- 1:22What's the matter? What is this another case for Nick Cotter, Master
- 1:25Detective. Yes, it's another case for that most famous of all men hunters,
- 1:38the detective whose ability at solving crime is unequaled in the history of detective
- 1:42fiction, Nick Carter, Master Detective. The Night's Curious Adventure, The Drug
- 1:49Ring Murder for Nick Carter, and the Mystery of the Left Well, mister
- 2:02Nicholas Carter, are you going to answer your telephone? Are you going to
- 2:06take me out? To lunch as you promise. There's no reason why I
- 2:07can't do both, Pancy. Nick Carter speaking jig. This is Riley at
- 2:13headquarters, ohetenant murder when you're right in the middle of it, Nick,
- 2:20meet me at the City Mark as quick as you can. I'm waiting here.
- 2:22It's a matter rally, cam'p headquarters of this games without me? Who
- 2:24said anything about yourself and the keys? You get yourself down to the more
- 2:29right away, and that's an order, an order rally. What are you
- 2:32talking about? The body of a man was washed up on the beach this
- 2:36morning. Only he didn't die from drowning. It was murder. Yes,
- 2:39there was no identification on the body, not at all except one of your
- 2:45business cards, Nick Carter, Private Detective. I hit the card in my
- 2:49pocket as soon as I laid dice on it. But there's a chance one
- 2:52of the reporters saw it before I did. Now do I have to draw
- 2:54you a diagram? You've already done it. I'll be there in a double
- 2:58rally. Bye. What's up, plenty, Look, Patsy, hold on
- 3:00the office until you here for me. I'll call it within an hour.
- 3:02I knew you shouldn't have answered that song. Business before, pleasure, Patsy.
- 3:06And right now I've got business at the City Morgue where you got him
- 3:21rally on a slab out here. He's on nice on the bucks at the
- 3:23end of the room here, And I'm telling you one thing, you cut,
- 3:27It's lucky for you that I was here when he was brought here.
- 3:30Oh look, Riley, Shirley, you aren't trying to pull me into this
- 3:31thing just because the fellow was carrying one of my carts. Probably hundreds of
- 3:35people I never heard of were carrying my name in the vest party. If
- 3:37you'd rather be explaining to the captain how your car got on the carts?
- 3:39Oh and I'll take it easy, Riley. Oh no, what it means
- 3:43for an officer with a larger conceal evidence? Nick, how do I know
- 3:46one of those reportters a photographers isn't telling them the captain? Right now,
- 3:49let's worry about one thing at a time. He said. The body was
- 3:52washed up on the beach on the north shore of Long Island, as it
- 3:54was its tough Tenor Gunnis heck, with every bit of identification removed. Everything
- 3:59was ripped out, accept a concealed pocket. Yes, I know, with
- 4:01my card. Here we are last docs. Here. Take a good look,
- 4:09Nick. Did you ever see him before? Oh, yes, that's
- 4:13Stanley Phillips. Huh. Doctor Stanley Phillips is a research chemist, sort of
- 4:17an eccentric. Oh bomby huh. No, No, that's strange. He's
- 4:21assisted me in a few investigations and for the most part he was pretty much
- 4:25of a hermit. Didn't like to mix with people that don't make sense.
- 4:29People who mind their own business, don't get and go around getting themselves murdered.
- 4:32Where did he live. There's a big house on a long island sound.
- 4:35But his laboratory he was in his yacht, his anchor about half mile
- 4:39or so up in the house, if I remember correctly. Laboratory on a
- 4:42yacht. He was bomby, Hey, Raley, Look here and his neck.
- 4:47What did you expect? I told you he was tangled. The autopsy
- 4:50showed he was dead before he was put into the gunny's hack and thrown into
- 4:54the water. I know, but that isn't what I mean. Yeah,
- 4:57look at the prints in his neck. Closely looking him. Yeah, yeah,
- 5:00well, last I miss my guess. Rally it was murdered by a
- 5:02left handed killer. Say maybe you've got something there, Nick, I'll phone.
- 5:08The fingerprint takes forever. Rather let me at the phone first. I
- 5:11gotta be in my way. Hey, now do if you forget. You
- 5:13can't take long on this, Nick. The captain will be wanting to question
- 5:15you, but your card being found on the body, I can't hold off
- 5:17more than a few hours. Give me those few hours, rally and I'll
- 5:19wrap the murderer up in wax paper. Nicholas Carter's office, Allo, Panthry.
