- 0:31This is Scott Becker with the Beckers HealthCare
- 0:34podcast.
- 0:36This is a short episode about UnitedHealthcare,
- 0:39and the title of this will be UnitedHealthcare
- 0:42gets crushed.
- 0:43And we're just gonna go through seven or
- 0:45eight quick points related to UnitedHealthcare.
- 0:48So on Tuesday, the twenty seventh,
- 0:50the stock of UnitedHealthcare,
- 0:52or towards the very end of the day
- 0:53now, dropped by about 20% for the day.
- 0:57It's also down about 48%
- 0:59over the last fifty two weeks. So so,
- 1:02really, there's a good, bad, and ugly here
- 1:04story.
- 1:05First, earnings for last year and revenues for
- 1:08last year came out pretty well.
- 1:10Earnings per share for the fourth quarter ended
- 1:12up above expectations.
- 1:14They end up in revenues for the year
- 1:16at 448,000,000,000,
- 1:18making United about the third or fourth largest
- 1:20company by revenues in The United States. So
- 1:22that's all good news.
- 1:24The the bad news is they're projecting
- 1:27lower revenues
- 1:28next year. This is about the first time
- 1:30in about forty years, four decades, that they
- 1:32projected
- 1:34reduced revenues versus growth in revenues. That's bad
- 1:37news. The Optum Health business also struggled.
- 1:40They're they're also expecting a contraction
- 1:43in Medicare and Medicaid membership enrollment.
- 1:46And finally, the medical loss ratio has skied
- 1:49to about 89%.
- 1:50Now I've been watching medical loss ratios for
- 1:52the last ten years or so, not before
- 1:54that. I don't remember really it being top
- 1:56of mind. Remember during COVID and before that,
- 1:59medical loss ratio has been in the eighty
- 2:01two, eighty five percent range. When they got
- 2:03to eighty five, eighty six percent, the health
- 2:05insurance started to have more trouble.
- 2:07Now when you see United last year at
- 2:09eighty nine point one percent, those are really
- 2:11challenging numbers for insurers. Now as a health
- 2:13care consumer,
- 2:14as a health care operator,
- 2:16we think medical cost ratio should be pretty
- 2:18high because more dollars should be devoted towards
- 2:20health care than administrative costs. But either way,
- 2:23from a health insurance perspective, these are challenging
- 2:26numbers. Now the thing I'll also point out
- 2:28about today's earnings release and what's happening with
- 2:30United is it's not unique to United.
- 2:33The other big insurers are also taking it
- 2:35on the chin today, both the Medicaid insurers
- 2:38and the Medicare insurers and the commercial insurers,
- 2:41everybody's taking it on the chin. Humana's also
- 2:43down about 19% today. Thank you for listening
- 2:46to this episode of the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 2:48Thank you very much for joining us.
