Latest / Pit Talk / Oscar Piastri gets first win after team orders drama: Hungarian GP Review
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Today's episode, Oscar Piastre is Australia's fifth Formula One Grand
- 0:06Speaker 1: Prix winner after leading home a dominant McLaren one two
- 0:09Speaker 1: in Hungary that wasn't controversial in any way, and Max
- 0:12Speaker 1: for staffman doesn't win again. Instead, he fumes that Red
- 0:16Speaker 1: Bull Racing is getting complacent after a new upgrade bails
- 0:20Speaker 1: to fire. My name is Michael Lomonato, motorsport rider for
- 0:23Speaker 1: Fox Sports Australia. It's great to have your company and
- 0:26Speaker 1: the company of my co hosts from speed Cafe. He
- 0:30Speaker 1: was up until three am in the simulator, but his
- 0:32Speaker 1: performance is showing no ill effects as a result. It's
- 0:35Speaker 1: Matt Cash.
- 0:36Speaker 2: The question is it wasn't a Formula one simulator. It
- 0:38Speaker 2: was goat simulator that I was playing.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Very so you were of a farm simulator man.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Funny enough, I do have the game. I also have
- 0:45Speaker 2: truck driving simulator. I haven't yet dabbled with bus simulator,
- 0:49Speaker 2: but I'm very, very tempted.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Maybe on a quite a rare quite maybe it's a
- 0:54Speaker 1: mid season break project for you to be simulator operator.
- 1:00Speaker 2: But I can see the hours just ebbing away in
- 1:02Speaker 2: my future. I'm well spent. Don't get me wrong.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I mean I think that whenever I'm on a bus,
- 1:07Speaker 1: just think about the time ebbing away from me. That's
- 1:10Speaker 1: inaccurate simulator in that situation.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Did you just see me? We'll get to zamboge if
- 1:15Speaker 2: he stood in the corner holding an imaginary strap, pressing
- 1:18Speaker 2: imaginary button, going and ding to myself.
- 1:22Speaker 1: He's finally broken. Fust simulators finally broken. And let's move
- 1:26Speaker 1: on the matters form to one. Matt, and before we
- 1:28Speaker 1: get into a course the big events of the weekend,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and we are in the middle of a double header,
- 1:32Speaker 1: let's take you through the news you need to know
- 1:35Speaker 1: from the last week in five minutes or less, sometimes more,
- 1:38Speaker 1: though I shouldn't say all less. Usually it's actually been
- 1:41Speaker 1: usually more than five minutes. But Matt, let's start with
- 1:44Speaker 1: Kevin Magnison news that broke shortly after our previous podcast.
- 1:48Speaker 1: He has at the moment and probably in the future,
- 1:50Speaker 1: no seat for twenty twenty five after Half announced it
- 1:53Speaker 1: wouldn't be renewing his contract at the end of this season,
- 1:56Speaker 1: with Esteban Ochon expected to replace him.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I'm I love this new style of announcement where yeah,
- 2:04Speaker 2: we're not renewing his contract, but the announcement is this
- 2:06Speaker 2: guy's leaving, which we already knew.
- 2:09Speaker 1: So it was the.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Announcement of the bleeding obvious in many respects as we
- 2:13Speaker 2: all lost Esteban's confirmation there. It was expected over the
- 2:19Speaker 2: of the Hungary and Grand Prix and obviously delayed because
- 2:21Speaker 2: this way from a PR perspective, you get two bites
- 2:23Speaker 2: of the cherry. One Magnuson's leaving get headlines. Two O
- 2:25Speaker 2: Gon arrive, so you get the headlines. It's good PR.
- 2:28Speaker 2: But yeah, it's an interesting little trend.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and nice amount of respect I suppose for Kevin Magnuson. Two.
- 2:36Speaker 1: They were very effusive in their praise of his contribution
- 2:39Speaker 1: to the team, so it gave him his own little
- 2:41Speaker 1: moment to bask him being sacked. Let's move on now.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Too, contract expired.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it is quite a significant difference, of course, and
- 2:51Speaker 1: Tray give me Antonelli fresh off winning the Springe in
- 2:53Speaker 1: Silson a couple of weeks ago, He's now won a
- 2:56Speaker 1: feature race victory in Budapest. He's risen to sixth in
- 2:59Speaker 1: the Championship if as a result, he is the Mercedes
- 3:01Speaker 1: prodigy who's been connected to Lewis Hamilton's seat next season,
- 3:05Speaker 1: but after winning in Budapest, the Italian said he's not
- 3:09Speaker 1: sure if he's ready for a Formula One promotion.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Of course it's going to say that, because that's when
- 3:13Speaker 2: everyone else is saying. That's kind of the line that
- 3:15Speaker 2: Mercedes will be giving him to spout because you don't
- 3:19Speaker 2: want to give the game up at this stage. Ultimately,
- 3:21Speaker 2: who else does Mercedes have? Maybe we'll just a little
- 3:24Speaker 2: bit of that later on. But I heard a while
- 3:28Speaker 2: ago that the plan was Fantinell to do a second
- 3:30Speaker 2: year in Formula two. The prema hasn't been good. That's
- 3:33Speaker 2: the team he's driving for there with this new car,
- 3:35Speaker 2: it's just been a little bit at sea. So the
- 3:38Speaker 2: results that he's getting there, at least in the early
- 3:40Speaker 2: part of the season, were reflective of him. And the
- 3:43Speaker 2: media attention has also got to him a little bit,
- 3:45Speaker 2: I've been told, So we'll see, we'll see. I don't
- 3:49Speaker 2: know what other options they realistically.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Have, though, could be Carlos Science, which would be good
- 3:53Speaker 1: news for Jack doing it. Al that's true, it's great. Really,
- 4:01Speaker 1: Let's move on to red Bull now, and some of
- 4:03Speaker 1: the heat sort of has been taken out of Red
- 4:06Speaker 1: Bull Racing for the time being with Helmut Marco redoubling
- 4:10Speaker 1: his commitment not just to the brand map but to
- 4:12Speaker 1: team Red Bull Racing. And that's of course interesting in
- 4:15Speaker 1: relation to the clause in Maxwastappen's contract which was reported
- 4:19Speaker 1: earlier in the year that would allow him to leave
- 4:21Speaker 1: the team if Marco left the team, but now it
- 4:23Speaker 1: seems that that might be taken off the table.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it's an interesting new agreement. So Marco helped doctor
- 4:29Speaker 2: Helmt Marco has been Red bulls Motor sportifyser. That's been
- 4:33Speaker 2: a deal with Red Bull GmbH, basically the Austrian drinks
- 4:35Speaker 2: company directly. Now he has a contract with Red Bull
- 4:38Speaker 2: Racing or in agreement with Red Bull Racing or some
- 4:41Speaker 2: sort of commitment to Red Bull Racing that's been formalized,
- 4:44Speaker 2: which is a fascinating development. Exactly why and exactly what
- 4:47Speaker 2: that is, who knows, but it's an interesting thing.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it is. And apparently reportedly according to the Dutch media,
- 4:55Speaker 1: you'res for Staffen and Christian Horner are talking again, which
- 4:57Speaker 1: is remarkable. Saying with Red Bull Race, though Max Verstappen
- 5:01Speaker 1: has admitted to racing with blurred vision in the latter
- 5:05Speaker 1: half of the twenty twenty one season, he's made entitle
- 5:07Speaker 1: winning season after that fifty one g crash with Lewis
- 5:09Speaker 1: Hamilton at Silverston. He said it in an article that
- 5:12Speaker 1: appeared in the Red bullowned Red Bulletin. It's since been
- 5:15Speaker 1: taken down, or rather the part of the article in
- 5:18Speaker 1: which he referred to it's been taken down. In this
- 5:20Speaker 1: article he likened driving the bumpy circuit of the Americas
- 5:24Speaker 1: to like riding a speedboat.