- 5:24We got work to do, yes, Nick, I want you to
- 5:26go through the files, and they got all the stuff we have on doctor
- 5:28Stanley Phillips, that queer dog who did some work for you once. Yeah,
- 5:31that's the one research chemist. Get all the dope and I'm gonna beep
- 5:33you down in front of the office in ten minutes. I'll pick you up,
- 5:35all right, Nick, that's all where you headed for? Nick?
- 5:39The Phillips the state on Long Island. Sound meet me there as soon as
- 5:41you get the report on the finger prints. Stadt Phillip's Nick under parent Linny
- 5:54the He and his sister ever married. After the parents die, they continued
- 5:58to live in the big manor house. What did you say. The sister's
- 6:00name was Rose Phillips, Rose, go on. You know all about his
- 6:04laboratory being on his yacht. It's supposed to be one of the best private
- 6:08laboratories in the country. Used to do a lot of research work for big
- 6:11companies as a laboratory assistant. Tom Marx young man. And let's see what
- 6:16else? And oh, his hobby was writing scientific articles. They were usually
- 6:21about the effects of the habit forming drugs. Get an article in Popular Research
- 6:26last month entitled Morphine Exposed, So he wrote about habit farming drugs. Huh.
- 6:33You know, Patsy, this case might turn out to be more than
- 6:36just an ordinary murder. I guess nobody's home. Nick, You're wrong about
- 6:54pat Petsy saw the curtains at the window moved mhm. Bounding on the door
- 7:02isn't gonna do any good either. Whoever's in there everything he doesn't want callers
- 7:05today. However, what are you going to do? Open the door?
- 7:11This little lock picker of mine? That is all right? Come on,
- 7:18Patsy, there were going in. I don't see anybody. Stay behind me.
- 7:25Put your hands up over your head. She's got a gun. Nick,
- 7:28you're Rose Phillips. I'd take it. Miss keep your hands up.
- 7:30I'm asking the questions. Who are you? I'm Nick Carter, and this
- 7:34is Yes. And this is my assistant, Patsy Bowen. Nick call her
- 7:40the great detective when my brother often speaks. If you even she you'll wonder
- 7:43Nick. She doesn't know yet, Miss Phillips. I'm sorry I have to
- 7:46tell you like this, but your brother is dead. He dead, Yes,
- 7:55I'm afraid he was murdered, sadly murder. Now, if you'll just
- 8:01put that gun away, miss Phillops, we'll talk things over. Good mister
- 8:05car I'm sorry this is all such a shock. It was a fiendish killing,
- 8:09and I'm going to do all I can to bring the criminal to justice.
- 8:13You may be sure of that. A Rose Rose, I'm in here,
- 8:18Richard. Oh well, uh, who are these people? I thought
- 8:24Stanley told you never let strangers in the house. It's all right, Richard.
- 8:26This is Nick Carter, the detective and his assistant. Oh well that's
- 8:31different. How do you do, miss Carter? I am Richard Coles.
- 8:35I take it you've already heard about doctor Phillips. Yes, ghastly, isn't
- 8:39it. I can hardly believe it. The police say it was murder.
- 8:43For the life of me, I can't imagine who would want to murder Stanley.
- 8:46He was a strange man, mister Carter, very strange. He had
- 8:50a phobia about not letting anyone in the house when he was away. You
- 8:54seem to manage an entrance, all right, mister Coles. Well, I'm
- 8:56mister Cole's a very old friend of the family and has always had a cause.
- 9:01He's all lord Nick, this is the one of the window. He's
- 9:03got a gun. I can't get over it. Nick, You don't seem
- 9:18to be surprised that you were shot at back there in the house. I'm
- 9:20not Patsy. That's why I was standing beside that suit of armor that protected
- 9:24me by deflecting the bullets. Nick, your presence on the Phillips case is
- 9:28most annoying to someone too. Bad that window was frosted glass. Couldn't get
- 9:31a look at the gunman that tiny crack the window was open. Well,
- 9:37now did you find what I told you to look for? And the cottage
- 9:39occupied by Tom Marks, the lab assistant, Yes, I found a pair
- 9:41of his gloves. Good. I had to go through all his desk drawers
- 9:43to find him through. Let me see them. All seems to be heading
- 9:48up, almost too neatly, adds up to a pair of gloves. That's
- 9:54all. Look, Patsy Cole's told me back. There's something about the terms
- 9:56of Phillip's will. If you live to be fifty was to go to a
- 10:00foundation. He died before that. Rose was to inherit all the estate.
