Transcript
- 0:01Hello and welcome back to Doctor Who Top Ten.
- 0:05I am recording this very early in the morning, hence the state
- 0:10of my voice today. But today we are concentrating
- 0:14on the top ten of Hamster contributor Steven B.
- 0:20Now let me tell you a little bit about Steven.
- 0:23He first came to my attention with his podcast New to Who,
- 0:28which has been on a long hiatus now, but it's still out there
- 0:33for everybody to enjoy. Stephen and I managed to hook up
- 0:38through Nathan Bottomley and that's hook up in the friendship
- 0:42way, not in the sexual way. And we started to zoom each
- 0:48other. There were flight for entirety
- 0:50socials. We started to zoom together,
- 0:53realized that we had very similar temperaments,
- 0:56personalities, both quiet, gentle people and both of the
- 1:00huge love of Doctor Who. Eventually Steven came to
- 1:05England from Australia to or from Singapore, actually to stay
- 1:11with us for a couple of weeks, and it was two of the most
- 1:15wonderful weeks of my life. We visited the locations of the
- 1:18Android invasion, the androids of Tara.
- 1:21Sorry, it's early. And Castrvalva, which is one of
- 1:25his favorite stories and he did a amazing hamster commentary on
- 1:30and we just had the most wonderful time.
- 1:32Like talking with this fella is the easiest thing you could ever
- 1:35do in the world. And I got to talk with him
- 1:38nonstop for about two weeks. And Steven has also taken it
- 1:44upon himself to do something very bold, very audacious, which
- 1:50is to create an alternative take on Doctor Who, which he calls
- 1:56reimagining. Doctor Who on Twitter is at
- 2:00reimagining who I believe, and I'm going to ask him to put in
- 2:05the Twitter thread below all the links to the page.
- 2:11Or I will do that. But essentially he is taking
- 2:13hold of all the nuts and bolts of classic Doctor Who,
- 2:17reimagining it in an almost new series like Way and his blog
- 2:23which is beautifully put together.
- 2:26It's so stylishly done. He has written out a small sort
- 2:31of synopsis for every single story, and then a scene by scene
- 2:38breakdown of each story as well, with sort of AI generated
- 2:41pictures of alternative doctors and companions as he perceives
- 2:47them. It's bold and brilliant and
- 2:49imaginative and crazy and it's going to make you thrilled and
- 2:55frustrated and all the things in between, because it is daring to
- 3:01suggest that there was a different, potentially better
- 3:05way. If anybody was to undertake this
- 3:09enormous task, of course it was going to be Steven.
- 3:13And it is as detailed and as brilliant as you can possibly
- 3:17imagine, so check that out. But for now, let's take hold of
- 3:22this gorgeous man's top ten and see if it chimes with us.
- 3:27So Steven has given me a top ten, and he's written out an
- 3:31explanation for why with each one.
- 3:35So we're starting with the war machines, which Stephen says for
- 3:411/2 glimpse of what Hartnell's Dr. looks like in a London
- 3:45transformed and even reborn since his last visit less than 3
- 3:49short years ago. And you know what?
- 3:52He fits straight in. He does.
- 3:54And in fact that's not a new thing when you think about
- 3:57Doctor Who later on. It's not.
- 3:58It's not a bold thing to have a contemporary London story where
- 4:02the Doctor's working alongside the military.
- 4:05But at that point, a Doctor Who's run just to have a
- 4:07contemporary Doctor Who's story was bold.
- 4:10Hartnell's era was bold to the last, wasn't it?
- 4:13And for giving us Polly and Ben. Oh my God, I bloody love dodos.
- 4:18You know, I'd really like to go to the hottest nightclub in
- 4:20town. All those things in the Inferno
- 4:23nightclub are just so unique, aren't they?
- 4:25Even in the 60s? Doctor Who?
- 4:28Come on, Dodo, the Navy's in trouble.
- 4:31Hi. I mean, Polly and Ben are just
- 4:33instantly, instantly likable. Very sexy.
- 4:38And this is just a very stylishly put together story as
- 4:41well. So that is a top choice.
- 4:44Thank you Steven. I believe we're going to do that
- 4:46as a commentary at some point. His second choice is the
- 4:50invasion for the hang time and the hang Time.
- 4:54He's put in inverted commas there because that's a Nathan
- 4:57Bottomley phrase we get with the Brig Benton and our free
- 5:01regulars, along with the wonderful Isabel in the then
- 5:04contemporary London. A reaccumbing theme in this
- 5:07list. I love this Spyfy version of 60s
- 5:11London that never existed, and not just in Doctor Who.
- 5:15SPYFY, which I'd never heard before until Steven and I
- 5:19committed to a four hour long hamster with a blunt penknife.
- 5:24The Invasion commentary? Go check that out.
