- 0:10Speaker 3: until you here the New England Patriots swage.
- 0:13Speaker 4: The countdown is on.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Welcome to the Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light.
- 0:20Speaker 4: Welcome everybody. This is Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light,
- 0:23Speaker 4: Easy to Drink, Easy to enjoy, Budlight, the official beer
- 0:26Speaker 4: sponsor of the New England Patriots, and it's getting exciting.
- 0:28Speaker 4: A little over three weeks left before the NFL Draft
- 0:31Speaker 4: this year, guys, we've been talking about all this stuff.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Today we're gonna be focusing on the front seven. Evan's
- 0:35Speaker 4: got a film breakdown, we got another mock draft from
- 0:37Speaker 4: Matisse and Chris, and here we're gonna be talking about
- 0:40Speaker 4: the latest news. So over the last week, guys, we've
- 0:41Speaker 4: had some breaking news, some different things happening. The Patriots
- 0:44Speaker 4: signed Stefon Diggs, they released Jawan Bentley, and a little
- 0:48Speaker 4: bit of news coming out of the owner's meetings where
- 0:49Speaker 4: I was down in Palm Beach, Florida. But I want
- 0:52Speaker 4: to start with Stefan Diggs, huge news. We talk all
- 0:55Speaker 4: the time about wide receiver being in need, Paul, It's
- 0:58Speaker 4: just it's been hanging over this team for a while now.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Stefan Diggs definitely feels the need, it feels like, but
- 1:04Speaker 4: he's coming off an injury. He's a little bit older,
- 1:06Speaker 4: not quite sure he's that guy, but he certainly makes
- 1:09Speaker 4: an impact. How do you think it impacts the Patriots
- 1:11Speaker 4: view of the draft and the wide receivers.
- 1:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know specifically about the draft, but it
- 1:16Speaker 5: is certainly a move that they needed to make, and
- 1:18Speaker 5: we all saw the gaping hole at the position. And
- 1:21Speaker 5: you know, Evan and I were here last week when
- 1:24Speaker 5: when Steph came in, and I think we were all
- 1:27Speaker 5: sort of impressed, just you know, the ease with which
- 1:30Speaker 5: he goes about his business. Great personality, oozes personality from
- 1:34Speaker 5: that podium when he spoke to us at his press conference.
- 1:37Speaker 5: I think we had, you know, some good stuff with
- 1:40Speaker 5: him behind the scenes and sort of getting acclimated to
- 1:42Speaker 5: New England. But I think specifically on the field, Mike,
- 1:46Speaker 5: they don't have, in my opinion, a one or a
- 1:49Speaker 5: two without Stefan Diggs. So you bring him in, you
- 1:53Speaker 5: sort of roll the dice a little bit about the health,
- 1:55Speaker 5: and that's certainly a big concern, But I think the
- 1:57Speaker 5: numbers are right. I don't think that they're necessarily boxed
- 2:02Speaker 5: into a you know, a cage here if it doesn't
- 2:05Speaker 5: work out. I think it makes a lot of sense,
- 2:07Speaker 5: and I think the wide receiver room is better today
- 2:10Speaker 5: than it was without them.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Evan Paul talks about the wide receiver room. Yeah, and
- 2:14Speaker 4: how Stefan Diggs kind of fits in. If you were
- 2:16Speaker 4: to look at the draft, though, how do you see
- 2:18Speaker 4: it's shaping up with the kind of player that maybe
- 2:21Speaker 4: they might take. I don't think any of us are
- 2:22Speaker 4: thinking Travis Hunter. Maybe he could of course fit in well,
- 2:26Speaker 4: But let's say we get down in the second third,
- 2:28Speaker 4: mid round, what kind of guy would you be looking
- 2:30Speaker 4: for to complement this group and potentially raise their level.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's a great question. Something that I've
- 2:35Speaker 3: kind of racked my brain about a little bit is
- 2:37Speaker 3: is finding that complimentary outside receiver to Diggs. I think
- 2:41Speaker 3: Diggs is going to play more of that movable chess
- 2:44Speaker 3: piece type of role chain mover, you know, inside and
- 2:48Speaker 3: outside in terms of slot and outside usage. So you know,
- 2:51Speaker 3: who's the guy that can really play that exposition and
- 2:54Speaker 3: get down the field maybe a little bit. And this
- 2:57Speaker 3: draft it's hard, like there aren't a ton of guys
- 2:59Speaker 3: that perfectly fit that mold. You know, Travis Hunter is
- 3:03Speaker 3: his own thing. You know, he's obviously illegally you draft
- 3:05Speaker 3: him if you can. But Ted McMillan, I wouldn't say
- 3:08Speaker 3: is necessarily that vertical guy, you know, I think he's
- 3:12Speaker 3: still more of a first and second level receiver. Jaden
- 3:16Speaker 3: Higgins Paul not really that guy that's going to be
- 3:18Speaker 3: down the field, third, third level. So it is a
- 3:23Speaker 3: little bit when you try to find size and speed
- 3:28Speaker 3: in the same player in this draft class, there's not
- 3:31Speaker 3: a ton of that. You know, there's not a ton
- 3:33Speaker 3: of the you know, I know they don't grow on trees,
- 3:35Speaker 3: but there's not a DK metcalf right, which like feels
- 3:38Speaker 3: like the perfect compliment to somebody like Steph you know,
- 3:41Speaker 3: Nico Collins in Houston. Like I don't see that guy
- 3:44Speaker 3: in this draft, which is a little bit uh interesting
- 3:47Speaker 3: because I wonder where they got instead, you know, do
- 3:50Speaker 3: they go with another separator, you know, a Jalen Nowel,
- 3:54Speaker 3: Kyle Williams, Luther Burden, like a guy that is going
- 3:57Speaker 3: to play a lot in the slot, but speak is
- 4:00Speaker 3: if it's your separator and is a fast guy, maybe.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Yeah, So I'm gonna turn the page tis for you.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Rumor coming out of the owner's meetings there that the
- 4:08Speaker 4: Patriots are getting offers for Joe Milton Now, I think
- 4:11Speaker 4: we look at things a little bit differently around here.
- 4:12Speaker 4: I don't know what the scuttle butt is out there,
- 4:14Speaker 4: but we all watched plenty of practices last summer with
- 4:17Speaker 4: Joe Milton, and we saw how we finished the season
- 4:19Speaker 4: as well. An impressive performance to be sure, But at
- 4:22Speaker 4: the same time, I'm not sure where all this talk
- 4:24Speaker 4: tise is coming from that you know, your first second round, Like,
- 4:28Speaker 4: I know how valuable quarterbacks are in the league right now,
- 4:31Speaker 4: But does it make sense for the Patriots to move
- 4:33Speaker 4: on from Joe Milton at this point if they're just
- 4:35Speaker 4: gonna let and I think realistically we're talking about a
- 4:37Speaker 4: Day three pick. That's what I think we all view
- 4:40Speaker 4: his realistic trade value right now. Does it make sense
- 4:43Speaker 4: to trade him for a Day three pick at this
- 4:45Speaker 4: point or does it make more sense for this team
- 4:46Speaker 4: with Drake May of course at the top of the
- 4:48Speaker 4: depth chart to keep him around and see maybe how
- 4:50Speaker 4: it looks next year.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it has to be a Day two pick. Otherwise,
- 4:55Speaker 2: if he's that good, well you know what I mean,
- 4:57Speaker 2: why would you move him if he's If he's that good.
