- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And it came to pass after a
- 0:04Speaker 1: while that the brook dried up because there had been
- 0:08Speaker 1: no rain in the land. 1 Kings 17.7 Dear God,
- 0:14Speaker 1: when there is a drought in the world and recessions
- 0:17Speaker 1: in our economy, I will look to you to provide
- 0:21Speaker 1: for myself and those I love, like you did for
- 0:25Speaker 1: the prophet Elijah by the brook. In the same miraculous manner,
- 0:30Speaker 1: I thank you that, like the ravens you sustain, you
- 0:34Speaker 1: will nourish me through miraculous connections and divine relationships. Place
- 0:41Speaker 1: an internal clock within me to know when it's time
- 0:44Speaker 1: to move on to the next season of my journey.
- 0:48Speaker 1: As I move in obedience, give me the faith to
- 0:51Speaker 1: move as the widow did, knowing that if God said it,
- 0:56Speaker 1: he will be faithful to perform it. Even when my
- 0:59Speaker 1: dreams seem like they're dying, I thank you that when
- 1:03Speaker 1: I call upon your name, you will resurrect what seemed
- 1:08Speaker 1: to be dead and breathe new life into the promises
- 1:12Speaker 1: in my life. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for
- 1:20Speaker 1: praying with us today. Continue your time with God by
- 1:23Speaker 1: listening to today's Bible story, brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Elijah and the Drought In our last story, we were
- 1:42Speaker 2: introduced to more kings of Judah. Abijah ruled with a
- 1:47Speaker 2: brutal fist and sinful arrogance. His son, Athah, ruled with
- 1:52Speaker 2: the fear of God and a righteous heart. Athah was
- 1:56Speaker 2: able to topple idols in Judah and bring the people
- 1:59Speaker 2: of God back to their first love. Israel, however, was
- 2:03Speaker 2: still descending into the pit of idol worship and despair.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Now we are introduced to a dominant force for the
- 2:11Speaker 2: kingdom of God, Elijah. He showcases the beginning of a
- 2:15Speaker 2: cosmic battle between the true God of heaven and earth
- 2:19Speaker 2: and the false god, Baal. Elijah is able to witness
- 2:23Speaker 2: the true control and discipline of the Lord as well
- 2:26Speaker 2: as his provision over the faithful, inspired by the book
- 2:30Speaker 2: of 1 Kings.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:36Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. In our last episode, we heard
- 2:40Speaker 3: about King Asa, who unlike his father and grandfather, was
- 2:44Speaker 3: a man who sought God. He sought God's favor and
- 2:48Speaker 3: acted faithfully towards the Lord. He removed idols and banished
- 2:53Speaker 3: the cult worship of false gods from Judah. Asa was
- 2:57Speaker 3: a good king, and through his leadership and legacy, the
- 3:01Speaker 3: people's hearts turned back to the Lord. To the north
- 3:05Speaker 3: of Judah, however, the people's hearts were still very far
- 3:08Speaker 3: from God. And as we'll learn today, God was about
- 3:11Speaker 3: to do great things through a man named Elijah, a
- 3:15Speaker 3: prophet who would contend on God's behalf with the rampant
- 3:19Speaker 3: worship of Baal in Israel. Elijah is a powerful prophet
- 3:23Speaker 3: from God, and he will stand true in a faithless generation.
- 3:28Speaker 3: How thankful we are for the story of Elijah. Let's
- 3:32Speaker 3: begin listening now to God's Word.
