2:38
Dave, thanks for having me, Thank you for being here. Now.
2:39
You're a current member of the board, as I said, and you hope
2:43
to be re elected to that position. But before we get there, let's
2:46
talk about let's talk about you. Give us the bio on Christian Wells.
2:51
Okay, I was born and raised in Putnam County. I've listed here pretty
2:53
much on my life. I'm a general contractor. My wife is a teacher.
2:58
I have two kids. They both go to Winfield. My wife and
3:01
I both graduated from Winfield. My daughter is a sophomore Winfield High School and
3:06
my son's a sixth grader at Winfield Middle School. We are heavily involved in
3:10
church, in sports, and don't know what to do most evenings because we're
3:15
so busy. So a lot of parents would echo that. Talk about your
3:19
time on the board, talk about what the experience has been like. Well,
3:23
it's been a good experience, I think, I mean, I hope
3:24
it's been a great experience for the teachers and students of Putnam County. During
3:29
my time on the board, I've been part of the voting to make Putnam
3:31
County teachers the highest paded teachers in the state. We've also voted to extend
3:36
healthcare into retirement for our teachers. I recently received the Teachers Union, the
3:42
AFT Putnam Teachers Union endorsement, And if everybody remember, back during COVID,
3:47
we were the first county to get our kids back to school. So I
3:52
felt like I feel like my time on the board has been fruitful. Really
3:57
love to get the opportunity to get back on there again four years. You
4:00
know, Christian Putnham County is known for some of the best schools in the
4:03
state period, and I mean seriously. As you know, people actually moved
4:08
to Putnham County in many cases just so their kids can go to the schools
4:12
in Puttnham County. We're seeing it already with New Core. You're on the
4:15
ground there. What makes Puttinham County schools so good and so appealing to parents?
4:19
Well, I believe we've done a good job over the years of getting
4:24
the best teachers. You know, greatness are iron sharpens iron. You get
4:29
great teachers in here, everything gets better. Everything gets better. And as
4:33
you know, all ships rise with the rising tide. But as we continue
4:39
to get better teachers in here, more and more good teachers want to get
4:41
in here. And people see that, they recognize that as a great education
4:45
here in Putnam County, so they want to send their kids here. You
4:48
know, one of my son's best friends is a New Core kid moved in
4:51
here from Indiana. Now his dad drives all the way from from Rocky Step
4:57
here in Putnam County, all the way out to Mason County for job.
5:00
They could have gone to Mason County schools, but they chose Bututton County for
5:02
a reason. That's because we have the best school system. Baby, I'm
5:05
one on five. Baby line is brought to part by Hustin's Pizza this month
5:09
that your favorite Huston's get a large Aten nach Pepperoni pizza and an order of
5:12

5:16
I mentioned this ye yesterday with someone who's running for election for the board in
5:19
Kanawa County. It's not easy being a board member now, I mean,
5:24
you had COVID to deal with. You mentioned that earlier then charter schools,
5:28
more parents choosing either charter, homeschooling, or anything other in some cases than
5:31
traditional public schools, high school transfer role. It's a lot to navigate as
5:36
a school board member. Now, yeah, it really is. I mean
5:40
I've joked about that that my time on the board has been the most tumultuous
5:45
time ever. I mean last time in campaigning this year has been much different
5:49
than it us four years ago because I was campaigning right in the middle of
5:53
COVID, so you really couldn't give speeches. You couldn't visit people, You
5:56
couldn't go to or to door, none of the things that are traditionally done
6:00
during a campaign. We're able to be done four years ago. I've been
6:03
able to do that this year. But yeah, well we have we have
6:05
tons of challenges. Uh, not only that we've already faced, and I
6:10
think we've done a pretty good job of facing them. But we've got a
6:13
lot coming. You know, the craziness and the uh, the ideology of
6:17
the left that keeps slapping us in the face. It's gonna it's gonna hit
6:21
us here in Putnam County. It's going to hit our entire state. I
6:24
think it already has, as you've seen in some places. So we have
6:28
to keep good conservative folks on the board and uh and keep fighting the good
6:31
fight. What do you hear from parents or grandparents when you're out on the
6:38
campaign trail, Christian, what are they telling you? Well, you know,
6:42
it's weird, it's mixed. You're always going to get some some complaints
6:46
and some some issues, but mostly it's been positive. It's been keep up
6:50
the good work. It's it's it's been pass on the back, and I
6:55
greatly appreciate that. I mean It is a it's a tough and relatively thankless
6:59
job. But you know, I've I've I'm invested in this county. I've
7:02
got two kids, I've got a stake in this game, and I've got
7:05
two kids that I got to watch out for along with everybody else's kids.
