looked into it and then I was like Oh my God, I
- 1:41actually am so embarrassed. So official correction, I didn't
- 1:47Fact Check properly and I spread some fake news and I am very
- 1:50sorry. So that was a joke.
- 1:52It was a skit. Everything else about that story
- 1:55was real. That skit happened, you know,
- 1:58but it was like not a real interview.
- 2:00This is so dramatic. But I'm sure some of you guys
- 2:02can relate to this because I had this like mess up around that
- 2:05situation and I've been like obsessed with Brat, the album
- 2:09and the deluxe album. And I've been listening to it
- 2:11like literally non-stop. And then yesterday when I
- 2:13discovered that I messed this up.
- 2:15Now I just can't listen to it anymore because it makes me like
- 2:18cringe. But anyways, I am sorry for
- 2:21spreading fake news. Hopefully Charlie XC XS fan base
- 2:23will forgive me. I don't think they will because
- 2:25they were super super mad at me on TikTok.
- 2:29But please forgive me. OK?
- 2:31Anyways, let's just get into the stories today.
- 2:34So the first story that I have for you guys is that Doctor
- 2:37Disrespect has admitted that he was sending inappropriate
- 2:40messages to a minor and this is what got him banned on Twitch.
- 2:44So this is probably the biggest story on the Internet right now.
- 2:48So in 2020, Doctor Disrespect, whose real name is Guy Beam, was
- 2:52removed from Twitch suddenly with no explanation.
- 2:56He had over 4 million followers, which is one of the biggest
- 2:59streamers on the platform at the time.
- 3:01Twitch followers are very different than Instagram or
- 3:04TikTok followers, for example. So 4,000,000 is massive.
- 3:08So he had maintained that he didn't know why he got banned.
- 3:11And over the years, everyone's just kind of chalked it up to
- 3:14some like mystery that we might never know.
- 3:17However, on Friday, former Twitch employee Cody Connors
- 3:22tweeted an ominous post which was essentially widely accepted
- 3:26to be about doctor disrespect. He didn't name him, but he wrote
- 3:30he got banned because got caught sexting a minor in the then
- 3:33existing Twitch Whispers product.
- 3:36He was trying to meet up with her at Twitchcon.
- 3:38The powers that be could read in plain text.
- 3:41Case closed, gang. So everyone was like, this has
- 3:44to be about doctor disrespect. And there was just so much like
- 3:48noise around this that a few days later, Doctor Disrespect
- 3:53released his own statement. So he said hello.
- 3:57I'd like to make a quick statement.
- 3:58This was on Twitter. Let's cut the fucking bullshit.
- 4:00As you know, there's no filter with me.
- 4:02I've always been upfront and real with you guys on anything
- 4:04that I can be upfront about, and I'm always willing to accept
- 4:07responsibility, which is why I'm here.
- 4:09Now. First and foremost I do want to
- 4:11apologize to everyone in my community as well as those close
- 4:14to me and my team and everyone at Midnight Society Game Studio.
- 4:18A lot of people have been left in the dark about what happened
- 4:20yesterday with Midnight Society and I and we made the painful
- 4:23decision collectively to have me step down South.
- 4:26Midnight Society was a company that he Co founded.
- 4:28Everyone has been wanting to know why I was banned from
- 4:31Twitch, but for reasons outside of my control, I was not allowed
- 4:34to say anything for the last several years now that two
- 4:37former Twitch employees have publicly disclosed the
- 4:40accusations. So after Cody, sorry, I should
- 4:42have said this, but after Cody published that tweet, another
- 4:45former Twitch employee came out and confirmed to The Verge that
- 4:49this story was accurate. So I assume that is what he
- 4:51means by the two Twitch employees publicly disclosing
- 4:54this. He says I can now tell you my
- 4:56side of the story regarding the ban.
- 4:57Were there Twitch whisper messages with an individual
- 5:00minor back in 2017? The answer is yes.
- 5:04Were there real intentions behind these messages?
- 5:07The answer is absolutely not. These were casual mutual
- 5:10conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction
- 5:13of being inappropriate, but nothing more.
- 5:16Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes
- 5:19were committed. I never even met the individual.
