- 0:00Speaker 1: Mickey Loomis met with reporters on Monday update the coaching
- 0:03Speaker 1: search and all that. Junk Ross Jackson was there. Louisiana
- 0:06Speaker 1: Sports DoD that. Of course, I'll locked on sayings podcast
- 0:09Speaker 1: as well as here.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Now, how are you man hey by doing great? Doing great?
- 0:12Speaker 2: Thanks for having of course.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Biggest takeaway from sitting to Mickey. Sitting and listening to
- 0:17Speaker 1: Mickey Loomis drone on or was it about thirty minutes
- 0:20Speaker 1: or so?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Spoke with us about.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Forty five Maybe I've passed out after that.
- 0:26Speaker 2: And to his credit, to his credit, we were told
- 0:29Speaker 2: probably about with fifteen minutes left that we had about
- 0:31Speaker 2: one more question, and then we just didn't stop asking questions. Okay,
- 0:35Speaker 2: so you know we kind of we kind of pushed it.
- 0:37Speaker 2: But look, I think that the biggest thing that I
- 0:40Speaker 2: think you can take away from this press conference is that, well,
- 0:43Speaker 2: they're kind of looking at things the way they typically
- 0:46Speaker 2: look at things. Right, there's not really a big shift
- 0:49Speaker 2: or mentality shift in terms of the approach from one
- 0:53Speaker 2: season to the next year, going into twenty twenty five
- 0:55Speaker 2: and going into this coaching search. I think that they're
- 0:58Speaker 2: waiting on who that head coach is in order to
- 1:01Speaker 2: be able to further define what some of the changes
- 1:04Speaker 2: are that are on the way. And I think the
- 1:06Speaker 2: other big takeaway is that the team, despite Dennis Allen
- 1:09Speaker 2: saying earlier on this season, I think you'll remember that
- 1:12Speaker 2: they were going to do a deep dive to figure
- 1:13Speaker 2: out what was going on with all of the injuries,
- 1:15Speaker 2: they have not done that deep dive, and so I
- 1:17Speaker 2: guess they're going to do that deep dive to see
- 1:19Speaker 2: if they can get things figured out in terms of
- 1:21Speaker 2: injury and stuff like that. But I think those are
- 1:24Speaker 2: the two biggest things that kind of struck me throughout
- 1:28Speaker 2: that press conference.
- 1:30Speaker 1: He was asked about Derek Carr, and I guess ross,
- 1:33Speaker 1: if nothing else, he was noncommittal.
- 1:35Speaker 3: He didn't definitively say.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that agree.
- 1:38Speaker 1: That makes me think the door is open for Derek
- 1:41Speaker 1: Carr not being back.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Where do you fall in that sliding scale right now?
- 1:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that it comes down to who the
- 1:47Speaker 2: head coach is and what the head coach wants. I
- 1:49Speaker 2: think that's one of the reasons why he kind of
- 1:51Speaker 2: left that a little bit open. You know, he said
- 1:54Speaker 2: that he likes what it is that Derek Carr has
- 1:55Speaker 2: done for them, he kind of accidentally spoke in past
- 1:58Speaker 2: tense and then kind of brought it back in the
- 2:00Speaker 2: present sense at one point in terms of doing that.
- 2:02Speaker 2: But you know, he spoke all about how you know,
- 2:05Speaker 2: if he were if he qualified this year, he would
- 2:07Speaker 2: have been top ten, and a couple of different metrics
- 2:09Speaker 2: and things like that, which all true, all true to
- 2:12Speaker 2: his caste. But I think that's the thing that was
- 2:15Speaker 2: most notable is that there was no Derek Carr is
- 2:17Speaker 2: our quarterback kind of statement, right, And I think that
- 2:20Speaker 2: what that means is that they're going to see what
- 2:24Speaker 2: it is if the new head coach wants. If the
- 2:26Speaker 2: new head coach wants a year with Derek Carr, then
- 2:28Speaker 2: that head coach will get a year with Derek Carr.
- 2:30Speaker 2: If that coach wants another quarterback, then it based on
- 2:35Speaker 2: the lack of commitment. It sounds like the team would
- 2:38Speaker 2: be willing to hear that, and in fact, actually Mickey
- 2:40Speaker 2: was asked if such a thing would make a head
- 2:45Speaker 2: coach seem less desirable say that there was a head
- 2:47Speaker 2: coach that so that they didn't want to work with
- 2:49Speaker 2: Derek Carr, and he did not ascribe to that at all.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And it sounds like they're very much going to take
- 2:55Speaker 2: the lead at the quarterback position from the new head coach.
