- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn Dutch with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely! I've been practicing those question words from last week. Welke and welk are still tricky, but I'm getting there. Lucas: That's great. Today, let's add two more prepositions to your toolkit: over and door. Luna: Over and door? Those sound like English words too. Are they similar? Lucas: Partly. Over can mean 'about' or 'over,' and door can mean 'through' or 'by.' Let's start with over. Listen: over. Luna: Over. Lucas: Good. For example: Ik praat over het weer. That means 'I talk about the weather.' Luna: So over here means 'about.' Ik praat over het weer. Lucas: Exactly. Or: Het boek gaat over vogels. 'The book is about birds.' Luna: Het boek gaat over vogels. That's a nice sentence. Lucas: Now door. It can mean 'through' or 'by.' For instance: Hij loopt door de deur. 'He walks through the door.' Luna: Door de deur. So door is 'through' here. Hij loopt door de deur. Lucas: Perfect. Another example: Ik fiets door het park. 'I bike through the park.' Luna: Ik fiets door het park. That sounds lovely. Lucas: Let's practice a quick dialogue. Imagine we're talking about a book. I say: Het boek gaat over vogels. What does that mean? Luna: The book is about birds. Lucas: Right. And if I say: Ik praat over het weer, you answer with... Luna: Uh, 'I talk about the weather.' Lucas: Exactly. Now for door. If I say: Hij loopt door de deur, what's that? Luna: He walks through the door. Lucas: And: Ik fiets door het park. Luna: I bike through the park. Lucas: You're nailing it. Now let's put them together in a mini story. I'm going to describe my morning. Luister maar. Luna: Okay, I'm listening. Lucas: Ik praat over het weer. Daarna loop ik door de deur. Ik fiets door het park. En ik lees een boek over vogels. Luna: Whoa, that's a lot. Let me try: I talk about the weather. Then I walk through the door. I bike through the park. And I read a book about birds. Lucas: Perfect translation! Now you try saying it in Dutch. Just the first sentence: Ik praat over het weer. Luna: Ik praat over het weer. Lucas: Second: Daarna loop ik door de deur. Luna: Daarna loop ik door de deur. Lucas: Third: Ik fiets door het park. Luna: Ik fiets door het park. Lucas: Last: En ik lees een boek over vogels. Luna: En ik lees een boek over vogels. Lucas: Excellent! You know, it's amazing how much you can say with just a few words. If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Dutch like this, you might want to support the show. 'I look through the window.' Luna: Ik kijk door het raam. That's useful. Lucas: And with over: We praten over het weekend. 'We talk about the weekend.' Luna: We praten over het weekend. I like that one. Lucas: Let's do a quick quiz. I'll say a Dutch phrase, you tell me the meaning. First: Het gaat over jou. Luna: It's about you. Lucas: Correct! Next: De kat loopt door de tuin. Luna: The cat walks through the garden. Lucas: Perfect. And: Ik denk over de reis. Luna: I think about the trip. Lucas: You're on fire today. Let's wrap up by repeating today's key phrases. Repeat after me: Ik praat over het weer. Luna: Ik praat over het weer. Lucas: Hij loopt door de deur. Luna: Hij loopt door de deur. Lucas: Het boek gaat over vogels. Luna: Het boek gaat over vogels. Lucas: Ik fiets door het park. Luna: Ik fiets door het park. Lucas: Great job, Luna. Keep practicing these, and next time we'll build on them. Practice these till we chat again! Luna: Thanks, Lucas. See you next time!