- 10:03But that makes Rose. Oh no, no, no, no, I
- 10:05don't suspect Rose. Her grief seemed genuine. But there's something else I learned.
- 10:09Tom marks Philip's lab assistance in love with Rose. They even wanted to
- 10:13get married, but Phillips opposed the marriage. Now the field is clear,
- 10:16will loule the money to Booth. But that still doesn't make Tom Marx.
- 10:20Let's see, I'm almost certain Phillips was strangled by a left handed killer.
- 10:24These gloves of marks you brought me show that he's left handed. Oh,
- 10:26and that leads us where right out to the laboratory in the yacht. I've
- 10:31got to find Tom Marx. Nick, Why in the world do you suppose
- 10:43doctor Phillips said his laboratory way out here in the middle of the sound there's
- 10:46no mystery to that one. Patsy tell me why once? Well? Why
- 10:50so people couldn't bother him? I'd have used his technical knowledge a lot more
- 10:54often on cases myself had been more accessible. Hell, here we are,
- 11:00this is the Phillips yot. I'll tie up here. Never climbed up a
- 11:03rope ladder before, and you're not going up now either, not until I
- 11:05look around the boat myself. Oh, Nick, am I helping you on
- 11:09this case or not? You are that? I don't want you taking unnecessary
- 11:13chances. Nick, Please quite a minut aventure. Let's see if we can
- 11:16raise somebody from here. Hello there, Hello, aboard the Phillips yacht.
- 11:26It's funny. Tom Marx is the board. He's keeping quiet about it.
- 11:28I will find out right now. You better stay here in the motor boat
- 11:31and let you solve this case alone. Not a chance, okay, okay,
- 11:37but stay directly behind they remember, whew, climbing this ro plaid is
- 11:46no sinch. I'm glad I'm not a sailor. Can you make it?
- 11:50I'm coming. What do you think you'll find? Nick? Tom Marx,
- 11:54I hope here. Let me give your hand over the rail, all right?
- 12:00Oh, Hey, well, there's nobody to lay out the welcome rug
- 12:05deck of this voting laboratory. Oh that doesn't mean we're alone, Patsy.
- 12:07Come on, We're going down this companion way. Okay, I'm not mistaken.
- 12:13It leads to Phillips laboratory. Mm hmm, sus the laboratory. All
- 12:22right, Patsy stay behind me. I'm going to open the door and Marx,
- 12:28Tom Marks you in there? All right? Patsy wouldn't go in.
- 12:37Tom Mark seems to have vanished, but he certainly left a mess behind him.
- 12:41Yes, overturned retorts bunsen Burner October. Hm. Look here on the
- 12:48floor, broken ball, so furr acid spilled and eating into the floor.
- 12:52Yes, this is where doctor Stanley Phillips met his death, all right.
- 12:56And when the killer came at him, he was sitting at this writing.
- 13:01Well how do you figure that? And battle of ink tipped over? Wonder
- 13:03if he has any papers here that will tell us what we want to know.
- 13:11M desk been rifled, Everything of any value has already been taken.
- 13:16Still all adds up to Tom Marx, isn't it? Yep? Seems to
- 13:20we'll know for sure as soon as Raleigh gets the report from the fingerprint expert
- 13:24Nick. Nick. Come here, look what I fall in the sink.
- 13:28But this piece of paper I see now that's in doctor Phillips handwriting. Somebody
- 13:33tried to burn it up and they threw it on the drain board of the
- 13:35sink. Here part of it didn't burn. See if I can figure it
- 13:37out, like you to know. The man whom I have trusted and worked
- 13:43with these many years is I have discovered the head of a giant dope peddling
- 13:46ring and using my premises to carry on his business. This man is a
- 13:52light to go off. Patsy, Betsy, where are you? Patsy?
- 14:07You all right? Petsy? My head? Somebody hit me? Say where
- 14:11you are? I find the switch? You have your flash flat? Yeah,
- 14:15I'll find the switch in just a second. Oh, the lights won't
- 14:18work. It must have been turned off with the master switch in the hand
- 14:20room. And that means there's more than one person on this boat besides us.
- 14:24One of them turned off the lights and the other one shot at us
- 14:24in here. You were right when you said you felt everything wasn't okay on
- 14:28this yat You're able to get up, Patsy? Oh sure, I'm all
- 14:31right now, just a big hen's egg on my head, That's all.
