- 1:19we're going to take a listen to the Royal Street Matter. The original air
- 1:23date was November twenty fifth of nineteen fifty six, and let's take a lesson
- 1:33from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dellar. Why man, how's your
- 1:42stomach? Johnny? What rich food gave any trouble? Who is this boy?
- 1:47Your buddy and your shoti. Oh hi, A gee, glad you
- 1:51got my message. Yeah, how about dinner tonight antoine Johnny shrimp, gumbo,
- 1:57oysters, rockefe Yeah sounds fine. Only I've got to do some work
- 2:00for us. Man. I thought you did New Orleans on vacation. No
- 2:05little matter of fire insurance and the company's check for sixteen thousand. Nobody trying
- 2:08to cheat him out of it. Huh. You won't believe this, anngie.
- 2:12Somebody turned it down. Why Bob Bailey In the Exciting Adventures of a
- 2:24Man with the Action packed Expense account, America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator was truly
- 2:31Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to Providential Fire and
- 2:50Marine seven eighty seven green Leaf Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is
- 2:53an acount of expenses incurred during my investigation of the Royal Street matter expense A
- 3:06count Adam one one hundred three dollars and eighty two cents transportation to New Orleans.
- 3:10I had him two four dollars and twenty cents camp from the airport at
- 3:14the Roosevelt Hotel. After unpacking, I put in the call to my old
- 3:17friend Angie Orsati. Nobody knows the French quarter or the people living there like
- 3:22Angie does. For three months of the winter, he stays in the swamp
- 3:25driving muskrats. The rest of the year he lives with his mother near the
- 3:29cabildo. Angie wasn't in, but his mother said she knew where to reach
- 3:32him, and five minutes later he returned my call. We arranged to meet
- 3:37for dinner. Then I found the agent who had sold the policy in question.
- 3:39His name's Benford, and naturally he was anxious to see me. C.
- 3:45D. Benford's office is on the third floor of the Hibernia Bank building.
- 3:49He's a stocky, red faced man, probably in his late fifties.
- 3:53Come in, mister Dellar, come in, come in, thanks scept the
- 3:57chair. Hey, you fellas, sure don't waste need time? Do We
- 4:00tried not to say, mister prefert a CD boy, you call me CD
- 4:04like all the other folks do. Oh okayee yeah, now like I was
- 4:09saying, you boy, sure don't waste any time. Tall. I didn't
- 4:13even call the home office till day before yesterday, right on when was the
- 4:15fire last week? On Thursday night? Well, did they tell you about
- 4:19it, Well, not very much. Figured i'd get all the information from
- 4:23you. Well, it's a doozy. First time I've ever run across a
- 4:27policyholder. Wasn't young for us to pay him yesterday for his loss today?
- 4:30You know what I mean? Yeah, who is the insured? Mister c
- 4:35D man named Dupa. Henry Dupa took out a policy for forty eight thousand,
- 4:41that's full coverage on his antique shop down on Royal Street. How long
- 4:45ago August, just three months back. I've been after him for maybe five
- 4:49six months to buy some protection, but he kept saying didn't have the money.
- 4:54The money, and one day dropped in see him boy his car insurance,
- 4:57and right off he told me to write a policy give him him full
- 4:59five coverage on the shop. Well, how they arranged to pant cash in
- 5:02full the day I delivered the bouncy. He tell you why he changed his
- 5:06mind? Yeah, not exactly that. He mention something about times being better.
- 5:12I reckon there must have been. Why did he say that? Well,
- 5:15a few days later he had the back part of his shop all painted
- 5:17and fixed up, and that's the part that burned. Andy hired himself a
- 5:21girl to work in the office a real good look or two? Or what
- 5:25caused the fire? You know, I sure do. Anti Kerosene Lamb got
- 5:29knocked over accidental. According to what DuPont told the fireman, he was in
- 5:33the back of the shop with the customer showing in the lamp. Huh when
- 5:36it fell the fire started. The two of them tried to put it out.
- 5:40I reckon. That's why they didn't call the fire department, right or
- 5:43uh? Huh? And did DuPont tell you the same thing, du par
- 5:47He didn't tell me nothing. Well, they reported the fire to you,
- 5:50didn't he? He did not. And that's what's got miss riled up.
