- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode one twenty of Cards
- 0:20Speaker 1: and Categories. I'm my cool Ard from Rasball, joined as
- 0:23Speaker 1: always by my very good friend Jeremy Brewer, also from Rasball.
- 0:26Speaker 2: How are you doing tonight, Buddy.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Doing well, doing well, Very excited to be here. We
- 0:30Speaker 3: are warming up the hot stove, just like the weather,
- 0:33Speaker 3: so I'm excited to talk through all the moves. And
- 0:35Speaker 3: it has been a flurry lately, so We've got plenty
- 0:38Speaker 3: plenty to talk about, so let's get going.
- 0:40Speaker 2: How about you? You ready and excited? Yeah?
- 0:43Speaker 1: I mean I had to update this rundown a couple
- 0:45Speaker 1: times to reflect all the transactions that just kept pouring in,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and they they're not major of trains reactions, you know,
- 0:51Speaker 1: nothing to the level of Dylan ce Ci or Pete
- 0:54Speaker 1: Alonzo or anything this week, but all fantasy relevant for
- 0:57Speaker 1: twelve to fifteen teamers. I think out there, we've lots
- 1:01Speaker 1: of moves to get through. So I'll tell you right now.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Our main show is focusing on twenty twenty five Tops
- 1:09Speaker 1: Heritage High Number, which is releasing today as we're speaking.
- 1:12Speaker 1: On December seventeenth, Wednesday evening. We're also got some survivor
- 1:17Speaker 1: to get through hopefully tonight to see some survivor winners
- 1:21Speaker 1: and well, I just winner, which will work well with
- 1:24Speaker 1: coming off that Jeff Kent Hall of Fame announcement last week.
- 1:28Speaker 1: But like I said, we've got a lot of transactions
- 1:31Speaker 1: to get through, so let's just dive right into it,
- 1:33Speaker 1: because they're not going to go anywhere, honest. So the
- 1:39Speaker 1: first one we've got, we've got a big old pitcher,
- 1:44Speaker 1: Meryll Kelly going back to the Arizona Diamondbacks after being
- 1:47Speaker 1: traded at the deadline to the Texas Rangers. And I
- 1:52Speaker 1: think he's also from the Phoenix area. So really it
- 1:56Speaker 1: worked really well that Kelly was able to return and
- 1:59Speaker 1: it was a solid sea and for him overall, as
- 2:02Speaker 1: he's put up a total of a one hundred and
- 2:06Speaker 1: eighty four innings with a three fifty two ERA, a
- 2:08Speaker 1: three seventy six FIP, twelve and nine record with the
- 2:12Speaker 1: Rangers and the d Backs. As I mean, he is
- 2:14Speaker 1: thirty six, going to go into his age thirty seven season.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Well it came off of his thirty seven thirty six season,
- 2:20Speaker 1: turned thirty seven in October, so he's been a reliable
- 2:24Speaker 1: kind of number three, number two somewhere in there for
- 2:28Speaker 1: you in terms of fantasy production. But it's just been
- 2:31Speaker 1: steady Eddie now for the past few years. In terms
- 2:34Speaker 1: of looking at his overall rate stats in his K
- 2:39Speaker 1: per nine, I mean, I guess maybe we can throw
- 2:40Speaker 1: twenty twenty four out a little bit in terms of
- 2:42Speaker 1: he was battling a little bit of injury. But you're
- 2:44Speaker 1: looking at a guy who's hovering around eight eight and
- 2:47Speaker 1: a half K nine with a mid threes era, and
- 2:51Speaker 1: that's all being put up even in Arizona. That's a
- 2:53Speaker 1: tough pitching environment. But I know you love it, Meryl Kelly.
- 2:57Speaker 1: You're still feeling good about him going for a couple
- 2:59Speaker 1: more years. This is two year deal that he signed
- 3:01Speaker 1: with the d Backs, and they should keep him around
- 3:05Speaker 1: for I mean at least those two years, but maybe beyond.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 3: No, I love it extally as a vesting year for
- 3:12Speaker 3: a third as well. So I think it could work
- 3:14Speaker 3: out for both parties here. But first of all, the
- 3:17Speaker 3: Diamondbacks needed him like that rotation was rough, rough, rough
- 3:22Speaker 3: between like Ryan Nelson and Eduardo Rodriguez, Brandon fat, like
- 3:27Speaker 3: Mike Soroka, like they had a lot of number threes
- 3:30Speaker 3: and fours.
- 3:31Speaker 2: For sure, Merrill.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Kelly might not be a one, but overall he is
- 3:35Speaker 3: a solid pitcher and one of my favorite picture types,
- 3:38Speaker 3: which is low oalks, good ground balls and really forgettable
- 3:42Speaker 3: from a fantasy perspective because nobody's looking at a guy
- 3:45Speaker 3: like this and he just slides through. You add in
- 3:47Speaker 3: the back of your rotation. He performs like a three
- 3:50Speaker 3: or four and you're happy all year long because you
- 3:52Speaker 3: can just plug am play, high volume, deep into games
- 3:56Speaker 3: kind of guy. So I like this with the d Backs.
- 3:59Speaker 3: I like this for fantasy purposes. He's going home to
- 4:02Speaker 3: your point where he's gonna be very very comfortable in
- 4:06Speaker 3: that Diamondbacks rotation. So good signing, and yeah, pushing up
- 4:11Speaker 3: the ref words for me, I'm not scared about the
- 4:13Speaker 3: age at all here.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, So I mean I put him first because
- 4:17Speaker 1: I think he's probably got the most significant impact because
- 4:20Speaker 1: he is going to be relevant in all those ten
- 4:22Speaker 1: teamers or twelve teamers out there, probably even into ten teamers.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So now we're going to enter what I call the
- 4:28Speaker 1: twilight zone of relievers, because yeah, that is where front
- 4:34Speaker 1: offices really went on a spending spree before they probably
- 4:38Speaker 1: hopefully for their own sakes, take a small break during
- 4:40Speaker 1: the holidays because the flurry of transactions kind of reflect
- 4:45Speaker 1: people wanting to get stuff done. The reliever market was
- 4:48Speaker 1: the number one spot that happened. Let's focus on a
- 4:50Speaker 1: couple of the big ones before we just kind of
- 4:52Speaker 1: get into a total just lineup of all relievers up
- 4:57Speaker 1: and down the league. First one is the Detroit Tigers
- 5:01Speaker 1: signed veteran and future Hall of Famer ken Lee Jansen
- 5:04Speaker 1: to a one year deal with a twelve It's a
- 5:07Speaker 1: nine million dollar contract for the one year with a
- 5:12Speaker 1: two million dollar buyout, a twelve million dollar club option
- 5:14Speaker 1: for twenty twenty seven, just in case he wants to
- 5:16Speaker 1: stick around. And so just last week we were talking
- 5:20Speaker 1: about Kyle Finigan being a great number two closer for Detroit.
- 5:24Speaker 1: This afternoon, there was just some i would say, mixed
- 5:28Speaker 1: reports on what the Tigers are going to do with
- 5:31Speaker 1: the back end of this bullpen. They did kind of
- 5:33Speaker 1: go with a closer by committee for most of last year,
- 5:36Speaker 1: but then Will Vest rose to the top, and then
- 5:39Speaker 1: after the deadline, Kyle Finigan really picked up the majority
- 5:43Speaker 1: of saves. There is Vest faded down the stretch. You
- 5:46Speaker 1: still got Tyer Holton in the mix here too, along
- 5:49Speaker 1: with Vest and Finnegan. Kenley Jansen on roster resource is
- 5:53Speaker 1: sitting at the top of the bullpen as a closer
- 5:55Speaker 1: right now. But this afternoon A. J. Hinch did say
- 5:59Speaker 1: in the front off did say that when they brought
- 6:02Speaker 1: Kenley Jansen over some of the talks during the actual
- 6:06Speaker 1: negotiations with Kenley said, hey, we want your role to
- 6:12Speaker 1: be nebulous. Are you comfortable that Kenley signed on for it?
- 6:15Speaker 1: He is twenty four saves, believe, from five hundred total,
- 6:18Speaker 1: which is a pretty big mark. He's rising up that list,
- 6:22Speaker 1: like I said, gonna be a Hall of Famer because
- 6:23Speaker 1: of all these saves. Do you believe the Tigers? Do
- 6:27Speaker 1: you think that there actually is a closer by committee
- 6:29Speaker 1: happening in Detroit? Or are you putting all your eggs
- 6:31Speaker 1: in the Kenley Jansen basket.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah, this was hard because like all conventional logic says,
- 6:37Speaker 3: Kenley Jansen has to be the closer, because it would
- 6:40Speaker 3: be illogical because he would have had multiple suitors, but
- 6:43Speaker 3: illogical for him to sign to not try to go
- 6:45Speaker 3: after that five hundred saves. Maybe if he was going
- 6:48Speaker 3: back to like the Dodgers or something like that. You
- 6:50Speaker 3: could have easily made that argument and say, hey, he's
- 6:52Speaker 3: going back to the old stomping grounds that he wants
- 6:55Speaker 3: to be a role player, trying to play for a
- 6:56Speaker 3: championship or something. But he's picked Detroit and so you'd
- 7:00Speaker 3: have to think that that that's in his mind. I
- 7:02Speaker 3: get the reports things like that. That said, I think
- 7:06Speaker 3: Kyle Finnigan's the better picture in this bullpen. And you
- 7:09Speaker 3: look at ken Ley's year last year, and you know,
- 7:13Speaker 3: two fifty nine ERA almost a K per nine. You know,
- 7:17Speaker 3: he saved twenty nine games, like you gotta love it, right,
- 7:21Speaker 3: but you had an eighty five percent left on base
- 7:23Speaker 3: a one ninety five BABEI home runs were leaving a
- 7:27Speaker 3: little bit more. His you know x fip was four
- 7:30Speaker 3: to six like, and he's been a few years where
- 7:33Speaker 3: he's been up there. And like I said, Finnigan made
- 7:36Speaker 3: some changes last year. We talked about this last week
- 7:38Speaker 3: and he looked like a really, really good pitcher. So
- 7:42Speaker 3: I think this is one where Jansen gets the majority
- 7:45Speaker 3: of the closed situation, uh, closing opportunities early in the season.
- 7:48Speaker 3: He's gonna try to make a push for that. But
- 7:50Speaker 3: I think that fluid talk that you're getting at is
- 7:53Speaker 3: if he's not cutting it.
- 7:54Speaker 2: They're gonna use Finigan.
- 7:55Speaker 3: But I think he gets the first go at it,
- 7:58Speaker 3: just from a logical perspective. If I'm in, I'm skipping
- 8:01Speaker 3: Jansen and I'm picking up fin again, Layton.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Drafts, Oh, okay, Well, I think we're maybe on different
- 8:06Speaker 1: signs a little bit here because I'm all in on Kenley.
- 8:09Speaker 1: The big thing that stands out to me when I
- 8:12Speaker 1: look at his profile from twenty twenty five is that
- 8:15Speaker 1: Jenson only blue one save. He was pretty good in
- 8:18Speaker 1: actual save situations and was for the Angels, So maybe
- 8:21Speaker 1: the volume wasn't there that we could see some of
- 8:24Speaker 1: the crazy Kenley, but he was solid.
- 8:26Speaker 2: In Boston too.
- 8:27Speaker 1: That some of the hiccups that we saw during the
- 8:30Speaker 1: tail end of his Dodgers career and even into Atlanta
- 8:34Speaker 1: a little bit, where Kenley was kind of blowing saves
- 8:36Speaker 1: here and there and you're a little unsure about what
- 8:39Speaker 1: the future held for him. I think he settled that down.
- 8:42Speaker 1: And you look at Finnegan blew seven saves in total
- 8:45Speaker 1: last year and that was kind of, honestly his achilles
- 8:49Speaker 1: heel at the end of the day, is that he
- 8:51Speaker 1: does blow up every once in a while, and if
- 8:53Speaker 1: he can't find the zone with that splitter, Finnegan can
- 8:55Speaker 1: get himself into trouble. So I'm feeling pretty good about
- 8:58Speaker 1: Jansen here. I think he's kind of re established himself
- 9:01Speaker 1: as a lower K but like just solid closing option
- 9:06Speaker 1: the way that like these Hall of Fame closers kind
- 9:08Speaker 1: of morph into at the end of their careers. So
- 9:10Speaker 1: I'm moving Kenley up to I mean, he's gonna teeter,
- 9:15Speaker 1: honestly on like a back end of top ten closer
- 9:17Speaker 1: for me because of the situation Detroit. And then when
- 9:20Speaker 1: we get into this reliever discussion, I think you'll see
- 9:24Speaker 1: lots of fluid situations that I feel pretty good about
- 9:27Speaker 1: Kenley's staying at top of that tiger step trot.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Personally, yeah, I can't, I say I can't disagree with you,
- 9:33Speaker 3: like because I did, but like, yeah, I get where
- 9:36Speaker 3: you're coming from. I think it's just one of those
- 9:38Speaker 3: that I just don't know if the wheels will stay on.