- 14:35Okay? Come on, Nick, did they take the note? That's what
- 14:39I want to find out. Let's see flash light down in the sink.
- 14:43Yeah it's gone, But wait, what are you going to do? Clean
- 14:48up the sink? A little? Ashes don't look well scattered around on a
- 14:50white sink. Carefully now any way? Are now? We're ready? Ready
- 15:00for what? To search? This yacht from stem to stern? What in
- 15:15places has been keeping you? Nick? I've been cooling my heels in this
- 15:18dock for the past half hour. Here I hoped you'd be here. You
- 15:22say, you look as if you'd seen a ghost on that yacht? And
- 15:24I did? Somebody cut the shout outs in the dark? Pat's I got
- 15:26knocked down? The track doesn't get a nasty bumping ray? Who did it?
- 15:30Nick? Whoever it was made a nat getaway? That? And I
- 15:33searched the ship after which the men are in, but didn't find a soul.
- 15:35Did you see anybody coming in from the yacht? Narius hose coming off
- 15:37that boat since I've been here? In fact, the only two people who've
- 15:41been here here was two fishermen are you sure they were fishermen are now,
- 15:46look, you don't be giving me that it was Bunna feid fishermen. All
- 15:48right. They put their little rowboat to short of ways down the beach,
- 15:52and I saw them bring in their catch and a nice thing of fish.
- 15:54It wise, Okay, okay, so they were really verre. What about
- 15:58your report, Lieutenant? Oh oh there, Nick was right now. Her
- 16:00fingerprint expert examined the marks on doctor Phillip's nick and said he was undoubtedly stangled
- 16:06by a left handed killer. And now all we've got to do is find
- 16:10a left handed man who had a reason to murder the doctor. We found
- 16:12him. What's that? Doctor Phillips laboratory assistant Tom marks left handed? Say?
- 16:18You sure worked fast, Nick, And it's a good thing too.
- 16:21The captain found out about your card being found on the body. Hey,
- 16:25what kind of a condon is this? Tom Marx? I don't know.
- 16:27I haven't seen him yet. Wasn't that his courage? And he wasn't in
- 16:30a lab in the yard? And let's make tracks, mister private detective and
- 16:33touched the grounds here. Wait a minute, it's one thing more you want
- 16:37to know? Huh? Whoever killed doctor Stanley Phillips is the head of a
- 16:40giant dope ring. Phillips was killed because he was about to expose the man.
- 16:45Hey, that would be the laboratory assistant. He'd have access to drugs.
- 16:51Who in tarnation is that Richard Coles, both friend of the Phillips and
- 16:53also the lawyer rally and in your pocket? Careful of it speece of evidence
- 16:57I picked up in the boat. Okay, mister Carter, I've been honeying
- 17:02everywhere for you. How much calls? This is Lieutenant Riley. I'm headquartered.
- 17:04Oh, I'm glad you're here. Lieutenant. We are up against the
- 17:07dangerous criminal. I don't worry, mister Coles. The law always gets its
- 17:11man. What do you want to see me about? It's called Rose Phillips.
- 17:15She's gone. How do you know? Come up to the house with
- 17:17me. I'll show you something has happened to her. I'm sure. Hurry.
- 17:33This is Rose's bedroom, Lieutenant. Yeah, somebody was making a fast
- 17:37getaway, all right, Yes, just look at the room. Close trown
- 17:41all over. One of our suitcases has gone, and this suitcase, half
- 17:45packed, was left behind. She and the laboratory assistant must have been in
- 17:48on this together. If she wasn't guilty, she wouldn't have run away.
- 17:52Oh, she must have been out of her mind. Of course Rose was
- 17:56in love with Tom and Nick. Does the matter? What are you frowning
- 18:00at? Rose Phillips didn't run away? Didn't run away? What are you
- 18:04sayings, No, go run away voluntarily and leave all her makeup behind.
- 18:08Look at that dressing table, nothing's been touched. You're right, Betsy.
- 18:12See do you suppose Oh no, no, what is it? Mister Coles?
- 18:18Do you suppose that Tom could have forced her to leave? Can be?
