- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 1: All Right, coming up on NHL Unscripted, Centefil and sixty
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Little Oscars recap Big Night Percenters and of course
- 0:27Speaker 1: One Battle after another. Terrific guest and Andrew Ferrens, He's
- 0:31Speaker 1: got stories about kidnapping prospects is Edmonton, what it's like
- 0:34Speaker 1: playing for a coach that doesn't speak English and playing
- 0:36Speaker 1: for a legendary coach who isn't a big fan of yours.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Plus we'll talk about Austin Matthews' injury and Leon Bisetle.
- 0:43Speaker 1: But we begin with stolen valor. All right, tell us
- 0:46Speaker 1: get this lower down, the rundown, and this is what
- 0:47Speaker 1: we're leading with.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Jad.
- 0:49Speaker 3: I'm in Denver. It's unbelievable.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Penguin's Avalanche, great game on Prime ESPN's the Great Bob
- 0:54Speaker 1: was choosing, ready to call the game, and I look up.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I see the nord Ks.
- 0:56Speaker 1: My, oh my god, they're w on the nord Ea
- 0:57Speaker 1: Jersey tonight. Like yeah, go to the stupid ear shop.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Quebec starter jacket, A couple of average looking.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Hood like ninety five dollars.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I'm not tropping niney if I gonna spend ninety five
- 1:07Speaker 1: dollars in Hooey, I'll do it love all Provence.
- 1:09Speaker 3: I'm not gonna do it in your bootleg hoodie in Denver.
- 1:11Speaker 1: But I'm walking around and seeing the amount of people
- 1:13Speaker 1: wearing McKinnon Nordiek's jerseys or like mccar Nordiaks from like
- 1:16Speaker 1: they really they have wrapped up in this thing. And
- 1:18Speaker 1: for you in town guys from Quebec ripping off the
- 1:21Speaker 1: Nordiaks again, I was up two minds. The one hand,
- 1:24Speaker 1: I'm like, dude that you know front Pops and I'm
- 1:26Speaker 1: picturing Stefan fies. But at the same time they got
- 1:29Speaker 1: drilled seven to two. Good ran it right out of Resacon.
- 1:32Speaker 1: You must have been thrilled with that result. It was
- 1:34Speaker 1: all Pittsburgh.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Yeah, They'm glad they got rammed up the ass after
- 1:37Speaker 4: you stolen BA. It's I'm not gonna stay long on
- 1:41Speaker 4: this just because I already had my diatribe and screamed
- 1:46Speaker 4: from the rooftops and nobody listened. But again it's embarrassing,
- 1:50Speaker 4: like get your own jersey, get you stole. The team
- 1:53Speaker 4: was sold from out, it was sold from under from Quebec.
- 1:57Speaker 4: We thought we were getting a team back. We haven't
- 1:59Speaker 4: gotten a team back. I just I that's all I
- 2:02Speaker 4: gotta say. I I well deserved seven to I hope
- 2:05Speaker 4: every time they wear the Nordiks jersey they get absolutely
- 2:09Speaker 4: dog walked every single time.
- 2:10Speaker 1: To your point, Nate, this year they are two two
- 2:12Speaker 1: and two and they wear the Nordicks jerseys. They are
- 2:14Speaker 1: a fave of the team, even I think last year
- 2:15Speaker 1: they were not particularly good when they wear the Nordick jersey.
- 2:17Speaker 3: That is the revenge of the French in the Cape
- 2:19Speaker 3: a Qua.
- 2:20Speaker 5: I love the look of the jerseys, but I can't
- 2:23Speaker 5: comment on the about the Quebec part because I'm not
- 2:26Speaker 5: from Quebec and I don't want to.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I don't want to.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Jersey is fired.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Fire, get it.
- 2:32Speaker 5: It is great, But I'm not going to comment on
- 2:35Speaker 5: the other part because I'm not from Quebec.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I'll let I'll let tal, I'll let tal JD get
- 2:39Speaker 2: to that go ahead.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Stolen valary are much more classic Americans, stolen land stolen.
- 2:46Speaker 2: As the oscars from Alaska.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Tell what do you think that jersey was awesome? It's
- 2:52Speaker 1: our remembrance about great the Nordiks are.
- 2:54Speaker 6: It's a great jersey and a great logo. They own
- 2:56Speaker 6: the I P, so legally they can do whatever they
- 2:58Speaker 6: want with it. All I would suggest is that these
- 3:00Speaker 6: teams that were the throwbacks, like the Hurricanes wearing the
- 3:03Speaker 6: Whaler or the Nordiaks wearing the excuse me, the as
- 3:07Speaker 6: wearing the Nordics, play an exhibition game in the city
- 3:10Speaker 6: wearing the jerseys. That's all I'm saying. Bring it to
- 3:13Speaker 6: the original city. Hurricane should wear the Whalers jerseys in
- 3:17Speaker 6: Hartford for an exhibition game after wear the DKs jerseys
- 3:20Speaker 6: in Quebec city for an exhibition game.
- 3:23Speaker 3: And I think that will make gd JD a little
- 3:26Speaker 3: less sour on the whole thing.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll donate to the cause or something, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 4: some nonprofits in Quebec and Hertford. But yeah, let's move
- 3:34Speaker 4: on from this because I'm gonna say something even worse
- 3:37Speaker 4: than what I've said already to start the show.
- 3:39Speaker 1: All right, Well, we are the world on the heels
- 3:41Speaker 1: are the incredible Olympics and the Four Nation tournaments. We
- 3:44Speaker 1: got more best on best NHL and HL Players Association.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Now it's got Monday, the twenty twenty eight World Cup
- 3:49Speaker 1: of Hockey taking place in Calgary, Edmonton and wait for it, Prague.
- 3:53Speaker 1: That all goes together. Yeah, Calgary, Edmonton and Prague. All right,
- 3:57Speaker 1: we got the checks in there, let's go Calgary's news.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Staleia Arena allegedly will be opened by then. The tournament,
- 4:02Speaker 1: semi finals and final play at Rogers Place in Edmondson,
- 4:04Speaker 1: and we can.
- 4:04Speaker 3: All agree that's a great rank. Tournament will feature eight teams,
- 4:07Speaker 3: no word you have.
- 4:08Speaker 1: We'll bring back the ugly trophy that Frank Gary designed
- 4:10Speaker 1: for the two thousand and four World Cup, but I
- 4:12Speaker 1: kick it to Nate as the soul American. This is
- 4:15Speaker 1: pretty massive. You know this as well as anybody. The Americans,
- 4:17Speaker 1: they care when it comes to their country. World Baseball
- 4:20Speaker 1: Classic USA loses, people are pissed. How do we lose
- 4:22Speaker 1: to Venezuela. And yet you know when it comes to hockey,
- 4:25Speaker 1: they really care on a national level, not necessarily about
- 4:28Speaker 1: their team. So we've seen what's happened with the four
- 4:30Speaker 1: Nations Canada one. Now in the Olympics, America wins. What
- 4:33Speaker 1: do you think the level excitement's going to be for us?
- 4:35Speaker 1: Say now that they've beaten Canada and we'll try to
- 4:38Speaker 1: repeat the World Cup pressure.
- 4:40Speaker 2: The pressure's on the US now after winning it.
- 4:42Speaker 5: And I think, you know, after what I mean, triple
- 4:45Speaker 5: gold obviously with all the different Olympic what a game
- 4:50Speaker 5: it is. Yeah, it's been. It's been great for USA hockey.
- 4:53Speaker 5: But I think for this the World Cup. And I
- 4:56Speaker 5: was talking about this with our colleague Mike Rupp, and
- 4:59Speaker 5: I don't know what you guys think, but is there
- 5:01Speaker 5: a chance, Like I think there's non negotiables for obviously
- 5:04Speaker 5: eight countries you have US, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Czech, youa.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Those are the five, Like I think they're non negotiable.
- 5:11Speaker 5: And what if I mean, because you won't have you're
- 5:15Speaker 5: not going to have all NHL players on Switzerland and
- 5:19Speaker 5: Germany Slovakia I mean Slovakia I think has earned it too.
- 5:22Speaker 5: But what if you add a team Europe or maybe
- 5:25Speaker 5: a team something a little bit different. I think just
- 5:29Speaker 5: because you know, you see, I mean, I don't know
- 5:32Speaker 5: if they're going to be able to you know, I mean,
- 5:34Speaker 5: you're trying to sell the product of this game, of
- 5:37Speaker 5: the World Cup. And if you have, you know, like
- 5:39Speaker 5: we did the last World Cup with Team Europe, team
- 5:41Speaker 5: North America, like Russia, just another team if they're able to,
- 5:47Speaker 5: which would be amazing. If they're there, that's another team.
- 5:50Speaker 2: But this is this is great.
- 5:52Speaker 5: I mean I'm pumped for this. I mean to be
- 5:55Speaker 5: in Edmonton, Calgary, Prague. I mean, this is gonna be. Uh,
- 5:58Speaker 5: this is gonna be all time.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Say I suck at us not getting a place to play.
- 6:04Speaker 4: That's pretty funny after winning, after sweeping, because Nate's right
- 6:09Speaker 4: with the Paralympic gold medal that canad against us. They
- 6:13Speaker 4: beat us yet again. That was a great game too. Man,
- 6:16Speaker 4: it's so impressive to watch those guys scooting around out there.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Well, I just love the marketing for it. It's a
- 6:23Speaker 3: seated rivalry.
- 6:24Speaker 4: I mean I was just one of the It's one
- 6:26Speaker 4: of the great marketing place I was.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I was, Do I laugh at this? Do I not?
- 6:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it's incredible, but yeah, the event's great. I mean,
- 6:34Speaker 4: you know Gary's got in the NHL have now got
- 6:37Speaker 4: a system in place. I think they've realized that these
- 6:41Speaker 4: best on best minus Russia are very important I think
- 6:47Speaker 4: to growing the game, not only you know, worldwide, but
- 6:51Speaker 4: specifically in the US. I think USA fans love it. Anytime.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Any of my decrepit friends that don't watch any hockey,
- 7:00Speaker 4: but they come out of the woodwork for a USA
- 7:02Speaker 4: game just to ship I think is important because those guys,
- 7:07Speaker 4: you know, those people, you know, they they generate revenue,
- 7:11Speaker 4: and you see the sign ups with youth hockey. I
- 7:12Speaker 4: think it's important. So it's gonna be great. I agree
- 7:15Speaker 4: with Nate. I think you know, I think they're gonna
- 7:17Speaker 4: keep trying to add teams maybe, but you know, right
- 7:20Speaker 4: now it's gonna It's nice to see prog get a
- 7:22Speaker 4: little bit of a nod there, and you could see
- 7:24Speaker 4: the excitement on Posternok when he was announcing it like
- 7:27Speaker 4: like a kid. He looked like a twelve year old kid,
- 7:29Speaker 4: just being like, yes, it's back.
- 7:32Speaker 5: And you can even add too that it's gonna be
- 7:35Speaker 5: NHL rules, so it's gonna be a little bit different,
- 7:37Speaker 5: a little bit harder. There's gonna be fighting probably, I
- 7:40Speaker 5: mean we will probably get that, so another you add
- 7:44Speaker 5: that to the mix, and yeah, it's a lot of hockey.
