- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: We have a great show here today.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: Alan Poupark of Miami Dolphins on sports
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, thanks to Alan for coming on.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: Always enjoy when we get to talk to some of the beat guys and get their perspective, because we talk every week a song, but we don't always get to get eyes directly on the player.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: So it's neat to be able to talk to somebody who has been able to be there at the facility and see and things that are going on.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_02]: And I have to say, for my end, it does my heart good to do a podcast with somebody supporting the salt and pepper beer like I am.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_02]: So, I'm absolutely, I'm absolutely.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's where you go.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's when it's for sure.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: So, I mean, Alan, the Miami Dolphins, right?
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: From covering them in 2023, just that big year that explosion of the Miami Dolphins to the tankiers and Brian Flores, I mean, you've covered the Dolphins for, I think, all the way back to at least,
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: Don Shula.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_02]: Don Shula.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_02]: Don Shula.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_02]: Dan Moreno.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_02]: First year full-time coverage was 1989.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_02]: They went eight and eight in the very first game I covered for Dolphin Digest at the time Was against the Buffalo Bills at home.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_02]: This was at a time when the reporters were allowed to get onto the field in the final six minutes Which they've stopped doing and this was a game for those old enough to remember They were up 24 20 in the final seconds.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_02]: Last play of the game and the bills ran a quarterback draw with Jim Kelly
- 2:55[SPEAKER_02]: work the perfection and fortunately from the dolphin standpoint in both of the left with a 27 24 and maybe that should have told me something it's going to be a whole lot of frustration covering this team.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think my dad might remember that game.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: That was his first year he was here in America and also probably one of the like that's 19 nine dolphin season was probably the very first.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: season he saw Dan Moreno learn about football as well my very first year you know watching the dolphin and really getting into gear was that Chris Chambers 2004 game where he just exploded for you know 230 hours.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: That was my very first memories of the dolphins and coach what about you man.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, when Alan's first game there, I was five years old, but I'm sure the game was on the table.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: No, I didn't not say that.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm talking with myself.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: I was five years old, but both my parents grew up in Miami, so I'm sure the game was on.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure there were some superlatives thrown around when that happened.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: So, I mean,
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: Alan, so many coaches, right?
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: You talk about McDaniel, Flora's, one is that the Joel Philbeneers, where does Jeff Haffley rank in terms of first impressions after, you know, mandatory mini-camp press conference and stuff like that?
- 4:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you know what?
- 4:22[SPEAKER_02]: Can I have the right to separate them into two categories as former NFL Head Coach and first time head coaches because that's kind of different.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_02]: Jim, when Jimy Johnson was hired,
- 4:32[SPEAKER_02]: This is a big time where you got here.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, this is going to be great.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_02]: So if I go by a first time hit coaches in terms of how impressive he is, he's right up there.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_02]: If not at the top, right near the Joe Philbin with all the respect, it wasn't somebody who was just anybody up, Cam Cameron was for lack of a better term.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_02]: I think my daughter uses that term a little bit goofy.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_02]: Tony Sparano, the thing with him is, you could tell he was hard on his off-football, grunt grunt, grunt, grunt, snarle, except that you couldn't escape the idea that Bill Parsell was the one calling all the shots.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: Up to and almost including, I maintain, if you look at what the Dolphins did in 2008, going from 1 in 15 to 11 in 5 when in the FCE, if that doesn't scream, coach of the year, I don't know what does, and I don't even went in, and I think one of the reasons he didn't
- 5:26[SPEAKER_02]: I would surmise that I don't think it's ever come up, but that some folks felt Bill Parselle was calling along the shelf.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_02]: So, from that standpoint.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_02]: And then Mike McDaniel was centric.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_02]: Brian Flores is another one who I thought was very, very impressive earlier because of the way he talks.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_02]: Didn't know he had quite an issue relating with people at the time that we came to find out.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_02]: But that sort of, and then Adam Gace was impressive when he started,
- 5:57[SPEAKER_02]: not to the degree of Jeff Hathley.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_02]: Jeff Hathley, Jeff Hathley, for what has been asked to do so far, hasn't coached the game so we can't say he's going to be a great coach, but in terms of like setting the stage for training camp and the weak communicates with the media presents his idea with conviction and all that, some of the tweaks and practice we've seen, very, very impressive.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_01]: Is there a lot of middle ground there with Jeff Hathley, like our last two coaches before him, McDaniel, and Brian Flores were like polar opposites, like four as was your, you know, hard nose, no nonsense, like you said trouble with relationships, and Mike McDaniel was completely opposite, very good relationally, but maybe not as much as a of a disciplinary.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: And so does Hathley kind of fit in the middle there of kind of the best of both worlds?