- 5:55I wouldn't know about it now if I hadn't dropped in there the other day.
- 5:58Was dupat there when he stopped, Yes, sir, And when I
- 6:01saw the place, Look, the whole back of the store gutted out and
- 6:04the sleeve of his antiques destroyed. I let him have both barrels. I
- 6:09tell you all what he said of that, eh, nothing too much,
- 6:13just acted like he wasn't interested in whether we paid for it or not.
- 6:16Didn't he even ask for a claim for him. It's funny, sure he
- 6:19is. I thought maybe he was so upset over losing some of his valuable
- 6:25antiques. He didn't know what he was doing. So after I checked with
- 6:29the fire department got to copy their report, I tapped up a claim for
- 6:31him. You figured the damage is sixteen thousand, right. I knew how
- 6:36much he spent fixing up the back. When I issued the policy, had
- 6:40gotten an estimate on most of the antiques. So what happened when he gave
- 6:44him the claim he's signing? He did not said to forget about the fire,
- 6:47and when I kept after him, he called me a busy buddy and
- 6:50told me to get out of his shop and stay out. What do you
- 6:54think, CD, You have any idea why he didn't report it or sign
- 6:58and claim. If I had, boy, I wouldn't have sent for you.
- 7:03I left Benfret's office and walked over to Canal Street. The sun had
- 7:08gone down and a cool breeze was coming in off the river, bringing with
- 7:12it the smell of coffee beans and fruit from the banana boats. I crossed
- 7:15Canal and turned onto Royal, heading into the French Quarter. When I reached
- 7:20Henry Dupat's antique shop, I stopped. There are a lot of antique shops
- 7:25on Royal. All of them look pretty much the same, the buildings as
- 7:29old as the fine rose wooden mahogany pieces they shelled me. There was nothing
- 7:32different about this one, at least from the outside. The pirates started and
- 7:36finished in the rear of the building. I tried the front door, but
- 7:40it was locked. I didn't think anyone would be there that late, but
- 7:44I knocked anyway, as who is it, mister Dupa? Who is it?
- 8:01My name's Dollar, mister Dupa. I represent the Providential Fire Marine.
- 8:05Why do you people persist in annoying me? Well, we wouldn't if you'd
- 8:11tell us about the fire. There's nothing special about that fire, mister Dollar.
- 8:16It was an accident. Well then why didn't you file a claim?
- 8:18You're entitled to enough money to cover you. Mister Benford explained that to me
- 8:22quite carefully. If you haven't talked to him, mister Dollar, you show
- 8:26oh I've talked to him, well, then go away. Well not until
- 8:30you answer a few questions. Leave me alone, please. I'd noticed an
- 8:37alley next to the shop that then died where the rear door had been.
- 8:39I started back along and not quite sure what I was looking for or what
- 8:43I expected to find, but I was sure of one thing. Dupa was
- 8:46a frightened man. It was too daric to see anything at the end of
- 8:48the alley, so I returned to the street, ID them three thirty dollars
- 8:54fifty cents, phone call, taxi and dinner for two at Antoine's. Oh
- 9:00Man, kind of nice, ain't it, Johnny? Oh the way it
- 9:03never changes, same waiters, same chef, same clientele. Yeah, like
- 9:09another Cafe Royale, isn't she? No no things? Well, Johnny?
- 9:16Yeah, Well, when you're gonna ask me, ask you what? Oh,
- 9:20don't kid me, john You had that old bloodhound look in your eye
- 9:24ever since we sat down. What's the question? Okay, Angie, what
- 9:30do you know about a man named Henry Dupa? Dupas antique shop? That's
- 9:35right? Not much seen him around something though, Yeah, were Oh you
- 9:39know what kind of places? I like? Johnny? Yeah, but I
- 9:43can't picture to Paul like, well, maybe he don't, but maybe that
- 9:46little old blond he's been carrying with him does. Why. Yeah, you
- 9:50know female girl bleach tag I know. Yeah? Oh oh twenty four or
- 9:56five? Yeah, real nice, so coot like him? Real winter in
- 10:01spring? Huh Yeah, you've seen them together often a few times. Saw
- 10:05him about two weeks ago at Butch's place. Hey, he knows something.
