- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kevin Sports very daily here and we're bringing
- 0:06Speaker 1: you the folks down and Hide Sports show. On today's show,
- 0:13Speaker 1: we have the usual suspects, football, rugby and hockey. We've
- 0:18Speaker 1: got news from our folks and park runners who as
- 0:21Speaker 1: tourists have been running locally and listen to this all
- 0:24Speaker 1: over the world. So we were here where they've been.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And I found out this week that some of the
- 0:29Speaker 1: Radnah Park Junior park runners have been hitting a notable milestones.
- 0:39Speaker 2: We tell you how to.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Folks on Ski Race Club are managing to carry on
- 0:42Speaker 1: without a slope to practice on since the sports center
- 0:45Speaker 1: closed down. And I will be chatting to Joe Toldhurst
- 0:49Speaker 1: from South Kent Mind about exactly what they do and
- 0:53Speaker 1: asking him about a new fun fundraising idea, the Mental
- 0:57Speaker 1: Health five k fun Run. So we better get cracking.
- 1:05Speaker 1: There's a lot to get through, so let's get you
- 1:09Speaker 1: in the mood to get up. And this is a
- 1:11Speaker 1: great favorite warm up song Maroon five moves like Jagger
- 1:35Speaker 1: there from two thousand and eleven. I'll see you what
- 1:39Speaker 1: that takes me straight back to the warm up days
- 1:44Speaker 1: of Race for Life, you know, because it's just it
- 1:48Speaker 1: was such a good song to get people in the
- 1:50Speaker 1: mood now when you've got to like well, back in
- 1:52Speaker 1: the days it was ladies only, but we probably had
- 1:55Speaker 1: in some venues like two thousand ladies really really rock
- 2:00Speaker 1: in it to that Maroon ve film.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, great days. Okay.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So now then during the week I was out and
- 2:08Speaker 1: about and caught up with my special guest. So so
- 2:11Speaker 1: no more sit back and have a listen. Journey today
- 2:14Speaker 1: brings me to the offices of South Kent Mind, where
- 2:17Speaker 1: I'm joined by Joe Tolhurst morn of Joe.
- 2:18Speaker 2: How are you?
- 2:19Speaker 3: Thank Kevin? Very good, thanks, how are you?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Excellent and thanks for inviting me in today. The charity
- 2:25Speaker 1: South Kent Mind, and I understand has been going a
- 2:27Speaker 1: long time and you've got a lovely agenda of weekly activities,
- 2:31Speaker 1: so tell us about that.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Yeah. So here's South Kment Mind.
- 2:35Speaker 4: We're a local mental health charity here to support anyone
- 2:37Speaker 4: with mental health challenges in our community. We're dedicated to
- 2:40Speaker 4: improving the lives of people with any challenges to do
- 2:43Speaker 4: with mental health. Is south Kent guiding you along a
- 2:46Speaker 4: path to better mental health through a range of support
- 2:49Speaker 4: services such as money, guidance, advice and the range of
- 2:52Speaker 4: weekly activities that you mentioned.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Okay, so the weekly activities, whereabouts to do those and
- 2:59Speaker 1: where do they end?
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 3:00Speaker 4: So each week we run a range of activities across
- 3:03Speaker 4: Folks and Hive and Dover that are fun and formative
- 3:06Speaker 4: and aim to support all our service users on a
- 3:10Speaker 4: longer path to better mental health. Our cooking and baking sessions,
- 3:13Speaker 4: which are really popular, take place in our Folks and Center,
- 3:16Speaker 4: which is at the top of Time Time Street where
- 3:18Speaker 4: we have the Abercrombie's Cafe.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Where all of our cooking and baking takes place.
- 3:22Speaker 4: We'll also have a reading group in Hive, Mindfulness and
- 3:25Speaker 4: sessions in Deal and a walk and talk in Dover,
- 3:27Speaker 4: just name a few. So we spread all across the
- 3:29Speaker 4: South Kent area and all on the community that we serve.
- 3:32Speaker 4: And if you're interested in any of these weekly activities,
- 3:36Speaker 4: you can see our websites south kentmindor dot uk and
- 3:39Speaker 4: give us a ring to acquire first about joining.
- 3:42Speaker 1: So the South Kent Mine it covers a lot of areas.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I mean, if.
- 3:45Speaker 2: People how far out does it go?
- 3:47Speaker 1: And if you like along the marsh, you've got branches
- 3:51Speaker 1: in where Yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 3: So really it's spanning from Sandwich to Dungeon. Ess.
- 3:54Speaker 4: So if you're a resident within the Folks and the
- 3:56Speaker 4: High District Council area and the Dover District Council area
- 4:00Speaker 4: support We're here to support you with any mental health
- 4:02Speaker 4: problems that you may have, so along those areas.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Okay, I know you linked up with the National Mind
- 4:07Speaker 1: the organization.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's an important it's an important distinction to
- 4:11Speaker 4: get across Kevin because although we're affiliated with National Mind,
- 4:14Speaker 4: we're actually a totally independent mental health charity. So what
- 4:18Speaker 4: what essentially is is that we're federated with Mind, but
- 4:21Speaker 4: we're run by our own constitution, have a board of
- 4:23Speaker 4: trustees which allows us to support and represent our community
- 4:26Speaker 4: in the best possible way. But that obviously means that
- 4:30Speaker 4: we're totally funded independently too, so we rely on the
- 4:33Speaker 4: generous donations of fundraising support for our local community. So
- 4:36Speaker 4: that's essentially my role to engage that fundraising element and
- 4:40Speaker 4: really sort of engage in the local community in fundraising.