7:10
You know, we we've got to provide the best possible outcome for our students
7:14
and our teachers. So but but most of the feedback has been positive.
7:18
I'm really appreciative of that. You mentioned that your wife is a teacher.
7:23
What kind of insight does that give you in being married to an educator?
7:30
Because I mean, I know, when you come home with the end of
7:31
the day, maybe the last thing you want to speak about is education.
7:35
But but what kind of insight do you get from your wife. Well,
7:41
she's a preschool teacher Winfield Baptist, and she could teach in elementary schools,
7:47
but she's she's chosen to stay. She started there and she's chosen to stay
7:50
there. It's tough, man, I tell you, I just I have
7:55
an appreciation for what teachers do after talking to her every day about the challenges
8:01
she faces, and it's everything from parents to students to you have it,
8:05
but whatever that is. But she genuinely loves it. She loves the kids.
8:11
She would miss anything that, you know, if she ever left the
8:16
teaching profession, she'd miss terribly what she gets from those students. There's so
8:18
much reward in it. So the inside I get is how rewarding it can
8:24
be, but how tough it really is. And to support our teachers right
8:28
and teaching, whether it's on the public school level or a private school or
8:33
whatever. I mean, teachers are asked to do so much more Christian than
8:37
what they were when I was in school. I mean, they're now in
8:41
addition to you know a's and b's and x's and o's whatever, they're also
8:46
social workers, they're also dietitians. There are also so many other things because
8:52
of society now, the way society is absolutely and then also back in our
8:56
day when we were in school, there was no social media. So now
9:01
I see parents going online all the time and complaining and criticizing these teachers,
9:05
and that's awful to see in my opinion. You know, whether it's deserved
9:11
or not, these teachers deserve our support and they're not ever going to make
9:16
every right decision every time but we have to support them. We have to
9:20
do whatever we can to try to help these folks because it is such a
9:22
thankless job at times. We're talking with Christian Wells again Canada for reelection to
9:26
the Putnham County Board of Education. Do you have a website or social media
9:30
or anything like that you'd like to plug? I don't currently, No,
9:33
I've never set that up. I'm on Facebook, though. I put everything
9:37
out there on Facebook that I can and hopefully everybody will like and share it.
