Latest / QUESTION EVERYTHING / From “No Scrubs” to Real Power: How Kandi Burruss Won by Lifting Others
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: No one has all the answers, but when we ask
- 0:05Speaker 1: the right questions, we get a little closer, closer to truths,
- 0:11Speaker 1: closer to each other, even closer to ourselves. I'm journalist
- 0:16Speaker 1: Danielle Robe, and each week, my guests and I come
- 0:19Speaker 1: together to challenge the status quo and our own ways
- 0:22Speaker 1: of thinking by daring to ask what if, why not?
- 0:28Speaker 1: And who says so? Come curious, dig deep, and join
- 0:33Speaker 1: the conversation. It's time to question everything. If you grew
- 0:40Speaker 1: up anywhere near a radio, you've lived inside Candy Buris's work.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Her pen has scored weddings, breakups, kitchen dances, girls' nights,
- 0:53Speaker 1: car rides with the windows down, the amount of times
- 0:56Speaker 1: I've belted out, don't think I'm not in my car
- 0:59Speaker 1: or my bedroom.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Don't stop.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Most people first saw her in the nineties she popped
- 1:18Speaker 1: off with her high school friends turned global group Escape.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But even then she wasn't just the voice. She was
- 1:24Speaker 1: writing the music, the architect behind the hook. She went
- 1:28Speaker 1: on to write Destiny's Child's Bills, Bill's Bills and Bugaboo Pinks.
- 1:32Speaker 1: There You Go records for in Sync, Aliyah, Casey, and Jojo.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Her music gets sampled by Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran
- 1:39Speaker 1: decades later, Because well, I think culture remembers a hook
- 1:44Speaker 1: that tells the truth. And then there's the version of Candy.
- 1:47Speaker 1: People think they know, the reality star with the very
- 1:50Speaker 1: memorable catchphrases and facial expressions fourteen seasons on the Real
- 1:54Speaker 1: Housewives of Atlanta. And while most people leave reality television louder,
- 1:58Speaker 1: I think Candy left clear. As I was talking to her,
- 2:01Speaker 1: it felt like she almost always had a second set
- 2:04Speaker 1: of hands on her own life. She's been the voice
- 2:07Speaker 1: on the song, the pen behind the hook, the producer
- 2:10Speaker 1: behind the curtain, the business woman structuring the deal. If
- 2:13Speaker 1: she's in a room, she's clocking how it works and
- 2:17Speaker 1: then quietly figuring out how to build her own version
- 2:20Speaker 1: of it. She doesn't just show up in culture, she
- 2:22Speaker 1: builds it, and she lives like tomorrow is already on
- 2:25Speaker 1: the calendar.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Used to bees don't make no honey, So don't nobody
- 2:29Speaker 2: care what you used to.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Be Like, I don't care what you did yesterday.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I don't care what you did ten years ago, five
- 2:35Speaker 2: years ago, or back in the day. I don't care.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Is all about right now.
- 2:40Speaker 3: We're on your next move. While you're in your current moves.
- 2:43Speaker 1: That instinct I think comes from history, personal, industry, family.
- 2:49Speaker 1: You'll hear about it in this conversation. But there's something
- 2:52Speaker 1: else she carries that doesn't show up on a resume.
- 2:54Speaker 1: It's the weight of being the engine, the one people
- 2:57Speaker 1: come to and rely on, the one who doesn't have
- 3:00Speaker 1: to borrow because she built. And she made a promise
- 3:03Speaker 1: early on.
- 3:03Speaker 2: One thing that I always used to brave, from the
- 3:07Speaker 2: time I was younger to even now. It's like, God,
- 3:09Speaker 2: I'll promise it, you give it to me. I promise
- 3:11Speaker 2: I'm gonna share it, whether it's financially or opportunity wise.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I'm always trying to put on everybody in my circle,
- 3:18Speaker 2: me and go. I got it packed, He continues the blessing.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I'm gonna continue to make sure I'm using whatever I
- 3:24Speaker 2: have and whatever avenues I have.
- 3:26Speaker 3: To make sure I'm sharing it amongst.
- 3:28Speaker 2: The people, and of course the people as closest to me.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I want to definitely make sure they're good.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And she has even when it wasn't convenient, even when
- 3:36Speaker 1: generosity cost her. But now she's in a chapter that
- 3:39Speaker 1: she didn't script. She left the franchise that made her
- 3:42Speaker 1: a household name. She's breaking Broadway records as a producer,
- 3:46Speaker 1: deep diving into acting, and reframing her family life while
- 3:49Speaker 1: navigating divorce. She said it plainly, life is lifing. Candy
- 3:54Speaker 1: has had a spotlight on her for so long that
- 3:57Speaker 1: I think so many people see her work ethic or
- 3:59Speaker 1: the time. But you know, I wanted the story underneath that.
- 4:02Speaker 1: What happens when a woman who has spent her entire
- 4:05Speaker 1: life standing on business decides that she wants to return
- 4:08Speaker 1: to the creative space that made her her? Is she
- 4:10Speaker 1: coming home to herself or starting something brand new? And
- 4:14Speaker 1: what does that feel like? And in a season where
- 4:16Speaker 1: everything does feel brand new? Career, love, family, what do
- 4:20Speaker 1: you keep and what do you finally let go of?
- 4:23Speaker 1: It's time to question everything with Candy Burris. Candy, you
- 4:30Speaker 1: are an Atlanta girl, yes, period born and raised. But
- 4:34Speaker 1: you spent a lot of time in my hometown, Chicago.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Well when I'm filming the Shy, well, I'm not filming
- 4:40Speaker 2: this year, but yeah, I was on there for some seasons.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I can't remember how many, but I was there for
- 4:45Speaker 2: a while. How did my city treat you? I love you.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I would say Chicago has the best restaurants.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Thank you very much. Yes, I'm actually surprised you said
- 4:55Speaker 1: that because Atlanta's known for food too.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I think so, but I don't know Chicago's. It seems
- 5:00Speaker 2: like y'all got us beat with the restaurants, and then
- 5:02Speaker 2: y'all have the summer thing, the food thing in the summer.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah, the food fest. I think it's because it's so cold,
- 5:08Speaker 1: there's like not a lot of things to do, so
- 5:10Speaker 1: you just go eat. Yeah, there better be good food.
- 5:13Speaker 1: What does Atlanta do better than Chicago?
- 5:15Speaker 2: Weather? Y'all got a crazy weather out there. To me,
- 5:18Speaker 2: it's like, whoa, your cold is? Like cold Time's ten.
- 5:21Speaker 2: But I would definitely say weather. But I mean, I
- 5:24Speaker 2: do like Chicago. It's a nice city. But we party
- 5:27Speaker 2: better than y'all. I would definitely say that. It's always
- 5:31Speaker 2: an even in Atlanta, like every day, the way you
- 5:33Speaker 2: can have something to do every single day of the
- 5:34Speaker 2: week if you want it to.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Is it hard not to go out like you have
- 5:37Speaker 1: to keep yourself inside?
- 5:39Speaker 2: Well for me, you know, because I always can invite
- 5:43Speaker 2: it to something and I want to support you know, now,
- 5:46Speaker 2: I'm trying not to just be everything.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Well you know that phrase, like she'll go to the
- 5:51Speaker 1: opening of an envelope.
- 5:52Speaker 2: You're not like that. No, I know a lot of people,
- 5:54Speaker 2: so I try to support people. So I try to
- 5:57Speaker 2: show up for people.
- 5:58Speaker 1: That's really sweet. So you walk to from the Real
- 6:01Speaker 1: House of Atlanta three years ago.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Has it been three years already? Yeah? No, I think
- 6:07Speaker 2: it's been.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Too really okay, two years.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I think it's been too because they've only had one
- 6:13Speaker 2: season the air, and they filmed the season, so they're
- 6:15Speaker 2: about the air of that second do their third?
- 6:17Speaker 1: Do you watch?
- 6:18Speaker 2: I was trying to why I've been then I fell
- 6:21Speaker 2: off after like the first couple of episodes of that
- 6:23Speaker 2: of the one season that I hadn't been on. But
- 6:26Speaker 2: I was seeing all the clips online, so I was
- 6:29Speaker 2: keeping up. And then plus, you know, I'm friends with Smia.
- 6:32Speaker 2: She's telling me what happened, and somebody else tell me something.
- 6:35Speaker 2: So I was hearing a little bit here and there,
- 6:37Speaker 2: like I've already heard some things about the season that's
- 6:40Speaker 2: about to come out, and I'm like, ooh, I might
- 6:42Speaker 2: have to tune back again because they got some drama.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I love that you'll still be a part of the
- 6:47Speaker 1: drama even though you're out of it.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I mean Okay, so let'st I'm not trying to be
- 6:51Speaker 2: a part of the drama, even though somehow I was.
- 6:55Speaker 2: They brought me up in the reunion and they were like,
- 6:58Speaker 2: you know, I guess PA was like you kid candy,
- 7:00Speaker 2: everybody kiss geting? Whoa why is that being talked about?
- 7:03Speaker 2: I am not there. Leave me out of it, like seriously,
- 7:07Speaker 2: But I think it's important to continue to support the
- 7:12Speaker 2: franchise even though I'm not there, because I was there
- 7:16Speaker 2: for fourteen seasons. I want them to still be successful,
- 7:19Speaker 2: Like I want Real Housewives of Atlanta to keep going
- 7:22Speaker 2: for another fifteen years.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I think we all do what's your favorite thing to
- 7:27Speaker 1: do now that you don't have millions of eyeballs on
- 7:30Speaker 1: you every single day?
- 7:32Speaker 2: Like just chill with my kids. Got like chilling with
- 7:34Speaker 2: the kids, doing fun stuff, going to like the kids
- 7:39Speaker 2: jumping parks and you know all that type of stuff. Oh.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I love going on the belt Line in Atlanta when
- 7:44Speaker 2: the weather is good. What's up? So y'all don't have
- 7:47Speaker 2: that in Chicago?
- 7:48Speaker 1: No, And I'm going two weeks, so please tell me.
- 7:51Speaker 2: So. The belt Line is like a walking path that
- 7:54Speaker 2: they basically made all around the city. It's super cool
- 7:58Speaker 2: because people always walk and riding bikes. It's like restaurants alongside,
- 8:03Speaker 2: so you like the people watch and talk and just
- 8:06Speaker 2: be out amongst the people. You know, just go to
- 8:09Speaker 2: the beltline and walk and eat, talk, laugh.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Thank you for that. I'm taking my mom for her
- 8:15Speaker 1: birthday in a few weeks. Oh coo, So thank you.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I've always been curious what your final scene was like
- 8:21Speaker 1: on Real Housewives? Do you remember what it was?
- 8:24Speaker 2: I don't even remember.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Did you feel emotional?