- 7:46Speaker 5: But at the end of the day, I think this
- 7:48Speaker 5: is so good for the game and for hockey, and
- 7:52Speaker 5: we we want this, we need this right.
- 7:56Speaker 1: That brings us to wanting a needing and that's the
- 7:58Speaker 1: episode owners wanting and needing a Stanley Cup.
- 8:00Speaker 3: But now it's Leon.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Buysidle is taut put the Oilers to the postseason. Tell yeah,
- 8:06Speaker 1: very good by Tell give out for the remainder of
- 8:08Speaker 1: the regular season. Lower body injury sustained Sunday night against Nashville.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Edmonton beat San Jose five to three Tuesday Night. But
- 8:15Speaker 1: the Oilers, this is interesting, JD. You forget about trying
- 8:17Speaker 1: to win a Stanley Cup. Forget about trying to get
- 8:19Speaker 1: to a Stanley Cup. How about trying to win the
- 8:21Speaker 1: division and even make the playoffs. It's a dogfight right
- 8:24Speaker 1: down the Pacific. They cannot take themselves for granted here.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Yeah, everybody in the Pacific's trying to lose their way
- 8:29Speaker 4: into the playoffs. Right the Dogs are gonna win. First place, Oilers, Yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 4: first place, the first place Oilers right now. Listen. I
- 8:38Speaker 4: think that was a big win last night against San Jose.
- 8:41Speaker 4: San Jose has three games in hand. I think on everybody.
- 8:44Speaker 4: But you know, Vegas hasn't played well. You look at
- 8:47Speaker 4: I mean any team in that division, I'd be worried
- 8:51Speaker 4: not I think, listen, Vegas, Edmonton and Anaheim are gonna
- 8:54Speaker 4: make it. I just think over time, those other teams
- 8:57Speaker 4: are going to fall off a little bit. I think
- 8:58Speaker 4: the closest team now is six points in Seattle. But
- 9:02Speaker 4: you know, getting Leon healthy is going to be important.
- 9:04Speaker 4: But this could potentially be like where they end up
- 9:09Speaker 4: in the standings. I think it's never been more important
- 9:13Speaker 4: to get the first round, not the first round by,
- 9:16Speaker 4: but to get a wild card team if you're Edmonton
- 9:19Speaker 4: in the Pacific, because you're going to have a way
- 9:22Speaker 4: easier path than the than the Metropolitan, not the Metropolitan, Jesus,
- 9:26Speaker 4: the Central will have so but you know, Leon Dreys
- 9:30Speaker 4: will be back. I think he'll be He'll make it
- 9:32Speaker 4: back for the playoffs. But again, they have a lot
- 9:35Speaker 4: of players on this team that can play hockey, and
- 9:38Speaker 4: whenever Leon falls off or somebody, they always got Hymen,
- 9:42Speaker 4: they got NuGen Hopkins, and let's not forget they still
- 9:45Speaker 4: got Mick Jesus. So they played really well against against
- 9:49Speaker 4: San Jose and uh yeah, I'm not listen, I'm not.
- 9:53Speaker 4: I'm not. I'm still not worried about him. No panic yet,
- 9:56Speaker 4: not a pannikin.
- 9:57Speaker 1: But also this King's five points by in Vegas for
- 9:59Speaker 1: third and Pacific they're separate only by one point right now,
- 10:03Speaker 1: Nap d Anaheim, Vegas and Edmondson one point.
- 10:05Speaker 5: It's tight right now, It's really tight. And I agree
- 10:08Speaker 5: with you Da on this one too. I think you
- 10:10Speaker 5: look at teams when they get injuries and they lose
- 10:12Speaker 5: star players, and sometimes it can make a team defend better.
- 10:17Speaker 5: And I think for the Wilers that'll be the case.
- 10:20Speaker 5: You know, you see them talking about you see Hymen
- 10:22Speaker 5: and NuGen Hopkins and all I'm talking about how we
- 10:24Speaker 5: have to defend, we have to defend, and they did.
- 10:26Speaker 5: They play a really good game against San Jose. And
- 10:28Speaker 5: I think that you know, having NuGen Hopkins too, he
- 10:32Speaker 5: doesn't play, didn't play center last night, but he can
- 10:34Speaker 5: play center, so you have that as well in your
- 10:36Speaker 5: back pocket if you're not blocked. So it's it's a
- 10:41Speaker 5: silver lining for them, I think, because if they can
- 10:43Speaker 5: play good hockey down the stretch without Leon and get
- 10:45Speaker 5: him back playing, well, that's that's a nice, nice feather
- 10:49Speaker 5: in their cap going to the playoffs. And who's I
- 10:53Speaker 5: guess the question is is who's going to run with
- 10:55Speaker 5: it here for the for the Pacific Division, because right
- 10:58Speaker 5: now it's.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Just I think Vegas is great. Worries Vegas worries me
- 11:02Speaker 4: more than any of those other two, like more than
- 11:05Speaker 4: Anaheim and Edmonton. Like Vegas the one that worries me.
- 11:07Speaker 4: They are like listless out there. It's just like and
- 11:10Speaker 4: they got no goaltending. At least Edmonton they've found Connor Ingram. Yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 4: like at least he's kind of stolen the net.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Vegas, not Carl Hart would be the answer. It has
- 11:20Speaker 3: not been the answer right now.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Is Vegas still in Philly or somewhere?
- 11:24Speaker 1: Meantime, speaking of interries of stars, Austin Matthews is a
- 11:27Speaker 1: challenging season Toronto. Officially over captain the Americans a golden
- 11:31Speaker 1: at the Olympics, but the Leaf fans was a tough
- 11:33Speaker 1: year in Toronto, There's no question about it. Injuries, criticism
- 11:36Speaker 1: from fans and media, career lows and goals and points
- 11:39Speaker 1: grade three mc al Turners left fleg following a knee
- 11:42Speaker 1: on knee from Radco Goudas. Before we get to the
- 11:44Speaker 1: Goudas hit, because you know, people a upset about that.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Thoughts were the Leafs. Nate and Austin go from here.
- 11:49Speaker 1: He's still got a couple of years left in our contract.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I don't think Chief's going to be back, and Craig
- 11:53Speaker 1: Ruby's gonna be gone. I don't think Brad trick Living's
- 11:55Speaker 1: gonna be back because he's got one year left in
- 11:56Speaker 1: his deal, so the price tak about him, and maybe
- 11:58Speaker 1: they stook about Austin Matthews. I don't think it's that
- 12:00Speaker 1: time yet. I think it's a little premature. But do
- 12:02Speaker 1: you think this could be the last time we see
- 12:04Speaker 1: the LEAs No.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I think it's premature too.
- 12:07Speaker 5: I would really like to see what Brad Treelyvin can
- 12:09Speaker 5: do this offseason if he's still here, and how he
- 12:14Speaker 5: can retool this team because they obviously still have some
- 12:18Speaker 5: pillars on their team and some really good players that
- 12:20Speaker 5: they can build around. So I would like to see
- 12:22Speaker 5: what he can do. Granted, there's you know, there's a
- 12:26Speaker 5: couple of teams that I've thought of about that where
- 12:28Speaker 5: Austin Matthews could go. It would be a good fit.
- 12:31Speaker 5: But I would like to see. I would like to
- 12:34Speaker 5: see what Brad sreven can do and see how he can,
- 12:37Speaker 5: you know, get this team back to the playoffs next year,
- 12:39Speaker 5: because they should be a playoff team, they really should.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I mean, this year was a disaster, and there's been
- 12:47Speaker 5: a dark cloud over this team since the goodest situation,
- 12:51Speaker 5: and hopefully after this season with Austin Matthews getting healthy
- 12:55Speaker 5: and them retooling this team, that they can get back
- 12:58Speaker 5: to you know, the Leafs they've that they've been the
- 13:00Speaker 5: last ten years, nine nine ten years, so at all
- 13:05Speaker 5: there is.
- 13:06Speaker 4: I listen delusions of grandeur by the Toronto fan base
- 13:10Speaker 4: and the Toronto ownership. It is time, it is time,
- 13:15Speaker 4: it is time. I don't know what they built this
- 13:17Speaker 4: absolute Frankenstein monster this offseason. You know, way too many injuries, unfortunate,
- 13:23Speaker 4: but I don't know when your core guys are standing
- 13:27Speaker 4: out there and I know this has been beat to death,
- 13:29Speaker 4: but when Austin gets hurt, you have Morgan Riley and
- 13:32Speaker 4: Willie Nielanders saying we didn't see it, we didn't see it,
- 13:35Speaker 4: when they're clearly there's still photos of them staring at
- 13:39Speaker 4: the injury. And then now more and I heard Elliott
- 13:42Speaker 4: Friedman talked about how Tree Living wasn't even there, ended
- 13:46Speaker 4: up calling a bunch of the guys from the road
- 13:49Speaker 4: when he found out. And then Morgan Riley tries to
- 13:51Speaker 4: he fights yesterday against Seattle because they touched the goalie,
- 13:54Speaker 4: and I'm like, it's too little, too late, Morgan Riley gone.
- 13:58Speaker 4: If you can get something, trade Austin Matthew for two
- 14:02Speaker 4: young studs and a couple picks Willie Nielander, or keep them,
- 14:06Speaker 4: whatever you want to do. I think the only guy
- 14:08Speaker 4: I would keep is Matthew. NY's the rest I think
- 14:10Speaker 4: would be on the block. Just try to rebuild this
- 14:13Speaker 4: on the fly. Re The biggest issue is listen, credit
- 14:17Speaker 4: to Toronto. They've having build a team that can make
- 14:20Speaker 4: the playoffs year in and year out and play meaningful hockey.
- 14:23Speaker 4: I think it's very important. It's not to be discounted.
- 14:25Speaker 4: But right now you have nothing in the prospect pool,
- 14:28Speaker 4: you have nothing in the draft in terms of draft capital.
- 14:32Speaker 4: You need to rebuild all of that and I think
- 14:34Speaker 4: the only way to do that is with your top guys.
- 14:36Speaker 4: So I think for me, it's the hardest pill I
- 14:39Speaker 4: think to swallow. And the NHL can't have too many
- 14:42Speaker 4: years of Toronto being a bad team, a seller dweller.
- 14:46Speaker 4: But I just think it's time. I think Austin too,
- 14:49Speaker 4: It's just been too much shit, and I think go
- 14:51Speaker 4: get what you can. Somebody would pay whatever you want
- 14:55Speaker 4: to call it of the Rants the Kings ransom for
- 14:58Speaker 4: Austin Matthews at the center position. I think Nate and
- 15:01Speaker 4: I would Utah a couple of teams, Utah La l
- 15:04Speaker 4: a trade by field, trade Brandon Portray, Brant Clark for
- 15:08Speaker 4: Ams a couple of times.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I think you're asking for us a lot of this
- 15:12Speaker 1: fan base. So you're asking a fan base which is
- 15:14Speaker 1: star for cups in sixty seven nine straight years, you've
- 15:17Speaker 1: made the plash, you've been great in the regular season,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and after one terrible year, you're saying, blow it all up.
