- 0:00Speaker 1: A Christmas carol for eighteen sixty two. The skies are pale,
- 0:07Speaker 1: the trees are stiff, the earth is dull and old.
- 0:13Speaker 1: The frost is glittering, as if the very sun were cold,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and hunger fell is joined with frost to make men
- 0:23Speaker 1: thin and wan. Come Babe from heaven, or we are lost,
- 0:30Speaker 1: Be born, O child of man. The children cry, the
- 0:35Speaker 1: women shake, The strong men stare about. They sleep when
- 0:40Speaker 1: they should be awake. They wake ere night is out,
- 0:46Speaker 1: for they have lost their heritage. No sweat is on
- 0:50Speaker 1: their brow. Come Babe and bring them work and wage.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Be burn and save us. Now cross the sea thors
- 1:02Speaker 1: on the fierce debate. The women weep and hate, And
- 1:08Speaker 1: in the right be which that may suppose. The strife
- 1:12Speaker 1: is long. Come, son of Man, Thy righteous way and
- 1:18Speaker 1: right will have no wrong. Good Men speak lies against
- 1:23Speaker 1: thine own sorrow, quick and hearing slow. They will not
- 1:29Speaker 1: let thee walk alone, and think to serve thee. So
- 1:34Speaker 1: if they the children's freedom saw in thee the children's king,
- 1:41Speaker 1: they would be still with holy awe, or only speak
- 1:46Speaker 1: to sing. Some neither lie nor starve, nor fight, nor
- 1:52Speaker 1: yet the poor deny, but in their hearts all is
- 1:57Speaker 1: not right. They often sit and sigh. We need THEE
- 2:03Speaker 1: every day and hour. Control, and in snow, child King,
- 2:09Speaker 1: we pray with all our power disparate and save us.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So we are but men and women. Lord thou art
- 2:20Speaker 1: a gracious child. Oh fill our hearts and heap our board.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Pray thee. The winter's wild, the sky is sad, the
- 2:31Speaker 1: trees are bare. Hunger and hate about come child, and
- 2:38Speaker 1: ill deeds and ill fair Ashton will soon be driven
- 2:42Speaker 1: out