- 9:41Speaker 3: And maybe the basic way to look at this is
- 9:43Speaker 3: its price dependent, right, and you know, based on the
- 9:46Speaker 3: rumors and the murmurs of the time, like if Itigan's
- 9:49Speaker 3: cheap and free, take them. If Jansen's getting maybe falling
- 9:53Speaker 3: down the charts and you're seeing him as like a
- 9:54Speaker 3: top twenty or top twenty five pricing, like he's in
- 9:57Speaker 3: that kind of murky area, he's a good bet, then right,
- 10:01Speaker 3: I just don't think I can in good faith put
- 10:04Speaker 3: him in that like Ryan Helsley type, you know, back
- 10:09Speaker 3: top ten for me that has the job, has the
- 10:13Speaker 3: job locked down, and I think it's going to rebound.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Now.
- 10:16Speaker 3: You could argue, you might be able to argue that
- 10:18Speaker 3: Jansen is a better pitcher. I just think that the
- 10:21Speaker 3: situations are a little bit different.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, So part of the reason that reliever landscape
- 10:27Speaker 1: is such a mess is because Robert Suarez signed with
- 10:30Speaker 1: the Atlanta Braves over the past week, and so he
- 10:33Speaker 1: is going to be setting up, most likely for Riis
- 10:36Speaker 1: Iglesias there, who is on a one year deal. I think, honestly,
- 10:39Speaker 1: this is a little bit of like a future signing
- 10:41Speaker 1: for the Braves. It's a strange one to lock in
- 10:44Speaker 1: your closer for twenty twenty seven like this, that they're
- 10:48Speaker 1: paying him like that because it is a three year,
- 10:50Speaker 1: forty five million dollar contract. Suarez coming off of a
- 10:53Speaker 1: great season forty saves sixty nine and two thirds innings
- 10:57Speaker 1: two ninety seven ERA with a nine point seven canine,
- 11:00Speaker 1: So he deserved to close a role and I thought
- 11:03Speaker 1: he was going to get a full time gig, but
- 11:06Speaker 1: this wipes him off the board. So how far does
- 11:10Speaker 1: Suarez go down to the draft board for you? Is
- 11:12Speaker 1: he still even on it with this, because you know,
- 11:14Speaker 1: Rysoglesias was shaky last season, but it does look like
- 11:18Speaker 1: he has been re anointed to that role in Atlanta
- 11:21Speaker 1: for now.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think he drops into that really
- 11:26Speaker 3: really solid setup man territory, so like it's strong handcuff
- 11:30Speaker 3: territory here for me, because I do think Glacias has
- 11:34Speaker 3: the role.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, he was spotty.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Here and there, but at the end of the day,
- 11:38Speaker 3: like he's year after year after year, Glacias has figured
- 11:40Speaker 3: it out and made it happen. So I think he
- 11:43Speaker 3: has that full run. I do think that Suarez is
- 11:48Speaker 3: one of the absolute best setupmen. And so if something
- 11:52Speaker 3: was to happen trade or an injury or something like that,
- 11:55Speaker 3: performance falls off, you don't want Sores out on the
- 11:58Speaker 3: waiver wire. You want him in in your on your roster.
- 12:02Speaker 3: So especially if you have a glaciers. You want that
- 12:04Speaker 3: that handcuff there, So I'm with you. I thought he
- 12:07Speaker 3: was gonna sign. I thought he's gonna be a closer.
- 12:10Speaker 3: There's a lot of signings that happened this last few days,
- 12:12Speaker 3: and I thought, like, hey, outside shadow of a closer
- 12:14Speaker 3: with the closer closer. But it's kind of the rich
- 12:16Speaker 3: getting richer type of scenario here for sure.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and you can't blame Suarez when somebody throws forty
- 12:21Speaker 1: five million dollars in front of you as a reliever,
- 12:23Speaker 1: you gotta strike when the iron's hot there.
- 12:26Speaker 2: So yeah, but I.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Do think this is an opportunity in like dynasty leagues
- 12:29Speaker 3: things like that, like kick him up for cheap and
- 12:31Speaker 3: then you're just you're inheriting closure the next year.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that is a good point.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Okay, let's get into the myriad of other reliever signings
- 12:40Speaker 1: that we have out there, because wow, it was a
- 12:43Speaker 1: lot and a lot that happened, honestly, just over like
- 12:46Speaker 1: the last twenty four hours. I think partly because like
- 12:48Speaker 1: the domino started to fall. Once you're in the negotiations
- 12:52Speaker 1: for some of these relievers and one of them goes
- 12:54Speaker 1: off the board, you know you have to strike and
- 12:56Speaker 1: pick up the next one before he disappears as well.
- 12:59Speaker 1: So we've alluded to this a few times I think
- 13:02Speaker 1: so far in the offseason. But the closer and saves
- 13:05Speaker 1: landscape is an absolute mess for twenty twenty six right now.
- 13:09Speaker 1: If you're playing five by five standard roto and especially
- 13:13Speaker 1: I mean, I know people are gonna be start doing
- 13:15Speaker 1: draft champions and stuff over the holidays because you know
- 13:18Speaker 1: they've got the time and there are so many unsettled,
- 13:21Speaker 1: fluid situations out there. So I'm gonna rattle through all
- 13:24Speaker 1: these signings. Then we'll kind of fall back up see
- 13:27Speaker 1: if any of them pop out to you because you
- 13:29Speaker 1: think that there's a better chance for saves than any
- 13:32Speaker 1: other situations, or just kind of overall thoughts on any
- 13:36Speaker 1: other landing spots, because I think the guys I'm gonna
- 13:40Speaker 1: go through none of them are probably like the de
- 13:43Speaker 1: facto closer where they're at, but you're gonna start drafting
- 13:47Speaker 1: them that way because they could be you know that,
- 13:50Speaker 1: you know, when the season starts in late March, they
- 13:53Speaker 1: might be in a setup or seventh inning role technically,
- 13:56Speaker 1: but these are the type of guys where in June
- 13:59Speaker 1: they get into the world. Then they put up twenty
- 14:01Speaker 1: twenty five staves. You've got to be prepared for that,
- 14:03Speaker 1: especially in any of those dcs or draft and holds
- 14:06Speaker 1: or anything like that. So here we go, first one
- 14:09Speaker 1: Luke Weaver to the Mets, Brad Keller to the Phillies,
- 14:13Speaker 1: Chris Martin back to the Texas Rangers, Alexis Diaz also
- 14:17Speaker 1: landing in Texas. We have Jordan Romano going to the Angels.
- 14:21Speaker 1: We also have Drew Palmeran's going to the Angels, Jason
- 14:24Speaker 1: Foley to the Giants, Gregory Soto to the Pirates which
- 14:28Speaker 1: was announced last week but signed in the interm so
- 14:31Speaker 1: I put him back on the list. And then probably
- 14:34Speaker 1: the most shocking one of fat contract three years to
- 14:36Speaker 1: Tyler Rodgers to the Blue Jays. But once you look
- 14:39Speaker 1: at those career stats for Tyler Rodgers, he will kind
- 14:42Speaker 1: of re configure maybe what your thoughts on him are,
- 14:46Speaker 1: but honestly still might find himself into some safe situations
- 14:51Speaker 1: given what we saw from Jeff Hoffman in Toronto. There all, right, of.
- 14:54Speaker 2: That one, two, three, four, five, six, eight.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Nine pack of signings that I just threw at you,
- 15:02Speaker 1: any of them stand out too?
- 15:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean there's definitely there's huge talent there right,
- 15:08Speaker 3: And there's a number of guys here that I thought,
- 15:10Speaker 3: I really thought that we're gonna be closures on other teams.
- 15:13Speaker 3: I'm thinking Luke Weaver, Brad Keller. I thought both of
- 15:16Speaker 3: those guys had high chances to land with somebody like
- 15:21Speaker 3: the Marlins or maybe San Francisco or Arizona or something
- 15:26Speaker 3: like that and be the de facto closer that just
- 15:29Speaker 3: didn't happen. So like they're they're dropping down draft boards.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Not only did they sign in a spot where it's
- 15:35Speaker 3: kind of like the Robert Swarre situation, but they are
- 15:37Speaker 3: a stepped down from Brothers Suarez and they're behind absolutely
- 15:40Speaker 3: lockdown closures that that hurts them. The two guys that
- 15:44Speaker 3: I think jump out with the most potential for saves,
- 15:47Speaker 3: and to be very clear, I'm not like excited about
- 15:49Speaker 3: either of these is Alexis Diaz. With early reports seemed
- 15:54Speaker 3: like he might be like the slightly de facto closer
- 15:57Speaker 3: in Texas, and he's got a little that background. He's
- 16:00Speaker 3: before you know, the Dodgers seem to invest like there's
- 16:04Speaker 3: a little there that seems like he might be like
- 16:06Speaker 3: the dart throw for the Rangers that are making here,
- 16:08Speaker 3: but he scares of the Jesus out of me, So like,
- 16:10Speaker 3: I'm not investing in it, but I think if you're
- 16:12Speaker 3: desperate for saves, he's he's the best bet there. And
- 16:16Speaker 3: but I'm saying the odds of him being the closure
- 16:18Speaker 3: is not probably above fifty percent. It's just there's like,
- 16:20Speaker 3: you know, three or four other guys there that are
- 16:22Speaker 3: probably in the ten to twenty percent. So so Alexis
- 16:26Speaker 3: Dias the Rangers, if you're if you're picking a guy
- 16:28Speaker 3: that you want to be the closer, might have those saves.
- 16:31Speaker 3: He's probably my betting favorite on the list. And my
- 16:33Speaker 3: second one is Tyler Rogers, and that's just because of
- 16:38Speaker 3: how shaky we we saw the situation in Toronto be,
- 16:43Speaker 3: you know, not just with Hoffman, but like the rest
- 16:46Speaker 3: of the bullpens seemed to struggle. And Rogers absolutely does
- 16:50Speaker 3: not have the profile of a closure like this is
- 16:54Speaker 3: like just dreadful for you know, a profile of closure
- 16:57Speaker 3: just doesn't look like it. But I think he's one
- 16:59Speaker 3: of those that ends up being like the most trusted
- 17:02Speaker 3: guy in that bullpen, and you might see him just
- 17:05Speaker 3: sneak into a handful of saves here because they get
- 17:08Speaker 3: in a situation the world they're like, you put Hoffman in,
- 17:10Speaker 3: they pull Hoffin out, and here comes here comes Syler Rogers.
- 17:13Speaker 3: And so I think that's the guy that is like
- 17:16Speaker 3: the dark horse here and might actually be a little
- 17:19Speaker 3: bit more intriguing as the season wears on. But he, again,
- 17:21Speaker 3: he doesn't have the lockdown closer stuff, So I think
- 17:23Speaker 3: it's really hard to project that. I think he's the
- 17:25Speaker 3: kind of guy that ends up with five or ten
- 17:26Speaker 3: saves just because he, you know, it's situationally ends up
- 17:30Speaker 3: in that position. So the bigger thing for me is
- 17:34Speaker 3: there's a heck of a lot of closure jobs still
- 17:36Speaker 3: up for grabs. I thought, we're gonna be taken by
- 17:38Speaker 3: a lot of these names. And you want to go
- 17:41Speaker 3: to Miami, you want to go to like well still Texas,
- 17:46Speaker 3: you go to the Athletics, you go to the Diamondbacks, Giants,
- 17:51Speaker 3: even the Nationals, White Sox, the Twins, the Cardinals. Like,
- 17:57Speaker 3: there's a number of teams here that do not have
- 18:00Speaker 3: a clear closer, and that is about a third of
- 18:02Speaker 3: the league. And that's gonna create massive chaos in the
- 18:06Speaker 3: fantasy world.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think so, I do want to shout
- 18:10Speaker 1: out Jason Foley because it's been a little while since
- 18:12Speaker 1: we've seen him in a closer role, but that San
- 18:14Speaker 1: Francisco bullpen is pretty weak. The other person I want
- 18:18Speaker 1: to shout out he didn't sign, But I think the
- 18:20Speaker 1: reason he didn't is because some of those landing spots
- 18:23Speaker 1: you've talked about. He's probably a negotiation and that's why
- 18:26Speaker 1: Texas pulled the trigger on Diaz and Martin. Texas's reliever
- 18:30Speaker 1: from last year, Seawn Armstrong was nails down the stretch
- 18:33Speaker 1: and I think he's gonna get one of those real jobs.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So if you're looking at somebody in draft and holds
- 18:38Speaker 1: to maybe put into your draft queue now before he
- 18:42Speaker 1: signs and you get a late saves option or a
- 18:45Speaker 1: slave's option now where it's gonna the draft price is
- 18:50Speaker 1: gonna maybe boost hundred hundred and fifty picks after he
- 18:53Speaker 1: gets signed, Sean Romstrong, that's gonna be I think a
- 18:56Speaker 1: great pick. And then also, happy birthday Tyler Rodgers.