- 5:27I'll put those in the Twitter thread as well.
- 5:31It's glorious, isn't it? The Invasion.
- 5:33I imagine that would turn up on quite a few people's list.
- 5:36Even the Invasion or the war machines from series 6.
- 5:40Parker. Oh oh, you're a fool.
- 5:45Form. I mean, I love it.
- 5:47Hey, are you thinking rich? He's right.
- 5:50There are brilliant, brilliant characters in this.
- 5:52But I also think as well there's some of the most stylishly
- 5:55shocked. So I've been scenes as well,
- 5:57especially in the last sort of three episodes.
- 6:00Excellent choice. Nothing too objective here so
- 6:03far. Oh, I believe this might have
- 6:06been on every list so far, or if not on every list so far.
- 6:10It's certainly been on one Terror of the Autumns.
- 6:14And Steven says for the Target novelization and introduction of
- 6:18the shows. Sorry, in the introduction of
- 6:21the shows Cozy Warm Blanket, The Unit Family, which incidentally
- 6:27absolutely includes the villain of the piece, Care of the
- 6:31Autumns. You have Fisted, Bumbender You
- 6:35are. I refuse to be worried by
- 6:36someone called The Master. He's a he's an unimaginative
- 6:40plodder. It's four episodes of craziness,
- 6:45isn't it? Craziness.
- 6:46Color scares. Was Robert Holmes ever this
- 6:50naughty again? I don't think he was, you know,
- 6:54and I think Dudley Simpson work into his brief of doing an
- 6:59electronic score. He does a really good job in
- 7:02this, doesn't he? The.
- 7:07OK, I won't do the master fame, but you know which one I mean.
- 7:10Yeah, the Pertway's popular in these top ten lists.
- 7:13I've noticed he's still very, very popular.
- 7:17On to one of my favorites, Invasion of the Dinosaurs, for
- 7:22being a perfect rainy Saturday afternoon 6th passer that says
- 7:26so much that it's still wrong with our society, politics, hand
- 7:30culture. Malcolm Holk, who writes a
- 7:34brilliant sort of adventure story full of incident, full of
- 7:38drama, full of jeopardy, but gives Doctor Who a point as
- 7:43well. It gives it a moral and it says
- 7:47something about society. Yeah, you're right, Steven,
- 7:50that's a brilliant choice. Plus this has some excellent
- 7:56dinosaur. I think this is on Joe Schulz
- 7:58list as well, wasn't it? People have got such a hard on.
- 8:01Well sorry Joe Short hasn't got hard on.
- 8:03People have got such a love for these dinosaurs.
- 8:07I think wonderful wonderful. Especially like the dinosaur.
- 8:13The Tyrannosaurus Rex versus the Oh my God, what's the one with
- 8:18the spikes on his back? Brontosaurus Diplodocus.
- 8:23Dinosaur on dinosaur action. Don't mean in a kinky way.
- 8:27In episode 6. And the Doctor and the Brigadier
- 8:30Dr. under it with a UNIT Jeep. I mean, you don't get that shit
- 8:34on any other show, do you? Oh my God, my Ralph would be so
- 8:38happy with this next choice. The Android invasion for being
- 8:43the forgotten story. Lost in the folds of your
- 8:46favorite sofa That is Hinchcliff and Homes.
- 8:49Is it flawed? You bet.
- 8:51Is it any good? Even that is debatable, but for
- 8:54Tom and Liz, traipsing about the English green and pleasant
- 8:57summertime land while treating us to an episode of The
- 9:00Avengers, it's superb. From You know, I never used to
- 9:05like this one. And since the man I fell in love
- 9:08with has beaten me around the head, taking me to Didcot and
- 9:14made me watch it more times than I care to with two separate
- 9:18commentaries with him, he has worn me down.
- 9:21And now I think it's glorious. Get back, Steven.
- 9:25You know the real Joe wasn't even wearing a scarf.
- 9:30What have you done with Joel? The next choice is Castra Valva.
- 9:36And he puts just because you know, you and I know precisely
- 9:41why, my gentle friend. Now seek out Stevens Castra
- 9:45Valva commentary because he really does an excellent job of
- 9:49using the Target novel as an anchor for that conversation
- 9:53because he loves the targets and he particularly loves Castro
- 9:56Valva. Unfortunately, due to Wi-Fi and
- 10:01how I was recording at the time, Steven Sound isn't great on that
- 10:05recording, but some persevere because his insights are
- 10:10extraordinary. Listen, slightly obvious choice
- 10:15now, but I'm surprised it hasn't turned off on our list yet.
- 10:18The Five Doctors for being the only reunion I've ever been.
- 10:22Part of that lived up to the promise of being fun and funny.
- 10:26Sometimes all I want to do is see my friends and myself as we
- 10:29were once together, even in the briefest of moments.
