- 0:05Good afternoon. I was planning to go into Mark
- 0:09today with you, but will be change of plans just for this
- 0:13special occasion. I really just want to speak from
- 0:16my heart. I just want to speak to you from
- 0:19the word of God. Not my own ideas, or my own
- 0:21experiences, of course, from the word of God.
- 0:24But something that's been placed on my heart just through prayer
- 0:28that I hope will bless you and encourage you as you pick
- 0:33yourself up and Advance into this new year, And so this is
- 0:40not going to be a structured sermon for say.
- 0:42There's not going to be three points or five points.
- 0:45It's just going to be one. Thought that I pray will be
- 0:47driven into your soul and Infuse a strength into your being, that
- 0:52will be able to help you and carry you.
- 0:55Not just for this year but I pray for the rest of your life.
- 0:57I pray that this word will have such an impact on you and so I
- 1:01want us to pray and ask the Lord for help.
- 1:03I don't know how long this will be.
- 1:04It can be anything from 20 minutes to an hour and 20
- 1:06minutes. I don't know.
- 1:07But I just want to trust the Lord to leadership and ask you
- 1:10to join me in faith to ask the Lord to lead us, exactly how he
- 1:13would to benefit us in our sanctification.
- 1:16Would you join me as we pray? Louis, thank you.
- 1:25That your word has been made available to us.
- 1:29And that it is your voice, the living voice of God.
- 1:36And Lord in this moment. You know what, we need more than
- 1:41what we know. And we're we just humble
- 1:44ourselves in your presence. And we express our hunger for
- 1:50righteousness. We want to be righteous.
- 1:55We want to know about your righteousness.
- 1:59Rescue us from our slumber. Rescue us, Lord from our sin.
- 2:08Deliver Us Lord from our apathy. Anything that would hinder us
- 2:14from doing exactly what we heard from first Thessalonians 4 and
- 2:18that is to go higher in you. To do so more and more.
- 2:25And so Lord we just ask that you would have mercy on this vessel.
- 2:31And have mercy on all the vessels who are here ready to be
- 2:34filled. We give you thanks in advance
- 2:38for your goodness. In Jesus name, we pray, amen.
- 2:42Amen. Meet me briefly and Philippians
- 2:45chapter 3. Philippians 3, verse 13.
- 2:57This is just a launching pad for a time together today.
- 3:01So, in well-known scripture, the scripture is probably one of the
- 3:05most popular ones when it comes to this time of the year.
- 3:09But I just want to pull out one. Thought for you.
- 3:10Before we continue, here's Paul in Philippians 3:13 speaking to
- 3:15the church. A Philippine he writes Brothers.
- 3:18I do not consider. That I have made it my own but
- 3:22one thing I do one thing I do forgetting what lies behind and
- 3:29straining forward to what lies ahead.
- 3:33I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of
- 3:39God in Christ Jesus verse 15. Let those of us who are mature
- 3:49think this way And if anything you think otherwise God will
- 3:55reveal that also to you only let us hold true to what we have
- 4:00attained. So much can be said of these
- 4:04verses but the one thing I want to underscore is that Paul
- 4:07through these instructions is revealing what spiritual
- 4:09maturity really is. What spiritual maturity looks
- 4:15like and includes many things. Yes, persistence pressing on
- 4:20believing God moving forward, but I love what he says early
- 4:24on. He says one thing that I do
- 4:27forgetting One of the disciplines of maturing
- 4:32spiritually is learning how to forget.
- 4:35I'm sure you've heard that before but it's clear.
- 4:37It's here. Forgetting forgetting.
- 4:40What lies behind? And moving forward to what God
- 4:45has in store ahead. Now, when we think about
- 4:48forgetting we often think about our failures that is true but
- 4:54Paul also includes his success See, he wasn't like one of the
- 4:59churches in Revelation who had a reputation of being alive, but
- 5:01was dead who was just riding based on what has been or what
- 5:05has been done, or what he did do or what they did do for God.
- 5:08No, there's more land to cover, there's more land to explore.
- 5:10There's more things to be accomplished for the glory of
- 5:12Christ. and we can touch on that, but peripherally thinking
- 5:19about this, I've realized that one of the most crippling things
- 5:23to people's Spirit spirituality is in fact the inability to
- 5:27forget The success part? Yes, that's one group and we're
- 5:32not going to address that group. Today, we're going to address
- 5:34those who can't forget what has been done in terms of their
- 5:39failures. And their sin.
- 5:45And their shortcomings and their inconsistencies name it,
- 5:48whatever it is, whatever it is, that does not glorify God.
- 5:55Not being able to forget not being able to move on not being
- 5:58able to trust in the Forgiveness of Jesus Christ.