- 8:27Speaker 2: No? Well, I mean when I filmed my final scene,
- 8:31Speaker 2: I hadn't decided if that was going to be my
- 8:34Speaker 2: final scene or not.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Oh that kind of helps.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yeah. So basically I knew that my contract was up,
- 8:42Speaker 2: and so that allowed me to have the opportunity to
- 8:45Speaker 2: decide if I was leaving or staying because like normally
- 8:49Speaker 2: every year, because they have more options, they can just
- 8:51Speaker 2: pick up their option and make me have to go
- 8:53Speaker 2: straight back to work. So that particular year, you know,
- 8:58Speaker 2: I knew that my contract was going to be up,
- 9:01Speaker 2: so you know, my team and they were all talking
- 9:05Speaker 2: back and forth, you know, negotiating whether or not I
- 9:09Speaker 2: was gonna leave or if I was gonna stay, and
- 9:12Speaker 2: I was just like I don't know. Me and Todd
- 9:16Speaker 2: actually had been talking about it. I was like, what
- 9:17Speaker 2: if I just don't go back this year? And we
- 9:20Speaker 2: were just like going back and forth in our minds, like, Okay,
- 9:22Speaker 2: what does that look like? You know, if I don't
- 9:24Speaker 2: go back, you know, because obviously that's a cute little
- 9:28Speaker 2: check I'm leaving. How I'm gonna make up for that check? Right?
- 9:31Speaker 2: And you know what else do I plan to do?
- 9:33Speaker 2: And you know, and I was just like I really
- 9:35Speaker 2: wanted to go after more of the dreams that I had.
- 9:39Speaker 2: So I don't know, if you remember my last season
- 9:41Speaker 2: of the show, they were kind of getting mad at
- 9:44Speaker 2: me because I was always gone, well the girls and production,
- 9:50Speaker 2: so the girls felt like it was a fair So
- 9:52Speaker 2: I don't know, if you know, I left that trip early,
- 9:54Speaker 2: so they had a cash trip. That was Portugal, wasn't it.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I think it was. Portugal was when Kenya fell and
- 10:01Speaker 2: hurt herself and I was only there a day and
- 10:04Speaker 2: I had to leave because I had some shows that
- 10:06Speaker 2: I already booked would escape and I was like, it's
- 10:10Speaker 2: not my fault, y'all, put y'all shrip on a day.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I already had a show. I'm not canceling my show,
- 10:15Speaker 2: so I'll come hang out with y'all. And they was like,
- 10:17Speaker 2: you gotta at least come for a day or two.
- 10:19Speaker 2: And I'm like, okay, well I'll come for a day
- 10:21Speaker 2: when I'm flying all the way out there to be
- 10:24Speaker 2: there for a day and turn around and coming back
- 10:26Speaker 2: because I got a show and it was some other
- 10:29Speaker 2: things lest I had filmed with the Shy, I believe,
- 10:32Speaker 2: so I was going a couple of days doing that.
- 10:34Speaker 2: So I was always leaving them and coming back, leaving
- 10:37Speaker 2: them and coming back, and you know, sometimes the girls
- 10:40Speaker 2: felt like it was unfair, you know that I wasn't
- 10:44Speaker 2: obligated in their mind to do everything that everybody else
- 10:48Speaker 2: was doing. So people was having too much to say,
- 10:51Speaker 2: and I get it. But at the same time, it's like,
- 10:55Speaker 2: I know, I have dreams, I have goals, so in fairness,
- 10:58Speaker 2: I'm like, it's not gonna change. So I was like,
- 11:01Speaker 2: I really should just go ahead, and.
- 11:03Speaker 1: You felt it was time to go for it. Yeah,
- 11:05Speaker 1: because you did act a little bit early on. Was
- 11:09Speaker 1: that like the taste it always been on your heart
- 11:11Speaker 1: since then.
- 11:12Speaker 2: It's been on my heart since I was in high school.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I went to perform in art school for drama in
- 11:17Speaker 2: musical theater, and I was in the youth on some
- 11:19Speaker 2: of Atlanta, So it was like a dream since childhood
- 11:23Speaker 2: that I wanted to be an actress.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Can we talk about the performing art school though for
- 11:27Speaker 1: a second, because this is not any performing arts school.
- 11:29Speaker 1: This is like an incubator for ninety stars.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of people don't know that. So that's
- 11:35Speaker 2: where I met my group escaped, myself, Tamika, and Tasha,
- 11:38Speaker 2: we all went there. Outcasts went to school, so they
- 11:42Speaker 2: were at school at the same time.
- 11:44Speaker 1: We were Andre and Big Boy, both of them. Yeah,
- 11:47Speaker 1: and then Tea bos too.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Right, So Tri Cities is actually three rival schools that
- 11:52Speaker 2: they put together to make one school. As they were
- 11:55Speaker 2: building the new building, I guess they had it in
- 11:58Speaker 2: another building and she went there, I guess first, but
- 12:01Speaker 2: before they moved to the new building.
- 12:04Speaker 1: And that's when knowing them in high school, does it
- 12:08Speaker 1: make sense where everybody is now?
- 12:10Speaker 2: Yeah? Well, I didn't know is a little bit older
- 12:13Speaker 2: than me, so I didn't know her when she went,
- 12:16Speaker 2: but I.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Remember when they were still trying to figure out their looks.
- 12:19Speaker 2: So they came to school when they had blonde here
- 12:22Speaker 2: and everybody was like what did they do? But they
- 12:24Speaker 2: were like, you know, trying out things. And also my
- 12:28Speaker 2: friend Kawan Pray, the KP they call him. He's like
- 12:32Speaker 2: a big A and R producer, a Grammy winner as well.
- 12:35Speaker 2: He went there at the same time. He's the one
- 12:37Speaker 2: that like an r usher's album, an art like some
- 12:41Speaker 2: of the best albums that came out from that time.
- 12:45Speaker 3: You know, everybody's making music. He was a part of
- 12:47Speaker 3: those albums.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Keenan from Saturday Night Live, he went to Tri Cities,
- 12:52Speaker 2: Wingo from Jacket Edge, he went to try So he
- 12:54Speaker 2: was my classmate. We got most Talented together and I
- 12:57Speaker 2: actually was the one who took them to Jermaine was
- 13:00Speaker 2: managing them when they first started, So I got them
- 13:02Speaker 2: their deal.
- 13:03Speaker 1: You were managing them.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Yeah, so you were already a start. Well yeah, okay,
- 13:09Speaker 2: So what that happened was when I went to high
- 13:12Speaker 2: school and we got a record deal when I was
- 13:15Speaker 2: in the eleventh grade. So I went into my senior
- 13:17Speaker 2: year with songs on the radio already. Okay, so I
- 13:20Speaker 2: was school. Yeah. So basically in my senior year, I
- 13:24Speaker 2: have pretty much had all my credits, only needed a
- 13:26Speaker 2: couple more credits. So my teachers they worked with me.
- 13:29Speaker 2: So when I was out of town for shows, they
- 13:32Speaker 2: would send my work with me, and then I would
- 13:34Speaker 2: come back to school take the test.
- 13:36Speaker 3: So when I wasn't out of town, I went to
- 13:38Speaker 3: school with everybody else. I was going to school just
- 13:40Speaker 3: like all the regular, everyday kids.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Did you feel regular? I did? And then some of
- 13:45Speaker 2: those teachers made sure I felt regular because some of them,
- 13:48Speaker 2: you know, was kind of trying to be extra hard
- 13:51Speaker 2: because I missed so many Okay, my fitness teachers, she
- 13:55Speaker 2: wanted to make me run myus for every day I
- 13:58Speaker 2: missed school. It was like, okay, you're doing the most,
- 14:02Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. Because I missed the day
- 14:04Speaker 2: we did CPR, I had to get a fireman to
- 14:08Speaker 2: come and do an individual class just so I could
- 14:12Speaker 2: pass the CPR and get that certificate. But it was
- 14:15Speaker 2: just like okay, great. But the main class I needed
- 14:20Speaker 2: was my history class. In like English class, I think
- 14:24Speaker 2: I finished everything else. They wouldn't let me do the
- 14:27Speaker 2: half day, which I was mad about that, so I
- 14:30Speaker 2: just did performing arts in the two classes, and I
- 14:32Speaker 2: think I had one semester of math.
- 14:35Speaker 1: You're a person who is a true multi hyphenant and
- 14:39Speaker 1: why that?
- 14:39Speaker 2: Look what you're about to set me up? What's the question?
- 14:42Speaker 1: Well, I don't know that a lot of people can
- 14:46Speaker 1: actually do that. Well, they say they're multi hyphenants. I
- 14:49Speaker 1: think Tianna Taylor probably does it well, like he's great
- 14:51Speaker 1: at it, But I don't know that I can name
- 14:54Speaker 1: someone off the top of my head. That's like really
- 14:56Speaker 1: doing it. And hearing your stories about high school, even
- 15:00Speaker 1: though you were singing and in a group, you were
- 15:02Speaker 1: thinking about business managing your friends, you were like doing
- 15:06Speaker 1: twelve different things at once.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Well, I started managing them the year after I graduated,
- 15:11Speaker 2: So I started trying to write songs while I was
- 15:13Speaker 2: still in high school. I was in the youth on
- 15:15Speaker 2: Someone of Atlanta while I was in high school. So
- 15:18Speaker 2: it was like a musical theater group with some of
- 15:21Speaker 2: the people I was in the musical theater group. They
- 15:23Speaker 2: also went to Tricity. They went on to be Tony
- 15:25Speaker 2: nominated people as well, Saykan, shout out to you girl.
- 15:29Speaker 2: This was a crazy high school. Yeah. When I look
- 15:32Speaker 2: back at it, and then shout out to Keenan. He
- 15:35Speaker 2: and I were talking about we want to do something
- 15:37Speaker 2: that's inspired by our school, Like I haven't even named
- 15:40Speaker 2: everybody we have producers. Can you do like the new fame.
- 15:45Speaker 2: We'll see, We'll figure it out.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Oh my god, I want your version of fame. Okay,
- 15:49Speaker 1: So you've been an established name in the industry for
- 15:52Speaker 1: so many years, and I have to imagine that switching
- 15:55Speaker 1: gears in your forties is a little daunting or no.
- 15:58Speaker 2: I mean switching gears as far as let me just
- 16:01Speaker 2: say it, because right now I'm in a transformation just
- 16:06Speaker 2: simply because like everything has changed in the last two years.
- 16:10Speaker 2: You know, to stop doing something that you were doing
- 16:12Speaker 2: for fourteen years, that's a major change, you know what
- 16:15Speaker 2: I mean. And then you know, now I'm in the
- 16:18Speaker 2: middle of a divorce. That's an extreme major change. So
- 16:23Speaker 2: it's like right now, yeah, I'm like I'm in a
- 16:26Speaker 2: new phase of life where everything is about to be
- 16:30Speaker 2: brand new?
- 16:31Speaker 1: Are you walking into audition rooms? Like did you have
- 16:33Speaker 1: to audition for a Juliet?