- 5:21I went through a lengthy arbitration regarding a civil
- 5:24dispute with Twitch and that case was resolved by a
- 5:27settlement. Let me be clear, it was not a
- 5:29criminal case against me and no criminal charges have ever been
- 5:32brought against me. OK, so this statement also did
- 5:37not clarify, which many people have pointed out if he did or
- 5:40did not know that this person was a minor because of course,
- 5:43we have seen this kind of situation happened a lot of
- 5:46times, you know, on the Internet with different creators.
- 5:49And usually they will say the defense of I didn't know that
- 5:53this person was a minor. You know, in the case of James
- 5:55Charles, he said that the people that he was sexting, he didn't
- 5:59know. They said that they were 18, but
- 6:00they were actually, you know, 16 or 17 or whatever.
- 6:04He never said that Doctor disrespect never said that in
- 6:07the statement. So a lot of people have pointed
- 6:09out that like, he probably did know that they were a minor
- 6:12because if he didn't, if he really felt like he was duped or
- 6:15he just had no idea, he probably would have said that in this
- 6:19statement. And you know, like I said, this
- 6:23is not anywhere close to the first time that we have seen
- 6:26something like this happen in the creator space.
- 6:28I'm actually #1 very surprised that Twitch D platformed him.
- 6:31That's actually a great move. I'm surprised that they did that
- 6:34because we so rarely see platforms take action like that
- 6:38against creators in this situation.
- 6:40I suppose because it was happening on their platform.
- 6:43That was probably the line that they felt was crossed that like
- 6:47gave them the incentive is not the right word, but like the OK,
- 6:50the permission, the IT, it gave them like what they needed to
- 6:56make the decision to de platform him.
- 6:58It seems to be very easy to foster inappropriate
- 7:02relationships with a young fan base or if you have a young fan
- 7:05base, because the parasocial relationships for these fans are
- 7:09so strong. And there's already such a power
- 7:13imbalance, like such a crazy power dynamic going on there.
- 7:18When you are messaging somebody that you watch who's famous, who
- 7:21has way more money than you, that you're obsessed with,
- 7:24whether you're a minor or not. Like if I was out here DM ING
- 7:27Trisha Paytas, there would be a huge power dynamic, a huge power
- 7:30imbalance because I have a parasocial relationship with
- 7:33her. So if she was asking me to do
- 7:35things, I might say yes. And that would be even stronger
- 7:38if you were a young person who has been watching this person,
- 7:41looking up to them for so long. This creator, you know, fame
- 7:44goes to your head and you start to feel like you're kind of
- 7:47untouchable, I think because you're probably surrounded by so
- 7:50many yes men. There's people constantly
- 7:53wanting to take, take, take from you.
- 7:55And I believe that the hype that you get as a famous person, even
- 8:00as a creator, because creators get a lot of hate too,
- 8:02obviously. But I do believe that the hype
- 8:06that you get, you would, it would be hard not to start
- 8:08believing it, right? You're like, well, everybody's
- 8:11telling me that I'm so amazing and I actually do have this
- 8:14really crazy career and I actually am really famous and
- 8:16actually do make a lot of money. So maybe they're right.
- 8:19Like maybe I am special. That would just be constantly
- 8:22confirmed to you, I think, if you were one of the biggest
- 8:25creators on the Internet. And so you start to feel
- 8:28untouchable. You start to feel like you can
- 8:31do whatever you want. You start to feel like you are
- 8:33almost like God, maybe, I don't know if that's like a big call,
- 8:37but you know, you feel like you can probably do whatever you
- 8:40want, get away with whatever you want and that you have would
- 8:43have such an ego problem. I assume that it's like what
- 8:46you're doing isn't actually that bad.
- 8:48I do believe that most of the creators who have been in this
- 8:52type of situation, maybe this is me being too nice and giving
- 8:55them the benefit of the doubt. It doesn't excuse what they did,
- 8:57but I'm believing, choosing to believe that they have justified
- 9:02it to themselves in some way. It's like when you think like
- 9:05something's not going to happen to you, you're like, oh, yeah,
- 9:07there's obviously predators on the Internet who are messaging
- 9:10minors, but like, I'm not a predator.
- 9:11You know, like that could never be me.
- 9:13It's like, no, that's actually the definition of a predator.
- 9:16So I believe that is where some of this comes from because, you
- 9:19know, whenever anything like this happens, I'm like, how is
- 9:21this keep happening? Like, how is this happening
- 9:23again? So that is kind of my theory
- 9:25behind it, But let me know what you guys think.