- 2:58Speaker 1: He's on Twitter at Ross Jackson, NOLA. You want to
- 3:00Speaker 1: give them a follow When you started there, Ros said,
- 3:03Speaker 1: the biggest takeaway was that, I don't want to say
- 3:05Speaker 1: status quo, but they're continue with their same approach. What
- 3:09Speaker 1: does that mean for the salary cap?
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the salary cap is kind of the
- 3:14Speaker 2: one big kind of looming thing. You know. Mickey Loomis
- 3:18Speaker 2: did say that, you know, they're a team that's got
- 3:20Speaker 2: sixty one players on their roster, which is is true.
- 3:25Speaker 2: But so the San Francisco forty nine ers and San
- 3:26Speaker 2: Francisco for niners are forty six million dollars under the
- 3:29Speaker 2: salary cap. So it's less about the number of contracts
- 3:32Speaker 2: that you have. And I think one of the other
- 3:34Speaker 2: things that that Loomis was highlighting was there's all these
- 3:36Speaker 2: other things to guarantees, restructures, also stuff. It's about when
- 3:39Speaker 2: those contracts were given out and what's been done with
- 3:42Speaker 2: those contracts since those contracts were negotiated. And so you've
- 3:46Speaker 2: seen the Thames of course restructure and restructure and restructure
- 3:48Speaker 2: and kind of do this kicking the can down the
- 3:51Speaker 2: road methods for quite a while now. Now the Saints
- 3:53Speaker 2: are currently somewhere between fifty to sixty million dollars over
- 3:56Speaker 2: the salary cap. I say that because we don't actually
- 3:59Speaker 2: know what the salary cap is yet still going into
- 4:01Speaker 2: twenty twenty five, but the estimation is that it's going
- 4:04Speaker 2: to be somewhere north of like two hundred and seventy
- 4:06Speaker 2: million dollars. That would put the team somewhere around fifty
- 4:09Speaker 2: five fifty three million dollars over. That's small potatoes considering
- 4:15Speaker 2: what they've done in the recent past, and so the
- 4:19Speaker 2: salary cap situation has gotten better. So I think you're
- 4:22Speaker 2: going to see them continue to do what they did
- 4:24Speaker 2: over the course of last year, as opposed to what
- 4:27Speaker 2: they've done in previous years, where they kind of maximize
- 4:29Speaker 2: all the restructures in previous years. Last year they were
- 4:32Speaker 2: really kind of only giving out those one year deals.
- 4:35Speaker 2: They only gave out like one or two two year deals.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I think you're probably going to see a same sort
- 4:40Speaker 2: of like fiscally responsible approach with maybe one or two
- 4:45Speaker 2: nice sized signings to a company allow the Chase Young
- 4:48Speaker 2: signing from last year, and in terms of allowing them
- 4:51Speaker 2: to be able to start to really get their way
- 4:54Speaker 2: out of the salary cap. So that's maybe one place
- 4:56Speaker 2: to where the approach isn't changing from re years, but
- 5:01Speaker 2: the approach is still a departure from years past.
- 5:04Speaker 1: It's got a good piece up at Louisiana Sports dot
- 5:06Speaker 1: net right now five takeaways from Mackey Loomis in the
- 5:09Speaker 1: end of your press or if you want to read it.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Everything always free over at Louisiana Sports dot nett. He's
- 5:13Speaker 1: Ross Jackson. Obviously. The other gigantic piece is the head
- 5:17Speaker 1: coaching piece. Can you catch us up on where we are?