- 16:34Speaker 2: No? I did not have to audition for an Juliet
- 16:37Speaker 2: which was awesome, But yeah, there were conversations between my team.
- 16:42Speaker 2: A lot of times. I send in my auditions for
- 16:45Speaker 2: the you know, films or television shows that I've been
- 16:47Speaker 2: a part. It's like I have to send in my
- 16:49Speaker 2: audition tapes. It's not like back in the day where
- 16:51Speaker 2: you have to go face to face. Like now, because
- 16:54Speaker 2: of what happened during the pandemic, people can send their
- 16:56Speaker 2: tapes in.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Or I do live auditions via zoom.
- 17:00Speaker 1: How does it feel to be auditioning for these people
- 17:03Speaker 1: because in your forties, like you know yourself so well
- 17:06Speaker 1: now it's different than when you're sixteen and trying to
- 17:09Speaker 1: impress somebody.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I still feel like I'm trying to impress and
- 17:14Speaker 2: when I am going for a job. So I think
- 17:17Speaker 2: it's important for us to go into every job like
- 17:20Speaker 2: we're brand new, meaning like with that same grind, with
- 17:23Speaker 2: that same I want this job like back in the
- 17:27Speaker 2: day when we first started. Because I think the problem
- 17:30Speaker 2: with a lot of people is when they have made it,
- 17:33Speaker 2: they start acting like they made it. That's the problem
- 17:36Speaker 2: in how they walk in to show respect, to show
- 17:39Speaker 2: the desire for what they want, all the things. It's
- 17:42Speaker 2: like you think people should just give it to you
- 17:43Speaker 2: because of what you've already done. Nobody cares. I say
- 17:46Speaker 2: this time and time again. My cousin said to me
- 17:51Speaker 2: when I was younger, she said, used to be don't
- 17:54Speaker 2: make no honey, So don't nobody care what you used
- 17:56Speaker 2: to be. Like, I don't care what you did yesterday.
- 18:00Speaker 2: I don't care what you did ten years ago, five
- 18:02Speaker 2: years ago, or back in the day. I don't care.
- 18:05Speaker 2: It's all about right now. So when I come into it,
- 18:08Speaker 2: I'm coming into it with the same respect and grind
- 18:11Speaker 2: of somebody who is brand new to this. All of
- 18:14Speaker 2: the what I've accomplished is great or whatever, but it's
- 18:17Speaker 2: like I'm still trying to accomplish more. I'm still trying
- 18:21Speaker 2: to get to a goal. So you know, I'm still
- 18:25Speaker 2: competing against people who are younger than me, maybe more
- 18:28Speaker 2: talented than me, maybe all the things. But that means
- 18:31Speaker 2: I have.
- 18:32Speaker 3: To want it that much more, I have to work
- 18:34Speaker 3: that much harder.
- 18:36Speaker 1: So yeah, I deeply honor that fire in you because
- 18:40Speaker 1: I can't tell you how many people I've interviewed who
- 18:43Speaker 1: simply feel a different way.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Listen, I know because I'm around those people. It's so funny.
- 18:49Speaker 2: It's like we are in a time where things are
- 18:51Speaker 2: constantly changing, things are constantly different, constantly new. Like listen,
- 18:56Speaker 2: let me tell you, because I was on Reality it
- 18:58Speaker 2: was very hard for me and still is sometimes hard
- 19:01Speaker 2: for me to break into you know, TV and film,
- 19:04Speaker 2: even though growing up I was already doing you know,
- 19:08Speaker 2: performing arts schools, performing ensembles and doing all the things.
- 19:12Speaker 2: But because I started out in reality TV, a lot
- 19:15Speaker 2: of people in film and television looked at me. It
- 19:18Speaker 2: was like, em, she's a reality story, even though before
- 19:22Speaker 2: reality TV I was already a successful artist. Once you
- 19:26Speaker 2: get that stamp on your name, it's like you got
- 19:28Speaker 2: to do so much more to prove that. No, I'm
- 19:31Speaker 2: not just getting it because I'm popular, No, I'm actually
- 19:35Speaker 2: good at this. Like people who were in that lane
- 19:38Speaker 2: already looking.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Like you feel it what I used to not anymore?
- 19:43Speaker 2: What changed? What changed is I started doing the work,
- 19:45Speaker 2: getting the jobs, and you have to respect once a
- 19:49Speaker 2: person does it and does it well, you have to
- 19:52Speaker 2: be like, oh, okay, now you're looking at me different.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Now I'm getting a different invite or different acceptance from
- 20:00Speaker 2: you know, my peers, who I'm glad to say they're
- 20:02Speaker 2: my peers, but before they probably wouldn't have considered themselves right.
- 20:05Speaker 1: What job was the difference maker?
- 20:07Speaker 2: Do you think in TV, film and scripted I would
- 20:11Speaker 2: definitely say The Shy for sure. Okay, it was a
- 20:13Speaker 2: blessing to me to get the opportunity. So let me
- 20:16Speaker 2: tell you Before The Shy, a couple of years before,
- 20:19Speaker 2: there was another show that went on to be a
- 20:21Speaker 2: very popular show. I actually the director, the producer, and
- 20:27Speaker 2: everybody had picked me for a role in the show.
- 20:31Speaker 2: I had auditioned for it. They loved me for the
- 20:34Speaker 2: role and all that. My agent was like, oh you
- 20:36Speaker 2: got it, blah blah blah. I was like, oh wow.
- 20:39Speaker 2: I was like, oh, I'm so excited. And it was
- 20:41Speaker 2: on a big network, right, a respected network. Let me
- 20:45Speaker 2: say that it was a drama series. So I was like,
- 20:48Speaker 2: oh my god. I was so excited.
- 20:49Speaker 3: So I was like, what happens now?
- 20:50Speaker 2: Like I, I was like, oh, you just have to
- 20:52Speaker 2: be approved by the network. But you know, they normally
- 20:54Speaker 2: whatever the director and the producers decide, they normally go with.
- 20:58Speaker 2: So I was like, okay, cool. So I told my friends.
- 21:01Speaker 2: I was excited, and then the day or two, lady
- 21:04Speaker 2: calls me back and says that network didn't approve you.
- 21:08Speaker 2: And I was like, what why? What happened? And he
- 21:12Speaker 2: said they didn't want to look like they were stunt casting.
- 21:16Speaker 1: That hurt.
- 21:17Speaker 2: When I tell you, I was devastated. I damn near
- 21:22Speaker 2: Crid and he was like, no, it's gonna be okay.
- 21:26Speaker 2: He was like, You'll get another one, and in my
- 21:28Speaker 2: mind I was like how, And so I'm watching. When
- 21:32Speaker 2: the show aired, I was like, damn, it was a
- 21:34Speaker 2: good show too, and everybody liked the show. I loved
- 21:36Speaker 2: the show, but I didn't let it get me down.
- 21:39Speaker 2: I kept auditioning, and eventually I auditioned for a different
- 21:42Speaker 2: role on the shot that they wanted me before, but
- 21:45Speaker 2: it called for me to be a recurring, which I
- 21:49Speaker 2: would have had to give. I forgot what they call
- 21:51Speaker 2: it first something to that network, but I couldn't because
- 21:57Speaker 2: my first right refusal. It was something basically like if
- 22:00Speaker 2: that network needs you that whatever other project you on,
- 22:03Speaker 2: they already know that network has the first option whatever
- 22:07Speaker 2: to you or whatever. I wasn't able to give those
- 22:10Speaker 2: rights to that network. So I was like, oh, here
- 22:12Speaker 2: it is again. I'm not gonna be able. But then
- 22:14Speaker 2: they had a different role, which was Roslyn, and they
- 22:17Speaker 2: were like, well, she's not needed on set as often,
- 22:21Speaker 2: like we could use her for this role instead, and
- 22:24Speaker 2: I was like amazing, And it.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Ended up I really loved playing Roslyn.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Rosslyn was adult care, thank you. So it ended up
- 22:32Speaker 2: working out later. But my point is it is a
- 22:36Speaker 2: real thing that ten years ago, being looked at as
- 22:39Speaker 2: a reality star as like a gift and a curse
- 22:41Speaker 2: because yeah, you have like a big fan base or whatever.
- 22:46Speaker 2: But when it comes to certain networks, they don't care
- 22:49Speaker 2: about all that. They just want to be looked at
- 22:52Speaker 2: for great writing, great shows.
- 22:54Speaker 3: They don't want to look like they blew up off
- 22:56Speaker 3: of hype.
- 22:57Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 22:58Speaker 1: Do you feel like reality TV you back at all?
- 23:01Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. It's a gift in a curse
- 23:02Speaker 2: because in that particular situation. Yeah, but I've had so
- 23:07Speaker 2: many opportunities from being a part of the Bravo family.
- 23:12Speaker 2: It expands your fan base in a way. So I
- 23:15Speaker 2: just feel like it may have taken me longer in
- 23:18Speaker 2: this lane, but has opened so many other doors and
- 23:22Speaker 2: other lanes.
- 23:36Speaker 1: What kind of main character energy are you attracted to now?
- 23:40Speaker 1: As far as these roles, like, what are you looking for?
- 23:42Speaker 2: I thought we were talking about in relationship.
- 23:45Speaker 1: We could go there, but I was talking about your actors.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Oh okay, we're talking about Okay, that'd be a real
- 23:51Speaker 2: left turns about main character energy, like what gets you excited?
- 23:56Speaker 2: I love a good drama, you know. I love of
- 24:00Speaker 2: you know, something that takes you out of the box,
- 24:04Speaker 2: you know, and a role that people wouldn't expect from me.
- 24:09Speaker 2: So anytime is like a show and they want somebody
- 24:13Speaker 2: to play somebody who was a reality star. Don't even
- 24:16Speaker 2: call me because I don't want to play a character
- 24:19Speaker 2: that you already know.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Me to be, Like, it's crazy to me that you've
- 24:24Speaker 1: experienced this at all, because I understand the like reality
- 24:27Speaker 1: TV vibe and how networks who want the esteem maybe
- 24:33Speaker 1: wouldn't go there. But to me, you're different, Like I
- 24:37Speaker 1: look at you and I'm like, who would ever count
- 24:39Speaker 1: you out? Like you will never allow anybody to count
- 24:42Speaker 1: you out?
- 24:43Speaker 2: Well, thank you, But I think that's been shown over
- 24:46Speaker 2: time though it's like ten years ago and they may
- 24:49Speaker 2: have still been doubt people who have doubt, you know
- 24:51Speaker 2: what I mean?
- 24:52Speaker 1: Maybe with other people, like I think it's crazy to
- 24:54Speaker 1: count you out.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I think it's crazy too.
- 24:57Speaker 1: I'm glad we're on the same pitch, but.
- 24:59Speaker 2: It is what it is. You know, you're not gonna
- 25:01Speaker 2: get everything you want all the time, and everything isn't
- 25:04Speaker 2: necessarily going to go the way you want.