9:41
All right, this is the final thirty, as I call it,
9:43
Christian. Why should someone vote to re elect Christian Wells to the Putnam County
9:46
Board of Education. Well, if you are a true conservative, you want
9:52
to keep conservative values on the school board, I'm the only choice in my
9:58
district. I would also recommend you cat Field. But if you want true
10:01
conservative voices, those are your guys. All right, appreciate your vote well,
10:05

16:33
layer of the court system in the state and it's the newest position on the
16:36
ballot. Ryan White wants to join the Courty joints us Now, Ryan,
16:40
good morning, Welcome to the show. Morning Dave, thank you. First
16:44
explaining the Intermediate Court of Appeals. How does it work, who uses it,
16:47
etc. Well, the Intermediate Court is a new court that was created
16:49
about three years ago by the West Virginia Legislature and it's been in operation for
16:55
about two years. It takes civil appeals, it takes family law, all
17:00
workers comp and administrative appeals. So the last three I mentioned are come directly
17:07
from those specific courts. It doesn't go to the circuit court anymore more so
17:11
it has it's added appeal for people that didn't want to take it to the
17:17
Supreme Court and basically lessen the load on the circuit court so that they can
17:22
run more efficiently. It was and I don't I hate to use the term
17:26
controversial because that means that it that almost rings to the fact that you know,
17:30
some people didn't wanter whatever. But I will say that there was a
17:33
lot of discussion that went into it when this was created, correct. I
17:37
think this is certain people didn't think it was a wise use of tax payer
17:42
money to do. But the fact of the matter is we're the we were
17:45
the largest state. They didn't have an intermediate court of appeals. So in
17:48
my opinion, it's it's not a bad thing to have. Why do you
17:52
want to be a part of it? Well, I want to be a
17:55
part of the intermyt Court of Appeals because West Virginia needs a fair, un
17:59
biased, balanced judge that will follow the rule of law and protect people's constitutional
18:03
rights. And I believe I'm the candidate that can do that. I have
18:07
the experience through my Well let me start, I was yeah, that's gonna
18:12
be The next question is your bio. So yeah, so I was.
18:17
I went to law school at w College of Law in two thousand and five.
18:21
I'm a native West Virginian and i was a clerk for Judge Goodwin back
18:27
in two thousand and five to two thousand and six down here, and then
18:32
I was a lawyer for Jackson Kelly for six years. In that time,
18:37
I worked for the legislature, the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Economic Development
18:41
Committee for three sessions. And then I started a law firm with my dad
18:48
back in twenty twelve. Since I've been working at that law firm, White
18:53
Law Office has since then. In twenty fourteen, I ran for a school
19:00
board and was elected school board and I ran for reelection two times since then,
19:07
and I had to resign in order to run for this. I was
19:10
president of the school board. I was elected president of the school board by
19:14
my peers. I was also on the school Board Association West Virginia and was
19:18
elected the president of that as well. I've served on many nonprofit boards throughout
19:23
West Virginia and the state, and my law practice is primarily building West Virginia
19:30
up and making sure West Virginia has the best success it can with infrastructure building
19:33
bringing jobs to West Virginia, and I've practiced all throughout the state doing that.
19:37
What were some of the things maybe that I always like to ask this
19:41
of any political candidate that's held one office and is aspiring to get to another
19:45
one. Were there things that you learned in your time serving on the school
19:51
board that you think will serve you well an intermediate Court of Appeals? Oh?
19:55
Definitely. I mean in the school board, especially the last ten years,
20:00
there's been some difficult decisions that need to be made and I I was
20:03
part of that, and I had to make some tough decisions. I mean,
20:07
I didn't make everybody happy, but you're not going to make everybody happy.
20:11
So I think I showed that I was very uh even keeled, and
20:15
listened to people and UH and could take uh and and was not someone even
20:21
tempered and did not uh did not try to impose my will on anybody.
20:26
So that's something I learned. Also, UH, the court is UH is
20:32
a governmental entity. People forget about that. They think that you only make
20:34
decisions, but it's also a governmental entity that has a budget. And there's
20:37
also administrative stuff. So my uh, my experience on the school board will
20:42
also help with running the actual court and making sure that we we are within
20:47
budget and that the employees are are are are going well. It's a well
20:52
hopefully that it will be a well rowned machine. But Dave Allen Shilling five,

21:14
Dot net because what you don't know can't hurt you. What is the average
21:18
day like for somebody that's on the Intermediate Court of Appeals. Well, from
21:22
my discussion with the judges, the average day is you're you're reading a lot
21:26
of briefs from the attorneys and you're you're making sure that you're working with your
21:33
staff to ensure that you you make decisions. Now, they do have oral
21:38
arguments, but those are once or twice a month. Only about ten percent
21:42
of those cases go for O and so for oral argument, you're actually have
21:48
the two attorneys argue. It's about it's about five minutes each and you listen
21:53
to them and then you're you're also compiled with the other judges as well,
22:00
talking with them and making sure that they have you guys are focusing on the
22:06
right issues when you're talking about the cases. How's the campaign been so far?