- 3:35Speaker 2: A dry wind was scratching across the ground of Israel.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Plants became blighted and began to wither under the heat. Elijah,
- 3:43Speaker 2: a chosen man of God, looked upon the destitute land
- 3:47Speaker 2: with sorrow. He saw the flowers beginning to curl up
- 3:51Speaker 2: and pass into the ground. He witnessed the livestock lose
- 3:55Speaker 2: their luster and slow down into a pause. The Lord
- 3:59Speaker 2: spoke closely into his ear. There will be no rain
- 4:02Speaker 2: until I give the word, God whispered. Elijah turned away
- 4:07Speaker 2: from the fields and walked towards the palace gates. He
- 4:10Speaker 2: needed to relay the message to Ahab, king over Israel.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Elijah opened the doors into Ahab's halls. The blighted wind
- 4:19Speaker 2: blew violently as he opened the doors. Sand made its
- 4:23Speaker 2: way inside. Ahab sat among some of his counselors. He
- 4:27Speaker 2: looked up at Elijah and listened to the word of God.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Once Elijah was finished, he left silently and awaited a
- 4:34Speaker 2: word from the Lord. Venture forth towards the east, God
- 4:38Speaker 2: told him. Hide underneath the tree covering beside the brook
- 4:42Speaker 2: of Kareth. Drink from the brook and eat the food
- 4:46Speaker 2: I bring you. I will send ravens to give you food.
- 4:50Speaker 2: So Elijah camped beside the brook for a long while.
- 4:53Speaker 2: He sat beside the waters. The shade of the trees
- 4:56Speaker 2: and coolness of the water protected him from the hot
- 4:59Speaker 2: winds coursing through Israel. The Lord provided for him. Ravens
- 5:04Speaker 2: brought him food daily, and Elijah sat in the presence
- 5:08Speaker 2: of God, soaking in his goodness. The two were close
- 5:12Speaker 2: as David once was with God in the wilderness. Elijah
- 5:15Speaker 2: watched the brook as the weeks passed. Since there was
- 5:19Speaker 2: no dew or rainfall, the river began to dry up.
- 5:23Speaker 2: There was no more protection for him. God came to
- 5:26Speaker 2: Elijah again. He spoke clearly and tenderly, saying, Go to
- 5:31Speaker 2: the village of Zarephath. I have spoken to a widow
- 5:35Speaker 2: who lives there. She will provide for you. So Elijah
- 5:39Speaker 2: went and arrived at the gates. Just as God had said,
- 5:43Speaker 2: a widow was in the front gathering sticks for her fire.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Elijah smiled and said, Would you be able to spare
- 5:50Speaker 2: a little water? The widow grinned and agreed. She gathered
- 5:54Speaker 2: some water. Would you be able to spare some food
- 5:57Speaker 2: as well? Elijah asked. The widow's grin turned upside down.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Her shoulders slumped and her lips were parsed together. I
- 6:06Speaker 2: swear by the Lord, I have not one crumb of
- 6:09Speaker 2: bread to give you. Her lips began to quiver and
- 6:12Speaker 2: she put her hands over her face. Elijah watched as
- 6:15Speaker 2: the widow began to cry. I have a handful of
- 6:18Speaker 2: flour and a little cooking oil at the bottom of
- 6:21Speaker 2: my jug. The sticks I was gathering was to make
- 6:24Speaker 2: a fire. The woman raised her eyes to Elijah and said,
- 6:28Speaker 2: This is going to be my son's last meal before
- 6:31Speaker 2: he dies. Elijah placed his hands on her shoulders. He
- 6:35Speaker 2: looked her in the eyes and smiled, saying, Fear not.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Go and prepare your bread. Make some bread for all
- 6:42Speaker 2: three of us, and we will witness the faithfulness of God.
- 6:47Speaker 2: So the widow prepared the bread. She added water to
- 6:50Speaker 2: the flour and began to bake the mix. To her surprise,
- 6:53Speaker 2: the dough expanded far beyond her expectation. The widow watched
- 6:58Speaker 2: as she had enough bread to feed all three of
- 7:00Speaker 2: them for weeks. The three of them ate and rejoiced
- 7:04Speaker 2: in the provision of God. Weeks had passed. Elijah, the widow,
- 7:09Speaker 2: and her son had feasted in the glory of God. However,
- 7:12Speaker 2: the woman's son became very sick. His fever became unmanageable,
- 7:17Speaker 2: and his body began to fade. Finally, with great struggle,
- 7:21Speaker 2: the boy passed. Elijah was broken, and the widow was unconsolable.