- 6:00As one of the most crippling things to a person spirituality.
- 6:04There are some believers who are in love with the Lord, but they
- 6:07are, there are haunted by things that they have done.
- 6:12I'm not talking about things before you met.
- 6:13Chris, I'm talking about the things after you met Christ,
- 6:17after you made those vows, I've never failing him, never
- 6:20disappointing. Him after making all these
- 6:22promises of the man you were going to be in your single
- 6:25years. The woman you're going to be in
- 6:26your singers. The man you're going to be.
- 6:27Once you got married, the woman you were going to be.
- 6:28Once you got married, the father, you're going to be.
- 6:30Once you had children the mother, you're gonna be once you
- 6:32had Shield, I'm talking about What the failures?
- 6:37That, you know, in your heart. Is extra strong because you
- 6:44never thought you would do it, you never thought that you would
- 6:47fall. So short, those kind of
- 6:49failures, the ones that are nagging the ones that can't let
- 6:52you go, the ones that have brought you to a place where you
- 6:55have no motivation anymore. Because what's the point I had
- 6:58motivation at one point here I am this is just a waste of time.
- 7:04And people look at their sanctification, like a New
- 7:08Year's resolution. They get excited.
- 7:11But after after time goes on, after you live long enough, you
- 7:14just stop making resolutions because you just know what's
- 7:16going to happen. Two weeks into the new year. and
- 7:20so they just coast along and they just go through the motions
- 7:22and then just they just try to survive.
- 7:27They just they just try not to mess up even more and even if
- 7:30they do, then what can I do? I already got this far.
- 7:36This could be for one person, it's going to be 45.
- 7:38I don't know. I just want to trust that the
- 7:40Lord will speak to our hearts today as we reflect upon the
- 7:43mercy of Jesus Christ. And trust and believe that he is
- 7:49more loving than you can imagine.
- 7:52He is more gracious than you can fathom.
- 7:54He is beyond good. He is gloriously good.
- 8:00And to understand that he is, he is a God who does not give up on
- 8:04us, we give up on ourselves, much easier than he does.
- 8:08I was just thinking about this. I mean, I know these are not
- 8:11profound thoughts, but I just thinking about this past week
- 8:14and just praying just pockets of time throughout the week and the
- 8:18strangest text came to mind. A text that you would not
- 8:23consider. To find some kind of Jewel.
- 8:27In relation to the goodness of God, the mercy of God, the God
- 8:30who gives more than Second Chances, a billion of them. 1st
- 8:35Corinthians 15. Would you meet me there in 1st
- 8:38Corinthians? 15 briefly.
- 8:43Let's begin together. And verse 3.
- 8:53There's a buzzing, I don't know if it's me or if it's if you
- 8:55guys hear if it's a buzzing in my own head but if somebody can
- 8:58help with that, buzzing sound, that'd be great.
- 9:02In First Corinthians, 15:3. Read for I delivered to you as
- 9:06of first importance, what I also received that Christ died for
- 9:10our sins in accordance with the scriptures that he was buried,
- 9:16that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the
- 9:20scriptures and that he appeared to cephas then to the twelve.
- 9:24Then he appeared to more than 500 Brothers.
- 9:26At one time, most of whom are still alive, though.
- 9:29Some have fallen asleep then He appeared to James then all the
- 9:34apostles last of all as to one untimely born, he appeared also
- 9:39to me to me. This is a text in which Paul
- 9:45seeks to build the faith of the Corinthian Believers to really
- 9:50believe that there is a bodily resurrection.
- 9:54And what he does is he points to a list of names who have been
- 9:57eyewitnesses to that account of how Christ did.
- 10:00In fact, raise he did arise, he did conquer death, and he still
- 10:05had the same scars. Of the body that was nailed to
- 10:09that tree. And what's?
- 10:12So encouraging here is that we have a historical reliability
- 10:15for our faith. That's what people usually come
- 10:17to this text for to see that. There was multiple multiple
- 10:21multiple people who had with their own eyes with their own
- 10:25hands, beheld. Him recognized him, heard him
- 10:30seen him, that's great. But we can't fail to seize that
- 10:36when Paul is writing this account when he is making a
- 10:38case, he's doing so in chronological order, he's
- 10:42writing the sequence of the appearances of Jesus, though,
- 10:44not including everyone. And there's a reason for that.
- 10:47It doesn't include the woman who first saw Christ and that we
- 10:50don't have the time to get into why he is really trying to
- 10:54authenticate the apostleship of some of the Corinthian Believers
- 10:58that they admired. Including Peter and so he's
- 11:02writing a Chronicle chronological order.