- 18:59Speaker 2: It is his birthday.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Did on the seventeen Oh.
- 19:01Speaker 3: I didn't say that was fangraft page. It is, yeah,
- 19:04Speaker 3: thirty five years old.
- 19:05Speaker 1: I was on a savant page looking because his quality
- 19:08Speaker 1: of contact is just so he gets He just gets
- 19:12Speaker 1: duck snort after duck snort, with that weird delivery that
- 19:16Speaker 1: you know. It's a funky profile and not great if
- 19:19Speaker 1: you're in like a K nine league, But if you're
- 19:21Speaker 1: in a situation where you just need ratios, he puts
- 19:24Speaker 1: them up.
- 19:25Speaker 2: He's a holds league king.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Yes absolutely. But yeah, he had the little birthday present
- 19:31Speaker 1: on his page on Savant today, So once again, happy
- 19:34Speaker 1: thirty fifth birthday, Tyler Rodgers. Okay, let's get back into
- 19:37Speaker 1: some more signings. Next one we have is in New York,
- 19:41Speaker 1: where the Mets inked Jorge Polanco to a two year,
- 19:45Speaker 1: forty million dollar contract. Now, Polanco had a great season
- 19:49Speaker 1: last year with the Mariners. Twenty six homers, seventy eight rabies,
- 19:52Speaker 1: two sixty five three twenty six four to ninety five
- 19:55Speaker 1: slash line, a career best throwing out the five game
- 20:00Speaker 1: sample when he was a rookie, a career best one
- 20:03Speaker 1: thirty two WRSC plus, and although he's never played any
- 20:07Speaker 1: in his life outside of I think he played like
- 20:10Speaker 1: one out there. First base is where it looks like
- 20:13Speaker 1: he's going to be destined to play with the Mets.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Or a Polanco or DH He has been such a
- 20:18Speaker 1: solid switchy hitter that it could work, and the defense
- 20:23Speaker 1: has been pretty gnarly now for quite a while. As
- 20:28Speaker 1: you know, he's tried to play short second, third base
- 20:31Speaker 1: in his career before. But now he's thirty two, gonna
- 20:34Speaker 1: be a piece of the New York Mets, replacing the
- 20:36Speaker 1: pie Alando production. What do you think about Polanco landing
- 20:40Speaker 1: in New York is do you think he can put
- 20:42Speaker 1: up another season like last year? Did you like the
- 20:45Speaker 1: games that he showed or was a flash in the
- 20:48Speaker 1: planet pan Fluke?
- 20:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I this this is not a replacement
- 20:53Speaker 3: for Pee Alonzo. Let's let's be very clear about that.
- 20:57Speaker 3: I did like a little of the growth that we
- 20:59Speaker 3: saw last year, but it felt a little bit more
- 21:02Speaker 3: like the career year type scenario, which again wasn't really
- 21:06Speaker 3: a career year. He's had better seasons, but it's been
- 21:09Speaker 3: about five years. But he did make some significant improvements
- 21:13Speaker 3: at the plate and got back to kind of what
- 21:15Speaker 3: he was when his kind of heyday with the with
- 21:17Speaker 3: the twins, and so I think that there's a possibility
- 21:21Speaker 3: that he carries this forward, but I'm I'm still projecting
- 21:23Speaker 3: him his like a twenty homer bat, maybe seventy runs,
- 21:28Speaker 3: eighty five RBIs in a little bit better ballpark. I
- 21:33Speaker 3: just I don't see the significant growth. Like he again,
- 21:38Speaker 3: better profile, last year, better played, approach, things were better.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I just think when you start to look at what
- 21:45Speaker 3: the New York tax is going to be on him
- 21:48Speaker 3: from a fantasy perspective, and you're a first baseman, expectation
- 21:52Speaker 3: that you gotta put up all these big numbers, I
- 21:55Speaker 3: just I don't know that that's gonna happen. So I'm
- 21:57Speaker 3: a little a little sour here on horror, just because
- 22:01Speaker 3: I think the price is going to reflect last year
- 22:03Speaker 3: plus growth and I think it's last year, but diaversion
- 22:07Speaker 3: is more likely what we're gonna land up. So again,
- 22:09Speaker 3: I he could repeat last year, I think it's gonna
- 22:12Speaker 3: be a little bit less than that. Maybe a few
- 22:15Speaker 3: more accounting stats because maybe gets a law fuller season,
- 22:18Speaker 3: but it's been five years since he got more than
- 22:21Speaker 3: hundred fourty games, so that might be pushing it.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's all fair. I guess it'll be
- 22:27Speaker 1: interesting to see where his price kind of falls and drafts,
- 22:29Speaker 1: But I mean he's a viable starting second basement and
- 22:32Speaker 1: my option. It's just kind of don't pay up for
- 22:34Speaker 1: more than I think.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I think.
- 22:36Speaker 3: I think that's where it's like, yeah, I don't. He's viable,
- 22:40Speaker 3: but he's not like the guy exactly.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Okay, well, let's get into our next signing, as we're
- 22:46Speaker 1: gonna stay in the NL East. Outfielder a Dolely scar
- 22:49Speaker 1: Seas signed a one year deal ten million dollars with
- 22:52Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Phillies, where looks like he's gonna be the
- 22:55Speaker 1: starting right fielder, and even Dombrowski, I think said over
- 22:59Speaker 1: the past couple of days that the starting outfield was
- 23:01Speaker 1: going to be Brandon Marsha left, Justin Crawford in center,
- 23:05Speaker 1: so that's gonna be a big boon for stolen bases
- 23:08Speaker 1: out there, and then a Doley Scarcia in right field.
- 23:11Speaker 1: As There's it's no secret that they want to get
- 23:14Speaker 1: rid of Nick Castianos, and there's no way they're going
- 23:16Speaker 1: to get anything back from him because it's very obvious
- 23:19Speaker 1: the Phillies are just gonna cut him here before they
- 23:21Speaker 1: get into spring training, and no team needs to actually
- 23:24Speaker 1: give up anything other than signing Castianos after he gets cut.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Really really difficult season for a Dolas Garcia last year
- 23:31Speaker 1: where I mean, this guy was a star two years ago,
- 23:35Speaker 1: led the Texas Rangers to that World Series victory, and
- 23:39Speaker 1: now is coming off of a season with an eighty
- 23:41Speaker 1: three WRC plus a two twenty seven, two seventy one,
- 23:45Speaker 1: three ninety four slash line. Never great to see the
- 23:48Speaker 1: slug below four hundred for a guy that's a slugger
- 23:51Speaker 1: like this, nineteen homers, thirteen stolen bases, one hundred and
- 23:54Speaker 1: thirty five games. The plate approach has been atrocious for
- 23:58Speaker 1: Dolas Garcia, where it's just worked back into kind of
- 24:01Speaker 1: why he bounced around the league and kind of was
- 24:04Speaker 1: cut by the Cardinals, and I believe he was also
- 24:07Speaker 1: waived at one point by Philadelphia, like when he was
- 24:10Speaker 1: kind of bouncing around rosters too. But better situation in
- 24:15Speaker 1: terms of lineup in ballpark here for Garcia. Do you
- 24:18Speaker 1: think there's a chance he could bounce back in twenty
- 24:20Speaker 1: twenty six.
- 24:22Speaker 3: I'm having a hard time to see that. Like I
- 24:24Speaker 3: do think it's a better ballpark. I do think it's
- 24:26Speaker 3: a better situation. I do think he's got value because
- 24:31Speaker 3: you know, into today's day and age, like he's if
- 24:35Speaker 3: he's hitting two thirty two thirty five, and he's stealing
- 24:39Speaker 3: you know, ten to fifteen bases, and he's hitting twenty homers,
- 24:42Speaker 3: and he's staying healthy enough to put up geese and
- 24:44Speaker 3: counting stats like that's that's a valuable you know, four third,
- 24:48Speaker 3: fourth outfielder type of thing, and so there's something to
- 24:51Speaker 3: like there, But I just don't see him bouncing back
- 24:54Speaker 3: to be that like one hundred rbi thirty homer, you know,
- 24:57Speaker 3: two point fifty monster that he was for like years
- 25:00Speaker 3: there in Texas. It seems like he had, like his
- 25:04Speaker 3: game just seems like it's aging like five years beyond
- 25:07Speaker 3: what he is, and it definitely feels like we're on
- 25:11Speaker 3: the downward trend here. So I'm I'm paying last year's
- 25:14Speaker 3: numbers and I'm saying that we're probably getting an offset
- 25:19Speaker 3: between situation and age curve. Do we end up in
- 25:23Speaker 3: a similar situation to twenty five for me?
- 25:26Speaker 2: So not a.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Downfall of Garcia here, but I'm looking at him as
- 25:31Speaker 3: a back end option.
- 25:33Speaker 2: For the outfield.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so too. I think it is like
- 25:36Speaker 1: a fifth starter and a twelve teamer where I'm not
- 25:39Speaker 1: going to invest too much and he's going to be
- 25:41Speaker 1: the first guy who gets jettisoned if there is somebody
- 25:44Speaker 1: who is breaking out early in camp or breaking out
- 25:47Speaker 1: early in the season, because I think, yeah, you're pretty
- 25:50Speaker 1: much gonna be in the range of like twenty homers,
- 25:53Speaker 1: ten Storlem bases and very low by patting hamrhickch for
- 25:56Speaker 1: Dolis Garcia, I just don't see it really bouncing back
- 26:00Speaker 1: with the plate approach, and you can just see it
- 26:03Speaker 1: breaks down further and further the older they get. So
- 26:05Speaker 1: I think we're relatively on the same page there.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Next signing we have is Hasiung Kim re signing in
- 26:12Speaker 1: Atlanta after I mean, he had turned down an option
- 26:15Speaker 1: that we both thought he was going to pick up,
- 26:17Speaker 1: and we're kind of perplexed why he didn't because it
- 26:21Speaker 1: worked out for him one year twenty million dollars from
- 26:23Speaker 1: of the Braves to reprove himself. He had a rough
- 26:26Speaker 1: season last year. It was only forty eight games and
- 26:28Speaker 1: an eighty two WRC plus with the Rays and the Braves,
- 26:31Speaker 1: mostly because he was working his way back from a
- 26:33Speaker 1: gnarly off season shoulder surgery. From twenty twenty four to
- 26:37Speaker 1: twenty twenty five. This should be a guy where I
- 26:40Speaker 1: mean Steamer has him set for about a two forty
- 26:43Speaker 1: five average, fourteen homers, twenty three stone bases. Also, just
- 26:47Speaker 1: this is a fun signing from like a non fantasy perspective,
- 26:50Speaker 1: because one he reunites with his best friend Jerkson Profar
- 26:54Speaker 1: back down in Atlanta to the the Braves like immediately
- 26:59Speaker 1: announced Bobblehead Night for has Sun Kim right after signing him,
- 27:03Speaker 1: So they had it he was gonna be back in Atlanta.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I think, no matter what, that's probably why he turned
- 27:09Speaker 1: down the option and knew that he had this twenty
- 27:12Speaker 1: million dollars on the table to reprove himself should be
- 27:15Speaker 1: the full time shortstop in Atlanta. There's nothing else coming
- 27:18Speaker 1: for him in that system. You know, they had Riso
- 27:21Speaker 1: du Bond slated there as they. Nick Allen played shortstop
- 27:25Speaker 1: pretty much all of last year for the Braves after
- 27:28Speaker 1: Orlando Rcia left for Colorado. So here we've got an
- 27:32Speaker 1: intriguing name who you know you look at back at
- 27:35Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, twenty twenty three was a stolen base
- 27:38Speaker 1: fiend for us in fantasy. What are you doing with
- 27:41Speaker 1: Hastin and Kim going into twenty twenty six and do
- 27:44Speaker 1: you think that there is a chance he finds a
- 27:47Speaker 1: little bit of that power stroke that he had back
- 27:48Speaker 1: in KBO because the shoulders fixed another year.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I really like how some Kim going
- 27:56Speaker 3: into twenty twenty six. A big part is I think
- 28:00Speaker 3: the price is gonna be pretty low. This sign he
- 28:03Speaker 3: might impact it a little bit because they they give
- 28:04Speaker 3: him a pretty hefty pay ding.