- 5:00Speaker 2: That being said, if say Drake Mega's hurt, I can't
- 5:02Speaker 2: watch Josh Dops for a full year, I'm sorry, I'd
- 5:04Speaker 2: rather watch Joe Milton see what he has. But I mean,
- 5:07Speaker 2: if you can maybe get a high like a fourth rounder, maybe,
- 5:10Speaker 2: but I think you might be able to hold on
- 5:12Speaker 2: him for another year and maybe get some more for him.
- 5:14Speaker 5: I agree with Tease. I think this value in a
- 5:16Speaker 5: quality backup quarterback. So if you are that high on
- 5:20Speaker 5: Joe Milton, you know, second year of a rookie deal,
- 5:23Speaker 5: I would hold on to him unless someone wants to
- 5:25Speaker 5: get silly and give you way more than your thinking
- 5:28Speaker 5: right now. But to me, it wouldn't even begin to
- 5:32Speaker 5: be a thought until you're talking about at least a
- 5:34Speaker 5: day two pick. And I'm with you, Mike, I'm not
- 5:37Speaker 5: sure that he's worth that yet. But you know, this
- 5:40Speaker 5: is a testament to the teams there, and there's but
- 5:43Speaker 5: a half dozen of them that are really desperately looking
- 5:46Speaker 5: for a quarterback, So I'm not going to rule it out.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Evan.
- 5:49Speaker 4: You've said it before, you said, Joe Milton is just
- 5:52Speaker 4: an intriguing player, and you can see why he went
- 5:54Speaker 4: to a couple of different colleges. He looks like Cam
- 5:57Speaker 4: Newton out there. He's doing backflips, he's throwing the ball,
- 6:00Speaker 4: you know, through the lighthouse here. So let stadium, you know,
- 6:02Speaker 4: what do you kind of expect to see out of
- 6:04Speaker 4: Joe Milton the year? I mean, I know he's an
- 6:05Speaker 4: older player too, so it's maybe understandable that he might
- 6:09Speaker 4: want to try to get a chance somewhere where he's
- 6:10Speaker 4: not behind a drake Man. Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I think that would be the only reason why I
- 6:14Speaker 3: would move Joe Milton sooner than I want to is
- 6:17Speaker 3: if he has the belief that he should be competing
- 6:20Speaker 3: for a starting job and that causes some sort of friction.
- 6:23Speaker 3: I'm not saying that exists. I'm just saying hypothetically, if
- 6:26Speaker 3: that were to happen, I don't think any of us
- 6:29Speaker 3: want a mac Jones and Bailey's Appy situation.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Again, So that would be the only reason why I
- 6:34Speaker 3: would even entertain moving him, unless it was for some
- 6:37Speaker 3: you know, like Tison and Paul said something crazy, right,
- 6:40Speaker 3: you know, in terms of the offer, In terms of
- 6:42Speaker 3: Joe Milton the talent, I think what you just wonder
- 6:45Speaker 3: is if you put him into this draft against Jalen Milroe,
- 6:49Speaker 3: Will Howard, Riley Leonard, like all these other you know,
- 6:53Speaker 3: Tyler Show, Schuck, you know, Paul's guy. Like, if you
- 6:55Speaker 3: put him into all that group, Like, where does Joe
- 6:59Speaker 3: Milton fit? Because last year's draft was so quarterback heavy
- 7:03Speaker 3: that he got knocked all the way down to the
- 7:04Speaker 3: sixth round. But does he go in the third round
- 7:07Speaker 3: in this draft? Does he go in the fourth round
- 7:09Speaker 3: in this draft? But like you said, a lot of
- 7:11Speaker 3: programs Tennessee, Michigan, all these teams thought that Joe Milton
- 7:16Speaker 3: was a guy, like he was gonna be the next
- 7:18Speaker 3: big thing, and it just has never completely The consistency
- 7:22Speaker 3: has never been there for him. But I would like
- 7:24Speaker 3: the Patriots to hold on to him more as insurance
- 7:27Speaker 3: in case, you know, you have another high upside player
- 7:30Speaker 3: at that position. I think if it was one game,
- 7:32Speaker 3: you might go with Josh Dobbs, But if it was
- 7:34Speaker 3: half a season, you know, then maybe you would be
- 7:37Speaker 3: going with Joe Milton.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Do you think, what's the instant yes, like is a
- 7:41Speaker 2: fourth and instant yes like we're doing it.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Or I think a top one hundred pick. I would
- 7:45Speaker 3: do it for, you know, anything on day two, I
- 7:49Speaker 3: would feel like is probably catching in when his value
- 7:53Speaker 3: is the highest. But I think I would say no
- 7:57Speaker 3: to anything less than that.
- 7:58Speaker 4: My last piece of our latest news a little bit
- 8:00Speaker 4: of a surprising release with Juwan Bentley, captain here, leader
- 8:04Speaker 4: of the defense tone setter. I think the Patriots really
- 8:06Speaker 4: missed him last year. I was a little bit surprised,
- 8:08Speaker 4: but probably not quite totally shocked when you saw the
- 8:12Speaker 4: kind of players that they're signing, you know, with Robert Splane,
- 8:15Speaker 4: seems like there's a real uh, I don't know what
- 8:19Speaker 4: the word. I'm struggling with the word to try to
- 8:21Speaker 4: find the premium put on speed. It feels like that's
- 8:23Speaker 4: what this defense philosophy is headed too. Yeah, a philosophy shift.
- 8:26Speaker 4: And you know, nothing against Jewan Bentley. I do think
- 8:28Speaker 4: the team released him with an injury designation, so probably
- 8:31Speaker 4: part of his recovery as well. Uh, but how do
- 8:34Speaker 4: you see that impacting their draft needs? Paul, do you
- 8:37Speaker 4: think they're gonna continue? Maybe did make a couple signings
- 8:39Speaker 4: there at the linebacker position, so they do have some
- 8:42Speaker 4: players there, but it's still a big loss. Captain leader,
- 8:45Speaker 4: big part.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Of your deal, you know, on the field, maybe you
- 8:47Speaker 5: are looking for another one of those types of linebackers.
- 8:50Speaker 5: And you know, we've talked a lot about the potential
- 8:53Speaker 5: for a philosophy shift, like Kevin said, just you know,
- 8:55Speaker 5: the smaller, quicker, more athletic guys that might go sideline
- 8:59Speaker 5: to sideline. But you know, Evan and I talked on
- 9:02Speaker 5: some earlier this week on PU just about maybe more
- 9:06Speaker 5: of a culture kind of thing and Vrabel searching for
- 9:09Speaker 5: his versions of Juwan Bentley. And I don't think anybody
- 9:13Speaker 5: would have anything negative to say about Juwan Bentley, the character,
- 9:16Speaker 5: the captain just elite, elite leadership, right, But I think
- 9:21Speaker 5: Mike Rabel might be looking to say, okay, those guys,
- 9:24Speaker 5: And I think he used the comment out with you guys.
- 9:27Speaker 5: You know, Captain's not like a four year term or anything.
- 9:30Speaker 5: It's every year, it changes. It's not like a contract
- 9:34Speaker 5: that you signed. So I think Mike is looking for
- 9:36Speaker 5: his guys to sort of fill those roles. And I
- 9:38Speaker 5: don't think it's a coincidence that it's Bentley, it's Wide,
- 9:42Speaker 5: it's Jonathan Jones, it's David Andrews. A bunch of guys
- 9:45Speaker 5: that have been around here for a while and have
- 9:47Speaker 5: been leaders and they're no longer here.
- 9:49Speaker 2: What do you feel about that this class for off
- 9:50Speaker 2: the ball linebackers.