- 6:47[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's where it looks like to early to tell, but yes, absolutely what it looks like.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_02]: And this is where he looks again.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_02]: I don't want it to carry the way, but my first impression, and also that same thing with John Eric Sullivan, too early, we don't know if the graphics are gonna pan out.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_02]: The free agents, it doesn't matter because they're basically
- 7:08[SPEAKER_02]: This season was about establishing a foundation with Jeff Hathley, seeing if the movie will this can be the quarterback and everything else is basically putting a team on the field if we're going to be honest about it because it's not I'm sorry, but it's not the Joshua Che or the David or Jabo is who we're going to make the dolphins contenders.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I say this as respectfully as I can.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_02]: But he's so far very, very impressive in Jeff Hathley as well.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_02]: And he looks like he's the perfect balance of
- 7:37[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to be no sound to relate to players, but there's no question he's the boss and don't try to pull some stuff because that's not going to fly.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Coach, one thing that you necessary look for in these very early off season practices is to see if the players really can take the coaching of the coaching staff, the coaches can take that command of the locker room.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, Alan, after 40 years of watching these dolphins coaches, right?
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: You know, what did you see that told you that Jeff Hathley actually has the locker room?
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be it.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's still early on.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: They haven't played a game, but are you able to tell?
- 8:21[SPEAKER_02]: not not really going to be honest about it and here's the other part of the equation that can't be ignored is the high maintenance slash diva slash me first players are kind of all gone.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like if you look at your high profile players, even one player who could be problematic right now Jordan Brooks, because he wants to contract extension, they haven't given it to him yet.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: I really need her to be honest.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's not his talk.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_02]: Can you imagine if this was going on with Jalen Ramsey right now?
- 8:50[SPEAKER_02]: I'm probably wouldn't look the same.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_02]: And then you look another guy, Austin Jackson there, some take a pick up.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_02]: And that's an awesome demo, awesome, the good guy is demo is not going to be like to make a fuss about it.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_02]: The worst thing that maybe he didn't, we don't even know for sure if that was the case that he didn't appear in the armor or social media photo.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_02]: We could have been.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_02]: I know if it's me, you're like, you want me to put a photo of the guy who got a contract extension after you asked me to take a pick up?
- 9:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, sorry.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't care how good a guy he is.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_02]: That's a bridge too far for me.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_02]: So he's got a, so from from that respect, he's got a lot less problematic locker room to deal with.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: Not that huge of a black mark for Austin Jackson, that least in in your book.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_02]: No.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_02]: No.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't know if I don't know the circumstance, I don't if he was the
- 9:45[SPEAKER_02]: who set it up, that the other three guys would be there.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_02]: But like I said, if he was asking, he said nothing, nothing, so I'm good, I would have zero or so with that.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I kind of, whether maybe he was still dealing with some sort of rehab assignment, and he was off doing that when that whole thing happened, but now you're saying that, that kind of makes sense.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I can see that.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: Like if you,
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if you were asked to go pay cut and then you're asked to come, you know, being the social media thing for the guy that just got a pretty big raise, I get that.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_02]: Just like if they dashed Javan Hall and it was looking for a contract in 2024, you want to come and celebrate two as a big extension when he goes show me the money.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_02]: It was rolling through Javan Hall's mind when two was doing that.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: So talking about many camps, OTAs, that type of thing, Kevin Coleman is a player that kind of seems like a lot of people are talking about and you've seen a lot of these things and for me, I don't feel like it's a surprise that Kevin Coleman is showing out there like that's the type of environment kind of like to a right this these are the type of practices these type of guys are going to show out and Jeff Haffley is made at a point to say this is this is not real football, but you saw him
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: first hand, right?