- 9:28OK, The next story that I have for you guys, I don't even know.
- 9:31I don't even know. I don't even know.
- 9:32I have to cover the story because Brooke Schofield over
- 9:36The Last Day has uploaded A-15 part TikTok series exposing
- 9:42Clinton Kane, her ex-boyfriend. And it's so wild.
- 9:46She's talked about the Clinton situation many times before, but
- 9:50this was the first time I believe that she has sat down
- 9:52and like, told the story, I believe from like beginning to
- 9:55end. It's so interesting.
- 9:58So you guys have to go watch it. But basically, Clinton is
- 10:00promoting his new album and he posted a TikTok says when you've
- 10:04been over the relationship for two years, but she won't stop
- 10:07yapping. And then his song plays over it.
- 10:11So Brooke was like, oh, really? OK, You want to call me up for
- 10:16yapping? I'll fucking yap.
- 10:17And then she made this 15 part TikTok series and she talks
- 10:21about how they met. He slid into her DMS. He was
- 10:24like obsessed with her. He would message her all the
- 10:26time. She said she never wanted to
- 10:28meet him because he would always be like, you know, let me fly
- 10:30you out to like Las Vegas. And she was like, no.
- 10:33Then he was coming to LA for a show.
- 10:34So she went to the show. She started hanging out with him
- 10:37with some of her friends. And she got like, really into
- 10:39him because, I don't know, she kind of explained it.
- 10:41Like she didn't say this, but it sounded like he kind of had
- 10:44swag. You know, they got into a very
- 10:46serious relationship. It sounded like very fast.
- 10:48They basically moved in together, like right away.
- 10:51And she said that he wouldn't, like, let her leave.
- 10:53I don't think they were like, officially moved in together.
- 10:55She didn't really clarify that. But they like, we're living
- 10:57together and he wouldn't let her leave to go home and, like, get
- 11:01different clothes. Like, he was like, really
- 11:03obsessed with her, like constantly staying, like,
- 11:05basically under his surveillance.
- 11:07He had told her all these things over the course of their
- 11:11relationship getting really serious really quickly.
- 11:13He told her, well, he was, you know, claiming to be from
- 11:16Australia, that his mother, father and sibling died all
- 11:23within the same year. And he would gaslight her and
- 11:26manipulate her, like, almost like weaponize that story
- 11:30against her to get her to do things that he wanted.
- 11:32Like, at one point, he got really mad at her for being on
- 11:35her phone when she was at dinner with him.
- 11:37They went on like this weekend getaway and she was on her
- 11:39phone. And he like, flipped out being
- 11:42like, my mom neglected me. And she would always ignore me
- 11:44during dinner time. And this is like a trigger for
- 11:46me. And she's like, you know, he had
- 11:49this, like, horrible, like, story, this back story.
- 11:52So I just always felt like I had to give him more grace.
- 11:55So there was a few things she said that like, started to
- 11:57happen. Like, for example, they got
- 12:00pulled over on the way to this road trip and he gave, you know,
- 12:04his license and it was Australian, but it said that he
- 12:08was born in 1999. So he was lying.
- 12:12I think he was. She said he was supposed to be
- 12:15one year younger than her. And it turned out he was four
- 12:17years younger than her, but he played it off.
- 12:19He's like, oh, I actually have a fake ID because she was like,
- 12:21wait, is that actually when you were born?
- 12:23And he was like, no, no, I have a fake ID.
- 12:25And she was like, who has a fake ID to make themselves look
- 12:28younger? And then he was promoting an
- 12:30album. He went on the Zack Sang show
- 12:32and on that show he's talking about Australia and like his
- 12:35family and stuff. And then she said she was in bed
- 12:37with him one night after this interview.
- 12:39He's like yelling at his manager that he needs to get the
- 12:42interview from Zach, saying taken down like at any cost.
- 12:46And Brooke was like, why? So she like gets on her phone,
- 12:48looks on the YouTube video and there's all these comments and
- 12:51one of the comments says, not sure where this Australian
- 12:54accent came from, but I grew up with this guy.
- 12:56Like in the USI know his family went to school with him.
- 13:00I know his family. I saw his mom literally last
- 13:03week. So then she starts looking up
- 13:05his mom. She does find her on Facebook.
- 13:07She sees that the life that he told her that he grew up with
- 13:11was like so obviously not true. Like it was all a lie.