- 11:04And what's fascinating here is who he mentions first.
- 11:07Who he mentions first and verse five.
- 11:10And that he appeared to cephas. That is Peter and so, Paul by
- 11:15the spirit is letting the church know and us know that when Jesus
- 11:20rose from the grave, one of the first people that he was on a
- 11:26mission to manifest himself to Was the Apostle Peter?
- 11:34To me it is beyond just the fact that Peter was a leader not just
- 11:41a leader in the church but a leader among the apostles and so
- 11:44it would have been a comforting truth to know that the leader of
- 11:47the Apostles had that experience for himself.
- 11:50I think it's far greater than that though that is important.
- 11:55out of all the people that you would reveal yourself to Lord
- 12:00first, Peter is not on my top list.
- 12:06Because we know what Peter did before Christ died.
- 12:10Denied him, horribly horrific lie and what's even more
- 12:15painful. About those denies has that it
- 12:17was followed by this boast. It was preceded by this, this
- 12:22claim of faithfulness and he fell on his face miserably.
- 12:28And Peter here. apparently, Was one of the ones that Jesus made
- 12:35a priority to visit, once he conquered the grave.
- 12:41We don't have we don't have that account in scripture.
- 12:43We didn't know the ones in the house, all we know that it was
- 12:46after he revealed himself to Mary.
- 12:49And before he revealed himself to the 12, even those two on the
- 12:52road to Emmaus, when they had their own experience of the
- 12:55resurrected Christ, they ran back to the disciples and they
- 12:58said he has risen indeed and he has revealed himself to Simon.
- 13:03So, somewhere in between those moments, Peter experience Christ
- 13:09resurrected, get this alone. We have limited Peter's
- 13:15experience of the resurrected Christ in John 21 when he was on
- 13:18that fishing trip with his boys. But according to First
- 13:22Corinthians 15, there was this period.
- 13:24There was this appointment that Jesus had with Peter one on one.
- 13:30One on one. Did he deserve it?
- 13:34Here's my honest answer. No.
- 13:37No. I could see us thinking to
- 13:44ourselves. If we were in the shoes of
- 13:46Jesus, I'm gonna wait till the last person.
- 13:50Peter being the last one that I will reveal myself to let him
- 13:53sit a little bit and think about what he has done.
- 13:58Let him let him simmer and let him be sobered by his failure.
- 14:03Let him wallow in the mire a little bit longer just so he'll
- 14:05never forget and not think that you can just open his mouth
- 14:09whenever he Wants to let him just be there and then I'll
- 14:12come, it makes sense to come to those who are at least a little
- 14:15bit more faithful. And then come to the one who
- 14:17really really, really messed up. it would make sense to us in the
- 14:24flesh for Jesus, to be reluctant to come to Peter and yet He was
- 14:29the first. He was the first.
- 14:32He was the first. Did he deserve it?
- 14:36No. Did he need it?
- 14:39I think so. think about this, when Christ comes out of that
- 14:45tomb, And when he breaks the chains of death, and when he
- 14:50makes a statement of victory that is resounding today, one of
- 14:55his top desires was I must see Peter.
- 15:03And I must comfort him as he's enduring the pain of his
- 15:10shortcoming and his failure. And he does just that.
- 15:16And the fact that Jesus appears to Peter as a priority, not only
- 15:21emphasizes the grace of Jesus Christ because that's exactly
- 15:25what we're seeing here. it highlights his quickness, his
- 15:30swiftness to forgive he's not slow.
- 15:36He doesn't dangle our failures over us.
- 15:41And how and just cause us to hop, and to LEAP into, try to do
- 15:45anything in our strength, eliminate those memories, he
- 15:48doesn't do that, nor does he withhold the possibility of
- 15:51reconciliation for the repentant. know when Peter was
- 15:56shattered in his heart and when his eyes were weary from weeping
- 16:01Jesus shows up then, I wish we had that encounter in the
- 16:07scriptures. What was it like for Peter to
- 16:11see him alone? What were his words?
- 16:14What were the words of the master?
- 16:18Doesn't just emphasize his grace.
- 16:20It emphasizes his swiftness to forgive Christ is so quick, so
- 16:25quick. To come to clean and to restore.
- 16:31And we see it here even in the most unlikely place in a place
- 16:34where Paul is trying to make a case for the resurrection.
- 16:38We see also a message of the goodness of God And Jesus.
- 16:44Planned this because Jesus knew what Peter was going to do
- 16:48before he did it. Here's the thing.
- 16:51Christ isn't just appeared to Peter with a priority to restore
- 16:56and reconcile him. Yes John 21.