- 15:21Speaker 3: And also, they're gonna be. They're gonna stink.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Imagine telling the Yankees you're gonna stink, Lakers, You're gonna stink.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Cowboy's gonna stink. That's a tough thing to say to
- 15:27Speaker 1: your fan base that is so loyal and so hard
- 15:29Speaker 1: bitten and so expect they shell out all this.
- 15:32Speaker 3: But you want them to stink for three years?
- 15:34Speaker 4: Yes, I agree, I agree you you can't, but you can't,
- 15:38Speaker 4: but they won't. But they're gonna be.
- 15:40Speaker 2: If you do that, JDI, then they're gonna be ship
- 15:42Speaker 2: next year.
- 15:43Speaker 4: I live in a world of hypotheticals, and this is
- 15:45Speaker 4: a big hypothetical.
- 15:48Speaker 1: I can't see it happening, but I understand you to
- 15:50Speaker 1: this point why it could potentially happen.
- 15:52Speaker 3: That's a spect it.
- 15:53Speaker 4: But buy Field Bran clarkifle first round.
- 15:56Speaker 3: No, I need more than I don't think bifle.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Is that good. Utah I like Utah better. Utah is
- 16:00Speaker 2: a good I think give.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Me will you go get it from Utah? Can't get
- 16:05Speaker 4: some back.
- 16:08Speaker 5: TJ Againla for sure add a maybe you add a
- 16:15Speaker 5: deep defenseman to They got a lot of assets, they do,
- 16:21Speaker 5: and they had a lot of too. They had a
- 16:22Speaker 5: lot of Andy's best buddies. With this with Clayton Keller,
- 16:26Speaker 5: I mean Ryan Sam wants to make a big splash.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Could be.
- 16:33Speaker 1: The other part of is people are crapping on Radko
- 16:35Speaker 1: Gudis and they hit after the game. Head coach Craig
- 16:37Speaker 1: Bruce dirty dirty, the angel distant agreet five game suspension
- 16:41Speaker 1: is five the right amount?
- 16:43Speaker 3: Too few or too many?
- 16:44Speaker 1: Nate because people are talking about repeat offender, but it's
- 16:47Speaker 1: been like seven years since he suspended before. Like I
- 16:49Speaker 1: I think Raco Goudas is definitely a tough player, A
- 16:52Speaker 1: physical player at times can be dirty. But when somebody
- 16:54Speaker 1: said repeat offender. I got, well's sound like he's Olf Samuelson.
- 16:57Speaker 2: How do you feel it?
- 16:58Speaker 5: He plays on the edge and I and I had
- 17:01Speaker 5: Goody as a teammate. I had him as a roommate's
- 17:04Speaker 5: first two months in the league. He lived with me,
- 17:06Speaker 5: and Goody plays hard, he plays, he walks the line obviously,
- 17:09Speaker 5: and he's been suspended and he's done some things that
- 17:11Speaker 5: I've shaked my head at, you know, and this last
- 17:13Speaker 5: one I did again. And I was guessing anywhere from
- 17:18Speaker 5: being the five to seven game range, and I didn't
- 17:22Speaker 5: think it was too far off. I know people wanted
- 17:24Speaker 5: ten and however many of the people were freaking out,
- 17:26Speaker 5: but it's just too much. I thought they got it right.
- 17:30Speaker 5: I mean, it's a tough job, the process of going
- 17:34Speaker 5: through that, getting the suspension. You know, it's a bunch
- 17:37Speaker 5: of guys that are going through. It's not just George
- 17:40Speaker 5: making the call. So I think that it was it
- 17:43Speaker 5: was the right call at the end of the day.
- 17:45Speaker 5: And five games is lots a lot of games. And
- 17:48Speaker 5: so but for Radco, you know, I love the guy,
- 17:52Speaker 5: but he he's the best way to describe him because
- 17:56Speaker 5: he's a hazard on the ice and the best and
- 17:58Speaker 5: worst way, So you go both sides of it.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I love the guy as well, I
- 18:05Speaker 4: know him a little bit. I think he's a great
- 18:07Speaker 4: human off the ice. I think it should have been seven.
- 18:09Speaker 4: I think seven was the right number. I think it
- 18:12Speaker 4: would have satisfied a lot of people. Now, the bigger
- 18:15Speaker 4: issue is, you know, there is so much calling into
- 18:18Speaker 4: question right now, the Department of Players Safety. It's been crazy,
- 18:21Speaker 4: Like George Parrows came out had a statement, I everybody's
- 18:24Speaker 4: kind of like more to me, it's more the you know,
- 18:28Speaker 4: it's it's not because I actually had a long conversation
- 18:30Speaker 4: with Paris at the Olympics and I was really you know, impressed,
- 18:33Speaker 4: and just you know, obviously how big of a guy
- 18:36Speaker 4: isn't scary he is, but how how much he understands
- 18:39Speaker 4: the process and how much goes into it, and how
- 18:41Speaker 4: he's got so many guys ex players that are helping
- 18:44Speaker 4: him as well. And you know, I just think that
- 18:47Speaker 4: if it's there's this many questions going around and there's
- 18:50Speaker 4: this many you know, this much guffying by you know,
- 18:53Speaker 4: Connor McDavid and Alan Walsh and all of these people
- 18:57Speaker 4: saying we're not protecting the players. It gets really tough
- 19:00Speaker 4: because I'm like, you got to think, what's the other
- 19:02Speaker 4: what's the alternative? Okay, let's just go black and white.
- 19:04Speaker 4: It's if you're a first time offender, it doesn't matter
- 19:07Speaker 4: first time or not. It's a suspendable offense. It's five games,
- 19:10Speaker 4: and it's ten games, and then it's twenty five games
- 19:13Speaker 4: and there's just no does not matter. If something is
- 19:16Speaker 4: borderline to not, you're out. And if you do it
- 19:18Speaker 4: that way, you know, you also got to think about that.
- 19:21Speaker 4: It's a lot of money coming out of the pockets
- 19:23Speaker 4: of players, and then maybe that could work because you're
- 19:27Speaker 4: gonna then put the onus on the players to be
- 19:30Speaker 4: more protective of each other. But can you ask that
- 19:33Speaker 4: of of players to like played not on the edge
- 19:37Speaker 4: like a rad co goutis like, if you're you're going
- 19:39Speaker 4: to spend them five ways. So it's like, you have
- 19:42Speaker 4: you think of that as people. I'm always like you,
- 19:44Speaker 4: you know, fans or somebody, you tell me what you
- 19:47Speaker 4: think it should be. But you got to think there's
- 19:49Speaker 4: so many things to weigh, and there's so many it's
- 19:51Speaker 4: it's not black and white.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Yeah, McDavid's quote if every time there's a suspension, everybody
- 19:56Speaker 1: complains about it. Why don't we take a look at
- 19:58Speaker 1: the process, figure out if there's a better way to
- 20:00Speaker 1: make sure that both parties are happy, because it seems
- 20:03Speaker 1: like there's a lot of frustration.
- 20:04Speaker 3: But I think it's a tough one. No matter what,
- 20:06Speaker 3: it seems like, people are gonna be said about something.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Yeah, no matter what, I mean, you're gonna get people
- 20:11Speaker 2: are going to be mad. We know that.
- 20:12Speaker 5: But I agree with with JD and and I think
- 20:15Speaker 5: if you know, George Paros brought in, I think he
- 20:19Speaker 5: would be more than happy to bring in Connor McDavid
- 20:21Speaker 5: and say, hey, let's here's our process.
- 20:23Speaker 2: This is how we do things.
- 20:24Speaker 5: This is this is our team, this is how we
- 20:27Speaker 5: look at every game and angles of hits, suspensions, whatever
- 20:31Speaker 5: it may be. And and you know, and he maybe
- 20:33Speaker 5: he can give his two cents. I mean, if I'm
- 20:35Speaker 5: if I'm George and Connor says something, I've been no
- 20:38Speaker 5: problem having a conversation with him about it. And I
- 20:40Speaker 5: don't And I know George, and I don't think he
- 20:42Speaker 5: would have an issue with having a conversation with Connor too.
- 20:45Speaker 3: See what happens to the cards to that.
- 20:47Speaker 1: We'll get to Andrew Ferrens our special guests in second
- 20:49Speaker 1: but last topic of conversations, Little JD pov. This is
- 20:52Speaker 1: for Bob Bender. Bob loves the segment. He's been begging
- 20:55Speaker 1: for a JD POV, So we got one here, JD.
- 20:57Speaker 1: As you give me a quizical look. You've been traveling
- 21:00Speaker 1: to the Northeast the last few days the Sharks and
- 21:02Speaker 1: is quite the gauntlet. Buffalo, Boston, Montreal, Ottawa. So your
- 21:06Speaker 1: takeaway from the trip, not just from the Sharks, other teams.
- 21:08Speaker 1: You saw perhaps some culinary desserts, whatever you got jdpov.
- 21:13Speaker 4: Right the bird, Oh well, yeah you have. I mean, listen,
- 21:20Speaker 4: it's funny because my POV is more this and you
- 21:23Speaker 4: know not to get like, you know, in the weeds
- 21:25Speaker 4: in Nate. You know, I don't know if you've you know,
- 21:27Speaker 4: you've done some TV stuff, but being with the team
- 21:29Speaker 4: and being on the road with them, you forget, like
- 21:32Speaker 4: how much you took for granted the simple things of
- 21:36Speaker 4: like not the simple things, but like the staying in
- 21:38Speaker 4: the high in restaurants and the food and the travel
- 21:41Speaker 4: and like, you know, you're so used to being in
- 21:43Speaker 4: the daily grind of it and you're just like kind
- 21:45Speaker 4: of working and you'd get to like the Four Seasons
- 21:47Speaker 4: and you wouldn't even be in the room because you'd
- 21:49Speaker 4: throw your bags down, you go out and eat at
- 21:50Speaker 4: a high in restaurant. You'd come back late night, you'd
- 21:53Speaker 4: fall asleep, and you wouldn't even really enjoy it. So
- 21:56Speaker 4: like when I was there, you know, we stayed at
- 21:58Speaker 4: like the Four Seasons in Boston, and I was kind
- 22:00Speaker 4: of in the shower and I was like, oh, I
- 22:02Speaker 4: really should go, like, you know, grab a bite to eat.
- 22:04Speaker 4: And I'm like, you know what, just fucking enjoy the
- 22:07Speaker 4: Four Seasons right now. And I was just like, turn
- 22:09Speaker 4: that heat up to one hundred and ten and just
- 22:11Speaker 4: let it burn. Michelle, let it for I'm just like
- 22:15Speaker 4: I was like, I love I was using the spot.
- 22:19Speaker 4: I was like using the gym. It just I kind
- 22:21Speaker 4: of you forget that you are very lucky and it's
- 22:24Speaker 4: a privilege to play in the league, and it is
- 22:26Speaker 4: a lot of work and it's a lot of sacrifice,
- 22:28Speaker 4: but when you get there, there are so many little
- 22:30Speaker 4: things that you forget about. That was my POV is
- 22:34Speaker 4: enjoying the little things. As for the road trip, you know, Macklin.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Celebrities just generationally say it over and over again. Incredible.