- 4:43Speaker 4: So if you're planning any challenge events and you'd be
- 4:46Speaker 4: interested in working with a great cause, supporting a great cause,
- 4:50Speaker 4: and please do get in touch. All of our contact
- 4:53Speaker 4: details are on our website, Southkmind at org dot uk
- 4:56Speaker 4: or through our feel free to check us out in
- 4:57Speaker 4: our social media channels as well.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Right now, want to talk about this later, but you've
- 5:01Speaker 1: got a lovely local challenge coming up. I'm really looking
- 5:04Speaker 1: forward to this one because he's right up my street.
- 5:07Speaker 1: But we'll have a chat about that just after a
- 5:09Speaker 1: bit of music. But carrying on, let's talk about I'm
- 5:12Speaker 1: mean mind. Have they got any charity shops?
- 5:16Speaker 4: Yeah, we actually have three charity shops across the South
- 5:19Speaker 4: Kent area. We got Shops and Folks and Hive and
- 5:22Speaker 4: Dover run by an amazing team of volunteers and led
- 5:25Speaker 4: by brilliant managers. So our High shops on the High
- 5:27Speaker 4: Streets it actually turned nine years old this year and
- 5:31Speaker 4: our Dover folks and shops both opened last year. It's
- 5:34Speaker 4: a really busy year for the charity last year as
- 5:37Speaker 4: we opened our Dover shop in August twenty three that
- 5:39Speaker 4: can be found on forty four big In Street and
- 5:42Speaker 4: our Folks and Shop opened in December twenty twenty three
- 5:45Speaker 4: and is on a forty six Sandgate Road. So who
- 5:47Speaker 4: shout out to everyone involved with the opening of those
- 5:50Speaker 4: shops and the every day running because they play a
- 5:53Speaker 4: vital role in raising funds for our charity and it
- 5:55Speaker 4: takes the support of donations from the public to keep
- 5:59Speaker 4: those shops to live because you know, the proceeds are
- 6:02Speaker 4: a vital aspect of our charity. And if you're thinking
- 6:06Speaker 4: of a clearout before Christmas or even after, if you
- 6:08Speaker 4: get something you don't like, you can drop off your
- 6:11Speaker 4: donations at our shops. All the information can be found
- 6:14Speaker 4: our websites or if you if you acquire a collection,
- 6:17Speaker 4: you can find you find our phone number on our website,
- 6:20Speaker 4: give us a ring and we can arrange a collection
- 6:23Speaker 4: of of your of your donations.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Okay, so the shops, et cetera.
- 6:28Speaker 1: And a lot of organizations like Mind do rely on volunteers.
- 6:33Speaker 1: So tell us a little bit about volunteers and if
- 6:36Speaker 1: you like, how many people do actually engage with Mind
- 6:39Speaker 1: at the shops and elsewhere.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Yeah, so the volunteering side side of our charity is true.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Live with main chainity is the backbone of our charity.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Can we can run our sessions, our shops, everything that
- 6:52Speaker 4: we do without without our volunteers, which we have seventy
- 6:54Speaker 4: three registered volunteers across our charity and we couldn't help
- 6:58Speaker 4: the people that we do without them, so huge thanks
- 7:00Speaker 4: to every single one of them. And if you're looking
- 7:02Speaker 4: to become a volunteer, this would be a great help
- 7:05Speaker 4: to our charity. If you're looking to get involved with
- 7:07Speaker 4: our sessions in our shops or just help out our
- 7:10Speaker 4: fundraising events, then feel free to get in touch on
- 7:13Speaker 4: our website or through our social media channels as running
- 7:15Speaker 4: find the information. But if you're not looking to do
- 7:18Speaker 4: a full time volunteering role, we also have a great
- 7:20Speaker 4: ambassador program where you can essentially means you just give
- 7:25Speaker 4: up a few hours of your time each year to
- 7:27Speaker 4: help out with a few projects that we have on
- 7:30Speaker 4: a few events, a few fundraising events such as mental
- 7:34Speaker 4: health fun run coming up, so it's a bit less
- 7:37Speaker 4: intense than being a volunteer full time, but it still
- 7:39Speaker 4: allows you to be a real great help to our charity.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Okay, now I will say I did pick up that
- 7:46Speaker 1: somebody put on social media that if you're having a clearout,
- 7:50Speaker 1: then instead of getting after getting rid of all your
- 7:52Speaker 1: toys and bits and pieces for the kids of Christmas,
- 7:56Speaker 1: why not get rid of them before Christmas? Wouldn't that
- 7:58Speaker 1: be a good idea to just like all your shops
- 8:01Speaker 1: absolutely bulging with Christmas toys and things just before Christmas
- 8:05Speaker 1: instead is the big aftermath you get afterwards. So before
- 8:09Speaker 1: we go any further, let's tell us about the people
- 8:11Speaker 1: that use your services.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, ken So we have.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Last year we had over twenty five hundred local people
- 8:19Speaker 4: use our services, and we're always seeing new people in
- 8:23Speaker 4: our folks at Center and across our services, which is
- 8:26Speaker 4: really important because it just shows to us that we're
- 8:28Speaker 4: really engaging with our community and helping with their mental health,
- 8:32Speaker 4: which is obviously the whole point of our charity. We
- 8:35Speaker 4: also visited many local schools and supported pupils and young.