- 9:51Speaker 3: I think it's a great class. But I think what's
- 9:53Speaker 3: interesting about it just coming through some of these linebackers
- 9:56Speaker 3: is do they not want a thumber at all? They
- 10:00Speaker 3: don't want anybody that is going to, you know, take
- 10:02Speaker 3: up space and take on blocks, and even if it's
- 10:06Speaker 3: just to play a goal line and short yardage and
- 10:09Speaker 3: you know, run downs and things like that. Just for
- 10:12Speaker 3: so many years we've had that type of player here
- 10:15Speaker 3: and maybe it's not a full time role in Mike
- 10:18Speaker 3: Rabels defense, but I just find it hard to believe
- 10:20Speaker 3: that there's no spot on the team for somebody that
- 10:23Speaker 3: can take on a guard right like that. It has
- 10:25Speaker 3: to be someone's got to be able to do that.
- 10:28Speaker 3: And when I look at this linebacker class, I think
- 10:30Speaker 3: a lot of the names that people gravitate towards, you know,
- 10:32Speaker 3: outside of the Jalen Walkers and the Ghat Campbell's at
- 10:35Speaker 3: the top of the draft. Are you know the Chris
- 10:37Speaker 3: Paul Juniors, the Barrett Carter's Schweschinger from UCLA, Demetrius Knight.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Demetrius Knight, all these guys played two twenty five, two thirty,
- 10:48Speaker 3: you know, great speed, great coverage ability in some cases,
- 10:51Speaker 3: I think Knight's probably the best downhill player out of
- 10:53Speaker 3: the group. But Chris Paul Junior is an exceptional coverage player,
- 10:58Speaker 3: Jeffrey Bossa from Oregon except coverage player. But how many
- 11:01Speaker 3: of that type of player are you going to have
- 11:03Speaker 3: on one roster? So that's what I wonder. I kind
- 11:06Speaker 3: of like scratching my head a little bit about it,
- 11:08Speaker 3: Like you gotta have somebody right that on, you know,
- 11:11Speaker 3: a fourth and goal for the game like that, it
- 11:13Speaker 3: can come downhill and take somebody out and you know,
- 11:16Speaker 3: and get the ball on the ground. So I do
- 11:18Speaker 3: wonder where they find that in a draft like this.
- 11:21Speaker 4: T secual ask you about leadership, because we've seen now
- 11:23Speaker 4: Juwan Bentley departed, We've seen Jonathan Jones depart, Tetrick Wise,
- 11:27Speaker 4: David Andrews, number of captains. Feels like they're hitting the
- 11:30Speaker 4: reset button a little bit on the leadership with this team.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it certainly is the end of an era.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I mean, I think it's just Cardona left at this point.
- 11:37Speaker 2: We're just crazy to think about. But somebody has to
- 11:40Speaker 2: step up. I think Milton Williams would be a good option.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Spallane like some of the new guys, they're labels, guys,
- 11:45Speaker 2: proved us why he brought you in and be a
- 11:47Speaker 2: new voice on the defense. So sucks. See Bentley go,
- 11:50Speaker 2: I don't think. I think it was a shifting culture,
- 11:52Speaker 2: but not personality wise like Paul said. But somebody's gonna
- 11:55Speaker 2: step up there.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Well, especially in the front seven. And we've got this
- 11:58Speaker 4: is the Front seven episodes, So check out Evan breaking
- 12:01Speaker 4: down some of his favorite prospects the defensive front seven
- 12:04Speaker 4: in this year's draft.
- 12:06Speaker 3: What's up, everybody, It's Evan Lazarre. Welcome back into the
- 12:08Speaker 3: Patriots Draft Countdown film room. Today. We're going to talk
- 12:12Speaker 3: about the cornerbacks, not necessarily a major position to need
- 12:15Speaker 3: for the Patriots after free agency, but you all know
- 12:18Speaker 3: why we're talking about the cornerbacks. It's this guy right here, right,
- 12:21Speaker 3: Travis Hunter, the Heisman Trophy winner. We're going to get
- 12:24Speaker 3: to him in a second, but I do want to
- 12:25Speaker 3: talk about some of the other guys in this class
- 12:28Speaker 3: that I really like. Will Johnson's the other blue chip prospect,
- 12:31Speaker 3: if you will, out of Michigan. Really good National Championship season,
- 12:35Speaker 3: some injuries last year. Jiehati Bearn two from Texas, one
- 12:38Speaker 3: of my favorite players in this class. But let's talk
- 12:41Speaker 3: about that number one guy right there, Travis Hunter. We
- 12:43Speaker 3: know he plays both ways. You can see him down
- 12:45Speaker 3: here at the bottom of the screen against the Toorah
- 12:48Speaker 3: McMillan from Arizona, and he's just going to run the
- 12:51Speaker 3: route for Teed McMillan here in press coverage, and you
- 12:54Speaker 3: see how smooth he is off the line of scrimmage,
- 12:56Speaker 3: his change of direction, his ability and those ball skills
- 12:59Speaker 3: to get his and in there. That is how he
- 13:01Speaker 3: can play Manton Man at a high level. Up here
- 13:03Speaker 3: at the top of the screen, though, we're gonna play
- 13:05Speaker 3: a bail technique, so he's just gonna drop off the
- 13:08Speaker 3: line here into a cover three or a quarters zone
- 13:12Speaker 3: and watch the ball skills, watch the explosiveness in the
- 13:15Speaker 3: jump to knock that pass away on the vertical route.
- 13:18Speaker 3: And then the last one here is the highlight of
- 13:20Speaker 3: his season. I would say probably one of the best
- 13:22Speaker 3: interceptions you'll ever see in college football. So he's going
- 13:25Speaker 3: to play the flat in cover two. Now, the safety
- 13:28Speaker 3: is deep safety deep right here, and as we roll
- 13:31Speaker 3: this play, he's just going to midpoint the deep receiver
- 13:34Speaker 3: and the underneath receiver. If we can pause it right here,
- 13:37Speaker 3: you can see him just kind of eyeing the quarterback
- 13:40Speaker 3: right now in the backfield right where is he going
- 13:42Speaker 3: to throw this football and watch this break on the ball.
- 13:45Speaker 3: I mean, that's just silly. That's just ridiculous. Explosiveness, clicking
- 13:48Speaker 3: clothes interception there by Travis Hunter. That's why everybody is
- 13:53Speaker 3: just going crazy about him as a cornerback prospect. Ball skills,
- 13:57Speaker 3: ballhowking traits, explosiveness, manton man, coverage, rigibility, great feel for
- 14:02Speaker 3: zone coverage. He's just got it all at that position.
- 14:05Speaker 3: A couple of other guys here to just talk about,
- 14:08Speaker 3: maybe closer to Day two, I think mid first round
- 14:10Speaker 3: for Jahati barn who is just an absolute dog. I mean,
- 14:13Speaker 3: this guy plays the nickel. Reminds me a lot of
- 14:16Speaker 3: Brian Branch in Detroit. Just scrappy, willing to put his
- 14:19Speaker 3: face in there and get his nose dirty in the
- 14:21Speaker 3: run game. Really good cover corner as well if you
- 14:24Speaker 3: want to play him in the side and as a
- 14:26Speaker 3: Ray Thomas from Florida State right here at the bottom
- 14:28Speaker 3: of the screen. The Patriots are going to target a
- 14:30Speaker 3: middle round cornerback. I think Thomas is going to be
- 14:33Speaker 3: on their board. Long, strappy man, coverage corner that can
- 14:37Speaker 3: do everything the Patriots are going to ask their cornerbacks
- 14:40Speaker 3: to do. So those are the cornerbacks. Obviously, Travis Hunter
- 14:43Speaker 3: is the big one there at the top, but a
- 14:45Speaker 3: couple of other names to watch for in the top
- 14:47Speaker 3: ten as well, and Will Johnson and Jahati Barry. That's
- 14:50Speaker 3: your cornerback breakdown on this episode of Patriots Draft Countdown.