- 18:22Can be kidnapping? Well, he won't get away with it. I'll
- 18:26call headquarters and have a cordon thrown around this entire district. We'll catch Tom
- 18:30Marks before he gets to the next town. Get out of here, Riley,
- 18:33do that well, mister Coles, Yes, mis Carter, I guess
- 18:36Lieutenant Riley has this case alsowed up. His men will have Tom Marks and
- 18:40Rose Phillips within they are well, mister Carter. It was nice of you
- 18:44to take such an interest in my friend's death. Would you care for a
- 18:47cigarette? Oh? No, thanks? Uh you Lieutenant? Wait? Sure,
- 18:52sure I don't mind if I do? Course? Uh yeah. Thanks.
- 18:56Thanks. Also, I'm block, Patsy. Where's the telephone? There's
- 19:03one right over here on the table. Yeah, Patsy, we got what
- 19:06to do. I thought you said the case was finished, not by a
- 19:08long shot. I said that for their benefit. You and I are going
- 19:11over this estate for the fine tooth comb. I'm not satisfied yet. You
- 19:34say anything, need come on in, shut the door. Do you think
- 19:42anyone saw us headed for this boat house? I hope not. Oh,
- 19:47be carefully, don't step off in the water. Nick, there's a small
- 19:51speedboat in the water. Would you think they put it in dry docks so
- 19:53late in the season? Depends, Patsy. Look up there, mounted in
- 19:57the bow a machine gun. Mmm, this boat was used for business?
- 20:03Gee? Who'd ever think of quiet little chemist like doctor Phillips kept a mounted
- 20:08machine gun on a speedboat. I believe this set up down here was news
- 20:11to doctor Phillips. Tool hold on my arm. We look around, Oh,
- 20:15Nick, don't step on the fish string of fish? Well, Nick,
- 20:22those fishermen Riley Song must have come in here, Betsy. His catch
- 20:26isn't fresh. What those men used the string of dead fish just to fool
- 20:29Riley? And those were the men who made trouble for us on the yacht.
- 20:32Yea, they must have been plenty of life preservers stacked up in here.
- 20:37Yeah, that's strange. Yeah, Betsy, take the flashlight and play
- 20:41it on this one. Okay, what are you doing taking it to pieces?
- 20:45No, just examining it. Ah, there we have it. What
- 20:53a small waterproof pocket's been sewn in here? Yes, and it extends all
- 20:59the way around inside life preserver. I think, clever? What is it?
- 21:03These secret compartments are filled with dope. About every one of these life
- 21:07preservers are filled with drugs. Nobody would ever think of looking in a life
- 21:10preserver for evidence. I think doctor Phillips did, and that's why he was
- 21:12murdered. Nick you okay, Patsy, I can't stop crying. That's not
- 21:30surprising. Somebody threw a tear gas bomb through the window. That's right,
- 21:36friends, it was who's there? Pretty clever of me using that those of
- 21:41my trade that way, isn't it, mister cutter? But Tom Marks is
- 21:45always clever. So you're Tom Marks? Huh. I've been waiting to set
- 21:48my eyes on you. It's too bad your eyes are filled with tear gas
- 21:52because now you'll never have that pleasure. Okay, Pete, come in and
- 21:56get the lady. I'll take care of mister cut on myself. Come on,
- 22:04let you got those iron weights in the bag, Pete, Sure both
- 22:22of them. This guy will never be washed up on the beach like the
- 22:25duck was. Good. See you're tied a peg, good and tight.
- 22:29You know. I think he's passed out. He ain't moving none. I
- 22:33did a job on him before we put him in the bag. I listened
- 22:37to that game when you it sounds like a hoodo with a cold in the
- 22:41head. Shut up, Okay, Okay, that'll do it. Say caught
- 22:51it right dead? What does it take that you'll let guy choked him like
- 22:55a rat? And he's still talking? All right? All right, speak
- 22:57your piece, mister cutter, because you don't have much longer. You're not
- 23:02gonna get away with us. I doubted, mister Cutter. You're going straight
- 23:07down to Davy Jones. Luck. Okay for this lad of your hand bars
- 23:11but the twenty four hours listen to him. What do you fellas think you're
- 23:15gonna do a patsy bone? He's worrying about its dame, but he's gonna
- 23:18lose his own. Nick, is your whether. I'm warning you. Come
- 23:22on, let's get rid of him. Okay, it's dark enough, now
- 23:26you cut him, all right? I came as soon as I got your
- 23:48flashlight signal from the short Nick, you think the criminals are aboard the yacht
- 23:52here? Now you'll see in a minute, laboratory is right down this companion
- 23:56way you're dipping with from head to Footnick, What happened? I tried to
- 24:00pull the same trick on Nick did they pull on doctor Phillips. Only it
- 24:03didn't work because Nick can expand his neck and wrist muscles. Yes, I
- 24:06had my hands free before I hit the water. There was no crick at
- 24:08all to cut my way out of the sack. And then I clung to
- 24:11the back of their motor boat until it reached the oat. Here I waited
- 24:14for the would be killers to get a board on tied Patsy, and here
- 24:17we are. Are You're lucky, Nick, he's smart. That's all quiet.