22:11
I mean, anytime that you're going for anything of a judicial type,
22:14
you know, whether it's what you're doing or whatever, it's a little bit
22:17
different, you know than run for house or running for sheriff or mayor or
22:19
whatever house. The campaign been. Campaign has been great. I've been all
22:22
throughout West Virginia and people I talk to because this is this encompasses the entire
22:29
state. You know, this is not divided like into districts or anything like
22:32
that. You're you know, you're serving make Wand as well as Martinsburg.
22:36
Correct. Yeah, Yeah, it's it's a statewide election. It's the first
22:40
election for the Interviewing Court, and a lot of a lot of me going
22:42
around talking to people is explaining exactly what the enemy of quarter like you're doing
22:47
today because most people don't even know what it is. So yeah, I'm
22:52
going throughout the state. I've been to Martinsburg, UH, Morgantown, Clarksburg,
22:56
Wheeling, we areting uh just talking to people and making sure they know
23:02
backway and making sure they know what it is and how it is important to
23:06
everyone's life right now, and just provide awareness of my candidacy. And people
23:11
have been very supportive and like, what I like to say if you are
23:15
elected to the disposition? What what do you hope to do in the position?
23:22
What would you like to see the hobage? I mean, it's relatively
23:23
new. It's not like you're dealing with the Supreme Court, where you know
23:27
you have decades and decades of history. So what would you like to do
23:30
with a complet if you if you win? Well, if I'm elected,
23:33
I'm the first thing I'm going to do. I won't take office until January
23:36
one, So the first thing I'm going to do is, well, I'm
23:38
going to continue to work out my law practice and continue to wrap up my
23:41
law practice. I'm going to go and start talking to people and to certain
23:48
entities throughout the state and make sure that I'm aware of what they need on
23:55
the court, for example, workers' comp and and unemployment, and I can
24:00
go and talk to the people that do that type of stuff and make sure
24:03
that I get a better understanding of what they what they need with the court,
24:10
and same with family law. I'll be doing that in the meantime.
24:14
But what I want to accomplish is I want to make sure that the court
24:18
continues to be expedient and people get their cases hurt in an expedient manner.
24:22
I want to make sure that the cases that we set some good precedent.
24:27
That's one thing that's advantageous for an intermedi at Court of Appeals is that you
24:30
have good precedent that lawyers can use and provide more certainty. So I want
24:36
to make sure that that that precedent is solid, rock solid, and within
24:41
the bounds of our law and constitution too. You have a website or social

Chris, good morning. Where are you this morning? Morning? Dave.
30:29
I'm in Huntington now, but on my way to Bridgeport, Clarksburg and
30:32
Morgantown for the rest of the afternoon. So moving a million miles an hour
30:36
and having a blast. One week from today is when we'll know who will
30:41
move on. How are you feeling about it? You know what, I've
30:45
spent fifteen sixteen months traveling around the state get to know people, and it's
30:49
been an absolute spectacular experience. One of the things that I've learned is is
30:53
that people that are dying for a conservative Christian business guy to run things.
30:57
And that's exactactly what I am. I mean, I'm a business owner,
31:02
I'm a boxer, I'm a bison farmer and build twenty six businesses, have
31:06
seven hundred employees. And Dave, if I ran my businesses the way the
31:08
government spends our tax dollars, I'd be broke. And the most appealing thing
31:12
to voters when I talk to him is that I go about this with a
31:15
plan, and it's really really simple. On day one, we're going to
31:18
audit every single dime. On day two, we're going to make sure and
31:22
implement drug testing for welfare benefits because your tax dollars should never go to make
31:27
drug dealers rich. And it also allows us to identify problems people to need
31:32
help, get them the help that they need, and also direct resources to
31:34
the kids, because that really is what this is all about. And day
31:38
three, we're going to get all the lawmakers in the room without special interest
31:41
and without lobbyists, and we're going to get rid of the income tax.