- 25:06Speaker 1: So you're doing and Juliet Now, which is a Broadway show.
- 25:09Speaker 1: And I heard Denzel one time say that film is
- 25:13Speaker 1: a director's medium and stage is an actors medium. And
- 25:17Speaker 1: in reality, I know it's real, but you still could cut,
- 25:20Speaker 1: you could do something over. When you're on stage, there
- 25:24Speaker 1: is no redo.
- 25:25Speaker 2: No redos. It's live every time, and you got to
- 25:28Speaker 2: bring it every time. Like the audience is a different audience.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Every show needs to feel that same feels that the
- 25:36Speaker 2: first audience feel earlier in the day or that they're
- 25:38Speaker 2: gonna feel that night. You never know who's writing that review,
- 25:42Speaker 2: so you got to bring it every time.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Did you have to get over the reflex to redo?
- 25:47Speaker 2: It's very unclear on the difference because as a kid,
- 25:51Speaker 2: like I said, I was in the youth on Summer
- 25:53Speaker 2: of Atlanta, it's a theater group, you know, so it's like,
- 25:57Speaker 2: I know what it is. It's live, it's time, you
- 26:00Speaker 2: get it. You gotta have it. But then I mean,
- 26:02Speaker 2: I guess it's similar and the same thing. When you
- 26:04Speaker 2: performing as a music artist, you got that live audience, yes,
- 26:08Speaker 2: and you got to bring.
- 26:09Speaker 1: It every time you were used to that touring? Yeah,
- 26:12Speaker 1: can we talk about the multi hyphenet word? Okay, so
- 26:16Speaker 1: I think some lanes people create and some lanes they're
- 26:20Speaker 1: just driving in. You seem like you are creating in
- 26:24Speaker 1: every single lane. You're not really like a passenger along
- 26:27Speaker 1: for the ride. Maybe a little bit on reality TV,
- 26:31Speaker 1: but still you were like kind of a leader. Has
- 26:33Speaker 1: it been more about expanding a singular dream for you
- 26:37Speaker 1: or would you consider yourself an expert in pivoting?
- 26:40Speaker 2: I guess I would be an expert in pivoting. I
- 26:43Speaker 2: think it's not in my mind that I'm trying to pivot.
- 26:48Speaker 2: It's just something that I naturally do. Like my curiosity
- 26:53Speaker 2: gets the best of me every time I tell people
- 26:56Speaker 2: It's like the funny thing is, in every business or
- 27:00Speaker 2: every part of the creative space that I've been in,
- 27:03Speaker 2: I have done the talent and I've done the behind
- 27:06Speaker 2: the scenes. So because I'm always.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Curious to know, Okay, well how do you get to.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Do this and how does that happen? And I like
- 27:15Speaker 2: to have some control in my future. I don't want
- 27:18Speaker 2: to have to be the one that you can cut
- 27:20Speaker 2: and then I'm just stuck, like what am I going
- 27:22Speaker 2: to do. I want to be able to make the
- 27:24Speaker 2: decisions for me. So, for instance, the music, I started
- 27:30Speaker 2: out as the artist, and then I went behind the scenes,
- 27:33Speaker 2: being a writer, producer, all the things, learning how this works.
- 27:37Speaker 2: You know. Same thing with TV. I'm on TV as
- 27:42Speaker 2: you know, reality or whatever, and then I started being
- 27:45Speaker 2: a producer pitching shows, learning how that works. You know.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Then same thing with Broadway. I was on stage, did
- 27:56Speaker 2: Chicago on Broadway, and then I'm like, well, I want
- 28:00Speaker 2: to come back a Broadway. It doesn't have to be
- 28:03Speaker 2: on stage, and I started learning how this works. I'm
- 28:06Speaker 2: still learning, but you know, it's a constant thing for me.
- 28:11Speaker 1: What was being the highest grossing black female producer on
- 28:15Speaker 1: your Bengo card?
- 28:16Speaker 2: No, and I didn't realize I was the highest grossing
- 28:20Speaker 2: Oh okay, well that sounded good. I like that tackle.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I think you should run with that because othellow made
- 28:27Speaker 1: that true.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Oh wow, I guess you're right.
- 28:31Speaker 1: It's a feather in your cap for real.
- 28:33Speaker 2: That's big.
- 28:34Speaker 3: No, you know, when we broke records with Othello, that.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Was like wild, how'd you feel? I felt amazing because
- 28:40Speaker 2: it was after I made the decision to leave Housewives.
- 28:44Speaker 2: It was funny because I felt like, and I hate
- 28:46Speaker 2: to say this out loud, but well, for one, I
- 28:48Speaker 2: saw the rumors that some people were trying to say, like, oh,
- 28:51Speaker 2: they let me go. They did not let me go
- 28:53Speaker 2: show Okay, they definitely was trying to send me another contract.
- 28:58Speaker 2: But with that being said, I think not. I think.
- 29:03Speaker 3: I know there were some people that thought I was
- 29:06Speaker 3: gonna fall off.
- 29:07Speaker 1: But don't count you out.
- 29:09Speaker 2: You should never and always know. I'm working on my
- 29:13Speaker 2: next move while I'm in my current move all the time.
- 29:17Speaker 2: That is my rule of thumb. Work on your next
- 29:20Speaker 2: move while you're in your current move, because in order
- 29:24Speaker 2: to constantly have something going on and have something popping,
- 29:27Speaker 2: you gotta be working on what's happening tomorrow. Because what
- 29:30Speaker 2: you worked on yesterday is what's popping today. What I
- 29:32Speaker 2: did a couple months ago when I was rehearsing back
- 29:35Speaker 2: in November, that's what I'm on stage doing right now. Okay,
- 29:39Speaker 2: So when I come off stage, what's coming next? Well,
- 29:42Speaker 2: I can tell you what's coming next. Joe Turner was
- 29:44Speaker 2: coming on August Wilson. I'm producing on that. That started
- 29:48Speaker 2: March thirtieth. The previews, the rehearsal start next week to
- 29:52Speaker 2: Roger Penson is doing her Broadway debut in the show,
- 29:55Speaker 2: I can tell you what's happening next. You get what
- 29:57Speaker 2: I'm saying. So for me, it's like, I'm not gonna
- 30:01Speaker 2: give you an opportunity to be like, yeah, y'all, I
- 30:06Speaker 2: had that experience in my younger years. Never gonna do
- 30:09Speaker 2: it again. What do you mean? What I mean by
- 30:12Speaker 2: that is when my group, you know, we were all
- 30:15Speaker 2: invested in the group, Like I just thought, Oh, the
- 30:17Speaker 2: group is. You know, we're never gonna break up, you
- 30:20Speaker 2: know what I mean? My group we popped off. Our
- 30:22Speaker 2: first thing was a hy oh, it's all about my
- 30:24Speaker 2: group until when my group started falling apart. We couldn't
- 30:28Speaker 2: get along and we were defeating ourselves. It wasn't that
- 30:31Speaker 2: we never had a flop album, we never had a
- 30:33Speaker 2: flyop song or whatever. We couldn't get along. Therefore, the
- 30:38Speaker 2: group went on hiatus. So I gotta figure out how
- 30:42Speaker 2: I'm gonna pay my bills.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Were you depressed after that?
- 30:45Speaker 3: I was stressed the fuck out at a young age,
- 30:48Speaker 3: mind you.
- 30:49Speaker 2: When I was nineteen, our second album was out and
- 30:53Speaker 2: I had bought my first house and we were on tour.
- 30:58Speaker 2: And I found out one of my group members was
- 30:59Speaker 2: gonna go solo, and we were supposed to be in
- 31:01Speaker 2: the middle of negotiating for our third album, and we
- 31:04Speaker 2: thought we were gonna get this big bonus. Oh, we're
- 31:07Speaker 2: gonna make all this money off this because we had
- 31:10Speaker 2: two hit albums. Now I'm like, oh, it's tipping them
- 31:12Speaker 2: to pay us big this time. And then is confusion
- 31:17Speaker 2: going in and gave the label reasons not to give
- 31:19Speaker 2: us the money that we thought we were gonna get.
- 31:21Speaker 2: And here I am like, I just bought this house.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Now I got a bill, and I didn't have anybody
- 31:27Speaker 2: that could afford to pay my bills.
- 31:29Speaker 1: You were paying other people's bills.
- 31:31Speaker 2: My point is, you nineteen years old? How am I
- 31:35Speaker 2: gonna continue to afford this lifestyle? My group is not
- 31:38Speaker 2: gonna be doing another album, or we are doing one,
- 31:41Speaker 2: but this is gonna be the last one for a while,
- 31:42Speaker 2: So what am I gonna do? So it put me
- 31:46Speaker 2: in panic mode, and then that's when I was like, oh, yeah,
- 31:49Speaker 2: we gotta come up with another project, it's something and
- 31:51Speaker 2: start writing songs. And that's how the no scrubs situation
- 31:54Speaker 2: came about. I was telling Tiny I'm like, yo, tiny,
- 31:56Speaker 2: we need to try to get another project. Maybe we
- 31:59Speaker 2: can do another album out. The group is about to
- 32:01Speaker 2: break up or whatever and so, and in doing so,
- 32:04Speaker 2: we wrote these songs for ourselves. And No Scrubs was
- 32:07Speaker 2: one of the songs we did for ourselves, and it
- 32:08Speaker 2: got placed on somebody else and they opened up their
- 32:10Speaker 2: door for me to write all these other artists. That's crazy.
- 32:13Speaker 2: That's how it happened. It came from stress, yeah, trying
- 32:18Speaker 2: to figure my life out in another way.
- 32:21Speaker 1: But that song is the gift that keeps on giving.
- 32:23Speaker 2: It definitely is the gift that keeps on giving in
- 32:25Speaker 2: so many ways. Can you imagine if you were in
- 32:28Speaker 2: a hit group, right, you got songs on the radio.
- 32:31Speaker 2: I turned on the radio here, and then I turned
- 32:34Speaker 2: on radio. Then my song is playing on both stations.
- 32:37Speaker 2: As a youngster, we took those things for granted. And
- 32:41Speaker 2: I used to be like, oh, it's on again. That's
- 32:44Speaker 2: how we took it for granted. But then when the
- 32:47Speaker 2: group broke up and those songs weren't really playing that
- 32:50Speaker 2: much no more on the radio, and I'm not really
- 32:52Speaker 2: hearing us no more, and it's oh damn, like they
- 32:55Speaker 2: ain't really playing us you know, they ain't not really
- 32:57Speaker 2: checking for us right now. That feeling to have had
- 33:01Speaker 2: it and lose it is worse than.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Never having had it at all.
- 33:05Speaker 1: You've had a taste, yes.