- 24:21This is the door. Keep your gun ready, right, Good evening,
- 24:25mister Coles. What oh? Nick Carter? Well, him and miss
- 24:30Carter, these two friends of mine and myself were just discussing whether you had
- 24:33found the criminals. I think we have, mister gold good good. Is
- 24:37that one thing more? I need to make sure I have the criminals,
- 24:41Riley, Yeah, give me that envelope I asked you to keep for me.
- 24:44Oh sure, sure, Nick, here you are. Thanks. Now,
- 24:48I'll just take the piece of burnt paper out of his envelope. Are
- 24:51those the pieces you gathered from the drainboard? Yes, Betsy, they were
- 24:55from the note Stanley Phillip's throat just before he was murdered. And I'll just
- 24:59use some of the these chemicals and the burnt paper. You see, gentlemen,
- 25:03even though this piece of paper has been burned, that is possible by
- 25:06using the correct chemical solution to bring out the writing that was on the paper
- 25:08before it was burned. In this case, I expect the writing will give
- 25:12the name of the man Phillips designated as head of the giant drug ring and
- 25:18his killer. Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. Yes, here it comes. The
- 25:23chemicals are beginning to act, the writing is beginning to show up. Good
- 25:30the name is And I got these tools, hugs, Nick, not much
- 25:40cold. Sorry, I had to plug in the shoulder coals, but I
- 25:41had to put you out of action. Rally, that's your murder. So
- 25:45to his coals, who did it? All right? Color I kill him?
- 25:49The powers be paised, nick, I thought Tom Marks who was the
- 25:52killer? Coals had me food too rally until this afternoon when he came running
- 25:56down from the house, and then I noticed his feet will win as if
- 26:00you'd been in waiting. Then he was one of the men on the yacht,
- 26:03one of the fishermen Raleigh saw right, Betsy and another thing. The
- 26:07man who strangled me in the boat I was claimed to be Tom Marx,
- 26:10but Tom Marx is left handed. The man who tried to strangle me,
- 26:12he used his right hand. And you knew Phillips was murdered by a left
- 26:15handed man. That's right. I knew I was after a left handed murderer.
- 26:18O'Riley, em did you notice that mccole's landed your cigarette for you this
- 26:22afternoon? And Rose's room he used his left hand, she payed cully he
- 26:26did. Then he's left handed too. Right. When I saw him do
- 26:32that, I knew he was a killer, but I had to make him
- 26:33prove it. Well. You did that alright. That business about making the
- 26:37writings tand out on a piece of paper after it's burned is a new one
- 26:40to meeting? Nick? Can you actually do that? Well, it can
- 26:41be done under ideal conditions, but this time I was just putting on an
- 26:45ec for mister Coles's benefit. You mean you didn't actually make any writing appear
- 26:49on the burned paper, not a word, mister Coles, and I fell
- 26:53for it like a sap. Nick, what's that? I'm not sure if
- 26:59Patsy and I have a hunch it's locked, Nick, Oh, Patsy,
- 27:03since wein did a locked door? Ever? Stop? Nick Cartter? Quite
- 27:07right, Riley, when did it? This is no time for it to
- 27:10start. So this one ought to do the trick that we are, Nick
- 27:15Catt, Oh, fank head Rose. This man with you is Tom Marks,
- 27:19Miss Pillips, Yes I am. They were going to kill us,
- 27:22mister Carter. Have they tied us up and threw us in here? We
- 27:25heard them planning to throw us overboard? If you've been imprisoned in here all
- 27:27this time, mister Marx And no, not quite. I got a telephone
- 27:30call last night summoning me into the city to pick up some chemicals doctor Phillips
- 27:33and I needed in an experiment. I was slugged as I stepped out of
- 27:37the car, and when I came too late this afternoon, I was in
- 27:40here and so was Rose. That cause was a smart one, throwing suspicion
- 27:45on you and then trying to get rid of you in order to make it
- 27:47look as if you'd run away. Smart but not smart enough for Nick.
