- 0:51Speaker 1: come up here, Dougie, come around, come around you thinking
- 0:55Speaker 1: about it? He's very thoughtful, Douggie comet. He only does
- 0:58Speaker 1: what he wants to do.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I love like on camera he just looks like a
- 1:01Speaker 3: void moving through the rook.
- 1:03Speaker 1: There he is that's my baby, who's my beautiful baby.
- 1:11Speaker 4: He did get black again, like I know you had
- 1:13Speaker 4: said it. He turned brown and now he's I feel
- 1:17Speaker 4: that he's black again.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Down yeah, good, down, good boy.
- 1:23Speaker 4: And Weddy, lets you snuggle him, even though he doesn't
- 1:25Speaker 4: snuggle at night.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I know. But he's getting better. He understands that there's
- 1:30Speaker 1: a price to pay if he doesn't give me what
- 1:32Speaker 1: I want.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Chelsea, let's talk about books.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Okay, I've read a few, a bunch of books lately.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I have some good book recommendations.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Okay, do you want to start? Do you want to sure?
- 1:42Speaker 1: Sure? Yeah?
- 1:42Speaker 3: Yeah, Okay.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Well, one that I have been reading that I just
- 1:46Speaker 4: read recently that I super duper loved.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I realized, like the three that I.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Thought to talk about today are all set deep in
- 1:53Speaker 4: the woods. This first one I think that you would
- 1:55Speaker 4: actually really really love.
- 1:57Speaker 3: It's fiction.
- 1:58Speaker 4: There's like a tiny bit of magical realism in it,
- 2:01Speaker 4: but not a.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Ton, not not a ton.
- 2:04Speaker 3: But it is called in there, it's called north Woods.
- 2:08Speaker 4: It's by Daniel Mason, and it's all set in New
- 2:11Speaker 4: England at this house that's built like sort of maybe
- 2:15Speaker 4: in the seventeen hundreds and it's the history of this
- 2:17Speaker 4: house and all the different people who live there throughout
- 2:20Speaker 4: the like decades and generations. It's really cool. I really
- 2:25Speaker 4: really loved it. It's beautifully written. It kind of like
- 2:28Speaker 4: moves along pretty quickly. I really liked it.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Okay, do you have.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Fitness and wellness questions? Well, Chelsea's personal trainer Ben Bruno
- 2:36Speaker 4: is about to guest on an episode, So right into
- 2:38Speaker 4: Dear Chelsea podcast at gmail dot com with all your
- 2:40Speaker 4: fitness and wellness questions.
- 2:46Speaker 1: What else?
- 2:47Speaker 4: You got a couple other ones that I really loved.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I just finished one called The Cold Vanish.
- 2:51Speaker 3: It's by Yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 1: These a sound like they take place in the.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Ely they're all in the woods.
- 2:56Speaker 4: I think I need to like go be in the woods,
- 2:58Speaker 4: like I think I'm finding, like think I need to
- 3:00Speaker 4: be I need to go maybe not camping.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I need to go to like a beautiful place.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah. It's on a lake maybe Yeah yeah, yeah, I
- 3:06Speaker 1: think with lots of trails. Yes, then you can see
- 3:09Speaker 1: the before they see you.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Yeah. This is called The Cold Vanish. It's by John Billman.
- 3:15Speaker 4: And this if, like anybody likes true crime, it's perfect
- 3:18Speaker 4: for that because it's a journalist who has written a
- 3:21Speaker 4: ton of stuff for Outside magazine, and he follows like
- 3:23Speaker 4: a bunch of these cases of missing persons in America's
- 3:27Speaker 4: national parks, and he specifically works with some of the
- 3:30Speaker 4: families to try and like find their loved ones.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Or like as they search.
- 3:33Speaker 4: And it's just really beautiful storytelling all true stories.
- 3:37Speaker 3: And I really liked that.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And then is it descriptive?
- 3:42Speaker 4: Yes, That's what surprised me the most is I expected
- 3:45Speaker 4: it to be a little bit drier, but it's very
- 3:49Speaker 4: The writing is very evocative. It's it's beautiful writing, and
- 3:52Speaker 4: it's interesting writing. And his turns of phrase are always
- 3:55Speaker 4: kind of surprising, and I really like when a writer
- 3:57Speaker 4: does that.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:59Speaker 4: And then the third one that I have to recommend
- 4:02Speaker 4: is called The Stranger.