- 28:07Speaker 2: But I do think that he's a guy that.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Kind of fell off radars last year and really even
- 28:13Speaker 3: when he was kind of getting healthy, people weren't really
- 28:14Speaker 3: giving him a whole lot of runway. And you know,
- 28:18Speaker 3: the intangible for me beyond just like look at what
- 28:20Speaker 3: he's done in his history. He'll he's a ten to
- 28:22Speaker 3: fifteen homeer guy, twenty to thirty stolen bases, hit two fifty. Like,
- 28:27Speaker 3: I think you can lock that in and I think
- 28:29Speaker 3: you can easily put that as a middle infielder or
- 28:31Speaker 3: you know, kind of the back of the back of
- 28:34Speaker 3: the lineup for you know, a shortstop pretty easily in
- 28:38Speaker 3: my book. But the Braves are a very well respected
- 28:42Speaker 3: organization for talent development and talent identification, and the fact
- 28:46Speaker 3: that they like traded for this guy or picked him
- 28:50Speaker 3: up not even trade for him, just picked him up,
- 28:52Speaker 3: willing to pay the whole the whole bill, offered him
- 28:55Speaker 3: the the option, and then really went in then and
- 29:00Speaker 3: resigning from even more in free agency tells me that
- 29:02Speaker 3: they believe in him a heck of a lot, or
- 29:04Speaker 3: also had a massive hole in the lineup. Both can
- 29:07Speaker 3: be true, and so I look at all of that,
- 29:09Speaker 3: like Sigence point to, like there's a lot of upside here,
- 29:13Speaker 3: and he's always been a guy, like I said, I
- 29:15Speaker 3: had more power in the KBO, did great steiling bases,
- 29:18Speaker 3: and it's not hard to imagine they co a twenty
- 29:21Speaker 3: thirty season or even a twenty forty season just creeping
- 29:25Speaker 3: out with a little bit of luck. Because he has
- 29:26Speaker 3: great plate discipline. I think people forget that, Like he
- 29:29Speaker 3: gets on base, he does all these little things right
- 29:32Speaker 3: and is a good glove like all those things play.
- 29:34Speaker 3: So I think he's gonna be a sneaky, sneaky good
- 29:37Speaker 3: value this year for fantasy owners.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so too, And we could see those
- 29:42Speaker 1: counting stats really take a boost because this Atlanta lineup
- 29:47Speaker 1: is pretty dangerous, I think, and it's gonna be a
- 29:50Speaker 1: really tough contender for the NL East because on top
- 29:54Speaker 1: of it, they've got a lot of pitching stacked up too,
- 29:56Speaker 1: so it's gonna be fascinating to see what that offense
- 29:59Speaker 1: can do that they're home and back at full force
- 30:02Speaker 1: with Ron zu Kunya back. Okay, next signing, let's go
- 30:05Speaker 1: to a frosty Minnesota because everybody's least favorite corner infield
- 30:10Speaker 1: option for fantasy. Josh Bell signed a one year deal
- 30:13Speaker 1: to play first base there. They had an opening, I
- 30:16Speaker 1: mean it was occupied by Cody Clemens, who was getting
- 30:19Speaker 1: some chatter for like, you know, if he could run
- 30:21Speaker 1: all the way through with that first base job in Minnesota,
- 30:24Speaker 1: considering the qualifications he has position eligibility wise, that would
- 30:28Speaker 1: have been nice. But Josh Bell is I mean, this
- 30:33Speaker 1: is the most steady profile over the past five years.
- 30:35Speaker 1: It's like a one ten. It's steady and boring. It's
- 30:38Speaker 1: like a one ten WORC plus two fifty average twenty
- 30:41Speaker 1: homers and like sixty five ish runs and seventy five
- 30:47Speaker 1: ish RBI. Although I did notice this in the second
- 30:50Speaker 1: half of last year because he cropped up when I
- 30:53Speaker 1: was doing lots of work for my Waiver Wire column
- 30:56Speaker 1: that he was hot in the second half of last
- 30:58Speaker 1: year where he put up a pretty solid fifty six
- 31:02Speaker 1: games with eleven homers and two sixty seven average. I
- 31:04Speaker 1: mean probably won some leagues out there because first base
- 31:07Speaker 1: was just such a black hole that Josh Bell was
- 31:10Speaker 1: a very serviceable player for fantasy down the stretch. What
- 31:14Speaker 1: are you doing with him? Is he still that boring
- 31:16Speaker 1: last ditch corner infield option or did that second half
- 31:20Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five show you maybe Josh Bell might
- 31:23Speaker 1: be finding what we always had hope for him.
- 31:27Speaker 3: I'm not there for the second piece. I think Josh
- 31:30Speaker 3: Bell's a streaky hitter. I think things can go well
- 31:32Speaker 3: for a while and they can go poor for a while.
- 31:35Speaker 3: And you know, we're basically like four straight years of
- 31:38Speaker 3: the same exact guy, and moving from Washington to Minnesota
- 31:43Speaker 3: is not much different from a ballpark or a lineup perspective,
- 31:47Speaker 3: Like I think you can chock it up to like
- 31:49Speaker 3: this is the exact same guy gonna happen again now
- 31:52Speaker 3: said He's a very very intriguing, like reserve round kind
- 31:55Speaker 3: of guy. Like if you kind of punt the position
- 31:58Speaker 3: because things don't go well for you in the draft
- 32:01Speaker 3: and you fall back onto Josh Bell, like there's there's
- 32:04Speaker 3: way worse fallbacks, And I think that's what actually is
- 32:06Speaker 3: intriguing about him is that you know, some things don't
- 32:09Speaker 3: work out for you in the draft, and you're gonna
- 32:11Speaker 3: rely on this guy while other things happen, and if
- 32:14Speaker 3: you have to cut him later, no big deal. But
- 32:16Speaker 3: he's not gonna, like entirely sink you because he's gonna,
- 32:19Speaker 3: you know, set and he delivers some productions.
- 32:21Speaker 2: So I'm not excited.
- 32:23Speaker 3: I'm not targeting him, but like if he ends up
- 32:25Speaker 3: on my team because I made a mistake on the draft,
- 32:27Speaker 3: I'm not too mad about it.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I'm right there with you. So I think,
- 32:32Speaker 1: especially if you're in a draft and whole situations, it's
- 32:34Speaker 1: not a bad idea because he's gonna play some first
- 32:37Speaker 1: base and c I for you at some point during
- 32:39Speaker 1: the season when you run into injuries. Okay, we're gonna
- 32:42Speaker 1: stick in the Al Central. Because Lane Thomas signed with
- 32:45Speaker 1: the Kansas City Royals, and I don't know what it
- 32:48Speaker 1: is about the Royals and just never wanting to field
- 32:50Speaker 1: any outfielder just but they're doing it again and Lane
- 32:54Speaker 1: Thomas is entering the NIX, which forces us to talk
- 32:56Speaker 1: about him for fantasy. He's thirty years old, coming off
- 33:00Speaker 1: a terrible, terrible season forty eight WRC plus over thirty
- 33:04Speaker 1: nine games that he was just really banged up. But
- 33:07Speaker 1: do remember in twenty twenty four between Washington and Cleveland,
- 33:11Speaker 1: he stole thirty two bases. Twenty twenty three was a
- 33:14Speaker 1: crazy breakout year, twenty eight homers, twenty stolen bases, one
- 33:17Speaker 1: hundred and one runs. Any hope here for Lane Thomas
- 33:20Speaker 1: in Kansas City. I know, I'm sorry.
- 33:25Speaker 3: I just don't see it like I mean, we have
- 33:29Speaker 3: discussions about him when he was in Washington and how
- 33:33Speaker 3: terrible this was going to be when he left Washington,
- 33:36Speaker 3: and then he went to Cleveland and it was exactly
- 33:37Speaker 3: what we expected. And I don't think anything's anything different.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Like he had a few years where things worked out
- 33:43Speaker 3: really well for him, the kind of middling profile on
- 33:46Speaker 3: a team that was kind of up and coming, but
- 33:48Speaker 3: more of a volume play and didn't care if he
- 33:50Speaker 3: got thrown out while running worked really well. But again,
- 33:53Speaker 3: this is a guy they got thrown out fourteen times
- 33:57Speaker 3: in the twenty twenty fourth season will stealing bases. That's
- 34:02Speaker 3: just not ideal. And then what a shocker when he's
- 34:04Speaker 3: on a different team. He didn't run because he's not
- 34:07Speaker 3: a good stealing bases, and so when you do that
- 34:09Speaker 3: and your power's kind of dropped off, your polate discipline
- 34:12Speaker 3: is kind of dropped away, like there's not much left.
- 34:14Speaker 3: So yeah, maybe maybe I'm wrong, maybe comes back, But
- 34:17Speaker 3: like I have pretty high confidence here that Lane Thomas
- 34:20Speaker 3: is not even worth rostering in fantasy leagues.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I'm right there with you, even in
- 34:26Speaker 1: ale only like it. I think it can hurt you
- 34:29Speaker 1: more than it could help you at the end of
- 34:30Speaker 1: the day because he's just kind of hanging out on
- 34:32Speaker 1: your roster. All right, let's talk about another guy who
- 34:35Speaker 1: might be in that vein to see whether or not
- 34:37Speaker 1: you are in on this transaction or your quittnam Our.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Saint Louis Cardinals signed Dustin May, who slots is the
- 34:43Speaker 1: number two starter right now in that rotation. It was
- 34:46Speaker 1: a rough season last year, one hundred and thirty two
- 34:49Speaker 1: and a third innings between the Dodgers and the Red
- 34:51Speaker 1: Sox with a four to ninety six RA, a four
- 34:55Speaker 1: eighty eight FIP, a ground ball rate that disintegrated on
- 34:59Speaker 1: him from I mean, he didn't pitch any of twenty
- 35:01Speaker 1: twenty fours. He's recovering from Tommy John. But that was
- 35:04Speaker 1: kind of the one thing you could rely on with
- 35:07Speaker 1: Dustin May was just the turbo sinker. Limited number of
- 35:10Speaker 1: homers at his peak, you know, twenty twenty and twenty
- 35:13Speaker 1: twenty one or a little fluky in that aspect. But
- 35:17Speaker 1: this guy with all the arms and the legs six
- 35:20Speaker 1: six one eighty and you know, twenty pounds of that
- 35:23Speaker 1: one eighty is in his curly red hair that it
- 35:27Speaker 1: looks fun when it's working. But we haven't seen it
- 35:31Speaker 1: very often. I will say I am encouraged that he
- 35:34Speaker 1: put up one hundred and thirty two innings last year
- 35:36Speaker 1: to show that he was healthy. Twenty eight years old,
- 35:40Speaker 1: lands in a great ballpark with the Saint Louis Cardinals,
- 35:43Speaker 1: should have a solid defense behind him, a pretty decent
- 35:46Speaker 1: pitching organization. You taking any dart throws on Dustin May.
- 35:52Speaker 3: I have a hard time taking dart throws in estimate, Like,
- 35:55Speaker 3: at the end of the day, he can be electric.
- 35:58Speaker 3: We've seen it before, but he's had so many injury issues.
- 36:02Speaker 3: I just we didn't see it last year, even the
- 36:04Speaker 3: one hundred and thirty some innings and I think that's
- 36:06Speaker 3: where I'm a little little nervous. I think this is
- 36:08Speaker 3: a brilliant move for the Cardinals because they have nothing
- 36:10Speaker 3: to lose, and also one of the funniest contract designs
- 36:13Speaker 3: if you've actually looked at it. The fact that he
- 36:15Speaker 3: has a musual option for twenty million the next year
- 36:18Speaker 3: is the absolute last thing will ever be exercised on
- 36:21Speaker 3: either side because if he does well enough to justify
- 36:25Speaker 3: that for the team, he's going to the market. If
- 36:27Speaker 3: he doesn't, team's like that, that's never gonna happen. So
- 36:30Speaker 3: I just thought that was hilarious.
- 36:31Speaker 1: But she's dealt in. The new team's not accepting that anyway. Yeah,
- 36:35Speaker 1: exactly any good Saint Louis is sending him right out
- 36:37Speaker 1: the door.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Exactly, But so brilliant move with them because it's a
- 36:40Speaker 3: it's a low risk, hy reward type situation. But Saint
- 36:46Speaker 3: Louis has also not shown that they can really develop
- 36:48Speaker 3: the young pictures at this point, and I don't think
- 36:51Speaker 3: he's going to come in there and all of a
- 36:52Speaker 3: sudden change things are now. So I think he's a
- 36:55Speaker 3: watch guy for me. We know that the talent's been
- 36:58Speaker 3: there in the past, but even for a guy that
- 37:01Speaker 3: likes the injured pictures that had all the histories he's
- 37:05Speaker 3: in that like Walker Buehler, Shane McClanahan kind of discussion
- 37:09Speaker 3: for me of like, this guy once was amazing, but
- 37:11Speaker 3: I have no idea what I'm getting, so I probably
- 37:14Speaker 3: should sit on the sidelines.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree, And I mean this guy is
- 37:18Speaker 1: just I mean it's almost like Miles Michaelis or Andre Polante.
- 37:23Speaker 1: It's just not a great profile with enough strikeouts, enough
- 37:27Speaker 1: upside right now that if he does find old Dustin May,
- 37:31Speaker 1: like from three injuries ago or whatever, then maybe, But
- 37:34Speaker 1: until then, I mean you're gonna stream him at home
- 37:36Speaker 1: against the Pirates and stuff when we get into the
- 37:38Speaker 1: fantasy season.
- 37:39Speaker 2: But that's the use case.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Yeah, give me twenty twenty two to twenty twenty one
- 37:44Speaker 3: Dustin May.