31:45
And then that's when West Virginia is going to take off. Because we're surrounded
31:49
by five states Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and that
31:56
doesn't include DC which is nearest too, and all of them are high tax
32:00
and all of them have an income tax. We get rid of the income
32:02
tax, we are going to take off because that gives us a competitive advantage.
32:07
You talked about that, and again we're talking with Chris Miller, Republican
32:10
candidate for governor. You've talked about the elimination of the income tax, and
32:15
you say that on day three that you're going to get everybody together to work
32:19
on that. I mean, can can that be done on? I mean,
32:22
does I mean, is it that simple? If it's that simple,
32:24
why hasn't it already been done? You know. So that's the reason why
32:29
I say, day one, we're going to audit every dime because there's a
32:31
lot of waste inside of government. You know, We're going to make sure
32:35
and find all the three hundred dollars hammers and every piece of equipment that's disappeared
32:37
out of the back door to the Department of Highways, and then we're going
32:40
to make sure that we have a system that manages the people's tax dollars in
32:45
a much more efficient way, debuting me, your taxpayers. Everybody out there
32:49
listening is taxpayers, and the government wastes our money, and that's one of
32:52
the definite things we got to stop. So you find all the waste and
32:55
you get rid of the income tax. Wham, you can just take off.

33:17

33:22
fresh air. Let's talk about the drug testing of welfare recipients. That's something
33:25
that I don't think if you did a poll, I think the majority of
33:30
people would say, Okay, I'm fine with that. But across the country,
33:36
the courts have had a tendency to say a little bit different about that.
33:38
How will you tackle that? Because it will it will go to court.
33:42
Well, you gotta have good attorneys and where you can control stuff,
33:44
in particular to the state level. And this is just one of the many
33:46
examples of all the waste of our tax dollars that people are tired of.
33:51
We don't want our tax dollars going like you and me are susceptible to drug
33:54
tests at anytime, All of our employees are susceptible to that. Anybody in
33:58
the Union has to pass drug to work. Why in the world will we
34:01
let people that aren't working, that we're paying to stay at home have to
34:05
go through something totally different we had a whole them accountable, just like everybody
34:07
else. And it doesn't ever ever benefit people to use drugs. And I
34:12
don't want my tax dollars days. I don't want my tax dollars to go
34:15
to make drug dealers rich. And I also don't want my tax dollars to
34:19
be soaked up by people that are using drugs as opposed to taking care of
34:22
their own kids. It is a principal thing and it's worth fighting for,
34:25
it seems Chris, the no one this election cycle likes the polls unless it
34:30
shows them in the lead. Where are you on the polls so far?
34:36
Well? So, elections are always about the people, and I think the
34:38
political class forgets that. And I'm a very, very very hard worker and
34:44
all I've done for the past sixteen months is work and work and work and
34:46
talk to as many people as many voters as I can, And that is
34:50
what elections are always about. At the end of the day, It's about
34:52
the voters, and the voters are going to speak, and we know that
34:55
voters are looking for a conservative, Christian business guy to run things. They
35:00
the fact that we're going about it with a plan. You already heard our
35:02
three day plan, and they also like they're dying for something different, because
35:07
Mandave, we are dead lasting everything from economy to education. The only thing
35:12
we're first placing in is the number of grandparents raising grandkids and also cancer rates.
35:16
We've got this good old boy system that's been running our state for far
35:21
too long, and people are dying to have a seat at the table.
35:23
And so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna make the outsiders the insiders,
35:28
and the insiders the outsiders, and make sure everybody's got a seat at the
35:30
table. And then we're gonna start running government like a business. We're going
35:35
to create an economy that thrives. Going to do everything I can to get
35:37
wokeism completely and utterly kicked out of our school systems because I've got an eleven
35:43
year old daughter and I don't want her share in a locker room with a
35:45
biological mail. And you start doing this stuff, you start speaking from the
35:50
heart and telling the truth. People are dying for that man, they really
35:53
are. And so I like where we're sitting. I like our chances,
35:57
and I have faith in the voters. It's been so chris of a nasty
36:00
campaign between the leading for yourself, Mac Warner, Patrick Morrison, more capital.
