- 0:07The San Francisco Giants faced the Houston Astros at the Astrodome for a Monday night
- 0:10game on April 17, 1972.
- 0:13The Giants were managed by Charlie Fox and had been an excellent team for over a decade.
- 0:18Unfortunately, throughout the 1960s, the Cardinals and Dodgers were just a little bit better.
- 0:22The Giants went to the World Series in 1962 but finished in second place in five of the
- 0:27next nine seasons.
- 0:28They finally broke through in 1971 under Fox in his first full season as a manager, but
- 0:33lost in the NLCS to the Pirates.
- 0:36At the start of the 1970s, the Astros were still no better than an average team.
- 0:39They had finally broke free of the seven straight 90-plus lost seasons that launched the franchise
- 0:44and had managed to finish in the middle of the NL West for the three straight seasons
- 0:47under manager Harry Walker.
- 0:49This audio recording is from the San Francisco Radio broadcast featuring announcers Lon Simmons
- 0:53and Bill Thompson.
- 0:54Dirkker was 12 and 6 last season, we say, and had to sit out a lot of the year because
- 1:00of bad arms.
- 1:03He's 12 and 6 lifetime against the Giants.
- 1:10Dirkker wasn't able to pitch after August 8th last year.
- 1:13At one time, he had a 10 and 1 record in 1971 but came in with a bad arm.
- 1:20He can throw hard.
- 1:21He's still a very young man.
- 1:26He's just 25 years old.
- 1:31He's now in Houston.
- 1:34He was born in Hollywood, California.
- 1:38Been with Houston ever since 1964.
- 1:42They didn't have a curfew for him when he first joined the ball club.
- 1:45They just changed his diapers late in the evening.
- 1:48He was just a baby when he came over to Houston and he stuck around with him.
- 1:54He delivers to Willie Mays who hits the first pitch to shortstop, Metzger, the first base,
- 1:59and Mays is retired for the first out.
- 2:02So Willie went for the first pitch.
- 2:04They have each of the first two games of the season and grounds out to shortstop.
- 2:08They think there's only one way to take you out of the ball game.
- 2:11Take you out to it, that is, in a 1972 Chevrolet.
- 2:14Caprice is the most luxurious way to do it.
- 2:17Chevrolet wants your new Caprice to be the best car you ever owned.
- 2:22Keto 20s, well that left-handed, has a switch batter against Durker.
- 2:26Jakeskins side, well for a ball, one and all, Mel Stunner behind the plate.
- 2:35Durker has a lifetime record of 83 wins and 68 losses.
- 2:41High fly ball, the right field, wind, drifting back, waiting for this one, and Keto is out
- 2:47number two.
- 2:48Durker is 6'4", 210 pounds.
- 2:49He will face now Kenny Henderson.
- 2:50Kenny didn't get a hit last night, but he got a run across the plate when he struck
- 3:05out on a pitch that hit the dirt, bound it away for a while pitch that allowed Mays to
- 3:10score from third.
- 3:11Pitch to Henderson.
- 3:12Swung on, line drive to center field.
- 3:13Cedeno was there and makes the catch.
- 3:17Three pitches for Durker, four pitches.
- 3:22He delivered one bad one to 20s, but four pitches and he retires the side.
- 3:26No run, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 3:30And as we go to the bottom of the first to score, the Giants nothing and Houston coming
- 3:35to back.
- 3:41John Cumberland who won nine and lost six for the Giants last year is out there on the
- 3:47mound, 25 years old as John.
- 3:52Wanted a belated happy birthday to Giants trainer Leo Hughes who was 39 two days ago.
- 4:02Forgot to wish him a happy birthday.
- 4:08And now John Cumberland, he always said John is 25, he will not be 25 until May 10th of
- 4:16this year.
- 4:17Trying to make him too old for his time here as he delivers to Metzger and it's outside
- 4:22for a ball.
- 4:23Metzger turned around as if to sacrifice, to bunt rather.
- 4:25Metzger is switch batter.
- 4:26He'd have a little tough time sacrificing being as he's the lead off batter.
- 4:30He was going to try to bunt, test Kingman.
- 4:33Now he takes the second pitch high for ball two.
- 4:36It's been a long time for Cumberland to be on the mound.
- 4:38Of course it has been for all the pitches as far as that goes.
- 4:43John relies on his control.
- 4:45He's behind two and oh here.
- 4:46Gets a strike in at the knees and it's two and one.
- 4:48The Giants defensively, Henderson in left maze and center, Bonds in right.
- 4:52Kingman at third, Spire at short, Wontes at second, McCovey at first and Healy doing the
- 4:56catching.
- 4:57Cumberland's two one pitches, high ball three.
- 4:59He's behind three and one.
- 5:00The Giants dropped behind three to nothing in the first inning last night.
- 5:03It came clawing back to win it ten to six yesterday afternoon.
- 5:09All right.
- 5:10It looked like it was night.
- 5:13Strike call three and two.
- 5:16Full count for the lead off man Metzger.
- 5:22Three two pitch, bounded slowly to the left side.
- 5:24Kingman charged in front of shortstop.
- 5:25His throw in time and Metzger is retired for out number one.
- 5:30Kingman moving very quickly to his left in front of Spire to field that ball and throw
- 5:34out Metzger.
- 5:35Top race drivers proved it.
- 5:37Stars that can use unleaded gasoline can get great performance from Chevron unleaded, especially
- 5:42blended with no lead added.
- 5:44Available only all along the Chevron line.
- 5:47Cesar Cedeno.
- 5:52Right hand batter against Cumberland.
- 5:54Bluffs the buck, takes low for a ball.
- 5:56And Kingman came sailing in as Cedeno hitting three seventy five as three hits and eight
- 6:01trips against Giants pitching.
- 6:02That is all that he's faced in the regular season.
- 6:06Kingman playing even with the back of the outfield backed up.
- 6:08Cedeno has power.
- 6:09Blind drive to left field coming over is Henderson.
- 6:11He makes a one handed catch just above the shoot off.
- 6:15That was a bullet hit into left center field and Henderson rushing over to his left.
- 6:20Caught that one just above his shoot off for the second out of the inning.
- 6:25And now Jim Winn who is greeted in different fashion by different folks.
- 6:37Right hand batting right fielder takes outside for a ball one and all.
- 6:40Jim has become a very controversial figure in Houston.
- 6:46One oh pitch.
- 6:47Ball two.
- 6:48Cumberland turns that one over.
- 6:51Down low and it's two and all.
- 6:54Rogers lead Atlanta one to nothing after an inning.
- 6:57Cleveland beat Boston four to nothing that one to finals.
- 7:01Looping liner to left field for a base hit.
- 7:03Winn has his first base hit of the season.
- 7:06And he singles over the head of Chris Spire to left.
- 7:11The first hit of the ball game and Lee May.
- 7:14Close to deliver the power for the Astros this year.
- 7:18Hitting three seventy five as three hits and eight trips.
- 7:24Right hand batting first baseman.
- 7:26After five innings New York and Baltimore are nothing nothing.
- 7:29High fly ball down the left field line.
- 7:33Henderson coming over near the line.
- 7:35Drifting into foul territory makes the catch and the side is retired.
- 7:41May flies out.
- 7:42No runs on a hit.
- 7:43No errors on a runner left on.
- 7:45At the end of one.
- 7:47The score the Giants nothing and Houston nothing.
- 7:49Theodore M Company San Francisco and other cities.
- 7:54Willie McCovey leads off the second for the Giants.
- 8:01Willie has two hits and nine trips.
- 8:05One of his hits was about a mile.
- 8:08Up in the right field seat the two run homer in the opening game and Larry Ducker delivers
- 8:13to McCovey.
- 8:14Fastball bounded up the middle.
- 8:15Metzger is playing directly behind second.
- 8:17He has it throws the first and the Covey is an easy out.
- 8:20Five pitches now is all that Ducker has delivered and he has recorded four outs.
- 8:26You know the more you like beer the more reason to drink hands if you don't believe it.
- 8:30Ask one of the brotherhood.
- 8:35Bobby Bond three hits and seven trips two doubles.
- 8:40He was on base five times last night.
- 8:42Three hits he was hit and he was walked.
- 8:45Four times Ducker delivers the body.
- 8:48One on line drive to center but Sedaniel will get this one.
- 8:51He does.
- 8:52Is the second out the Giants are going to get this one over in a hurry one way or another.
- 8:59That is six pitches now and five outs recorded.
- 9:02As Dave Kingman comes to the plate.
- 9:05Kingman four hits and nine attempts.
- 9:08One double one triple one home run.
- 9:10Six RBI.
- 9:11Hit for the cycle last night even though he didn't know what it meant.
- 9:16Take the high fastball for a ball.
- 9:18So Kingman didn't go for the first pitch.
- 9:20One and oh.
- 9:21Two down base and then.
- 9:25I feel well around to the left.
- 9:27They can't get deep enough when Kingman hits one on the fat part of the bat.
- 9:32Ducker taking a long look.
- 9:33Now the tall right hander deals off to Kingman.
- 9:36Swung on it missed and it's one and one.
- 9:40Breaking pitch he didn't get.
- 9:41The slowest leads Philadelphia three to nothing.
- 9:42It fills batting in the bottom of the third.
- 9:43We're in the top of the second inning.
- 9:47Nothing to nothing.
- 9:48Two down.
- 9:49Bases empty.
- 9:50Kingman with a one and one count.
- 9:51Straight away stamp.
- 9:52Kingman bends over from the waist and waits for Ducker's one one pitch.
- 9:55Low for ball two.
- 9:57Ducker slipped and fell that time.
- 10:02One hit in the game.
- 10:03The Astros have that two out single by Wynn off Cumberland the first inning.
- 10:07Raider the third baseman guarding the line and playing back deep.
- 10:10Press the infield back up and as we set the outfield roll around to the left and very
- 10:13deep.
- 10:14Three thirty down the line.
- 10:15Three seventy eight in the power alley.
- 10:16High fly ball.
- 10:17Very high.
- 10:18But short and right center as Wynn and Cedeno converge and it's Cedeno that makes the catch
- 10:24for the third out.
- 10:25No runs.
- 10:26No hits.
- 10:27No errors.
- 10:28No one left on.
- 10:29And they go to the bottom of the second.
- 10:30The score is the Giants nothing and Houston nothing.
- 10:37So watch the Giants.
- 10:40Bob Watson up here bounds one on one off to Kingman whose throw is letter perfect to Willie
- 10:44McCovey and Watson is retired for out number one.
- 10:47Watson was a guy that Sam McDowell had trouble getting out last night.
- 10:51He had a home run a three run shot and two singles.
- 10:56Third baseman Doug Raider now.
- 11:00Right hand batting third baseman.
- 11:05Having one twenty five he takes ball one.
- 11:16Raider closed stance deep in the batter's box swings and misses the breaking pitch and
- 11:20it's one on one.
- 11:22Raider has one hit and eight tries.
- 11:27Now Fran Healy will go out and talk to Cumberland.
- 11:33One down bases empty.
- 11:36Giants and Houston in the bottom of the second.
- 11:39Nothing nothing.
- 11:40Giants have won the first two games of the series.
- 11:43One one pitch.
- 11:44Swung on and missed he changed up on him and threw him a skew ball and Raider didn't get
- 11:48it.
- 11:49He was way out in front.
- 11:50That's a ball and two strikes.
- 11:51One and two count.
- 11:52And field backs up now in the outfield deep.
- 12:00One two pitch.
- 12:01Fast ball outside it's two and two.
- 12:04Cumberland is not afraid to challenge hitters.