- 5:27Speaker 2: That's really concerning, basically because it shows that he was
- 5:31Speaker 2: passed fit to race when he clearly wasn't. The part
- 5:34Speaker 2: of that article was he considered stopping the car, which
- 5:37Speaker 2: is pretty significant for someone like Max with Staffen, who
- 5:40Speaker 2: he doesn't stop the car and give up points for anything.
- 5:43Speaker 2: So for him to make that revelation suggests it was
- 5:46Speaker 2: pretty serious and that's alarming. Given that he was past
- 5:50Speaker 2: fit to race. There was something missed there and that
- 5:53Speaker 2: needs to be looked at pretty sharply.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I'm interesting to see if that one has followed up.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And finally, Matt unbelievably the second time, not just this year,
- 6:02Speaker 1: but I'm just looking at my calendar this month, I
- 6:04Speaker 1: think McLaren's motor home is out of action after catching
- 6:09Speaker 1: fire in Spain, had its roof ripped off by a
- 6:12Speaker 1: storm in Budapest. Coincidentally, though, Matt Lenda Norris took pole
- 6:15Speaker 1: on both races at which these disasters struck.
- 6:18Speaker 2: And for all our Australian listeners here, remember Clark and
- 6:21Speaker 2: Door if you can think back to that one about
- 6:27Speaker 2: the front fell off the boat. That kind of happened
- 6:30Speaker 2: in Monaco as well that we got there on the
- 6:32Speaker 2: Thursday and the hospitality center in the paddock didn't have
- 6:37Speaker 2: a didn't have a front of it. So yeah, they've
- 6:40Speaker 2: not had a great run of late. But I mean
- 6:44Speaker 2: ultimately this time, no massive issues other than the fact
- 6:48Speaker 2: that there's no roof on it. You know, there's no
- 6:49Speaker 2: fire or whatever. But no one went to hospital. But
- 6:53Speaker 2: it's no idea, really is it. Oscar had to use
- 6:57Speaker 2: a smaller of his driver's rooms. He's got two of them,
- 7:00Speaker 2: but it had air conditioning and in Hungry that's kind
- 7:02Speaker 2: of the one you want anyway.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Yeah, so it worked out in the end, well, it
- 7:06Speaker 1: worked out for it's worked out on track in the
- 7:08Speaker 1: end of it. I've had that motor home. It's out
- 7:09Speaker 1: of action now again. I Saly must be cursed some
- 7:13Speaker 1: other explanation for it, because this is a different I
- 7:15Speaker 1: don't know if anyone really follows motor home chat in
- 7:19Speaker 1: Formula one, but McLaren used to have what it called
- 7:22Speaker 1: the brand Center.
- 7:24Speaker 2: This is the brand Center. This structure is a more.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Modest version of it, so at the start there's no
- 7:32Speaker 1: spiral staircase.
- 7:33Speaker 2: At the start of the last year they went and
- 7:35Speaker 2: refurbished it basically to downsize, to to make logistics a
- 7:39Speaker 2: little bit more straightforward, to reduce car for and all
- 7:42Speaker 2: of that sort of stuff. I went through this rejuvenation process.
- 7:45Speaker 2: It is the brand Center, slightly different facade and internals,
- 7:50Speaker 2: but it is exactly the same structure. This thing goes
- 7:52Speaker 2: back to run Dennis back in about two thousand and five.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Isch off the top of my head. It's it's older
- 7:59Speaker 2: than Lewis Hamilton's.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Certainly showing its age at unfortunately for it.
- 8:05Speaker 2: It's yeah, yes, it's a little bit.
- 8:08Speaker 1: It is a little bit less obstentatious than the original
- 8:11Speaker 1: version of it. But well, certainly at the moment it is.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Let's move on, Matt to action on track at the
- 8:17Speaker 1: Hungarian Grand Prix, and of course Oscar Piastri's first win.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Don't talk about the sprint last year doesn't count. Very
- 8:23Speaker 1: satisfied actually that afterwards he pretty much said as much.
- 8:26Speaker 1: The sprint was nice, but this is the win that
- 8:29Speaker 1: really counted. Obviously, wasn't super straightforward in the end, despite
- 8:34Speaker 1: having the pace throughout the Grand Prix, pinching the lead
- 8:37Speaker 1: at the first turn from polgetter Orlando Norris didn't look
- 8:41Speaker 1: back after that until well, the team really made him
- 8:43Speaker 1: look back in that team orders fiasco. But let's start
- 8:46Speaker 1: with him winning that first of all, because this was
- 8:49Speaker 1: I've actually found it interesting trying to describe this variously
- 8:52Speaker 1: as being a long time coming on the one, but
- 8:55Speaker 1: it has been Formula one long enough to really be
- 8:57Speaker 1: a long time coming, I suppose, only thirty four to
- 8:59Speaker 1: thirty five races, and also in some senses quite unremarkable,
- 9:02Speaker 1: because we've all known it was going to happen sooner
- 9:05Speaker 1: or later. This win, to me almost just feels like, well,
- 9:08Speaker 1: of course he was going to win. It's a box checked,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and now let's move on to bigger and better things.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Well, I'd like to point out that he is exactly average.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Here is the fiftieth percentile when it comes to Australians
- 9:19Speaker 2: winning in Formula One in terms of the speed with
- 9:21Speaker 2: which they've done it, Jack Brabham and Alan Jones were
- 9:26Speaker 2: faster with their first wins, but Daniel Ricardo and Mark
- 9:30Speaker 2: Webble was slower. So he's exactly average when it comes
- 9:32Speaker 2: to Australians winning in Formula one them. But yeah, so
- 9:37Speaker 2: it has been both a long time coming and very quick.
- 9:43Speaker 2: But yeah, it does feel like that we've been speaking
- 9:46Speaker 2: about Oscar for so long, even the year before he
- 9:48Speaker 2: was in Formula one, he dominated that August. Obviously, he
- 9:54Speaker 2: entered the sport with a huge junior career, so he's
- 9:58Speaker 2: been on the radar four a long time. You know,
- 10:01Speaker 2: he was Kimmy Antonelli before Kimy Antonelli was So that
- 10:07Speaker 2: conversation comes with a huge amount of expectation and the
- 10:12Speaker 2: way McLaren's been traveling that you know, everythinge I think
- 10:15Speaker 2: has been on the journey with McLaren. Because if you're
- 10:19Speaker 2: a reb Bull fan or not, what you want to
- 10:20Speaker 2: see is competition. Yes, it's nice to see your team
- 10:23Speaker 2: win eight nil, nine nil, whatever, but there's nothing more
- 10:28Speaker 2: exciting than a than a one nil win. At the
- 10:32Speaker 2: end of a competitive game with the kick of the
- 10:34Speaker 2: ninetieth minute, so you want to see some competition out there.
- 10:37Speaker 2: So I think everyone was enjoying the journey with McLaren
- 10:40Speaker 2: because you could see where it was going to end up.
- 10:43Speaker 2: And to see that with Oscar as well, knowing that backstory,
- 10:46Speaker 2: knowing and you know the ringer that he went through
- 10:48Speaker 2: just to get to formula. Knowing that just makes it
- 10:51Speaker 2: a little bit more round it. We're a little bit
- 10:54Speaker 2: more invested, I think, and that's why it feels like
- 10:56Speaker 2: it's taken so long, because we'll be on this journey
- 10:58Speaker 2: with him. At the same time it feels so quick
- 11:00Speaker 2: because he's only been there for five minutes.
- 11:03Speaker 1: There's also the element that it feels like it could
- 11:05Speaker 1: have happened already this season. He has a tragically small
- 11:10Speaker 1: trophy cabinet this year when really should have had much
- 11:12Speaker 1: more silver are for mostly circumstances outside of his control.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Very rarely has it been something within his power to
- 11:18Speaker 1: have scored a better result this year. So it's also
- 11:21Speaker 1: been that element of it that it's been hard for
- 11:24Speaker 1: him to make it to that top step. Although that said,
- 11:25Speaker 1: that's been a bit of a McLaren thing as we
- 11:27Speaker 1: talked about last week, many missed opportunities by the team
- 11:31Speaker 1: and really still to still have only two wins for
- 11:33Speaker 1: this season doesn't seem right for a team that dominated
- 11:36Speaker 1: so comprehensively in Hungary. And I guess sucked into those
- 11:39Speaker 1: who wanted are closer battle because well they got a
- 11:41Speaker 1: different winner, but it wasn't much closer about it.
