- 0:00Um, this was a this has been a
- 0:02disastrous start. Um, all right. How are
- 0:03you guys Thanksgiving break?
- 0:07>> Okay. All right. Anybody? Okay. Okay. In
- 0:10keeping with that, did anybody eat like
- 0:11way more food than they should have?
- 0:14>> I got one hand, two hand, three hands,
- 0:15five hands. Okay. A few hands. Did
- 0:18anybody have to eat stuff that you did
- 0:21do not like? You know, a couple. Joel
- 0:23says, "Yeah, for sure." Yeah. I feel
- 0:26like, bro, I feel like I feel like
- 0:29Thanksgiving is the day where people
- 0:30bust out uh sweet potatoes and then try
- 0:33to make you like gaslight you into
- 0:35thinking sweet potatoes are good. Um
- 0:40>> I see the brainwashing is working. I see
- 0:43the brainwashing is working.
- 0:46>> Well, that explains some things. I'm
- 0:48just kidding, bro. No, sweet potatoes
- 0:51are trash. Okay, because No, no, no, no,
- 0:54no. Here's the thing. Here's the thing.
- 0:56Here's the thing. If you have to put
- 0:59marshmallows onto the food item in order
- 1:02to make it not garbage, then it's
- 1:04garbage. All right? Just saying. Just
- 1:07Just saying. I'm garbage.
- 1:10Watch yourself. Watch yourself. Okay.
- 1:15I've really opened.
- 1:17>> No, they're not. It's fine. I forgive
- 1:19you. I'll pray for you. All right. All
- 1:21right. So, here I'm going to tell you
- 1:23guys a story. And this didn't happen
- 1:25over Thanksgiving, but it's way cooler.
- 1:27All right? And it happened over fall
- 1:28break back in September. Um, so Ava and
- 1:31I, my wife, we grew up in California and
- 1:33we lived near the beach for our whole
- 1:35lives, right? Like maybe 15 minutes from
- 1:38the beach. Okay? And when you grow up
- 1:39near the beach, all right, you kind of
- 1:41forget how awesome the ocean is, right?
- 1:43Like some of you who came with us to
- 1:45move the high school camp, we got to go
- 1:47to the beach in North Carolina and it
- 1:48was so much fun. But like when you grow
- 1:50up near the beach, you're like, the
- 1:51beach, who cares, right? So, so I don't
- 1:54mean that the beach is awesome when I
- 1:56when I say awesome, right? I I mean
- 1:57awesome like looking out at the beach
- 2:00and being like, "Holy smokes, that is so
- 2:02much water. I cannot possibly wrap my
- 2:05head around like how big the ocean is,
- 2:08right? That's what I mean when I say
- 2:09like awesome." Okay, so anyway, during
- 2:12fall break, Ava and I, we went down to
- 2:13Florida to spend a few days in St.
- 2:15Petersburg, if you know where that is.
- 2:17Um, and while we were there, we decided
- 2:18that we were going to go parasailing.
- 2:20Okay. Um, if you don't know what
- 2:22parasailing is, it is where you go out
- 2:24in a boat and then they attach you to a
- 2:25parachute and so then suddenly you just
- 2:28get yanked up into the air because
- 2:30you're like attached to a kite. So they
- 2:32just like kite you around like 300 feet
- 2:35in the air, right? So we go parasailing
- 2:36and they attach us to the parachute and
- 2:38all of a sudden we just get like
- 2:39yeetated up into the sky. So we're 300
- 2:43ft in the air, right? Like above the
- 2:45tops of the hotels on the beach, right?
- 2:47And we're looking down and there's like
- 2:49colonies of stingrays in the water where
- 2:52there's like thousands of stingrays that
- 2:54are swimming out into the ocean, right?
- 2:56And and 300 feet up, you look out at the
- 2:58ocean and you can just see miles and
- 3:02miles and miles of empty ocean. All
- 3:04right? So, while I was working on this
- 3:07message, I looked it up and at 300 ft in
- 3:09the air, the horizon, like the point
- 3:12where you stop being able to see, is 22
- 3:15miles away. Okay? So when I say we're
- 3:17300 feet up and you see miles and miles
- 3:19of ocean, the the Gulf of Mexico or the
- 3:22Gulf of America, whatever you want to
- 3:23call it, is a thousand miles across. All
- 3:26right? So 300 feet, we saw 22 miles.