- 5:22Speaker 1: Sort of the flyover, who's interviewed, who's coming up, all
- 5:25Speaker 1: that sort of stuff.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yeah, So the people that have interviewed already have all
- 5:28Speaker 2: been virtual interviews, which is per the NFL rules. They've
- 5:33Speaker 2: had interviews so far with defensive coordinator from the Miami Dolphins,
- 5:36Speaker 2: Anthony Weaver, defensive coordinator from the Detroit Lions, the presumed
- 5:40Speaker 2: favorite going into this conversation, Aaron Glenn, and then they
- 5:43Speaker 2: also had an interview with offensive coordinator and assistant head
- 5:45Speaker 2: coach for the New York Giants, Mike Kofka going into
- 5:49Speaker 2: this week there was some expectation that maybe they would
- 5:52Speaker 2: find a way to interview Mike Frabel, but of course
- 5:55Speaker 2: Rabel's ak his job with the New England Patriots, so
- 5:57Speaker 2: you can cross him off of your list. Going into
- 5:59Speaker 2: this week, the expectation is that they'll interview interim head
- 6:03Speaker 2: coach Darren Rizzy at some point this week, and then
- 6:05Speaker 2: sometime Friday and Saturday, interviews with three different offensive coordinators
- 6:10Speaker 2: Kellen Moore from the Philadelphia Eagles, Joe Brady, former offensive
- 6:13Speaker 2: assistant here in New Orleans, and of course a big
- 6:15Speaker 2: part of that twenty nineteen LC champion championship team Joe
- 6:20Speaker 2: Brady over with the Buffalo Bills. And then of course
- 6:23Speaker 2: they also have requested to speak with Cliff Kingsbury of
- 6:26Speaker 2: the Washington Commanders. According to reports, the expectation is that
- 6:29Speaker 2: all three of those interviews will take place Friday and Saturday.
- 6:32Speaker 2: We don't know the day yet for Darren Rizzy's interview. Now,
- 6:35Speaker 2: the big new wrinkle is Mike McCarthy, who has parted
- 6:41Speaker 2: ways with the Dallas Cowboys. Today, he's expected to effectively
- 6:45Speaker 2: become one of the favorites and one of the front
- 6:47Speaker 2: runners to land the New Orleans Saints coaching job now.
- 6:50Speaker 2: So we'll see when they get on the horn, when
- 6:53Speaker 2: they decide to try to bring him in for an
- 6:55Speaker 2: interview and get that conversation done. The interesting thing about
- 6:58Speaker 2: him is that he's a high now that they could
- 7:00Speaker 2: make at any time, that any team that's looking for
- 7:03Speaker 2: head coach could make at any time. They don't have
- 7:05Speaker 2: to kind of follow the NFL timeline. So that's where
- 7:08Speaker 2: the next big wrinkle comes in is where does Mike
- 7:11Speaker 2: McCarthy fit into the puzzle.
- 7:12Speaker 1: For New Where does Mike McCarthy fit into the puzzle
- 7:16Speaker 1: for New Orleans.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yeah, he's going to be one of the top guys.
- 7:19Speaker 2: He's going to be somebody that they that they like.
- 7:21Speaker 2: You know, James Flater was speaking earlier in Dallas and
- 7:25Speaker 2: she was talking about how he's beloved within the building
- 7:28Speaker 2: in New Orleans. Of course, a couple of the big
- 7:30Speaker 2: decision makers on the flack of better phrase kind of
- 7:34Speaker 2: search search party or search search panel if you will,
- 7:38Speaker 2: for the for that head coaching position, Mickey Loomis as
- 7:42Speaker 2: well as Randy Mueller for former general manager. Both of
- 7:45Speaker 2: those guys were on staff Win. Mike McCarthy was an
- 7:48Speaker 2: offensive coordinator here to two thousand and four, and so
- 7:52Speaker 2: they think very highly of him reportedly, and the expectation
- 7:56Speaker 2: is that with him now being available, that he jumps
- 7:59Speaker 2: either to the top or at least near the top
- 8:04Speaker 2: of the list for New Orleans in terms of the
- 8:05Speaker 2: potential candidates for their next head coach in twenty twenty five.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Oh boy, I'm not sure that's going to be met
- 8:13Speaker 1: with resounding praise from this.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I don't think that's going to be the most inspiring higher.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I completely agree with you. I completely agree with you.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Do I think that he's the worst head coach option? No?
- 8:22Speaker 2: But do I think that that hire is not going
- 8:25Speaker 2: to be the most inspiring. Absolutely, I completely agree with you.
- 8:29Speaker 1: There, make sure you check out Locked on Saints podcast YouTube,
- 8:33Speaker 1: whichever you prefer. Of course, you can read Ross's work
- 8:35Speaker 1: every day for free over at Louisiana Sports dot Net.

- 8:40Speaker 2: Yeah, man, absolutely thanks for having me. Seasi
