- 0:00Welcome to Frontline Static, we will get to hear interviews with
- 0:02some of my clients journeys of getting into flight and how they
- 0:05utilize coaching to help them create success of getting hired
- 0:08with less confusion and more ease.
- 0:10Make your dream a reality of getting into flight.
- 0:12Listen in as you hear some of the stories of the people
- 0:14getting there and come join the Flight Prep group.
- 0:22Yeah, you guys are all still here.
- 0:25I'm so glad. OK, we are getting started with
- 0:29this webinar. Let's start out with you guys
- 0:33are in the right place if you are here to hear some people
- 0:39from the Flight Prep Academy. I'm having an interview panel
- 0:41today with some people who are part of the Flight Prep Academy
- 0:44and who have gotten hired in flight both recently and have
- 0:47been flying so very excited. I've never done a webinar like
- 0:51this before and I'm really excited to just have people
- 0:54inside the program talk about their experience and for you to
- 0:58get to know them a little bit better and answer some questions
- 1:00that you guys might have for them.
- 1:02So let's start out with technical things because this is
- 1:06always the issue. I want to make sure that you
- 1:10guys can hear and see all of us. So just some housekeeping
- 1:14things. If you guys are on this webinar
- 1:18right now, we would love to find out if you can hear and see me.
- 1:22OK, so a couple things to note as far as Zoom go down to the
- 1:26bottom, there's a chat box down there.
- 1:29If you could just fill in, I can hear and see you.
- 1:31Great. That gives us an idea that
- 1:33everything's working and functioning.
- 1:35And then down at the bottom, there also is AQ an A box.
- 1:39It has a little question mark in it.
- 1:40That's where we want you guys to put all of your questions that
- 1:43you might have for them or me inside there.
- 1:46We are going to definitely take the time to answer as many
- 1:49questions as we can at the end of kind of chatting with them.
- 1:52Great, thank you. Rebecca, you can hear and see us
- 1:56and I'm wondering to panelists if you can see Rebecca's comment
- 2:01as well. Yes.
- 2:02OK, Genevieve was able to answer back.
- 2:04OK, perfect. You guys are in the right place
- 2:08if flight nursing or flight paramedicine is something that
- 2:12you are interested in. Again, like I said, I've never
- 2:15done this before, but I'm bringing just a live panel of
- 2:17people who are inside my program who have just recently got hired
- 2:22or who have been flying for a little while or who are just a
- 2:27part of the program, who are different phases of of being in
- 2:31the flight prep Academy. So I want to start out by just
- 2:34welcoming you guys for signing up, being here, taking time.
- 2:39I know time for yourself is not always easy.
- 2:44And so I hope that we make this fun and intriguing.
- 2:48We're going to have some great conversation.
- 2:50We're going to go a little bit rogue.
- 2:51We're going to just answer things as they come.
- 2:54And hopefully you guys have a good time and you get clarity
- 2:57and you learn more about how to get to flight nursing today.
- 3:00I want to just start out by getting you guys to meet the
- 3:05people who are the panelists today and we might have a few
- 3:07more that are going to come on. So if they do, we'll introduce
- 3:10them. So let's start out.
- 3:12If you guys just want to tell us your name, what state you're in,
- 3:16and a little bit of about your background or what you're doing
- 3:19currently, who wants to start? I'll go.
- 3:26All right, let's go, Melissa. My name is Melissa, I'm in
- 3:29Southern California. My background in nursing, I was
- 3:34a nurse for about 7 1/2 years total prior to flight.
- 3:38Part of that was just like on the floor, like in telly or like
- 3:42step down. And then I did three years in
- 3:44the emergency department and then that's when I was hired on
- 3:47to flight. And I work on a rotor out in the
- 3:51desert in Borrego Springs. Thanks, Melissa.
- 3:57I'll go. So I'm Sarah.
- 3:59I'm from Georgia, I have been a nurse for a little over 4 years
- 4:04now and just recently got hired into flight and I star in
- 4:09December. My last four years I've been in
- 4:12the ER and I've done a little bit in the ICU.
- 4:16And if you guys haven't heard Sarah's full story, I just
- 4:18interviewed her last week on the podcast.
- 4:20So go back and listen to episode.
- 4:22I think it's 128, Sarah's journey to flight.
- 4:26So you'll get to hear all the details.
- 4:29Thanks, Sarah. I'm Skyler, I live in Colorado
- 4:35and I've been RN for probably about like four or five years.
- 4:40A lot of background was like CNALPN and like long term care
- 4:46and yeah I just got accepted to my dream job for and like dream
- 4:51location and everything for flights and I start in November.
- 4:55A lot of my ER experience was in rural settings, and yeah, that
- 5:00that's still built a great foundation for it.
- 5:03Awesome, thanks Skyler. And Skyler I just had on the
- 5:06podcast recently too, so you can go back and listen to hers as
- 5:08well. Hi everybody, I'm Samantha and
- 5:14I'm in Northern California. I've been in LVN for about 7
- 5:17years now and I'm currently in school for my LVN to BSN bridge
- 5:23and I actually just got hired on with Sutter Health.
- 5:26I'm on day three of orientation so hopefully this will be my
- 5:30next step into the ICU once I get my RN and then flight.
- 5:35I love it. Thanks for joining us, Sam.
- 5:36And I love that you're on because I have had a lot of
- 5:39people reach out to me recently that are like, I'm an LPN or I'm
- 5:43an LVN. And this is the route I'm
- 5:44wanting to go. Help me get on track now.
- 5:46And I really think like it will speed up your timeline to be
- 5:49able to have the support and know the strategy as you're kind
- 5:52of going through it at the same time.
- 5:54So thanks for joining us, of course, right, Genevieve?
- 5:57Hi everyone, you're up. Hi, I'm Genevieve.
- 6:01I've been a nurse for about 12 years, ER, had some ICU
- 6:07experience, some pre hospital experience, and I joined
- 6:11Janessa's flight Prep Academy last year and got hired on
- 6:16within a couple months, started in flight in January.
- 6:20So I'm approaching almost 10 months and I'm happy to be here
- 6:24today with all of you wonderful people.
- 6:27Awesome. Thanks, Genevieve.
- 6:28We can hear you. You're just frozen, but that's
- 6:29OK. We can hear you.
- 6:31Bummer. OK.
- 6:33I know, but we can see that you're answering in the chat, so
- 6:35we could do that too. But I can hear and I can hear
- 6:38you. OK, OK, let's just get into it.
- 6:42What I thought we could do is just round Robin some of these
- 6:45questions. So whoever just wants to answer
- 6:48them. What made you guys?
- 6:51So for everybody that I work with, usually flight is
- 6:56something that they've wanted or always wanted or that they've
- 6:59really, really thought about. So what was it for you that
- 7:03helped you decide to finally just go all in on that decision
- 7:07and what was helpful for you in that?
- 7:11Oh. Go ahead.
- 7:16Yeah, please. Go ahead.
- 7:19So I came across Janessa's Instagram page and I feel like
- 7:24I've been following her for almost 2 years now and I know
- 7:29it's it's been a long time. And I reached out to her one day
- 7:34and I was like how do I do this? And then she basically was just
- 7:37like what's stopping you? And I was like I don't know I
- 7:42have no idea. I have no actual explanation on
- 7:45what is stopping me. I said I think it'd be a really
- 7:48fun job. You know, I'm just getting into
- 7:51my RN career and let's freaking do it.
- 7:55And then I signed up a flight prep Academy class and I'll just
- 8:01kind of stop there because I'm sure you're going to ask more
- 8:03questions, but well. I'm curious like after being in
- 8:06the program now for the time that you've been in there, what
- 8:09do you think was the thing that was stopping you?