- 16:58That's something else. That's his commissioning into
- 17:00the ministry. This is a personal thing.
- 17:03This is this is for Fellowship sake.
- 17:08But he doesn't just bring him in.
- 17:10He doesn't just draw him close to his heart again.
- 17:14Turn with me to Luke quickly in 22.
- 17:17And I want you to see what Jesus said to Peter.
- 17:27Just moments before he would disappoint his master.
- 17:32Luke 22 verse 31. Simon Simon You know, Peter
- 17:42acted like Simon a lot more than he didn't act like Peter Simon.
- 17:47Simon. Behold Satan demanded to have
- 17:50you that he might sift. You like wheat?
- 17:53But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail.
- 17:58And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers
- 18:05Strengthen your brothers Peter. You are going to fall.
- 18:09You are going to stumble. And he could have stopped there,
- 18:14he could have just predicted it. And he could have said, and when
- 18:19you turn again, I'll be right here.
- 18:21Ready to forgive, not, let me pause here and say this a
- 18:25message, like this, Will stir the True Believer to Greater
- 18:31holiness. You know, people get worried of
- 18:34preaching messages like this because they think it will
- 18:36encourage the one who has a false Faith to continue in their
- 18:40sin and that is true. But the difference between the
- 18:43believer who has truly experienced salvation and the
- 18:45one who thinks they have been having is that when you hear
- 18:48what I'm about to say that Christ is ready to forgive when
- 18:52you fail, The believer will say though that I would never fail
- 18:56him. Oh that I would love if he is
- 19:00like that. I want to love him with
- 19:03everything within me. The unbeliever will say, well if
- 19:06this is who Jesus is and let's eat and drink and be merry for
- 19:10tomorrow. He forgives Jesus.
- 19:16Says, when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers,
- 19:20he could have said, when you turn again, I'm right here to
- 19:22forgive, but he goes beyond that, he says, Peter when you
- 19:28turn I still have use of you. I still have a purpose for you.
- 19:37Your brother still need you. I've put something in you that
- 19:42will bless the others. And so, even in the cry, in the
- 19:47mind of Christ, his Redemptive power.
- 19:52The reconciliation that he offers in those nail-pierced
- 19:55hands is able to recycle our failures and bless others
- 20:00through it. And so, he even tells him in
- 20:05advance. It's gonna happen.
- 20:08You will fall. But I am here, and I'm not just
- 20:12here to restore you. I'm here again, to launch you
- 20:17and to propel you and to use you for my namesake.
- 20:23We don't think that when we fall short, that's why it's in here.
- 20:28And listen, I know some of you perhaps are still trying to just
- 20:32fight to stay awake but bear with me.
- 20:33Okay, bear with me. There could the failure of your
- 20:41life in the past few years, it cannot just be like, it doesn't
- 20:45have to be this huge gross immorality.
- 20:48It could be the failure to be fervent for him.
- 20:52It could be just a failure to be zealous and consistent.
- 20:56It could be you finding other Loves.
- 20:57You Still Love Jesus, but you don't love him above all things.
- 21:00I'm talking about any kind of failure that has convinced you
- 21:04to say. I'm not like look, it's been a
- 21:07year. It's been two years, three
- 21:08years. I'm not changing.
- 21:09I'm Lord, just put me on the Shelf.
- 21:11I'll see you in glory. I want you to break free from
- 21:14that. Because here, we see a man who
- 21:16monumentally fails and Christ. Still tells him it.
- 21:20Consoles him in advance, I have use of you.
- 21:23I say I want to use, I want to do things through you.
- 21:30Strengthen your brothers. Because in Christ's mind when he
- 21:36forgives and when he restores, even those things that have
- 21:39severed us from enjoying his fellowship or of crushed us or
- 21:44have or have hindered us from experiencing Ministry, fruitful
- 21:48Ministry. Christ believes that.
- 21:52Even those things that we dread, that makes us shrink with shame.
- 21:58Can be used, go and comfort, your brother's going, encourage
- 22:02them, go warn them. After you have failed to take
- 22:06heed to my warning, gather all of those pieces, and let me put
- 22:11them together and use it as an instrument for my glory.
- 22:16And Peter obeyed. He might have forgotten what
- 22:20Jesus said immediately because he did fall.
- 22:23I mean, if you hear that, if you hear such a prophecy or Christ,
- 22:27looks you in the eyes as you're gonna, you're gonna fail.
- 22:30You're going to fall short, you're not going to totally be
- 22:33destroyed in your faith. He says, that clearly, Satan
- 22:36would love that. Wouldn't that make you fall on
- 22:38your knees and say, Lord, just have mercy on me, let it not.
- 22:40Be a Peter doesn't even register that.
