Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Well, This Was Unexpected
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey, hurdlers, it's Emily popping in with five minute Friday.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I've thought about renaming this episode because it's never actually
- 0:28Speaker 1: only five minutes, but I mean, it rolls off the tongue.
- 0:32Speaker 1: It doesn't seem to be a sticking point for any
- 0:34Speaker 1: of you, so I think we just roll with it. Also,
- 0:38Speaker 1: I just need to say this. There's like a cute
- 0:40Speaker 1: older gentleman that lives like on the same floor as
- 0:44Speaker 1: me across the street, and usually on Thursdays, definitely on Fridays,
- 0:51Speaker 1: at four o'clock, he starts jamming out to music on
- 0:56Speaker 1: his balcony like loud enough for literally the entire blo
- 1:00Speaker 1: to hear it. And I don't want to be the
- 1:03Speaker 1: cynical person that says this can be a little bit distracting.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I still have some stuff to get done. But I
- 1:12Speaker 1: am definitely that person right now. Am I horrible?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Anyway? This week, I'm talking to you about a thought
- 1:20Speaker 2: I had this morning.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I was digging through my laundry, as one does when
- 1:27Speaker 1: they're trying to find a certain pair of shorts that
- 1:29Speaker 1: they swore were in their dresser and they're not there.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I wasn't digging through the laundry because I was going
- 1:35Speaker 1: to wear the shorts if they were in the laundry.
- 1:37Speaker 1: But part of me kind of thought that I may
- 1:40Speaker 1: have dropped said shorts when I was doing my actual
- 1:44Speaker 1: laundry the other day, so the anxious person inside of
- 1:47Speaker 1: me wanted to find the shorts. Anyway, I'm digging through
- 1:49Speaker 1: the laundry it's like six am, and I can't find them,
- 1:54Speaker 1: and so I decide that I'm going to wear my
- 1:56Speaker 1: second favorite pair of shorts, and I put them on,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and I'm like hustling and bustling around my apartment trying
- 2:02Speaker 1: to get myself together before I want to be out
- 2:05Speaker 1: of the apartment within like the next ten minutes. And
- 2:08Speaker 1: as I take a quick second to pause and drink
- 2:11Speaker 1: my small espresso cup, I have this moment where I
- 2:15Speaker 1: realized that it is almost the end of October and
- 2:19Speaker 1: I am still wearing shorts, and not just that I'm
- 2:23Speaker 1: like wearing shorts that like I'm preferred to wear shorts,
- 2:27Speaker 1: And my thoughts kept going, as I will explain to
- 2:30Speaker 1: you that I started to wonder, like, when did you
- 2:33Speaker 1: become this person that wanted to wear shorts all the time?
- 2:38Speaker 2: Like that has never been me. I have never.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Until you know twenty twenty the kind of person that
- 2:46Speaker 1: felt comfortable wearing shorts often. I certainly wasn't reaching for
- 2:50Speaker 1: them in October. Nevertheless, I was still not really reaching
- 2:55Speaker 1: for them all that often in the summer months. And
- 2:58Speaker 1: when I reflect on this, I start to wonder or
- 3:02Speaker 1: ask myself, like, what has changed? And I've come to
- 3:06Speaker 1: realize that two things have really changed, if I'm being honest.
