Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Kindness has its limits
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Kiwis are generally known around the world as good sorts,
- 0:03Speaker 1: good people. We open doors, we say please and thank you,
- 0:05Speaker 1: We help a neighbor out. We leap into help people
- 0:08Speaker 1: when helpers need it. It's one of those traits that
- 0:11Speaker 1: we're most proud of as a country, I think. But
- 0:13Speaker 1: one thing we hate more than anything else is when
- 0:16Speaker 1: that kindness is taken for granted. Then there is no
- 0:19Speaker 1: more mister nice guy. And we saw this with the
- 0:22Speaker 1: kids stealing from dairies and ram raiding the poor, old,
- 0:25Speaker 1: hard working dairy owners. The minute they started destroying livelihoods
- 0:29Speaker 1: beating people with screwdrivers and hammers, sympathy evaporated. Sure, some
- 0:35Speaker 1: of these kids may have had hard upbringings, but there
- 0:38Speaker 1: are plenty of kids out there with tough upbringings who
- 0:40Speaker 1: choose not to drive anus antita through a four square
- 0:43Speaker 1: window at three am aren't there. So we voted for
- 0:47Speaker 1: boot camps. We reversed our no chase police chase policy.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We crack down. Kindness has its limits. A long time
- 0:55Speaker 1: ago for those who frequent the city, we crossed the
- 0:57Speaker 1: same line with beggars and rough sleepers. We care about them,
- 1:01Speaker 1: of course we do. We're not a holes. We donate
- 1:04Speaker 1: our time and our money to the city mission, to charities,
- 1:07Speaker 1: we pay our taxes knowing that they should be going
- 1:09Speaker 1: to help in some way improve their lives. But there
- 1:12Speaker 1: are also a bunch of idiots taking advantage with squirted
- 1:16Speaker 1: bottles at traffic lights. They can be quite aggressive and dangerous.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Not to mention same goes for rough sleepers on the
- 1:22Speaker 1: footpaths and some of our biggest cities. It's costing businesses,
- 1:26Speaker 1: it's destroying the reputation of entire swathes of city shops.
- 1:32Speaker 1: These shops provide jobs for the rest of us, especially
- 1:35Speaker 1: in our biggest city where foreign terrists first impression should
- 1:38Speaker 1: be not a punch up between two ruffies on the footpath.
- 1:42Speaker 1: So while the headlines about this move on policy, like
- 1:46Speaker 1: the crackdown on ram raiders before it, or the hard
- 1:50Speaker 1: line on ko tenants who were throwing knives across the
- 1:53Speaker 1: fence or bottles across the fence to their neighbors before it,
- 1:57Speaker 1: they will scream cruel and mean in the papers. But
- 2:01Speaker 1: I think they are out of step with the reality
- 2:04Speaker 1: of people and the reality that these people are facing
- 2:07Speaker 1: in their own lives. The good Grace cup hath runneth