- 11:44Speaker 2: In the end, I was going to say, well, it
- 11:46Speaker 2: did get a little bit interesting. There was definitely some intrigue.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Yes, well, it's exactly my point, because there was one
- 11:52Speaker 1: point where it did get very close and very interesting
- 11:55Speaker 1: in the final stint, the final third of the Grand Prix,
- 11:58Speaker 1: when matt I had already written most of my report
- 12:00Speaker 1: talking about how oscopiastri had fundamentally cruised to his first
- 12:03Speaker 1: Crumfrerie win and what a result there was this team
- 12:06Speaker 1: orders debacle or well fiasco or just mind a point
- 12:09Speaker 1: of interest, depending on your perspective and whether or not
- 12:11Speaker 1: you work for McLaren. I suppose it was a very
- 12:14Speaker 1: conservative strategy from McLaren that had Lando Norris jump Oscar
- 12:18Speaker 1: piastre in and undercut they were protecting against Lewis Hamilton behind.
- 12:21Speaker 1: He wasn't really a threat, but I guess considering how much.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Just for example, we last week said they missed opportunities
- 12:27Speaker 1: they really wanted to belt embraces this one. And I
- 12:30Speaker 1: suppose Matt counted on Lando Norris and Oscopiastri's history together
- 12:36Speaker 1: the last eighteen months, but the longer history for Lando
- 12:38Speaker 1: Norris two have never really questioning team orders, never really
- 12:41Speaker 1: questioning the team in general, to just do so again,
- 12:44Speaker 1: despite the stakes for him being markedly higher with a
- 12:47Speaker 1: race wind being on the line, and I think were
- 12:50Speaker 1: surprised despite what the team said afterwards that the response
- 12:54Speaker 1: they well, at first, they got no response back and
- 12:56Speaker 1: then subsequently got various negative responses back before three laps
- 13:00Speaker 1: from the Lando Norris finally obeyed the orders.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Andrea Stella, McLaren team principal, said some interesting things post
- 13:08Speaker 2: race when questioned about this. The point that really stuck
- 13:12Speaker 2: in my crawl was the interest of the team comes first.
- 13:16Speaker 2: If you mess up on this matter, you cannot be
- 13:18Speaker 2: part of the McLaren Formula One team. The team comes first.
- 13:23Speaker 2: If you mess up, you're not part of McLaren. Lando
- 13:27Speaker 2: Norris put himself first. Okay, he eventually conceded, but he
- 13:35Speaker 2: made very clear that he put himself before the team.
- 13:40Speaker 2: And then Andrea Stella went on to defend Lando's behavior,
- 13:47Speaker 2: saying that it's sort of, you know, it's part of
- 13:50Speaker 2: bigger racing driver, you have to be selfish. It's totally understandable.
- 13:52Speaker 2: But he was absolute professional, but an absolute professional dragging
- 13:55Speaker 2: a conversation, a needless conversation up for twenty laps when
- 14:00Speaker 2: there was only ever going to be one outcome. And
- 14:03Speaker 2: if Lando hadn't seeded the place back, he'd have won
- 14:05Speaker 2: that battle, but civil war would have broken out within
- 14:10Speaker 2: the team, and Lando probably would have lost the team
- 14:13Speaker 2: in the dressing room and all those those things as well.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Because Oscar, through his eighteen months with McLaren has more
- 14:23Speaker 2: than once sacrificed himself for the greater good of the team.
- 14:26Speaker 2: He's shown himself to live by the premise that Andrea
- 14:31Speaker 2: speaks of the interest of the team comes first. Oscar
- 14:35Speaker 2: has lived by that. Lando has demonstrated that that's an
- 14:38Speaker 2: after thought. So that's one interesting point. But I do
- 14:44Speaker 2: have a little bit of empathy for the Lando because
- 14:49Speaker 2: he was put in that position and he didn't understand
- 14:51Speaker 2: how or why, And that comes back to a fundamental
- 14:55Speaker 2: communication issue from McClaren. If they'd explained to Lando, we're
- 15:01Speaker 2: going to box you to cover off the undercut from Hamilton,
- 15:05Speaker 2: you will let Oscar back through. We're protecting you in
- 15:12Speaker 2: second place. We're not giving you first, we are protecting
- 15:14Speaker 2: you in second That message never came through, and it
- 15:17Speaker 2: was only when he was in the lead, or at
- 15:19Speaker 2: least from the radio broadcast that we've had, it was
- 15:23Speaker 2: only when he was in the lead that he was
- 15:24Speaker 2: told to let Oscar back through. It's well, I'm in
- 15:28Speaker 2: front now, why would I give up that? And it's
- 15:30Speaker 2: not just giving up a lead, it's giving up seven
- 15:32Speaker 2: points in a championship fight when Max was looking at
- 15:37Speaker 2: thirty ultimately ended up fifth, but that was by the
- 15:39Speaker 2: bye he gave up seven points as well. So there
- 15:44Speaker 2: are two issues there that I didn't like about that
- 15:47Speaker 2: last third of the race. One the selfish responses from
- 15:55Speaker 2: Lando Norris, but to the way McClaren dropped minute in
- 16:01Speaker 2: the first place.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's important to emphasize that second part, in particular
- 16:07Speaker 1: that McLaren's role in this, because I've certainly seen a
- 16:10Speaker 1: lot of feedback on our Fox Sports social accounts that
- 16:14Speaker 1: it felt to some people that this was a Team
- 16:16Speaker 1: Orders victory on Piastre's behalf, when really it was the opposite.
- 16:20Speaker 1: It would have been a Team Orders defeat had he
- 16:22Speaker 1: not been soft back, and it would have been more
- 16:24Speaker 1: outrageous for that reason that the team put them in
- 16:27Speaker 1: that order. You can argue about and Piastre has been
- 16:29Speaker 1: open about the fact that he's pacing the last stint
- 16:31Speaker 1: wasn't as good as in his first two, and we
- 16:33Speaker 1: can say, well, who was the faster car at the end,
- 16:36Speaker 1: But we only really would have got a convincing answer
- 16:38Speaker 1: that had Norris obeyed the team order more quickly and
- 16:40Speaker 1: then potentially have shown himself up as being the faster driver,
- 16:43Speaker 1: and then maybe we would have got a race for
- 16:45Speaker 1: the victory. Who knows, and that would have been a
- 16:46Speaker 1: totally different prospect. And they were race, yes, exactly, but
- 16:50Speaker 1: we didn't get the race that could have been because
- 16:53Speaker 1: he was so intent on creating that gap in that
- 16:56Speaker 1: last stint to make a point when maybe he could
- 16:58Speaker 1: have used that pace after having dropped back immediately after
- 17:01Speaker 1: the fit stops to try and tell him. So it's
- 17:03Speaker 1: kind of a moot point, but it's impossible to argue
- 17:05Speaker 1: that this was a team orders victory when really the
- 17:07Speaker 1: opposite is true. I really thought though Lando Norris's quotes
- 17:10Speaker 1: after the race deserves some mention here. At first, he
- 17:13Speaker 1: insisted that there was no controversy. Was always what are
- 17:15Speaker 1: you talking about it? I was always going to give
- 17:17Speaker 1: the position back. One of people complaining about it was
- 17:19Speaker 1: in the press comers afterwards that he sort of gave
- 17:22Speaker 1: a little bit of an insight into the anguish. I
- 17:24Speaker 1: guess he says he was feeling in the cockpit anyway,
- 17:27Speaker 1: and I quote from him, You've got to be selfish
- 17:29Speaker 1: in this sport. Sometimes you've got to think of yourself.