- 8:38Speaker 3: People last year.
- 8:40Speaker 4: That's a great program that we have visiting local schools
- 8:43Speaker 4: helping young children with their mental health because it is
- 8:45Speaker 4: such important age to get into, to get into them
- 8:48Speaker 4: about and stress the importance of good mental health and
- 8:52Speaker 4: focusing on themselves. But we're dedicated to supporting as many
- 8:55Speaker 4: people as possible, as many people who need us in
- 8:57Speaker 4: our community. So get in touch if if you need
- 9:00Speaker 4: help with your mental health, if you're struggling with if
- 9:02Speaker 4: you have mental health challenges, please do get in touch
- 9:05Speaker 4: and see how we can help you.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Do you know what I've bit on a point there
- 9:10Speaker 1: visiting schools. I think it is so important now for
- 9:12Speaker 1: youngsters because perhaps back in my day, if you like,
- 9:17Speaker 1: if people had mental health problems, the children didn't quite
- 9:20Speaker 1: understand it. But now there's more awareness, isn't there, And
- 9:22Speaker 1: it's good to get the children talking about it.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, Kevin.
- 9:26Speaker 4: There's so much more awareness and so much better understanding
- 9:29Speaker 4: around mental health and how to improve it and how
- 9:32Speaker 4: to how to combat feelings that in the past weren't
- 9:35Speaker 4: really understood. And it's so important that when people are
- 9:39Speaker 4: feeling emotions that you know, are confusing, are challenging them,
- 9:44Speaker 4: it's important to speak out and to seek services that
- 9:46Speaker 4: can really help you. And I think that's the sort
- 9:48Speaker 4: of real step that's occurred in the last years or
- 9:51Speaker 4: obviously generationally that really is important towards better mental health
- 9:56Speaker 4: for everyone.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Okay, Joe Lot, we're going to take a little break.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Their played a bit of music, and then we're going
- 10:00Speaker 1: to come back because we've got to talk about a
- 10:02Speaker 1: little the fun runners coming up.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Well, a little less conversation there. Do you know what?
- 10:28Speaker 1: I was trying to fire a song in a playlist
- 10:31Speaker 1: anything to do with elves and elves there was no
- 10:35Speaker 1: chance so yet to set.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Off for Elvis Presley.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Dear, they've got a straight ahea a Christmas crack of
- 10:41Speaker 1: that one. Anyway, let's go back and continue our chat
- 10:44Speaker 1: with Joe Tolhurst.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Okay, so, welcome back.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Joe, and now we've learned about the background and what
- 10:52Speaker 1: you do here at South Keep mind. But you've another
- 10:55Speaker 1: event coming up on December the one, so tell us
- 10:58Speaker 1: all about that.
- 10:59Speaker 3: We do we do?
- 11:00Speaker 4: So yeah, on the first of December, Kevin, we're hosting
- 11:02Speaker 4: a family fun focused run or jog or even walk
- 11:06Speaker 4: event along the LEAs. It's a five kilometer course roughly
- 11:09Speaker 4: following the local park run route, open to all ages
- 11:12Speaker 4: and ability and hint of the name, it's called Mental Elf.
- 11:15Speaker 4: So we're strongly and encouraging all participants to dress up
- 11:18Speaker 4: in their best elf attire.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Well that's great.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I mean Christmas time people kind of step outside the salves,
- 11:25Speaker 1: don't they, And they don't really care what they look like,
- 11:28Speaker 1: especially if we're all in it together. So okay, so
- 11:31Speaker 1: it's a five k run. Have you done one of
- 11:33Speaker 1: these before personally?
- 11:35Speaker 3: Yeah, A couple of them through the years.
- 11:37Speaker 4: But as a charity, we haven't organized something on this
- 11:40Speaker 4: scale before, so it's so it's a real it's a real,
- 11:43Speaker 4: great opportunity for us to to get out there in
- 11:46Speaker 4: the charity, with the charity and do something different, engaging
- 11:49Speaker 4: in the local community.
- 11:50Speaker 2: And does it take as it?
- 11:52Speaker 1: Have you hit any barriers you know on the way
- 11:55Speaker 1: to organizing this? Is it a logistical night there or
- 11:58Speaker 1: has it been a piece of cake?
- 12:00Speaker 3: Well, I would say piece of cake.
- 12:01Speaker 4: But you know, this is our first year organizing, so
- 12:04Speaker 4: there's been lots to get our heads around as a team.
- 12:06Speaker 4: But thankfully we have a brilliant network of other local
- 12:09Speaker 4: minds we've provided guidance around navigating this event. We also
- 12:12Speaker 4: received valuable advice and guidance from our friends at Channel Rotary,
- 12:16Speaker 4: especially mister Bill Flavel whose experience organizing events such as
- 12:19Speaker 4: this was a huge help, along with of course their
- 12:22Speaker 4: generous assistance with Lennigan Gazebo for our registration desk on
- 12:25Speaker 4: the day, along with a group of volunteers who will
- 12:27Speaker 4: marshal the course. So a big thank you to everyone
- 12:29Speaker 4: involved there and of course big thanks to the council
- 12:32Speaker 4: who helped with arrange all the applications that we need,
- 12:34Speaker 4: which you know, it was a great experience doing and
- 12:38Speaker 4: with of course helping organize the use of the band
- 12:40Speaker 4: stand of the day which is where which is where
- 12:42Speaker 4: you are DJ compared beyond the day.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Yeah, that's my job, but I've been on the bands
- 12:47Speaker 1: then it's quite handy. Actually ives porn a rhino. I'm
- 12:49Speaker 1: the only dry person on the lease. So what can
- 12:53Speaker 1: we expect on the day?