- 33:08Speaker 2: The taste of the money, taste of you know, the popularity,
- 33:12Speaker 2: the status, the opportunity, and then that's falling apart. That's
- 33:16Speaker 2: not a good feeling, you know what I mean. And
- 33:19Speaker 2: you're at an age where you like trying to figure
- 33:21Speaker 2: out life. Anyway, we were breaking up when I was
- 33:23Speaker 2: twenty one, so twenty one like what am I gonna do?
- 33:28Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. Once the third album came out,
- 33:30Speaker 2: I knew we was on a hiatus, so it's.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Like, come on, right. Was it hard for you though?
- 33:35Speaker 1: When you were writing for all these artists and you
- 33:38Speaker 1: had been on all these amazing stages.
- 33:41Speaker 2: That part was a blessing. So what I'm saying is
- 33:45Speaker 2: before the song started getting placed on the other artists,
- 33:48Speaker 2: that was when I was trying to figure out what
- 33:50Speaker 2: am I going to do? But once the song got placed,
- 33:53Speaker 2: and that was like a light at the end of
- 33:56Speaker 2: the time, then I got another opportunity to write for
- 33:58Speaker 2: this person, and then this person, this person, and so
- 34:01Speaker 2: then That showed me a whole other thing. One you
- 34:05Speaker 2: don't have to be the person on stage to make
- 34:07Speaker 2: all the money. I made more money as a songwriter
- 34:09Speaker 2: than I did with three platinum albums with my group,
- 34:13Speaker 2: you know what I mean. So that was one lesson.
- 34:17Speaker 2: The other one well, for me, being in a group
- 34:19Speaker 2: helped me to be a team player. I'm okay with
- 34:23Speaker 2: you shining because this song I wrote, this song, You
- 34:26Speaker 2: and the out there pushing the song, we all went it.
- 34:30Speaker 2: So it didn't matter to me if I was the
- 34:32Speaker 2: one on the stage doing it or if I was
- 34:34Speaker 2: the one behind the scenes. As long as you know.
- 34:37Speaker 3: I'm still a part of something great, you know what
- 34:40Speaker 3: I mean.
- 34:40Speaker 2: And I started getting respect from my peers in a
- 34:44Speaker 2: way that'sn't just being in the group, which taught me
- 34:48Speaker 2: another lesson, Like okay, So in the group, we were
- 34:52Speaker 2: important to deff Regors. We was important to Columbia because
- 34:55Speaker 2: we are directly signed them and we helped make money
- 34:57Speaker 2: for them. But all those other labels, when we would
- 35:01Speaker 2: see them at the music Division saying the care it's like,
- 35:02Speaker 2: oh hey, girls from Escape whatever. But after I started
- 35:06Speaker 2: writing songs from all those people, and I showed up
- 35:08Speaker 2: at music industry events. It was like all of a sudden,
- 35:12Speaker 2: presidents of n R from this label, that label, or
- 35:15Speaker 2: the president of this label, and people that I didn't
- 35:18Speaker 2: even think knew who I was.
- 35:20Speaker 3: I would saying, it's like, Chandy, what's up.
- 35:24Speaker 2: How you've been We need to get you know how?
- 35:26Speaker 2: You come over and get with our group. Oh you
- 35:29Speaker 2: know me? Then I started saying, you know what, the
- 35:32Speaker 2: president of all these companies want me to come to
- 35:36Speaker 2: their house. I like it better over here. That's such
- 35:39Speaker 2: a good lesson, is a lesson in power. If you
- 35:42Speaker 2: are the one that can make hits for everybody, you're
- 35:45Speaker 2: important to everybody. If you can make the hit.
- 35:48Speaker 3: Just for yourself, you know, you important to your fans.
- 35:51Speaker 2: And the people that's directly that you're making money for.
- 35:54Speaker 1: It's the golden rule.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Yeah, the rule lessons. I was like, yeah, I need
- 35:59Speaker 2: to know how to make things happen behind the scenes,
- 36:02Speaker 2: because now you know, I'm a resource to everybody.
- 36:05Speaker 1: You've taken that and you've ran with it. You have restaurants,
- 36:09Speaker 1: you have adult toys, you have candy coated beauty, you
- 36:13Speaker 1: have a production company, you still write music, you're on Broadway,
- 36:17Speaker 1: you're producing shows. Tell me about a time that you
- 36:20Speaker 1: wanted to sit and not stand on business because you
- 36:24Speaker 1: are standing all of the time right now. Really, I'm
- 36:28Speaker 1: surprised to hear that.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Yeah, right now, Like having all those different businesses has
- 36:34Speaker 2: been a stressful situation. Man. You know, now I'm getting divorced.
- 36:38Speaker 2: It's kind of like doing things together is and we're
- 36:41Speaker 2: not on the same page, you know. I just want
- 36:44Speaker 2: to go back to my creative space. Oh.
- 36:47Speaker 1: I like hearing that, you know.
- 36:48Speaker 2: I want to be creative. I want to stay a
- 36:50Speaker 2: part of my creative projects, and especially I'm coming up
- 36:55Speaker 2: on my big birthday. I don't want to be stressed.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I want to enjoy life to the fullest. Yes, I
- 37:01Speaker 2: want to enjoy the perks and the money that I've made,
- 37:05Speaker 2: and I want to create more things that bring me joy.
- 37:09Speaker 1: And that has to do with your creativity, because that's
- 37:12Speaker 1: who you are. Yes, that's really cool. How do you
- 37:28Speaker 1: feel when people sample your songs?
- 37:30Speaker 3: Because I love it.
- 37:32Speaker 2: This is a rumor.
- 37:32Speaker 1: I have no proof, but like on the internet or
- 37:35Speaker 1: in life, like Lauren Hill is notorious for being mad
- 37:38Speaker 1: at Drake for nice for what for sampling?
- 37:40Speaker 2: I don't want to stay a why Because I'm sure
- 37:42Speaker 2: she got somebody publishing off this song.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Right, I think she made all the money. I don't
- 37:46Speaker 1: know that Drake made very much money off that song.
- 37:50Speaker 1: So does it feel like when Arianna and Ed Sheeran
- 37:54Speaker 1: are sampling No Scrubs, It's like, Wow, my work has
- 37:57Speaker 1: stood the test of time.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Yes, especially when they send you the clearance. Well, okay,
- 38:02Speaker 2: so if they send you a copy of the song
- 38:06Speaker 2: or whatever before they put it out, then you get
- 38:08Speaker 2: to negotiate what percentage of the song you want. If
- 38:11Speaker 2: they put the song out without getting your clearance, which
- 38:18Speaker 2: I don't know if that's what happened in her situation,
- 38:21Speaker 2: then a lot of times those writers of the original
- 38:23Speaker 2: song will take all the publishing. Interesting, I didn't know that.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Have you ever said no to somebody?
- 38:29Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 38:30Speaker 2: Actually I have said no to somebody, But I don't
- 38:32Speaker 2: think this song ever came out. But I had a
- 38:34Speaker 2: situation years ago where they didn't ask for permission first,
- 38:38Speaker 2: and we ended up with I don't know if you remember.
- 38:39Speaker 2: Back in the day it was No Scrubs and it
- 38:42Speaker 2: was No Pigeons. Yes, No Pigeons went number one two,
- 38:46Speaker 2: But we got all the money from it because they
- 38:49Speaker 2: didn't clear it before they put it out. They used
- 38:53Speaker 2: all of our melody, they used the same concept, the
- 38:56Speaker 2: same lyric. I mean, if they would have got permission before,
- 38:59Speaker 2: they would have been able to get at least a
- 39:01Speaker 2: little bit of the publisher. But they didn't ask.
- 39:04Speaker 1: I don't think they thought that was going to become
- 39:06Speaker 1: the hit that it did.
- 39:07Speaker 2: I don't know if anybody thought that, but it did. Yeah,
- 39:11Speaker 2: I'm thankful it gave me another number one and another check.
- 39:15Speaker 2: It was good.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Well, what makes a song timeless to you?
- 39:18Speaker 2: I personally feel like great hook and something that really relates,
- 39:25Speaker 2: Like if people can really relate to it and it's
- 39:27Speaker 2: like their theme for a part of their life.
- 39:30Speaker 1: I mean, I guess that's what no scrubs did, right,
- 39:32Speaker 1: Like men are continually scrubs.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Hey, you said it, I do. Yeah. It's like when
- 39:39Speaker 2: people can listen to a song and it reminds you
- 39:42Speaker 2: of a part of your life, or you can use
- 39:44Speaker 2: it as your theme for what you're going through, that
- 39:47Speaker 2: makes it timeless in my opinion.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Do you think we're gonna get some candy hits out
- 39:52Speaker 1: of the transformation you're going through?
- 39:55Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 39:56Speaker 1: Really, I'm excited to hear that I really want a
- 40:00Speaker 1: album from you.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Oh, well, thank you. I definitely think I should work well.
- 40:05Speaker 2: I do have some songs that I already have in
- 40:08Speaker 2: my vault. Then I'm like, okay, I gotta go in
- 40:11Speaker 2: the studio and recorder.
- 40:12Speaker 1: So when we first met each other, your daughter Riley
- 40:15Speaker 1: was there with you, and she's really been following in
- 40:18Speaker 1: your footsteps a little bit with music and definitely reality TV.
- 40:22Speaker 1: Were you nervous at all for her to enter the
- 40:24Speaker 1: reality TV world?
- 40:26Speaker 2: Yes, I would be so nervous. Well, I'm nervous because
- 40:31Speaker 2: it's a difference when you know, I'm good at taking
- 40:35Speaker 2: the heat. I'm good at you know, people can say
- 40:37Speaker 2: whatever about me and I can okay, but you don't
- 40:40Speaker 2: want that for your kid. Like say, for instance, sometimes
- 40:43Speaker 2: people turn on certain reality stars wheah, everybody hates them
- 40:46Speaker 2: and it's putting hate mil or hate tweets or whatever.
- 40:50Speaker 2: She didn't have that experience went first season. She got
- 40:52Speaker 2: a lot of support from the fans. She also handled
- 40:55Speaker 2: herself really well well, thank you, even though she did
- 40:58Speaker 2: have some drama on the show, but she had a
- 41:00Speaker 2: lot of support from the fans. I'm just hoping she
- 41:03Speaker 2: know me on there acting crazy on this new season.
- 41:05Speaker 1: The only moment that I was really curious about with you,
- 41:08Speaker 1: and it could have been exaggerated for TV, was when
- 41:11Speaker 1: she spent all that money on the table. I know
- 41:14Speaker 1: that you've been very successful, but I know how hard
- 41:17Speaker 1: you work, and you must have been so mad.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Yeah. The one thing that I feel that I did
- 41:23Speaker 2: not do a good job on is showing her how
- 41:27Speaker 2: to respect money. You know what I mean, Like, I
- 41:31Speaker 2: feel like I have spoiled her. Okay, why I mean,
- 41:35Speaker 2: I guess you know, it's a double edged sword being
- 41:37Speaker 2: a working mom, and I see this in myself and
- 41:39Speaker 2: some of my other friends who work a lot in
- 41:41Speaker 2: their different fields. You know, you tend to overcompensate in
- 41:45Speaker 2: other areas. I didn't get to pick you up from school,
- 41:48Speaker 2: so you know, my baby sitter picked you up from school.
