Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: We deserve our summer break
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And you know, the story that's been getting my goat
- 0:01Speaker 1: all this week has been the accusation that New Zealanders
- 0:04Speaker 1: take too long a holiday over the Christmas January period.
- 0:08Speaker 1: And this story just keeps on burbling along. It started
- 0:11Speaker 1: on the weekend. We've got business owners and economists and
- 0:13Speaker 1: Simon Bridges and taught back callers all alleging that the
- 0:16Speaker 1: country closes down for the month and it kills our productivity.
- 0:19Speaker 1: But you know, there's absolutely no proof of that, and
- 0:22Speaker 1: all these allegations seem a little better than reckons. And
- 0:25Speaker 1: let's remember the rest of the Christian world are also
- 0:27Speaker 1: off for Christmas New Year, so we're not losing competitiveness
- 0:30Speaker 1: over that week, I'll we now. And of course, remember
- 0:33Speaker 1: the Northern Hemisphere closes down for August while we're here
- 0:36Speaker 1: working our butts off. Maybe some of the people moaning
- 0:39Speaker 1: about the summer break have lost track of the reality
- 0:41Speaker 1: for most New Zealand workers. For most of us, the
- 0:44Speaker 1: military minimum statuary leave for most New Zealanders is just
- 0:48Speaker 1: four weeks after a year of employment, twenty precious days
- 0:52Speaker 1: that we then have to eke out over twelve months.
- 0:55Speaker 1: There are four big school holiday periods. Parents need to
- 0:57Speaker 1: think about that, need to take a break. For most
- 1:00Speaker 1: New Zealanders, a big summer holiday might last until the
- 1:03Speaker 1: second week of January, and that's it. And the longer
- 1:06Speaker 1: you take over some of the longer you have to
- 1:07Speaker 1: work over the rest of the year. Only a very
- 1:10Speaker 1: few people casually skive off for January, the people who
- 1:13Speaker 1: have successful businesses, who have managers in place, the semi retired,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and all those superstars whose success during the year grants
- 1:19Speaker 1: them privilege and I'm looking at you, Mike Hosking and
- 1:23Speaker 1: the other group of the lawyers. Partly because the courts
- 1:25Speaker 1: closed down now. While judges have nice summer holidays, that
- 1:29Speaker 1: only allowed a weekened spring during the rest of the year,
- 1:32Speaker 1: so the lawyers can't work, so they bugger off to
- 1:34Speaker 1: their beautiful batches. And that's why lawyers were the most
- 1:38Speaker 1: concerned at the dropping of the new resource management system
- 1:42Speaker 1: this week, because there's a six week submission period and
- 1:45Speaker 1: that means the lawyers are going to have to work
- 1:48Speaker 1: all summer like the rest of us, and that's why
- 1:51Speaker 1: they're grumpy. For more from Early edition with Ryan Bridge.