- 10:09I walked in there that night with a five, and I walked out with
- 10:11two hundred. How about that? Great? You know who the blonde is?
- 10:16No, but I might be able to find out. You want?
- 10:18Yeah? I want. I left Angie and started back toward Royal Street.
- 10:26On the way, I ran up on him four one dollar eighty five cents
- 10:30for one flashlight of batteries. The shades under Par's shop were drawn, but
- 10:33I could tell the wa lights on inside. In the alley, a small
- 10:37pickup truck was parked near the side entrance to the shop. In the back
- 10:41of the truck looking like they'd just been taking off the boat with several stalks
- 10:45of bananas. There wasn't much else to see except the charred wood and refuse
- 10:48left in the alley after the fire. I started back toward the street.
- 10:52What a man, a much larger man than the park came out the side
- 10:54door and got into the truck. He turned over the engine and switched on
- 10:58the lights before I could get clear. Hey, what are you doing there?
- 11:07Holding mister right there? Hey, why do you just hold it.
- 11:13How are you doing back there? Huh? All right, now, mister,
- 11:15I'm wondering what this lord of bananas is doing in an antique shop.
- 11:18What is it called? I just caught this guy snooping around the back.
- 11:22What it's mister doll? Yeah, that's right, you know him, depart.
- 11:28He's one of those insurance men I told you about. Oh oh,
- 11:33what are you here for? Dolla? Dupat tell you he doesn't want any
- 11:35money from you people. Now, why not? Because he's afraid we might
- 11:39have to take a good look around before paying. Now. Now, look,
- 11:43dollar, Dupa has been okay with you people, so you got no
- 11:48reason to come snooping around, especially after he's told you he don't want you
- 11:52outd So now maybe mister dupar will have to do something to keep you away.
- 11:58That right, mister, you know what I mean? Yes, it's
- 12:03all right, I'll do it and he'll never bother us again. Go one
- 12:07dollar, get out of here. At the time, I had no idea
- 12:11what they meant to do, so it wasn't easy to turn my back on
- 12:15them, but I did. Nothing happened. I went back to my hotel
- 12:20and hit the sack and I must confess I slept later than usual. The
- 12:22next morning. I was still in bed when the phone rang Johnny Dollar.
- 12:33Why now, where's my dynamic northern friend. Oh, he's off today.
- 12:37I'm taking this place. Well in the news, I got. Well,
- 12:41I reckon he'll keep till tomorrow. Yeah, well, so long? No
- 12:45no wait, wait, wait, angie, did you find out anything about
- 12:48that blond Dupot's been seeing? Sure, everybody around the French market coffee shop
- 12:52used to know, used to meaning up till she went to work for mister
- 12:56Dupa. She worked for DuPont in the office of his store, started in
- 13:01there about three months ago. Well, come on, well, since then,
- 13:05nobody sees her anymore, at least none of her old game. You
- 13:09know where she lives? Yep, the bond Alva apartments, that is,
- 13:13unless she is moved. What's her name? Rose Ellen? What? Yeah,
- 13:18she used to be a dancer and enough fraid to go on. Yeah,
- 13:20and she thanks. That's plenty. Expense account at him five one dollar
- 13:28and forty cents cab fare from my hotel to the Pontalba apartments. The list
- 13:31of names on the register near the manager's office told me rose Ellen's apartment was
- 13:35number two fifteen. But when I got up there, the girl who opened
- 13:39the door wasn't a blonde. Yeah, oh, I'm looking for miss Rose
- 13:48ellens Is. Oh she had work. Who are you? I mean,
- 13:54are you a friend? Agree? My name is Dollar, Johnny Dollar.
- 13:56I'm an insurance investigator and bet but she hasn't done anything, has she?
- 14:03Well, not that I know of. Look, miss Garble Garbo May Garble.
- 14:09You're a dancer, aren't you. How'd you get Oh? I'm good
- 14:13at recognizing telling. Oh would you like to come in? And I've got
- 14:18some coffee on? Well? He just fine. Say you've certainly got a
- 14:26nice view of a square from here, I suppose, don't you think so?