- 3:29That's like 2% of the Gulf of Mexico,
- 3:32right? But it gives us this like little
- 3:34tiny sense, just this faint glimmer of
- 3:37how impossibly vast and big the Gulf of
- 3:42Mexico or America or whatever you want
- 3:43to call it is. Okay? And so tonight,
- 3:46what I want to do with the time that I
- 3:48have here is I want to take us
- 3:49parasailing. All right.
- 3:52Yeah. Right. If you got 300 bucks, I got
- 3:54you, bro. But anyway, I want to take us
- 3:55parasailing. Okay. And just to give us
- 3:57like a 300 foot view of the Christmas
- 4:00story. Okay. So, tonight we're going to
- 4:02be jumping into a new series uh that
- 4:04we're going to be in for the next three
- 4:06weeks. Do we have it up there or no? Oh,
- 4:08great. Awesome. Uh so, tonight we're
- 4:10going to be jumping into a new series
- 4:11that we're going to be in for the next
- 4:12three weeks in the leadup to Christmas.
- 4:14and we're calling it the crown and the
- 4:16cradle. So, if you join us at church on
- 4:18Sunday mornings, if you've come uh
- 4:20really this this week, um Pastor Jay has
- 4:22started this whole new series in church
- 4:24uh for December called uh at least the
- 4:27the title before was the small things of
- 4:29Christmas. Now it's called Unexpected
- 4:31Wonders. Is that what it is?
- 4:32>> I look at Meredith like Meredith would
- 4:34know. Yeah, unexpected wonders. Right.
- 4:36But but basically the the message on
- 4:38Sunday mornings is about how Jesus was
- 4:40born as this ordinary little baby to a
- 4:43no-name little family in an irrelevant
- 4:46little town in a tiny little territory
- 4:48on the edge of the Roman Empire. And in
- 4:51the Christmas story, God reveals
- 4:53himself. We learned about this this
- 4:55morning. God reveals himself to ordinary
- 4:57people like Zechariah and Elizabeth,
- 5:00like Mary, like the shepherds in the
- 5:03fields, right? and he tells them about
- 5:05the extraordinary thing that God has
- 5:07begun to do by sending his son. So, I
- 5:10love that. I think that that is that is
- 5:11awesome both in like a cool and in like
- 5:13a big sense. Um, but so what I want to
- 5:16do on Sunday nights over the next three
- 5:18weeks is to fill out that picture by
- 5:21showing us a picture of the great big
- 5:24God who reveals himself through those
- 5:28small things of Christmas, through those
- 5:31unexpected wonders. Okay. So, each week
- 5:34for the next three, we're going to be uh
- 5:36covering a different passage of
- 5:38scripture. All right. We're going to be
- 5:39tonight a little bit of the Old
- 5:40Testament. Then we'll be in a little bit
- 5:42of the New Testament next week. And
- 5:43that's going to give us a little bit of
- 5:44a glimpse into how vast and majestic and
- 5:48glorious and all the like big awesome
- 5:50words you want to use for the son of God
- 5:53is. It'll be like we're going up in the
- 5:55parasail, right? and we're looking out
- 5:57over the horizon and we're getting just
- 5:59a glimpse of the ocean of God's glory,
- 6:02how it just keeps going and going and
- 6:05going. And then each week we'll come
- 6:08back and we'll take a look at the
- 6:09Christmas story, right? And we'll read
- 6:10it remembering that this great and
- 6:13glorious God is the one who comes to
- 6:15defeat sin and death and restore us to
- 6:18the father by being born in the manger
- 6:21to the little family in the little town
- 6:23in the little corner of the Roman
- 6:25Empire. that God comes as a defenseless
- 6:28baby. Okay, so if you've got a Bible,
- 6:30crack it open. If you need one, we got
- 6:32ESVs and NLTs that are there in the
- 6:34back. Um, but open up your Bibles to
- 6:35Daniel chapter 7. All right, Daniel is
- 6:38in the Old Testament. It's about
- 6:39twothirds of the way through the Bible.