- 17:32Speaker 1: That's parody number one. But I'm also a team player,
- 17:36Speaker 1: so my mind was going pretty crazy at the time.
- 17:38Speaker 1: It wasn't easy, but I also understood the situation and
- 17:40Speaker 1: I was quite confident always by the last lap I
- 17:44Speaker 1: would have done it. And I find that kind of
- 17:46Speaker 1: interesting because Landa Ross has grown up at McLaren right.
- 17:50Speaker 1: He's a product fundamentally of McLaren. They gave him his
- 17:53Speaker 1: first shot, he developed at that team, and he's now
- 17:55Speaker 1: leading the team. There's always been that loyalty with McLaren,
- 18:00Speaker 1: but there's never been a reason for him to think
- 18:03Speaker 1: about himself as a driver almost in his own right,
- 18:05Speaker 1: because McLaren's never been in that position. Even last year
- 18:08Speaker 1: when they were going for wins, they were going all
- 18:10Speaker 1: out because wins were such a rare thing. This year, though,
- 18:13Speaker 1: while he's obviously desperate to back up his Miami Grand
- 18:15Speaker 1: pre victory because there have been so many missed opportunities,
- 18:18Speaker 1: he is also thinking about the championship. He mentions it
- 18:21Speaker 1: he knows it's a long shot, but it's it is
- 18:23Speaker 1: a long shot. It's not out of the question. It's
- 18:25Speaker 1: worth a try. And suddenly his mind is operating in
- 18:28Speaker 1: a way I guess it's never had to during his
- 18:30Speaker 1: McLaren tenure. And I find that interesting because, to go
- 18:33Speaker 1: back to things that Andrea Seller was talking about after
- 18:35Speaker 1: the race, the principles of McLaren are racing for the
- 18:38Speaker 1: team and you always put the team before yourself. I
- 18:40Speaker 1: mean every team would say that, but the way he
- 18:42Speaker 1: talks about it in these Sunday morning meetings a year
- 18:44Speaker 1: about that, it's really meant to be a big thing
- 18:45Speaker 1: at McLaren. I guess the conditions that got Orlando Norris
- 18:50Speaker 1: there are different now because the conditions that would have
- 18:52Speaker 1: got him too. That mindset originally was that, well, we
- 18:54Speaker 1: hope we could race for a championship in twenty twenty six.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Until then we're building up. Well, no, they're racing for
- 18:59Speaker 1: championships today. How does that process and procedure and structure
- 19:03Speaker 1: stack up is going to be the question of this
- 19:05Speaker 1: second half of the season, because the McLaren from today really,
- 19:08Speaker 1: but let's just for neatness the second half of the year,
- 19:11Speaker 1: he's different to the one we're talking about even a
- 19:13Speaker 1: few months ago.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Yeah, pre Miami McLaren was midfield, upper midfield, but midfield
- 19:21Speaker 2: and the championship. Norris is in with a shot. It's
- 19:24Speaker 2: a long shot, but it is a shot. And Terry
- 19:26Speaker 2: Pratchett wrote that medi in the one shots happened one
- 19:29Speaker 2: hundred percent of the time, so you know he's got
- 19:31Speaker 2: a good chance. It's a good quote, that one. I'm
- 19:35Speaker 2: a big fan of Terry Pratchett. I wonder I'm not
- 19:40Speaker 2: a psychologist by any stretch of the imagination, but I
- 19:42Speaker 2: wonder how much of this is actually a result of
- 19:46Speaker 2: the fact that Norris is part of McLaren that has
- 19:51Speaker 2: been for so long. He's been brought in, groomed to
- 19:54Speaker 2: lead McLaren told how good he is, Told he's the future,
- 19:57Speaker 2: told he's you know, they're guiding light. So of course
- 20:01Speaker 2: that's eventually going to seep in. Then you're going to
- 20:03Speaker 2: start believing your own pr you know, he's going to
- 20:06Speaker 2: start thinking, I'm the leader of this team, I'm in charge,
- 20:10Speaker 2: I'm the best. Whatever it is. With power of positive
- 20:13Speaker 2: thinking and all that sort of stuff, it does eventually
- 20:15Speaker 2: seek In Conversely, you've got Oscar, who is so appreciative
- 20:20Speaker 2: to be there because he knows what it feels like
- 20:24Speaker 2: to not be appreciated, to be held backwards, to be
- 20:28Speaker 2: pushed backwards, to be completely nutterly screwed over by olpam
- 20:34Speaker 2: let's don't throw bodes about it. And he got that
- 20:37Speaker 2: olive lit branch from McLaren and he's appreciated for it.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Every single quote that you read he talks about the
- 20:46Speaker 2: appreciation that he has for Zach, the fact that he
- 20:51Speaker 2: loves being there, that he feels enthused and energized because
- 20:55Speaker 2: they show that faith in him. So it's a different
- 20:58Speaker 2: it's the same thing for Oscar and Lando. I think
- 21:02Speaker 2: they're just looking at it from different sides of the coin.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Lando's never had that never had that roadblock that Oscar
- 21:09Speaker 2: had and as a result him being told he's the future,
- 21:13Speaker 2: he's the best, that him is all, Yeah, that makes
- 21:16Speaker 2: sense where Oscar's like, hey, you guys believe in me
- 21:19Speaker 2: a lot. That means a lot. So it's it's curious
- 21:22Speaker 2: and I just again I'm not a psychologist, but that
- 21:24Speaker 2: that's an interesting thing that I take out of that
- 21:26Speaker 2: as well, just a the mental approach of the of
- 21:30Speaker 2: the two drivers.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think, as I suppose a final notn
- 21:33Speaker 1: on this before we move on to other matters from
- 21:35Speaker 1: this race, what's fascinating about this rivalry because it is
- 21:38Speaker 1: a rivalry now and if it's a quiet one, particularly
- 21:40Speaker 1: given championships are on the line, it can very quiet.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Oscar doesn't say much, Yes, but he's very quiet, very
- 21:46Speaker 1: understated man, but didn't celebrate all that much after this
- 21:48Speaker 1: race when really speaks to he's very level headed, very cool.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Stoic I think is the word.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Yes, stoic, I like it a lot. Is that that
- 21:56Speaker 1: the threat of him to Norris has been pretty far
- 22:00Speaker 1: radical up until now. We've talked a lot about the
- 22:02Speaker 1: single lap pace and Norris having to lift his game,
- 22:04Speaker 1: and Lando himself has talked about how Oscar's made him
- 22:07Speaker 1: lift his game, but it still really remained on paper.
- 22:10Speaker 1: We've seen Oscar get close and then Norris respond winning
- 22:14Speaker 1: his first race, beating Lando Norris in a straight fight
- 22:16Speaker 1: him and he beat him down to the first corner,
- 22:18Speaker 1: had the pace through the race lasting. Besides, it's now
- 22:22Speaker 1: a real threat. There's now a real battle for position
- 22:25Speaker 1: in McLaren. I know Andreas Stella will say there's no
- 22:27Speaker 1: number one and number two driver. That's true, but there
- 22:30Speaker 1: is in every team, if not emotionally, then just purely
- 22:33Speaker 1: by results. Whoever's getting the best results ends up becoming
- 22:35Speaker 1: a lead driver, whether it's temporary or it ends up
- 22:38Speaker 1: being a long term thing. That battle's on now that's
- 22:41Speaker 1: a real thing now that Oscar's off the line as
- 22:43Speaker 1: we knew he always would be. I'm glad it's sooner
- 22:46Speaker 1: rather than later for his sake, but I think sooner
- 22:48Speaker 1: rather than later also sets this up for a long
- 22:50Speaker 1: slog to the end of the year, because, of course,
- 22:53Speaker 1: regardless of whether McLaren wins one or no or two
- 22:56Speaker 1: titles this year, next year, you've got to believe that
- 22:59Speaker 1: they're going to start. But as a favorite, they're going
- 23:01Speaker 1: to start on even footing with Red Bull Racing, maybe
- 23:03Speaker 1: Mercedes and prior who knows, but it'll that we properly
- 23:06Speaker 1: in with a shot and then positioning in terms of
- 23:09Speaker 1: which drivers performing better and what's the form book like
- 23:12Speaker 1: is way more important because one hundred everything will be
- 23:15Speaker 1: on the line, and that's what makes the second half
- 23:17Speaker 1: of the season McLaren so interesting, regardless of whether or
- 23:20Speaker 1: not they actually take the fight to Red Bull Racing.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Having duel number ones works brilliantly in a Formula One team.
