- 0:15Welcome. Welcome to the Paradox
- 0:19podcast, where there are more than a pair of dogs.
- 0:24In fact, this podcast features three different
- 0:28doctors. Dr. Deborah Brazile, Dr.
- 0:31Vince Johnson Jr. And me, Dr.
- 0:35Deborah Woodson. In this journey,
- 0:38we will examine spiritual concepts that appear to
- 0:43be self contradictory, but actually they
- 0:47uncover deeper underlying truths.
- 0:51This means that many topics are on the
- 0:55table. So buckle your seat belts, put your tray
- 0:59table and your seats in the upright position because
- 1:03this ride can get a little bumpy as
- 1:07it may challenge your current intuitions.
- 1:10For the more you know, the more you realize your knowledge is
- 1:15limited. There is a whole world of knowledge waiting
- 1:19for you to discover.
- 1:35Foreign.
- 1:40Welcome to part two of Seasons
- 1:44Knowing how do you know when a season's over? How do you know it's time
- 1:48to move on? How you know it's time to stay put?
- 1:53Well, hopefully some of those questions will be addressed in
- 1:57part two of Seasons the Knowing.
- 2:06I started dating way too quickly and
- 2:11it wasn't the best relationship.
- 2:15Not, not a terrible person. It was just not.
- 2:18It was not right for me.
- 2:21And I lost my mom during this time, but 100%
- 2:26grateful that she made it through my deceased husband
- 2:30Marty's journey because she was, she was there for me.
- 2:34And there weren't many people around that understood or
- 2:39they thought I was exaggerating, which is a real terrible
- 2:43thing to tell someone who's going through that.
- 2:46So I lost my mom. Traumatizing. It is traumatizing.
- 2:50Vince. And then I lost Marty's father
- 2:55and then his sister. So that
- 2:59family was kind of wiped out. And then
- 3:02a cousin of mine, my favorite uncle, my mom's brother,
- 3:07and then, you know, kind of against all odds, and I
- 3:12was dating online, which I don't necessarily recommend, but, you know, I did find someone.
- 3:15I got married, right? So that was, that was a huge blessing to find somebody
- 3:20when you're older, you're not 25 anymore.
- 3:24But then I lost two very,
- 3:28very special people. The two that really helped me
- 3:32through Marty's disease. They were friends of his and one
- 3:37like my best buddy, you know, B. Joy,
- 3:41who never, never got married. And, you know, we were totally platonic
- 3:45and he was just, he was like my, my best girlfriend, but he was a
- 3:49guy and he came down with Parkinson's and he did die with
- 3:54dignity. And I'd never been in anything like that. And then
- 3:58Charlie joined us, my other friend in Laguna,
- 4:03and he said, do not ever ask me to do
- 4:06this again. And I said, well, B. Joy wanted us there. And he said,
- 4:11I will never do this again. It's Just too traumatizing. I'm like, okay.
- 4:14Six months later, he died in a
- 4:18snow. Well. And so. In a what?
- 4:22A snow well. Do you know what that is? Oh, yeah, yeah. The snow
- 4:26collects on the branches of the tree and it creates a
- 4:32space around the base of the tree. And if you stay and
- 4:36you fall in it, you can't get yourself out of it. You smother.
- 4:40Yeah. You suffocate. And it's just. It's the end.
- 4:44So, you know, I wonder many
- 4:49times, like, why did I lose all of these people?
- 4:53I've also lost girlfriends
- 4:58recently. Not. Not because they
- 5:02didn't want to hang around with me, but because life got busy.
- 5:06So I feel like I have just been alone and
- 5:12it's. It's been. I mean, I know God is in
- 5:16control, so I'm not too much overthinking
- 5:20it, which is powerful for me.
- 5:23I'm in a blended marriage situation that's also not
- 5:27easy. We won't go into that,
- 5:31you know, but when you've got in there kids and all that, you know,
- 5:34it is like, not something for. Let's just put it like that.
- 5:40But I listened to Billy Graham, and I
- 5:43love him, and my dad really loved him. And he was talking about,
- 5:48oddly, he was talking about seasons, like before we decided to do this.
- 5:51And he was talking about transformation and
- 5:58being in the fire and beauty from ashes.
- 6:02And it was really interesting because those words have been
- 6:07spoken over me in a prophetic way. Years ago, when I was in
- 6:11a kind of a charismatic Bible study, that was an interesting experience.
- 6:14And so I look at that and, you know, you say,
- 6:18well, what gives you hope? Right? If you're in. If you're in this and.
- 6:22And yet life has been good in other ways, but it's just been
- 6:26a lot of adversity that you kind of get used to. And then you feel
- 6:31like this survival mode is normal as
- 6:36opposed to thriving and refreshment and everything.
- 6:39So I guess my take. What do you do? How does
- 6:43that manifest where survival, mold is
- 6:47normal? How did that manifest in your life? That's a great
- 6:51question. And the way it manifests is
- 6:55that your standards become very low.