- 4:03Speaker 3: In the Woods, God We're just in the woods.
- 4:06Speaker 4: It's called this The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit,
- 4:10Speaker 4: and it's by Michael Finkel. I listened to this one
- 4:12Speaker 4: in the book on tape, which I would recommend.
- 4:14Speaker 3: We call that.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Audiobooks now, but I would recommend it because the person
- 4:19Speaker 4: in question, the hermit in question, does have this sort
- 4:20Speaker 4: of manor accent, and it's nonfiction, so It's all about
- 4:24Speaker 4: this guy who just like in the eighties, like wandered
- 4:27Speaker 4: off into the woods and then just lived there for
- 4:30Speaker 4: like twenty five years and would go into people's cabins
- 4:34Speaker 4: in the wintertime like take stuff, but like not too much,
- 4:37Speaker 4: and he was always very respectful. But he was like
- 4:39Speaker 4: like they knew there was a hermit out there who
- 4:42Speaker 4: was just like the man in the woods.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And so eventually things come.
- 4:46Speaker 1: To let people go and live in the woods, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: that's either me, how does it? And then what happens
- 4:50Speaker 1: the next day? What are they eating branches?
- 4:52Speaker 2: Like?
- 4:52Speaker 1: What are they killing rabbits? Like?
- 4:54Speaker 4: What are He like learned how to exist in the
- 4:57Speaker 4: woods in such a secretive way that he could like
- 4:59Speaker 4: not leave footprints. He was basically like really close to
- 5:03Speaker 4: all these different houses and cabins and stuff, but like
- 5:05Speaker 4: no one really knew where he was. No one ever
- 5:07Speaker 4: found his camp. He never talked to anybody. So he
- 5:11Speaker 4: was like a person who really truly just wanted.
- 5:13Speaker 1: To be alone, to be alone in the woods. Yeah,
- 5:15Speaker 1: the exact opposite. Yeah, I like the alone part, but
- 5:17Speaker 1: not the woods part. Right, I don't want to be
- 5:20Speaker 1: alone in the woods. I actually want a.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Guide, a Guide out of the Woods.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Okay, I just read. I've read three books. I read well.
- 5:28Speaker 1: The first one is called The Correspondent, which has been
- 5:31Speaker 1: going around. Yes, that's the one Jane Fonda signed on
- 5:34Speaker 1: to do. It's written by Virginia Evans, and that is
- 5:38Speaker 1: a real page. Have you read that yet?
- 5:40Speaker 4: No?
- 5:40Speaker 3: I haven't. Okay, she's writing letters.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a pistolary. Actually, that's the style of writing,
- 5:45Speaker 1: which is letter writing.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I learned that because I saw Mindy Kaling on a
- 5:48Speaker 1: podcast talking about it on a clip on Instagram and
- 5:52Speaker 1: she was saying her favorite They said, what's your favorite
- 5:54Speaker 1: type of writing? And she wrote a pistolary. That's when
- 5:56Speaker 1: they write letters. I had no idea what that word meant.
- 5:58Speaker 1: So I was like, wow, like that. You know how
- 6:00Speaker 1: I love learning words. So epistolaria, Yes, so that This
- 6:04Speaker 1: book is all about this woman and her letters to
- 6:06Speaker 1: people and their letters back to her family members, love interests, children,
- 6:11Speaker 1: family friends. And she's an older woman and she's got
- 6:14Speaker 1: a lot of kutzpah, and she's got a lot of opinions,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and she's she's got her nose in a lot of
- 6:18Speaker 1: people's business. I like it so I like that she's
- 6:21Speaker 1: very much an interloper. Okay, so I identify is.
- 6:24Speaker 3: It modern day? Is that modern day?
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yes? It is? Oh, that's contemporary. And then this book
- 6:29Speaker 1: my friend Juliana, she sends me all my books, Juliana
- 6:32Speaker 1: Marguley's Life and Death and Giants by Ron Rindo. So
- 6:35Speaker 1: this is a novel, this takes place. I don't want
- 6:38Speaker 1: to give anything away, but this book is. This is
- 6:40Speaker 1: what I love about books is I want to be
- 6:43Speaker 1: introduced to things I know nothing about. And I don't
- 6:46Speaker 1: want to only read things that are of interest to me.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I like to read things that have nothing to do
- 6:51Speaker 1: with me or nothing to do with any of my interests.