- 22:43He's so self-confident that he just brushes it off.
- 22:46But I believe with all my heart, then after everything was said
- 22:49and done, he did remember the command of Jesus strengthen your
- 22:54brothers. Strengthen your brothers.
- 22:58Pick yourself up? Come before the cross laid at
- 23:02the foot of this cross? And then from that, move on.
- 23:07Go. There are people still need to
- 23:10be touched. There are things that still need
- 23:12to be accomplished. And when you just take a glimpse
- 23:15at the Epistles of Peter, you get the strong impression that
- 23:19he really did take this command. Seriously from his master, look
- 23:24with me quickly just to get an idea and first Peter one want
- 23:27you to see with your own eyes. And 1st Peter.
- 23:35Let's go to chapter 5 very quickly.
- 23:36You know this passage very well. What did you say here?
- 23:48And verse 6 of First, Peter 5, humble yourselves, What, you
- 23:53know why Peter failed because you didn't humble himself?
- 23:58I won't deny you. They might do it.
- 24:01I won't here. He is.
- 24:03Humble yourselves. Therefore, under the mighty hand
- 24:06of God? So that the proper time, he may
- 24:07exalt. You casting all your anxiety on
- 24:10him because he cares for you. Be sober.
- 24:12Minded Peter was not sober minded Peter wasn't sober minded
- 24:16when Christ predicted his fall and he wasn't sober minded
- 24:18because of his failure to pray. But Be sober-minded Be watchful
- 24:23your adversary, the devil prowls around, like a roaring lion
- 24:26seeking someone, Want to devour is pure inspired by the spirit,
- 24:30absolutely but the spirit is using Peters experience.
- 24:34Peter can remember that night in that Garden when his pride cause
- 24:40them to sleep when it's Pride cause I'm not see the necessity
- 24:44to pray and Be watchful and the devil was right there to devour
- 24:48his faith. And so now he writes to the
- 24:51church has Hey listen, if there is an enemy out there this
- 24:56Warfare It's bigger than you can imagine.
- 24:58Trust me. So Be watchful be sober minded
- 25:02and look what he says here in his Second Epistle and 1:10,
- 25:05second, Peter, 1:10, therefore Brothers.
- 25:10Therefore brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your
- 25:13calling and election for a few practice these qualities you
- 25:17will never fall. You will never fall.
- 25:21Here's a fallen brother who has fallen telling other Christians.
- 25:24I want to tell you how you you cannot fall and the preceding
- 25:29throughs are there given by the spirit and he dishes these
- 25:33things out. I mean, what kind of Grace are
- 25:35we talking about for a fallen disciple to tell other
- 25:39disciples, how not to Fall. Peter. when you turn again,
- 25:48strengthen your brothers, I have Ministry for you.
- 25:53I have people in mind that your personal life, your testimony,
- 25:57even the things that you're ashamed of, because you've
- 25:59repented, because you have brought it to me.
- 26:02Will do much good. But the extent of Peter's
- 26:09experience, the extent of his willingness to obey, the Lord
- 26:12goes beyond, just the Epistles that he's written.
- 26:15It is more personal than just corporate letters.
- 26:21And we see that in a very interesting place.
- 26:24In second Timothy 411. Just scroll back in your Bibles
- 26:29and go to 2nd Timothy with me. Second Timothy, 411, Paul and
- 26:39his dying moments makes final requests.
- 26:45And there is a surprising appeal that he makes to his spiritual
- 26:48son. Timothy and verse 11 of 2nd,
- 26:50Timothy, for Luke alone is with me.
- 26:53Get Mark. Get Mark and bring him with you
- 26:57for he is very useful to me for Ministry.
- 27:00I love the way, the ESV puts it very useful.
- 27:07Are you sure Paul is talking about the same, Mark the same
- 27:11Mark, that Paul refused to give a second chance to in Acts 15
- 27:16when they were ready to go on another missionary circuit and
- 27:20Barnabas brings the Sheepish young man and the presence of
- 27:24this Mighty Lion of an apostle. And Request that we give John
- 27:30Mark another chance and Paul a do-or-die kind of leader.
- 27:36He doesn't play games. Are you kidding me?
- 27:40Do you remember what he did in Acts 13 abruptly?
- 27:43Just left us and you want to bring him again?
- 27:48And here's Barnabas I can just imagine the conversation.
- 27:50We got to give him another chance.
- 27:52You know that the son of encouragement.
- 27:54Let's come on, Paul. Let's just he's willing.
- 27:58I mean look he's young. We here's Paul saying no way.
- 28:02This is not Sunday school stuff. Barnabas.
- 28:05We're going out into the front lines.