- 3:10Speaker 1: The first is that although I had found shorts in
- 3:14Speaker 1: years past that I liked, I feel like I finally
- 3:17Speaker 1: hit the nail on the head when it comes to
- 3:19Speaker 1: the few Goldilocks options that I have in my rotation,
- 3:23Speaker 1: and I'll put links to all of those in the
- 3:25Speaker 1: show notes. Which is funny because I thought that I
- 3:28Speaker 1: had some good shorts before and I would wear them
- 3:32Speaker 1: and pair it with like bodyguide or Megababe thigh chafe
- 3:36Speaker 1: or whatever. But still, like, I never felt one hundred
- 3:40Speaker 1: percent comfortable, always worrying that I was going to get
- 3:43Speaker 1: like ridiculously uncomfortable chafing. And if I could prevent this
- 3:48Speaker 1: from happening, then why wouldn't I want to do that
- 3:50Speaker 1: by wearing Capriz. Well, spoiler alert, wearing Capriz can be
- 3:54Speaker 1: pretty uncomfortable, especially if it is hot outside. And I
- 3:57Speaker 1: have always felt this way, whether I Emily circa two
- 4:01Speaker 1: thousand and seven that was tipping the scalet over two
- 4:03Speaker 1: hundred pounds or the Emily now, I just have always
- 4:07Speaker 1: had what I love to refer to as these thunder
- 4:11Speaker 1: thighs that just didn't ever really make me feel super
- 4:15Speaker 1: comfortable when it came to working out.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I digress.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I think the biggest difference now though, and why I
- 4:21Speaker 1: am wearing shorts, and something that I'm thinking many of
- 4:25Speaker 1: you will be able to relate to, is that I
- 4:27Speaker 1: just got to a point where I wanted to feel
- 4:30Speaker 1: comfortable and I stopped worrying so much about what someone
- 4:33Speaker 1: else might think about me wearing shorts. And in this realization,
- 4:38Speaker 1: I also kind of came to terms with this idea
- 4:40Speaker 1: that maybe this was all in my head, that maybe
- 4:44Speaker 1: no one else actually had a thought or an opinion
- 4:48Speaker 1: of me wearing shorts at all, and the story that
- 4:51Speaker 1: I was telling myself was really just based in the
- 4:56Speaker 1: old Emily, in the Emily that wasn't comfortable in her body.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Not to say that I still don't have days where
- 5:03Speaker 1: I struggle with my personal body acceptance but now I
- 5:08Speaker 1: know how good it feels to feel comfortable on my
- 5:11Speaker 1: run because I am cool. I know how great it
- 5:15Speaker 1: is to feel confident when I'm running down the street,
- 5:18Speaker 1: thinking about my pace and how great that is, and
- 5:22Speaker 1: not worrying about what people might think about the way
- 5:25Speaker 1: that I look. And so I just had this little realization,
- 5:30Speaker 1: you know, this morning, thinking to myself how great it
- 5:34Speaker 1: is and how far I've come, and how I'm sure
- 5:38Speaker 1: that this is certainly something that many of you can
- 5:42Speaker 1: relate to, regardless of your size or your body shape,
- 5:46Speaker 1: that we all at times struggle to feel confident and
- 5:50Speaker 1: comfortable in our own skin. And you know, lately I'm
- 5:54Speaker 1: feeling really positive about it. My prompt for you this week.
- 5:59Speaker 1: So the story I was telling myself, as I just referenced,
- 6:01Speaker 1: was that other people must have felt some kind of
- 6:04Speaker 1: way about me wearing shorts, And really, I believe that
- 6:06Speaker 1: that is just a story. So what story have you
- 6:11Speaker 1: been telling yourself that might not be all that true?
- 6:15Speaker 2: Again?
- 6:15Speaker 1: What story have you been telling yourself that might not
- 6:20Speaker 1: be all that true? Highlights of the week. All the
- 6:25Speaker 1: links of this stuff will be in the show notes.