- 22:43Speaker 4: The Sharks are battling hard for a playoff spot, you know,
- 22:46Speaker 4: and it's a good group of guys out there that
- 22:49Speaker 4: are kind of all pulling for each other. But yeah,
- 22:53Speaker 4: Macklin's a stud. And then I one kid I really
- 22:55Speaker 4: like pov Is I think is keep an eye on
- 22:58Speaker 4: it for him. Is well. Once calling graft who's the
- 23:00Speaker 4: Quinnipiac on drafted. He's very good player. But on defense,
- 23:04Speaker 4: Sam Dickinson is developing very quickly, and I wouldn't be
- 23:08Speaker 4: surprised if we're saying his name a lot more in
- 23:10Speaker 4: the next few years.
- 23:12Speaker 3: All right, great, Gdpova back, all right, still the cup.
- 23:18Speaker 3: We're going to talk to Andrew Ferrens. Of course, your
- 23:19Speaker 3: terrific career in the NHL.
- 23:21Speaker 1: He's got great stories about Alexei Coblazochara and torturing.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Some Edmonton oilers. That's coming up after this. An NHL inscripted.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Our next guest was drafted in the eighth round twour
- 23:44Speaker 1: in eighth o'braw with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the nineteen
- 23:46Speaker 1: ninety seven NHL Draft. You go on to play in
- 23:48Speaker 1: nine hundred and seven games of the Penguins, Flames, Bruins,
- 23:52Speaker 1: and Oilers, collecting two hundred and twenty five points and
- 23:54Speaker 1: seven hundred and fifty three pelia minutes. He won the
- 23:57Speaker 1: Memorial Cup with the Portland winter Hawks in nineteen ninety
- 24:00Speaker 1: eight and most supportedly hoisted the Stanley Cup with the
- 24:02Speaker 1: Bruins in two thousand eleven. Andrew Ferrence welcome to NHL
- 24:06Speaker 1: and scripted.
- 24:07Speaker 7: Well, thank you for the welcome. That's nice.
- 24:08Speaker 4: I like, and gave me the finger of Montreal.
- 24:12Speaker 7: Honestly, that's all people remember. I might as well, you
- 24:16Speaker 7: might as well lead with that, because if I go
- 24:17Speaker 7: back to Boston now, that's all anybody wants to talk about.
- 24:21Speaker 7: Not that I had any like highlight reel goals and stuff,
- 24:23Speaker 7: but that was.
- 24:23Speaker 1: A highlight that is definitely memorable. We'll get it to
- 24:26Speaker 1: your career just a second, Andrew. But I know even
- 24:28Speaker 1: worked with the NHL lately. What can you tell us
- 24:30Speaker 1: about your role there?
- 24:32Speaker 2: Oh?
- 24:32Speaker 7: Man, Well, I right after I retired. I think I
- 24:35Speaker 7: was retired for about six months. Before I started with
- 24:37Speaker 7: the league. I was always a union guy, you know,
- 24:40Speaker 7: I served as a union head. We went through the
- 24:43Speaker 7: two lockouts. So between that and some of the environmental
- 24:48Speaker 7: sustainability stuff I did when I was playing, I got
- 24:50Speaker 7: to know a lot of people in the league that
- 24:52Speaker 7: we're working there, and so yeah, towards the end of
- 24:55Speaker 7: my career, went back to school when I was up
- 24:57Speaker 7: in like when I was playing in Edmonton, and just
- 25:00Speaker 7: jumped into a role with the league or Social Impact,
- 25:02Speaker 7: Growth and Legislative Affairs department.
- 25:05Speaker 2: So we do all of that.
- 25:06Speaker 7: It's a long title, but Social Impacts obviously all of
- 25:09Speaker 7: our all the good stuff. I like to say it's
- 25:12Speaker 7: it's everything from pride to hockey fights, cancer to you know,
- 25:17Speaker 7: all the activations are our clubs do throughout the league.
- 25:21Speaker 7: The growth is obviously trying to grow the game, a
- 25:23Speaker 7: lot of participation stuff, so starting a street hockey league,
- 25:26Speaker 7: and uh, I want to I want to get into
- 25:29Speaker 7: a roller a lot more so we can we can
- 25:31Speaker 7: chat about that, but uh, and then Legislative affairs is
- 25:35Speaker 7: the government stuff. I don't do too much of that,
- 25:37Speaker 7: but yeah, so a little bit of all of that.
- 25:40Speaker 7: I think right now I'm taking on a little bit
- 25:42Speaker 7: more with our NHL Green platform and around sustainability, and
- 25:47Speaker 7: I don't want to talk about work all day. But
- 25:49Speaker 7: that's a bit of a bit of it's a bit
- 25:50Speaker 7: of everything well.
- 25:53Speaker 3: And heart legislative affairs and I go, oh my god,
- 25:56Speaker 3: can we take a nap? That sounds like too much work?
- 25:58Speaker 4: Yeah, Andrew, tell me a little bit. Like all your
- 26:01Speaker 4: work and all the titles you have, what's been kind
- 26:03Speaker 4: of the most rewarding thing through all this process for you?
- 26:09Speaker 2: Well, it's funny. I mean I I do.
- 26:13Speaker 7: You know you get invited to podcasts like this or
- 26:15Speaker 7: you know, you know, talk to hockey kids. I help
- 26:18Speaker 7: out with the high school here on Vancouver Island, and
- 26:21Speaker 7: so I teach you know, power skating and you know,
- 26:23Speaker 7: some of the skills stuff.
- 26:24Speaker 2: And went on.
- 26:25Speaker 7: But like if I ever get asked to talk like,
- 26:27Speaker 7: it's rarely about hockey. It's usually about all the off
- 26:30Speaker 7: ice stuff and you know, the opportunities that have opened
- 26:33Speaker 7: up during my career and at a community level and
- 26:36Speaker 7: getting to know people, like I said, the social impact stuff,
- 26:39Speaker 7: like I said at the beginning with the league. We
- 26:43Speaker 7: just got back from an NHL Pride game in Vancouver.
- 26:46Speaker 7: We've been doing those for three years. That community is
- 26:50Speaker 7: really incredible. I want to say, like just because of
- 26:54Speaker 7: the generational change that I've seen. Quick story on that. Like,
- 26:58Speaker 7: I was a kid, you know, growing up in Shard Park, Alberta,
- 27:02Speaker 7: just outside Edmonton, so Alberta boys, and I had a
- 27:06Speaker 7: friend that ran away from home, actually got kicked out,
- 27:09Speaker 7: but ended up on the streets of Vancouver for a decade.
- 27:14Speaker 7: He quit hockey. We're good friends and I actually connected
- 27:17Speaker 7: it with him when I was playing.
- 27:18Speaker 2: In the NHL.
- 27:19Speaker 7: We're going through play the Canucks and one of our
- 27:22Speaker 7: friends kind of reconnected us and he's like, yeah, I've
- 27:25Speaker 7: been living on the street for a decade, but I've
- 27:27Speaker 7: been also like I just came out. I'm finally out,
- 27:30Speaker 7: but like I couldn't come out when I was a
- 27:31Speaker 7: kid in Edmonton, Alberta, you know, back in the eighties
- 27:35Speaker 7: or early nineties. And I was like, yeah, that's actually
- 27:38Speaker 7: a good point. I would have been a complete idiot,
- 27:40Speaker 7: you know, had my good friend and teammate came out
- 27:44Speaker 7: back in the day, you know, so so uneducated, just
- 27:46Speaker 7: you know, kind of clueless right with with how to
- 27:48Speaker 7: deal with stuff like that. So that was pretty early
- 27:50Speaker 7: in my career when when I crossed paths with him,
- 27:53Speaker 7: and kind of from that day, I was like Oh
- 27:54Speaker 7: my god. This is was kind of a wake up
- 27:56Speaker 7: call for me about you know, not wanting you know,
- 28:00Speaker 7: kind of the next generation to be as dumb as
- 28:02Speaker 7: I was, you know, as a kid. And so that's
- 28:04Speaker 7: been really rewarding, like that side of hockey of seeing
- 28:09Speaker 7: you know, it's not perfect for sure, but like the
- 28:11Speaker 7: the advancement of just maturity and you know, people being
- 28:18Speaker 7: good people. I think, you know, like I said, and
- 28:22Speaker 7: not everybody is, but like you guys have seen the
- 28:24Speaker 7: rooms change and you've seen the hockey world change. And
- 28:27Speaker 7: I know when I came in my first year was
- 28:29Speaker 7: ninety nine with the Penguins, and it was an older group,
- 28:32Speaker 7: incredible hockey players, but it was like very much old
- 28:34Speaker 7: school hockey culture, right, And so yeah, I don't know,
- 28:38Speaker 7: it's been rewarding to me just to see how how
- 28:42Speaker 7: much better it's gotten. And I guess better is subjective,
- 28:44Speaker 7: but it's better in my eyes.
- 28:46Speaker 5: It's amazing. Andrew, I mean what you're doing giving back
- 28:49Speaker 5: and you know, like being being a good teammate and
- 28:52Speaker 5: you were always known as a good teammate and speaking
- 28:54Speaker 5: of guys like that, you know, you go back to
- 28:57Speaker 5: you know, we crossed pass in Boston, and you know
- 29:00Speaker 5: when Zidano came in, there was a presence about it.
- 29:04Speaker 5: And I know how close you guys were over you
- 29:06Speaker 5: over your course of your career and you guys want
- 29:08Speaker 5: to cup together and play against each other and junior
- 29:10Speaker 5: and stuff. What was it about Z that you know
- 29:14Speaker 5: right away he had this presence or maybe there was
- 29:18Speaker 5: a memory about him where you were just like, this
- 29:21Speaker 5: guy's different.
- 29:23Speaker 7: Well, yeah, he was. He was totally different, right, I mean,
- 29:26Speaker 7: like it's a psychopath. Well like in junior, it was crazy,
- 29:30Speaker 7: right because he did. He came to Prince George and
- 29:32Speaker 7: so you go up to Prince George. It's a tough
- 29:34Speaker 7: enough place to play, and then you got this giant
- 29:36Speaker 7: on the other side and it's like, ohly crap. So
- 29:38Speaker 7: he's so intimidating, right, just from a pure one perspective.
- 29:42Speaker 7: But then he stuck around in the off season and
- 29:44Speaker 7: we shared the same agent, so he worked out in Edmonton,
- 29:48Speaker 7: you know, before he before he went to the NHL,
- 29:50Speaker 7: and uh so I got to see him in the
- 29:52Speaker 7: gym and you know, doing all that kind of stuff.
- 29:54Speaker 7: But just as a person, and you know, you guys
- 29:56Speaker 7: know Z and he is he's like a lot of
- 29:59Speaker 7: the tough guys in our league, right that are so intimidating.
- 30:02Speaker 7: They're like the nicest guys and like super soft often
- 30:04Speaker 7: like they get out all the you know, stuff on
- 30:07Speaker 7: the ice and now and then off the ice are
- 30:09Speaker 7: just these incredible people. So he's just one of those guys.
- 30:11Speaker 7: And the thing about him, I guess is he's he's
- 30:16Speaker 7: tough to kind of describe quickly, and I guess that's
- 30:20Speaker 7: probably the ultimate compliment. And you know, he's complicated. He's
- 30:23Speaker 7: from a leadership perspective, like in the room. I think
- 30:25Speaker 7: one of his best traits was that he really he
- 30:29Speaker 7: was a good manager, Like he knew how to manage
- 30:31Speaker 7: other people and give ownership to other players and not
- 30:35Speaker 7: just try to be the guy.