- 14:54Speaker 3: I'm Evan Lazar.
- 14:56Speaker 2: What's up, guys. We're back for a mock draft tracker
- 14:59Speaker 2: segment on the Patriot Draft Countdown podcasts resent by Bud
- 15:01Speaker 2: Light when he's bounding here at Chris Cassidy, guys, so
- 15:05Speaker 2: Field Yates ESPN. Let's get into it quick. Has the
- 15:08Speaker 2: Patriots taking Travis Hunter first, and he's a trade with
- 15:12Speaker 2: the Buffalo Bills where he sends the Patriots send thirty
- 15:14Speaker 2: eight and seventy seven for thirty and one oh nine,
- 15:18Speaker 2: which is a fourth round pick and the Patriots pick
- 15:21Speaker 2: up offensive tackle. Josh Connolly from Oregon thoughts on that.
- 15:25Speaker 1: You know, I mean the idea Travis Hunter great, yeah,
- 15:29Speaker 1: love it right. Josh Connery also has potential to be
- 15:33Speaker 1: a true starter in this NFL. Yep, he was great
- 15:36Speaker 1: over at Organ, you know, just true tackle. He's big body,
- 15:41Speaker 1: just kind of in the names to arm and Membo.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Also in the names of Will Campbell. Obviously, those are
- 15:46Speaker 1: the two top tier draft picks in that first round
- 15:50Speaker 1: where Connorley does fall into that kind of Josh Simmons also,
- 15:55Speaker 1: you know, like that sort of area of the draft,
- 15:57Speaker 1: so you know, it's it's really appealing. I do think
- 16:01Speaker 1: there's a trade in scenario, if you want my honest opinion.
- 16:07Speaker 1: At this rate, I would say there's probably more of
- 16:09Speaker 1: a trade in scenario for the Patriots if they.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Have to go tackle to go back into the first right, Okay.
- 16:15Speaker 1: There's more of a trade in scenario if they have
- 16:17Speaker 1: to go tackle with that fourth overall pick. If they
- 16:21Speaker 1: do that, I think there's more of a trade scenario
- 16:23Speaker 1: to come back in. If they don't, if they get
- 16:25Speaker 1: the Travis Hunter, I don't know if there's that much
- 16:28Speaker 1: of a possibility for them to trade back in. Maybe
- 16:31Speaker 1: there is, but you might be able to stick it
- 16:33Speaker 1: out until the second round, you know, to kind of
- 16:35Speaker 1: see things through with Arianta Ersieri over there as well.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Okay, so Chris, before we get into some more of
- 16:40Speaker 2: the offensive lineman, obviously we discuss Travis Hunter, which field
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yates has, but then there's Abdol Carter. But it kind
- 16:46Speaker 2: of seems what you know, me, I love Abdul Carter.
- 16:49Speaker 2: That's my option one A on our one B for me.
- 16:53Speaker 2: It kind of seems like the Browns might be passed
- 16:56Speaker 2: on the Corvette Giants too. So it like last time
- 16:59Speaker 2: we talked, it kind of seemed like Travis Hunter and
- 17:01Speaker 2: Abdol Carter on the board, but now it's kind of
- 17:03Speaker 2: turned into that they might not be there.
- 17:04Speaker 1: No, no, and partially because the Giants just signed Russell
- 17:08Speaker 1: Wilson one year. James, yeah, Jamis as well. That quarterback
- 17:12Speaker 1: rooms full of the Browns. They're looking to talk to
- 17:15Speaker 1: the kirk Cousins a little bit. You know, Kirk and
- 17:17Speaker 1: needs a home and he's a good quarterback. Browns had
- 17:19Speaker 1: that luxury you've taken if they want to, So if
- 17:23Speaker 1: that kind of happens, that leaves the door open for
- 17:25Speaker 1: both of them to take Travis Hunter and Abdil Carter.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So a lot of things could kind of transpire in
- 17:30Speaker 1: those top three picks.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Okay, Chris, so before we get into the rest of
- 17:34Speaker 2: offensive lineman, our friend Mike Dessau is getting a little
- 17:37Speaker 2: slandered for the gente pick and his knock. But that
- 17:40Speaker 2: being said, if Hunter and Carter aren't there, do you
- 17:44Speaker 2: do you go o line or maybe gent d like,
- 17:46Speaker 2: I don't know what are you thinking?
- 17:47Speaker 1: You kind of have this back and forth battle with it. Yeah,
- 17:49Speaker 1: you know what I mean, because obviously the old lineman
- 17:53Speaker 1: is very appealing. That is what you need most. I
- 17:55Speaker 1: think that's what the fan base wants the most. If
- 17:57Speaker 1: those two aren't available, you got to get the t
- 17:59Speaker 1: get a guy to really strengthen your offensive line. That
- 18:03Speaker 1: being said, this mindset of the first four picks of
- 18:06Speaker 1: this draft has been find the guy best available, and
- 18:09Speaker 1: Agin GenZ has to be up there as one of
- 18:11Speaker 1: the best available players on this draft. So you know,
- 18:14Speaker 1: you gotta walk that tightrope a little bit. You know,
- 18:17Speaker 1: you gotta take risks at the same time, if you
- 18:18Speaker 1: want to trade back, maybe there's a chance there and
- 18:20Speaker 1: he's available, so I just don't I don't see him
- 18:23Speaker 1: going further than ten.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Yeah, no, Chris, I agree. So then let's get into
- 18:27Speaker 2: some other mocks. We had Chris Deprasso and Lance's Airline
- 18:30Speaker 2: taking Will Campbell, but then we had Eric at at
- 18:33Speaker 2: home from NFL Network or NFL dot Com was arm
- 18:35Speaker 2: on Membo. Yeah, so between those two, I think I'm
- 18:38Speaker 2: taking Campbell. I don't really buy into the arm length stuff.
- 18:42Speaker 2: You know, if you could play, you can play Membo.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Guy's a house and he's a right tackle, but you
- 18:48Speaker 2: can move him over. I think if it's between the two,
- 18:50Speaker 2: you take Campbell. But it seems like Membo is picking
- 18:52Speaker 2: up some tracks.
- 18:53Speaker 1: I think Campbell is definitely that guy to take. I mean,
- 18:55Speaker 1: he also just tested thirty three inches, Now what.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Are the tests?
- 19:00Speaker 1: So so you know, there's kind of that question is
- 19:04Speaker 1: no longer a question because it was pro day. But
- 19:08Speaker 1: I think Campbell is just your pure offics of line
- 19:11Speaker 1: and regardless of size, regardless of how you rare, it
- 19:14Speaker 1: doesn't matter. He can block and that's all you really
- 19:17Speaker 1: need to do. And he has been like we said beginning,
- 19:20Speaker 1: I think it was an episode before he was consentsus
- 19:23Speaker 1: one one at the start of the drum, like the
- 19:25Speaker 1: draft conversations. Obviously, when Abdulan Travis took over, that's when
- 19:29Speaker 1: they kind of became one and two best players. But
- 19:32Speaker 1: Campbell's still a dominant player, no doubt about it.