- 12:06He walks out there with all the confidence in the world.
- 12:12John's two two offering.
- 12:13Swung on and foul and that one winged Mel Steiner the home plate umpire.

- 12:36Two two count.
- 12:41And Cumberland's pitch.
- 12:42Fast ball outside at full count three and two.
- 12:45McNamara and Amalfatano are certainly great for the Giants.
- 12:49Not only are they sound baseball men but they also each possess a fine sense of humor and
- 12:56they're good keeping the ball club loose keeping them happy.
- 12:59Three two pitch.

- 13:17Kingman to his left field.
- 13:18It in front of Spire throws perfect.
- 13:20Out number two.
- 13:22It is remarkable to see this big fella at third base move around as quickly as he does.
- 13:26He has good actions over there and he moves in at all that time to get that sharp chopper
- 13:31off the bat of Raider and throw him out easily.
- 13:34Kingman has a good strong arm.
- 13:36He can rifle the ball.

- 15:20Jerker in front 0 and 2.
- 15:23You know Bill there's an interesting thing.
- 15:26I think it's the tail end of the order's turn to win the ball game tonight.
- 15:29Because the top of the order won it the first night.
- 15:31The middle part won it last yesterday afternoon.
- 15:33I'll drink to that.
- 15:34Yeah I'll bet.
- 15:35The 0-2 pitch on its way.
- 15:40Just outside a slider missing.

- 16:29Healy on a check swing and a rower back past Jerker.
- 16:33Helms was pulled a bit towards second base.
- 16:36Had to go a couple of steps to his right to make the play and did.
- 16:39Healy for the first out.
- 16:41Chris Spire, switch batter, batting left-handed.
- 16:46Chris still looking for his first hit.

- 18:04Jerker in front of the ball and two strikes.
- 18:16Right-hander's one-two pitch.
- 18:18A bit too high.
- 18:21Jerker, Edwards again not too happy with that call.
- 18:28Two-and-two count on John Cumberland.
- 18:35Jerker into the motion.
- 18:40A 2-2 pitch on its way.
- 18:42Outside ball three.
- 18:45So Jerker, for the first time in a ball game, goes to a 4-count on a batter.
- 18:58Jerker's called time and tied his shoe.
- 19:01That's the first of the 1972 season.

- 23:33One hop goes to first and gets him.
- 23:37May's in a line shot up the middle.
- 23:39Tommy Helms to his right.
- 23:41Backhand to the ball on the first hop.
- 23:43Spahnman made a good throw to first base to cut down May's for out number one.
- 23:51Pauwani's flying to right in inning number one.
- 24:01Rader in on the turf at third.
- 24:05Dirkert kicks and fires.
- 24:06Fast ball loop to left center field.
- 24:08Sedeno on the run, now slows up and makes the catch for out number two.
- 24:16The two outs and the bases empty, Kenny Henderson will be the Giants batter.
- 24:19Here's something to remember any time you have a motoring need.
- 24:22There are more than 23,000 Standard Stations and Chevron dealers ready to help you along the Chevron way.
- 24:29Ken Henderson lined to Sedeno in center field in inning number one.
- 24:34Kenny batting left-handed against the right-hander, Lily Dirkert, who switches a lead-up that swing on a miss strike one.
- 24:440-1 count on Henderson.
- 24:52Rader now playing back even with a bag at third.
- 24:56Press the defense right-hander onto the right.
- 24:58Out to a back-up, a swing and a miss on a curve, strike two.
- 25:01Dirkert in front, O-1-2, two outs.
- 25:03Dirkert at the inning number four.
- 25:04Giants nothing and the Astros nothing.
- 25:13Dirkert checking signs.
- 25:17Okay, this one from Edwards.
- 25:18Cranks up for the O-2 pitch.
- 25:20Fast ball is outside, ball one.
- 25:23A one-and-two count.
- 25:32Dirkert again taking a bit of time between pitches.
- 25:40Now into the motion with a one-two pitch to Henderson.
- 25:43Foul back off the fist.
- 25:44So we'll drop back on the screen, direct him back at the plate.
- 25:46And go bounding back down to the playing field.
- 25:50Now remains the ball on two strikes.
- 26:03Dirkert ready.
- 26:04So is Henderson, a one-two pitch.
- 26:06Oh, strike three.
- 26:07Slider on the outside corner.
- 26:09Dirkert gets his first strike out.
- 26:11He's now retired twelve in a row.
- 26:13The Giants fourth, no runs, no hits, no Houston errors.
- 26:16No runners left at the end of three and a half.
- 26:18That's nothing. The Astros nothing.
- 26:22Bottom of inning number four, the Astros at the two, three, and four spots in the order.
- 26:27Center fielder Cesar Sudeno.
- 26:29Right fielder Jim Winn and first baseman Lee May.
- 26:32Sudeno right-handed batter.
- 26:34The line drive, the left field, in inning number one is Kenny Henderson.
- 26:37Made it much better than average play on.
- 26:39Kenny, racing towards left center, reaching down and picking him just off the turf.
- 26:49Pemberlund's pitch, low ball one.
- 26:51Jerry Royce has just joined the Houston Ball Club today.
- 26:55He's being acquired and traded from St. Louis.
- 26:58Loosing out in the right field, bullpen.
- 27:01One out pitch. Sudeno takes just outside ball two.
- 27:13Dodgers leading Atlanta three to nothing after three.
- 27:15Philadelphia and St. Louis tied three-three.
- 27:18Drive down the left field line, it'll hook foul back into the seats.
- 27:21Phillies are batting in the bottom of the fifth inning in that one.
- 27:26The American make clear one beat Boston four to nothing.
- 27:29Baltimore batting in the bottom of the seventh.
- 27:31Orioles and New York Yankees scoreless.
- 27:37Left-hander John Cumberland's two-one delivery.
- 27:39Ground ball right side, 20s, I think we're far to his left.
- 27:41Short hop, the throw, then gets him.
- 27:43Good play by Tito.
- 27:52Right fielder Jim Winn, a looping single to left field in inning number one.
- 27:57Winn, the only baserunner, that's far in the ballgame.
- 28:00We're in the bottom of the fourth, one out.
- 28:04Cumberland's fifth.
- 28:05Check swing and a base hit to right field.
- 28:09Bond throws back in.
- 28:10Winn falling away from the pitch.
- 28:13Had the ball hit the bat.
- 28:14The Winnies was pulled all over to our second base.
- 28:16The ball scooted into right field for a base hit.
- 28:18The Winn is two for two.
- 28:20He has the two hits in the ballgame.
- 28:23Here's first baseman Lee May, who fouled out to Henderson.
- 28:26In inning number one, May, big right-handed batter.
- 28:30Giants pull a defense well around to the left.
- 28:34Winn is going.
- 28:35They've got him picked off, and he's blocked his call.
- 28:41Winn breaking from first base.
- 28:43Cumberland started to throw to first and stopped, and that became the block.
- 28:48John knew what he wanted to do.
- 28:49He wanted to back off the mound and run at Winn, but he had made a motion to throw, and it'll go as the block.
- 28:55That was a proper call.
- 29:00Winn moves up to second in the scoring position.
- 29:11Cumberland set.
- 29:12Blaney's trying to keep Winn close at second.
- 29:14Breaking pitch, a checked swing.
- 29:15We'll wait for the umpires to go.
- 29:32Two in the dirt, dug out by Healy.
- 29:34Two and nothing count.
- 29:43Two and 0 to count on Lee May.
- 29:48Cumberland checks second base, comes to the plate 2-0.
- 29:51Fast ball as it calls back.
- 29:52That one just above the knees.
- 29:54Cumberland in on the count at two and one.
- 30:07Blaney's right at second base.
- 30:09Winn with a pretty good lead.
- 30:10Cumberland comes to the plate, high fly ball to left field.
- 30:13Routine play for Henderson who jogs in, gets towards the line, and makes the catch for out number two.
- 30:18Goes quickly towards second base.
- 30:19Winn is back in.
- 30:28Left fielder Bob Watson.
- 30:32Down to the third in inning number two.
- 30:34Watson, a right-handed batter.
- 30:36Winn at second, two outs.
- 30:37Bottom of the fourth.
- 30:38Giants nothing, Astros nothing.
- 30:45Now it's Spiers turn to try to keep Winn close at second.
- 30:49They got him picked off between second and third.
- 30:50Defeated third.
- 30:52Kingman chasing him back towards second.
- 30:54Lobbs to Pawenny who tags him out.
- 30:56Winn tried to pull a delayed steal on Fran Healy, and Healy wouldn't be tricked.
- 31:01Fran saw what Winn was up to, and Winn, Healy in place of throwing the ball back to the pitchers,
- 31:06Winn thought he would.
- 31:08As he was breaking for third, Healy rifled a throw to Kingman.
- 31:10Kingman chased Winn back towards second, two to Pawenny who made the tag.
- 31:15So the play goes two to five to four to retire the side.
- 31:19For Houston in the fourth, no runs, one hit.
- 31:21No Giants errors.
- 31:22No runners left on it.
- 31:23The end of four.
- 31:24The Giants nothing and the Astros nothing.
- 31:29Four in total.
- 31:30The Giants absolutely nothing.
- 31:32The Astros no runs, two hits, no errors.
- 31:34Rating number five, Lon Simmons.
- 31:36Willie McCovey to lead off for the Giants, and the Astros go into that shift to,
- 31:40although Metzger doesn't go to the right of second base.
- 31:42He's almost directly behind second.
- 31:43Rader about 30 feet off the line, maybe 35 and playing back deep.
- 31:47Elms on the outfield grass.
- 31:49The second baseman will let up as a strike to McCovey.
- 31:52The outfield deep and around to the right.
- 31:53The Giants do not have a hit in the first four innings.
- 31:55The Astros have two, both by the same man, Jim Winn.
- 32:00So it's been a defensive battle and good defensive plays on each side.
- 32:04Elms robbing Mays of a base hit.
- 32:07McCovey takes a fastball that jams in for strike two.
- 32:11Dirk are busting the fastball in on his fifth, and McCovey started to go, checked,
- 32:16fell out of there, and hit strike two.
- 32:18McCovey, Bonds, and Kingman.
- 32:22The Giants are really going to score some runs in the heart of this batting order with Henderson, McCovey, Bonds, Kingman, Healy.
- 32:27Mays and Pointy's leading off.
- 32:29It's going to be a pleasure to watch, and you can watch them starting next Friday night at Candlestick.
- 32:33Pitch outside for a ball, one and two.
- 32:35Big weekend at Candlestick, Friday night against Houston, Saturday afternoon, and then a bat day on Sunday.
- 32:43All youngsters 14 and under.
- 32:45You see a free little eek.
- 32:46That's autographed by Giants players when you enter the ballpark.
- 32:49That is this Sunday.
- 32:51One-two pitch to McCovey.
- 32:53Inside and low for two and two.
- 32:55Durker with a good fastball, good breaking pitches.
- 32:59He is difficult.
- 33:00You can't sit on the fastball all the time, because once he gets you looking for the fastball,
- 33:03he puts the slider curveball in there, and you're in trouble.
- 33:06You're in trouble even if he doesn't, with the fastball that he has.
- 33:10Two and two count to McCovey, leading off the Giants, fifth inning, a nothing-nothing ballgame.
- 33:16And Durker is one for the two-two pitch.
- 33:18Ball three, tried to jam him with the fastball again, but got it inside a bit too much that time.
- 33:23And McCovey has a full count of three and two.
- 33:26Giants without a baseman over the first four innings.