- 30:37Speaker 2: You know, he didn't.
- 30:38Speaker 7: He was smart enough to know that he couldn't do
- 30:40Speaker 7: it all and so bringing guys in, giving guys roles,
- 30:43Speaker 7: giving guys responsibilities. He was he was great at running
- 30:47Speaker 7: a meeting, you know, talk about boards and some adult
- 30:51Speaker 7: stuff that we usually don't do. Like he was running
- 30:53Speaker 7: like real meetings like in the locker room, about making
- 30:56Speaker 7: sure guys knew, you know, what he needed from them
- 30:58Speaker 7: and what he expected and what they were good at
- 31:00Speaker 7: and and so his communication skills were excellent, but he
- 31:03Speaker 7: was very to the point, you know, the Eastern European
- 31:05Speaker 7: and I guess was very straightforward. There's not a whole
- 31:08Speaker 7: lot of black and art, not a whole lot of
- 31:10Speaker 7: gray area. Was very black and white about about all that.
- 31:13Speaker 7: So I think, yeah, that distributed leadership style that he had,
- 31:16Speaker 7: and then the communications skills that he had were incredible.
- 31:20Speaker 7: But then the person that he was, right, he he
- 31:23Speaker 7: was off like getting his real estate license and he
- 31:26Speaker 7: was doing his financial planning a certificate and what I
- 31:29Speaker 7: don't even know if I'm probably not even saying it right.
- 31:31Speaker 7: He's speaking like eight languages and like on an off
- 31:35Speaker 7: day would be like, hey, would you do in your
- 31:37Speaker 7: off day? I'm like, got later round it was awesome
- 31:38Speaker 7: and totally relaxed, and he's like, yeah, I went to
- 31:40Speaker 7: an estate sale and I was like putting on stuff
- 31:43Speaker 7: and I was up in the north Shore, like you know,
- 31:45Speaker 7: I was like, like, what are you getting at an
- 31:47Speaker 7: estate sale?
- 31:48Speaker 4: Like what do you do?
- 31:48Speaker 7: He's like, A, It's just interesting, And you know, I say,
- 31:51Speaker 7: he was just one of those guys that was really interesting.
- 31:53Speaker 7: I could always rely him on a on a road trip,
- 31:55Speaker 7: you know, to like go for a walk or check
- 31:58Speaker 7: out a museum or something like that. He's just always
- 32:01Speaker 7: very curious and yeah, like so that yeah, combination of
- 32:05Speaker 7: curiosity and incredible drive and work ethic. Like he's just
- 32:09Speaker 7: a He's a pretty cool dude. He's just fun to know.
- 32:13Speaker 7: He reminds me a lot of Alexei Kovlov, who I
- 32:16Speaker 7: played with in Pittsburgh and was one of my favorite
- 32:19Speaker 7: players that I ever played with, just because of that. Like,
- 32:21Speaker 7: obviously he was super skilled, an incredible hockey player, but
- 32:25Speaker 7: that dude would be dressed so quick, like after a
- 32:27Speaker 7: game or practice, like he had his clothes like clothes on, showered,
- 32:31Speaker 7: like done. He would be like zipping on, where's this
- 32:33Speaker 7: guy going? And he was going because he was getting
- 32:35Speaker 7: his palot's license at the time, so he was really
- 32:38Speaker 7: flying planes. Did ever in helicopters. The best story ever
- 32:43Speaker 7: was like because the first years I was gritting sent
- 32:45Speaker 7: down to Wilkes Bar. He's like, Andy, I got you,
- 32:48Speaker 7: I fly you, No, I need hours, and I'm like, perfect,
- 32:51Speaker 7: I don't want to drive across Pennsylvania And so Alexi
- 32:54Speaker 7: covileve it would fly me to the miners to Wilkes
- 32:57Speaker 7: Bar in this stupid little plane that's like a four seater,
- 33:00Speaker 7: but he needed his hours.
- 33:01Speaker 4: How many times did he do it?
- 33:03Speaker 7: A couple?
- 33:04Speaker 4: All that.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Fly to the minor.
- 33:07Speaker 7: It just sick guys like that, you know, like there's
- 33:10Speaker 7: pretty cool dudes that like have more going on, you know,
- 33:14Speaker 7: other than just playing hockey. And that's that's also something
- 33:17Speaker 7: that I think I'm proud of, is I think like
- 33:19Speaker 7: I tried to do a lot more outside of the
- 33:21Speaker 7: game and tried to instill that in younger, younger guys,
- 33:24Speaker 7: and and not from like a hey, get ready for
- 33:26Speaker 7: life after hockey. It's going to end like that kind
- 33:28Speaker 7: of fear based thing, but more from like, no, trust me,
- 33:31Speaker 7: it's going to help you in hockey because you got
- 33:33Speaker 7: more stuff going on in your life and like your
- 33:35Speaker 7: emotional roller coaster of like oh my god, we're winning,
- 33:38Speaker 7: we're losing, I'm not scoring. I am scoring, Like you know,
- 33:41Speaker 7: guys that only had hockey and only had friends in
- 33:44Speaker 7: hockey and only cared about hockey, like I know this
- 33:47Speaker 7: is hockey podcast, but still.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Like you know, it's good.
- 33:50Speaker 4: No, it's good for guy.
- 33:50Speaker 7: It's a balance, right, It's what you will make you
- 33:53Speaker 7: a better player.
- 33:54Speaker 4: Yeah, it's what you do, not who you are. And
- 33:56Speaker 4: you see guys that end up having kids that are like, wow,
- 33:59Speaker 4: I did, I didn't. I found another level to my game,
- 34:01Speaker 4: and it's like because your mind's detached from the game totally.
- 34:05Speaker 1: You mentioned the Penguins team Andrew and Alexei Kovalev under
- 34:09Speaker 1: yvonn Helenka Hire's the head coach.
- 34:11Speaker 3: I wuldn't know how good his English was.
- 34:13Speaker 1: You also at least to half a dozen check players,
- 34:15Speaker 1: including their start yard mar Yoger.
- 34:17Speaker 4: What was you like playing with the yohugar dude?
- 34:19Speaker 7: That's that whole Pittsburgh era was insane. I was like,
- 34:24Speaker 7: I was a Pittsburgh fan because Paul Coffee got traded
- 34:26Speaker 7: there from Edmonton. So like I was grew up in
- 34:28Speaker 7: Edmonton obviously an Oilers fan, and then Paul Coffee fan
- 34:31Speaker 7: because my dad's like, black guy can skate better than anybody,
- 34:33Speaker 7: so watch him. And then yeah, I became a Pittsburgh fan.
- 34:38Speaker 7: They were obviously easy to cheer four with those teams,
- 34:40Speaker 7: so like, I gotta look, I gotta look at the
- 34:43Speaker 7: year of the picture. But I was asking and I
- 34:45Speaker 7: got h Pittsburgh Penguin's jersey for Christmas, like as a kid,
- 34:48Speaker 7: like coming down so excited, you know, Christmas morning. And
- 34:52Speaker 7: then yeah, within a few years like lemuse my owner
- 34:56Speaker 7: slash teammate the Yauger's and there Covid lev Straka like
- 35:00Speaker 7: it was crazy, and then yeah, like the Helenka days.
- 35:03Speaker 7: I remember me and Ian Moran looking at each other
- 35:06Speaker 7: across the room and we're like, we are the only
- 35:09Speaker 7: two English speaking guys in this whole room. There's two,
- 35:12Speaker 7: like two that's it. Was it, that was it, And
- 35:15Speaker 7: and Ivan he Linka was our head coach. We went
- 35:18Speaker 7: to the conference finals. We lost the jersey because you
- 35:20Speaker 7: can only get fifteen shots on birder at the time,
- 35:23Speaker 7: which was a little difficult, and but we went far.
- 35:28Speaker 7: We had zero system, like no system. We had lines
- 35:31Speaker 7: of five, right, so you always played with the same
- 35:34Speaker 7: five guys, so we knew each other well, which I loved.
- 35:36Speaker 7: I thought that system was really cool. But I remember
- 35:40Speaker 7: like running the guys that we play against, they're like, yeah,
- 35:42Speaker 7: we tried to do video on you and we just
- 35:43Speaker 7: stopped because like this there's no I'm like, yeah, it's
- 35:47Speaker 7: pretty accurate. Like we just kind of played shinny and
- 35:50Speaker 7: and but we were so good, right and then Ivan
- 35:53Speaker 7: Linka like our coach, our head coach in NHL didn't
- 35:56Speaker 7: speak English like zero like or actually I sent you'ld
- 36:00Speaker 7: come in and go let's go guys and then walk out.
- 36:08Speaker 3: The media any of that stuff.
- 36:10Speaker 4: No, nothing, there's no media back then.
- 36:13Speaker 2: So the assistants were busy.
- 36:15Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, but you just wrote the lines like
- 36:19Speaker 7: we didn't like we we didn't really have a system.
- 36:22Speaker 7: We ran practice like you do the drills.
- 36:24Speaker 3: You just kind of like do it.
- 36:26Speaker 2: But like.
- 36:29Speaker 7: It was let's go boys. That was our system.
- 36:32Speaker 4: Yeah, let's go boy. I mean, you never hear the
- 36:36Speaker 4: five guy set up lines like you know, the group
- 36:40Speaker 4: of five going out anymore.
- 36:42Speaker 5: It's it's impressive because you played in different eras and
- 36:47Speaker 5: being a smaller defenseman the way you played, like you know,
- 36:50Speaker 5: you go back to your Calgary days pre pre full
- 36:53Speaker 5: lockout and then post and you know you were a
- 36:57Speaker 5: guy that's hard to play against. And going back to Calgary,
- 37:01Speaker 5: you know, you guys are in the finals. You know,
- 37:04Speaker 5: game goes all the way to Game seven playing against Tampa.
- 37:07Speaker 5: You know, talk about that series and what you know,
- 37:09Speaker 5: what you learned and maybe.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Did it go in or not?
- 37:14Speaker 5: You know there's always that too that's talk about. But
- 37:17Speaker 5: you know maybe something you took from that that helped
- 37:21Speaker 5: you in twenty eleven with Boston.
- 37:23Speaker 7: Oh well, I mean all of it helps, that's for sure.
- 37:27Speaker 7: I mean whether it went in or not, who knows,
- 37:30Speaker 7: Like it's like it actually it went in. The only
- 37:33Speaker 7: thing that doesn't bother me is because I won now,
- 37:35Speaker 7: like because we won with Boston. But like man, I was,
- 37:40Speaker 7: I was mad about that and not just about the goal,
- 37:42Speaker 7: just about losing, like and it's not really about like
- 37:45Speaker 7: whether win in or not. It's just like when you
- 37:47Speaker 7: lose a cup, like like it sits with you for
- 37:51Speaker 7: until you win I guess, or if you don't, probably forever.
