Transcript
- 0:00Hey everybody. So have you ever found yourself
- 0:01saying I wasn't even thinking or I don't even know what happened
- 0:05or it all happened so fast? Here's what I want you to know.
- 0:10In those moments, the thought isn't I lost control in that
- 0:14moment. What we want to recognize is
- 0:17that lost battle, that lost behavior, that loss of values.
- 0:23It didn't happen in that moment. It happened quite a bit before
- 0:27that because acting out usually isn't the beginning of a cycle,
- 0:32it's the end of it. So how many times have you been,
- 0:36have you acted outside your values and think that the
- 0:38problem is in that moment I lost connection with my values?
- 0:44I just want you to start looking at it like it's the end of
- 0:46something. It's the end of a cycle.
- 0:48So the real question isn't why did I act out?
- 0:50The real question is what happened hours or even days
- 0:54before I acted out and I never paid attention to what was going
- 0:58on or I never even knew to pay attention.
- 1:01So that's what we're going to get into today.
- 1:06Welcome to Beyond the Facade podcast.
- 1:08I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and I'm thrilled to have you join me
- 1:11in this space today. What we're going to be doing is
- 1:13diving deep into the trials and triumphs and truths of seeking
- 1:17authenticity. Becoming your true self isn't
- 1:19about a single action or a moment.
- 1:22It's a relentless pursuit, a commitment to self that reveals
- 1:25the rich connection and meaning that our life has to offer.
- 1:28So whether this is your first time tuning in or you're a
- 1:30regular listener, know this. What you're building here goes
- 1:34beyond a conversation. You're here to challenge, to
- 1:36change, and to celebrate the incredible journey of becoming
- 1:40your authentic self. Because when you dare to show.
- 1:42Up fully, the rewards are immeasurable.
- 1:44So welcome to Beyond the Facade. Let's get started.
- 1:49All right. So we focus often on the wrong
- 1:53end of the cycle. So a lot of men define relapses.
- 1:56I looked at pornography. I contacted someone.
- 2:00Acted out. But those behaviors are often
- 2:03like the last step of this and it starts a lot earlier.
- 2:07But you can maybe trace it back to I have conflict with my
- 2:10spouse or my partner. I'm feeling rejected in general.
- 2:14Maybe it's not even my primary attachment now it's my romantic
- 2:17attachment. It's by maybe the world.
- 2:19I just feel alone. I feel isolated.
- 2:22I've got a bunch of pressure at work.
- 2:24Maybe I made a mistake and I'm feeling lonely or exhausted.
- 2:28So the point here is, is the just mentioned it earlier, but
- 2:32the behavior isn't the beginning of the cycle.
- 2:34It's my brains attempt to end the discomfort.
- 2:37Like, I can't stand that discomfort.
- 2:39So your brain is solving a problem.
- 2:42So this is where I want to normalize it without excusing,
- 2:46especially for the betrayed partners.
- 2:48So this isn't a pass. Your brain isn't asking how can
- 2:51I ruin my life today? Your brain's asking, how can I
- 2:54make this feeling stop? How can I get the discomfort to
- 2:57stop whatever it is? And that's an important
- 3:00distinction to make. So the brain doesn't always
- 3:03choose what's healthy, it chooses what's familiar.
- 3:07And I'm fascinated with this concept with humans.
- 3:10I used to be in cells in my career.
- 3:14Cells. I always say that like CELLS,
- 3:17but cells, sales, SALES. And well, that's a little bit of
- 3:23a tangent there. It's all good.
- 3:25When I was there, I would present a product.
- 3:29Now, again, this is my take, but I would present something to
- 3:33potential customers that they would technically make their job
- 3:37easier, their life better. It would be maybe less expensive
- 3:41than what they're already doing, what they're already doing, but
- 3:46they would stick with something that was broken and didn't work
- 3:51or it was more expensive just because it was unfamiliar, just
- 3:55because it was like risk associated with change.
- 3:58So we're going to choose as humans what's familiar.
- 4:01So if pornography and fantasy and affairs and alcohol or
- 4:04compulsive behaviors have relieved some emotional distress
- 4:08in the past, your brain's going to remember that it's going to
- 4:10stick with a familiar because it knows it's going to, quote UN
- 4:14quote, solve a problem, even though we all know it's not
- 4:17technically helping. So it's not because you're weak,
- 4:20it's because that's how learning works.