- 33:28Helms and Metzger each making good plays to keep the Giants off the bases.
- 33:37Helms made two better than average plays.
- 33:41Three-two count to McCovey.
- 33:45And Durker winds for the full-count pitch.
- 33:48A high chopper at foul that was off his foot.
- 33:51Off his foot or off the catcher, I don't know.
- 33:54I think it probably hit something behind the plate anyway, other than the ground or the plate.
- 34:00And the count stays at three and two.
- 34:03Joey Amalfadano giving McCovey lots of room.
- 34:06He is well behind the first base.
- 34:08Kosting back's almost in the Houston dugout.
- 34:11The dugout is the safest place to be unless they let you wear catcher's equipment.
- 34:17Three-two pitch foul back.
- 34:19And a fastball inside again.
- 34:21Trying to run that fastball in tight on McCovey and get it up high in the strike zone.
- 34:30After four innings, the Dodgers three Atlanta nothing.
- 34:32After five innings, the bottom of the sixth, Philadelphia has tied St. Louis at three and three.
- 34:37In the American League, Baltimore leads the Yankees three to nothing after seven.
- 34:40Cleveland beat Boston four to nothing.
- 34:46Three and two to McCovey leading off the Giants fifth, a nothing-nothing ballgame here in Houston.
- 34:50Three-two pitch, a let-up high ball four.
- 34:52The Giants have their first base runner.
- 34:54McCovey draws a base on balls.
- 34:56Dirkert gets his first strikeout and his first walk back to back.
- 35:01The strikeout to end the fourth, the walk to open the fifth.
- 35:04Paying taxes is never easy, but with a Bank of America card you can get the money when you need it.
- 35:08Bank of America card.
- 35:10Think of it as money, tax money.
- 35:14Bring a chill to your spine when you think of that.
- 35:21Bobby Bonds flying to center his first time on base all five times last night.
- 35:27Dirkert pitching from the stretch for the first time.
- 35:29Down goes Bonds.
- 35:30Boy, he ripped that fastball right under Bobby's chin, ball one.
- 35:34McCovey at first, nobody up.
- 35:36Giants and Houston nothing-nothing top of the fifth.
- 35:39The Giants leave here tonight, go to San Diego.
- 35:43For Tuesday night, Wednesday night, and Thursday night.
- 35:47And then back home for the home opener at beautiful new Candlestick Park on Friday night.
- 35:521-0 pitch to Bonds.
- 35:53Drive to right field.
- 35:54Wynn chasing this one down, going towards the line.
- 35:56He'll get there, makes the catch.
- 35:58McCovey had gone halfway and gets back in the first base.
- 36:00Bonds just didn't quite hit behind that one far enough.
- 36:03He hit behind the ball all right, but Wynn was able to get over it and makes the catch.
- 36:08For the first out, McCovey had to retreat the first.
- 36:10Today's game being brought to you by Standard Stations and Independent Chevron Dealers.
- 36:14Bank of America, all-state insurance company.
- 36:18Dave Kingman, 0-1.
- 36:24He flied to center his first time.
- 36:27Dirkert, McCovey leading at first.
- 36:29May plays behind him, not holding.
- 36:31McCovey on line, drives down the left field line.
- 36:32It is in for the base.
- 36:34McCovey goes to second.
- 36:35He'll round second and head for third.
- 36:37The throw coming into third.
- 36:38He's going to be out at third base.
- 36:41Watson from the corner and left field with a perfect throw to Raider and McCovey trying for third.
- 36:48Kingman moved up to second, but it will just be a single for Kingman.
- 37:01It's a single for Kingman.
- 37:04They flashed a double up on the board for Kingman because he is on at second base,
- 37:08but you can't give him a double because McCovey, the runner in front of him, didn't advance to third.
- 37:12He was thrown out at third.
- 37:13So it's only a single for Kingman.
- 37:15And McCovey cut down from the left fielder to the third baseman.
- 37:20Kingman breaks the no-hit string by Larry Dirkert with a base hit here.
- 37:24And McCovey cut down by an excellent throw.
- 37:26We've seen some fine throwing in this series.
- 37:29Hitch is lower to Fran Healy for a ball.
- 37:31Unusual in the fact that the players were off so long,
- 37:34you would not think that their arms would be ready after the layoff.
- 37:38But Henderson threw out a runner at the plate.
- 37:39Padano threw out a runner at third.
- 37:41And now Watson has thrown out a runner at third.
- 37:43And Watson is a fellow not expected to have that good an arm.
- 37:48He is not rated as having one of the finer throwing arms.
- 37:53Kingman leads at second as Healy takes the breaking pitch up high for a ball.
- 37:57You know, we make a lot about Kingman's quick actions at third base,
- 38:01the fact that he is six feet six inches.
- 38:03But the way big men are moving in basketball now,
- 38:06it's probably going to see a lot more big men in the infield of baseball
- 38:11because they have the quick action.
- 38:13Two-o pitch is low for a ball.
- 38:15Three-and-oh, how would you like to have an infield with Thurman and Chamberlain and Jafar?
- 38:20You'd have to have a homerun to get it out of the infield.
- 38:26Of course, I don't know how they hit.
- 38:27They'd have a fabulous strike zone, wouldn't they?
- 38:32Three-and-oh count to Healy.
- 38:33First base open, Kingman at second.
- 38:35Top of the fifth, nothing-nothing.
- 38:36Dave with the first hit of the ball, game for the Giants.
- 38:39Three-o pitch is high, ball four.
- 38:40Dirkker gave him an off-speed pitch on three-and-oh.
- 38:43He was not really worried about first base, putting Healy on there.
- 38:49The first base open and Spire up.
- 38:50He doesn't expect Spire to hit the ball out.
- 38:53He had a chance of hitting it out.
- 38:57The walk is the second by Dirkker, and Spire looking for his first base hit of the season.
- 39:03Switch batting this year and batting left-handed.
- 39:06Kingman at second, Healy at first.
- 39:08Pitch in the dirt, blocked by Edwards.
- 39:10Good save, and it's ball one.
- 39:11And Dirkker looks as though he might be tiring here in this fifth inning.
- 39:16He certainly hasn't had to throw too many pitches up to this inning.
- 39:19The Giants, in fact, he had retired the first five men on only six pitches.
- 39:27Gadfield, only medium deep against Spire and slightly to the left.
- 39:32Kingman at second with good speed.
- 39:33Healy with fair speed at first.
- 39:35Healy gets the big lead, so does Kingman.
- 39:37Base, oh no, off the leg of Dirkker.
- 39:39Spire digging for first.
- 39:41He's in, and they're safe all the way around.
- 39:43That was a base hit up the middle, but it hit Dirkker on the leg and rolled over to May at first base.
- 39:48And Dirkker is injured.
- 39:50That was a shot up the middle.
- 39:52It hit Dirkker on the shin, his left shin, kicked directly over to Lee May.
- 39:56May made a dive for the ball before he could get up and get back to first.
- 39:59Spire had it beaten out for a base hit.
- 40:01But Dirkker's leg keeps the Giants from scoring a run.
- 40:05As Kingman went to third and had to hold, Healy is at second base, and Spire is at first.
- 40:11Dirkker seems to be all right now.
- 40:13He may throw one or two to see if his leg is okay, but he doesn't appear to be in any pain.
- 40:19That hit him right on the shin and bounded directly to May.
- 40:23Kingman would have scored had it not bounded directly at an infield.
- 40:28As it was, Spire barely beat May to the first base bag.
- 40:32And now John Cumberland, the pitcher, will be the batter.
- 40:36Dirkker defends the Giants with his shin bone.
- 40:41Kingman at third, Healy at second, and Spire at first.
- 40:45That ball appeared today right back to the middle.
- 40:47I didn't think there was no way Dirkker was going to get his glove on the ball.
- 40:50He got his leg on it.
- 40:52Pitch to Cumberland, his low for a ball, one and all.
- 40:55John grounded out to short.
- 40:57Cumberland not a total loss at the plate with a bat, and as Bill mentioned,
- 41:00he was hitting the ball pretty hard this spring, batting right-handed, even though he pitches left-handed.
- 41:05Spire leads at first, Healy from second, Kingman from third.
- 41:09Fouled away, and Cumberland is upset with himself.
- 41:12He got a slider out over the plate and fouled it off.
- 41:16That's about as good a pitch as he's probably going to get the hit of us, Dirkker.
- 41:20Between the belt and the letters and right out over the middle of the plate.
- 41:23McDowell drove in a run to help himself.
- 41:28In last night's game, Cumberland could get the Giants off in front of this one with a base hit.
- 41:34Either a base hit by Cumberland or a Houston mistake.
- 41:40One-on-one count to Cumberland, two down.
- 41:43Swing and a miss, and it's one and two.
- 41:50H-Card now with two hits. The Giants have their two hits in this inning.
- 41:57Now the fact that McCovey was thrown out of third base becomes a very big play.
- 42:07Dirkker winds the one-two pitch.
- 42:09Line down the right field line, but it is going to be a foul at all.
- 42:13Oh, with that it created some confusion.
- 42:15Cumberland was just a little bit too far behind on that one.
- 42:19As they drove it down the right field line, it hit in the seat.
- 42:22The seat's jut out only about five feet from the line.
- 42:28Cumberland almost dropped that one in there.
- 42:30That would have been a passing shot down the line that would have scored at least two and probably three.
- 42:41Dirkker gets a chance to take a deep breath,
- 42:43and Cumberland comes back mumbling about the fates that prevented Allen from being a fair ball.
- 42:55Base is loaded. Top of the fifth, two out.
- 42:58Dirkker's one-two pitch to Cumberland.
- 43:00They hit up the middle.
- 43:02Coming in to score is Kingman.
- 43:03Coming around third is Healy.
- 43:04The throw comes for the plate.
- 43:06It will not be in time.
- 43:07Healy scores and the Giants lead it two to nothing.
- 43:10They're hanging in their tubs and drill the single to center to put the Giants out in front two to nothing.
- 43:17Kingman is becoming one of the Giants' cheerleaders.
- 43:21Each time that he is headed for home plate, he is doing patty cake.
- 43:27He applauds the action as he crosses home plate.
- 43:31Well, it's good to see enthusiasm like that,
- 43:33and I hope you'll be out to join us Friday night at Candlepick to see that enthusiasm.
- 43:37Willie Mays up here now. Spire stopped at second base.
- 43:42Cumberland is at first. Two runs in. The Giants lead two to nothing.
- 43:45Mays robbed of a base hit he had last time. He is 0 for 2.
- 43:47He looks for his first base hit. No, he has one hit this season and an RBI.
- 43:51Hitches up high for a ball. Drove in a run in the first game.
- 43:541-0 count to Mays.
- 43:56Cumberland at first.
- 43:58Gioia Malvatano talking to him.
- 43:59Mays, the first baseman playing back deep so Cumberland can get a pretty good sized lead.
- 44:04Helms playing over fairly near second will keep Spire pretty close.
- 44:07Swing and a foul, Mays.
- 44:10More interested in catching his batting home at that time as he fouls the ball off.
- 44:14Funny stuff, I from under batting him.
- 44:16A bat was a slider away from Willie. He wasn't going to be able to pull that ball.
- 44:20He was going to have to go to right field with it, and he was trying to pull it and foul it off.
- 44:24Giving Mays all the right field line as Wynn plays almost 90 feet off the line.
- 44:30Count of a ball and a strike.
- 44:31Giants in front 2-0 as Cumberland singles drives in two.
- 44:34Mays bonds at the third and Rader will tag third if the Giants are retired on the force out.
- 44:40Giants send seven men to the plate for two runs on three hits.