- 14:30Oh sure if you like that sort of thing. Me. I just
- 14:33think the square is kind of square. Oh that's good. The day we
- 14:39moved here, you and Rose moving here together. Oh, sit down,
- 14:43Johning, make yourself at home. Gee, you're so polite you wait to
- 14:50be asked. Look, tell me what time do you think Rose will be
- 14:54home? Oh? I can say, uh, may this is important?
- 14:58What time does she usually get home? Well? I do? I mean,
- 15:03after all, she's got her own life to live, you know,
- 15:05And I'm not her keeper. Okay, okay, sometimes she doesn't get home
- 15:09for days. Oh, I better get the coffee. Did you ever say
- 15:13anything to you about the fire? Yeah? What fire down at the antique
- 15:18shop and sugar? No thanks, just black? When was that fire last
- 15:28Thursday night? That's funny? What's funny? That was the last time I
- 15:33saw her? What? Yeah, Rose went to work last Thursday, but
- 15:39she never came home. Act two of Yours, Truly, Johnny Dollar.
- 15:58In a moment, you don't have to be a special investigator to know that
- 16:03Americans don't take their civic responsibilities lightly. The election day turn off proved that
- 16:10beyond any shadow of doubt. So now it's time for you to face up
- 16:14to another responsibility to the nation in just as straightforward a way. Our Grand
- 16:18Observer Corps needs volunteers. We at CBS Radio urge you to write or telephone
- 16:26your nearest civil defense center to learn how you can help in this vast program
- 16:30that patrols our skies. Now, Act two of Yours, Truly, Johnny
- 16:36Dollar, and the Royal Street matters. This was the screwiest deal I've ever
- 16:49seen. A guy refusing insurance money he was entitled to Rosellem was my one
- 16:56lead, so I continued questioning May, her roommate. He told me this
- 17:00was the first time Rose had been away so long without at least sending for
- 17:03a change of clothes. I asked about Rose's boyfriends. She told me Rose
- 17:07had been going with one other man beside Dupa, but she didn't know who
- 17:11he was. After May promised to call me if she heard from Roselle and
- 17:15I left Expenser Conad. H'm six one dollars ninety cents taxi from the Pontalba
- 17:19apartments to the Hibernia Bank building. My insurance contact, Benford, wasn't it.
- 17:25So While I waited for him, I wondered again why Dupad refused to
- 17:29sign the claim for the fire damage to his shot. Could he afford a
- 17:33loss of sixteen thousand dollars? I wondered if something had happened in that shop,
- 17:38something Dupad tried to cover up with a fire. I was wondering what
- 17:42it could have been when Benford walked, well, I'm glad you are here,
- 17:47Johnny. We got trouble. Huh. I hear you paid Dupa call
- 17:52last night? That where you've been? Yeah? He pulled me about ten
- 17:56wanted me there fast. Oh boy, I said, hint up stairway.
- 18:00Well what happens? He d And before I tell you that, you tell
- 18:03me what he said to you last night. Nothing important, just something about
- 18:07fixing it. So I couldn't bother him again. Oh well he did.
- 18:11Huh he cancel his fire insurance policy and every other policy ever brought from me
- 18:17cancer yet, So you might as well go on back to your hotel and
- 18:19pack. Johnny, it's none of your affair now, no matter what he's
- 18:22up to. M man, it's too bad I had to turn out this
- 18:27way. Want drink before you go? I guess I need one? Yeah,
- 18:33that'd be Scotch Scott sneakless good. He was making a mess when you
- 18:41reckon you leave? Oh no, no, I'll check with the airline when
- 18:45I get back to the hotel. Y nice? Did elect next to that?
- 19:00Yeah? That's that CD. What about the policy policy? Did he
- 19:08return the policy to you? No? I said, do tomorrow. But
- 19:14he's covered until he does return it. Does he know that? Why?
- 19:18No? I don't recommend that. God God, he might get careless.