- 6:41Um, and it's part of a a collection of
- 6:44books called the Major Prophets. They're
- 6:46called major because they tend to be
- 6:47kind of long and they're called prophets
- 6:49because in each of these books, we see
- 6:51God using a human messenger to speak
- 6:53directly to God's people. And so, just
- 6:56to give you the setup for Daniel 7, um
- 6:59Daniel's ministry takes place late in
- 7:01the history of the people of Israel.
- 7:03Okay? God had chosen Israel to be his
- 7:06special chosen people. And the people of
- 7:08Israel then go chasing after false gods
- 7:12and of the neighboring nations. And God
- 7:14warns them that he's going to punish
- 7:15them if they don't turn back. And then
- 7:17finally, he allows them to be conquered
- 7:19by this enemy nation called Babylon. And
- 7:22Daniel the prophet, he gets taken to
- 7:25work in the government of the Babylonian
- 7:27Empire. So in Daniel chapter 7, while
- 7:30Daniel is working in the Babylonian
- 7:32government, he gets a vision from God.
- 7:34And in the vision, Daniel sees these
- 7:37four terrible, monstrous beasts coming
- 7:40up out of the ocean. And each of these
- 7:42beasts, we won't read this part, but
- 7:43each of these beasts represents a
- 7:45different empire that will rule over the
- 7:48Jewish people for a period of time.
- 7:49Okay? So, the first beast, uh, that's
- 7:51early in Daniel 7. The first beast
- 7:53represents Babylon. And then the next
- 7:55three beasts represent these later
- 7:57empires that are still in the future at
- 7:59the time that Daniel's having this
- 8:00vision. And we won't go into the details
- 8:03of of all of those empires tonight, but
- 8:05what matters for us to know is that each
- 8:07of those empires is a world superpower.
- 8:11at one point in history. Okay, it would
- 8:12be kind of like today if there was a
- 8:14modern-day prophet named Daniel who
- 8:16stepped up and he had a vision with
- 8:18these four beasts coming out of the
- 8:19ocean and those four beasts represented
- 8:21like the British Empire, the Soviet
- 8:24Union, the United States, and then like
- 8:26China or something, right? It would be
- 8:28we're talking big powerful countries at
- 8:30different points in time. And so in
- 8:32verse 9, the scene shifts in Daniel's
- 8:36vision and it's going to give us a sneak
- 8:37peek of what's going on in heaven while
- 8:40these beasts, while these world
- 8:42superpower empires are doing their thing
- 8:44on earth. Okay, so we'll read Daniel 7
- 8:47vers starting in verse 9. It says, "I
- 8:49watched I being Daniel says, I watched
- 8:52as thrones were put in place and the
- 8:55ancient one sat down to judge. His
- 8:57clothing was as white as snow, his hair
- 9:00like purest wool. He sat on a fiery
- 9:03throne with wheels of blazing fire and a
- 9:06river of fire was pouring out flowing
- 9:09from his presence. Millions of angels
- 9:12ministered to him. Many millions stood
- 9:15to attend him. Then the court began its
- 9:17session and the books were opened. So
- 9:20the scene changes from the ocean and the
- 9:23beasts, right? The scene changes and
- 9:24Daniel catches a glimpse of a courtroom
- 9:27scene that's happening in heaven. And he
- 9:30says that he sees the ancient one
- 9:32sitting in heaven, which is who?
- 9:35>> God, right? It's God sitting in heaven.
- 9:37Okay? So, he sees God who's sitting on
- 9:39this huge fiery throne in heaven. And
- 9:42and it's important for us not to take
- 9:44every little detail of Daniel's vision
- 9:46completely literally, right? Like this
- 9:47is a vision, right? So, there's there's
- 9:49symbolism in this in this vision. Plus,
- 9:52this is a dude who lived like 25 2600
- 9:56years ago and he's describing something
- 9:57that if you saw would literally like
- 9:59melt your face, right? So, so symbols.