- 27:51Well, Riley, you've got your murderer. I have that, and Rose,
- 27:53you and Tom are safe, Yes, thanks to you. And I
- 27:56guess that's that? Oh no, Nick, you still have to sell my
- 28:00kids? Or what's that? Betcy? That luncheon date you promised me?
- 28:03Oh? Where are you and I going to have lunch at this hour?
- 28:04Why? That's easy fancy? And I was swell place in town, right
- 28:10across from the Boardue. Come on, this was another strange experience. If
- 28:26Nick Carter master detective called the Drug Ring Murderer or Nick Carter and the Mystery
- 28:30of the Left Handed Killer another of the curious adventures of Nick Carter, which
- 28:34are brought to you regularly at the same time by W O R. Mutual
- 28:38And Now, Nick, what can you tell us about next week's story?
- 28:41When a young man who was a very good friend of mine arrived in town
- 28:45to claim his bride. He suddenly became aware that she was not the girl
- 28:48to whom he had become engaged. You mean she wasn't his fiance. That
- 28:51was the question that started off the whole case. Yes, indeed, because
- 28:53we couldn't be sure whether the girlely love was really the gurly love, we
- 28:56prevented two murders and save the gigantic fortune from disappearing. You didn't save me
- 29:00from disappearing me. Oh, quite true, Patsy, But after all,
- 29:03you weren't gone very long before we found you. But I'm sure glad you
- 29:06found me when you did, or I might not be here now. So
- 29:08long, folks, get the rest of the story next week, right,
- 29:11So long, and so long to you Nick and Patsy in a strange adventure
- 29:15you have just heard. Nick Carter was impersonated by Lon Clark, Patsy by
- 29:18Helen Chote. The story was written for Nick Carter by Bart Connery. Original
- 29:22music was played by Lou White the entire production, who was under the direction
- 29:26of Jack McGregor. Next week, at the same time, listen to another
- 29:47curious experience of Nick Carter, entitled The Substitute Pride or Nick Carter for the
- 29:53Mystery of the Ninth Story. This story is a copyrighted feature of Street and
- 30:02Smith Publications, Incorporated. The Return of Nick Carter is produced in the studios
- 30:07of WLR and is broadcast over most of these stations every Wednesday evening at eight
- 30:11thirty Eastern wartime. This is mutual welcome back. Well. I believe this
- 30:36was actually my first first episode of Nick Carter that I actually saw or heard,
- 30:45and it was fun. I think, particularly the adventure element kind of
- 30:51makes this work to me. The prime solution of who done it? While
- 30:57I wasn't sure of all the intricate sees, just the way the actual villain
- 31:07behaved, just the characterization, I think, probably more the acting than anything
- 31:11else, really gave you a sense that this is really probably the villain.
- 31:18Neck brings kind of the pulp feeling to it, which I think is Lilly,
- 31:23you have just a lot going on here, so great adventure, mystery
- 31:29not so much, but in some of the other weeks it's a bit better,
- 31:33all right. Listener comments and feedback. We start out with Debbi,
- 31:38who wrote who writes, thank you for all your hard work. I listened
- 31:45to every episode and I miss hearing them on the weekends. I guess that
- 31:48means I'm hooked. Thank you well. Thanks so much, Debbie. We
- 31:52do have great detectives of old time radio on Saturday hand been having them on
- 32:01Sunday as well for a row weeks though, taking a break from that until
- 32:07we get to about our eleven d episode special. Appreciate you listening and supporting
- 32:12the show. Cheryl comments high. I've been listening to your program since it's
- 32:15inception and love it commentary at all. Love how you pay the programs from
- 32:20beginning to end. I'm especially glad to hear that Philip Marlow is coming up
- 32:24like you. It's my very favorite, I think the best. I wanted
- 32:28to ask if Broadway is my beat is on your lineup? I would love
- 32:30to hear that from start to finish. Another favorite program, though it's not
- 32:35really a detective series, is Rocky Jordan. I owe on all that's available
- 32:39on CD, but would love to hear the beginning series, which I think
- 32:44we're fifteen minutes and took place in Istanbul prior to Cairo. To have access
- 32:49to your early programs, thanks again, love what you do well, Thanks
- 32:52so much, Cheryl. First, an answer to your question regarding Broadway as
- 32:58my beat. I do have it on my list of programs to do.