- 8:11Because I think this will be helpful for the people that are
- 8:13watching SO. I being in school full time, I
- 8:20have a four year old at home so being a full time mom and a full
- 8:22time wife I was really scared to not be there for my child, to
- 8:27not be there for my husband and also not give it my all to work
- 8:31full time and balance school. Honestly, like seeing these
- 8:35other people in this flight prep Academy, it has given me the the
- 8:39courage, the hope, and also the confidence to be able to say
- 8:44yes, I can accomplish and achieve any goal.
- 8:49I think I've been with this group for maybe two months now,
- 8:52going on three and the first month I set five goals for
- 8:56myself and I accomplished them in two weeks.
- 9:01My goals that I set for October, I only set 2.
- 9:07I think I said maybe 3 and I needed that.
- 9:11I think I accomplished that within three weeks.
- 9:13So having that fear initially just I, I'm still able to be
- 9:23present for my son. I am still able to work full
- 9:25time. I'm still able to balance
- 9:26everything. Having the support and being
- 9:29able to watch the recorded videos or even the podcast, you
- 9:32know, while I'm driving to and from work.
- 9:34If I do a workout, I can throw in, you know, a podcast.
- 9:37And it kind of just gives you that reassurance that we are
- 9:40strong enough and that we are able to accomplish anything we
- 9:43set our minds to. It's all about.
- 9:46I love it because I do hear that that's the common fear,
- 9:49especially for going for this goal is that I have a busy life
- 9:51or I have family or I have school like I've worked.
- 9:54How do I work this into it? But really like this program, I
- 9:56really think helps you balance all that out so you're not
- 10:00overworking, you're not doing all of those things we really
- 10:03like. How can you integrate this goal
- 10:06into your life that you're already living and then give you
- 10:08the confidence in the other things that you're doing?
- 10:10So I think you're a perfect example of that.
- 10:13Thanks for sharing that, Sam. Melissa, what were you going to
- 10:14say? I was just going to stay along
- 10:18those lines. So about two years prior to
- 10:21before I reached out to Janessa, I had, I was at the hospital and
- 10:25we had some event and there was a flight company there and they
- 10:30were advertising. And so I walked up and I spoke
- 10:32with them and one of the gals gave me her card and she's like,
- 10:37why don't you do it now? And I was only about a year and
- 10:40a half in at the ER at that point.
- 10:42And I said, I'm not ready basically.
- 10:44So that was my fear. I was always like, I'm just not,
- 10:46I'm just, I don't have enough experience yet.
- 10:48I'm not ready. And she's like, oh, you have
- 10:51enough. And I just didn't listen though.
- 10:53But I did take her card. And then throughout that time,
- 10:58like the over the next year and a half, while I was waiting to
- 11:00get that to the three-year mark, I had been, of course, telling
- 11:04my family like, this is what I want to do.
- 11:06This has been my dream. But then that kind of like
- 11:09pushed it forward, was meeting them and talking with them.
- 11:11And so I kept telling my family. And actually, like, the catalyst
- 11:15to reaching out to you was that in the last couple months of my
- 11:20dad's life, he was every time I spoke to him on the phone, he
- 11:23said, are you flying yet? Are you flying yet?
- 11:26And then when he passed away, I kind of made a promise at his
- 11:28memorial that, OK, I'm going to do this.
- 11:32I'm going to, I'm going to do this.
- 11:33And so then I reached out to Janessa and I think it was like
- 11:36March of the year that I was hired.
- 11:39And she had me set a goal for like, what's what's our
- 11:42timeline? When do you want to be hired?
- 11:45And back in March, I said December.
- 11:47And she said, I think you can do it faster.
- 11:49And I was hired the next month. Yeah, I love that story because
- 11:53I remember that was your thought that was holding you back as I'm
- 11:56not ready. And so in your mind you like had
- 11:59established these timelines that were like way far in advance.
- 12:03And I remember when we met you saying I want it to be December
- 12:05and I'm like, well, what if we do it in three months?
- 12:08I think I'm. Just in my head trying to make
- 12:09it tangible, like like I wouldn't fail.
- 12:13Like I was trying to make it so that it wouldn't be a fail.
- 12:15Like I have plenty of time to do this, but I realize it could
- 12:19happen a lot quicker. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:21And I love that for you because it just like it was your first
- 12:23interview, right? Yes.
- 12:25And it and it just speed up from.
- 12:28There, everything kind of aligned.
- 12:30So what actually happened was I still have that business card
- 12:33and I found it after speaking with you and I sent an e-mail to
- 12:36her and then did a ride along with her.
- 12:39And I think that she helped push me forward because she
- 12:42remembered me from a couple years ago.
- 12:44Yeah, it's almost like the cat, like you just needed that
- 12:46catalyst to. Just move.
- 12:48Yes. Yeah, I love that.
- 12:51Hear that. My other question for you guys
- 12:53too is people come to me and I'm going to be transparent and
- 13:00honest. I hear them say a lot.
- 13:02Well, I could probably just do this on my own, or I have a
- 13:04friend that does this. I'll just ask them questions.
- 13:07And I do believe that you can do this on your own, but I believe
- 13:11that having the community, having the sport, having a
- 13:13coach, you can see your brain and your obstacles and the
- 13:16things are coming up will help you do it in a shorter amount of
- 13:19time and will help you not quit. I just have seen so many people
- 13:24like start on it and then they get a no or they fail an
- 13:28interview and then they pull back for years.
- 13:30So I'm curious for you guys, like, what's been the difference
- 13:34of having the support and the community versus getting hired
- 13:39on your own? Do you think for you?
- 13:42For me personally, I think it was just having the map and then
- 13:46accountability as well because we were doing weekly calls and
- 13:49you're like, OK, what have you done?
- 13:52And then of course the support that everyone else is going
- 13:54through the same things. And it actually gave me
- 13:58connections of people who have applied for the same company and
- 14:01they helped me by giving me tools to help because there's a
- 14:04pre hire, there's even a pre interview exam that you have to
- 14:07do. And I was able to speak to
- 14:09people and they sent me like study guides and stuff that that
- 14:12the recruiter actually had it sent me and I didn't even know
- 14:15existed. So it just helped having that
- 14:17community. Yeah, I love that.
- 14:22I answer this too along with Melissa does apply to me also,
- 14:25but I had no idea the interview process going into flight like a
- 14:30scenarios like any of that. So this group working and
- 14:33coaching on the case scenarios, the different ways to interview,
- 14:38all that is what I've, I fully believe is what got me hired on.
- 14:42Because if I would have got an interview on my own, I would
- 14:45have went into this interview mind blown and not known how to
- 14:50prepare for the test, how to prepare for the case scenario.
- 14:53Especially as nurses, we don't really talk out the case
- 14:56scenarios. And so that was different to me.
- 15:01And I feel like this group is what really helped get my get my
- 15:04resume prep for the interview and get the connections also to
- 15:09get my EMT because I had no idea of course, here in Georgia to
- 15:12get my EMT. And you're the one that had a
- 15:14connection with somebody else in the group that sent it to me to
- 15:17be able to do that. So definitely the connections
- 15:21and then just getting prepared for the interviews is what
- 15:24helped in this group. Yeah, I love that you said that,
- 15:26Sarah, because a common thing that I hear from people,
- 15:28especially if they haven't worked with me yet but they've
- 15:31done an interview, is that was nothing like I expected.
- 15:34And really what I want you guys to go in is to know what to
- 15:38expect. And then you can show up more
- 15:41confidently. You can show up different
- 15:42because you know what they're going to look like.