- 10:02But the important thing for us to see,
- 10:04okay, is that even though there are
- 10:06these evil empires that are ruling on
- 10:09the earth at the time that Daniel is
- 10:11alive, and even though it looks like the
- 10:13people of God have been defeated and
- 10:16oppressed by these enemy nations, when
- 10:19Daniel looks up to heaven, who does he
- 10:21see sitting on the throne?
- 10:25God.
- 10:26It's God. It's his God, right? It's the
- 10:30God of the Israelites. It's not the God
- 10:32of Babylon sitting on the throne. It's
- 10:34not the God of the Greeks who will come
- 10:36later. It's not the God of the Romans
- 10:38who will come later. It's God, our God.
- 10:42And there's a little more that we can
- 10:44kind of squeeze out of the symbolism of
- 10:45the vision here, right? God's God's
- 10:47white clothing represents his purity and
- 10:50his holiness. His white hair represents
- 10:52how he is eternal, how he's infinitely
- 10:55wise. And all that fire symbolism in the
- 10:58throne and the river of fire coming out
- 11:00from his throne, right? that represents
- 11:01his glory and his power. The river of
- 11:04fire is the the power of God's judgment
- 11:06against these evil world empires. And
- 11:10the thing for us to see in this passage
- 11:12is that no matter who is ruling on the
- 11:15earth, God is on the throne. Now listen,
- 11:20I don't know what is going to happen in
- 11:22the future. If I did, I would be a lot
- 11:24richer. Um I don't know what's going to
- 11:26happen in the future. I don't know if
- 11:28like in 50 years America is going to
- 11:30have like fewer and fewer Christians or
- 11:32whatever. I I don't know any of those
- 11:34things. But even if any of those things
- 11:37happens, God is on the throne. Okay? If
- 11:40if tomorrow an atheist country like
- 11:43China or whatever comes along and
- 11:45becomes the next world empire, even if
- 11:47the United States gets invaded and
- 11:48Christianity gets outlawed, God is on
- 11:52the throne. So let's keep reading. This
- 11:55is the part I want to get to in in verse
- 11:5713. It says, 'As my vision continued
- 12:01that night, I saw someone like a son of
- 12:03man coming with the clouds of heaven. He
- 12:07approached the ancient one and was led
- 12:09into his presence. He was given
- 12:11authority, honor, and sovereignty over
- 12:14all the nations of the world so that
- 12:16people of every race and nation and
- 12:18language would obey him. His rule is
- 12:21eternal. It will never end. His kingdom
- 12:24will never be destroyed.
- 12:28I love these verses so much. This is
- 12:30like one of the key passages of the Old
- 12:33Testament that helps us to understand
- 12:34the New Testament. Okay, so so Daniel's
- 12:36having this vision, right? The Daniel's
- 12:38vision of the courtroom scene in heaven
- 12:39continues and a new character appears in
- 12:42the vision. Okay, it's the son of man.
- 12:44And and son of man is a special phrase
- 12:47in the Bible. Okay, in the Old
- 12:48Testament, it usually just refers to
- 12:50people generally, right? in in Ezekiel,
- 12:53which is another one of the major
- 12:54prophets, that's the main way that God
- 12:56talks to this guy Ezekiel. He just calls
- 12:58him son of man, blah blah blah blah
- 13:00blah. Okay, in the New Testament, that
- 13:03phrase is going to take on new meaning.
- 13:05And the reason why it does is because of
- 13:07this scene in Daniel 7. Okay, so let me
- 13:10talk about why. So this new character
- 13:12shows up in Daniel's vision. And Daniel
- 13:14says that it looks like a son of man.
- 13:17And what he's saying is it looks like
- 13:19he's just a regular dude. But there is
- 13:22something weird about this guy because
- 13:24he looks like a regular dude, but he
- 13:27doesn't act like a regular dude. And he
- 13:29doesn't get treated like a regular dude.
- 13:32How many times can I say regular dude
- 13:34tonight?