- 44:45No errors and leaves two men stranded.
- 44:47We go to the bottom of the fifth and it's San Francisco 2-0 Houston.
- 44:51John Cumberland who's driven in the two runs of this ball game to give himself a 2-0 lead.
- 44:56He's out of the mound.
- 44:59Want to say hello to, let me tell them to get my picture taken, I'll take the glasses off.
- 45:06Want to pass along happy birthday which is to Kathy Albrecht.
- 45:11Her dad Ben from Langendorf is here visiting us in the booth tonight.
- 45:15Line drive to center field off the bat of Bob Watson in for a base at Mays.
- 45:19He fielded on one off and throws in.
- 45:22And that is hit number three for the Astros, they open up with a single.
- 45:31Doug Rader will be the batter now.
- 45:35Kathy is 17 and a Giants fan.
- 45:37So far this has been a pretty good year to be a Giants fan.
- 45:41Right hand batting Rader against Cumberland.
- 45:43Pitch is hit deep to left center, that one's got a chance and it is gone.
- 45:49Cumberland didn't wait too long after driving in the Giants two runs.
- 46:04He serves up a home run and a single here and it's all tied up at two and two.
- 46:11This stadium last year gave up only 45 home runs.
- 46:15Cumberland now working to Tommy Helms, it takes one in the dirt for a ball.
- 46:21So far the Giants have hit three home runs in this series and Houston has had three home runs.
- 46:31So there have been six home runs hit in the first three games with the third one not over yet.
- 46:35Helms lines one to right center field, Bonds on the move, he's got it.
- 46:39Fine running catch by Bobby Bonds but they're keying off on Cumberland here in the bottom of the fifth.
- 46:46There's nothing like the excitement of Major League Baseball and there's no other car quite like the 72 Monte Carlo by Chevrolet.
- 46:52The agility of a sporty car, the ride and comfort of a luxury car.
- 46:55Chevrolet wants your new Monte Carlo to be the best car you ever owned.
- 47:01Suddenly we get some action in this one.
- 47:05There had been action all defense up until the fifth inning.
- 47:08The Giants scored twice and now Houston is tired of those left-hand batting Johnny Edwards.
- 47:12Takes inside for a ball. One down, two in.
- 47:15Steve Stone starts throwing in the Giants, both in.
- 47:201-0 pitch, Edwards piles it off and it's 1-1.
- 47:22This has been quite a fifth inning for Cumberland.
- 47:24He drives in two with a single and then is greeted by a solid single and a home run.
- 47:29Each club with a runner thrown out on the bases may have erased an even bigger inning.
- 47:371-1 pitch, swung on amidst a high flat ball.
- 47:40Of course you can't tell, but Wynn was on base, at second base with Watson up and then was picked up,
- 47:45dragging the delayed steal.
- 47:47Watson leads off the next inning with a single and Raider hits the home run.
- 47:511-2 pitch, curveball lined to center.
- 47:54Mays is there waiting, two men are down.
- 47:59And Larry Dirkker will be the batter.
- 48:04Well this is something that certainly can happen a lot early in the season.
- 48:08The pitcher, Cumberland and Dirkker, both doing along well in command until the fifth inning,
- 48:13but the pitcher can come apart very quickly after not having been on the mound for a long time.
- 48:18Neither Dirkker nor Cumberland, of course, has seen any pitching duty for quite a while.
- 48:22First pitch, bounding ball to 20.
- 48:24Second hop, closed to first, side retires.
- 48:27And here in the fifth, two runs, two hits, no errors, and no one left on.
- 48:33At the end of five, the score, the Giants two and Houston two.
- 48:38Change the oil regularly.
- 48:40And if you have any doubt as to how often that should be, stop in at any one of the 20.
- 48:45After three innings, the Dodgers three, Atlanta nothing.
- 48:49That's, they're a little behind him, that's a correction.
- 48:53Well they had it up here three to nothing all the way, it's in the bottom of the fifth inning now.
- 48:57Atlanta batting, LA leading three to nothing.
- 49:00Top of the sixth inning, Ceto 20 leads off against Dirkker, batting left handed, line drive, base hit, left field.
- 49:05Going over is Watson, fields and throws into second.
- 49:08Ceto with a big wide turn, goes back to first.
- 49:13First they couldn't buy a base hit.
- 49:17Now each club has four.
- 49:22And Kenny Henderson, who has lined out and struck out, is the batter.
- 49:29Another switch batter, batting left handed against Dirkker with 20, lead at first base.
- 49:36Spect, a look, and the pitch to Henderson.
- 49:40High for a ball, one and oh.
- 49:52Out of one and oh.
- 49:54Greater, even with the bag at third and playing about 15 feet off the line, the rest of the infield short, but a throw to first, 20 is back in.
- 49:59The outfield has to play Henderson deep.
- 50:02The infield short and for the double play, so it gives Kenny a little more leeway in case he happens to drop one in between them.
- 50:07A throw to first and 20 is a gamut back.
- 50:11This outfield not quite as big to cover as it used to be, but there's a lot of territory here.
- 50:15330 down the line, 378 to left and right center, and 400 straight away center.
- 50:19Henderson takes low for a ball.
- 50:29Count two balls, no strike, Kenny Henderson batting, nobody down, 20 is at first.
- 50:37Dirkker looks at Tito, inching away from first base, the pitch is high to Henderson from all three.
- 50:43Dirkker may, as we mentioned last inning, tired there, he looks like he's struggling a bit now.
- 50:50I don't imagine Harry Walker or Jim Owens will waste too much time, and they don't.
- 50:54Jim Ray is going to hustle down to start loosening up for Houston.
- 51:06Outfield, backed up even deeper now, with a three and oh count to Henderson.
- 51:11Three oh pitch, that's a strike at the knees, he didn't put it right down the middle.
- 51:16He hit it about knee high again, of course there was very little chance that Kenny was going to be swinging
- 51:22at that three oh pitch with McCovey due up next.
- 51:2620 away from first, nobody down, three one count, stretch for the pitch.
- 51:32There goes 20, the pitch is grounded slowly, foul.
- 51:36Tito running, and he will go back to first base, it's a full count on Henderson.
- 51:41Charlie Fox is certainly not afraid to send the Giants running, even though McCovey is waiting his turn on deck.
- 51:50In fact, if you can get those infielders moving around, you get a chance of getting a ball through the infield,
- 51:55and that is Charlie's strategy here.
- 51:5720 is with good speed, Tito might be able to steal it anyway.
- 52:07Deeper in the stretch for the three two pitch.
- 52:0920 goes again, the pitch is popped up, playable, foul, and Tito will get back to first base.
- 52:14May coming in under this one and makes the cut, Henderson retired as 20 goes back to first.
- 52:20Darrell Evans is homered with a man on in the fifth for Atlanta.
- 52:24They've narrowed the gap to at least three to two against the Dodgers.
- 52:28Who's pitching for the Dodgers tonight?
- 52:31Bill Singer is pitching for the Dodgers.
- 52:34Willie McCovey, grounded out and walks.
- 52:38One is at first with one down, the Giants and Astros tied at two and two.
- 52:42Bobby Bonds on deck, we're in the top of the sixth, each club with four hits.
- 52:48Dirkker and Cumberland dueling tonight.
- 52:51Big out there, got behind on Henderson three and oh and got him.
- 52:55Line drive base hit right field, 20s may try for third, went up with the ball, Tito's going for third.
- 53:00A throw across the diamond will be cut off and 20s is in at third base.
- 53:06McCovey really hung out a rope on a line drive single to right.
- 53:1120s went to third, McCovey at first and Bobby Bonds will be the batter.
- 53:16As I mentioned, big out for Dirkker was getting Henderson after being behind three and oh.
- 53:23Now he has to face Bobby Bonds.
- 53:26Edwards has gone out to talk to Dirkker.
- 53:28Lee May looks over at the dugout.
- 53:30Harry Walker might be telling May to stall for some time so Jim Ray can get ready.
- 53:37Now May motions that he will play halfway, it means he'll play behind McCovey at first base.
- 53:42He will not stand at the back.
- 53:43Lee plays at third, McCovey at first, Bonds the batter.
- 53:48Bonds has lined up and flied up.
- 53:53Door tight two and two, the Giants out hitting after is now five to four, Dirkker a bit uncertain.
- 53:59Looking in for the sign, now up into the stretch as McCovey gets his lead at first and 20s away from third.
- 54:04The pitch to Bonds, swung unbounded to third base.
- 54:06Rader goes to the plate and they've got Tito in a run down.
- 54:09Tito goes to third, Rader misses the tag, no he tagged it, he missed the tag but 20s stepped outside of the baseline.
- 54:15And Tito throws his batting helmet and Tito is thrown out of the game by Chris Pellicutis.
- 54:23Pellicutis said that 20s was out of the baseline as he jumped away from Rader's tag.
- 54:28Pellicutis was right there and said that he stepped out of the line, the base pass.
- 54:3420s threw his batting helmet and that quickly Pellicutis threw 20s.
- 54:39So the Giants now have McCovey at second, Bonds at first, 20s in the clubhouse and Kingman at the plate.
- 54:48That is a fielder's choice, went from five to two to five.
- 54:54And Tito is out of the ballgame.
- 55:03Bonds at first, McCovey at second.
- 55:06That is the only play that Tito has.
- 55:09He has to break for the plate on that ball because there was double play possibility.
- 55:12Tito has to go for the plate to break up the double play.
- 55:18And he almost got back safely to third.
- 55:21Dave Kingman up here now, one for two, flat out and single.
- 55:25Fouled it away, strike one.
- 55:27Dave Kingman had a rip at that, fouled it off, and it's an 0-1 count.
- 55:37So the double play goes from Rader to Edwards to Rader to Pellicutis.
- 55:43Tito was thrown out twice on one play.
- 55:47One strike pitch, Bounds up there, blocked by Edwards, good save.
- 55:51McCovey holds at second and Bonds at first.
- 55:55Dirk is really struggling here and getting a couple of breaks that have helped bail him out.
- 56:04Been able to...
- 56:08Pellicutis, I'm almost certain, threw him out.
- 56:11Tito is still in the dugout, as Bill Thompson says, but I thought that Pellicutis threw him out.
- 56:15Swing and an F-strike, too. Maybe he didn't.
- 56:17Maybe he just motioned her out, but he sure went with the right arm when Tito threw the batting oven.
- 56:23Had he Tito, I didn't understand him.
- 56:28One and two counts at Kingman. Two down, two on, Giants and Astros tied at two and two, top of the sixth.
- 56:36I feel really deep and around to the left for Kingman.
- 56:40Zirker's pitch, high for a ball that's two and two.
- 56:46Zirker might be pitching his last inning here.
- 56:51He was not scheduled that. He was made to last out in the last inning, but as much as he's been struggling,
- 56:57it might be a fact that he would be gone from the game if he gets out of this inning.
- 57:04A copy away from second, Bonds from first, the pitch to Kingman.
- 57:07Popped up.
- 57:09That should be it. It's Lee May, the first baseman, waits for this one.
- 57:12Makes the catch and Zirker does get out of the inning.
- 57:15No runs, two hits, no errors, and two runners left on.
- 57:20And at the end of five and a half, the score is the Giants two and Houston two.
- 57:29Top of the order for Houston against Cumberland, Metzger, Cedeno, and Winn in the bottom of the sixth.
- 57:35Metzger bluffs the Bunt, takes a strike, going one.
- 57:40Remind you that Friday night is opening night at Candlestick Park.
- 57:46Steve Stone starts to work in the Giant Bullpen.