- 15:44I see people just studying a whole bunch of like CN books or
- 15:48CCRN books, and I'm like, that's not what you want to do for your
- 15:50interview because at that point they just really want to know
- 15:52who you are, what you value, and the team player you are.
- 15:55So I, I love that you were able to show up with every interview
- 16:00knowing really kind of what to expect and then building on it
- 16:03for the next one after that. Thanks for sharing that.
- 16:08I think the one of my favorite parts about joining the Genesis
- 16:16program and the Flight Prep Academy was kind of gaining the
- 16:19confidence, like we've taken all these steps to kind of get to
- 16:23where we're going, but to have someone kind of turn the lens on
- 16:28us and look back on all of our progress, right?
- 16:30Rebecca, I know you put in the Q&A kind of how do you get over
- 16:34the imposter syndrome part? It doesn't go away, but with the
- 16:38program, you kind of learn, OK, how do I work with this?
- 16:41Because this is going to continue to pop up throughout my
- 16:44life, throughout my career as you learn and you grow, but kind
- 16:47of gaining that confidence. And I did all those things that
- 16:50are on my resume, right? And Janessa really highlights
- 16:53all the progress you've made and you learn to be proud of that
- 16:56and celebrate the wins. Something we talked about is,
- 16:59you know, celebrating the small wins, as you mentioned, Sam,
- 17:03kind of making goals and then checking those off.
- 17:05And you're like, I did that. I did that right.
- 17:08And then also leaving some room for Magic, right?
- 17:11Like putting in all that hard work and saving that business
- 17:14card, as you said, Melissa, from however long ago, whipping it
- 17:17out and say, hey, Remember Me? I'm back.
- 17:20So I think, yeah, even in your, even in my personal life, I felt
- 17:24like I gained a lot of confidence on, you know, it
- 17:27doesn't matter what all the other people are thinking, what
- 17:30they think about me is none of my business, right?
- 17:33Like focus on yourself and the progress you've made and who you
- 17:36want to be. I love that.
- 17:39I love that you shared that too, because I think when people say,
- 17:43oh, I know so and so, or I know someone who's in it, they'll
- 17:46help me, it's still hard to get a non biased view.
- 17:49They're not going to be able to tell you what really is going on
- 17:53because they're so close to you. Whereas like I see so many of
- 17:57the same common things that you guys are facing that I can be
- 18:00like, wait, this is really the thought area you're having about
- 18:03being an imposter and let's work on that.
- 18:05I think that's the difference of having a coach too, having a
- 18:08mentor who is a little bit not your best friend or your family
- 18:12member. Because I can, I can tell you,
- 18:14and you guys know, I'm pretty straight and transparent of, oh,
- 18:17wait, this is the thing that's actually the problem.
- 18:19This is the thing that we need to work on too.
- 18:21So I love that you've said that, Genevieve.
- 18:23Speaking of imposter syndrome, there's a question.
- 18:27From Rebecca, That's great. Like let's talk about imposter
- 18:31syndrome. Like how has this group or how
- 18:33has this process kind of helped you navigate imposter syndrome
- 18:37or what are your guys thoughts on that?
- 18:41So one thing that I'll share is Skylar, I'm going to throw you
- 18:44out there again. So when I had originally applied
- 18:49for Sutter, Skylar had gotten interviewed and I had watched
- 18:52her. Was it a video or was it a
- 18:55podcast? I can't remember now I've
- 18:57watched so many it. Was probably her podcast.
- 18:59But so just listening to those, and Skylar specifically, like,
- 19:05yeah, I remember when I was in my interview, I was so nervous.
- 19:08Like I could feel my heart racing.
- 19:09I could feel my respirations going up.
- 19:10I started to talk really rapid and I remember thinking and
- 19:16picturing Skyler's face. OK, breathe.
- 19:18You got this. It's OK.
- 19:21They want to see, you know, like Janessa was saying, they want to
- 19:24see who you are and they don't want to see this jittery, kind
- 19:28of crazy side of you. Show them who you really are as
- 19:31a nurse, but also as a level headed person.
- 19:34So literally picturing Skylar's face like brought me back.
- 19:36I was able to lower my respirations.
- 19:38I was able to control my pulse. And kind of just.
- 19:42Breathe. And then that kept me grounded
- 19:45and I nailed the interview and now I'm working for the one of
- 19:49the hospitals that I've been wanting to work at.
- 19:51I mean, excuse my language, but shit, I have applied 13 times
- 19:57different positions to this job, but I didn't give up.
- 20:00And so like having Janessa there and having other people in the
- 20:04group, I've had quite a bit of people reach out to me
- 20:07individually and just say, hey, I'm here if you need me.
- 20:11I have this additional support, you know.
- 20:14Some other people will say completely opposite of what
- 20:17other people say. So it's it's nice to kind of
- 20:20hear 5 different people's advice on one thing.
- 20:26And I know Rebecca, in your question, you had also
- 20:29mentioned, you know, having a family.
- 20:31And I also feel like, yeah, it's kind of scary because your
- 20:35husband being in EMS as well. Well, my husband wants, I'm done
- 20:37with my VSN program. He wants to go into CHP.
- 20:40So one thing for me is I keep having this question in the back
- 20:43of my head is am I going to go out and I'm going to risk my
- 20:46life every single day when I go out on this aircraft.
- 20:49Also, my husband's going to go out and risk his life every
- 20:52single day to serve and protect our community.
- 20:55And yeah, that is scary, but at the same time, it also shows our
- 20:59children that we are driven, devoted, and we want to help
- 21:02others and we can do it no matter what challenges are
- 21:07presented in front of us. Sorry I kind of went on a little
- 21:11tangent, but I hope that kind of helps.
- 21:14No, I love that and I love that point of view, especially that
- 21:17there's all females on here. We have men that are in the
- 21:19program, but I'm a huge believer that when we when we give
- 21:24ourselves permission to go for our goals, we give it to our
- 21:26kids too. So I love that you brought that
- 21:29up and I what we everybody was like kind of touching on too is
- 21:32this isn't just me and strategy and mindset, right?
- 21:35You guys get the help of each other and the sport of all each
- 21:38other. You can reach out.
- 21:39Everybody's all over for the country.
- 21:40You can get ideas who's taking the critical care exam for this
- 21:43company, who's done this? Can you help me with case
- 21:46scenarios so you get that support as well from the
- 21:48community? And I think what you were
- 21:50referring to, Sam, was a coaching call that we had had
- 21:53with Skyler the week before your interview, which is great
- 21:57because these weekly calls that we have, if you're not the one
- 22:00who's directly getting the strategy and the coaching or the
- 22:03mindset, you can be watching someone else and thinking, oh,
- 22:06how am I going to be in this interview?
- 22:08How do I prepare myself? And you can glean from what
- 22:11they're getting coached on. So I think that was like a
- 22:13perfect example of how you use that and then use that in your
- 22:16interview. Skyler, were you going to say
- 22:18something? Yeah, I was just going to kind
- 22:21of speak on like the imposter syndrome a little bit.
- 22:23Like I it's definitely something real.
- 22:26And especially kind of being like when you're a newer nurse
- 22:30or you'd like change specialties or something, you're always
- 22:33going to have that. But something that I think's
- 22:36really helped me throughout this program and like kind of build
- 22:38my confidence in that is, you know, like sometimes even just
- 22:42allowing you to sit with the emotion, especially in those
- 22:46moments because with, you know, imposter syndrome, you could
- 22:49start talking negatively in your own head, like questioning your
- 22:53interventions and things like that.
- 22:55And so I remember from a call a couple weeks ago, I think I
- 23:00forgot who you're talking with, but it definitely resonated with
- 23:04me and like just allowing kind of those emotions and to not
- 23:09fight it. And then I've been doing that
- 23:11and it helps me not even fixate on it.