- 13:35The passage says that he rolls up to the
- 13:37courtroom scene. It says he rolls up to
- 13:39the courtroom scene with the clouds of
- 13:41heaven. And in the Old Testament, that
- 13:43is an idea or there's an idea of someone
- 13:45coming with the clouds that that
- 13:47represents God's power and judgment. In
- 13:50Psalm 104, the psalmist writes that God
- 13:53makes the clouds his chariot. In Isaiah
- 13:5619, Isaiah says that God is coming to
- 13:58judge the evil nation Egypt, and he's
- 14:01coming riding on a swift cloud. In both
- 14:04of those verses, who it who is it who
- 14:08rolls up with the clouds, right? In
- 14:09Psalm 104, it's God who rolls up with
- 14:12the clouds. Right? In Isaiah 19, it's
- 14:14God who rolls up with the clouds. In the
- 14:16Old Testament, only God comes with the
- 14:19clouds of heaven. Only God has the the
- 14:23power and the authority to to judge,
- 14:26right? But in the passage, somehow this
- 14:29son of man, this regular dude, he does
- 14:32that same thing. But it gets weirder.
- 14:35Okay? So the son of man, he comes into
- 14:37the presence of God and the vision says
- 14:39that he's given authority and honor and
- 14:42sovereignty over all the nations of the
- 14:44world. So wait, wait, wait. Okay, Daniel
- 14:46sees like the beasts and the the global
- 14:49superpowers, right? But really, it's God
- 14:51who's on the throne and then God gives
- 14:53this son of man guy the authority and
- 14:57power over all the nations of the world.
- 15:00That's more power than Babylon ever had.
- 15:02That's more power than Rome ever had.
- 15:04That's more power than the United States
- 15:06has ever had or will ever have. Daniel
- 15:09says that people of every race and
- 15:11nation and language will obey this son
- 15:14of man person. Right? And that word that
- 15:17that the the NLT translates as obey that
- 15:19we have on the screen in the Old
- 15:21Testament, that word is overwhelmingly
- 15:23used to talk about worship and service
- 15:26of God.
- 15:27It says that people of every race and
- 15:30nation and language will bow down and
- 15:34serve this son of man. And that's
- 15:37something that never happened in the
- 15:39entire history of Israel. Right? Who who
- 15:42were the question for you guys. Who were
- 15:44the kings of Israel the kings over?
- 15:48Who were the kings of Israel the kings
- 15:50over?
- 15:51>> Israel. Yeah. Exactly. Who bowed down to
- 15:54the kings of Israel?
- 15:55>> Israel.
- 15:56>> Israel. Exactly right. There is only one
- 16:00Israel. So, I'm hitting with you hitting
- 16:01you guys with trick questions tonight.
- 16:02All right. There is only one Israelite
- 16:05in history to whom people of every race
- 16:09and nation and language bowed down and
- 16:13served who bowed down to this guy in the
- 16:16way they bowed down to God. There is
- 16:18only one Israelite in history who
- 16:22claimed to have a kingdom that will
- 16:24never end. a kingdom that will never be
- 16:28destroyed.
- 16:30Okay, I I said a couple minutes ago that
- 16:31in the Old Testament that phrase son of
- 16:33man is just like a general term for
- 16:35human being, right? But after Daniel's
- 16:37vision, there is this extra weight that
- 16:40gets attached to the idea of the son of
- 16:42man, right? That the son of man, who
- 16:44Daniel predicts looks like a regular
- 16:46dude, but he's doing things only God
- 16:48does. He's given authority and power
- 16:50that only God has. that he receives
- 16:53worship of the nations that only God
- 16:55deserves, right? And the question that
- 16:58Daniel 7 is kind of raising is who is
- 17:01this guy? Who is this king?
- 17:06But then along comes Jesus. Okay, 600
- 17:09years after this vision from Daniel gets
- 17:12recorded, along comes Jesus. And right
- 17:15from the beginning of his ministry,
- 17:17Jesus is calling himself the son of man.
- 17:20It's one of Jesus's favorite ways to
- 17:22refer to himself during his ministry.