- 28:07We can't afford to be discouraged again.
- 28:09We don't know why. John, Mark left an extra team,
- 28:12but it was enough to frustrate this man of God.
- 28:15It was enough for him to say I've lost all trust in this man.
- 28:19Yes he's a Believer. He's a young man.
- 28:21He's a fine young man but he's not cut out for this thing
- 28:23called Ministry. And yet it is the same mark.
- 28:31We're years have gone by and Paul in his final moments,
- 28:36looking to be ministered to and to give final instructions for
- 28:39Ministry. Beyond his life says get that
- 28:42Mark. For his very useful to me.
- 28:47In the ministry. Many years have passed between
- 28:52acts 15 and second Timothy chapter 4.
- 28:57What happened to Mark? Well, the clear observations
- 29:01that, he grew, he matured and and it was enough to convince
- 29:06the Apostle Paul at this time to say, you've changed, you've
- 29:10grown God has stretched you. And you have laid your life down
- 29:15again, to allow him to stretch you And so, there was something
- 29:18observable. There was something measurable
- 29:21to Paul who again, did not play games, who didn't flatter and he
- 29:25says, I want you something happened to you come But what
- 29:30was it? Exactly?
- 29:31What was the instrument of change?
- 29:33Yes. Obviously his own personal
- 29:35accountability to the Lord, but could it be that the Catalyst?
- 29:38Could it be that the launching influence and John Marks life?
- 29:44Was how he was poured into how he received encouragement and
- 29:48how he received attention and mercy for him to find the wind
- 29:53and the grace again, to say, okay, I'm going to go for this
- 29:57again. I'm going to believe God, again,
- 30:00I didn't just fail. God, I failed the people of God.
- 30:02I failed my Ministry, I failed my local church.
- 30:05I've disappointed them, I didn't show up when I was supposed to
- 30:09show up. I didn't serve when I was
- 30:10supposed to serve. I took my Ministry lightly,
- 30:13maybe, maybe this. Is helping now, maybe this is
- 30:14coming home a little bit. And so what what happens is high
- 30:20believe with just the evidence of scripture with people like
- 30:24Barnabas in his life, who ended up taking, John Mark with him,
- 30:27and that Ministry team was severed for a moment.
- 30:31And said, let's let's do this. I'm with you.
- 30:36But I believe it was more than just barnabas's influence.
- 30:38I believe it was more than his presence and his encouragement,
- 30:41and I'll tell you why. Go back to 1st Peter 5 quickly
- 30:46with me. And look how Paul concludes his
- 30:51epistle. And verse 13. he writes, she who
- 31:03is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you, greetings and
- 31:07so, does Mark My son so does Mark my son, physical sun?
- 31:16No, spiritual son. Yes.
- 31:19The same Dynamic, I believe that Paul had with Timothy Peter had
- 31:24with this Mark. That's not very hard to see.
- 31:28It seems as though Peter had a special place and John Marks
- 31:31life even in the book of Acts you see that Peter Knew
- 31:36instinctively how to go to the House of Prayer in Acts 12.
- 31:40That was Mary's house seeking the Lord on his behalf for his
- 31:43imprisonment which was the house of John.
- 31:46Mark. Seems as though he was familiar
- 31:48with his family seems as though there was a special relationship
- 31:52that this particular Apostle had with this unit, which included?
- 31:56John Mark. and some believe that it was Peter, who led John Mark
- 32:02to the Lord that is not for certain about what is for
- 32:05certain that at some point the Apostle Peter adopted Mark as a
- 32:10spiritual son and raised him up in the Lord, raised him up in
- 32:16the Lord where he can say he's my son.
- 32:20He's my son. And based on this many, if not
- 32:25all have come to the conclusion that the gospel written
- 32:28according to mark. Was heavily influence and
- 32:32supplied by the eyewitness testimony of his spiritual
- 32:35Father. Peter And so, you can just
- 32:39imagine, here's John, Mark, sitting with Peter, who would
- 32:42make frequent visits to his home and perhaps, even after his
- 32:46failure, where he comes back to Jerusalem, aborting the mission,
- 32:49Peter still stays in touch with them.
- 32:51You can just imagine the times together, where he would tell
- 32:54him of the eyewitness accounts. He would tell them of the
- 32:56personal testimonies that would eventually Supply.
- 32:59And give us what we are studying as a church, the gospel of Mark.
- 33:06And I think that is quite special.
- 33:11And I believe there's internal evidence for that because only
- 33:14Mark has a detail. If you were there for the first
- 33:16message of the Gospel of Mark study, you'll remember this only
- 33:20Mark has a detail about the resurrection that all the other
- 33:25gospel accounts. Oh, mint.