- 12:54Speaker 4: Yeah, on the day, Kevin, we're looking to open registration
- 12:57Speaker 4: from ten to thirty am, so everyone's brought in it.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Turn up from ten thirty am to register and pick
- 13:03Speaker 4: up your race number from our registration desk which will.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Be at the lees Cliff Hall.
- 13:07Speaker 4: From then the wilter grab a coffee or a drink
- 13:10Speaker 4: or even a cake if you can start with that
- 13:12Speaker 4: before the run, before or after from a mobile vendor
- 13:16Speaker 4: who'll be there on the day. Huge thanks to the
- 13:18Speaker 4: Truffle Pig of High for helping out on that one.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Then from eleven thirty we'll have music playing from the
- 13:23Speaker 4: bandstand and the warm up session to make sure no
- 13:25Speaker 4: one pulls a muscle on the run, and then the
- 13:28Speaker 4: run proper will begin from twelve and it'll be from
- 13:30Speaker 4: the bandstand and we'll follow a version of the route.
- 13:33Speaker 3: The five kilometer Park Run routes.
- 13:35Speaker 4: So from the bandstand up towards Sandgate to the end
- 13:38Speaker 4: of the lease, turn around, head all the way along
- 13:41Speaker 4: the leaze towards the memorial arch, and then back again
- 13:44Speaker 4: to that first turnaround point and then back to the
- 13:47Speaker 4: bandstand where you started. So it's a five kilometer course,
- 13:50Speaker 4: but there's no obligation to complete the whole distance or
- 13:52Speaker 4: even to run or jog, as you can walk part
- 13:55Speaker 4: of the course if you'd like. It's all about having
- 13:59Speaker 4: fun and supporting so kep mind, which is you know,
- 14:02Speaker 4: which is the whole point of fundraisers like this and
- 14:04Speaker 4: we yeah.
- 14:05Speaker 3: We're really look forward it.
- 14:06Speaker 4: So after the run, will give everyone their medals as
- 14:11Speaker 4: of course, everyone gets a medal for taking parts and
- 14:13Speaker 4: hand out some of the awards for the best dressed
- 14:16Speaker 4: elves on the day, So big incentive to dress up there.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Right, good, sounds like it's going to be fun.
- 14:20Speaker 1: But I mean for families, you're right to bring the
- 14:23Speaker 1: buggies and the dogs along.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Yeah. Of course, of course both dogs, buggies and wheelchairs
- 14:28Speaker 4: were allowed, but we asked that dogs are kept on lead,
- 14:31Speaker 4: don't interfere with other runners and with wheelchairs and pushchairs
- 14:35Speaker 4: people who are especially especially careful and aware of other
- 14:38Speaker 4: participants doing the run.
- 14:40Speaker 2: So that's good.
- 14:41Speaker 1: And so you haven't been doing this on your own
- 14:43Speaker 1: obviously there's a team of you. So is anyone you
- 14:45Speaker 1: want to thank for helping you out?
- 14:47Speaker 3: Quite a few, Kevin, with these things that don't happen individually.
- 14:49Speaker 4: It's all so big thanks to the staff, trustees, volunteers
- 14:54Speaker 4: everyone here at South Kent Mind who helped organize the
- 14:56Speaker 4: event and will give their time very generously on the
- 14:59Speaker 4: day on the first of December. Again big thanks to
- 15:02Speaker 4: Channel Rotary for their help and advice in the build
- 15:04Speaker 4: up on the day. We could have done it without
- 15:06Speaker 4: their experience of doing fun runs like this, and of
- 15:10Speaker 4: course to Trove Devauce or the Park Run and Ray
- 15:13Speaker 4: Johnson of the Rotary Club of Folkstone, two individuals who
- 15:16Speaker 4: have had many questions who I personally have had many
- 15:18Speaker 4: questions for over the past couple of months and have
- 15:21Speaker 4: been really really helpful throughout.
- 15:22Speaker 3: So thank you very.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Much, and of course yourself Kevin having me on the
- 15:25Speaker 4: show firstly and giving up your time to Djail and
- 15:28Speaker 4: compare on the day.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Well, thank you very much. It's very gracious of you
- 15:32Speaker 2: and Joe.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I just want to say that Trevor de Vous and
- 15:35Speaker 1: Ray Johnson are both former guests of the show, so
- 15:39Speaker 1: very enthusiastic about what they do.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 1: So okay, so how can people book? Is time to
- 15:45Speaker 1: find out how people can sign up?
- 15:47Speaker 4: Yes, so if this is something interesting if you look
- 15:50Speaker 4: into book. We're selling tickets on event Bright this year,
- 15:53Speaker 4: so online, the links of which can be found on
- 15:56Speaker 4: our website and that's south Kentmind dot org dot UK.
- 16:00Speaker 4: You can also reach this page through our social media channels,
- 16:02Speaker 4: which is at south Kent Mind on Instagram where the
- 16:05Speaker 4: event Bright link is in our bio, or search south
- 16:07Speaker 4: Kent Mind on Facebook.
- 16:09Speaker 2: We look forward to seeing everyone there. Excellent.