- 57:48Again, line drive down the right field line is foul, and it's strike two.
- 57:55More than 50 Ticketron locations, including all Sears, Montgomery Ward, and Emporium stores in Northern California,
- 58:02for information on the Ticketron locations where you can purchase tickets for any Giant home game.
- 58:07Area code 415, and the number to call is 563-4622.
- 58:11You can also get checks by mail order by mailing the Giant ticket office at Candlestick Park.
- 58:16Pitch to Metzger, fastball just inside, good pitch.
- 58:20One and two, zip code for Candlestick Park in San Francisco, 94124.
- 58:26Box seats are four and a half, reserve seats three and a half.
- 58:30Pitch low, ball two, two and two.
- 58:33Door tight here at two of feet.
- 58:35We're in the bottom of the sixth.
- 58:38Cumberland drove in two in the fifth.
- 58:39Raider hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.
- 58:42A two-two pitch to Metzger, high and outside for ball three.
- 58:47Cumberland got in front of Metzger, all in two, now has gone to the end of the string at three and two.
- 58:56His three-two pitch fouled away.
- 58:58Metzger took a late swing at that ball and just tried to chop at it, fouled it off.
- 59:07Metzger to Daniel and win the top of the batting order for Houston in the bottom of the sixth.
- 59:11Two runs five hits, no errors for the Giants.
- 59:13Two runs four hits, no errors for Houston.
- 59:15Ball four, he walked in.
- 59:17Cumberland gives up his first base on balls.
- 59:20He comes to the leadoff batter, and Cedeno is lined out and grounded out, will be the batter.
- 59:25Healy goes out to talk to Cumberland.
- 59:28Speyer comes in to say something to him.
- 59:30Antito, what he's not thrown out of the game, he's in their second base.
- 59:33He comes out there.
- 59:36I thought that Tela Koudis had certainly thrown him out.
- 59:39He made a motion with his arm, but he must have just been being emphatic about the fact that Tito was out of the baseline.
- 59:46Of one, he remains at second base.
- 59:54I hope you will excuse me for not mentioning that Tito was back in there at the start of the inning.
- 1:00:01But he is in the ball game, and he was not thrown out by Tela Koudis.
- 1:00:05Even though Tela Koudis made the emphatic gesture when Tito threw his helmet.
- 1:00:10Ground ball to 20s at second base.
- 1:00:12He will have to go to first.
- 1:00:13They had to hit and run on.
- 1:00:14Metzger was going.
- 1:00:15It was a perfect double play ball except for one thing.
- 1:00:18Metzger was running, and Tito had no chance to feed Speyer for the force out.
- 1:00:22Metzger moves up to second as 20s throws out Cedeno from four to three.
- 1:00:27Now Jim Winn, who's two for two, is up there.
- 1:00:32Winn is single to left and single to right.
- 1:00:36Score tied at two and two, bottom of the sixth.
- 1:00:45Cumberland doing a long look at the sign.
- 1:00:47Now takes his stretch.
- 1:00:49His pitch high for a ball, one and oh.
- 1:00:54Winn and then Lee May.
- 1:01:01Metzger is in the outfield very deep for a win.
- 1:01:04Metzger getting a lead.
- 1:01:0520s playing over close to second.
- 1:01:06They might try to pick Metzger off.
- 1:01:08The pitch to Winn is outside for a ball, two and oh.
- 1:01:17Two and nothing count to Winn.
- 1:01:21Metzger moves away from second base.
- 1:01:23Cumberland glances back, comes to the plate.
- 1:01:25Winn grounds one to the left side.
- 1:01:26Throw Kingman into left field.
- 1:01:28As he went to his left, he couldn't feel it.
- 1:01:30He's going to third and oh, now Henderson comes running into the infield with the ball.
- 1:01:33As he started to throw, Winn bluffed for second.
- 1:01:35Metzger had to go to third.
- 1:01:37He went back to second because Kingman going to his left to field that ball.
- 1:01:40Metzger didn't know whether it would go through.
- 1:01:42It did go through for a face-in.
- 1:01:45Metzger wound up at third.
- 1:01:50Winn is safe at first.
- 1:01:53His third hit, Charlie Fox comes out to talk.
- 1:01:57Steve Stone has been throwing the bullpen.
- 1:02:00It might be all for Cumberland with the right-hand batting Lee May up here,
- 1:02:02although he has flat out swiped against Cumberland.
- 1:02:06The Fox decides to make a change or stays with Cumberland.
- 1:02:09That was a bullet to the left side.
- 1:02:11Kingman, do or you don't, going to his left.
- 1:02:13The ball was by him in the left field.
- 1:02:16But Metzger could not score because he headed back for second
- 1:02:18as Kingman was moving towards second base to try to field the ball.
- 1:02:21Fox will stay with Cumberland in this spot.
- 1:02:24The Giants needing a double play ball here.
- 1:02:31May is the big man now with runners at first and third and only one out.
- 1:02:39Metzger at third.
- 1:02:41Winn at first.
- 1:02:43Cumberland pitching to the powerful Lee May.
- 1:02:47John takes the stretch, his pitch to May outside for a ball.
- 1:02:51A crucial spot here.
- 1:02:55The Giants have turned over double plays.
- 1:02:57Behind Melch, out of the bases loaded, they got one in the first game.
- 1:03:01Now they could use one with runners at first and third and one down.
- 1:03:05High ball two.
- 1:03:08Cumberland behind two and O to Lee May.
- 1:03:11Baltimore has defeated the Yankees, four to nothing.
- 1:03:18Winn leads from first, Metzger from third.
- 1:03:21A two-O pitch, top foul out of play and it's two and one.
- 1:03:28Each club with five hits.
- 1:03:34Metzger getting a fair size lead at third as Kingman is playing deep.
- 1:03:38Line drive base hit, left field.
- 1:03:39Going over to Phelan as Henderson.
- 1:03:41Winn will hold it second as Henderson throws in Metzger's score.
- 1:03:45And Houston leads it by a score of three to two.
- 1:03:52That may be all for Cumberland now as Fox is up on top of the digout steps.
- 1:03:57And here comes Charlie and that will be all for Cumberland.
- 1:04:00Steve Stone will be the Giants pitcher now.
- 1:04:06Cumberland runs into trouble here in the sixth inning.
- 1:04:10So we mentioned about running before.
- 1:04:15In this inning, the Astros set up the inning by having Metzger run.
- 1:04:21Because Sadano had a perfect double play ball, but with Metzger running on the pitch,
- 1:04:25he was able to get to second.
- 1:04:27Before the Giants could try for the double play, they got the one out.
- 1:04:31Rather than erasing two, they got just one.
- 1:04:33And Winn and May following with singles.
- 1:04:38Getting a run and sending Cumberland to the showers.
- 1:04:46It was not an unimpressive performance by Cumberland, however.
- 1:04:49He fits very well.
- 1:04:51Ran into difficulty here in this sixth inning.
- 1:04:55Had he been pitching in either of the first two games, he would be ahead.
- 1:05:02Steve Stone will make his first appearance of 1972.
- 1:05:06Cumberland goes five in a third inning.
- 1:05:10He's given up three runs, is responsible for two runners on there.
- 1:05:14In touch for six hits. He didn't strike out anyone.
- 1:05:17He walked one batter.
- 1:05:20Stone will be pitching to Bob Watson with one down and two on.
- 1:05:33Stone had a brilliant spring last year and started out all right with the Giants.
- 1:05:38Rounded up with a five and nine record.
- 1:05:40Lost his confidence in the middle of the year and didn't go too much to his fastballs.
- 1:05:48Tough year for the young man last year because, as I say, he had a real good spring and a fine start.
- 1:05:56Had a couple of shutouts. Shutout the Pittsburgh Pirates, two to nothing.
- 1:06:03Can do that.
- 1:06:06He had to do a pretty good job.
- 1:06:10He threw the ball very good this spring.
- 1:06:15And now he is out here working really.
- 1:06:19This year we will be awarding to the Giants Player of the Week each week.
- 1:06:2717-jewel Rico men's wristwatch.
- 1:06:30All Rico wristwatches have the day and date.
- 1:06:35Shock resistant, water resistant.
- 1:06:37So each week we will be awarding a Rico watch to the Giants Player of the Week.
- 1:06:45Now ready to go. Stone pitches to Bob Watson. Runners at first and second.
- 1:06:49A broken bat base hit to right field.
- 1:06:51Coming in to score is Wynn going to third.
- 1:06:54And in at third base is May as Watson hits the first hit.
- 1:06:58And I believe he broke his bat on that one, but he got it through the right side for a base hit and it's four to two.
- 1:07:05Seven hits for the Astros now. That one just swiped by McCovey.
- 1:07:12And Doug Rader hit a two-run homer his first time.
- 1:07:17Second time up tonight.
- 1:07:19Last time at bat. We'll be up here.
- 1:07:21Ron Bryant and Jerry Johnson throwing the bullpen to the Giants.
- 1:07:26On the bottom of the sixth. Runners at first and third.
- 1:07:29Stone delivers to Rader. Breaking pitch high and outside for a ball. One and oh.
- 1:07:38Here's standing in front for the first time. Four to two.
- 1:07:45Stone's stretched. The pitch to Rader. High fuss ball for a ball. Two and oh.
- 1:07:50And this was Steve's problem last year. Getting behind on the hitters. His control.
- 1:07:55He has good stuff. If he can get out in front of it, he's got a chance.
- 1:08:01He's behind two balls, no strikes. He didn't have too much of a chance to get out in front of Watson.
- 1:08:04Watson hits the first pitch.
- 1:08:07Drop up on the infield. Plotty's going back to short right to make the catch.
- 1:08:11The runners will hold. And Rader pops up for the second out.
- 1:08:17That'll bring on Tommy Helms. We'll pause for station identification.
- 1:08:20That's the Golden West Radio Network.
- 1:08:21When you want to hear the sounds of the city, listen to the Terry McGovern Show.
- 1:08:25Four to eight right here on KSFO in San Francisco. It's the sound of the city.
- 1:08:38Tommy Helms batting with runners at first and third. Jim Ray starts to throw on the bullpen again for Houston.
- 1:08:43Stone lobs the throw to first.
- 1:08:48Helms, the seventh man to bat in the inning as Houston has scored twice to take a four to two lead.
- 1:08:52The pitch to Helms. Line foul to the right. Look out. Strike one.
- 1:08:58Steve getting his pitches up here and Helms was behind on that pitch.
- 1:09:02He got it by him, but it was still up where he hit it solidly, but he fortunately hit it foul.
- 1:09:09May at third. Watson at first.
- 1:09:13Two men down. Stone and relief for starter John Cumberland.
- 1:09:17Peer ball bounded to short. Big hop is fired. Throws behind him to 20s covering and the side is retired.
- 1:09:23In the sixth. Two runs on three hits. No errors and two runners left on.
- 1:09:31And at the end of sixth, the score is Houston four and the Giants two.
- 1:09:36The city. Well, we mentioned about Tito 20s. We thought he'd been thrown out by Chris Palakoutis.
- 1:09:40And they ruled with change that a player is not automatically ejected if he throws his batting helmet.
- 1:09:45But the Empire can find the player. And that is apparently what happened.
- 1:09:49Chris Palakoutis will recommend a gift that has to be a recommendation to the league office.
- 1:09:53He defined a hundred dollars for throwing his helmet, but he stayed in the game.
- 1:09:56Seven-penning. Here's Biltzoff.
- 1:09:58Fran Healy leading off for the Giants. Takes a breaking ball inside ball one.
