- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good early morning from the garage and I'm
- 0:32standing in here and I'm looking at all my little vegetables that
- 0:36are getting ready to, you know, be outside very soon.
- 0:39And one of the requirements of them moving outside very soon is
- 0:43that we have all of the fencing properly situated.
- 0:47We live where there is everything that wants to eat
- 0:49everything. Everything wants to eat the
- 0:51chickens, everything wants to eat the veggies and I understand
- 0:54that. So it's not a question of doing
- 0:58anything except acting into what we know we need to do, which is
- 1:01fence off because we refuse to use poisons and all of that.
- 1:04The the entire farm is organic and I just will not do anything
- 1:08that's going to harm anything like that because of the organic
- 1:12nature of it. Now, fencing wise, what's
- 1:14interesting about that is that we have, you know, a big desire
- 1:19to keep out lots of things, chickens being one of them from
- 1:24it. And we had to spend the weekend
- 1:26really working on getting fencing done.
- 1:28Because if we don't have the fencing done, we have a really
- 1:31big issue. The the chickens go in
- 1:34everywhere and they dig everything up.
- 1:37So this weekend was about making sure that the flower garden had
- 1:42a brand new welded wire fence around it, as well as we had to
- 1:47take the fence that was around the bigger garden, which is,
- 1:51believe it or not, it's a wired fence, solar powered shock fence
- 1:56that goes up 87 feet, 8 feet tall.
- 1:59The wires go up that tall so that the deer can't jump over
- 2:02them because the deer, I've seen them leap right over the fence
- 2:06when it was lower. So we have now raised it.
- 2:09We have make sure it's solar powered shock fence and then to
- 2:14top it all off on the outside of that fence so that my chickens
- 2:17don't get shocked, I have to put another lower fence of welded
- 2:22wire around it so that it's safe and no one gets shocked.
- 2:25So it's quite the endeavor. And then you have to go and take
- 2:30all of these weeds these, I call them the devil weeds.
- 2:33I don't know what their technical name is, but I think
- 2:36it's a, it's some sort of a Japanese vine that's invasive.
- 2:39And I don't know how it was ever brought here, but it was and it
- 2:43thrives here and it just spreads like crazy.
- 2:45So I spend a ton of time on my hands and knees pulling these
- 2:49out because if you don't get the root out, guess what?
- 2:52It spreads. Now point of all of this
- 2:55information is think about I was, as I'm working on all of
- 2:59this, I'm going, Oh my gosh, I've spent so much time this
- 3:01weekend working on things that I'm getting rid of things.
- 3:06Put the weeds, I'm setting the area up.
- 3:09Yes, I'm by pulling all the weeds out, but I then have to
- 3:12put the fence up. I then have to do all this and
- 3:14it's all to protect and keep things away from stuff.
- 3:18I want the vines away from the plants.
- 3:20I want the deer away from the plants.
- 3:22I want the chickens away from the plants.
- 3:24There's so much time spent in setting everything up so it can
- 3:29properly win. Now this is the fourth year, the
- 3:324th garden I've had at this farm.
- 3:34And I will tell you I have I've never put this much effort into
- 3:39keeping things orderly. Now I am extremely orderly.
- 3:42And if you ever saw pictures of my gardens before, you'd say, Oh
- 3:45well, wait, these are these are in order.
- 3:48But every year I learn more about how to do this better here
- 3:53and how to be more productive with it.
- 3:55And that is a huge part of the process.
- 3:58But I made a distinction over the winter looking through my
- 4:01notes from the previous years. And one of the things that I
- 4:05recognized in, in my excitement of trying to get things growing
- 4:10and trying all these different vegetables, I wasn't spending
- 4:14enough time cleaning up the things that caused problems.
- 4:18And it really struck me how much that was true.
- 4:23I just was so excited to get things in the ground.
- 4:26I wasn't dealing with the weeds. I wasn't dealing with the
- 4:29animals, the issues. I wasn't dealing with the proper
- 4:33setup to get myself to win. And it got me very focused on
- 4:37the fact that we do this everywhere in our lives, too.
- 4:41We don't take the time to set stuff up the right way because
- 4:45we're excited and we rush in and having that experience and
- 4:50recognizing it in the plants. I was talking to my son about it
- 4:53while he was working on his motorcycle project.
- 4:56He rebuilt, he's rebuilding a motorcycle to which he has
- 4:59successfully ripped it apart and rebuilt it.
- 5:01But then he was noticing that, oh, his back Fender fell off
- 5:06while he was riding. He heard a rattle and it fell
- 5:07off. And then I was telling him the
- 5:09story last night about this and said, you know, I spent, so I
- 5:13had to spend so much more time setting myself up to make it
- 5:15better that I, I can stress to you, it might be a good idea to
- 5:21go through and tighten up all the bolts.
- 5:23And when he and he was so funny because he said, you know what,
- 5:25you're right. I was just so excited.
- 5:28I was letting that go. So think about in your life,
- 5:31where are the parts of it that you know, you should go back and
- 5:34check because you want the outcome, but you just haven't
- 5:38taken the time to make sure that you're getting that outcome.
- 5:42And it's super important to recognize that because if you
- 5:45can clean up all those little tiny details and make sure
- 5:48you're on point with them, guess what?
- 5:50Everything else has a chance to take that giant leap from, you
- 5:54know, good to great to outstanding and how quickly you
- 5:57can make that little leap from good to great and which is what
- 6:00I was always doing. But hitting great to outstanding
- 6:03is a bigger leap. It's a bigger step across the
- 6:05pond. So give yourself an opportunity.
- 6:08And I'm going to go get myself some more protective gear to
- 6:13stay away from these deadly little weeds.
- 6:15All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 6:18will see you tomorrow. Bye.