36:05
Apparently apparently no one's heard of Ronald Reagan's command, but that dal shall
36:08
not speak ill of other Republicans. Are you surprised about the level of nasty
36:12
that's been in this Republican primary? Oh yeah, absolutely. And there's about
36:16
fifteen million dollars an out of state attack money that's been placed on me from
36:22
a Club for Growth, all supporting Patrick Morrisey. And this is the perfect
36:25
example of what people are sick and tired of. We're tired of being being
36:30
like sold and we've been sold down the river in the opiate settlements, We've
36:34
been sold down the river when it comes to negotiating with outside businesses, and
36:37
now we're being sold down the river to outside special interest and this is the
36:43
big deal. We need to take these outsiders like business owners, farmers,
36:49
educators, laborers, everybody, and we need to take all the insiders,
36:55
the special interest, to the lobbying and that kind of stuff and make them
36:59
the outside and make sure that everybody's got a seat at the table. And
37:02
that's how that's how you run good government. Right there, Chris Bore,
37:07
we let you go when you were recording the famous TV commercials, and let's
37:10
face it, your TV commercials are a big part of why your dealerships have
37:14
been such a big success over the last few years. Did you ever think,
37:17
of the back of your mind, Okay, maybe at some point these
37:21
may come back to haunt me, or was it just, hey, this
37:24
is just some guys having fun trying to sell some cars. Did you ever
37:28
think it would be used against you? Well, it's one of the best
37:30
things about people in West Virginia is everybody's got a sense of Hubert. We
37:34
have some of the best people. I begin to wonder about that sometimes,
37:36
Yeah, go ahead, Well, we got a great sense of humor,
37:38
man, and people the voters in West Virginia know that. The people that
37:42
have seen those commercials for so long, they laugh, they get it,
37:45
they understand, and it's what we do. We strive to entertain, and
37:47
so I'm not worried about that in the slightest. Now, yeah, they
37:52
do try to twist it into something that it isn't, but hey, voters
37:54
are smart. They figure this stuff out, and we always have a good
37:58
time. I strive to entertain with the automotive commercials and what I'm doing with
38:01
the political stuff is. I want to make sure and send good messages that
38:04
come from my heart to the people in West Virginia so they know exactly where
38:07
I stand. Because people are dying for the truth and they're dying to know
38:10
what really is real. And at the end of the day, West Virginia
38:15
has an incredible opportunity in front of it. We just need to run government
38:17
more like a business. Start auditing every dime, treat tax payers like customers,
38:22
get rid of the income tax. And here's the icing on the cake.
38:27
Dave, being a business guy, I think assets, liabilities equity.
38:30
When you outline West Virginia's assets, all down, all the coal, all
38:35
the natural gas, the potential for rar earth elements were uncovered in the south.
38:38
We've got more potential to produce power through geothermal heat than Saudi Arabia can
38:44
generate, and BTUs and natural gas, and we have an incredible amount of
38:46
water. You get rid of the income tax, You leverage all these resources
38:52
to drive down the cost of power by seventy percent. You use that for
38:55
the foundation of all of our economic growth and development. We're going to take
38:59
all But then you think about Jim and Susie Adkins they're on Social Security and
39:04
they're seventy years old. You cut their power bill by seventy percent. You've
39:07
done something incredibly impactful for them too. And that, in my mind,
39:12
is what good government is. There's no reason why we're not the richis state
39:15
in the country. The only reason is is because we let politicians and attorneys
39:19
and bureaucrats run things as opposed to business guys. Look at what Trump was
39:22
able to do in DC create one of the greatest economies on the history of
39:27
planet Earth and we had no wars. Business guy and knows what he's doing.