- 19:22And as long as that policy is in force, I can bother him as
- 19:26much as I want. Oh, I don't see what to use Johnny,
- 19:29He'll have it here a boy tomorrow evening. That still gives me twenty four
- 19:32hours to get lucky. CD, you said something about a customer being with
- 19:34him when that kerosene lamp was knocked over. According to what he told the
- 19:38fire department, there was you had that person's name. Well I should have.
- 19:41I took it from the fire department report and I got that right here.
- 19:47Uh yeah, here it is now, let's see m M. The
- 19:51name was Andrew W. DeLong Undress fifteen to fifteen Wist Clayburne. There wasn't
- 20:06any Andrew DeLong at that address. We checked the telephone book and the city
- 20:10directory, and the only Andrew W. DeLong we found was out in metry
- 20:15in a mausoleum. So we drove back towards CD's office. Well, now
- 20:23what Jerny Dupais? Find out everything we can about du Pais, and everybody
- 20:29who works for him ain't nobody, but he's secretary, his assistant. Tell
- 20:33the name Carr. Yeah, how long has Carl been working for him?
- 20:36About as long as she has this? This Karl on a fruit stand of
- 20:40fruit. I know, Bob, I just wondered, Hey, what time
- 20:45is it? CD two fifteen? Say, if we're going to check on
- 20:48Dupau's credit, we better get to the bank for the clue you're driving.
- 20:52Let's move expense account at him seven twenty two dollars and eighty cents telephone call
- 21:00and a couple of gratuities to obtain a lot of information about Dupa. I
- 21:03learned, among other things, that he banked almost eleven thousand dollars in the
- 21:07past three months. Before that, almost nothing, But there's no law against
- 21:12making money, so I still had nothing concrete to go on. At fine
- 21:17point thirty, I left Benford, went back to my hotel and they found
- 21:18a message from me, Rose Allen's roommate, asking me to go to her
- 21:22apartment immediately. So I did. Oh, John, Yeah, Hi,
- 21:27may Oh come in Johnny? You know what you made me promise? Yeah?
- 21:37What happened? You mean you've heard from Rose? Well no, not
- 21:41exactly, but a man called this afternoon and talked about her. Oh well,
- 21:45I hope he had only nice things to say. Oh, yes,
- 21:48he said she's just fine. What didn't you hear me? Yeah, he
- 21:52said she's fine fine. What else did he say? Well, he said
- 21:56he was going to come by at four o'clock and pick up her clothes.
- 22:00I should have them ready, but of course he didn't. Well he did,
- 22:03so he did. What man? You know him? You get his
- 22:07name, mister dollar. You don't think I'd let Roses things go out of
- 22:12here with a complete stranger, do you? Of course he told me his
- 22:17name. Well you aren't nearly as polite as you were this morning. All
- 22:22right, I'm sorry. What's the man's name, darling? Oh, well
- 22:26that's much better. It's Grant. Grant, that's right. From the way
- 22:32he talked. He must be the one Rose was going with while she was
- 22:36dating that old antique. You ever see this guy Grant before? No,
- 22:38but I'm sure he's the one she talked about. Really, it used to
- 22:41get so tiresome. Carl is and Carl does that what I said? Oh?
- 22:47May tell me? Where did he say he was taking her clothes?
- 22:49He didn't say, just put them in that old truck, ik, sweetheart,
- 22:52seal you later. I needed a fast car and a driver who can
- 22:56handle it, so I called Angelo Arsati. On of minutes later, we
- 23:00parked in front of Dupaw's antique shop. There was a dim light on inside.
- 23:07Look, brother, there's really no reason for you to get mixed up
- 23:10in this thing? Are you kidding? So hmmm? It was like Dupa
- 23:15ain't all right, Let's see what this honk of stone will do to the
- 23:18glass here? That guy I can reach suit to Locke looks like nobody here.
- 23:33Well hey wait a minute, yeah, I see him. Carl,
- 23:38what happened to you do Angie col an ambulance? Tell him my man's been
- 23:44stabbed here? Yeah right, John, all get to before he can.