- 37:46Speaker 2: I'm all, I'm game.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Yes, Okay. Well, we've got another picture to talk about,
- 37:51Speaker 1: and this one is a returnee back from the NPB
- 37:55Speaker 1: Forrest Griffin, who used to be with the Royals in
- 37:58Speaker 1: the Blue Jays before going over to MPB and pitching
- 38:03Speaker 1: with Tokyo I believe the Giants, right, and so he
- 38:07Speaker 1: had a fantastic season an eighty eight K nine over
- 38:13Speaker 1: seventy eight innings with a one to sixty two RA
- 38:16Speaker 1: solid ground ball right round forty nine percent. And this
- 38:20Speaker 1: is a guy who I mean, he signed a one year,
- 38:23Speaker 1: five and a half million dollar contract with the Nationals.
- 38:25Speaker 2: He's a lefty.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Southpaw thirty years old. Should be getting a chance at
- 38:29Speaker 1: the rotation because he kind of, like everybody else, has
- 38:33Speaker 1: kind of picked up a new retool of arsenal while
- 38:36Speaker 1: he's been over there. But we do also need to
- 38:39Speaker 1: keep in mind as we're looking at some of these
- 38:40Speaker 1: stats coming across that in Japan, they're going through a
- 38:44Speaker 1: foul period of offensive production. So I don't know if
- 38:47Speaker 1: it's the ball or just the league overall and the
- 38:50Speaker 1: dynamic as you know, better and better hitters have been
- 38:52Speaker 1: coming over from Japan back back to America and MLB,
- 38:56Speaker 1: but it is a very much pitching environment. Even with
- 39:00Speaker 1: that said, Steamer has him slated for one hundred and
- 39:02Speaker 1: forty three innings as of a three ninety two e RA.
- 39:04Speaker 1: A little bad that is because of mixing in relief
- 39:08Speaker 1: versus starting, but that would make him a serviceable starter
- 39:13Speaker 1: for fantasy overall. You know, maybe like a seven and
- 39:16Speaker 1: a half k nine, but still you'll get the job done.
- 39:20Speaker 1: And like I said, you'll stream that against like the
- 39:22Speaker 1: Marlins or something. Are you interested in Griffin for that
- 39:25Speaker 1: purpose or do you think there's more or less here?
- 39:28Speaker 3: I think this is a really sneaky fun one that
- 39:32Speaker 3: there might be more because we're talking about he did
- 39:35Speaker 3: have three seasons of strong results over overseas, and you
- 39:42Speaker 3: know he had a little injury issues this last year.
- 39:44Speaker 3: But we're talking full twenty start seasons, which is what
- 39:48Speaker 3: you get over there e ras basically three and under
- 39:52Speaker 3: and even the underlying stats showing they should have been
- 39:54Speaker 3: better like low two's and they get again this this
- 39:57Speaker 3: last year with one sixty two e RA supported by
- 40:00Speaker 3: one seventy eight. So like it looks good, walks are
- 40:03Speaker 3: are low, keeps smalling the ground. You know. Really the
- 40:06Speaker 3: biggest reason he's not getting like the Cody Ponce kind
- 40:10Speaker 3: of excitement is.
- 40:12Speaker 2: He doesn't throw as hard. He's more of a control guy.
- 40:14Speaker 3: He's more of a kind of a picture on the
- 40:16Speaker 3: edge of skuy But like gives me like diet Shane
- 40:19Speaker 3: Bieber vibes to a degree, And I think you know
- 40:24Speaker 3: he's gonna be in Washington people are gonna be come
- 40:27Speaker 3: down on that because of that, which, yeah, from a
- 40:29Speaker 3: wins perspective, not gonna help him.
- 40:30Speaker 2: But I think this is a.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Guy that you might get sneaky surprised and he might
- 40:35Speaker 3: end up providing some good some good value, good ratios
- 40:40Speaker 3: that kind of bolsters a back end of a rotation.
- 40:44Speaker 2: From a fancy perspective, It's kind.
- 40:45Speaker 3: Of like the Nathan and Valdis story before last year
- 40:49Speaker 3: of how he's just valuable and you can just keep
- 40:51Speaker 3: plugging him in for a low cost.
- 40:52Speaker 2: I like it.
- 40:53Speaker 3: I'm not saying that he's gonna, you know, break the
- 40:56Speaker 3: bank and he's be the next big thing, but I
- 40:59Speaker 3: think Foster Griffin could bring a mid to high threes
- 41:02Speaker 3: era and he could you know, maybe seek out ten wins,
- 41:07Speaker 3: maybe eight k per nine type of thing and a
- 41:10Speaker 3: low whip. So I think there's value there kind of
- 41:14Speaker 3: at the back of a rotation, and I think it's
- 41:16Speaker 3: going to be pretty gush, aren't cheap?
- 41:18Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's going to be a wide left arsenal
- 41:20Speaker 1: that I think that there's going to be quite a
- 41:22Speaker 1: bit of viability for him, where I think almost like
- 41:25Speaker 1: a not last year in tr Heeny, but maybe like
- 41:27Speaker 1: two years ago Andrew Heeny, where you know somebody who's
- 41:30Speaker 1: on the fringe of a twelve teamer something where it's
- 41:33Speaker 1: a little more dependable on a fifteen teamer. But yeah,
- 41:35Speaker 1: he's going to have plenty of use cases out there
- 41:37Speaker 1: Forrest Griffin, so I'm certainly starring him. I also was
- 41:41Speaker 1: pro Anthony k last week, so you knew I was
- 41:44Speaker 1: going to be pro Forrest Griffin.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Basically, we will take any picture that is a four
- 41:49Speaker 3: way through Japan.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems like it. Maybe it's a something that
- 41:54Speaker 1: we need to check.
- 41:55Speaker 3: This is your I take the injured guys. You just
- 41:57Speaker 3: take the guys that pitched overseas.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Be it.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that might be a little bit of what we're
- 42:02Speaker 1: working with. Okay, well, let's talk about one more signing
- 42:05Speaker 1: another pitcher who's going to be kind of on that
- 42:07Speaker 1: fringe that we've talked about with May and Griffin. Here
- 42:10Speaker 1: we're talking Adrian Hauser, who signed a two year, twenty
- 42:13Speaker 1: two million dollars deal with a club option with the
- 42:16Speaker 1: San Francisco Giants. Should anchor the back actually, I mean
- 42:20Speaker 1: he's slate as the number three starter or not right now,
- 42:23Speaker 1: so maybe not the back end. Maybe the solid middle
- 42:26Speaker 1: for the Giants. It was a pretty solid season for Houser,
- 42:30Speaker 1: who especially for the White Sox the two ten era
- 42:33Speaker 1: sixty eight and two thirds innings with a six and
- 42:36Speaker 1: two record. It came out of nowhere. They flipped him
- 42:38Speaker 1: at the deadline to the Rays, where he regressed, but
- 42:41Speaker 1: the overall kind of profile stayed right in the wheelhouse.
- 42:46Speaker 1: What you're looking for from Adrian Hauser, which is kind
- 42:48Speaker 1: of like a four low four FIP and you know,
- 42:53Speaker 1: strikeouts that hover around seven and you're just kind of
- 42:56Speaker 1: working the outs to be able to grind out some
- 42:58Speaker 1: innings and wins. I love the landing spot here for
- 43:01Speaker 1: San Francisco because he's an automatic streamer at home every time.
- 43:05Speaker 1: But other than that, maybe not useful, but still that's
- 43:08Speaker 1: got utility and fantasy.
- 43:09Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 43:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I was thinking, you know, an i'll only streamer
- 43:13Speaker 3: situation is what you have here. He doesn't he's not
- 43:16Speaker 3: the strikeout guy enough to and he's not going to
- 43:19Speaker 3: go deep up in games to really bring a lot
- 43:21Speaker 3: of other value. But to your point, situational things like that,
- 43:24Speaker 3: he's not going to also be a guy that blows
- 43:26Speaker 3: up on you, which is to say something, so I, yeah,
- 43:29Speaker 3: spot start those kind of things, but not a whole
- 43:31Speaker 3: lot more here.
- 43:33Speaker 1: All right, Well, we've got a couple of trades to
- 43:35Speaker 1: talk about, so let's get into them, because I think
- 43:38Speaker 1: we've actually this is where there's more at Fantasy intrigued
- 43:41Speaker 1: than maybe anything else but the relievers we've talked about,
- 43:44Speaker 1: because this first trade, this is a fascinating trade, I
- 43:48Speaker 1: think overall, when it broke through the waiver wires, or
- 43:51Speaker 1: not the waiver wires, the news wires. As the Brewers
- 43:56Speaker 1: and the Royals met up to trade from Milwaukee, Isaac Collins,
- 44:02Speaker 1: who you know, just came off of a great campaign
- 44:04Speaker 1: for them, finished fourth I believe in the National League
- 44:08Speaker 1: Rookie of the Year voting, and came out of nowhere,
- 44:11Speaker 1: was a Rule five pick from the Rockies, and played
- 44:14Speaker 1: plenty for the Brewers, a one to twenty two WRC
- 44:17Speaker 1: plus over one hundred and thirty games, sixteen stolen bases,
- 44:20Speaker 1: two sixty three, three sixty eight, four to eleven slash line,
- 44:24Speaker 1: but really really faded down the stretch. He's a switch hitter.
- 44:27Speaker 1: The Royals are already kind of saying they're going to
- 44:29Speaker 1: use him a lot like Whitt Mirorfield. He came up
- 44:31Speaker 1: as an infielder, so outfield infield option and mostly probably
- 44:36Speaker 1: outfield because we just mentioned the Royals having one of
- 44:40Speaker 1: the worst outfields out there. He went over to Kansas
- 44:43Speaker 1: City with Nick Meers, who should be a middle reliever.
- 44:46Speaker 1: No big kind of discussion points there. The interesting thing
- 44:50Speaker 1: was here the return from Kansas City to Milwaukee, it
- 44:53Speaker 1: was just straight up for lefty on hell. Zerpa, who
- 44:57Speaker 1: has been hanging around now with the Royals for a
- 45:00Speaker 1: handful of years, still twenty six years old, been exclusively
- 45:04Speaker 1: a reliever, well not exclusively. They start a few games
- 45:07Speaker 1: and I think some of those are openers, but mostly
- 45:10Speaker 1: relieving for the Royal since twenty twenty one. And it's
- 45:14Speaker 1: an interesting profile, I will say, because mostly I want
- 45:17Speaker 1: to focus on Zerpa. It was a solid season out
- 45:19Speaker 1: of the pen for him for eighteen rat over, sixty
- 45:23Speaker 1: four and two thirds innings, five and two record, and
- 45:25Speaker 1: eight K nine. But you actually look at it's a
- 45:29Speaker 1: great ground ball rate. The stuff is fantastic, The slider
- 45:33Speaker 1: and sinker great. The fastball is just kind of a
- 45:36Speaker 1: get me over fastball, but the slider and sinker are nasty.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Brewer's already talking about converting Zurpa into a starter. He
- 45:43Speaker 1: is going to turn twenty seven late next year, so
- 45:48Speaker 1: he's right in kind of like this window of this
- 45:52Speaker 1: is the type of player that the Milwaukee Brewers just
- 45:54Speaker 1: convert into like a number two starter out of nowhere.
- 45:56Speaker 1: They've been doing this for years. That's why I'm interested
- 45:59Speaker 1: here in because I think he could be like a
- 46:02Speaker 1: pretty solid starter with like an upper three es RA
- 46:06Speaker 1: and an eight k per nine. Just I know I'm
- 46:09Speaker 1: putting a lot of faith in Milwaukee's pitching development here,
- 46:11Speaker 1: but they just gave up a pretty nice little package
- 46:15Speaker 1: to get Zurpa, and I don't think that that's for nothing.
- 46:18Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 46:20Speaker 3: Yeah, this is a this is the hard one and
- 46:22Speaker 3: this is where you have to go beyond the numbers.
- 46:24Speaker 3: So as I look at both both sides here, like
- 46:27Speaker 3: I have the same reaction like not too exciting, Collins,
- 46:29Speaker 3: maybe there's a little something you might want to keep,
- 46:31Speaker 3: you know, pay attention to Zerpa was interesting.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Because why did they do this?
- 46:35Speaker 3: Why did they pay so much for this middle reliever
- 46:39Speaker 3: that's seemingly not like overly exciting, And it's not like
- 46:44Speaker 3: they need to save money here.
- 46:45Speaker 2: This is not what they were doing.
- 46:47Speaker 3: So it's very interesting to see if this experiment that
- 46:52Speaker 3: they seem to want to go on works because he
- 46:54Speaker 3: doesn't really have split issues. You know, he's been used
- 46:58Speaker 3: against lefties and righties, Like doesn't definitely use a different
- 47:02Speaker 3: pitch mixing against him. He's he definitely, uh, you know,
- 47:05Speaker 3: relies on that sinker pretty heavily against the lefties, not
- 47:08Speaker 3: so much on the righties. But like, I have a
- 47:12Speaker 3: hard time see like what's really gonna play here. But
- 47:15Speaker 3: the Brewers are really good at developing pitchers, They're really
- 47:18Speaker 3: good at getting the next thing out of them, and
- 47:21Speaker 3: that ground ball rate is just tantalizing. I think that's
- 47:24Speaker 3: the thing that plays out. So I'm I'm not not
- 47:27Speaker 3: drafting him, but I'm watching him because I think if
- 47:31Speaker 3: you know, they really turned they found something here and
- 47:33Speaker 3: they make a tweak or two, it's not gonna be
- 47:36Speaker 3: the first time that they that they did that and
- 47:38Speaker 3: brought somebody out of nowhere.