- 7:26Speaker 2: The woman cried out to Elijah, saying,' O man of God,
- 7:30Speaker 2: what have you done to me and my boy? It
- 7:32Speaker 2: is you who has killed my son!' Elijah said nothing
- 7:36Speaker 2: as the woman wailed before him. She beat her fists
- 7:39Speaker 2: on his chest and fell to her knees. Elijah looked
- 7:43Speaker 2: to the boy's body and walked towards it. He picked
- 7:46Speaker 2: him up and carried him upstairs into the upper room
- 7:48Speaker 2: of the house. He laid the child down. Tears dripped
- 7:52Speaker 2: down his face and landed beside the boy's lifeless body.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Elijah sobbed and laid over him. Muffled prayers could be
- 8:01Speaker 2: heard from Elijah. My God! Why have you brought tragedy
- 8:05Speaker 2: to this woman? She has shown me kindness. Elijah stretched
- 8:09Speaker 2: his body over the child, crying out to the Lord. Please,
- 8:13Speaker 2: Elijah whispered, let him live. And as Elijah was speaking,
- 8:18Speaker 2: he felt the boy's arm twitch. Elijah leaped up to
- 8:22Speaker 2: his feet as he watched the boy's chest begin to
- 8:25Speaker 2: rise and fall. God had breathed life into him. The
- 8:29Speaker 2: widow was still on the floor downstairs. She heard screaming
- 8:32Speaker 2: from the upper room as Elijah yelled. Elijah rushed down
- 8:36Speaker 2: the stairs, holding the child, yelling, He lives! He lives!
- 8:40Speaker 2: The three of them rejoiced. Elijah was able to witness
- 8:43Speaker 2: the power and provision of God in the midst of
- 8:45Speaker 2: a famine. It would be these events that strengthened his
- 8:49Speaker 2: resolve to follow God. Elijah would not bend in his
- 8:53Speaker 2: faithfulness to him. Many battles awaited Elijah. And God would
- 8:58Speaker 2: require him to stand firm.
- 9:02Speaker 3: As we begin the scripture today, we're introduced to a
- 9:05Speaker 3: name that is going to be a well-known great name
- 9:09Speaker 3: in the word of God. A man who walked with
- 9:12Speaker 3: the Lord, a powerful prophet. Elijah received a message from
- 9:16Speaker 3: the Lord that he delivered to Israel's King Ahab. The
- 9:20Speaker 3: land was about to be plunged into devastating drought. The
- 9:23Speaker 3: rains would cease and the clouds would not release their
- 9:26Speaker 3: nourishing waters until God gave word for the rain to return.
- 9:30Speaker 3: And with that, Elijah departed, led by God to the
- 9:34Speaker 3: east where he was hidden by the brook Kareth. As
- 9:38Speaker 3: David had written in his most famous psalm, Elijah experienced
- 9:42Speaker 3: the hand of God leading him beside still waters, providing
- 9:46Speaker 3: for his physical needs as he drank from the brook
- 9:49Speaker 3: and ate food brought by ravens God had sent him,
- 9:52Speaker 3: but also providing for his spiritual needs and preparing him
- 9:56Speaker 3: for big spiritual battles. We must never forget that God
- 10:01Speaker 3: will always provide for our needs in every circumstances, that
- 10:06Speaker 3: he makes provision for us, and that he provides for
- 10:09Speaker 3: what we need just as he did Elijah when we
- 10:12Speaker 3: obey him. After some time, the brook Kareth dried up
- 10:17Speaker 3: because the drought was intense. So God sent Elijah to
- 10:21Speaker 3: the town of Zarephath, telling him there was a widow
- 10:24Speaker 3: there whom God had told to feed the prophet. Just
- 10:27Speaker 3: as God had said, there was indeed a widow there
- 10:30Speaker 3: that lived with her son. Elijah asked her for water,
- 10:34Speaker 3: and she gladly brought him the water. But when Elijah
- 10:38Speaker 3: asked for a morsel of bread, the woman became very sad.