- 23:51Dupam gonna kill Rose. You got to help her. Dupa wants to kill
- 24:00her. Wif she she found out smuggling? Is that what departs? Went
- 24:07up to smuggling? And but then the shipments Rose found out worrishing he thought
- 24:17I'd killed him, but I love her. Yeah, well look tell me
- 24:21you you gotta get to her before he does. Oh Spanish fort Yeah,
- 24:30I n by you slide down all Spanish Fortress on the piper slide down.
- 24:34Yeah you know where that is? Ji? Oh sure, old ruin out
- 24:37in the swamp north of town near the highway bridge. It goes over to
- 24:41the Gulf coast. Carl, how long ago to Dupa leive? Ten or
- 24:47fifteen minutes. Yeah, well we could beat him, Johnny, by cutting
- 24:49across the swamps, that is, if you could take it. What do
- 24:52you mean by that? Well, it's rugged, like what, Johnny,
- 24:56did you ever ride a swamp buggy? Oh? Brother? How much farther?
- 25:10And she? Well should be right up ahead? How can you tell?
- 25:12All I can see is swamp with marsh brass. Yeah. Well,
- 25:17I've done a lot of tramping out here. I know the channel they gonna
- 25:21make the old ruins before Dupi. Well we got to, don't we.
- 25:25Hey, that kid that old record is called a fortress man. That's it.
- 25:30We'll get us something as close to it as you can. I don't
- 25:33see anybody plot somebody approaching the bridge here we are, Come on, let's
- 25:42go. Hey, Hey, look, john There she is at the side
- 25:47end. Yeah, I see Rose Rose Ellen. He's scared. She dumped
- 25:52back inside. Rose. We're friends of Carls. They sent us to help
- 25:56you. Come on, Johnny, we can get inside to her through this
- 26:00here doorway. Okay, this place looks like it's if I ready to fall
- 26:07apart, Rose, damn man dark in here too. Don't step on the
- 26:14fallen bridge, Rose, Rose Ellen Yeah, where did Carl DuPont tried to
- 26:26kill him? Rose? Come on out here where we can see you.
- 26:32Rose, I found out that Carl didn't kill me. Is that it?
- 26:40Yeah? But Courl's all right now. Look Rose, I want you to
- 26:45tell me all you know about the fire at Upa Shopping Were you there or
- 26:48what happened? I had me tied up, told Carl I'd found out what
- 26:53they were doing smuggling. I mean, he told Carl to kill me.
- 26:59He didn't know Karl and I was going to be married. Go on,
- 27:02go on. Karl argued with him. That's when the lamp got knocked over.
- 27:07He didn't stop arguing until deposit he'd kill us both. So finally How
- 27:12told Dupie he'd take care of me. He had to. Du Paw would
- 27:17have killed us, but instead Carl brought you here. Yeah. Oh,
- 27:18come on, Johnny, let's get out of this doc. What a minute,
- 27:22Rose? Do you know why Dupa was afraid to report his fire to
- 27:26the insurance company. Some of the things he smuggled in was lost in the
- 27:29fire. Anybody come poking around, they might have find out what he's doing.
- 27:33What was he smuggling? Do you know, little tiny boxes built with
- 27:37quiet powder hidden in the bananas. Johnny, No I caught. Yeah,
- 27:41sure, no wonder he banks so much money so fast. I bank much
- 27:45more. I get rid of you. Donald. Look at that. Yeah,
- 27:48here's the door. Yeah, I watch you see. I hate fooling.
- 27:56He can't see us. No, what a target he makes in the
- 27:59toy against the light. No gun, No, we can try one of
- 28:03these bricks. Yeahs dah whish we look dala right here to Pa. Come
- 28:18on, oh man, dear, you could qualify for the New York Yankees.
- 28:26Johnny, all right, Japa on your feet, let's get out of
- 28:30here. Expense acount total including a rental on the swamp buggy, incidentals and
- 28:40transportation back to Hartford five hundred and seventeen dollars and twenty cents. Remarks,
- 28:45Well, where he's going to, PA wouldn't have any use for the insurance
- 28:48money anyway, Kyle Grant turned state's evidence and clinched the smuggling charges against him.