- 17:24It's in all four of the gospels and it
- 17:26confuses his followers, right? And it
- 17:28especially confuses his enemies because
- 17:30sometimes when Jesus says son of man, it
- 17:33sounds like he's talking about himself
- 17:35just as a regular dude. Okay? Right? In
- 17:37in Matthew 8, Jesus says foxes have dens
- 17:40to live in and birds have nests, but the
- 17:42son of man has no place even to lay his
- 17:45head. Right? He's just a regular dude, a
- 17:48homeless regular dude. Okay. But
- 17:51sometimes Jesus calls himself the son of
- 17:54man. And we can tell that he means
- 17:57something bigger than that. In John 1,
- 18:00he says to his disciples, "You will all
- 18:03see heaven open and the angels of God
- 18:06going up and down on the son of man." In
- 18:10John 3, he says that the son of man has
- 18:13come down from heaven. In John 5, he
- 18:16says that he has been given the
- 18:17authority to judge the world. In John 6,
- 18:20he says that he has the power to give
- 18:23eternal life. Right? I could keep going.
- 18:25Okay. In Mark 2, Jesus says that the son
- 18:27of man has the authority to forgive
- 18:29sins. Also in Mark 2, Jesus says that
- 18:31the son of man is the lord over the
- 18:34Jewish Sabbath. In Mark 8, he says that
- 18:36the son of man commands armies of
- 18:39angels. Right? These are things that all
- 18:43the Jews understood that only God can
- 18:46do. But Jesus
- 18:50calling himself the son of man says, "I
- 18:53have the authority and the power to do
- 18:56all of those things." Okay, here's a
- 18:58cool one. All right, in Mark 13, Jesus
- 19:02is speaking to his disciples about the
- 19:04end of the world. It's a cool passage. I
- 19:05I recommend reading it. And he tells
- 19:07them about wars and earthquakes and
- 19:10famines and persecutions that God's
- 19:12people will experience. And after all of
- 19:14those things, he says in verse 26 of
- 19:16Mark 13, he says, "Then everyone will
- 19:19see the Son of Man coming on the clouds
- 19:24with great power and glory. And he will
- 19:27send out his nations to gather his
- 19:30chosen ones from all over the world,
- 19:32from the farthest ends of the earth and
- 19:35heaven." Keep that on the screen,
- 19:37Samuel. Read that again. That they'll
- 19:40see the son of man coming on the clouds.
- 19:44Y'all, that is Jesus making a direct
- 19:46reference to Daniel 7. Okay, that is him
- 19:49like directly quoting this vision in
- 19:51Daniel 7. Okay, when Jesus says this,
- 19:53there is no doubt in his disciples minds
- 19:56what he is saying that he is this this
- 19:59God man, right? This guy who comes to
- 20:02rule with the authority of God, with the
- 20:04judgment of God, who rules the eternal
- 20:06kingdom of God that covers the whole
- 20:08world, that is Jesus Christ.
- 20:12Now, one more Son of Man reference and
- 20:15then we'll go to the Christmas story,
- 20:16okay? Because I know you're like, "Isn't
- 20:17this a Christmas series? Like, what
- 20:18what's going on?" Okay, one more Son of
- 20:20Man reference. So, in the next chapter
- 20:22of Mark, Mark chapter 14, Jesus is
- 20:25arrested and he's put on trial before
- 20:28the Jewish high council. And Mark
- 20:30records that there's all these false
- 20:33witnesses who come to testify against
- 20:35Jesus, but they're just like lying about
- 20:37what Jesus has said. And so they can't
- 20:38get their testimony against him to
- 20:40stick. And and the way I read it, okay,
- 20:42reading between the lines here, but the
- 20:44way I read it, I feel like the high
- 20:45priest is getting frustrated in the
- 20:46scene, right? That that they can't get
- 20:48any good evidence against Jesus, right?
- 20:50So he gets frustrated. The high priest
- 20:51just asks Jesus straight up. He says,
- 20:53"Are you the Messiah, the Son of God?"
- 20:56And in verse 62, Jesus says,"I
- 20:59am, and you will see the Son of Man
- 21:04seated in the place of power at God's
- 21:06right hand and coming on the clouds of
- 21:10heaven."
- 21:12And it says right after that, it says
- 21:14that the high priest tears his clothing
- 21:17and the whole council condemns Jesus to
- 21:20death because of what he's just said.