- 1:10:02Chris Spire in the on deck circle and a pitching spot due to bat third.
- 1:10:07Jim Ray continues to throw in the bullpen for Houston as Larry Jerker comes to the plate one-oh.
- 1:10:12Slider good on the outside corner. A one-one count.
- 1:10:22Astros defense around to the left. Godfield backed up. Jerkers one-one pitch.
- 1:10:27Line drive. Base hit. Right field. Over to field at one.
- 1:10:31Healy turns it first and holds it a single edge.
- 1:10:34Fran Healy gets a solid base hit to right field to open up the top of the seventh.
- 1:10:38Chris Spire will be the batter.

- 1:20:15Left-hander against left-hander.
- 1:20:17Bryant into motion, kicks and throws.
- 1:20:19Call strike three, a fast ball right down the middle.
- 1:20:24Bryant strikes out the first man he picks.
- 1:20:26That's the first strike out for the Giants pitchers in the blog, eh?
- 1:20:33Dirkert will leave the contest after going seven innings.
- 1:20:40Jim Stewart will be a pinch batter.
- 1:20:42Report is that Dirkert told manager Harry Walker that he was tiring,

- 1:23:11a four-run on two hits and struck out three, will face 20, Henderson and McCovey,
- 1:23:16Dirkert with his shoulder tightening up, went seven innings, allowed two runs on six hits.
- 1:23:22Right-hander Jim Ray against Tito, who has one hit and three drives.
- 1:23:2726, a fast ball up the knee, strike one.
- 1:23:32Kenny Anderson said that Ray turns the ball over a bit every once in a while.
- 1:23:35He threw a curve ball and screw ball.
- 1:23:37Pretty good fast ball.
- 1:23:39Two hits, grounded to first base.
- 1:23:41May has it on an easy chance, steps on first out number one.
- 1:23:47One man down, Henderson is 0 for 3 tonight.
- 1:23:54Kenny had a tough night at the plate last night after getting two hits in the opener,
- 1:23:58batting left-handed against Ray.
- 1:24:01Ray struck Kenny out in the fourth inning yesterday.
- 1:24:06The ball got away from the catcher on a wild pitch and the Giants got a run on it.
- 1:24:12Henderson takes the breaking bits for a strike, going one down, bases empty, top of the eighth,
- 1:24:17the Giants trailed 4-2.
- 1:24:24One strike offering to Henderson, popped up into short center,
- 1:24:27going back to the second baseman, Helm, now it is Metzger, the shortstop,
- 1:24:30and Metzger makes the catch.
- 1:24:32Henderson popped up for the second out.

- 1:24:59In the American League, identical scores, four wins.
- 1:25:01Baltimore beat the Yankees 4-0 and Cleveland beat Boston 4-0.
- 1:25:08A one-strike pitch fouled away and Ray is in front of McCovey, 0-2.
- 1:25:16Four runs, seven hits, no errors for Houston.
- 1:25:18Two runs, six hits, no errors for the Giants.
- 1:25:20The Giants leave immediately after this game for San Diego.
- 1:25:23Tuesday night, Wednesday night, and Thursday night in San Diego,
- 1:25:26and then back home for the Friday night opener at Candlestick Park.
- 1:25:32Ground ball off to the chest of Ray, charging in as Metzger,
- 1:25:35he gets it, throws the first, not in time, McCovey has a base hit.
- 1:25:39That was hit right back through the middle, and it hit off Ray's chest.
- 1:25:45He's all right.
- 1:25:46The infield playing back deep for McCovey, they couldn't get to the ball
- 1:25:49before he'd legged it out for an infield hit.
- 1:25:52And now Bobby Bonds, who's 0-3, will be the batter.
- 1:25:56This would be a good spot for Bobby to break into the home run column this year.
- 1:26:03Brett Gladding starts throwing in the bullpen for Houston.
- 1:26:11Two down and McCovey at first base.
- 1:26:13Ray takes the stretch for the pitch to Bonds.
- 1:26:15Low for a ball, 1-0.
- 1:26:17Yesterday Bonds batted against Ray and singles.
- 1:26:25Giants down by 2, McCovey at first.
- 1:26:29Two men out.
- 1:26:31Jim Ray takes the stretch for the pitch to Bonds.
- 1:26:34It lays off a breaking pitch.
- 1:26:36It's low for ball 2, 2-0.
- 1:26:42Gladding must have fallen in love with one of the writers down here.
- 1:26:45He called him a fat half-blind pitcher.
- 1:26:53Unless Gladding wrote it himself, he'd have to be mad at somebody.
- 1:26:572-0 pitch.
- 1:26:59Ball 3, too low.
- 1:27:02Bonds looks now, Johnny McNamara, the third base coach.
- 1:27:063-0 count to him, McCovey at first.
- 1:27:14Ray delivers 3-0.
- 1:27:17A strike on the inside, 3-1.
- 1:27:19He didn't really pick up much of the strike zone with that one.
- 1:27:243-1 strike count.
- 1:27:26Bonds the batter, McCovey at first.
- 1:27:29Giants down by 2, each club with 7 hits.
- 1:27:32Houston leads 4-2.
- 1:27:333-1 pitch.
- 1:27:35Driven up the middle, Helms backhands it, turns through,
- 1:27:37Demetski got him at second base.
- 1:27:41Helms has made 3 outstanding plays.
- 1:27:44A pack of 10 will keep you in send-off smiles for two whole weeks.

- 1:28:08Your kids will get more than a lunch out of them.
- 1:28:15Ron Bryant, little pitch to the number 2, 3, and 4 spots in the batting order.
- 1:28:21Giants scored two runs in the top of the fifth as Cumberland, single with the bases loaded,
- 1:28:25to drive in two to put San Francisco in front two or nothing.
- 1:28:28But Rader hit a two-run homer off Cumberland in the bottom of the fifth to tie it up.
- 1:28:32And then the Astros scored two more in the sixth.
- 1:28:34That's the way it is now, is we're in the bottom of the eighth inning, 4-2.
- 1:28:37Houston in front of the Giants.
- 1:28:40And Ron Bryant, the third giant pitcher, delivers to Cesar Cedeno, takes a fastball high, ball one.
- 1:28:47Tommy Helms has certainly been the defensive man tonight for Houston.
- 1:28:56Pitcher's a strike at the knees and it's one-and-one.
- 1:29:06Ball on a strike count, one-one pitch, fastball, strike two on the inside.
- 1:29:12Bryant pumping those fastballs in there.
- 1:29:22Out of one and two, fastball cut foul to the right.
- 1:29:26Bryant could make a big difference in this giant pitching staff.
- 1:29:34Bryant is capable of stepping into a starting position or a sometimes starter,
- 1:29:41and as a relief, whatever, if he's capable of pitching the way everybody has predicted he's able to.
- 1:29:46Bounding ball on one hop to Kingman, long throw in timeout number one.
- 1:29:51Bryant can pitch as he has here.
- 1:29:54Of course, nobody can be that perfect all the time, but if he can pitch anywhere close to it,
- 1:29:58then he can make a difference in this giant pitching staff.
- 1:30:01Jim Winn, who is three for three.
- 1:30:07One down, bases empty, four to two, Houston leads in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:30:12Fastball misses for ball one.
- 1:30:15Don't give up.
- 1:30:16If you recall last year, the giants were in eighth and ninth inning ball club.
- 1:30:22They came roaring back.
- 1:30:23Pitch outside for a ball when it's two and oh.
- 1:30:26Healy goes out to talk to Bryant.
- 1:30:31He is behind Winn, two balls and no strike.
- 1:30:38Here's two oh pitch.
- 1:30:40Ball three.
- 1:30:43First time Bryant shows a little weakness as he gets behind Winn, three balls and no strike.
- 1:30:48There was one out and nobody on.
- 1:30:53Locked him on four pitches.
- 1:30:56Bryant gives up his first base on balls.
- 1:30:59Winn has a perfect night and Lee May, who has one hit in three tries, is about it.
- 1:31:05Winn fly to left twice and single to left to drive in a run.
- 1:31:21Bottom of the eighth inning was one down.
- 1:31:23Jim Winn has a big lead at first.
- 1:31:25Bryant's curve goes right on by Healy to the screen and Jim Winn may have pulled up Lane.
- 1:31:30He goes to second.
- 1:31:31He looked as though he might have pulled a muscle.
- 1:31:34I guess he's all right.
- 1:31:35He reached for his hip as he tried to go to second base.
- 1:31:40I guess he's okay.
- 1:31:41That was a curve ball that hit the dirt and bounded back to the screen.
- 1:31:44Winn is on at second base.
- 1:31:46That was a wild pitch charged to Bryant.
- 1:31:50The sooner that brag about wronging, it's in trouble.
- 1:31:56Curve is a strike this time and it's one and one.
- 1:32:00Ball on a strike to Lee May, a runner in scoring position at second with one out.
- 1:32:12Bryant looks back at Winn at second base, one-one pitch, slow curve high for a ball.
- 1:32:17Somebody must have had a home run for the Dodgers, Willie Davis did with a man on in the eighth inning.
- 1:32:23So the Dodgers lead five to two over Atlanta with that top of the eighth still going on.
- 1:32:29Here it's four to two, Houston.
- 1:32:32Bryant behind them, a count two and one to May.
- 1:32:36Slow curve, line drive to center.
- 1:32:37Mays can't get it.
- 1:32:38It's a front and front base hit.
- 1:32:39Coming into score is Winn.
- 1:32:41And May has driven in the fifth run of the ballgame.
- 1:32:48Curve ball out over the plate.
- 1:32:50May has reached out and hit a line drive to center field.
- 1:32:58Making it now five to two ballgame and Bob Watson will be the batter.
- 1:33:06A walk and a wild pitch across Bryant a run.
- 1:33:10May is at first with one out.
- 1:33:12Eight hits now for Houston.
- 1:33:15Bob Watson takes a strike.
- 1:33:17That's all good.
- 1:33:25Giants will have Dave Kingman to lead off the ninth inning.
- 1:33:29They're down by three now and they'll be at the tail end of batting order.
- 1:33:32Fastball inside for a ball and it's one and one.
- 1:33:41May at first base.
- 1:33:42He's driven in two runs tonight.
- 1:33:46Watson is driven in a run.
- 1:33:47He has two hits.
- 1:33:48He has five hits in the last two nights.
- 1:33:49Fastball brushes him back and it's two and one.
- 1:34:00Giants get two runs in the fifth.
- 1:34:01Houston has scored twice in the fifth, twice in the sixth, and once here in the eighth inning.
- 1:34:06May leads away at first base.
- 1:34:09Bryant behind two and one to Watson.
- 1:34:10Two-one pitch popped up foul.
- 1:34:12It will be out of play.
- 1:34:14Count is two and two to the Houston left fielder.
- 1:34:25John Morris and Jim Barr throwing the Giants both in.
- 1:34:32Bryant in the stretch for the two-two pitch.
- 1:34:35On the way to Watson.
- 1:34:36Ball three gets by Haley and going to second is May.
- 1:34:42That will be ruled a passball.
- 1:34:48Haley couldn't hang on to that low inside fastball.
- 1:34:51And it's a passball that moves May into scoring position.
- 1:34:55A three-two count to Watson.
- 1:35:01Houston in front five to two, threatening to add more.
- 1:35:05Bryant trying to stop him here so the Giants will only be down by three going to the top of the ninth.
- 1:35:16Long look by Bryant has the sign.
- 1:35:19May leads away from second base.
- 1:35:21The three-two pitch.
- 1:35:22Swung on and fouled.