39:30
You let me get in charge of running the government. I'll work at
39:34
a relentless rate. I'll run state government like a business and I'll do something
39:37
for our people because I'm sick and tired of sitting back and watching politicians fail
39:43
us over and over again. Every problem that we face is because of politicians.
39:47
Everything. Everything can be solved if you just start creating an economy that
39:52
thrives, get rid of the income tax, drive down the cost of power
39:57
by seventy percent, audit every single time that we spend. Run government like
40:00
a business, creating a comedy that thrives, and it solves the biggest problem
40:05
we face because right now our biggest export is not our color or natural gas.
40:09
Our biggest export is our kids. And that's the problem we have to
40:14
solve at the end of the day, all right, Chris will wish you

She joined us now in the par of mar Storre Studio. Good morning,
45:30
welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave Allen, thanks for having me.
45:34
Thank you. Do you prefer judge or your honor or? Lira or
45:37
Lira is fine? Judge Lira? How about Judge Lera? How about that?
45:42
Give us your bio, give us the background you key denkey So,
45:45
I was born and raised in Mingo County and a Mingo County girl from Williamson
45:49
Pierre. Wait a minute, hold it you pronounced it Williamson and not Wimson
45:52
Wimson. Okay, all right, I'm a looking gay. So make sure
45:54
you says all right? Got it? Go ahead, go ahead, go
45:57
ahead, of course, born down there, of course, been in Kenall
46:00
County now for quite a number of years, and I've practiced law here.
46:04
Of course, I went to Virginia Tech undergrad. Please don't hold that against
46:07
me. W Nation. Everybody's got to go somewhere exactly, went to WV
46:10
law school, practiced in Virginia for a little bit, came back to Charleston,
46:15
been practicing here ever since I married. My husband is Mark Kelly,
46:19
who's a lawyer here in Charleston. Ray Wynn and Kelly, and we have
46:22
four legged children rescue. We're real big into rescue animals. We have to
46:28
rescue labs and some cats and that's pretty I'm on the Humane Society's Board of
46:32
directors right now and involved in community and rescue when I can. And that's
46:37
a big, big passion of mine. So that's kind of the background,
46:42
and I can do more. Let's talk about your time on the court,
46:45
Okay, all right, So you know I've been on the court. You
46:46
know, we were elected in twenty sixteen. I took the bench the beginning
46:51
of twenty seventeen. I took Jude Schneider's place. He had retired and unfortunately
46:55
passed away before he got to enjoy any of his retirement. So I have
46:59
been on the bed ever since, Family court's tough, tough, you know,
47:02
for a lot of people who don't know what we do in family court.
47:05
It's all the divorces, it is all the child custody and all the
47:07
domestic violence petitions. They start in magic Core, but they end up in
47:10
ours. So it's tough day, but it's been It's a good experience.
47:15
I have a lot of experience being on the bench and dealing with these type
47:19
of cases, but overall it's a tough job. And I think about this
47:23
yesterday. Family Court judge is one of those positions that you don't need or
47:29
maybe even don't even think about. Correct until you do. Correct, until
47:32
it involves you or your family member or a close friend or something like that.