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: And you've seen guys do it all throughout the years.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: The stuff that you saw with Coleman, do you think that's the kind of stuff that's going to translate when the pads do come on or is this more so just, you know, you're not allowed to, you're barely allowed to touch each other, so he's playing in more space than what he's going to have.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_02]: that's a question and actually you probably would know the answer better than that in terms of what's his level of fearlessness going over the middle because he made a lot of his catches in the sprint practices that we watched over the middle where he doesn't have to worry about getting you know, run up and that's not going to happen and I remember there were a couple of of wide receivers for something like Ryan Manning who was like a six-hrong stand for back in the day like he was lighting it up early on and then it stopped.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_02]: And there are others as well, but he's the one for some reason who comes to mind.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_02]: So that would be the question.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_02]: But they needed for it to happen because you didn't see Chris Bell at all in the spring and who knows what is status going to be for the start of training camp item.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_02]: Imagine he's going to start on pup, but how long is he going to be on pup?
- 12:05[SPEAKER_02]: And then Caleb Douglas wound up ending the OTAs on the sideline work with trainers after a sustained some sort of injury.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they need for one of those, one of those draft picks and why do you see it to pop out, and it doesn't really matter who it is now that they've been drafted.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_01]: Today, that's really stand out like the toll birch stand out, the T2 Outwell stand out.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: No, hey, the one-year contract goes on.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: Sounds a bit underwhelming from the wider receiver.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it kind of tells you just the confidence level of what the offense could potentially look like, too, because, I mean, you wrote about that, there was zero question who the star in quarterback was, right?
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it's it's Malik Willis through and through.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like, there's zero question, but there are also struggles from Malik Willis, too.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: you know, get the offense into the red zone, he couldn't drive up the field.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: He had a couple of periods very early on in camp where he didn't look that good from, you know, other is reporting.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: So what is the definitive factor for Malik Willis that made you say zero question?
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: He's the starter, even though his practice is, at least early on, from what we hear, they don't look good.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but first of all, I'm not sure that I grew with my colleagues with all due respect.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_02]: He had one practice where he was really off.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_02]: The other ones, for example, if it's a late, if it's a late game drill 11 on 11, and receiver doesn't run the correct route and winds up being a pick, it drives over.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_02]: Is that the Malik Willis failed?
- 13:48[SPEAKER_02]: And part of it is, again, it's a quarterback getting accustomed to new receivers.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_02]: And there's like a chemistry issue in knowing or having a good day to where your receiver is going to be when he's going to be there, that takes some time.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't, I'm not buying this notion that I'm going to leak with a struggle in the offseason.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_02]: Sorry, I'm not on board with that.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, would you, that, no, just guys, would you also say, like, during OTAs, many camps, even in a training camp, that you are, that Malik Willis is kind of hamstrung in terms of his superpowers, like, right, like, we don't, on the way to be expecting to go out there and be pinpoint accurate the way that two of was in practices, but, you know, you're talking about the end of game.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: type situations there when you get into an actual game, a defect is really going to have to respect his ability to run the ball, get out of the pocket and that could potentially open up, a massive completion down field, something like that.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_01]: So did you see him escaping the pocket a lot of new tears?