- 23:28Speaker 2: It works for Williams in nineteen eighty six with Nigel
- 23:31Speaker 2: Mansellin and Nelson p K. It worked at McLaren with
- 23:36Speaker 2: Alain Prost and end Center. It worked in Mercedes with
- 23:40Speaker 2: Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. There's very very few examples
- 23:46Speaker 2: in Formula One history. We're having two highly rated, highly credentialed,
- 23:52Speaker 2: equal status drivers works very few.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Let's move on now, Matt though, to Red Bull Racing,
- 24:01Speaker 1: a team that does not have to equal number one drivers. Sorry,
- 24:04Speaker 1: Serjo Perez. An interesting weekend for the Raining Constructors Championship
- 24:09Speaker 1: winning team. This was the biggest upgrade of the year
- 24:12Speaker 1: so far for Red Bull racing designed almost specifically for
- 24:16Speaker 1: Hungary or the conditions of Hungary anyway, low speed performance,
- 24:19Speaker 1: opening up the set up window, even cooling, even hot weather,
- 24:22Speaker 1: which happened to be very much the case in Budapest,
- 24:24Speaker 1: and Maxistappen said it worked, but clearly not enough because
- 24:28Speaker 1: Red Bull Racing. I don't want to sound so dramatic
- 24:30Speaker 1: and say it wasn't out the races, because it still
- 24:32Speaker 1: was the second quickest car, but wasn't really in competition
- 24:35Speaker 1: for Pole. The margins in the end were false in
- 24:39Speaker 1: the sense that they looked really close beer because Lando
- 24:41Speaker 1: and Rris didn't get his second lap in, so it
- 24:42Speaker 1: probably would have been bigger, and in the Grand Prix
- 24:45Speaker 1: wasn't really there and some of that inevitably would it
- 24:48Speaker 1: be Max of Staffin's frustration to talk on in the
- 24:50Speaker 1: second But even then the car performance wasn't as we'd
- 24:53Speaker 1: come to expect, where he's capable of winning from anywhere
- 24:56Speaker 1: on the grid and almost anywhere in the race. And
- 24:59Speaker 1: of course most people will remember this Grand Prix from
- 25:01Speaker 1: the Red Bull perspective as being the one or one
- 25:04Speaker 1: of the few I suppose the handful when Max with
- 25:06Speaker 1: Stafford felt like he was truly having a breakdown in
- 25:10Speaker 1: the cockpit. He's angry at everything and at every one
- 25:13Speaker 1: drivers he'd come across on the track, the stewarding, the
- 25:16Speaker 1: performance of the car, his race engineer, the pitball, developers
- 25:20Speaker 1: of the car, the design office. Nothing was spared from
- 25:23Speaker 1: his ire and I think, Matt it gives us a
- 25:25Speaker 1: little bit of an insight. I mean, we already know
- 25:27Speaker 1: what Max is like as a racer and that this
- 25:29Speaker 1: is not wildly out of character for him, but I
- 25:32Speaker 1: think it does give you an insight into pressure is
- 25:36Speaker 1: maybe not exactly the right word, but the fact that
- 25:38Speaker 1: there is more going on behind the scenes, and that
- 25:41Speaker 1: he does genuinely feel like the season is slipping away
- 25:44Speaker 1: from him. Maybe not the title per se, but that
- 25:46Speaker 1: he feels like that era of absolute domination is escaping him.
- 25:52Speaker 2: There's multiple things happening at the moment. Firstly, if we
- 25:57Speaker 2: look at Formula One, over the last decade, we have
- 26:00Speaker 2: historically had a clear favorite team. There's been very few
- 26:05Speaker 2: seasons where you've had a proper competition. We had a
- 26:09Speaker 2: little bit of that in twenty one. Obviously, there's a
- 26:11Speaker 2: little bit of that at the start of twenty two,
- 26:14Speaker 2: but they're almost the anomaly where there is competition in
- 26:17Speaker 2: a proper battle, usually it's a team at the front
- 26:19Speaker 2: that runs clear and is battling it out between themselves.
- 26:24Speaker 2: So we're in something of an anomaly in recent history,
- 26:27Speaker 2: so that by itself is already a little bit unusual.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Red Bull, also within this regulation set, is reaching the
- 26:34Speaker 2: top of a development curve. It's getting more and more
- 26:38Speaker 2: marginal gains from what little wind tunnel time it has,
- 26:41Speaker 2: and it does have reduced wind tunnel time. It's increased
- 26:45Speaker 2: versus what it had because some of the some of
- 26:48Speaker 2: the penalties and things have come off, but also proportionally
- 26:52Speaker 2: McLaren has moved up and other bits and pieces. But
- 26:56Speaker 2: they're making smaller and smaller gains to the point where
- 26:58Speaker 2: it's almost a few should see is now more than
- 27:01Speaker 2: gains that they're finding. Others are still finding gains, so
- 27:04Speaker 2: they're getting closer, which is only serving to remp the
- 27:06Speaker 2: pressure up even further. Then you cast your mind back
- 27:11Speaker 2: six or so months, and Red Bull was in the
- 27:14Speaker 2: headlines for a lot of off track reasons that were
- 27:19Speaker 2: well documented. Don't need to go back over those, but
- 27:22Speaker 2: at the time Christian Horner himself said it was a distraction.
- 27:27Speaker 2: We know it was a distraction. There was stuff that
- 27:30Speaker 2: left through that time for whatever reason, but that's going
- 27:33Speaker 2: to have had an impact. And I had a conversation
- 27:36Speaker 2: over the weekend with a few people and it's like,
- 27:40Speaker 2: maybe this is where it's starting to show, because there's
- 27:42Speaker 2: obviously a lag time, you know, in terms of developing
- 27:45Speaker 2: upgrade packages and formulating how that's going to be dripped
- 27:49Speaker 2: out and working it all out. There's a lead time
- 27:52Speaker 2: in developing, producing whatever. Maybe what we're seeing now is
- 27:58Speaker 2: the hangover of what we saw at the start of
- 28:01Speaker 2: the year, which is an interesting thing as well, particularly
- 28:03Speaker 2: given the developments that we've seen over the last week
- 28:06Speaker 2: or so with Helmet Marco now having a contract with
- 28:08Speaker 2: Red Bull Racing Max for Stappen's attitude throughout the Hunger
- 28:15Speaker 2: and Grand Prix, and it wasn't just the race that
- 28:18Speaker 2: he was surly in that, you know, he was short
- 28:21Speaker 2: throughout the weekend and I just question him racing in
- 28:28Speaker 2: what was a neurburgering twenty four hour virtual race. He's
- 28:34Speaker 2: in the middle of a world championship battle, the biggest
- 28:37Speaker 2: form of motor spot on the planet, and he's willing
- 28:42Speaker 2: to distract himself racing until the wee hours. But if
- 28:48Speaker 2: I'm Christian Horner, I'm having some pretty stern words.
- 28:52Speaker 1: I don't think you are. If you're Christian Horner, I
- 28:53Speaker 1: don't think he's capable of having.