- 21:23And if we don't know Daniel 7, you you
- 21:25just read that and you're like, "That
- 21:27was a really weird reaction to to what
- 21:30Jesus has just said, right?" But they
- 21:32know Daniel 7, right? They know what
- 21:34Jesus is saying. They know the Daniel 7
- 21:37vision. Jesus is saying to these people,
- 21:40"I am the God man of Daniel 7." And you
- 21:44all may think that you're judging me,
- 21:46but just like Daniel saw me judge the
- 21:49Babylonians and the Persians and the
- 21:51Greeks, I'm going to come and I'm going
- 21:53to judge you.
- 21:56So, what does any of that have to do
- 21:58with the Christmas story? Okay. Now, I I
- 22:01think that for most of us, whether you
- 22:03grew up in church or not, and I know
- 22:04most of you did, um the Christmas story
- 22:06can get so familiar that we lose sight
- 22:09of how shocking, how radical the heart
- 22:12of the Christmas story is. Okay? The
- 22:14reason why there are so many Jews and
- 22:17Muslims who won't accept the Christian
- 22:19gospel is because they find it offensive
- 22:22that we claim that God would lower
- 22:24himself to the level of a human. Okay?
- 22:28But you guys, that is exactly what our
- 22:31God did. The king of the universe, the
- 22:34God who created heaven and earth. He saw
- 22:38you, Sophia. He saw you, Luke. He saw
- 22:42you, Joel. He saw you in your sin and
- 22:46shame and brokenness. He loved you and
- 22:50wanted to restore you to himself. And
- 22:52the way that he did it was for God to
- 22:55empty himself and take on a truly human
- 22:58mind and body to be born in the normal
- 23:01way that babies are born, right? With
- 23:03all the blood and pain and screaming and
- 23:06bodily fluids that go on with being
- 23:08born, right?
- 23:10So for these three weeks as we roll into
- 23:13Christmas, I'm going to end the night
- 23:14each time by reading the Christmas
- 23:16story. Okay? But as I read the story, I
- 23:19don't want us to lose sight of
- 23:21everything that I've just talked about
- 23:22for the last 20 minutes. Okay? Remember
- 23:25who our God is. Remember why he lowered
- 23:29himself by becoming a human being. Okay?
- 23:32So, I'm going to close out with Luke
- 23:33chapter 2 and then I'm going to pray for
- 23:35us. So, the worship team, you guys can
- 23:36come up.
- 23:38Starting in verse two of chapter 2 of
- 23:40Luke.
- 23:42At that time, the Roman Emperor Augustus
- 23:45decreed that a census should be taken
- 23:47throughout the Roman Empire. This was
- 23:50the first census taken when Quirinius
- 23:52was governor of Syria. All returned to
- 23:54their own ancestral towns to register
- 23:57for the census. And because Joseph was a
- 23:59descendant of King David, he had to go
- 24:01to Bethlehem in Judea, David's ancient
- 24:04home. He traveled there from the village
- 24:06of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him
- 24:09Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was
- 24:11now expecting a child. And while they
- 24:14were there, the time came for her baby
- 24:16to be born. She gave birth to her
- 24:18firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in
- 24:20strips of cloth and laid him in a manger
- 24:23because there was no lodging available
- 24:25for them. That night, there were
- 24:27shepherds staying in the fields nearby,
- 24:29guarding their flocks of sheep.
- 24:31Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared
- 24:34among them, and the radiance of the
- 24:36Lord's glory surrounded them. They were
- 24:39terrified, but the angel reassured them.
- 24:42"Don't be afraid," he said. "I bring you
- 24:45good news that will bring great joy to
- 24:48all the people. The Savior, yes, the
- 24:51Messiah, the Lord, has been born today
- 24:54in Bethlehem, the city of David. And you
- 24:57will recognize him by this sign. you
- 24:59will find a baby wrapped snugly in
- 25:01strips of cloth lying in a manger.
- 25:05Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast
- 25:08host of others, the armies of heaven,
- 25:11praising God and saying, "Glory to God
- 25:14in highest heaven and peace on earth to
- 25:17those with whom God is pleased." Let's
- 25:20pray.