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: Or it seemed like they're really focusing on run the offense the way it's designed for now and then take the training wheels off later.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_02]: There were a couple of plays, and in fact, like what became like the biggest past play of the spring or one of the biggest ones was a or remember what drilling was, but there was pressure.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_02]: He had to move up in the pocket, side swipe somebody, and then through completed past events, similar over the metal, and the safety adding might have been Zain Anderson got caught out of position in 40 yards.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_02]: It's a touchdown.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_02]: And to answer some questions,
- 15:23[SPEAKER_02]: The two reasons is sealing and again the worst part I'm looking for.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_02]: The endorsement that the dolphins made when Jeff Hathley and John Erick Sullivan, when I'm got Malay Kuala's guaranteed in 45 million over the next two years, that's your stamp.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_02]: This is our guide.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: We are going to give him the shot to get the franchise quarterback.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_02]: And when yours,
- 15:46[SPEAKER_02]: could make your argument maybe a more consistent quarterback, but he's going to be a consistent BB minus quarterback, whereas Malik Wallace, the range of outcomes is much greater, but the ceiling also is a lot higher.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_02]: I don't see when yours ever having the ability to develop into a high end and if I'll start in quarterback, whereas that possibility certainly is there with Malik Wallace and the dolphins are going to have.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_02]: Make damn sure that they see if it's there.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: Coach, I think you're going to like this question is what I'm about to ask, Alan.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: But with Malik Will is getting the stamp of approval, right, he's your starting quarterback.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: Look, he needs to have a good offensive line to at least have a chance, a shot, doing well up against opposing defenses in the AFC East, right?
- 16:39[SPEAKER_00]: possibly carted off, he was carted off during many camp.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, Austin Jackson, not practicing.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_00]: We're seeing and hearing some reports of Jonah being moved back to his natural position in our right card.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: Aaron Brewer, getting the extension, you have Patrick Paul and King Proctor Manning to left side.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: You've seen offence of line disasters in Miami for many, many years.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_02]: Coach, we told, no, never, sorry.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: Is there a worry this year about what the Dolphins offensive line death looks like heading into training camp?
- 17:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_02]: Starting five.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_02]: I like it.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_02]: I would make the argument also.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_02]: I made this point earlier on social media and writing and I got a lot of push back on it.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not back in a way for my stance and y'all can tell me I'm crazy.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_02]: You won't be the first.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_02]: You won't be the last.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_02]: Malik Willis does not have, does not have to have a great supporting cast around him for half the install of him to be able to determine whether he's a franchise quarterback or not.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_02]: And generally speaking, what separates your average quarterback from your star quarterback is the ability to create when there's nothing there when the folks around you are not doing their job initially.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_02]: And this is where this is to work, this is where to a fail.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_02]: When things are on
- 18:07[SPEAKER_02]: The problem is is, in the NFL, more often than not, something's going to bring that at some point, and you've got to make something happen on your own.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_02]: That's where Malik Willis is.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_02]: ability lies.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a very valid point because if you go back to his tape at Liberty and very previous years, he was able to make chicken salad at a chicken shit.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, excuse my language.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he was moving out of the pocket, trying to run, he was trying to hit the tight ends over the seams, scramming away from edge defenders that really clogged up big gaps where the guards aren't really able to
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: And Kocha, I'm going to give you this.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: Well, John Narek Sullivan and Jeff Hathley have seen it in Green Bay, right?
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: But what happens if without that starting cast that, you know, Malik will this needs to be super duper successful?
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: What if he reverts back to his Tennessee playing days?
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: Then he's not the guy, like I agree with Alan there, like you don't have to have
- 19:15[SPEAKER_01]: above average supporting cast to see that he is the guy like he needs to be able to even if he has a below average cast around him, he needs to be able to raise the play of those guys.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_01]: You got to kind of temper your expectations a little bit there.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_01]: If you have a bottom five group of skill players and you can't expect Malik will us to put on a top five type performance, right?
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: But if you give him a bottom ten type
- 19:39[SPEAKER_01]: cast and he puts up top 15 numbers, right?
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's enough to say that he's doing the right stuff that he's moving in the right direction.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, we saw it, we've seen it over the years with all of the, the great quarterback, right?
- 19:50[SPEAKER_01]: The Tom Brady is the patch of my homes.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's some point, those teams are going to get ravished by injuries, right?
- 19:57[SPEAKER_01]: The, the skill positions, they're going to end up with wide receiver rooms that are decimated by injuries.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_01]: And those quarterback still got to be able to get it done.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, in the same vein there, right, if Malik will, doesn't have those weapons and he completely flops, then, you know, I think you kind of know that, maybe you don't know that he's not the guy, right, but it's enough to, to be concerned about making the long-term commitment to him, whereas if you give him
- 20:23[SPEAKER_01]: You don't you don't give him the weapons and he's still able to go out there.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_01]: He's still able to floor.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_01]: She's able to keep you in games, make you competitive at the end.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: Then that's a pretty good vote of confidence that he's going to be able to do that in the future.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I want to kind of stay on the quarterbacks there, Alan.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: One of the, you know, things of the new cycle this week is the Brendan Source B thing, right?