- 33:28And it makes sense, right? If Peter was the spiritual
- 33:30father of Mark and he was getting all that he needed from
- 33:34this man as his main source. Then this detail is just it's
- 33:38heartwarming it's in the last chapter of Mark, Mark 16 verse
- 33:437. Matthew.
- 33:50And we have Mark. Mark 16.
- 33:59Here's the angel. And in verse six, young men who
- 34:05is sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe.
- 34:07He said to them do not be alarmed.
- 34:09You seek Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified.
- 34:12He has risen, he is not here. See the place where they laid
- 34:19him, but go tell his disciples and who Peter Did he is going
- 34:26before you to Galilee? There, you will see him just as
- 34:30he told you. Go tell the disciples and Peter
- 34:36go tell the disciples and Peter. Wasn't Peter disciple.
- 34:40Absolutely, but I have a hunch. He didn't feel like a disciple
- 34:43at this point. and so here's a messenger from Heaven who's been
- 34:49given specific instruction and the instruction was passed along
- 34:52to this group and he tells this group when you go to those, when
- 34:58you go to those men who are hiding for their life, let them
- 35:04know that he has risen, but make sure that you named Peter
- 35:10separately. Make sure you say to the
- 35:14disciples and Peter highlight. Peter.
- 35:18Why? Because Peter needed to hear his
- 35:21name, Peter needed to know that even as he was sitting in his
- 35:26failure, Christ has him in mind and wants to see him.
- 35:34Can you imagine what it was like for Peter to share that with
- 35:37Mark? When he wrote it down?
- 35:40Mark listen, when the angel did come He said go and tell his
- 35:45disciples. And Mark get this, he singled me
- 35:50out. Make sure you mention that he
- 35:53said my name. Disciples and Peter.
- 36:01By the spirit, Mark, the soul. And all of this is starting to
- 36:04make sense. Now met here, is Mark at the end
- 36:07of Paul's life, who is very useful to his ministry and you
- 36:10see in another place that Peter was his spiritual father and
- 36:14surely, there's some kind of connection to the growth had to
- 36:16do with the influence of this men and his life.
- 36:19And it makes sense for Peter to take the time to bring in Mark
- 36:24and to pour into him because he himself was restored.
- 36:30He himself knew what a second chance can do.
- 36:34He himself knew the power of compassion and forgiveness, and
- 36:38mercy and kindness. Do you know who are the
- 36:42Christians who forgive those who have been forgiven and know it,
- 36:48you know, do you know the Christians that that are willing
- 36:54to open their arms and bring in those who have even disappointed
- 36:58them? Those who know that?
- 37:00They I've lost the number of times that they have
- 37:03disappointed their lord and yet Christ, every time says come
- 37:07back to me. Forgiven people forgive people.
- 37:17Merciful people have tasted Mercy.
- 37:21Those who don't give up on others even when they have
- 37:24turned their back on you and rejected you in a failed.
- 37:27You are those who live under the Revelation?
- 37:29I've done worse to my Lord and He Still Loves Me.
- 37:38And so here, we see Mark very useful because of a man who felt
- 37:43useless was reminded when you turn again, strengthen your
- 37:49brothers, strengthen your brothers, It's amazing.
- 37:55How meditating on our own failures.
- 37:58Can either crippled us into 2023.
- 38:03And just keep us in the same place or even worse than before.
- 38:07Or like Peter. It can make us much more
- 38:10forgiving. Make us much more soft and
- 38:16tender. and willing to say, yes, willing to say no matter what
- 38:21you've done, I'm ready to forgive you Peter knew how to
- 38:28patiently work with Mark, because he saw the patience of
- 38:32Jesus. And the fragments of marks,
- 38:35life, give us the hope and obliterates that cynical
- 38:40attitude. That looks at others and says,
- 38:42they'll never change. They'll never change.
- 38:49The miracle of Mercy is that even the most unlikely can
- 38:52change. and even those who are sitting in the pool of their
- 38:59regret, Can soar again for the glory of Jesus Christ. 20:22 for
- 39:12some of you, perhaps, for many of us could have been a terrible
- 39:17record. Of how we live for the glory of
- 39:20Jesus Christ. And that can either cause us to
- 39:24just be numb. And go back fishing.
- 39:29And just do life. Or it can cause us to say, Lord
- 39:36are you serious that even even in my idolatry even in my shame
- 39:43even in my unfaithfulness, you are still willing to say turn
- 39:46again. And let me clothed.
- 39:49You and Empower you and Turn you back and push you into a life
- 39:55that is beyond your imagination. Is that really you?
- 39:57Lord, it is him. It is him.