- 19:35Speaker 2: So all right, and so Campbell over, Membo. I know
- 19:37Speaker 2: you had some other players who wanted to mention for line.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I just want to keep an eye
- 19:41Speaker 1: on Calvin Banks. Of course, out of Texas kind of
- 19:44Speaker 1: fell a little bit because it was excuse me, the
- 19:48Speaker 1: combine kind of fell down a little bit. Also, Josh
- 19:51Speaker 1: Simmons suffered in the injury.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Thanks falling down. We're talking about trading get one there.
- 19:58Speaker 1: He could be right, So you know, I think I
- 20:01Speaker 1: think those are important to talk about. But there's also
- 20:04Speaker 1: been a little bit of scuttle butt. Good word there
- 20:06Speaker 1: you go, but a little bit scull But Patriots taking
- 20:09Speaker 1: a tight end. I mean they have Hunter Henry getting older,
- 20:11Speaker 1: Austin Hooper getting older, Tyler Warren if there's a trade
- 20:15Speaker 1: down scenario possibility. You know, he was awesome at Penn State,
- 20:19Speaker 1: kind of a kind of a dual threat tight end.
- 20:22Speaker 1: He could run the football, He's great, great pass catcher,
- 20:26Speaker 1: solid blocker, probably needs to work on a little bit more,
- 20:28Speaker 1: but overall just the best tight end this draft class.
- 20:32Speaker 1: So who knows, you know, anything could really happen in.
- 20:35Speaker 2: This So Chris, we like that, you know, the sexy
- 20:40Speaker 2: picks are up front, but you know, the work gets
- 20:41Speaker 2: done with the front seven and the edge. And that's
- 20:43Speaker 2: what you're going to with our next section where we
- 20:45Speaker 2: have a discussion on the front seven and the edge position.
- 20:48Speaker 2: So guys, let's get to that.
- 20:50Speaker 4: It's a big day here today as we're breaking down
- 20:52Speaker 4: the front seven. Y'all know me, I love me some
- 20:54Speaker 4: defensive football and this is the key position for me.
- 20:57Speaker 4: Patriots were really active during free agency, guys. I just
- 21:00Speaker 4: want to run down real quick. Some of the moves
- 21:02Speaker 4: that they made really kind of remade their defensive front seven.
- 21:05Speaker 4: I'd say Harold Landry, Clayn, Chase on on the on
- 21:08Speaker 4: the edges, Kairis Tonga Williams the big one.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Note Williams of course in the middle.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Signing Robert Splane, Jack Gibbons at the linebacker level. So
- 21:17Speaker 4: a number of signings, some uncertainty with Christian Barmore, and
- 21:20Speaker 4: I think we got to start with the edge position,
- 21:22Speaker 4: not only because Abdul Carter is up there and as
- 21:25Speaker 4: you know, probably one of the two best players in
- 21:27Speaker 4: this draft, but also I still think that that's in need.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Even with the veterans Chase On and Landry Paul, I
- 21:32Speaker 4: feel like we need a young third rotational guy in there,
- 21:35Speaker 4: and this seems like the perfect year to go try
- 21:37Speaker 4: to get one of those guys.
- 21:38Speaker 2: It's a stack class.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Now.
- 21:38Speaker 5: You always talk about yourself in terms of being the
- 21:40Speaker 5: defensive guy, and I always date myself by saying, this
- 21:43Speaker 5: is how.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Bill used to do it.
- 21:44Speaker 5: In the old days. They always had some veteran guys
- 21:48Speaker 5: and then they would find a way to get a
- 21:49Speaker 5: younger guy, younger talented guy to sort of apprentice underneath them.
- 21:53Speaker 5: That's why if you had an opportunity, it doesn't look
- 21:56Speaker 5: like it's gonna happen. But if you had an opportunity
- 21:58Speaker 5: to get Abdul Carter, that would be an absolute home run.
- 22:01Speaker 5: But there are still some other options here. And I know,
- 22:04Speaker 5: you know, Evan and Chris, you know were frothing at
- 22:07Speaker 5: the mouth with all these different names. I gravitate to
- 22:10Speaker 5: the Georgia guys. I love the idea of getting a
- 22:13Speaker 5: young edge guy to pair with Landry and Chase on
- 22:17Speaker 5: and sort of not necessarily be counted on to come in,
- 22:21Speaker 5: you know, sight unseen right away and be a double
- 22:23Speaker 5: digit sack guy. He can sort of learn and pick
- 22:26Speaker 5: his spots and be a part time player at first.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Evan lay it on me, abdul Carter, just just give
- 22:31Speaker 4: it to me. This guy he's special, He's electric, he's
- 22:34Speaker 4: instant pass rush. I don't know if he'll fall to
- 22:36Speaker 4: the Patriots, but if he did, it would make a
- 22:37Speaker 4: lot of sense.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you said he's electric. I mean he's a dynamic player.
- 22:41Speaker 3: When you turn on the film his play speed, He's
- 22:44Speaker 3: moving at a different pace a lot of the time
- 22:46Speaker 3: than other people on the field. His pass rush, I
- 22:49Speaker 3: would say, is mostly speed. You know he's gonna win
- 22:51Speaker 3: with ghost rush to handswipe, a little bit of a
- 22:54Speaker 3: dip rip, you know, things like that crossover move inside,
- 22:57Speaker 3: really good on stunts, really good on the interior of
- 23:00Speaker 3: the offensive line, which is what I really like about him.
- 23:03Speaker 3: If you want to stand him up over the guard
- 23:05Speaker 3: over the center and have him brush from a two
- 23:07Speaker 3: point stance from in line on third down, he can
- 23:09Speaker 3: do that. He can play a little bit off the ball,
- 23:12Speaker 3: did that early on in his career at Penn State
- 23:14Speaker 3: and spy quarterbacks if you want him to do that.
- 23:17Speaker 3: So it's pretty much anything that you want him to
- 23:19Speaker 3: do from a pass rush front seven standpoint, Abdul Carter
- 23:23Speaker 3: can do. And I think the two comparisons you hear
- 23:26Speaker 3: about the most with him or Von Miller at Michael Parsons.
- 23:28Speaker 3: You know, he tends to gravitate more towards the Von
- 23:31Speaker 3: Miller komp himself. That's what he said at the combine.
- 23:34Speaker 3: But number eleven at Penn State with the cutoff Jersey,
- 23:37Speaker 3: it's easy to see Michael Parsons there as well.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Big time Chris, what do you think?
- 23:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think atis and I've talked about
- 23:44Speaker 1: on previous podcasts like Abdull Carter is just so so
- 23:48Speaker 1: appealing and if he falls to that sort of spot
- 23:50Speaker 1: for the Patriots, like, I don't know how you pass
- 23:52Speaker 1: up on that. You know, you need a guy to
- 23:54Speaker 1: bolster that line, that defensive line, defensive front. You know,
- 23:59Speaker 1: they have the divisions of Landry and Chase On. They
- 24:02Speaker 1: have Keon Wydo to account play a edge role. They
- 24:05Speaker 1: have Afferny Jennings. But I think they really still need
- 24:08Speaker 1: that young talent to really bolster them. I think that's important.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And I think there's a lot of other guys in
- 24:14Speaker 1: Day two and Day three as well who have a
- 24:16Speaker 1: lot of promise.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Well, let's get into it. I mean, we can't spend
- 24:18Speaker 4: as much time on everybody as we just did on
- 24:20Speaker 4: Abdul Carter. So I'm gonna fire a few guys. Paul,
- 24:22Speaker 4: you mentioned the Georgia guys and I've been talking about
- 24:24Speaker 4: and I'm gonna keep Mikel Williams in this group. I
- 24:26Speaker 4: might save Jalen Walker for the linebackers. That's just personal preference.