- 41:50Speaker 2: But I was there for all events and I did
- 41:52Speaker 2: all of this and gonna do it big for the holidays.
- 41:54Speaker 2: We're gonna do this and we're doing that.
- 41:56Speaker 3: But you know, if I miss anything little, it's like, Okay,
- 42:00Speaker 3: let me get her this, let me do that.
- 42:02Speaker 2: And you know, you SI know how to play on you.
- 42:05Speaker 2: You know, like Riley is good at being like well
- 42:09Speaker 2: my mental health is I need a two bedroom because
- 42:14Speaker 2: how do I fall for this every time? I don't know.
- 42:17Speaker 2: But you know, she is smart, she's intelligent. She's very
- 42:22Speaker 2: capable of a lot of things. I didn't go to
- 42:24Speaker 2: college when it came to filling out all the paperwork
- 42:27Speaker 2: and doing she did all that stuff.
- 42:29Speaker 1: You know what I mean by herself. That's impressive.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Like she handles her business. Yeah, but she will
- 42:34Speaker 2: spend some money.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Well now she's making it so it's not spend in mind.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Still, I can't wait till we get to the point
- 42:42Speaker 2: where she's just spending her money. Right now, she's still
- 42:45Speaker 2: spending my money.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Well, you've described her as hard headed in the past.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Where does she get that from?
- 42:49Speaker 2: I guess me. I am stubborn, I am, but she
- 42:53Speaker 2: got me be.
- 42:54Speaker 1: No, just kidding.
- 42:54Speaker 2: See, I thought you were going to say your mother,
- 42:56Speaker 2: Well that too.
- 42:57Speaker 3: She definitely reminds me a lot of my mom. They
- 43:00Speaker 3: bump heads a lot. Mes so funny, but they act
- 43:03Speaker 3: alike very much.
- 43:04Speaker 1: So act alike like they kind of have a calm presence.
- 43:08Speaker 1: But you don't want to mess with them at all.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Can we talk about Mama Joyce? I saw this video
- 43:13Speaker 1: a few days ago. I think you were coming out
- 43:15Speaker 1: of a morning show and she was about to talk
- 43:18Speaker 1: to TMZ. You looked like you got the hook and
- 43:21Speaker 1: you came just in time.
- 43:23Speaker 3: Right, Because I feel like my mom she's been real
- 43:27Speaker 3: sweet lately.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Please don't go asking her questions. It's gonna get her
- 43:31Speaker 2: round up. Don't do it not today.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Well, can I be honest with you. I feel like
- 43:37Speaker 1: there's a reason she's been.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Sweet, probably, but she's trying to be supportive.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Okay, that's nice.
- 43:43Speaker 2: When I'm going through something, I don't really want to
- 43:47Speaker 2: hear your opinion all day. Like, no, I can't deal
- 43:51Speaker 2: with all that, Like I have to deal with my
- 43:53Speaker 2: stuff internally. I'm one of those, you know.
- 43:56Speaker 3: So she's been respecting it, trying it every now and
- 44:01Speaker 3: then she wanted to go.
- 44:02Speaker 2: What they said on the internet. I don't tell me
- 44:05Speaker 2: what these people on the internet's it. So she's been,
- 44:09Speaker 2: you know, trying to let me deal with my situation
- 44:13Speaker 2: without the extra.
- 44:15Speaker 1: It makes me feel like getting a handle on your
- 44:18Speaker 1: mom is like the one thing you have not mastered, because.
- 44:21Speaker 2: It's like, and I don't know if it's a family thing,
- 44:24Speaker 2: but like all of me and most of my cousins,
- 44:29Speaker 2: our moms, they still run us. It's like, okay, mama, okay,
- 44:34Speaker 2: you know, like even when they ain't right, it's just
- 44:36Speaker 2: the way we were raised.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a respect thing too. It's kind of beautiful.
- 44:40Speaker 1: What's something that she's told you that has aged?
- 44:43Speaker 2: Well?
- 44:43Speaker 3: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Remember mad day?
- 44:47Speaker 2: What is that? Ooh? I tell people. This is like
- 44:50Speaker 2: my mama always said. When I was younger, she'd be like,
- 44:53Speaker 2: remember mad day. It's cool.
- 44:55Speaker 3: You know, you be thinking you the best of friends
- 44:57Speaker 3: with somebody, or you think that you're cool.
- 45:00Speaker 2: But when that day that y'all fall out, then either
- 45:05Speaker 2: dy y'all lying on you telling all your business doing
- 45:08Speaker 2: you know, like it's that day. Did you think, oh
- 45:11Speaker 2: this person got my back?
- 45:13Speaker 1: And you probably had to really remember mad day while
- 45:16Speaker 1: you were filming A Housewives.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Yes, it's a lot of mad days on that show
- 45:21Speaker 2: a lot. It happens every time. It's always that one,
- 45:26Speaker 2: always where you think, oh, no, we're tight, that's my girl,
- 45:30Speaker 2: you know, blah blah blah, and then later on when
- 45:32Speaker 2: y'all fall out. It's not too many people that stay
- 45:35Speaker 2: solid for real going.
- 45:36Speaker 1: To fall out you do though, Like, even through this
- 45:40Speaker 1: divorced publicly, you've been pretty.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Oh I'm trying.
- 45:44Speaker 1: It's hard.
- 45:45Speaker 2: I am trying. I know he's not making that easy
- 45:48Speaker 2: for you. What is the most Mama Joyce thing about you?
- 45:51Speaker 2: When I cut you off? I cut you off.
- 45:53Speaker 3: But my mom and I are very different realistically, you know,
- 45:57Speaker 3: the way.
- 45:57Speaker 2: We think and different things we like to do. But
- 46:00Speaker 2: like my mom was a single mom, but she always
- 46:03Speaker 2: made sure that me and my brother we were good.
- 46:06Speaker 2: We always you know, I had the best week, you know,
- 46:08Speaker 2: always lived nicely. And you know, people thought my mama
- 46:13Speaker 2: had a lot of money. You know, seems to be like,
- 46:16Speaker 2: what does your mama do? I don't know. She make
- 46:19Speaker 2: it happy? How did she do it? Oh? My mom
- 46:22Speaker 2: is just resourceful, very resourceful.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Is there something she's never wrong about?
- 46:27Speaker 2: I mean a lot of times, you know, over time
- 46:31Speaker 2: she's proven to be right about a lot of things.
- 46:33Speaker 2: But you know, we just have a different way to
- 46:36Speaker 2: go about things.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm the same with my mom. I love her
- 46:39Speaker 1: so deep that we are so different, so different. So
- 46:41Speaker 1: you're a mom of three and you get to watch
- 46:43Speaker 1: your kids interact all the time. I'm curious if their
- 46:47Speaker 1: sibling dynamic reminds you of your own brother at all.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Yes, And when I watch how Ace looks after lays,
- 46:56Speaker 2: it reminds me so much of my brother, and I
- 46:59Speaker 2: is him. Riley is. My brother's name was Patrick Riley.
- 47:03Speaker 2: We had different dads, so his last name was Riley,
- 47:05Speaker 2: and I named Riley from his last name. Didn't want
- 47:10Speaker 2: to do Patricia, just didn't. They didn't work, so I
- 47:12Speaker 2: went with Riley. But Riley, even though she is a
- 47:16Speaker 2: lot older than Ason, Blaze, she's a great big sister.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Like she you know, plays with them, She makes time
- 47:22Speaker 2: to be with them when she comes in city and
- 47:24Speaker 2: you know, and she loves spending time with them. So
- 47:27Speaker 2: it's really good. But Ace is a great big brother.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Now they bump heads all the time. Now they're a
- 47:32Speaker 2: little closer in age than me and my brother were,
- 47:34Speaker 2: but those two they will bump heads. But Blaze is
- 47:39Speaker 2: like Ace is my best friend, you know, is so sweet.
- 47:44Speaker 2: But like Aces, I don't know how he does it.
- 47:47Speaker 2: But have you ever gon too? Like the gaming places
- 47:49Speaker 2: and you know how you can get something out the
- 47:51Speaker 2: machine with the claw or whatever or the basketball.
- 47:55Speaker 3: It doesn't matter where we go. Ace always wins something.
- 47:59Speaker 1: I feel like he's living into his name.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Yes, exactly. He always wins. I don't know how he
- 48:05Speaker 2: does it.
- 48:06Speaker 3: He's always coming out of there with something and he
- 48:08Speaker 3: gives with the winds her something really and.
- 48:10Speaker 2: He shares he gets it for her. Like that's so sweet.
- 48:14Speaker 2: I love that even when I can't win, he's winning.
- 48:17Speaker 2: That is so sweet.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I want you to share, if you're willing a
- 48:34Speaker 1: little bit about your different motherhood journeys, because you had
- 48:37Speaker 1: Riley when you were younger, and I feel like I
- 48:40Speaker 1: remember you saying that you had so many trials and
- 48:42Speaker 1: tribulations getting pregnant.
- 48:43Speaker 2: With Ace lilllegs and blazes, because they're both the benefits
- 48:46Speaker 2: of IBF. Right. Well, with Riley, it wasn't hard at
- 48:50Speaker 2: all that got pregnant the first time I had six
- 48:53Speaker 2: with her dad.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Well, the all the time, I know, you find value
- 48:58Speaker 1: in like tough stuff, and so that IVF journey was
- 49:01Speaker 1: really tough.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Yeah. Todd and I were dating for two and a
- 49:07Speaker 2: half years before we got married. It occurred to me
- 49:10Speaker 2: that we never had any oops moment, no accidents, no nothing,
- 49:15Speaker 2: And I was like okay, and so I'm like thinking,
- 49:19Speaker 2: it's gotta be him. You know, I didn't think it
- 49:21Speaker 2: was me. I got a child, but he did too,
- 49:23Speaker 2: but I was just like, I didn't think it was me.
- 49:26Speaker 2: But we did the test or whatever, and I guess
- 49:30Speaker 2: one of my tubes was blocked from because I had
- 49:32Speaker 2: multiple iybroid surgeries, so that proved to be an issue,
- 49:40Speaker 2: you know, to get pregnant once we got married or whatever.
- 49:43Speaker 2: So we decided to do IVF and because I was
- 49:47Speaker 2: thirty eight thirty nine, and so we decided to do that,
- 49:50Speaker 2: and yeah, it worked for us.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Is there a life lesson that you didn't want your
- 49:56Speaker 1: kids to have to learn? I'll give you an example.