- 40:02So maybe you didn't pray like you were supposed to pray in
- 40:052022, maybe in 2022, you didn't know it.
- 40:10But you got a new vacuum and it was your Bible because it's just
- 40:12collecting dust. Maybe.
- 40:18Maybe you have really hurt others, not just the Lord like
- 40:22John Mark, you've hurt good. Men, Godly men Godly woman.
- 40:30And you just want to be hidden and sneak in and out.
- 40:35And just make sure that you get into those Gates even though
- 40:39your clothes might smell like fire.
- 40:43I'm telling you that this Jesus is ready.
- 40:48To cleanse you. To look past all of that.
- 40:53To not just hold you for eternal life to make much of you in this
- 40:57life. Make much of you in this life.
- 41:01He's not dangling, your failure of 2022 as you enter in 2023
- 41:05Series. Yeah I know you're going to do
- 41:07the same thing. Look at you.
- 41:10Ah, no, not you. There was people way more
- 41:13faithful than you and 2022. Thank you but you just stay
- 41:17there. Stay quiet.
- 41:19Don't mess up. More than you already have.
- 41:21I'll see you at the Judgment seat of Christ.
- 41:23That's not Jesus. That's not the Lord.
- 41:29He makes it a priority to restore those who have fallen he
- 41:34first appeared to cephas. If that is the heart of Christ,
- 41:41as I see it. Then who Christ is drawn to In
- 41:45This Place. Whoever is listening who does
- 41:48not have much to boast about. We don't at all. who has more to
- 41:53be ashamed of such as the person that the Lord desires to
- 41:58manifest himself to To fill your fresh with the Holy Spirit.
- 42:05And to so cause you to Marvel at his Mercy.
- 42:10You would know his strength like you've never known before.
- 42:14I pray that today, you would forget. forget in a way that it
- 42:18would not hinder you from growing and maturing in the Lord
- 42:22for getting in the way that Jesus forgets, the omniscient
- 42:25one who doesn't delete his memory but the never holds what
- 42:28you've done against you ever again, when you ask for that
- 42:31forgiveness, I pray that you would grow more and more and
- 42:37letter the revelation of the goodness of Jesus Christ and how
- 42:40fitting, as we come to remember his mercy and these emblems And
- 42:46rehearse over our souls that it's what he has done for us.
- 42:51It's the rejoicing of his love for us and not our love for him
- 42:54necessarily. Could you prepare your hearts
- 42:57with me as we just meditate on these truths together?
- 43:34Oh, Lord. We're just amazed, we are
- 43:43amazed. As we are in the presence of
- 43:47Jesus, the Nazarene. And we just ask for one simple
- 43:55thing. Just a Touch.
- 44:04Of your mercy. To heal us again.
- 44:09And to motivate us again unto righteousness and faithfulness
- 44:13to you. You just pray Lord that if
- 44:18anybody here has been overwhelmed.
- 44:25Anything in between gross iniquity.
- 44:29Or just spiritual laziness. We just pray that they would
- 44:34sense The Nearness of your presence.
- 44:39Coupled with the truth. That you are Beyond us.
- 44:46In your willingness to forgive and restore.
- 44:50That you take Delight in restoring us that it actually
- 44:54brings you pleasure to reposition Us in you again.
- 45:03And so Lord At the beginning of this new year. let Faith arise
- 45:10to trust that you have great things in store for each of us
- 45:14and that you do not hold any sin that has been repented of
- 45:20against us moving forward. and with that truth Lord, even as we
- 45:26partake of the bread and the cup Maybe like Peter extend the
- 45:33mercy that we have been shown. Be willing to forgive others.
- 45:38And to believe that our willingness to give others a
- 45:42second chance, could be the very thing that causes them to be
- 45:45very useful to you. As they experience your love
- 45:49through us. And so Lord, we thank you for
- 45:53the cross. We thank you.
- 45:55That that Crimson flow is endless.
- 46:00In that it is able to constantly wash us.
- 46:05Over and over again, that Fountain never runs dry and
- 46:12though, our sins may be many your mercy is more.
- 46:17It is more. It is always always more.
- 46:22And so Lord this afternoon, we come broken, we come broken and
- 46:26we confess our failure. And our unfaithfulness and are
- 46:31distractions and idolatry and we just everything that has been
- 46:34gathered up to this point and we just bring it to this moment and
- 46:40we say Lord I put it all aside and give it to you.
- 46:43I ask that you, you just take it all away and Lord, please, as I
- 46:48turn again to you. Use me.
- 46:52Use me. Use me.
- 46:57We ask these things in Jesus name.
- 46:59Amen, We Stand. Let's Worship the Lord together.