- 13:14She said she wasn't still sure if she was like alive or not.
- 13:17He had like lied to her about everything.
- 13:19Like he said he grew up in Perth, Australia in some like
- 13:22massive mansion on the beach, that his mom was a pastor at
- 13:25Hillsong which is like a church here.
- 13:27She had all these different businesses like.
- 13:29Anyways, it all turned out to be these lies and she talks about
- 13:31how it wasn't until she found out that he had been cheating on
- 13:36her multiple times that she ended up ending it.
- 13:39But like, there were so many red flags throughout it and he had
- 13:42just been this alleged pathological liar the whole
- 13:46time. So it is very interesting.
- 13:48That is my synopsis of it. So interesting.
- 13:51So definitely go watch it. OK, the next story that I have
- 13:53for you guys is that Sabrina Carpenter has celebrated her
- 13:57first ever #1 Billboard hit and she has done it by posting a
- 14:02hate tweet which has been highly controversial.
- 14:05Sabrina posted on Instagram today.
- 14:07My first number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and espresso
- 14:10at number four. First number one, as in please,
- 14:13please, please, I'm very immensely grateful.
- 14:15So I will surely always remember this day for the rest of my
- 14:18life. And then she thanks her team.
- 14:20So Sabrina had, you know, shared the music video for please,
- 14:23please, please on Twitter. And then this account had quote
- 14:27tweeted her and wrote, I don't think I've ever seen someone
- 14:30fumble a second single this hard.
- 14:32My goodness. So she had included that tweet
- 14:34in the carousel at the end. So people were like, Oh my God,
- 14:37that's so funny. And then that that same guy, his
- 14:40name is Chase, that same guy, he went back in and he commented on
- 14:44Instagram and he wrote, Congrats, diva made me eat my
- 14:47words. And then Sabrina wrote, love ya,
- 14:50you inspired me. So what has been controversial
- 14:53about this is that this man who tweeted this, she kept his full
- 14:59photo and his handle. So people found him on Twitter
- 15:03and they found this tweet. And the tweet was literally just
- 15:07almost immediately filled up with people saying the worst
- 15:10things about this man, like really homophobic things about
- 15:13this man, just like horrible, disgusting things.
- 15:16And you know, this is part of a bigger conversation that I'm
- 15:19super interested to hear if you guys have opinions on this
- 15:22'cause I don't know where I stand on this.
- 15:24When celebrities or really big influencers post, you know,
- 15:27identifying qualities, whether it's like a photo, a name, a
- 15:32handle of someone who sends them like criticism or hate.
- 15:36I think it probably depends on the level of what they've
- 15:40received. I think if you are like
- 15:42genuinely using hate speech at someone, then if you are, you
- 15:46know, whoever, whoever you are, you have every right to post
- 15:49that person, put them on blast. But for this, I think it's a bit
- 15:53controversial because she is so famous and obviously we know how
- 15:57die hard music stands are just like celebrity stands in
- 16:00general. People rushed to his Twitter to
- 16:03basically bully and harass him. I'm interested to know how you
- 16:07guys feel about that. A lot of people are like, she
- 16:09should have not kept his name in, She should have not kept his
- 16:12photo in. And then other people are like,
- 16:14if you're going to publicly post something like that, like he
- 16:16posted it on Twitter. He posted it on a public forum.
- 16:20However, the hate did get so bad that he first privated his
- 16:24Twitter and then he has since deleted his Twitter.
- 16:28So that's not a good sign. I don't know, I'm interested to
- 16:32hear what you guys think. I think she was doing it as a
- 16:34joke. I think we all know that she has
- 16:36like a really cheeky sense of humor.
- 16:38But I do agree that maybe just because she was doing it in jest
- 16:43and like clearly wasn't actually like upset about it.
- 16:45Well, she was probably upset about it at the time, but like,
- 16:48upset about it now, posting it in this carousel.
- 16:51She probably should have blocked his handle out.
- 16:53I don't know. OK.
- 16:54And the last story that I have for you guys, again, this is a
- 16:56long week of news. So Lila Gibney has been facing
- 17:01backlash for posting content from Alex and Kover's wedding
- 17:04before they posted. So Lila Gibney, we know she's an
- 17:09influencer. She's in the news media a lot
- 17:11because I think she does some controversial stuff, but she
- 17:15also used to be like really close with Tana Mojo and then
- 17:18Tana and her had a big falling out.
