Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Labour takes a huge election gamble
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So let's talk about that weird interview yesterday. No, not
- 0:03Speaker 1: the one with Winston Peters, the one with Chris Hopkins.
- 0:06Speaker 1: He has planted labor in an almost impossible to justify
- 0:10Speaker 1: a position on New Zealand Super. Hear me out on this.
- 0:13Speaker 1: This was yesterday on Rainbridge, today on Herald Now I'm three.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Yesterday he said labor will not change the age of entitlement,
- 0:21Speaker 1: will not means test ended. Super will not cut it,
- 0:24Speaker 1: will not touch it, and will keep it full indefinitely.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Big call, big thing to say. We currently have around
- 0:32Speaker 1: four people working to support every pensioner. That will be
- 0:36Speaker 1: two workers for every pensioner within the next ten to
- 0:38Speaker 1: twenty years. Anyone with half a brain can see this
- 0:41Speaker 1: thing is not sustainable in full forever. And don't get
- 0:45Speaker 1: me wrong, I don't want to cut any more than
- 0:47Speaker 1: anyone else. I want to get the full entitlement when
- 0:49Speaker 1: I hit sixty five, thank you very much. But I
- 0:51Speaker 1: know it's probably not going to happen. I recall following
- 0:55Speaker 1: Phil Goff on the campaign trail back in twenty eleven.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It was a hospital pass. He was all about making
- 1:01Speaker 1: the hard decisions for tomorrow today. That was his catch crime. Well,
- 1:05Speaker 1: Chippy is running from that motto quicker than Usain Bolton,
- 1:08Speaker 1: the pair of Nikes. What he's doing here is making
- 1:11Speaker 1: a pretty blunt political assessment. I reckon this will win
- 1:15Speaker 1: us some working class votes and keep us competitive with
- 1:17Speaker 1: Winston and National. He's going after laborers. He's going after
- 1:23Speaker 1: workers who are outside who can't wait till sixty five
- 1:27Speaker 1: to retire, let alone sixty seven. He's going after low
- 1:30Speaker 1: wage workers who can barely afford groceries right now, let
- 1:33Speaker 1: alone an extra three and a half percent on compulsory
- 1:36Speaker 1: key Wei saver. You could argue that this is smart politics,
- 1:40Speaker 1: pick a point of difference, hammer at home. The risk
- 1:43Speaker 1: for labor though here is massive because tax is there.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Achilles Heel telling people you will keep an unterfundable, expensive
- 1:51Speaker 1: universal program forever will leave them wondering, well, who's going
- 1:54Speaker 1: to pay for that? Who will be taxed next? And
- 1:58Speaker 1: once you add in the paye he claims up to
- 2:01Speaker 1: thirteen billion dollars, the gap starts to look more like well,
- 2:05Speaker 1: big black holes. For more from early edition with Ryan Bridge,
- 2:10Speaker 1: listen live to News Talks it'd be from five am weekdays,