- 49:58Speaker 1: There's like a long life of eating stuff in my
- 50:03Speaker 1: family and I grew up with My mom doesn't even
- 50:05Speaker 1: realize she did it, and she'll hate listening to the
- 50:08Speaker 1: podcast and hearing it. But at twenty four, twenty five,
- 50:12Speaker 1: I said, this ends with me because I want kids.
- 50:14Speaker 1: I'm not going to give this to my daughter. And
- 50:16Speaker 1: I had to heal it. And I'm wondering if there's
- 50:18Speaker 1: anything that you felt you were like, I'm not going
- 50:22Speaker 1: to do this to my kids.
- 50:23Speaker 2: I guess yeah. I'm trying not to be the type
- 50:26Speaker 2: to really be spanking my kids like that because my mom,
- 50:29Speaker 2: even though she said you never really got Whoopers, I'm like,
- 50:32Speaker 2: where were you? Because I remember.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Plenty if you don't ever forget those when you get them.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Yeah, So I try to allow my kids to at
- 50:42Speaker 2: least say how they're feeling instead of doing that whole like,
- 50:45Speaker 2: don't talk back, don't say that. I mean, I don't
- 50:47Speaker 2: allow them to disrespect me, but I still allow them to,
- 50:53Speaker 2: you know, give their opinion or whatever. Riley thinks everything
- 50:57Speaker 2: is a debate. Sometimes I'm like, maybe I should have
- 51:00Speaker 2: did that, but well, I think she might become a lawyer.
- 51:03Speaker 2: It's given. I tell her every day she needs to
- 51:05Speaker 2: be a lawyer. But like I said, and our family,
- 51:08Speaker 2: it's a pretty known thing, like the moms or they
- 51:12Speaker 2: kind of run things with an iron fist, at least
- 51:14Speaker 2: they did when they were younger. So it's like, as adults,
- 51:17Speaker 2: we're still kind of scared of them. But I noticed
- 51:19Speaker 2: that all my first cousins, well not all of us,
- 51:23Speaker 2: but some of them you tried to lighten up on,
- 51:25Speaker 2: you know, our kids. Well now because I'm close to
- 51:28Speaker 2: my first cousins, their kids and then their kids, you
- 51:30Speaker 2: know what I mean. But I try not to be
- 51:33Speaker 2: so harsh.
- 51:34Speaker 1: I feel like there are so many people that count
- 51:36Speaker 1: on you. You just mentioned like your cousins. What's it
- 51:39Speaker 1: been like to be the engine for so many people.
- 51:42Speaker 2: I look at it as a blessing. And the reason
- 51:44Speaker 2: why I say that is because some people feel like, oh,
- 51:49Speaker 2: you know why, they always got to ask me whatever.
- 51:51Speaker 2: And it's like I was praying with one of my
- 51:53Speaker 2: friends one time, we say in our prayers together and
- 51:56Speaker 2: she's like, God, police must us to always be able
- 51:58Speaker 2: to land and now have to borrow, And I said,
- 52:01Speaker 2: that's a word. Oh my. I do keep saying that
- 52:04Speaker 2: because you know, yeah, for some people may feel like
- 52:07Speaker 2: a burden that you are always the one people always
- 52:09Speaker 2: come to. But that's really a blessing because if people
- 52:13Speaker 2: can come to you and you can do for them,
- 52:15Speaker 2: or you can be the person that looks out for
- 52:18Speaker 2: other people in your family, whether it's helping them through
- 52:20Speaker 2: school or whatever they're going through, that means you're in
- 52:24Speaker 2: a blessed position. And one thing that I always used
- 52:29Speaker 2: to pray from the time I was younger to even now,
- 52:31Speaker 2: it's like God, I promise if you give it to me,
- 52:33Speaker 2: I promise, I'm gonna share it, and I make it
- 52:36Speaker 2: a point to make sure I do that, whether it's
- 52:40Speaker 2: financially or opportunity wise. I'm always trying to put on
- 52:44Speaker 2: everybody in my circle. You know. It's like a thing
- 52:46Speaker 2: for me, like cause me and God got a pact,
- 52:50Speaker 2: he continues to bless me. I'm gonna continue to make
- 52:52Speaker 2: sure I'm using whatever I have and whatever avenues I
- 52:56Speaker 2: have to make sure I'm sharing it amongst the people,
- 52:59Speaker 2: and of course the people that's closest to me, I'm
- 53:02Speaker 2: gonna definitely make sure they're good. You know, even when
- 53:04Speaker 2: they're not asking. If I'm seeing that something needs to
- 53:07Speaker 2: be done, I'm like, okay, what we need to do here? What? Okay?
- 53:10Speaker 2: We need to make sure And like even my little
- 53:13Speaker 2: cousins or you know, the youngsters that's close to me, like, okay,
- 53:17Speaker 2: you need to be you're trying to go to school,
- 53:19Speaker 2: what do you need? It's a blessing to be able
- 53:21Speaker 2: to do that.
- 53:22Speaker 1: I got chills when I heard you say that, because
- 53:24Speaker 1: it's true, and we saw on reality TV sometimes people
- 53:29Speaker 1: take advantage of that in you, and you still stayed
- 53:32Speaker 1: that course. You never let those moments derail you from
- 53:36Speaker 1: continuing to share and call in.
- 53:38Speaker 2: I'm gonna treat people how I want them to treat me.
- 53:42Speaker 2: I'm not gonna be a reflection of them. They're gonna
- 53:45Speaker 2: have to be a reflection of me. And if somebody
- 53:48Speaker 2: mishandles that, then okay, you ex yourself out of the equation.
- 53:53Speaker 2: You get what I'm saying. But that's not gonna determine
- 53:56Speaker 2: how I'm gonna treat the next person that I get
- 53:59Speaker 2: to know, or to anybody that's you know around me.
- 54:03Speaker 2: It's like, if you prove.
- 54:04Speaker 3: Yourself to be worthy of a nice treatment or my
- 54:08Speaker 3: giving spirit.
- 54:09Speaker 2: And that's you, then I just know how to handle you.
- 54:12Speaker 2: I'm gonna go into any situation being me like you
- 54:16Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. Yes, So I'm not gonna let
- 54:18Speaker 2: you determine who I am.
- 54:20Speaker 1: I have to ask you this, then, are you more
- 54:23Speaker 1: Michelle Obama when they go low, we go high? Or
- 54:26Speaker 1: are you Cardi b and taking it to hell?
- 54:28Speaker 2: I'm gonna take it to the floor. I don't know
- 54:29Speaker 2: if I'm gonna quite go to hell. Cardi go away? Ah,
- 54:34Speaker 2: you know? And I love that for sometimes I'd be like, ooh,
- 54:37Speaker 2: I need to take a payro cardon book. Oh, like
- 54:41Speaker 2: air you out. I be feeling like that, but then
- 54:44Speaker 2: I'll be like, I feel like I'm gonna do it
- 54:46Speaker 2: in a way that still hurts, because when I cut
- 54:49Speaker 2: you off, you're gonna feel it. Like my thing is,
- 54:52Speaker 2: if you hang out with somebody who's freely given their resources,
- 54:56Speaker 2: freely giving their friendship, freely giving their support, gonna be
- 54:59Speaker 2: your cheerleading, gonna be this, gonna be that.
- 55:01Speaker 3: And I mean I'm like that with friends, family relationship.
- 55:05Speaker 2: I'm like that. So you do me dirty.
- 55:08Speaker 3: I'm cutting you off and I don't talk about it.
- 55:11Speaker 2: We ain't have to have a conversation. You ain't even
- 55:14Speaker 2: gonna know why I cut you off. You just gonna
- 55:16Speaker 2: know all of a sudden. Damn. She don't show up
- 55:18Speaker 2: for me no more. She don't post me no more.
- 55:20Speaker 2: She don't call me no more. I can't call off
- 55:22Speaker 2: and no favorus no more. Oh she got a project.
- 55:25Speaker 2: I can't be a part of that no more. It's like,
- 55:27Speaker 2: you gonna feel it when I cut you off. It hurts.
- 55:29Speaker 2: It's gonne. I love that so much, it's gonna hurt.
- 55:33Speaker 2: So it may not be in the same way that
- 55:37Speaker 2: she doesn't because I mean, she gonna ear you out.
- 55:40Speaker 2: Oh yeah, she takes it to the floor. She takes
- 55:42Speaker 2: the floor, which I respect that some people need that.
- 55:45Speaker 2: I don't know how to do that. Like I look
- 55:47Speaker 2: at her and I'm like, maybe I should be more
- 55:49Speaker 2: like that. Sometimes I be feeling like I need.
- 55:54Speaker 1: But you could write a book airing people out.
- 55:56Speaker 2: I'm sure, Oh could I I could. But overall, for me,
- 56:00Speaker 2: I'm just to cut you off and never deal with
- 56:02Speaker 2: you again. And it's not hurt. As you see me
- 56:05Speaker 2: continue to progress. You could be like, dang, I could
- 56:08Speaker 2: have been hanging out over there. I could have been ware.
- 56:11Speaker 2: But this is what I chose.
- 56:14Speaker 1: Well in that vein, you recently said life is lifing
- 56:17Speaker 1: right now when life is lifing for you, you said
- 56:19Speaker 1: work is the best kind of therapy. You definitely threw
- 56:23Speaker 1: yourself into work in so many ways when you're going
- 56:25Speaker 1: through loss. What version of you shows up? Is it
- 56:28Speaker 1: the business woman? Is it the songwriter? Maybe there's like
- 56:32Speaker 1: a demure side of you that only shows up with
- 56:34Speaker 1: your family.
- 56:35Speaker 3: I don't know how to be demureor I don't know
- 56:37Speaker 3: how to be the soft girl, y'all.
- 56:39Speaker 2: I'll be trying. I hear y'all talk about that online,
- 56:41Speaker 2: I'd be like, where does she exist? Don't exist to me?
- 56:44Speaker 2: I don't know me neither. I have the dog in me. Yes,
- 56:47Speaker 2: when I'm going through something, I go harder, you know,
- 56:50Speaker 2: because I don't want to feel things. I don't want
- 56:53Speaker 2: to feel sad. I don't want to feel like hurt,
- 56:56Speaker 2: biding situation. And the best way to do that is
- 56:59Speaker 2: stay focused on is next project, stay focused on this old,
- 57:02Speaker 2: this new check about to come. Now I'm feeling better.
- 57:05Speaker 2: I mean a check makes everybody feel better. Yeah, because
- 57:07Speaker 2: it's like, I don't have time to just sit around
- 57:10Speaker 2: and wallow and be sad.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Can I ask you a hard question? And if it's
- 57:14Speaker 1: in your business you want me now, what does it
- 57:16Speaker 1: feel like to be stepping back into single motherhood.
- 57:20Speaker 2: I think it's still going to be different because you know,
- 57:23Speaker 2: Todd is still going to be very involved in their
- 57:27Speaker 2: lives or whatever. So I didn't really have that first
- 57:30Speaker 2: time around. Like, it was very few places that Riley
- 57:33Speaker 2: could go spend a night. She barely stayed at anybody
- 57:37Speaker 2: else's house but her own. It was like one or
- 57:39Speaker 2: two friends and I might let her go over there.
