- 0:00Speaker 1: Far away your first section, they may, yeah, okay, yeah, Well,
- 0:02Speaker 1: I want to just tell you about a little race
- 0:06Speaker 1: last Sunday morning. Unfortunately it's one that I couldn't be
- 0:10Speaker 1: at because it wasn't very well. But let me tell
- 0:14Speaker 1: you about it. Last Sunday morning, around thirty members of
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Folks And Running and Athletics Club got together for
- 0:20Speaker 1: the annual Paul Hill Memorial Run. Now, Paul was a
- 0:24Speaker 1: very active member of the running club who tragically died
- 0:27Speaker 1: in a road accident in two thousand and four. But
- 0:30Speaker 1: back in the day, Paul and several members of the
- 0:32Speaker 1: club used to have a little off road race on
- 0:35Speaker 1: their own. They used to follow a route from Sandland
- 0:38Speaker 1: Station across country over the A twenty, then off road
- 0:43Speaker 1: right up to the telephone mast right at the top
- 0:45Speaker 1: of the aill there, and then back down towards Postling
- 0:47Speaker 1: and Sandlin Station. Now, at one point in the run
- 0:51Speaker 1: they came across a very high gate which Paul attempted
- 0:54Speaker 1: to climb over, but he fell off onto the other side.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Now the other runners rolled about with laughter as one
- 1:01Speaker 1: of them proceeded to click the latch and safely open
- 1:03Speaker 1: the gate for let all the others pass through. Well,
- 1:06Speaker 1: there's now a little memorial stone placed at this spot
- 1:09Speaker 1: and the story is recalled every year for new runners
- 1:12Speaker 1: to listen to if they're doing this for the first time.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Paul's widow, Christine and normally meets the runners back at
- 1:19Speaker 1: Sandin Station where she supplies tea and homemade cakes, helped
- 1:23Speaker 1: by a long standing friend and club member, Sue Elkins.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Paul's son Rob is always there and he's turned into
- 1:29Speaker 1: a very fine runner himself. Actually, now this social run
- 1:33Speaker 1: is an excellent tribute to Paul by the club. Many
- 1:36Speaker 1: new runners never met Paul, but go along and join in.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And I found a picture. I kept a picture of
- 1:42Speaker 1: the very very first run that was back in two
- 1:44Speaker 1: thousand and five, I think, and that includes myself. I
- 1:47Speaker 1: was running back in those days, Sue Elkins, And I
- 1:50Speaker 1: must give a mention to Clive Allen who run that
- 1:53Speaker 1: first race and then once again on Sunday twenty years
- 1:56Speaker 1: later he ran it again. So I'll bet he was
- 1:59Speaker 1: so but he was, yeah, But he's a great troop
- 2:03Speaker 1: door is Clive, and he's always got a smile on
- 2:06Speaker 1: his face. But the fact that this race is there
- 2:09Speaker 1: was a little in the clip of twenty years ago,
- 2:12Speaker 1: it said, right the last line, it said they're hoping
- 2:14Speaker 1: to make this an annual vent and it just hasn't failed,
- 2:17Speaker 1: you know. And well, as I say, unfortunately I couldn't
- 2:22Speaker 1: make it this year. But normally I take a bit
- 2:23Speaker 1: of PA system along a bit of music and everyone's
- 2:27Speaker 1: so kind of buzzing after the round, a bit of
- 2:29Speaker 1: dancing in the car park and it's lovely. Yeah. Yeah,
- 2:33Speaker 1: So it was a great tribute by the club. Cool. Yeah,
- 2:37Speaker 1: that's nice.