- 23:14Like I used to fixate on these negative emotions and just by
- 23:17being present with it and existing it, maybe even just
- 23:21acknowledging it for a little bit and then moving on.
- 23:24Like, yeah, I'm super nervous right now because this is a
- 23:28really sick patient, but I'm going to do the best that I can
- 23:32and just, yeah, just kind of acknowledge that emotion and
- 23:35don't fixate on it and then just keep moving on.
- 23:37So yeah, I think just not fighting it.
- 23:40That's really helped with me and kind of imposter syndrome.
- 23:44I love that you brought that up because we talk a lot about
- 23:48imposter syndrome, doubt, being nervous, embarrassed, fear, fear
- 23:52of failure, kind of all of those things.
- 23:55And I think really having a grasp on like what that feels
- 23:59like for you is super powerful because often times we fix on it
- 24:03because we don't want to feel it and then we push it away.
- 24:05But when we can just acknowledge it and then we can be with it,
- 24:08and then we can realize, oh, wait, I can have doubt and still
- 24:11show up confidently, or I can have imposter syndrome and still
- 24:14be really successful at getting into flight.
- 24:17That's where things I think, start to change for you.
- 24:19And then also realizing what Genevieve said is imposter
- 24:22syndrome never goes away. You're gonna have that even as a
- 24:25flight nurse. So how can we integrate being
- 24:29one with it and letting it come with us?
- 24:31And that kind of leads me to this, this question, you know,
- 24:35in the Flight Prep Academy, we're talking highly about
- 24:37strategy. I give you guys a five step
- 24:39process, but mindset is a big thing for me too.
- 24:42So I'd love for you guys to share what's like been the one
- 24:46mindset shift that's changed everything for you being a part
- 24:49of this group or what have some thoughts been that have been
- 24:52helpful for you that might be helpful for those who are on or
- 24:55listening? I'm kind of look for everyone
- 24:57because I'd love to hear everybody's thoughts.
- 24:59Well, mine kind of works towards like imposter syndrome that like
- 25:03just remembering that imposter syndrome isn't a sign that you
- 25:06shouldn't be here, it's only a sign that you're growing.
- 25:10And so just taking from that and then just keep showing up every
- 25:13day doing the work and every day it gets a little bit easier.
- 25:17Yeah, you're having fear because you're doing something new and
- 25:19you're playing bigger. Almost like if you don't have
- 25:22imposter syndrome, you don't have fear, then we're not
- 25:24playing out big, we're just playing really small.
- 25:26Right? Of course it's going.
- 25:27To be there. I love that for me, I feel like.
- 25:37You know, I I kind of like especially after sorry.
- 25:39I always talk about my kid, but I feel like after having, you
- 25:43know, I kind of got. Into this.
- 25:44Mindset of like, I don't know who I am as an individual 'cause
- 25:47you you kind of lose that and that's really hard.
- 25:50So I feel like definitely joining this the flight prep
- 25:54Academy class, I was able to gain my confidence back and I
- 25:57was able to challenge myself again.
- 25:59I was with all these tasks that are on hand and just knowing
- 26:03that I do have what is it like 80 something people in this
- 26:07group to support me through this.
- 26:10And so I feel like we're at 90 now, 90 yay.
- 26:15So like having that huge support network and obviously you're,
- 26:19you know, coaching just with everybody.
- 26:22It really has built my confidence.
- 26:24It's changed my mindset 100%. And just saying you can change
- 26:29that negative thought in your head or that imposter syndrome.
- 26:33You can literally take that and you can convert it into
- 26:35something positive and actually grow on it.
- 26:37Use that as to make you better. So that's something that has
- 26:41changed for me since joining the Academy.
- 26:44I love that. Feel like my mindset.
- 26:48In this group has definitely transitioned from being flight
- 26:52nurse and that's my dream to making it become a reality.
- 26:56And I don't know exactly like when the mind shift happened,
- 27:01but I mean, I think it definitely began with like,
- 27:04like, yeah, creating goals, but I don't know, goals were just
- 27:08like, oh, that's still part of my dream.
- 27:10Like flight nursing is my goal. But but just like getting those
- 27:13ride alongs, like, you know, being able to do a ride along in
- 27:16a helicopter and like like visit bases and things like that.
- 27:21And then the mind shift that I had when I was filling out and
- 27:24submitting an application online.
- 27:26And like, yeah, so just just the mindset of shifting from dream
- 27:30to reality, It's been, it's been a really cool experience.
- 27:35I love that. Thanks Skyler.
- 27:39So my mind shift. My mindset, I feel like shifted
- 27:43on our first call when I first met with you because like we
- 27:47discussed on your podcast, I just found out I was pregnant.
- 27:50And so in my mind, I was thinking, this is a goal that's
- 27:53going to be years from now. And I feel like having a baby is
- 27:57going to slow things down. And it did not talking to you,
- 28:01my mind shift. My mindset shifted a lot because
- 28:04then during my pregnancy, I got my EMT, did a lot of ride alongs
- 28:08and just pushed towards this goal.
- 28:10And so I was able to land the job with the company that I feel
- 28:15like works out the best for my family, for continuing to grow
- 28:19my family. And I have that work life
- 28:22balance. So that's where my mind, I feel
- 28:26like helped a lot and I love Sarah.
- 28:29Because like, the theme of our, of your story is that we're
- 28:32going to make flight and your job work for you, not the other
- 28:36way around. And for a lot of us, if flight's
- 28:38been your dream forever, you're just like, I'm going to take
- 28:40whatever I can or I'm going to just get the, I want them to
- 28:43want me, right? But what I try to teach you guys
- 28:45is let's find the best fit for you.
- 28:48And let's, let's just as much as they're dating you, you got to
- 28:51date them. And we have to find the one
- 28:53that's going to be a good match because this is like marrying
- 28:56someone. You're committed to it.
- 28:57We're seeing these people more than we see our family members
- 29:00sometimes and we're living with them.
- 29:02And so the the building that company and that base and that
- 29:08team to who's a good fit for you is really important.
- 29:11And I really like that theme of our conversation of like you
- 29:14found that good fit for you. You found a part time job, you
- 29:17found a regular every Wednesday, one shift a week that's going to
- 29:21work for you and your family. And so I love that about your
- 29:24story. Who was Genevieve have you?
- 29:29Shared yours yet? Is that it the only person who
- 29:33hasn't your mindset shift? I don't.
- 29:38Think they have. I think the mindset shift was
- 29:42kind of actually. Believing.
- 29:46Right. Like I am the flight nurse, I am
- 29:49the flight nurse and all of a sudden, you know, one day at
- 29:52work with, you know, my flight suit on and looking at my patch
- 29:57with my credentials and I'm like, oh, I am, I'm a flight
- 30:00nurse. Like that's me.
- 30:02And that's who people look up to.
- 30:04And when you walk into the room, you know, you might not know
- 30:08everything and know all the answers, but I think it's
- 30:11important how you portray yourself, how you treat the
- 30:15people that you're working with, whether that's the ground
- 30:18agencies or inner facilities and your Co workers on forming that
- 30:22relationship and using your resources.
- 30:25And I think that's kind of all part of your mindset is you
- 30:28don't have to know it all. You're not alone.
- 30:31You are meant to be where you are and believe in yourself,
- 30:35believe that you are the flight nurse, the flight paramedic.
- 30:38And I think it kind of all falls into place afterwards for me.
- 30:43Yeah. I love that because when you
- 30:44believe that, then companies will too and you know, you start
- 30:48to believe that because you're going to start to get
- 30:49interviews, you're going to start to get offers.