- 28:55Speaker 2: And that's the point that I'm getting to. It's like,
- 28:59Speaker 2: who now runs Red Bull? Where is the power in
- 29:02Speaker 2: that relationship? Is it with the staffman and Marcos such
- 29:07Speaker 2: that they can do that what they want? And is
- 29:10Speaker 2: that the contributing factor to what they're seeing? Now? There's
- 29:14Speaker 2: so many layers to this onion that and there's probably
- 29:17Speaker 2: elements of truth in every layer that it's almost impossible
- 29:20Speaker 2: to wonder. It's going to be fascinating to see how
- 29:26Speaker 2: this exact. We don't have to wait long because the
- 29:30Speaker 2: Belgian grow ond Prix. I don't think Red Bull go
- 29:33Speaker 2: there as favorites. They go there as contenders, but I
- 29:35Speaker 2: think they go there as favorites. I think McLaren are favorites.
- 29:39Speaker 2: When was the last time you said that? When there
- 29:40Speaker 2: was the last time the ball went into a race weekend?
- 29:44Speaker 2: Arguably is the underdogs and on the back foot. So
- 29:46Speaker 2: it's going to be fascinating to see, you know, how
- 29:50Speaker 2: much fight is left in that team and what we
- 29:56Speaker 2: saw in Hungary. What does that mean? Is that Max
- 29:59Speaker 2: for stuff fighting? Is that him panicking? Is that him
- 30:02Speaker 2: just sleep deprived? Is it just him having a bad weekend?
- 30:06Speaker 2: I mean we all have him. Yeah, it's it's gonna
- 30:10Speaker 2: be fascinating. Really, really is.
- 30:13Speaker 1: It's going to be. I mean, I liked I'd always
- 30:16Speaker 1: try to avoid making sweeting statements. But it's all over obviously,
- 30:18Speaker 1: But it's no. It's this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix is
- 30:23Speaker 1: really interesting you talk about the form guide because this
- 30:26Speaker 1: has been absolute Red Bull territory. Under this set of rules.
- 30:29Speaker 1: The team has been embarrassingly fast at this circuit, regardless
- 30:35Speaker 1: of the problems it's had. I mean, Max is one
- 30:36Speaker 1: from all sorts of good places here. If it can't
- 30:39Speaker 1: win this weekend, that really does mean what we've seen,
- 30:43Speaker 1: and it's a Claren winning presumably in this scenario, it'd
- 30:45Speaker 1: be weird if for someone else. I suppose that really
- 30:47Speaker 1: does mean that the form guide has changed. Because I
- 30:50Speaker 1: still expect what I mean, I don't know, it's interesting
- 30:52Speaker 1: to contemplate who might be the favorite this weekend. I
- 30:54Speaker 1: still expect Red Bull to be back in much better form.
- 30:57Speaker 1: But if Max doesn't mean Orlando wins, of Oscar wins
- 31:00Speaker 1: or someone else wins. It'd be interesting. Then I think
- 31:03Speaker 1: we can put a line under Red Bull turning up
- 31:06Speaker 1: to some tracks and dominating this year, because this is
- 31:08Speaker 1: the track that it should dominate at. So there's a
- 31:12Speaker 1: lot actually quite on the line for Red Bull Racing
- 31:13Speaker 1: this weekend, or at least in terms of how we
- 31:15Speaker 1: understand it. Because then if you look at the Constructors
- 31:18Speaker 1: Championship twenty seven points, I think McLaren took out of
- 31:20Speaker 1: Red Bull Racing finally actually second in the standings as well,
- 31:23Speaker 1: so we can stop ignoring Ferrari and just say that
- 31:26Speaker 1: they're third and not mention them again. That's down to
- 31:28Speaker 1: fifty one points I think off the top of my head,
- 31:30Speaker 1: or fifty odd points. I mean, that just tells you
- 31:32Speaker 1: if they do the same thing a couple of races
- 31:34Speaker 1: in a row, they will lead the constructor standings by
- 31:37Speaker 1: the end of the Italian Grand Prix or thereabouts by
- 31:39Speaker 1: Singapore at a minimum. So it really is on here
- 31:42Speaker 1: and Red Bull needs to respond, I think, or show
- 31:44Speaker 1: that it can respond. Rather, responding is usually quite a
- 31:47Speaker 1: long timescale kind of thing in Formula one, so like
- 31:50Speaker 1: you said there's a lot of different elements here. There's
- 31:52Speaker 1: a number element I do want to touch on, of course, though,
- 31:54Speaker 1: and that is so Jo Peri's's performance this weekend. This
- 31:57Speaker 1: has become almost explicitly now a two race shootout or
- 32:02Speaker 1: window for him to save his seat. He says it's not,
- 32:05Speaker 1: but help Michael Christian Order of heavily allude to the
- 32:08Speaker 1: fact that it is. Even Daniel Ricardo alludes to the
- 32:10Speaker 1: fact that it is now so certainly On started the
- 32:13Speaker 1: weekend with what I feel like, in any other context,
- 32:17Speaker 1: would be a backhanded compliment best Friday since China, as
- 32:21Speaker 1: Christian Order described it. Then crashed out of Q one
- 32:24Speaker 1: in a way that even I felt uneasy watching and
- 32:28Speaker 1: felt bad watching it, like you're watching a career die
- 32:30Speaker 1: on the line with it on the vine. Then had
- 32:32Speaker 1: quite a reasonably good Sunday. In fact, Christian Orner went
- 32:35Speaker 1: back to China as the example best Sunday since China.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Scored points, finished seventh, got ahead of George Russel after
- 32:40Speaker 1: falling behind him early in the race. Not enough points
- 32:43Speaker 1: to prevent McLaren taking a big bite out of the
- 32:45Speaker 1: Constructors Championship lead, but a better race, but Matt. I
- 32:49Speaker 1: still feel like, as I think we spoke about last week,
- 32:53Speaker 1: that can't be enough, can it. You know, a good
- 32:55Speaker 1: enough race to seventh after crashing out in Q one
- 32:58Speaker 1: and still a lot of points taken out of Constructors
- 32:59Speaker 1: Champion Chip, I don't know if it cuts it.
- 33:03Speaker 2: And I'm with you, Yes he scored points, but what
- 33:07Speaker 2: he's got six points? Okay, So that means from the
- 33:11Speaker 2: past four races. In fact, from the past six races,
- 33:15Speaker 2: he scored seventeen points, and that's that's a poor return
- 33:20Speaker 2: and investment from any driver. You know, you look at
- 33:26Speaker 2: you look at his peers in in that sort of
- 33:29Speaker 2: top three, top four bracket. Maximustappen had absolute shocker, one
- 33:34Speaker 2: of his worst race weekends, probably his worst race that
- 33:39Speaker 2: I can remember in terms of just you know, pure driving.
- 33:44Speaker 2: You know, I didn't think Monaco was that bad. He
- 33:46Speaker 2: just wasn't wasn't there. But in in Hungary he made
- 33:50Speaker 2: mistakes and he still he was still scored ten points.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Louis Hamilton scored fifteen, Charleclair scored scored twelve, Carlos scored eight.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Sergio was still the lowest scoring of that scoring individual
- 34:07Speaker 2: of that group. The team lost ground, and it's because
- 34:13Speaker 2: he's not pulling his weight. When Max Verstappen doesn't have
- 34:16Speaker 2: a good weekend, that's where you need Sergio to be
- 34:18Speaker 2: having a fantastic weekend. That's what he's there for. He's
- 34:22Speaker 2: not there to push Max and you know, finished second
- 34:26Speaker 2: by a second. He's there for when Max can't finish
- 34:31Speaker 2: first or second or third, to plug that gap. It's
- 34:36Speaker 2: kind of that simple, and he's still not doing it.
- 34:40Speaker 2: So yeah, I think he goes into Belgium staring down
- 34:43Speaker 2: the barrel of well, this could be my last Grand Prix.