- 37:54Speaker 7: But calgarys were awesome. I think that Darryl Setter was
- 38:01Speaker 7: and most guys I think that play for him will
- 38:03Speaker 7: tell you like he was hard to play for, but
- 38:06Speaker 7: like probably the best thing that can happen for your career,
- 38:08Speaker 7: especially when you're young, because he holds you accountable, like
- 38:11Speaker 7: every shift, like your very first shift of the game
- 38:14Speaker 7: if it's not dynamite, like you're sitting on the bench
- 38:18Speaker 7: and so you're ready for every game. It would be
- 38:21Speaker 7: game forty seven in the middle of the season, and
- 38:24Speaker 7: he would come into the room like it was game seven,
- 38:27Speaker 7: and it was great. It was really really good to like,
- 38:31Speaker 7: you know, go from something in Pittsburgh that was a
- 38:35Speaker 7: little bit more loose, you know, and you're just playing
- 38:37Speaker 7: to something that was like strict and hard and like
- 38:40Speaker 7: demanding of like you need to be a professional to
- 38:43Speaker 7: stay in this league. Yeah, so probably the length of
- 38:46Speaker 7: my career was probably due to him and just the
- 38:49Speaker 7: accountability that he demanded. That team was great. You know,
- 38:53Speaker 7: we're kind of underdogs. I'm glad we had Mika kippersof
- 38:56Speaker 7: who probably got us to the finals. You know, he
- 38:59Speaker 7: kept us in games that we had no business being in.
- 39:02Speaker 7: But it was just a tough ass team that was
- 39:04Speaker 7: willing to kind of do anything, you know, and fight
- 39:07Speaker 7: and go to war for each other. And that culture
- 39:12Speaker 7: of like I guess all in kind of together is
- 39:16Speaker 7: what you know, we tried to create in Boston, right
- 39:18Speaker 7: of like kind of no questions asked, Like we're going
- 39:21Speaker 7: to war every night, you know, middle of the season
- 39:24Speaker 7: game is just as important as the playoff run. You know,
- 39:28Speaker 7: if there's a fight, we're all in it kind of thing.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Uh.
- 39:31Speaker 7: And then ultimately I think like the base, the base
- 39:34Speaker 7: foundation of what we're trying to build in Boston was
- 39:37Speaker 7: like we got to send these people home proud, Like
- 39:39Speaker 7: you know, the garden was half full, even not half,
- 39:42Speaker 7: but you know, like when I got traded there, like
- 39:45Speaker 7: they had missed the playoffs and there was empty seats
- 39:47Speaker 7: all over the place, right all the other teams were win.
- 39:51Speaker 7: There's no bruin stuff around you know, town like jerseys
- 39:54Speaker 7: and hats and stuff like that, and like that like stings.
- 39:56Speaker 7: You know, you're like shit, like this is the original six,
- 39:59Speaker 7: Like you know, it's almost embarrassing, you know, And ultimately,
- 40:04Speaker 7: like you got to look in the mirror and you
- 40:06Speaker 7: can either complain about it or whine about it or
- 40:09Speaker 7: do something about it. And I think we had a
- 40:10Speaker 7: group of people in Boston it's like, oh no, we're
- 40:12Speaker 7: gonna do something about it, especially when you have char
- 40:15Speaker 7: and stuff like that. So I think that mantra of
- 40:18Speaker 7: like let's make these people proud, you know, even if
- 40:20Speaker 7: we don't make the playoffs. But like if we're playing
- 40:23Speaker 7: the Montreal Canadians tonight, like if they beat us, like
- 40:27Speaker 7: these fans are getting a show like there's gonna be
- 40:30Speaker 7: fights or something like something's happening, right, and so win
- 40:33Speaker 7: or lose, like at least they're walking out of here
- 40:35Speaker 7: like yeah, that's that's Bruin's hockey. And so I think
- 40:39Speaker 7: having that, you know, really kind of strong identity and
- 40:41Speaker 7: not like some stupid motto that goes on a shirt
- 40:46Speaker 7: or on a billboard up in the dressing room but
- 40:48Speaker 7: nobody really cares about. And it's kind of like coach driven,
- 40:51Speaker 7: but the players don't really create it. Like the stuff
- 40:54Speaker 7: in Boston was like it meant something and the players
- 40:57Speaker 7: created it, and it was like, yeah, I guess people
- 41:01Speaker 7: wrap their arms around the culture, right, because like I said,
- 41:04Speaker 7: you can come up with some some inspirational saying and
- 41:09Speaker 7: it might as well be one of those like posters
- 41:11Speaker 7: with believe like an eagle flying on it with like
- 41:14Speaker 7: some dumb quote under that nobody reads, right, And that's
- 41:17Speaker 7: why I think some that's the difference between like a
- 41:19Speaker 7: good locker room and ones that are just kind of like, hey,
- 41:23Speaker 7: I'm here, I'm here to play and you know, here
- 41:26Speaker 7: for myself whatever it is. But yeah, that group was
- 41:28Speaker 7: was in the battle for each other and really believed
- 41:31Speaker 7: in what we were building.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you were trade of that Bruins team just a
- 41:35Speaker 1: few months after they sign charm Marks of Arden. As
- 41:38Speaker 1: you said, you were able to turn things around after
- 41:39Speaker 1: the team had been disillusioned. Your last NHL season, Oilers
- 41:43Speaker 1: welcomed Connor McDavid. How long did it take you to
- 41:45Speaker 1: realize this kid was the real deal?
- 41:47Speaker 7: Well, we're hurt at the same well, I mean right away,
- 41:50Speaker 7: first first ice session, but he he was injured.
- 41:54Speaker 2: I was injured, and I.
- 41:55Speaker 7: Remember just like some of those like on ice sessions,
- 42:00Speaker 7: and I mean the kid was so fast right Like
- 42:03Speaker 7: you'd go to defend him and he'd be thirty feet
- 42:05Speaker 7: away from you in like a heartbeat, and I'm like,
- 42:07Speaker 7: oh my god, I'm so old.
- 42:09Speaker 4: Wait you wait, you had to do rehab skates with
- 42:11Speaker 4: co Yeah, it's terrible. Oh my god, I jump off
- 42:18Speaker 4: the bridge.
- 42:19Speaker 2: It was terrible.
- 42:20Speaker 7: So it was like pretty yeah, I was like, all right,
- 42:22Speaker 7: this is it so but but I mean yeah, I
- 42:29Speaker 7: mean the kid was so dialed right like he was.
- 42:32Speaker 7: I mean he still is, like I think, I don't know,
- 42:36Speaker 7: it's not too hard to tell how much he cares
- 42:38Speaker 7: about hockey and how seriously he takes it. So yeah,
- 42:43Speaker 7: I think that he Uh, I still can't figure out exactly,
- 42:49Speaker 7: you know, what he does like that makes him the
- 42:51Speaker 7: way he is, He's so fast and he just the
- 42:53Speaker 7: way his hands work. I'm like, I swear this guy's
- 42:56Speaker 7: it's got to be his brain, like must work at
- 42:58Speaker 7: a different speed than mine. That's got to be it
- 43:02Speaker 7: because it because yeah, like I don't know how how
- 43:04Speaker 7: you like how you study him and make sense of
- 43:08Speaker 7: just how much better he was than everybody else when
- 43:11Speaker 7: he when he came in.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Well, I gotta make sense of something. My last question is,
- 43:15Speaker 4: you know I kind of read something about you kidnapping
- 43:17Speaker 4: Edmonton's some prospects before the rookie camp. I don't know
- 43:21Speaker 4: if that's a best I got to hear that story,
- 43:24Speaker 4: and can you just take us through it?
- 43:26Speaker 2: Yeah? That was fun?
- 43:27Speaker 7: That was actually good. So part of the culture thing,
- 43:29Speaker 7: right is like talk about culture like Edmonton needed that,
- 43:32Speaker 7: like all right, like we you need something to like
- 43:35Speaker 7: rally around and like who are we like what are
- 43:37Speaker 7: we doing here? Like this is like a storied franchise,
- 43:40Speaker 7: So we're going through I was a captain at the
- 43:44Speaker 7: time and coach coach during the summer. You know, they
- 43:47Speaker 7: have like the rookie camps now in the middle of
- 43:49Speaker 7: the summer. So I never had that playing but but
- 43:52Speaker 7: obviously as a veteran, they give me a call the
- 43:55Speaker 7: like we're having this rookie camp. It's out in Jasper,
- 43:58Speaker 7: you know, out in the mountains and Alberta. You know,
- 44:01Speaker 7: here's our schedule. We'd love for you to, you know,
- 44:03Speaker 7: your captain, you come talk to the guys. And I
- 44:06Speaker 7: was like, wow, that sounds thrilling, like you know, like
- 44:12Speaker 7: go and talk at like the keg or something, you know,
- 44:14Speaker 7: like over staate, like like I don't know, like I
- 44:18Speaker 7: And I told him, I'm like, look like I don't know, like,
- 44:20Speaker 7: but I can understand myself as a rookie would just
- 44:24Speaker 7: be like kind of roll in my eyes, like listen
- 44:26Speaker 7: to this old guy talk. And also it's just not
- 44:29Speaker 7: something that I really wanted to do. And so I said, like,
- 44:32Speaker 7: I'm more than happy to do something, but like, will
- 44:34Speaker 7: you give me some freedom to like have a little
- 44:36Speaker 7: fun with it, like and and I think I could
- 44:39Speaker 7: give you guys some insight, you know, I have ideas
- 44:41Speaker 7: about like what makes a good player, what doesn't the
- 44:44Speaker 7: guys I've seen, you know, go on to have good careers,
- 44:47Speaker 7: like things that stand.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Out like this and that.
- 44:49Speaker 7: It was like, let me be part of the process,
- 44:50Speaker 7: Like this is a prospect camp. You guys are trying
- 44:52Speaker 7: to identify like your next group of leaders. You're you know,
- 44:56Speaker 7: the guys that are going to make this team and
- 44:57Speaker 7: build you're gonna build around. And it was a good group, right,
- 45:01Speaker 7: Like we had dry sitle there and Nurse and that
- 45:04Speaker 7: whole crop of guys. And so I so like, yeah, great,
- 45:08Speaker 7: you know, like go plan something. We'll give you the
- 45:10Speaker 7: night and you can do whatever you want. So I
- 45:12Speaker 7: called up my army ranger buddy from Boston, Lucas Uh,
- 45:16Speaker 7: Lucas Carr, who's a great friend, and and Uh and
- 45:19Speaker 7: then a couple of guys from the regiment up in Edmonton.
- 45:21Speaker 7: So I had these three military guys and I was like,
- 45:24Speaker 7: here's what I want you guys to do. I want
- 45:27Speaker 7: to like, we want to build up a night where
- 45:29Speaker 7: we take these guys out and like give them like
- 45:32Speaker 7: kind of a view into your world and give them
- 45:34Speaker 7: a little perspective on like what hard work is, you know,
- 45:37Speaker 7: what kind of toughness is, YadA YadA, And they're like great,
- 45:40Speaker 7: And so then over the course of like probably a month,
- 45:42Speaker 7: like we're scheming and coming up with this whole plan,
- 45:45Speaker 7: and and essentially what it boiled down to was us
- 45:47Speaker 7: showing up in like a couple of vans and like
- 45:50Speaker 7: these these guys are throwing like these homemade like like
- 45:54Speaker 7: water bombs. They like make water bottles and they put
- 45:57Speaker 7: like the heat packs in them, and like they blow up.