- 33:02It's going to be a while till we actually get to it. I made
- 33:08a list of the shows with the biggest most programs in circulation. Number one
- 33:16is Yours Tooley Johnny Dollar. Number two is Dragged At. Number three is
- 33:21Boston Blackning. Number four is Let George Do It. Number five on the
- 33:25list is Broadway as My Bait. Words of one hundred and sixty episodes,
- 33:30so it takes about three years to get through, so we have to clear
- 33:34a lot of time on the schedule. Not so many episodes for Rocky Jordan,
- 33:45and I do consider that eligible for the series and I have it on
- 33:49my list. In terms of the early episodes of Rocky Jordan, Rocky Jordan
- 33:54was originally you're right, It was an Istanbul and the title of the series
- 34:00was a man named Jordan, and it was a fifteen minute serial. Like
- 34:06a lot of the fifteen minute serials. It just didn't make it too long.
- 34:09There are two episodes in circulation. However, there are two episodes from
- 34:15two different basically not tying into a complete storyline. So it's not something I
- 34:22could play. It's worth noting though we've been listening to the five part of
- 34:27Yours truly Johnny Dollar serials on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, But Rocky Jordan
- 34:34was actually considered to come back as a five day a week serial that was
- 34:40given a pilot and Jack Moyles, who had left the program and been replaced
- 34:45by George Wrath, actually came back and recorded two pilot episodes for that.
- 34:50And as for Rocky Jordan being a detective series, even though he's not officially
- 34:54a detective works at the Cafe Tambourine, there's still a ton of mysteries.
- 35:01He basically goes out in gum shoes. Many of his plots were actually written
- 35:08by E. Jack Newman, who writes so many Johnny Dollar stories, and
- 35:13he also he also actually rewrote several Jeff Reagan stories for Rocky Jordan. Though
- 35:22it's on my list, it's gonna take a while to get through. There's
- 35:27about eighty ninety episodes, so that's about two years worth of material. But
- 35:34you can go over to big List dot Great Detectives dot net and you can
- 35:40see all the programs we hope to someday air. But those are definitely some
- 35:46bigger, some bigger order shows. So all right, and we have a
- 35:52question from Twitter, this one coming from Let's let's see here, coming from
- 36:01Tom. Have we ever been told what I A and I A Moto stands
- 36:06for? Well, thanks so much for the question, Tom. In answer
- 36:09to the question, John Mark One, who wrote the Mister Moto books,
- 36:15originated the character with the name I A. Moto. When it went to
- 36:20Hollywood, he was given the name. I believe it was a Kiote Moto,
- 36:25an actual name, so no tie into I A. But back for
- 36:31the radio show, back to I A and I find no record of what
- 36:37it stands for, and I don't think it was something that he developed that
- 36:44for. If somebody has read all the books and knows what I A stands
- 36:49for, let me know. But as far as I know, no,
- 36:54we don't know what I A stands for. Finally, I have a comment
- 36:58from pastor Lisa Martin. I love Mister Moto and the opportunity to tune into
- 37:02several archives over the weekend and really enjoyed them since I discovered your podcast during
- 37:07the last few airings of the series. I also saw Mister Moto on TV
- 37:12with Peter Laurie when I was a Child a few times and loved it.
- 37:15I was not aware that this was also a radio series. Thank you so
- 37:17much. Keep up the great work. Well, thanks so much, Pastor
- 37:23Lisa, and I think that Mister Moto is definitely underrated. And the film
- 37:31series I found all about the first the last one to be really just fantastically
- 37:37made movies. And probably a lot of these vintage detective series, so many
- 37:45of are not considered, are not considered or known by younger fans. But
- 37:54they really did have. Hollywood in those days had a way to make so
- 38:00many great series, whether it was Mister Moto or I've been listening to watching
- 38:09the Michael Shane series, the Basil Rathbone, Sherlock Holmes series. This was
- 38:15some great talent, a lot of fun, twist, adventure excitement, not
- 38:21quite at the freendicks pace we get today. So I'm glad you enjoyed the
- 38:24radio series, and I hope a lot of people are able to enjoy Mister
- 38:30Moto in the archives. All right, Well, that will do it for
- 38:32today. We will be back tomorrow. We are wrapping up the Jolly Roger
- 38:38fraud matter, and then we'll also have an episode of Doctor Tim Detective and
- 38:44then join us back here next Thursday, when we continue on with Nick Carter.