- 34:47Speaker 2: It is that serious. And you know, I've had messages
- 34:50Speaker 2: from a few people over the last few weeks talking
- 34:53Speaker 2: about this, some connected people as well, and they basically
- 35:00Speaker 2: said as much. They're not willing to tell me categorically
- 35:03Speaker 2: that my question obviously relates to to Daniel's involvement in
- 35:06Speaker 2: a potential promotion to red Ball. They cannot and will
- 35:10Speaker 2: not categorically rule it out, and wouldn't the team absolutely
- 35:17Speaker 2: want to do that, because all it does is introduce uncertainty.
- 35:22Speaker 2: If if you can absolutely categorically work that out, you
- 35:25Speaker 2: do it. You don't. We don't comment on speculation or whatever.
- 35:28Speaker 2: We'll know more later, is what we're what they're saying,
- 35:33Speaker 2: and that's a hell of a thing to say. That
- 35:35Speaker 2: showed zero faith in Sergio Perez. And I don't care
- 35:41Speaker 2: what Christian Horner said after the Hungary and Grand Prix.
- 35:43Speaker 2: It wasn't good enough. Okay, starting p nowhere on the
- 35:46Speaker 2: group P sixteen shouldn't have been there. Have that same
- 35:49Speaker 2: performance starting P five you're probably on the podium the
- 35:51Speaker 2: way that race panned out, and so it was a
- 35:55Speaker 2: missed opportunity, massive, massive missed opportunity, and for a driver
- 36:00Speaker 2: in a car of that level, it's not good enough.
- 36:05Speaker 2: A change has to be made Otherwise, to your previous
- 36:07Speaker 2: point about McLaren and its challenge for the Constructors Championship,
- 36:11Speaker 2: you know, a couple of races back, we were having
- 36:13Speaker 2: a similar conversation about by the end of the year
- 36:16Speaker 2: McLaren might just get there, might just be a challenger.
- 36:21Speaker 2: We're now talking about Singapore. They could be leading the
- 36:23Speaker 2: Constructors Championship. I mean that's a hell of a turnaround
- 36:25Speaker 2: in the space of two or three races.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it was actually last week we were
- 36:30Speaker 1: talking about the end of that, right.
- 36:34Speaker 2: So you know they're fifty one points down, you get
- 36:39Speaker 2: forty three for finishing first and second hypothetically by the
- 36:44Speaker 2: Italian Grand Prix. Mathematically it's highly unlikely, of course, but
- 36:48Speaker 2: mathematically McLaren could be leading the Constructors Championship and on
- 36:51Speaker 2: current form you'd have to say that it's almost inevitability.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Because Red Bull is fighting with one hand behind his back.
- 36:58Speaker 2: It has to do something about the surger's problem. It's
- 37:00Speaker 2: that simple.
- 37:02Speaker 1: It seems to me now after the Hungarian Grand Prix
- 37:05Speaker 1: that Daniel Ricardo would be at the top of the
- 37:07Speaker 1: list to replace Sergio Perez. And there's been a lot
- 37:09Speaker 1: of talk about Liam Lawson. Looks good every time the
- 37:11Speaker 1: camera crosses to him, look serious and focused. I think
- 37:14Speaker 1: you'll be in an RB before too long, a minimum,
- 37:17Speaker 1: by the start of next year, because that makes much
- 37:19Speaker 1: more sense when you've got Daniel Riccardo's experience, as we've
- 37:21Speaker 1: talked about in previous episodes, but also we talk about
- 37:24Speaker 1: him needing a certain number of good results. This was
- 37:28Speaker 1: a good weekend. The result didn't look that impressive. It
- 37:30Speaker 1: was twelfth, a few places behind Yuki Sinoda, but they
- 37:32Speaker 1: had qualified Yuki race players actually really quite good. Should
- 37:35Speaker 1: have finished well ahead of Sonoda, had RB not put
- 37:38Speaker 1: him on a really quite baffling strategy pitting him with
- 37:42Speaker 1: the soft tire starters when he was on the mediums.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Yuki started on the same mediums and finished the race
- 37:47Speaker 1: in a one stop strategy, finished ninth relatively comfortably. Riccardo
- 37:51Speaker 1: would have done the same. Some stats'm putting together for
- 37:53Speaker 1: a Fox Sports article shows you that he should have
- 37:57Speaker 1: been had he'd run the same strategy as Yuki. Sonoda
- 37:59Speaker 1: got those only one seconds back from the pit stop.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Looking at his improved pace compared to Sonoda in that
- 38:04Speaker 1: second stint, would have finished perhaps as much as thirty
- 38:08Speaker 1: seconds up the road of Sonoda because he had that
- 38:10Speaker 1: much pace in hand in that second stint. He was
- 38:12Speaker 1: in good form this weekend, and you could tell after
- 38:14Speaker 1: the race. It's probably the most worked up in a
- 38:18Speaker 1: while we've seen Daniel really frustrated, really furious. This is
- 38:21Speaker 1: after he'd said at the start of the weekend, you know,
- 38:24Speaker 1: and this was his admission that these could be the
- 38:26Speaker 1: two most important race of his career. I still think
- 38:29Speaker 1: despite the results, the showing was good. I think if
- 38:32Speaker 1: the aim was to prove that he's that upturn inform
- 38:35Speaker 1: we've talked about in the last month is continuing. I
- 38:38Speaker 1: think he still managed that despite what looks like quite
- 38:40Speaker 1: a poor head round the headline result.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Yeah, this is often the case with Daniel really anyone
- 38:47Speaker 2: outside of the headline grabbing teams. You've got to dig
- 38:49Speaker 2: below just the surface level result because fighting in the
- 38:52Speaker 2: midfield is often a very nuanced, nuanced thing. And you're right.
- 38:59Speaker 2: It all came down to why the hell did Daniel
- 39:02Speaker 2: pit on lap five or whatever it was when he
- 39:04Speaker 2: could probably have gone a lot longer, as evidenced by
- 39:07Speaker 2: Yuki Snoda. So I hadn't delved into it quite as
- 39:11Speaker 2: deeply as you had, but it was just surface level.
- 39:13Speaker 2: You could see that right there. It was clear that
- 39:18Speaker 2: was a strategic screw up that the team has now admitted.
- 39:21Speaker 2: As much Daniel's knew from within the as he was
- 39:24Speaker 2: coming in ped entry. He was questioning it, he said
- 39:26Speaker 2: post trace, if he can see it from from the cockpit,
- 39:30Speaker 2: it's a little bit like McLaren and silver Soon, I
- 39:31Speaker 2: guess why couldn't make the pit wallh it ahead of time?
- 39:35Speaker 2: It's really in excuse. It's interesting there's a lot of
- 39:38Speaker 2: strategic errors happening at the moment. But you're right in
- 39:42Speaker 2: that it was a good weekend for Daniel. It it
- 39:46Speaker 2: started well enough. He delivered in qualifying. Yes, he was
- 39:50Speaker 2: ninth and Yuki Soda was only one spile behind, But
- 39:53Speaker 2: the difference was that Daniel didn't crash. Yuki crashed the car.
- 39:59Speaker 2: And if you're trying to demonstrate to a prospective employer,
- 40:04Speaker 2: even if it's just for a promotion, you want to
- 40:07Speaker 2: demonstrate that you can do the job, and you can
- 40:09Speaker 2: do it without any fanfare. You can do it without drumas,
- 40:13Speaker 2: you can do it without extending yourself. Daniel has the
- 40:17Speaker 2: track record, but he needs to revisit that a little bit.
- 40:20Speaker 2: I think he did that in a hungaring and it
- 40:26Speaker 2: sort of follows on this trends really from sort of
- 40:29Speaker 2: spain Ish where he started to deliver. He started to
- 40:34Speaker 2: get that confidence back and the punchiness of his comments
- 40:37Speaker 2: really speaks to the fact that he believes again.