- 45:59Speaker 7: So it's kind of like shock and awe, like at
- 46:02Speaker 7: their hotel picking up these rookies and these like army
- 46:04Speaker 7: guys like grabbing them throw them in the van, like
- 46:06Speaker 7: let's go, let's go, let's go. And the guys are like, well,
- 46:09Speaker 7: what are we doing? I thought we're going to the keg.
- 46:13Speaker 7: And anyways, like we kind of took them out to
- 46:16Speaker 7: this field in the mountains. It's beautiful, like by a river,
- 46:20Speaker 7: and then like the guys took them through all these
- 46:23Speaker 7: kind of like drills of practices. All right, you're on
- 46:25Speaker 7: this team. You're on this team, Like we need to evac,
- 46:28Speaker 7: we need to do some whatever they call it. I
- 46:30Speaker 7: don't know military terms, but they did like a couple
- 46:32Speaker 7: hours of these like drills and practices and like let's
- 46:35Speaker 7: go and YadA YadA and then we ended the night
- 46:39Speaker 7: with like around a campfire eating like MREs. Have you
- 46:42Speaker 7: ever eaten an mre? Like, oh yeah, like an army meal.
- 46:46Speaker 7: They're tear so bad. And then we all slept in
- 46:48Speaker 7: sleeping bags under the stars like no, no tense nothing.
- 46:53Speaker 7: So anyways, that's like what we did. But it was
- 46:56Speaker 7: like the context of like all the stuff in between, right, so,
- 46:58Speaker 7: as we're eating the MREs, it was like chicken in Tabasco.
- 47:02Speaker 7: The guys are telling us about like our my my
- 47:04Speaker 7: buddy Lucas was taking us about like being stuck in
- 47:07Speaker 7: Afghanistan for two months on the side of a mountain
- 47:10Speaker 7: with his sniper team and all they had for like
- 47:12Speaker 7: the entire time was chicken and Tabasco sauce every single meal,
- 47:16Speaker 7: like for two months. And so I was like, guys,
- 47:19Speaker 7: like listen up, Like I guarantee you you'll be so
- 47:22Speaker 7: excited to be in the NHL and then you'll find
- 47:25Speaker 7: you know, at some point you'll be complaining about the
- 47:28Speaker 7: salmon being too dry at the four seasons. Yeah, and
- 47:32Speaker 7: f you you know, if you ever get to that point,
- 47:34Speaker 7: you know, like so never lose perspective. Yeah yeah. So
- 47:36Speaker 7: I was like on my soapbox around that kind of
- 47:38Speaker 7: stuff of just like it's such a privilege to play
- 47:41Speaker 7: in this league. But the other side of it was
- 47:43Speaker 7: I wanted the guys to identify, you know, the guys
- 47:46Speaker 7: that like kind of leaned into the whole practice and
- 47:49Speaker 7: like of doing the stuff and like who who kind
- 47:51Speaker 7: of rose to the top and was like, Yeah, let's go,
- 47:53Speaker 7: let's go Kwon guys and rally the troops for something
- 47:56Speaker 7: admittedly so dumb to do during the rookie camp, but
- 47:59Speaker 7: just throw people curveballs, right, because like what is the league?
- 48:03Speaker 7: Like you're constantly getting throwing curveballs and like adjusting and
- 48:06Speaker 7: like how do you deal with just like stuff like
- 48:09Speaker 7: and and not things not going your way? And so
- 48:12Speaker 7: I had the guys identify like, hey, this guy stood out,
- 48:15Speaker 7: This guy stood out. This guy all he did was
- 48:17Speaker 7: bitch and moan the whole time, YadA, YadA, And so
- 48:20Speaker 7: like you start identifying like characters and personalities of like
- 48:23Speaker 7: who's the whiners, you know, who's complaining the whole time,
- 48:26Speaker 7: who's just like going through the motions, and then who's like, yeah,
- 48:29Speaker 7: let's go, sweet, let's go, and like and they were
- 48:32Speaker 7: like they picked out back then it was like, man,
- 48:35Speaker 7: this guy dry Settle like incredible and like Nurse was awesome,
- 48:38Speaker 7: And so it's pretty neat to see like how the
- 48:41Speaker 7: Army dudes it, you know, like they know hockey, but
- 48:44Speaker 7: it's not like they're scouts or anything like that. And
- 48:45Speaker 7: they were picking off like the guys that who eventually
- 48:48Speaker 7: have turned out like obviously great careers. But I just
- 48:51Speaker 7: thought it was like an interesting insight like into because
- 48:54Speaker 7: you know, you guys played long enough, like you see
- 48:56Speaker 7: who does make it right? And of course like you
- 48:58Speaker 7: have to be good, but it's more like you know,
- 49:01Speaker 7: the mental stuff and like the guys that get it
- 49:03Speaker 7: and the guys that are like the first in line
- 49:07Speaker 7: for practice and like kind of the nerds right, like
- 49:10Speaker 7: the ones who are like trying harder than like you know,
- 49:14Speaker 7: when you do like conditioning skates, it's like who's trying
- 49:17Speaker 7: and who's like who's slotown? You're making us look bad,
- 49:19Speaker 7: Like that's the dude that has like a two year
- 49:21Speaker 7: career maybe if he even makes it right. So like
- 49:24Speaker 7: I was trying to instill those things and the guys
- 49:26Speaker 7: are like I would love nothing more than for you
- 49:28Speaker 7: guys to all have like long careers but like skill
- 49:31Speaker 7: will get you a couple of years, and like the attitude,
- 49:33Speaker 7: like the way you approach the game in life, like
- 49:35Speaker 7: that's what will get you the fifteen year career, right,
- 49:38Speaker 7: and and so like yeah, I think it's like a
- 49:41Speaker 7: little bit of that like that that I love that
- 49:43Speaker 7: side of the game and that side of like development,
- 49:45Speaker 7: and like yeah, it beats like like I said, giving
- 49:48Speaker 7: like a chit chat over dinner, you know.
- 49:52Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, like terrific career, obviously a great storyteller
- 49:56Speaker 1: and doing a great step in the league.
- 49:57Speaker 3: Thanks so much for this man. We really appreciate.
- 49:59Speaker 2: This was awesome.
- 49:59Speaker 7: It was good to see you again.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, all right, good stuff there from Andrew Ferrence.
- 50:12Speaker 1: We'll get to send a file and sixty in just
- 50:13Speaker 1: a second. But the American era of hockey dominance continues.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Tosa beating can on the final clam Paralympic gold for
- 50:19Speaker 1: the fifth straight time also marks the first time that
- 50:22Speaker 1: one country has swept gold and Olympic men and women's
- 50:26Speaker 1: hockey and the Paralympics.
- 50:27Speaker 3: It's America's game, and that's why Nate Thompson is here
- 50:29Speaker 3: to boast. Go ahead, mate, stage is yours, America. You
- 50:32Speaker 3: stolen our game. You stole our women. Go ahead, congratulations.
- 50:36Speaker 5: I don't know about that, but I'm not I'm not
- 50:38Speaker 5: here to boast, but I mean, triple gold for the
- 50:41Speaker 5: United States is a big deal, and it's a big
- 50:43Speaker 5: deal for hockey. I think it's great, you know, at
- 50:47Speaker 5: the end of the day, because we're trying to grow
- 50:49Speaker 5: the game, and you know, you look in here. You know,
- 50:52Speaker 5: I've heard stuff about you know, them being there being
- 50:54Speaker 5: over one hundred thousand sign ups in USA hockey after
- 50:57Speaker 5: the Olympics and in different places all over the US
- 51:00Speaker 5: that you wouldn't expect hockey to be in.
- 51:02Speaker 2: So this is only a positive, even if we swept
- 51:08Speaker 2: the whole thing. It's it's uh, it's it's nice to
- 51:11Speaker 2: see all.
- 51:12Speaker 4: Listen. Venezuela's got baseball, so you got you got their president,
- 51:19Speaker 4: but we shr game all time. J uh.
- 51:26Speaker 1: The other part of it is for Canada j D.
- 51:28Speaker 1: The response to this new era of US hockey dominance
- 51:31Speaker 1: is that Doug Armstrong is out Saint Louis Blues GM
- 51:34Speaker 1: and held a position with Hockey Canada. I didn't wize
- 51:36Speaker 1: you've been this long. Twenty sixteen World Cup. More moves
- 51:39Speaker 1: coming for team Canada. Right, this is we're gonna move
- 51:41Speaker 1: this up around now.
- 51:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I heard some people talking would be interesting about
- 51:45Speaker 4: if they bring in a non NHL GM to kind
- 51:48Speaker 4: of run it full time so there's no bias on players.
- 51:52Speaker 4: But again, when you lose by one goal in a
- 51:54Speaker 4: three on three in a skills competition and men's and women's, yeah,
- 51:59Speaker 4: you know, Paralympic I think it was more of a
- 52:00Speaker 4: runaway where they they dusted them up at the Paralympic
- 52:05Speaker 4: Games in the seeded rivalry. But I just think it'd
- 52:08Speaker 4: be nice to see, Hey, Doug Armstrong has done a
- 52:11Speaker 4: great job. But I just think it's you know, it's
- 52:13Speaker 4: time i'd like to see. Maybe you're seeing a lot
- 52:16Speaker 4: more Chris Pronger around you. You've been talking with him
- 52:19Speaker 4: at Amazon. You're starting to see him talk about his
- 52:22Speaker 4: book a little bit a lot and about his he's
- 52:24Speaker 4: on Amazon. He's vying for a GM job, and that
- 52:27Speaker 4: could be one that he goes in as a kind
- 52:30Speaker 4: of a friend mentor not mentor, but mentee of Doug Armstrong.
- 52:37Speaker 3: I just thought was.
- 52:37Speaker 1: Interesting to turn a phrase that the Paralympic team was
- 52:39Speaker 1: a real runaway. But it's one way of putting it. Yes,
- 52:45Speaker 1: I stepped into that one. But yes, prongs is definitely
- 52:47Speaker 1: excited about his book. I already pre ordered it, very
- 52:49Speaker 1: excited about that. It's gonna be go on to April fourteenth,
- 52:51Speaker 1: and he's as you know j D and Nate. One
- 52:53Speaker 1: thing about Chris Pronger is you're aware when he's there.
- 52:56Speaker 1: Like everything about him is big. He's a big guy.
- 52:58Speaker 1: He's got big opinion, he's got a big laugh, he's outspoken.
- 53:01Speaker 1: He'll let you know if he thinks that you're wrong,
- 53:03Speaker 1: like he's If you want a guy who's taken no guf,
- 53:06Speaker 1: that's Chris Pronger. So I am with you that he's
- 53:08Speaker 1: absolutely a guy that is again a massive presence within
- 53:11Speaker 1: hockey Canada.
- 53:12Speaker 3: He was a Hall of Fame defenseman. He's clearly eager
- 53:14Speaker 3: to do things. He's working with the Amazon, he's doing
- 53:15Speaker 3: some stuff.
- 53:16Speaker 4: With Oh, he's getting he's yeah, he's out here. He's
- 53:18Speaker 4: getting a gym job in the next two years.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Yeah, And he's fascinating. You're right, with money in the
- 53:23Speaker 1: cap and stuff. He goes deep in the weeds and
- 53:25Speaker 1: that stuff.