- 30:52So that belief piece is, is so huge.
- 30:55What I was thinking about for and and maybe like Sam Skyler
- 30:59and Sarah, Oh, they're all s s. I just realized maybe you guys
- 31:03could answer this question and then Melissa and Genevieve, I
- 31:05kind of have a separate one for you, but what would for you 3
- 31:10Sam, Sarah and Skylar, what would you say is the thing
- 31:14that's really helpful for you or has been helpful for you
- 31:19recognizing both in getting hired or in being successful in
- 31:24so far this path to flight that maybe you didn't think of before
- 31:28or that has maybe helped you hone in in this program?
- 31:31And then for if even Melissa, what would be something advice
- 31:35that you would give people listening who want to get into
- 31:38flight that they can start working on now from a flight
- 31:41nurse perspective that they could be starting to do now that
- 31:45will be helpful for them and getting hired was?
- 31:48That kind of a complicated. Question.
- 31:50When I said it out loud, it was a lot longer than I was thinking
- 31:52in my head. Ask me questions if you need to
- 31:57write this down. Write it down.
- 32:03So. I guess I'll I'll kind of answer
- 32:05first. Oh my gosh, I just lost your.
- 32:09Question. Me too because I was like.
- 32:12That was a long question, no, maybe what if the questions?
- 32:16Yes, and I'll. Write them in the.
- 32:18Chat being. That's been helpful.
- 32:20For you being a part of this program that maybe you didn't
- 32:23realize before joining it, I remember my answer.
- 32:29So. For me, it was I didn't think
- 32:32about, you know, the kind of foundation of the building and
- 32:37networking. So like I have been in LVN for
- 32:40seven years, I have worked in special needs Pediatrics, I've
- 32:44worked in Hospice care, I've worked at a doctor's office,
- 32:47I've done skilled nursing, I've had, you know, 20 something
- 32:49patients to myself and I have also had two patients to myself.
- 32:52So just building on each one of those scenarios, working with
- 32:56special needs children, I know how to talk to family when their
- 32:58child's in distress. That is something that I can use
- 33:01in flight that I never thought that I would ever be able to use
- 33:06Hospice when their families are passing away, whether it's
- 33:10predicted or not, families, you're still in that grieving
- 33:13process. I have spoken to thousands of
- 33:17families members, walking them through the process and I never
- 33:21thought that with me going into flight that my Hospice career
- 33:26would be able to benefit me in that way.
- 33:28The other thing would be the networking aspect is like, OK, I
- 33:32have to call Hospice and I talked to them on a daily basis
- 33:36and since I used to work there, they like to touch base with me.
- 33:39And I told them, oh, my end game is to be in flight.
- 33:42She was like, Oh my gosh, I sold a puppy to the president of Enlo
- 33:47and that's how I got my Zoom call.
- 33:49And so it's like just telling, you know, reaching out to the
- 33:52connections that you already do have and then you're expanding
- 33:55them into your flight community. So now that I've had my Zoom
- 33:59meeting with the Enlow flight company and Chico, like she's
- 34:03like, call me whenever you want. I want to see where you go.
- 34:05If there's ever, you know, once you get your BSN, if there's a
- 34:08position here, just call me like we will make it work for you.
- 34:11I'm super excited and you know, she sent me a link to a
- 34:16different coach, which clearly I'm not going to use, but it's
- 34:22just having different networks out there.
- 34:25And you know, like she told me that reaches a really good
- 34:28program as well. And you probably will get right
- 34:32along if you actually do reach out to them.
- 34:34So just having the the networking aspect and being able
- 34:38to build on my foundation of everything that I've done in my
- 34:42career so far and in flight. I love that you brought that up.
- 34:46Because most people who want to get in the flight, they always
- 34:49ask me, I get hundreds of DMS every day that are like, what's
- 34:52the time and experience I need? What can I be doing to add on to
- 34:55my time and experience? What are the certs that I
- 34:57should, more certs I'm getting? And I'm like, it's not about the
- 34:59time and experience. It's not about the certs.
- 35:01As soon as you know you want flight, what you need to start
- 35:03doing is networking and building out your plan.
- 35:05Because the networking is a thing where you get invited to
- 35:08be hired. That's the thing that's gets you
- 35:10the interviews. That's the thing that gets
- 35:11people a part of the team. So I love that you brought that
- 35:13up. Thanks again.
- 35:17Next, one thing that I. Kind of wish that I gave myself
- 35:25more grace throughout this program because I think I've
- 35:28been working with you maybe like year and a half or so or or two
- 35:32years almost. And you know, there is, it was
- 35:36probably like close to like 8 months ago or almost close to a
- 35:40year, but I got super overwhelmed with kind of
- 35:44everything. And I, you know, like had some
- 35:47stuff going on in my personal life and like, I think it was
- 35:51just like a little bit too much. And so I stepped back from the
- 35:54program for probably like 3 months, to be honest.
- 35:57And I got in my own head during those three months of like,
- 36:02maybe you're not ready for flights.
- 36:03Maybe, you know, maybe this is all too much and there's a
- 36:07reason why you feel that way. But, you know, like I, I didn't
- 36:12give myself grace during that and I feel like I should have.
- 36:16And eventually I did come back and then I've been kind of going
- 36:20strong with your program again. And like it's, it's put me right
- 36:24back on track. So, yeah, just giving myself a
- 36:27little bit of grace. And if I do need a little time
- 36:30to step away, that's OK. That's OK.
- 36:33And so it's, it's nice that you're, you're always there, you
- 36:37know, like this whole group of communities always there to
- 36:39support you and like it's, it's totally understandable if you do
- 36:43need to take a little time to focus on other things.
- 36:46Yeah. And the great.
- 36:47Thing about this, having this many people in it is as they get
- 36:50to know you and you get to know them, we're not going to let you
- 36:52fail. We're not going to let you give
- 36:53up. So we're always going to bring
- 36:55you back in and we're going to welcome you back in when you're
- 36:57ready. Yeah.
- 36:58Yeah, no. And I really appreciated that.
- 37:00Yeah, thanks for. Sharing that.
- 37:04OK, I think the. Biggest take away from for me
- 37:07for this group, like Sam was saying was networking and the
- 37:11resources. I did not realize I guess every
- 37:16all the bases that were out there, all the programs that
- 37:19were out there. And this program has helped me
- 37:22reach out to those contacts to get the contacts and ride
- 37:25alongs. Like I mentioned before, my EMT
- 37:29had no idea about that program and you're the one that told me
- 37:32about it and just the different companies.
- 37:35And then also more than likely somebody in this group has
- 37:39already interviewed with that company so they can give you
- 37:41tips and resources on how to be the most successful with the
- 37:45interviews. And so I feel like that really
- 37:48helped me a lot because you can Google, I've googled so much,
- 37:51YouTube so much and you just can't find things.
- 37:53I feel like I'm flying. Yeah.
- 37:56You're the only one I followed like on Instagram and like, no,
- 37:59but I feel like it's just not out there, the resources.
- 38:01So this program has helped me a lot without name Janessa.
- 38:10Well, honestly, I. Don't know anybody else who, I
- 38:13mean, I know there's like programs and certifications, but
- 38:16I wanted to integrate what I learned from coaching with the
- 38:18mindset piece and building on that with the strategy.
- 38:20So I don't really know anybody else who does that, but I really
- 38:23just made this because I wanted to make this more possible for
- 38:25people who really wanted it. Like I just saw so many people
- 38:29tell me throughout my career being a flight nurse, I really
- 38:31want this. But this happened or I gave up
- 38:33on this and I'm like, no, how can I create a program and a
- 38:36process where they don't give up?