- 20:45[SPEAKER_01]: And entering the supplemental draft, I don't, I don't think that Miami's going to put it to pick high enough that they'll get him compared to what some of the other teams have, but you've been in Miami for a lot of years, right?
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: When you have heard about the issues that Source B has had with the gambling,
- 21:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I was also thinking about the fact like, even if Swordsbeek comes to Miami, right, he's probably, he's not going to start over Malik Willis in 2026.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_01]: So he's going to be in a situation where he's, he's a backup quarterback.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_01]: He's not preparing to be a starter, which probably gives you a little bit of extra time, right?
- 21:19[SPEAKER_01]: So would you have concern with bringing somebody like Swordsbeek into the Miami market as a backup and you know, have concerns about him falling into previous
- 21:33[SPEAKER_02]: You can gamble anywhere, though, that's it.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_02]: And I haven't heard that there are substance abuse issues, which would be maybe the bigger concern in Miami.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_02]: One phone appointment, well, let's say, if I may, is, oh, a caution, anybody and everybody, do not get hung up on numbers.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_02]: Stats are not nearly as relevant as how it looks as opposed to what it reasoned the statute.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_02]: I wrote about this yesterday on the website and talked about in the podcast for me.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_02]: you get 5, 6, 7th rounds if you get either big-time players or major contributors, that's a bonus.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_02]: And at that point, I have zero issue taking a shot at the guy.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_02]: And if it doesn't pan out, you wasted a fifth round pick.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_02]: Is that the end of the world?
- 22:14[SPEAKER_02]: I personally don't think so.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_02]: Just like for example, they had three fifth round picks this year.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_02]: I'd love for them to take a swipe at tail and grade from Arkansas because he's got freakish skills even though he
- 22:27[SPEAKER_02]: But there's something there, and to me, we would have been worth a shot.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like, sure, I don't know that I do anything before a fifth round pick, but I would have zeroish.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_02]: But I'm with you, I think he's gonna, somebody's gonna put in, I'm thinking maybe a third.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was probably the team, I was listening to Mick Shay earlier and he was talking about the jets having the three first round picks and possibly being willing to let go one of them.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: But I think if you don't have a situation like that, you're probably looking at it.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: One, yeah, with three first round picks, I mean, and they don't have a very, their quarterback situation is not all that great.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know, something like that one's probably been, but if you don't see a team like that do it, then yeah, I think you're talking, I think it's probably gonna be third or fourth, but I mean, we'll kind of have a very much of an unknown with the supplemental draft and how teams are going to treat it in today's NFL.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, just,
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: with betting in general, within college football and NFL, with teams, that's a big known.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, ooh.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: Within our organization, especially when we do the Miami Heat podcast, right?
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: The big deal was about Terry Rose Ear, how he was investigated by the FBI.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the he lost a lot of money with that as one of the lost picks when they had to trade him for that as well.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you're giving up maybe a fifth rounder or a sixth rounder, right?
- 23:56[SPEAKER_00]: For a guy who may potentially
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: not even start in Miami.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't even think this is Jeff Haffley and John Erick Sullivan's MO of drafting guys with questionable character issues, at least back from John Erick Sullivan's Green Bay drafting days.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember Green Bay drafting a guy that had, you know,
- 24:20[SPEAKER_00]: slightly murky character issues.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: The only issues was maybe past injury issues or production issues like their profile on guys is pretty clean based on my previous research.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't even think it supports the fact for this organization, at least for the top two dolphins decision makers, to even make a pick in this supplemental draft for for Brendan Sorsby.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_02]: I guess that wouldn't surprise me if they did.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not anticipating they're going to wind up getting in.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_02]: I do think it's worth a shot.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_02]: And obviously, his agent said today, apparently, that 26 teams reached out to him at discussions about source.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, he's going to get grilled.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to say all the right things.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: If he slips up in the NFL after coming into the league with that, I think there is going to be pretty close to zero tolerance policy.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_02]: But again,
- 25:18[SPEAKER_02]: If the Dolphins flame a six round pick or fifth round pick on him, I don't think it's the world.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: Do we find out what teams submitted, right?