- 28:55Because of that, Carol may get off easy, I hope. So
- 28:59he and Rose could make a very heavy couple. And it remarks, and

- 30:22same time and station, or another exciting story of yours truly, Johnny
- 30:27Dollar, Dan Cumberly speaking, Welcome back, Johnny. One thing you need
- 31:37to work on is when you question people when you're on the run from a
- 31:42murderer. Would be murderer now isn't all the time for detailed depositions, But
- 31:48in all serious this was a seriousness. This was a great story. I
- 31:53love Johnny's friend. I like the whole setup with this great new street of
- 32:00why he's not taking the insurance settlement. You know, it's when you think
- 32:04about it, it's a little absurd, and I think it's something realistically an
- 32:08insurance company would be wondering about. Of course, they would probably not care
- 32:13too much once he decided to cancel the policy, but then there's the nature
- 32:17of Johnny Dollar. So this was really fun. It was as good as
- 32:22I remembered it, and I hope you enjoyed it as well. Rebecca,
- 32:27we turn out, I should say, the listener comments and feedback. Rebecca
- 32:30says on Facebook, my favorite old time radio detective. We just got back
- 32:35from a month at our home in southern Baha, Mexico, and again your
- 32:38podcasts were a great way to pass our time without internet or TV. Thanks
- 32:44for the great job you do with the great detectives of old time radio podcast.
- 32:49Thank you very much. Uh and then I comment on podcast ally thanks
- 32:54to Adam for bringing us these classic programs. I love listening to these while
- 32:58I work. My favorite yours truly, Johnny Doller. But there are so
- 33:01many good shows. Adam does a great job providing commentary to this nostalgic podcast.
- 33:07Brings it back to a better time in American entertainment. I listen every
- 33:12day and always look forward to the next episode. And that's from the Lando
- 33:16Family on podcast Alley all right, And if you've not yet listened to the
- 33:21Phantom Chase Matter, if you just happen to join the show, you may
- 33:27want to skip to the end of the podcast. But for everyone else,
- 33:30vow comments regarding the Phantom Chase Matter. Loath as I am to criticize Johnny,
- 33:40my great detective's fantasy boyfriend, I can't help think that by simply asking
- 33:46the hotel manager to describe the gorgeous woman who reserved the motel room, or
- 33:54even showing him or photograph, he could have had the case wrapped up a
- 34:00whole lot sooner and reduced the expense account considerably. As soon as the hotel
- 34:05employee said, what a looker she was, I thought, uh huh,
- 34:12well, thanks for the comment, vow. And I think that when you
- 34:19look at the Venom Chase matter, when we got to part nine of that
- 34:22serial, several things that we thought to be the case were turned on their
- 34:27head. And certainly I think that the big problem that Johnny had was he
- 34:32was just not open to the possibility of seeing those things, since he had
- 34:39deduced what he thought had happened with the husband running away with another woman lost.
- 34:45The judgments that Johnny had made partially influenced very heavily by the person who
- 34:52was actually her co conspirator. And I think there is this certain thing in
- 34:58fiction and in real life where people and we actually there is an episode of
- 35:06suspense will play one of these days called The blind Side where that's explored.
- 35:12But there is this thing where we have these psychological expectations of the way people
- 35:21are, the way things are, and even though it might seem obvious to
- 35:24an outsider who as a particularly as we are trained, trained, but experienced
- 35:31observers and listeners to mystery, we don't not suspect anyone. With Johnny,
- 35:37it's a different matter we us in some ways, Johnny tends to be a
- 35:42little bit less cynical. Probably a detective like Sam Spade would have wrapped this
- 35:47case up in short order. And even Barry Craig, who has a pretty
- 35:52sunny disposition but is taken in by no one, could have probably solved this
- 35:59quick. But Johnny has this ability. Johnny Doller has this ability just to
- 36:05really latch on and care about and have very chivalrous feelings about certain women.
- 36:13And generally he's not a fool. He's and he's been around the bend a
- 36:17few times. He's still vulnerable allowing a suspect to just totally blindside him.
- 36:25But the things that make him vulnerable in that way, I think is part
- 36:30of what makes the character so interesting to listen to. All Right, well,
- 36:36that will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with Police Headquarters,
- 36:42and then join us back here next Friday for another episode of Yours Truly
- 36:45Johnny Doller. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great