- 47:39Speaker 2: So interesting trade.
- 47:41Speaker 3: I'm gonna sit on the sidelines on this one, but
- 47:42Speaker 3: I think zerp But to your point, is the more
- 47:44Speaker 3: interesting piece of this one that might be something that
- 47:46Speaker 3: we're talking about later in the season of why didn't
- 47:49Speaker 3: we see this coming?
- 47:50Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 47:50Speaker 1: And I mostly also want to throw it out because,
- 47:52Speaker 1: like I said, people are gonna start getting into drafting
- 47:54Speaker 1: holes and DC's over the next couple of weeks, and
- 47:58Speaker 1: Zurpa is a great kind of like last to pick
- 48:00Speaker 1: dart throw because I think the Brewers are going to
- 48:03Speaker 1: find a role for him that he's either going to
- 48:05Speaker 1: be a high leverage lefty or a solid rotation piece
- 48:09Speaker 1: for them. So he's got the pieces to put it
- 48:11Speaker 1: together and hopefully Milwaukee can chart that path for him. Okay,
- 48:15Speaker 1: last trade we have. It's a swap of minor league pitchers,
- 48:19Speaker 1: which you don't see this very often, as the Red
- 48:21Speaker 1: Sox and the Nationals met up in both delt. I
- 48:25Speaker 1: think they're both top ten for their individual teams, but
- 48:29Speaker 1: different profiles.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Here.
- 48:30Speaker 1: They traded Luis Perals from Boston to Washington for Jake Bennett,
- 48:36Speaker 1: so both of these pitchers were actually at the Arizona
- 48:39Speaker 1: Fall League.
- 48:40Speaker 2: We discussed.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Jake Bennett just the other week with our friends or
- 48:45Speaker 1: I did with our friends Dynasty Baseball Pickups when we
- 48:49Speaker 1: went into some of the discussion from the Fall League
- 48:53Speaker 1: back in episode one sixteen. So check that out because
- 48:56Speaker 1: I think you're looking at a pretty much major league
- 48:59Speaker 1: ready back to the rotation starter and Jake Bennett, but
- 49:02Speaker 1: just the type of picture that you and I like,
- 49:04Speaker 1: where good ground balls, good control, huge frame where you
- 49:09Speaker 1: can certainly see the Red Sox being abill to coax
- 49:12Speaker 1: more out of it. Los Paralys goes over to Washington
- 49:15Speaker 1: where this dude is a flamethrower, where if he doesn't
- 49:20Speaker 1: work as a starter, he's he's a little tiny like
- 49:23Speaker 1: Pedro Martinez guy, he's six one, one sixty, but wow,
- 49:26Speaker 1: does he absolutely rip the ball and also sometimes doesn't
- 49:30Speaker 1: exactly know where it's going. So certainly higher upset I
- 49:34Speaker 1: think for Paralys because like, if he puts it all together,
- 49:37Speaker 1: the strikeouts, you're looking at double digit K nine, really
- 49:40Speaker 1: high end octane stuff, but more likely bound for probably
- 49:44Speaker 1: a closer role that like that's the other option is
- 49:47Speaker 1: maybe there is nothing in Washington at the back end
- 49:50Speaker 1: of that bullpen. Uh, but Bennett's probably got more major
- 49:54Speaker 1: league utility because he is closer and that Boston team
- 49:58Speaker 1: is really good at pitching development. So what are your
- 50:01Speaker 1: thoughts here on Jake Bennett, Lewis Parles and they're landing
- 50:04Speaker 1: spots here in Washington and Boston.
- 50:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I think this this is a very interesting one
- 50:10Speaker 3: because it's too value valuable, but like two legitimate prospects
- 50:15Speaker 3: that should deliver major league value this year and they
- 50:19Speaker 3: couldn't be further apart in like.
- 50:22Speaker 2: Style and spectrum of what they're going to do.
- 50:25Speaker 3: Bennett is kind of what's seemingly become like the prototypical
- 50:30Speaker 3: kind of thing you want to look for in a picture,
- 50:33Speaker 3: especially from a lefty, which is control ground balls and
- 50:37Speaker 3: a big body. That's kind of what you've been looking for.
- 50:40Speaker 3: And yeah, the strikeout numbers aren't quite there, but it
- 50:44Speaker 3: feels like that's something that can still be developed in
- 50:47Speaker 3: these really big lefties over time. And so that one
- 50:51Speaker 3: that one's intriguing now being in Boston with that rotation
- 50:55Speaker 3: where they just keep bringing everybody in. I'm not I
- 50:58Speaker 3: don't know where he breaks through, but this might be
- 51:01Speaker 3: more of a little bit long term bullpen arm to
- 51:03Speaker 3: start longer relief and then maybe sees how things go.
- 51:07Speaker 3: But like, this feels like they're kind of Garrett Wit
- 51:10Speaker 3: locked in or how kind of like guy that they
- 51:13Speaker 3: they really like, and they're gonna make some tweaks too,
- 51:15Speaker 3: and then perhaps on the other side, like to your point,
- 51:17Speaker 3: like I really high variability outcome, but really really nasty
- 51:22Speaker 3: and so if he figures something out, then this could
- 51:25Speaker 3: be really really fun for the Nationals. But I feel
- 51:28Speaker 3: that like it's maybe a thirty percent chance he figures
- 51:32Speaker 3: it out. I'm not sure what right number to put
- 51:34Speaker 3: on it, but I feel like that's maybe the range
- 51:37Speaker 3: that would I would I would go so Ben, it's
- 51:39Speaker 3: the safe choice. Prows is the sexy, fun and exciting piece,
- 51:43Speaker 3: and I'd probably take be all day.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean, they're both on the forty man
- 51:47Speaker 1: rosters for their team, so I think they're both gonna
- 51:49Speaker 1: have twenty twenty six Fantasy impact. It's just a matter
- 51:52Speaker 1: of when and where that happens both guys. I'm definitely
- 51:56Speaker 1: keeping tabs on during spring training just to see how
- 51:59Speaker 1: they're being used by their teams and where they're stacking
- 52:02Speaker 1: up in terms of rotations and bullpen spots, because I think,
- 52:05Speaker 1: like I said, great arms both of them.
- 52:07Speaker 2: I like both of them.
- 52:08Speaker 1: It's just a matter of kind of where the use
- 52:09Speaker 1: cases on their new teams.
- 52:11Speaker 2: Okay, let's get.
- 52:12Speaker 1: A little bit into the baseball card calendar, because we've
- 52:14Speaker 1: had a few updates. First, we are speaking on December
- 52:18Speaker 1: seventeenth again as a reminder, and not only did Heritage
- 52:21Speaker 1: High Number come out today, but Top's Cosmic Chrome also
- 52:24Speaker 1: came out. We love Cosmic Chrome, but we are going
- 52:28Speaker 1: to skip talking about it and covering it because woof,
- 52:32Speaker 1: I know, we've been talking about like just some of
- 52:35Speaker 1: these products this year being tough investments, and honestly, it's
- 52:39Speaker 1: a really really difficult way to kind of forge your
- 52:44Speaker 1: forge ahead as a collector because you're writing lottery tickets
- 52:48Speaker 1: essentially cosmic chrome, you're not even guaranteed to hit in
- 52:51Speaker 1: the box that you're buying secondary market, I think, and
- 52:55Speaker 1: it's really the only place you're going to be able
- 52:56Speaker 1: to buy it because it's such a popular site. It's
- 52:58Speaker 1: going for around five hundred and fifty bucks. But they
- 53:01Speaker 1: are gorgeous, gorgeous cards.
- 53:04Speaker 4: Just stick to the singles market on it though, right, Yeah,
- 53:07Speaker 4: just stick to the singles here, like they're gonna be
- 53:09Speaker 4: I mean, they're gonna be a little more expensive because
- 53:11Speaker 4: everybody's trying to recoup what they just spent to pull
- 53:14Speaker 4: the base cards here.
- 53:15Speaker 3: They are fun, they are eclectic. There everything we love
- 53:19Speaker 3: about cards takes us back to the nineties all that
- 53:21Speaker 3: kind of fun stuff. But yeah, stick to the singles
- 53:24Speaker 3: don't don't. Don't be ripping here because it is a
- 53:27Speaker 3: lose lose proposition.
- 53:29Speaker 2: Yes exactly.
- 53:30Speaker 1: And we had Panini Flawless twenty twenty five kind of
- 53:32Speaker 1: floating in space for a long time. I think it
- 53:34Speaker 1: released today. I didn't check, but the calendar that I
- 53:37Speaker 1: looked at yesterday he said it was supposed to drop today.
- 53:39Speaker 1: It'd been honestly like kind of on our calendar kick
- 53:42Speaker 1: around since like July or something. So if you're into.
- 53:45Speaker 2: Panini Flawless, I think it's out today.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Then we've got next week coming out. Tops Black and
- 53:49Speaker 1: White Baseball Tops five Star is coming out right before
- 53:53Speaker 1: the end of the year on the twenty ninth.
- 53:55Speaker 2: That just got added.
- 53:57Speaker 1: And then we had Bowman Draft Tops Museum Collection go
- 54:01Speaker 1: on the TBD schedule. As both those pre orders are
- 54:03Speaker 1: coming up soon. Good luck getting a Bowman Draft pre
- 54:07Speaker 1: order to go through on tops dot com unless you're
- 54:10Speaker 1: some sort of wizard at hacking websites, because that stuff
- 54:13Speaker 1: disappears fast. Museum a collection a little more attainable, obtainable,
- 54:17Speaker 1: but that is something that people still will buy out
- 54:20Speaker 1: pretty quickly on pre order. But I wanted to throw
- 54:22Speaker 1: that out there because I'm impressed at Tops and fanatics
- 54:26Speaker 1: and Panini have delivered on the schedule, the ambitious schedule
- 54:29Speaker 1: they set up for themselves in December, and so gonna
- 54:32Speaker 1: be lots of well maybe not happy when they rip
- 54:35Speaker 1: open the box, but happy collectors that got their packages
- 54:38Speaker 1: in time for the holidays.
- 54:40Speaker 3: Absolutely, I think there's some fun stuff here love five Star,
- 54:43Speaker 3: Love museum collections or some fun things. Flawless is actually
- 54:46Speaker 3: just went on the Patini website and doesn't this ys
- 54:48Speaker 3: coming soon, So I don't know if they actually got
- 54:50Speaker 3: that one out or it's sold out immediately. I'm not
- 54:53Speaker 3: quite sure, but it's it is fun, fun number of
- 54:57Speaker 3: sets coming out here. We'll get it talk about here
- 55:00Speaker 3: in this is the New year rule.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Yesund one day, twenty twenty five Panini Flawless, we will
- 55:04Speaker 1: see you in action, but until then we are going
- 55:07Speaker 1: to take a quick break. We'll be back after that
- 55:10Speaker 1: break to talk about twenty twenty five Tops Heritage High Number.
- 55:32Speaker 1: All right, welcome back, everybody. We are just going to
- 55:34Speaker 1: dive right into it. We're going to talk the release
- 55:37Speaker 1: of twenty twenty five Tops Heritage High Number from TOPS,
- 55:42Speaker 1: which hit shelves everywhere today Wednesday, December seventeenth. This we're talking,
- 55:47Speaker 1: so you'll probably be hearing this on a little bit
- 55:49Speaker 1: of a delay, but don't worry. This set is available
- 55:53Speaker 1: everywhere that it's one of the more affordable ones, which
- 55:56Speaker 1: I think is kind of nice. It gets back to
- 55:58Speaker 1: some of the things we've talked about out positively with
- 56:02Speaker 1: Tops Holiday that came out a couple months ago, or
- 56:05Speaker 1: if you want to go back to episode eighty eight,
- 56:07Speaker 1: I believe is what it is was when we talked
- 56:09Speaker 1: about this year's Top Heritage release, which the way, if
- 56:13Speaker 1: you're not familiar with Heritage, there's kind of two sets
- 56:16Speaker 1: of it, and the High Number will continue what happened
- 56:20Speaker 1: with the Base Heritage, So it's almost like a Series one,
- 56:23Speaker 1: Series two set up. But Tops Heritage they release in
- 56:27Speaker 1: the spring. Heritage High Number always comes out right around now,
- 56:30Speaker 1: kind of the holidays time, and it continues the rest
- 56:33Speaker 1: of that series. We're looking this time at a two
- 56:36Speaker 1: hundred card set, well two hundred and twenty five card set,
- 56:38Speaker 1: two hundred base cards, twenty five short prints, and so
- 56:43Speaker 1: this kind of mirrors what Tops used to do back
- 56:45Speaker 1: in the seventies where they used to short print the
- 56:47Speaker 1: higher number heritage, or it wasn't heritage back in the day.