- 4:23So just I want to normalize the we're going to stick with the
- 4:26familiar and that goes with both partners.
- 4:28It's scary to lean into something that you're not used
- 4:30to. And it's really about how
- 4:32tolerant we are of emotion. OK, so relief isn't the same
- 4:35thing as healing, right? I work with guys all the time
- 4:39and one of the scariest part is when they had go through a bunch
- 4:42of pain or they get caught and they think because of getting
- 4:45caught or even confessing or acknowledging behavior, if they
- 4:49even if it's they're coming to their partner and saying, hey,
- 4:51here's more information. There's a sense of a relief.
- 4:54It's like, OK, it's out there. I know she's hurting.
- 4:57I know that this is hard, but that relief, just recognize
- 5:02there's not change in that relief.
- 5:04And this is going to tie back to a few episodes ago, but I want
- 5:07to talk about how behaviors provide that relief, that
- 5:11temporary relief, temporary escape, temporary regulation.
- 5:14But they don't resolve the shame that I feel.
- 5:17They don't resolve like how I feel about myself.
- 5:20I just don't have to feel the shame for a moment and I don't
- 5:23feel the fear associated with my relationship and what's going on
- 5:27there with parts of my life that fell out of control.
- 5:30That behavior is going to mask that and cover up that, and I'm
- 5:33going to not have to fill that the same thing with grief or
- 5:37insecurity. Oh, insecurity is a big one.
- 5:40It all maladaptive, sexually convulsive behavior will
- 5:45totally, absolutely mask and cover up some insecurity.
- 5:50It'll have me be able to deflect and think about other things and
- 5:53not how I actually feel about myself.
- 5:57And I remember I'm talking about when you're gone
- 5:59psychologically, emotionally. I do recognize there's a bunch
- 6:02of insecurity that exists in the middle of conflict with your
- 6:05partner. But that behavior can help numb
- 6:07us out because you can numb an emotion, but you can't heal an
- 6:12emotion by avoiding it. If we build a new relationship
- 6:16with discomfort, this is where our work can really shine
- 6:19because recovery isn't about learning to never feel
- 6:22uncomfortable. Recovery is about learning how
- 6:24discomfort isn't dangerous. Let's talk about what that looks
- 6:28like. So when I think about the work
- 6:30of Blueprint Institute and choose recovery services, this
- 6:34is where we, this is where this is what we help somebody like
- 6:39myself. And I couldn't do this on my
- 6:41own. I couldn't do this by reading
- 6:44something. I had to sit with somebody that
- 6:46was a professional and help me do this stuff.
- 6:48So when we build a new relationship with discomfort,
- 6:50what I'm talking about is sitting with emotions, not
- 6:53running from them, letting them be.
- 6:56First of all, maybe you step into a therapy session and
- 6:59you're and you're grounded and more calm because that place
- 7:03feels safe. But that professional kind of
- 7:05activates you intentionally and lets you sit without emotions.
- 7:09That's where we build the tolerance.
- 7:10That's where we build a new relationship with discomfort.
- 7:13And they don't let us go too heavy, too deep to we're out of
- 7:16control. To build a new relationship with
- 7:18comfort, we have to name the emotions.
- 7:19What am I feeling when, how do I experience my body?
- 7:22Not just I'm, I'm resentful, not just I'm angry, but what is that
- 7:29like inside of me? What is that like inside my
- 7:31body? And then learning how to
- 7:32regulate emotions. What are those tools that I used
- 7:34to be able to regulate? And building a new relationship
- 7:39with discomfort is also reaching out.
- 7:42It's when I'm in those moments and I want to go back to my
- 7:45pattern of dealing with discomfort.
- 7:48Now I'm going outside of myself. Now I'm going to save trusted
- 7:51people. It doesn't feel good.
- 7:52It doesn't feel good initially to reach out.
- 7:54Everything in my body's telling me not to reach out.
- 7:57But I'm building a new relationship with discomfort
- 7:58when I do. And it's how scary is it or how
- 8:02hard is it to chums change some of these patterns.