- 24:29Speaker 4: If you guys feel differently, please you know, discuss. But
- 24:32Speaker 4: Mikel Williams what's been appealing to me? And I know
- 24:34Speaker 4: he's kind of all.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Over the place, but just twenty years.
- 24:37Speaker 4: Old, he's got all the tools. He's still raw. It's
- 24:40Speaker 4: more of a projection. But to me he seems like
- 24:43Speaker 4: maybe not quite the electric, stand up kind of guy
- 24:46Speaker 4: off the edge Abdul Carter was, but he's a legit
- 24:48Speaker 4: hand down. If you want to stand him up a
- 24:50Speaker 4: little bit, you can. I keep using the William McGinnis
- 24:52Speaker 4: comp just a versatile guy you can stick on the
- 24:54Speaker 4: edge and he could probably do anything. He's a favorite
- 24:56Speaker 4: of mine. Nick Gorton's another favorite of mine, and Shamar Stewart.
- 24:59Speaker 4: I just throw those those three guys at you right now.
- 25:01Speaker 4: I know there are a couple others, Mike Green being one,
- 25:03Speaker 4: but those are three guys that all kind of stand
- 25:05Speaker 4: out to me. Play hard, play with an excellent effort,
- 25:09Speaker 4: and I think that you know, and certainly Stuart and
- 25:11Speaker 4: s Gorton are really good testers as well.
- 25:13Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think there's a difference between a four
- 25:15Speaker 5: to three end and an edge guts we're to figure
- 25:18Speaker 5: And I think that's where you you know, what you
- 25:20Speaker 5: were talking about. I think, you know, I think s Gorton,
- 25:22Speaker 5: I think is more of a four to three end
- 25:24Speaker 5: than say, like Jalen Walker, who is if he's going
- 25:26Speaker 5: to play on the line, it's going to be strictly
- 25:29Speaker 5: as a stand up edge guy. So I agree with you,
- 25:31Speaker 5: those aren't necessarily the same. I like a lot of
- 25:33Speaker 5: the names you threw out there.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Ef.
- 25:35Speaker 5: I'm gonna let you go because I know that you
- 25:37Speaker 5: break down these guys in a lot more detail than
- 25:39Speaker 5: than I do. So yeah, I'm not going to waste
- 25:41Speaker 5: anybody's time.
- 25:42Speaker 3: I would just say with Mikel Williams, you're really projecting
- 25:45Speaker 3: him into a larger pass rushing role than what he
- 25:48Speaker 3: did at Georgia. I think the thing that's appealing with
- 25:50Speaker 3: him though at Georgia is that he did a lot
- 25:52Speaker 3: of the dirty work on that defensive line. You see
- 25:54Speaker 3: him take on blocks, slipping the gaps, you know, push
- 25:57Speaker 3: runners out, you know, make them bounce runs out the edge.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Like He'll do a lot of that kind of stuff
- 26:02Speaker 3: that isn't going to show up in the box score,
- 26:04Speaker 3: you know, playing that four eye shade inside the tackle.
- 26:07Speaker 3: But if you move him outside the tackle, does he
- 26:10Speaker 3: have more pass rush production? And he has flashes of that,
- 26:13Speaker 3: especially in that game against Texas and Calvin Banks, where
- 26:16Speaker 3: he can do those types of things. I think once
- 26:18Speaker 3: you get down that line, know, after the Mikel Williams
- 26:21Speaker 3: and the Shamar Stewarts, you start to get into this
- 26:24Speaker 3: just really good deep class of edge rushers that is
- 26:28Speaker 3: basically just goes all the way till rounds. I would
- 26:31Speaker 3: say five and six. I have twelve guys in the
- 26:34Speaker 3: first two rounds right now at the edge position, So
- 26:38Speaker 3: I think we can go rapid fire at some point here.
- 26:40Speaker 3: But I'll let Chris give.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you hit it. I mean this class
- 26:44Speaker 1: is so deep at the EDG Rudger position and one
- 26:46Speaker 1: of them James Spears Junior at Tennessee. He relies heavily
- 26:49Speaker 1: on his speed.
- 26:49Speaker 2: But boise fast.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Yeah, gets off that edge real quick. Another guy, Mike Green,
- 26:54Speaker 1: I mean he's had a really great standout performance at
- 26:57Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl on mobile, which great to see a
- 27:00Speaker 1: lot of power, a lot of strength.
- 27:02Speaker 2: You know.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Another guy spent four years at Florida, just spent this
- 27:06Speaker 1: past year ole Miss Princely Uma, melan Um and melan
- 27:12Speaker 1: Another guy, Uh, he had a really solid four years
- 27:16Speaker 1: at Florida, but really stuck out this year. I don't
- 27:18Speaker 1: miss so I really like him.
- 27:20Speaker 5: For him, you we'll have a special guest spot on.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Exactly exactly And uh, my last guy is JTW.
- 27:31Speaker 2: You're blasting that out.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I can figure it out from last episode.
- 27:34Speaker 5: Better stick with the easier names.
- 27:35Speaker 1: No, that's all right, that's all right.
- 27:37Speaker 2: But you know j T.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Another guy just really had a great season this year,
- 27:40Speaker 1: twelve and a half sacks at Ohio State. Uh yeah,
- 27:42Speaker 1: just won a national championship. And you know it's been
- 27:45Speaker 1: in mentality, So he's.
- 27:46Speaker 4: Another one, maybe more of the fourth three and two
- 27:48Speaker 4: other fourth three ends I'd mentioned. It's just Davian Jones, uh,
- 27:51Speaker 4: you know, top four three N and Jack Sawyer os
- 27:53Speaker 4: U guy, I mean Ohio State. You know, my my
- 27:55Speaker 4: brabele might gravitate towards those guys. Give me a few
- 27:58Speaker 4: rapid fire edges before we move on to.
- 28:00Speaker 3: The Yeah, the Ohio State guys are definitely worth talking about,
- 28:03Speaker 3: just because of the Rabel connection there, and Jack Sawyer
- 28:06Speaker 3: just screams rable to me. Just the intangibles and the
- 28:08Speaker 3: leadership and the big plays in big moments down the
- 28:12Speaker 3: stretch there for the Buckeyes. I do think we should
- 28:15Speaker 3: mention Donovan Azaraku from BC just because he's a local
- 28:18Speaker 3: kid and I think he's gonna probably go top twenty,
- 28:20Speaker 3: top twenty five, So maybe outside of the Patriots range,
- 28:23Speaker 3: but just a twitched up rusher, really good three cone time,
- 28:27Speaker 3: really good change of direction, ability, speed rusher off the edge.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Just a couple other guys. Landon Jackson from Arkansas I
- 28:34Speaker 3: think is another one of those Jack Sawyer types, right,
- 28:37Speaker 3: that's gonna probably put his hand in the dirt most
- 28:40Speaker 3: of the time, and then we start to get into
- 28:42Speaker 3: like late Day two, early day three. Kyle Canard from
- 28:44Speaker 3: South Carolina, another long, powerful edge rusher, had some really
- 28:49Speaker 3: good tape against Will Campbell this past year. Olu Oladejo
- 28:54Speaker 3: from UCLA really great Senior Bowl week, high motor, aggressive,
- 29:00Speaker 3: angry player, just runs hot all throughout the week there
- 29:03Speaker 3: in mobile and I think those are going to be
- 29:06Speaker 3: the effort and finished guys. That variable's probably going to
- 29:09Speaker 3: gravitate towards. And then the last one here, the local
- 29:11Speaker 3: guy for you, apolog Jasiah Stewart from Michigan played at
- 29:14Speaker 3: every high you know, the Paul Perrillo established.