- 16:12Speaker 1: So so this is a first for you, But I mean,
- 16:15Speaker 1: if you've got any other sort of Christmas type or
- 16:17Speaker 1: anything events coming up with people that you want to
- 16:19Speaker 1: share with people.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 4: So December is obviously really busy month for the charity.
- 16:23Speaker 4: We've got lots of collection days coming up throughout that month.
- 16:26Speaker 4: You can see us in Asda in Folkeston on the
- 16:29Speaker 4: sixth and seventh of December and then dos around the town,
- 16:32Speaker 4: including the Living Advent Days as well that they have
- 16:34Speaker 4: coming up. We also in terms of fundraising events, we
- 16:37Speaker 4: have a Twistmas Quiz on the twenty seventh of December
- 16:42Speaker 4: at Holy Trinity Church in Folkeston. The idea of this
- 16:45Speaker 4: being that it breaks up that that period between Christmas
- 16:48Speaker 4: and New Year and gives it gives everyone something to do,
- 16:51Speaker 4: because obviously that can be a bit of a be
- 16:52Speaker 4: of a lost be of a lost time.
- 16:54Speaker 3: So the twenty seventh of December we have a quiz.
- 16:57Speaker 4: We just had one on the first November which went
- 16:59Speaker 4: down really really well, had a great raffle and everyone
- 17:02Speaker 4: really enjoyed themselves. So next one coming on the twenty seventh. Joe,
- 17:05Speaker 4: I think we've just about covered everything.
- 17:08Speaker 1: There's so much to learn, and I've learned so much
- 17:10Speaker 1: by just speaking to you today. So is there any
- 17:13Speaker 1: final words from you, anything that we've forgotten the whole
- 17:16Speaker 1: that we want to mention everything.
- 17:17Speaker 4: But like I said, further information on all of our
- 17:20Speaker 4: services and especially how to book mental health can be
- 17:23Speaker 4: found in our event Bike can be found through the
- 17:26Speaker 4: event Bike page can be found on our website or
- 17:29Speaker 4: social media channels, which is again South Kentmind does all
- 17:32Speaker 4: dot uk or search South Kent Mind on Instagram and Facebook.
- 17:36Speaker 4: So first of December mental Health. Looking forward seeing everyone
- 17:39Speaker 4: there and the relevant links and pages to everything I've
- 17:41Speaker 4: talked about in terms of fundraising, donation, volunteering, anything to
- 17:46Speaker 4: do with our services or how you can get evolved
- 17:49Speaker 4: can be found on our website. We'd really love to
- 17:51Speaker 4: hear from you, especially if this is something that if
- 17:54Speaker 4: South Kent Mind can provide a service that would really
- 17:56Speaker 4: benefit your mental health. And that's the big thing about
- 18:00Speaker 4: get getting out here and til you say, Kevin to
- 18:02Speaker 4: to again stress the point that we're charity here for
- 18:05Speaker 4: everyone who's struggling with mental health challenges. So please do
- 18:10Speaker 4: get in touch if we can help you, because because
- 18:13Speaker 4: it's it's something that's really important to speak out about.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And we really need everyone to know that.
- 18:19Speaker 4: They have a charity, a local charity that they can
- 18:21Speaker 4: turn to when when their mental health is really struggling.
- 18:24Speaker 5: So just just to that final point there, Okay, excellent,
- 18:29Speaker 5: So well, we look forward to seeing you on the
- 18:31Speaker 5: first Joe, I will just say that I did order
- 18:34Speaker 5: my ILF costume yesterday, so if I'm going to dress
- 18:37Speaker 5: up then anywhere else that comes along, and I know
- 18:39Speaker 5: a lot of people that will be coming along will
- 18:41Speaker 5: enter into the spirit of things.
- 18:42Speaker 2: You've got your costume, Joe. All sort is good, EXE,
- 18:45Speaker 2: health is.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Right.
- 18:47Speaker 1: We see you on the first and thanks for having
- 18:49Speaker 1: a check Jo.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Thanks, Keren, really appreciate see you there. Thank you very much.
- 18:52Speaker 1: So that was Joe told us there from South Kiment Mind,
- 18:55Speaker 1: telling us exactly what they do at South Kip Mind
- 18:57Speaker 1: and bring us news of the mental ilth of Festive
- 19:00Speaker 1: fun run. So please come along and support it. I'll
- 19:02Speaker 1: be on the mic and I've got my elf costume
- 19:05Speaker 1: on order. I'm sure there'd be. I want to see
- 19:07Speaker 1: loads of runners in their elf costumes. So yeah, we'll
- 19:10Speaker 1: see you there. Okay, it's time for a bit of
- 19:12Speaker 1: music now, and we've got a bit of boys owner
- 19:14Speaker 1: and this one for Ages. He's got a picture of you.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Always reminds me of mister Bean for some reason. There
- 19:34Speaker 1: we go, boys own their picture of you. Okay, we've
- 19:39Speaker 1: better do some local sport now, So some football news
- 19:44Speaker 1: in the It'sbian Premier League Glass Saturday folks, and in
- 19:47Speaker 1: Victor B. Craig Wanderer's one dail at Home for the
- 19:50Speaker 1: news of the match, listening to our man Adydwks, who
- 19:53Speaker 1: will be bringing you a full report on the Saturday
- 19:55Speaker 1: sports roundup between ten and eleven. This week is FA
- 19:59Speaker 1: Trophy at in the second round proper as in Victor.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Welcome Hanwell Town FC to Chariton Road. Handwell come from
- 20:06Speaker 1: Perryvale in the London borough of Ealing and are currently
- 20:09Speaker 1: in thirteenth place in the Southern League Premier South Division
- 20:13Speaker 1: and their form record looks very similar to Folks doings
- 20:16Speaker 1: you know, so should be quite an even game and
- 20:20Speaker 1: at stake we've got the winners stand to pocket three
- 20:23Speaker 1: seven hundred and fifty pound and the losers one thousand pound.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Ivetown lost four too at home to seven Oaks last
- 20:30Speaker 1: week and their next game is a way to Area
- 20:32Speaker 1: of Town who are seventh hievering eighteenth spot, just one
- 20:36Speaker 1: place outside the relegation zone. But I have to keep
- 20:39Speaker 1: plugging away and picking up points as three bages three
- 20:42Speaker 1: of Bridges in the place below them or just one
- 20:45Speaker 1: point behind. But they've got two games in hand. New
- 20:49Speaker 1: Romney beat Burmersey Town two to one in the Interregional
- 20:52Speaker 1: Challenge Cup. This week is a different competition. It's the
- 20:56Speaker 1: Ken Intermediate Challenge Shield where they face a trip to Cuckton,
- 21:00Speaker 1: which is near Rochester. Hawkins beat idle Hill five one
- 21:04Speaker 1: away in the Kent County Premier League and this week
- 21:07Speaker 1: they are also in the Challenge Shield at home to
- 21:10Speaker 1: Metro Gas who traveled down from southeast London. Now the
- 21:14Speaker 1: folks don't laid is They just carry on winning, you know.