- 10:33And this hits that very specific spot.
- 10:37Yeah, The Five Doctors, which is exemplified by the brilliant new
- 10:42version on the Blu rays that came out, is it's just a
- 10:46masterpiece. I do wonder whether the
- 10:48direction is a bit ponderous, but I don't think it even
- 10:51matters because just the joy of seeing Trout and Pertwee Davison
- 10:57clips of Tom Baker Hundle doing a fine First Doctor impression.
- 11:02All of those companions, all of those monsters, all coming
- 11:05together in a story that's the the probably the most quotable
- 11:10Doctor Who story. Oh, it's just glorious.
- 11:13It is glorious. Every scene is a delight.
- 11:18Right on to the new series now. So we've got a couple of new
- 11:21series episodes, one from Russie Davis this time and one from
- 11:27Stephen Moffett. So we've got the girl in the
- 11:30fireplace because there comes a time when every lonely little
- 11:33boy must learn how to dance. And because you know what Series
- 11:372 means and still means to me. Stephen says I do, I do, And we
- 11:43probably should talk about the girl in the fireplace one day,
- 11:46which I still think is extraordinary.
- 11:48I remember a female friend of mine who had never watched
- 11:51Doctor Who before but heard this one was going to be sort of a
- 11:55bit more romancy. Stuck this one on, and she
- 11:58phoned me afterwards and left a message and said that was one of
- 12:01the best bits of telly that she'd ever seen.
- 12:03I mean is cool in terms of production value.
- 12:06So I'm talking about design, lighting, set dressing.
- 12:10It's one of the most beautiful Doctor Who stories in terms of
- 12:14the lyrical, romantic dialogue. I don't think it was ever
- 12:19bettered in terms of a carrot study for the Doctor.
- 12:23It's certainly out there as a performance piece.
- 12:26It's brilliant on every level. I think you get like a 123 bang,
- 12:30Bang Bang with School Reunion, The Girl in the Fireplace and
- 12:36Sorry, School Reunion, Tucson Claw School Reunion, The Girl in
- 12:40the Fireplace. That is a triple whammy at the
- 12:43start of series 2. And that's a series that not
- 12:46many people think much of, except for Steven and myself.
- 12:51And finally we've got The Beast below, which is an unusual and
- 12:56brilliant choice, I think, for the tantalizing vision of Doctor
- 13:00Who as all out fairy tale, complete with a moral of the
- 13:04story, while still being about both lovely and loathsome
- 13:08people, but especially England and the English are, can and
- 13:13should be. And for what you do when you
- 13:16think there are no good choices left open to you.
- 13:19What do you want? What do you want?
- 13:21Sorry, you do want the Doctor does Steven.
- 13:27I've lost his sentence. Oh, sorry.
- 13:31You do what the Doctor does and take another choice and make
- 13:34things better. See, I got there in the end.
- 13:38I've never thought much of the Beast below, so maybe this is
- 13:41one I need to reevaluate. And I found just the Stephen and
- 13:44Fraser that I can do it with. He says, oh, I can rave about
- 13:49the Beast below underneath when I said not an obvious choice.
- 13:54Yeah, it certainly is a vivid story, and it is in that very
- 13:58early fairy tale period of Matt Smith's time.
- 14:02I think the interaction between Smith and Gillan YBA is best
- 14:06here as well. Perhaps this deserves
- 14:09reevaluation. I will get there.
- 14:13And oh, he's added an extra 1 here.
- 14:15The stones of blood for being what the Android invasion is.
- 14:18Except this time as an episode of the New Avengers starring a
- 14:22real life goddess. Mary Tam as Athena, as Romana to
- 14:27Tom's Odysseus as the Doctor. Say he is brilliant.
- 14:31Wow, what a great observation. And of course the stones of
- 14:35blood you get. And the cause of science.
- 14:39I think it's our duty to capture that creature.
- 14:42We could track it to its layer. Come on.
- 14:46Oh, and the same with the hikers as well.
- 14:48She turns up on Ice World later on, that woman, so maybe she
- 14:52didn't die after all. It is glorious.
- 14:54The Stones of Blood. It's so funny.
- 14:56I think line for line is as funny as Sit Your Death, and I
- 15:00think it has some proper scares. It has some brilliant Doctor
- 15:05Romano moments. It is just sublime throughout.
- 15:09And that is Steven's list. What an amazing list.
- 15:13You're going to hear a lot more from Steven in the future.
- 15:16We've got some more exciting commentaries planned, but in the
- 15:20meantime, take a look at reimagining Doctor Who.
- 15:24The man is a genius, and just for the the daring to take on
- 15:29such a insane task and do it with such detail.
- 15:35He's he's wonderful. Steven, from me to you.
- 15:40I love you, my friend.