- 38:37They go all the way in and then they surprise themselves when
- 38:40they get there. This is for everybody who wants
- 38:43it. So I'm, I'm really grateful for
- 38:45you guys too, for trusting me and being a part of it.
- 38:48Kate, Genevieve and Melissa, was my question complicated or do
- 38:51you feel like you got you got the question to answer it?
- 38:54I think it was. Essentially advice now that
- 38:58we've been in flight to people right now right on what they can
- 39:04do right now. Besides working for me, I would
- 39:11say what would have helped me a lot if I went back in time is
- 39:16changing my mindset when I was at work to be more of a sponge
- 39:21because I feel like I was in this.
- 39:24I don't know. I was just in this groove where,
- 39:27you know, I was in the emergency room when things came in.
- 39:30I knew what meds you had to give.
- 39:31I knew what, what the processes were.
- 39:33I knew what we had to do. We were taking, Oh my gosh, my
- 39:37thing's going to die. I'll plug it in in just a
- 39:38second. You know, you, you get into this
- 39:42groove and you're not you, you kind of leave out like the
- 39:45thinking portion of it because you already know what to do.
- 39:48So I would say just going into things and asking the whys, why
- 39:52am I giving this medicine? Why am I treating this with
- 39:55this? Why did we do it this way
- 39:56instead? And just kind of like get into
- 39:59that thought process of digging deeper into why you're doing
- 40:02things. And that would have helped me
- 40:03tremendously when we're doing protocols and when you're like
- 40:06in the sky and you just have one other partner and you have to
- 40:09make a. A decision on which presser are
- 40:12we going to hang and why are we going to do that one over this
- 40:15one or what are we going to do for this?
- 40:17And just like kind of thinking outside the box, yeah.
- 40:21I think too with you, Melissa, and you can tell me if I'm going
- 40:24in the wrong direction. But for you, I think it was
- 40:26really helpful when I think about my time working with you
- 40:29was thinking of yourself as a future flight nurse before you
- 40:32even got hired. I think once we got your brain
- 40:34on to who you were in the future and what you looked like and
- 40:38that you could go to her now, that's when things switch for
- 40:41you. And I noticed like that's when
- 40:43it took off. Like that's why I think you
- 40:45really got hired after a month because you were able to like,
- 40:48think of yourself as that flight nurse prior.
- 40:50And I also think that's why you made such a good and easy
- 40:53transition into flight. Yeah, it still has.
- 40:57I still have days of it. I've been on a year and a half.
- 40:59I still have days of imposter syndrome.
- 41:01I'm surrounded by people who have years on me and I still
- 41:07have days where I feel a little dumb, but you just get through
- 41:10it and you talk through it and you have tons of people around
- 41:13you to support you here and at work.
- 41:15So yeah, just. Keep.
- 41:18Going Yeah, keep. Doing it be consistent, like
- 41:23that's really it consistently keep going at it, right,
- 41:27Genevieve, what do you got? I was going to say.
- 41:32As you mentioned, Janessa, kind of if you can.
- 41:37Think of your future self. As that flight nurse, as that
- 41:40flight medic, when I am, you know, flight whatever, how am I
- 41:45going to respond to this or when I am in flight, how am I going
- 41:49to handle this situation? You know, just kind of like
- 41:52train yourself a little bit. Another thing that could be
- 41:55helpful, which I do now is kind of right, especially, you know,
- 41:59in the ERICU or on ground, like your days might get a little
- 42:03busy, but spend time reflecting on all those things that you did
- 42:06throughout the day and whether it's precepting somebody,
- 42:09helping another colleague, you know, celebrate those little
- 42:12wins and give yourself credit for that.
- 42:14Right. And I think as you mentioned,
- 42:17Melissa, sometimes we do things so instinctively and we don't
- 42:20even think about the protocol. We don't have to pull it up, but
- 42:23kind of break it down. And how would I handle that in
- 42:26flight? Or what if I didn't have this
- 42:28medication or I didn't have another Co worker or XY and ZI
- 42:33think those would all kind of be, you know, good things to
- 42:38kind of put into perspective right now.
- 42:42And again, give yourself credit for the work you're doing.
- 42:44You know, we get pretty busy and kind of take a moment to reflect
- 42:47on all the hard work that you have done because times get
- 42:51really hard in flight, whether it's the 24 hour shifts or
- 42:54back-to-back calls. The charting is rough.
- 42:57Times will get tough and think back to like your really tough
- 43:00shifts when you've already been here before, you've done it
- 43:03before. And that will kind of help
- 43:05translate, you know, how you're going to be a good flight nurse
- 43:08or flight medic. Yeah.
- 43:10And I love that. You said that because one, it's
- 43:12like going to the future, you thinking about you kind of in
- 43:15that provider role and start confidently practicing that in
- 43:19your shift. And then also what you both
- 43:23mentioned is have compassion on yourself.
- 43:25Like it, part of having compassion is counting the wins,
- 43:29but also what was I going to say?
- 43:34Also taking care of yourself. We forget to do this.
- 43:37And this is just like, hey, how can I rest really hard today?
- 43:41How can I do nothing because I work so hard.
- 43:44You want to be able to cultivate that because once you get in
- 43:46flight, sometimes your 24 hour shifts turn into 28 hours or
- 43:50sometimes you're 24. You got four more hours of chart
- 43:52and you got three charts that you're backed up on.
- 43:54So this is like cultivating taking care of yourself and
- 43:57knowing when to pull back and really have compassion to.
- 44:01I love that you guys both mentioned that.
- 44:03I would love for you guys who are on watching to put in the,
- 44:11if you could put your questions in the Q&A box so we can see
- 44:13them and we have to go through the chat, but we'll kind of sift
- 44:15through that too. What are some things that are
- 44:18holding you back right now either from going for flight or
- 44:22from joining the flight prep Academy?
- 44:23Because I'd love for them to give you their point of view of
- 44:27like how to answer that. So what are some things that are
- 44:30holding you back for actually going for it or from joining us
- 44:34inside the program or any other questions that you have for them
- 44:37while they while they are here, while you're thinking about that
- 44:40and you're putting that into the Q&A box, I want to tell you guys
- 44:43an offer for you guys to take this further and to come join
- 44:46us, Come build that foundation, come map out your plan.
- 44:49I'm going to talk to you a little bit about the Flight Prep
- 44:51Academy now and then we're going to get to all of your questions
- 44:53and open it up for them to answer for you.
- 44:56But I want to offer you the, the key to success again is
- 45:00community support and having a mapped out plan.
- 45:02So inside the Flight Prep Academy, I want to tell you kind
- 45:05of what it includes. We have these weekly calls that
- 45:07they spoke about. We meet every Tuesday at noon
- 45:10Pacific Standard Time. Everybody works shift work.
- 45:12So not everybody can make every call, but each call is recorded
- 45:15and housed inside member portal so that you can go back and
- 45:19watch the replays whenever you want.
- 45:21I love this because you might be a part of the call and then you
- 45:23might watch it again months later and get something
- 45:26different from it. It also is great because
- 45:28sometimes when I'm coaching you, you're in your head, but if
- 45:31you're watching someone else because you're like, oh, I do
- 45:34the same thing and you're able to kind of course correct or fix
- 45:36your mindset with that. So sometimes it's nice to just
- 45:39watch the replays if you can't make it live or you're busy for
- 45:42some reason, the weekly calls are to support you in the
- 45:45process. So whatever obstacles are coming
- 45:47up for you, fears are coming up for you.
- 45:49This is where we want to kind of iron out the kinks and build on
- 45:52that. So you'll have the weekly calls
- 45:55every Tuesday recorded housing, the member portal.