- 17:20Tana and Brooke have spoke about that on their podcast a little
- 17:22bit. So she's been kind of in the
- 17:24media because of that. Anyway, so Lila went to Alex
- 17:28Warren and Kover Anon's wedding last weekend and one day after
- 17:32the wedding she posted a vlog titled I caught the bouquet at
- 17:36Alex and Kover's wedding. So this wedding documented them
- 17:39driving to the wedding, you know, the ceremony, reception,
- 17:41everything. You could basically see like the
- 17:43full wedding, you could see what they looked like, all their
- 17:47special moments. So Alex and Kover hadn't
- 17:50actually posted anything formal from their wedding when this
- 17:53vlog went up. They had posted like behind the
- 17:56scenes snippets on TikTok, but they hadn't posted anything
- 18:00official or like formal. So TikTok user at Maddie's
- 18:03basement posted a video asking people if this was a crazy take
- 18:08that a guest posting a vlog about their wedding was not the
- 18:11right time or place. Quote, it's a wedding.
- 18:14It's not a theme park. They said, imagine it's your
- 18:16turn to go talk to this bride and groom.
- 18:18Oh my God, celebrating your love.
- 18:20And you're like, wait, wait, let's vlog.
- 18:23OK, so everybody kind of knew that this was about Alex and
- 18:28Cover and the Lila situation. And then Cover commented on this
- 18:33video writing period. And then Alex commented on it
- 18:37saying this is a very valid take.
- 18:40So clearly they were upset about Lilas blog.
- 18:44So now Lila has responded to the backlash.
- 18:46Yes, I was personally invited by Alex and Cover to their
- 18:49beautiful wedding this last weekend.
- 18:51Yes, I chose to drive 4 hours there because of course need to
- 18:55celebrate literally the most perfect couple ever.
- 18:57And then unfortunately I've blogged it and posted it and
- 19:00y'all are very very upset. So I just want to talk about it
- 19:03genuinely, genuinely from the bottom of my heart.
- 19:05I'm sorry if I offended anybody with this video, with any of my
- 19:09content. I thought that cute little VHS
- 19:11video of like literally the most beautiful wedding ever would
- 19:14make people so happy. That's my way of showing my love
- 19:16and affection honestly, is editing, creating content, my
- 19:20experiences, doing things with people that I love.
- 19:22It is so offensive to the whole world and the millions of people
- 19:25telling me to kill myself online right now.
- 19:26But there is no influencer wedding rule book.
- 19:29Honestly there was no signs. No one said it was unplugged.
- 19:33Multiple people asked the multiple people in the wedding
- 19:35party can I post, is it OK if I post?
- 19:37Everybody said yes. There was multiple other content
- 19:40creators posting. I know you guys saw it and there
- 19:43was also 40 rows of social media content creator people all
- 19:48taking content. I mean I think it's just like
- 19:51common knowledge to not post anything even like an Instagram
- 19:55story if you have 500 followers and you're on private and it's
- 19:58just your friends and family like to post nothing of the
- 20:01bride and groom unless you explicitly ask them before you
- 20:04do it. You don't want to ruin someones
- 20:06moment I feel like. Weddings are so sensitive.
- 20:10I actually have been seeing a lot of discourse about wearing
- 20:13yellow to a wedding. I don't know if you guys have
- 20:15seen that on TikTok. But like people are saying not
- 20:17to even wear yellow anymore to weddings because to a lot of
- 20:20people in in certain lighting, it can look white.
- 20:24So there's all these people that are telling stories of them
- 20:26wearing like yellow dresses to weddings and not like even light
- 20:30yellow. Like some of them are showing
- 20:31their dresses and they're like bright yellow, but in certain
- 20:33lighting or to certain people or whatever, it looks really light
- 20:37or it looks white and they're getting like called out by like
- 20:41the groom's mom or whoever for wearing white when they're
- 20:44actually wearing yellow. So I feel like weddings are just
- 20:48so sensitive and you just have to do your best to like be on
- 20:52your best behavior. You have to follow all the
- 20:55rules. It doesn't matter.
- 20:56Like it's not a click bait moment.
- 20:57Like this is somebody's like special moment that they've
- 21:00waited their whole lives for. They've spent so much money on
- 21:02like it's not for you to monopolize or like take over
- 21:05that moment from them. And that's how I feel in that.