- 21:16Speaker 1: But this must have been quite a close game as
- 21:19Speaker 1: last Sunday they beat Hawkins four to three. Their next
- 21:23Speaker 1: game is at home on the twenty fourth November, where
- 21:26Speaker 1: once again they meet Betshanger, this time in the league.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Now they've got some news from the Folkston Ski Race Club.
- 21:33Speaker 1: This has been sent in by former guests of the show,
- 21:36Speaker 1: Claire Gravener, remembering their last they lost their home dry
- 21:41Speaker 1: Ski Sclope when the sports center closed. So Claire goes
- 21:44Speaker 1: on to say, despite some significant changes this season, Folks
- 21:48Speaker 1: and Ski Race Club has shown remarkable resilience and achieved
- 21:52Speaker 1: impressive results. This past weekend, several races took part in
- 21:56Speaker 1: the annual end of season Night Race at Chatham, where
- 21:59Speaker 1: this secured five podium finishes, also having both the youngest
- 22:04Speaker 1: and the oldest racers, showing that ski racing is a
- 22:07Speaker 1: sport for all. Now, that is a fantastic way to
- 22:09Speaker 1: close the season. Another Folks the racer Alicia, competed in
- 22:15Speaker 1: the National Schools at Snowsports Outdoor Championships and achieved third
- 22:20Speaker 1: under twelve. Even more exciting, she's now been selected for
- 22:23Speaker 1: the National school squad. Wow, that's a huge accomplishment. So
- 22:27Speaker 1: well done to Alicia there. Now, last month at the
- 22:30Speaker 1: London and Southeast Regionals there were many overall season placings.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Miler in the under eighth came fifth amber and the
- 22:38Speaker 1: under tens was fifth plus the winner of the annual
- 22:41Speaker 1: Bursary award.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Selina was the first.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Under twenty one's Jane was the first Masters, Richard was
- 22:48Speaker 1: the third Masters. Olivia and Alicia both won the Chairman's
- 22:52Speaker 1: Cup and Tom sorry Tom won the Effort Cup. Now
- 22:56Speaker 1: these successes are especially meaningful given the last few difficult months.
- 23:01Speaker 1: With Folks and Sports Center going into administration, Folks and
- 23:04Speaker 1: Ski Race Club were left with no home slope for training.
- 23:08Speaker 1: This has had an enormous effect with no local facility
- 23:10Speaker 1: for regular training. Thankfully, the fantastic ski community has run
- 23:15Speaker 1: it around and Chatham has generously offered a space to
- 23:18Speaker 1: train with them in the meantime. However, this solution comes
- 23:22Speaker 1: with its own challenges. Chatham is over an hour away,
- 23:25Speaker 1: which means long trips for members, too much for some
- 23:27Speaker 1: of the younger racers. Plus the increased travel time and
- 23:30Speaker 1: session courts have added financial pressure. So in spite of
- 23:34Speaker 1: all this, the team spirit and determination continued to shine through,
- 23:38Speaker 1: proving that hard work and determination our races are still
- 23:41Speaker 1: achieving results. So the end of season on a high
- 23:45Speaker 1: and can only hope that the sports Center reopens as
- 23:48Speaker 1: they carry on with the sport that they love in
- 23:51Speaker 1: her hometown. And Clara said she will come into the
- 23:53Speaker 1: studio once more when we might have a bit of
- 23:56Speaker 1: an update on the sports Center, so perhaps in the
- 23:59Speaker 1: new year. Now, I just love this track because it's
- 24:02Speaker 1: just one word and it's unbelievable.
- 24:17Speaker 2: You're unbelievable.
- 24:19Speaker 1: It's great and it's one word and it just plays
- 24:22Speaker 1: on your mind, isn't it.
- 24:23Speaker 2: What a great track that was.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I can can't kind of picture it now, go back
- 24:27Speaker 1: probably top of the Pops where everybody in the audience
- 24:30Speaker 1: was jumping up and down having a great time to
- 24:32Speaker 1: that track. Okay, so we've got some running news now
- 24:35Speaker 1: because it was a busy weekend for our local runners.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Recent guest of the show Amy Seeger was in fine form.