- 29:19Speaker 5: I'll telly you he might be the last one in
- 29:20Speaker 5: the pipeline too. You know, we've lost the coach. I
- 29:23Speaker 5: don't know how many more pros we're going to be
- 29:24Speaker 5: churning out. But yeah, he's one.
- 29:26Speaker 3: So he's he's a little undersized, but he's a screamer
- 29:29Speaker 3: off the edge, and his tam against USC was phenomenal.
- 29:32Speaker 3: I think he had eleven pressures in that game against USC.
- 29:35Speaker 3: So he's got a real pass rush juice. He's probably
- 29:38Speaker 3: gonna be a situational rusher play on third downs things
- 29:41Speaker 3: like that. You know, josh U j type of role,
- 29:43Speaker 3: but he's a really good pass rusher.
- 29:44Speaker 4: Yeah, that to me is appealing because I think that's
- 29:46Speaker 4: something they need to address. A couple older guys at
- 29:48Speaker 4: defensive end. Get some young legs in there so as
- 29:51Speaker 4: we get down into the later rounds. For me, edge guys,
- 29:53Speaker 4: I want pass rush, I want to beat. I like
- 29:55Speaker 4: these big, powerful guys, but I think those are more
- 29:56Speaker 4: flyers and you kind of have those guys already. All right,
- 29:59Speaker 4: let's move onto the defensive line. Of course, Milton Williams
- 30:02Speaker 4: a huge piece of the Patriots offseason. Little uncertainty still
- 30:05Speaker 4: with Christian Barmore. They signed Tonga as well. Seems like
- 30:08Speaker 4: they're in the remake process on the interior of this
- 30:11Speaker 4: offensive defensive line. I would say I would classify this
- 30:14Speaker 4: as maybe a flyer need you know, Paul, like, these
- 30:17Speaker 4: big guys are usually available. You can get you know,
- 30:19Speaker 4: get some insurance for Tonga, maybe get a developmental defensive
- 30:22Speaker 4: tackle guy. Of course, Mason Graham, Derek Harmon, and Walter
- 30:26Speaker 4: Nolan kind of the big three, and we've talked a
- 30:28Speaker 4: lot about Mason Graham. To me, he's kind of off
- 30:30Speaker 4: the board now, just with the redundancy with Milton Williams
- 30:33Speaker 4: and Christian Carmon.
- 30:33Speaker 5: I mean, that's what it would seem to me. I'm
- 30:36Speaker 5: gonna hesitate to take him off the board only because
- 30:39Speaker 5: of their insistence on using terms like we're going to
- 30:42Speaker 5: take the best player available. And if you have made
- 30:45Speaker 5: that argument, you could make an argument for Mason Graham
- 30:48Speaker 5: being the best player, presuming that Carter an unhunter or
- 30:52Speaker 5: off the board. I would agree with you. I think this.
- 30:55Speaker 5: You know, him and Milton Williams are very similar body
- 30:58Speaker 5: types and play styles, you know, so I don't know
- 31:03Speaker 5: if you need two of those. But you know, when
- 31:05Speaker 5: has anyone ever said, you know what, you know what
- 31:07Speaker 5: the problem is? We have too much talent here, no one,
- 31:09Speaker 5: No one's ever said that he's a good player.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Derek Harmon two a favorite of mine. Evan like just
- 31:13Speaker 4: a guy that could probably move around a bunch like
- 31:15Speaker 4: Derek Harmono. Tough player, tough player, probably going to go
- 31:17Speaker 4: in the donut as I like to call it, in
- 31:19Speaker 4: between where the Patriots are going to pick somewhere probably
- 31:21Speaker 4: in the top ten and those early teens. That seems
- 31:24Speaker 4: a perfect spot for him.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Yeah, He's one of those guys too, along with Kenneth
- 31:28Speaker 3: Grant that I feel like would be good fits, but
- 31:30Speaker 3: are probably going to be in the donut. That's a
- 31:32Speaker 3: good one, a good term for both of those guys.
- 31:34Speaker 3: I think both those guys can play a little bit
- 31:37Speaker 3: closer to the ball, maybe at the nose tackle position
- 31:40Speaker 3: or the one technique shaded into the A gap, And
- 31:43Speaker 3: that's the one thing I would look at with these
- 31:44Speaker 3: defensive lineman potentially, is somebody that can do that, because
- 31:48Speaker 3: I think they're going to have enough pass rushers on
- 31:50Speaker 3: the interior between Milton Williams, Kean White and hopefully Christian Barmore,
- 31:55Speaker 3: They're gonna have enough juice there at the three technique
- 31:57Speaker 3: or you know, those pass rushing spots on the defensive line.
- 32:01Speaker 3: The real question is is who's going to play the
- 32:02Speaker 3: nose and I think Tonga is probably the short term
- 32:05Speaker 3: answer there. But can they get one of these guys,
- 32:08Speaker 3: you know, even further down the board, like a CJ.
- 32:10Speaker 3: West or Jordan Phillips from Maryland that can also do
- 32:13Speaker 3: that type of thing and just eat space in the
- 32:14Speaker 3: middle of the defense. I would look at maybe that,
- 32:17Speaker 3: maybe more so than you know Darius Alexander from Toledo,
- 32:21Speaker 3: who's a great three technique pass rusher but probably redundant
- 32:24Speaker 3: to what you have already on the roster.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Yeah. I think it's really interesting because I feel like
- 32:28Speaker 1: a lot of this falls on the status of Christian Barmore.
- 32:30Speaker 1: You know, he's such a question mark and obviously you
- 32:33Speaker 1: have to fill these holes when you can, but it's
- 32:35Speaker 1: so hard to tell when you want to fill them
- 32:37Speaker 1: because you one hundred percent don't know what Christian Barmore
- 32:40Speaker 1: is up to. So he's such a like massive piece
- 32:43Speaker 1: on the defensive line, So who knows. But another guy
- 32:45Speaker 1: that you guys haven't mentioned, I like Al Collins from Texas.
- 32:49Speaker 1: You know, big, big fella, just kind of a run
- 32:52Speaker 1: stuff for your prototypical Devon Godshow esque kind of build
- 32:56Speaker 1: on the interior. I really like him, possible Day two guy.
- 33:00Speaker 1: So i'd say, O, don't the guys you've already touched
- 33:02Speaker 1: on as my kind of other one that I want
- 33:04Speaker 1: to mention.
- 33:04Speaker 4: Yeah, just two other ones I'd throw in their ty
- 33:06Speaker 4: Robinson from Nebraska, Tight Hamilton from Ohio States. It's another
- 33:09Speaker 4: couple tough, big guys inside kind of have that verbel
- 33:11Speaker 4: playing style. All right, let's move on, guys, just to
- 33:14Speaker 4: the linebacker group, and again a position in transition maybe
- 33:18Speaker 4: a little bit Robert Splaine, Jack Gibbons in we're here
- 33:20Speaker 4: about Jawan Bentley losing some weight to maybe fill the
- 33:23Speaker 4: need that they have for this kind of scheme that
- 33:25Speaker 4: they want to run.
- 33:26Speaker 2: I don't know if it's a huge need at least on.
- 33:28Speaker 4: The interior, but it does seem like, you know, again,
- 33:31Speaker 4: as we talked about the edge the defensive end, it
- 33:34Speaker 4: kind of gets a little murky. And a guy like
- 33:36Speaker 4: Jalen Walker from Georgia, it's easy to see him being
- 33:39Speaker 4: a movable chess piece.
- 33:40Speaker 2: I mean, he's exciting to watch.