- 6:54Speaker 1: This book has nothing to do with There's Amish people,
- 6:59Speaker 1: there's farm life. There's a giant okay in the book.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Oh wait, is this kind of about the giant that
- 7:07Speaker 4: they found in that field? The quote unquote giant, I
- 7:10Speaker 4: forget what it's called.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And he was a wrestler he became it's like loosely
- 7:14Speaker 1: based on a true story about this kid who sprang
- 7:17Speaker 1: to become a giant and became a wrestler, like he
- 7:22Speaker 1: was a professional wrestler. Anyway, he lives this crazy life
- 7:26Speaker 1: because of his size and because of his strength, and
- 7:28Speaker 1: because of his power and his physical strength and his power,
- 7:32Speaker 1: and so he just ends up living this kind of
- 7:36Speaker 1: crazy life. But he was born to this amish mother.
- 7:40Speaker 1: And then it's it's just like a world that I
- 7:44Speaker 1: would never delve into. So in complete honesty, I it's
- 7:49Speaker 1: not a book that I was like, oh my god,
- 7:51Speaker 1: I've got to rip the pages open. But like the correspondent,
- 7:55Speaker 1: I was like, I tore through that in three days.
- 7:57Speaker 1: This took me a little bit longer. But I do
- 7:59Speaker 1: really appreciate she ate being exposed to the things in
- 8:03Speaker 1: life that I'm not that interested in.
- 8:05Speaker 3: You like naturally.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And now this next book is called Kin by Tyri Jones.
- 8:14Speaker 1: This is one of Oprah's book clubs. Oprah has the
- 8:17Speaker 1: best books. She has always mary the best grades because
- 8:19Speaker 1: they're deep, they're meaningful. And this is about two young
- 8:21Speaker 1: girls who grew up in Louisiana. They both are motherless
- 8:25Speaker 1: and they kind of go off in different directions. The
- 8:27Speaker 1: one goes to college in Atlanta at Spellman and this
- 8:30Speaker 1: other girl goes on and lives in Mississippi for a while.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Then she moves to Tennessee anyway, these two girls just
- 8:36Speaker 1: kind of diverge and then their lives kind of come
- 8:39Speaker 1: back together, and you see the different shapes their lives
- 8:41Speaker 1: have taken. This took a while for me to get into.
- 8:45Speaker 1: It took me about like one hundred pages and then
- 8:47Speaker 1: I was in. And there are some turns of phrase
- 8:50Speaker 1: in here that I mean, there's a chapter in here
- 8:51Speaker 1: that had me hysterically crying. When I went to bed
- 8:54Speaker 1: the other night, I just was bawling. It was so
- 8:56Speaker 1: beautifully written, and it's so profound and me and just
- 9:02Speaker 1: this relationship and this girl's bond that they had because
- 9:06Speaker 1: they were cradle sisters they call it, well they really were.
- 9:09Speaker 1: They like you know, they were in the crib together,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and just their bond and like the bond between women
- 9:16Speaker 1: that go through life together and then kind of keep
- 9:19Speaker 1: showing up for each other at all of the different
- 9:22Speaker 1: turns that you can show up for each other was
- 9:25Speaker 1: really moving. And their dedication and devotion to each other
- 9:28Speaker 1: was really moving and powerful. And the writing is beautiful there.
- 9:31Speaker 1: So I mean I wrote down I underlined a bunch
- 9:33Speaker 1: in the book because there was just such beautiful writing.
- 9:35Speaker 1: But of course I didn't earmark any of the pages,
- 9:37Speaker 1: so I'd have to go through it, but it's definitely
- 9:39Speaker 1: worth reading. It's called Kin and Something. That's one of
- 9:42Speaker 1: Oprah's books. Yeah, So those are three books I've read
- 9:44Speaker 1: in the last couple of weeks.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Awesome, excellent.
- 9:48Speaker 1: The word of the week is evocative evocative.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Adjective intending to bring out an especially emotional response. Chelsea