- 40:43Speaker 1: I think that's very interesting. I think that that scenario
- 40:46Speaker 1: was quite the pressure situation over the course of the
- 40:49Speaker 1: weekend was really interesting to watch play out among all
- 40:51Speaker 1: the different drivers. And I think in the next one
- 40:54Speaker 1: we will inevitably in the next couple of weeks know
- 40:56Speaker 1: how this is going to pan out. Rib Racing has
- 40:58Speaker 1: said he will take a decision after the Belgian Grand Prix, Matt,
- 41:01Speaker 1: which is this weekend. Before we wrap this podcast up,
- 41:04Speaker 1: it is time for our ratings for the week. Would
- 41:08Speaker 1: you like to start us off? This is now the
- 41:09Speaker 1: my favorite part of the podcast.
- 41:11Speaker 2: I love it. I feel that we probably need to
- 41:14Speaker 2: explain what we're doing here. It's people coming cold. Basically,
- 41:19Speaker 2: think of it as an alternative World Championship. Everyone's a contender. Michael,
- 41:23Speaker 2: you're in You're in contention for the World Championship. It
- 41:25Speaker 2: doesn't matter who you are, what you are. We just
- 41:28Speaker 2: arbitrarily give or take points away based on how we feel.
- 41:33Speaker 2: It's kind of that's that's the pistic end. That's that's
- 41:36Speaker 2: as intelligent as it gets. Some of it's funny, some
- 41:40Speaker 2: of it's just stupid, and all of it meaningless. So
- 41:45Speaker 2: with that in mind, I'm going to start things off
- 41:49Speaker 2: and my first lot of points goes to Oscar Piastri okay,
- 41:54Speaker 2: and I'm going to give them a healthy five because
- 41:57Speaker 2: it's a fifth Australian to win a World Championship Grand Prix,
- 42:01Speaker 2: and I say World Championship Grand Prix because there's been
- 42:02Speaker 2: plenty of non championship Groands Prix and many that won't
- 42:05Speaker 2: even Formula One that Australians won. But in the World
- 42:08Speaker 2: Championship and it's not Formula One, but in the World Championship,
- 42:12Speaker 2: he's the fifth. I'll get off that high horse one day,
- 42:14Speaker 2: but today it's not that day.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Yeah. I like a good technical call. It's very good.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Funnily enough, my first five points also goes to Oscar Piastre.
- 42:24Speaker 1: The number five was less in detail thought out than
- 42:27Speaker 1: your five was. I just thought it was a satisfying
- 42:30Speaker 1: but I give it to him for perhaps controversial reasons, Matt,
- 42:34Speaker 1: and I give it to him for not doing the
- 42:36Speaker 1: shoey after he won, because it's funny. I get it.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Drinking from a shoe, it's not it's not a usual
- 42:43Speaker 1: drinking vessel. I get it. But we don't all have
- 42:47Speaker 1: to do it whenever anything good or interesting and notable happens.
- 42:52Speaker 1: And I'm to me, yes, I'm at the end of
- 42:57Speaker 1: every podcast, you're cracking.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Out the shoe drink shoes kicking around, just only one
- 43:02Speaker 2: shoe left in them though.
- 43:03Speaker 1: So I was quite pleased to see that he's going
- 43:05Speaker 1: to find his own way to celebrate, even though I
- 43:07Speaker 1: know you did the shoey in Silverston for.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Some reason, but it was my point in Silverston, wasn't it.
- 43:14Speaker 1: I don't follow the shoey trainers, so I'm perfectly happy
- 43:18Speaker 1: with these five points.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Well, it was a good day for Oscar Piastre. He
- 43:23Speaker 2: he won a little race in Hungary and scored ten
- 43:25Speaker 2: big points in our alternative championship, and I know which
- 43:28Speaker 2: one means more to him.
- 43:31Speaker 1: We didn't celebrate that hard after Hungry, so it's possibly
- 43:34Speaker 1: our one.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Yeah, did see all mate give him the cash and
- 43:37Speaker 2: say you're going to win this week? And yep, that
- 43:41Speaker 2: was that was pretty good. All right? My second one
- 43:44Speaker 2: of points. Then what we give we must take us away.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Given that Oscar has been given ten for winning, I'm
- 43:52Speaker 2: going to take eighty one away from from Lando Norris.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I've just.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Taken the number at random. Eighty one. Don't know where
- 43:58Speaker 2: that's come from, but I thought that was that was
- 44:04Speaker 2: just poor form. And you know what, I'm going to
- 44:07Speaker 2: take eighty one away from McLaren as well. Just oh wow,
- 44:10Speaker 2: it's not a slash McClaren, because I think they both
- 44:13Speaker 2: made a Millise.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Okay, that's interesting to see how the statiticians de code
- 44:18Speaker 1: that kind of entry in the championship standings. At least
- 44:20Speaker 1: it's not half points. I'm happy with that. My I'm
- 44:23Speaker 1: taking going back to the negatives taking fifty points off RB,
- 44:28Speaker 1: because that's roughly the disparity between where Daniel Riccardo finished
- 44:32Speaker 1: and where he should have finished fifty seconds up the road.
- 44:35Speaker 1: It would have been ninth place, would have scored two points,
- 44:37Speaker 1: we wouldn't have been talking about how disappointed he was afterwards.
- 44:40Speaker 1: It was just as Riccardo said in his two hundred
- 44:43Speaker 1: and fifty odd races, it's the worst strategy he's ever
- 44:45Speaker 1: had and just poor form all round.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Well, I can tell you it's two hundred and fifty
- 44:50Speaker 2: two race starts, two hundred and fifty three pre hundred
- 44:54Speaker 2: and fifty two starts. So I know that because that's
- 44:56Speaker 2: how many points I've taken from RB this weekend.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Oh it's gonna be did come back from RB?
- 45:03Speaker 2: Yeah, three hundred and two points gone like that for
- 45:07Speaker 2: For RB, they're really going to have to a little
- 45:11Speaker 2: bit like the Bridge Grand Pre organizers. They're going they're
- 45:14Speaker 2: going to have to lift from from monears, but.
- 45:21Speaker 1: It's been a rough week for Abbi. Way fewer points
- 45:25Speaker 1: in our championship than obviously in the actual one and
- 45:26Speaker 1: Formida one. But my final one is Max for Stafford.
- 45:30Speaker 1: He gets minus one point, not for competing in the
- 45:35Speaker 1: twenty four hours of Noboobering or whatever it was. Per se.
- 45:37Speaker 1: I don't mind that he was up till three am.
- 45:39Speaker 1: I sure he slept before and afterwards. He knows what
- 45:41Speaker 1: he's doing. He's done it before. In fact, I think
- 45:43Speaker 1: he did it before winning the Midi Romania Grand Prix.
- 45:46Speaker 1: One point off for appearing not to have a life
- 45:49Speaker 1: like entering so many overnight Well, I have to be overnight.
- 45:52Speaker 1: I guess they're twenty four hour races, SIM races when
- 45:55Speaker 1: your day job is racing a Formula one car. I mean,
- 45:58Speaker 1: someone's got to take him out to show them a
- 46:00Speaker 1: good time, because I just find that a little bit sad.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Isn't it that most Formula one drivers use the SIM
- 46:08Speaker 2: to improve their real racing. Max uses real racing to
- 46:11Speaker 2: improve previously.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yes, I suppose that's probably true.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Actually that's from everything I've seen. I don't think Max
- 46:23Speaker 2: needs too much encouragement to have a good time, but.
- 46:27Speaker 1: No, that's true actually, so maybe maybe later down the
- 46:29Speaker 1: line will give him some points showing that he's having
- 46:31Speaker 1: a good time. But for me, I just thought, just
- 46:34Speaker 1: take the time off, go and do something. Can't do
- 46:36Speaker 1: have a meal, go out, I don't know, it's pets
- 46:38Speaker 1: a great city anyway. There are rankings for this week.
- 46:41Speaker 1: We'll be back with the rankings and other content next week,
- 46:43Speaker 1: of course, because that's all the time we have for

- 46:50Speaker 1: before the August break, and what driver market moves may
- 46:54Speaker 1: or may not be eventuating at Red Bull Racing before then.
- 46:56Speaker 1: So Jo Peri's all lives will be on you. You