- 45:58You're also going to get an ongoing group chat that they
- 46:00were talking about. You can reach out to any of us
- 46:02inside that group chat. It's in WhatsApp and 24/7.
- 46:06So if you're like, we just had someone recently talk about how
- 46:08they just got a new certification and how they're
- 46:11kind of nervous about it. You can get support there or
- 46:13like Melissa said, hey, I've just taken the critical care
- 46:16exam. Can someone tell me like
- 46:17resources I should study or other things that I've seen too
- 46:21in this community group chat is so Oh yeah, I work as I fly for
- 46:24this company there is going to be opening.
- 46:25Just wanted to let you guys know so you guys can network within
- 46:29this community as well and get the support 24/7 on your ongoing
- 46:32shifts. And as you're going through this
- 46:33process, you're also going to get the flight prep course,
- 46:39which is for flight interviews specifically, that's inside the
- 46:42member portal. I go over specifically the
- 46:44flight mindset for your interviews, panel interview
- 46:47questions commonly that I see and how to go about answering
- 46:50them authentically. And then a systematic process on
- 46:53how to ace case scenarios and how to verbalize them and lead
- 46:57them. That's a course inside the
- 46:59member portal. And then you're going to get the
- 47:01five step process, which is five courses inside there as well.
- 47:05You're going to have flight mindset to go over how to map
- 47:07about your plan, how to pick what your radius is, how to
- 47:10build your foundation. The third video is ride alongs,
- 47:14how to secure ride alongs, make connections.
- 47:16There's a fourth one on how to get your resume flight ready and
- 47:18you're going to able to bring your resume to the calls and we
- 47:21can workshop that. The next one is on how to get
- 47:24ready for ride along day. So now you got your ride alongs,
- 47:26how do you get ready for them? And then you'll have the
- 47:29interview prep course and as well, all those courses are on
- 47:32demand for you to watch anytime with the replays.
- 47:35The total cost for the program is 2000 for a lifetime
- 47:38membership, meaning you will be in this program for the
- 47:41longevity of however long you want to fly.
- 47:43If you are starting just a nursing school or pre nursing
- 47:46school, this is perfect. Not only we're going to cut your
- 47:48timeline in half, but you're going to have the support for
- 47:50all this time as you're going through all the little decisions
- 47:52that you're making. And then you get to be in this
- 47:55for a lifetime, meaning however long you want to be a flight
- 47:57nurse or a flight medic, we're going to support you.
- 47:59And you can come on these calls or tap into the calls anytime or
- 48:02the community group chat. I'm going to put this the link
- 48:06to join US inside the chat. Just let me know if you guys can
- 48:11see it and click on it. When you click on it at the
- 48:15bottom, there's going to be a couple different options.
- 48:16There's a painful option. If you do the painful option,
- 48:19you're going to get a free one-on-one session with me to
- 48:21use any time to strategize or map out your plan.
- 48:24There's a six monthly payment plan of 350 and there's also a
- 48:2812 monthly payment plan of 176. You can click on that link to
- 48:33join us now, and we hope you can join us and be a part of this
- 48:37awesome program together. And let's get you to flight.
- 48:39So let's talk about questions and if you guys see any
- 48:44questions in the chat, feel free to answer those, but I think we
- 48:47have one in the QA. OK, someone put.
- 48:54I just completed my RPN and working at a hospital in Canada.
- 48:57I'm going back to school next fall for RN.
- 48:59How do I prep myself while I'm in school after completion of
- 49:0420/20/2028 aside joining Genesis coaching and get hired into
- 49:09flight? I'm not sure exactly what your
- 49:11question is. This the same one from?
- 49:13Raven that's in the chat, yes, I believe.
- 49:16So Melissa, OK. But I think she's what what it?
- 49:20Sounds like she's asking is what can she begin right now as a
- 49:23nursing student and whether we think that she should obtain
- 49:28like should she be working on certifications while she's in
- 49:30nursing school? For me personally, I would just
- 49:35focus on nursing school and just doing your best at that.
- 49:40And then I had a thought in my mind that I lost.
- 49:48Maybe it could come back to me. I had a thought.
- 49:50OK, perfect. It'll come back to you.
- 49:52It'll come back. I.
- 49:54Think. Sorry, go ahead.
- 49:56I just think that. Like a lot of nursing students
- 50:00right now and like in the last. Couple of years.
- 50:05Like I think there's like some sort of like stigma saying once
- 50:09you get your RN, you need to do one year of Med surge.
- 50:14That's BS. You can, you know, I, I fell for
- 50:17it. I fell for it.
- 50:20But yeah, I mean, there's, I feel like there's a lot of new
- 50:24programs out there for like new grads to go straight into the ER
- 50:28or the ICU and you just need to find those programs.
- 50:31So I'd say that's the only advice that I have is if you do
- 50:35want to get into flights fairly quickly, don't waste your time
- 50:39doing a year on meds. Yeah, yeah, that was my thought.
- 50:43Someone answered it for you. And Sam, I'd love to hear.
- 50:49Oh. Oh, we missed what you're we.
- 50:51Missed the end thing you were saying, Melissa.
- 50:53Well, I was just going to say. That was going to be my thought
- 50:55is just start looking for new grad programs now for the ICU or
- 50:58the ER and get into those. And then once you get into
- 51:01those, if you're in the ER, you can get your CEN.
- 51:05If you're in the ICU, you can get your C.
- 51:10PCRN. But a lot of people try to take
- 51:13the CFRN or the FPC. If you're a medic beforehand,
- 51:16it's not really necessary because you'll learn so much
- 51:19while you're training. That'll help you pass those
- 51:21exams. It's a really hard test, yeah.
- 51:24And I love. That you mentioned that because
- 51:26and I want to go back to Sam too, because Sam, you're a
- 51:28nursing student. So this is like perfect for you
- 51:30to answer from this point of view.
- 51:31But nursing students, what I've come to find out is that the
- 51:36common mistake that nursing students make is not planning
- 51:38ahead. So then you're just thinking
- 51:41about nursing school because you're trying to get through
- 51:43then you graduate and you're like crap, I got to get a job
- 51:46and then you just take the next best job, which is often times
- 51:48Med surge or whatever. And so where I help you inside
- 51:51my program, if you're a nursing student is let's get you hired
- 51:54in a student intern position or let's get you hired three to
- 51:58four months prior to graduation. So we ensure we get you a
- 52:01critical care position and you want to start planning ahead
- 52:04because if you don't, then you're going to end up in a
- 52:06position or in a or in a department you don't want to be
- 52:09working. And it's going to be even harder
- 52:11to get out of that because the thought is, oh, I'll do one year
- 52:14in Med surg. Well, now you've learned how to
- 52:16be a Med surg nurse. So now it's even harder to
- 52:18switch from Med surg to now being a critical care nurse,
- 52:20which is so different. And then what Melissa said, too,
- 52:23is when I was getting into flight, gosh, almost. 10 years
- 52:27ago. A CCRN or CN was required and
- 52:30flight companies are moving away from that now because the CFRN
- 52:34is required within one to two years of being hired.
- 52:37So not necessary. If you want to get your CCRN or
- 52:40CN just for your own knowledge, great.
- 52:44But know that afterwards, you are going to need to get your
- 52:46CFRN, and I do recommend waiting unless you're a excellent test
- 52:49taker because your company's going to pay for the resources
- 52:52and they're going to pay for your test of taking it.
- 52:53So I love that you mentioned that, Melissa.
- 52:56All right, Sam, tell us your point of view here so I
- 53:00graduate. In April of 2027 and I was
- 53:04previously working at a skilled nursing facility and I was there
- 53:07for a year and a half and I, I freaking hated it.