- 25:27[SPEAKER_01]: Robes are going to find out if a team, if one, at least one does and they end up with him.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_01]: But like let's say that somebody does submit a second round pick form and the Dolphins submitted a six round pick.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_01]: Do we ever find out what teams submitted?
- 25:42[SPEAKER_02]: a good question.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_02]: And I was wondering about them myself last night, I'm trying to recall and I honestly don't recall.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_00]: We'd have to go back to the total prior days for the supplemental draft.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think it just goes and then they submit the selection to Levy.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, if they if all these teams passed on this within this round or I wonder how that process goes to be honest.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_02]: Would you like to know how that process goes?
- 26:07[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't like to know how that process.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I'll try to make it as quick as I can.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_02]: So, every team will submit a bid for Brendan Sorsby if there's a bid.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_02]: Now, if the highest round wins, if there are two bids in the same round, then you go by the draft order, the draft order works like this.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_02]: Teams are separated into three tiers.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_02]: Tier one are the teams that won six or fewer games last year.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_02]: Among those 10 teams last year, among those 10 teams, they have a weighted lottery.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_02]: They establish an order from one to 10.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_02]: Then you have the teams that won more than six games, but didn't make the playoffs.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_02]: Those are teams 11 to 18.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_02]: Dolphins are 11, because they were seven and 10, the only team with our record.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_02]: There's a weighted lottery for that group.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_02]: Whoever wins that lottery becomes team 11 and down the road and then the final 12, 14 teams are the teams that made the playoffs last year.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_02]: They have their own way to lottery ranking them from 1 to 14.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_02]: They go at the end of the 18.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_02]: There you have your final order.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_02]: That's how they break the tie.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_02]: If two teams submit a bit in the same round.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_01]: And something I heard earlier with that is it teams that have more than one pick in the same rally, like if the jets, for example, they got those three first round picks.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_01]: They can decide, like they can say which one they're submitting.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_02]: So like I wanted to, I thought it was their original pick in the round, but you, you very old might be right.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it was whatever heard on McShay show earlier, I maybe I miss heard it, but.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_02]: No, no, you might be right.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not not sure about that.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: So Jacob Rodriguez was in the building the same week that Zack Thomas was visiting as a guest, right?
- 27:51[SPEAKER_02]: They're not the same pair.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_00]: I know they're not the same player.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_00]: Zack Thomas has said, don't compare me to him.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: He said that he is much better than me, just based off his accolades.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 28:05[SPEAKER_00]: you're watching Rodriguez in camp.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_00]: You've seen Thomas in person play live.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_00]: Any early read on whether there is a connection to what, what, what, what Zach Thomas was.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_02]: Wait, wait to early and I'm gonna be honest and this is where I had seen,
- 28:27[SPEAKER_02]: National outlets saying rookie's moving up the debt chart and they put Jacob Rodriguez on there and I can tell you I was not the only one in the meter room all looking at each other going I'm sorry what I did not notice him one bit other than the punch out on in the last practice that was open to the media
- 28:49[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't see it.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_02]: I think somebody also somebody made the comment like watch is my dark horse pick for defensive rookie of the year and okay.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_02]: No, I didn't see anything.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_02]: It didn't sink in the spring that would really jazz me up heading to training camp other than the one punch out, which is what it did.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_02]: So all that text is tech.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_01]: So going back to Zach Thomas, right?
- 29:14[SPEAKER_01]: You saw his training camp days as well.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_01]: Did he show up in training camp?
- 29:18[SPEAKER_01]: But he was obviously very well known for his study habits, his ability to diagnose plays, to be at the spot before the running back stuff like that.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_01]: Did that show up in training camps with him as well?
- 29:30[SPEAKER_01]: Did he do that same studying in practices?