- 7:00Your standards for work, for relationships, for your
- 7:04life, for your purpose, they get dumbed down because
- 7:09you're just trying to make it through and
- 7:13you kind of lose your mojo. That's how. That's what it looks
- 7:18like. So, you know what I'm hoping is that
- 7:22this really. I want to go to the next season.
- 7:25Like, I'm ready now. I want some refreshment
- 7:29that doesn't mean that I won't have ups and downs and everything will
- 7:33be fabulous. Well, the way it manifests in me
- 7:37is almost like a cat that has been trying to put in
- 7:41water, where I'm like, okay, okay, okay, okay.
- 7:44So what's going to be the next thing you know?
- 7:48So I'm, I'm looking around like, okay, it's a beautiful day,
- 7:53but what's going to happen next? You know? Oh, exactly,
- 7:55Exactly. Yeah, yeah. You're looking for
- 7:59the other shoe to drop, and so it makes you.
- 8:03I think I spoke probably almost every time we
- 8:07meet. I talk about my hypervigilance and I would have been
- 8:11the one who survived the saber tooth tiger, you know, in the village.
- 8:14But I'm constantly on the
- 8:18lookout for bad things,
- 8:21things that can happen,
- 8:25you know, Even when I go to outdoor facilities,
- 8:28I'm scanning the rooftop, you know, is there a sniper up there?
- 8:32I mean, this is not normal,
- 8:36you know. Do you do that, Deborah? Do you do that? Do you
- 8:39get. I mean, because I. Because I carry my gun.
- 8:47Well, that, that's probably why I carry my
- 8:51gun, you know, Because, Because I would think there could be
- 8:55a sniper, but. Well, I mean, no, I. Mine is more intellectual,
- 9:00emotional, where I'm. Because I have a
- 9:04son that has real bad post traumatic stress. And we'll talk about that
- 9:08sometimes later because he was shocked. And so when a voice raises
- 9:13in my house, I'm like, hyper vigilant, you know,
- 9:16I would stop what I'm doing, and I'm not really paying attention to
- 9:20what I'm doing because I'm listening, you know, because he goes through these phases where
- 9:24he has anger, you know. Sure. You know, so that's
- 9:28the way. But I probably would feel that way, too. That's probably why
- 9:32I carry my gun. But, you know, that's funny,
- 9:36because I started. I started carrying a gun after
- 9:41my. My children had had three very critical accidents.
- 9:45Then I started carrying a gun.
- 9:48So, you know, and got a concealed permit.
- 9:52Yeah. Because I was afraid. Okay, so what's
- 9:56next here? You know, a shooter, a sniper? I mean,
- 9:58so. Yeah, yeah. So. And, and, and you
- 10:03forgot to mention something because remember, you must be celebrating
- 10:07your new. Your new marriage. And remember
- 10:12the news you got about your husband? Oh, yeah, okay.
- 10:15All right, that's true. I left that part out. I forgot. So my.
- 10:21When I got married or
- 10:25in the months leading up to getting married,
- 10:30my husband had got a phone call and
- 10:34he had cancer. And it was just a little
- 10:38growth on a lung. And I thought, surely God
- 10:42is Not going to take this husband away. And Deborah, I know,
- 10:46specifically prayed for that. She's like, okay, Deborah's had enough.
- 10:50Please don't let this. This happens. And she's
- 10:55done. So he went into surgery three
- 11:00days after our wedding, and he's fine. I mean,
- 11:04he really is fine. And that was such an answered prayer. So thank
- 11:08you for that. But then I had a health scare,
- 11:12and it wasn't. It wasn't a.
- 11:15It was more. Yeah,
- 11:18but you know what? It wasn't a tabernacle prayer. It was ugly. Like,
- 11:22what are you doing? You can't do this church.
- 11:28And God is so he can handle your anger.
- 11:31Because I was angry.
- 11:34Yeah, for sure.
- 11:37So it just, you know, we've had a lot of
- 11:41things thrown at us, and we haven't even been married three years.
- 11:45And it's health stuff.
- 11:49It's blended family stuff. His father passed.
- 11:53His mother is 90.
- 11:58So we've had to navigate that. And I've
- 12:02already been through that with my parents. And I've seen so many
- 12:07people pass and spoken at so many memorials. I would say in the
- 12:11past seven years that I feel like, well, I'm equipped
- 12:15to do it right. I can. I can do this.
- 12:21But it's sometimes, Deborah, I feel like I just.
- 12:26And next week's going to be great because we will get into this and Vince
- 12:29will talk about that a little bit later. But it's getting your. Your mind
- 12:33right, you know, getting your thoughts right and your heart. Your heart
- 12:37right. Because the heart is really. That's right. More.
- 12:40I think it's several thousand times more magnified than
- 12:44our thoughts, something like that. And so
- 12:49it's getting both of those things lined up. So that's right.
- 12:53Move onward. And you can transition.
- 12:57Because sometimes we're just an enemy to ourselves
- 13:02and God helping us to go forward very
- 13:06much so. That kind of feels like where the two become one. The mind and
- 13:10the heart have to be in sync, but continue on.
- 13:13Yeah, That's a miraculous story. Yeah.
- 13:17So that's been my experience with seasons.