- 8:05In fact, I'm going to go off of I'm going to go off on a side
- 8:08tangent here for a second. I tried to talk to men about
- 8:12what this will feel like. And I remember being a little
- 8:15guy and tell you a little bit about my background.
- 8:18Not so much with compulsive behavior, but I was born and
- 8:20raised in southeastern Idaho. And my grandpa was a farmer and
- 8:24my dad was a diesel mechanic, but he farmed some and we used
- 8:26to do what was called flood irrigation.
- 8:29And flood irrigation is when you want to harvest your crops or
- 8:33grow some crops instead of have like sprinklers out in the field
- 8:36or anything like that. There's ditches, ditches that go
- 8:40down throughout the field. And then when you, it's your
- 8:42turn to have water, you'll turn the turn the water loose down
- 8:46through those ditches in the fields.
- 8:48But what you do is you go to a certain part of the ditch and
- 8:50you damn it, you actually put a dam in there, which is like a 2
- 8:54by 4 with a tarp, a plastic tarp.
- 8:57And I remember being a little guy and what would happen was as
- 9:00I would you put his dam there and then as quickly as you
- 9:05could, you put clumps of we call the sod down and it would stop.
- 9:09It would stop the water because you'd block the water with that
- 9:13tarp and then you'd put those sod down.
- 9:17And yet to do it so fast because it was only like 3 feet of water
- 9:19and not even that much 2 1/2 feet of water.
- 9:21But I remember the power of this water when I would dam it off as
- 9:25quickly as I could. I'd put this tarp down in the
- 9:26water, put the clods of dirt down and to hold the tarp in
- 9:29place. And then the water would rush
- 9:31out in that part of the field and it would go flood out into
- 9:34the field. And then you'd let it run for a
- 9:36little while and flood that part of the field and you go down and
- 9:39remember that was a new pathway that the water and it wanted to
- 9:42go down the old pathway. It wanted to go down that ditch.
- 9:46It didn't want to flood the field.
- 9:49It wanted to go the path of leaves resistance.
- 9:51And I tell men that's what this experience is like when you're
- 9:55learning something new, when you're like reaching out, it is
- 9:59hard that you got the force of that water, force of that
- 10:02energy. And when you block that off and
- 10:04you create a new pathway, that water to flow out in other parts
- 10:07of the field, there's nothing easy.
- 10:09About that. It's nothing feels natural about
- 10:11that, Nothing feels good about that.
- 10:13But after that, water runs that direction for a while.
- 10:16If you dammed up for a long time, new pathways would be
- 10:19carved, new rivers will be formed, and then they would run.
- 10:23Maybe not as easy, but it wouldn't be the same thing as
- 10:26when you initially dammed it off.
- 10:27So building that new relationship with comfort is not
- 10:31easy. Other things that we do is
- 10:33movement, engaging your body. I think in Blueprint Institute,
- 10:36where we have men come in for a period of time, a big part of
- 10:40this is involving when they're feeling these heavy emotions,
- 10:44this discomfort, as they move their body, they don't sit in
- 10:47it, they actually move. And it's crazy what the
- 10:50difference that makes. Also, breathing is a big part of
- 10:54building a relationship with discomfort.
- 10:56But I learned about my breath, actually breathing, letting my
- 10:58body know I'm OK. Connection parts work, healthy
- 11:03coping. So recovery isn't about becoming
- 11:05someone who never struggles, it's about becoming someone who
- 11:09no longer needs to escape every single struggle.
- 11:12A part of this journey is learning how to ask better
- 11:14questions and having people around you that ask better
- 11:17questions. So instead of saying why did I
- 11:18relapse like that shame based response of whoa my goodness,
- 11:21why did I relapse? Let's ask the question, what was
- 11:24happening in my life before that urge showed up?
- 11:27What emotion was I trying to escape from?
- 11:29What did I need that I didn't know how to ask for?
- 11:34That's a big one, advocating for needs, right?
- 11:36What I what was I alone in and what did I not reach out in?
- 11:40So what was my nervous system trying to accomplish?
- 11:43If we ask, what is our body asking us to do?
- 11:46It's a big deal. So these questions move men from
- 11:50shame to curiosity. So I want to just leave you all
- 11:53with this thought. Most men that I work with think
- 11:57recovery isn't about learning how to stop acting out.