- 57:42Speaker 2: But she wasn't a kid that was able to just
- 57:46Speaker 2: be at other places. And my mom is not one
- 57:48Speaker 2: of them grandmas that you could just well, not that
- 57:51Speaker 2: you mean like you could, but she's just not gonna
- 57:53Speaker 2: do it. Riley never stayed at her grandma's house for
- 57:57Speaker 2: weeks or months. You know, some people go to grandma's, yeah,
- 58:01Speaker 2: like for the summer. No, I never experienced that. So
- 58:05Speaker 2: my child was always at home. And because Tom and
- 58:08Speaker 2: I have been together this whole time, our kids have
- 58:11Speaker 2: always been at home. They never went anywhere.
- 58:14Speaker 3: So I say that to say now that he.
- 58:16Speaker 2: And are separating, and you know, he's gonna be in
- 58:20Speaker 2: his own house and I'm gonna be here. Now, I
- 58:24Speaker 2: gotta get used to, Oh, they're gonna go over there
- 58:26Speaker 2: for a week. We're gonna do all you there and
- 58:30Speaker 2: come over here, and that's gonna be interesting. I've never
- 58:34Speaker 2: experienced that so literally.
- 58:36Speaker 3: You mean sometimes I'm gonna come home and they gonna
- 58:40Speaker 3: be at his.
- 58:40Speaker 2: House instead of my house.
- 58:42Speaker 3: I don't even know what that feels like, never experience that.
- 58:46Speaker 1: Does that make you feel like maybe you'll have time
- 58:48Speaker 1: for your other projects or is it sad like I
- 58:51Speaker 1: want my babies at home.
- 58:52Speaker 2: I don't know yet, because I've never experienced that. So
- 58:55Speaker 2: what I have decided is that I'm going to all
- 59:00Speaker 2: to be a time for me to better schedule my life. Meaning, Okay,
- 59:07Speaker 2: if we plan on spending the time, then I'm gonna
- 59:11Speaker 2: plan my podcasting days, my this, my that, my dad.
- 59:15Speaker 2: Everything is gonna be done on the week that day
- 59:17Speaker 2: at his house. When the week they come back to
- 59:19Speaker 2: my house, I'm gonna make sure that I'm there to
- 59:22Speaker 2: do all the things. Pick you up, We're gonna kick it,
- 59:26Speaker 2: we're gonna have fun. We're gonna have the best of
- 59:29Speaker 2: the best time. And then when you go over there,
- 59:32Speaker 2: I'm gonna go back to work, and then we're gonna
- 59:34Speaker 2: do it like that. I was like, it might be
- 59:37Speaker 2: a good thing, because the thing about it is they
- 59:38Speaker 2: got two parents that truly love them. We want to
- 59:41Speaker 2: spend the most time, so we gonna make the best
- 59:44Speaker 2: of it. I'm gonna plan my work schedule around the
- 59:48Speaker 2: days that he goes to their house.
- 59:49Speaker 1: I love that You're like making it something positive for you.
- 59:52Speaker 1: That's very cool.
- 59:52Speaker 2: I'm very you. It's no other way to think about it,
- 59:55Speaker 2: because here's the thing. It's pros and cons in both situations.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Right when you are a single mom, and you're doing
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: it all yourself and the other parent's not involved. It's
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: a pro and con. Now I know some friends who
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: the other parent was involved and they be arguing about,
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: oh no, he's mad because I want to take him
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: here and I want to take him there. Well, I
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: didn't have those issues. I could do whatever I wanted
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: with Riley. You know, we had the most fun. But
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: then the other slip of that coin was she didn't
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: really have her dad present in her life. And then,
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: you know, kids have those issues that come from that,
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: you know what I mean. But in this situation, their
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: dad is going to be in their life. But then
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: it's like, Okay, now I'm gonna have to ask them, well,
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: how do you feel about this? How do you feel?
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: I didn't have to do that with Riley, So this
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: is a new experience for me.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Can I ask you what made you emotional?
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: Because it's a very emotional thing for Riley that you know,
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: she grew up with her dad.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: Not really involved. Even though now they are, you know, cool,
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: and they're talking now, but she's still trying to heal,
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And so that was an
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: emotional thing. The thought of my kids having to split
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: time is emotional. That's the most emotional part in this
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: whole situation. Really, I'm sorry you're in pain, Candy.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: So I know it's okay, but you put a lot
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: on your shoulders and you make it look easy, but
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: you're the one that has to be with you at night,
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: and it's not easy.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: No, it's not.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: But like I said, I'm gonna find the positives in
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: the situation.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: So you're wrapping up your play and Juliette And if
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: people don't know, it's all about if Juliette had lived
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: her life on her terms instead of dying because of
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: a man.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: How is that a better story to you? How? Yes,
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: it's a great story, Jo, because it's like she's seeing
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: the positives of taking ownership of her life and not
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: letting it be about a relationship and excitement of what's
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: to come, the new things. She has so much to
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: look forward to in our future. And I can really
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: relate to that because it's like everything is about to
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: be brand new. My friend said to me that I
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: was trying to figure out where to go for my
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: birthday for like a group trip with friends or whatever,
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: and I was like, this place could be really fun,
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: but I've been there before. I went with time. She
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: was like, it's gonna be brand new because you're gonna
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: go with your friends. This time is gonna be a
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: whole new, different experience, and I'm like, yeah, Like he
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: and I we did a lot of fun things, you know,
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: a lot of fun things, had a lot of fun whatever.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: But I can do all those things again and it's
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: gonna be a completely different experience this time.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I had a boyfriend one time who I had just
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: started dating, and we went to a restaurant and he
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: was like, have you ever been here before? And I
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: kind of looked at him and I was like, I
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: was here with my ex boyfriend and didn't want to lie.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: And he looked at me and he said, I want
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: to go every single place you've ever been with him
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: and make new memories with you.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: And I was like, that's houds fun. I love that.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: So I want to talk about your birthday because I've
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: heard women call it the fucket fifties.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: I never heard him saying it, but I like it.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: What is a fuck you are no longer going to
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: give in your fifties?
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: I don't know, you know, I don't really give a
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: fuck anyway. I don't like an open book. I'm saying
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: shit out in public. Dad, people like Carl, You're not
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: supposed to say that.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: That's probably gonna be a little bit wilder in my fifties,
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: as you should be.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: You've earned it. I love that, Candy. I wait, I'm
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: a woman to the sex toy line. Maybe you can
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: imagine it's gonna be wild. I love that for you. Okay,
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: I want to play who's saying that?
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Because it's not every day I get an incredible singer
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: songwriter in this chair. So you have a few notable
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: memes you're known for, but one of my favorites. Can
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: you guess it's the iconic who said that?
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: Oh who said that? Thank you? So instead of say
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: that without even thinking, Sometimes like I'll be talking to
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: my friends and they'll be saying, you know, because that's
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: just I said it. I'm like, what's good that? I'm like,
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: you did it again? Like I'm not trying to do
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: that seriously.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: Okay, before you leave me, a few rapid fire questions,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: But Candy Coated Edition, if you could redo one reality moment,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: which one would it be?
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: I wouldn't redo none of them because my thing is
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: if you change anything, then that changed the future of
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: what would to come.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: So when's the last time you said? The lies? The lies?
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: People be lying all the time, So I'm be like
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: the lies. I used that one a lie, especially when
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: I've known somebody lying. I'm like, ooh, the lies, the lies.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: You clock it too, You keep it to yourself, but
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: you clock it. Yeah, I'm like, oh, I need to
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: be lying like that. What's your current song on repeat? Sa,
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: I'll be listening to the songs that I wrote. So yeah,
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: I'm listening to a private playlist that y'all don't even
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: know about you. So I don't know what song I mean.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: For a while, folded was coloney? I like her? Is
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: that an usher sample? I couldn't figure it out? Oh no,
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: that's good question.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Will you get back to me on that?
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: Yeah? Hot take? Candy choice, hot take? What do you mean?
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: What's your candy of choice? If you're at the movies?
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: Oh, I don't eat candy. The the candy that I
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: even like is KitKat.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: If you wrote a part two no scrub right now,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: what would it be called?
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: A part two to those scrubs would be it's hard.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: I'll give you a different one. Who's the last scrub
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: you dealt with?
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: Oh? Wow, that's funny. I know people would love to
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: try to call Tie the scrub, but I'm not gonna
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: call them a scrub. I would have to go back
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: prior to marriage. But now I don't want to put
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: nobody on blast and say any names. I can't do that.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: So you're one of those people whose face says everything,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: like it has subtitles. What is a facial expression you
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: wish you could control?
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: Oh, I can't control my facial expression. That's one thing.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: My face talks before I do. It's like, if I'm
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: thinking it, my face is saying in I don't even
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: know it. What's the most worldwide thing about you? That's
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: a hard question. Music. I would say music is world
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: like world music. Once you write songs that's popular to
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: the world, that's worldwide. That's why I win ther name
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: was talking shit to me that day, Marlowe. I was like,
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: I don't know what, babe, I pitch up worldwide. I
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: don't even know. It just came out. It was because
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: in my mind, well, obviously our show Housewives, it's played
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: lots of places around the world, that's for sure. But musically,
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: where there's hits that I've sung myself or hits that
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: I've written for other people. It's worldwide.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: It is say what you want, So I would say music.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: What is a book You've read, something that you feel
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: like everybody should read?
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: Oh okay, well, financially, I think everybody should read The
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Millionaire next Door.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: I haven't read that, thank you.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I loved that book. I read that and I
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: was a teenager, and it made me realize, like, you know,
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: I always have to show off your money. It's like
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: most millionaires live below their means and you don't even
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: realize they're a millionaire. So I really lived with that
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: for a long time. You know, I had like a
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: couple million in the bank from my twenties, you know
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: what I'm saying. I had a nice house, but it
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: wasn't like a house that a normal family couldn't afford,
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Or you know, I had
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: a decent car, but I wasn't trying to jump to
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: buy a Bugatti, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: So maybe in your fifties, fucking fifties, fuck it, fuck
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: it might be you and your Bugatti.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: Fuck it, fuck it.
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: I love it. That's a good point.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: Pick whichever card calls to you.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: This is cute. Oh you got your own game?
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, they don't call me the Queen of Questions
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: for nothing.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: Any questions? Yeah, all right? What was your aim screen
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: name online? Using name or first even? I really want
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: to know the answer to this hair to taste.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: So obviously it was a little sexually implied.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: I don't know why.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: Address, but I so appreciate your honesty. I so appreciate you.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: You're really special.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: I wish you all good things in this next chapter.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Thank you, friend, I really appreciate it.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Okay, you know what time it is. Today's a good day.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: To have a good day.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: I'll see you next week.