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: Or was that more of a game time thing that he kind of made his plan and took off?
- 29:38[SPEAKER_02]: You're asking me to remember 30 years ago, but my recollection is like the do was always around the ball and quickly, like for Jimmy Johnson to like immediately give the starting job that if you remember that office isn't they had signed Jack Jack Del Rio was an established veteran one of you guys agree and is back to sorry sorry Jack, this guy's going to start like very quickly.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_02]: That he blew away Jimmy Johnson and you could.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_02]: Tell, immediately, the instincts were off the charts with that guy.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_02]: He was one that massively, I'll throw another name out on my way, just for one of some props here.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_02]: Devon Bess was a rookie for agent from Hawaii, that first training camp, I'm like, I'm not going to question what his dude's always opened.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_02]: He is always open.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_02]: I, the field this guy had for finding open spots and zones was absolutely amazing.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm trying to like, great working performances, guys, we immediately like jumped out those were two guys like that.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_02]: But no, I didn't say that.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_02]: And again, I don't want to overstate it because it was spring practices.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_02]: But let's just say, for example, tell me this for example, from the draft to the end of the offseason program, my optimism level confidence level has increased
- 30:58[SPEAKER_02]: with King Proctor, with Chris Johnson, with Kyle Lewis, and with Jacob Rodriguez, I'm still waiting.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna be honest.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: A little bit of hope, Yum, for a lot of dolphins, fans, you're putting out their Allen.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_02]: And remember, I'm supposed to, somebody is supposed to be very negative.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_00]: A final question, we know you got to run pretty soon.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: Training camp is somewhere around late July, very early August.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_00]: Three things that you're watching from day one that will tell you whether 2026 is going in that right direction.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_02]: In training camp?
- 31:41[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if anything's going to tell me in training camp.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: or joint practices, there you go, joint practices will tell you a better story.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_02]: Chop Robinson, is there something there, or is he, is he, is he still on the road to Boston or is he gonna take a mix to starville?
- 32:04[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, oh, that's for Corny, he would be one.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_02]: And looking at more, some of the young guys can, to me, the 2026 season again is about establishing the foundation.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_02]: It's about developing some young players who you can contend with in 2027 and beyond.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_02]: And some of them, it's not, it's not the veteran free agents that they sign.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_02]: It's mostly the draft fix and the second and third year players who have yet to take that step.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_02]: So Kenneth grants another one.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_02]: I want to see more.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_02]: I want to notice him way more than I noticed him last year.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_02]: Chop Robinson.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_02]: It sees it lumping Jonah in there too, but I don't know that he's indispensable.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_02]: Sure, sure would be nice if he could take a step, where all dolphins have a solid starter in right guard for a few years, not down the road.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_02]: Outside of that, Malik will us obviously, but I'd be more interested in what Malik will
- 33:04[SPEAKER_02]: In the regular season, because I think Malik Wilson's one of those who's never going to look as good in practice as to a did.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_02]: He might not look.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's not going to be as consistent as his queen yours.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe that's what some of the dolphin beat writers are talking about.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_02]: But again, there's you don't have a lot of wall factor with when yours and with Malik.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_02]: And the question is, again, can he eliminate just those, those waves where it's going to dip beyond that?
- 33:35[SPEAKER_02]: Do you have a second running back on the roster?
- 33:38[SPEAKER_02]: I was not, not liking what I was seeing from Jalen Wright in the spring practices.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_02]: And I go back to last off season when he was showing those social media posts where he was jacked upon jacked.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_02]: and expecting this guy's going to bust out in the year two and it didn't happen and I don't know, maybe it's one of those guys who's where the instincts are starting out there and he's a guy who's also people talking about the speed.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's fast when he's wearing a straight line.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_02]: Not a whole lot of wiggle.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, those are some of the things those are some of the guys.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_00]: Well, Alan, thanks so much for joining us.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see you at training camp in person as we'll
- 34:21[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, you time chose.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_02]: Virtual.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: I put this here on scouting the fins part of the direct precarious podcast feed all support of the five reasons sports and that work, as always, y'all go fins.