- 10:43Speaker 3: For you see, the famine and drought had devastated the
- 10:45Speaker 3: land and this woman had no food to give, no
- 10:48Speaker 3: food to spare. She told Elijah that the little bit
- 10:52Speaker 3: of flour and oil that she had was only enough
- 10:54Speaker 3: for her and her son to eat a final meal
- 10:56Speaker 3: before they died. But Elijah would not be deterred because
- 11:02Speaker 3: God had provided for him at the brook. He trusted
- 11:06Speaker 3: God to provide for him now as well. He told
- 11:10Speaker 3: the woman not to fear or to be sad but
- 11:13Speaker 3: to go and do as she had planned, to make
- 11:16Speaker 3: a fire. But Elijah said she was to make a
- 11:19Speaker 3: small cake of flour and oil for him, then make
- 11:22Speaker 3: some for herself and her son. Then he said to
- 11:27Speaker 3: her what we read in 1 Kings 17, verse 14.
- 11:31Speaker 3: For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, the
- 11:33Speaker 3: jar of flour shall not be spent and the jug
- 11:36Speaker 3: of oil shall not be empty until the day that
- 11:39Speaker 3: the Lord sends rains upon the earth. Elijah was inviting
- 11:44Speaker 3: this woman to join him in trusting God for a miracle.
- 11:48Speaker 3: The small amount of flour and oil was just that,
- 11:51Speaker 3: pitifully small, not enough for even one person, let alone three.
- 11:56Speaker 3: But God always richly supplies everything to us, especially those
- 12:01Speaker 3: of us who are in Christ Jesus. And God was
- 12:04Speaker 3: promising to provide that from a small amount there is
- 12:07Speaker 3: an inexhaustible supply until rain would return to Israel. And
- 12:12Speaker 3: God will supply all of your needs according to his
- 12:15Speaker 3: riches and glory in Jesus Christ. We're told that in
- 12:19Speaker 3: the New Testament. So a great miracle took place. And
- 12:24Speaker 3: for weeks, the widow and the son and Elijah ate
- 12:28Speaker 3: the food and it never ran out. God, as always,
- 12:32Speaker 3: kept his promise. Then one day, the widow's son fell
- 12:36Speaker 3: sick and died. The widow, of course, was distraught, despairing,
- 12:41Speaker 3: wondering why such tragedy had come upon her. So Elijah,
- 12:46Speaker 3: always trusting in God, always believing in God, trusting God
- 12:50Speaker 3: for another miracle, took the boy to an upper room
- 12:53Speaker 3: where he was staying and cried out to God, laying
- 12:56Speaker 3: his body over the boy's body and asking God to
- 12:59Speaker 3: bring life back into this child. God heard Elijah's prayer,
- 13:04Speaker 3: and the boy was filled with life again. This was
- 13:08Speaker 3: a resurrection. This is, of course, an amazing, powerful miracle.
- 13:14Speaker 3: God showed Elijah what we can know with confidence, that
- 13:18Speaker 3: not even death, because of what Jesus Christ has done
- 13:21Speaker 3: for us, will keep us in the grave, that there
- 13:25Speaker 3: is life and life beyond and abundant life today for
- 13:28Speaker 3: those who follow Christ himself. And so Elijah's faith was strong,
- 13:33Speaker 3: and he knew that God would always provide for him,
- 13:37Speaker 3: and would never leave him. Elijah's faith would be tested
- 13:41Speaker 3: in the years that would follow, but God had big
- 13:44Speaker 3: plans for Elijah that we're going to see in our
- 13:47Speaker 3: next passage. Dear God, thank you for the reminder today
- 13:51Speaker 3: that you are a God of might and miracles, that
- 13:55Speaker 3: you are the God of life, and we pray that
- 13:57Speaker 3: each one of us would trust you for our daily
- 14:00Speaker 3: provision and that we would live in the promise of
- 14:03Speaker 3: eternal life through Jesus our Lord.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Amen.