- 13:21I have been seeing butterflies lately, which is a good sign.
- 13:26I'm kind of the butterfly girl, as you can see here.
- 13:32And they're special to me for reasons we'll talk
- 13:36about later, but I've been seeing a lot of them lately.
- 13:40Large ones that are in front of my face. Like, look at me, look at
- 13:44me. Yeah, the monarch. And that's usually a symbol of the monarch.
- 13:47You know, that's interesting because every time I go
- 13:51out on my back and I see. And I see the Monarch. I think
- 13:55of my mother because she loved butterflies. And I took her before
- 13:59she passed. I took her down to Mexico because the
- 14:02monarchs, they. They migrate, you know, And I took her down when they were
- 14:06migrating. And the cab driver's like, senor,
- 14:09get down. Get down. Because she was up on the cliff. Yeah.
- 14:13And every time I see a butterfly, it's like. It's like it
- 14:18touches my heart. Like my. My mom, you know,
- 14:21is in heaven. And, you know, God just gives me a little signal
- 14:25that, you know, everything's gonna be okay. Right? And every morning, there's a big,
- 14:28big, beautiful yellow monarch that comes out.
- 14:32It's almost like he waits for me because I go out every morning with my
- 14:36cup of coffee and sit in the back, and here he comes every
- 14:40morning. So it's actually pretty neat. So,
- 14:44Vince, what is your sweet mama experience with seasons as you move through?
- 14:48Yeah, that's my sweet mom.
- 14:52Yes. Yeah, that's. That's beautiful. You know,
- 14:58so. So. Okay, so I'm.
- 15:02I want to. I just. I'm going to start with a Psalms 1:3.
- 15:08And it's. It's this oxymoron in this statement in this scripture.
- 15:12He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that bringeth
- 15:17forth his fruit in his season. Mm.
- 15:21I want to talk about a few things here, because first
- 15:26of all, bring forth his fruit in
- 15:30his season. Okay? Now I'm.
- 15:34I'm gonna. I have to point something out, because I kind of. I kind of
- 15:37did some research on the scripture many, many years ago,
- 15:42and only female trees make
- 15:47fruit, honey. So we're going to talk about that at some point.
- 15:51Okay. Because that's the oxymoron. Yes. Yeah.
- 15:55Yeah. That's. That's why we don't have any. Any fruit trees, because they're all male,
- 15:59and there's a reason for that. But that's a whole thing. That's a whole nother
- 16:02show. But the oxymoron of that tree
- 16:06itself and being a female and male. Now we'll put that
- 16:10to the side. My experience with
- 16:14seasons.
- 16:19Moving on, knowing when a season is done.
- 16:22It was a little. Multiple times in my. Many, many times in my
- 16:26life. One in particular time, it had to do with a tree.
- 16:30Okay. So I went through men's
- 16:35rights of passage, right. You know,
- 16:38every culture and tribe, society, has a men's
- 16:43rights of passage that they put their boys through to transfer
- 16:47from boyhood into manhood. And when
- 16:52I did mine, I was 51. Wow.
- 16:57Let that sink in. Right? I was 51 years old. When I, when I went
- 17:01through this and actually ahead of the curve.
- 17:07Yeah, I, I, I had an Afro cultist cult back then.
- 17:11Right. And so for
- 17:15me at 50 ish to go through a men's rite
- 17:19of passage, it had, it stung,
- 17:23it hurt. Not the normal type of hurt
- 17:27that I saw the other young men around me going through,
- 17:30which is normal. Right. From boyhood to
- 17:35manhood. But that transfer from that one season to
- 17:39a next season, knowing that that season should have probably have happened a very,
- 17:43very long time ago. So here I am as this adult man going
- 17:47through some things that should have been dealt with a whole long
- 17:51time ago. But I'm dealing with it now. Okay, thank God I'm dealing with
- 17:54it now. So I'm dealing with that.
- 17:57And at one point there's this tribalism
- 18:02things that we go through. I signed an NDA because you can't talk about it
- 18:05but just know I was in the middle of Nash,
- 18:09Tennessee force at about 1:30 in the
- 18:13morning and they intentionally got us out there and got lost.
- 18:16Oh, okay. All I had was off
- 18:20in the distance was hearing some shotguns and some, a bunch of shooting
- 18:24going on and yeah,
- 18:30I was hearing stuff. You know, I'm from Colorado so there's some things I'm used
- 18:33to. Right. But in Colorado, where, you know, we have mountains here and
- 18:37you can actually see the moon. That's right. You get a little something in
- 18:41Tennessee you're not seeing anything. That's true.
- 18:44There's nothing you can see. So anyway. Well, I hope you gleaned
- 18:49some knowledge in part two of Seasons Knowing.
- 18:53Tune in next time when Dr. Vince continues
- 18:57his story about being in the backwoods of Tennessee
- 19:01in the pitch dark with no moon.
- 19:10Hopefully the preceding conversations inspired you to think
- 19:14deeper about your current beliefs. Tune in next time as we'll continue our
- 19:18journey through your self contradictory thoughts. God bless everybody.
- 19:23Sam.