- 12:01I don't think that's the goal. I think the goal is learning how
- 12:04to stay present when life hurts, learning how to stay present
- 12:07when life hurts, because when you're when you learn to stay
- 12:11with your emotions instead of escaping them, the behaviors
- 12:13begin to lose their job. OK?
- 12:15They begin to held less power. And I know that's change is
- 12:18slow. And also having somebody around
- 12:22that can help me measure that. So when the behavior no longer
- 12:26has a job, it no longer has the same power.
- 12:30So maybe just I'll invite you to do something this week.
- 12:33Don't track your behaviors. Track your emotions.
- 12:35Every time you experience like an urge to act outside your
- 12:38values, ask yourself what's happened in the last 24 hours?
- 12:40Where did I just come from? Because you're going to discover
- 12:43that your relapse didn't start with some temptation.
- 12:46It started with emotion that you never slowed down long enough to
- 12:48notice. OK.
- 12:50So anyway, please don't do this alone.
- 12:53We're here to support you. Reach out.
- 12:56We can do a free consult. They can talk about what you're
- 12:58experiencing, what's happening, and don't stop fighting.
- 13:02Don't give up. Hey, so let's talk about a
- 13:06reclaimed intensive coming up. I know we have some buzz around
- 13:08it, and I'm hoping we get to see you there, but let me tell you
- 13:10what it's about. Have you ever felt like a part
- 13:13of you genuinely wants recovery while another part of you keep
- 13:16sabotaging it? Where one part wants like
- 13:19connection to another part wants escape?
- 13:22Where one part wants honesty and another part wants to hide?
- 13:24And let me give you one more where one part wants to be
- 13:28present with your kids, your partner, and your life, but
- 13:32another part you wants to numb out, want to check out, wants to
- 13:35disappear altogether. Many men spend years fighting
- 13:39this internal battle without even understanding what's
- 13:42actually happening beneath the surface.
- 13:44The truth is, you're not broken, you're not crazy, you're not
- 13:48fighting against yourself by accident.
- 13:50You're carrying a system of parts that were developed for a
- 13:53reason. That's why we create the
- 13:56reclaimed intensive. So reclaim is a four day men's
- 13:59intensive build around internal family systems and parts work in
- 14:02other various tools of recovery. So together we want to identify
- 14:05these different parts of you and we want to understand the wounds
- 14:09and what they're protecting and how to be LED through your
- 14:13internal system so you can find some clarity and confidence and
- 14:16self energy that you haven't had before.
- 14:18Because this isn't about trying harder.
- 14:21It's about understanding what's happening inside of you.
- 14:23So if you're struggling and you want to move beyond managing
- 14:27some of the systems and start addressing it, we're please join
- 14:31us from August 18th to the 21st in Spanish Fork, UT.
- 14:35So go ahead and visit chooserecoveryservices.com.
- 14:38Go to the intensive section and with the reclaimed intensives.
- 14:42And even if you want to schedule a consultation, we can talk
- 14:45about it more. If part of you keeps wondering,
- 14:52should I come to this Courage to Thrive intensive, I want you to
- 14:56listen to that question with compassion.
- 14:59Because many women minimize their pain, they tell themselves
- 15:02other people have it worse. Or I should be over this by now.
- 15:06Or maybe I just need him to get better and then I'll be OK.
- 15:10But the trail trauma impacts your mind, your body, your
- 15:13nervous system, your sense of safety, your identity, and your
- 15:17ability to trust yourself. And healing was never meant to
- 15:20happen alone. Courage to Thrive is a space
- 15:23where you can finally exhale, A space where you don't have to
- 15:26explain why it hurts so deeply. A space where women around you
- 15:31simply get it. You'll experience powerful
- 15:35workshops, experiential healing activities, nervous system
- 15:38support, connection, education, and practical tools that you can
- 15:42take home with you. Most women leave saying I
- 15:46finally don't feel crazy anymore.
- 15:48And many also leave realizing that I matter too.
- 15:53So if something inside you feels drawn to this experience, honor
- 15:56that. That quiet voice inside you may
- 16:00already know what you need. I hope you'll join us August
- 16:0325th through 28th in Spanish Fork, UT.
- 16:13Hey. Thanks for joining.
