- 0:27SPEAKER_00: To become good at managing others, you have to be good at self-learning.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: It is that simple.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: First, what is a growth mindset or a learning mindset?
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: A growth mindset is a way of thinking, a mental discipline, a habit and a reflex to recognise and find opportunities for learning from every situation, from successes and from failures.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: People with a learning mindset believe, at the core of their being, that when they work to learn and improve, they will keep getting better.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: People with a growth mindset don't see obstacles, they see challenges.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: They don't see failure, they see a chance to get closer to success.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: People with a growth mindset don't feel stuck where they are, they believe they can progress.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: They just haven't achieved their goal yet.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Individuals with a learning mindset believe their talents can be developed through hard work, good approaches and input from others.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Growing and learning takes effort, sometimes a lot of effort.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Keep working at this new area and you will get better.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: People with a growth mindset know that working long enough and hard enough will make you very good at this new area.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Developing a growth mindset or learning mindset is possible for anyone.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Next, why developing a learning mindset is so critically important to progress your management career?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Very few managers get any formal training on how to manage teams.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: There is an unsaid assumption that you will learn from your boss and those managers around you.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Without pushing at developing a learning mindset and getting good at self-learning at work, the journey to get good as a manager is too hard for many.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: There are lots of opportunities to stop putting the effort in to learn and accept where you are.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: In a manager's role, you will have to get comfortable with disappointment, with making mistakes, with people disagreeing with you, and a whole host of other challenges.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Without a growth mindset, these knocks are hard for any ego to take.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: A learning mindset helps you build many key attributes and skills that will make you a much better manager.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Here are five important ones a learning mindset helps you develop.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Firstly, it facilitates self-learning at work.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: You are constantly trying to learn from everything you can.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Secondly, it fosters resilience.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: You will make mistakes, be out of your comfort zone, receive tough feedback, etc.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: You will get through each of these and know that you will do so the next time it happens as well.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Keep repeating this cycle and you become more and more resilient.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Third, you look forward to stepping outside your comfort zone because doing so gives you opportunity to learn and improve.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Fourth, you increase your adaptability and flexibility because you learn lots of different ways and routes to achieving your goals.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And fifth, it fosters commitment.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: You need to be committed to the process of learning and improving, otherwise, you would give up part the way through.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Each of these attributes and skills helps you drive your own improvement and success at managing others.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: With a growth mindset, you'll keep pushing yourself to get better, where others with less of a learning mindset give up or slow down.

- 4:52SPEAKER_00: You need to be motivated and committed.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Without either, you will simply not put in the effort that is needed to learn, improve and get good.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: It is not an easy journey in my view, which is why so many drop outs part the way towards their dreams.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Here are five tips to help you build a learning mindset and habit.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Firstly, set yourself goals and work towards reaching them.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Keep focusing on the progress you are making.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Progress and achievements are great fuel to keep yourself motivated and looking to learn.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Focus on how far you've come rather than how far you still have to go.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Keep thinking about the next step and how you're going to achieve that step.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Secondly, to build a learning mindset, learn to accept failure.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: See failure as another opportunity to learn and take another step closer to your goals.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: I doubt you can find any successful person that has not had a lot of failures on the road to becoming successful.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: They become successful because they don't let failure and disappointment stop them trying, working and learning.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: In the podcast description is a link to a short video on YouTube about Michael Jordan and his journey to supporting greatness, which makes this point brilliantly.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Failures are a brilliant source of learning and vital steps to success.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Third, for a growth mindset, cultivate persistence and determination.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: You will experience setbacks, hard-to-hear feedback, failures and disappointments.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: If you don't, you are not out of your comfort zone and probably not really learning.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: When you experience setbacks, don't dwell on what you did wrong.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Focus on what you're going to do differently the next time and make the next time happen quickly.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Keep changing what you do until you achieve success.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Going through this cycle builds your persistence, determination and resilience.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Keep at it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Fourth, make the time to get to know yourself.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: What are your ambitions, your fears, your insecurities, your strengths, your values, your hot buttons, etc.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: The better you know yourself and value yourself, the easier you'll find it to pick yourself up and try again.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Get to know yourself and how you react in different situations.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Fifth, to get better at developing a learning mindset, seek good quality, specific feedback from every source you can.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Ask colleagues, ask your boss, find out what your team members think.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Keep asking for feedback and ask the person giving you feedback to make it as specific and therefore as useful as possible.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: With feedback, you can learn quicker and you'll find it a lot easier to get to success.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Build a strong learning mindset and you'll be happier and more successful regardless of what you want out of life or work.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: To be a successful manager or leader, developing a learning mindset is a vital part of the job description.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: So, in summary, becoming a good manager or leader is a tough journey.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: To improve, most of us have to learn the hard way by self-learning through our mistakes and the mistakes of managers and leaders around us.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: When you are lucky enough to find a manager who takes the time to teach you how to manage well, grab that opportunity with both hands and learn as much as you can.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Learning best practice management skills makes a huge difference to the speed at which you learn.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: You start by using and practicing what you know works rather than having to go through a ton of mistakes before finding what works.