- 53:11I learned a lot, don't get me wrong, but I realized that I
- 53:14don't want to be there and I'm avoiding Med surg like the
- 53:18plague. Like, I don't want to go there.
- 53:22So what I'm doing now is I with Janessa's encouragement and
- 53:27change of my mindset, I actually, again, like I said, I
- 53:29applied 13 times to different jobs through Sutter.
- 53:34Sutter Health is really close to me and also I love their team.
- 53:42I love their model, their vision, like just everything
- 53:46about setter. I absolutely love it.
- 53:48And I know that I need to get into ICU or ER.
- 53:51I've known that I've always wanted to be in trauma and they
- 53:53have both. So I applied, I got the job and
- 53:58this job that I'm currently at and training for right now, it's
- 54:02actually perfect because I'm covering for somebody who's on
- 54:04maternity leave. Well, once I have a year of this
- 54:08job and then once I come close to my term ending, they're going
- 54:12to go internally and say, hey, I have this LVN.
- 54:15She has six months before she graduates for her RN.
- 54:19Are there any positions available throughout the whole
- 54:21entire setter network? And I mean, this is literally
- 54:24from where I'm at all the way down the coast.
- 54:26So my foot is in the door. I'm hoping that I'll get hired
- 54:31like that 'cause obviously internals you get first pick and
- 54:38I lost my train of thought, sorry.
- 54:41That's OK. But as far as like?
- 54:44Certifications and stuff, you know, I, I thought about doing
- 54:47my CCRN, but you know, as I've heard from a lot of other
- 54:53people, not just Janessa or the girls who are on, but a lot of
- 54:55other people that have reached out to the company or through
- 54:58the flight prep Academy. They said that once you get
- 55:01hired on the, either the hospital will pay for you to get
- 55:04your CCRN or the flight companies will pay for the CFRN.
- 55:09So personally, I'm going to wait just because I want to make sure
- 55:12that I do keep that open mind while I'm in the ICU and be that
- 55:16sponge that Melissa was talking about and just kind of absorb
- 55:19everything and make sure that my mind's still open for when I do
- 55:21get into flight. But I feel your struggles.
- 55:24I feel, you know, your anxiety of going through nursing school.
- 55:29But honestly, like I said earlier, this flight prep
- 55:33Academy through school, through being a full time mom of working
- 55:36full time, full time nursing school and a wife, like I feel
- 55:40like I'm on top of the world. I feel like I can conquer
- 55:43freaking anything right now. And I haven't felt like this in
- 55:46a really long time. And Janessa, I really appreciate
- 55:48your program and it has pushed me to be a better person, a
- 55:52better mom, a better wife, a better employee, a better
- 55:54nursing student and everything. So, and I'm not just saying this
- 55:59just to blow smoke like it is, it's legitimate.
- 56:01And I'm getting teary eyed just because it's it's awesome and
- 56:03I'm grateful to be a part of teary eyed.
- 56:07So I I. Really hope that you guys are
- 56:08able to take take that into consideration and utilize it.
- 56:14I'm getting teary eyed because our.
- 56:15Last call, I don't know if you guys were on our last call, but
- 56:18that's what I ended with. I just said as females, like
- 56:21this is a male dominated industry and as females I don't
- 56:24think we give ourselves enough permission to like be both a mom
- 56:27and go for our dreams and show our kids that stuff.
- 56:30We don't have to ask for permission.
- 56:33Guys don't struggle with this. We do.
- 56:34And so I love being able to hear like you've now given yourself
- 56:38permission to like live out your dream and also be a Good Wife
- 56:41and be a good mom. Like we don't have to choose.
- 56:45So I love that. So thanks for sharing that, Sam
- 56:48and making me cry. I don't see any other questions.
- 56:52Do you guys in the chat? I don't see anything else.
- 56:58What? I would love to end with is what
- 57:01is either a piece of advice that you can give someone who's
- 57:04wanting flight now or a piece of advice that you received that's
- 57:08been really helpful for you and your journey.
- 57:10And I'd love to hear from all of you guys on that as we end this.
- 57:18I know that's a hard. Question I reading that
- 57:20question. I didn't reading the Q and AI
- 57:22didn't hear your question. I'm sorry.
- 57:24Oh that's OK. What's a piece?
- 57:26Of advice that has helped you up into this point, or getting into
- 57:29flight, or a piece of advice that you would give someone else
- 57:33who is really wanting this career.
- 57:36Just do it if you. Want it bad enough it's?
- 57:42Going to happen so just go ahead and do it because you're going
- 57:45to regret it if you don't yeah and the.
- 57:48Regret is so much harder for us people who like are doers.
- 57:52Living with the regret and wondering is so harder than just
- 57:55being afraid to fail and just going for it.
- 57:58What? Mind, Janessa.
- 57:59Full send full send full. Send.
- 58:03I love it. Do it.
- 58:06Cross. That mountain, get on that black
- 58:07diamond snowboarding, Do it. Yeah, do the scary.
- 58:12Things, yes. Were you going to say Sam?
- 58:17I'm sorry, I think. I, I, we missed one of Raven's
- 58:19questions about her currently working in the PCT on the PCU
- 58:25and she they're wanting to know if they should transfer to the
- 58:27ICU. I thought about you and what you
- 58:31would ask me, like if, if I was asking that question, if I was
- 58:34in your shoes, Raven, and if Janessa was talking to me, would
- 58:37it benefit you to get to flight? Would that job?
- 58:41Change benefit you to get into fight and that's something that
- 58:43you can ask yourself either yes or no.
- 58:45And if it doesn't, then stay where you're at.
- 58:49And like everybody else said, just freaking do it.
- 58:53Full send. Take a leap of faith.
- 58:56I mean, in reality, what it's going to hurt is you're going to
- 59:00lose out on $2000 if it doesn't help you.
- 59:02And I, I don't think that that's what it's going to, you're going
- 59:05to build a family, you're going to build your own networking and
- 59:08it's going to be super beneficial.
- 59:10So just do it. I love that.
- 59:12Thanks. Sam Skyler and Genevieve, do you
- 59:16have a piece of advice that's helpful for you or that you
- 59:19could offer to any of them, I'd say.
- 59:22Be the be the type of flight nurse that you want to work
- 59:25with. Oh so.
- 59:26Good. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:28Who you, you know, you know when you go to shift and you know,
- 59:32you're looking at the schedule and you're like, today's going
- 59:34to be a good day. Like be that person.
- 59:37Absolutely. Because if you're that.
- 59:39Person. It doesn't matter who you work
- 59:40with exactly, you're. Always going to bring it.
- 59:43Yep, Yep. I love that.
- 59:46I like that. I would say two things.
- 59:49Remember, remember your why, you know, why are we doing this?
- 59:53Like when things get tough and whether that's, you know, in
- 59:56nursing school or in, you know, in the ERICU or in flight, why
- 1:00:01are we doing this right? Because I think that helps you
- 1:00:05keep going and then also. Something might be new or hard
- 1:00:09for you right now, but it might not be soon.
- 1:00:12Then just remember that soon is coming, yeah?
- 1:00:15And I love the remember why, because for everybody who is a
- 1:00:20part of this group or who wants flight, like it was placed in
- 1:00:23our heart for a reason. And it's it wasn't by
- 1:00:26coincidence. And so we really, I mean, I feel
- 1:00:28like we owe it to ourselves to really see it all the way
- 1:00:30through and to see what that is going to be like when we fully
- 1:00:33can get it. The other word that comes.
- 1:00:37Up is like complacency. Like complacency is comfortable.
- 1:00:41We're safe there, but you don't want to look back and think
- 1:00:45like, shoulda coulda, woulda. Oh my gosh, If I had just tried,