47:36
Correct, and everybody's touched by it. What's interesting is is the a
47:39
lot of the focus is on is on the big races, like the circuit
47:43
court, particularly because that's where a lot of the money cases are and people
47:45
that's in the public. A lot people don't think about family court, but
47:49
Dave Allen, it matters. It matters who's on that bench because we deal
47:53
with your children and your property, and sometimes it's not always in that order
47:58
of importance to people, but that's what we deal with. So those are
48:00
important issues. And I think the experience matters on the bench and having the
48:06
knowledge and the experience to be able to listen to the cases, hear what
48:09
people have to say, and make decisions within the law. And I would
48:14
think in family court there's one, two, three, four, five sides
48:19
to every possible story. Absolutely, And what people also don't realize is we
48:23
don't make the law. You know, the legislature makes the law, and
48:27
a lot of people don't like our decisions. And I get that nobody's happy
48:30
walking out of family court, Dave Allen, I mean, no, it
48:34
really isn't. So I think that they always say if everybody's mad, you're
48:37
doing your job. Well, it's not your goal to meet people mad,
48:39
but you know it is. It's tough decisions you have to make. But
48:43
the legislature makes the law on what we have to do. So if you
48:46
don't like what the law is, you got to go somewhere else and get
48:50
that change up with the legislature, not us. So we do the best
48:52
job we can. But again but you also have to remember our places arehesaus
48:57
are closed, so you can't walk in my courtroom. You can't anything about
49:00
my cases. I can't even defend myself to you about a case about something
49:05
that maybe somebody's mad at me and they're talking about me in public. I
49:07
can't even defend myself and say that's not what happened. And you have to
49:12
remember I can only make my decisions based on what you tell me and what
49:15
you bring in my court. And if you don't tell me and you don't
49:17
give me all the facts, then I don't know, and I can only
49:22
make my decision on what I hear in court. What is the biggest misconception
49:27
in the public about family court? Oh gosh, the biggest misconception, Oh,
49:30
you know what we hear a lot is well, Jane Doe, you
49:35
did this in Jane Doe's case. How come you didn't do it in my
49:37
case? What? Dave Allen? Every facts are different, So you think
49:40
everybody thinks that they should get the kind of the same outcome, if you
49:43
will, But the facts in every single case are different, and what they
49:46
don't tell you is all the backstory. So I think there's all that big
49:51
misconception of, well, everybody's going to you should get the same thing as
49:52
John as your neighbor got. Well, your neighbor's facts are different than your
49:57
facts and what evidence they bring the judge, so it's not the same.
50:00
Do I think that's a big misconception as well in your time on the court,
50:06
and maybe this predates you a little bit, but we can I know,
50:08
I'm sure you study the history of the courts. What's the caseload,
50:12
like I mean, compared to what it used to be, I would imagine
50:14
with all the problems we have in society, that it's doubled or tripled.
50:16
I could be wrong about that, Oh, Dave Allen, you couldn't be
50:20
more wrong, And I do know, so I'll give you for instance,
50:22
and I believe this has to be due to the decline in population half so
50:28
like for have been more so like I would say, like say, I'm
50:30
looking at a twenty fourteen fourteen d two thousand and something. We're barely hitting
50:37
a thousand new cases a year. That totally surprises me. And that's why
50:39
I learned things on this show every day, because I thought it would have
50:43
been more with the event of drugs and all these others. So it's it's
50:46
not no, not as far as new cases Now that doesn't mean people aren't
50:49
coming back in their old cases, okay, and so we have mods and
50:52
contempts. That's huge case load as well. But again, as far as
50:54
the number goes of new cases, it's it's half. And that means modification
51:01
modifications, like maybe you need to modify your child custody because remember anything with
51:05
kids can be modified until the child is eighteen and out of the out gone.
51:08
So you might want to modify your parenting plan. You might need to
51:10
modify child support, or maybe somebody's not doing what they're supposed to be doing
51:15
and you have to have a contempt. So we still have those ongoing all
51:17
the time. You mean, he, do you have an email or social
51:21
media? People can Facebook, it's reelect Judge van Meter. Judge Lira van
51:24
Meter is on the Facebook and I think there's a website attached to it as
51:28
well. All right, final thirty. Why should someone vote for Lira van
51:30
Meter for reelection to Family Court because Lira of van Meter has the experience.
51:35
I've been on the bench over seven years and Dave, I haven't always gotten
51:38
it right. I've grown as a judge over the last seven years. I've
51:42
changed and I think that comes with experience and knowledge, and I will continue
51:45
to always do the best job I can. I will always try my hardest
51:50
to get it right and do the best I can. But I am human.
51:52
But when I lay my head down at night, I'll promise you I
51:55
will have done the best job I can. All Right, I appreciate you
51:58
being here. Hang out with me just one second a week close the show.
52:00