- 24:42Speaker 1: She was third overall and first female in the Chatham
- 24:45Speaker 1: Maritime ten k where she was pleased to get under
- 24:48Speaker 1: thirty eight minutes. Tristan Upton from South Kent Harrier's run
- 24:51Speaker 1: a PB time of fifty one forty one, be in
- 24:55Speaker 1: his previous best time by over half a minute. Rebecca
- 24:58Speaker 1: Pownee from the Folkston Club run a fast forty four
- 25:01Speaker 1: oh seven seconds time at the same Chatham race as
- 25:05Speaker 1: she finished fourth female and this was following on from
- 25:08Speaker 1: her recent second that female category finish in the Deal
- 25:14Speaker 1: five miler. So Rebecca is really on form at the
- 25:17Speaker 1: moment now. Kate Clipstone from the Folkston Club send me
- 25:20Speaker 1: a report on their runners and I was staggered to
- 25:23Speaker 1: see some of the venues that the runners ended up
- 25:26Speaker 1: doing their Saturday morning park run the previous week. I
- 25:29Speaker 1: noticed the South Kent Harriers are out and about, so
- 25:31Speaker 1: let's start with them. They had runners at Margate Hasting's
- 25:35Speaker 1: Catford Chase Water which is in the West Midlands, and
- 25:38Speaker 1: former guests of the show Amy Stimpson and her boyfriend
- 25:41Speaker 1: Jared Dobson were I hope I get this right. It
- 25:44Speaker 1: was just it looks like the why Promenade park Run,
- 25:47Speaker 1: which is in the Brecon region of Wales. So last
- 25:51Speaker 1: week the other local park runners hit some neighbouring venues
- 25:54Speaker 1: such as Ashford, Margate, Pegwell Bay, Warmer and Deal, then
- 25:58Speaker 1: further afield to East Grinstead, Sean Woods that's in Gravesend,
- 26:03Speaker 1: Preston Park in Brighton, Label Lakes, Pamclive Allen visited family
- 26:08Speaker 1: and did the Barnstable Park Run in Devon. Eight runners
- 26:11Speaker 1: did holy Rood in Edinburgh, three made it to Keswick
- 26:16Speaker 1: in Cumbria, two visited University of Northampton, then even further afield.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Jacob Henwood was thirteenth at the Donneale Park park Run
- 26:26Speaker 1: in Vienna. Meanwhile, Linnea Stockhol found a park run in Montreal, Canada,
- 26:33Speaker 1: and also in Canada by in Quebec. Henry Ackson came
- 26:36Speaker 1: top tourist in the first place and his fiancee Amy
- 26:40Speaker 1: Owen was also the first lady. So what a weekend
- 26:44Speaker 1: for park runners. What has park run done? It's just
- 26:47Speaker 1: put runners on the map, searching out new venues and
- 26:51Speaker 1: just having a really good time. Now on Sunday, I
- 26:55Speaker 1: popped over to watch the Radna Park Junior Park Run,
- 26:59Speaker 1: where are and eleven young runners took part under the
- 27:02Speaker 1: guidance of former guest to the show. How many times
- 27:05Speaker 1: have I said that today we must have had half
- 27:06Speaker 1: a folks and in this this studio anyway, former guests
- 27:09Speaker 1: of the show run director Trevor devout. It was an
- 27:13Speaker 1: exciting mix of juniors and parents who run and encourage
- 27:16Speaker 1: their children. But what was new to me was a
- 27:18Speaker 1: little a recognition ceremony to youngsters who had reached park
- 27:23Speaker 1: running milestones. Run director Trevor told me that forty one
- 27:27Speaker 1: milestones had been achieved since the event started fifteen weeks ago.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Last week, six youngsters were recognized for an accumulated mileage
- 27:36Speaker 1: that he called a half marathon and that's eleven park runs.
- 27:40Speaker 1: One youngster had accumulated an ultra marathon distance of one
- 27:44Speaker 1: hundred k. That's fifty park runs, and there are recognitions
- 27:48Speaker 1: for the marathon distance. There's twenty one runs. Then it
- 27:51Speaker 1: switches to well done for one hundred and two hundred
- 27:54Speaker 1: and fifty junior park runs. Now you've probably been working
- 27:57Speaker 1: out that the Radnagh Park Junior Park Run as only
- 28:00Speaker 1: held fifteen events. But these totals have been achieved by
- 28:04Speaker 1: being a tourist before the Rednam Park Run started and
- 28:07Speaker 1: visiting other events elsewhere and all add up to the total. Now,
- 28:11Speaker 1: don't forget these youngsters are only between four and fourteen
- 28:15Speaker 1: years of age, So well done to all your youngsters.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Keep on pumping out those milestones. Now a bit of
- 28:21Speaker 1: important news. There is no Dover Park Run this week.
- 28:25Speaker 1: They've got some work being carried out on the promenade.