- 1:35:23He threw him a breaking pitch on three and two, and Watson just got a piece of it.
- 1:35:30Giants willing to gamble there and almost got away with it because Bryant threw a pretty good curveball.
- 1:35:37Watson was full but just got a piece of it.
- 1:35:43Three-two pitch.
- 1:35:44High passball he walked in.
- 1:35:48Give up his second walk.
- 1:35:50Charlie Fox heads for the mound.
- 1:35:52That may be all for Bryant with the right-hand batting Doug Rader due up here.
- 1:35:55We'll pause for station identification.
- 1:35:57This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 1:35:58When you want to hear the sounds of the city, listen to the Dan Sorkin Show from 10 to 1 right here on KSFO in San Francisco.
- 1:36:05The sound of the city.
- 1:36:15The call has gone to the bullpen for Jim Barr.
- 1:36:20Bryant goes two innings, has allowed a run, has given up, I'll take that he has gone an inning and a third.
- 1:36:36And gives up one run on one hit as responsible for two runners on there struck out two and walked two.
- 1:36:52Jim Barr makes his first appearance of the year.
- 1:36:54Jim was struck on the back of the right hand by a line drive Thursday pitching batting practice.
- 1:37:02But he's able to work, he and Kingman on the same USC Championship Bowl Club in 1970, their NCAA champion.
- 1:37:14Last year Barr was one and one with the Giants, 3.6 to earned run average in 17 games, 35 innings.
- 1:37:20He was six and three with Phoenix.
- 1:37:22Big right-hander.
- 1:37:26He and Don Perithers went to the same high school.
- 1:37:32And Linwood, Barr at 6-3, 2-0-5.
- 1:37:37Pitched to Doug Rader with one out and two on and Houston leading 5-2 in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:37:45The Giants for the first time in danger of losing in this 1972 season.
- 1:37:50Barr to try to get them out.
- 1:37:52The Giants will have a tough task of it in the top of the ninth.
- 1:38:02Rader, the batter with May at second and Watson at first.
- 1:38:10Rader has a home run tonight in three-fifths.
- 1:38:14He tied the score in the fifth with a two-run shot off Cumberland.
- 1:38:18Takes a strike, a breaking pitch good, it's 0-1. Rader wasn't too sure of that.
- 1:38:29Right-hander Jim Barr, the fourth Giant pitcher.
- 1:38:35Outside and low for a ball, it's one and one.
- 1:38:38Cumberland started, he went five and a third.
- 1:38:41Stone went two-thirds.
- 1:38:43Bryant an inning and a third.
- 1:38:45And now Jim Barr in the bottom of the eighth with a run-in, two runners on and one out.
- 1:38:51Look back at second and May, Watson leads from first, a breaking pitch low and outside, ball two.
- 1:38:56Barr behind two and one.
- 1:39:08Outfield straight away and backed up for Rader.
- 1:39:11Good pitch to him, bowled away, good fastball and it's two and two.
- 1:39:16Barr evens the count, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:39:18Two games in the American League.
- 1:39:21Today Cleveland beat Boston four to nothing, Baltimore beat the Yankees four to nothing.
- 1:39:27St. Louis leads Philadelphia five to three going to the bottom of the ninth inning,
- 1:39:31but St. Louis has made three pitching changes in that ninth.
- 1:39:40Dodgers lead five to two over Atlanta, the Dodgers batting in the top of the eighth.
- 1:39:45Count two and two to Rader.
- 1:39:47Runners at first and second with one down and Barr goes into the stretch,
- 1:39:50looks back at May at second base, looks again, comes to the plate, two and two.
- 1:39:54Just a bit low and it's a full count, three and two.
- 1:39:58Not that much speed on the bases, but they might send the runners here.
- 1:40:04Kingman playing back deep at third with Rader up here will have to be alert.
- 1:40:09May might be going now.
- 1:40:11Runners lead, they don't go, three, two, pitch, line drive, they hit, right field,
- 1:40:16that one heading for the wall, Bond can't cut it off, two runs will score,
- 1:40:20and Rader will head for third, he has himself a triple.
- 1:40:34Rader with four RBI's now, those, the three runs in the inning all charged to Bryant,
- 1:40:44and it's a seven to two Houston lead with Rader at third.
- 1:40:52It is Houston tonight getting the long ball.
- 1:40:59As Tommy Helms will be up, the Giants bring the infield in,
- 1:41:02a pitch to Helms, swung on, filed away, strike one.
- 1:41:05Rader went with that pitch and hit a line drive down the right field line,
- 1:41:08Bond's trying to cut it off, couldn't do it, it went all the way to the wall,
- 1:41:12and two runs came in to score on the triple by Rader.
- 1:41:15Far pitching from the windup, the one strike pitch bounded the shortstop,
- 1:41:18Spire will hold Rader at third, throws to first, Helms is retired for the second out.
- 1:41:25And Johnny Edwards will be the batter.
- 1:41:29Now Charlie Fox comes out again, this might be off the bar with the left-hander,
- 1:41:34Johnny Morris throwing the bullpen, it is, Fox is going to go for John Morris.
- 1:41:40This is as good a place as any to bring Morris in to see what he can do.
- 1:41:45Charlie may need him to get a left-hand batter out occasionally,
- 1:41:49or maybe get more than that out, and with the Giants trailing seven to two
- 1:41:54and a left-hand batter up here, might just as well find out what Morris can do.
- 1:41:58In spring draining he showed a fine arm, a good sinking fastball.
- 1:42:04Barr goes to third of an inning, gives up a hit, a triple to Rader, and drives in two runs.
- 1:42:13Things have fallen around the Giants' ears here in this eighth inning,
- 1:42:18and John Morris acquired in a trade with Milwaukee that sent two minor league pitchers to Milwaukee.
- 1:42:25In the spring Morris was a non-roster player, he was on the Phoenix roster,
- 1:42:32and pitched his way onto the ball club.
- 1:42:35John has been around for a while, he doesn't wake up for a two o'clock feeding, he's 30 years old.
- 1:42:47Last year with Milwaukee he won two and lost two.
- 1:42:51His overall Major League record in 1965, 1968, he was with Baltimore.
- 1:42:55Started his baseball career in 1960.
- 1:43:04Six-one, 198 pounds, he lives in Milton, Delaware.
- 1:43:19Chuck, would you like a Delaware punch?
- 1:43:26Johnny Edwards, a left-hand batting catcher, to face the left-hander John Morris in the eighth inning.
- 1:43:34Seven to two, Houston Leeds, outhitting the Giants nine to seven.
- 1:43:37Raiders at third with two men down, and Morris, left-hander delivers to Edwards a fastball high, ball one.
- 1:43:55A one-out pitch, fouled away, and it's one-on-one.
- 1:43:59The Giants are looking for every bit of pitching they can get.
- 1:44:04Charlie Fox, every time somebody goes out there has an eagle eye on him to see if maybe the next man that comes to the mound is going to be the one who is going to be the surprise, or the guy that does the job for him.
- 1:44:17The one-one pitch, swung on and missed that sinking fastball on its one and two.
- 1:44:23A ball and two strikes to count.
- 1:44:25Edwards, the batter, Raider at third.
- 1:44:28Three runs in in this eighth inning, seven to two, Houston Leeds, the Giants.
- 1:44:33Swing and a miss, it gets by Healy, but he picks it up, looks at the runner at third, then throws the first and just gets Edwards.
- 1:44:40Healy must have been crossed up by Morris on that pitch because he walked in with Morris talking to him, but Morris comes in to strike out the left-hander.
- 1:44:48It's three runs on one, two hits.
- 1:44:53No errors, and one runner left on.
- 1:44:55After eight innings, the totals, the Astros seven runs, nine hits, no errors, the Giants two runs, seven hits, and no errors.
- 1:45:08Philadelphia and St. Louis.
- 1:45:12Philadelphia scored a run in the bottom of the ninth, but St. Louis hung on with grim determination to win it five to four.
- 1:45:18The Cardinals five runs, 11 hits, and no errors.
- 1:45:20Philadelphia four runs, nine hits, and one error.
- 1:45:22Santorini the winner, he's one and one.
- 1:45:24Horner the loser, oh and one.
- 1:45:26And a good crowd in Philadelphia, 38,182.
- 1:45:30A large crowd, I don't know if it was a good crowd or not, it might have been the same bunch that's there all the time.
- 1:45:35So 38,000 there.
- 1:45:38After eight innings, the Dodgers led six to two over Atlanta, and now Moda has hit a home run with a man on in the ninth with the Dodgers.
- 1:45:47So they lead at least eight to two.
- 1:45:52The Giants trailed seven to two.
- 1:45:54Top of the ninth, Dave Kingman, Fran Healy, and Chris Spire, the first three to face Jim Ray.
- 1:46:02Trailing by five, nothing the Giants can't handle.
- 1:46:07We'll see if they do.
- 1:46:10Kingman, who has one hit and three trips, and has scored a run, will be the batter.
- 1:46:14He got the first hit of the game for the Giants in the fifth inning.
- 1:46:20Kingman against right-hander Jim Ray.
- 1:46:22Outfield deep into the left infield, backed up.
- 1:46:28Pitch to Kingman, strike.
- 1:46:31Flider on the outside, it's oh and one.
- 1:46:34Watson, barely in the ballpark, the left fielder, he's almost to the warning path in left field.
- 1:46:41One strike count to Kingman.
- 1:46:43Strike two called, another slider, this one caught the inside corner.
- 1:46:50And Ray is quickly in front of Kingman, oh and two.
- 1:46:57Houston right-hander deals off oh and two, outside for a ball.
- 1:47:01Seven runs, nine hits, no errors for Houston.
- 1:47:03Two runs, seven hits, no errors for the Giants.
- 1:47:12Ray's one and two pitch.
- 1:47:14Fly drive to Rader, a ball hit right on the nose, but in the third baseman's glove.
- 1:47:20Kingman hit it on the nose, but he hit it to Rader for out number one.
- 1:47:27And now Fran Healy, the Giants, have just two outs left of them here in the top of the ninth.
- 1:47:38Hits to Healy, it's a strike, oh and one.
- 1:47:40Healy has grounded out, walked and singled.
- 1:47:50Ray's pitch, curve low and wide for one and one.
- 1:47:55Giants go to Houston.
- 1:47:57Carruthers scheduled a pitch for the Giants against Tom Phoebus.
- 1:48:01Go to San Diego, they're in Houston.
- 1:48:03Go to San Diego tomorrow, foul ball back, and it's one and two.
- 1:48:07Tom Phoebus for San Diego and Don Carruthers for the Giants.
- 1:48:11That's tomorrow night.
- 1:48:17Have any idea what time of broadcast time it's just?
- 1:48:20Just when we get there?
- 1:48:25Seven ten.
- 1:48:26Seven ten, broadcast time.
- 1:48:28Bounding ball is short, two easy hops, broken back.
- 1:48:30Metzger throws the first and Healy is retired.
- 1:48:33Two men down and Chris Spire is the Giants' last hope.
- 1:48:37Down by five with two men out, the base is empty.
- 1:48:39Alan Gallagher comes out in the on deck circle to act as a batter in case Spire gets on.
- 1:48:46And most of the Houston fans figure that it's all over and they start heading for the exit.
- 1:48:54Spire bluffs the bunt, takes low for a ball, one and oh.
- 1:49:08One oh pitch, fast ball strike.
- 1:49:11Ball and a strike.
- 1:49:14Yeah, the Giants have to be happy coming in here to Houston and taking the first two games of the series anyway,
- 1:49:19even if they lose this one.
- 1:49:23This has been a place where they've really had trouble winning.