- 6:28Speaker 1: First up, read how to wash sneakers in the washing
- 6:32Speaker 1: machine and by hand. I get so many DMS about this,
- 6:35Speaker 1: especially I need to note this. When I wear white
- 6:39Speaker 1: sneakers and lace them up on social media, nine times
- 6:42Speaker 1: out of ten in real life, those white sneakers do
- 6:45Speaker 1: not look as white as they just magically appear to
- 6:48Speaker 1: be on social I digress. Still, it is something that
- 6:53Speaker 1: I do. I do clean my sneakers from time to time.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And Woman's Health has this awesome article that gives you
- 6:59Speaker 1: all the tips you need to wash yours on your
- 7:01Speaker 1: own hot tip quick takeaway, never ever, ever, ever put.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Them in the dryer.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Another read for you an article about a man that
- 7:12Speaker 1: is ordering ice cream. I kid you, not at every
- 7:15Speaker 1: US McDonald's to see which machines are broken. This makes
- 7:20Speaker 1: me laugh. This makes me laugh so much because when
- 7:23Speaker 1: I was going through like the summer where I was
- 7:26Speaker 1: learning to love running and I was working really hard
- 7:29Speaker 1: to eat better, the McDonald's dollar cone, which is actually
- 7:34Speaker 1: like no longer a dollar at any McDonald's you go to,
- 7:37Speaker 1: but the dollar cone was my favorite snack. I loved it.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I still love it. I know that it's not the
- 7:44Speaker 1: best thing for me, but it is delicious and refreshing,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and so it cracks me up because this man totally
- 7:51Speaker 1: is onto something and that these machines are often broken
- 7:54Speaker 1: and the public deserves to know where they can get
- 7:57Speaker 1: their cones from. Listen Get Shit Done. Seven habits to
- 8:03Speaker 1: increase productivity. It's a theme that we're talking about a
- 8:06Speaker 1: lot on the show lately, and here in the newsletter
- 8:08Speaker 1: is feeling stuck, feeling unproductive, feeling like you could be
- 8:12Speaker 1: doing better. And I thought this twenty minute listen from
- 8:15Speaker 1: the Mindset Mentor was really really helpful in kind of
- 8:19Speaker 1: aiding me to get out of my own way. Worth
- 8:23Speaker 1: checking out. If you are a Whoop user, Woop has
- 8:25Speaker 1: a new dashboard that I think is super helpful. It
- 8:28Speaker 1: allowed me to be able to locate other groups that
- 8:32Speaker 1: I wanted to be a part of and kind of
- 8:34Speaker 1: gamify the whole concept of strain and sleep and recovery,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and I ten out of ten would recommend it. If
- 8:40Speaker 1: you are a Whooper, I definitely want you to join
- 8:44Speaker 1: the Hurdler's Group. I'll make sure to put that group
- 8:46Speaker 1: code in the show notes. And if you want to
- 8:49Speaker 1: be a Whoop user, you can get thirty dollars off
- 8:52Speaker 1: your subscription just by heading to join dot whoop dot
- 8:55Speaker 1: com slash emily a Body Again. That's join dot whoop
- 9:00Speaker 1: slash Emilia Body to get thirty dollars off your subscription
- 9:05Speaker 1: right now, and last, but not least, this week, I
- 9:08Speaker 1: would love, love, love so much if you would consider
- 9:11Speaker 1: donating to support my virtual NYC marathon. I am running
- 9:16Speaker 1: twenty six point two next Saturday, October thirty. First, I
- 9:20Speaker 1: can't believe, as someone who swore that she would never
- 9:23Speaker 1: do a virtual race, that a virtual marathon is in
- 9:27Speaker 1: my immediate future.
- 9:28Speaker 2: But here we are. I feel like many of you
- 9:31Speaker 2: aren't actually surprised at all.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I am raising money for an organization back on my feet.
- 9:38Speaker 1: They are trying to combat homelessness through the power of
- 9:43Speaker 1: running and community building. It's an organization that I volunteered
- 9:47Speaker 1: with here in New York City before, and it would
- 9:49Speaker 1: mean the world to me if you just could spare
- 9:51Speaker 1: a few dollars to support. I know that you know
- 9:55Speaker 1: regular marathons have their fair share of challenges, and that
- 9:57Speaker 1: virtual marathons certainly have them as well.
- 10:01Speaker 2: So when my motivation might be waning just a little bit.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Come next Saturday, I will think about all of you
- 10:09Speaker 1: and your support and it'll keep me going. So thank
- 10:12Speaker 1: you so much for even considering it, and I also
- 10:15Speaker 1: will be more than happy to accept all of your
- 10:18Speaker 1: well wishes via the DM. Of course, I'm always available
- 10:22Speaker 1: for you over at Hurdle Podcasts and over at Emily
- 10:26Speaker 1: a Body. Last little bit of housekeeping for this week.
- 10:29Speaker 1: If you have yet to rate and review Hurdle, this
- 10:32Speaker 1: is it. It would mean the world to me if
- 10:35Speaker 1: you would just quickly write this very second, head on
- 10:38Speaker 1: into the iTunes store, leave a rating, leave a review.
- 10:42Speaker 2: That's it.
- 10:42Speaker 1: It's simple, tell me what you like and then share
- 10:46Speaker 1: your favorite episode with your friends and family. Another Hurdle conquered.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Catch you guys, next time you