- 28:27Speaker 1: There so no Dover Park Run, so I expect all
- 28:32Speaker 1: the other park runs will have a few extra runners.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Now is time.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I just love female vocalist, powerful ones and they don't
- 28:41Speaker 1: get much more powerful than Whitney Houston.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Whitney It's near.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Oxford nineteen ninety. They are Whitney Houston. I'm your baby tonights.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I just love Whitney song with powerful female vocalists. That's
- 29:21Speaker 1: right out, maistreet. I could do a whole hour if
- 29:24Speaker 1: they let me. Okay, time for some rugby news. Now
- 29:27Speaker 1: the folks do first fifteen lost eighteen ten away to
- 29:30Speaker 1: Vigo in Rochester and this Saturday they're at home to Maidstone.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Folks on are currently ninth and Maidstone are eleventh out
- 29:38Speaker 1: of twelve teams. The second fifteen lost twenty nine to
- 29:41Speaker 1: seventeen away to Cranbrook, and I don't think they've got
- 29:44Speaker 1: the game this week. Checking the league tables, there are
- 29:46Speaker 1: eleven teams in their division, so it looks like it's
- 29:49Speaker 1: folks and turned to miss a game. And the third fifteen, well,
- 29:53Speaker 1: you know what, I can't find neither a result or
- 29:55Speaker 1: a fixture and I'm a bit worried because they've been
- 29:57Speaker 1: struggling to raise aside just lately. So I've decided not
- 30:00Speaker 1: to chase anybody at the rugby club and just see
- 30:03Speaker 1: what unfolds. Well, a last bit of good news and
- 30:05Speaker 1: it comes from the Ladies team who put on a
- 30:08Speaker 1: stonkin performance and beat Sheppy ninety three nil.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Ninety three nil.
- 30:13Speaker 1: What a victory. But you've got a feel for the
- 30:16Speaker 1: Sheppey ladies, haven't you. You know it's one thing getting
- 30:20Speaker 1: ready and training and all of a sudden Saturday or
- 30:23Speaker 1: Sunday comes along and you get absolutely hammered. So Sheppy Ladies,
- 30:28Speaker 1: I hope it hasn't put you back too much and
- 30:31Speaker 1: you still got your enthusiasm for the game. Now, the
- 30:34Speaker 1: Ladies Folks and Ladies' next game is on the twenty
- 30:37Speaker 1: fourth November away to Tunbridge Wells. This latest victory has
- 30:41Speaker 1: put Folks in second place, with Tunbridge Wells in third. Okay,
- 30:46Speaker 1: time for some hockey news now, well, I pop down
- 30:49Speaker 1: once again to see the live streaming of matches into
- 30:52Speaker 1: the Three Hills. But once again it wasn't to be.
- 30:55Speaker 1: I spoke to club chairman and former guests of the show.
- 30:58Speaker 1: There you go another former guest of the show, Lead Marshall,
- 31:00Speaker 1: and he was what can I say? He was somewhat
- 31:04Speaker 1: displeased with no transmission so far, especially as England Hockey
- 31:09Speaker 1: as one eye on this project, which is quite quite groundbreaking.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Actually at this level the installers are having, as they
- 31:15Speaker 1: say in Inverted Comma's teething problems. But he wasn't a
- 31:20Speaker 1: wasted journey. I stayed and watched the Ladies thirteen draw
- 31:23Speaker 1: two all against seven Oaks, where they twice had to
- 31:25Speaker 1: come from behind and worked hard for the drawer goals
- 31:28Speaker 1: coming from Sophie at Well and another form of guests
- 31:31Speaker 1: to the show, Vicki Baxter. Overall, the club fielded twelve teams.
- 31:35Speaker 1: They won four, drew three and lost five The best
- 31:39Speaker 1: result of the day came from the men's four to eleven,
- 31:41Speaker 1: who beat Martin Russett's three nil. Goalscorers were Matt Bates,
- 31:45Speaker 1: Theo Coombs and Ben Allen. Now it looks like it's
- 31:48Speaker 1: back to thirteen fixtures this week. The reason it was
- 31:51Speaker 1: only twelve last week was because Oxted they've withdrawn from
- 31:55Speaker 1: the league, which has left the men's second team without
- 31:58Speaker 1: a game. So I've got a little line up here
- 32:01Speaker 1: of the fixtures this week and they've got seven home
- 32:04Speaker 1: games at the Three Hills if you want a bit
- 32:07Speaker 1: of a fix of hockey. And the first game kicks off.
- 32:11Speaker 1: I don't suppose it kicks off, really does it?
- 32:13Speaker 2: What does it do? Is it bully offer?
- 32:15Speaker 1: Anyway, the first game starts at eleven o'clock and the
- 32:18Speaker 1: seventh game starts about three o'clock. So it's back to
- 32:22Speaker 1: back water wall hockey there and hopefully.
- 32:27Speaker 2: It be streaming into the Three Hills.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Now the men's first team, they've got Ashford first team
- 32:33Speaker 1: that's on the Three Hills. That's two o'clock start. And
- 32:38Speaker 1: I'll tell you what, I had a lovely morning with
- 32:40Speaker 1: Joe Joe Tolhurst because I found out that he actually
- 32:43Speaker 1: plays for the men's first team hockey, and so we
- 32:47Speaker 1: spoke about for about half an hour before we got
- 32:50Speaker 1: actually chatting recordings about hockey, sport and the sport in
- 32:54Speaker 1: this area. So yeah, so back to back hockey and
- 32:59Speaker 1: you got the ladies have got one, two, three home games,
- 33:03Speaker 1: so it's quite a mixture there to go down and
- 33:06Speaker 1: get your fix of hockey. Okay, so we rung it
- 33:09Speaker 1: out of time, and so we're gonna crack on, hopefully
- 33:12Speaker 1: a short song. This is called Thunder in My Heart
- 33:15Speaker 1: Again by Mech