- 33:41Speaker 5: Yeah, and if that's if they want to play him
- 33:43Speaker 5: off the ball, and I know he plays some of
- 33:44Speaker 5: that at Georgia, And you know, I think of like
- 33:46Speaker 5: Nikobe Dean, you know, guys like that in the past.
- 33:49Speaker 5: You don't have to be two fifty two fifty five anymore.
- 33:52Speaker 5: That's the thing I like most about what I'm hearing.
- 33:55Speaker 5: I'll reserve judgment until I see it, But what I'm
- 33:57Speaker 5: hearing about how Mike Vrabel wants to sort of transform
- 34:01Speaker 5: to front seven. That's the thing that excites me the most.
- 34:03Speaker 5: Getting athletes like that in space and being able to
- 34:06Speaker 5: run sideline the sideline.
- 34:07Speaker 4: Yeah, t U up for Jihat Campbell though. Yeah.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Both those guys just with quickly. On Jalen Walker, Who's
- 34:13Speaker 3: just a fantastic football player. I mean he is extinctive, instinctive,
- 34:17Speaker 3: flies to the football, great athleticism, off the charts, versatility,
- 34:21Speaker 3: you can play basically all three linebacker spots. Play him
- 34:24Speaker 3: off the ball, interior pass rush, or on the edge.
- 34:27Speaker 3: I think a lot of people like him best off
- 34:29Speaker 3: the edge, but he to me screams like a Dante
- 34:32Speaker 3: high Tower type of role where he's playing off the
- 34:35Speaker 3: ball on first and second down, and on third down
- 34:37Speaker 3: you put him on the line of scrimmage and let
- 34:39Speaker 3: him rush the passer. This is a guy that you know,
- 34:42Speaker 3: he gives those brave heart speeches right like he's gonna
- 34:44Speaker 3: go up and down the sideline and bark at guys
- 34:47Speaker 3: and get guys going. He did that a couple of
- 34:49Speaker 3: times last year at Georgia. He's a leader of men.
- 34:52Speaker 3: He is a true captain. I can't say enough good
- 34:55Speaker 3: things about Jalen Walker. I just think, you know, for
- 34:57Speaker 3: the Patriots, it's just a matter of of investment on defense, Like,
- 35:02Speaker 3: are we hammering the defense a little bit too much?
- 35:04Speaker 3: A neglecting offense. Once you get away from Carter and Hunter,
- 35:08Speaker 3: now you're talking about Jalen Walker being in the same
- 35:12Speaker 3: kind of tier as like Will Campbell and Tech McMillan
- 35:14Speaker 3: and Tyler Warren and Ashton Genty and is it worth
- 35:17Speaker 3: it at that point to go defense again? But he's
- 35:19Speaker 3: a phenomenal player. Jihad Campbell is another one that I
- 35:23Speaker 3: was surprised early on the media is kind of late
- 35:25Speaker 3: to him. I felt like he is another one of
- 35:28Speaker 3: those prototypical linebackers. I think there's a lot of Jamie
- 35:31Speaker 3: Collins to his game, a ton of athleticism, can play
- 35:34Speaker 3: both roles, Like I said with Jalen Walker as well,
- 35:38Speaker 3: has some really good reps chasing down mobile quarterbacks to
- 35:41Speaker 3: from the second level the defense, can cover, can run
- 35:44Speaker 3: the seam, can cover guys down the field on vertical routes.
- 35:47Speaker 3: He's a really good football player too, probably one of
- 35:50Speaker 3: the first round pick in this class.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, John Campbell's going to find the ball,
- 35:55Speaker 1: you know what I mean. One hundred and nineteen tackles
- 35:57Speaker 1: this year. That's crazy.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:00Speaker 1: I mean, for me, Chris Paul Junior at Ole, Miss
- 36:02Speaker 1: another guy kind of similar to Gid Campbell, a little
- 36:05Speaker 1: bit different, more on the internal part of the linebacker position,
- 36:08Speaker 1: of the middle linebacker role, kind of stopping the run.
- 36:12Speaker 1: More more of a run stopper there. And I mean
- 36:15Speaker 1: I like Kobe King out of Penn State too. I mean,
- 36:17Speaker 1: he sure's a lot of a lot of guess stuff
- 36:19Speaker 1: as well. For me, I like Shamar James out of Florida,
- 36:23Speaker 1: also more of an interior front seven guy, kind of
- 36:27Speaker 1: more of a run stopper there. And Cody Lindenberg of Minnesota.
- 36:30Speaker 4: Good names got. It's just a few more to throw
- 36:32Speaker 4: at you guys before we wrap this up. But Dimetrius
- 36:34Speaker 4: Knight Junior was one guy that stood out to me.
- 36:36Speaker 4: Ran really well at the combine. We're in a four
- 36:38Speaker 4: or five eight. Didn't know if he was gonna do that,
- 36:39Speaker 4: but a bigger guy. He's got kids and married already.
- 36:42Speaker 4: He's like one of those guys that comes out like
- 36:43Speaker 4: he's already a full grown man, knows what he's doing.
- 36:45Speaker 2: I don't know if it's a huge need, but I
- 36:47Speaker 2: like the player. I know.
- 36:47Speaker 4: Jeffrey Bossa too from Oregon is a you know, a
- 36:50Speaker 4: leader guy in the middle, and last one, I just
- 36:52Speaker 4: think really interesting player. Carsion Sweats questions are from UCLA.
- 36:56Speaker 4: Who's a special teamer? Comes on and has you know,
- 36:58Speaker 4: ninety solo tackles, leads the league. You love tackles, Chris,
- 37:01Speaker 4: you know, the most tackles in FBS solo tackles. So,
- 37:03Speaker 4: you know, I just love that story.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Intense guy.
- 37:05Speaker 4: I don't know if these guys really fit anybody out
- 37:07Speaker 4: of those group that send out to you.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Yeah, so questioner and Danny Stutsman from Oklahoma, I feel
- 37:13Speaker 3: like are in a similar category of like kind of
- 37:15Speaker 3: Robert Spelaney almost in a way where like you just
- 37:18Speaker 3: watch them play and they just run hot. You know,
- 37:20Speaker 3: they are constantly around the football, They're flying around the field.
- 37:23Speaker 3: They play with great effort, in great just hustle and
- 37:27Speaker 3: really max out the athletic gifts that they have with
- 37:30Speaker 3: instincts and hustle. So those two guys, I would say
- 37:33Speaker 3: are are verable type of guys just from that standpoint.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Jeffrey Basa from Oregon, though, I think, is a really
- 37:39Speaker 3: interesting player. He started at safety at Oregon then moved
- 37:42Speaker 3: to linebacker. Probably the best coverage linebacker in this part
- 37:46Speaker 3: portion of the class, you know, Day three, early Day three,
- 37:50Speaker 3: late Day two type of portion. So if they're looking
- 37:53Speaker 3: for a true third down coverage linebacker, he has some
- 37:56Speaker 3: really high level reps covering guys down the field and
- 38:00Speaker 3: catching guys down the field in zone coverage. So those
- 38:03Speaker 3: are some of the names I would say, you know,
- 38:06Speaker 3: probably not really a need they're going to go for
- 38:08Speaker 3: in the top one hundred, but maybe one of those
- 38:10Speaker 3: guys were to slip into the fourth round.
- 38:13Speaker 4: All right, well that's gonna do it for this edition
- 38:15Speaker 4: of Patriots Draft Countdown, wrapping up the front seven. And
- 38:17Speaker 4: look this, it's already April, guys. The draft is fast approaching.
- 38:21Speaker 4: Stick with us a few more episodes to go here