- 1:49:27Strike crawled on Spire, started to swing, tried to check, fell away from the plate,
- 1:49:32and Mel Steiner said he swung at the ball on Spire.
- 1:49:36Question that, but it's still a strike and it's one and two.
- 1:49:39Now the Giants down to their last strike.
- 1:49:44One two pitch, just outside for two and two.
- 1:49:48So with one strike left and five runs behind, what a story this would make.
- 1:49:59Two and two, count to Chris.
- 1:50:02Ball three, full count.
- 1:50:05Three and two.
- 1:50:08The Giants still with a little life there.
- 1:50:20Jim Ray pitching to Chris Spire batting left-handed.
- 1:50:23Three two pitch, struck him out swinging.
- 1:50:25And Ray closes it out.
- 1:50:27No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 1:50:32The Houston's win at seven to two and we'll be back with the final totals in just one minute.
- 1:50:40I'd like to talk to you guys about your wives, about something they might be missing.
- 1:50:43No, don't worry, I'm not going to be a marriage counselor here.
- 1:50:47Drop in a little touch of humor there.
- 1:50:49I just want to remind you that your wife may not have a Bank of Merit card of her own.
- 1:50:53You know how useful your Bank of Merit card is to you.
- 1:50:55Well, if your Bank of Merit card is useful to you, it can be just as useful,
- 1:50:59maybe even more so, to a woman.
- 1:51:01Say, for instance, she gets into an emergency situation with a car when you're not around.
- 1:51:06A Bank of Merit card could really come in handy.
- 1:51:08Or what about the end of the month when you want to know where all the money went?
- 1:51:11If she had used a Bank of Merit card, she'd have a written record of all her purchases.
- 1:51:16And think about how you can cut down on the time it takes to write all those separate checks.
- 1:51:20Add it all up and see if you don't agree that your wife should have a Bank of Merit card too.
- 1:51:25Bank of Merit card, think of it as money, his and hers money.
- 1:51:30Totals on tonight's game, Houston 7 runs, 9 hits and no errors.
- 1:51:39The Giants 2 runs on 7 hits and no errors.
- 1:51:42The winning pitcher, Larry Dirkert, and the losing pitcher is John Cumberland.
- 1:51:46Now this is Lon Simmons for Bill Thompson, our producer Chuck Suggs,

- 1:53:59Time for Giants Clubhouse brought to you by Langendorf Bread, the nutritious bread with Grow, Grow, Goodness, and by Heald Colleges, specializing in career education since 1863.
- 1:54:09I'm quite sure the Giants would have settled for two out of three in Houston before they arrived in Houston.
- 1:54:17Of course they wouldn't have settled for two out of three at the start of the ninth ballgame because they already had the two.
- 1:54:21And it looked as though they might get three when John Cumberland drilled a single to score two runs in the fifth inning and put the Giants out in front two to nothing.
- 1:54:29It seemed as though Larry Dierker, the starter for Houston, was tiring a bit.
- 1:54:31But the Houston's came right back in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run by Doug Redd, who retired at two and two, then took the lead in the very next inning on a walk to Metzger, an infield out by Sedeno, and probably the key to the ballgame right there.
- 1:54:45Metzger was running. Sedeno had a double play ball to 20s. But Teo could only go to first base because the fact that Metzger was running, he was in at second, and there was no chance of a double play.
- 1:54:53Then Jim Winn and Lee May followed with singles. That was all for starter Cumberland.
- 1:54:57Steve Stone came in. Bob Watson singled a right field off Stone to drive in another run. And it made it a four-to-two ballgame.
- 1:55:06Houston picked up three more in the eighth inning, this time against Ron Bryant, a walk to Jim Winn after one was out.
- 1:55:12Lee May's single, a walk to Bob Watson, and a wild pitch. And then Jim Barr replacing Bryant and a triple by Rader to drive in two more runs.
- 1:55:21Rader with a home run and a triple to drive in four of the seven Houston runs. Seven runs, nine hits, no errors for Houston.
- 1:55:28Two runs, seven hits, no errors for the Giants. Larry Durker, the starter, who went seven innings.
- 1:55:33The winner, Jim Ray, gets a save, going two innings, giving up just one infield hit.
- 1:55:37The Giants used Cumberland, the loser, Stone, Bryant, Barr, and Morris in tonight's ballgame.
- 1:55:42Bill Thompson will be introducing his special guest when we return in just one minute.
- 1:55:45Now here's a pitch that all you dads out there won't want to miss. Langendorf is offering free tickets for kids 14 and under to the April 28th game between the Giants and Montreal.

- 1:56:33Only the very best ingredients are baked into Langendorf bread to give you bodybuilding nutrition everybody needs.
- 1:56:42Now here's Bill Thompson.
- 1:56:45Our guest this evening is Bob Watson, the Houston left fielder, and Bob who had a big day against the Giants yesterday with a three-run home and two other base hits, and then had a couple of base hits again tonight that certainly helped out in the Houston win.
- 1:56:57Bob, I think it has to be a good one for you guys to finally win that first one.
- 1:57:03Right, Bill. You know, you grow along the season, you lose the first couple, and then you start to wonder if you're going to win one, you know, and then that first one's out the way, and then you know you're on your way.
- 1:57:12I think another thing, too, you know, that writers are forever bringing up what's happened in past years, and they talk about the fact that the Houston Bulldogs in several years has gotten off to horrendous starts.
- 1:57:20Right, you know, they're always bringing up, you know, we were going, I think the first month, a couple years, we won only four games out of 30, you know, and so there's a little pressure on you a little bit, you know, at the start of the season, but I think it's about good we have now, and we're high-spirited and everything, and we're going to show the people that we can play baseball.
- 1:57:38The broad game tonight looked like the first four innings that neither team was ever going to score.
- 1:57:41Yeah, well the pitchers are a little ahead of us right now a little bit, I think, but surprisingly the way the Giants won the bat the first night and yesterday, you know, after the layoff, I think they're going to make a good showing, and I think myself and Doug and Tommy Hilms are swinging that pretty good on our ballclub.
- 1:57:58I was going to say, it's almost unbelievable, I don't know if you were putting a writer on there, something about the starts you've had in three previous years, was that really official, that bad a start?
- 1:58:06Well, it's official, my first year starting with the ballclub, 69, I took it something like 0 for 21, and then next year 70, 0 for 28, and then last year 0 for 32, and after I get past that first week of playing, then I catch fire and I end up hitting it for the month like 340 or something.
- 1:58:24Sometimes a guy can be playing at Oklahoma City if he's started by right, couldn't he?
- 1:58:27Yeah, I was really lucky to stay around here, but I was hitting the ball harder at the time, I just couldn't buy a hit, I just couldn't buy a hit at all.
- 1:58:32Well, but over a period of time, again speaking of writers, there's been a bum rap attached to your throwing arm, but in this series you made an outstanding throw to second base the other night on Murat Shah, when he hit a ball in the corner, in fact it was a very, very close play, I believe Homestead had him out, and you made a great throw on McCovey tonight at third base. Was the bum rap thing a fair thing about your arm, is it improved now or what?
- 1:58:52Well, I had a very serious arm injury, I ran into a brick wall and I completely dislocated it, I had an operation where they cut four inches off the lead tendon, and this was in 66 and it's been coming back ever since, and this winter I did a lot of arm exercises with weights, certain contractions they have around it. I went to screen training and I couldn't believe it, I was really throwing the ball well and it's still with me and it feels like it's getting stronger each day.
- 1:59:18You were originally a catcher, right?
- 1:59:19Yeah, and then I hurt my shoulder trying to catch a foul ball and ran into the seats and I've been to first base in the outfield, and that's where I'm going to be I guess.
- 1:59:27I was going to say, it seems like now you've found a home in left field because I played you there most of the time last year, now you're opening the season here this year.
- 1:59:32Well, I think last year I played about half and half first in left field and then Aquian Lee May started sensing me in left field now because he could play first and he really is the ball game.
- 1:59:41The acquisition of these two guys, Tommy Helms and Lee May, certainly you had a fine second baseman here before and Joe Morgan was a very fine ball player, but Tommy Helms in tonight's ball game made three outstanding defensive plays.
- 1:59:52I think that's one thing they wanted to have Tommy for the double play and while Lee May has not hit the long ball he drove in key runs again tonight.
- 1:59:58Right, Tommy Helms, he's a little bit better defensive than Joe is, he has a better arm.
- 2:00:03Joe didn't have the great throwing arm for a second baseman, but Tommy Helms has a great arm and he can surprise you, he can get the key base hit, he can hit behind the runner and Lee May is of course going to hit a lot of home runs for us.
- 2:00:14They moved the fence in here, that's how they helped me out a little bit yesterday. So these two guys are going to help our ball club really a whole lot.
- 2:00:21That takes having a guy like Lee May in the lineup, that has to help you and Doug Rader too, the fact that you don't feel the pressure of having supply power, you've got a guy with an established power, you can go into your own thing.
- 2:00:29Right, the last couple of years they put me in a four slot you know and I've had been noted for hitting home runs, I'm more like a line drive hitter and a lot of writers and a lot of fans were on me, how come you don't hit the home run.
- 2:00:41And last year I let this ball club be hitting and they got to a point where they were pitching around me and now they can't really do that so to say because they've got Zadina, Wynn, May and Rader and they can't pitch around one particular guy.
- 2:00:53I think Rader was hampered quite a bit last year with a bad shoulder or something wasn't he?
- 2:00:55Yeah he had a dislocated left shoulder and it really hampered his swing and I think just about every time he swung it popped out and I think half the season he just hung them up and they had to operate on it.
- 2:01:05You used the statement the fact that you're a high spirited ball club and as you know you have a good ball club, that must be a pretty good feeling in your part because you do have a set lineup and you have established starting pitches and you apparently have a good ball club too.
- 2:01:14Right, I think this ball club the way it's going now has a really good chance to make a showing in the National League and we want to challenge the Giants this year.
- 2:01:25We started off really poor a little bit last year, we lost tough games out in San Francisco the first road trip and I think that turned us around for the whole season and we just want to play a good ball and show the fans that we can make room for the National League West.
- 2:01:37I think this Western Division everybody keeps saying it but I don't think there's any doubt about it unless something sort of strange happens it should be a very tough race.
- 2:01:46I think it's going to finally race, you can't really sense it, the Giants have an excellent chance of repeating but also you've got the Dodgers have a good ball club, the Reds, the Braves and ourselves and you can't count out San Diego because they're winning some ball games now and they've got some young players over there and Nate Cobra is hitting the ball good.
- 2:02:05I think that San Diego Broncos, you've got a pitcher from your Broncos, the Brad Roberts over here and only goes and doesn't go yesterday and he says a shout out from his first time.
- 2:02:14Right, Bill Gryffie, young right-hander throws the ball real hard. I think we had to give him up to get Dave along with his other kid Darrell Thomas and another left-hand pitcher Mark Schaeffer. I think Dave Roberts is going to really help our ball club out, he's an excellent left-hander.
- 2:02:27It has to be also I imagine reassuring for all the young of the ball club to see Larry Dirkert who was on the disabled list at the end of last year to come back and pitch so well tonight.
- 2:02:35Yes, we're really pleased the way Dirkert showed tonight.
- 2:02:38With Roberts and Dirkert and of course Don Wilson who's coming up a fine year and then there's young fellow Jerry Royce that you've got in the Cardinals, he could help a great deal too.
- 2:02:44Yes, that's how our balances are starting pitching now with two lefties and three righties and so one team can't distract your line up against us on those certain days.