- 56:51Speaker 1: It was just regular tops back in the day, but
- 56:53Speaker 1: they used to short print the high numbers, so it
- 56:55Speaker 1: used to be harder to find. And so that's what
- 56:57Speaker 1: we're harkening back to with Heritage, and that's what they
- 57:00Speaker 1: do both in the spring set and the high number
- 57:02Speaker 1: set here in the winter. Same as the set from
- 57:06Speaker 1: the spring, we're looking at the nineteen seventy six throwback design,
- 57:10Speaker 1: which then brings back all of the bi centennial stuff
- 57:13Speaker 1: that happened back in nineteen seventy six, just a little
- 57:16Speaker 1: bit before our heyday. But if you are familiar with that,
- 57:20Speaker 1: the bi centennial is the celebration of two hundred years
- 57:24Speaker 1: of America from seventeen seventy six. So it's peppered throughout
- 57:27Speaker 1: this set is pepper throughout nineteen seventy six tops. I
- 57:30Speaker 1: think we've got a fun little release here on our
- 57:32Speaker 1: hands for Heritage High Number. What stands out to you
- 57:35Speaker 1: as you kind of look at this checklist overall for
- 57:38Speaker 1: twenty twenty five and just your other kind of thoughts
- 57:41Speaker 1: and feelings around tops Heritage and High Number through the years.
- 57:45Speaker 3: Yeah, so if you start with just heritag High Number,
- 57:47Speaker 3: it's it's always a I want to call it a
- 57:49Speaker 3: divisive product, but it's one of those that like either
- 57:51Speaker 3: is a big hit or a big miss, Like from
- 57:53Speaker 3: a overall value perspective, that it holds because it does
- 57:57Speaker 3: really rely on the in of the year rookies meaning something.
- 58:02Speaker 3: And you can find some Heritage hobby boxes out there
- 58:05Speaker 3: for like forty bucks because it's just you're just chasing
- 58:07Speaker 3: Jared Kllnick and nothing else and you're not really chasing
- 58:10Speaker 3: Jared Kellenick. And you know, and I think this one
- 58:13Speaker 3: right now is gonna start pretty hot because again the
- 58:16Speaker 3: Nick Kurtz market and Nick Kurtz is a short print rookie,
- 58:19Speaker 3: and so that's gonna make it leaven a little bit
- 58:21Speaker 3: more enticing for folks. But then I just Heritage is
- 58:25Speaker 3: a set. I just love the old throwback. It's fun
- 58:29Speaker 3: to see the old card designs. I still do love
- 58:31Speaker 3: the card stock that they use, like the old stockile
- 58:34Speaker 3: card stock. There's just something about that that doesn't have
- 58:37Speaker 3: the kind of the same shine and sheen of a
- 58:39Speaker 3: of a modern card. So it's just it's just fun
- 58:41Speaker 3: because of that, and I've always been a fan of
- 58:44Speaker 3: all the kind of oddities of heritage that they like
- 58:47Speaker 3: to to sneak in to it, and they again, it's
- 58:51Speaker 3: it's not it's not as heavy of a printed set
- 58:54Speaker 3: as well. It is more printed that has been but
- 58:57Speaker 3: you're not looking at you know, thousands and thousands of
- 58:59Speaker 3: pairs and things like that. So overall, I'm actually a
- 59:04Speaker 3: fan of a Heritage high number. It is a little
- 59:07Speaker 3: bit more affordable. It is something that's fun to rip
- 59:11Speaker 3: for for folks. So I think it's something I don't
- 59:14Speaker 3: know if i'll jump in this year year, but hey,
- 59:17Speaker 3: you know, if you're you get a chance, it's twenty
- 59:19Speaker 3: four packs in the box, you're you know, guaranteed an autographer,
- 59:23Speaker 3: a relic, guaranteed, quite a few number of chrome cards
- 59:27Speaker 3: or parallels, short prints, all those great kind of things.
- 59:31Speaker 3: So it's it's definitely a product that feels like you
- 59:34Speaker 3: get something.
- 59:35Speaker 2: For for what your pay.
- 59:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think so too. Where you know we're talking,
- 59:40Speaker 1: these hoppy boxes are about one hundred bucks to pop
- 59:43Speaker 1: right now. Honestly, they're still available on tops dot com
- 59:45Speaker 1: and they probably will be for a while. Usually Heritage
- 59:48Speaker 1: High Number hangs out for a while because, like you said,
- 59:51Speaker 1: it's not the biggest hits, but you know, it's not
- 59:54Speaker 1: bad for the price point, and I think it's also
- 59:56Speaker 1: a great kind of set for if you're looking to
- 59:59Speaker 1: break back into card collecting, especially given some of the
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: prices and other issues that we've run into with tops
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: and fanatics over the past couple of years. One hundred
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: bucks for a hobby box. It's pretty clean and easy.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: You're not gonna feel like you got totally taken on
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: this box when you buy it, because you're gonna get
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: the value. Also, like the Heritage I Number, because of
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: the thicker cards, it feels like a more tangible value.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: But also I would say it's one of the sets
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: where people do put the full sets together they collect it.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: It's a very popular set behind flagships, so it's something
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: where you know, I think this Nick Kurtz card, and honestly,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: all the rookies that are hot in the set are
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: all in the short prints, which is a little bit
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: of a rarity. Usually they haven't done that with High Number,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: but I think those cards do usually age well in
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: terms of market value because Heritage is one of the
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: sets where people are like, yeah, that's a good enough
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: rookie card where you know you're not looking at like
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: atops archives or hid or something where it's a little gimmicky.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: Heritage has been around now for about twenty five ish years,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: so it's a it's a pretty big staple in the
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: baseball card market. I think the other thing that is
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: intriguing here is that it's a It makes it good
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: for people who are maybe just breaking into collecting. It's
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: a pretty simple checklist that like we've ran into this
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: when we talked about Allen and Ginter the other week,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: where you know, it's a pretty short rainbow if you're
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: doing for the rainbow parallels, and on top of it,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: you know, Alan Ginter is maybe a little crazier on
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: all the inserts and different types of relics and autos.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: It doesn't get more straightforward, I think than actually Top
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Top Heritage. It's a pretty limited insert set. It's a
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: pretty limited range of like relics and autos, and you
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: know pretty quickly I think what you've got when you've
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: got it, and so it's not something where you've got
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: a there are a few you know, short print parallels
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: where you've got to keep an eye on like if
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: it's a flip stock or not, but otherwise you can
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: and feel pretty good that you know you can figure
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: out the set pretty quickly and then be able to
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: get into more complicated sets from there. So I alluded
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: to the parallels hopefully you were prepping. I mean, we
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: don't have the big old like fifty three parallels that
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: we went over from Top's chrumb update last week, where
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: I think you're still recovering from that. But let the
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: people out there know if they're chasing the rainbow for
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Heritagehige number, if they're trying to put together for that
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Nick Kurtz Rookie card, what do they have to put? All?
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: So let's start first with our fun base parallels, because
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: we do have two kinds of different sets here. We
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: got the base perils and we got the chrome versions.
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: So from a base peril perspective, we have five five
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: total base parallels. We have the dark blue border. These
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: are hobby boxes. You get plenty of them in there.
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: Print runs probably around twenty eight hundred twenty nine hundred
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: somewhere in there, not numbered. Then you have your bisentennials
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: the leath.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: These are supposed to be numbered.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: They're in the hobby box. Print run about two hundred.
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: Then you have color of the year cards that are
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: going to be in there. They're out of seventy six.
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: Kind of think of it as your Independence Day kind
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: of from your flagship products. Black bordered those are out
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: of fifty. Black borders are typically not numbered. I haven't
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: looked at the set yet, ye aren't. Historically they are
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: not numbered, so this is kind of a sneaky one
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: that catches people by surprise. And then flip stock there
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: are five These are generally out of five. Flip stock
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: is where they actually use the different The card stock
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: on the front of the back is flipped and so
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: it feels a little funny as far as what you
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: are running into. So that's what you have for kind
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: of just the base based checklist, and then if you
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: go to the chrome side of things, you have a
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: little bit more. We have light blue Sparkle which are
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: non numbered. They're one and seven the hobby box, very
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: kind of much like.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Dark blue border bass parallels.
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: You have refractors about six hundred and seventy five print
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: run on those.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: Then you get into your numbers.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: You have blue borders out of one to fifty, green
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: borders out of ninety nine, black borders out of seventy five,
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: gold borders out of fifty, orange out of twenty five,
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: your reds out of five as usual, then your super fractors,
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: and it's that simple there. Hobby boxes only that's how
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: you get heritage, and there's one version at each level
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: of rarity, which I actually just love to see that
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: going back, same things apply for your high numbered as
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: they do for your base carge, m chrome and paper
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: parallel perspective, so I was actually even able to give detail.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: I kept my breath. This was fantastic. This was so
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: much easier that has been the past.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, we need the brakes when we can get it.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: And so the other thing to keep in mind is,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: I think if you're going from the full rainbow, you
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: probably also want to tack in on the variations. So
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: what they do with tops heritage is not only do
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: they have like the you know, the flip stock, which
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: I would kind of say is a little bit like
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: this where it's a variation on the normal design, but
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: you've also got you know, the little characters on the front,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: like the cartoons in the nineteen seventy six design, go
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: to rasball dot com to see what we're talking about.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: Will be much easier to see when you look at
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: actually the design and look at the cards. I've always
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: got pictures of the cards when we're discussing a checklist
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: with a post on rasball that goes with the rest
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: of the pod. It's also going to be in your
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: show notes if you want a direct link and you
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: don't want to go through the hassle of typing in
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: rasball dot com and finding the post there. But you'll
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: be able to see that. Like the nineteen seventy six
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: design in the lower half of the card, it's got
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: like a little cartoon player on it. There'll be a
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: variation of that. You've got variations on the back in
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: terms of the bats, you've got picture variations, image variations
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: usually like nineteen seventy six is a little different because
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: usually most heritage cards when they go back to seventies,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: the photos they used to use back in the day
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: were just kind of like spring training shots or head shots,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: so you would get image variations where it's an action variation.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: It's a little different with nineteen seventy six because back
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: in or with the nineteen seventy six design, because back
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: when they put those cards together, they actually put together
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: more action shots with that set than they usually did
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: with base Tops. So there's not exactly an action image variation,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: but there are image variations, and then you've also got
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: nickname variations and throwback uniform variations. The nice thing here
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: is if you go to the checklist anywhere for like
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: Beckett or Chasing Majors or Tops, it's a limited checklist
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: for those. So you know, I was just talking about
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: this being a simple set, and they just went into
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: all these variations, but it's a limited number of variations.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: You don't have to check every single card for one
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: of these cartoon image variations. You've got the limited list
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: of thirty cards where you know these players could have
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: that cartoon variation, and then you can hone in on
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: those from there. So, like I said, go to rasball
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: dot com see some of these variations. I'll have examples
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: of them so they can look a little bit at
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: what we're talking about. But what do you think about
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: these very because I think that is one of the
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: more fun things about Tops heritage and heritage China number.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: What about you. Yeah, I love it. I think it's
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: it's fun.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: It's kind of like a sneaky little insert thing now.
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: I mean it used to be back in the day
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: they'd have these in there. They would be front facing
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: in the packs without any detail that they were variations,
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: and so it was hard to find them, like it
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: would like you'd have to be searching serial numbers to
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: see if I actually got something like that. They've gone
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: soft on us a little bit. They turn them around
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: backwards of the pack, not all of them, Like I
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: don't think the alternate cartoon actually says anything on the back,
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: but like the image variation has a little word image
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: on the back, so you can find them a little
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: bit easier.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: Than they want to.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: But I think it's a fun little aspect of this,
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: which is like it's not a parallel, but it's a variation,
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: and it's for the card hunter in me. I love
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: that aspect of Like I've been at Carter shows. I'm
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: digging through them, like I got this heritage, and I
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: just I see something. It just feels different. I can't
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: explain it, and you're like, what is it about this?