- 53:25Speaker 3: So I'm with you, all right.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Newfoundland Junior Hockey Brawl that's right. The Saint John's Junior
- 53:30Speaker 1: Hockey League game on March seventh, the Saint John's Junior
- 53:33Speaker 1: Caps and Southern Shore Junior Breakers three brawls and five
- 53:37Speaker 1: hundred and seventy two pellion minutes game three of a
- 53:40Speaker 1: quarterfinals series between the teams.
- 53:41Speaker 3: The game was called in the third period of all.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Four goalies were tossed for fighting, twelve players and coaches,
- 53:47Speaker 1: and the Breakers received suspension. Six Caps players got susceed
- 53:51Speaker 1: three the four goalies among those suspended. JAD, is there
- 53:54Speaker 1: a craziest brawl you've been involved in? My favorite part
- 53:56Speaker 1: of this By the way, the game was called because
- 53:58Speaker 1: all the goalies were gone.
- 53:59Speaker 3: We can't play. Nobody else can play goalie.
- 54:01Speaker 2: That's it.
- 54:02Speaker 4: That's hilarious for me. Ah, I don't know. In Saint
- 54:06Speaker 4: John's new foldly, you never know what can happen on
- 54:07Speaker 4: the rock there.
- 54:08Speaker 2: That's right. That's right. That's where I met JD for
- 54:11Speaker 2: the first time.
- 54:12Speaker 4: Yeah, Island, we have first hand knowledge there. You could
- 54:16Speaker 4: lose your mind there, that's for sure. About a day
- 54:18Speaker 4: and a half so Island fever. Ah, biggest brawl I had.
- 54:21Speaker 4: I was in junior with Victoriaville Tigers and we were
- 54:25Speaker 4: in shawingy Yan playing rack Nice and there was just
- 54:29Speaker 4: that well it first started, I think when our coach
- 54:33Speaker 4: was like all mad at us that he that you know,
- 54:38Speaker 4: we weren't playing good enough. So we ended up going
- 54:40Speaker 4: out on the ice without him and he like didn't
- 54:42Speaker 4: even come on the bench, and then we ended up
- 54:44Speaker 4: having a brawl. It was a big five. It was
- 54:46Speaker 4: a big five on five brawl after five and five brawl,
- 54:49Speaker 4: just like the old junior days, and it's just it's
- 54:51Speaker 4: just one of those things that happens a little bit
- 54:53Speaker 4: of testosteroe and it's kind of fun. Everybody gets into
- 54:55Speaker 4: it and all the guys are cheering in the locker
- 54:59Speaker 4: room after because it's just if you you feel bad
- 55:01Speaker 4: if you're the one that doesn't fight. Nate.
- 55:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I have one, and that's from my very ever
- 55:08Speaker 5: first WHL junior game and I was playing for Seattle
- 55:11Speaker 5: against Portland and there was two line brawls my first game,
- 55:16Speaker 5: first ever game, and two line brawls and there's like
- 55:20Speaker 5: four guys left in our bench. I ended up having
- 55:22Speaker 5: I think I was still sixteen at the time. I
- 55:24Speaker 5: had two goals that game, my first game, but definitely
- 55:27Speaker 5: didn't fight in my first game, which is I mean,
- 55:29Speaker 5: you look back on it now and you're like, how
- 55:31Speaker 5: did you not end up fighting that game?
- 55:32Speaker 2: Mate? But yeah, it was.
- 55:35Speaker 4: You're saving it for later.
- 55:37Speaker 7: I was.
- 55:37Speaker 2: I was still a skilled guy at that point, so
- 55:39Speaker 2: I wasn't. Wasn't. It didn't my other phase yet.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Yeah, they didn't. They didn't beat all your hopes and
- 55:44Speaker 4: dreams out of it. Not yet here, hang on.
- 55:49Speaker 3: From fighting to flowers.
- 55:51Speaker 1: We gonna get some flowers to Andre Copena on the
- 55:53Speaker 1: road this week in the final month of his final
- 55:55Speaker 1: NHL season, Islanders, Devils and Rangers players all stayed on
- 55:58Speaker 1: the ice after.
- 55:59Speaker 3: The games to shake hands with the King's captain.
- 56:01Speaker 1: His two goals started I guess New Jersey gave him
- 56:04Speaker 1: one thousand, three hundred and eight points, passing Marcel Dion
- 56:08Speaker 1: for the franchise record, with John had held for more.
- 56:09Speaker 3: Than forty five years.
- 56:11Speaker 1: He also owns the franchise mark for games assists, game
- 56:15Speaker 1: winning goals. Captain Cope Nate unbelievable run with the.
- 56:18Speaker 5: Kings so well deserved exactly. Let's get some clicks for him,
- 56:21Speaker 5: because yeah, he is just an all time human, great person.
- 56:26Speaker 5: He deserved all the accolades and guys shaking his hands
- 56:30Speaker 5: after games. And you know, there's been so many great players,
- 56:33Speaker 5: obviously Gretzky and Curry and all these guys that have
- 56:36Speaker 5: played for the Kings, but I don't think that there
- 56:38Speaker 5: is he. He is the best King for me all time.
- 56:42Speaker 5: He is the number one King, and he's shown it
- 56:46Speaker 5: on the ice, off the ice throughout his whole career,
- 56:48Speaker 5: winning cups, Selkies. I mean, just the way he plays, consistency, everything.
- 56:52Speaker 5: I mean, We've talked about on j Copitar a lot,
- 56:55Speaker 5: but he's just he deserves it. He deserves all the
- 56:57Speaker 5: accolades because of not just the player is, but the
- 57:00Speaker 5: person he is and the way he presents himself more
- 57:03Speaker 5: than gretz I love that. Fuck you Gritz, I like it.
- 57:10Speaker 4: Well, that's that's Nate's and your flowers. I got to
- 57:14Speaker 4: give a quick flowers to Cold Coffield before you punch
- 57:18Speaker 4: off Cold Coffield that game winning goal yesterday's fortieth. But
- 57:24Speaker 4: I read a crazy stat goals when the game is
- 57:28Speaker 4: tied in the NHL icles at fifteen, Gunther's at seventeen,
- 57:33Speaker 4: cole coff Is at twenty four. He is clutch Field,
- 57:38Speaker 4: if that makes sense, I didn't. I don't think that
- 57:39Speaker 4: were clutch Coffield. There you go, here's my fires clutch Field.
- 57:44Speaker 4: That doesn't really work.
- 57:45Speaker 1: Give flowers Clotchfield, all right, before Nate has to hop
- 57:48Speaker 1: in a car here via Pegasus A quick centiphile and
- 57:51Speaker 1: sixty in the Oscars recap, I thought con O'Brian was fantastic.
- 57:54Speaker 1: Maybe some predictable jokes in the monolog but Ai and
- 57:57Speaker 1: Ted sarandos and Netflix, but a great shot. Shall may
- 57:59Speaker 1: knew that was coming two minutes in Ballet and the Opera, Timmy,
- 58:02Speaker 1: it was coming. Look great in the suit Kyleie General
- 58:03Speaker 1: looked fantast so even if he doesn't win the Oscar,
- 58:05Speaker 1: he's still winning it, like not.
- 58:08Speaker 3: His best joke also was about British people.
- 58:10Speaker 1: He'sid a rare example where British no British actress or
- 58:13Speaker 1: actresses nominated, but the Brits in their.
- 58:15Speaker 3: Cutry they arrest their pedophiles. Excellent. Linemack code him there.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Later on had a very good video in which he
- 58:20Speaker 1: talked about how now they're trying to make movies because
- 58:22Speaker 1: everyone just watched it on their phone. So if you
- 58:24Speaker 1: watch The Godfather Part two, it would be oh, bit
- 58:27Speaker 1: one one because they're just trying to shorten everything, making
- 58:29Speaker 1: long be sure. And then a great Scorsese cameo tell
- 58:31Speaker 1: them Marty sent It was great as far as the
- 58:33Speaker 1: winners themselves. I went twenty to twenty four on my picks,
- 58:35Speaker 1: which is my second best ever. I once was twenty one.
- 58:38Speaker 1: The good news is I did well. The bad news
- 58:40Speaker 1: is JD. That means it was chocked. There wasn't many surprises.
- 58:42Speaker 3: Paul Thomas Anderson wins as I expected for Director and picture.
- 58:45Speaker 3: Tal was impressed. I had Michael B.
- 58:46Speaker 1: Jordan winning for actor, but not a ton of surprises overall.
- 58:49Speaker 1: From the ceremony, the one big talk was this the
- 58:51Speaker 1: obits because we lost a lot of people, so certain
- 58:54Speaker 1: people got a little more love. Rob Ryer had Billy
- 58:57Speaker 1: Crystal come out to a wonderful presentation to him. Barbara Streisen,
- 59:00Speaker 1: who did one movie with Robert Redford, came out there
- 59:02Speaker 1: and sang a little bit. Jane Fonda calling out Babs
- 59:05Speaker 1: because you're kidding like you're the person for sitting ready
- 59:07Speaker 1: to one movie the guy, and I was upset. Robert
- 59:09Speaker 1: deavall of my favorite actors. Daval got ten seconds. You
- 59:12Speaker 1: should have had Billy Bob Thornon out there. Billy Bob
- 59:13Speaker 1: could have talked about Robert Deaval for ten minutes, could
- 59:15Speaker 1: have talked about Secondhand Lions, Nate's favorite of all movie.
- 59:18Speaker 3: Either way, the Oscars a successful event. Ratings were up.
- 59:21Speaker 3: People seem happy.
- 59:22Speaker 2: JD.
- 59:22Speaker 3: I know you're upset about one thing though.
- 59:24Speaker 1: Sinners is strong showing years, so now people will look
- 59:27Speaker 1: back and go Sinners sixteen nominations Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor,
- 59:31Speaker 1: and Jason Newris is gonna go eh.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Not for me.
- 59:35Speaker 4: I just think, oh man, yeah, this will give me
- 59:39Speaker 4: in trouble. So I'm not going into this one this
- 59:41Speaker 4: much because more with my theories. But yeah, I listen,
- 59:44Speaker 4: I liked it. I watched it again too, just to
- 59:47Speaker 4: really be like, okay, okay, I went back and I
- 59:50Speaker 4: looked at it and again. If you were to put
- 59:53Speaker 4: Michael B. Jordan his two characters next to each other,
- 59:56Speaker 4: and if you couldn't see the screen, you would not
- 59:59Speaker 4: be able to pick them apart other than a gold
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: a gold tooth difference or the difference in suits, so
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: to tell me. And I know he's playing twins, but
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: there's he's supposed to have personality, differences in both he
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: did not show enough of that for me. And I
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: just have to say, like the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio,
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: like he was incredible as a drugged out old conspiracy
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: theorist for the French seventy five people at Revolution. He
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: was so good, and I and somebody somebody wrote an
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: article being like his level is always so high that
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: I feel like everything's become comfortable with it. Ye were
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: like in a world of like, I believe like he
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: should be at close to Daniel de Lewis numbers nice,
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: like I think he should be at two or three
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: tickling three. So I don't know. I just think he was.
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: And then you look at Timothy Shallomey. I just think