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: And you're trying to check the serial number, trying to
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: check if it's a very and usually it's not. Usually
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: you're just wrong, you haven't seen that card. But I
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: do think it just gives a little bit something else
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: to it. And again they're like rare, but they're not
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: terribly rare, but because of the variation, like they're treated
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: probably more sought after the number of the numbered parallels,
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: just because people do like to kind of do the
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: rainbow of the player in heritage, not just the the
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: numbered parallels, but they like to include the image variations
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: or the flip bad or the nicknames, all those kind
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: of things within their rainbow. So I think it's fun
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: and I think it's a kind of quirky way that
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: they add value to the product.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. And it also like it harkens
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: back to back in the day of like the seventies
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: and eighties and nineties a little bit where there will
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: be misprints and so these variations especially feel a little
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: bit in the zone of like the misprints, like the
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: no name Frank Thomas is and stuff like that, where
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: it gives you that so sort of feeling. So I
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: think it's fun from that aspect. Okay, let's get into
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: some of the hits that come out of these boxes.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: So first let's start on the autos and relic cards.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Where this is if you're buying one of those hobby boxes,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: you're gonna get one of these, either an auto or
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: a relic, most likely a relic and so and so.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Because the autos, I will say this is one of
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: the more popular portions of heritage and heritage high number
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: is the autos because they are all on card, real
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: autos that you don't run into sticker autos within the
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: heritage sets. And I think it's also really popular that
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: people put together, like the the whole Bass Auto checklist,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: a lot of the real ones, and people really work
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: hard on that because it looks beautiful when you get
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: all of them together. The base ones will be in
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: a blue everyone's chasing the red ink ones, which are
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: more limited and numbered and usually hand numbered on the front.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: I think some of the pictures we've got from the
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: PR materials they don't have that hand numbering, so we'll
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: see what surfaces. But I think that's what makes it cool.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: It's always like the same person at tops writing the
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: hand numbering on them. When they are hand numbered from Heritage.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: But this is where it stands out, Like the real
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: Ones autograph list here for Heritage high number is loaded
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: with stars, it's loaded with rookies, is loaded with Hall
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: of Famers throwback players. So I mean it's certainly much
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: better than what we're talking about with tops chrome update.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Last week they've also introduced real one autographs of black
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: and white cards, which is all they're not quite all
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: Hall of Famers, but they're all stars of the seventies.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: You've also got wax pack autographs and then autograph relics
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: flashback autographs, and you really get into just like the
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: inserts all have their individual autograph parallels, and then the
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: other spot where Heritage signed is. I mean, these are
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: extremely rare, but they are the product hit are the
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: cut signatures, where I will say that this list of
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: cut signatures, if you're not familiar with them, to cut
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: signatures are usually you know, I think they're pretty much
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: always from people who have been deceased because you can't
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: get a new auto from them, so you know, they
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: find a piece of memorabilia or sometimes we've talked about
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: like it's usually a check if it's a baseball player,
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: which is kind of funny, cut it out, put it
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: in a card. I would say this is one of
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: the weaker sets that I've seen in a while where
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: you've got four baseball players four celebrities. The baseball players
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: are Catfish Hunter, Gary Carter, Lou Brock, Thurman Munson, so
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: pretty solid from the baseball side. On the celebrity side,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: it's Gerald Ford, Gordie how Marlon Brando, Margaret Thatcher. So
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: it's not exactly the greatest list. Usually you're getting a better,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: more popular and famous president than Gerald Ford, and certainly
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: someone more popular than Margaret Thatcher. So what do you
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: think about these autos? Anything stand out compared to you
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: what you've seen before in heritage or do you just
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: also have more praises to sing for these Real One autos?
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: I mean I think it comes back to the Real
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: One autos, like is it's like the catch in this
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: in the set is the red Real One autos you're
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: looking for? I did check well while you were talking there,
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: and they are hand numbered this year for high high number.
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: There is a Nick Kertz out there on eBay. If
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: you're interested in only twelve thousand dollars, I can get
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: yeah to take a swing for when you get a chance.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: But yeah, Karna breakdown in five month on that.
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: You know, yeah, you don't know.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: Interest rates are high.
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: But I think that this is hard.
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: They're hard pulls, right, You're you're talking like one in
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: you know, five hundred packs type of thing h for
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: you know, just a red ink Auto one one hundred
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: and twenty four for just a real one auto for
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: And so they are harder to find. But I do
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: feel like the autos, they do a really good job
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: in this set of for the most part, make them
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: guys that you want. There's a few here and there,
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: but the names are pretty dusch staring solid in the
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: in the set. Whether it's the all famers, whether it's
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: the you know, the through the Year's relics, whether it's
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: just the base real one autos, they all are pretty
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: much a true hit. When you hit those autos, it's
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: not like your Chrome update where you're you know, cycling
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: through middle relievers that that type of thing. You know, again,
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: you might hit markets thatcher and here you are, but
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: it's it's it is a pretty solid checklist. So that's
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: what you're chasing. You're chasing the real one autos. The
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: Cut autos are good. I do think I do actually
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: like the Baseball checklist for the Cut autos this year.
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: It's just like from a pure like eclectic group. You
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: can't get much more colllectic than a Hunter versus Gary
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: car versus Lou Brock ver so the Thurman months, and
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: like that's four different sides of some spectrum of those guys.
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: Like there isn't like the biggest name, Like you know,
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: I would probably argue the Brocks probably the biggest chase there,
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: but you know, you don't have like a absolute legend
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: that's that's in there that everybody's chasing. But still, if
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: you pull one of those, you're gonna be absolutely thrilled,
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: so loving, loving what we're seeing from the auto side
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: of herriage.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and I might be mistaken. It's not like I'm
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: watching this market all the time, but I'm pretty confident
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: that the Munthson Cut auto is pretty rare that I
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: don't think you see a lot of months in autos,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: So that'll be a pretty nice chase there. And so
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: whoever pulls that, that's going to be a big poll.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Let's get into some of the relics because I think
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: even though like we do poo poo the relics, and
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: we kind of make them down trodden, especially because you
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: know they do say game use memorabilia on them, but
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: like who used it is very unknown because what we're
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: looking at here are you're kind of classic like napkin
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: patch autos, your sliver or relics, your napkin patch relics,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: your sliver a bat where unknown kind of where it's
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: coming from. But at the end of the day, it's
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: a cool card because the Clubhouse collection from Heritage always
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: looks great in like the designs from the seventies and
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: sixties that they're using. They pop with a lot of
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: color and they have a good thickness like you've talked about,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: where it doesn't feel like some of the stuff you're
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: getting out of Flagship where you're just like, wow, this
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: is a flimsy card with just like a piece of
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: a retail jersey in it. It feels a little more legit.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: So I've always appreciated that about just the base relics
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: that come out of Heritage is that they've got you know,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: a little more value, it feels like to them. And
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: then you get into some of the cool stuff where
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: this is where I think they're really leaning into some
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: of the Bisonentennial stuff. They've got an entire separate ten
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: card checklist of Bisentennial relics of famous nineteen seventies players.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: And then the Clubhouse Collection has dual relics, triple relics,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: quad relics that are all for I believe they're all
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: for like team themed and they usually include somebody that
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: was big in the seventies and then a modern day
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: player or two. So lots of great kind of hits
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: there for team collectors. Are you in the same vein
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: as me with the Clubhouse Collection relics that you like
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: them or have you felt about them over the years.
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: Yeah, honestly they are one of my favorite relics sets
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: over the years. They've they always have these really classic
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: clean designs. You can always one of the things about
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: heritage and it just goes back to the old tops designs,
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: like from a puer like centering perspective, you always can
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: tell like a really well put together card. It's got
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: these great borders and clean lines. And again when we
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: talk about hand numbering, the relics are hand numbered, at
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: least the gold are are hand numbered, so that's I
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: believe they're out of ninety nine at least. Check this
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: I'm looking at says one fifteen print run. But I'm
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: pretty sure if I look at a one posted on
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: eBay right now, it's out of ninety nine at least
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: that's where they hand. Maybe there's a few extras in
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: the in the in the BA back somewhere there a
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: top sixteen. Yeah, here's card number one oh five ninety nine.
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: So I think they do a really good job.
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: With them, and they're just they're clean, good looking cards.
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: They to your point, they are game used. Yeah, let's
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: I get into the questions about that. And they do
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: a really good job for the most part with the
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: rare relics, with the the duels, the triples, and in
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: the quad relics, they're generally like if you're pulling one
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: of those, there's not a like, man, this guy feels
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: out of place.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: Things like that.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: And I even look into the list right now, there's
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: just not one that jumps out to me and be like, man,
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: somebody's really bringing bringing this this one down. If I'm
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: gonna have to pick on, somebody's probably be Lawrence Butler.
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: That's the one that I would expect to where like,
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: I'm sorry, uh, you know Billy Williams's you had to
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: hang out with with Lawrence Butler and Jacob Wilson. That's
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: the one that felt a little funny. But overall these
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: are all solid. There's they're solid. So even the hits here,
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: when you're getting that relic, I'm happy. I'm happy when
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: I hit the relics. So again, sum it all up
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: Heritage High Number, Like, I feel like I need to
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: go buy a box now there's a lot of hits
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: in it. The actual hit, you know, the case hit
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: that you're going to get or the box that you're
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: gonna get is going to be either an auto or
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: a nice relic. So yeah, these are fun to open
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: and hold some value and there's gonna be some sneaky
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: cards in here that people are gonna want.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean, I mean the we can almost
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: forget about these inserts because I will say that this
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: is probably where if there was anything where I had
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: to improve Heritage and Heritage Hig Number, it's the inserts.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: The inserts have always been kind of bland and boring.
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: Where I think that's where tops, Chrome and Flagship are
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: really starting to get really good, and you know, they're
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: starting to take us back to some of the nineties
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: inserts that were really fun, and especially when you look
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: at like, you know, how popular like all aces and
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: some of the other stuff has become, and how value
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: Bullet's actually become when it's pretty high printed. Heritage really
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: does fall down when it comes to the inserts. So
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: they've got some of like the standard ones, I would say,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: where they either have them just about annually or repeat
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: them a lot between rookie performers, Perfect ten and award winners,
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: but pretty bland designs I think across the board, and
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: nothing really stands out in terms of like a cool
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: must own award winner card because like you know, you
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: find those across all sorts of products. The newer kind
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: of unique ones here is that we have the Bisentennial Stars,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: which you know had the relics in there, but again
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: it's much cooler with the relic design, where the insert
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: design is a little more forgotten and bland without the
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: relic included into it. They have this strange checklist where
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: it's a little more short printed. I believe now it's
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: still actually the same as the others, where it's the
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: nineteen seventy six Retirees checklist, where after the nineteen seventy
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: six season, both or all three of Hank Aaron, Billy, Williams,
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: Antoni Oliva, all three Hall of Famers retired, So they've
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: got a little bit of a fifteen card set to
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: honor those guys. But I mean, when you're smashing three
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: guys into a fifteen card set usually not the most
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: exciting stuff. And then you've also got an undefeated checklist
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: which it's all Reds players, and that one is more
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: short printed, but it's it's a bunch of Reds cards.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: So what do you think about these inserts? I think
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: this is maybe one spot where they should engage with
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: us and contract us over at tops because I've got
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: tons of heritage insert ideas.
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I got tons of ideas here, and like you
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: look at some of the standard ones, like Rookie Performer
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: has always been a good one, things like that, But
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: the new ones they put in this year, like as
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: you look at them, and like you like, if you're
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: to look these up and look at the designs, please
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: start with Bison Sennial Stars, go to nineteen seventy six retireties,
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: and then go to Undefeated. That's the order I went in,
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: and like, I just got more depressed as I went
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: through because the Bisentennial Stars felt to me like the
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: MLB Stars inserts in Flagship, where like you just like
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: got so many of them, Like is this even an insert?
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: Like I'm just getting them left and right for every
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: single player, Like they have the same look and feel.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: Of that card.
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: The nineteen seventy six retirees reminded me of Kmart sets
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: from back in the day that like or the Kellogg
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: sets or things like that is what that reminded me of.
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: And then the Undefeated those are terrible cards, Like I
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: don't know how to explain. It definitely harkens to like
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: an early nineties like tops design of we try to
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: do an insert and they just literally it's a boring
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: border and it says Undefeated, and like I want to say,
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: word art from PowerPoint is kind of what they did here,
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: Like I think my four year old designed. This is
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: really what it comes down to. So like those are
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: pretty pretty rough cards, and I get it. We want
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: to celebrate the reds and yeah, maybe you should have
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: done it with the cards actually people want.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: Yeah, well, and it's also tough to like because they
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: didn't put Pete Oh no, Pete Rose is in the
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: checklist never mind. But like you're looking at that nineteen
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: seventy six Reds team that swept the Yankees, and yeah,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: you have to just conjure Pete Rose and what he
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: all means to the baseball and put it into that set.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: It makes it a little tough. But I will say
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: with those insert sets, because they're a little bit less
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: boring or a little less exciting, very boring, they're easy
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: to get your hands on, and that makes this Heritage
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: High number a really great set where if you want
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: to practice like putting together a master set, it's a
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: good one to start with because you can put together
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: the bass checklist, the short prints, the inserts pretty easily.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: You could even tack on a run of the base
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: clubhouse collections, I think pretty easy, and you could probably
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: if you want to get into it, some of the
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: real one autos. So I think there's lots of collectors
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: that actually go through that whole Master and put it
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: together all those base the inserts, the the autos, and
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: the clubhouse collection. So that's why it is such a
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: popular set out there in baseball car collecting world at large.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: So I think with that we've done a great job
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: of kind of getting through all the bits and bobs
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: of heritage high numbers. So we're gonna wrap it up
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: for this week.
